A boat carrying hospitality workers capsized Monday during a tour of a historic underground cavern system built to carry water from the Erie Canal beneath the western New York city of Lockport, killing one person who became trapped beneath the overturned vessel, officials said.

All 29 people on board the flat-bottomed boat operated by Lockport Cave Tours were thrown into water between 5 feet and 6 feet deep when the craft tipped over toward the end of the roughly 300-foot route.

The tours take visitors on an underground boat ride through a dimly lit, rough-hewn tunnel, which was blasted out in the 19th century to transport canal water as an industrial power source.

Some passengers dunked into the water were able to get to safety on their own. Rescue crews using an inflatable boat rescued about 16 others, Lockport Fire Chief Luca Quagliano said.

Jeremy Swiatowy, 42, watched as rescue workers breached the wall to the tunnel with a sledgehammer before shimmying through the hole to reach people inside.

“The water in the caves is super cold,” he said.

When rescuers reached the boat, some passengers had climbed on top of its upturned hull, Quagliano said at a news conference.

Authorities did not immediately release the name of the man who died. His wife was taken to a hospital.

A total of 11 people were brought to hospitals, mostly with minor injuries, the fire chief said.

All of the passengers were hospitality employees from across Niagara County, according to Andrea Czopp, chief operating officer at Destination Niagara USA. The agency organized the outing as part of a familiarization tour, she said.

Authorities said the specially built motorboat holds up to 40 people, who sit in rows about four across. During the ride, about two to three feet of space separate the boat and cave walls on either side.

Nobody on board had a life preserver, authorities said. It was unclear whether they were required or offered.

The company that operates the tours did not immediately respond to phone calls and an email seeking comment.

Lockport Mayor Michelle Roman said the attraction, located about 20 miles (32 kilometers) northeast of Niagara Falls, has operated since the mid-1970s, without incident. It will remain closed during an investigation.

“This is very sad for everybody,” she said.

Police Chief Steven Abbott said the cave and canal are private property.

“We have a lot of questions that need to be answered,” he said.

Video footage from the scene outside the Lockport Cave office showed one person talking as she was loaded onto an ambulance. Others wrapped in white towels were being escorted to a bus as a steady rain fell.

The water tunnel was once the subject of an episode of the Syfy network show “Ghost Hunters.”

A tour boat capsized in a cave along the Erie Canal in western New York state Monday, sending several passengers into the water and killing a man, authorities said.

Lockport police officers and firefighters rushed to Lockport Cave & Underground Boat Ride and pulled people out of the water after the first calls for help came in about 11:30 a.m., officials said.

A passenger was trapped under the vessel after it went bottom-up and was declared dead once he was pulled from the water, the Lockport Fire Department said in a statement. The man was not immediately publicly identified pending notification of his wife, officials said.

“The boat did a 180-degree turn, so the bottom of the boat was upright in the water,” Fire Chief Luca Quagliano told reporters. “A number of victims were on top of that boat initially when rescuers got to them.”

First responders pulled 16 people from the water, 11 of whom were taken to hospitals for minor injuries and hypothermia, the fire department said, echoing a preliminary narrative offered earlier by Lockport Police Chief Steven Abbott.

Twelve other passengers were tall enough to walk through the water while breathing and reach safety, the fire department said. Rescuers used an inflatable boat and breached a cave wall to reach riders from different directions, it said.

A city police officer who entered the water to help passengers was later taken to a hospital to be evaluated for possible hypothermia, the fire department said.

A firefighter sustained a minor, unspecified injury but remained on duty, it said.

The people in the boat were hospitality and travel professionals in the area on a “familiarization tour,” guests of Destination Niagara USA, which promotes local tourism, officials said.

“Wet and shaken up is definitely an understatement,” Quagliano said.

The boat was near the end of its 350-foot journey when it capsized.

"There's no treacherous spots to traverse or anything like that. It's well-lit throughout the cave system," Quagliano said. "This place has been in operation for decades without incident. The staff there is very well trained."

Investigators from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, the National Transportation Safety Board, the sheriff's office and local police were at the scene.

“So at this time, we are considering it a crime scene until further notice,” Abbott said.

The famed Lockport Cave was the subject of a 2016 episode of the Syfy network show "Ghost Hunters.”

The owner has been cooperating with investigators in the early stages of the probe, authorities said. Operators of the site did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

In the 1800s, the site, which includes early Erie Canal locks, was used for a pioneering system that fed and pressurized the city's fire hydrants. The cave and boat tour, which commenced in 1977, is promoted as a must-see attraction for visitors to nearby Niagara Falls.

The boat that capsized was built specifically for travel in that cave, officials said.

"So it's not something that was built ... and brought in at a later date," Abbott said. "They actually built it within the structure of that cave."

The cause of the capsizing was under investigation, the fire department said.

A tour boat capsized Monday morning in a cave along the Erie Canal in Upstate New York, authorities said. One person died after being trapped beneath the boat for at least an hour.

Fire officials and emergency medical personnel rescued 16 people from the water. Authorities said there were 28 people on board the boat when it capsized before 11:30 a.m. The rest of the passengers were able to emerge safely out of the cave.

The tour was carrying passengers and one staff member from Destination Niagara through a series of caves in a section of the Erie Canal in Lockport, near Niagara Falls at the U.S.-Canadian border. 

The capsize happened during a stretch of the underground trip where tourists board a small boat and travel along a 300-foot channel inside the cave, where the water level hovers around five feet deep, although it exceeds six feet in some areas, authorities said at a news conference Monday afternoon. 

Authorities said the boat, which can carry as many as 40 people, became unstable and flipped near the end of the channel. The passenger who was killed was about 60 years old, authorities said.

Of the 16 people rescued by crews, 11 were injured and transported to a hospital for treatment. Officials said a broken arm and a possible head injury were recorded, although some passengers could have potentially suffered from hypothermia after being in the water for 15 or 20 minutes. The water temperature at the time was between 55 degrees and 60 degrees Fahrenheit.

The Lockport Police Department originally confirmed the incident in a  statement  shared to its Facebook page about an hour after it happened.

"Lockport police and fire departments, as well as several other agencies, are currently working to assist parties that were on a boat that capsized in the Lockport Cave Tours," police said in the statement.

Streets in the surrounding area were closed off to give rescue crews easier access to the scene, according to Lockport police. An investigation into the incident is ongoing, and authorities said the area where the boat capsized will be considered a crime scene until their probe is complete.

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said in a tweet that authorities with the New York State Police, Division of Homeland Security, State Parks and Health Department were at the scene and assisting local officials in their response.

"My team is in close contact with local officials and emergency operations teams who have responded to a capsized boat along the Erie Canal in Lockport," the tweet read.

As WIVB reported, boat tours have taken place inside the Erie Canal's network of caves since 1977, while the caves themselves were created in the late 19th century. Authorities said Monday that the Lockport Cave Tours have proceeded without incident since they began more than four decades ago.

Tour Boat in Fatal Capsizing Was Unregulated and Had Tipped Before

Gov. Kathy Hochul said her administration would look into how such waterborne tourist attractions in New York could be made safer.

After a tour boat capsized in a tunnellike cavern in western New York this week , killing a man and injuring nearly a dozen others, officials said they were investigating when the boat had last been inspected.

The answer, it turns out, is most likely never.

The 300-foot canal in the dimly lit cavern, the Lockport Cave in Lockport, N.Y., is privately owned and is not a navigable body of water. As such, the narrow, flat-bottomed boat that was carrying 28 people on Monday operated in a regulatory limbo, officials said.

As a result of the episode, Gov. Kathy Hochul directed her administration to “look at all possible ways to prevent future tragedies,” a spokesman said on Tuesday. The U.S. Coast Guard polices federally navigable waterways. But the governor’s spokesman, Matt Janiszewski, said that no state agency has jurisdiction over vessels in nonpublic, nonnavigable waterways.

The revelation that no official entity was monitoring the safety of the attraction, which is about a half-hour east of Niagara Falls, emerged as The Buffalo News reported that the episode on Monday was not the first of its kind, despite what Lockport officials have said.

In September 2015, The News reported, about 30 people from a social services charity — at least half of them teenage clients — were thrown overboard in similar fashion. All of those dumped into the canal then escaped without serious injury, according to a woman whose son was there.

The woman, Sheri Scavone, said in an interview that the capsizing had traumatized her son, who was then 15 and a good swimmer. He helped another teenager to safety.

“It was dark, the water was freezing, there was nothing to grab onto,” Ms. Scavone said, adding that, as was true this week, no one was wearing life jackets. “Twenty kids could have died that day.”

She said she decided to call attention to the earlier episode after Lockport officials said on Monday that the cave attraction, a man-made remnant of New York’s industrial past that is next to the Erie Canal, had run without incident since opening to tourists in the 1970s.

“That, I could not let pass,” Ms. Scavone said.

Daniel and Elizabeth Morrisette, who were among the boat’s passengers Monday, described in an interview with ABC’s “Good Morning America” a similarly terrifying scene as 16 people were rescued from 60-degree water that was as deep as six feet.

“The boat was on top of me and I couldn’t find any air pockets or anything,” Mr. Morrisette said. “And I’m just trying to, like, breathe because I’m under water.”

The Morrisettes and the others were on an outing sponsored by a regional tourism group for people involved in the hospitality industry in Niagara County, officials said.

Late Tuesday, the Lockport police identified the man who was killed as Harshad Shah, 65, whose wife had accompanied him and was injured. Mr. Shah was the longtime president of the Budget Host Inn in Niagara Falls, according to an obituary posted online by a funeral home.

Reached by telephone, a relative of Mr. Shah’s declined to comment, saying the family was still grieving. In a statement to WGRZ, a Buffalo television station, Mr. Shah’s relatives described him as a “family man” and said that his wife “remains in shock, unable to come to terms with this fatal event that unfolded before her eyes.”

On Monday, Lockport’s police chief, Steven Abbott, said that the cave was being treated as a crime scene because of Mr. Shah’s death. The federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration was also investigating what caused the boat to tip.

Lockport’s chief building inspector, Jason Dool, ordered the attraction closed after being called in by the police and finding electrical hazards. Among the problems were wires in the water, he said in an interview.

Mr. Dool said he had discussed the problems, which he did not believe had contributed to the capsizing, with an owner of the cave, Thomas Callahan, who had said he planned to address them.

Responding to a request for comment, Mr. Callahan said via text message that the Lockport Cave company was “deeply saddened by this tragedy.”

“Our condolences go out to the family,” he said. The company was cooperating with investigators, he added.

Lockport Cave is not the only tourist attraction in New York featuring an underground boat ride. Howe Caverns, which attracts 200,000 visitors a year to a site about 45 minutes west of Albany, offers something similar. An email to its general manager on Wednesday seeking information about safety measures was not immediately returned.

The man who died may have been stuck under the capsized boat.

One person has died after a tour boat capsized Monday morning at the Lockport Cave, a historical, underground boat ride by the Erie Canal in upstate New York , the local fire chief said.

Twenty-nine adults -- 28 of whom were Niagara County hospitality employees -- were on the small boat, which can handle 40 passengers, Lockport Fire Department Chief Luca Quagliano said at a news conference. At one point the boat became unbalanced and capsized, throwing everyone into the water, he said.

The man who died may have been stuck under the capsized boat, Quagliano said.

About 16 people were rescued by fire and EMS personnel, Quagliano said. Everyone else was able to get themselves to safety, he said, noting that the water is about 6 feet deep.

Eleven people were taken to hospitals for minor injuries, Quagliano said.

No one on board was wearing a life jacket, Quagliano said.

It's not clear why the boat capsized, the fire chief said.

The victim, who was not identified, was believed to be about 60 years old, Quagliano said, noting that his wife was among the people taken to a hospital.

Lockport is about 30 miles northeast of Buffalo.

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul tweeted that her "team is in close contact with local officials and emergency operations teams."

Victim identified in fatal capsizing of cave tour boat in Lockport

Lockport police have identified the man who died Monday when a tour boat capsized during a cave tour of the Erie Canal in Lockport, Niagara County.

Harshad Shah, 65, of Niagara Falls died following the late morning incident, in which a flat-bottom boat overturned and all 29 people on board were thrown into the water, Lockport police said.

Shah, who had been trapped underneath the overturned boat, was pronounced dead at the scene. Eleven other people were taken to area hospitals for treatment.

Who is Harshad Shah?

According to his obituary , Shah was born in Baroda, Gujarat, India and lived in Niagara Falls. He was the longtime president of the Budget Host Inn in Niagara Falls. He was survived by his wife, children, grandchildren and numerous other relatives.

WGRZ , the NBC affiliate in Buffalo shared a statement from Shah's family : "Harshad Shah was a family man who will be deeply missed. His wife remains in shock, unable to come to terms with this fatal event that unfolded before her eyes. We are all seeking answers to the why and how of this tragedy. The loss of Harshad Shah has forever changed our family, leaving an irreplaceable void."

Shah's funeral will be held Thursday in Niagara Falls, according to M.J. Colucci & Son Funeral Chapel.

What happened in the Lockport cave?

The boat apparently became unbalanced near the end of a 300-foot-long tunnel and capsized, throwing all on board into the water, which is between 5 feet and 6 feet deep.

Some passengers were able to get to safety on their own. Emergency responders using an inflatable boat rescued about 16 others.

At the time of the incident, the boat was operating a morning tour of an underground tunnel built to carry water from the Erie Canal underneath the City of Lockport to area businesses. The water temperature in the cave is between 55 and 60 degrees.

Local, state and federal agencies are investigating what caused the craft to overturn.

The tours take visitors on an underground boat ride through a dimly lit, rough-hewn tunnel, which was blasted out in the 19th century to transport canal water as an industrial power source. Lockport Mayor Michelle Roman on Monday said that the attraction has operated since the mid-70s and will remain closed during an investigation.

It happened before

A similar capsizing incident occurred in September 2015, when staff and clients of Baker Victory Services were thrown into the water when their boat also flipped while on the Lockport Cave Tour, said John Pitts, spokesman for the agency, which has since been renamed OLV Human Services. He did not know whether the incident was formally reported at the time.

Sheri Scavone said that her son, then 15, was on the boat that capsized in 2015 and is still traumatized by the experience he remembers vividly.

“Thankfully, this kid knew how to swim and was strong,” Scavone said Tuesday, “but there was nothing to grab onto, the sides were slippery. It was pitch black. The boat was capsized.”

At the time, Scavone was only concerned with her son’s well-being, she said. Now she wishes she hadn’t let it go and is troubled that the tours have continued to operate without at least handing out life jackets.

Samantha North  told The Buffalo News  that she also was on the 2015 tour as an employee of Baker Victory.

The boat became unbalanced and flipped midway through the tour, she said, after passengers were instructed to stand up and turn around for the return trip.

“It seemed like it took forever” to get out of the chilly water, she said, where passengers, purses, cellphones, keys and other belongings ended up.

One person was killed and multiple people were sent to local hospitals after a boat capsized Monday during a tour of an underground cavern system built to carry water from the Erie Canal beneath the western New York city of Lockport, officials said.

Police and fire crews were called to the Lockport Cave Tours, about 32 kilometres northeast of Niagara Falls, at about 11:30 a.m. The tours take visitors on an underground boat ride illuminated only by small lights.

"The boat did a 180-degree turn, so the bottom of the boat was upright in the water," Lockport Fire Chief Luca Quagliano said at a news conference. "A number of victims were on top of that boat initially when rescuers got to them."

He said all 29 people on board the flat-bottom boat were thrown into water between 5 feet and 6 feet deep when the boat apparently became unbalanced and capsized toward the end of the roughly 300-foot tunnel.

Some passengers were able to get to safety on their own. Rescue crews using an inflatable boat rescued about 16 others, he said.

Authorities did not immediately release the name of the man who died. His wife was taken to a hospital, officials said.

"We have had eight of the passengers come into our ER," said Patricia Brandt, spokeswoman for Eastern Niagara Hospital in Lockport. "None critical. They're all stable and some have already been released."

Brandt said she did not know the nature of the injuries but believed some were treated for cold from being in the water. Other patients went to other hospitals, she said, but did not have details.

Jeremy Swiatowy, 42, watched as rescue workers breached the wall to the cave with a sledgehammer before shimmying through the hole to help rescue the remaining people inside. Swiatowy said local schoolchildren often take tours at the Lockport, and locals were concerned that children might have been on the boat that sent people into the chilling water.

"The water in the caves is super cold," he said.

Video footage from the scene outside the Lockport Cave office showed one person talking as she was loaded onto an ambulance. Others wrapped in white towels were being escorted to a bus as a steady rain fell.

Photos and videos posted on the Lockport Cave website show small, flat-bottom boats slipping through a rough-hewn tunnel, which was blasted out in the 19th century to transport extra water from the Erie Canal to power nearby businesses.

The tunnel was once the subject of an episode of the Syfy network show "Ghost Hunters."

Terrifying Video Shows Tourists Scream for Help as Boat Sinks

A video on social media captured the moment an excursion boat capsized in the Bahamas , leaving one American tourist dead.

The 74-year-old woman from Broomfield, Colorado, was on a five-day vacation with her family when a double-deck catamaran carrying over 100 people sank late Tuesday morning, the Associated Press reported. The rest of the passengers and crew members were rescued, including two people who were taken to a medical facility. Their current conditions are unknown.

A video captured by someone on a boat next to the capsized excursion ship filmed tourists wearing life vests screaming as people on the neighboring boat flung them life preservers. Someone in the video can be heard saying, "OK, OK, breathe" as someone standing on the side of the catamaran was filmed grabbing onto a rope as the boat was tipping over onto its other side.

The boat was traveling from Paradise Island to Blue Lagoon Island, which is a popular tourist destination northeast of the capital of Nassau.

It is not immediately clear how the tourist died. Authorities said that she was found unresponsive as they rescued others from the water. She was given CPR and then taken to a dock where she was pronounced dead, according to police.

Newsweek reached out to the Royal Bahamas Defense Force for additional information.

Kelly Schissel, who said she was one of the passengers on the catamaran recalled the incident in a video uploaded to TikTok . She explained how she didn't understand what was going on at first, since she was on the top level of the boat, but as she looked over the edge, she saw water coming into the catamaran.

"And then one of the crew members that was downstairs ran upstairs was crying, freaking out, absolutely balling, grabbing a life jacket and then that's when everybody's like oh s***, this is real, something's happening," Schissel said in the video.

Schissel added: "You wanna know why people didn't jump in right away? We were kinda waiting for the staff to tell us what to do, which they never did because they were too busy crying or freaking out or as you've seen one guy was on his phone."

The passenger said that they eventually started to jump into the water.

"So we all jump in and it was actually pretty rough waves. So a lot of people, they were just trying to stay above water even with their life vests," Schissel said.

A Toronto couple are speaking out about their “extremely dangerous” experience on board a sinking tour boat in the Dominican Republic last week.

Brock MacKenzie and his partner, Kerri Wolanski, were enjoying a tour of the Haitises National Park caves on Monday, April 15 when they first noticed water seeping onto their boat.

MacKenzie said that he initially didn’t understand what was happening but soon realized the seriousness of the situation, as the boat was approximately 25 minutes from shore at the time.

“I looked over (at Wolanski) and I’m like, ‘how are you getting wet?’ Like I couldn’t figure out where the water was coming from,” MacKenzie said in an interview with CTV News Toronto. “I happened to look around and the boat was sinking.”

MacKenzie said that there were around 30 other people on board the boat at the time – including at least one child and some seniors.

He said that most of the passengers were not wearing life jackets and that crew members “handed out rum” as the boat took on water.

“The craziest part about the whole trip was not the fact that the boat took on water,” MacKenzie said. “It’s that we left and nobody had lifejackets on, there was no safety, nobody talked about safety of this boat, what happens if [the boat was to take on water].”

Boat was taken to nearby island

The boat -- according to its operator Grupo Pinero -- took a blow to its hull on the starboard side, seemingly caused by a floating log.

In a statement provided to CTV News Toronto, the company said that that the captain followed “all the protocols starting with the request for a rescue service, inspection of the ship, and following the rules by everyone on board.”

The company said that after inspecting the boat the captain then decided to take it to Cayo Levantado, a nearby island, while a relief boat was en-route to take the passengers back to shore.

“As soon as the boat’s captain realized the breakdown, he asked for support and followed all the protocols,” the statement notes. 

Crew 'did nothing, they explained nothing'

Grupo Pinero said that its protocols requires all passengers to wear vests at all times but MacKenzie said that no one was wearing a lifejacket during the excursion. He added that over the 40 minutes that it took for the relief boat to arrive and safely transfer passengers, the crew “did nothing” to fit passengers with lifejackets either.

“We made sure that they all had lifejackets on,” he said about the children and senior citizens onboard. “The crew? Have no idea where they were.”

“…This was one of the single most terrifying things ever,” he said.

There were no reported injuries as a result of the incident and the passengers on board the boat all eventually made it back to shore safely.

When they did, MacKenzie said that Grupo Pinero asked passengers to sign legal documents about what happened. The document, an image of which was provided to CTV News Toronto, asked the passengers to agree that there was a “minor inconvenience” with the boat that was “immediately corrected” by the company.

According to MacKenzie, no one signed the document.

MacKenzie told CTV News Toronto that the tour was purchased through an Air Transat representative

In a statement, Air Transat said that they have been reaching out to all affected clients since the incident to offer a refund for the excursion, “and to personally ensure that the resolution of this matter meets their satisfaction.”

MacKenzie said that in the wake of the incident he is considering reaching out to a lawyer, as he’s concerned that the tour operator is not going to make necessary safety changes.

“Chalk it up to life experience or whatever,” he said. “But they’re not going to change what they do until somebody holds them accountable for the fact that it was extremely dangerous, what happened out there.”

Six people rescued from River Ouse in York after boat crash

Six people had to be rescued from York's River Ouse after their boat sank following a crash with a cruise vessel.

The group were on a small hire boat which capsized after colliding with the larger vessel near Lendal Bridge on Wednesday 24 April.

Pictures from the scene show life rings being thrown into the river as the smaller boat sank to the bottom.

City Cruises, which operated both boats, said its staff helped the rescue operation.

A spokesperson said: "As a result of the collision, the self-drive boat capsized and six individuals found themselves in the water.

"Our dedicated City Cruises team acted swiftly to ensure the safety of all individuals involved. Immediate rescue efforts were initiated and all individuals were successfully rescued from the water with no injuries reported."

Emergency crews were called to the scene.

Yorkshire Ambulance Service said six people were checked. One was taken to hospital for treatment.

North Yorkshire police said all six had been recovered from the water by the time officers arrived and were "safe and well".

City Cruises said the safety of passengers and crew was of the "utmost importance". It has begun an investigation into the incident.

Three killed after fishing boat capsizes off SA coast

P olice have located two more bodies following a boat capsize off the South Australian coast, marking the end of a 24-hour search and taking the tragedy's death toll to three.

Water police, PolAir and a Challenger aircraft scoured waters off the coast of Port Lincoln after five people failed to return from a fishing trip yesterday afternoon.

It's understood the fishing boat they were travelling on was hit by a wave off Spilsby Island and all five were thrown overboard.

Police located the bodies of the two remaining missing men about 9am and 2.15pm, after a first body was found in water about 6.30am.

A 13-year-old boy and a 44-year-old man, who 9News understands are father and son, were spotted by a rescue helicopter clinging to a reef about 2am, near where the boat upturned.

They were winched to safety and flown to an Adelaide hospital where they are now recovering.

The three other people are understood to be two more family members and a tour operator.

Just after 9am a second person was found dead in the vicinity of the vessel.

At about 2.15pm, police found the body of the third missing man.

Police weren't alerted to the incident until family members reported they had failed to return home, which was about four hours after the incident.

"We received no EPIRB (emergency position-indicating radio beacon) activation, no radio calls, no flares were sighted and from what the survivors have told us, there would have been no time to activate any of that anyway," SA Police Superintendent Paul Bahr said.

Police, local sea rescue, and a challenger aircraft from the Australia Search and Rescue (AUSSAR) are assisting with the search.

• Vorobyevskaya embankment  is part of Sparrow Hills nature reserve. This place opens a beautiful panorama of the river and city from the observation deck and is considered to be the place for taking serious decisions in life.
• Embankment in Kolomenskoye  Museum-Reserve has a special charm due to its peculiar geographical relief. The boat trip around Kolomenskoye would be the most peaceful in your life.

Different epochs

Taking a walk along the Moskva River by boat, you will witness the architecture of Moscow from different eras and styles. Archaeological studies indicate that already in the XI century there stood a fortified settlement on Borovitsky hill, which is now called the Kremlin. Little fortress could not accommodate all the residents of the rapidly growing city, and the Grand Duke ordered the construction of a new Kremlin, larger than the former.

Boat trip around Kolomenskoe Park

Nicholas Perervinsky monastery was founded at the time of the Battle of Kulikov (1380). The monastery, got its name from the surrounding area – “Pererva”, which can be translated like “tear off” and because of the location –  here it abruptly changed its course, turning to Kolomna, standing on the opposite bank.

Monasteries and temples

• Novospassky Monastery
• Founded in the 13th century on the site where now is located the Danilovsky monastery. After a few decades, in 1330, Ivan Kalita moved the monastery onto the Borovitskii hill of the Kremlin. However, in the 15th century, Spassky Monastery again moved, this time to a more spacious place on Krasnoholmskaya waterfront.
• Church of St. Nicholas in Zayaitskom
• Erected in the middle of the XVIII century in baroque style. The building survived after the 1812 fire, but the utensils were destoyed. Parishioners collected donations and restored the temple on their own. In Soviet times, it was closed and re-opened only in 1992.
• Cathedral of Christ the Savior
• The church was originally erected in honor of the victory over Napoleon and was being under construction for long 44 years. Notoriously demolished in 1937 to be a giant swimming pool under open sky. The current building was constructed in 1990s. It is the tallest and one of the largest Orthodox churches in the world.
• The temple was built in 1679-82, during the reign of Tsar Fedor Alekseevich, in late Muscovite Baroque style and can be characterized as bonfire temple. Each gable is a symbol of a heavenly fire.
• Novodevichy Convent
• The most famous concent and monastery in Moscow, presumably founded in 1524. Novodevichy’s status has always been high among other monasteries, it was in this monastery where the women of the royal blood, the wives of Tsars and local rulers of Moscow were kept in prison as nuns.
• St. Andrew’s church  (male acts as Compound Patriarch of Moscow)
• St. Andrew’s church stands right on the slopes of the Sparrow Hills, on the way down to the Moskva River, on the territory of the Nature Reserve “Sparrow Hills”. The monastery is small in size but is very cozy. It’s situated in a quiet courtyard surrounded by temples, fruit trees and flowers.

Cruising catamarans are some of the most comfortable boats to roam the water, making them fantastic for both long-term voyages and short-term vacations. Still, cruising catamarans can be great racing boats, but just how fast can they go?

Some of the fastest cruising catamarans include the Gunboat 68 (35 knots), Outremer 45 (25 knots), ORC50 (25 knots), FastCat 435 (20 knots), TS 42 (35 knots), and Lagoon 440 (20 knots). Yet, there are many more cats that can reach 35 knots safely. 

If you are interested in knowing about the fastest cruising catamarans, I have you covered. I will be discussing some of the most popular, fastest cruising catamarans and the features that make them so excellent for sailors in need of speed. You will learn more about each catamaran’s speed and amenities, and I will let you know a trick or two to maximize your speed under sail. 

How Fast Are Cruising Catamarans?

On average, cruising catamarans can reach top speeds of 15 knots , around 17.3 mph (27.84 kph). However, some exceptional, racing-designed cruising catamarans can reach up to 30+ knots in the right wind conditions.

Factors That Impact Speed

Weight & size.

When you consider a catamaran’s speed, you will need to keep in mind the boat’s weight and narrowness. A vessel that can travel at 15 knots will still move slower if the boat is heavy or has a wide, extensive hull. When increasing the total weight of the boat, the boat “sits” lower in the water, thus increasing water drag and reducing speed.

Why trimarans are faster than catamarans!

Now that we know how weight impacts sailing characteristics, it follows that; if you are planning on racing your catamaran, you should remove as much luggage or extra gear as possible. Eliminating as much weight as possible will help you travel at your cat’s maximum speed .

Narrow Hulls

The hydrodynamics of the ship will heavily affect your speed. Narrower boats can chop through the water with less effort, making slender ships with pointed hulls far faster than wide vessels. So if you are looking for the fastest one available, you should look for a slender hull.

Slim hulls vs. space is a common tradeoff for catamarans optimized for family sailing .

Wind will also affect your ship’s speed, so do not expect your cruising catamaran to reach the maximum speed without heavy wind. Generally, cruising catamarans have two large sails (at least) to power them through the water, and some are so efficient that they can travel even faster than the wind.

Although a strong wind is needed to energize the sails and move the boat, too much wind will instead make the sails less efficient, and maximum speed is most often attained at lower wind speeds but with flat water.

Light Weight Materials

Faster cruising catamarans are often made from carbon fiber materials and fiberglass to keep the weight down. If you are looking for the quickest catamaran that you can find, you should note the materials that the ship is made out of and try to get one that is primarily made from carbon, glass, and resin materials. 

While you are looking for the perfect catamaran for you, you should keep in mind what you NEED and what is NICE with your ship. Usually, this decision is between size and speed, but some of these excellent vessels have both. 

Lightweight materials are usually costly; for example, a carbon fiber mast will probably cost you +$20 000, depending on the cat’s size.

Gunboat 68 (+35Kts)

Gunboat 68 is a cruising catamaran designed to reach the highest speeds possible. Made by Gunboat, the ship uses Grand-Prix racing boats’ designs to develop the speediest cruising catamaran on the market. 

Gunboat 68 is made entirely from carbon composites, which keeps the ship lightweight and fast. Gunboat 68 is the perfect catamaran for anyone who wants to reach the highest speeds possible while maintaining control of the vessel and not bouncing around too much. 

Gunboat 68 has comfortable, spacious living quarters, though it also has a spacious deck with luxurious seating. Indeed, this cat has it all, making it one of the best cruising catamarans for racers and casual sailors. The design maximizes all of the living spaces and uses lightweight materials to add elegance and luxury to a speedy racing catamaran. 

Gunboat 68 is one of the fastest cruising cats out there, with its maximum speed at more than 30 knots . Gunboat 68 can achieve these fast speeds, thanks to its lightweight construction and narrow hull design.

The TS, or Tres Simple , cruising catamarans, designed by Marsaudon Composites, are some of the fastest cruising catamarans in the world. 

Marsaudon developed the ship’s plans using racing boats’ streamlined designs and combined them with a cruising catamaran’s comfortable living spaces. The TS 42 has an inverted hull which helps it glide on the water swiftly without requiring much fuel, but it also has a spacious below-deck area with plenty of luxuries.

TS cruising catamarans are often considered the fastest cruisers on the market, with their speed comfortably reaching upwards of 35 knots in the right wind conditions. Generally, TS catamarans can sail at 20 knots, even with moderate wind. They are the perfect catamaran for racers and high-speed travelers, and yet they still have the amenities of a pleasant live-in vessel. 

The TS 42 has a large galley and comfortable cabins, making it a cozy home or vacation vessel. With multiple bathrooms, large windows, and open lounge spaces, these catamarans are superbly comfortable to live in. 

The deck and cabin space are divided by a large, openable window, which adds extra light and ventilation to the living areas. It also has plenty of on-deck space, which is rare in such a small vessel with an inverted hull.

• Draft: 4.9 ft (1.5 m) with boards up and 7.5 ft (2.3 m) with boards down

Outremer 45

Based in France, Outremer (pronounced uutremeer 😉 ) designed their Outremer 45 to be a long-lasting cruising catamaran that sails smoothly at high speeds. The Outremer 45 can reach about 15 knots, but the most comfortable sailing speed is 10 knots. However, it can travel up to 25 knots in the right wind conditions, making it a quick ship with all of a perfect cruising catamaran’s luxuries. 

It is made for durability from carbon, vinyl ester, and divinycell so that it can last many years without repairs. The Outremer 45 has a narrow hull, and it is designed to be as thin as possible to maximize speed and fuel efficiency. Outremer 45 still has comfortable living quarters with large windows and lounge spaces within the boat. Indeed, it sacrifices no comfort for speed.

The Outremer 45 was initially designed to be a boat that would last 50 or more years, and it excels in its durability. It has an open, uniquely expansive side deck and plenty of on-deck conveniences that make sailing a breeze in the ORC50.

With supreme safety features such as tall railings, slip-free grips on deck, and enclosed lounge spaces, it is one of the safest catamarans available (is safety your top concern? I wrote a list of the safest catamarans on the market). 

• Maximum Speed: 25 knots
• Length: 48 ft (14.6 m)
• Beam: 23.3 ft (7.1 m)
• Draft: 3.3 ft (1 m) with boards up and 6.7 ft (2.04 m) with boards down
• Displacement: 8.2 to 11.1 tonnes

Marsaudon Composites ORC50

Marsaudon Composites designed the ORC50, or Ocean Rider Catamaran 50, with both speed and comfort in mind. The ORC50 can be used for cruising, but it is also a great racing boat that has been awarded honors from many races worldwide.

Marsaudon borrowed designs from racing skippers to plan the ORC50, bringing together a cruiser’s comfort with the speed of an award-winning racing boat. 

This cruising catamaran is lightweight, which allows it to gain speed at a fast rate, but still has comfortable living quarters inside the boat. It has a rotating carbon mast, which helps to eliminate turbulence over the mainsail and therefore increasing sail efficiency and speed!

With strong winds, the ORC50 can reach up to 23 knots , making it extremely fast for a cruising catamaran. The ORC50 can easily reach speeds much faster than the wind speed, which is a unique quality of this fast, yet comfortable catamaran.

The ORC50 is an excellent long-term living ship with its many organizational compartments, expansive galley, and well-ventilated sleeping cabin. It also has plenty of couches and seating areas built into the boat, and its intuitive design adds plenty of comfort to the cruising catamaran without weighing down the ship.

• Beam: 27 ft (8.2 m)
• Draft: 5.6 ft (1.7 m) with boards up and 8.9 ft (2.7 m) with boards down
• Displacement: 13 tonnes

FastCat 435

African Cat’s catamarans, including the FastCat 435, are designed for speed and racing. This ship is mainly composed of epoxy, fiberglass, and carbon components, making it very lightweight to ensure that it travels as swiftly as possible. 

The FastCat 435 may be as light as possible, but it is durable enough to last for many years in the most extreme conditions.

The FastCat 435 has comfortable living quarters and well-designed comfort spaces so that you can get the most out of your trips. The FastCat also has a green hybrid design, and it uses primarily electric power, which can help you prolong your sailing and use less fuel.

The FastCat is an excellent option for anyone who wants a smaller cat with a comfortable design and incredible speed. FastCat’s electric power is also a unique, favorable feature for anyone who wants to use less fuel.

• Length: 42.7 ft (13 m)
• Beam: 24.4 ft (7.4 m)
• Draft: 3.9 ft (1.2 m) with boards up
• Displacement: 2.4 tonnes

The Lagoon 440 cruising catamaran, like the FastCat, has an electric powering version, which cuts down on fossil fuel usage and ensures that your ship will keep moving. The Lagoon 440 is also among the easiest catamarans to maneuver, thanks to its electric drivetrain and automatic engines. 

The speed of the Lagoon 440 usually maxes out at 10 knots with low winds, but with higher winds, it can quickly gain speeds up to 20 knots (some argue even higher, but I’m doubtful). The Lagoon 440 is an excellent cruiser and comfortable catamaran, but it is not an all-out racing cat.

Lagoon is a well-known brand, but there are some caveats, and are Lagoons still making good catamarans?

Below the deck, the living spaces in the Lagoon 440 are magnificent. The ceilings are high, allowing the tallest of passengers to stand in the cabin. The many storage compartments and furnishings have a modern, elegant design. The interior is one large primary cabin with a few private spaces below the deck.

• Beam: 25.3 ft (7.7 m)
• Draft: 4.3 ft (1.3 m)
• Displacement: 10.5 tonnes

Fountaine Pajot Astréa 42

Fountaine Pajot designs some of the most luxurious yet speedy cruising catamarans available in the world. They are renowned for their safe, durable designs that make sailing a comfortable, relaxing experience. And on a personal note, i think the name sounds beautiful!

Their cruising catamarans use an inverted hull design that has become a signature mark of Fountaine Pajot vessels. This hull type allows the water to pass beneath the ship quickly, which increases the speed and fuel efficiency of the cat. 

The Astréa 42’s primary benefit is its spacious, comfortable living quarters and large, open deck spaces. The ship’s interior spaces have large windows, large lounging areas, and plenty of storage compartments. 

The cabin’s ventilation is also excellent, which reduces the classic musty smells of sea living. You can also get two different models of this catamaran, either in a one-cabin option or a two-cabin option, making it an excellent vessel for larger or smaller families.

The Astréa is ideal for long-term sea living and family vacations (it is not as fast as some more racing-oriented cats). Although the Astréa is not the speediest cat available, with its speed maxing out at about 10+ knots, even in favorable wind conditions, its luxurious atmosphere and comfortable cabin spaces make up for its relatively slow speed. 

Don’t get me wrong, despite its lower speed compared to the boats on this list, the Astréa 42 can still get you places quicker than many other cruising catamarans (and most monohulls). So, if you want all of the elegance and comfort of a cat and are not too worried about racing, this ship is an excellent option for you.

• Length: 41.3 ft (12.6 m)
• Beam: 23.6 ft (7.2 m)
• Draft: 4.1 ft (1.3 m)
• Displacement: 12.3 tonnes

Privilege Signature 510

The Privilege Signature 510 is a long-distance cruising catamaran designed for long-term voyages and sailing in extreme weather conditions. It features a durable, weatherproof design that will protect you from rainy and cold weather while sailing. 

The helm and living spaces are completely covered, making it safe to live in, even in cold or stormy weather. It also has an automatic sail adjustment system with the controls at the helm, allowing you to make any adjustments from the helm’s safety and comfort. 

Privilege Signature 510 also has an elegant, well-designed living space with plenty of amenities, including an accelerated cooling system, a spacious bathroom and kitchen, and plenty of windows for natural lighting.

With an elegant floor plan, this cozy ship is perfect for long-term living.

The Privilege Signature is not the fastest catamaran on the market, with a maximum speed of around 13 knots. Still, it is one of the quicker cats considering its elaborate amenities and comfortable size.

Although cruising catamarans are great boats for slowly cruising along the water, they can also be swift, substantial racing boats that reach speeds of up to 35 knots. These speedy cruising catamarans still come with all of the amenities of leisure boats, but they also reach incredible speeds without rocking or tossing.
