Things to do in Manta, Ecuador – The Complete Guide

Things to do in Manta – The Complete Guide

Manta is a coastal city located in the Manabí Province of Ecuador. I grew up in Manta, witnessing its constant development and exploring every corner of this beautiful town.

Good news, there’s plenty to cover, so let’s cut to the chase and go straight to it!

Let’s start with my favorite thing when I travel, to taste the local flavors.

The city is famous for its gastronomy, year-round great weather, wonderful beaches, and perfect location and amenities to explore the province.

1. Enjoy the local cuisine.

tours in manta ecuador

Manta is known for its delicious seafood, so try some local dishes such as ceviche, fried fish (camotillo), and shrimp. You can also try some local fruits such as maracuyá (passion fruit) and naranjilla.

Here are some of the most popular dishes and ingredients that you can find in Manta:

Ceviche: Ceviche is the star of the menu. This dish is made from raw fish marinated in citrus juice, typically lime or lemon, and mixed with onions, peppers, and other seasonings. Manta is famous for its ceviche, often made with local fish such as corvina (seabass), shrimp, or octopus.

Encebollado: Encebollado is a hearty soup made from fish, yuca, onions, and other seasonings. It is often eaten for breakfast or as a “cure for hangovers.”

Seafood soup: Seafood soup is a very typical and traditional recipe from the coast of Ecuador. As with seafood rice, you can add all kinds of seafood, fish, and shellfish in a seafood soup. It is a dish that is currently consumed throughout the country.

Camotillo: Fried fish, for us, is synonymous with the beach. It’s as simple as that. This is how fish is eaten in Ecuador. With white rice, patacones (fried green plantains), chili sauce, and the classic tomato sauce with red onion seasoned with lemon. Delicious!

We usually say, if you haven’t tried ceviche, you haven’t visited Manta.

My personal recommendation for tasting our coastal gastronomy is Fish Cevicheria .

2. visit the murciélago beach..

tours in manta ecuador

This beautiful beach is one of the most popular attractions in Manta and is a great place to enjoy the sun, sand, and sea. You can swim, relax under the sun, or enjoy water sports such as surfing or kiteboarding.

Here are some more details about Murciélago Beach:

Amenities: There are several amenities available at Murciélago Beach, such as showers, restrooms, and changing rooms, located on the right side of the boardwalk. You can also find several restaurants and bars along the beach where you can enjoy some local cuisine and drinks. My personal pick to have a great meal at the beach is Jireh Restaurant .

Safety: Murciélago Beach is generally considered safe, but like any tourist destination, you should take precautions and keep an eye on your belongings. It is also important to pay attention to the ocean currents and follow the lifeguard’s instructions when swimming.

3. Explore the Fish Market.

narwell tours ecuador

“Playita Mia” is a popular fish market in Manta, Ecuador. It is located on the Malecón (boardwalk) of Manta and is known for offering fresh seafood caught daily by local fishermen.

What to expect?

Variety of seafood: “Playita Mia” offers a wide variety of seafood such as shrimp, octopus, squid, tuna, mahi-mahi, and of course, tuna. No wonder Manta is known as the “Tuna Capital.” You can buy fresh seafood or have it cooked on-site by the local cooks. The prices are generally reasonable.

Local culture: Visiting “Playita Mia” is a great way to experience the local culture of Manta. You can see the local fishermen bringing in their catch of the day and witness the bustling activity of the market. You can also interact with the locals and learn about their way of life.

Restaurants: Several restaurants located near “Playita Mia” offer fresh seafood dishes cooked to order. Enjoy some ceviche, fried fish, or other local delicacies while enjoying the ocean views.

Wooden Shipyard:  One of the last of its kind, this shipyard has a history of more than a 100 years. You can find carpenters working on fishing boats using the same techniques and tools as their ancestors. You can read more about the Manta’s shipyard here .

Accessibility: “Playita Mia” is easily accessible from the Malecón of Manta and is within walking distance from several hotels and attractions in the area. It is open daily from early morning to late afternoon.

The best tip to visit Manta’s fish market is the earlier you go, the better! So take your cup of coffee and enjoy the bustling activities carried out daily in the area.

4. Discover the Archaeological Museum.

tours in manta ecuador

The Banco Central Museum, also known as the Archaeological Museum of Manta, is a must-visit attraction in Manta, Ecuador. The museum is located on the Malecón (boardwalk) of Manta and is dedicated to showcasing the pre-Columbian history and culture of the region. Here are some more details about the museum:

Exhibits: The Banco Central Museum has a diverse collection of artifacts and exhibits that date back to the pre-Columbian era. The exhibits showcase the history and culture of the indigenous communities that lived in the Manabí region before the arrival of the Spanish. The collection includes ceramics, jewelry, textiles, and other artifacts that give a glimpse into the daily life, art, and religion of ancient cultures.

Guided tours: The museum offers guided tours in English and Spanish. The knowledgeable guides provide in-depth information about the exhibits and the region’s history.

Accessibility: The museum is easily accessible from the Malecón of Manta and is within walking distance from several hotels and attractions in the area. It is open daily from morning to late afternoon.

5. Take a Boat Tour and explore the marine scene.

Coastline Manta

Beautiful hidden beaches surround Manta, and taking a boat tour is a great way to explore the coastline. A few boat tours in Manta offer a variety of experiences, from whale watching to sunset cruises.

Whale watching tours: Manta is a popular destination for whale watching, especially from June to September when humpback whales migrate to the area. Several tour operators offer whale-watching tours that take you to the open ocean to see these majestic creatures up close.

Fishing tours: Manta is known for its rich marine life, and fishing tours are a popular activity. These tours take you out into the open ocean to catch fish such as tuna, marlin, and swordfish.

Sunset cruises: If you’re looking for a romantic or relaxing activity, sunset cruises offer a beautiful way to enjoy the scenery around Manta. These cruises typically include drinks and snacks and provide stunning views of the sunset over the Pacific Ocean.

Diving experiences: Courses: If you are new to scuba diving or want to improve your skills, you can find diving operators who offer the experience from Manta. These courses range from beginner to advanced level and can help you learn about dive theory, equipment, and safety procedures.

When choosing a boat tour in Manta, choosing a reputable operator that follows safety guidelines and regulations is essential. In addition, the equipment should be well-maintained, and the guides should be experienced and knowledgeable about the local waters.

6. Visit the Pacoche Wildlife Refuge.

manta shore excursion

This natural protected area is located south of Manta, only 30 minutes away, and offers a variety of activities such as hiking, birdwatching, and swimming. You can also visit the beautiful beaches of Cape San Lorenzo, Liguiqui, and “La Botada,” some of the most beautiful beaches on the Ecuadorian coast.

What activities are allowed in Pacoche?

Hike through the rainforest: Many trails in the Pacoche rainforest allow visitors to explore the area’s natural beauty. The trails vary in difficulty and length, so there’s something for everyone.

Birdwatching: Pacoche rainforest is home to over 300 species of birds, including toucans, parrots, and hummingbirds. Birdwatching tours are available with experienced guides who can help visitors spot different species.

Wildlife spotting: Besides birds, the Pacoche rainforest is home to other wildlife, such as monkeys, sloths, and anteaters. Visitors can go on guided tours to spot these animals in their natural habitat.

Beach activities: Visitors can enjoy activities such as swimming, surfing, and snorkeling, or if you want to contribute to the conservation, you can offer to volunteer to beach cleaning brigades that are organized every few months or help monitor the sea turtle nests throughout the year.

You can read more about Pacoche Wildlife Refuge here .

As you may recall, there are many activities you can enjoy in the city.

If this is not enough, you can start looking at neighboring towns like Montecristi, a small village near Manta known for its Panama hats. You can visit the factories where the hats are made, learn about the history of the hats, and even buy one as a souvenir.

More about Montecristi in the next post. Stay tuned!

My Trip To Ecuador

Top Things To Do in Manta, Ecuador

Beach in Manta Ecuador

Situated on the central pacific coast, Manta is a port city in Manabi province, Ecuador. Known for its beaches, and fishing industry, this city is bustling with tourists mostly during the summer season. We spent a few days in the city, so I am happy to share my personal experience.

Manta is a commercial center that initially exports Monthecristi panama hats . Today, Manta exports coffee, cacao, textiles, and fish. The city has a tuna cannery which made the tuna industry in Manta bloom. When resorts started to open at Manta’s coast, the surge in tourism continued and still continues to grow up to this day.

Most tourists in Manta visit the place for water sports such as surfing, kitesurfing, and fishing. Manta is also known to be one of the cruise stops in South America. The laid-back, small coastal town vibes of the Manta do not only attract tourists but also ex-pats and retirees as their numbers also continue to grow in Manta.

It was one of the cities we passed by during our 15-day self-drive trip to Ecuador Mainland .

What To Do in Manta, Ecuador

Due to Manta’s geographical location , water sports and activities are pretty popular here. Here are some of the places and fun things you should not miss when you are in Manta, Ecuador:

Playa Santa Marianita is one of the most popular beaches, if not the most, in Manta. It is known for the great sunset views, great food, and of course, kitesurfing.

Playa San Lorenzo

Playa San Lorenzo has stunning views from a cliff which you can hike. There is also an amazing rock formation at the end of the beach which is also worth seeing.

Playa de Tarqui

Playa de Tarqui fish market in Manta

Playa de Tarqui is where fishermen drop their catch every morning. The beach is just in front of the seafood market. If you are curious, you should head to Playa de Tarqui early in the morning.

Walk at Malecón Esenico

Malecón Esenico is close to the cruise port terminal. There are many shops and restaurants in the area so if you are up to a food trip or shopping for some Panama hats, stroll around Malecón Esenico. You can also find the fishing fleet at the port which is an interesting sight.

Malecón Esenico also serves as a function venue for social events. They also hold a carnival party every year where local talents are showcased.

Kitesurfing

Kitesurfing is one of the famous activities in Manta. If you are planning to kitesurf, Playa San Marianita is the place to be, as it is known as the capital of kitesurfing in Ecuador. Kitesurfing competitions and festivals are also often held in Playa San Marianita. If you are a beginner in kitesurfing, you can book kitesurfing lessons with certified instructors in the area.

I am surfing in Manta, Ecuador

Surfing is also one of the popular activities in Ecuador. There are several surfing spots in Ecuador but if you want to surf in Manta, San Mateo Beach is the best palace to go to. The waves on this beach are at their peak from December to March. For surfing beginners, there are surf lessons available in the area that you can take.

Sportfishing with Local Yacht Clubs

Fishing during Tour 360 San Cristobal

If you are into fishing, you can book sport fishing charters in Salinas, Manta. One of the best local sportfishing charter you can find is the Blue Marlin Fishing Charter . They use Hotteram, Bertram, and Ocean yachts that are all fully equipped for fishing. They also offer packages that already include accommodation and ground transfers, so if your main goal in Manta is fishing, this trip is definitely one of the books.

Museo Arquelogico del Banco Central

Sombreros de paja toquilla (translated as toquilla straw hat) and more commonly known as Panama hat, is a handwoven hat made of fibers from toquilla. Toquilla comes from palm trees which are native to tropical countries like Ecuador.

The fineness is usually categorized as fino, fino fino, super fino. It normally takes months to weave a super fino and only a master weaver can do it.

Visit Machalilla National Park

Views of Machalilla National Park near Manta, Ecuador

Machalilla National Park was made to preserve the natural habitats of the diverse wildlife in Ecuador. The park has three main attractions: Los Frailes, Isla de Plata, and Agua Blanca. It’s considered to be one of the most beautiful national parks in Ecuador.

Los Frailes

Watching turtle while snorkelling at North Seymour Island (Mosquera Islet)

Los Frailes is a pristine stretch of beach where the fine-grained sand, deep blue seawater, and rolling hills meet. There is a huge portion of the beach that is off-limits to give way to nesting sea turtles.

Isla de Plata is like an accessible Galapagos Islands . Isla de Plata is home to some Blue-footed, Red-footed, and Nazca Boobies which are also found in Galapagos Islands. To get a full experience, try snorkeling or diving to explore the water world.

Agua Blanca

Ecuadorian heritage at Agua blanca

Agua Blanca is a local community inside the park where you can learn about the history and cultures of Ecuadorian heritage. There is also an archaeological museum, native forest, and local farmland. You can also find a lagoon inside which is also a tourist favorite.

Fresh seafood is a must when coming to coastal towns like Manta but there are also non-seafood dishes worth trying. Here are some of our favorite grub finds in Manta:

Trying fish ceviche in Quito on Ecuador Mainland

Fish Ceviche

Ceviche is a cold fish soup popular not only in Manta but in most coastal towns in South America. It is made with a variety of fish and shellfish and is usually served with diced onions, peppers, parsley, and plantains.

Encebollados

Trying Encebollados in Manta, Ecuador

This warm fish soup is made with albacore fish , onions, and a root crop called yucca . Some versions of Encebollados use mixed seafood instead of fish. It is usually served as breakfast and recommended for hangovers.

Seco de Chiva

Seco de Chivo restaurant dish_ braised goat stew with rice, tomatoes, avocados and fried bananas

We were able to taste this Ecuadorian goat stew in a local restaurant in Agua Blanca. The goat meat is braised in a sauce of achiote, oregano, peppers, onions, tomatoes, fermented corn drink, naranjilla, and other spices.

Make sure to check our detailed article on Ecuadorian food.

How To Get To Manta, Ecuador

Currently, the airport in Manta is only catering to domestic flights to and from the other cities in Ecuador.

For visitors from outside Ecuador, the major gateway to reach Manta is the airports of Quito and Guayaquil . You can transit in these cities and take a domestic flight going to Manta. It is worth noting that Guayaquil is closer to Manta.

For a more affordable trip, you may also opt to take a bus to Manta from the big cities of Quito or Guayaquil .

Manta is an eight-hour bus ride away from Quito. There are bus operators with trips to Manta that leave Quito every hour and costs about $15 per person.

From Guayaquill

If you are from Guayaquil, you can also ride a bus going to Manta which usually takes three hours and costs about. $10 per person.

Transport in Manta

Taxis are also a common utility vehicle in Manta. The fares are cheap so if you are going to places a few kilometers away from where you are, taking a cab is the best option. We were using taxis all the time.

Buses are also accessible in Manta and there are several bus routes going in and out of the city. Keep in mind, some bus routes could be sketchy, so I’d recommend sticking to

Manta’s Climate, and Weather

The hottest days in Manta are normally between March and April. The hottest temperature goes as high as 30 degrees celsius. Always bring your sunscreen whether you are hitting the beach or just strolling outside.

Rain is common in Manta so better take an umbrella with you whenever you are outside. The month of April has the lowest chance of rain in Manta.

The months of August to October are the best time to visit Manta.

Safety Tips To Explore Manta, Ecuador

Manta is a safe place for tourists and locals alike. But as responsible travelers, be always on your guard and be vigilant while enjoying your trip.

Always carry loose change for easier transactions in markets and shops, even in taxis. As mentioned, the weather in Manta is normally hot with chances of rain so do not forget to pack your hats, sunscreens, and compact foldable umbrellas.

Visiting Manta is seeing another side of Ecuador. Being in a coastal town with fishing ports, and beaches will make you pause and appreciate the everyday life of the locals living in Manta. Personally, a week of staying in Manta is not enough for someone like me who loves the sea. I would rate it as a 5 out of 10 though and can’t say it’s a must-visit place in Ecuador. I'm Oleg, and together with my wife, we've explored Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands, journeying through more than 20 cities ( Quito , Cuenca , Banos , Tena , Puyo , Guayaquil , Riobamba , Otavalo , Mindo and more) and nearly every island in the Galapagos (including iconic ones such as Bartolome Island , San Cristobal Island , Isabela Island , Santa Cruz Island and more). In this blog, I give you my real thoughts about each place we visited. This info can help anyone planning a trip to the Galapagos Islands or mainland Ecuador . Manta can be reached by air from Quito, by land from anywhere in the country and by sea. The Eloy Alfaro International Airport has direct flights from Quito every day and will soon receive international flights.

The Manta Scenic Boardwalk borders Playa Murciélago in the center of the city. Here you will find several souvenir shops, restaurants and bars.

For religious people I recommend going through the Cathedral of La Dolorosa, since it is a beautiful cathedral that is worth visiting. Its architecture is unique and very beautiful. Another beautiful place is the Plaza Cívica Eloy Alfaro and its monument to the former president.

You will be able to view a collection of paintings, ceramics, sculptures, ancient and current pre-Columbian artifacts. You will also be able to learn about the different cultures that inhabited the Pacific coast of Ecuador throughout history. Admission is free and you can take a guided tour where they will explain more about each section of the museum.

This hike is approximately 2 kilometers through the reserve, which is made up of more than 5,000 hectares of coastal humid forest and 4 beaches. Along the trail you will be able to observe the fauna and flora of the place. The guide will show you the places where the birds nest, since it is an excellent place to observe birds in Ecuador. The animals that are most easily seen are the micos and howler monkeys. Other animals that inhabit this dry forest are squirrels, deer, bobcats, and armadillos.

Access is free although you have to hire a guide to walk the trail. The guide costs $20 for groups of 1 to 10 people. The tour lasts between two and two and a half hours. The reserve was created because the humid forest is an endangered habitat along the Ecuadorian Pacific coast.

The Pasaje del Mono Trail starts out as a simple wide path but as it continues the path turns to a more natural state including multiple small stream crossings. It is important to wear suitable footwear for the walk, sunscreen, DEET-free repellent, water, and long pants as well as a long-sleeved shirt.

The refuge is open to the public from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM every day of the year.

Visit Manta’s beautiful beaches

tours in manta ecuador

The canton of Manta has a total of 13 beaches that make up the tourist portion of this coastal canton. Most of these beaches are located within the urban area of Manta while others are 30 minutes to 1 hour drive away from the center of Manta.

Beaches in Manta:

tours in manta ecuador

The most popular and famous beach in Manta is Playa Murciélago, which is located next to the scenic boardwalk. Playa Murciélago is the most beautiful beach within the urban area of Manta. There you can find several kiosks that sell cocktails, beers and non-alcoholic beverages. Several restaurants and street vendors can also be found in the area.

tours in manta ecuador

From the beach there are several aquatic tours that can be done such as snorkeling, the banana boat, tubing, diving and other activities leave from this beach. Near the beach are some of the most luxurious hotels in Manta and Mall del Pacifico, the largest and most important shopping center in the city.

tours in manta ecuador

Access to the beach is inclusive, as it has access ramps for people with reduced mobility. It is a clean beach in relation to the other beaches within Manta’s urban area. It has the name of Bat since the shape of the beach seen from above looks like a bat with its wings spread.

tours in manta ecuador

Playita Mía is one of the most traditional beaches in Manta but also one of the dirtiest in my opinion. The beach is located between the parishes of Tarqui and Los Esteros. The Seafood Market is located on this beach, so all the garbage from the fishermen collects on the sand and in the sea.

As the city’s shipyard is also located on this beach, all the garbage from those who build or repair boats stays on the shore. If you are on this beach, remember to go through Parque de Los Mariscos, a complex with several restaurants that specialize in seafood. It is an excellent place to try typical Manaba food.

I did not like it much, since it was very very dirty. Here you can see how the ships enter and leave the port.

Again, I don’t like it because it’s very dirty. It is the ideal spot to buy fresh fish from the fishermen or to play volleyball or sport fishing.

tours in manta ecuador

I did not like it because it is a very rocky beach. Not ideal for bathing. You can enter by stairs that go to the sea (put Barbasquillo beach on your GPS and it will take you to that entry point). Otherwise you have to be staying at one of the hotels that offers direct access to the beach.

Beaches on the outskirts of Manta:

tours in manta ecuador

One of the best things to do bear Manta is to visit San Lorenzo beach. In my opinion it is the most beautiful beach in all of the Manta Canton. The beach is located an hour drive from the center of Manta. What I like the most is that it is a clean beach, with fine sand, a calm climate and an atmosphere where you can breathe tranquility. The times I have gone it is always almost empty of other beachgoers.

tours in manta ecuador

In San Lorenzo you can go up to the lighthouse to enjoy panoramic views of the area, through the beach or by car to a point and from there walk to the lighthouse. The ideal route is to get in the car to the high point and from there go down the stairs until you reach the beach. It is a beautiful place thanks to the arches, caves and different rock formations that are at the end of the beach. It is not recommended to bathe in the sea, since the tide is very strong, so much so that it is known as a great surfing spot.

tours in manta ecuador

Another thing you can do in San Lorenzo is visit the San Lorenzo waterfall, although when I went it wasn’t really worth the trip. During the whale watching season, San Lorenzo is a paradise to see these beautiful mammals dance along the Pacific coast.

tours in manta ecuador

San Lorenzo is also the main nesting ground for olive ridley sea turtles in Ecuador. Along the beach you will see several places fenced off with signage, these are the nests of the turtles, please do not approach them. This beach is pet friendly but please do not go with animals to the beach during the hatching season.

During the months of September to November at night you can watch the turtles lay their eggs, it is very important to remember that you cannot touch them or take photos. You must keep a distance of at least two meters. If you want to observe the birth of the turtles and the tremendous walk to the sea, you have to go in the months of December and January. Remember not to use a flashlight or cell phones, since the turtles are guided by the moon to find their way to the sea and can get confused easy with artificial lights.

The beach is in a picturesque fishing village.

tours in manta ecuador

For Kitesurfing lovers, the best option is Playa Santa Marianita, since during the months of May to December the winds are even stronger. In fact, Santa Marianita is considered the best South American beach for kitesurfing due to its strong winds and its long length. The beach has Kitesurfing schools and several restaurants. During the whale watching season you will be able to observe them from the shore.

It is a fairly long beach with more sand than stones. I recommend eating at the Yanfer, Michell and Leidy cabins (I loved the last one). To give you an idea of the prices, the fish biche costs $4 USD, the breaded shrimp costs $8 USD, and the jug of lemonade costs $5 USD.

When the tide is low you can see archaeological sites and the marine corrals used by the first civilizations that inhabited this area. Today, unfortunately, they are used to catch octopuses.

I loved this beach, in fact it is one of my favorites. It has a small pool with sea water where children can bathe. The waves seemed to be a regular size and with more sand than stones along the beach. There are several restaurants, coconut vendors and bathroom near the parking lot. You can also go up a path to the La Tiñosa Lighthouse.

The beach was nothing special for me. The truth is that I did not like the cement wall on the beach. I found it to be a very rocky beach, and I think Manta has nicer beaches. If you go with your pet it is an excellent beach since there are not many waves. If you are in Piedra Larga you must visit the famous Iguana bar.

Other beaches that you can visit further south are Playa Las Piñas and Playa Santa Rosa . I didn’t get to visit these beaches yet.

The town of Montecristi is only 30 minutes from the center of Manta. It is the birthplace of the Toquilla Straw hat, also known in English as the Panama Hat.

Fun fact: When the Panama Canal was being built, many of the workers wore this hat because of its high quality and the sun protection it provides. It was then that former US President Theodore Roosevelt visited the Panama Canal during construction in 1906 and was photographed with this hat, that’s why it is called Panama Hat. Unfortunately they did not know that the hat came from Ecuador.

One of the things you should do in Montecristi is visit the toquilla straw hat workshops and shops and watch the making of these famous items. In the central square on weekends and holidays you can enjoy a little market where you can see and buy different products made of toquilla straw.

In the upper part of Montecristi you can visit Ciudad Alfaro, where in 2008 all the assembly members of Ecuador met to write the new Ecuadorian Constitution during the government of Rafael Correa. There is the museum and mausoleum of Eloy Alfaro, former Ecuadorian president (1897 and 1911) and revolutionary born in Montecristi.

Eloy Alfaro was a liberal politician with very advanced ideas for the time, which is why he was unfortunately burned at the stake by the opposition. He was dragged by various railroad tracks, which he built himself. For me it is an honor to be able to say that Eloy Alfaro was our president because he is an example of how even though people are not prepared for our progressive ideas, we must continue fighting to move our countries forward and achieve the development that our peoples deserve. Maybe the time is not right for many, but history always highlights the heroes and the true fighters of progress and development.

I recommend you walk its streets and take photos with colonial-style buildings and of course visit the Sanctuary of the Virgin of Monserrate.

You cannot leave Montecristi without trying the best manaba cheese and the best rosquitas in all of Ecuador.

Pile another place where toquilla straw hats are made. In fact, some of the most valuable hats (+20,000 USD) in the world have come from this small Manabita town. That is why I recommend you walk through the town and talk with the artisans and learn more about this trade, which is a national heritage.

Beaches to visit in the North of Manta

Excellent place for paragliding. The beach is not to my liking, although here you can find several lodging options and delicious restaurants.

It is not to the liking of many people, since it does not have much space to rest on the sand, as its boardwalk is practically over the sea.

It has a long beach, good restaurant options and a variety of accommodation.

Beaches to visit in the South of Manta

10 Best Things to Do in Manta Ecuador – By a Local Guide

spear fishing things to do in manta ecuador

Manta is a small city full of interesting things to see and do on the pacific coast. There are many factors that made Manta perfect for my family and I. For me, it is in the goldilocks zone. Not too big, Nor too small. Not too hot, Nor too cold. Just right. Apart from the climate, a big part of its attraction is the variety of activities and amenities. From water sports and Cycling routes to Pre-Columbian history and culture, this is our list of things to do in Manta Ecuador.

Table of Contents

Fun things to do in Manta Ecuador

Beach life is the best life.

Situated around the midpoint of the pacific coast of Ecuador, Manta attracts many tourists from outside the country as well as within other areas of the country during the holiday seasons. Tourists from Guayaquil and Quito travel to take advantage of the numerous scenic beaches and coastal culture. The main beach in manta right next to the cruise ship terminal is the “Playa Murcielago”. It has a lot to offer with banana boat rides and inflatable watersports. There are Jetskis for rent as well as jetski powered hoverboards and other toys.

It is the beach that gets most crowded during holidays and peak seasons so I prefer San Mateo. This little fishing village is quickly being swallowed by the expansion of Manta.

San Mateo beach

About 15 minutes from the centre this beach has a much more relaxed laid back atmosphere. You can still rent the Jetskis and ride the Banana boats so be ready for a fun time. They have a great beach club there called Silver Island, perfect for a cold drink and some shade after too much fun in the sun. You can rent surfboards, Bodyboards, Paddleboards kayaks and much more here, from around $10 an hour. If you get there during the mornings it is almost always flat calm ocean conditions. The wind gets up around 11 am usually but still a very calm beach. There are also plenty of traditional Ecuadorian restaurants here for some fresh as can be seafood. Be warned though it is very rustic. A lot of bamboo and palm leaves.

Where there are beaches, there is Fishing

One of the major attractions to manta for me was the beach life and watersports. I grew up on boats and beaches in the UK and Europe so it was a must-have for me. I had not however done any real fishing before coming here. One day on the beach by chance I saw some friendly-looking local chaps coming out of the water with spear guns and some fish. I got talking to them and they offered to take me spearfishing. I was hooked. Excuse the pun. I quickly learned I loved freediving (diving underwater with no breathing equipment). This opened up a world of spearfishing and snorkelling all over the coast an even rivers of Ecuador. don’t worry there is a big rod fishing scene in Manta too.

Manta is not the capital of tuna fishing for nothing. Huge varieties of marine life pass by the manta coast at one point or another during the year making for great fishing grounds. The local yacht club although a little run down has many different fully equipped boats and experienced captains willing to take clients out for a day on the water. Marlin and sailfish are a frequent catch as well as Wahoo, Amberjack and Grouper.  In 1985 a world record-breaking marlin was hooked. Coming in at 1014 pounds. So you never know, maybe you can set a new record.

Kitesurfing and cocktails

Just up the coast from Manta is a great beach town that we often visit, Santa Marianita. It is famous for great food, amazing sunsets and most of all Kite Surfing. I have yet to try it but it’s on my list. Santa Marianita is the capital of kitesurfing in Ecuador and often hosts competitions and festivals. This is a great sport to watch from the comfort of the beach bars and restaurants, especially as the sunsets here are divine. A BBQ on this beach is as good as it gets.

kite surf things to do around manta ecuador

There are a lot of other watersports and seaside activities I could mention. Not least of all the Whale watching trip is a must. How do you feel small when one of these magnificent creatures breaches meters from the boat. Alas, I will try and contain my adoration of the Ocean and continue with more land-lover things.

Manta has some of the best Bicycle routes on the coast of Ecuador. Many cycling clubs from here and other parts of the country come to ride along with the sunny coast. You can rent bikes for a nice day out from around $5, or join one of the clubs for more elaborate and challenging expeditions. Many people enjoy riding fro manta to San Mateo beach, which has a dedicated cycle lane almost all the way.

ciclying-things-to-do-in-manta-ecuador

If you are looking for something more relaxed than watersports and cycling, I highly recommend a nice walk through the Pacoche Rainforest. About 20 minutes from the town center the landscape changes from arid beach town to thick and lush jungle. It can be a real relief to get away from the hot sun and feel a little chill fresh air sometimes. Here you can find Howler and Capuchin Monkeys, Giant snails, Tarantulas and many more native species. Be prepared for a few mosquitos during the wet season. Wear long trousers and a little repellant on the arms. It is a protected area so the park rangers oblige you to pay $20 to a local guide to walk around with you. Which is better because they are always fun and knowledgeable. This is one of our favourite locations to take our cruise ship passengers on our Rain forest shore excursion.

nature treeking things to do in manta ecuador

Another great place is the sea turtle nesting beach at San Lorenzo. Just a stone’s throw from the Pacoche rainforest we normally visit here on the same shore tour, to scale the cliffside steps up to the lighthouse and Fantastic views. A great spot to see the whales breaching at sea as well during the season.

A little further afield we often take a quiet Sunday to walk around the botanic gardens or La Rotunda” Park in Portoviejo. About 30 minutes from Manta, this town is the capital of the Province and has some very nice parks and public spaces to check out.

History and Culture

If you are looking for some history there is a great museum in Montecristi at the Ciudad Alfaro complex. Perched halfway up the Montecristi mountain about 15 minutes from Mantas town centre. There are exhibitions on the indigenous pre-Columbian cultures, local artisan goods as well as one of the country’s most famous presidents, Eloy Alfaro. Well worth the trip for tourists and locals alike. This is another one of our most popular shore excursion tours. Find out more by clicking here, Montecristi Panama hat tour. The complex also has a very large assembly room used for some special government congress meetings. After learning a lot in the museum, you can walk down the scenic wooden promenade into Montecristi town centre and get something to eat or shop around in the artisan shops.

visit ciudad alfaro things to do in manta ecuador

There are 2 smaller museums in the city centre which are worth a visit. Some other tour operators offer these as main attractions, but we find they are too small for the time it takes to visit them so we much prefer Montecristi. Having said that, the “Museo del banco central” has some nice exhibitions on Precolumbian artefacts and some nice modern art too. The second option is a very small museum called “ Museo Municipal Etnográfico Cancebí ”. Nice for a quick stop if you’re in the area.

Further afield I would say the best places to visit for history and culture would be “Agua Blanca” and “Cero hojas de Jaboncillo” these are both about 90 minutes drive from Manta respectively, but well worth the trip. I love the thermal sulfate bath at Aguas Blancas. Nothing like a mud bath to freshen the skin.

Things to buy in Manta

Shopping is the favourite activity for some people, I’m thinking of my dear wife of course. So we can’t forget where to get some of the best bits and bobs in Manta. We have 2 big shopping malls that have just about everything you could need for you standard items. The most modern Mall is right in front of the main beach, the “Mall del Pacifico”. I live a few blocks from here so it’s my favourite. I can’t stand shopping but I do love the Cinema so you will often find me getting my tickets early here and maybe grabbing a coffee in the Juan Valdez coffee shop.

So where to get the more exotic or iconic items, best for souvenirs is the better question. Well, we have vigorously investigated that very subject and written all about it in another blog post. We recommend you read our article Things to buy in Manta, Ecuador . For me, a few of the top choices are the wonderful Panama Hats. Handmade in Montecristi for hundreds if not thousands of years, these fashion accessories are amazing. Such dexterity and patience required to make a true fine weave hat, they should be valued before this art form is lost to the mass production factories of china or India. We can get Panama hats and much more on our Montecristi Panama hat tour, click here for details.

Where to eat in Manta

No list of the best things to do in Manta Ecuador would be complete without talking about where one should break bread and have a cold drink. There are so many options to choose from so it really depends on your taste and mood. After writing about all those water sports and fishing I’m in the mood for sushi. Sappari is the best place for me. I can’t wait for a Tuna Maki roll. Another choice would be a fresh Ceviche or a Jaimitos Gringo Pizza. Have a look at our article detailing the best places to eat in Manta Ecuador for many more gems. I better move on before I get too hungry.

Nightlife in Manta

If you are staying for more than one day, then we have to think about nightlife. We could hit the salsa bars and try our luck with the Latin beat. Maybe a Piano bar or some bowling might be better. I recommend you read our blog post on Manta Ecuador Nightlife to learn all about the fun ways to enjoy your evenings. My favourite is to end the day at Santa Marianita, Just like we do on our Montecristi Panama hat tour.

enjoy nightlife things to do in manta ecuador

This article was hard to compress down into a digestible amount. There is a lot to do in Manta that’s for sure. More than you can do in one day. If you are or will soon be on a cruise ship due to dock in Manta it will be hard to narrow down the best options. So I recommend you read our article on exactly what to do if you only have 1 day in Manta Ecuador.

So there you have it. There is a lot more to do in and around Manta Ecuador and the best thing about this city is its centre. So you can very quickly travel to other parts of the country for a change of scenery. I often pop down to Guayaquil, for example, to take the family to the Zoo, the Theater and other big city amenities. Let us know if there is anything you think we missed off the list.

The Rich Tapestry of Manta’s History

Nestled along the Pacific Coast of Ecuador, Manta has a history that spans millennia, painting a vivid picture of ancient civilizations, colonial influences, and modern developments.

Dive into this chronicle and discover the events and cultures that have shaped Manta into the vibrant city it is today.

Ancient Beginnings

Long before the Spanish set foot on South American shores, the region around Manta was inhabited by the Manteño civilization.

Flourishing between 800 and 1534 AD, the Manteños are credited with being skilled weavers, potters, and, most notably, seafarers.

Manteño Seafaring Legacy

The Manteño people were renowned for their maritime prowess, conducting extensive trade across the Pacific coastline using their large balsa wood rafts.

They traded Spondylus shells, a symbol of wealth and status, with inland and coastal tribes. These shells, often found in archaeological excavations, testify to the intricate trade networks of the time.

Colonial Era and Spanish Influence

The arrival of the Spanish in the early 16th century marked a significant turning point in Manta’s history.

Conquest and Colonization

Led by conquistadores, the Spanish quickly subdued the Manteño civilization and integrated Manta into the Spanish colonial empire. The city’s strategic coastal location made it an essential port for the Spanish, facilitating trade and communication with other colonies.

Cultural Fusion

The colonial period saw a melding of Spanish and indigenous cultures. This fusion is evident in Manta’s architectural, culinary, and artistic landscapes. The city’s colonial-era churches and buildings bear testimony to this unique blend.

Independence and Modern Growth

The winds of change swept through South America in the 19th century, leading to Ecuador’s independence from Spanish rule.

Manta’s Role in Independence

While Manta was not a primary battleground, its citizens played a role in the broader Ecuadorian struggle for freedom, supporting revolutionary ideals and movements.

Economic Evolution

Post-independence, Manta began to solidify its position as a significant port and economic hub.

The 20th century saw the growth of the tuna fishing industry, earning Manta the title of the “Tuna Capital of the World.” The city’s port also became central for oil exports, further boosting its economic significance.

Preserving the Past

Today, Manta gracefully balances its historical heritage with modernity. Several initiatives ensure the preservation of ancient sites, colonial architecture, and cultural practices.

The Museo del Banco Central in Manta offers insights into the city’s ancient and colonial past, displaying artifacts from the Manteño civilization and the Spanish era.

The history of Manta is a tale of resilience, adaptability, and cultural amalgamation. As you wander its streets, dine in its eateries, or interact with its locals, you’re not just experiencing a city—you’re stepping into a living narrative shaped by centuries of evolution.
