We will get through this together…COVID 19 travel closures

COVID 19. What a surreal world we are navigating. I have not left my house for any longer than 15 minutes since March 13. My husband is working from home and my kids are navigating the world of eLearning. And its working for us…for now. The happiest family member is Buddy, our Golden who is loving have his pack with him 24/7. Belle, our cat, is not amused. Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine this would happen. Sure, it was always a possibility but something of this magnitude is what sci fi movies are made of, right?

And thanks to COVID 19, travel has come to a total standstill. I worry about my agents and my vendors that I have come to know. But if there is one thing we consistently tell each other, it is that we will come through this together. We will.

So, as many of you are aware, most travel vendors have made the decision to temporarily close their parks or cancel sailings due to COVID 19. We want to assure you that your Wishes & Wizards Travel Co. agent is working hard to reschedule or cancel your reservations that fall during this time and we truly appreciate your patience. At this time, we can share the following travel vendors have decided to close for a limited time or cancel sailings:

• The Walt Disney World Resort and the Disneyland Resort are closed indefinitely
• Disney Cruise Line is suspending all new departures through April 28, 2020 and sailings to/from Vancouver until the end of June
• Universal Orlando and Universal Hollywood is through April 19, 2020
• Royal Caribbean Cruise Line plans to commence cruise operations with embarkations beginning May 12, 2020
• Princess Cruise Line is cancelling all cruises starting March 12th through May 10 th
• Carnival Cruise Line is cancelling all sailings through May 11, 2020

We want to thank you for your continued support, it really does mean the world to us. When we come through this, and we WILL come through this, we’re all going to want to take that vacation and your Wishes & Wizards agent will be here to help you do just that.

As WeTravel’s CEO, Ted Clements brings a customer-centric approach to fintech and B2B SaaS, with a focus on the absolving operational pain-points in the travel industry. He brings decades' worth of experience selling technology services to travel businesses to help them generate revenue -- and operate successfully. He joined WeTravel in January 2023, assuming the role of CEO. In his current role, he manages the key functions that make WeTravel successful, including: Product, Technology, Operations, Marketing and Sales. He's based in Amsterdam with his family, originally hailing from The United States.

During Johannes' time working for Doctors Without Borders and The Red Cross, he occasionally organized tours for Europeans and met with many tour organizers, who all agreed on a common pain-point: Booking trips and collecting payments was muddied and challenging. From there, the idea sparked for WeTravel. Packing his idea (and his luggage), Johannes received a Fulbright scholarship to pursue U.C. Berkeley’s MBA. Heading to every competition and pitch event known to him, Johannes and fellow Berkeley classmate, Garib, launched WeTravel’s first prototype. In January 2023, he moved from the business's CEO to CPO, managing the strategic direction of the platform's development.

With an impressive fintech background, Garib’s passion for finance and technology has strung together his life’s experiences. Before founding WeTravel in 2016, Garib held roles as CTO of UniBank, Azerbaijan’s largest bank, Engineer at Fuze, and the Co-Founder of TFI Fellowships and MPS, which he officially exited. After being introduced at a startup pitch night at UC Berkeley, Garib and Johannes found common ground in creating a technology platform to address the unmet needs of multi-day travel businesses. From there, Johannes and Garib set-out to create the WeTravel platform, enlisting the help of fellow classmate, Zaky, to launch and market the business. Now, Garib leads WeTravel’s engineering team, relying on his software and DevOps engineering background to steer the company’s technical direction.

Zaky, born in Indonesia, spent time after university as an aide to Indonesia’s President, where he, too, saw the technical issues in booking and paying for international travel. He co-founded Indorelawan, the largest marketplace for volunteers and NGOs in Indonesia, and worked in Customer Acquisition at EatWith and McKinsey before heading to America for an MBA from U.C. Berkeley. As the final founder to join WeTravel, Zaky’s marketing experience made him the perfect fit for commercializing WeTravel’s business, launching it from its prototype for student group organizers into the multi-day travel industry. He now manages the company's operations, including payment operations, customer support and public relations.

How to Start an LLC for Your Travel Agency

If you’re starting a travel agency, or you already have one, you may be ready to form a limited liability company (LLC). LLCs offer many benefits including personal liability protection, pass-through taxation, and management flexibility.

If you’re currently running your travel agency as a sole proprietorship, the biggest drawback is that you do not have personal liability protection. If, for example, a client sues you due to an issue with their vacation, your personal assets are at risk. That’s why many travel agency owners choose to operate as an LLC. 

But how do you start an LLC? In this article, you’ll find a step-by-step guide to forming an LLC for your travel agency.

Choose Your LLC Name

Your travel agency name is the identity of your business, so choose wisely. You want something unique and easy to remember but that also says what you do. Brainstorm some names and then ask your family and friends what they think. 

Be sure to check your state’s LLC name regulations to make sure your names comply. 

Once you have a few name options, you’ll need to make sure they’re available to use. Start by going to your state’s relevant website, usually the Secretary of State’s website, and do a search for the name. 

Then you’ll want to visit the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office website to find out if the name is trademarked nationally. 

Finally, you’ll need to find out if the domain name that you want is available. You can go to a site like GoDaddy to check. 

Most states will allow you to go ahead and reserve the name to make sure that no one else takes it before you get your LLC formed.

Select a Registered Agent

Nearly all states require that you have a registered agent for your LLC, which is a person or company authorized to accept official correspondence on behalf of your travel agency. You can be your own registered agent, but that requires you to be available during normal business hours at your registered address to accept correspondence in person.

To appoint someone else, you’ll first need to check your state’s registered agent requirements. Generally, a registered agent must be at least 18 years of age and have a physical address in the state, or be a company authorized to do business in the state. 

Many travel agency owners find it beneficial to hire a national registered agent service to act as their registered agent. They can ensure that you’re notified of important correspondence in a timely manner so that you can stay in compliance with any requirements of the state.

Choose a Management Structure

LLCs can be managed in two ways. They can be member-managed, meaning that all members, who are the owners of the LLC, will be involved in the day-to-day operations of the travel agency.

Alternatively, the LLC can be manager-managed, which means that not all members are involved in the management of the LLC and/or that an outside manager who is not a member will manage the LLC.

Some states require that you specify your management structure when you officially form your LLC with the state.

File Your LLC Document with Your State

In most states, the document you file to officially form your LLC is called the articles of organization, but in other states, it’s called a certificate of organization or a certificate of formation.

In almost all states, you can file this document online, usually on your Secretary of State’s website.

The information required on the document varies by state, but at the very least, it will require your travel agency’s LLC name and address and your registered agent’s information.

Some states also require member or manager names and addresses.

Fees for filing the document vary by state and range from $40 to $500. 

Create an Operating Agreement

A handful of states require that you have an operating agreement for your LLC, but most do not. However, it’s a very important document that defines the ownership percentages of the LLC, and how profits and losses are distributed, as well as the roles and responsibilities of the members or managers.

It also contains important provisions about how decisions are made, how member disputes are settled, and how ownership of the LLC can be transferred.

If you own your travel agency with partners, you can see how important it is to have this document in place. 

You can find operating agreement templates online or obtain one from an online service like ZenBusiness for a modest fee, but it’s often best to have an attorney’s help when drafting your operating agreement. You’ll want to ensure that all members’ interests are protected.

Choose Your Tax Status

One of the great things about an LLC is that you can choose how your LLC will be taxed. By default, if you are the sole member of the LLC, your travel agency is taxed as a sole proprietorship. This means that the business itself is not taxed. All profits or losses are passed through to you to be reported on your personal tax return. 

If your travel agency has multiple owners, the LLC is taxed as a partnership, which again, means the LLC is not taxed, and all profits and losses are passed through to the members based on their ownership percentages.

However, at some point, it may be beneficial for you to have your LLC taxed as an S-Corporation or a C-Corporation. The most common selection is an S-Corporation, which still offers pass-through taxation. The advantage of an S-Corp status is that profits from the LLC are not subject to self-employment taxes. 

If your LLC is taxed as a sole proprietorship or partnership, on the other hand, profits are subject to self-employment taxes.

S-Corp status, however, requires that managing members be paid a salary, which brings added administrative costs. Generally, this means that an S-Corp status will only be beneficial when your travel agency reaches a level of income that makes the self-employment tax savings higher than the additional administrative costs.

The decision on tax status is best made with the help of your tax advisor.

Apply for an EIN

Finally, you’ll need to obtain an Employer Identification Number (EIN) for your LLC. You’re required to have one if your travel agency has employees or if your LLC has more than one member. The EIN allows the IRS to identify your business for tax purposes. 

You can easily apply for an EIN for free on the IRS website . 

Starting an LLC for your travel agency has many benefits, most importantly, the personal liability protection that it offers. My family’s from the Greek island of longevity, where people often live to 100: The 12 foods we always eat

On Ikaria, the Greek island where people "forget to die," as one centenarian told longevity expert Dan Buettner , is one of a handful of Blue Zones around the globe where people live an inordinately long time. 

In 2009, Greek physicians and researchers found that 13% of Ikarians in their study were over 80, compared to about 1.5% of the global population and about 4% in North America and Europe. People on the island were 10 times more likely to live to 100 than Americans .

I have deep family roots on Ikaria, and for almost two decades, I've been running a cooking school out of the kitchen and garden of my village home. My pantry is culled from the traditions of the Mediterranean: chock-full of all the things that have long given food its flavor in this part of the world.

Here's what's in an Ikaria-inspired pantry:

Beans and legumes

These are among the seminal ingredients of the Ikarian way of eating. Adding them to your everyday meal plan is proven to increase longevity and can help you phase meat out of your diet. Try:

• Broad beans (aka, fava beans)
• Gigantes (giant beans)

I couldn't imagine my life or kitchen without garlic! It's the ultimate flavor-packing, health - providing natural ingredient. There's a virtual pharmacopeia of goodness in every clove.

Modern-day Ikarians swear by it. My daughter makes a preventive infusion of raw garlic, mountain or sage tea, ginger, and honey, which she consumes when the temperature drops or she feels a cold coming on — advice taken from our friend, Yiorgos Stenos, 91.

Garlic makes almost everything taste better. It sweetens up as it softens and cooks, lending an almost caramelized flavor to so many different foods.

Whole grains are an integral part of the Ikaria diet. Here are a few different types to keep on hand:

• Pasta, especially whole wheat pasta and gluten-free, high-protein, bean-based pastas, such as chickpea and lentil pastas

On Ikaria, myriad herbs grow wild and most of us can grow a few pots of fresh herbs at home, even if it's just on the windowsill. I use herbs with abandon in many of my recipes.

Most families have a cupboard packed with dried herbs, the therapeutic qualities of which are contained in the knowledge passed down from generation to generation. Basic dried herbs include: 

Nuts are an important ingredient in many of my plant-based recipes and traditionally are an important ingredient in Greek regional cooking. They grow abundantly throughout the country.

Here are a few of the most popular — and healthiest:

• Sesame seeds and tahini

Olives have been a staple in the Greek diet since prehistoric times, and they're one of the many preserves I always keep stocked.

In Greece, they're traditionally eaten on their own or in salads. I love to pair them with pantry staples like beans or pasta and other grains.

Olive oil is the defining food of the Mediterranean diet and an absolute must in the pantry. 

Many of the health benefits associated with the Mediterranean diet, and, by extension, the Ikaria diet, are attributed to the health properties of olive oil . I only use extra virgin oil, which simply means the oil is unrefined.

On Ikaria, many people, myself included, use sea salt that collects in the small natural salt basins that have formed along the island's rocky coastline over eons. It tastes better than regular table salt, which comes from mines and is heavily processed.  

This is one of my personal favorites. Consuming honey daily is one of the longevity secrets of the islanders. Honey is antibacterial , rich in antioxidants including flavonoids , and — unlike white sugar or artificial sweeteners — helps the body to regulate blood sugar levels . Many people here eat a spoonful every morning. 

You can add a liberal drizzle to your tea or a breakfast smoothie bowl, or whisk it into dressings.

Dried fruits

Figs and raisins are two dried fruits I always have on hand to use in all sorts of savory dishes, especially in salads and rice dishes.

Yogurt is a fermented food that has been part of the culinary tapestry of the Eastern Mediterranean for thousands of years. The traditional yogurt on Ikaria is produced with goat's milk and has a delicious sour flavor and creamy texture.

If goat's milk yogurt isn't to your liking, you might prefer the Greek yogurt commonly found in American supermarkets, which is similarly rich in probiotics.

Feta and similar cheeses

Almost all the cheese Ikarians make and eat is produced with goat's milk or sheep's milk, like feta. Much of it is naturally fermented.

Over the years of teaching mostly Americans who come to my classes, I've had many guests who are lactose intolerant but are able to enjoy the island's traditional goat's milk cheeses and even a glass or two of fresh goat's milk without a problem.

Google will now let you use AI to build travel itineraries for your vacations

As we inch toward the summer holidays, Google is announcing a slate of travel updates that place it squarely in the travel planning process and give it a lot more insight into purchasing intent in the travel sector.

First up, Google is rolling out an update to its  Search Generative Experience (SGE) that will allow users to build travel itineraries and trip ideas using AI, the company announced on Wednesday.

The new capability — currently only available in English in the U.S. to users enrolled in Search Labs , its program that lets users experiment with early-stage Google Search experiences and share feedback — draws on ideas from sites across the web, along with reviews, photos and other details that people have submitted to Google for places around the world.

When users ask for something like “plan me a three day trip to Philadelphia that’s all about history,” they will get a sample itinerary that includes attractions and restaurants, as well as an overview of options for flights and hotels, divided up by times of day.

For now, the itineraries are just that: There are no options to buy services or experiences on the spot. When you’re happy with your itinerary, you can export it to Gmail, Docs or Maps.

Google has not commented on when or if it might roll this out more widely. But it points to how the company is experimenting with how and where it can apply its AI engine. A lot of players in the travel industry may be eyeing up the role that generative AI will play in travel services in the coming years — some excitedly, some warily. But even now, startups like Mindtrip and Layla , which provide users with access to AI assistants that are designed to help you plan your trips, are already actively pursuing this.

But with this new update, Google is taking on startups like these while also gathering data about travel purchasing intent (useful for its wider ad business) and learning what kind of appetite its users might have for such services.

Google also announced that it’s making it easier to discover lists of recommendations in Google Maps in select cities in the U.S. and Canada. If you search for a city in Maps, you will now see lists of recommendations for places to go from publishers like The Infatuation, as well as from other users. You will also see curated lists of top, trending, and hidden gem restaurants in 40+ U.S. cities.

Finally, the company is adding new tools to help you customize lists you create, so you can better organize your travel plans or share your favorite spots with your friends and family. You can choose the order the places appear in a list so you can organize them by top favorites or chronologically like an itinerary. Plus, you can link to content from your social channels.

What is an aftershock? This is what may follow the earthquake felt in NJ and NYC.

A 4.8 magnitude earthquake rattled New Jersey and New York City residents on Friday morning, with reports of shaking furniture and floors. No major disruptions or damage have been reported in the area.

Experts told USA TODAY that earthquakes are common in this region, but usually happen at a lower magnitude. It's unlikely a larger quake will follow, but officials are warning of possible aftershocks.

What is an aftershock?

Aftershocks are small earthquakes that occur in the days, months or years in the general area following an earthquake. Aftershocks are minor readjustments made near the faults , or areas where stress occurs during the earthquake.

Aftershocks can occur in the thousands and can still be damaging or deadly. In earthquakes, the “mainshock” is the largest activity felt during an earthquake. 

Seismologists primarily use Bath’s law, Gutenberg-Richter law and Omori’s law to describe the behavior of aftershocks.

• Bath’s law says that aftershocks will typically be about 1.2 magnitude units smaller than the mainshock .
• Omori’s law says the number of aftershocks will decrease as time passes, according to a seismology lab from the University of California, Berkeley.  

Aftershocks are not to be confused with swarms , which are sequences of small earthquakes associated with geothermal activity with no identifiable mainshock.

What's the chance of an aftershock?

Any time there's an earthquake , one concern is that it was merely a foreshock to a bigger quake that's coming.

Globally, the probability one earthquake will be followed by a large earthquake within 3 days is somewhere just over 6%, according to USGS . That means whenever there's an earthquake, there's about a 94% chance that it wasn't a foreshock and there won't be any more quakes linked to it.

The numbers are a little different for California, which is very seismically active. There, about half of the biggest earthquakes were preceded by foreshocks, according to USGS. But that means half were not.

Unfortunately, it's impossible to know if any one quake is a foreshock.

What is a foreshock?

Foreshocks come before large earthquakes, in the same location. Sometimes a foreshock may be identified incorrectly as the mainshock until a larger one occurs after it. 

Neither foreshocks nor aftershocks can be bigger than the mainshock. 

Why does the Earth shake when there’s an earthquake?

Earthquakes are caused by a slip on a fault, which is a fracture zone between two blocks of rock. The tectonic plates move, but their edges remain in place until this slip, when the stress overcomes the friction that normally holds them there. This causes the rest of the block to move and causes waves of energy that travel through the earth’s crust. These seismic waves shake the earth as they move through it. 

What to do during an earthquake:

Staying vigilant during an earthquake is important, especially when it comes to aftershocks that may cause damage after the mainshock. Here are tips from the California Geological Survey to keep in mind:

During an earthquake:

• Indoors: Stay indoors and away from exterior walls, glass, heavy furniture, fireplaces and appliances. Avoid elevators, windows and doorways. 
• Outdoors: Stay in the open if you’re outside, away from buildings, powerlines or other falling hazards.
• Driving: Move the car out of traffic and stop, avoiding trees, light posts, signs and powerlines or anything that could fall, like bridges or underpasses.
• Mountains: Watch out for potential landslides and get to high ground.
• Crowded place: Avoid panicking and rushing, stay low and cover your head and neck with youtr arms

After an earthquake:

• Listen to the radio for instructions, especially about aftershocks
• Check for fire hazards and fire
• Avoid driving to keep streets clear for emergency vehicles
• Check for damage in your home and for structures that are about to fall
• Share your location with family and friends
