30 Facts You Didn’t Know about Canada

From its fascinating history to intriguing facts about its vibrant cities, let's explore 30 surprising details about this northern wonderland.

Frequently asked Questions about Touring Canada

To really get to know this glorious country - there is no better experience than the Grand Tour of Canada - journeying from East to West and encompassing a ride on the iconic Rocky Mountaineer train. Alternatively, you can choose to take time in the East - enjoying the cosmopolitan city of Toronto in our Toronto and Niagara Winter Escape or explore all the way up to Quebec City on our Eastern Splendours tour.

With its unspoilt natural wonders including crystal clear lakes like Lake Louise, deep and vast forests and mountainous backdrops - most visitors to Canada would agree that the highlight of Canada is the landscape itself. And let's not forget the bucket list experience of a visit to the spectacular Niagara Falls!!

However the cities of Canada deserve a mention here too - world famous for offering their residents high quality of life, clean living and vibrant, thriving environments. Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto and Quebec are places to behold.

The below guidelines apply mainly to the settled areas of southern Canada. Travellers heading to northern areas, such as the Yukon, the Northwest Territories, Nunavut and Labrador, should bring warm clothing for all but the summer months (and even in summer, at least a lightweight jacket is advisable)

For all months of the year, we recommend layers of clothing. This will allow for any change in weather conditions. Although most of Canada can enjoy warm summer temperatures, one waterproof top is always useful for occasional rain.

March: Moderate temperatures. Winter clothing with some medium weight clothing. April: Milder days but the evenings are cool. Medium weight clothing including a topcoat and umbrella is recommended. May: Warm days but cool at night. Medium weight and summer clothing recommended.

June: Warm, summer clothing with some medium weight clothing for cool evenings. The weather in June is ideal for travel and all outdoor activities. July/August: These are the warmest months of the year. Lightweight summer clothing is recommended.

September: Warm days and cool evenings. Light- to medium weight clothing recommended. October: Cool, with the first frost in the air. November: Cool to frosty. Medium- to heavyweight clothing is recommended. First signs of snow. December/January/February: Winter temperatures. Winter clothing is necessary (eg overcoat, hat, boots and gloves). Heavy snowfall in most provinces.

In the winter months it is useful to take sunglasses with you as the reflection of the snow can be a strain on the eyes. Rubber soled shoes are also recommended.

Canadian cuisine is as varied as the country. The colonial influence is still strong, with European menus available in all major cities. The French influence in Québec is easily discernible in the many restaurants that specialise in French cuisine. Areas where particular groups of immigrants have settled have their own distinct specialties; look for German-style cuisine in south-western Ontario, Ukrainian dishes on the Prairies and Asian foods in Vancouver, for instance. Waiter service in restaurants is common. Dress requirements and billing procedures vary. Imported European and 'New World' wines and spirits are widely available.

Specialities:

  • The hundreds of miles of coastline offer varied  seafood .
  • The central plains provide  first-class beef  and agricultural produce.
  • Some more  unusual games meats include elk, bison and caribou

As Canada is such a vast country (3,000 miles from coast to coast), it has been divided into time zones.

  • Toronto is 5 hours behind Greenwich Mean Time (GMT)
  • Montreal is 5 hours behind Greenwich Mean Time (GMT)
  • Calgary is 7 hours behind Greenwich Mean Time (GMT)
  • Banff is 7 hours behind Greenwich Mean Time (GMT)
  • Vancouver is 8 hours behind Greenwich Mean Time (GMT)

From April to late October, Canada adopts ‘daylight saving time’, which is equivalent to our British Summer Time, so the time ratios remain the same between the two countries.

From the city to the slopes: Discover Canada

Crystal-clear lakes, bustling metropolises and pristine mountainous beauty spots are all in easy reach on package holidays to Canada. Whether it's a city break in the French-speaking east, a skiing trip in the unspoilt Rockies, or an energetic hike on Vancouver Island, the largest country in the Americas is packed with activities for everyone.

Canada is famous for its snowy winters, making it the ideal spot for skiing. Outside of January, you might be surprised to find that Canada has a comfortable climate. Here are the best months for Canada holidays.

  • Days are longer in April and, with sunny blue skies, it's a great time for skiing. Visit the west coast for the most pleasant weather.
  • The weather starts to warm up in June and there are fewer crowds so it’s the ideal month for a relaxing break. You can also spot whales on the Atlantic coast at this time of year.
  • June through to August is peak summer for Canada, when you can expect the highest temperatures. There are plenty of summer festivals to check out.
  • The autumn months can get chilly but it stays fairly mild until late November. You also get to see the beautiful changing colours of the leaves – New Brunswick's a favourite for its gold and red foliage.

With snowy weather and lots of mountainous ground, Canada is one of the top countries in the world for skiing. There are plenty of resorts to explore for both pros on the slopes or beginners who fancy trying their hand.

  • Lake Louise, Alberta  has one of Canada's most reliable snow records and is easy to reach, at only two hours from Calgary Airport. For something a little different, take the nighttime snowshoe expedition – little ones will love it.
  • Whistler in British Columbia  has world-class skiing – it was the mountain host for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. The village is pedestrian-only, making for a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of urban life.

Canada is renowned for its vast swathes of wilderness, from frozen tundra to towering mountains. Even if you're on a city break, you're rarely far from undeveloped countryside.

  • Peyto Lake in  Banff National Park  is a must-see for nature lovers. You can get exceptional views just a short ten-minute hike from the car park so your trip can be as energetic or laid-back as you like.
  • For outdoor activities, head to Stanley Park,  Vancouver , where the mountains meet the sea. Visit in September to admire the changing colours of the scenery.
  • One of the most world-renowned natural sights in the country is the  Niagara Falls . The three waterfalls are right on the American-Canadian border, with Horseshoe Falls on the Canadian side, American Falls on the US side and Bridal Veil Falls split between the two. There's also a nature reserve where you can go geocaching or visit the butterfly conservatory (wear bright clothes if you want the butterflies to land on you).

Holidays to Canada aren’t all about mountains and wilderness; if you prefer your breaks at a slightly faster pace, there are plenty of fascinating cities to get to know.

  • Toronto  has been described as the Canadian version of NYC, thanks to its cosmopolitan shopping districts, world-class theatre and stunning skyline. The CN Tower is a great place to see the city from up high – give yourself at least three hours to make the trip as queues can be long.
  • Experience the laid-back chic of French Canada in  Montreal  – the largest francophone city in the world after Paris. Here, intimate bistros contrast with a vibrant club scene. Make sure you stop by the nineteenth-century Notre-Dame Basilica to see breath-taking art and architecture both inside and out.

From vibrant cities to rugged mountains, package holidays to Canada aren’t short of new places to explore and things to see. Plan your break now and book in at one of our  Canada hotels .

Frequently Asked Questions

What is canada known for.

Jaw-dropping scenery and friendly locals aside, Canada is known for a number of things…here’s just a few: Maple syrup – over 80 percent of the world’s maple syrup is produced here.

Ice Hockey – the country’s national winter sport, both the Canadian men and women’s teams consistently walk away with Olympic gold.

The Northern Lights – though visible in Iceland and Norway, tourists travel from all over the globe to Canada’s unspoilt wilderness to be mesmerised by the aurora borealis as it snakes across the sky.

Crystal waters – boasting some of the cleanest water on the planet, Canada has more lakes than all other countries in the world combined.

Where's the best place to view the Northern Lights in Canada?

With a rainbow of colours bouncing off the pristine cerulean lakes, the northern-most regions of British Columbia boast stunning backdrops for viewing aurora borealis, or make the journey into the remote wilderness of Saskatchewan and you’ll be rewarded with unbelievable views of this beautiful spectacle.

What's the food like in Canada?

Canada is known for a few foods – here’s three of the most popular dishes:

Poutine – this savoury dish consists of cheese curds, crispy fries and gravy, and can be topped with either pulled pork, bacon or smoked meats.

Salmon jerky – with a wealth of delicious seafood on offer, this dried to-go snack is a favourite among locals.

Butter tarts – a hugely popular sweet treat, these consist of a small pastry shell filled with egg, sugar, butter and syrup, baked until the top layer is crunchy.

With its combination of phenomenal landscapes, diverse cities, and the unerring charm of its locals and sleepy towns, America’s beautiful and polite cousin, Canada, should not be overlooked.

Why you’ll love Canada…

• Strolling along the cobbled streets of Quebec • Gazing up at the mighty Niagara Falls from the Maid of the Mist • Observing the humbling beauty of the aurora borealis • Catching an ice hockey game • Watching an evening light show at the picturesque Parliament Hill in Ottawa • Experiencing the highest tides in the world at the Bay of Fundy • Observing the dramatic Canadian Rockies aboard the world-famous Rocky Mountaineer train • Riding the Ice Explorer snow bus across the Athabasca Glacier • Witnessing polar bears in their natural habitat in Churchill • Enjoying a meal with a view, from the soaring CN Tower • Whale watching in British Columbia • Taking the Banff Gondola lift to the top of Sulphur Mountain

Did you know?

• Over half of the world’s population of polar bears can be found in Canada. • Canada’s police force give out ‘positive tickets’ to civilians when they see somebody doing something positive. • Some parts of Canada have less gravity than the rest of the world. Discovered in the 1960s, this bizarre phenomenon is a result of Ice Age glaciers pushing down on the Earth’s crust underneath Canada. The weight of the ice caused mantle rock to ooze sideways, leaving an unfilled gap for the crust to bounce back into. It is yet to fully bounce back.

When is the best time to visit Canada?

The best time to visit Canada depends on your interests, preferences, and what you want to see and do during your trip. Canada is a vast country with diverse landscapes and weather patterns, so the optimal time to visit can vary depending on the region you plan to explore.

Here is a general guide to the best time to visit Canada based on the season:

Summer (June-August): This is the peak tourist season in Canada, especially in popular destinations such as Banff, Vancouver, and Toronto. The weather is warm and sunny, and many outdoor activities such as hiking, camping, and water sports are available. However, this is also the busiest and most expensive time of year, so expect larger crowds and higher prices.

Autumn / Fall (September-November): Fall is a beautiful time to visit Canada, especially if you want to see the vibrant colors of the changing leaves. The crowds start to thin out, and the weather is still pleasant in many areas. Fall is also a great time for wildlife viewing, as many animals prepare for the winter months.

Winter (December-February): Canada is known for its long and cold winters, but this season can also be a great time to visit, especially if you enjoy winter sports such as skiing, snowboarding, and ice skating. Popular winter destinations include Whistler, Banff, and Quebec City. Winter is also a great time to see the northern lights in places like Yukon and the Northwest Territories.

Spring (March-May): Spring can be a beautiful time to visit Canada, especially as the snow starts to melt and the flowers begin to bloom. This is a great time for outdoor activities such as hiking and cycling, and it's also a good time to visit some of the country's top attractions before the summer crowds arrive.

Ultimately, the best time to visit Canada depends on your personal preferences and what you want to see and do during your trip. It's always a good idea to research the weather patterns and seasonal events in the specific region you plan to visit and plan accordingly.

Visitors can take a boat tour to get up close to the falls, or explore the surrounding area, which includes vineyards, wineries, and historical sites.

Old Quebec City: Located in the province of Quebec, Old Quebec City is a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the oldest cities in North America. Visitors can explore the cobblestone streets, historic buildings, and charming cafes and restaurants.

Will I need a Visa to visit Canada?

Whether or not you need a visa to visit Canada depends on your nationality and the purpose of your visit. Here are the general guidelines:

Visa-exempt countries: If you are a citizen of a country that is exempt from the requirement of obtaining a visitor visa, you can visit Canada for up to six months without a visa. These countries include the United States, most European countries, Australia, and Japan, among others. However, you still need to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) before you travel to Canada by air.

Countries requiring a visitor visa: If you are a citizen of a country that is not exempt from the requirement of obtaining a visitor visa, you need to apply for a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) before you can travel to Canada. The application process involves submitting your passport, a completed application form, and other supporting documents to the Canadian visa office in your country. You may also need to attend an interview or provide biometric information as part of the application process.

Other types of visas: If you are traveling to Canada for a specific purpose such as work, study, or to join a family member who is already in Canada, you may need to apply for a different type of visa. These include work permits, study permits, and family sponsorship visas, among others. The application process and requirements for these visas can vary, so it's important to consult the Canadian government website or contact the nearest Canadian embassy or consulate for more information.

It's important to note that the visa application process can take several weeks or even months, so it's best to apply well in advance of your intended travel date. You should also make sure that you meet all the requirements for entry into Canada, including having a valid passport and any necessary travel documents.

As always we recommend checking the latest country entry requirements with your national foreign travel office, for UK citizens this is the Foreign Travel Advice section of www.gov.co.uk, please click here to view to Canada page.

Holidays To The Rockies

The Canadian Rockies are a popular destination for travelers from around the world, and it's easy to see why. With its stunning natural beauty, diverse wildlife, and endless opportunities for outdoor adventure, the Canadian Rockies offer a truly unforgettable holiday experience.

When planning a trip to the Canadian Rockies, there are a few things to keep in mind. First, it's important to decide when to visit. The peak season is typically from June to September, when the weather is warm and many of the outdoor attractions are open. However, this is also the busiest time of year, so if you prefer a quieter experience, consider visiting in the shoulder season, which runs from April to May and September to October.

Next, you'll want to decide where to stay. There are several towns and cities throughout the Canadian Rockies, each with its own unique charm and attractions. Banff is one of the most popular destinations, with its charming downtown area, hot springs, and close proximity to some of the most iconic natural landmarks in the area, such as Lake Louise and Moraine Lake. Jasper, located to the north, is another popular destination, known for its rugged wilderness and opportunities for outdoor adventure.

Once you've decided where to stay, it's time to start planning your itinerary. One of the most popular activities in the Canadian Rockies is hiking, and there are trails for all skill levels, from easy strolls to challenging multi-day hikes. The scenery is simply breathtaking, with snow-capped mountains, crystal-clear lakes, and dense forests as far as the eye can see.

In addition to hiking, there are plenty of other outdoor activities to enjoy in the Canadian Rockies. You can go white-water rafting, horseback riding, mountain biking, and even take a helicopter tour to see the scenery from above. Wildlife viewing is also a popular activity, with the chance to spot grizzly bears, moose, elk, and more.

For those who prefer a more leisurely pace, there are plenty of sightseeing opportunities as well. Take a scenic drive along the Icefields Parkway, a 232 km stretch of highway that connects Banff and Jasper, and marvel at the stunning views of glaciers, waterfalls, and towering peaks. You can also visit the many museums and cultural attractions in the area, such as the Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies in Banff or the Jasper-Yellowhead Museum and Archives in Jasper.

In terms of accommodations, there are options for every budget and preference, from luxury hotels and resorts to cozy cabins and campgrounds. Many of the hotels and lodges offer stunning views of the surrounding mountains and lakes, and some even have their own hot springs.

In summary, a holiday to the Canadian Rockies is an experience like no other. From the awe-inspiring natural beauty to the endless opportunities for outdoor adventure, there is truly something for everyone. Whether you prefer a fast-paced itinerary filled with hiking and wildlife viewing or a more relaxed schedule of sightseeing and leisure activities, the Canadian Rockies are sure to leave a lasting impression.

What wildlife might I see in the Rockies?

The Canadian Rockies are home to a diverse array of wildlife, including:

Grizzly Bears: The Canadian Rockies are one of the few remaining places in the world where you can still see grizzly bears in their natural habitat. These magnificent animals are most commonly spotted in the spring and fall, as they emerge from hibernation or forage for food before winter.

Black Bears: Black bears are also common in the Canadian Rockies and can be seen throughout the year. They are generally less aggressive than grizzly bears but should still be treated with caution and respect.

Moose: Moose are the largest member of the deer family and are often seen near lakes and rivers in the Canadian Rockies. They are most active in the early morning and late afternoon.

Elk: Elk are another common sight in the Canadian Rockies, particularly in the fall when they mate and bugle to attract mates. They are often seen grazing in open fields or near roadsides.

Bighorn Sheep: Bighorn sheep are native to the Canadian Rockies and are known for their impressive horns and ability to navigate steep mountain terrain. They are often seen grazing on grasses and shrubs along the side of the road.

Mountain Goats: Mountain goats are adapted to living in rocky, mountainous terrain and are often seen in the higher elevations of the Canadian Rockies. They have distinctive white coats and are known for their impressive climbing abilities.

Wolves: Wolves are a rare sight in the Canadian Rockies, but if you're lucky, you may spot one. They are most active at dawn and dusk and are known for their distinctive howling.

It's important to remember that these are all wild animals and should be treated with respect and caution. If you encounter wildlife while in the Canadian Rockies, keep a safe distance and never approach or feed them.

Money & costs in Canada

The currency of Canada is the Canadian dollar (CAD). As of May 2023, the exchange rate is approximately 1 CAD to 0.81 USD.

The amount of money you will need for your trip to Canada depends on various factors such as the length of your stay, your itinerary, your accommodation choices, and your spending habits. However, here are some general estimates of the cost of things in Canada:

Coffee: A regular cup of coffee from a cafe or restaurant usually costs around $2.50 to $3.50 CAD.

Beer: A pint of beer in a bar or pub can range from $6 to $10 CAD, depending on the location and brand.

Meals: A basic meal at a fast food chain or food court usually costs around $10 to $15 CAD, while a mid-range restaurant meal can cost between $20 to $40 CAD per person.

Accommodation: The cost of accommodation in Canada varies widely depending on the location, type of accommodation, and the time of year. Hostels and budget hotels usually start at around $30 to $50 CAD per night, while mid-range hotels and vacation rentals can cost anywhere from $100 to $300 CAD per night.

It's a good idea to do some research on the cost of living in the specific region you plan to visit and budget accordingly. You should also factor in additional expenses such as transportation, activities, and souvenirs.

As for how much money you should bring, it's recommended to have a mix of cash and credit/debit cards. ATMs are widely available in Canada, and credit cards are accepted at most establishments. However, it's always a good idea to have some cash on hand for small purchases and emergencies.

Is Canada a safe country to visit?

Yes, Canada is generally considered a safe country to visit. It consistently ranks high in global safety indexes, such as the Global Peace Index and the Safe Cities Index. The country has a stable political and economic system, and the crime rate is relatively low.

However, like any destination, Canada has its own unique risks and potential hazards, and travelers should exercise caution and common sense to stay safe. Here are some general safety tips for visitors to Canada:

Be aware of your surroundings: Pay attention to your surroundings and avoid walking alone in dark or isolated areas, particularly at night.

Keep your valuables safe: Keep your money, passport, and other important documents in a secure place, such as a hotel safe. Be mindful of pickpockets and keep a close eye on your belongings in public places.

Follow traffic laws: If you plan to drive in Canada, be sure to follow traffic laws and wear your seatbelt. Driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol is a serious offense in Canada.

Be prepared for the weather: Canada has a wide range of weather conditions, depending on the season and location. Be sure to check the weather forecast and pack appropriate clothing and gear for your trip.

Respect local culture and customs: Canada is a diverse country with many different cultures and customs. Be respectful of local traditions and beliefs, and avoid any behavior that may be considered offensive or disrespectful.

By following these guidelines and using common sense, you can enjoy a safe and enjoyable trip to Canada.

Do I need any vaccinations to travel to Canada?

As of May 2023, there are no mandatory vaccinations required for visitors to enter Canada. However, it's recommended that travelers are up-to-date on routine vaccinations such as measles, mumps, rubella, tetanus, and influenza.

Additionally, travelers should consult with their healthcare provider to determine if any additional vaccinations are recommended based on their individual health status and travel itinerary. For example, the Public Health Agency of Canada recommends that travelers receive the hepatitis A and B vaccines if they plan to spend extended periods of time in rural areas, work in healthcare or emergency services, or have sexual contact with new partners while in Canada.

What is the food like in Canada?

Canadian cuisine is a reflection of the country's multicultural heritage and vast natural resources. It embraces diverse flavors, regional specialties, and a fusion of culinary traditions. Here's an overview of the food you can expect to find in Canada:

Poutine: This iconic Canadian dish originated in Quebec and has gained popularity across the country. It consists of crispy french fries topped with cheese curds and smothered in rich gravy. Poutine variations often include additional toppings like bacon, pulled pork, or mushrooms.

Maple Syrup: Canada is renowned for its production of high-quality maple syrup. This sweet and flavorful syrup is derived from maple trees and is used to enhance various dishes, such as drizzling it over pancakes, waffles, or desserts.

Seafood: With its vast coastlines, Canada offers an abundance of fresh seafood. Atlantic lobster, salmon, scallops, oysters, and crab are popular choices. You can enjoy them grilled, poached, or in dishes like seafood chowder or fish and chips.

Nanaimo Bars: This classic Canadian dessert originated in Nanaimo, British Columbia. It consists of three layers: a crumbly chocolate and graham cracker base, a creamy custard middle layer, and a smooth chocolate ganache on top. It's a sweet treat loved by locals and visitors alike.

Indigenous Cuisine: Canadian indigenous cuisine offers a unique culinary experience. Traditional ingredients like wild game (such as bison and caribou), foraged ingredients like berries and wild herbs, and preparation methods like smoking and curing are key elements of indigenous cuisine.

Butter Tarts: Butter tarts are a beloved Canadian pastry. They feature a flaky pastry crust filled with a sweet mixture of butter, sugar, and sometimes raisins or pecans. The gooey, caramel-like filling makes them a delectable dessert or snack.

Montreal Bagels: Montreal-style bagels are distinct from their New York counterparts. They are smaller, denser, and sweeter, typically baked in a wood-fired oven. They're often topped with sesame or poppy seeds and are a must-try specialty in Montreal.

Bison: As a lean and flavorful meat, bison is gaining popularity in Canada. It is often featured in hearty dishes like burgers, steaks, and stews, providing a taste of the country's rich culinary heritage.

Craft Beer: Canada has a thriving craft beer scene, with microbreweries and brewpubs scattered throughout the country. You can sample a wide range of beer styles, including lagers, ales, stouts, and IPAs, each with its own unique flavors and characteristics.

These are just a few highlights of Canadian cuisine, which varies from region to region. Each province and territory has its own local specialties and culinary traditions, making Canada a delightful destination for food enthusiasts seeking diverse and delicious flavors.

Can I drink the tap water in Canada?

Yes, tap water in Canada is generally safe to drink. The country has stringent regulations and robust water treatment systems to ensure the quality and safety of its tap water. Municipalities are responsible for monitoring and treating the water supply to meet national health standards.

In most cities and towns across Canada, tap water undergoes extensive filtration, disinfection, and testing processes to ensure it meets or exceeds the guidelines set by Health Canada. The water is regularly tested for bacteria, viruses, and chemicals to maintain its quality.

However, it's important to note that there can be slight variations in water quality between different regions or municipalities. In some remote or rural areas, water sources may be from wells or local reservoirs, and additional precautions may be necessary. It's advisable to check with the local authorities or your accommodation provider to get the most up-to-date information about the tap water quality in the specific area you plan to visit.

If you have any concerns or prefer the taste of filtered or bottled water, those options are readily available for purchase in supermarkets, convenience stores, and other retail outlets throughout the country.

In summary, while tap water in Canada is generally safe to drink, it's always a good idea to stay informed about the specific water quality in the area you're visiting and take necessary precautions if needed.

‘There’s no way that’s not Photoshopped’...

This is what your friends will say when you show them your Canadian Rockies travel pics. This mighty mountain range is a (huge) segment of the Rocky Mountains which spans 4800 kilometres from British Columbia to New Mexico . It’s home to four national parks – Banff, Jasper, Kootenay and Yoho – and some of North America ’s most breathtaking scenery. Think impossibly blue lakes, sprawling glaciers and ice fields, and ink-blank skies occasionally graced with the Northern Lights . If you like the sound of trekking in the shadows of snow-dusted peaks, standing in the mist of some of Canada ’s tallest waterfalls or canoeing to a secluded beach to camp under the stars, then a Canadian Rockies trip has your name all over it.

Canadian Rockies travel FAQs

Do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travellers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travellers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

How to get to the Canadian Rockies

There are a few ways you can get to the Canadian Rockies depending on where you're travelling from.

The easiest (and quickest) way is to fly to Calgary, about an hour and a half from Banff National Park. (Most of our Rockies trips begin in Calgary or Vancouver, anyway). You can then hire a car at the airport or jump on a shuttle bus to Banff.

You could also fly to Edmonton, which is about a four hour drive away from Banff and Jasper.

How do I get around the Canadian Rockies?

Covering almost 200,000 square kilometres across Alberta and British Columbia, the best way to get around the Canadian Rockies is to join a tour or drive.

If you've flown into Calgary (the closest airport to Banff National Park), you can hire a vehicle from several car rental companies and continue your journey to the Rockies.

Without a car, you may struggle to travel around the region's national parks.

When is the best time to visit the Canadian Rockies?

The best time to visit the Canadian Rockies depends on the activities you want to do. Summer is for kayaking, swimming, hiking and camping, while winter calls for ice skating, dog sledding and skiing down Canada's best slopes. Winter also offers a chance to see the Northern Lights.

The summer (June through August) is the peak season in the Rockies thanks to the milder weather, which also means higher accommodation prices and more people on the trails. Try going in the 'shoulder' months of April, May, September or October for a balance of good weather and smaller crowds.

What do I pack for a trip to the Canadian Rockies?

Packing for a trip to the Canadian Rockies is similar to packing for a trip anywhere. What you pack largely depends on the time of year you're travelling.

If you're going in winter, pack appropriate weather clothing such as gloves, beanies, waterproof jackets, long pants etc.

If you're travelling in summer, pack sunscreen, a sunhat, t-shirts, dresses, and shorts.

You should also pack the essentials: a camera, a reusable drink bottle, and a backpack/day bag.

Are Intrepid trips accessible for travellers with disabilities?

We are committed to making travel widely  accessible , regardless of ability or disability. We do our best to help you see the world, regardless of physical or mental limitations.

We are always happy to talk to travellers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them toward the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

In the vast nation of Canada, the weather and climate vary from area to region. The fall months of August and September are typically the greatest times to travel since the weather is still pleasant for outdoor activities despite having dropped off a bit. In addition, costs have decreased, the summer throngs have dispersed, and the foliage is beginning to change colours. Winter typically lasts from October through March, however it can occasionally extend into April. Vancouver gets very little snow throughout the winter, but Montreal is often frigid.

The ideal months to visit Banff National Park are from June to August for outdoor activities during the summer, and from December to March for the greatest skiing.

The official languages of Canada are English and French, with English being spoken by more than 80% of the population.

Things to do:

1. Celebrate the Calgary Stampede

For this multi-day rodeo, drinking festival, and carnival where everyone gets to be a cowboy, almost 1 million people go to Calgary in July. You'll meet a tonne of individuals from all over the world, and it's a tonne of fun. Book early since it's one of Canada's best events because rates are going up and space is going quickly! If you want to blend in, don a hat and cowboy boots as well.

2. Hit the slopes

In the winter, skiing and snowboarding are excellent in the Canadian highlands. Popular alpine town Banff is well-known for its top-notch hiking paths. It gets extremely crowded in the winter as both residents and tourists hit the slopes, but people go there for a purpose. There are many more fantastic skiing locations in the nation, even if Banff is the most well-known. There are plenty to choose from, including Sunshine Village, Whistler Blackcomb, Lake Louise, Kicking Horse, and Mont Tremblant, which are all located between British Columbia and Quebec.

3. Discover Vancouver Island

Spend a couple days travelling around the adjacent Vancouver Island after Vancouver. Consume delectable seafood, go hiking, see some whales (many orcas live nearby), shop, and relax on the beach. You can just sit here and unwind. Due of its proximity to Vancouver, inhabitants frequently use it as a summer retreat. The island is where British Columbia's capital, Victoria, is situated. It's a little, charming city worth spending a few days discovering. You may also go from here to locations like Tofino, where the thriving surf scene has transformed into a lively hippy town.

4. Hike the rainforest

For a magnificent view of some temperate rain forests on Vancouver Island, hike in the Pacific Rim National Park. It's one of the most visited parks in Canada, and it's full with species including deer, wolves, bears, and cougars as well as Pacific Silver Firs and Western Red Cedars. The Long Beach region is one of the easiest areas to go trekking, although the South Beach Trail's sand dunes beyond Wickanninish Beach are equally worthwhile.

5. Explore Calgary

Since it's not on the shore, Calgary is sometimes overlooked by tourists, but it actually has a lot to offer in terms of free and inexpensive activities. Visit one of the city's numerous parks for a picnic, try rollerblading, see a hockey game, or climb to the top of one of the nearby peaks. You may simply hire a bike and ride about the city on one of its numerous bike routes. This area also offers excellent hiking, kayaking, skiing, water rafting, and camping opportunities. Although long derided as an oil town, it is actually one of Canada's liveliest communities.

6. Visit the galleries of Toronto

Spend a day or two admiring the artwork of the city of Toronto, which contains some of the top museums and galleries in the nation. The two most well-known art museums are the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) and the Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO), but there are also a tonne of smaller, specialised museums like the Textiles Museum of Canada and the Museum of Contemporary Art. Check before you go to a gallery to save money because they frequently give discounts on specific days of the week.

7. Take a road trip

The easiest way to see this vast nation is in a vehicle or an RV. It's the best way to discover quaint small villages, magnificent mountains, gorgeous countryside, and a tonne of off-the-beaten-path locations. This is the most practical and affordable way to tour the nation if you have a lot of time. Since the Trans-Canada Highway runs coast to coast, organising a car vacation is not too difficult. Just remember that the weather might change at any time (especially in the winter). Naturally, you'll need to be vigilant for animals and be ready for extended stretches of driving without any rest breaks or petrol stations. The breathtaking views and shifting topography make it worthwhile, though. You might readily spend weeks or months touring the country and still barely scratch the surface.

8. Stroll the nation’s capital

The city of Ottawa is extremely simple to navigate on foot. It's a wonderful city worth seeing for a few days because it's home to museums, art galleries, and a tonne of stores. You may visit Quebec (where there is a fantastic Museum of Civilization) or cross the Ottawa River to Parliament Hill, where the Canadian government is housed in beautiful old buildings. The National Gallery of Canada and the Canadian War Museum are two must-see museums in Ottawa. Don't forget to visit the bustling Byward Market and the Westboro craft brewers as well. When you visit, try a beavertail, a delicious pastry with sugary toppings.

9. Get off the beaten path in Nova Scotia

The inhabitants of Nova Scotia are said to be the nicest in all of Canada. They might be correct. This makes Nova Scotia an incredible spot to visit in Canada, along with its more than 100 beaches, charming lighthouses, wonderful sailing, delectable seafood (this region of Canada is the primary fishing region), and stunning coastline. Additionally, compared to other locations, the province is far less congested and pristine because it doesn't receive many tourists. Both road excursions and camping vacations are ideal for it.

10. Tour Toronto

Given that more than half of its residents were born outside of Canada, Toronto is sometimes referred to be the world's most multicultural metropolis. Even if this isn't my favourite place in Canada, it's still worth going if you're nearby to check out the various museums and eat your fill (this is one of the finest cities in the world for vegans and vegetarians). It's a great, trendy, artistic city. For delicious food and hip stores, don't miss Kensington Market. The CN Tower offers the greatest views of the city if you want to act like a tourist.

11. See Kelowna

This glacier valley boasts some of the nicest weather in the nation, with warm summers and moderate winters. It's hardly surprising that many Canadians choose to spend their holidays here. In addition to having a marina and a few golf courses, the Okanagan Valley is where Canada's top wines and vineyards are located (a four-hour wine tour costs about 150 CAD). On the adjacent Okanagan Lake in the summer, Canadians hire opulent houseboats with waterslides for vacations. All in all, this is a very stunning area of the nation that shouldn't be missed.

12. Head north to Churchill, Manitoba

The Polar Bear Capital of the World, Beluga Whale Capital of the World, and one of the greatest locations to see the Aurora Borealis are all located in this tiny village in the middle of nowhere. To observe polar bears in their native habitats, you can take a tundra buggy (a special bus lifted on enormous wheels to keep you out of reach of polar bears). Here, mother nature is vibrant and living. Tundra buggy day trips begin at around 250 CAD, which includes lunch.

13. See the iconic Niagara Falls

One of the most popular tourist destinations on the entire continent is this. Until you really see it up close, you can never truly appreciate its size (you never envision so much mist either). Take a boat excursion and venture out into the waterfalls to view it up close (be prepared to get soaked). The daily boat excursion offered by Walks has access to the prime locations and goes beneath the falls (tours are 98 CAD). Spend no more than a day or two there because the town itself is a touristic, cheesy dump (kids will have fun though).

14. Get lost in the Yukon

The Yukon is the ideal location to satisfy your need for nature. The likelihood of spotting a bear, elk, or deer is very high (alternatively, you might visit the Yukon Wildlife Preserve, where you're certain to see them). Visit the Takhini Hot Springs, go trekking at Tombstone Territorial Park, or the Sign Post Forest, which has a rare collection of over 77,000 signposts. Few people ever travel to the Yukon because most tourists stay in the country's southern big cities. As a result, you will be surrounded by unaltered nature.

I found the best ones were smaller I dont understand Hotels not having wash cloths anymore... I dont like that

Best of UK & Ireland Tour

Best of UK & Ireland

Excellent trip. No issues with driver or guide. Couldn’t have asked for better. But it was a very long and hectic schedule. Because of that we probably won’t be going on any long bus trips again.

Grand Tour of Britain & Ireland Tour

Grand Tour of Britain & Ireland

A little disappointed in the Glasgow hotel and the Holiday Inn in York, both were not up to standard with cleanliness issues and a bed which sagged into the middle at York. I also think the tour started an hour too early and finished an hour too early each day.

The Best of Britain & Ireland Tour

The Best of Britain & Ireland

I realized that booking through TourRadar for a Cosmos tour was probably a bad decision. There were a number of things Tour Radar left off or did not offer to those who booked straight through Cosmos. My questions is this...why did we not get the same advantages that other Cosmos direct tour members did? Why did I pay a premium when I did not get the concierge-level service? In theory, I should have gotten a level above-and-beyond those who just booked with Cosmos but I did not even get the basics. I am thoroughly disappointed with the Tour Radar aspect of the tour arrangements and that was so fairly obvious to others who booked through Cosmos. No luggage tags, no travel book, no extra information. You had the tour guide wrong, the rooms were not as requested. The Cosmos tour guide was your saving grace. She was fantastic but she works for Cosmos. If I had to do it all again, I would book direct through Cosmos. Also, the Tour Bus was substandard compared to other Cosmos tour buses we saw on our trip. No tray tables, no usb chargers, and the wifi was non-existent. That is more Cosmos than you but I am still disappointed. Driver was great...bus was too full and lacked basic functionality.

5 Day Skye & Highland Fling Tour

5 Day Skye & Highland Fling

My trip with my wife was so amazing. Our tour guide Branka was so fascinating, funny, informative, and interesting. Each day was a true adventure, following both an itinerary and improvising based on weather, location and time of day. We met really cool people on the tour and had fun with them when we had some free time to roam around. Cool part was you can hang with them or just do your own thing with no problem. This trip was one my wife and I have never done before. Yet I would certainly recommend it for those who want to experience a unique and fun trip filled with awesome adventures throughout Scotland!

Best of Ireland & Scotland (Classic, 14 Days) Tour

My wife and I had a great time. Greg was incredible, so knowledgeable. We loved his stories, choice of music, he made the trip.

Highland Fling Tour

Highland Fling

Tour was great overall! Alistair and Karis were great guides. One critique we would make: at certain points of the tour, Alistair mentioned: "outdoor style tours" (hiking trails, camping, etc). While we have no issue with these types of tours, the majority of our tour consisted of people over the age of 60 (possibly not the "ideal market" for those kinds of tours). When we booked the tour, we were unaware there was an option to book a hotel instead of staying in a hostel; my dad and I were both uncomfortable staying in a hostel room with women. After 2 nights in a hostel during the tour, we booked a room at a separate hotel.

Great Britain Tour

Great Britain

Our guide Peter W was wonderful and driver Minty exceptional. The sights were just what I was hoping for and the drives and optional trips very good.

What people love about UK And Great Britain Tours

Trip was very good and gave an overall view of the countries. Tour guide was excellent! She gave us background of cities we visited and history of the area. Only criticism I have is that the bus seats were narrow and cramped for leg room. Since we spent so much time riding, improvement in this area would make the trip more enjoyable.
Very nice itinerary ... jam packed days and evenings. I chose not to do any of the extra evening excursions that were offered so I was able to use the time to explore every overnight stop on my own. The tour guide was amazing... so full of knowledge about all the countries/areas we visited.
