What to Wear on a Boat | Boat Outfits Ideas You’ll Love

When you’re planning a boat trip, the first thing you need to think about is what to wear. There are a variety of different types of boat trips, from leisurely cruises on a pontoon boat to sailing expeditions in the Caribbean.

No matter what type of boat trip you’re taking, there are plenty of outfit options that will make you look and feel your best. And I can tell you from experience, that being comfortable makes the trip ten times more enjoyable. In this post, I’ll take a look at some cute sailing outfits for women and show you how to put together the perfect summer yacht party outfit.

Be sure to also research what you should be eating on a boat trip to ensure you don’t go hungry anywhere along the way.

Casual Boat Ride Outfits

flower t-shirt selection

Casual boat trips are complimented perfectly by comfortable boat ride outfits. And what you’re wearing should certainly be the first thing on your boat trip checklist . Here are some of the essential items of clothing to make up your boat attire.

Casual loose fitting shorts

Comfort comes first when it comes to casual boat rides. And what says comfort more than a pair of loose-fitting shorts. They are perfect for the warmer weather as they’re airy but still allow your legs to catch a tan (if you enjoy that sort of thing).

Peak cap or hat

Having a peak cap or hat with you is essential for keeping the sun off of your face. The last thing you want is to get off the boat only to discover that your face is a brighter shade of red. It also comes in handy to shade your eyes from the sun and the glare on the water, which can get quite intense on sunny days.

If you are not one for wearing shorts, then a pair of boho pants might be a better fit for you. If you’re looking for boat cruise outfit ideas for ladies, then pairing your boho pants with a strappy top will not only be a good look but be incredibly practical at the same time.

The loose-fitting pants will ensure you don’t get too hot when the weather is warm, but there is also enough material to keep you covered from a chilly breeze on the water.

A jumpsuit is the ideal summer boat cruise outfit because it is light and flowy. If you are planning on hopping off the boat for a little swim, then you can simply wear your jumpsuit over your costume, which is my go-to.

If you plan on wearing long pants or shorts, then a t-shirt is an ideal option for those with pale skin or who tend to burn easily. Keeping your shoulders covered goes a long way in protecting your most vulnerable areas from the harsh sun’s rays.

River rain jacket

Weather can change so quickly when you’re on the water, so it’s important to take something to keep you warm. A river rain jacket is ideal as it’s waterproof, so you’re safe from splash, mist, and rain if the weather takes a turn for the worst.

Boat Party Outfit

If you have the pleasure of partying on the ocean, then you need a killer yacht party outfit. Luckily, yacht party attire for women is not that hard to come by, but it does need to cover a variety of criteria. While looking good maybe your number one, being comfortable and warm are also both essential.

Here are some of my top recommendations for adding to your yacht outfit ideas.

Two-piece outfit with a maxi skirt

If you’re wondering what to wear to a boat party, then a two-piece outfit might be the way to go. Not only is it a head-turning look, but it is incredibly comfortable and shows just enough skin to make it yacht party appropriate.

The great thing about a mesh dress is that it can be worn over a bikini or swimsuit to take the chill out of the air, and to make you feel slightly more clothed. It’s easy to get in and out of if you are planning on swimming and allows your bikini to dry through your mesh dress.

Summerlong jumpsuit

If you want to look great without showing off too much skin, then a long jumpsuit might just be the female yacht party attire for you. It’s fashionable and flattering on all body types, allowing you to look put together without much thought at all about what you need to wear.

Long summer beach dress

A long dress with strategic cutouts allows you to show off some skin while still keeping it classy. It’s another piece that can be thrown over a bikini when you are finished tanning or swimming, making it ultra-convenient.

Outfit for Sailing

packing clothes for boat trip

If you are going sailing on the open ocean, then you need boat gear to suit your needs. These are some items you could be adding to your sailing outfits to make your experience a whole lot more comfortable. Whether you’re rafting in Glacier National Park or heading out on open waters, these clothing options are sure to come in handy.

A rash guard is something that acts as a swimsuit but prevents you from getting rashes when you are walking around wet for too long the way a swimsuit would cause a rash. This is perfect to go under other clothes and be worn by itself on the warmer days.

Waterproof and windproof pants

Waterproof and windproof pants are an absolute must. As we all know, the weather on the water can turn in a matter of seconds, and you don’t want to be caught in the cold. These pants will protect you from the spray of the water, but also from the icy oceanic breeze while you’re sailing.

Waterproof and windproof jacket

This can be worn over your rash vest to keep you warm when the weather turns. A waterproof and windproof jacket is one of those things that are essential to take with you, whether or not the weather is good when you’re leaving on your sailing expedition. I have never regretted having that extra layer of protection from the cold.

Water shoes

If you go sailing, you’re going to get wet. To avoid getting your new pair of sneakers soaked to the brim by taking water shoes. They won’t get damaged by the salty water and will help you to grip the deck even if there is plenty of water on board.

Life vest

It’s not uncommon in sailing to get swept overboard, but when you do, you want to make sure that you’ll remain bobbing on the surface of the water. The easiest way to do this is to wear a life vest.

Frequently Asked Questions:

When it comes to what you should be wearing on a boat, there are a couple of other questions that people generally ask. As I tend to take boat trips rather regularly I feel that I can help you out if you are wondering any of the following questions.

Should you wear jeans on a boat?

Although jeans are alright for a boat party, they are generally not your best bet. When they get wet they can be very uncomfortable to wear, which means you are likely to take them off at some point or another. If your heart is set on wearing jeans on your next boat ride, I would recommend taking a change of clothes with you just in case you happen to get wet somewhere along the way.

What should I wear on a boat when it’s cold?

it’s best to layer your clothes when the weather is a little on the cold side. This way, when it warms up you can always peel off a couple of layers. It’s important to take a windbreaker with you to fight off the sometimes icy winds that work their way across the water. Anything waterproof is likely to come in handy when you are aboard a boat.

How cold is too cold for boating?

Boating when it is too cold can become a risky ordeal so it’s best to stay on dry land at any temperatures below 70 degrees Fahrenheit. This is because falling into the water can cause hypothermia to set in rather quickly, and that isn’t something anyone wants to have to experience.

Final Thoughts on What to Wear on a Boat Ride

Now that you have a better idea of what to wear on a yacht day trip, you can make your experience a whole lot more comfortable and enjoyable. Pack these items in for a cruise in New Jersey or a yacht party off the coast of Miami and you’ll be styling the whole way.

Whether you’re wondering what to wear on a pontoon boat or simply what to wear boating of any kind, this post will help you find the right clothing items to make up your outfit. Wherever you’re heading off to, enjoy the boat trip!

What to wear on a boat – whether you’re on a super yacht or a dinghy

by Sylvia | Jul 1, 2021 | 1 comment

Okay, so it’s unlikely that you’ll be on one of those gargantuan billion-dollar super yachts that sail the seas of the world’s glitziest resorts each summer (unless you happen to be mega rich). However, you may be lucky enough to have a boat trip coming up this year – whether you’re staying onboard or taking a day trip. In which case, you’ll definitely need to think about what to wear on a boat.

It’s becoming increasingly popular to hire boats for parties and events. Or, of course, you might just be doing a spot of sightseeing and relaxing. So, how can you make sure your outfit is practical enough to cope with a trip out to sea or down river while still looking stylish?

What to wear on a boat: What to think about?

I’m going to talk about everything from a casual day on the water to a party. But first, let’s look generally at what you need to think about when considering what to wear on a boat.

The weather

While you tend to think about boat trips as summer happenings, you may be out in colder weather and it does tend to get windy out at sea. So, make sure you have a warm cover-up.

Practical shoes

I’ve seen plenty of celebrities tottering around in high heels on yachts, but you’ll definitely want some practical, yet stylish, non-slip footwear for your boat trip.

Alison @wardrobe_oxygen above (read her stye interview here ) opts for a pair of Birkenstock-style sandals which would be ideal for a day on the water.

Let’s take a look at what to wear on a boat – and what to take with you.

I’m going to assume this is a warm weather trip. And that you are relaxing rather thank getting too involved in actually sailing the boat.

Your swimsuit

If you’re likely to be sitting on the deck or swimming, you probably want to arrive with your swimsuit on as changing facilities in most boats are limited.

A rashguard

Perhaps you’ll be snorkelling on your trip. If you’ll be spending a long-time in the sea, you may want a rashguard or a long-sleeved swimsuit to ensure you stay warmer and don’t get sunburnt.

A warmer sweater or cardigan

It tends to be windier out at sea than on the shore, so you may feel cold even on a warm day. It’s best to pack a warm layer even if you don’t think it’s very cold.

Should you wear heels?

I don’t recommend wearing heels on a boat because of the undulating waves and the slippery surfaces. Plus, most yacht owners don’t like heels to be worn as they damage the deck.

Try sneakers, a boat shoe or sneakers with non-slip soles instead.

I recommend shoes with a back strap. We have had several people who wear slip ones struggle with that first step on to the boat!

Also, check out Rip Skirt Hawaii. They come in many patterns and several lengths. Velcro wrap and they dry quickly when wet. I have 3 and love them!

What to Wear on a Boat: The Ultimate Guide for 2024

Table of Contents

When cruising, sailing, or lounging on the Deck, the ensemble you pick isn’t just about looking fabulous—it’s also about comfort, practicality, and weather-appropriateness. In this blog post, we’re diving headfirst into the world of nautical chic, offering fresh ideas for outfits that truly make waves. From elegant yet functional ensembles to attire that mirrors the luxury of a yacht, we’ve got it all covered. Prepare to embark on a journey that takes you through breathable fabrics, accessories that accentuate, and an undeniably seaworthy style. Navigate with me as we explore ‘What to Wear on a Boat: Outfit Ideas for Women,’ and allow the voyage of fashion discovery to set sail!

Setting Sail with Style: Essential Boat Day Attire Tips

1. The Art of Simplicity  While bringing out our most glamorous looks is tempting, let’s keep it grounded on the boat. Think about the winds that might unravel intricate hairstyles or the splashes that could surprise you mid-journey. The simpler, the better. Trust me, you’ll be more relaxed; there’s nothing more enchanting than a carefree soul on a boat!

2. Footwear Fundamentals  On one boat trip, I decided to wear my favorite suede sandals, and let’s say they didn’t remain my favorite for long. Oops! So, here’s a golden rule: always opt for non-slip, waterproof flat sandals. Not only will they keep you steady during those unexpected choppy waters, but they’ll also be safe from any unplanned splashes. And if you’re on a yacht or a similar fancy vessel? Be prepared to go barefoot!

3. Evening Elegance  Ever found yourself on a boat, gazing at a spectacular sunset, only to be interrupted by an unexpected chill? Yep, been there. Always bring along a lightweight jacket or wrap. Trust me, as the sun sets, the temperature can dip quicker than you think, especially with that sea breeze.

4. Daytime Essentials  Nothing dampens a boat day like squinting against the blinding sun or chasing after a hat stolen by the wind. So, grab a snug-fitting hat and some sunglasses. You’ll be grateful for the shade and the added protection against those sneaky UV rays.

5. Sun Protection is Key . One sunny boat day, I learned that water can amplify sunburns. (Hello, unexpected tan lines!) So, always,  always  lather up on that sunscreen. Those UV rays can be sneaky even if you’re lounging in the shade.

6. Be Prepared  If your boat day involves a dip in the water, be an intelligent sailor and bring a change of clothes and a towel. I’ve learned from experience that sitting in a wet outfit is not the most pleasant feeling.

Setting sail should be all about relaxation and fun. So with these tips in your fashion arsenal, you’re ready for a stylish and comfy boat day adventure. Happy sailing!

What To Wear on a Boat

Ian Fortey

If you’re just getting into boating yourself or you’re planning to visit friends or family on their boat, it’s always a good idea to be familiar with what’s going to be appropriate in terms of clothing. It’s not like you need a formal boating outfit with a pirate hat or anything so involved as that, but there are some clothes better suited to being on a boat than others. I would argue that the most important article of clothing for any boat ride is the proper footwear and, after that, everything else has a lot of wiggle room.

Depending on what kind of boat you’re going to be on and what you’re going to be doing on the boat there are a few ways you can adjust your outfit to make you the most comfortable while still being dressed for the occasion. Let’s take a look at some of the more common reasons for taking a boat trip in the first place, whether that be a fishing trip or a boat part, and go from there.

Choose Your Boat Trip Footwear First

Vans Boat Shoes-Zapato Del Barca

Lots of sites will put this down the list of things to choose from but I’m listing it first and most important. Why? Because no one ever got into an accident on a boat for wearing the wrong shirt. But the wrong shoes can ruin your day.

There’s a reason they make boat shoes or deck shoes and that’s because boats can be slippery. The wood of a boat deck can be too slick sometimes, especially if it’s wet from rain or sea spray. Combine that with the motion of the boat and, if you’re not used to being out on the water, your footing can suffer.

If you can’t get a good pair of boat shoes, or don’t want to invest in new shoes for what might just be a one-time event, look for shoes with a non-slip sole. Try to avoid black rubber because that can scuff and leave big, ugly black marks on the deck. Your host will probably not appreciate it.

A lot of people will lean towards sandals and flip flops for a boat trip because that’s typical footwear for the beach and being around water, but it’s often a bad idea for boats if they’re just cheap ones that don’t have grip. Flip flops especially can leave you slipping all over the deck of a boat in bad conditions.

The other reason I put this first is that, for many people, you want to be able to coordinate an outfit down to the shoes. So if you know what shoes you are going to have to wear to be safe on board, it makes it easier to build the rest of your boating outfit around that.

If you’re attending a yacht party or another formal event, in particular if you’re a woman, you’ll want to resist the urge to wear heels. I’ve seen women do it and sometimes it’s fine and goes off without a hitch but more than once I’ve seen someone wearing heels on a boat take a dive when the boat lurched over a wave. It’s a risk that may not be worth taking.

They do make boat shoes in a number of styles so you can find shoes to suit most tastes and occasions if you’re interested.

Casual Boat Ride Outfits

boat trip wear

Just heading out for a fun ride, a sort of no big deal event?  There are a few options for this kind of voyage where we’re guessing the weather is probably mild to warm.

Outfits for Women

Since you may be dealing with wind and some unpredictable weather at times, it’s good to not make your outfit too complicated on a boat. Simple stuff works best.

Shorts and a t-shirt is the basic and go to for anyone and it can work great on any type of boat trip. If the weather is a little cooler or breezy, a light jacket or windbreaker is a good option as well as some longer pants. Light colors to stay cool and light materials as well.

If you’re looking at boat-specific clothing you’ll notice a lot of the recommendations for women amount to little more than large sun hats, swimsuits and maybe a sundress. This has a lot to do with boating history and how women were often never even allowed on boats and then, when they were, it was simply as passengers so there was no real effort made to produce outfits for women specifically on boats. Men were piloting and controlling the boats and women did little if anything.

That said, there’s nothing wrong with those casual options for a woman, either. Kaftans, dresses, and wraps or a bathing suit cover up to go with swimsuits make for reasonable and comfortable options for most casual boat rides.

Outfit Ideas for Men

For casual boating trips, shorts and a t-shirt are again a solid option. Light materials like cotton, nylon long sleeves or especially something light and breathable like linen is a great option. You want that air flow to avoid getting too hot under the sun.

For shorts or pants, something cotton is never a bad idea but denim is also a good choice, especially if you’re planning to be moving around but not getting wet at all. Denim is tough and durable and less likely to snag or tear on anything on a boat.

If there is a chance of getting wet, ditch the denim for something lighter and fast drying.

If you plan to be out in the breeze or towards evening, a long jacket or windbreaker is also a good idea in case foul weather rolls in.

Accessories

Man in Hat Fishing

For both men and women, you’ll want to make sure you have three key things in addition to whatever other outfit you choose.

  • Hat . A wide-brimmed hat to protect from intense sun is always a good idea. Remember, nothing is casting much shade out on the water so on a cloudless day you get full exposure. You can also go for a captain’s hat or just a ball cap if that’s more your style, but a wide brimmed hat for fishing or lounging will obviously keep more sun off of your face and the back of your neck as well. If you don’t have the full brim, hit the back of your neck with sunscreen.
  • Sunglasses . For the same reason as above, a good pair of polarized sunglasses can protect your eyes from the sun’s rays. This is doubly important on the water because you have direct sun and also sun that reflects back from the water’s surface, so you have several angles coming at you.
  • Sunscreen. Just like sunglasses, sunscreen is important to protect you from the direct sun as well as the reflected sun. You can burn remarkably fast on a boat as a result of this dual sun exposure so you want to use at least an SPF 30 but something stronger wouldn’t be a bad idea.

What to Wear to a Boat Party

boat trip wear

If the occasion is a little more formal then you want to spruce things up a bit. This has a range as well, of course. You don’t want to wear a tuxedo to a boat party unless it’s a formal affair. Not that you can’t, but definitely dress for the event.

If we’re not fully formal, and usually boat parties, even yacht parties, don’t get that formal, then find something casual but dignified. Shorts may no longer be the appropriate choice here, but a decent pair of dress pants, khakis and a button down shirt and sport coat or blazer is probably appropriate. If it is formal, then even a suit may be the most appropriate choice unless it’s specifically black tie.

For women, a formal occasion might see something like a cocktail dress or gown being appropriate, but hopefully your host has clarified just how formal this is ahead of time. Otherwise you shouldn’t look out of place in a wrap skirt, wide-legged pants, or whatever outfit you’d feel just as comfortable wearing to a pool party type event.

Men or women, you still need the right shoes for a party. This is again where it’s good to look at the different styles of boat shoes. Some can be very dressy and formal looking. If you still can’t find what looks best for you, just remember you want non-slip soles. That’s the most important thing here.

How to Dress for Fishing on a Boat

boat trip wear

There is a much wider range of possibilities for fishing on a boat for any number of reasons. To start, fishing trips tend to happen with less concern for the weather. You may be out early morning before the sun, in fog, even in a light rain. Plus, heading out in colder weather is par for the course for many anglers. So you need to dress for the occasion.

Fishing on a boat is an active thing and, as such, it’s good to wear layers to help make this more comfortable. Your base layer when you go fishing should be a lightweight shirt that can help wick away sweat and, if possible, block UV rays. You want light plus breathable here, so maybe a cotton-poly blend, nylon, or even polyester. The reason you don’t want to go full cotton is that if you sweat a lot, or just get wet in general, your shirt will not dry quickly and that can make you uncomfortable.

A long sleeve shirt is a good idea for a second layer. It sounds counterintuitive if you’re fishing on a hot day, but being covered in the sun is essential. It keeps you protected and also slows potential dehydration.  Waterproof clothing is always a good idea to wear on a boat when fishing.

You can buy good quality shirts or light jackets designed for anglers that have great air circulation to keep you cool but also well protected from the elements.

In terms of color, it’s obviously a personal choice but a lot of anglers like to keep things muted and natural with greens, browns, grays and even camo. That said, it’s important to have a life jacket on when you’re in a boat, especially if you’re up and down a lot when fishing.

Nylon fishing pants are a good idea for the same reason a nylon top is. Make sure to get something with a good number of pockets if you need them. You can go for shorts as well but make sure you’re using sunscreen on your legs.

In terms of shoes, this is another mixed bag of options but non-slip soles are still the most important part, even more so than just for casual boating. Your fishing boat is going to get wet inside when you’re fishing and you may be dealing with fish slime as well. So you want to make sure your shoes have a good grip and make it as hard as possible for you to slip and have an accident.

If you have closed shoes, make sure they’re waterproof or they could get uncomfortable and also end up smelling dreadful when you’re done for the day.

Fishing Accessories

boat trip wear

Like cruising and day trips, you need a good fishing hat , sunglasses and sunscreen for a day of fishing. Make sure you bring water to drink as well. The activity under the sun can dehydrate you faster than you might think.

Fishing gloves are an extra item you may want to consider. They help you keep a good grip when things are wet or slimy but also protect your hands from the sun since they’re going to be exposed for a long while.

Things like hip waders aren’t typically necessary if you’re boat fishing, unless you plan on hopping out of the boat here and there for whatever reason, so it’s not usually something to worry about.

The Bottom Line

Dressing to be on a boat needs to be a mix of practical and comfortable. You want clothes that won’t hold moisture from sweat, rain or the surf. You want boat outfits that are lightweight to allow air flow and prevent sweating and dehydration as much as possible. But you also want protection from UV rays. A linen shirt for men, maxi dresses for men, or other items that have a nautical vibe can be used for boat trips on hot summer days.

Shoes that are no slip are vital on a boat. Beyond that, comfort is something to look for, so light tops, wraps, swimsuits, shorts and shirts are always a good plan. For more formal attire, make sure your shoes are still non-slip and keep focused on balancing what looks good with what is practical for the time and place.

Introduction

Embarking on a boat trip is always a thrilling adventure, whether you’re setting sail on a serene lake, cruising along a picturesque river, or exploring the vast open sea. However, just like any other outdoor activity, choosing the appropriate clothing can greatly enhance your comfort and enjoyment during your boat journey.

When it comes to boat trips, it’s not only about looking stylish but also ensuring that you are dressed appropriately for the elements – be it the sun, wind, or water. Finding the right balance between comfort, functionality, and protection is key. In this article, we’ll explore some essential garments and accessories that will ensure you have a smooth and enjoyable boat trip experience.

From swimwear to protective gear, we’ll cover it all. So, if you’re wondering what to wear on a boat trip, read on to discover how to dress for comfort and style without compromising on safety.

Before we dive into the specifics, it’s important to consider the weather and the type of boat trip you’ll be going on. Are you going on a leisurely fishing trip or a thrilling water sports adventure? The nature of your activity will determine the level of protection and functionality your clothing needs to provide.

Now, let’s start by looking at clothing options that prioritize comfort during your boat trip.

Clothing for Comfort

Comfort should be at the forefront when choosing your boat trip attire. Opt for lightweight and breathable fabrics that allow for easy movement and ventilation. Avoid heavy or restrictive clothing that might limit your mobility or cause discomfort during the journey.

Avoid wearing jeans or heavy cotton pants, as they can become heavy and uncomfortable when wet. Instead, opt for quick-drying shorts or lightweight trousers made from moisture-wicking materials like nylon or polyester blends. These fabrics will keep you cool and dry even if you encounter unexpected splashes or rain.

For tops, choose breathable t-shirts or loose-fitting shirts made from moisture-wicking fabrics. Avoid thick, heavy materials that can cling to your body and become uncomfortable when wet. Instead, look for lightweight and fast-drying options.

In cooler conditions, consider layering your clothing to stay comfortable. Lightweight jackets or hoodies made from water-resistant materials can provide an extra layer of warmth and protection against wind and light rain.

It’s also a good idea to pack a spare set of dry clothes in case you get wet or need to change. Having additional clothing options handy will ensure you stay comfortable throughout the journey.

Next, let’s explore the appropriate swimwear for your boat trip.

Swimwear is an essential component of any boat trip, as you’ll likely be tempted to take a dip in the water at some point. Opt for swimwear that provides both comfort and functionality.

If you’re planning on swimming or engaging in water activities, choose swimwear with secure and adjustable straps or drawstrings. This will keep your swimwear in place even during vigorous movements or jumps into the water.

Men can opt for swim trunks or board shorts that offer a comfortable fit and quick-drying properties. Look for options with built-in mesh lining for additional support and breathability.

Women have a variety of swimwear styles to choose from, including one-piece swimsuits, bikinis, or tankinis. Opt for designs that allow for unrestricted movement and provide adequate support. Consider choosing swimwear with UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) properties to shield your skin from harmful UV rays.

Regardless of the style you choose, it’s essential to select swimwear that makes you feel comfortable and confident during your boat trip.

Now that we’ve covered swimwear, let’s move on to the next important element of your boat trip attire – footwear.

Choosing the right footwear for your boat trip is crucial for both safety and comfort. The type of footwear you select will depend on the nature of your boat trip and the activities you plan to engage in.

If you’re on a leisurely boat trip or simply relaxing on the deck, opt for comfortable and slip-resistant sandals or boat shoes. Look for options with rubber soles for good grip and traction, ensuring stability on wet surfaces. Sandals with adjustable straps or fasteners will help secure your feet and prevent them from slipping out.

If you’re participating in water sports or engaging in activities that require more foot protection, consider wearing water shoes. Water shoes are designed to provide maximum comfort and protection while allowing water to easily flow in and out. They typically have quick-drying features and a sturdy sole to protect your feet from rocks or other objects in and around the water.

Avoid wearing flip-flops or open-toed sandals, as they may not provide the necessary support and can easily slip off your feet, increasing the risk of injuries.

Remember, the key is to choose footwear that is comfortable, durable, and suitable for the activities you plan to engage in during your boat trip.

Now that we’ve covered swimwear and footwear, let’s move on to another important accessory for boat trips – headwear.

Protecting your head from the sun’s rays is crucial during a boat trip. The combination of reflected sunlight and the absence of shade out on the water can expose your head and face to harmful UV rays. Wearing proper headwear can provide essential sun protection and keep you comfortable throughout your journey.

One of the most popular and effective choices for headwear is a wide-brimmed hat. A hat with a wide brim will provide shade not only for your face but also your neck and ears. Look for hats made from lightweight, breathable materials such as straw, cotton, or nylon. This will allow air to circulate and prevent your head from getting too hot.

For those engaging in water activities or expecting windy conditions, consider a hat with a chin strap or toggle to keep it securely in place. This will prevent your hat from blowing away or falling into the water.

If you prefer a secure fit and added protection, consider wearing a cap or a visor. These options are especially suitable for those involved in water sports, as they provide shade and help keep water out of your eyes.

Remember, it’s essential to select headwear that provides adequate sun protection and fits comfortably throughout your boat trip.

Now that we’ve covered headwear, let’s explore the importance of layering options during your boat trip.

Layering Options

Layering your clothing is essential for boat trips, as it allows you to adjust your outfit according to changing weather conditions. Whether you’re facing a chilly breeze or a sudden temperature drop, having the right layers will ensure your comfort throughout the journey.

Start with a moisture-wicking base layer that helps regulate body temperature and keeps you dry. This could be a lightweight long-sleeved shirt or a breathable thermal top, depending on the expected weather conditions.

Next, add a mid-layer for insulation. A fleece jacket or a lightweight sweater can provide an extra layer of warmth while allowing for easy movement. Look for options that are easy to pack and can be easily removed or tied around your waist if you get too warm.

If you’re facing more extreme weather conditions, it’s a good idea to have a waterproof and windproof outer layer. A waterproof jacket or a windbreaker with sealed seams will help keep you dry and protect you from the elements.

Layering allows you to adjust your clothing to the changing weather and allows you to easily adapt to different temperatures or activities during your boat trip.

Now that we’ve discussed layering options, let’s move on to the importance of protective gear.

Protective Gear

Protective gear is essential for ensuring your safety during a boat trip, especially when engaging in water sports or activities that have inherent risks. Here are some important protective gear items to consider:

Life Jackets: Life jackets are a must-have safety item on any boat trip. Make sure to have enough properly fitted life jackets for every passenger on board. Ensure that they are in good condition, properly fastened, and meet the appropriate safety standards.

Sunscreen: Protecting your skin from the harmful effects of the sun is crucial, especially when spending extended periods of time on the water. Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a high SPF rating and reapply it regularly throughout the day.

Sunglasses: Invest in a good pair of sunglasses with UV protection to shield your eyes from the sun’s rays and reduce glare on the water. Look for sunglasses with polarized lenses for better visibility and clarity.

First Aid Kit: It’s always wise to have a well-stocked first aid kit on board to handle minor injuries or emergencies. Include essentials like adhesive bandages, antiseptic wipes, pain relievers, bandages, and any necessary personal medications.

Remember, safety should be a top priority during your boat trip. Take the necessary steps to protect yourself and your fellow passengers by using appropriate protective gear.

Now that we’ve covered protective gear, let’s move on to the importance of accessories during a boat trip.

Accessories

Accessories can both enhance your style and provide practical benefits during a boat trip. Here are some essential accessories to consider:

Sunhat: In addition to headwear, a sunhat can provide extra shade and protection for your face and neck. Look for hats with UPF ratings to ensure maximum sun protection.

Sun Protection Clothing: Consider investing in clothing with built-in sun protection, such as UPF shirts and pants. These garments offer added protection against harmful UV rays, especially for areas of your body that may not be covered by sunscreen.

Waterproof Bag: Keep your belongings safe and dry by using a waterproof bag or dry sack. This is particularly important if you’ll be carrying valuable items, electronics, or extra clothes.

Sun Sleeves or Gloves: If you’re worried about sun exposure on your arms or hands, consider wearing sun sleeves or gloves. These accessories provide protection without compromising mobility.

Floatation Devices: If you plan to spend time in the water, inflatable floatation devices like noodles or inner tubes can offer extra buoyancy and support while you relax or swim.

Remember, accessories not only add style but can also provide practical benefits and enhance your overall boat trip experience.

Now that we’ve covered accessories, let’s move on to the importance of choosing the right fabrics for your boat trip attire.

Choosing the Right Fabrics

The choice of fabrics plays a crucial role in ensuring comfort and functionality during your boat trip. Here are some factors to consider when selecting the right fabrics for your attire:

Quick-Drying Materials: Opt for fabrics that dry quickly to prevent discomfort from dampness. Fabrics like nylon, polyester, and blends are known for their quick-drying properties, making them ideal for boat trips.

Moisture-Wicking Fabrics: Look for fabrics that wick away moisture from your skin, keeping you cool and dry. Moisture-wicking fabrics, such as polyester blends or specialized performance fabrics, help to regulate your body temperature and prevent sweat build-up.

Breathable Fabrics: Choose fabrics that allow air circulation to keep you cool in hot weather. Cotton, linen, and lightweight synthetics like rayon are breathable options that help to prevent overheating.

UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) Fabrics: Protect your skin from harmful UV rays by opting for fabrics with a high UPF rating. These fabrics are specially designed to block the sun’s rays and provide added sun protection.

Durable and Sturdy Fabrics: Select fabrics that can withstand the rigors of a boat trip, including exposure to saltwater, wind, and abrasion. Look for sturdy materials that resist tearing and fading, ensuring longevity and durability.

Considering these factors will help you choose fabrics that offer the right combination of comfort, protection, and performance during your boat trip.

Now that we’ve discussed fabric choices, let’s conclude our comprehensive guide on what to wear on a boat trip.

Choosing the appropriate clothing for a boat trip is essential for ensuring comfort, protection, and enjoyment during your adventure. By considering the specific needs of your trip and the activities you plan to partake in, you can dress in a way that allows you to make the most of your experience.

Prioritize comfort by selecting lightweight and breathable fabrics that allow for ease of movement. Opt for quick-drying materials that will keep you comfortable even if you encounter water during your journey.

Swimwear should be functional and secure, allowing you to enjoy water activities with confidence. Footwear should provide stability and grip, ensuring safety on wet surfaces. Don’t forget to protect your head and face from the sun’s rays with a wide-brimmed hat or a cap with UV protection.

Layering options are crucial for adapting to changing weather conditions, while protective gear such as life jackets, sunscreen, and sunglasses should never be overlooked for ensuring safety during your trip.

Accessories can enhance both style and functionality – consider investing in a sunhat, sun protection clothing, a waterproof bag, and other items that suit your needs. Lastly, choosing the right fabrics is key, with quick-drying, moisture-wicking, breathable, and UPF-rated fabrics being ideal choices.

By carefully selecting your boat trip attire, you can have a comfortable and enjoyable experience, free to fully immerse yourself in the beauty of the water and the adventure that lies ahead.

So, gear up with the right clothes and accessories, and get ready to step onto the boat with confidence and style!

Table of Contents

Tips for What to Wear on a Boat

  • Keep it simple. While there’s nothing wrong with dressing “extra,” a boat is not the best place for an over-the-top look. This is because of the various elements you may encounter, like stronger winds and splashes (you are on the water, after all!). You don’t want to be fussing with your outfit or feeling uncomfortable when you’re trying to enjoy the ride.
  • Consider your footwear. Unless you’re going to a dressy boat party, I recommend sticking with flat sandals – preferably non-slip, waterproof ones. You’ll want to feel steady aboard the boat, even if the waters get choppy. Plus, if you’re going to be taking a dip in the water. You won’t want to ruin any leather or suede sandals by getting them wet. There are many fantastic flat rubber and jelly sandals you’ll find throughout this post that are ideal for a boat day. Also, certain boats like yachts may require removing your shoes altogether.
  • If you’ll be boating in the evening, bring a lightweight jacket, sweatshirt, or wrap because it can get quite chilly out on the water. It also tends to feel windier (compared to land), so having something to bundle up in is crucial.
  • If you are boating during the daytime, bring a hat and sunglasses . You won’t be able to enjoy your boat ride if you have to squint in the sunlight. A hat will help protect your face from harmful UV rays. (Just avoid wide brim hats or anything that fits loosely, as the wind can catch these and blow them away.)
  • Don’t forget to bring sunscreen ! A sunburn can easily happen while you’re out at sea. So protect your skin by slathering on the SPF, even if you won’t be sunbathing.
  • Bringing a change of clothes (and a towel) might be a good idea. If you’re going to be swimming during your boat excursion. There’s nothing worse than being stuck in wet clothes!

Effortless Boat Outfit: blue bikini set, white bucket hat, blue and white striped mini dress, straw basket bag and blue slide sandals

While we love to dress up, a boat ride should be relaxing (and fun!). You don’t want to get so caught up in the details of your outfit that you lose focus of the activity at hand. That’s why a relaxed, effortless outfit that doesn’t require a lot of thought is often best for boat rides.

A breezy cover-up dress like this blue and white striped dress is easy to put on and off over your swimsuit. Its lightweight woven material will help you beat the heat, too.

Waterproof sandals like these single-band slide sandals are uncomplicated, functional, and easy to slip on and off – plus, they match the blue color palette of this outfit.

You can choose a classic feel with a neutral or striped set or go bold with a bright color like this turquoise poplin set. Not only is it trendy, but it’s perfect for relaxing thanks to the oversized fit of the shirt and the pull-on design of the shorts. This features a comfy elasticized waist and breathable fabric.

I love dressing on theme depending on where I’m headed, and it doesn’t get more nautical than navy and white stripes. This Johnny-collar button-up striped sweatshirt looks like it was made for sailing. Its lightweight material is ideal for a summer evening spent on the water. Pair it with some matching navy-colored chino shorts and white low-top sneakers for a sporty vibe.

A large straw shopper tote is functional and fits the nautical aesthetic of this outfit, while this embroidered “Montauk Sailing Club” baseball cap will make you look like a seasoned sailor!

6. An All-Day Affair

All Day Boat Outfit Idea: blue swimsuit, white cover up beach pants, straw visor, oversized sunglasses, white slide sandals and a blue tote bag

  • Bag (Similar)
  • Sandals (Similar)

If you’re planning on spending a full day on a boat , you’ll want to dress comfortably (but still stylishly, of course). I’d recommend some breezy wide-leg linen pants as a cover-up over a swimsuit, like this blue cut-out one-piece . The pants have side slits for added flair, and also give them an extra breezy feel.

Keep things simple with white waterproof slide sandals , and consider a straw visor to shield you from the sun while also looking chic. Oversized sunglasses (these have blue gradient lenses to match the swimsuit) make for both a practical and glam accessory.

You’ll want to bring a large bag to carry your day-long boat essentials, like sunscreen and a sweater. This blue circle rope tote bag will hold everything you need while combining the ensemble with its color scheme.

7. Cute Boat Outfit

Cute Boat Outfit: striped romper, white cat eye sunglasses, straw bag, and espadrille slide sandals

For a cute outfit to wear on a boat ride where you won’t be swimming or sunbathing, this striped romper will do the trick. This romper has a nautical vibe thanks to its gray and white striped print and lightweight fabric. It is sure to look adorable in photos you take while on board.

Play up its summery feel by wearing it with some flat espadrille slide sandals , white cat-eye sunglasses , and a woven straw top-handle bag .

This outfit is perfect for a boat ride during which you hang out with friends or family, head to lunch, go sightseeing, or take a sunset cruise.

8. Glam Boat Outfit

Glam Boat Outfit: cover up dress, straw wide brim hat, black sunglasses, straw tote bag, gold anklet and black chainlink sandals

  • Cover-Up Dress

Want a glam outfit to make you feel *fancy* while on a boat? Even if you aren’t going to be spending your day on a yacht, you’ll feel in this glam look. (Though if you are going on a yacht, this outfit is especially perfect!)

A subtly-sexy cover-up dress to wear over your swimsuit. This sheer crochet dress will make a significant statement thanks to its open back, side slits, and slight shimmer.

Up the glamour with a straw wide-brim hat and dark, oversized sunnies for a chic touch. This modern black straw tote bag will easily hold all of your belongings while looking elevated.

Complete the look with some practical yet luxe-looking chainlink jelly sandals . Add a bit more bling by wearing a gold chain anklet set .

9. Casual All White Boat Outfit

Casual All White Boat Outfit: white bikini set, colorful beaded necklace, white Terry cloth shirt and shorts set, and white Birkenstock sandals

People love to throw white parties during the summertime, especially on boats. If you score an invite to a casual white party, or if you want to make a statement in a monochromatic white look. Try this terrycloth shorts and shirt co-ord set .

Terry cloth is ideal for boating (along with going to the beach and pool). Thanks to its absorbent fabric, the white-on-white palette looks extra fresh. Wear the set over a white bikini or one-piece swimsuit, and opt for some white rubber sandals , like this comfy waterproof pair with a footbed.

Add a hint of color with a trendy colorful beaded necklace to give your monochromatic outfit a little pop.

10. Dressy All White Boat Outfit

Dressy Boat Outfit: white long dress, white low espadrilles

  • Espadrilles

Similarly, if you’ve received an invite to an all-white party on a boat with a more formal dress code , this look is going to dazzle. (You can also wear this to a boat party in general – it doesn’t have to require a white dress code for you to wear this outfit!).

Turn heads in this white, tiered maxi dress with a halter neck and plunging neckline. It’s made from a linen-look material that is airy and light. Accessorize with gold jewelry like stacked bracelets and drop earrings; these earrings feature faux pearls and shells for a beachy look.

Add in straw details to keep the outfit summery and boat-appropriate like a faux leather and straw crossbody bag with gold chain and white lace-up woven espadrille sandals .

What to Wear on a Boat – Outfits to Inspire You

Have you been invited to a friend’s sailboat or motor yacht? Are you wondering what you should wear and what type of footwear and accessories you should bring?

We typically wear casual and comfortable clothing on a boat, such as sundresses, shorts, and tank tops. Swimwear is also common, especially if the boat has a swimming area or if the weather is warm.

It is important to choose clothing that is appropriate for the weather conditions and activity level, as well as clothing that is not too bulky or restrictive. Also, it’s a good idea to wear a hat, sunglasses, and sunblock for protection from the sun.

There is no specific clothing to wear on boats, but there are garments that are better suited for the elements that you will possibly face while on a boat excursion.

There are a few factors that will help you to choose your clothing, footwear, and accessories. First, what type of boat are you going to be on, and the second thing to keep in mind is the weather forecast. The best way to prepare for your boat trip is to be aware of the weather forecast and elements: rain, wind, swell, and sun exposure, for example.

Go-To Brands for Boat Clothing

These brands offer a variety of clothing items specifically designed for boating and other water-based activities, such as quick-drying shirts, shorts, swimwear, and life jackets. They often feature specialized materials and technologies to provide protection from the sun, wind, and water.

  • Helly Hansen
  • Henri Lloyd

I have put together some outfits that are practical and that look good for a sailing adventure, a yacht day, a cruise ship, or a sport boat outing.

Ahoy Sailor

For sailing, it’s best to wear comfortable and suitable clothing that allows for ease of movement. These may include:

  • Lightweight tops, such as T-shirts or tank tops,
  • Quick-drying shorts or pants,
  • Sun-protective clothing, such as long-sleeved shirts or rash guards,
  • A hat or visor for sun protection,
  • Deck shoes or boat shoes (if shoes are allowed on the sailboat),
  • Lightweight waterproof or water-resistant jacket or windbreaker.

A motor yacht typically has more indoor space or shaded areas to stay out of the sun, but you will still be exposed to sun rays and UV protector gear is highly recommended.

What you wear on a yacht can vary depending on the setting and occasion, but often leans towards smart casual or semi-formal attire.

  • Khaki pants or shorts
  • Polo shirts or blouses
  • Light jackets or cardigans
  • Sandals or boat shoes
  • Sunglasses and a hat for sun protection

For more formal or upscale events, you may opt for evening wear, such as cocktail dresses or dress pants and blouses. It is important to dress appropriately for the occasion and check with the host or captain.

Cruising Along

The clothing you wear on a cruise ship can vary depending on the itinerary, destination, and activities planned, but often includes a mix of casual and dressier outfits.

  • Casual wear such as sundresses, shorts, and tank tops for more relaxed activities and excursions.
  • Dressier outfits, such as slacks or skirts and blouses, for formal dinners and events.
  • Swimwear for pool or beach activities.
  • Light jackets or sweaters for cooler weather or air-conditioned areas.
  • Comfortable shoes for walking and excursions.
  • Sun-protective clothing, such as hats, sunglasses, and sunblock.

It is important to dress appropriately for the activities planned, as well as any specific dress codes indicated by the cruise line. Some cruises may have designated formal nights or theme parties, for which more formal or elaborate attire may be required.

  • Quick-drying shorts or pants
  • Sun-protective clothing, such as long-sleeved shirts or rash guards
  • A hat or visor for sun protection
  • Deck shoes or boat shoes

When you are participating in high-speed water sports, it is recommended to wear a life jacket or personal flotation device.

Sarongs Are the New Skirts: 8 Ways to Wear Them for Effortless Summer Style

boat trip wear

OAS Company / Andrea Iyamah / Beek Shop / Byrdie

In This Article

Summer is almost here, which means it's time to plan travel-ready outfits that you'll love long after your vacation comes to an end—and we're here to argue that sarongs can be the new skirts when styled well. You've probably most often seen sarongs tied around the waist as a beach cover-up over swimwear, but we also think they have major potential to add a breezy elegance to all your favorite warm-weather looks. A sarong is a versatile closet essential with so many styling options : There are ways to wear it around the city, for nights out, and more. Ready to give this piece a truly groundbreaking, trend-forward twist? Read on for eight ways to style a sarong this season to elevate your summer style.

Summer Indie Sleaze

Good American / All Saints / Byrdie

Styling a monochromatic look is a foolproof way to look put-together, even when you're lounging by the pool. With " messy girl spring " kicking off an indie sleaze revival that seems set to continue through summer, this all-black ensemble by Good American will keep you on-trend while you soak up the sun. Style with an on-trend woven tote to carry all your seaside party girl essentials.

From Beach to Brunch

If you're looking for swimwear that can work overtime, you've come to the right place. This one-piece swimsuit by Andrea Iyamah doubles as a bodysuit and pairs beautifully with a printed sarong. Style this with your favorite sandals and complete the Positano-inspired look with a summer satchel.

Keep It Classic

Solkissed / Solid and Striped / Monica Vinader

You'll never regret investing in a classic mini sarong. Exude confidence and style at your next summer soirée in a black one-piece styled with an elegant matching wrap. Complete the look with silver accessories to add a little dimension to your all-black outfit .

Skims / Robin Piccone / Otra Eyewear

If you're into minimalistic styles and neutral tones , this Skims sarong is a must-have in your closet. It's dressy enough to wear on its own as an everyday look, and casual enough to layer over your favorite swimsuit at the beach.

Robin Piccone

OAS Company / Andrea Iyamah / Beek Shop

If you're looking for an unexpected way to style your sarong, try wearing it as a dress instead of a skirt. Head from the beach to dinner in this gorgeous hand-printed sarong then slick your hair back for a more polished look to dress up your outfit.

Less Is More

Revolve / Oseree / Shopbop

The micro mini skirt trend is still going strong, and a smaller sarong can be an ideal low-stakes way to test it out since you can try it poolside or at the beach. We love this style by Kulani Kinis, which pairs well with a shimmering swimsuit.

Crochet Chic

Revolve / Jade Swim

Crochet has become the must-have material of the season. For a sheer look that provides both fashion and function, opt for a crochet maxi skirt like this one by Beach Riot. Pair it with a mismatched crochet top for a little extra coverage.

More to Come

Structure Play

Maisonette / Favorite Daughter / Eric Javits

Can't decide whether you want to embody the office siren aesthetic or carefree summer vibes? Embrace both by pairing a sunny sarong with a structured blazer. Top the look off with an oversized sunhat for dramatic effect.

What To Wear On A Boat Ride – Set Sail In Style!

What to wear on a boat ride

If you’re planning a trip on the water, consider your outfit carefully if you want to have a good time onboard with your friends. Yes, clothes can affect your comfort, safety, and enjoyment. So you better know what to wear on a boat ride. But no worries, here is an ultimate guide to help you make the right choice and ensure you’re ready for an unforgettable and safe boat trip.

What To Wear On A Boat Ride

A hat made of polyester material can be your best bet for boating. This fabric does an excellent job at repelling moisture and, therefore, will keep you well protected from the water and sun. The winds at sea are stronger, and the sun is intense, so it’s important that the hat has a string to make sure it doesn’t blow off of your head and that the brim is wide enough to protect your head, neck, and ears from UV rays. You may want to take a look at this article about the top-rated hats for sun protection to help you make the best choice for your needs.

Sun Protection

As I mentioned above, the sun is powerful in the summer, but at sea, you don’t feel the heat as much as you do on land due to the winds and water splashing, which creates a pleasant airflow sensation. Yes, it’s refreshing, but it can be very dangerous. Also, the water reflects on the water, making the sun’s rays even stronger on your skin. In short, you should never go boating or swimming without applying sunscreen cream. Something worth mentioning is that sunscreens tend to leave oily stains on boat seats and also cause damage to the ocean. So it would be best to choose a sunscreen with a high level of sun protection (30, 50, or 100) that is free of oxybenzone.

Footwear choice is extremely important when it comes to boats. Opt for water shoes , boating sandals , or boat shoes . They need to be comfortable, breathable, and constructed with fabric that dries fast. However, no matter the type of footwear you choose, make sure they have a non-marking and anti-slip sole to not mark the deck or, worse, fall over.

Best boat shoes for men

Shorts are fantastic to wear on boat rides, especially in the summer. They keep you aerated and comfortable throughout the trip. You can even swim in your shorts, and no one will be aware of it. Plus, they dry relatively fast, which allows you to go hiking or stroll around towns after the trip. Polyester with SPF 50 is the best material for boat shorts as it dries quickly, provides a high level of sun protection, and repels water.

Long Sleeve T-Shirts

Opt for long sleeve T-shirts to protect your body and arms from the sun. Yes, sunscreen provides good protection against UV rays, but it’s not enough because the sun is much stronger than you may think. So another layer of protection will keep your skin free of burns and safe. Plus, mornings and evenings are pretty cool at sea.

Light Jacket

A light jacket is always good to have to keep you warm on a windy and cool evening. Remember, winds are stronger at sea, and in the evening, they are even stronger. Try to opt for a waterproof and windproof jacket to protect you from the winds and water.

Swimwear on a boat is a must. Period! Unless it doesn’t bother you to go swimming in your underwear or with your clothes on. For the most part, on a boat, you suck up the sun, jump in the water, and explore the underwater world with a snorkel mask on. So bring it with you, and I would even suggest getting another swimwear spare in case you want to change. Oh, and don’t forget your swimsuit cover-up , either. It can help you stay nice and cool under the intense sun.

What To Wear On A Boat Ride In Fall

Get your hands on a rain jacket that protects you from both wind and water and offers high levels of breathability as well. These types of rain jackets can be ideal for autumn boating ease and relaxation.

Rain suits can provide you with top-notch protection from aggressive fall elements. Look for a waterproof suit that’s made out of hard-wearing material such as PVC.

Bibs, sometimes called salopettes or sailing bibs, are pants that come with shoulder straps, and since they are water-resistant, they offer excellent protection against water and winds. It’s one of the best choices for people who go boating in the fall.

A hat made of synthetic material can be your best bet for the fall season. Because synthetic sailing hats are waterproof and repel water exceptionally well instead of socking it, they’ll do a great job at keeping your ears and head warm during your fall boating trips.

Slip-resistant neoprene deck shoes or water shoes can come in handy for autumn boating requirements. Neoprene is a great material for insulation. It can help people keep their toes and feet nice and dry as well. If you want to invest in footwear that’s not slick, you should explore neoprene options that are on hand to you.

What If You Go On A Boat Ride In Cold Weather?

Waterproof and windproof jackets can keep you warm during boat rides. They can fight snow, rain, and mist. Look for jackets with adjustable cuffs that can seal in warmth.

Fishing bibs offer comfort and can safeguard winter boaters from wind, rain, and dampness overall. They offer insulation, too.

Concentrate on polyester, nylon, or polypropylene base layers for thermal wear . These layers wick away moisture and keep the body warm. Merino wool also makes an excellent base layer material. It regulates the temperature of the body and protects it from overheating while keeping it dry.

Wear a windproof thermal face mask cover . It can keep your full face and head warm. Although it can promote warmth, it still offers breathability.

Wear thermal underwear. Thermal wear, in general, can be beneficial for outdoor activities. If you want to trap body heat, thermal underwear can help you.

Wool socks can often offer temperature regulation that’s natural. Since they’re thick, they can help you maintain warm feet and toes for a while. They offer warmth and wick away sweat. They insulate well, too.

Invest in deck boots with non-slip and non-marking soles. Non-slip boots can protect you from deck falls and injuries. Since they have rubber outsoles, they offer excellent grips that can protect you any time you walk on slick surfaces.

Non-marking boots are flat and devoid of cleats. They typically have rubber soles that, unlike leather ones, won’t create deck marks.

Pick deck boots that are water-repellent. They can help you maintain warm, dry feet for hours. Also, go for deck boots that have breathable linings that promote breathability and ample warmth.

Gloves that grip well and that are made out of thermal materials such as neoprene are essential, too. Neoprene gloves consist of breathable materials that dry quickly. They offer strong insulation and can safeguard warmth in times of dampness.

Foul weather gear that promotes dryness, in general, is vital. Look for sailing boots and gloves that are labeled as being ideal for foul weather use.

Accessories You Need On A Boat Ride

Polarized sunglasses.

Wearing Polarized sunglasses is extremely important on a boat ride because the UV rays reflect off the surface of the water and can damage your precious eyes if you don’t wear any. Polarized sunglasses block the glare, helping you to see better and reduce eye strain, not to mention they give you a nice look! So my advice is to never get on board without your sunglasses.

Polarized sunglasses for boating

Waterproof Dry Bags

One of the most important accessories when boating is a waterproof dry bag . A dry bag will protect all your belongings from the water and keep all your content safe and dry. Those bags are lightweight by nature, and they come in different sizes to suit your needs. They are easy to use; you just fill out your bag, roll it down, secure it, and you can be sure that not even a drop of water will get inside when you are out on the water.

Yes, you can count on it to make your boat ride hassle-free and enjoyable, as you don’t have to worry about your stuff getting wet.

Waterproof Dry bagpack

Life Jacket

A life jacket is a must on a boat; it’s required by the law. If you are underway, you should wear a life vest and preferably one that is comfortable, and that works properly. So never forget your life jacket, as it can save your life!

Life jacket

Before you go on a boat ride, there are certain things you should know. Here are some excellent tips for you to have the best experience on your boat ride.

Bring only what you need. On a boat ride, you don’t want to be cluttered with too many things. Keep it simple, wear simple clothes. Believe it. You’ll have a far more enjoyable boating experience.

Mosquito Repellent: Usually, mosquitos are more active in the early morning or late evening. Hence carrying a small tube is recommended.

Seasickness: The movement of the boat can cause stress on your balance system, which can make you sick. In case you are a first-time traveler, carry these pills or wristbands as a precautionary measure.

Stay hydrated: Drink lots of water, and if you don’t like water, drink something else, apart, of course, from coffee and alcohol, as it dehydrates the body.

Sunscreen: I can not stress enough that you make sure you don’t forget your sunscreen; it will protect your skin while you enjoy your boat trip. There are great products on the market, so make your choice and pack it in your bag.

Final Words!

When boating, consider the weather, the activities you’ll be doing, and the type of boat you’ll be on when selecting your outfit. Opt for comfortable, practical, and weather-appropriate clothing, and don’t forget to protect yourself from the sun with sunscreen, sunglasses, and long-sleeve t-shirts. Happy boat ride!

Daniella, thanks for a list of what to take on a boat ride. I figured the swimsuit and cover up, but I can see where a jacket and the right shoes would be necessary. This is a really great list of supplies! I have only taken a few boat rides, but let me tell you, I could have used a gander at these supplies beforehand. Things like sunglasses and swimsuit, I had taken care of. However, I was missing the waterproof bag, which would have been really helpful. It’s definitely something I need to look into for next time! Great job and great post!

Yes, a dry bag is one of the most essential gears because it keeps every safe and dry, which is extremely important when out on the water.

Looking good is given when we’re choosing what to wear. But there are also considerations for boating activities that we should keep in mind. After all, you want to stand out, but not for the wrong reasons.

In this list, we’ll go over some things we need to consider when picking out clothes to wear on a boat. Consider these along with what clothes for boating look good, and you’ll be off to a great start.

Wearing something that looks good may mean having to put up with something less comfortable. While that may work for many situations, a boating trip may be a time where you should value a balance between looks and comfort.

Depending on the type of boat and the activity, the trip may not be the most comfortable ride, especially if you’re not used to it. Consider wearing something that can help you feel more at ease.

It’s also important to pick outfits that let you move around easily, especially if you plan to be more active on the trip. Clothing that’s too tight will hinder your movements, while extremely loose clothing can also be a problem.

This might be an obvious point to make, but the repercussions of mismatching your outfit with the weather can be rather extreme. Plan your clothing for both the season and the expected weather. It’s important to choose fabrics that keep you warm in cold weather and keep you safe from the sun and heat strokes during summer.

Safety is one of the most important things to consider when riding on a boat. Fortunately, there are accessories you can wear to keep yourself safe while looking good.

Wearing hats will help keep out the harsh sunlight, and a nice pair of sunglasses will shield your eyes from the intense blaze. Match your accessories to your boating needs.

Another important point to consider is wearing appropriate footwear. Depending on the boating activity, the boat deck may get wet, so be sure to wear non-slip soles to keep you on your feet. Fortunately, there is footwear that can help you look good but also maintain traction.

It’s important to dress for the occasion, and this applies to boating trips as well. A fishing trip will be one where you expect to get both the deck and yourself wet regardless of whether you’ll be doing the fishing, so dress with this in mind. On the other hand, dancing on a yacht cruise might mean wearing fancy suits or dresses.

Be sure to stay informed about the activities of the trip. By dressing to match the boating trip, you’ll be able to stay at the top of your game.

Unless you’re on a cruise or a luxury yacht, it’s safe to assume that you will probably get wet. It’s a good idea to consider this point when choosing what to wear.

Consider clothing that doesn’t get wet easily or something that does not retain water. Waterproof clothing tends to not look good, but loose-knit fabric may dry more quickly should you get wet. It’s also worth considering clothing that’s easy to change out of, so you can get dressed quickly.

Outfit Ideas What to Wear on a Boat

There are different types of hats to choose from, but whatever you choose, make sure it provides ample shade from the sun in addition to how good it looks. Go with a broader brim so that you’ll have protection for your head and face, but be sure to choose a tight fit so you don’t lose the hat to the wind.

Regular sunglasses are good to have on a boat, but polarized sunglasses will give you more comfort. The polarized lenses will reduce the glare from the intense sun, so having these will be beneficial, especially during summer. The UV protection these sunglasses offer makes them almost indispensable.

Shirt dresses are an excellent outfit choice for a boat trip, especially during summer. Their light fabric allows your body to keep cool during hot summer days, but the dress length and sleeves give ample protection against sunlight if you need extra coverage.

Since shirt dresses are one-piece clothing, it is easier to finish the look you’re going for. Because of the variety of styles and looks that different clothing lines offer, you won’t have to worry about being limited by a singular choice.

As an alternative, the sundress is another great consideration for your boating attire. It offers the same level of comfort and flexibility as a shirt dress but without sleeves. If you’re looking for a light dress style for your boating trip, both the shirt dress and the sundress are excellent dresses to wear on a boat, especially for the summer season.

Denim clothing has a reputation for being excellent active clothing, whether it’s for work or anything else. They’re easy to move around with, offer an excellent fit, and provide good protection against natural elements.

Another point for considering denim is that they don’t get caught on things on the boat. If you want to help with some work on the boat, denim pants are good to have on. Their only downside would be that they tend to hold water when wet.

For something that looks even better on a boat, consider white denim. Do note, however, that denim is not a good choice for small boats such as kayaks and canoes.

It’s very hard to find something to wear that is both functional and fashionable, right? Enter boat shoes. Also called deck shoes, these shoes have become popular footwear that is both comfortable and easy to sport.

It’s very easy to pair these shoes with different types of clothes, but the best part is that they shine on a boat, as you can tell by their name. With their non-skid rubber soles, these will keep you safe and stable on the deck of a boat regardless of the activity. They also fit right into the boat setting.

Just don’t let their reputation for being difficult to tie faze you. There are many ways of tying boat shoes, and many are simple. Just make sure that your pair has rubber soles instead of the more decorative leather ones, and don’t wear socks.

Now that you have a better idea of what to look for when choosing outfits for a boat ride, you can plan for the fun you’ll be in for on your boating day. Just remember to bring your sunscreen and you’re good to go.

I’m going on a photoshoot next week on a boat, and I’m looking for trendy clothes that will look great on photos. Thanks for telling me that I can keep things simple in order to make sure that I can get pictures that will make a statement for little effort. I think I’ll look for some clothing stores to buy from so I can coordinate my outfits the way I want the final output to look.

oman standing on bow of catamaran in sailing clothes

When you’re on the water, you have to dress for the elements and wear clothing you can easily maintain. What you wear sailing must allow you to be mobile while keeping you safe on the boat.

When living on a sailboat, there are three qualities you look for in clothing:

Bonus if it’s UPF 50+ for sun protection.

Below we’ll breakdown some of the best wardrobe choices for boat life and clothes for sailing.

Sailing Apparel and What Doesn’t Work Onboard

There are some clothes that don’t work on a sailboat. Before we get started, here are a few things not to bring.

COTTON – I love the feel of Pima cotton, but it’s too heavy and hard to dry in humid subtropical climates. Be wary of 100% cotton. Cotton blends are a good alternative for a comfy and cool garment. Quality synthetics are your new best friend.

SOLID LIGHT-COLORED CLOTHING – If you are moving about doing anything on a sailboat, you are bound to get something on you. Gravitating to garments with patterns, dark colors, or heathered colors is a great way to hide the inevitable stains from your boat life.

DELICATE MATERIALS – Materials such as silk, leather, and cashmere don’t have a place on a boat. Keep these beauties in storage to avoid ruining them for good. Although leather isn’t necessarily delicate, it is highly susceptible to mold.

What to Wear Sailing in the Summer

After cruising two summer seasons along the southeast coast, we’ve learned a few things about what to wear to stay cool in hot weather.

When I was downsizing, I kept many bathing suits, cute tops, and cotton shorts I thought I would wear on the boat — basically, what you would see in a lifestyle clothing ad. The reality was quite different.

Here are a few things we wear daily on the boat and why they work for sailing clothing.

Swim Leggings

These workout pants turned bathing suit bottoms are my go-to bottoms for my sailing outfit. Swim leggings are easy to wash and made of quick-dry fabric.

They are comfortable, allow you to move around, and (if it’s a scorching day) you are ready to jump in the water to cool off.

Features to Look for in Swim Leggings

Personal Preferences to Note

  • tight fit or looser fit – I prefer a tight fit like a bathing suit
  • capri vs. full-length leg – I have both, the only difference is applying a little more sunscreen

Swim Legging Brands

All my swim leggings are made by Sea Folly, but they are now harder to find and aren’t UPF-rated. I would suggest Coolibar’s Santa Cruz swim leggings . Their products are typically high-quality and durable for boat life.

  • Ideal for water activities such as swimming, surfing, snorkeling, waterskiing, and more
  • UPF 50+ sun protection, quick-dry fabric
  • Chlorine and saltwater resistent
  • High-rise fit

PRO TIP: Solid black leggings can heat up fast in direct sun. Opt for a pattern or lighter color if you want to avoid the extra heat.

Cardigan or wrap.

Whether packing for a sailing vacation or creating your liveaboard wardrobe, choose clothing for sailing you can layer. A lightweight cardigan is a summer staple while versatile for layering in the cooler winter months.

Features to Look for in a Wrap

Best sun wraps.

I fell in love with these sun wraps from Coolibar . Like most of their clothing, this piece is very well made. It is mostly a cotton bamboo blend, which means it is durable while still lightweight.

I have a few of these and wear one most days on the sailboat. The wraps hold up incredibly well; after many washes, they still feel and look brand new.

Performance Shirts

Also known as “fishing shirts,” these long sleeve shirts are lightweight, making them perfect for keeping you cool and dry. They are UPF-rated and are easy to wash. We usually pick these up at marinas or local shops along the coast. Here is a good example of a quality performance shirt.

For a more luxurious option, I recommend Free Fly’s bamboo performance shirts. These are super soft and breathable.

  • Quick dry, breathable performance outdoor shirt
  • Sun protection of UPF 50+
  • 68% Viscose from Bamboo, 29% Polyester, 3% Spandex

What to Wear Sailing in Cold Weather

We typically chase warm weather, but for colder climates or in the shoulder season, you’ll want a few basics to keep you warm.

woman on dolphin seat of catamaran wearing cool weather sailing clothes

A lightweight hoodie is great for keeping warm on a chilly day. They layer nicely under a jacket since they aren’t bulky like a traditional sweatshirt.

We love Kuhl’s pullovers. The fitted style, lightweight material, kangaroo pockets, and thumbholes in the cuffs are the most useful features. We’re also a fan of the heather colors for hiding stains.

Check out Kuhl’s Lea Pullover here .

Wool Base Layer

Wool base layers or leggings are a must-have for colder conditions on a boat. They have a snug fit and are usually merino wool for extra warmth. A typical wool base layer will keep you warm. I prefer a legging, which usually has a blend of merino wool, spandex, and either nylon or polyester.

I have a couple of wool leggings (or tights) from Smartwool (see photo above). They can be spendy, but if you can find something similar, I would snatch them up for sailing in colder temperatures.

It looks like Smartwool quit making their PhD Printed Tight. I was able to find one size left on Smartwool’s website here . This will help you get an idea of what you are looking for.

If it’s a chilly, windy day on the water, you’ll want a beanie to keep your noggin warm.

Knit beanies should provide enough warmth on a boat. Look for one with a fleece lining for extra warmth. Brands like Coal and The North Face will have good options.

After living in the Rockies for a decade, I have verified not all wool socks are created equal.

Smartwool socks are my go-to when I need my feet to stay warm and dry. Try their PhD Outdoor Light Crew socks for cooler days.

I’m cold-natured, and my feet are usually freezing when the temps start to drop on the boat. When we are out in chilly weather, I will sometimes wear my slippers for days.

Make sure to get some with tread to avoid sliding all over the boat. Slippers in a bootie style will also keep your ankles warm!

What Shoes to Wear Sailing

There are a lot of shoes that can be decent sailing footwear. Depending on what you find comfortable, here are a few things to look for.

A pair of water-resistant trainers will usually work for sailing. A lot of folks also like Keens since they have the feel of a sandal and will protect your toes. We often sail barefoot, but we know our boat well.

One of our favorite brands for everyday living onboard is Olukai. Most of their shoes are water-resistant or waterproof.

All of Olukai’s boots, slip-ons, and sandals are non-marking. They are known for their drop-in heels that allow you to convert to a slip-on for a more casual feel. Check out all Olukai footwear on their site .

Waterproof Sailing Boots

If you anticipate sailing in cold, wet climates, it would be worth investing in a pair of quality waterproof boots.

Best Sailing Boots

We haven’t tried these yet, but we have heard good things about Xtratuf’s deck boots . You can find the ankle boots for men and women below.

Xtratuf Men's 6 Inch Ankle Deck Boot

PRO TIP: Remember to avoid leather and suede when picking shoes for sailing.

Sailing outerwear to stay warm and dry.

When you’re living on a boat, it’s kind of like living outside. That’s why wearing layers of outwear is crucial to staying warm and dry onboard. Here are a few must-have outwear pieces we recommend.

Light Raincoat

A light raincoat is a must for summer sailing and exploring. Get something that rolls up small so you can easily take it on shore excursions.

Man at helm wearing lightweight rain jacket and waterproof hat.

Features to Look for in a Raincoat

Best choices for raincoats.

I like Marmot’s lightweight rain jacket that packs up small but still does a great job keeping water out.

If you want a thicker outer layer, Helly Hansen makes a great raincoat as well. Here is the men’s Helly Hansen Seven J Jacket (it’s also available in women’s).

Helly Hansen Men’s Windproof Rain Jacket

Fleece Coat

Do not underestimate the value of a warm fleece coat on a sailboat. It’s one of the most versatile items you can have in your wardrobe on a boat. Whether it’s a chilly morning at the helm or an evening walk, this coat will keep you warm and comfy.

Woman wearing fleece coat at helm of a sailing catamaran.

Features to Look for in a Fleece Coat

Best fleece coat.

The Patagonia Better Sweater Fleece has been my go-to coat for over five years. It’s incredibly durable and ideal for boat life.

  • Sweater-knit face with a soft fleece interior
  • Front zip-closure with three exterior pockets
  • Available in various colors and styles for men and women

'Better Sweater' Jackets by Patagonia

You can find the Women’s Better Sweater Fleece here . The men’s is available here in the lightweight version .

PRO TIP: Size up slightly to layer a hoodie underneath your fleece on cooler days.

Foul weather gear.

When you must be out in the elements, foul weather gear is essential. When it’s windy and wet, it can get cold quickly! A durable sailing jacket will keep you dry in heavy weather conditions.

Features to Look for in Wet Weather Gear

There are a few good foul wear gear brands on the market. We like Helly Hansen’s sailing jackets. Even though they are a bit pricey, when you need something to keep you warm and dry, you’ll be glad to have something that works.

We have the Helly Hansen Crew Midlayer Jacket. You can find the Men’s Crew Midlayer here and the Women’s Crew Midlayer here .

PRO TIP: Layer this waterproof jacket over your fleece when you need to bundle up.

We also have waterproof sailing pants onboard. I wouldn’t splurge on these unless you are planning to do a lot of offshore sailing. We have the Helly Hansen Voss pants and they’re worth it in cold, wet weather.

Helly Hansen no longer makes the Voss, but the similar Moss pants are available here .

Accessories for Your Head and Face

On the water, you expose yourself to direct sun rays from above and also reflective rays off the surface of the water.

We are usually most exposed to the sun’s rays from the neck up. Here are a few essential items of clothing to protect your head and face and prevent sun damage.

Wide-Brim Hat

A wide-brim sun hat is a piece of essential sailing gear in the summer on a boat.

Woman in hammock on boat bow wearing large wide brim hat.

Features to Look for in a Sun Hat

Good sun hat choices.

  • The Tilley Airflo sun hat checks all the above boxes hat. It will provide UPF 50+ sun protection, stay in place, and wick water in a summer rainstorm. You can check out the Tilley Airflo here .
  • Hemlock hats are a more affordable option. These have straw on top, so I prefer to wear a UPF bandana under these hats. Check out the Hemlock Lifeguard hats .

PRO TIP: I highly recommend a hat with an adjustable chin strap. I’ve tried hats with internal drawstrings, but I’ve lost those to a rogue gust of wind. There’s nothing more fun than trying desperately to chase down a hat on your 40-foot sailboat. Spoiler, you probably won’t retrieve it.

Some of our most delicate skin is from the neck up and is usually the most exposed to sun rays. UPF-rated bandanas will protect your face, head, and neck.

Woman on the bow of catamaran taking a selfie with bandana and sunglasses on.

Features to Look for in a Bandana

I live in the bandanas from Coolibar . They are made of soft, comfortable material and hold up well to boat life. Their 24 x 24 inch size is perfect for a versatile fit on your head, face, or neck.

During our ski bum days, we wore Buff’s head/face wear . Unlike the Coolibar bandana, these are an infinity loop and fit over your head to easily pull up around your face.

Coolibar UPF 50+ Unisex Virasana Performance Sun Bandana

BONUS: You can also wear these as a headband, hood, bandana, and more!

There are two schools of thought when it comes to sunglasses on a boat.

  • Choosing an affordable pair , so you aren’t out $200 if they fall in the water.
  • Or purchasing a high-quality polarized pair and taking steps to ensure they stay on your face and out of the drink.

I want to wear sunglasses that provide the best protection and performance when I’m outside on the water on hot sunny days.

Good Sunglass Brands

  • Maui Jim is my favorite brand for performance, comfort, and customer service. Their sunglasses are polarized with a lightweight glass lens, cutting down on glare and scratches.
  • Costa Del Mar is also a great brand and has a style that might be more appealing to men.

Of course, I don’t want to sacrifice my favorite sunnies to Neptune. So I use a sunglass retainer to make sure they stay attached. If you want to be extra careful , opt for the floating retainer.

PRO TIP: If you use a sunglass retainer, make sure the sunglasses are on your face and not hanging on your chest when you are sailing or underway. If you are reaching down in a locker or attaching the anchor bridle, you want to avoid getting them hooked on something.

For more guidance on choosing sunglasses, Life of Sailing has a great article on the 7 Best Sunglasses for Sailing .

Underwear Onboard

Merino wool is great for sailboat clothing, and underwear is no different.

I know, “Who wants to wear itchy wool underwear?” But merino wool is soft and naturally moisture-wicking, making it the best choice for function and comfort for sailing undergarments.

Merino wool also helps keep the wearer dry and comfortable, even in the humid conditions of a sailboat.

Best Features of Merino Wool Underwear

Additionally, merino wool is known for its odor-resistant qualities , making it a practical choice for life aboard, where you want to get the most wear out of your clothing.

Best Merino Wool Underwear Brand

My favorite merino wool underwear (by far) are the thongs made by Icebreaker. They’re comfy, soft, and breathable, hitting all the key features above.

Don’t worry ladies – they also make hipster and bikini underwear so you can choose your favorite style!

Icebreaker Merino Wool Thong

BONUS: These underwear are easy to handwash in a Scrubba bag or small tub and are quick to dry!

Bags on a sailboat.

Finding a purse that is both functional and fashionable was a challenge when I moved aboard. Ideally, you want to find a bag with the below characteristics that also fits your personal style.

  • big enough for the necessities, whether you’re at the dock going for a stroll or taking the dinghy to shore
  • stands up to the harsh marine environment
  • hands-free for transferring on and off the boat or dinghy
  • water-resistant (at minimum)

Here are a couple of examples of good options.

Water-Resistant Crossbody Bag

Haiku is an eco-friendly brand that uses recycled plastic water bottles to manufacture its bags. The water-resistant, crossbody style is practical for boat living.

Best Features of Sailboat Crossbody Bag

Haiku makes a few crossbody options. Check out their Revel Crossbody here .

Waterproof Crossbody Pouches and Backpacks

If you are looking for something genuinely waterproof – take a look at Booe. These bags are not only a great choice for exploring on land but also in a kayak, paddleboard, and other water adventures.

Best Features of Waterproof Crossbody Bag

  • 100% waterproof, one meter underwater for 30 minutes
  • Dedicated interior phone pocked with clear window
  • 7.5" width x 4.7" height x 1.5" diameter

Booe Waterproof Belt Bag Fanny Pack for Phone & Accessories

Unlike a typical dry bag, Booe uses a toothless zipper technology that allows you to easily access your items. These bags and backpacks are the best choice for boat life. It doesn’t hurt that they’re stylish too!

Final Thoughts on Clothing for Sailing

There are a lot of ideas out there about what sailing clothes are essential on a sailboat. Depending on where and how you are cruising will dictate what you can and can’t live without.

woman on front of catamaran in sun hat, swim leggings, and UPF top

On most days, I’m in swim leggings and a swim top with a sun wrap. When we go ashore, I shift to a lightweight fabric skirt and tank or tee with a sun wrap.

Determining what’s most comfortable for you on a typical day will help you keep your wardrobe small and efficient. Add items to protect you from the sun and weather, and you’ll have everything you need aboard.

Hi folks…this is the best article on this topic I have seen. There are tons of posts available on tools, boats etc, but something as mundane as which clothes to keep or select as you downsize to take off are less common. Thanks you for these helpful posts. As an aside, what new rig did you pick and why? JEB from Norfolk, VA

Thanks Jeb, we are so glad you found this article useful! And yes, clothes can definitely be something we overlook with all the other aspects of moving aboard.

We haven’t decided on a rig yet – since we have more experience this go around we are taking our time to find the perfect fit. We’ll definitely do a post or announcement when we make the purchase!

I love it! Thank you for giving us ideas. Most of us have a hard time going on vacation, so we want it to be memorable, ready, and look gorgeous. Thanks for this! Great article!

What to Wear for a Boat Party (Top Outfit Ideas!)

Get ready for your next boat party with our top outfit ideas! Find the perfect balance of style & comfort for both day & evening looks. Ideal for travelers.

boat trip wear

If you are invited to a boat party, the pressure is on you to find the perfect outfit. It can be tricky to dress for a boat party because you want to look stylish but also be comfortable and practical.

For women, wear comfortable flat shoes like Toms, sandals, or flip flops. For an outfit, women should wear a romper, wide leg pants, a skirt, or a jumpsuit. Accessorize with a hat or bandana. Guys should wear a light jacket or blazer, off-white trousers, with a button down or a polo shirt.

However, you may want to dress up a bit more for an evening boat party. A maxi dress or formal jumpsuit is always a good choice. A cute clutch and some statement jewelry will finish off your look perfectly. Gentlemen will look sharp with sports coats and dress pants.

This blog post will give you tips on what to wear for a boat or yacht party. We will help you choose clothes that will make you look and feel your best.

How Do You Choose the Right Outfit for a Boat Party?

boat trip wear

There are a few things to keep in mind when choosing your outfit for a boat party. First, you will want to consider the location of the party. If it is taking place on a yacht in the middle of summer, you will want to dress differently than if the party is taking place on a small boat in the fall.

The season and location will help you determine what kind of clothing to wear. You will also want to think about the activities that will be taking place at the party. If it is a more laid-back gathering, you can dress casually. But if there will be dancing or other activities, you will want to choose an outfit that is comfortable and will not get in the way.

Finally, you will  want to make sure your clothing is appropriate for the weather. You will want to wear light, airy fabrics if it is hot outside. But if it is cold or windy, you will want to dress in layers to stay warm.

What to Wear to a Boat or Yacht Party – General Daytime Pieces

Daytime looks for a boat or yacht party are all about being chic and stylish but also practical. You will want to choose clothes that are comfortable and will not get in the way if you need to move around.

boat trip wear

Anything made of linen will be perfect for a boat party as it is a natural fiber that breathes well. It is also wrinkle-resistant, so you will look good even if you have been dancing or moving around a lot. Linen is the absolute staple look of "fun on the water."

boat trip wear

A hat is a great way to protect your face from the sun and also add a bit of style to your outfit. If you are not used to wearing hats, now is the time to start! Choose a hat that matches your personal style, and do not be afraid to experiment.

Light-Colored Items

boat trip wear

Wearing light colors will reflect the sunlight, which is perfect for days spent on the water. Plus, the lighter coloring pairs with the overall aesthetic of partying on a boat. White is always a good choice, but feel free to experiment with other bright colors as well.

Preppy Pieces

boat trip wear

It is no secret that boat parties invoke a sense of "preppy style fashion" This can be anything from a seersucker dress to Panama hats. If you do not normally dress preppy, now is the time to try it out!

boat trip wear

Polarized sunglasses are a must for any boat party. Not only do they protect your eyes from the sun, but they also help you look cool and mysterious. Choose a pair of sunglasses that is comfortable to wear and that goes with your outfit.

Sweater or Stylish Windbreaker

boat trip wear

Even if it is warm out, it can get chilly on the water. Bring along a sweater or windbreaker to keep you comfortable. Choose a style that matches your outfit so you will still look good, even if you have to layer up.

Daytime Boat Party Looks for Women:

Daytime boat party looks for women can  be anything from casual to preppy to chic. It all depends on the vibe of the party and what you are comfortable wearing.

Rompers and Jumpsuits

boat trip wear

Rompers and jumpsuits are great options for a boat party because they are both fashionable and comfortable. They also will not get in the way if you want to dance or move around. Choose a romper or jumpsuit that is made of light, airy fabric to keep you cool in the summer heat.

A Matching Set

boat trip wear

A matching set is another great option for a boat party. It is easy to put together, and you will look put-together and on trend. Choose a set that is comfortable and made of light, airy fabric. Matching sets can be anything from a crop top and skirt to shorts and a button-down combo.

Long and Flowy Dresses

boat trip wear

Long, flowy dresses are perfect for a boat party. They also will not get in the way if you want to dance or move around. Plus, a longer dress will help avoid any unwarranted "Marilyn Monroe" moments on the windy open water.

Linen Pants

boat trip wear

If you are feeling the "cool girl" vibe on your boat party day, linen pants are the way to go. They are extremely comfortable while still giving an air of confidence and fashion.

Blue Striped Shirt (Women)

boat trip wear

There is something very nautical about pairing a horizontal blue-striped shirt with white pants. This is a timeless boat look that can be accessorized in many ways.

Wrap Skirts

boat trip wear

Pair a wrap skirt with your bikini top or a cute fitted tank for a boat party-ready look. Wrap skirts are easy to wear and are very flattering on most body types. They can also easily transition to evening wear with the right blouse.

boat trip wear

Wearing high heels on a boat is a recipe for disaster. Not only will you be more likely to trip and fall, but you will also sink into the deck or dock. Instead, opt for flat shoes like sandals, espadrilles, or ballet flats. They will be more comfortable and practical, and you will not have to worry about losing your balance.

boat trip wear

Even if you do not go for a swim, having your swimsuit on hand is always a good idea. You never know when you might want to jump in the water or take a dip in the pool. Most importantly, choose a swimsuit that you feel confident in. Depending on the look, you can pair it perfectly with your on-deck outfit with a stylish cover up or as a shirt.

Waterproof Makeup

boat trip wear

No one wants their makeup to melt or wash away while they are out on the water. Waterproof makeup is a must for any boat party. Choose products that will stay put in the heat and humidity and that will not come off if you get wet.

Oversized Straw Hats

boat trip wear

Straw hats are a summertime staple, and they are perfect for boat parties (while protecting your skin!). Choose an oversized hat for maximum sun protection and style.

Woven Purse

boat trip wear

A woven purse is a perfect accessory for a boat party. It is the perfect aesthetic for a daytime boat party; plus, it is big enough to fit all your essentials, like sunscreen, sunglasses, and waterproof makeup.

Daytime Boat Party Looks for Men:

Women do not get to have all the fun! There are plenty of top-notch daytime boat party looks for men.

A Seersucker

boat trip wear

A Seersucker, also known as "railroad stripe," is a puckered fabric that's perfect for summertime. A seersucker shirt is light and airy, which will keep you cool in the summer heat. Plus, it has a preppy look that is perfect for boat parties.

Chinos and Jacket

boat trip wear

This is a great option for men who want to look stylish but also be comfortable. The chinos will keep you cool, and the jacket will protect you from the sun or wind. Choose a light-colored chino so you do not get too hot, and make sure the jacket fits well, so it does not blow around in the wind.

While light-colored options are generally preferred, a navy chino also works in a boat environment. Just be sure to pair it with a lighter colored top.

Cropped Trousers and V-Neck T-shirt

boat trip wear

Cropped trousers are another iconic boat party look for men. It is comfortable and stylish, and it will not get in the way if you want to move around or dance. Pair it with a V-neck T-shirt for a relaxed yet put-together look.

Tailored Shorts and a Polo Shirt

boat trip wear

Choose light-colored and fitted shorts for a more "preppy" look. This is a particularly popular look for summer boat parties on the United State's northeast coast (i.e., The Hamptons, Martha's Vineyard, etc.). Choose a polo shirt that fits well and is made of breathable fabric. You do not want to be too hot while you are out on the water.

Half-Sleeved T-Shirt

boat trip wear

This is a bit more casual take on the previous look. However, you can also roll up the sleeves for an even more relaxed look. Half-sleeved T-shirts generally pair well with chinos or cropped trousers.

Loafers or Boat Shoes

boat trip wear

When attending a boat or yacht party, opt for loafers or boat shoes. They will be more comfortable and practical than your day-to-day shoes, and you will nt have to worry about losing your balance. Plus, they will help you look stylish and put-together. They are called "boat shoes" for a reason!

Panama Hats

boat trip wear

A Panama hat is a must for any summer boat party. These hats can easily be styled with casual shorts and a polo, or go "Riviera style with a linen suit.

These are some great looks for a daytime boat party. Whether you are going for a preppy look, or something more casual, make sure you choose comfortable and stylish clothing that will keep you cool in the summer heat. Do not forget to accessorize with Panama hats, straw hats, and boat shoes!

What to Wear to a Boat or Yacht Party – Evening

Evening looks for a boat or yacht party are a bit more formal, but that does not mean you can not have fun with your outfit. Look your best while still being comfortable at sea.

Evening Boat Party Looks for Women:

When the sun sets, it is time to step up your fashion game.

A Cocktail Dress

boat trip wear

If you are attending a more formal evening event, opt for a cocktail dress. Choose a style that flatters your figure, and that is made of light, airy fabric. You do not want to be too hot while you are out on the water.

A Little Black Dress

boat trip wear

A classic little black dress is always a good choice for an evening event. It is elegant and timeless, and it can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion.

Pearl Jewelry

boat trip wear

Nothing says "out to sea" like a set of pearls. They are elegant and classic, and they will help you look put together. You can even wear casual pieces with your daytime yacht look. Just make sure they are real pearls!

Statement Earrings

boat trip wear

If you are looking to add a little bit of sparkle to your outfit, opt for statement earrings. They will dress up any outfit, and they will help you stand out in a crowd. Just make sure they are not too heavy or bulky, so they do not weigh you down.

A Cute Clutch

boat trip wear

Evening boat parties are the perfect opportunity to bust out that cute clutch you have been dying to use. Choose a color or pattern that compliments your outfit, and make sure it is big enough to hold your essentials (phone, lip gloss, etc.).

Evening Boat Party Looks for Men:

Gentlemen, it is time to step up your style game with your evening boat party looks.

A Sport Coat or Blazer

boat trip wear

For a more upscale boat party, you can not go wrong with a sports coat or blazer. It is the perfect way to dress up your look without being too formal. You can even pair a blazer with a well-fitted T-shirt for a more stylish yet casual look.

Dress Pants and Jacket

boat trip wear

If you are attending a more formal evening event, opt for dress pants and a jacket. Choose light-colored pants, so you do not get too hot, and make sure the jacket fits well, so it does not blow around in the strong seaside wind. You can even pair a blazer with a well-fitted T-shirt for a more stylish yet casual appearance.

Button-Down Shirt

boat trip wear
