Hummingbird Mindo Best Day Trip from Quito

13 Best Weekend and Day Trips from Quito, Ecuador

There’s a natural inclination to peer out of an airplane’s window in search of unfamiliar land and life below. And, as the faintest indicators present themselves, every traveller experiences a jolt of elation that takes them back to youthful Christmas days. Descending into Quito Airport provokes more robust feelings that’ll leave travelers breathless and stupidly saying “WOW”.

Situated high in the Andes, Quito, in Ecuador, unfurls more than 35km in length and just 5km in width. To the east, the Valle de los Chillos marks the decline towards the  Ecuadorian Amazon , while the west is strikingly enveloped by the steep verdure of Volcán Pichincha – the region’s active volcano. Even before landing, you’ll realize there’s an abundance of day trips from Quito that’ll tickle every type of fancy under the sun.  For some, one day is not enough and should be done as weekend trips from Quito.

NATIONAL PARK DAY AND WEEKEND TRIPS

Cotopaxi national park.

Cotopaxi Volcano Day Trips from Quito

Like moths to a flame, travelers often seek experiences that defy the limitations of everyday life. One of the most exhilarating ways in which to achieve such a goal is to traverse headfirst over the contours of an active volcano.

A little over an hour from Quito city, the 33,393 hectares of Cotopaxi National Park is home to the snow-capped Cotopaxi Volcano – the second highest active volcano in the world. Its perfectly symmetrical cone towers 19,347ft over relatively flat terrain, meaning on a clear day its peak can be seen from Quito city centre.

With over 24 species of bird and a wide variety of ecosystems, forests, lakes, and lagoons, Cotopaxi National Park is a playground for outdoor adventure enthusiasts. The easiest way to see Cotopaxi National Park is to pre-book a tour with  Viator, who are offering many types of tours here .

Start your day trip here by hiking to Laguna Limpiopungo where Andean gulls and hummingbirds often nest. Then hike or bike to José Rivas refuge before continuing on a well-defined path to Cotopaxi’s summit ranger station. For those who love wild animals, there are hundreds of wild horses at Cotopaxi; and Tambopaxi Lodge is offering guided horseback riding tours – lasting from one to eight hours – to explore the national park.

Weekend Trip to the Galápagos Island s

Most Beautiful Places in Ecuador Galapagos Weekend Trip from Quito

For millions of years, the Galápagos Islands were a well-guarded secret from mankind. During this time, the islands evolved into a colony of red- and blue-footed boobies, frigate birds, flamingos, sea and marine iguanas, and giant tortoises. There are more native species here than anywhere else in Ecuador. It’s no wonder Charles Darwin spent 19 days studying the islands in 1835: and his published work  On the Origin of Species  introduced the world to evolution and the exquisite beauty of the Galápagos Islands.

Although difficult to do as just a day trip from Quito, a weekend trip from Quito to the Galapagos islands can certainly be achieved. While you can’t do a Galapagos luxury cruise in that time frame, you can certainly explore one or two islands on a land trip. Flights from Quito to Galápagos depart multiple times each day : once landed, travelers should spend the day island hopping, snorkeling, and hiking.

NATURE RESERVE TRIPS FROM QUITO

Weekend trip to mindo valley.

Hummingbird Mindo Best Day Trips from Quito

Situated just 90km from the city of Quito ,  the pint-sized  pueblo  (small town) of  Mindo is the jungle retreat you never knew you needed. Mindo valley, the area that the town is located in, is the ultimate bucket list destination for bird watchers. With multiple nature and bird reserves , the area is known to have one of the largest concentration of birds in the world. In fact, there are many species of birds that are only found in the area.

Birding in Mindo Valley

Not that into birds? Don’t worry, there is plenty more to do in Mindo Valley. From visiting a butterfly farm to ziplining through dense rainforest, Mindo is the most diverse of day trips from Quito  and its off-the-beaten-track position lends itself to isolation and solitude. However, Mindo also hums with the subtle tones of native Ecuadorian wildlife – from its multitude of birds, sprightly butterflies, and many species flying to and from its orchid gardens.

It’s not a surprise then that Mindo has become a popular destination for backpackers. But it’s much more than that: it’s a spot for culinary experiences and delightful aromatics of chocolate and coffee made locally in the area which combined will delight your nose and tastebuds.

Hiking is also spectacular in the area. But for those who don’t want to  hike the   Mindo Cloud Forest,  the  tarabita  (cable car) transports small groups over the Nambillo River and Cascada Nambillo waterfall; then, you can tube down the Río Mindo River, mountain bike, or go birdwatching.

Weekend Trip to the Amazon Rainforest

Amazon Rainforest Day Trip from Quito

As the most diverse biosphere on the planet, the  Amazon Rainforest is known for being the “lungs of the Earth .” But it is also a place shrouded in mystery, with many dangers lurking beyond the designated paths, and its humid climate requires visitors to muster their innermost strength. It is the destination that cuts all ties with civilization, and the rustle of leaves and branches you thought you’d hear gives way to a deafening quiet similar to the stillness after a storm.

Although a day or two is not enough to explore all the wonders of the Amazon rainforest, if you are short on time it could be done as a weekend trip from Quito.

How can you make the most of a short trip to the Amazon Rainforest?  Pre-book a trip with Viator , who’ll privately pick you up from your Quito hotel, and take you, for two days, into the thick of the jungle. An overnight stay is arranged in locally built lodges, and traditional cuisine is served at night. Rising before sunrise, travelers hike from their accommodation to meet local communities, traverse along calm rivers, and learn about the native wildlife from their private guide.

Day trip to La Paz las Aves Refuge & Alambi Hummingbird Sanctuary

Cock in the Rock La Paz las Aves

La Paz las Aves  translates to ‘Peace of the Birds Sanctuary’ and is considered to be one of the wonders of the natural world. For those who aren’t able to explore the Amazon Rainforest, this sanctuary is a superb alternative as it’s the best destination for birdwatching in Ecuador, with the Andean cock-of-the-rock in resident, five species of antipas, and more than 170 bird species roaming about.

Located in the private cloud forest between Nanegalito and Mindo ,  there are multiple trails where birding naturalists guide travellers past birds that are usually impossible to see in the wild, including toucanets, olivaceous pihas, the blue-winged mountain-tanager, and the colourful toucan barbet. Once you’ve had your fill of birdsong, head to the Alambi Cloud Forest Reserve for the melodious tunes of the hummingbird.

Pasochoa Forest Reserve

Pasochoa Mountain Reserve Quito Day Trips

Declared a protected area in 1982 and later a Wildlife Refuge in 1996, the Pasochoa Forest Reserve is one of the few remaining original Andean forests. Situated within an extinct volcanic crater, travellers will become acquainted with their daredevil side as they can hike five different trails of varying lengths and difficulty through the Andean biodiversity, grasslands, and cloud forests, before marvelling at the exquisite viewpoints, including snow-capped volcanoes.

Or they can do an extreme adventure excursion, climbing the rocky volcano and spending the night camping under the stars or enjoying the afternoon sojourning at the Pasochoa refuge lodge, kitchen, or picnic area. It is best to take the highway to Los Chillos Valley from Quito and continue on the road to San Rafael-Amaguaña. Here, hire a pickup truck that goes directly to the refuge.

HIKING DAY TRIPS FROM QUITO

Cayambe volcano  .

Cayambe Ecological Reserve Volcano Ecuador

At an altitude of 4,690m and situated within the Cayambe Ecological Reserve, Cayambe Volcano is Ecuador’s third-highest peak and the only peak in the world to be crossed by the Equator. For those looking for unique experiences, this is certainly a day trip from Quito made for you, as Cayambe Volcano is the only point on the Equator with snow cover. It is only 70 km north-east of Quito; and a day tour gives travelers a rare opportunity of hiking near a glacier.

Starting in Cayambe town, your private guide will transfer you into a four-wheel drive to Oleas Berge refuge before driving over green farmlands – home to many grazing alpacas. From here, beginner hikers should enjoy the dramatic views from the foothills, while more experienced climbers can try their luck with the mountain’s technical terrain.

After a short time, Glaciar Hermoso, translated as ‘Beautiful Glacier’, provides the opportunity to marvel at the ice towers formed by the volcano. Before returning to Quito city, guests are invited to try a steaming cup of coca tea and traditional lunch at the refuge.

Pululahua Volcano Crater & Mitad del Mundo

The saying ‘two for the price of one’ speaks to the bargain hunters within us all, and this  day trip from Quito to Pululahua Volcano Crater and Mitad del Mundo  – ‘Middle of the World’ – is up there with the best of deals. Taking the only double-decker bus from Quito, travelers set off with bilingual tour guides to Pululahua to see one of only two inhabited craters in the world.

From the small town in the crater, guests are transported to Mitad del Mundo monument and its Ethnographic Museum, where you can get a photo with one foot in the Northern and one in the Southern Hemisphere, after which you can tell your friends you’ve actually been in two places at once.

With a 4D movie theatre, a beer museum, Ecuadorean chocolate factory, an exhibition of Guayasamin paintings, and a planetarium, there’s certainly something to do for everyone.

Laguna de Cuicocha & Otavalo Market

Cuicocha Lagoona Best Day Trips from Quito

A still, dark blue lagoon cushioned in a collapsed volcanic crater of 3km wide and 200m deep, the Laguna de Cuicocha is an exceedingly alkaline lake featuring two mounded islands. These uninhabited islands came into existence after a couple of eruptions: and, according to the indigenous people, the larger of the two resembles the appearance of a guinea pig – hence the name  cuicocha , meaning ‘guinea pig lake’.

Laguna de Cuicocha is the lesser-known version of  Quilotoa Lagoon  (which is equally impressive to hike), and its jagged ridge and well-marked paths allow travelers to hike the lake’s entire circumferences – a 14 km circuit – without bumping into another person.

Before returning to your Quito hotel, travelers have the option to visit Otavalo Market which is just a 40-minute drive from Cuicocha. There are  multiple tours to Otavalo Market , which is an excellent place to discover a community of indigenous locals who not only wear traditional clothing that maintains their cultural identity but are famous for their weaving skills and colourful textiles.

HOT SPRINGS & WATERFALLS

Papallacta hot springs.

Papallacta Termas

Only 40 miles from Quito lie the Papallacta Hot Springs . They are   surrounded by verdant mountains, tropical flowers, and native animals, including hummingbirds, wild Pampas cats, and pikas. Their website promotes ‘health through water’ and ‘relaxation, nature, rest’ – concepts that soothe the soul, nourish the mind, and rejuvenate the body. And, after bustling days in the city of Quito or hiking and sightseeing the best of Ecuador, a day or overnight stay at the spa is just what the doctor ordered.

A place that combines the warmth of personable service and privacy with the splendor of the natural environment, the Papallacta Hot Springs thermal pools, lush gardens, restaurant, and plethora of treatments such as aromatherapy, massages, and facials will make you never want to leave. Its thermal volcanic waters have no end of health benefits due to its minerals, and the waters will gently exfoliate your skin.

Peguche Waterfall

Peguche Waterfall Quito Day Trips

Considered the most brilliant waterfall in northern Ecuador, Peguche Waterfall, otherwise known as  Cascadas de Peguche,  is located 3km from Otavalo and is easily accessible from the city of Quito. At 18m tall, the waterfall is considered to be sacred by the locals and during Inti Raymi – the festival of the sun in June – and it is a place of purification, with locals conducting ritual cleansing baths here.

A cobblestone street marks its entrance with stalls of handicrafts, traditional snacks, and drinks, further welcoming visitors into the Ecuadorian culture. Continue on this path to the top of the river where a secret second waterfall and mysterious caves beg to be explored. Paddle or bathe in the neighbouring  hot springs  or amble along the modest stream where chinchillas, guinea pigs, or the sound of birds can be found.

CITY GETAWAYS

Santo domingo.

For those looking for day trips from Quito that involve a shopping or nightclub fix, head to Santo Domingo.  It’s a driving distance of 132 km from the city of Quito. With its bustling energy, Santo Domingo also has a lot of history; and the statue of Ecuadorian hero, Antonio José de Sucre, stands tall in the middle of its plaza, pointing towards the area where the battle for Ecuadorian independence was won in 1822.

Before heading to one of its multiple restaurants for delicious traditional Ecuadorian food, make sure to visit the Tsáchilla communities, whose inhabitants have bowl haircuts smoothed down with bright red  achiote  dye. It is no wonder these people became known as  Los Colorados , meaning coloured or red-heads. Then, pop over to La Perla Protected Forest, Lelia River, and ‘El Bombolí’ for a wonderful view.

Banos Most Beautiful Places in Ecuador

For the thrill-seekers and adventurers, Banos is the ultimate weekend getaway from Quito. Although it could be done as one very long day trip from Quito, with so much to do it is recommended to spend at least a couple days in this beautiful town.

Banos (full name Baños de Agua Santa) is located approximately 3.5 hours driving from Quito. This small city truly has something for everyone. For those looking for day trips from Quito that have beautiful waterfalls, adrenaline-packed adventures including waterfall rappelling, white water rafting, swinging out over massive cliffs on swings or simply relaxing in a thermal spa, you can find it all in Banos de Agua Santa.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

All the aforementioned day trips from Quito can be taken on your own by renting a car. The roads in Ecuador are in great shape and driving is relatively easy. Alternatively, you could hire a driver for a day or take a tour to any of these destinations. Finally, Quito has great public transportation options if you prefer to get around by bus and train.

Otavalo and Cotacachi

Otavalo lies roughly 90 minutes from Quito and is most famous for its handicraft market in the Plaza de Los Ponchos. It is a large and colourful market that is open every day, with the busiest time on Saturdays. The indigenous Otavalo people , who are native to the Andes and speak the Kiwcha language, make all the textiles by hand. If you’re worried about being able to communicate, many of them also know how to speak Spanish and English. You can stay the night in Otavalo in a hostel or a guest house such as El Andariego . It’s also possible to head straight to Cotacachi and stay the night there so that you can be ready for the next day’s activities.

Cotacachi is a 20-minute drive from Otavalo and is a popular town with expats. If you only have time to do one thing here, you should check out the Crater Lake Cuicocha . You can walk around the crater in about five hours. There are also ferries that go to the islands in the crater. You can see Cuicocha in one day and then stay the night at the breathtaking Hotel La Mirage Garden .

otavalo market

Day Trips from Quito

Most Popular Day Trip from Quito

Known for having South America’s largest artisan handicrafts market, the small mountain town of Otavalo makes for one of the most popular day trips from Quito! Just two hours north of Quito, Saturday market days in Otavalo buzz with life, with market stalls spilling out into the streets. , but the market is open on a smaller scale in the Plaza de Ponchos every day.

At the market, you’ll find all kinds of textiles, especially made from alpaca, like blankets, ponchos, and sweaters, as well as home goods, jewelry, leather goods, clothing, and souvenirs. You’ll also find sections selling fresh fruits and vegetables, prepared foods, and live animals – definitely an interesting sight!

Beyond just visiting the market, Otavalo boasts the nearby Laguna Cuicocha – a stunning volcanic crater lake with epic hikes – Cascada de Peguche (Peguche Waterfall), Lago San Pablo (San Pablo Lake) , and more that are all worth seeing!

Best Day Trips From Quito to Otavalo

  • Small Group Otavalo Tour from Quito, Including Market and Cayambe
  • Full-Day Private Tour of Otavalo and Surroundings From Quito

How To Get to Otavalo From Quito

There are three main ways to take an Otavalo day trip from Quito:

  • Take public transport – a greyhound-style bus from Quito to Otavalo
  • Schedule a group tour
  • Schedule a private tour

If you want to take public transportation, you can catch a bus from Quito’s Carcelén bus terminal for around $2 USD . Buses leave every 15-30 minutes, so you’ll have plenty of options. The trip takes about 2 hours.

If you’re planning on visiting on Saturday for the market, taking a tour from Quito is your best option. Public transport can be quite busy to and from Otavalo on market day and often sells out on the weekends on the way back from Otavalo. Plus, you’ll want to arrive early, as the market is best in the morning, making a hassle-free small-group excursion from Quito your best bet on a Saturday.

2. Mitad del Mundo

Easiest Day Trip from Quito

A visit to Mitad del Mundo – literally, “the middle of the world” and the Equator line – is one of the best things to do in Quito , and a must for visitors. Located about 20 – 40 minutes outside of central Quito , this is by far the easiest of the day trips from Ecuador.

At Mitad del Mundo, there are a variety of things to see and do, but primarily you’ll have two options – visiting the monument to the Equator or visiting the Intiñan Museum, which is home to the true equator line.

This large monument is on the site of what was believed to be the true Equator – until GPS proved scientists wrong in the 20th century.

Just a few minutes walk from the monument – on the site of the true equator line – the Intiñan Museum is where to go if you want to actually straddle the equator. You’ll also get to try some fun, campy “experiments” like balancing an egg on a nail, seeing how water flows differently on each side of the equator, and more.

How To Get to Mitad del Mundo From Quito

There are four ways to take a Mitad del Mundo day trip from Quito:

  • Travel independently using public transportation
  • Travel independently in a taxi

Because Mitad del Mundo is just outside of Quito, it’s quite easy to visit on your own using either a taxi or public transportation. Taxis will cost about $15 from central Quito in each direction.

To travel using public transportation, take a public bus to La Ofelia bus station in the north of Quito – many buses travel here, so ask in your accommodation which is most convenient for you to take. In total, it should take 45 minutes – 1 hour, but it will only cost a few dollars.

Mitad del Mundo is even easier to visit as part of a day tour, whether you choose a private excursion or a small group excursion . Many tours of Quito offer a quick stop here, or you can choose a tour just of Mitad del Mundo.

If you’re looking for a tour of Mitad del Mundo and some of Quito’s other best sites , this is one of the best private tours which I always recommend to visitors. It offers great flexibility and fantastic guides and will make your visit to Quito a special one.

3. Cotopaxi

Best Day Trip from Quito for Adventure Travel

Easily one of the most stunning natural features in Ecuador, Cotopaxi Volcano is a snow-capped beauty rising out of the Andes just outside of the city of Quito. Its proximity to Quito makes it a perfect day trip from Quito and, by far, one of the most popular day trips for travelers.

Visits to Cotopaxi National Park usually include touring around the best parts of the park, like Lago Limpiopungo , and taking in the beautiful scenery and wildlife here. Plus, you can hike up to the Jose Rivas Refuge, just below the volcano’s glacier line , for incredible views.

Summiting Cotopaxi is much more challenging, involving full winter gear and crampons, plus an overnight at the refuge. If you’re interested, it is a truly unforgettable experience!

If you love adventure and want to take your trip to Cotopaxi to the next level, consider the Cotopaxi Hiking and Mountain Biking excursion, an incredibly popular activity that involves biking down the volcano! Looking to combine two distinct day trips in one? This Cotopaxi and Quilotoa tour takes you to both Cotopaxi and Quilotoa , arguably two of Ecuador’s most impressive natural destinations.

Best Day Trips From Quito to Cotopaxi

  • Full-Day Small-Group Day Trip to Cotopaxi from Quito
  • Full-Day Private Cotopaxi Volcano Day Trip from Quito
  • Cotopaxi Hiking and Biking Day Trip
  • Cotopaxi and Quilotoa 2-in-1 Day Trip from Quito

How To Get to Cotopaxi From Quito

There are three main ways to take a Cotopaxi day trip from Quito:

  • Take public transport – a greyhound-style bus from Quito to Latacunga, getting off at the Cotopaxi National Park entrance. Read more about public transportation to Cotopaxi in our Quito to Cotopaxi Guide .

While you might save a little money taking public transportation, I generally recommend against it if you have just one day to visit . You can’t walk around the park – just walking from the bus stop to the entrance to the park takes over an hour! – so you’ll have to hire one of the local guides that wait at the bus stop anyway .

With plenty of small group day trip excursions and private day trip excursions from Quito to Cotopaxi – they’re available from almost all the city’s tour companies, you’ll have no trouble finding the experience that is right for you.

4. Quilotoa

Best Day Trip from Quito for a View

Quilotoa is one of the most beautiful destinations in Ecuador, and truly an unforgettable trip. After living in Ecuador for two years and visiting Quilotoa at least five times, I still can’t wait until I have the chance to return.

Quilotoa Crater Lake is actually a volcano – the volcano rim collapsed in on itself centuries ago, leaving behind the stunning blue-green lake you see today. High in the mountains, Quilotoa and the surrounding mountains make up some of the most beautiful scenery in all of the Andes , and the 3-day Quilotoa Loop trek is one of South America’s best hikes.

Quilotoa is in an extremely isolated location high in the Andes, about 3 hours from Quito by car or 4+ hours by bus . It is certainly a drive, but still well worth the visit, even as a day trip from Quito.

Getting to Quilotoa by bus involves taking a bus from Quito to Latacunga and then another bus from Latacunga to Quilotoa. Buses infrequently leave Quilotoa headed back to Latacunga, so it is practically impossible to make it in one day.

If you’re looking for a Quilotoa day trip from Quito, choose a small group excursion or a private excursion if you’re looking for more flexibility. This is a great Quito day trip to choose from – you’ll never forget this truly breathtakingly beautiful destination.

Looking to combine the best day trips from Quito in one? The Quilotoa and Cotopaxi tour takes you to both of these incredible destinations. These are two of Ecuador’s most stunning natural wonders, so this is a perfect excursion if you’re on a tight itinerary.

Best Day Trip From Quito for Families

Located about an hour and a half northwest of Quito, the small town of Mindo is located in the heart of Ecuador’s subtropical Cloud Forest. This unique mix of mountains and jungle located between the Andes and the coast is the perfect place for a day trip from Quito – and a destination families will love.

In Mindo, you can enjoy relaxing and taking in this warm jungle paradise or take part in any of the area’s countless adventure activities. Here you’ll find beautiful and secluded waterfall hikes, incredible ziplining (the best in Ecuador!), river tubing, waterfall repelling (called canyoning) , and more.

You can even tour the local artisanal chocolate makers’ factory and shop, enjoy world-class birdwatching (some of South America’s best!), or visit a butterfly sanctuary with countless species of butterflies . This and more, if you’re looking for a letter less “adventure” but just as much fun.

If you want to travel to Mindo independently, take a bus from Quito La Ofelia bus station in the north of the city – the bus company Flor del Valle has buses directly to Mindo about every hour starting at 8:00 am on weekdays and 7:40 am on weekends. The trip takes about 2 hours and costs $3.10 USD.

If you only have one day to spend in Mindo, I recommend considering a shared group excursion to Mindo or a private excursion if you’re looking for a more personalized experience. There is simply so much to do in Mindo that saving time by choosing an excursion will let you enjoy the town so much more.

If you’re a birdwatcher, consider booking a private, specialized birdwatching excursion from Quito . Even in just one day, you’ll have a fantastic experience in the Cloud Forest.

6. Pululahua

Pululahua is a stunning natural destination, and just a few miles outside of Quito, it also makes for a great day trip or half-day trip from the city. A dormant volcano , Pululahua is now considered a nature reserve and protected environment within Ecuador.

It is one of only two inhabited volcanic craters in the world and is home to a unique cloud forest ecosystem similar to that found in Mindo . Popular activities here include horseback riding and discovering the unique flora and fauna of this cloud forest ecosystem, as well as taking in stunning views over the crater’s rim.

You can visit Pululahua independently or as part of a day trip to Mitad del Mundo. Located just a few miles from Mitad del Mundo, it’s an easy addition to your itinerary, and many small group excursions include a visit here.

Best Excursion and Tours to Pululahua

  • Pululahua Small Group Tour from Quito
  • Pululahua Private Tour from Quito

How To Get to Pululahua From Quito

There are four ways to take a Pululahua day trip from Quito:

  • Schedule a small group tour

To reach Pululahua by bus, travel as you would to Mitad del Mundo. Take one of the many bus lines in Quito that reaches La Ofelia bus terminal, then take the bus that travels to Mitad del Mundo from there. From the Pululahua bus stop, you’ll need to walk about 20 minutes to reach the entrance to the park, which is why most visitors negotiate a taxi to the entrance of the park from Mitad del Mundo.

Just a few miles from Mitad del Mundo, many small group excursions and private excursions of Mitad del Mundo include a stop-off at the overlook into Pululahua’s crater. Alternatively, book a private excursion to spend more time exploring the crater itself, which is a fantastic and fascinating escape from Quito.

7. Pasochoa

Located in Quito’s Valle de los Chillos and just across Cotopaxi National Park from Cotopaxi Volcano, Pasochoa is a long-extinct volcano that is a favorite hiking destination outside of Quito.

While many hikers use Pasochoa as a climb to acclimate to Ecuador’s altitude and practice for harder summits, like Cotopaxi and Chimborazo, don’t let that stop you from visiting Pasochoa if you’re more of a beginner. The hike is doable as long as you’re reasonably physically fit, and though long, it’s totally achievable for beginners.

Hiking the Pasochoa summit is a moderate hike of about 7 hours and 12km in length, with a clearly marked path. Even if you don’t want to make the push all the way to the summit, there are several trails along the mountain you can choose, marked well and identified at the trailhead.

You’ll see the gorgeous mountainous landscape on your hike, including Cotopaxi herself, and feel like you’re exploring Ecuador’s countryside as you pass near small farms and pastures. If you’re looking for the perfect hiking or trekking excursion outside of Quito, Pasochoa is a great option!

Best Day Trips From Quito to Pasochoa

  • Private Guided Hike to Pasochoa from Quito

How To Get to Pasochoa From Quito

There are three ways to take a Pasochoa day trip from Quito:

  • Hike on your own and take public transportation
  • Schedule a group tour from The Secret Garden Cotopaxi

If you want to hike on your own, take a bus from the Playón de la Marin bus station near the Historic Center of Quito to the town of Amaguaña (about an hour to an hour and a half drive) .

Get off in the main plaza and get one of the white and green pick-up trucks for hire to bring you to the start of the hike. You can coordinate with the driver to pick you up once you’re done, too.

While it is possible to get to Pasochoa and hike in one day without a guide, it would be a lot of bus travel, and I doubt you’d have time to return to Quito before nightfall. If you only have one day set aside in your itinerary, I recommend scheduling a private trek with a guide from Quito .

If your itinerary allows for an overnight, I definitely recommend a stay at The Secret Garden Cotopaxi – they organize the best group treks up to Pasochoa!

Don’t head out on your adventure without comprehensive travel insurance! Good travel insurance may cover lost or stolen gear, medical emergencies, delayed or canceled flights, and more.  Check out the policies available from  SafetyWing or compare plans using  Visitors Coverage .

rucu pichincha

8. Rucu Pichincha Volcano

Towering over the city of Quito, the Pichincha Volcano is one of the city’s most important landmarks and geographical features . The volcano has several peaks, including the Guagua Pichincha (which means baby Pichincha) peak and Rucu Pichincha (meaning old Pichincha – the older of the volcano’s peaks) peak.

While it is possible to hike both peaks, the Rucu Pichincha hike has gotten much more popular in recent years after the TelefériQo cable car was opened, as the top of the TelefériQo is the best place to start the hike.

Overall this hike is considered moderate to challenging. Both the extreme altitude – 15,413 ft (4,698 meters) at the summit of the peak – and sections of scrambling with a lot of exposure add to the difficulty.

Make sure to check out the All Trails: Rucu Pichincha Volcano hiking guide for the details of the hike if you’re interested! However, be aware that the website maps the distance from the bottom of the mountain, not the top of the TelefériQo.

Best Day Trips From Quito to Rucu Pichincha

  • Rucu Pichincha Small Group Guided Hike from Quito
  • Rucu Pichincha Private Guided Hike from Quito

How To Get to Rucu Pichincha From Quito

There are three ways to take a Rucu Pichincha day trip from Quito:

  • Hike independently from the top of the TelefériQo
  • Schedule a small group guided trek
  • Schedule a private guided trek

Because the hike starts at the top of the TelefériQo, it’s easy for hikers to get here independently and complete the trek on their own , making this the perfect hike for you if you would like to go without a guide.

However, it is probably a good idea to secure a guide if you can. There are some challenging sections with scrambling required, and the guide can show you the best route for your level of preparation. A small group guided trek is a great, inexpensive option though a flexible, private guided trek of Rucu Pichincha Volcano is another option worth considering if you want to go at your own pace.

papallacta

9. Papallacta Hot Springs

If you’re looking to relax and rest during the perfect escape from the city, a Papallacta day trip from Quito may be exactly what you need. Located about 1.5 hours east of Quito, Papallacta is home to natural thermal springs , heated by Ecuador’s Route of the Volcanoes.

Visitors can enjoy access to these lovely hot springs for just $9, which includes a variety of hot springs and pools, plus a recreation complex and restaurants serving delicious food. While the waters from the hot springs here have been channeled into pools – they’re not among the natural rocks of the mountains as they once were – the experience and mountain views are impressive.

If you’re looking to truly unwind and pamper yourself, you can spend a little more ($23 USD) and enjoy the more exclusive thermal pools and spa services within the Termas de Papallacta Hotel & Spa .

No matter what you choose, Papallacta is a fantastic getaway from Quito, too overlooked by most travelers! Consider this your perfect Quito day trip.

Best Day Trips From Quito to Papallacta

  • Small Group Day Trip – Quito to Papallacta Hot Springs
  • Private Day Trip – Quito to Papallacta Hot Springs

How To Get to Papallacta From Quito

There are three ways to take a Papallacta day trip from Quito:

  • Travel independently by bus
  • Schedule a small group excursion
  • Schedule a private excursion

If you want to travel to Papallacta independently, you’ll start by taking a bus from Quitumbe bus station in the south of Quito. You can choose a bus that goes directly to Papallacta on the Baños Cooperativa bus line or any bus headed to Baeza or Tena – you’ll just need to let the bus driver know to drop you off at Papallacta.

Tickets cost about $2 USD, and the trip is about 2 hours. From the entrance to Papallacta, you can take a five- to ten-minute cab ride up the hill to the entrance of the thermal springs.

Affordable small group day trips to Papallacta and private day trips to Papallacta , as well as overnight stays, are the most comfortable ways to travel to this beloved cloud forest destination from Quito. You can select whether you want to visit the public thermal springs or the fancier thermal springs and spa once you arrive.

antisana volcano

10. Antisana Ecological Reserve

Snowcapped Antisana Volcano – by far one of the most impressive volcanoes in Ecuador – is the centerpiece of Antisana Ecological Reserve , hidden among dramatic Andean landscapes on the outskirts of Quito.

With nearby Cotopaxi stealing much of the thunder of Antisana Ecological Reserve, this stunningly beautiful destination feels totally off the beaten path, perfect for travelers looking for something a little different from their Quito day trips. Known for its beautiful and untouched flora and impressive fauna – including the Andean Condor – there are plenty of reasons to choose Antisana as an ideal escape from Quito.

Hiking along the shores of the high-altitude Laguna Micacocha, spotting the rare, awe-inspiring Andean Condor, and enjoying local eats at the reserve’s refuge are all highlights of a trip.

Best Day Trips From Quito to Antisana

  • Private Day Tour: Antisana Volcano and Condor Watching
  • Small Group Tour to Antisana Ecological Reserve

How To Get to Antisana From Quito

There are three ways to take an Antisana day trip from Quito:

  • Travel independently by taxi

The size of Antisana Ecological Reserve and the lack of a bus route that takes visitors directly into and within the park means that you’ll likely need to take a taxi from Quito or a nearby town like Sangolquí in order to access the park if you don’t have transportation of your own.

With this in mind, it’s much easier to book a relatively affordable small group excursion or private excursion to Antisana should you want to visit. Not only is transportation to and throughout the park included, but you’ll be able to travel with guides who know the park like the back of their hand.

Quito, formerly known as San Francisco de Quito, was founded on the ruins of an Incan city. In 1978, this huge city was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Quito has some of the best-preserved historic centers. This city has a rich pre-Colombian history and has a lot to offer to tourists. Here are the best day trips from Quito :

La Mitad del Mundo

This enormous trapezoidal monument commemorates the exact location where Charles Marie de la Condamine, an explorer of French origin, calculated the earth’s equatorial line in the 18th Century. The name translates to “the middle of the world.”

La Mitad del Mundo is Quito’s tourist Mecca. Visitors come here to take pictures at the equator, where the northern and the southern hemispheres meet. This popular destination is always crowded, so be prepared, especially between June and September.

There’s an elevator that goes up to the top of the monument. This allows you to have great views of the surroundings. The great thing about the 30-meter-tall monument is that it’s accessible to everyone.

The former runway is what makes the park’s design so beautiful. It has now been painted and converted into a recreation site which comprises play structures for kids and lanes for cycling.

Within the park, there are more than a thousand trees as well as a man-made pond.

3. Quilotoa Lagoon

Quilotoa Lagoon, Ecuador

Breathtaking sights await you at the Quilotoa Lagoon.

This lagoon was formed as a result of the collapse of a now-extinct volcano whose 3-kilometre wide (and 250m deep) crater was filled with water. The volcanic mountain collapsed about 600 years ago after a catastrophic eruption which was followed by a period of dormancy. The lagoon waters are green in color, thanks to the dissolved volcanic minerals. The surface of the lake is located 3,500m above sea level

Situated about a 3-hour drive from the southwestern end of Quito, Quilotoa is a common day-trip destination that is growing in popularity.

6. Pasochoa Forest Reserve

Pasochoa Volcano

The main reason for the reserve’s preservation is the uneven surface, which can make accessibility a challenge. The forest was declared a protected area in the year 1982 and later declared a Wild Life Refuge in 1996.

Today, the Pasochoa Forest Reserve is one of the few remaining original Andean Forests. The Pasochoa is run by Fundacion Natura which is in charge of all the conservation projects and research projects.

7. Pululahua Volcano Crater

Pululahua Volcano Crater

Pululahua’s last eruption happened about 2,500 years ago and resulted in a crater that is full of fertile soil. This makes the crater one of the only two that is cultivated by its 120 inhabitants. In the middle of the 34 square kilometer crater lays a lava dome which is 500m high. The dome is covered in lush cloud forest vegetation and offers excellent views from the summit.

Pululahua in Quichua means “smoke of cloud of water.” The name came about due to the fog that covers the crater every day at around noon. Technically, it never rains in Pululahua so the fog provides the water for the crops grown here.

The best time to visit is in the morning hours before the fog rolls in. This way you’ll be able to enjoy the fantastic views and take pictures.

7 Best Day Trips and Multi-Day Trips from Quito

We’re going to start the list with locations that are closest to Quito, before adding destinations that could be more of a multi-day trip rather than a simple one-day adventure.

1. TeleferiQo and Rucu Pichincha

Probably the easiest day trip you can do from Quito is to take its popular cable car, the TeleferiQo, up to Pichincha volcano.

The TeleferiQo runs from the northwest edge of the city centre all the way up to a lookout called Cruz Loma on the east side of Pichincha volcano. It only opened in 2005 and it’s considered one of the highest cable cars in the world.

Once you’ve enjoyed the views during the nearly 20-minute long gondola ride, you can then wander around the mountainside and admire the views of the surrounding volcanoes. There’s a perfectly positioned swing, where you can quite literally swing above Quito. You can also just take a stroll around the area or, if you’re a big hiker, you can climb Rucu Pichincha. Make sure to do the climb during the morning and only if you’ve already acclimatised.

If you decide to summit Rucu Pichincha, then it’ll be a full day trip. However, if you just want to enjoy the views from Cruz Loma, then the TeleferiQo is the perfect half-day trip from the city. This also means that you’ll have some time to explore other parts of Quito too, such as La Floresta neighbourhood or La Carolina Park. You can find more details about these areas in our 3-day Quito guide .

2. Mitad del Mundo, Quito’s Equator Line

Another popular and easy day trip from Quito is to visit Ciudad Mitad del Mundo (Middle of the World City). Mitad del Mundo is the best place to visit the equator line, since it’s the only location in the world where it runs through a big city.

Located around 25km to the north of Quito’s centre, Mitad del Mundo is home to an impressive monument dedicated to the equator as well as a big, bright yellow line marking the ‘equator’.

Now, it’s worth noting that this yellow line isn’t actually the real equator. Thanks to modern GPS, it turns out that the initial measurements taken back in the 1700s were off by about 240m. Today, there’s a site just north of Mitad del Mundo called Intinan Site Museum where you can see the ‘real’ equator line. Although, as it turns out, this one also might be slightly off.

Nevertheless, both sites are well worth a visit if you want to learn a bit more about Ecuador and the equator line. Not to mention all the creative photos you can take standing between the two hemispheres.

Located about 90km to the north of Quito, Otavalo is one of the most popular day trips from the city.

Situated at 2,532 m (8,307 ft) above sea level and surrounded by impressive volcanoes, lakes, and waterfalls, Otavalo has a lot to offer its visitors. However, the main reason many people come to Otavalo is the indigenous market, which is considered the largest of its kind on the continent.

The majority of Otavalo’s population is made up of indigenous people, who are famous for their textiles. You can browse through a large variety of handmade items from clothes, accessories, and jewellery to other souvenirs. The market is open every day, although the main day is Saturday, when it expands beyond Otavalo’s Plaza de Ponchos.

During your visit, you’ll notice that a lot of Otavaleños will be wearing their traditional attire. Women are normally dressed in beautifully embroidered white blouses and dark skirts. Their main accessories are gold beaded necklaces and red beaded bracelets. You’ll see men in white, calf-length trousers, poncho’s and a hat.

We actually spent 2 days in Otavalo but most people would only visit as part of a day trip. Depending on how much time you have in Ecuador, if you can, we recommend spending at least one night in Otavalo.

4. Quilotoa Lake

One of the furthest places you can visit on a day trip from Quito is Quilotoa Lake (Laguna Quilotoa). It has to be one of the most beautiful crater lakes in the country. Located about a 3-hour drive to the south-west of Quito, just to the west of the city of Latacunga, Quilotoa is the westernmost volcano in the Ecuadorian Andes.

Its 3 km wide and 250m deep caldera lake was formed after the volcano erupted in 1280. The lake has a beautiful green and turquoise colour which comes from the dissolved volcanic minerals from its past eruption.

The most popular way to visit Quilotoa Lake is by joining a day tour from Quito. On the tour, you’ll normally get the chance to descend down to the shore of the lake, where you can rent a kayak or just enjoy the scenery. The tours normally include a few more stops along the way, such as at viewpoints and local markets.

If you’d like to spend a bit longer at the lake and would like to do some hiking, then you can plan a multi-day trip to Quilotoa. That way, you can complete the Quilotoa Lake rim hike which would take you the majority of the day.

In addition, if you love trekking then you can consider completing one of the best multi-day self-guided hikes in the country: the Quilotoa Loop. This 3 to 5 day long hike will take you through the stunning Ecuadorian countryside before finishing at the crater lake.

5. Mindo Cloud Forest

Another favoured location to the north of Quito, where you’ll find plenty of both local and foreign visitors, is called Mindo Cloud Forest. The small village of Mindo is located about 1,250 m (4,100 ft) above sea level in a lush valley to the northwest of Quito.

The valley is home to the Mindo-Nambillo Ecological Reserve, and within the reserve is the beautiful Mindo-Nambillo Cloud Forest, covering over 19,000 hectares. The cloud forest and reserve are known for their biological diversity and countless natural attractions.

You can chase waterfalls along the popular Ruta de las Cascadas, which leads you to 7 stunning waterfalls through the cloud forest. Mindo is also a popular place amongst bird watchers thanks to the rare bird living here called the Cock of the Rock. You can visit a butterfly sanctuary if bird watching isn’t your thing, go on a chocolate tour or do something more adventurous, such as a night walk in the cloud forest.

There are plenty of different types of one-day tours offered from Quito . You can book onto some dedicated hiking tours or more adventurous ones that offer zip-lining and tubing. However, if you want to make the most of your visit, we recommend spending at least a night or two in Mindo.

6. Cotopaxi National Park

One of the most popular places to visit in Ecuador is Cotopaxi National Park. It is the second largest national park in the country and also home to the second highest peak: Cotopaxi volcano. The nearly symmetrical cone shaped active volcano is definitely the park’s main attraction.

Located to the south of Quito, there are quite a few tours offering day trips from the city. There’s plenty to do in the park, from hiking up to José Rivas Refuge on Cotopaxi volcano itself at 4,864 m (15,958 ft), or even going up higher to the glacier at 5,000m (16,400 ft) above sea level. You can mountain bike down the side of Cotopaxi too, which is definitely an activity you’ll never forget. In case you’re after something a bit more relaxing, you can just explore the park on horseback.

Whilst taking a day trip to Cotopaxi is perfect for those short on time, if you can, we recommend planning a multi-day visit. There’s so much more to do in the national park, from climbing other dormant volcanos such as Pasochoa or Rumiñahui to even summiting Cotopaxi itself.

7. Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve in the Amazon Rainforest

Visiting the Amazon Rainforest in Ecuador is definitely not a day trip. In fact, it’ll take almost a full day just to get to your accommodation. However, if you’re visiting Ecuador, then you really cannot skip spending a few nights deep in the Amazon Jungle.

Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve is located in the northeast corner of the Ecuadorian Amazon. It’s a biodiversity hotspot with hundreds of species of birds, fish, reptiles, amphibians, and mammals calling it home. There are also over 12,000 species of plants in the reserve.

You can normally choose between a 3-day, 4-day or 5-day tour depending on how long you can spare. If you’d like to get the most out of your visit, we recommend booking either the 4 or 5-day tour. This way you’ll be able to do all the main activities Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve has to offer.

Activities normally include sunset canoe rides, swimming in the lagoon, and nightly canoe rides to spot wildlife such as tarantulas, snakes and caiman. You’ll also have the chance to hike through the jungle during the day and at night. Most tours will also offer a visit to one of the indigenous communities to learn about their way of life, and you’ll also get to meet their shaman.

If you only have time for one multi-day trip from Quito, then the Ecuadorian Amazon Rainforest should be high on your list.

7 Best Day Trips From Quito, Ecuador

best weekend trips from quito

  • Central and South America
  • Destinations

Quito, Ecuador, was the first location in the world recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. With South America’s largest and best-preserved Colonial center, there are a myriad of attractions vying for your attention.

If you have an extra day on your itinerary, consider venturing beyond the city’s borders to experience even more of this country’s rich culture and biodiversity. You will be rewarded with unexpected memories that will be cherished and long remembered.

Here are seven of our favorites.

Pro Tip: While intrepid travelers can try tackling these excursions on their own, we suggest letting a professional tour operator handle all the details so you can relax and enjoy the day.

Mitad del Mundo, the monument at the equatorial line in Quito, Ecuador

1. Mitad Del Mundo

Ecuador got its name because the equator runs right through the country. Less than an hour outside of Quito, the Mitad del Mundo (“Middle of the World”) attraction is a quick, fun trip with unique appeal.

Snap a photo while you are straddling the equator with a foot in each hemisphere. Amaze yourself as you balance an egg on the end of a nail. Go inside the Middle of the World Monument and virtual reality planetarium.

Did you know chocolate originated in Ecuador? Check out the Cocoa Museum to learn all about it and sample some of the world’s best chocolate.

Here’s some surprising news, especially if you’ve been overindulging in the fresh and flavorful food during your visit to Ecuador. Because of the combination of gravity and centrifugal force at the equator, you weigh as much as 2 pounds less than at other places. Not a viable long-term weight loss program, but still…

Thermal pool at Termas Papallacta

2. Termas Papallacta

Looking for a totally rejuvenating experience? Join the Quiteños (as citizens of Quito are called) who have been flocking to Termas Papallacta for over 30 years to soak in the resort’s volcanic thermal pools. Surrounded by impossibly green Andes Mountains only an hour outside of the city, Termas Papallacta feels a world away from hectic civilization. The minerals found in thermal water have been known for centuries to stimulate blood circulation, ease joint and muscle pain, and improve chronic skin conditions.

Choose from two daily admission options (half price for 65+): $10 for the general pool complex or $23 for exclusive smaller pools with special features at the spa.

Whichever you select, the soothing therapeutic waters and serene, secluded environment are guaranteed to induce a state of profound relaxation. Deepen your tranquility by opting for the spa’s signature chocolate body wrap.

Try traditional Ecuadorian cuisine like locro de papa (potato soup with avocado and cheese) at the Sunfo restaurant, which overlooks the Spa pools and nearby mountains.

Stay Overnight

Too blissed out to leave? Book a cozy cabin complete with a fireplace and heated floors. Private, intimate, beautifully landscaped pools right outside your door are available 24 hours a day for overnight guests.

Mindo cloud forest

A trip to Mindo is an exceptional experience you must book if you are a nature lover. Located 2 hours northwest of Quito in a cloud forest ecosystem, this tiny village offers a supersized lineup of outdoor activities.

Situated in a valley with lush tropical mountains in all directions, Mindo’s spectacular scenery alone is worth the drive. Rivers, waterfalls, hummingbirds, butterflies, and 550 species of birds are everywhere.

Book excursions through Sandy Patiño at Bird Paradise Tours for a flawless itinerary. Thrill seekers can climb into a Tarzan swing or go white-water rafting, ziplining, and canyoning. More leisurely pursuits include hiking, coffee and chocolate tours, orchid gardens, and butterfly sanctuaries.

Birdwatching is the #1 activity in Mindo. Because of the early morning start required for optimal viewing, an overnight stay is necessary. We highly recommend a completely unique accommodation a short distance outside of town. The view, amenities, and food are so special that you won’t want to leave!

Colorful hand-woven textiles at Otavalo Market

Find the perfect gifts and souvenirs to take home from your trip to Ecuador at the world-famous Otavalo Market. Known to locals as Plaza de los Ponchos, this is the largest Indigenous market in South America.

Ancestors from the area have been weavers since pre-Incan times. While colorful alpaca textile products are the main attraction, almost any artisan product you can imagine is on display — embroidery, jewelry, Panama hats, guitars, leather items, paintings, and so much more.

Although the market is open 365 days a year from 7 a.m.–6 p.m., try to go on Wednesday or Saturday when the most vendors, and the biggest crowds, are there. Take your time, compare items at different booths, then gently haggle (it’s expected) to get the best prices.

Worn out after all that shopping? Treat yourself to a stay at Hotel Otavalo , the town’s only luxury boutique hotel. The almost 100-year-old building has been completely renovated with a harmonious blend of old and new.

Cotopaxi National Park

5. Cotopaxi National Park

At an elevation of over 19,000 feet, Cotopaxi is the highest active volcano in Ecuador and one of the highest in the world. A 2-hour drive from Quito, this magnificent snow-capped peak is one of Ecuador’s most iconic landmarks and a must-see day trip.

While climbing activities have been halted due to recent eruptions, as of this writing, the Cotopaxi National Park is open each day from 8 a.m.–3 p.m. Enjoy hikes tailored to your needs, beginner-to-expert-level horseback rides, and biking. Spot Andean gulls, hummingbirds, and even wild horses at Limpiopungo Lagoon, a stunning glacial lake at the base of the Cotopaxi Volcano.

Secret Garden Cotopaxi offers a variety of one-of-a-kind accommodations, from glamping to “birdhouses” to hobbit homes. Three meals are included daily, as well as assistance with the booking of many activities offered in the area.

Edd and Cynthia at Quilotoa Lake

6. Quilotoa

An off-the-beaten-path destination well-worth visiting is Quilotoa Lake , a 3-hour drive from Quito. The 2-mile-wide lake was formed after the summit of an active volcano collapsed following an eruption in 1280, which is considered the most violent on the planet in the last 1,000 years.

The unusual emerald green tint of the water is due to a high concentration of volcanic minerals. The color changes throughout the day with the movement of the sun.

Dress warmly for this excursion because, at an elevation of 13,000 feet, the weather at Quilotoa is quite chilly. Breathtaking views and fantastic photos are guaranteed from a lookout platform above the lake.

Walk down to the water only if you are in great shape. Don’t be fooled by the easy half-hour trek along the sandy path on the way down. The hike back up is extremely challenging due to the steep slope and thin air from the high altitude.

Edd getting drenched by the Devil’s Cauldron waterfall in Baños

Extreme sport enthusiasts flock to Baños, the adventure capital of Ecuador. Think ziplining, class-IV-plus white-water rafting, canyoning, rock climbing, and bungee jumping off a bridge over a roaring river.

Since Baños is a 3-hour drive from Quito, most of these exciting excursions are not possible on a day trip. However, this recommended tour is well-worth taking. The views on the way, including a quick stop for pics of the Cotopaxi volcano, are breathtaking.

High above the town at La Casa del Arbol, you’ll hop on a swing and go way out over the valley for a thrilling view of Tungurahua Volcano. Then, get up close and personal with the powerful Devil’s Cauldron waterfall. It is an absolute beast!

Add another dimension to your Baños visit with an overnight stay at Samari Spa Resort . The hotel’s history dates back over 300 years to the Jesuit community and much of the original architecture has been maintained. After all of those adventures, you will appreciate restorative treatments available at their onsite spa.

Cotopaxi Volcano on a day trip from Quito

Quito, the capital of Ecuador, serves as a gateway to a myriad of diverse landscapes, Andean wildlife, and cultural experiences. For those eager to venture beyond the city limits, a plethora of captivating day trips await. In this guide, I’m going to share with you 12 unforgettable day trips from Quito, each offering a unique blend of nature, history, culture, and local charm.

This Quito guide is based on my 6 months traveling around Ecuador and working remotely from Quito and the Ruta del Sol. For more travel ideas for the country, visit this Ecuador Travel Guide .

How to Get to These Quito Day Trip Destinations

Let’s talk about the different 3 different ways you can get to these popular Quito day trips:

Rent a Car:

The quickest and most flexible way to get to these 12 Ecuador destinations is by renting a car and driving yourself. You can rent a car through Discover Car and pick it up at the Mariscal Sucre Airport . Just be aware that driving in Ecuador can be stressful. You’ve got a lot of windy, narrow mountain roads.

Take the Public Bus:

The cheapest way to do most of these 12 Quito day trips is by public bus. This is how I got to Papallacta , Mindo, and Baños. However, not all of these day trips can be done by public bus—Cotopaxi and Antisana are best done with a guided tour.

There are 4 bus stations in Quito where you can catch a bus to take you to these popular Ecuador destinations .

  • Terminal Terrestre Quitumbe (Quito Sur) – This very clean, well-organized, and safe bus station has buses going to Papallacta, Latacunga (Quilotoa), Banos and most other popular places in Ecuador like Cuenca, Manta, Tena, and the Amazon. The Metro and Trolebus C connect to Quitumbe, making it easy for people staying in Quito’s historic center , San Blas, La Marisal, and La Carolina to get to Quitumbe. ( Map )
  • Terminal La Ofelia – This small station in the northern part of Quito has buses that go to Mitad del Mundo, Mindo, and Cayambe. Take an Uber or taxi to get to this terminal and give yourself at least 30 minutes to get there. ( Map )
  • Terminal Caracelen (Quito Norte) – This terminal in the far northern part of Quito has buses going to Otavalo . Take an Uber or taxi to get to this terminal. It’s quite far so give yourself plenty of time to get there. ( Map )
  • Rio Coca Terminal – This small terminal in the northern part of Quito has buses that go to Cumbaya, where you can switch to another bus going to Papallacta and the Cayambe-Coca National Park entrance. You can take the Ecovia trolley bus to get to the terminal. The Ecovia stops in the historic center, San Blas, and La Mariscal. ( Map )

Take a Guided Tour:

The least stressful way but also the least flexible way to take these Quito day trips is with organized tours.

Tours cost from US$15 – $250 depending on where you’re going and how many people are on your tour. Sometimes tours will charge more for solo travelers.

There are also tons of tours available, so it can be hard to know the best one. Luckily, in this guide to the best Quito tours , you don’t have to spend too much time picking one.

The most trustworthy and helpful websites for booking tours in Quito :

  • Get Your Guide

Tours in Quito have a habit of canceling when they don’t get enough people signed up or when the guide just doesn’t feel like giving you a tour. This happened to me on two tours in Quito : a Quito street food tour (canceled twice!) AND a Quito walking tour (canceled once and changed the tour time on me at the last minute!). I had booked them directly through the tour company’s website. Big mistake because I’m not sure if I would have been able to get my money back if the tours hadn’t gone through. I was lucky in that I was spending many days in Quito and could change tour dates. That’s why you should always book through a trusted site like Get Your Guide or Viator . Get Your Guide helped me twice in contacting the tour company that was doing my Otavalo tour and Mitad del Mundo tour wouldn’t respond to my text messages about my pickup time.

12 BEST Day Trips from Quito

One of the best things to do in Quito is to take a day trip to the surrounding parks and towns. Some of them can easily be done by bus, while for others it’s better to go on a tour to make the trip worth your time and to see the best attractions. Here are the 12 best day trips from Quito.

  • Cotopaxi National Park
  • Quilotoa Lagoon
  • Antisana Reserve
  • Cayambe-Coca Reserve
  • Cotacachi-Cayapas Reserve
  • Mitad del Mundo
  • Pululahua Reserve

1.      Cotopaxi Day Trip

smoke coming out of the top of Cotopaxi Volcano

Distance from Quito: 80 kilometers (50 miles) from Quito (historic center). By car, it should take 1 hour and 15 minutes.

Quito’s most popular day trip is Cotopaxi National Park. The park is home to Cotopaxi Volcano, one of the world’s highest active volcanoes. Visitors can hike, bike, or horseback ride while enjoying breathtaking views of the Andean landscape.

What can you do at Cotopaxi National Park?

  • Hike Cotopaxi Volcano
  • Hike around Limpiopungo Lagoon
  • Spot wildlife like the Andean Condor or the Andean fox
  • Admire the surreal páramo landscape
  • Go horseback riding How to get to Cotopaxi?

How can you get to Cotopaxi from Quito?

The best way to do a Cotopaxi day trip from Quito is by car or an organized tour from Quito . The worst way to see Cotopaxi is by public bus . Sometimes the park rangers at Cotopaxi say you must have a guide to enter the park, but sometimes they don’t.

Let’s take a closer look at the different ways of getting to Cotopaxi:

By Car to Cotopaxi:

You need a 4-wheel drive (4WD) car to get to Cotopaxi as the roads are very rough the closer you get to the park and inside the park. You can rent a car from Discover Cars .

By Bus to Cotopaxi:

Getting to Cotopaxi by public bus is a big headache and, in the end, rather expensive . You take a bus to the closest town to Cotopaxi, Machachi. Then you need to get a taxi to the park, which is going to cost you a lot. Finally, once you reach the park entrance, you have to hike for a long time to get to the volcano or pay the taxi driver more money.

Sometimes park officials will force you to hire a guide , saying that it’s not possible to visit the park without one. This is technically not true. But…

I met someone who visited the park this way. She regretted it as it was a big hassle and in the end, it cost her more than a tour would have (about US$100). Because it took her so much time to get to the park, she had little time to see the park’s attractions.

If I still haven’t convinced you not to take a bus to Cotopaxi, go to Quitumbe station for buses to Machachi.

By Tour to Cotopaxi:

The first is to head to a viewpoint overlooking the lake and then hike down to the shore where you can take a kayak or canoe trip on the lake.

The second is to do the ambitious and beautiful Quilotoa Loop, which is a hike around the lake, stopping off at different indigenous villages located along the rim of the crater. The drive from Quito takes around 3-4 hours, and you can hike around the crater or take a boat on the lake.

If you’re brave and stubborn or just on a tight budget, leave Quito around 7:00 am.

You’ll need to first take a bus from Quitumbe Station in Quito to the city of Latacunga. Buses leave every 10 minutes and cost US$2.50 . It takes 1.5 to 2 hours to get to Latacunga .

Otavalo is one of the most popular day trips from Quito. The northern highland town is famous for its vibrant indigenous market. The stalls in the market are brimming with colorful textiles, handmade crafts, and traditional Andean souvenirs.

What can you do in Otavalo?

  • Shop at the handicraft market at Plaza de Poncho

How can you get to Otavalo?

The best ways to get to do this Quito day trip is by public bus or by an organized tour . The bus drops you off close to the market. Tours to Otavalo often included other stops along the way like Cayambe or Cuicocha that make the tours so worth it! However, the car is probably the worst way to get to Otavalo because you’ve got to deal with finding parking on market day.

By Car to Otavalo:

It’s an easy drive along the Northern Pan-American Highway. BUT you’ve got to then find a safe place to park your car. If you’re not going to other places like Peguche or Cuicocha, then leave the car at your hotel.

By Bus to Otavalo:

You can easily catch a bus to Otavalo from Terminal Terrestre Caracelén (also called Quito Norte) in Quito. Buses leave hourly and cost around US$3.50 . It takes 2 hours to get to Otavalo. You can check the bus schedule here .

Give yourself plenty of time to get to this bus station.

The bus drops you off at the bus terminal in downtown Otavalo. The station is just a few blocks from the Plaza de Ponchos , the handicraft market that tourists flock to on Saturdays.

By Tour to Otavalo:

Several Quito tours go to the Otavalo market. The tour below is the one I took and I was 100% happy with it. However, on our way back to Quito, there was a serious traffic jam on the highway and we had to take 2 long crazy detours to get back to Quito. It was quite an adventure and we didn’t get back until after 10:00 pm! Luckily, the tour guide and driver were kind enough to drop everyone off at the door of their hotel instead of at the designated drop-off points around the city.

There are two entrances to Cayambe-Coca National Park.

  • For those wishing to climb the volcano , you need to get to Ruales-Oleas-Bergé Refuge , which is 27 kilometers from the town of Cayambe on a rough road that requires a 4WD. A cooperative might take you there from Cayambe but I hear they charge US$60. The Refuge is a basic mountain lodge that you can stay overnight in and have meals.
  • The best entrance point for those who just want to hike is 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) from the back of the Papallacta Hot Spring Resort . This is how I accessed the Park. Here the trails range from easy to challenging and from a few hours to multiple days. You’ll find forests, lakes, waterfalls, and the páramo landscape. Read my guide on getting to Papallacta by bus .

If you leave Quito in the morning by either bus or car, you easily complete many of the hiking trails that start at the Papallacta Hot Springs. Some trails take 1 to 3 hours while other trails take 6 to 8 hours to finish.

There are no tours that specifically do just the Cayambe-Coca Ecological Reserve. But if you do a Papallacta Hot Springs Tour, you can probably forego the hot springs and do a short hike at Cayambe-Coca Park, instead.

The reserve boasts rich biodiversity, featuring diverse flora and fauna, making it a haven for nature enthusiasts and bird watchers.

Warning: the crater is often covered in clouds so it’s sometimes difficult to see it.

What can you do at Pululahua Geobotanical Reserve?

  • Hike 1.7 kilometers (1 mile) down a steep trail into the crater (90 minutes)
  • Stunning views of the landscape and caldera
  • Visit the Temple of Sun, a re-creation of an Inca temple

How to get to Pululahua Geobotanical Reserve?

The best way to get to Pululahua is by car or bus. Not many tours have Pululahua on their Quito itinerary .

By Car to Pululahua:

Drive to the town of San Antonio. You’ll pass by Mitad del Mundo. There’s a parking lot at the Reserve.

By Bus to Pululahua:

First, take a bus from Terminal La Ofelia or a public bus from the historic center to San Antonio. The bus will pass by Mitad del Mundo (Middle of the World). Get off here and then walk over 1 kilometer or take a taxi to Reserva Geobotanical Pululahua. It will take 1.5 to 2 hours to get to the lookout point of the crater from the historic center.

By Tour to Pululahua:

A few tours combine a trip to Pululahua with other Quito attractions:

(1) Mitad del Muno + Pululahua Crater

DURATION: 6 hours | RATING: 4.5/5 | BOOK YOUR TOUR: Get Your Guide

On this small group tour, you’ll first stop at Mitad del Mundo . After that, you’ll head to the Pululahua Geobotanical Reserve .

(2) Mindo Tour with Pululahua Crater

DURATION: 10 hours | RATING: 5/5 | BOOK YOUR TOUR: Viator

This Mindo tour does a stop at the Pululahua Geobotanical Reserve on its way to Mindo.

Quito Travel Guide & FAQs

When should i visit quito.

The temperature in Quito is the same all year round (a high of 66-68 degrees Fahrenheit and a low of 47-49 degrees Fahrenheit.) Even though it’s at the equator, the city is at such a high elevation that it never gets hot.

Quito has two rainy seasons :

  • March – May with April being the rainiest
  • October to November

The best time to visit Quito is from June to August as these are the driest months .

How long should I spend in Quito?

I would spend at least 3 days in Quito . In that way, you can see the major attractions, get a feel for the city without feeling rushed, try some of its delicious Ecuadorian food , and explore a less touristy neighborhood.

An overview of my recommended Quito itinerary:

Day 1: Wander around the historic center and do this walking tour (any order).

Day 2: Explore a less touristy neighborhood of Quito with this street food tour . You can read about my review of the Quito street food tour here. End the day at Panecillo.

Day 2: Take the cable car to Pichincha Volcano and stand on the equator at Middle of the World with this tour .

For more information on this itinerary, check out my full Quito itinerary guide .

You can add day trips from Quito on days 4, 5, and 6.

Day 4: Take a day trip to Otavalo with this tour that will also take you to Cayambe, Cotacachi, and Cuicocha.

Day 5: Do another day trip from Quito to Cotopaxi and Qilotoa doing this tour .

Day 6: Rest your weary travel legs at the Papallacta Hot Springs using these instructions on getting to Papallacta

Where should I stay in Quito?

best weekend trips from quito

I recommend staying in the historic center (also called Old Town) for its beauty, culture, food, and convenience.

The best website for booking hotels in Quito is Booking.com . They usually have the best selection and the best rates.

I wrote an article on the best places to stay in Quito . But for those who want a quick recommendation of my favorite hotels in Quito , here it is:

BEST HOSTEL: Viajero Quito Hostel

BEST HOTELS UNDER US$40: Traveler’s House ,   TERRA PREMIUM & Posada del Maple

BEST HOTELS US$40 – $100: Friends Hotel & Rooftop & Chakana Hotel Boutique

BEST HOTEL US$100 – $200: Casa Joaquin Boutique Hotel

BEST HOTEL US$200 – $300: Casa El Edén

BEST HOTEL OVER US$300:   Hotel Casa Gangotena & Illa Experience Hotel

Wherever you stay, try to get a place with a rooftop terrace for views of the city and mountains . You can check out my Quito accommodation guide for a list of the best hotels with rooftop terraces.

How can I get from the airport to my hotel in Quito?

There are several ways to get from the airport to your hotel in Old Town, La Carolina, or La Mariscal:

  • Airport taxi – There’s a taxi desk in the arrivals hall at the Quito airport. Pay the desk for the taxi ride. The price is fixed based on what zone you’re staying in. They accept credit cards. They will then arrange a taxi driver for you. I’ve used this service twice.  (US$30)
  • Arrange an airport pickup with your hotel in Quito. This is what I did when I first arrived in Quito. (US$30)
  • Public Bus – You can take a bus from the airport to 3 bus stations in Quito (Quitumbe Terminal, Rio Coca Terminal, and Carcelén Terminal) (US$2).
  • Private Transfer Service – You can arrange one through Get Your Guide (US$40 for 1 person or US$45 for 2 people) or Viator (US$36 for 1 person or US$40 for 2 people)
  • Rent a car – You can book your rental with Discover Cars . (US$77 – $100/day)

Is Quito safe?

For most visitors, Quito is a safe place to visit as long as you follow a few precautions.

At night, take a taxi or Uber to get around in most parts of the city including the historic center. It’s best to avoid walking around at night in the historic center or San Blas.

The historic center has problems with pickpockets and scam artists that target tourists.

Crime has increased in Quito recently. It’s safer than Guayaquil and some coastal areas. According to statistics, it’s got about the same level of crime as Houston, Texas.

Where can I find an ATM in Quito?

There are 3 major banks in Quito :

  • Banco Pichincha – Transaction fee is US$4.50
  • Banco Guayaquil – It has the cheapest transaction fee of US$1.50

I had the best luck getting money from this ATM at the Santa Maria Supermarket in the historic center and from Banco Pichincha in La Mariscal . The weird thing was that the ATM at Banco Pichincha in the historic center never worked for me.

Where can I get a SIM card in Quito?

Three mobile phone companies sell SIM cards and data:

I used Claro in Ecuador and got my SIM card from a phone shop in the historic center. According to the Claro website , this is the rate for prepaid SIMs:

  • US$5 for 15 days and 5 GB
  • US$10 for 30 days and 12 GB
  • US$15 for 30 days and 20 GB

The phone shop I bought my card from was across the street from the Santa Maria Supermarket .

However, for convenience , you can get an eSIM instead. You don’t have to worry about changing SIM cards. Use Airalo to buy your eSIM. They have eSIMS for many different countries around the world. Their prices are pretty good and the quality of the connection is usually excellent .

Final Thoughts: Best Day Trips from Quito

You probably can’t do all of these day trips from Quito. So, which ones are the best of the best? A lot of it depends on what you want to do and see.

Here are my recommendations for the best day trips from Quiot:

BEST DAY TRIP FOR RELAXING: Papallacta

BEST DAY TRIP FOR WILDLIFE: Mindo and Antisana

BEST DAY TRIP FOR CULTURE: Otavalo

things to do in the old town quito

Welcome to our comprehensive guide to Quito’s Historic District, a captivating destination in South America that boasts a rich cultural heritage and a multitude of attractions. In this article, we will delve into the fascinating history, vibrant architecture, and must-visit landmarks of this enchanting district. Whether you’re a history enthusiast, an architecture lover, or simply seeking an immersive cultural experience, Quito’s Historic District has something to offer for everyone.

Unveiling the Historical Significance

Quito’s Historic District, also known as “Centro Histórico,” is a UNESCO World Heritage site that encompasses the heart of Ecuador’s capital city. It stands as a testament to the city’s colonial past, showcasing an intriguing blend of Spanish influence and indigenous heritage. Exploring this district is like stepping back in time, as its narrow cobblestone streets, ancient churches, and meticulously preserved buildings narrate stories of a bygone era.

Marvels of Colonial Architecture

One of the standout features of Quito’s Historic District is its exquisite colonial architecture. Immerse yourself in the grandeur of Plaza de la Independencia, the main square that serves as the epicenter of the district. The square is adorned with significant buildings, including the Presidential Palace, the Archbishop’s Palace, and the Metropolitan Cathedral. Marvel at the intricate details of the facades, the imposing bell towers, and the richly decorated interiors, all testaments to the architectural mastery of the past.

Cultural Gems Await

Venture beyond the main square and discover a treasure trove of cultural gems scattered throughout the district. Begin your journey at the Church of the Society of Jesus, commonly referred to as La Compañía. This baroque masterpiece is adorned with dazzling gold leaf decorations, intricate woodwork, and awe-inspiring religious artwork. Its ornate beauty is bound to leave you spellbound.

Continue your exploration to the San Francisco Church, an iconic landmark that dates back to the 16th century. Step inside to witness a harmonious blend of indigenous and European influences, as well as a magnificent courtyard that exudes tranquility amidst the bustling city.

Embrace the Authenticity of Calle La Ronda

For a taste of traditional Ecuadorian culture, make your way to Calle La Ronda, a charming street lined with colorful colonial houses that have been transformed into artisan shops, galleries, and lively cafés. Immerse yourself in the sights, sounds, and aromas of this vibrant neighborhood as you explore the local crafts, sample traditional delicacies, and perhaps even enjoy a captivating live music performance.

Museums: A Glimpse into the Past

Quito’s Historic District is home to an array of exceptional museums that offer profound insights into the city’s history, art, and culture. The Museo de la Ciudad, situated in a beautifully restored colonial building, showcases a diverse collection of artifacts, photographs, and interactive exhibits that chronicle the city’s evolution over the centuries.

Art enthusiasts should not miss the Centro de Arte Contemporáneo, an avant-garde art museum housed in a former military hospital. Here, you can admire thought-provoking contemporary artworks from both local and international artists, providing a glimpse into the city’s vibrant art scene.

A Gastronomic Journey

No cultural exploration is complete without indulging in the local cuisine, and Quito’s Historic District offers an array of culinary delights. Visit traditional markets such as Mercado Central to savor authentic Ecuadorian dishes bursting with flavors and aromas. Don’t miss out on trying the renowned “locro de papa,” a delicious potato soup enriched with cheese, avocado, and herbs, or the delectable “ceviche,” a refreshing seafood dish infused with citrus juices and spices.

For a truly immersive gastronomic experience, consider joining a culinary tour that takes you through the vibrant streets of the Historic District, introducing you to hidden culinary gems and local delicacies. From freshly baked empanadas to sweet treats like “helado de paila,” a traditional Ecuadorian ice cream, your taste buds are in for a delightful adventure.

Captivating Cultural Events

Throughout the year, Quito’s Historic District comes alive with captivating cultural events that celebrate its rich heritage. If you happen to visit during the Holy Week, witness the vibrant processions and religious ceremonies that fill the streets with an atmosphere of reverence and devotion.

Another highlight is the Festival of Lights, an annual event where the district is adorned with mesmerizing light installations, creating a magical ambiance that illuminates the historical landmarks and transforms the city into a spectacle of colors and creativity.

Exploring Beyond the District

While the Historic District itself offers an abundance of cultural wonders, don’t limit your exploration to its borders. Quito is nestled amidst stunning natural landscapes, providing opportunities for outdoor adventures just a short distance away. Consider embarking on a day trip to the nearby Pichincha Volcano, where you can hike to its summit and revel in breathtaking panoramic views of the city and its surrounding valleys.

Alternatively, venture to the Mitad del Mundo, a monument marking the equator line that divides the Earth’s northern and southern hemispheres. Here, you can straddle the equator and visit the Intiñan Museum, where fascinating experiments demonstrate the unique gravitational effects experienced at this global landmark.

Ecuador remains one of my favorite countries in South America. It’s tucked away in the corner, and many travelers tend to skip over it, not realising that this is one of the most versatile and biodiverse countries in the world. One place particularly slept on is the capital – Quito.

This is a city that has so much to offer on its own, but what makes a stay in the city even more rewarding is the numerous day trips from Quito that are possible in every direction. If you’re after water, mountains, history, small towns – it’s all here! Below I’ll let you in on my top five day trips from Quito, but first, a little primer to Quito itself.

Quito Pre-travel guide

How to get around.

Quito has a decent public transport system, which consists mostly of “enclosed buses”. It’s kind of a cross between a tram and a bus, with it’s own private road through Quito streets. They stop in designated stations, which are like tram stations – you buy a ticket at the entrance and then simply hop on or off when the bus rolls around. The best thing about these is they’re super cheap! 25 cents a ride.

Taxis are also plentiful in Quito and very affordable. They all run on a meter and the ride will rarely cost more than $3. If you’re riding at night it’s common for them to refuse to use the meter, so make sure you negotiate first. Anything more than $5 for a ride would be a lot, unless you’re heading out of the city limits.

What to pack

Quito sits at almost 3,000 metres above sea level (yes, that’s high!) and is rather cold all year round. Expect the nights to get down to around 10°C, so it’s a good idea to pack warm clothes both for sleeping and roaming around during the day. Rain is also common in Quito, so prepare for wet days as well. It helps to pack a pair of comfortable walking or hiking shoes too. A lot of Quito exploring can be done on foot, not to mention the many day trips and hikes that the city offers.

Where to stay

You have two choices really – old Quito or new Quito. Old Quito is exactly what is sounds like – an old historic side of Quito with cobblestone roads, big plazas, churches, winding alleys and lots of local life in action.

If you’re looking for nightlife and western comforts, this probably isn’t the best place, but if you’re after a more rustic, Latin American experience, this will fit the bill nicely. There are many small hotels and guesthouses around here that are more than affordable.

The other side of town is a lot more modern and developed. Most people gravitate towards the Mariscal district, which is sort of a backpackers haven full of cheap restaurants and bars, but has a few nice hotels too. There are not too many tourists in Quito to begin with so the place isn’t overflowing with foreigners, but it is noticeably more touristy. Not far from here are the big shopping malls and western-feeling parts of town, if that’s what you’re after.

I spent half my time in Quito in the Discovery Hostel, which is a nice boutique place right on the edge of Mariscal Square. The rest of my time was spent in an Airbnb, which is also quite active in Quito.

The dry season is the best time to visit, which runs between June and September. This is also peak season. However, as mentioned Ecuador is hardly the most popular tourist destination in the world. Even during peak seasons Quito is unlikely to feel crowded; if anything the crowds are likely to be on the Amazon cruises and the Galapagos Islands. To be honest there is never a ‘bad’ time to visit Quito, just show up whenever it fits the schedule.

Best Day Trips From Quito

1. the middle of the world.

Mitad del mundo, Ecuador

As you may have already guessed, this is where the equator runs through Ecuador (interestingly, “ecuador” actually translates to “equator” in Spanish).

The site is well set up to receive tourists, and once inside you’ll be treated to a mini tourist park, complete with museum, shops, a few restaurants, a monument, and of course, the equator itself.

Not long after you walk in you’ll come across some experiments set up for visitors to amuse themselves with – one is a mock toilet bowl to test whether water drains in the opposite direction when in the northern and southern hemispheres. Another allows you to try and balance an egg on a nail – as science says in the center of the world, the egg should stand perfectly upright. I’m not sure I did them right, but I left with the conclusion both were false!

The equator itself is marked with a thick yellow line, but there’s an interesting backstory here. The equator was marked by French explorers a few centuries ago – and as their satellite technology wasn’t quite as sharp as it is today, they misplaced the line by a few hundred metres (the real equator is about a five minute walk down the road). There is in fact a small museum at the correct coordinates, which many travellers end up checking out as well.

The easiest way to get out there is hire a taxi. Tourists head over there daily so all the drivers know exactly where you’re going. You should be able to haggle to around $30-$40 for a return trip, so it’s a good idea to fill up a car and split the cost. You can also bus if you prefer – catch one from the La Ofeila terminal – they run past Mitad del Mundo regularly. Should cost you less than a dollar, but make sure you leave early as the traffic can get bad during the day!

2. Cotopaxi National Park

Cotopaxi

Unfortunately, Cotopaxi recently started burping again, and summitting is rarely allowed these days, if ever.

However, Cotopaxi always did offer a lot for the non-climbers, and has always been one of the most popular day trips from Quito. You can explore the various lagoons and rivers, go mountain biking, search for some wildlife to photograph (Andean foxes are sometimes roaming around) and there’s a small wildlife museum you can check out too.

What most day trippers come here for though is the hike up to the climber’s refuge – a resting spot for climbers heading to the summit. It’s about a one hour hike and the views up here are pretty spectacular. It’s a short but tough climb, so make sure you’re in decent shape.

While it’s possible to visit Cotopaxi indie style, most people visit with a guide or in a group tour, which is highly recommended. It’s also not a bad idea to stay the night in the area (there are several lodges around) so you can enjoy the park at its best – the early morning and late evening offer the best photo opportunities!

Cascada

Famous for the thick cloud forest the town is settled in, Mindo is known for its biodiversity, endless greenery and affinity to all things of Mother Nature. This is the tropical Andes – one of the most biodiverse regions on the planet.

Most people come to Mindo for the waterfalls. The most popular is the Cascada La Reina, which translates to “The Queen Waterfall”, but there are several waterfalls nestled in the Mindo jungle and most travellers make it a mission to hike to all of them. This will take a whole day in itself, so if that’s the plan, you should probably plan to spend the night (or arrive really, really early).

Another thing Mindo is known for is its adventure tourism. Mountain biking, canyoning, tubing, horse riding – it can all be done here under the famous fog of the Mindo jungle.

If you do spend the night, and many travellers do, prepare for a little dose of natural lullaby. All types of jungle rustle and wildlife can be heard throughout the night, particularly the birds (Mindo was originally a birdwatcher haven, before the backpacker crowd rolled in). While the town is fast developing and becoming more popular each year, it’s still a glorious place to fall back into nature.

As for getting to Mindo, it’s easy. Direct buses run from Quito daily for $3 from La Ofeila bus station.

4. Papallacta Hot Springs

Papallacta

A whole economy has developed around Papallacta’s thermal pools, heated by the regions volcanic activity, with many lodges and guesthouses now advertising their own private termas, or hot springs.

However, most people come here for the famous Termas de Papallacta, a collection of privately run hot pools for visitors to use. There is a modest entrance fee to get in, depending on which set of pools you want to visit. You can also stay at the adjacent hotel, where entrance to the pools will be included with your room.

Some people organise a tour or shuttle to get to Papallacta, but it’s very possible to travel by bus from the Quito terminal. Get the bus for either Tena or Baeza from Cumbaya in Quito. The ride shouldn’t cost you more than a couple of dollars and will take around two hours to get to Papallacta. You’ll get dropped off on the highway and you’ll need to make a hike up the hill to the centre of town.

There are also buses that’ll take you up for a few dollars. Head there during the weekdays to avoid the crowds. Also know that other than eat fish and bathe in the springs, there’s not a whole lot to do, so while it’s a great day trip there’s not much reason to stay the night. Head there early so you can get back before nightfall.

Otavalo Market

However, there is more to see here than just the market. The Peguche waterfall is just a 3km outside of town, and 3km in the opposite direction is the famous San Pablo lake, the most visited lake in Ecuador. There is also the small town of Cotacachi, known for its leather goods, just 15km to the north, as well as many other lakes, mountains and indigenous villages surrounding the town. Also don’t forget that Otavalo is right in the middle of the Imbabura mountains, a stunning site in itself.

With so much to see, many travellers opt to spend a few nights here rather than try to squeeze it all into a day, but if you’re only there to check out the market, one day is more than enough.

Getting there is easy – simply catch the Otavalo bus from the Terminal Carcelen in Quito.

Thanks again to Bren for sharing his knowledge on the best day trips from Quito! I’m itching to get to South America sooner than later, especially after reading his post!

Are you heading to Ecuador soon?! What day trips from Quito are on your list to explore?!

6 Best Day Trips from Quito

' src=

Ecuador’s capital, Quito , is an exciting place to visit. At 2,850 meters (9,350 feet) above sea level, it is the world’s second highest capital and the only one on the equator. It’s got one of the best preserved old towns in all the Americas. After exploring the capital and all it has to offer for a few days, it’s time to explore the surrounding environs on day trips from Quito. Perhaps you’ll shop until you drop (or run out of money) at South America’s largest outdoor market. Or maybe you’ll spend a day absorbing the scenic grandeur of the Andes or photographing birds and butterflies in a cloud forest. The day is yours; make the most of it.

6. Papallacta [SEE MAP]

Papallacta

You’ll pass through several villages and pretty scenery as you make the hour-long drive from Quito to Papallacta, high in the Andes Mountains. Papallacta, noted for its hot springs, is situated at an elevation of more than 3,290 meters (10,800 feet), but the drive there takes you even higher, to just over 3,960 meters (13,000 feet). There’s not too much to do in Papallacta, except soak in the natural hot springs, which are said to have healing powers. Lake Papallacta is located here; it used to supply drinking water to Quito, but an oil spill from a nearby pipeline contaminated the water. If you’re lucky, you might see wildlife such as opossums, weasels and spectacled bear.

5. Mitad del Mundo [SEE MAP]

Mitad del Mundo

Since Ecuador is named after the equator that runs through it, you’ll want to visit the site where it all begins. Ciudad Mitad del Mundo, 25 km (16 miles) from Quito, is home to a national landmark that is the exact location of the equator. The 30-meter (98-foot) high monument also honors the Franco Spanish Geodesic Mission that placed the equator here in 1736. The site also contains the Museo Etnográfico Mitad del Mundo, which is devoted to Ecuador’s native people. Ancient astronomers had placed the equator cross point at Catequilla, now an archaeological site, which is at 0° latitude and the correct location.

4. Quilotoa Lake [SEE MAP]

Quilotoa Lake

Eight hundred years ago, Quilotoa, a mountain high in the Ecuadoran Andes erupted, spewing volcanic ash as far away as the Pacific Ocean. When it was over, a two-mile wide caldera remained. It filled with water and today is known as Quilotoa Lake. If you’re an experienced hiker, you might want to walk the six miles around the caldera rim. Be forewarned, the hikes can be sandy, steep and challenging in places. A shorter hike involves going from the viewpoint down into the crater, where primitive camping is available. The lake is almost 3,960 meters (13,000 feet) in altitude, so you may want to pace yourself.

3. Mindo Cloud Forest [SEE MAP]

Mindo Cloud Forest

If you’re looking to spend a day communing with nature, Mindo Cloud Forest is the place to go, particularly if you’re into nature photography, especially birds. This nature reserve, where it’s possible to look down upon the clouds, is home to more than 450 species of birds, plus an astounding variety of butterflies, mammals, reptiles and orchids. As you navigate the forest path you’ll also come across several beautiful waterfalls. Mindo is famous for its chocolate making, so you might want to buy some to snack on while you’re hiking through the forest or photographing birds. Because protecting the environment is so important, visitors are asked not to use spray cans of insect repellant, but rather an atomizer to protect the ozone layer.

2. Otavalo Market [SEE MAP]

Otavalo Market

Visiting the Otavalo Market, two hours by bus from Quito, can be hazardous to your nerves. You’ll have to decide whether to snap up all the great native handicrafts or snap pictures for your memory book. Of course, it’s possible to do both. That’s what makes South America’s largest outdoor market so much fun. The colorful market is a good place to buy handmade textiles as well as items made locally from wood, silver and ceramics. The Plata de los Ponchos, as the market is known locally, is open daily, but Saturdays and Wednesdays, in that order, are the best days to go.

1. Cotopaxi [SEE MAP]

#1 of Day Trips From Quito

Cotopaxi is famous for being the second highest mountain, at 5,897 meters (19,347 feet) in Ecuador. It’s also known as being an active volcano that is part of the Pacific Ring of Fire volcanic chain. The Cotopaxi volcano erupted more than 50 times since 1738. The most recent eruption began in August 2015 and lasted until the following January. The mountain is home to an equatorial glacier, a rarity in the world. Cotopaxi is visible from Quito on a clear day, but how much more fun to make a day trip there to see a mountain that was considered sacred by pre-Columbian peoples.

Quito, Ecuador

A Weekend in Quito

I have always been  fascinated by Latin America. Maybe it’s because I took 6 years of Spanish classes in school. Maybe it’s because I am low key OBSESSED with the food from Latin countries. Maybe it’s because I love the way that  Latin Americans celebrate life. Whatever it is, upon moving back to North America (after spending three years living in Japan), I knew I would soon be planning my first trip to South America.

After coming across an article about cruising in the Galápagos Islands, I was pretty much sold on the idea. But first, we had to pick our departure city! There are two cities to choose from when starting your Galápagos adventure: Quito or Guayaquil. Because I really love to visit capital cities, we decided to embark to the Galápagos from Quito.

Welcome to my itinerary for a Weekend in Quito, Ecuador! This itinerary is perfect for tacking onto the weekend before (or after) a Galápagos excursion. You’re in the right place if you enjoy luxury hotels, fine dining, museums highlighting pre-Columbian history, botanical gardens, and city views.

Anything marked with *** below are the spots I highly recommend!

Travel tips.

As a disclaimer, this itinerary was made for staying in the town limits of Quito, mostly in the Old Town, and specifically does not rely on the use of a car. There are multiple spots that are recommended for your visit to Quito (such as Ciudad Mitad del Mundo, or Middle of the World, and the TelefériQo cable car) that I intentionally did not plan in this itinerary as I wanted to thoroughly enjoy the city and where my own two feet could get me. If you have an extra day, however, I think both of the aforementioned options would be great to add onto your itinerary.

There are less-than-safe areas of Quito, so take the precautions you normally would in cities (don’t flash money, beware of pickpockets, stick to the higher traffic tourist areas after dark, etc.). While the Old Town felt completely safe to me the entire time, members of the hotel very strongly cautioned us against straying from the well lit streets of the Old Town at night.

Leave plenty of time to wander, ramble, and roam in the Old Town. Did you know this is the first city to be named a UNESCO World Heritage Site? When you see it in person, you’ll know why! The Spanish colonial architecture is extremely well preserved and the narrow, cobblestoned streets will make you feel like you’re in a different time. Shopping, dining, and viewing opportunities abound, so take your time with them. Josh and I even took some time to shop at Casa Montecristi for some authentic Panama hats (a style that actually originated in Ecuador!).

DAY ONE: Arrival

You’ll arrive at Mariscal Sucre International Airport, which is located about an hour outside the city. Grab a taxi and enjoy the drive into Quito. Ecuador’s capital city  sits in the Andean mountains at an elevation of about 2,850m. The drive is beautiful and I’m not sure if I could ever tire of seeing those mountains everyday. Enjoy the views of Cotopaxi, an active volcano not far from the city, with it’s high peak covered in snow. Your first glimpse of Ecuador will not disappoint.

Check in to your hotel. My two recommendations:

1. ***CASA GANGOTENA*** – Luxurious Relais & Chateaux property and arguably the best hotel in all of Ecuador. It sits directly adjacent to Plaza de San Francisco, providing it with one of the best locations in the UNESCO protected Old Town. Beautifully appointed and spacious rooms with not a single detail overlooked.  Read my review of the Casa Gangotena here .

Quito, Ecuador

2. JW MARRIOTT –  Another luxury property sitting in the newer part of the city. There is a gorgeous outdoor space with a large pool area. The spa is lovely and they offer wonderful massages. The concierge lounge has an excellent food and wine offering in the evenings and affords incredible views over the city and of the surrounding mountains. Our room had a balcony and the staff in the lounge were gracious enough to allow us to take food to enjoy in our private space. Click here to view this property .

Quito, Ecuador

***CHOCOLATE TASTING*** –  Ecuador produces most of the world’s fine chocolate. Don’t miss the opportunity to do a tasting and make sure to leave plenty of luggage space to bring some home!

If you’re staying at Casa Gangotena, check their schedule of complimentary activities. They do offer a wonderful guided chocolate tasting. Another option is to stop by Chez Tiff Artesenal  on Calle La Ronda, a well known chocolate store.

Also, when in Ecuador, you MUST try some cheese in your hot chocolate! I know. It sounds crazy. But the saltiness from the cheese paired with the chocolate…it will make you ask yourself why you’ve waited so long to try it. Trust me. 😉

Quito, Ecuador

CALLE  LA RONDA – Among the chocolate stores, Calle La Ronda has an abundance of restaurants and bars and is the most hopping place in the area for local nightlife. We chose a restaurant with rooftop seating and a nice view and tried the local delicacy…guinea pig! It’s always a little odd to eat something you’re really not used to thinking of as food, but honestly, it wasn’t too bad. Though, I don’t think I’m in a big hurry to try it again….

DAY TWO: Old Town

***BASILICA OF THE NATIONAL VOW** – This is  a beautiful church with gorgeous stained glass, but the highlight of the visit is certainly the trip up the towers. There are quite a few stairs and the final stretch to the top requires a climb up a near-vertical ladder with questionable safety standards in place…but the views from the top are incredible. (The ladder almost made me quit, but I’m so glad I took the risk!) The vista looks over all of Quito and the mountains.

You guys. Those mountains are breathtaking. (Literally. Altitude sickness is real y’all! So take your time when climbing a tower of stairs and don’t feel bad or think you’re out of shape haha!)

Plan to spend about 1.5 hours at the Basilica.

Quito, Ecuador

It’s easy to walk to the Basilica from Casa Gangotena.

Side note: You know why I always advocate walking as much as you can? (Hint: It’s not just to work off all the food you’re eating.)

Walking provides opportunities that you would never discover from a car or train or bus. The opportunities that only arise when you’re really “in the thick of it.”

In Quito, I was lucky enough to stumble upon a local festival. I had no idea this was going on, and I’m still not quite sure what exact holiday Ecuadorians celebrate in late June, though I gathered it was a Catholic celebration. But, whatever the reason, people were out lining the street with alfombras, or carpets, of flowers and it was one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever seen. Josh and I spent a lot of time walking down this street, admiring the care and skill of the people creating the alfombras.

Quito, Ecuador

LUNCH: LA PURISMA –  Cute spot for a meal with great, fresh food. I recommend the ceviche and sweet plantains! Also in a very walkable part of town. When you’re finished with lunch, start exploring!

Quito, Ecuador

WANDER. RAMBLE. ROAM.  – Explore the Old Town on your own. Definitely check out Plaza de San Francisco . There are many great shops around, so now would be a great time to pick up some items that you would love to take home with you.

Quito, Ecuador

CARMEN ALTO MUSEUM –  Another complimentary excursion provided by Casa Gangotena, this tour is of a Carmelite convent and introduces you to the life of a nun, both now and hundreds of years ago. It’s full of history and a beautiful space. I particularly enjoyed the courtyards. It was an enjoyable way to spend about an hour or so.

***BANDIDO BREWING*** –  A l ocal brewery close to Old Town with a variety of tasty beer on offer, a good selection of food, and a super fun atmosphere. Great spot for pre-dinner drinks!

Quito, Ecuador

***DINNER: ZAZU*** – For the first time since your arrival, you’ll need an Uber to get out to your dinner spot. Zazu is located in the newer part of the city and is a  Relais & Chateaux fine dining restaurant, specializing in modern Ecuadorian cuisine. A locally sourced and inspired menu, beautifully presented. The staff are attentive and helpful. Easy to spend a couple hours here eating, drinking, and enjoying. I’ll also note they have an excellent Spotify list playing in the restaurant. The ambience is perfect.

I specifically recommend the suckling pig taquitos. Reservations can be made through their website .

Quito, Ecuador

DAY THREE: New City

BRUNCH: CASA GANGOTENA – Especially if you’re staying at the hotel, Casa Gangotena puts on a lovely Sunday Brunch. This is perfect for a late morning start to your day. (Which you might need after eating and drinking late into Saturday night at Zazu!)

***NATIONAL MUSEUM OF ECUADOR*** – A few months before my trip to Ecuador, I had read the book “Guns, Germs, and Steel” by Jared Diamond . (Highly recommend, by the way.) The book discussed all of human history, much of which began in South America, particularly in the region that is now Ecuador. I knew I wanted to see this museum, as its collection holds vast amounts of artifacts dating up to thousands of years ago. The exhibits cover all of Ecuador’s history from the pre-Columbian era to modern times. I also found the exhibit entitled “Facets of Gender in Pre-Historic Ecuador” particularly interesting. Plan to spend a few hours here.

Quito, Ecuador

QUITO BOTANICAL GARDENS –  Once you finish at the museum, make your way over to the Quito Botanical Gardens. It is a huge green space in the city, and it’s easy to spend the rest of the afternoon here roaming. There is an extensive variety of flora housed here and provides a great opportunity to slow down and smell the flowers.

Quito, Ecuador

DRINKS: CASA GANGOTENA – The rooftop bar at the hotel overlooks the Plaza and is the perfect place for an evening cocktail. This is your last night in Quito, so soak it all in and enjoy those last looks at this beautiful city.

Quito, Ecuador

And that’s a full weekend in Quito! There’s so much more you can do with your time in this lovely city, so please don’t look at this as an all-inclusive guide. However, it will lead you to fun local spots, great food, and beautiful wandering, which was exactly what I was looking for.
