December in the Caribbean: Weather, What to Pack, and What to See

caribbean countries to visit in december

Richie Diesterheft/CC by 2.0

In the Caribbean, you can escape to warmer weather, celebrate local holidays and traditions, and of course, hit the beautiful white-sand beaches. December weather is comfortably warm and Christmas is celebrated with colorful festivities in a uniquely Caribbean way. If you can break away from family, friends, and the usual traditions December brings, a trip to the Caribbean may be ideal.

Caribbean Weather in December

With the threat of hurricanes and tropical storms past, December travelers can look forward to the Caribbean's average high of 83 F (28 C) and average lows of 73 F (23 C). Although, temperatures in Bermuda and the Bahamas tend to be on the cooler side. You might get rain on about one of every three days, but it's more of a light afternoon shower than a torrential downpour this time of year.

What to Pack

Pack some bathing suits,  summer clothing , and sunscreen for the Caribbean's warm, bright days. Nights can be a bit breezy, so bring at least one sweater or a pair of long pants just in case. If you plan to visit during the holidays, you'll want to bring along some nice attire, especially if you are going to attend a formal Christmas mass, candlelight service, or holiday meal.

December Events in the Caribbean

The Caribbean has a broad array of unique Christmas traditions. You'll find Christmas Markets in  Jamaica , Junkanoo in the Bahamas, parang music on Trinidad , and the Dutch Sinterklaas and his "Zwarte Piet" (Black Pete) helpers in Aruba and Curacao .

  • St. Lucia National Day : Parties and parades surround National Day in St. Lucia, including sports events, a Festival of Lights, a choir festival, market festival, and feasts. National Day is actually December 13, but the party goes on most of the month, mixing with the Christmas and New Year's celebrations. St. Lucia, the "Saint of Light" and the namesake of the small island, was one of the earliest Christian martyrs. The festival of lights is also celebrated in Sweden, Norway, and parts of Finland in honor of the saint.
  • St. Nicholas Day : This day is celebrated in the Dutch Caribbean, which comprises of Curacao ,  Aruba ,  St. Maarten , Bonaire , St. Eustatius, and Saba. Watch for St. Nicholas (Sinter Klaas) riding his white horse and trailed by his Zwarte Pete minions on December 5, St. Nicholas Eve. This is the day that good Dutch children hope to find their shoes filled with gifts.
  • Junkanoo : A celebratory parade and party, Junkanoo is exciting and colorful. The largest Bahamas Junkanoo party parades are in  Nassau , but you can also experience the intoxicating carnival atmosphere on  Grand Bahama Island ,  Eleuthera & Harbour Island ,  Bimini ,  the Exumas , and the Abacos. The festivals take place on Boxing Day and New Years Day.
  • St. Kitts National Carnival : Every Caribbean island celebrates  some sort of Carnival , but St. Kitts'  is unique in that it celebrates from Christmas until New Year's (mid-December through January 2). It's both a holiday festival and celebration of national pride. There are pageants, J'ouvert music (calypso-type music), food fairs, and street parties.

December Travel Tips

The weeks in early December are filled with bargain rates on hotels and airfare because this is typically a slow travel time. Many resorts cater to families looking to spend the holidays together by offering all-inclusive packages. Since nearly every Caribbean island has a majority Christian population, it's easy to find local holiday celebrations regardless of where you travel. Christmas cruises to the Caribbean are also an affordable, family-friendly option.

On the downside, while early December may be a cheaper time to visit, hotel and airfare prices rise sharply for the holidays and especially for the week between Christmas and New Year's , when many families have time off from school or work. Those looking for a traditional white Christmas obviously will be disappointed, as will those wanting a typical American-style holiday celebration as the Caribbean has few shopping malls, there are palm trees in place of Christmas trees, sorrel instead of eggnog, and so on. When you're willing to embrace new holiday customs and cultures, you'll be sure to have an exciting and unique winter vacation to remember.

5 best Caribbean destinations to celebrate Christmas this year

Escaping to the Caribbean for Christmas and swapping snow for sun, sand and tropical drinks sounds like a great way to bring some joy to the holiday season.

December weather in the Caribbean is particularly dry, with a “Christmas breeze” that locals wait for all year. From proximity and nonstop flights to affordable lodging, unique cultural festivities and an ideal party/relaxation balance, here are five Caribbean destinations to spend Christmas this year.

A drawing of a Christmas tree is etched in the sand next to a beach

1. Jamaica: fresh sorrel, fruit cake and reggae fests

The best part of Christmas in  Jamaica  is the food. The markets are livelier than ever with the season's favorite fruit – sorrel – in high demand. Feast on seasonal specialties like curried goat or ham with rice and beans, fruit cake and sorrel juice made with a hint of ginger and rum.

2. Dominican Republic: waterfalls, free concerts and nightlife

The season is particularly festive in the Dominican Republic , where Christmas holidays are celebrated through music, shopping and food. In Santo Domingo , shopping malls are beautifully decorated and host indoor arts and crafts markets featuring locally made products.

In the Zona Colonial, you’ll find live music daily, with free concerts beside Plaza Espana ’s giant Christmas tree every weekend evening.

In Puerto Plata , beaches and resorts are less crowded and outdoor adventures are plentiful. Hike to waterfalls in the countryside, tour a chocolate factory and witness the Christmas Eve tradition of pig roasting overnight. Dancing merengue and bachata until sunrise is also tradition so head to a few local bars or nightclubs for a little practice.

Sample Christmas dishes on or off your resort — pasteles en hoja are like tamales, made with plantain dough, stuffed and wrapped in a green plantain leaf. And don't forget to sample Dominican ponche.

A wooden pier extends into a shallow beach from the shore. Palm trees dot the shoreline and cover a beach house.

3. Belize: rainforests, culture and cayes

Christmas in Belize is a chance to experience some of its unique cultural events, while island hopping and hiking in rainforests. Lodging also remains reasonably priced, as more tourists visit in January and February.

Stay at a riverside lodge in Burrell Boom or in Crooked Tree Village , outside Belize City , for a traditional Kriol Christmas dinner of turkey with cranberry jelly, rice and beans, ham, potato salad, black cake and rum popo. On Boxing Day, head to the Burrell Boom horse races or to the Brukdong Bram celebration in Gales Point.

In Dangriga , Christmastime draws junkanu and charikanari dancers to the streets. Charikanari is a hunting dance; participants wear headdresses resembling a cow’s head, with real horns, and hunt a  “two foot” cow, dancing and teasing the crowds in the street.

Afterwards, hop to affordable Tobacco Caye for snorkeling and relaxation along Belize’s Barrier Reef.

4. The Bahamas: Junkanoo, shopping and seclusion

The Bahamas’ annual Christmas Junkanoo Festival on Boxing Day is one of the best reasons to visit. The colorful parade in Nassau , the largest of all on the archipelago, welcomes everyone on the islands to dress up and dance in the streets.

Christmas shopping attracts arts-and-crafts vendors from around the islands to Nassau. Visit Festival Place at Prince George Wharf for locally made items. Port Lucaya Market on Grand Bahama also just reopened. When you’re ready to escape the crowds, hop over to Eleuthera, Bimini or any of the Out Islands except for the Abacos, which remain closed after Hurricane Dorian.

Add proximity to the US, numerous nonstop flights, plus the chance to contribute to The Bahamas’ recovering tourism industry and Christmas in the Bahamas is a no brainer.

5. Puerto Rico: parties, old world charm and wild beaches

For either parties or seclusion at an affordable price, head to Puerto Rico . It’s an easy flight from the US, with no passport required for US citizens.

Overnight in Old San Juan explore its charming streets for shopping, history and food  and dance away to live salsa or bomba.

Vieques is an easy hop on the ferry from Fajardo; arrive early to ensure availability. You should also book your rooms and car rentals in advance. Continue the holiday party vibe on the busier side of Vieques in Esmeralda, or escape into the hills near wild black sand beaches.

The Best Caribbean Islands to Visit in 2024

By Brian Major

British Virgin Islands

I’ve been fortunate to travel widely across the Caribbean over the last 30 years. I’m also a descendant of Caribbean people, so many folks assume I’ve visited every island. Not likely—the Caribbean consists of 28 islands encompassing just over one million square miles. So while I’ve visited most, there are still a handful I’ve yet to encounter. But that’s a good thing. Many know the Caribbean of picture-perfect views —all lush green hillsides, soft beaches, sunny skies, sun loungers, and poolside cocktails. But that’s really just the white-sandy surface of this region, where each island has something distinct to offer. On Dominica , hiking is unmatched, notably its Boiling Lake, a flooded fumarole located in Morne Trois Pitons National Park, where you can traverse across the rim of an active volcano. The best island hopping is in the British Virgin Islands , while Barbados is the action island, where the historic Garrison horse racing takes place year-round.

If you’re looking to soak up some winter sun by a pool lounger and nothing more, then any island in the Caribbean will do—the hotels in St Barth's are amongst some of the best in the world. But if you’re willing to dig a little deeper and venture beyond the resort gates, these are the best islands in the Caribbean.

Which is the best Caribbean island for families?

When little travelers are involved, the ease of a resort jam-packed with activities can take the strain off parents and let everyone enjoy the trip. For this reason, Barbados is the ideal Caribbean island for families, and there’s everything from larger, more affordable resorts to smaller boutique offerings. For intergenerational holidays and trips with slightly older children, consider hiring out a villa— Oliver’s Travels allows customers to filter results by ‘great for kids.’

Barbados

Best island for: action

Barbados might just be one of the best all-rounder islands in the Caribbean. Some of the top hotels in the region are found here, as are some of the best beaches, all accessible to the public—there are no private beaches in Barbados. Poolside beverages are spiked with rum, distilled on the island and best learnt about at St. Nicholas Abbey, a plantation house, museum, and rum distillery. Those looking for more diverse action can find it at the heritage railway, the racing car circuit, and the Garrison Savannah, a popular horse race that takes place throughout the year. And then there are the surrounding reefs, where you can swim with turtles, snorkel with seahorses, and spy whales in winter months.

Where to stay: Sandy Lane Hotel is one of the most glamorous hotels on the island complete with a British or American country club vibe—there are three golf courses on the hotel grounds. For something more low-key, Little Good Harbour ’s rooms feel more like private cottages and its fuss-free restaurant, The Fish Post, is beloved as one of the best in Barbados. For more ideas, consult our list of the best all-inclusive resorts on the island .

Saint Lucia

Best island for: romance

The Caribbean is synonymous with honeymoons but it's St Lucia that tops them all when it comes to serving up romance. You can thank the island’s mountainous landscape for that—it’s all about a room with a view of the 2,000-foot high Piton mountains, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the island’s calling card.

There’s adventure to be found too, like exhilarating zip lines high above the island’s rainforest canopy or mud baths in Sulphur Springs, a geothermically active basin of hot springs and fumaroles within the the dormant Qualibou volcano in Soufrière.

Where to stay: Coconut Bay is the biggest crowd pleaser on the island—all inclusive and catering to couples, families, and even wedding parties. For something more private, Ladera is an eco-lodge where rustic suites have private plunge pools. See our edit of the best resorts in St Lucia for more.

Anguilla

Best island for: beaches

In a region characterized by beautiful beaches , Anguilla has the best in the region. Partly for their mesmerizing ribbon of blue water but also because their powdery white sands invariably host only a handful of other beach-goers. There are 33 beaches in total, and while each one I’ve encountered has been memorable, the standouts to see include Cove Bay, Maundays Bay, Rendezvous Bay, and Shoal Bay.

Anguilla is also a worthy choice for its culinary scene. Refreshingly there are no chain restaurants on the island. Instead, restaurants and eateries tend to be small family-run businesses. If you visit just one, make it Tasty’s, which serves up a stellar coconut-crusted fish and marinated conch salad by Anguillan chef Dale Carty.

Where to stay: The Aurora Anguilla Resort & Golf Club is the newest shiny address on the island, with seven restaurants and bars and a fleet of private jets transporting guests to and from the property. Find more editor-vetted Anguilla hotels here .

British Virgin Islands

British Virgin Islands

Best island for: island hopping

The British Virgin Islands (BVI) territory has few chain restaurants and no large hotels or mass tourism attractions. Instead, you’ll encounter turquoise waters, lush green hillsides, and distinctive cuisine and culture across the four main islands: Anegada, Jost Van Dyke, Tortola, and Virgin Gorda.

Hopping from island to island—whether via public ferry or private catamaran—is the characteristic way to explore the BVI. On my last visit I sailed to Jost Van Dyke’s White Bay, home to casual beachfront eateries serving dangerously delicious rum cocktails and locally caught fish. Another fantastic spot is Willy T’s Floating Bar and Restaurant near Norman Island. Moored offshore, the cargo ship has been converted into an ultra-relaxed eatery.

Where to stay: Located on a broad, secluded calm-water bay on Virgin Gorda, Rosewood Little Dix Bay has 80 villas and suites each staffed with a personal butler. The Reef House is one of three restaurants and features farm-to-fork dining with fresh provisions sourced locally.

Dominica

Best island for: diving

The calm waters surrounding Dominica make it one of the best diving spots in the world. The rainbow-colored seascape is best viewed at Champagne Reef, named for its bubbling waters generated by volcanic thermal springs rising from on the ocean floor. The reef also comprises plummeting cliffs, towering volcanic formations and the remains of a 17th-century Spanish shipwreck.

Another highlight is L'Abym, a dive site located on the island’s southern tip and suited to all skill levels due to Soufriere Bay’s gentle current. Underwater wonders are visible from 20 feet below the surface right down to a 1,500-foot maximum depth. An underwater wall extending its entire length gives the site its name.

Where to stay: Cabrits Resort & Spa Kempinski is the smartest place to stay on the island. All of the classic hallmarks are here—a full service spa, four swimming pools—but it’s the lush grounds, which incorporate Cabrits National Park, that make this spot memorable.

Grenada

Best island for: natural beauty

Grenada’s 133 archipelagic square miles are laced with waterfalls, hot springs and tropical rainforests across three main islands: Grenada, Petit Martinique, and Carriacou. Ringed by 45 white- and nine black-sand beaches, the hilly isles are dotted with acres of fruit and spice trees.

One-ninth of Grenada’s land mass is dedicated to national parks and wildlife sanctuaries, best seen on a guided hike of Grand Etang Forest Reserve. Sister Island Carriacou is a worthy day trip too, especially for the top-shelf diving and snorkeling.

Where to stay: Few places capture Grenada's understated magic like the Silversands Grenada resort , found at the sleepy end of the two-mile Grand Anse Beach. The biggest draw here is the 330-foot infinity pool, said to be the longest in the Caribbean, which stretches from the hotel’s entrance all the way to the sea.

Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico

Best island for: history and culture

There’s a distinct energy to Puerto Rico , one that draws upon a fascinating blend of Hispanic, African, American, and Caribbean culture and history. To see it start in colonial San Juan , the second oldest European-founded city in the Americas. Head to the old town where cobblestone streets are lined with colorful Spanish buildings housing trendy bars, boutique shopping and all-night entertainment.

Hundreds of thousands of Africans arrived in Puerto Rico via forced migration in the colonial era. Their contributions to the island’s culture, art, music and cuisine live on today in Loiza, home to Puerto Rico’s largest Black population. You can witness it via the artwork on display at Samuel Lind Studio, or at the Don Rafael Cepeda School of Bomba and Plena which puts on traditional music and dance workshops.

Where to stay: Caribe Hilton is within walking distance of historic Old San Juan and the Condado entertainment district. Designed in tropical modernist style by legendary Puerto Rican firm Toro Ferrer, the grounds incorporate 17 acres of tropical landscaping as well as nine restaurants and an oceanfront pool complex. See our edit of the best hotels in Puerto Rico for more.

St. Kitts and Nevis

St. Kitts and Nevis

Best island for: visiting two islands in one trip

Lush natural beauty and historic attractions are the hallmarks of this twin-island nation. Most travelers visit both islands, as smaller Nevis is a breezy 20-minute ferry ride from larger St. Kitts. Sightseeing on St. Kitts is best done via the scenic train—the only working railway in the Caribbean—which circumnavigates the island on routes that once transported plantation sugar cane. Another highlight is the Brimstone Hill fortress, built of hand-chiseled stones by enslaved Kittitians and now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Stand among the fort’s ramparts and cannon while taking in panoramic views of neighboring Saba, Statia, St. Maarten, and St. Barths .

Tiny Nevis’ resplendent landscape is overlooked by 3,232-foot high Nevis Peak, located at its center and visible from virtually every point on the island. Mountainside hiking and ATV tours uncover haunting ruins of colonial-era plantations and sugar mills.

Where to stay: Hide away in one of the traditional West Indian–inspired cottages at Belle Mont Farm . As the name suggests, dining here is farm-to-table, serving up freshly foraged organic fruit and vegetables plus seafood plucked straight out of the ocean.

The Best Caribbean islands to visit in December

Chic and sophisticated or laid-back and low-key? The Caribbean has it all

There is a seemingly endless array of islands to visit on a Caribbean yacht charter , so you are spoiled for choice when looking to pick your next luxury vacation on the water. And with different island vibes offering different flavours of experience, there is something for every taste – from laid-back tropical idylls to vibrant party spots.

Is December a good time to visit the Caribbean?

Escape the cooler northern hemisphere climes for the lush warmth of the Caribbean

December is an ideal time of year to visit the Caribbean for a yacht charter, with dependable sea temperatures, a warmer climate and generally less humidity than the summer months. Although its significant geographical spread and varying oceanic exposure mean that different parts of the Caribbean experience different weather systems, in December the average high temperature is an inviting 28C (83F) and the average low temperature is a balmy 23C (73F). Sea temperatures in the Caribbean fluctuate little throughout the year, hovering around 27C (80F), with as little as 3C (6F) variation.

The  Leeward Islands

Like the Great Bight on the BVI's Norman Island, the islands of the Caribbean are a cruising paradise, rich in natural beauty and well-sheltered bays

Home to some of the most popular places to visit on a Caribbean yacht charter, the Leeward Islands include the US and  British Virgin Islands , St Maarten/St Martin, St Barth, St Kitts and Nevis, Antigua and Barbuda, Anguilla, Guadeloupe and Montserrat, as well as some lesser-known islands.

Pick up a delicious lunch of grilled fresh fish at the Sandbox on Prickly Pear Island, BVI

Some of the most laid-back Caribbean vibes can be experienced on a yacht charter in the US and British Virgin Islands. Whether you are looking to get away from it all nestled in a remote anchorage or fancy a night of partying with sand between your toes, there’s something on offer.

The Caribbean is whatever you want it to be, from uninhabited islands to the bustle of the USVI's Charlotte Amalie and its superyacht-friendly Yacht Haven Grande

As some of the first islands to be settled on by the incoming colonial fleets, the US and British Virgin Islands are steeped in history and culture. St Thomas is a major transport hub that has a great superyacht marina offering and commercial airport alongside some stunning, long beaches. St John is quainter than her buzzing neighbour, with some excellent restaurants and anchorages as well as a submerged national park to explore while snorkelling.

White Bay, on the south coast of Jost Van Dyke, BVI, is home to the famous Soggy Dollar Bar

Jost Van Dyke has some of the best beaches in the whole region, not to mention the iconic Soggy Dollar Bar for a cocktail or two. And St Croix provides visitors a taste of local culture and history, with hermit crab racing making an unexpectedly fun activity for all the family.

Dozens of yachts in Gustavia's port and hundreds anchored off, St Barth is where the south of France meets the Caribbean

Arguably the most fought-after place to anchor among the most prestigious superyachts in the world is off the coast of St Barth between Christmas and the New Year. As well as the flurry of parties both onboard and ashore, you can indulge in some retail therapy at Gustavia’s many luxury boutiques, enjoy lavish lunches at the chic beach clubs peppering the island, and dance well into the early hours in one of the nightclubs in town. For such a small island, St Barth delivers entertainment and glamour in spades.

The view across Major's Bay, between the Park Hyatt hotel and Christophe Marina, towards neighbouring Nevis

St Kitts and its diminutive neighbour Nevis are growing in popularity as luxury yacht charter destinations, thanks to the alluring superyacht marina at Christophe Harbour. Here you will find a blend of authentic Kittitian culture and outstanding luxury facilities, including the superyacht harbour and marina village, the ‘ultra-luxe’ Park Hyatt hotel with its Miraval Life in Balance Spa, and a Tom Fazio-designed golf course on its way.

The Antillean crested hummingbird is just one of the natural wonders to look out for on a trek up to Mount Liamuiga's crater rim

Further afield on St Kitts you can discover a wealth of nature, history and culture among the island’s mountainous landscapes from colonial sugar plantations and fortresses to pristine black-sand beaches and tropical forests nestled under the peak of the dormant volcano.

Charming English Harbour with its original Nelsonian buildings

Few places in the Caribbean can equal the charm and warmth of Antigua, which is a much-loved stop for many yachting veterans. Falmouth and English Harbours are hotspots for the sailing community, though plenty of motor yachts also find themselves tied up stern-to at these historical marinas.

The wharves and quays buzz with Antiguan spirit as the sun sets

Head to Nelson’s Dockyard at English Harbour, where you can discover the 18 th century naval hub that Nelson’s fleet once called its home in the Caribbean; today you will find a selection of restaurants, bars and beaches to explore. Falmouth Harbour has a distinct buzz, with its fun bars and cafes playing reggae and serving up authentic Dark ‘n’ Stormy cocktails that are not for the faint of heart.

The view from Shirley Heights across English Harbour and, beyond, Falmouth Harbour

On Sundays, make the pilgrimage up to Shirley Heights look-out to listen to local musicians while the rum punch flows and everyone keeps an eager eye out for the infamous ‘green flash’ at sunset.

Antigua also offers some excellent snorkelling and diving spots to the south and east of the island, thanks to its many coral reefs, drop-offs and shipwrecks; Nonsuch Bay is a particular favourite among those in the know, as the quiet anchorage provides an unforgettable sunset dinner spot.

Saint Martin

The beach on the western tip of Pinel Island, jutting into Cul-de-Sac Bay, illustrates the more unspoilt nature of St Martin

Saint Martin is the French half of the island that is shared with the Dutch Sint Maarten. You will find a distinctly different flavour here, especially in the cuisine and culture on offer, whereas the Dutch side of the island is more developed, with superyacht marinas, restaurants and bars in abundance. As part of the Leeward Islands, it is an important regional yachting hub and regular point from which to embark on a Caribbean yacht charter, located just a short distance from St Barth and St Kitts.

The view southwest from Mount Scenery on lush, rainforested Saba

Orient Bay is one of the most popular yachting spots on the island, while Saba – located around an hour’s cruise from St Martin – is known as the 'Unspoiled Queen' thanks to its pristine rainforests for hiking and teeming reefs for scuba diving.

Trinidad and Tobago

There is a distinct creole flavour to the islands of Trinidad and Tobago

Situated to the south of the Caribbean, close to the South American mainland, are the beautiful islands of Trinidad and Tobago. A distinctive Creole culture runs deeply through everything from cuisine to music, alongside culinary influences from the East Indian settlers, offering a vibrant and unique experience for those exploring Trinidad and Tobago on a yacht charter.

Keep your eyes peeled for the white-tailed sabrewing hummingbird

Nature lovers – particularly bird enthusiasts – will be in heaven exploring the meandering mangroves by boat, or heading to the Asa Wright Nature Centre on Trinidad as well as the Tobago Main Ridge Forest Reserve on Tobago.

Paramin's Peak overlooks beautiful bays like Maracas Beach

Hike up to Paramin’s peak, the highest point in Trinidad, to observe the meeting point of the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. Alternatively, pick one of the secluded, pristine beaches that Trinidad and Tobago are renowned for and your charter yacht crew can set up a full beach BBQ and treasure hunt for all the family.

Experience the celebratory delight of Carnival in Trinidad

Timing your visit to coincide with the annual Trinidad Carnival – hosted on the Monday and Tuesday before Ash Wednesday – will reward you with a spectacular show of music and dance to the distinctive steel drum beats of calypso and soca. But Christmas is also an important point on the local calendar, with plenty of celebrations to take part in, so December is also a great time to book a yacht charter to Trinidad and Tobago.

South Caicos

A classic Caribbean scene in laid-back Trinidad

The Turks and Caicos islands epitomise the kinds of dreamy tropical scenery you’d expect to see in a ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ film; think swaying palm trees, powder-soft beaches and dazzling turquoise waters. South Caicos island is less developed than its neighbours, with a particular focus on eco-tours, including those taking in the mangrove wetlands that are home to numerous species of sea birds.

December also means you may see humpback whales migrating south from the chilly north Atlantic to give birth

Head to the Long Cay National Park, where you might encounter the native rock iguanas along one of the remote beaches. December is also a great time to see pods of majestic humpback whales migrating past the South Caicos. And if you are a keen sport fisher, then snapper, grouper, jacks, barracuda and cero can be found aplenty in the South Caicos, not to mention some world-class bonefishing spots in the shallow flats and sand to the west of the island.

Grenada is known as the 'Spice Island'

To experience Grenada by charter yacht is to step back in time to when the Caribbean was less developed as a tourist destination. Here you will receive a warm welcome from the friendly locals, while the mountainous landscapes, lush green rainforests and black sand beaches invite you to explore Grenada’s abundance of nature.

Belmont Estate used to grow coffee when founded by the French in the 1600s. Today cocoa is the main product

Known as the ‘Isle of Spice’, Grenada was once home to the cultivation of nutmeg and mace on a vast scale, and today you can visit some of the still-active farms, including the Belmont Estate Plantation, which grows cocoa beans and spices among other crops.

Paddle in the pools of the Seven Sisters waterfall

The capital of St George is a quaint port town with a natural lagoon that is popular with visiting superyachts. Pull on some hiking shoes and head to the trails of the Grand Étang National Park and Forest to discover the colourful local species of flora and fauna, or take a dip and pose for a picture at the Instagram-worthy Seven Sisters waterfall.

You may be lucky enough to meet some of the locals

If beaches are more your thing, then you won’t be disappointed by a visit to the sandy shores of Grand Anse, Pink Gin and Morn Rouge, while a trip to the Levera National Park, on the quieter northern side of the island, might reward you with views sea turtles.

Vibrant reefs teem with colourful fish

Diving and snorkelling should be high on the to-do list of anyone visiting Grenada, too, particularly at the 'Land of Reefs' off Petite Martinique and Carriacou. While the world’s first underwater sculpture park at Moliniere Bay features 65 concrete artworks that are slowly being colonised by reef species to create entirely new habitats for the sea life.

Without question, December is one of the best times to visit these wonderful island chains. So why don't you book today and give yourself something to look forward to?

25 Best Islands to Visit in December

' data-srcset=

Sharing is caring!

Many people consider summer to be the best time of year to travel. I completely disagree. I absolutely love travelling in the off-season and autumn and winter are slowly becoming my favourites. One thing I love about winter travel is how varied it is. You can be shoeshowing through a forest one moment, take a flight and be lounging on a Caribbean island the following day! Speaking of which, if you’re wondering what the best islands to visit in December are, you’ve come to the right place!

the best islands to visit in December - Malta

Islands escapes often conjure up images of sun-soaked paradises and colourful cocktails. And while this is mainly the case, I’ve also decided to throw in a few non-tropical islands into this list. If you’re considering heading to an island in December, don’t set your sights on the Caribbean just yet!

The Best Islands to Visit in December

For the perfect mix of sun, sea, and snow (trust me!), I’ve rounded up 19 of the best islands to visit in December. Without further ado, these are my top pics.

Average Temperature : 17°C (62°F)

Let’s start off with an island that isn’t tropical at all. But is still one of the best island escapes to have over the winter months. Malta is a hidden gem in Europe. It represents everything good about winter sun while remaining a somewhat off-the-beaten-path experience. Especially in December.

malta is one of the best islands to visit in December

You likely won’t be able to catch a tan in Malta in winter. But, you will be able to explore the island without the summer crowds, go hiking, see some fantastic history, and some stunning natural beauty.

The island is super easy to get around with public transport. Buses can take you to most areas of the island and, while some can be unreliable (mainly the ones coming from the airport – we learned this the hard way), the majority are reliable, efficient, and affordable. However, if buses aren’t your style, it’s fairly simple to hire a car . If you’re from the UK, you’ll also be pleased to know that they drive on the left side of the road which makes getting around very easy.

beautiful buildings in Malta

While on the island, a few must-sees including the old town of Rabat with its winding cobbled lanes, the historic Mdina, walk the heritage walking trail, and visit the historic temples. I also highly recommend you take a ferry to Gozo, where you’ll find more fantastic temples, beautiful gardens, and a towering citadel with great views.

Malta is also pretty good for New Year’s Eve with a great party in Valletta and fireworks.

2. Phuket, Thailand

Average Temperature : 30°C (86°F)

If you’re dreaming of a tropical island escape during the winter months, you can’t go wrong with Phuket, in Thailand. Located south of the country, you can get here via a 1-and-a-half-hour flight from Bangkok . However, some airlines will also fly here directly. I flew into Phuket International Airport, and from there, a short ride took me to my hotel

Phuket in Thailand

It’s a fairly touristy destination , but this all depends on where you stay. The island is big enough to offer a bit of everything.

You’ll find pristine beaches and crystal-clear waters, great for swimming and paddling. Explore the bustling markets in Old Phuket Town, where you’ll find a mix of cultural treasures and quirky street art, and for outdoor lovers, activities like snorkelling in the Similan Islands or hiking to the Big Buddha are a must.

Then, don’t forget to indulge in the local cuisine; the street food here is incredible and so cheap! You can find delicious pad Thai noodles made in front of you for about £1!

Top Tip: Choose your accommodation wisely to avoid the hustle and bustle if that’s not your thing. Patong Beach is lively with its vibrant nightlife, perfect for party animals, while Kata Beach offers a more laid-back atmosphere.

3. Tenerife, Spain

Average Temperature : 21°C (69°F)

For a dose of volcanic beauty and outdoor adventure, heading to Tenerife in December is always a good idea. The Spanish island is an absolute gem. But, in winter, when the summer crowds have left and the prices have dropped, it’s the perfect escape!

Located in the Canary Islands, just off the northwest coast of Africa, Tenerife boasts the ‘eternal Spring,’ with a warm climate year-round, making it one of the best islands to visit in December.

The island is a paradise for nature lovers with lush green landscapes, towering volcanic peaks, and beautiful beaches. You can explore the unique landscapes of Teide National Park , relax on the golden shores of Playa de las Américas, or take a scenic drive through the Anaga Rural Park.

Tenerife is one of the best islands to visit in December

When flying in, most international visitors land at Tenerife South Airport (TFS), conveniently connected to major cities worldwide. From there, getting to your destination is a breeze with taxis and buses readily available. You can also get to Tenerife by ferry from some of the other Canary Islands.

With average temperatures around 18°C in December, Tenerife offers the perfect blend of warmth and adventure during the winter months.

Average Temperature : 18°C (64°F)

This is another of the islands in Europe that I consider a bit of a hidden gem . Before my trip to Cyrus, so many people told me that there was nothing to do there except lounge on the beaches and catch a sun tan. But, they could not have been more wrong.

Cyprus is the perfect blend of history, culture, and mild Mediterranean weather. Situated in the eastern Mediterranean, it boasts a rich history and modern charm. December might not be peak beach weather, but with temperatures hovering around 17°C, it’s ideal for exploring without breaking a sweat.

beautiful views over Cyprus

Wander through the cobbled streets of charming villages like Omodos or immerse yourself in the fascinating history at the Tombs of the Kings in Paphos . There’s also the wonderful ancient Kourion amphitheatre with its stunning views, the tiny Kolossi Castle, and the gorgeous Aphrodite beach where the goddess was reportedly once spotted.

If you’re here for the festive season, the atmosphere in Cyprus during December is electric. The locals really know how to celebrate the holiday season with delicious food, warm hospitality, and a fantastic fireworks display during New Year’s Eve.

5. Gran Canaria, Spain

Another fantastic option in the Canary Islands, Gran Canaria is one of Europe’s best islands to visit in December. This vibrant island is ideal for those seeking winter warmth.

In December; Gran Canaria’s average temperature is around 21°C, making it an ideal winter destination. It can get a little cooler at night though, so you may want to pack a light jacket. Even so, it’s a great temperature for both beach strolls and mountain hikes .

stunning views in Gran Canaria, Spain

Like with Tenerife, there’s lots to do here. Explore the golden sands of Playa del Inglés, visit the dramatic dunes of Maspalomas, or wander through the historic Vegueta district in Las Palmas. The Christmas markets are also well worth a visit, where the island’s unique blend of Spanish and African influences comes through.

Top Tip: If you don’t plan on visiting for Christmas, you’ll find that prices are much cheaper. This is one of the most expensive destinations to fly to for the festive season in Europe because so many people want to escape for some winter sun. The start of December is much more affordable.

6. New York City, USA

Average Temperature : 5°C (41°F)

New York? An island? Well, yes, in fact, it is! The island of Manhatten might not be your traditional island escape but I can’t think of a better city to visit during December (except, perhaps, London ).

Picture the iconic skyline decorated with festive Christmas lights, the city streets dusted with snow, and the famous ice rinks popping up all over the city. New York comes alive in December and it’s definitely one of the best times to visit.

New York at Christmas

It’s definitely not warm, with temperatures hovering around 4°C, but if you fancy a festive escape, you can’t go wrong. A few of the must-sees in New York in winter include ice skating at Rockefeller Center, exploring the festive window displays along Fifth Avenue, and watching a Broadway Show at the Radio City Music Hall.

Top Tip: Don’t miss the dazzling displays at Dyker Heights in Brooklyn for a Christmas lights hidden gem.

7. Saint Lucia

Average Temperature : 28°C (82°F)

If you fancy a trip to what is arguably one of the most beautiful Caribbean islands to visit in December, you can’t go wrong with Saint Lucia. With lush landscapes, turquoise waters, and a tropical escape, this Caribbean gem, located in the eastern part of the region, is a slice of paradise that promises an unforgettable winter getaway.

It’s fairly easy to reach with a flight to the Hewanorra International Airport (UVF). From the UK, a few airlines fly direct including TUI and British Airways, but most will include a stopover in the States. I’d recommend staying in the charming town of Soufrière for its blend of local culture and stunning views of the iconic Pitons.

St Lucia is one of the best islands to visit in December

December in Saint Lucia means temperatures hovering around 27°C, creating the perfect climate for exploring. Dive into the vibrant marine life with a snorkeling adventure in Anse Chastanet or embark on a scenic hike up Gros Piton for breathtaking panoramas. Don’t miss the Friday Night Street Party in Gros Islet for an authentic taste of local music, food, and dance.

8. Puerto Rico

Average Temperature : 19°C (66°F)

Tucked away in the heart of the Caribbean, this island paradise is the perfect blend of Spanish influence, tropical beauty, and warm hospitality. From Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU), a quick ride gets you to the heart of San Juan, where the charm of Old San Juan awaits with its colourful colonial architecture and cobblestone streets.

Puerto Rico

December is one of the best times to visit Puerto Rico, with temperatures hovering around 26°C. This is ideal for both exploring the historic forts and relaxing on the beautiful beaches.

You can explore the local culinary scene with a mofongo feast (a Puerto Rican comfort food made from mashed plantains), and don’t miss the bioluminescent bay in Vieques for a magical nighttime kayak adventure.

Also, I recommend you venture beyond the tourist hotspots to places like Culebra or El Yunque National Forest for a taste of Puerto Rico’s natural wonders.

Average Temperature : 2°C (35°F)

Our first trip to Iceland was in December, and it still remains one of the best places I’ve ever visited. Located in the North Atlantic Ocean and frequently referred to as “the land of Fire and Ice”, Iceland is one of the best places to visit if you love outdoor adventure and natural beauty.

Iceland waterfalls in December

The landscapes are stunning.

Surprisingly, you may not get snow in Iceland in December. The country typically sees the most snowfall in January and February . But, you can still expect icy temperatures, unpredictable weather, and rain. Like the UK , Iceland can be pretty rainy!

It doesn’t really sound like I’m selling it, but if you’re looking for one of the best islands to visit in December, Iceland should be high on your bucket list. Some of the country’s top sights include the Golden Circle , the black beaches on the south coast, the famous Blue Lagoon , and the countless breathtaking waterfalls. You can even dive between the tectonic plates if you wish!

Church, Reykjavik, Iceland

I also highly recommend visiting Reykjavik town centre. The city has great nightlife, lots of fantastic restaurants, some of the quirkiest museums in the world (Penis Museum, anyone?), and wonderful architecture.

Top Tip: For a more secluded hot spring experience, venture beyond the popular spots and discover the lesser-known hot springs like Reykjadalur.

Average Temperature : 7°C (44°F)

I will never stop telling people how great the UK is to travel to . December is one of the coldest months of the year to travel to the UK, but it’s also easily one of the best. With festive markets up and down the country, a whole host of activities, Christmas light trails , and decorations in all the towns and cities, and one of the best New Year’s Eve Fireworks displays in the world, it’s no wonder so many people flock to the UK in winter. Especially London .

London at Christmas

Most international visitors land at London Heathrow Airport (LHR) or Gatwick Airport (LGW). From there, it’s only a short train ride to the centre of London and from there, you can get a train to pretty much anywhere . Trains run to the south, midlands, and even as far as Scotland in the north.

Nonetheless, most people stay in London for the festivities. And, to be honest, I don’t blame them! Here, you can witness the dazzling lights along Oxford Street, explore the magical Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park, or catch a classic Christmas play in the West End. There are also so many fantastic Christmas decorations in London , from Covent Garden to the South Bank.

The streets of Edinburgh in December

If you’d prefer to head to the Scottish capital, Edinburgh is just as festive . Stroll along the Royal Mile, where the Christmas market comes alive with festive treats and handmade crafts and visit the famous Christmas market with its German stalls and Ferris Wheel.

Top Tip : Don’t miss the quaint Christmas markets in smaller cities like Bath or York . Areas like the Cotswolds and Cambridge are also worth visiting in winter.

11. Bali, Indonesia

Average Temperature : 3°C (37°F)

A captivating tropical paradise in Indonesia, Bali is an unforgettable escape. Nestled in Southeast Asia, it’s one of the best islands to visit in December. You can expect pretty good temperatures in Bali in December, with weather hovering around 30°C (86°F).

You’ll also find lush landscapes, pristine beaches, and a delightful cultural heritage with historic ruins and temples. Explore the vibrant local markets, and savor the flavors of mouthwatering Indonesian cuisine. Like Thailand, food is pretty affordable here, so you’ll find it a pretty cheap winter travel destination.

Beaches in Bali

On the cultural side, you can embark on a cultural journey to ancient temples like Uluwatu and Tanah Lot. Immerse yourself in the mesmerising rhythm of traditional Balinese dance performances. And, for nature enthusiasts, don’t miss the breathtaking rice terraces in Ubud or the underwater wonders of Amed’s crystal-clear waters.

Whether you’re dreaming of a laid-back Christmas in luxurious resorts or seeking adventure riding the famous waves at Uluwatu Beach, Bali has a range of experiences. It’s a destination where the holiday season unfolds in diverse ways, perfect for embracing the local customs and traditions along the way.

12. Okinawa, Japan

Okinawa, Japan is a tropical paradise known for its rich culture, traditions, and beautiful beaches. Okinawa is one of Japan’s 47 prefectures and is part of the Ryukyu Islands. Closer to Taiwan than Mainland Japan, Okinawa is a popular tourist destination for travellers from Eastern Asia and the United States given the heavy military presence on the island.

Okinawa has a subtropical climate with average winter temperatures between 19 – 22 degrees Celsius. With its comfortable temperatures, Okinawa is a popular winter escape for many.

Okinawa is one of the best islands to visit in December

Although Okinawa is an island, there are many things to do here especially when it comes to nature and water activities. Diving is the number one attraction here and divers flock to Okinawa all year long, even during the winter months.

Okinawa is said to have some of the best diving spots and healthiest coral in the world. Other than diving other water activities include snorkeling, boating, and parasailing. If water activities are not high on your to-do list, you can shop at Kokusai Dori, visit Shuri Castle, or visit some of the WWII Sites.

The best way to explore Okinawa is by car and many of the resorts are located in central to northern Okinawa.

13. Jamaica

Average Temperature : 27°C (80°F)

Jamaica is hands down, one of the ultimate destinations to soak up the sun during winter. This island paradise is a go-to spot all year round (except during hurricane season). The prime time to experience this island is from December to April when you’ll find the best weather.

Up in the northern part of Jamaica, is the most touristy part of the island, stretching from Negril and Montego Bay to Ocho Rios and Port Antonio. The beaches are beautiful, and the coastline is a picture-perfect Caribbean island. There’s no shortage of water sports to dive into either!

Jamaica

Once you’ve settled into your beachside retreat, why not kick things off with a refreshing dip in the pool or a laid-back drink at the pool bar? Take a leisurely stroll along the beach to catch the sunset. For an adventure along Jamaica’s scenic coastline, consider hiring a private boat or joining a group cruise.

If you’re in the mood for a different kind of nature-filled thrill, head to Dunn Falls in Ocho Rios. This popular spot, nestled in a natural park, boasts the famous 65-foot Dunn’s River Falls. You can actually climb these and it’s a fantastic experience.

Whether you’re a beach lounger or an adventure seeker, Jamaica’s got the perfect blend of sun, sea, and excitement for your winter getaway.

The island of Aruba is known for its beautiful white sand beaches and family-friendly activities, and it has warm weather all year long. However, it’s definitely one of the best islands to visit in December and a perfect winter travel destination!

Aruba is a little island located in the Caribbean Sea near South America, and it’s relatively easy to get there by flying from the US. There are even nonstop 3-hour flights to Aruba from US cities like Miami and Fort Lauderdale in Florida.

Aruba is one of the best islands to visit in December

Winter temperatures in Aruba hover around 27°C (80°F) during the daytime, which is perfect for relaxing on the beach and going swimming. Some of the best beaches in Aruba include gems like Arashi Beach and Baby Beach, which have soft white sand and blue water, without being too crowded. For a remote beach with almost no tourists, check out Grapefield Beach on the east side of Aruba.

There are lots of other things to do in Aruba as well. One of the best activities is to go on an ATV tour in the Arikok National Park, which has a rock bridge and a natural tide pool where you can swim in the ocean without having to worry about the waves or currents!

15. Turks and Caicos

One of the best islands to visit in December in North America is the tropical paradise of Turks and Caicos. North of Haiti and southeast of the Bahamas, Turks and Caicos is a chain of British Caribbean islands that contain some of the most beautiful beaches in the world.

Turks and Caicos is known primarily as a getaway for well-off Americans and Brits. It’s undeniably one of the most expensive tropical destinations on the planet, but those who can afford it are greeted with spectacular white sand, clear turquoise water, friendly locals, and wondrous sea life.

Turks and Caicos

Popular activities on the islands include scuba diving, snorkelling, kayaking through mangrove forests, horseback riding in the water, and relaxing on the beach. The islands are particularly famous for having hundreds of beautiful villas that can be rented out by the week. The villas are great for large families or groups of friends.

The winter season features the most pleasant temperatures, with January highs averaging about 28°C (80°F). It’s also peak tourist season, so resorts and villas tend to jack their prices up for the season. It’s worth it, though, for an escape from the brutal northern hemisphere winter!

16. Madeira, Portugal

Average Temperature : 15°C (59°F)

If you’re looking for a unique European travel destination for your December escape, then look no further than Madeira, Portugal. Located about 1,100 km from the coast of Portugal and 960 km from the Azores, Madeira is known affectionately as “the Hawaii of Europe.”

This magical island is only a short, 1 hour and 45 minute flight from Lisbon and, with an average temperature of 59°F in December, it’s the perfect Christmas travel destination. Simply book a flight on Ryanair or TAP Air Portugal into Cristiano Ronaldo International Airport (FNC), and get ready for the holiday festivities to begin!

Views over Madeira, Portugal

Madeira is a Christmas haven for those seeking a blend of traditional festivities and mild winter weather. Each December, the island springs to life with vibrant decorations, twinkling lights, and irresistible holiday charm.

Spend your Christmas holiday sampling local delicacies and shopping for unique souvenirs at the Funchal Market, tapping into your adventurous side with a hike to Pico do Arieiro, or bundling up for a dolphin and whale watching tour on an eco catamaran .

When it comes to the best time to plan your trip to Madeira , the answer is Christmastime every time

Top Tip: Madeira has one of the best New Year’s Eve fireworks displays in Europe, so if you plan to ring in the New Year in Madeira, you’ll need to book well in advance. Flights dramatically increase their prices closer to these dates.

17. Maldives

Average Temperature : 28°C (84°F)

The Maldives is a tropical paradise in the Indian Ocean, south-southwest of Sri Lanka. It consists of 26 coral atolls, which are made up of more than 1,000 islands. The average winter temperature ranges from 25 to 29°C (77 to 84°F).

If you aim for a destination that screams paradise, you have come to the right place; the clear aqua water allows for many water activities, such as snorkelling, kayaking, and jet skiing (to name a few) and does not even include the array of underwater activities.

The Maldives

If you are looking for romance, stay at one of the many overwater bungalows or beach huts, where you can open your eyes each morning to a sea so beautiful that you will still think you are dreaming. There is plenty to do on the islands, including cocktails by the pool, yoga at sunrise or a romantic candlelit dinner by the oceanfront.

Getting to your island resort is just as fun! You can hop on board a seaplane for an out-of-this-world experience or catch a ride on the resort boat for a quick and easy transfer.

The Maldives is one of the best islands to visit in December

Maldives is not just for couples; many resorts cater for families too, so when choosing the best one, research before you go. This paradise is easily one of the best islands to visit in December.

18. Maui, Hawaii

Average Temperature : 22°C (71°F)

Visiting Maui in December offers a unique, tropical getaway and is one of the best islands to visit in the winter months. While the northern hemisphere embraces the chilly winter, Maui enjoys mild temperatures, making it an ideal escape from the cold.

Maui, Hawaii is a great island to visit in December

The island has some of the most beautiful beaches in the world with golden sands, and bright blue waters, perfect for sunbathing, and water activities. Winter is one of the best times to visit Maui if you love nature and wildlife as December marks the beginning of the humpback whale season.

There are lots of incredible whale-watching excursions offered across the island which offer a once-in-a-lifetime chance to spot these majestic creatures in their natural habitat. It’s also the ideal time for hiking and exploring the natural parks as the weather is not too hot. Take advantage of the lush landscapes by exploring the scenic Road to Hana or hiking through Haleakalā National Park.

19. Curacao

One of the best islands to visit in December is the Dutch Caribbean island of Curacao . It’s located in the south of the Caribbean just off of Venezuela in between Aruba and Bonaire, two other Dutch islands.

What makes it a great location to visit in the winter is the weather. It’s just below the hurricane belt and is less likely to rain during your trip. You can expect warm temperatures around 30ºC and a light breeze.

Beach in Curacao

One of the best things to do in Curacao is hit the beach as the island is full of beautiful turquoise coves. Some popular spots are Cas Abao Beach, Playa Kenepa and Mambo Beach. It’s also known for its colourful, Dutch colonial buildings in the capital city, Willemstad.

You can walk along the waterfront and the Queen Emma Bridge to see the colourful storefronts. To see a different side of the island, head to Shete Boka National Park, where you can find underground caverns and rocky inlets. Because of the weather, you’ll have a great time exploring the island.

20. Koh Phangan, Thailand

Average Temperature : 29°C (84°F)

Koh Phangan is a beautiful tropical island in the Gulf of Thailand, to the east of the Thai mainland. It neighbours the much larger Koh Samui island.

Throughout the whole winter, you can enjoy balmy weather with December averaging from 25°C to 29°C (77°F to 84.2°F). The rainy season is officially over in November, but you may still experience some rain.

Koh Phangan is not just any ordinary tropical island with pretty beaches. There are just so many different things to do in Koh Phangan . It’s considered a spiritual place for many and the area around Sri Thanu is full of yoga centers and wellness retreats. The whole island is dotted with temples of all kinds.

Koh Phangan, Thailand is one of the best islands to visit in December

There are also wonderful hiking opportunities on the island – you can hike to a secluded beach or the top of the highest peak.

Koh Phangan is amazing for digital nomads, too. There are many lovely cafés ranging from traditional Thai to modern Western.

And then there’s the monthly Full Moon party, which has made Koh Phangan famous worldwide. In high season, which covers winter, there are often also Half Moon parties held at the Haad Rin area.

21. St Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands

Looking for a winter escape? Consider St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands , a paradise in the Caribbean with December temperatures around 77°F to 82°F.

Swap your snow boots for flip-flops and enjoy a variety of activities from kayaking in Magen’s Bay to exploring the island’s rich history.

With its warm people, stunning landscapes, and convenient travel logistics, St. Thomas is a top choice for a winter getaway.

22. St Kitts and Nevis

If you are looking for a hidden gem winter destination in the Caribbean then St Kitts and Nevis should be on your list. It is one of the best islands to visit in December, but as the smallest country in the Americas, it is often overlooked in favour of larger islands. Don’t let the small size fool you however as there is still plenty to do in St Kitts and Nevis.

Stunning scenery in St Kitts and Nevis

Take a ride on the historic Scenic railway and discover the history of the sugar trade or visit the UNESCO world heritage site Brimstone Hill Fortress. If you want to relax then head over to one of the beaches, check out the beach bars on The Strip or have a lovely day trip to the sister island Nevis which has some of the best beaches in the Caribbean.

If you are visiting in late December you will be in time to catch the annual Sugar Mas Carnival parades which take place from 26 th December through to January 2 nd every year.

23. Dominican Republic

The Dominican Republic is located in the Caribbean on an island called Hispaniola that it shares with Haiti. The main language spoken is Spanish and the currency is the Dominican Peso. The capital and largest city in the Dominican Republic is Santo Domingo. Popular tourist destinations include Punta Cana, Puerto Plata, La Romana, etc.

The country is known for its gorgeous landscapes, which include beaches, mountain ranges, and tropical rainforests. It is the perfect winter getaway for those seeking warm weather and beautiful beaches. Mid-November to March is the dry season with temperatures ranging from 25 to 30°C (77 to 86°F).

Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic

This time of year offers a welcoming escape from colder climates and provides opportunities for relaxation, adventure, or cultural experiences. There are so many things to do in the Dominican Republic – swim in the turquoise waters, go ziplining, lounge on their pristine beaches, try local food, explore the national parks, go for a dune buggy trip, and so on.

As fun as the Dominican Republic is, keep in mind that the winter is the peak tourist season so it’s advisable to book the resort and the activities in advance to ensure a seamless and enjoyable vacation.

24. Borneo, Malaysia

Borneo is the third-largest island in the world and is shared by Malaysia, Indonesia, and Brunei. December is a great month to visit the island. It’s a transitional period between the wet and dry seasons, which means a little rainfall but, more importantly: fewer tourists! The average temperature in December ranges hovers around 30 degrees Celcius, making it ideal for outdoor activities although it can be very humid.

Borneo is one of the best islands to visit in December

As a traveller, you can reach Borneo via flights starting from metropolitan cities like Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, and Jakarta. Kuching, Kota Kinabalu, and Balikpapan are the main cities on the island and from there, domestic flights, ferries, and bus transport can be used to explore the island.

Borneo is mainly known for its incredible biodiversity. The island’s forests are home to orangutans, pygmy elephants, and proboscis monkeys. You can explore these forests through guided tours in more remote areas, however, many national parks like Bako National Park , Gunung Gading, and Tanjung Datu in Sarawak province are also accessible without taking an expensive tour.

Wildlife in Borneo

For a first-time visit, the Malaysian province of Sarawak is the most accessible for tourists, with many facilities in the capital of Kuching, easy car rental, and a bus line that goes all the way to Brunei and Sabah. If you like diving, make sure to visit the island of Sipadan, known for its incredible underwater world!

25. Tahiti, French Polynesia

An incredible destination to visit no matter what time of the year it is, but especially during the winter is Tahiti. The island is one of the best islands to visit in December.

It’s located in the South Pacific Ocean and easily accessible via direct 8-9 hour flights from major international airports, like as LAX and SFO. And with average winter temperatures ranging from a balmy 28°C high to a pleasant 21°C low, the island beckons those seeking a warm respite during colder winter months.

Beyond its inviting climate, Tahiti boasts an array of activities for travellers of every type. 5 Warmest Caribbean Islands in December

The warmest Caribbean islands in December include southern destinations such as Aruba and Curaçao. But a few other choices are worth a look.

Historically, Aruba and Curaçao have average high temperatures in the upper 80s Fahrenheit in December. Both islands are among the most southern islands in the Caribbean. They lie about 78 miles apart near the coast of Venezuela.

The smaller nearby island of Bonaire also has average temperatures in the high 80s Fahrenheit in December. But it is not nearly as popular with cruise and hotel visitors as Curaçao and especially Aruba.

Aruba has an average daytime temperature in December of 87 degrees Fahrenheit over a 30-year period, according to the Meteorological Department of Aruba. It has an average nighttime temperature of 79 Fahrenheit. Water temperatures are usually balmy and comfortable. However, the average rainfall for Aruba in December is higher than normal at about three inches.

Curaçao has average daytime temperatures of 86 degrees Fahrenheit, according to the Meteorological Department of Curaçao. But it averages slightly more rain than Aruba at nearly four inches.

We have been to both Aruba and Curaçao multiple times. Both islands are good choices for hotel and cruise visitors. Aruba is the more commercial and more popular of the two.

3 More Warm Islands

Grand cayman.

Several other destinations rank among the warmest Caribbean islands in December.

Surprisingly, Grand Cayman averages the same daytime temperatures in December as Aruba even though Grand Cayman is quite a bit farther north.

December is a transition month from the hurricane season to the dry season. Average rainfall is about three inches compared to more than seven in November and less than two from January through April, according to the National Meteorological Service of the Cayman Islands.

But Grand Cayman’s weather has one bigger negative: nighttime temperatures. The average nighttime temperature is only 67 degrees Fahrenheit. It will bring water temperatures way down, especially in the mornings. Swimmers may find that water temperatures plus trade winds will sometimes make seawater too chilly for swimming.

The hugely popular cruise destination of St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin islands is another warm Caribbean island during December.

It has an average daytime temperature of 86 degrees Fahrenheit and an average low of 73, according to the U.S. National Weather Service. So water temperatures are warmer than Grand Cayman.

The quiet French island of Guadeloupe takes fifth place as the warmest Caribbean island in December with an average daytime temperature of 85 degrees Fahrenheit, according to historical data from France Meteo.

Like other Caribbean islands, December is a transition month for Guadeloupe between the rainy and dry seasons. It has an average rainfall of about five inches during the month, which makes it the rainiest of the five warmest islands.

If the risk of rain sounds unappealing, vacation planners may consider other islands that are slightly less warm and have a lower risk of rain. They include Barbados, St. Lucia and St. Maarten.

Snow-capped mountains, quaint villages and mouthwatering cuisine (much of which involves some form of melted cheese) make the French Alps a classic winter getaway. Most ski resorts open by early December, so you can get an early start on the slopes for the season, or just take part in the lively après-ski experience in iconic destinations like Val d'Isère and Chamonix. What's more, many villages like the châteaux-studded Annecy amp up the charm with cozy Christmas markets throughout the month. Make the trek to the Finnish Lapland for the ultimate Arctic experience. Finland's northernmost region promises a deep layer of snow all winter, perfect for skiing or sledding down the longest toboggan run in Europe. Most flights to this region land in Rovaniemi, home to Santa Claus Village, where you can meet the man in red, step across the Arctic Circle or embark on a reindeer sleigh ride. Though you'll only see about four hours of daylight, this makes for prime conditions to view the dazzling aurora borealis from the comfort of one of the glass hotels in the region.

December is one of the most popular months to visit the Bahamas – and for good reason. By the time this month rolls around, the threat of hurricanes has passed, making it terrific time to enjoy the outdoors. Spend your days lounging on one of the Bahamas' many beaches, snorkeling or diving in the crystal-clear water or taking a boat tour to a private island . What's more, if you're visiting around the holidays, you'll catch the travel-worthy Junkanoo festival , which celebrates Bahamian culture with parades and festivities on Boxing Day and New Year's Day.

Although Phuket, Thailand, offers a consistently warm climate year-round, its dry weather and calm water in December make this month a great time to visit. Plan on spending most of your time sunbathing, swimming, scuba diving and more at beautiful beaches like Nai Harn and Kata Noi. But remember, December falls within Phuket's peak tourist season, so you won't find many deals for flights and accommodations during this month. Avoid a holiday visit in late December for slightly better rates.

Located in the eastern Himalayas, Bhutan is a backpacker's dream due to its breathtaking landscapes and unmatched preservation. The remote kingdom's focus on cultural and environmental sustainability means heritage sites like the cliff-clinging Paro Taktsang and the riverside Punakha Dzong are never overcrowded. But cooler winter temperatures (averages range from the 30s to the 60s, depending on elevation) mean you'll encounter even fewer tourists. While a trip to this intriguing destination won't be cheap, a low-season visit can drive down the price of lodging and tours.

Nestled in southern Chilean Patagonia, this national park offers travelers a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Hailed among hikers as one of the most scenic destinations in the world, the park is home to turquoise lakes and dense forests, plus massive Grey Glacier and the towering granite of Cuernos del Paine. December offers up to 17 hours of daylight, allowing plenty of time for extensive hikes. But even though December is part of Patagonia's peak summer season, temperatures drop dramatically after nightfall, so visitors will want to pack layers.

If Old Man Winter has you dreaming of warming things up, consider a trip to the Spice Island. Grenada, a tiny island in the Caribbean known for its aromatic spices like cinnamon and nutmeg, boasts steady temps in the 80s. It's not surprising that dozens of holiday movies are set in New York. Dazzling sights like the iconic Christmas tree and ice skating rink at Rockefeller Center, decked-out window displays at Macy's and horse-drawn carriages in Central Park conjure up holiday cheer throughout the city. And while this metropolis offers plenty to do throughout the year, festive shows, Christmas-themed pop-up experiences and even the nip in the air make December one of New York's most magical months. Just be prepared for a bit of sticker shock; the holiday season is also one of the most popular (and expensive) times of year to visit.

If you're willing to brave the cold, travel to Prague for a fun and festive winter vacation. The city turns into a winter wonderland in December, with snow-dusted buildings and Christmas markets selling everything from locally made jewelry to toys to Christmas ornaments. While the Northern Hemisphere transitions to winter in December, Rio de Janeiro enters its peak summer season. And although this is one of the wettest times of the year here, you'll still enjoy optimal warmth and mostly sunny conditions. As such, there will be plenty of opportunities to see must-visit sights like the Christ the Redeemer statue or Sugarloaf Mountain. If you're keen on experiencing Rio's lively party scene during your visit, be sure to time your trip around Réveillon. This popular New Year's Eve celebration on Copacabana Beach draws millions of people annually with its music, dancing and fireworks.

The holiday season in Germany's fourth largest city can only be described as magical. Cologne hosts a handful of Christmas markets, including the popular Advent village at Cologne Cathedral, which boasts 150 stalls. When you're not taking in the city's imposing architecture or getting into the jovial spirit with a glass of Kölsch beer (a Cologne original), pop into Museum Ludwig to view modern art or the Chocolate Museum for tasty samples. Combat the dreary weather – average highs are in the low 40s and rain is common – by soaking away the chill at a thermal spa such as Neptunbad or Claudius Therme.

It's easy to fall in love with this Canadian destination, especially when it's covered in fresh snow. You'll be enchanted by Old Québec's sights and sounds as it transforms into a Christmas village. Shop for gifts (or for yourself) in Quartier Petit-Champlain, home to one of the oldest shopping streets in North America. Plus, with its 17th- and 18th-century architecture, French-speaking Quebec City allows you to soak up European culture without dropping the cash for a flight across the pond. Just be sure to bundle up; temperatures can drop to the single digits in December.

  • Not only are these spots some of the safest family friendly Caribbean islands, but they also offer beautiful scenery, family activities, low crime rates, and a commitment to tourism safety, making them ideal islands in the Caribbean for families with children.

The ability to travel as a family, with small children or even teenagers, is a great memory for families to create together. Excitedly enough, vacations aren’t always just about crafting memories that will last a lifetime; studies have even shown that traveling makes children perform better in school and may even extend their love for education into their careers.

When choosing vacation destinations for families, though, travelers should look into many aspects, including budget, accommodations, excursions, and dates, all of which play major factors in the final decision. However, those traveling with a family shouldn't overlook safety, even when planning to visit any of the beautiful vacation destinations in the Caribbean islands. Indeed, there are a number of Caribbean Islands that are safer than others (especially for solo female travelers) , which would make better vacation spots for families with children in particular.

While the Bahamas are often safe (especially the Abacos Islands) , places like Haiti, Puerto Rico, and even parts of Jamaica may not be the safest islands in the Caribbean for families, whether it may be due to a high crime rate, a surge in illegal substances, or major and frequent hurricanes. Luckily, here is a list of the safest Caribbean islands for families on vacation, from Antigua and Barbuda all the way to St. Barts!

Antigua & Barbuda

The only major risk in antigua and barbuda is the hurricane season.

Antigua and Barbuda have become a paradise for digital nomads , thanks to their zero income tax, natural beauty, and safety. These safe Caribbean island destinations are especially famous for pristine beaches and historical sites, so whether exploring Nelson's Dockyard , indulging in water sports, or savoring the local cuisine, visitors can do so with confidence.

The island's commitment to tourism safety and the warmth of its residents contribute to its reputation as one of the safest Caribbean islands to visit for families. That said, people should perhaps avoid the island between July and November due to the hurricane season.

  • When to Visit: Mid-December to mid-April
  • Safety Index: 43.61
  • Scenic Spots: Shirley Heights Lookout , Valley Church Beach, Devil's Bridge
  • Activities: Stingray City Antigua , Dickenson Bay , Pigeon Point Beach

Barbados is considered one of the most family-friendly islands in the Caribbean

Another one of the best Caribbean islands for families is Barbados; the island is known to have endless possibilities for all ages, countless underwater caves to explore, and informative tours of stunning historic abbeys, all of which appear on lists of things to do in Barbados on a vacation . Additionally, Barbados is considered one of the highest-ranking islands in terms of safety for families .

Barbados has plenty of the Caribbean's best-kept secrets ; however, it's perhaps most known for its flying fish, which is the country’s symbol and on the national flag. This meal is one of the most authentic Bajan dishes to try ; it's normally stewed and served on Fridays with cou-cou, tomatoes, onion, and herbs. To pair with this dish, parents can enjoy the finest and oldest rum in the world, Mount Gay Rum , which dates back to 1703 (the company also offers tours of its factory!).

Attracting nearly a million tourists per year , tourism plays a huge role in the economy of Barbados, and the locals and shop owners are known to be some of the kindest people in the Caribbean. Many of the best beaches in Barbados are family-friendly, too, and some are even known to have incredible pink sands to contrast the turquoise water (the stunning Crane Beach, one of the most beautiful beaches in Barbados, comes to mind!).

  • When to Visit: December to April
  • Safety Index: 52.87
  • Scenic Spots: Animal Flower Cave , Bathsheba Beach, North Point , Crane Beach, Rockley Beach
  • Activities: Harrison's Cave Eco-Adventure Park , St. Nicholas Abbey and Steam Railway , Carlisle Bay

Among the most important things to know before visiting Barbados is that camouflage clothing and items are illegal (yes, even fashion articles with camouflage print). Anybody arriving in Barbados seen to have any items with camouflage on them will have them confiscated by airport officials (they keep the items and return them to tourists upon departure from the country). Airport officials might also search luggage for any more camouflage items and confiscate them temporarily until travelers depart the country. Tourists must also never wear or carry any camouflage clothing or items in Barbados; it's highly offensive and may result in action from law enforcement.

Enjoy this picturesque Caribbean island without a care in the world!

Travelers seeking low-key Caribbean islands that receive fewer tourists than the most popular spots should check the Dutch Caribbean Islands, especially Bonaire. The tiny island is renowned for its exceptional coral reefs, diving opportunities (though there are plenty of things to do in Bonaire other than scuba diving ), and low crime rate .

Visitors can explore the diverse marine life bustling at Bonaire's amazing dive sites , along with the island's beautiful landscapes and quaint capital, Kralendijk, without significant safety concerns. The island's commitment to preserving its natural treasures also aligns with its reputation for providing a serene and secure environment. On that note, the island's green initiatives and marine conservation efforts are among the reasons Bonaire is a top scuba diving destination in the Caribbean.

Ultimately, Bonaire's charm and safety record make it an appealing choice for those seeking a peaceful Caribbean escape.

Cayman Islands

The cayman islands have the lowest crime rate in the caribbean.

The Cayman Islands offer many things to do and see , but they're especially renowned for their pristine beaches and vibrant marine life. It's not the powdery white-sand beaches and colorful underwater world that solely beckon visitors, though; it's also the fact that this entire destination is among the safest Caribbean destinations for families. In fact, locals are proud of having the lowest crime rates in the Caribbean .

Aside from being the Caribbean island with the lowest crime rate, the Cayman Islands also prioritize hospitality and offer a range of upscale resorts and amenities. Tourists can feel at ease when exploring the renowned Seven Mile Beach or indulging in water activities. Overall, the Cayman Islands' commitment to safety and natural beauty makes them an inviting destination for those seeking a tranquil and secure Caribbean getaway.

Resorts and gated communities make this one of the safe Caribbean islands for kids

We'll be humming that song "Kokomo" by the Beach Boys all day long here in Aruba! Aruba's white sandy beaches, friendly locals, and insanely blue waters are just a few of the many reasons why people love to vacation in Aruba , especially families. Another reason is due in part to the island being consistently safe for families thanks to its “first-world” modern infrastructure .

For extra security, it's recommended to stay within a resort or gated community ; however, Aruba might still have some pickpocketers and scammers around the island. Still, that doesn't take away from the fact that the island is filled with beautiful, natural formations to explore, dreamy beaches like Baby Beach and Eagle Beach , and wildlife adventures that the entire family will enjoy!

  • When to Visit: January to May

The only thing families should fear in St. Lucia is bad weather!

Not only is St. Lucia a budget-friendly and romantic getaway, but it's also an incredibly safe island in the Caribbean with plenty of all-inclusive family resorts . Families can enjoy nature excursions around the island, overwater restaurants, and swimming in crystal clear waters without a second thought.

Saint Lucia has seen some crime in recent years, but it's still considered safe compared to many Caribbean islands (incidents of petty crime, like in most parts of the region, are still a slight problem). Currently, the US Department of State has a Level 1 travel advisory for St. Lucia , which means to exercise normal precautions.

Perhaps the biggest concern in St. Lucia is hurricane season, which typically occurs between June and November. For clear skies and warm temperatures, families should plan their trip during the winter and early spring (actually, Saint Lucia is one of the most incredible islands to visit in December !).

  • When to Visit: February to May

Grenada, known as the "Spice Isle," is another one of the safe destinations in the Caribbean for families to visit. The low crime rates in Grenada allow visitors to enjoy the country's beauty without worries.

Grenada is also renowned for its lush landscapes, spice plantations (hence its nickname!), and welcoming locals. Exploring the island's historic forts, diving into vibrant coral reefs, or simply enjoying the pristine beaches can be done with confidence. St. Martin is a French island, complete with French cuisine with Caribbean ingredients, whereas St. Maarten is an English island that was once run by the Dutch. The English side has various nightlife activities like rum tasting, dancing, and shows. The latter also has the majority of the shopping district of both islands.

As for security, generally, these are among the Caribbean islands that are safe for families; in fact, St. Martin has almost no crime, however, tourists should always be careful of petty crimes like pickpocketing .

For those looking for excursions and sightseeing trips, the islands provide plenty of daytime activities to accommodate the whole family. Day trips to Anguilla are also available through a car rental company or through a tour guide. The drive there and back totals under three hours. However, to offer a true Caribbean experience, families are encouraged to take the local ferry across .

With extremely low crime rates , Anguilla is the perfect Caribbean destination for families

Considered another one of the safest islands in the Caribbean for children and parents, Anguilla is a haven for those with young kiddos. Luxury tourism is the reason there are many villas and condos that can be rented in Anguilla, similar to the Bahamas. Each villa offers families a private balcony, some with private pools and hot tubs, with a kitchen and multiple bedrooms to accommodate each family member.

Although this island has very low crime rates, for safety reasons, it’s recommended to avoid hurricane season in Anguilla, which generally begins in June and ends in November. That said, most all-inclusive resorts and tourist attractions will often have their lowest prices between May and August, so a little Mother’s Day getaway to celebrate is great for saving money, but the risk of hurricanes and storms does linger.

Anguilla is also filled with child-friendly activities like horseback riding, swimming with dolphins, epic sandcastle contests on the beach, and even glass-bottomed boat rides to view the marine life below.

St. Barts (Saint Barthelemy)

This exclusive celebrity hotspot is easily the least dangerous caribbean island.

It is not uncommon to walk the streets filled with luxurious villas and a small number of upscale resorts and bump into a celebrity or movie star on the French Caribbean island of Saint Barts; the island is considered one of the most expensive and exclusive islands in the Caribbean, which is also why it's perhaps the safest Caribbean island for families (and everyone else, really).

Amazingly, St. Barts is so safe that some locals even leave their cars and homes unlocked . Moreover, the island has a 0% murder rate and a below-average crime rate, earning it first place among the safest Caribbean islands to visit on the Miami Herald's list . That said, pickpocketing and purse snatching, among other forms of petty crime, do still occur, so visitors should be mindful when storing and carrying valuables, just as they would anywhere else.

Unlike most Caribbean islands, the best time to visit St. Barts is between November and June, but it's especially hot from December until April. However, December is so popular among vacationers that in order to book for the month, it will have to be done a whole six months ahead of time.

  • When to Visit: November to April
  • Danger Level: 0
  • Scenic Spots: Beach of Cayes Cove , Colombier Beach, Gustavia
  • Activities: Shell Beach, Eden Rock , Anse de Grande Saline
