“Some travel posters show you what you’ll see,” said Nicholas D. Lowry, president and principal auctioneer at Swann Galleries in Manhattan. “Others show you what you’ll feel or present you with a fantasy of who you’d like to be.”

Case in point: an Australian poster from 1935 that sold for $1,250 this month as part of Swann’s 14th annual Rare & Important Travel Posters auction. “To the Seaside by Train,” the poster’s headline advises. But the poster — commissioned by Victorian Railways and produced by Gert Sellheim, an acclaimed designer, and a collaborator identified only as Phelan — doesn’t depict a seaside or a train. Nor does it feature any element that suggests “Australia” in any way.

Instead, the poster is built around an illustration of a man and a woman in white, form-flaunting bathing suits. They look as if they’ve just emerged from a spray-tan booth set to “Boehner.” Their toned limbs and radiant smiles are so vital and incandescent, they overwhelm the rest of the universe. As the couple clasps hands and sprints toward modernity, a touch of blue drop shadow and blank white oblivion is all they leave in their wake.

Travel, the poster suggests, isn’t about going to some physical place. It’s about achieving an emotional state. More specifically, it’s about projecting glamour — tilting one’s chin in the most photogenic way at exactly the right moment. At the bottom of the poster, as a result of a cooperative advertising agreement, there’s a final bit of text, a travel tip that will guide humanity on its tour through the rest of the century. “Take a Kodak,” it says.

Today, vintage travel posters are sold as art. In June, Christie’s held an auction called the Art of Travel, in London. “L’Atlantique,” a 1931 poster by A. M. Cassandre that portrays the bow of an ocean liner in a highly stylized Art Deco manner, brought $50,880.

In the recent Swann auction, 81 percent of the lots sold, with the highest price, $20,000, paid for a 1932 poster by the commercial artist Philip Zec called “By Night Train to Scotland.” Several other posters went for more than double the high end of their previously estimated values.

The current appetite for travel posters is so strong that Swann will be holding another auction devoted exclusively to them, Travel Posters From the Julius Paul Collection, on Dec. 17. And Christie’s is planning two auctions that will feature them as well — Vintage Posters, on Nov. 13 (which will include Stalin-era Soviet travel posters), and the Ski Sale, on Jan. 22.

Before they were art, though, travel posters were ads. And what they were most often selling was not the idea that travel could broaden your horizons. Or reacquaint you with the land of your forefathers. Or allow you to experience historic places firsthand. They were selling the glamour of travel.

Art-oriented advertising posters first gained popularity in France in the late 1800s, and some of the earliest adopters of the form were railways. “Railways were like the Internet then,” Mr. Lowry said. “They were connecting the world, brand-new technology. And posters became a way for companies to sell seats in their trains. If you walked into a Paris train station, you’d see pictures of the French Alps or the French Riviera. You’d be like, ‘Wow, I’m a poor schlub in Paris, but for 20 francs, I can get away with my family.’ ”

By the 1930s, travel had become a big business. From 500,000 to 600,000 American travelers were visiting Europe each year, and they were spending approximately $1 billion in 1930 dollars, more than $14 billion today, to do so. Railways, steamship lines, airlines and even the occasional Zeppelin all competed for this money. A poster in the recent Swann auction depicts the Hindenburg in 1936 — a year before its fiery demise — with swastikas decorating its tail fins, cruising through a cloudy Manhattan sky. It sold for $15,360, well over its estimated range of $4,000 to $6,000.

In many instances, these companies emphasized their own specific approaches to transportation in their posters — building their pitches around heroic close-ups of hulls, wings, propellers. But to whatever extent such imagery captures the technologies underlying these Machine Age marvels that were collapsing time and space, they were engineered mainly to evoke an emotional response.

“They’re celebrating the majesty and grandeur of travel,” said Bret Marcus, a Los Angeles TV executive who has about 50 travel posters in his collection, including five Cassandres that are primarily studies of ocean liner smokestacks. “They’re beautiful,” he said, “and they have this overpowering sense that if you’re on one of these ships, you’re doing something that’s never been done before.”

Advertising posters were printed on cheap paper, in multiples, and it’s often unknown exactly how many copies of any one were produced. “These were not works of fine art, so no one kept track,” Mr. Lowry said. In the 1970s and 1980s, however, an increasing number of collectors, attracted by the Art Nouveau virtuosity on display in these images and by their relative affordability, began to acquire them more assiduously.

Still, Mr. Lowry explained, travel posters failed to immediately benefit from this new cachet. While the appeal of advertising posters has always been rooted in their status as egalitarian street art — the spectacle of beautiful imagery being put into the service of hawking car tires and cleaning powder — travel posters apparently crossed some meridian of good taste. “My intuition is that people considered them too ubiquitous to be rare or worthwhile,” Mr. Lowry said.

In time, however, their glamour trumped their ubiquity. And, if anything, that glamour is becoming only more resonant. While many of the posters that ignited interest in the genre focus on modes of transportation, another subset places the traveler front and center.

Forget heroic smokestacks: In the early decades of the 20th century, when breakthrough technologies were making travel increasingly affordable to the masses, travel posters were casting it as a realm of aristocratic leisure. In dozens of posters from the recent Swann auction, elegant women and men occupy the foreground, emphatically upstaging seaside cabanas and other artifacts of the local terrain with their stylish apparel and thin limbs.

In such imagery, travel is depicted not as a mode of education and discovery, or even a mode of recreation. It’s a mode of display. “These posters were telling you how you should live your life,” Mr. Lowry said. And how to present it, in the most advantageous settings, angles and light. In the average travel poster from the 1930s, everyone looks more than ready for a selfie.

So it’s no surprise that the Ritz-Carlton has just updated its smartphone app with a feature that lets users create their own vintage-style posters by applying destination titles, stamps and other effects to the snapshots they take on their trips. It’s a clever idea. Yet in its efforts to promote the app, the Ritz omits travelers from a series of sample posters, which depict only buildings and local color. That’s an omission no Instagram user is likely to make, thanks to the instructive power of early-20th-century travel posters and all they set in motion.

What Nearly 300 Vintage Posters Say About the Future of Travel

Dawit Habtemariam

Dawit Habtemariam , Skift

November 8th, 2023 at 10:14 AM EST

These nearly 300 vintage travel posters tell us companies will always chase the middle class and destinations will always win over tourists with their oldest sightseeing attractions.

Dawit Habtemariam

In 50 years, tourists will visit the same famous attractions they went to a century before. Companies will invest in marketing for countries where there’s a rising middle class and access. Those are two patterns I noticed when I explored a collection of nearly 300 vintage travel posters at New York City’s Swann Auction Galleries .

Nicholas D. Lowry, the director, gave me a tour of the collection in advance of an auction Thursday. Some of the posters go back as late as the 1890s. Many are valued at over a $1,000 – the most expensive is a travel promotion for Atlantic City valued between $10,000 and $15,000.

Australia, Italy, Scotland, Canada, Poland, Egypt, India and other countries are represented. The posters were paid for by airlines, railroad companies, cruise lines, hotels, tourism bureaus and at least one tour operator. Many of the businesses like Pan Am and TWA are long gone, while others like Air India, United Airlines, and Air France are going strong.

Travel Marketers Follow the Middle Class

Travel companies targeted the new middle classes of the West. “They are all dealing [with] the middle class. The upper classes didn’t need to be advertised to,” said Lowry. “It’s like, if you can afford a Rolls Royce, you don’t need to see an ad to be like ‘I need a Royal Royce.’”

After the industrial revolution, this class expanded and had more money to spend on travel. More destinations became easier to reach.

vintage travel posters auction

We are seeing this pattern today with companies targeting emerging outbound markets like India . The country’s middle class is expanding and airlines are adding nonstop flights and weekly service to new international destinations.

The U.S. tourism industry is chasing the Indian traveler. “Where we’re looking to grow is India, it has so much opportunity and potential,” said Fred Dixon, CEO and president of NYC Tourism + Conventions . “Air connectivity was always a concern with India, one of the things that was holding us back, and now we think that’s going to accelerate in the years to come.”

‘Touristy ‘ Attractions Will Dominate the Public Imagination

Designers made the posters be colorful enough to “catch your eye quickly as you walk by and impart the message right away” on the street or a train platform, said Lowry.

Many companies simply advertised a destination’s world-renowned attractions: Egypt’s ancient statues, India’s Taj Mahal, Australia’s kangaroos, and New York City’s Statue of Liberty and Times Square.

vintage travel posters auction

Companies promoted famous attractions even if they didn’t travel to them. A Greek rail company advertised the famous Temple of Poseidon even though it didn’t stop there. “This is basically what Greece is,” said Lowry. “We’re a railroad company, we’re showing Greece, but you’ll have to take a bus.”

Those designed by George Hamel (Geo Ham) are particularly popular, combining bucket-loads of Art Deco styling with views of classic pre-war vehicles racing on the riviera.

George Hamel (1900-72), the Prince of Speed, was on the top of his game when these two posters were produced. Having received the first of many commissions from French car magazine Omnia and the weekly L’Illustration in 1920, he was quickly engaged by race organisers and car marques to produce artwork for the Machine Age.

He lived and breathed his subject matter: inspired to take up painting after watching a motor race in his hometown of Laval in 1913, he was himself an amateur racer and mechanic. He co-drove a 2-litre V8 Derby L8 at Le Mans in 1934 and owned a Bugatti Type 40.

Hamel’s pastel-hued design for the 1934 Monaco Grand Prix was commissioned by race organisers Association Internationale des Automobile Clubs Reconnus (AIACR) and printed by Monegasque of Monte-Carlo.

Although he chose as his subject the gentleman racer Lord Howe (the 5th Earl Howe, Francis Richard Henry Penn Curzon) pulling ahead in his Maserati, the April 2 race was dominated by the successes of the Alfa Romeo team.

The Algerian Guy Moll took the chequered flag aged 23 years and 10 months old and remained the youngest driver to have won a Monaco GP until Lewis Hamilton (aged 23 years and 4 months) in 2008.

The 1935 poster, that depicts a shining aluminium Mercedes-Benz W25 out front, proved more prophetic. A tight race on April 22 was dominated by Mercedes and Alfa-Romeo, with Luigi Fagioli – the Abuzzi Robber - taking the flag in his W25B just over 31 seconds ahead of René Dreyfus in his Alfa-Romeo P3.

Several original copies of both posters have sold in recent years, with most passing the $20,000 mark.

Around the World in Vintage Posters

In an era in which armchair traveling has become the new normal, it has never been more engaging to stay at home and travel the world virtually through the glorious designs of historical travel posters. Unintentionally, though poignantly, our Rare & Important Travel Posters auction this fall can certainly be described as celebrating “America the Beautiful” as the number of posters relating to American travel is more concentrated than usual, all luring travelers to the mountains and coastlines, cities, vistas, destinations, National Parks, monuments and events of historical significance around the United States.

Collecting & Appreciating Train Posters

An informal talk with railroad historian michael zega & swann president nicholas d. lowry, happening october 12 at 7pm et.

For anyone who has met Michael Zega, it’s clear he knows everything about the fascinating history of American railroad advertising. He did, in fact, write the book Travel By Train , and has penned numerous magazine articles on the topic. He is the person our specialists call when they have a question on railroad history or advertising minutiae. For anyone who hasn’t met Mr. Zega, it’s your lucky day to glean some insight into his favorite, most historical pieces, and hear him chat about some of the interesting images he has come across over decades of researching. At a time when very few of us have been traveling, and on the cusp of an era where the way we travel may very well change again, this event promises to appeal to the armchair traveler, the historian and the poster aficionado.

History of stary oskol.

In 1300, there was a village called Ugly on the the territory of the present city. Today, it is one of the districts of Stary Oskol. At that time, the village was part of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and was a border crossing point on the border with the Golden Horde.

The settlement of Oskol was founded by Russian Tsar Fyodor Ioanovich’s order (Ivan’s the Terrible son) to protect the southern borders of the Russian kingdom in 1593. The bulk of the population were peasants and the military.

In 1617, the town was burned by the Poles. In 1625, 1642 and 1677, the Crimean Tatars approached Stary Oskol, but could not capture it. The town was renamed Stary Oskol (meaning Old Oskol) in 1655, when the town of Tsaryov-Alexeyev, located down the river, was renamed Novy Oskol (New Oskol). Fortifications of the town existed until the 18th century.

More Historical Facts…

Gradually, Stary Oskol turned into peaceful, commercial and merchant town - the center of an agricultural district. Industrial production was represented mainly by enterprises on processing agricultural products.

In 1780, the town got its coat of arms. In 1784, Stary Oskol like most Russian towns of that time was rebuilt according to a new plan signed by Empress Catherine II. A large number of brick houses were built, mostly two-story buildings. The historic center of Stary Oskol has been preserved to our time.

In the second half of the 19th century, the town had a wide network of schools, libraries, reading rooms, printing, secondary schools. In 1894, construction of the railway began, trade and industry began to develop rapidly.

Until the 1930s, there were eleven Orthodox churches in Stary Oskol. During the Second World War, Stary Oskol was occupied by the Germans from July 2, 1942 to February 5, 1943. In 1954, the city became part of the newly formed Belgorod region.

In the late 1960s - early 1970s, in connection with the active development of the Kursk Magnetic Anomaly (the most powerful iron ore basin in the world), Stary Oskol became a major center of iron and steel industry.

Stary Oskol was declared a city of three top-priority Komsomol construction projects. The largest enterprises: Lebedinsky Mining and Processing Plant, Stoilensky Mining and Processing Plant, Oskolsky Electrometallurgical Plant became not only the city-forming enterprises, but also the largest industrial enterprises of the country. Stary Oskol experienced a new birth.

Today, Stary Oskol is a rapidly developing city, one of the leading mining and metallurgical centers of Russia.
