An Insight into Chittorgarh Tourism

A perfect reflection of the opulent Rajput history, Chittorgarh is a traveller’s opportunity to have a rendezvous with glorious past. Rich in architecture splendour, Chittorgarh’s prized possession remains its mighty and majestic fort, which indeed is a fine example of Rajputana architecture. This, one of the best sigtseeing places in Rajasthan once was exalted for its eighty four waterfronts. Alas, a few remain today and all of them are either rain fed or are natural areas of catchment. Sprawling in an area of 700 acres, and on a hillock at an elevation 180 m, this popular place to see has many historical stories of honourable Rajput women, sieges, chivalry and romanticism. It is said that this famous tourist attraction in Rajasthan was built in the Epic Mahabharata times when Bhim one of the Pandavas created Bhimtal (a lake) within its folds. The Rajputs knew how to establish strategic vantage towers in their battlements which now help you to enjoy panoramic views of the surroundings of Chittor. A zigzag path runs for 1 km from the new part of Chittor to Ram Pol, the main entrance to the fort, holding monuments and ancient architecture that are a must see.

Amongst top places to see in the fort are Vijaya Sthambha, Kirti Sthambha, a silent lake with pristine waters called the Gaumukh Kund, sacred Jain and Hindu temples and magnificent palaces. Another must see in the fort remains the ruins of Nagina Bazar and Moti Bazar, which were once the bustling markets within this fort. The best time to visit Chittorgarh is during the Jauhar Mela, which is held annually to commemorate the painful sacrifice made by Rani Padmini and the ladies of court in the fort after a war was lost by their men. Apart from the fort, tourism in Chittorgarh is about visiting the two wildlife sanctuaries that sprawl in the district. Tourism in Chittorgarh has increased manifold after the UNESCO declared it to remain preserved as a World Heritage Site in the 2013 convention. We at Tour My India, offer the best Chittorgarh travel guide to help you to plan your holiday better. With us, you can choose best hotels, transportation means and of course book best holiday packages. We ensure to make your visit special and memorable.

Chittorgarh’s history dates back to the seventh century. Its previous name, Chitrakut, was in honour of Chitrang, a local Rajput lord. From the seventh through the sixteenth centuries, it was the seat of government for the local Rajput Sisodia clan.

This town’s past is marked by bloodshed and sacrifice. In the Middle Ages, it was captured three times by Muslim emperors. The first was created in 1303 by Delhi’s Sultan Ala-ud-din Khilji. In order to capture the stunning Padmini, the queen of Chittorgarh, Khilji besieged this hill fort. Chittorgarh rose to prominence in the middle of the 15th century under the renowned Rajput king Rana Kumbha.
