Celebrity Apex

The Celebrity Apex – which made its inaugural sailing in June 2021 – can hold up to 2,910 passengers and 1,320 crew members. Guests can wine and dine at 29 restaurants, bars and lounges, then spend the night testing their luck at the casino or enjoying live music at the Magic Carpet (which offers great ocean views). Specialty restaurants include a steakhouse and a raw bar, while main dining options feature Mediterranean, Italian and French cuisines. There are also meeting spaces and multipurpose areas on board, as well as upscale shops.

Visit the spa or adults-only Solarium pool to stay relaxed throughout your stay at sea. For younger travelers, there are some kid-friendly areas of the ship – such as a Camp at Sea. The ship's staterooms, which start at 181 square feet, offer smart TVs, customizable air conditioning and plenty of storage space. Many rooms also offer private verandas. Plus, rooms in The Retreat offer more space, measuring up to 1,892 square feet.

Other standard in-room amenities include interactive flat-screen TVs, luxurious bath products, bathrobes and slippers, signature queen-size beds and dining tables for two. There are 10 suite categories available, ranging from the smallest Veranda (307 square feet) and Deluxe Veranda suites (308 to 361 square feet) to the largest Regent (4,443 square feet) and Master suites (1,895 to 2,108 square feet).

When it comes to food, Seven Seas Splendor offers eight eateries ranging from casual to fine dining. Enjoy your breakfast alfresco at La Veranda and grub down for lunch at the Pool Grill buffet. For something more formal, opt for a French-inspired meal at Chartreuse, Pan-Asian dishes at Pacific Rim or Compass Rose, the largest restaurant on the ship.

Debuted in May 2023, Oceania Cruises' first new ship in more than a decade can hold up to 1,200 passengers and 800 crew members. Vista is the inaugural ship in Oceania's Allura Class, featuring top-of-the-line amenities like a culinary center, an artist loft and an extensive library, along with facilities like a pool, a casino, a spa and a fitness center. Additionally, Vista offers enrichment opportunities like destination-focused seminars led by guest speakers and dynamic musical performances.

One of the highlights of Oceania Vista is its wide array of dining venues, from specialty restaurants like Ember (American fare) and Toscana (Italian cuisine) to the poolside Waves Grill and daily afternoon tea service. In the evening, guests can grab a drink at their choice of several bars and lounges; Vista's immersive mixology program utilizes innovative techniques and trends to create an elevated cocktail experience.

Vista's well-appointed staterooms – which range from 240 to 2,400 square feet – boast balconies, queen-size beds, rainforest showers, flat-screen TVs and 24-hour room service, among other amenities. If you splurge for a suite, you'll enjoy added benefits like iPads, cashmere blankets, complimentary laundry and shoeshine services, access to the Executive Lounge and butler service.

Oceania Vista explores an array of popular destinations in the U.S., the Caribbean, Mexico, the Mediterranean and more.

U.S. News Insider Tip:  The design of the Vista creates more expansive and contemporary public areas than other ships in Oceania's fleet, so even when the ship is at full capacity, it never feels crowded. Also, since it is an all-veranda ship, all guests have the same great ocean view. – Julie L. Kessler, Contributor

Southampton Cruise Port – 7 Great Places to View Cruise Ships Sailing From Southampton

GUEST POST BY DAN FROM SOUTHAMPTON

When cruising from Southampton you might travel down a day or two before your trip starts.

If you enjoy watching the cruise ships sailing then this post is for you! Here is a list of seven places/ways you can go and watch the ships sailing from Southampton.

1. Mayflower Park

Set adjacent to the Holiday Inn, this large open park down by the water.

It is right beside the City Cruise Terminal. It’s ideal for watching any ship depart from there as well as any from the Mayflower Cruise Terminal.

It is no good for any ships that are down in the Eastern Docks. There is often an Ice Cream Van there (even in the middle of winter on occasion!)

So if it’s a lovely hot summer’s day and you fancy an Ice Cream whilst waiting for the ships to leave this is the place to go.

The best time of year to view the ships from Mayflower Park is from January to early June.

After this, the posts for the pontoons for the Southampton Boat Show get put up. (Even though the event isn’t until September) and then aren’t removed until around December so this will obscure your view.

southampton p&o oriana Mayflower Park

2.Town Quay

This is probably the best-known location to go and watch the ships depart from.

Ships from the Mayflower and City Terminals come past here, and those in the Ocean Terminal come out close to the pier.

Town Quay was once the pier used by the old Paddle Steamers, back in the days of the great Ocean Liners.

If ships are in bow-first it makes an added spectacle as they have to turn in front of you before sailing off down towards the Solent.

Whilst it is also possible to view ships in the Queen Elizabeth II Terminal, they usually reverse around to turn off the Dock Head – so it isn’t the best place for ships moored there.

The pier has a “Pay and Display” car park. It also is the place to board the Hythe Ferry and Red Jets high-speed service to the Isle of Wight.

Town Quay southampton britannia p&o

3. Hythe Marina Village

Probably one of the two best locations to view the ships when the weather is at its best is the Marina Village, just opposite Dock Head.

All ships that are moored in the docks will come past here. If they are docked starboard-side to at the Queen Elizabeth II Terminal then chances are you will see them turn directly in front of you.

There are two vantage points on opposite sides of the Lock Entrance to the Marina. Be careful of the extremely heavy gates that you go through to access the walkway.

Hythe can be accessed by both the Hythe Ferry and Bluestar Buses Nos.8 and 9.

Make sure you check the bus return times on a Sunday , as they finish earlier.

Hythe Marina Village southampton norwegian jade navigator of the seas

4. Weston Shore

Situated almost directly opposite Hythe is Weston Shore, probably best recognisable for its line of Tower Blocks.

There is a long beach where the ships can be viewed from – although they are quite a way out from the shore.

This can be tricky for seeing small ships such as Fred Olsen ’s Braemar or Azamara Journey.

It isn’t a problem for the mighty ships like Queen Mary 2, Britannia and Royal Princess.

The red No.2 bus frequently goes from Town Centre to Weston Shore. The drop-off point is by a Co-Op.

Weston Shore southampton cruise ship queen victoria

5. Royal Victoria Park

Another recognisable landmark for anyone sailing down Southampton Water is the tower of the former hospital at Netley.

It now is the centrepiece of Royal Victoria Country Park.

This location has a similar issue with distance from the ships as Weston Shore but it’s a great place to explore and is excellent for wide shots.

6. Calshot Spit

Reaching the end of Southampton Water is Calshot Spit.

It is here that the ships begin their turn to leave the water and enter the Solent. They then left again off Cowes to head east to the Nab Tower.

Calshot has a very long shingle beach and loads of parking space.

The old fort and the Radar Tower are the best place to watch the ships as they come close to there.

Just make sure you stand well back from the edge after the ship has passed. Otherwise their wash might get your feet wet!

Whilst this is probably the best place to watch the ships, it is also the trickiest to get to.

Whilst the Blue Star No.8 Bus does go there, they don’t run as often to Calshot in the evenings. It is preferred that you only go if you have your own transport.

Calshot southampton cruise ship queen mary 2

7. From the Water

The final place to view the ships is from the water itself.

This can vary from the Hythe Ferry to Blue Funnel Harbour Tours based at Ocean Village.

As well as from the top deck of the Red Funnel car ferries or if you get the chance, take a cruise aboard the Glasgow-built Steamship “Shieldhall.”

You may have seen “Sheildhall” on a summer Saturday or Sunday sailing past your ship as you’ve departed from Southampton.

I hope you have found this list interesting and that it’s given you some ideas as to what to do if you come down for your cruise a day or two early!

I sailed out of Southampton on a Christmas Cruise to the Canary Islands. I was hoping to find a bit of winter sunshine, but that really wasn’t the case! Find out more about that trip here:

Emma and Symphony of the Seas

Emma says:  Thanks for this one so much Dan! Southampton is my closest cruise port so I’ve loved seeing all of these photos of the ships in port. Lots of my favourite ships there too! MSC Meraviglia, Royal Princess and Britannia!

I’m sure this post will help out people who are visiting Southampton. I LOVE that feeling when you first set eyes on a ship and realise you’ll be boarding her soon!

daniel gosling

Hi, I am Dan and I live in the Southampton area where I regularly go to watch the cruise ships in Southampton and occasionally elsewhere.

I also take at least one cruise a year if I can, which I hope to build on in years to come.

Famous for its Neolithic engineering as well as its mysteriousness, Stonehenge features a stone circle that was built from massive stones weighing as much as 25 tons that had to have been transported incredibly long distances using only the simple tools they had available at the time. It’s an incredible experience to walk around the circle and imagine a former civilization constructing it thousands of years ago.

Top Sights & Attractions Near Southampton

Windsor castle.

Visit the State Apartments, where Queen Elizabeth used to host her official visits. See Queen Mary’s doll house from the 1920s, which was built to include electricity and running water. Stop in St. George’s Chapel, the site where Prince Harry and Meghan Markle got married in 2018.

The picturesque meadows became the unofficial birthplace of democracy over 800 years ago, when King James signed the Magna Carta into existence. What food should I try in Southampton?

For a quintessential English dining experience, look for menus with the following items: Bakewell pudding, a dessert with a pastry base that has an almond filling and is topped with jam and icing; spotted dick, another dessert pudding featuring currants and raisins; Cornish pastry, a savory pastry filled with meat and vegetables; Lancashire hotpot, a stew made with lamb and potatoes; fish and chips, with battered, deep-fried fish served alongside fries; and curry, since England is known for its Indian and Bangladeshi food, particularly chicken tikka masala.

When you’re in England, don’t miss the chance to savor the country’s iconic traditional breakfast of bacon, sausage, fried eggs, baked beans, mushrooms, black pudding, a roasted tomato, and toast.

Afternoon tea is also a popular way to get a taste of England. A traditional English tea usually has scones with jam, butter, clotted cream, and tea. A couple of the best places to get tea during your Southampton cruise port of call are at Grand Café, which offers two different types of afternoon tea, and Elsie’s Tea Room, which has a vintage feel.

6 Top Transatlantic Cruises for 2024

T ransatlantic cruises are unique when you compare them to traditional cruises most people book for family trips and romantic getaways. These voyages tend to be longer in general, and they have more built-in days at sea and offer a lot more time on board as a result. Repositioning cruises that include a transatlantic crossing tend to attract more retirees and travelers who just want to relax and enjoy their ships' amenities, especially since fewer days in port means fewer excursions and more time doing nothing at all.

That said, the fact that transatlantic cruises can last as few as seven nights means they may fit in your plans more easily than you may think. There are also some benefits to transatlantic crossings that may not be obvious, including lower nightly rates, more onboard credit, and more time to kick back and relax at a floating luxury resort in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean.

If you're curious which transatlantic cruises are best for 2024, here are six top picks with different cruise lengths, itineraries and unique destinations to explore.

Explore cruises on GoToSea , a service of U.S. News.

Cunard Line

Date: Departs May 5, 2024

Departure port: Brooklyn, New York

Starting price: $2,449 per person (plus port taxes and fees)

Cruise length: 7 to 18 nights

In May of 2024, Cunard's Queen Mary 2 vessel will offer three different transatlantic crossings of various lengths. Choose from a seven-night sailing from Brooklyn, New York , to Southampton, England; a nine-night sailing to Hamburg, Germany ; and an 18-night round-trip sailing that departs from Brooklyn and crosses the Atlantic twice on the way back to its starting point. This unique combination of itineraries lets you cross the sea and tailor your trip to how long you want to be away from home.

The 18-night itinerary is especially interesting, since it lets you depart from the United States and arrive back in Brooklyn in the end with stops in both England and Germany, as well as plenty of sea days in between. Luxury cruise line Cunard is known for its elegant design, lush amenities and upscale feel, and the Queen Mary 2 is one of the line's most luxurious ships. Highlights on this exclusive vessel include the Royal Court Theatre, a casino, gala evenings, an onboard spa and a vast library. The Queen Mary 2 holds up to 2,691 guests with 1,173 crew to cater to your every need.

Seabourn Cruise Line

Date: Departs March 24, 2024

Departure port: Miami

Starting price: $5,949 per person (plus port taxes and fees)

Cruise length: 21 nights

Seabourn is offering a 21-night transatlantic cruise from Miami on Seabourn Quest in March 2024 that offers a diverse range of ports of call before ending its voyage in Las Palmas in Spain's Canary Islands . Departure from Miami is followed by nine days at sea. Then, you'll enjoy multiple stops in the Canary Islands – including Santa Cruz de La Palma and San Sebastián de La Gomera – as well as stops in Praia and Mindelo the Cape Verde archipelago.

This journey with Seabourn makes it possible for travelers to see some of the most beautiful and remote tropical islands in the world. The Canary Islands are known for their white sand beaches , volcanoes and lush greenery; similar landscapes can also be found in Cape Verde's coastal towns and villages. Seabourn Quest, a smaller ocean vessel, accommodates just 229 guests.

MSC Cruises

Date: Departs Nov. 8, 2024

Departure port: Southampton, England

Starting price: $769 per person (plus port taxes and fees)

Cruise length: 16 nights

The MSC Virtuosa from MSC Cruises is repositioning from Europe to the Caribbean in November 2024, which gives travelers the chance to enjoy a lengthy transatlantic crossing with plenty of unique ports. This sailing departs from England with eight sea days plus stops in France, the Azores of Portugal, St. Maarten , Antigua and Barbuda, and Martinique . The ship ends its journey in Pointe-a-Pitre, Guadeloupe.

The MSC Virtuosa is a larger cruise vessel that boasts an impressive grand promenade with a LED dome ceiling, dedicated clubs for children and teens, an onboard spa, a lavish casino and the luxurious MSC Yacht Club section of the ship. This vessel holds a maximum of 6,334 passengers at once.

Princess Cruises

Date: Departs July 5, 2024

Departure port: New York City (Manhattan or Brooklyn)

Starting price: $4,098 per person (plus port taxes and fees)

Cruise length: 31 nights

Princess Cruises also offers its share of transatlantic sailings on various vessels. Its 31-night crossing from New York to Barcelona, Spain , on Island Princess in July 2024 is jam-packed with exciting destinations to explore. This lengthy transatlantic voyage has only 13 sea days with planned stops in Canada's Newfoundland, Greenland, Iceland, Scotland, England, Spain, Portugal and Morocco before the journey ends in Barcelona.

This intriguing sailing experience with Princess takes passengers to eight different countries in the span of a month. Island Princess is a nice ship for a long sailing because of its smaller size, with just 2,200 passengers and 900 crew. But the ship is also large enough to have a huge selection of included and specialty dining options, a Vegas-style casino, a sports court, a large central atrium for gathering, and several pools and hot tubs to enjoy.

Celebrity Cruises

Date: Departs April 11, 2024

Departure port: Fort Lauderdale, Florida

Starting price: $760 per person (plus port taxes and fees)

Cruise length: 12 nights

Celebrity Cruises is offering a 12-night sailing on Celebrity Equinox in April 2024 that starts in Fort Lauderdale, Florida , and ends in Lisbon, Portugal – making it possible for travelers to enjoy eight relaxing days at sea. What's interesting about this sailing is its stops along the way, which include the Royal Naval Dockyard in Bermuda; Porta Delgada in Portugal's Azores archipelago; and Porto in mainland Portugal.

The Celebrity Equinox accommodates a maximum of just 2,852 passengers at once, so this Celebrity vessel is a solid choice for travelers who want just the right size ship instead of a smaller vessel or a megaship. There are also plenty of onboard features to keep you happy and entertained as you float across the Atlantic Ocean, including The Casino, The Lawn Club with outdoor games like bocce ball and croquet, The Martini Bar, the adults-only Solarium and more.

Royal Caribbean International

Dates: Departs Oct. 24, 2024

Departure port: Barcelona, Spain

Starting price: $876 per person (plus port taxes and fees)

Cruise length: 14 nights

Royal Caribbean's Oasis of the Seas is hosting a transatlantic voyage in October 2024 that departs from Barcelona, Spain, and ends in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. This vessel will make stops in Palma de Mallorca, Valencia, Cartagena and Málaga in Spain, then spend eight days at sea. After that, enjoy a day in Nassau in the Bahamas before the cruise drops passengers off in sunny Florida.

Interior staterooms on this Royal Caribbean sailing start at just $876 per person (plus port taxes and fees), which works out to around $60 per night, per person. The Oasis of the Seas megaship can hold a total of 6,771 guests and 2,109 crew, so it's an enormous vessel – to put it mildly. This size may not be ideal for travelers who want a more intimate cruising experience, but it's perfect for cruisers who want plenty of space to spread out and endless activities to take part in. Oasis of the Seas boasts 20 different restaurants and cafes, 11 bars and lounges, a variety of pools and whirlpools, a rock climbing wall, the AquaTheater diving and entertainment venue, mini-golf, a casino and plenty more.
