Find bus rides stressful? New COTA phone app aims to lessen the fear

cota bus trip planner

First-time bus riders often tense up, not sure how to pay, where to sit or whether they'll miss their stop.

For those on the autism spectrum or with broad-based neurodiverse disorders, the trepidation can be worse.

That's why the Central Ohio Transit Authority on Wednesday began offering a phone app to make the process easier.

COTA is partnering with Magnusmode, a Toronto-based company that supports autistic and neurodiverse people in activities of daily living and life skill development.

The MagnusCards life skills app has a series of tips and lessons on planning trips, paying fares, boarding buses, riding and transferring. The app is free to download.

“We are excited to introduce this digital tool to make COTA more accessible for anyone who needs to get to jobs, school, healthcare, food or entertainment across Central Ohio,” said Sophia Mohr, COTA’s chief innovation and technology officer. “MagnusCards is a new step toward bringing transit to our neurodiverse customers but also an ideal way to enable new customers to use COTA’s service, regardless of their abilities.”

The MagnusCards app uses visual cues, step-by-step instructions and optional audio in either English orSpanish to guide users through the transit process. Though the decks are geared toward those with autism-like conditions, they can those simply unfamiliar with COTA, from teens to seniors to new Americans.

"COTA is among the first transit agencies in the United States to introduce MagnusCards to its ridership and serves as a leader in making Columbus an inclusive place to live and a model city for how communities, companies and services can improve access to services," said Nadia Hamilton, Magnusmode founder and president.

Bridgeway Academy, a Columbus-based private school for children and young adults with autism and other developmental disabilities, helped COTA test the app.

"COTA really wanted to make sure they were making everything as acceptable as it could be," said Janelle Maur, the academy's director of advancement. "Our students served as kind of a test group."

"We are hopeful to be able to expand this further — for parks, public places, anywhere someone could go," she said.

CCS/COTA Partnership Provides Supplemental Transportation Services for High Schoolers

Columbus City Schools is partnering with the Central Ohio Transit Authority (COTA) to provide supplemental transportation services for all CCS students in grades 9-12 only .

Sample card

Students will have unlimited access to fixed-route transit services so they have access to jobs, tutoring, club/athletic practices and can use the pass if they miss their school bus. Additionally, CCS students who use COTA//Plus, which is available in South Columbus, will have access at no additional charge using the COTA//Plus app.

These passes are supplemental and do not replace the district’s yellow bus services provided to students who qualify for transportation to and from school.

CCS piloted the Student Success Cards over the last several school years and now, all students PreK-12 will receive Student Success Cards starting this school year. Student Success Cards are personalized IDs featuring a photo, name, and ID number. Students are expected to receive cards by mid-to-late September. During the school year, these cards can be used to:

  • Swipe on and off the bus in the morning and afternoon (Coming second semester)
  • Serve as ID during the school day
  • Access online learning
  • Check out books and other materials at any Columbus Metropolitan Library branch
  • In addition to these benefits, grades 9-12 only will be able to use cards to access COTA

To help prepare students who have never ridden COTA before, there are tips parents/guardians can follow to prepare:

  • For students with access to a smartphone, we recommend downloading the Transit app . From the Transit app, students can plan and track their COTA rides in real time . Students and their parents/guardians are also welcome to use the Trip Planner feature on COTA’s website.
  • Regardless of whether you choose to plan trips via the Transit app or COTA’s Trip Planner, the process is simple. Just enter the starting location and destination for your trip. The Transit app or COTA’s Trip Planner will automatically plan route options.
  • The Transit app and COTA’s Trip Planner both have built-in timing tools to help you reach your destination. You can choose to leave immediately (“Leave now”), set a desired departure time (“Leave at”)  or set a specific time when you need to arrive at your destination (“Arrive by”). For example, if you have an appointment at 6 p.m., then we recommend selecting “Arrive by” when planning your trip so that all your planned routes get you to your destination in time for that appointment.
  • The best way to prepare is to take a practice trip with your student! Fare for adults is only $2 per trip . If you have any questions or concerns, you can ask your COTA operator or call Customer Care at 614-228-1776. COTA’s trained Customer Care Advocates are here to help you ride COTA with confidence.

A reminder to high school students using their Student Success Cards to board COTA buses: Students will need to simply tap the card on the validator located directly to the right as they board the bus (see photo below). Do not try to scan it on the fare box next to the operator.

Also, high school students using their Student Success Cards for the first time will need to tap the card on the validator TWICE to activate it. During future trips, students will only have to tap the card once each time they board.

High School students will have unlimited access to fixed-route transit service so they can access jobs, tutoring, after-school activities, and athletic practices. Students can also use the pass if they miss their school bus.

These passes are supplemental and do not replace the District’s yellow bus services provided to students who qualify for transportation to and from school.

How to Navigate the City Using COTA

As an Ohio State student, you have the opportunity of   using the COTA (Central Ohio Transit Authority) through your BuckID. This initially sounds great but can get confusing very quickly if you don’t have experience with using public transportation. Here are some questions you may have:

  • Where are the bus stops?
  • Where do the different bus lines go?
  • How do I know when the bus is coming?

Here’s a simple guide from COTA:  https://www.cota.com/how-to-ride/

COTA recommends using their trip planner on their website, but if you have a smartphone the Transit app makes travelling with COTA incredibly easy:  https://transitapp.com/

Through the app you can choose a destination and it will then show you the best bus lines and route to take from your current location. It will track the bus that you choose providing current updates as to when the bus is coming and where it is.

After determining your route, using the bus is simple. COTA buses stop at bus stops when they see somebody waiting there. When boarding the bus, be sure to swipe your BuckID as that will serve as your fare for the trip. Pay attention to the stops you are passing as that will clue you in as to when you need to get off. When you know which stop to get off at, be sure to pull the yellow wire to alert the driver that you need to get off at the next stop. Due to COVID, current protocol is to exit the bus from the back door so as not to crowd the front of the bus.

Most useful lines for Ohio State students:

  • 2: Travels North and South on High Street, useful for exploring outside of campus
  • 31: Travels through South campus, Med campus, and takes you close to Lennox Town Center

COTA Bus

Get Around Columbus with COTA.

The Central Ohio Transit Authority (COTA) provides public transportation within Central Ohio and the Greater Columbus area. With a service area of 1.2 million residents, COTA provides more than 19 million passenger trips annually.

Several COTA routes provide service between Ohio State's campus and locations throughout Columbus. Ohio State's Campus Area Bus Service (CABS) and COTA share multiple bus stops on campus, allowing for easy transfers between the two systems.

Thanks to the OSU/COTA partnership, undergraduate, graduate and professional students have unlimited access to COTA’s entire bus system just by swiping their BuckID when boarding. You must be enrolled in the current semester for a class that occurs on main campus and have the COTA fee on your statement of account to use your BuckID on COTA.

Are you sticking around the city when you’re not enrolled in classes? Then consider taking advantage of COTA's Summer Student Pass Program , which runs from June to September, and costs only $62 for the entire summer.

To purchase a Summer Student Pass, visit the COTA Pass Sales Office (33 N. High Street). To qualify, you must bring your BuckID and have been enrolled in the previous semester.  COTA will use Ohio State University enrollment data to determine your eligibility.

Visit COTA for information about routes and schedules.

Faculty and Staff

The Ohio State University offers a COTA Bus Pass Payroll Deduction Program for all faculty and staff members who are eligible for pre-tax payroll deduction.  Under the program, employees may elect to have unlimited monthly COTA bus access through a pre-tax payroll deduction taken from their pay each month. Once enrolled and the first payment/deduction is complete, the program works by having participating employees use their BuckID for access by swiping it upon entrance to the COTA bus.  Faculty and staff receive a $4 discount through payroll deduction which will also be assessed pre-tax.

Faculty and staff may enroll in the COTA bus pass payroll deduction program through  Workday . Eligible employees must sign up for this voluntary deduction to participate. COTA bus access will begin the month following the deduction being withheld from the employees paycheck. For example, if the deduction is withdrawn from the March paycheck, COTA bus access will begin April 1.

Please view the  enrollment instructions  that include information on starting and stopping COTA deductions.  Please note: Tax laws do not permit any refund of a pre-tax deduction once deducted.

For questions regarding the COTA pass payroll deduction program, please contact Transportation and Traffic Management at  [email protected] . For questions related to COTA service, please visit  COTA’s website .
