Train travel UK & Ireland...

Train travel in europe..., train travel in asia..., train travel in africa..., train travel in america..., train travel in australasia, europe to australia without flying....

It's a long way to Oz.  There are two options to get there from the UK without flying:

Option 1, Europe to Australia via the Trans-Siberian Railway .  You can travel by train from London to Moscow, then by Trans-Siberian Railway to China & the Far East, then catch a passenger-carrying freighter (if you can find one!) or cruise ship to Australia.  This is a real adventure, and a popular choice with lots to see on the way.  Not currently feasible because of the war in Ukraine & Russia being off limits .

Option 2, Europe to Australia by sea .  You can go all the way from the UK to Australia or New Zealand by sea, either a leisurely direct voyage by infrequent round-the-world cruise, or by one of the few remaining passenger-carrying freighters, sometimes with the need to switch ships in either the USA or SE Asia.  Expect Europe to Australia by sea to take at least 32-40 days and cost at least £4,000+ one-way by freighter including cabin & meals, much more if you use a cruise.

This page outlines the journey and how to go about putting such a trip together, with links to other pages for more detailed information about each part of the journey.  Please remember this is not a tour or a package, just some guidance in putting your own independent trip together using scheduled train services across Europe and Asia.

Europe to Australia by sea

By freighter or cruise ship.

If you'd been going to Australia in the first half of the 20th century, you could have caught the fortnightly P&O liner from Southampton to Sydney, taking several weeks.  These days there are no regular passenger ships from the UK or Europe to Australia, and your choice is limited to one of these, if currently operating:

There are occasional round-the-world cruises from Europe to Australia, stopping at various places on the way.  Some sail westward around the world via the Panama Canal, others sail eastwards via either the Suez Canal or South Africa and the Cape of Good Hope.  This is the most comfortable but expensive option.

There are freighters which take a limited number of passengers although they are now getting very thin on the ground.  There are a mere handful of direct Europe-Australia freighters which carry a few passengers, or there are freighters from Europe to SE Asia where you can change onto another freighter or a cruise ship from SE Asia to Australia.

You can take the Queen Mary 2 from Europe to New York (or use a passenger-carrying freighter), take a train from coast to coast across the United States , then take a passenger-carrying freighter to Australia from the Pacific seaboard of the USA.

To find out more, and to book a cruise or freighter passage to Australia, try the following sites:

Europe to Australia by Trans-Siberian Railway

Overland to the far east by train.

It's possible to travel most of the way from London to Australia by train via the Trans-Siberian Railway.  In fact, quite a number people travel this way.  Time-wise, we're talking 4-5 weeks one-way, minimum.  But it's a journey of a lifetime.

Update 2024:  There is a war in Ukraine, travel to Russia is inadvisable, there are currently no international trains to Moscow and no Moscow-Beijing trains.

Route, timetable & costs

Travel tickets alone costs only £750 or so from London as far as Singapore, but you must add food, hotels, and tours along the way.  The links below cover travel in either direction, from London to Australia or Australia to London, follow the links to see details of prices and timetables for each section.

Step 1:  London to Moscow by train .  Daily departures taking 2 nights.  Spend at least 1 night in Moscow.

Step 2:  Moscow to Beijing by Trans-Siberian Railway   Two direct trains every week each taking 6 nights.  Spend at least 1 night in Beijing.

Step 3:  Beijing to Hanoi by train A train runs twice a week taking 2 nights, or you can travel any day with a change of train at Nanning.  Spend at least 1 night in Hanoi.

Step 4:  Hanoi to Saigon by train   Several trains daily, 2 nights.  Why not stop off to see Hue or Hoi An?  Spend at least 1 night in Saigon.

Step 5:  Saigon-Phnom Penh by bus Daily, 1 day.  Spend at least 1 night in PP.

Step 6:  Phnom Penh-Bangkok by bus to the border at Poiphet, then local train from Aranyaprathet to Bangkok .

Step 7:  Bangkok to Singapore by train .  Daily, 2 nights.

Step 8:  The final sea voyage from Asia to Australia is the problem:

You can get from Singapore as far as Bali in Indonesia by scheduled ferry, train, ferry & bus using the ferries from Singapore to Jakarta , see the Indonesia page .  But there are no regular passenger ships to Australia from Singapore or Indonesia or anywhere in the Far East .  And don't bother trying to island hop down to Dili in East Timor, it may look the closest land to Darwin, but there are absolutely no ferries of any kind from there to Australia.

You therefore need an infrequent passenger-carrying freighter for the last leg from Southeast Asia to Australia.  There are one or two Asia-Australia freighters that will carry passengers.  They have very very few passenger places and get booked up, so book early.  Freighter travel is not cheap, with limited places in high demand.  Also bear in mind that schedules can change according to freight requirements, a ship can easily leave a day or two earlier than originally scheduled, so build in plenty of leeway!

Option 1 , shipping company CMA CGM have freight ships which carry a limited number of passengers between Port Klang in Malaysia & Fremantle near Perth in Australia every 46 days or so.  The voyage takes 7-10 days and costs around €1,300 for one person in a private cabin with meals included.  CMA CGM also have ships between Singapore & Brisbane roughly once a month taking 14 days.  Contact them directly via their website, www.voyagesencargo.com .  Various agencies can also book this freighter route for you, presumably with an added fee or mark-up, such as thecruisepeople.wordpress.com & www.traveltips.com .

Option 2 , try German agency www.slowtravel-experience.com who can offer infrequent sailings between Singapore & Fremantle near Perth on the ship MOL Guardian .

Option 3 , talk to Swiss company www.shipntrain.ch .  They have twice-monthly freighter sailings from Singapore to Fremantle (Perth) taking 7 days.  Their website is in German, so use Google language tools to translate it.  They also have a monthly Singapore-Melbourne freighter taking 15 days.

Feedback on freighter booking & travel would be appreciated.

How to plan & arrange this trip

There aren't any travel agencies who can arrange the whole trip from Europe to Australia, so you will need to plan and arrange each stage of the journey yourself.  It's an exercise in project management, and I use a simple spreadsheet technique like this to plan an itinerary and budget.  Unless time is absolutely no object, you should book the key sections in advance through various travel agencies, for example, book London-Moscow as shown on the London to Russia page , then book Moscow-Beijing & Beijing-Hanoi through a local Russian agency such as Svezhy Veter.  You also need to pre-book the freighter from Asia to Australia, as places are limited.  Tickets for other parts of the trip, for example, Hanoi-Saigon-Phnom Penh-Bangkok can all be bought locally, as you go along.  The place to start is the sea section from Asia to Australia, as that will determine the dates for the rest of the trip.

You'll need to pre-arrange visas for Belarus, Russia, possibly Mongolia, China & Vietnam.  Cambodian visas can be obtained at the frontier.  In many ways, complying with the various visa requirements (and in some cases, requirements for confirmed onward tickets to be held) is actually the biggest hassle, not buying the tickets for the trains, so check this out carefully using the relevant embassy websites.

So where do you start?

First, read through the seat61 pages linked above, as these explain the options for each stage of the journey.

Then sketch out your itinerary using a simple spreadsheet like this , deciding where and for how long you want to stop off.

Next, check out the visa situation for each country.

Finally, follow the advice on each seat61 page to buy tickets for each train journey that you want to pre-book.

Imagine for a moment that you are on the deck of a ship, sipping a glass of wine. You turn your head towards the water just in time to spot a pod of dolphins swimming by or flying fish, providing company in the ocean. After lingering in the sunshine for a while, it's time to head inside for a 3-course evening meal and a splash in the pool before retiring to bed.

Now, what kind of vessel are you on?

No, you are not on a standard commercial cruise ship. You are not on a packed luxury liner hopping between Caribbean islands. You are aboard a modern freighter. Hundreds of cargo ships, carrying everything from fire engines to apples, are crossing the world's oceans, and many are happy to take you along for the ride. Adventurous travelers, including the Transitions Abroad family, have been doing so for years, as have many long before us.

What Does Travel on a Cargo Ship Feel Like?

A far more intimate and relaxed experience than you might imagine! The experience on board contrasts sharply with the rough and industrial outward appearance a container ship tends to project. You will be one of a handful of passengers among a crew likely to number up to a dozen or a few more. There will be no evening cabaret shows as on a standard cruise, though you may have access to TV, video, and board games in a common area on the ship where passengers may meet the crew. You may even play cards with the crew under the night skies. You might be invited to karaoke with the sailors, and you will almost always dine alongside the captain, who is far more likely to turn up in shorts and a t-shirt than in full uniform. Some cargo ships also offer equipped exercise rooms or pools.

Here was our first taste of the wonders of sea travel. Our introduction to freighter travel was a relatively short 5-day sailing between Australia and New Zealand. We joined the French ship CMA CGM Utrillo in the busy port of Melbourne, where our luggage — including two bicycles and bags — was quickly hauled on board and into a spacious cabin by a host of cheery Filipino deckhands.

What are the Costs of Cargo Ship Travel?

Depending upon your destination (Transatlantic, Transpacific, South Seas, Worldwide, and other special combinations), your daily freighter travel costs will be about $100-$130 per day per person per day with a luggage allowance of approximately 30kg-100kg (66-220lbs) depending on the line you are taking. Generally, US dollars are the primary currency used onboard to buy soft drinks, snacks, beer, and toiletries. You can then use your credit cards at each location you disembark.

What kind of Hospitality Can You Expect on Board?

Our next surprise was how quickly we felt part of the family. Just moments after arriving, our fellow passenger (a French woman "going around the world in 80 days”) hinted that the captain was sure to throw us a welcome barbecue. “He does that for every one new,” she said with a wink. Sure enough, the next evening was spent on the back deck of the ship, feasting on grilled fish and chatting with the seamen as the sun went down.

One of our concerns before sailing was that we'd find the days long. It was just the opposite. There were three square meals a day (hearty plates of meat and vegetables for workers) and our time between eating was filled with strolls around the deck and trips up to the bridge to check our position and ask questions.

Had there ever been stowaways? Yes, once a harmless passenger was allowed to board. What about pirates? Not here, but there were off the coast of Africa. And just how much fuel did a cargo ship need? In the current era of relatively low oil prices, $60,000 U.S. a day will generally cover the trip.

Why is it a Relaxing Way to Travel?

With our curiosity temporarily curbed, we would return to our cabin for reading our books or Kindle, journal writing, and a bit of table tennis if we felt especially energetic. Far away from the hustle and bustle of life on firm land, we were truly relaxed. The experience was in complete contrast to our usual hurried airplane trips.

For Hamish Jamieson, the owner of Freighter Travel NZ and one of only a handful of travel agents in the world licensed to book tickets on cargo ships, the simplicity of being at sea is the main attraction.

“When you're sitting up the front of the bow of the ship, on your own, and all you see is the sea going past and you hear the wind and waves, you're in heaven. For me, an afternoon...sitting right on the bow, watching the world go by with my binoculars, that's my heaven,” he said.

What Kind of Flexibility is Needed for Freighter Travel?

Of course, nothing in life is all smooth sailing. While we didn't encounter any problems during our trip, we did struggle with the uncertain nature of freighter travel before we boarded. Our initial departure date jumped forward first by three days and then seemed to bounce around by 12-24 hours every time we called to check the latest news. Ours was not an uncommon experience and you must prepare yourself for flexibility.

Even ports of call are not guaranteed because on a cargo ship, freight comes first, not the passengers. If the demand is not there for a certain stop, the ship will go where the business is.

“Our trip from the USA to Europe changed three times after initial booking,” said Rebecca Hogue and Scott Drennan, then on a journey around the world without using airplanes . Their initial trip from South Carolina to Belgium was from Florida to Italy. “Had we not been flexible with our departure times and locations, things would not have worked out.”

As Mr. Jamieson is fond of telling his passengers, when you go to sea, there are two things you must pack: a sense of humor and a sense of patience.

What are the Practical Issues?

Your trip may also involve some red tape, particularly concerning U.S. stops. American citizens are not permitted, for example, to travel within their country by cargo ship, although they can make international journeys. Meanwhile, travelers to the United States must have a visa, even if they would not need one to arrive by air. Only Canadians are exempt from this rule.

Be sure to budget time and money to get vaccinations like Yellow Fever if you are going through the Suez and Panama canals. A medical certificate declaring you in generally good health is another typical requirement.

Where in the World Do You Want to Go?

The hardest part of booking your cargo ship voyage is deciding where to go. Will it be to South America and around Cape Horn? How about a 55-day round trip from California to Australia and New Zealand via Tahiti and Mexico? Mr. Jamieson offers a few more ideas and favorite voyages based on years of experience.

“For me the ultimate voyage is from Auckland, in New Zealand, to Singapore. It takes 40-45 days to sail what you can fly in just under 12 hours but it visits nearly every island in the Pacific on the way and it stops for 2-3 days. The second choice for me would be from Singapore through to Houston in Texas. It goes up through Thailand, Vietnam, half a dozen ports in China, into Japan, then straight across the Pacific and through the Panama Canal.”

With enough time and money at your disposal--round-the-world trips can take 80 to 100 days or more--there are few places a cargo ship can't reach. Voyage destinations on cargo ships can change, so the many options available will often surprise you. You need to be adventurous enough to do your research, find a specialized cargo ship travel agent (see resources below), and then get on board.

The Golden Rules of Cargo Ship Travel

  • Be prepared to make your own fun. There are seldom programmed activities aside from the odd safety drill.
  • Go before you're too old. An upper age limit of 77-80 years is not uncommon, as no doctor on board and there are often plenty of stairs.
  • Check that your travel insurance covers freighter travel.
  • Be flexible. Schedules can and do change frequently. You may need 2-3 ships to reach your destination.
  • Book in advance. Cabins are limited and the most popular routes can be sold out by ships months ahead.
  • Forget about working in exchange for your passage. Current union rules mean this is no longer permitted.
  • Take a good supply of seasickness pills. While not very common, rough weather can occur, sending tables, chairs, and your stomach flying across the room.
  • Wifi and other modern electronics are now often available on cargo ships for travelers . If connectivity is important to you, ask whether those options are accessible and free in advance.

UPDATED SPRING 2024

Travelling on a cargo ship is a unique experience.  Whether you love the sea, are conscious of your carbon footprint, don't like flying or simply prefer to sail in a relaxed atmosphere, away from the crowds, then travelling by cargo ship is the right choice for you.

We've been doing this for over 30 years and are passionate about providing a personalised service tailored to your needs.

Alas, since the pandemic and with only a few exceptions, deep sea intercontinental voyages are no longer possible; shipowners and/or their charterers have withdrawn this discretionary activity, we are seeing little enthusiasm from them to resume the activity any time soon.

That means:

- No transatlantic voyages

- No Australia/New Zealand/Europe voyages

- No Europe/South America voyages

- No transpacific voyages

- No round the world voyages

- No voyages in around Asia or Oceania

However, still possible are:

- short haul European, Mediterranean, Baltic are bookable however 2024 availability is already limited on some routes.

- Europe/South Africa/Europe voyages but are fully booked well into 2025; waitlisting/standby is possible for additional cargo induced voyages on a rolling 6-week basis.

- French Polynesian voyages (mv Aranui V)

- mv Bella Desgagnes (St Lawrence River, Canada)

- mv St Helena, global voyages supporting the Extreme E organisation are available but bookable only close to departure.

There may be cruise ship alternatives, please ask if you have a specific voyage in mind as several Voyage Options are possible on some of the routes popular with cargo ship travellers. Note please that owing to the restrictive policies of the major cruise lines, in most cases you may only book cruises through a travel agent in your country of residence.

Do please take some time to check our website for available routes, also our ‘Ask the Captain’ section for frequently asked questions BEFORE contacting us!

Our website is updated regularly with currently bookable options; please do not contact us regarding deep sea international cargo voyages that are not listed as without the support and co-operation of willing shipowners we can no longer viably respond.

EUROPE BY SEA

Due to medical reasons we can’t fly but we would like to travel from Melbourne to Europe. Can we do a one-way cruise somewhere and drive the rest of the way? We don’t fancy the long cruise to UK.

Tracey Bremner is the operations manager of Clean Cruising, a member of Helloworld Travel. She says if you’re able to get yourselves to Sydney – where most of the “half world” cruises depart – this is definitely possible.

“Cruises to the Northern Hemisphere usually depart in March or April, after the ships have been down for our summer season,” she says. “An option would be to cruise to the US by ship, then through the Panama Canal or drive across America. You could then do the iconic Queen Mary 2 transatlantic voyage to arrive in the UK.

“There are also some great itineraries that depart Sydney and travel to Europe via Sri Lanka/Mumbai and the Middle East, however for this itinerary you are usually looking at a duration of at least 40-plus nights.”

Tracey says to get home you could hop on a Sea Princess world cruise.

“Alternatively there are other ships that come down to Australia or Asia via the Suez Canal in September/October,” she says.

“This sort of trip would certainly take some planning and research to match together the best itineraries. You would also need to book well ahead with the longer sectors, as they are usually bucket-list options for a lot of people who book well in advance.”

It can be done, but it’s best to travel from Sydney.

DRIVING IN THE USA

I’m visiting Flagstaff, Arizona, with my family from December 22-28. We’re flying in to Phoenix at 12.30pm on Sunday, December 22. Is it relatively easy and safe to drive from Phoenix to Flagstaff at that time of year? We don’t have any experience of driving on ice or snow and we just don’t know what the road conditions will be like. I’ve driven on American roads before and I’m comfortable doing so again, but I don’t know if chains would be necessary for such a drive. Any advice or reassurance you could offer would be appreciated.

You should be prepared for the possibility of delays or road closures. In February this year the interstate highway between Flagstaff and Phoenix was impassable in places for two days thanks to a significant snowstorm. Given your trip is fast approaching, you should be able to check the forecasts now and get a fairly good idea of any imminent weather along those lines.

Check out howmuchwillitsnow.com and plug in some of the destinations along your route. And if you want to save yourself the stress, there is a shuttle service between Phoenix and Flagstaff.

Leave the cherries behind.

NOT SO SWEET

I am spending Christmas in Bali and some family members have requested that I bring some Tasmanian fare, such as oysters, cherries and a ham. Can you advise if I can take them into Bali?

Leave the cherries at home because you’re not meant to bring fresh fruit in, but the oysters and ham should be fine. Just make sure you fill out your declaration form honestly.

ARCTIC DAY FLIGHTS

We are cruising from Buenos Aires, Argentina, to Santiago, Chile, in February. We would like to know if there are scenic daily flights from the Port of Ushuaia or Punta Arenas over Antarctic Peninsula.

Dap Airline offers flights to King George Island, about 120km from Antarctica. The daylong itinerary leaves from Punta Arenas and flies over the Straits of Magellan, Tierra del Fuego and the Darwin Mountains, Cape Horn, and the Drake Passage on a two-hour flight before landing at King George where you’ll visit Ardley Island in a Zodiac boat to see a 4500-strong gentoo penguin colony before continuing on to Collins Glacier.

View from the cabin of a privately chartered Qantas 747 for Antarctica Flights' 12-hour jaunt over the southern continent.

You would need to be prepared for weather-related cancellations or delays, so don’t book a trip such as this the day before you’re due to fly home, for example.

And the other catch? It will cost you more than $8000 ( dapairline.com/es/aventura-antartica ).

Maybe you should consider getting yourself to Melbourne instead, and taking a scenic flight from there with Antarctica Flights ( antarcticaflights.com.au ). There are two departures coming up – December 31 and February 16 – and ticket prices start from $1199. The 12½-hour flight involves about four hours over Antarctica in a chartered Qantas plane.

Cargo travel update:

Due to the consequences of the pandemic, passenger transport on cargo ships is limited to a few active routes.  Unfortunately, it doesn't look like operations will be returning back to normal.

Until further notice, only the routes listed above and below are available.

The European round trips from Hamburg or Barcelona are popular. While your ship is engaged in cargo operations in the various ports, you have time to explore the surroundings. If you take your bike with you, you are independent and flexibly mobile.

21-day round trip Hamburg - Canary Islands - Morocco - Spain: An exciting journey to the Canary Islands and ports in southern Spain awaits you. The turquoise water stretches out in front of the mighty grey city walls of Cadiz, and there is much to discover. Even from a distance you can make out the largest mosque in the world on the shore of the "white city" of Casablanca. A walk through the winding old town, the medina, will transport you to the world of the Orient. Spanish ports may vary depending on the itinerary, but Santa Cruz on Tenerife and Las Palmas on Gran Canaria are always key ports of call. This trip promises a variety of fascinating impressions and experiences.

28-day round trip Hamburg - Antwerp - Le Havre - Tangier - Casablanca - Agadir - Rotterdam - London Gateway - Hamburg: A fascinating liner service connecting the northern continent with the ports in Morocco. Agadir spoils visitors with a pleasant and mild climate all year round. The wide, golden beach invites you to take a walk and, in summer, to take a refreshing swim. A must is a visit to the lively fishing port of Agadir and the winding old town of Casablanca, if time permits. Ports may vary depending on the itinerary, but Casablanca and Agadir are fixed ports of call and are visited on every trip.

28-day round trip Barcelona - Casablanca - Algeciras - Tangier - Vigo - Leixoes - Lisbon - Tangier - Valencia - Barcelona: A varied round trip in the Mediterranean that starts in Barcelona and takes you to Morocco before you circumnavigate the entire Iberian Peninsula and explore numerous ports! In Leixoes, you can easily reach the market hall and the city centre with its diverse shops and cosy cafés on foot. Regardless of which terminal your ship docks at, both the northern part with its beautiful beaches and the southern part of the city are easily accessible. The port of Leixoes is fascinating: unlike most other ports, the largest container terminal is located at the back of the port. This means that your ship must first pass through a long port channel and an imposing bascule bridge. Casablanca and Tangier can even be visited twice during this voyage, giving you even more opportunities to explore these fascinating ports.

Freighter voyage Hamburg - South Africa: Four impressive general cargo/multi-purpose vessels invite you to a fascinating voyage from Hamburg to South Africa. This extraordinary voyage offers the possibility to be booked either as a complete round trip from and to Hamburg or as partial routes between Hamburg - Antwerp - Walvis Bay/ Namibia - Cape Town/ South Africa - Durban - Cape Town - Rotterdam - Hamburg, depending on your individual preferences.

Supply Route New Zealand - Pitcairn: A very special cruise to the world's most remote island, in the middle of the Pacific Ocean and 5,000 km from both South America and New Zealand. Once a week, the supply ship brings guests and essential goods from Mangareva in French Polynesia to Pitcairn, where guests can spend a minimum of 4 and a maximum of 11 days.

More sustainable alternative to a South Sea cruise with the Aranui 5: The Aranui 5 is a uniquely designed ship that combines the functions of a cargo, cruise and mail ship. She offers all the comfort and enjoyment of cruising in the South Seas while fulfilling her important role as a supply vessel. During a 12-day mail voyage from Tahiti to the Marquesas Islands in French Polynesia, the Aranui 5 not only treats its guests to first-class meals and exciting excursions, but also helps reduce the carbon footprint of these voyages by transporting essential cargo to the remote islands.

Useful general pointers for cargo travel:

Cargo Ship Cruises area good way to get from point A to point B on a low CO2 footprint, but time, planning and flexibility are necessary.

Please note that being flexible is a big requirement when you are planning to travel by freighter. The arrival and departure dates are always estimated, because they depend on the actual cargo loaded in the ports, as well as the weather conditions. Up until a week before estimated departure it's unrealistic to give an exact embarkation time. As a rule of thumb, three days of delay per week of travelling are to be accepted.

In a world where almost everything is readily available in the blink on an eye, this demand for flexibility, this little bit of unpredictability, might just be one of the delights of cargo travel, as freighter journeys also do not start daily, but every few weeks or months.

Freighter Travel for everybody

Travelling by freighter offers a good alternative for people with fear of flying. They give an additional spirit to your sabbatical year or help people after a burnout, to get the required peace and quiet break. They are also great for everyone who prefers a more eco-friendly way of travelling, since the cargo ships move their cargo with or without passengers, so there is not much extra CO2 added on per traveler.

Freighter Travel is a peaceful, stress- and almost jet lag free way to reach your faraway destination, finding your centre before reaching the shore.

Exploring the slow side of life with Freighter Travels

Freighter Travel are much more than getting from one point to another. They are offering us one of our most precious values: time. Time to rest, time to escape the stimulus satiation of our everyday life. Time to focus on the work on your thesis, your book, or any other project that is important to you. And Time to let go and just let be.

What is the attraction of the vast horizontal scape of freighter travel? What is the allured depth of the seemingly monotonous landscape of the sea on a Cargo Ship Cruise? The answer is as simple as it is deep: it is the switch from our fast moving daily routine to the unknown calm. Far away from phones and internet, away from time pressure and private commitments you will find a new tranquility. It may sound cheesy, but this stopping process of calming down is one of the first steps of finding your inner calm and balance.

Spending the days watching the horizon and oceanic landscapes creates an intoxicating, meditative feeling of freedom. Standing on deck helps you to let the wind blow all the worries of your daily routine away.

While the rest of the world takes part on the daily game of efficiency, speed and peak performances, freighter travel will give you an authentic feeling of the widenes of the planet. Slowly, destinations will come up and pass by. Travelling like this becomes an inner journey. Far away from everything we can get close to ourselves. Creativity is released and well-being improved.

Everyday life on board

Your well-being will be taken care of on board. Most vessels have their own gym and sauna, some even a swimming pool, and the comfortable cabins are often bigger and more comfortable than on a cruise ship. Most cargo ships only have about 3 - 5 passenger cabins, so it's easy enough to avoid fellow passengers if you want to.

You may spend your time reading or watching movies, sunbathing on deck, meeting for a coffee with another passenger or going to the sauna, to the gym or the swimming pool, if available on your cargo ship journey.

If you´re looking for social interaction, you will find it too. You can spend hours on the bridge and ask the friendly officers to explain the technical equipment, or asking for advice for your next excursion ashore. You may join the sociable cargo ship barbecue parties with the whole crew, which take place every now and then.

Stopover and Shore Leaves

Going ashore is a wonderful change during your freighter travel journey. In most cases the shore leaves will last about 8-12 hours, in some cases even up to 2-3 days, plenty of time for you to explore your surroundings.

Travelling to Europe from Australia: A Comprehensive Guide

Travelling to Europe from Australia can be an exciting experience, with the opportunity to explore new cultures, visit historic landmarks, and indulge in delicious cuisine. However, it can also be a daunting task, as there are many factors to consider, such as flights, visas, accommodation, and transportation. In this comprehensive guide, we will cover everything you need to know to make your European adventure a success.

One of the first things to consider when planning a trip to Europe from Australia is the flight. There are several airlines that offer direct flights from Australia to Europe, including Qantas, Emirates, and Singapore Airlines. However, you can also find indirect flights that can be cheaper but take longer. It's important to compare prices and flight times to find the best option for you.

When booking your flight, consider the time of year you plan to travel. Peak travel season in Europe is during the summer months, from June to August, and flights can be more expensive and crowded during this time. If you are flexible with your travel dates, consider travelling in the shoulder season, from April to May or September to October, when prices are generally lower and crowds are smaller. We also highly recommend pre organising a Europe SIM card for when you land.

Australian citizens do not need a visa to travel to most European countries for tourism purposes for up to 90 days. However, it's important to check the visa requirements for the countries you plan to visit, as some may have different rules and regulations. For example, if you plan to stay in Europe for more than 90 days or work while you're there, you may need to apply for a visa. It's also important to make sure your passport is valid for at least six months after your planned departure date.

Transportation

Once you arrive in Europe, you'll need to decide how you want to get around. Public transportation is generally very good in Europe, so you can easily travel between cities by train or bus. If you're planning to visit multiple countries, you might want to consider purchasing a Eurail pass, which allows you to travel on trains in most European countries. The pass is available in a variety of options, including consecutive days, flexible days, and one-way tickets. It's important to research the options and prices to find the best option for you.

If you prefer to drive, you can rent a car in Europe, but it's important to note that driving rules and regulations may differ from those in Australia. You will need an International Driving Permit, which you can obtain from your local automobile club, and you may need to pay additional fees for insurance and tolls.

Accommodation

When it comes to accommodation, there are plenty of options to choose from. Hotels, hostels, and Airbnb rentals are all popular choices. It's important to research your options and book in advance, especially during peak travel season. Some cities, such as Paris and Rome, have a wide range of accommodation options, but they can be more expensive. Other cities, such as Berlin and Budapest, have a variety of affordable options.

If you're travelling on a budget, consider staying in a hostel or Airbnb rental. Hostels are a great option for solo travellers or those looking to meet other travellers, while Airbnb rentals can provide a more authentic and local experience.

It's important to try local cuisine and visit local markets and restaurants to experience the authentic flavors of each country. However, it's also important to be aware of any dietary restrictions or allergies and to communicate these to restaurant staff.

Safety and Security

While Europe is generally a safe destination for travellers, it's important to take precautions to ensure your safety and security. Keep your valuables, such as your passport and money, in a secure location, and be aware of your surroundings when walking in unfamiliar areas.

It's also important to be aware of scams and pickpocketing. Some common scams include people asking for money or offering to help with your luggage, so it's important to be cautious and avoid giving money or personal information to strangers.

Health and Medical Care

Before travelling to Europe, it's important to ensure you have adequate health insurance coverage. The Australian government recommends taking out comprehensive travel insurance, as medical treatment can be expensive in Europe. It's also a good idea to research the healthcare system in the countries you plan to visit and to carry any necessary medication or medical supplies with you.

It's important to be aware of any health risks, such as food or water-borne illnesses or insect-borne diseases. It's recommended to consult with a healthcare professional before travelling to ensure you have the necessary vaccinations and medications. How to Travel from USA to Europe by Ship

travel from usa to europe by ship or boat, flightless travel

It is possible to travel from the United States to Europe without flying. This guide explains how to travel by ship from the USA to Europe.

For one reason or another, you came here to look for information about crossing the Atlantic from America to Europe. This guide covers three different ship travel options from USA to Europe:

  • Freighter Travel

I’ve previously written about flightless routes from Europe to America , but this guide focuses on the opposite direction. The examples in this post were checked in 2023.

Traveling from the United States to Europe without flying is not always easy. I know some of you will choose to fly anyway because it’s easier. In that case, I ask you to consider donating 10% of your ticket cost to a high-impact climate charity. Carbon offsetting isn’t very effective , so it’s better to support charities suggested by Giving Green instead.

Cruise ship routes from the United States of America to Europe

1. Cruise from the USA to Europe

How can i find a transatlantic cruise from the usa to europe.

Plenty of travel companies offer cruises from the United States to various European destinations. As of now, the website Seascanner listed 108 one-way cruises from the United States to different parts of Europe .

Where do transatlantic cruises to Europe depart from?

Most transatlantic cruises from America to Europe leave from Florida. Fort Lauderdale – a part of the Miami metropolitan area – is the most popular port of departure. New York also serves as a departure point for many cruise ships, and there are even departures from Massachusetts (Boston), New Jersey (Boston), and even Texas (Galveston)!

Which are the most popular ports of entry in Europe?

For transatlantic cruises, Southampton in England, Barcelona in Spain, and Lisbon in Portugal are the top destinations. Other cruises also travel to countries like Germany, Greece, Italy, and the Netherlands.

How much does it cost to travel from the USA to Europe on a cruise ship?

The cheapest cruises from the United States to Europe start at around $1100-1500 for a cabin, including meals. For example, a 7-day voyage from New York to Southampton on the luxury cruise ship Queen Mary 2 start at approximately $1400.

How long does a cruise from the United States to Europe take?

The duration of the journey varies depending on the departure and arrival points. The fastest transatlantic cruises to Europe leave from New York. Cruises from New York to Southampton, England, take around 7 days, while cruises to Hamburg take two days longer.

On the other end of the spectrum, cruises from Florida to Europe generally last about two weeks.

Is traveling on a cruise ship better than flying?

While this guide focuses on flightless travel routes it’s important to note that cruises and ferries may actually produce way more CO2 emissions than commercial flights .

However, there are sustainable ways to cross the Atlantic as well.

Freighter travel from USA to Europe without flying

2. Travel on a Cargo Ship from the USA to Europe

Can you travel from the united states to europe on a cargo ship.

Yes, you can! At least if COVID restrictions allow it.

Compared to cruises, freighter travel is considered nearly CO2 neutral . To book a freighter voyage, you can use specialized travel agencies or contact shipping companies directly, though the latter may be more challenging.

Popular freighter travel companies include Cargo Ship Voyages , Freighter Travel (NZ) , Slowtravel , and Voyages en Cargo . I have personally used Freighter Travel, but I’m sure other companies work just as well.

What about COVID? Does the global pandemic limit freighter voyages?

Unfortunately, yes. At the time of writing (early 2023), many freighter companies around the world were not taking passengers. Some sources expect passenger sailing to resume normally in January/February 2024.

How much does it cost to travel from the USA to Europe on a freighter?

On average, traveling on a cargo ship costs $100-150 per day. A transatlantic journey typically takes around 10-15 days, resulting in a total cost between $1000-3000.

Which are the most popular ports of departure for cargo ship travel from the United States to Europe?

There are plenty! Cargo ships head out to Europe from many harbors on the East Coast. Listed from north to south, these include Boston (Massachusetts), New York, Charleston (South Carolina), Savannah (Georgia), New Orleans (Louisiana), and Houston (Texas).

Where do cargo ship voyages from America to Europe arrive?

Popular destinations in Europe for freighter voyages include Antwerp (Belgium), Cork (Ireland), Le Havre (France), Rotterdam (Netherlands), and Southampton (England). Many ships make multiple stops along the European coast, with Mediterranean cities also being accessible.

How long does it take to travel on a cargo ship from the USA to Europe?

I provide more detailed information about this in my article “ How Long Does It Take to Cross the Atlantic on a Cargo Ship? “. That article also explains why cargo ships venture so slowly.

Here are a few examples with estimated prices for one person:

Flightless travel from the United States to UK, Spain, Portugal

  • This northern route includes a stop in Halifax, Canada, before crossing the Atlantic.
  • At the time of writing, this route wasn’t available, but it was expected to open to passengers in mid-2023.
  • Freighter voyages to the south of Europe are less common, but here’s one example of a southern route.

What else should I know about freighter travel?

Freighter travel offers an intriguing and sustainable way to explore the world. I personally haven’t traveled between America and Europe on a freighter, but I did cross the Pacific on a cargo ship during my 2-year trip around the world .

In summary, the journey was quite uneventful, but I loved it. I passed the time playing games on my laptop, savoring delicious meals, and marveling the waves. My trusty Amazon Kindle Paperwhite e-reader – one of my favorite travel essentials – kept me company.

(The photo above is from that journey.)

To travel on a freighter, you need to meet certain health and age requirements. You should also be quite flexible, as freighters have infrequent schedules. For more information, you can refer to my guide “ How to Prepare for Traveling on a Cargo Ship “.

travel from USA to Europe by boat via Bermuda, Azores

3. Sail from the USA to Europe

Can you travel from the usa to europe by boat.

Yes, traveling from the United States to Europe by boat is possible, although the reverse journey is more common. Also, direct boat travel from the United States to Europe is less prevalent. Starting your voyage from or making a stop in Bermuda is more typical.

Why is crossing the Atlantic from east to west more popular?

The trade winds are to blame. These prevailing winds blow east-to-west near the equator. The prevailing winds make a clockwise loop along the northern Atlantic.

As a result, sailing westward is aided by the wind in a warmer environment. Sailing eastward against the wind entails enduring harsher weather in the north.

I don’t own a boat. Can I still travel from the USA to Europe by boat?

Even if you don’t own a sailboat or a yacht, you can hitch a ride on a boat across the Atlantic. Websites such as Find a Crew and CrewSeekers connect captains with individuals willing to work as crewmates in exchange for the voyage.

Yacht clubs in harbors may also have notice boards for those seeking a boat or a crew. While many captains prefer crewmates with experience, it is not always necessary.

Sailing from US East Coast to Bermuda west to east

Where and when should I depart?

First, you should head to Bermuda, an archipelago about 600 miles (~1000 kilometers) away from the US East Coast. A cruise or a sailing trip from the US to Bermuda typically takes a week or less.

However, traveling to the Caribbean first before continuing to Bermuda might be more convenient. To reach the Caribbean, you can hitch a ride on a sailboat or take a ferry from Florida to the Bahamas .

According to World Cruising Wiki , the best time to sail to Bermuda is in May/June. At that point, the weather is warm but the hurricane season hasn’t reached its peak yet.

How long does it take to sail from the USA to Europe?

Main article: How Long Does It Take to Sail the Atlantic?

According to Life of Sailing , an eastward crossing of the Atlantic takes around 4 weeks. This includes a week of sailing to Bermuda, two weeks or more from Bermuda to the Azores, and another week from the Azores to the coast of Portugal.

The journey from Europe to America tends to be slightly faster.

How can I sail from the US to Europe?

There are numerous comprehensive guides on crossing the Atlantic on a sailboat. I am not even trying to compete with the experts. In this guide, I have provided basic details about the Atlantic crossings. If you wish to explore the topic further, here are a few recommended guides:

Traveling by Ship from USA to Europe

How to travel from USA to Europe by ship? In this guide, I have covered three ways of traveling from America to Europe without flying. The guide is not comprehensive, and I may have missed some good alternatives.

This website, Arimo Travels, is a sustainable travel blog. I launched the site during my predominantly flightless trip around the world . Since completing the journey, I have focused on writing flightless travel guides (along with random generators ) for fellow travelers.

You can find more guides like this one on the Flightless Travel page.

P.S. In this guide, there are times when I call the USA “America”. Personally, I prefer not to use the name of the continent to refer to the country. However, many people hold a different view, and most of my readers come from Google searches.

For that reason, I have used phrases like “travel from America to Europe by ship” throughout the text. Additionally, I have omitted the article “the” from “the USA” for similar reasons.

I was hoping that you would have mentioned something about traveling with pets. I have a cat and a dog which is why I would like to travel by boat and not fly.

Thank you for the feedback Ceitlan, that is a good point!

From what I’ve understood, cargo ships don’t allow pets, and finding a sailing captain willing to take cats and dohs would also be a challenge. In that case, a cruise would be your best option. This site has some information about crossing the Atlantic with pets: https://www.pettraveltransport.com/pettravelbyship.html

Some years ago, a friend of mine wrote a short guide on traveling in Europe with a dog on this site. You can find that guide here: https://arimotravels.com/travel-around-europe-dog/

Travelling to Europe from Australia can be an exciting and rewarding experience, but it's important to plan ahead and be prepared for the journey. From flights and visas to accommodation and transportation, there are many factors to consider. However, with careful planning and research, you can make the most of your European adventure and create memories that will last a lifetime.

Travel to europe.

We’ve had numerous queries regarding travel to Europe due to the crisis in Ukraine. There’s not a ‘one-size-fits-all’ response to whether you should travel to Europe, or any international destination. It's your responsibility to remain informed about all the countries you're visiting. This includes understanding risks, planning for your safety and knowing what to do if travel advice changes. You can do this by subscribing to, and reading, the  travel advice for your destination/s.

The advice on the Smartraveller website remains current for all destinations listed and is under constant review.

If you’re travelling overseas in the next few weeks, contact your airline or travel agent to confirm your bookings. You may need to be prepared for delays and disruptions.

It has never been more important to secure travel insurance than in this current environment. You should always check details of your insurance coverage, particularly how it applies to COVID-19 and travel disruptions. You should also check if your destination requires compulsory insurance cover.

We understand that travel can be confusing at the moment, as rules and requirements are frequently changing. To assist with planning, refer to this information on what has changed for international travel and Australia.

Why adventure cruising on a small ship is the best way to see Australia’s Kimberley region

Small-group adventurer cruises are becoming increasingly popular in the Kimberley’s Broome region because they’re a unique way to experience this remote part of Australia, writes Linda Hanan

Western Australia’s Kimberley coast is famous for its dramatic landscapes and having an abundance of water, and there’s no better way to experience the region than on a cruise. Smaller-vessel adventure-style cruises are becoming increasingly popular as they’re a unique way to experience this remote part of the country. If you’ve been thinking about taking the plunge to discover more about this iconic destination across the water, here’s why you should consider adventure cruising on a smaller vessel.

Small numbers are a highlight of a small cruise

Small group numbers are a highlight of these cruises, with vessels taking between 12 and 36 passengers (depending on the cruise operator). Numbers like these provide a good indication that there’s going to be no crowds to beat while you’re on board or during excursions. Think of it as a more intimate and casual style of cruising compared to being on the more typical larger-style ships. Getting to know fellow passengers and crew quickly is another advantage of travelling with a smaller group, and the interaction between passengers and crew can be likened to travelling with good friends.

Small ships get you to places that larger ships can’t

Kimberley’s staggering 12-metre tides are the second largest in the world, so it’s an area where smaller vessels have a big advantage. These vessels get you where the larger ships can’t as they’re able to cruise rivers and tributaries closer to the mainland. That’s a mighty benefit when you can be surrounded by dramatic scenery while up close and personal with towering ancient cliffs as the vessel glides along secluded rivers. You’ll likely have more time on excursions as well, as you don’t need to be transported for long distances by tenders, which can often be the case with larger ships.

Cruising times and itineraries

The cruising season is brief, running for six months between mid-March and late August to coincide with dry season timing in Australia’s north . If you’re crunched for time, cruises start at six days, although 8-14 days are more popular. The shorter cruises lasting 6-9 days leave from the laid-back resort town of Broome in the Kimberley’s west, or one of the region’s major rivers to the area’s north. These cruises take in some of the region’s highlights and may include a breathtaking light-aircraft flight to experience the Kimberley from the air. The longer 14-day cruises depart from Darwin, Wyndham/Kununurra and Broome (or vice versa). Often referred to as an “ultimate” cruise, the itineraries between Broome and Wyndham/Kununurra (or vice versa) are the best option if you’re looking to spend the maximum possible time on Kimberley waters. Each cruise operator has their own set itinerary, but it’s not uncommon for skippers to change course or have spontaneous stops to get passengers closer to the action.

Adventures everyday

Adventure is the name of the game and cruises of this calibre have it in spades. Unlike a larger ship’s sheer size that prevents it getting close to the mainland, you’re well placed in the thick of things and get right up close on a smaller vessel. And while you can choose your own daily adventures, it’s possible to be off the vessel up to three times a day for a variety of experiences the region is renowned for. Activities include daily visits to gorgeous refreshing waterfalls and swimming in picture-perfect waterholes that very few ever get to witness and are a delight for the senses. While bushwalking to remote historical WWII wrecks or visiting unique 40,000-year-old indigenous art sites that are only accessible by water - guaranteeing they’re visited by very few.

If fishing is your thing, you’ll be completely in your element when cruising the Kimberley coast. This is one of the most popular activities all over Kimberley as the region teems with a vast array of aquatic life. Have you ever wanted to catch a barramundi? These elusive fish are prized all over Australia’s north and grow to more than a metre, with most small vessels having their own secret fishing spots they share with passengers. Your chances really don’t get much better while fishing in the region’s coastal rivers, and you’re well and truly in the box seat to fulfil that dream. And whether you’re a keen fisherman or simply happy to dangle a line, you don’t need to supply anything as all the fishing gear is included. Although the aquatic action doesn’t stop there; seafood doesn’t get much fresher when cruise activities include feasting on cooked mud crabs collected from mangroves and succulent oysters prised off rocks from a secluded island.

Experience the ship’s every luxury by night

After a day of adventure and activities, luxury awaits you back on deck. As the sun begins to dip, being up front on the bow is the place to be. An intimate setting of chatting to new friends with a drink in hand while watching a spectacular Kimberley sunset is something to behold. While passengers are taking in the last of the daylight, the onboard chef prepares gourmet meals (including the delicious seafood caught during the cruise), with meals cooked to an individual’s liking.

And while you may be cruising on a smaller vessel, that certainly doesn’t mean you’re cramped for space. With fewer passengers onboard, there’s plenty of room to relax and retreat in the lounge, on the bow and other deck areas, or from the comfort of your cabin. You can also expect itineraries to be carefully curated, ensuring passengers soak up as much of the dramatic Kimberley coastal and tributary landscape during daylight hours. At times, skippers take advantage of steaming through the night, with passengers waking up so close to towering ancient rich-red sandstone cliffs you feel you could reach out and touch them.

With a growing focus on the environment and sustainable travel practices, the popularity of cruising on these types of vessels will only continue. Choosing the right adventure cruise really comes down to how long you’d like to cruise for, what you’d most like to see and experience, and when you can travel. With all the benefits of small-vessel adventure cruising along with their points of difference, book well in advance to secure your preferences as cruises sell out quickly.

KIMBERLEY, AUSTRALIA

The most direct route for Kiwis to get to Darwin is via Brisbane or Sydney with Air New Zealand, Qantas, and Virgin Australia . Air North and Nexus Airlines offer connecting flights to Broome. Connecting flights are also available to Kununurra where cruise passengers are transferred to Wyndham.
