A study trip to the UK

A study trip to the UK

Listen to Ella talking about some of the most memorable moments from a study trip to the UK.

Do the preparation task first. Then listen to the audio and do the exercises.

Preparation

Audio zone: My life in the UK – preparation

I want to talk about my life in ( the ) UK. I went to study in the UK a few years ago. The most exciting experience is that I went to a host family for my Christmas holiday in December. I went there alone … on a train. It took me about one or two hours to get there, to York, and then I stayed there for one week. This was the first time that I spent time with a UK family, which I learned a lot from them. They treat ( treated ) me like a family member, they took me out to eat, to play and to see all the different interesting culture of their region. On Christmas Day, they even bought me some presents to celebrate the Christmas ( celebrate Christmas ).

When I went back to Oxford, which was the place that I stayed for that year, I had the chance to teach in a Chinese school every Sunday. The kids are ( were ) about 14 years old and I taught them Chinese. They were very cute but they all speak ( spoke ) in English. I spent lots of time to encourage ( encouraging ) them to speak in Cantonese.

During my study ( studies ) in the UK, I lived with ( a ) few other students from different countries. They are very nice and we used to cook on our own, just like a big family. Every day we will go to … every day we went to supermarkets to buy food and drinks and desserts. We cooked every day. I was not a good cook – normally I just put everything into ( the ) oven. And I've tried ( I tried ) to bake a cake before but failed and they all laughed at me. And every time when I bake( d ) a cake, they never taste( d ) it. We share( d ) a flat together – we share( d ) kitchen, bathrooms but we do ( did ) have our own sink and bedroom. The life ( Life ) in the UK is quite relaxing besides study because you can explore more and do different activities at school or even some other extracurricular activities.

After I come ( came ) back ( to ) Hong Kong, I still keep in touch with all my friends in the UK, from different countries like Italy, Malaysia, Japan, UK and other countries. Sometimes we even send email( s ) to each other, sometimes they may come to Hong Kong to visit and we will meet each other again.

I really enjoy ( enjoyed ) the time in the UK. I hope you will also have the chance to explore more in other different countries in the future.

Have you ever studied abroad?

Language level

For me , ihad never studied abroad in a traditional (in-person) way, but nowadays, I have the opportunity to study online with my school.

I never studied abroad before, but I wish I have the chance to get a Bachelor or Master's degree outside my country.

I have never stepped out of my country, but I wish to study at a college in Canada, probably UBC. so for now, I'm working on my English for the day I immigrate and start a new life.

No, I haven't studied abroad. But I plan to do it someday. It's an experience that I looked for to.

Hey , I listen the audio very carefully ,she said i stayed one week in NewYork. In the question , she spent a week in newyork .i tick true but the answer is false ,please any one explain to me??

Hi SAJJAD54321,

Ella is talking about York, which is a city in the UK (not New York, which is in the USA). :)

LearnEnglish team

If I were a high school or university students, I would go to study abroad. Unfortunately, I have never studied abroad for a long time. But I have experienced homestay in the UK, Australia and Singapore. The time I spent there with my host families was memorable and wonderful for me. I still keep in touch with them through SNS. A few years ago, one of the family members came to Japan. We had a chance to see each other again in Tokyo. That was amazing time. We went to a sightseeing around Tokyo and went to a restaurant to enjoy delicious Japanese food.

Yeah, I'm studying electronics in Germany now. I speak german usually because my program is based on German, but, you know, the technology relies on English, so I have to keep my English going.

I moved to USA from Ukraine as an immigrant and of course I've studied at a college. As for me it was a great experience .

No, I wish to do that in the future if I had a chance. I would to study English and Sound engineering.

23 Study Abroad in London Tips: The Ultimate Guide

This post contains affiliate links for which I may make a small commission to help keep the site running. You will not be charged extra for these items had you not clicked the links. Thank you for your help to keep the site running!

Whether you’re still deciding whether or not to study abroad in London (the answer is yes) or you’re already in the capital city navigating your way through the tube and the differences between American English and British English , these study abroad in London tips are everything I think you should know about making the most of your time abroad, particularly if you’re a first time study abroad student.

Studying abroad in London is one of the most popular things to do for American students coming overseas.

And what’s not to love?

You can understand the language (most of the time), it’s one of the most international cities in the world and considered the “gateway to Europe,” and who doesn’t love the Queen? (answer: a lot of British people, but we won’t go into that).

And while this isn’t a study abroad blog, I studied abroad in London from 2012 to 2014, spanning 3 study abroad programs (CAPA, API, and AIFS), as well as a Master’s program at the University of Westminster.

Oh, and I still live here now and work with American students, so you know my London study abroad tips aren’t out of date!

Firstly, no matter your reason for being here, you need the best book on living in the UK for Americans ever written – the book is called “Girl Gone London: An American’s Guide to Surviving Life in the UK” and you should click here and check it out.

uk study trip

I also may have written it, so I’m biased.

But truly, if you’re coming to the UK as an expat, a study abroad student, or even a visitor, my guide to life in the UK contains both personal anecdotes and maybe too-honest experiences, as well as resources and advice on topics ranging from homesickness in the UK (or how not to rage book a flight to America like I did), driving in the UK, being a student in the UK, and more practical advice about bank accounts, buying houses, and more.

It’s truly a one stop shop for all of the weirdness and wonderfulness (is that a word?) that comes along with life in the UK, and also there is plenty of opportunity to laugh at me as I share all of my expat fails so there’s that.

London Parliament and skyline

I find that the tips on studying abroad in London given by many universities is inadequate.

And it’s not their fault, as a lot of the time the people giving the orientation haven’t studied or lived in London themselves.

But stick with me and you’ll know all of the secrets that make studying abroad in London so great.

With that being said, here are 23 tips on studying abroad in London….

Transportation

1. get an oyster card.

uk study trip

If your program doesn’t provide one, make sure that you buy yourself an Oyster card , a blue card that will get you on the tube, London buses, the DLR, and riverboat within the zones it’s valid for.

You can choose between travelcards and pay-as-you-go fares, but whichever way you choose, fares are going to be much cheaper this way than buying individual tickets each time you travel.

Oh, and you’ll look like an actual Londoner so 10/10 for that.

Use your Oyster card to follow a preplanned London itinerary so you don’t even have to think twice about what to do next and can just take it all the sights.

2. Stand on the Right

For the love of all that is good in the world, learn how to get around London and heed the sides in the tube station that say you need to stand on the right, walk on the left when going up and down tube escalators.

This is not a suggestion, but one of London’s most important commandments.

Gloucester Road tube station sign

3. Walk Sometimes

LEGO men walking across Abbey road

It can be really easy to rely on the tube to get you everywhere, but sometimes it’s actually FASTER to walk than to hop from tube to tube, and you’ll get a better idea of the layout of the city that way.

Especially on a nice day (which are more frequent in London in the summer than you may think), use your feet and get to know the city from above ground.

The best way to not get lost in the city when you can’t find your ideal tube is really just by walking.

Walking tours like this one will show you the city so afterwards you can be assured that you know where you are no matter where you end up.

Fly little bird, be free!

4. You Don’t Need to Tap Out on Buses

London buses

Once you get used to using an Oyster card, you’ll know that when riding on the tube, you need to “tap in” with your card and “tap out” when you’re exiting the barrier at your final station.

This isn’t the case for buses, where you just need to tap your card when you get on and not when you get off.

Don’t be the embarrassing person looking to tap out on the bus when the rest of the commuters behind you are getting huffy.

5. Don’t Be Loud

people sitting on tube

One of the first ways that I know American study abroad students are around is because I can hear them.

Especially during commuting hours, when you may be going to your classes, you’ll find that the tube is generally silent, or at least not a rambunctious party.

As Americans, we’re naturally loud anyway, but if you want to fit in, use it as an opportunity to read or listen to music or contemplate your existence rather than loudly chattering away to your friends while everyone else is trying to enjoy the peace!

6. When the Sun Comes Out

London skyline with blue sky

The weather in London CAN be really good at times, but the sight of the sun or a blue sky day is definitely something to celebrate, especially if you’re in London in August or London in September .

Expect the pubs to be full and the parks to be filled with people whenever the sun comes out and it’s even remotely warm.

7. Fast and the Furious (or just the Mildly Annoyed)

people walking down tube escalator

London moves at a fast pace.

If you take a minute, out of the way, to see people walking down the street, you’ll notice that most of them are zooming down the sidewalks, hustling to their next destination.

This isn’t the countryside or a remote village in Timbuktu – it’s a thriving city where you’re always late for a meeting, your train, or a social event.

One of my most essential studying abroad in London tips?

Walk fast and keep up or risk being trampled on!

8. More Reserved

people on London bus

In general, many cities can be more reserved anyway.

People are protecting their personal space in such crowded areas, and if you went around saying hello to everyone you pass, you’d spend your whole day greeting people and not get anything done.

Combine this with the general trend in the south of England that errs more on the side of reserved than outgoing, and you’ll find a city full of amazing people that can be harder to get to now.

You probably won’t be BFFs with the man who serves your coffee every day right away, but if you give it time and make friendly conversation over a longer period, you may just find by the time you leave that you’ve developed a bit of a relationship!

9. Pub Culture

London pub

The pub isn’t just a place to hang out after work.

Oh, no. It’s a way of life.

British social life happens in the pub.

It’s where relationships are formed (and also where they end, I’m sure), it’s where the boss takes her team out to lunch, it’s where you become a “regular” and find a new best friend behind the bar.

Pubs are a gathering place, every day, all day.

Find one you love and really soak up the atmosphere and the relaxed vibe.

If you want a chance to sample as many as possible, may I suggest this Pub Crawl , so you can hit the ground running and see the multitude of pubs that London has to offer!

10. If you’re not complaining, you’re doing it wrong

There is nothing a Londoner dislikes more than someone who thinks everything is amazing all of the time.

You’re supposed to bond about how late the tube is running, how miserable the weather is, how the Royal Wedding meant that you couldn’t go to Windsor Castle last Saturday and how dare Meghan Markle ruin your fun.

Americans have a tendency to be over-the-top positive about everything, but sometimes a Londoner just wants to “moan” (what they call ‘complaining.’)

Don’t go overboard, that’s annoying, but have a bit of fun making new friends by complaining about how the Central Line is hotter than literal hell in the summer.

They’ll love it, I promise!

Things to Do

11. skip the wax museum.

4 london attractions to avoid

For the love of all that is good in the world, please do not spend your time in London in Madame Tusseuds!

Do not be fooled by the line at the door that stretches like 8 miles long.

There are much more historic and cultural things to do than pose with a wax version of David Beckham, I promise!

On that note, here’s a list of some other London attractions to avoid.

12. Spend time in the markets

London’s markets are some of the best places to really soak up life in London and see a LOT at one time.

If you’re a foodie, head to Borough Market right this second and spend hours roaming around the stalls and eating your weight in cheese (unless you’re lactose intolerant like me, in which case, don’t do that).

Borough market

If a bit of grunge is your thing, Camden Market is the perfect place for you.

From cool clothes to records to trinkets that you won’t find anywhere else, its location near Camden lock is also great for an afternoon stroll.

The list of markets goes on and on – Portobello Road Market, Old Spitalfields Market, Brick Lane – to name a few.

13. Save the London Eye until the end, if at all

This might not be a popular suggestion because everybody seems to want to take a spin on the London Eye, but I would seriously advise you to check out my thoughts on if the London Eye is worth it , and then if you decide it is – go at the end of your semester.

Many people go at the beginning of the semester to “take in London,” but in my opinion it all becomes a bit pointless when you’re just continually pointing going, “WHAT’S THAT BUILDING? WHO LIVES THERE? OH MY GOD IS THAT PRINCE HARRY?” (No, that is some random redhead, sorry).

London Eye

If you take a group of friends up with you at the end of your program, it becomes SO much better.

You can point at all of the things you’ve done. “That’s where a bird ate your ice cream!” or “Look at that bench! That’s where we studied for our final together!””

Use it as a chance to reflect and recap your program and the hefty price tag becomes easier to deal with.

You can follow this link to book a trip to to the London Eye in advance.

14. Don’t miss the free museums

Interior of British Museum

London is filled with free museums, which is fantastic for students studying abroad in London on a budget because who has money to continue to splash the cash on London landmarks, am I right?

My favorite London free museum is the Museum of Natural History in Kensington, but another top contender is the Science Museum (also in Kensington).

These aren’t small museums, either.

You could literally spend a whole day in them if you’re really into seeing everything.

Other free museums include the Victoria and Albert Museum and the British Museum .

15. Do something active

A lady in red running in Hyde Park with walkers in front of her

Take a pedal boat out onto the Serpentine Lake in Hyde Park.

Go for a bike ride, using a rented bike, through any of the major parks (please do not use these out on the roads for your own safety and the safety of those around you – seriously, Americans and riding bikes in London do not mix).

Go for a long walk along the Thames to see how many landmarks you can spot.

Not only will this keep you working off some of the extra pounds you might be putting on, but it’s a great way to see the city in a way you wouldn’t ordinarily.

If the biking route appeals to you, try a tour like this one that takes out around to all the top sites.

British English

16. “you okay”.

Ready for a revolutionary London study abroad tip?

The phrase, “You okay?” DOES NOT mean “You look like something is wrong with you, are you okay?”

It’s just a greeting – someone saying hi. This catches me off guard all the time, and I’ve lived here for five years.

You should reply something like, “Good, you?” or you can ask it back.

Or just do what all the Americans in the UK do and flounder and say, “Yes, I’m fine! Why? Do I look like something’s wrong?!”

17. Pants versus Pants

So, I’m just going to throw it out there as probably my top study abroad in London tip and something nobody tells you about London – the word for underwear here is “pants,” and the word for pants is “trousers.”

So if you compliment someone on their pants, they’re going to think you mean underwear until they twig that you’re American and then they’ll sort of laugh at you and it’s just all around awkward.

18. Can you get me a plaster?

Band-aid is a brand name, which means that the Brits don’t have Band-aids, they have “plasters.”

Which is a generic name for what we call Band-aids.

If you need a Band-aid, make sure to ask for a plaster, and if someone asks YOU for a plaster, they’re not trying to do some craft project they found on Pinterest – they need a Band-aid.

19. “Top of the morning to you!”

I feel like all Americans think Brits greet each other with a “Top of the morning to you” while they flip their top hat.

They don’t.

20. “Throw it in the bin.”

Brits don’t use the word, “garbage can,” (or garbage for that matter).

A garbage can is called a “bin,” so if someone tells you to throw something in the bin, they don’t just mean any bin, they mean the garbage can.

Also, “rubbish” is the term for garbage.

I still don’t say “rubbish” as it all feels a bit fake, and we’ve got to draw the line somewhere.

What to Eat

21. sunday roast.

Sunday Roast on a plate

A Sunday roast is an essential part of everyone’s weekend, especially when you’re a study abroad student in London.

Usually it involves some sort of meat (chicken, beef or pork) with roasted potatoes, vegetables like carrots and swede (check out my post on understanding a British supermarket to find out what swede is in America), Yorkshire pudding, and gravy.

They say it’s kind of like having Thanksgiving every Sunday, which I would disagree with because it misses many elements of a true Thanksgiving, but it’s a time when families usually get together and friends use it as an excuse for a catch-up, so take advantage of it.

Most pubs do Sunday roasts, or you could get creative and try to make your own.

22. Fish and Chips are Non-Negotiable

Fish and chips on a table

If you’re in the UK, you’ve got to have fish and chips.

I don’t even really like fish and yet I like fish and chips.

Oh, and chips means fries, not actual chips, which makes it even better because who actually prefers chips to fries?

Unbelievable enough, we do have other cuisine here too though.

This tour takes you to the secret food spots of London that often get overlooked by tourists but are essential for the city dwellers.

23. Pudding is Never Pudding

Dessert with brownie and ice cream

So, “pudding” in British English doesn’t mean “pudding” like we think of it – it means dessert.

So pudding is a pudding, but pudding doesn’t necessarily mean pudding.

Everything You Need to Know About Studying in the UK

If you’re interested in studying abroad in the UK, check out this breakdown of how you can make it possible!

Are you considering studying outside of Canada? Studying abroad in the United Kingdom may be the best choice you make for yourself and your education. But there’s so much to consider, where do you even begin? Don’t worry, here’s a  crash course on everything you need to know about studying in the UK  — from your initial research to the application process. So, let’s start off with why you should consider studying in the UK:

Top benefits of studying in the UK

On top of gaining independence and developing essential soft skills, like adaptability, there are many benefits to choosing to pursue your degree across the pond. Check out the  advantages of studying overseas in the UK :

  • The UK has some of the top schools in the world ! Four out of the top 10 schools in  QS’ world university rankings for 2023  are UK schools
  • It’s incredibly  easy to travel within the UK and Europe  as well. The UK is near countries like France, Belgium, and the Netherlands, so you can explore more of the world while you study
  • Settle in with little to no culture shock  (except for driving on the other side of the road and terminology like chips=fries and trousers=pants)
  • There’s lots to do for students . You can get a tase for pub life, explore museums, festivals, castles, cliffsides, and more
  • Degrees are typically shorter  which means less money spent on tuition! An undergraduate degree typically lasts about three years
  • Simple student visa process  (you’ll learn more about that below!)
  • UK degrees are recognized internationally , thus opening up your career options
  • You can  work while studying  (a maximum of 20 hours a week during your terms, and full-time during breaks and holidays)
  • You can  work in the UK after graduation . The  Graduate visa  will allow you to work in the UK for two years after completing your degree

Application process

So, the UK has won you over and you want to pursue your studies there. Here’s where you can find out  what you can expect from the application process .

How to apply to schools in the UK

Applying for schools in the UK is a lot like applying for schools in Canada. You have  two options for submitting your applications :

  • Apply to your desired school directly
  • Apply through UCAS.com

The  Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS) , connects the world to UK higher education. It’s similar to provinces in Canada that have a province-wide application system, like OUAC or ApplyAlberta. You’ll need to pay an  application fee of €27 ($40.42 CAD)  for a maximum of six university choices.

Make sure you know if your desired school is a  licensed student sponsor , so it can legally accommodate international students. A licensed student sponsor is a  school registered with the government and can enroll international students . This is an important factor that will pop up again when you apply for a student visa.

Some  important deadlines  that you should be aware of are:

  • October  — deadline for any course at the universities of Oxford and Cambridge, or for most courses in medicine, veterinary medicine/science, and dentistry
  • January  — deadline for the majority of courses

If it’s after June 30 and you’ve missed those deadlines, or don’t have an offer from a university or college, you can submit your application and be entered into Clearing.  What is Clearing?  Basically, Clearing is  a way to place students in open seats in programs after the deadline .

Personal statements and other documents

When applying to schools in the UK, you’ll often need to submit your  personal information, secondary education information, written references, and a personal statement .

Your personal statement is your time to shine and stand out from the crowd. This is when you’ll be able to  highlight your passions, interests, and experiences apart from your grades . But, this can be a daunting task. How are you supposed to convince an admissions team to choose you? Here are some great tips to help you get started:

  • Preparation is important : before you begin writing, jot down key details and facts that you want the admissions team to know about you, so you don’t leave anything out
  • Show your personality : admissions teams don’t want to read something bland. They want to get to know more about who you are as a person, so make sure to include your personality in your writing
  • Open your statement with an attention grabber : admissions teams will read thousands of applications and you want to hook them from the beginning
  • Avoid clichés : they’re overdone and work against showing your personality
  • Be clear and concise : get straight to the point. You don’t have a lot of space to work with, so don’t waste your time elaborating on unnecessary details
  • Provide evidence : when discussing your skills and achievements, include evidence to back up your claims
  • Be memorable : try to include something unique and noteworthy about yourself or something you’ve done. Give the admissions team a reason to read your application more than once

For  more advice on writing your best personal statement , check out UCAS’  How to Write Your Undergraduate Personal Statement  article.

Getting your visa

Once you’ve been accepted to a school, you can then  apply for a student visa ! The  earliest you can apply for your visa is six months before you course begins , but don’t worry, you’ll usually  receive a decision within three weeks .

As for the visa application process, it’s fairly simple.  You’ll need the following to be eligible :

  • To pay a  fee of €363 (approx. $542 CAD) , as well as a healthcare surcharge
  • To be able to  pay for your course for one academic year  (nine months)
  • You’ll receive this from your school when you’re accepted
  • To be able to  speak, read, write, and understand English
  • Must have  consent from your parents or guardians if you’re under 18  — you’ll need a copy of your birth certificate (or similar government documents) showing their names, too
  • Must have a  current passport  or other valid travel documentation
  • If you’ve received sponsorship (pdf — see pg. 5)  for your course fees and living costs in the last 12 months, you’ll also need  written consent for your application from your financial sponsor
  • If you’re doing graduate school, you  may need to apply for the  Academic Technology Approval Scheme certificate , depending on your course

Russell Group schools

In your quest for applying to schools in the UK, you’ve probably come across the term “Russell Group.” But,  what exactly is the Russell Group and what does it have to do with education ?

The Russell Group is the equivalent to the top universities in Canada and the Ivy League in the US . There are 24 schools that are part of the Russell Group, and they all share a  common focus on research and a positive reputation for academic achievement . According to THE’s  World University Rankings 2023 , 10 Russell Group schools made it into the top 100, with three placing in the top 10! If this sounds like what you’re looking for in a school, be sure to explore the  full list of Russell Group schools .

Scholarships and funding for schools in the UK

As a Canadian studying in the UK, you can  expect your tuition fees to be higher, as you’ll be an international student . One of the best ways to help make your education more affordable is through scholarships and other funding opportunities.

Did you know that  many universities in the UK will accept financial aid through your provincial or federal government ? For example,  OSAP  and  StudentAidBC  offer a search portal you can use to see if your interested school in the UK is registered for financial aid.

As for scholarships, here are the  best places to search for awards and funding :

  • Your interested school’s financial awards page for entrance scholarships and other awards
  • ScholarshipsCanada.com
  • ScholarshipsPortal.com
  • Canadian Centennial Scholarship Fund  (postgraduate programs)

That’s a lot of information to take in, but with a little help from SchoolFinder and ScholarshipsCanada,  you’ll be on your way to studying in the UK sooner than you think !

To get the most value out of this important event, you should prepare for it in advance if possible, and follow up afterwards. Here are some tips on how to make the best use of your time at the Study and Go Abroad university fairs:

Before the fair:

  • See which institutions are attending by viewing the  exhibitor list
  • Read the profiles of the institutions that are of direct interest to you; also have a look at the other profiles as well – you may be surprised which university or college offers what you are looking for
  • If you are not sure of what study topic you want to pursue, start with the countries you want to study in; you can sort by country on the  exhibitor listing  (use arrow toggle over ‘country’) and see which schools are located in which countries and explore from there
  • Visit  www.studyandgoabroad.com and find out more about the various countries – you will find country facts and figures under the ‘Study Overseas’ drop down menu – and read up on some articles about student experiences, fields of study, etc.
  • If you already know what you are looking for, bring along your transcripts, portfolio, résumé – whatever you have already on hand to present to the representatives. If you don’t have them, that is okay as well – you will find out what you need once you discuss your plans

During the fair:

  • Use the Fair Guide you will get when you enter to navigate your way around the room
  • Attend the free  seminars : These information sessions are for you to learn in depth about the presentation topics and to ask questions; visit the presenters afterwards at their stands for more details
  • Ask as many questions as you need to; the fair is for you to research and learn about the many institutions in attendance
  • Collect information resource materials from the schools that are of interest to you and from the other service providers
  • Don’t rush through: It is not often that you will have the chance to visit with so many representatives in your city, so take your time!

After the fair:

  • Follow up with representatives you met and keep in touch with questions and planning
  • Read through the materials you collected during the fair
  • Make up a comparison chart of important issues that you extract from the various brochures and websites of different schools of interest to you, to help you with your decisions
  • Discuss your ideas and plans with friends and family; this often helps to clarify issues

Virtual Tours of the UK - The New Study Trip

Written by: TEFL Toolkit

April 28, 2021

Time to read 4 min

If taking your students on a UK study trip is still out of the question, whether due to COVID or the rising travel costs, then this handy resource is for you! Take your students on a tour around the UK visiting some famous landmarks all from the comfort of your classroom.

British Museum

The British Museum is unique in bringing together under one roof the cultures of the world, spanning continents and oceans. Their Museum of the World, History Connected tour allows you to explore Africa, America, Asia, Europe, and Oceania through the ages. You can choose between several topics and listen to their audio guide on each. A great historic tour to take your students on.

Buckingham Palace

Buckingham Palace has served as the official London residence of the UK’s sovereigns since 1837 and today is the administrative headquarters of the Monarch. The virtual tours explore rooms in the Palace such as the Throne Room and the Grand Staircase. With information icons popping up as you move around the rooms, you can find out in detail about different areas and their significance. A great way for students to see some British Culture and learn about the Monarchy

Canterbury Cathedral

A first-person view walking tour of the Canterbury Cathedral in Kent, England. This is a complete tour inside the oldest and most famous Christian structures in England. It remains one of the most visited places in the country.

Dover Castle

Dover Castle is known as the ‘key to England’ after defending the realm for over nine centuries. Take their 4-minute tour with audio commentary to gain an insight into all the major areas of the Castle and its grounds along with a brief overview of the history. Although experiencing the underground war bunkers with all their smells and sounds may not be possible, the video is a good introduction to the history and stories of the Castle, all of which can be found on the English Heritage website here.

Houses of Parliament

The role of Parliament is not always a well-known one. There is a common misconception that either the Queen or the Prime Minister has sovereignty in the UK, but Parliament holds this power making their role in the governing of the UK the most significant. The tour itself allows you to look around the Houses and see where discussions and votes will take place. Along the way, there are information points offering insight into some of the history of the building and its relevance. If nothing else, it is worth a look at for the architecture, the mosaic depictions of some Patron Saints, and the tiles on the floor, yes really!

London 360 Tour

This tour is more of an overview of London, which could be a useful introduction for your learners. Starting with a view from the London Eye, you can go on to explore some of the main landmarks such as St Paul’s Cathedral, HMS Belfast, and iconic destinations such as Piccadilly Circus and Trafalgar Square. There is a brief information box on each landmark, but these also link to pages giving you in-depth information about the individual landmarks.

Natural History Museum

This museum is usually a popular destination for any trip to London. The virtual tour offers 14 different ways to experience the museum, from exploring it as a whole or allowing you to focus on certain areas such as the Hintze Hall with the legendary Sir David Attenborough as your tour guide. This allows you to experience each area in depth without trying to squeeze it all into one lesson.

Royal Pavilion - Brighton

The Royal Pavilion in Brighton is an iconic landmark. On this virtual tour, you can look around a few rooms such as the Banqueting Room and the Red Drawing Room which are not usually available to tour in person. There are also accompanying audio guides, all of which are available in a few different languages if required. The extravagant décor and architecture are a must-see.

Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre

This open-aired theatre set in the heart of London is one of a kind. The tour allows you to explore the theatre, watch some footage of plays being performed, and learn about its history. Having visited there myself, and stood through a 3-hour play, I can assure you, visiting it through a screen will be just as, if not more enjoyable than taking a trip there whilst avoiding all the leg and neck pain. How people used to enjoy a play like this I do not know! It is possible to watch some previous productions though and it’s worth checking out their teaching resources page here .

This well-known prehistoric monument is set in Salisbury Plain in Wiltshire. The virtual tour lets you take an up-close look around with information points, either written or video, available in various areas. It is also worth exploring the website for an in-depth history of the landmark, its significance, and what exactly it is.

The Mary Rose – Portsmouth

The history of the Mary Rose is bound to pique your learner’s interest. Starting with the Tudor history behind the ship, before exploring its significance and the continued conservation efforts, the tour is truly remarkable. You can also discuss some of the theories as to why the Mary Rose sank in the first place and experience original footage and photos of it being raised from the seabed. The website is a hub of information with some bonus activities included.

Westminster Abbey

Westminster Abbey may be best known for it’s Coronations, burials and Royal weddings, the most recent being the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge in 2011. On this tour, you can view treasures including the Shrine of St Edward the Confessor, the Grave of the Unknown Warrior, the High Altar and the Coronation Chair in unprecedented detail. The upcoming coronation of King Charles III will take place here.

This is in no way an exhaustive list, but we hope it offers you, and your students a chance to experience a small piece of the UK and its history. There are many more virtual tours out there, not just in the UK but worldwide offering views we may never have had the chance to see without the Pandemic. We are all adapting, so let’s embrace what we have and take our learners on a tour of the world!

How Study Abroad Agents can Help Prepare you for your UK Study Trip

Moving abroad to study in a foreign country is a huge decision, and it is often a life-changing experience for the student. There is something really incredible and special about moving on your own to another country, to experience the culture and lifestyle first-hand. It will allow you to have new independence, and it’ll also be a time in your life you always remember.

For many international students, they choose London because it’s a city they have always dreamt of living in, and it’s not hard to see why London would be someone’s first choice. London has multiple colleges, schools and universities, and it is a vibrant, bustling, friendly city where entertainment, culture and history can be experienced around every corner. It’s a wonderful place to live – so applying for courses and school can be competitive and confusing.

How Study Abroad Agents Can Help

The journey to being accepted onto your ideal course and ensuring the whole process runs smoothly, is something you might want a little help with. But don’t worry, that’s what this article will help you understand, and will give you key ideas and insight into ensuring your study experience goes seamlessly.

Finding Study Agents in your Home Country

If studying in London has been a lifelong dream for you, and you’re looking to begin making it happen – one of your first steps should be finding an educational agent, or (as they’re also known) a study agent in your home country.

A study agent is someone who will help you locate the right course for you and ensure you have all the qualifications or experience to get accepted onto said course. They can help manage your entire application journey – making things much less stressful or time consuming for you, and ensuring you’ve maximise your chances of getting accepted.

The best way to find a study agent is to look online. Many countries have their own educational travel associations that the study agents belong to. Usually it is the most reputable agents that are linked to such associations. For example, BELTA is the “Brazilian Educational & Language Travel Association”. If you are a student from Brazil, and you want to identify a reputable Brazilian study agent, then BELTA is a great place to start. Another reputable association is FELCA. FELCA describes itself as a “federation of language and education consultant associations from all over the world”.

If you already know which UK school or university you wish to study at, then another option is to contact them directly to ask for recommendations on study agencies in your home country. Many educational institutions have “preferred partner” or “affiliate” relationships with study agents from all over the world. So, if you are a student from Japan for example, and you know that you want to study Economics at London’s UCL, then contact UCL directly. Ask them to recommend and put you in touch with their affiliated (or preferred) educational agents in Japan.

Of course, if you have friends or peers that can recommend a reputable study agent, then this is also a great way to get started. Maybe post on Facebook or LinkedIn and ask for recommendations. You never know which of your contacts might be able to suggest a good study agent in your home country.

What to Consider When Looking for a Study Agent

Choosing the right study agent could be a big factor in your own study experience, as it could affect the course or the school you get accepted into.

It’s important to remember, some study agents will have existing relationships with certain schools, universities or colleges – so you may stand slightly more chance of being accepted for courses / spaces if this is the case.

If your chosen study agent has experience with certain schools or universities – they probably know the application process very well – which again, puts you at an advantage and means the process may be slightly quicker or more efficient.

You may not have a particular school or university in mind at all (which is normal and completely fine!) so in these cases, you’ll want to make sure your chosen study agent has plenty of local knowledge and can recommend the best courses or schools for your field of interest / skillset.

Once you’ve Found a Study Agent… Then What?

Then the exciting stuff begins, and you get to start planning your future. Depending on how involved your study agent is, will depend on what happens next.

If you have your heart set on a specific course and a specific school, your study agent will work with you to make your application as good as possible and as tailored as possible to that course’s and that school’s specific requirements. They may also research and present to you some alternative courses and schools as a back-up plan, that are similar to your initial choice.

If however, you’re a little more flexible around course, subject and school – your study agent will most likely have a few questions for you – all so they can begin finding some fantastic choices for you to look at. They’ll probably present you with several options and choices, and you’ll then be able to pick the ones you want to apply for, with their help and assistance.

The key here is to listen to their advice and trust their experience in the education system. The end goal of a good study agent is always to place you in the best placement suited to you.

Your Study Agent Might Offer Other Recommendations Too

Your study agent isn’t just there for course and school applications. Many of them will give you advice on wider topics too – and will help make the entire process of studying abroad easier for you.

London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine

Inequities in geographical accessibility to emergency obstetric care facilities exist in urban areas.

Quote card for Aduragbemi Banke-Thomas

In a study led by researchers at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) in collaboration with Google Health, geographical accessibility to emergency obstetric care facilities in the 15 most populated Nigerian cities was assessed. The study utilised a unique dataset of travel time data from Google Maps’ internal Directions API, that was jointly developed with Google Health. This study allowed for the element of choice by looking at travel time to the nearest, second nearest and third nearest functional public and private facilities across eight travel time scenarios, spanning peak and non-peak hours on weekdays and weekends.

The study, published in Lancet Global Health , found that women across 15 cities in Nigeria are within 45 minutes of the nearest public emergency obstetric care facility, although day of the week and time of day, as well as where facilities are located across cities, can significantly impact how long it takes women to get to the facility they need.

Women living in urban areas are thought to have an ‘urban advantage,’ with the idea that they have easier access to more emergency obstetric care facilities. However, in reality, women living in these areas often face complex challenges when travelling, such as poor road infrastructure and traffic congestion, leading to delays in accessing facilities and care. Understanding the barriers these women face could support better decisions in planning facilities and travel route provisions.

While most women could travel to an emergency obstetric care facility within 45 minutes, the distance a woman could travel varied with traffic congestion. The distance was generally lower during weekdays between 6:00pm and 8:00pm and highest during weekends between 1:00am and 3:00am.

Their analysis also showed that the choice of facility women could travel to was limited by time. In several cities, some women could not reach more than one emergency obstetric care facility within an hour, especially if they were limited to using only public facilities.

Similarly, facility distribution within individual cities also revealed inequalities. Some cities had an even distribution of facilities across the city, such as in Maiduguri, while others had clusters in the centre, for example in Kaduna. This study identified that informal settlements in particular, had the poorest accessibility to facilities, an important understanding as one third or Africa’s urban population currently live in informal settlements.

This analysis provides travel time data that more accurately reflects lived experiences in urban areas than previous studies that used models to assess travel times. The evidence generated shows not only where the inequalities in accessing facilities exist, but also when they are worse. This level of detail can provide accurate and realistic data to inform and better support service planning and has significant policy implications, such as supporting efforts for universal health coverage.

“I am immensely proud of this ground-breaking research that offers a paradigm shift in how we assess geographical accessibility to critical services such as emergency obstetric care. The more we can identify specific gap areas in geographical accessibility, the better positioned service planners and policymakers will be to target interventions. In future, layering these more realistic estimates of travel time on other spatially represented data will help refine evidence that informs benchmarks of travel time to care.”

The study was funded by Google through a grant awarded to Aduragbemi Banke-Thomas, who is Principal Investigator of the On Tackling In transit delays for Mothers in Emergency (OnTIME) Consortium.
