Dubai to Oman – The Epic Musandam Cruise Day Trip

Almost everyone who visits Dubai visits one or more of the neighboring Emirates, but few take the trip from Dubai to Oman. There are several routes to pick from, a popular one being Dubai to Dibba because you can take advantage of the Gulf of Oman and experience some dramatic scenery. If you are visiting Dubai, consider the Dubai to Dibba route.

Getting from Dubai to Oman via Dibba

Let’s start with this is not a trip I recommend solo. Don’t rent a car and head out. In my opinion, renting a car would be a massive mistake . Oman has one of the world’s highest death rates from traffic accidents. And, unless you’ve already got a visa for Oman, you will run into problems.  The logistics alone are a huge reason you need to book a tour of some form to take advantage of this trip.

Map of Dubai and Oman

Dubai to Oman Map

We booked this trip through our hotel concierge, although there are now many day trip options you can pick from . If you try to book this through your hotel, eyebrows will be raised. I felt that sending tourists out of the Emirates and over to Oman to spend money is not exactly a goal for the Dubai tourism industry. I had to insist they book this for us, which is not advertised locally.

If you research this route, you will get mixed opinions and views. Disregard this and go for it. If you’ve made it to Dubai, this day trip is something you will appreciate.  If you’re a thrill-seeker or like to go off the beaten path, this is all you. Or, if you are a collect a country stamp type of person, this is for you.

So, let’s get into the details:

Oman, officially the Sultanate of Oman, is an Arab country that borders The United Arab Emirates, Yemen, and Saudi Arabia. The northern section of the Peninsula Coast separates the mainland and juts into the Strait of Hormuz. This region is separated from the rest of Oman by the United Arab Emirates. Oman is a Muslim country, and the Musandam region is often cited as beautiful as the Norwegian Fjords .

Getting To Oman From Dubai

I assume you read my earlier advice and took it to heart. And that you are going to book a trip through a tour operator. If you don’t, good luck, and let us know how it goes!

The tours start early, and it’s a long day out. You’ll be picked up at around 7:00 am and then make the usual rounds to pick up others joining you once the bus or van is full – off across the desert to the border.

FYI – The tour will also return you to your hotel.

Tours From Dubai to Oman

Crossing the border from dubai to oman.

This might seem odd or funny, but this was one of the highlights for me. It’s a tad shady. First, you’ll stop before the border to inspect your papers. The tour operator on site will scan your passport, check all the details, and give you the equivalent of a day pass, not an actual visa . Ironically, you provide all your information in advance, but it’s rechecked. Not a bad thing. This ensures your ability to cross the border. From there, your bus will proceed into the line at the border.

It’s as you would imagine – sketchy. Oman police are dripping in rifles and an excess of other military weapons, ready for trouble should it occur. Once your buses arrive at the Oman border, an agent boards the bus to check that everyone’s papers are in order. It’s intimidating but exciting! They did not review every passenger’s documents, it was random, but they checked at least half of the passenger’s paperwork. And we had someone on board that was grilled in broken English about his previous travels. The Oman border control found his travels either exciting or suspicious.

We passed through with no issues and went to Dibba port, where the fun began.

Note: You cannot take any photographs while crossing the boarder

Dubai to Oman

Riding the Dhow in Oman

One of the most compelling reasons to take this tour is to ride the Dhow. A dhow is a traditional Arabic boat. The Dhow is the generic name of several traditional ships with one or more masts common to the region.

Don’t get me wrong; you can ride a dhow in Dubai, but let’s be honest – everyone who’s been to Dubai has done this. The boats are the same; however, the landscape is dramatically different. Oman has the most rugged and beautiful coastlines in the world. I’ll add they are also remote and then some.

As soon as the Dhow takes off, you start to see why people compare this landscape to Norway. One difference is the climate, Norway’s cooler, and while the water is piercing clear in Oman, it’s a Caribbean blue.

Imagine yourself relaxing on a fabulous traditional Arabic boat in the middle of nowhere, seeing the mountains of Musandam. Better imagine what this looks like when the sun sets. I caught many pictures with the Dhow in the sun’s background, and cheesy as it might sound, the views are priceless.

Dubai to Oman Sunset

You’ll cruise for an hour or so, and then you will pull into a cove where you will get to explore the beach, the water, and all the other traditions you would expect from a water-based trip.

Activities on the Dhow

Here is what to expect in terms of choices of things to do:

  • Snorkel the beautiful blue water
  • Speed boat blasting
  • Banana boat riding
  • Take the speed board to the limestone (white rock) and tour inside the caves.
  • Sunbathe on the beach, or explore the beach
  • Jump or swing off the Dhow and splash into the water
  • Handline fishing

We opted to explore the beach and admire the vistas; we did the caves, and Brian tried hand-line fishing.

Mussandam Cruise Line Fishing

You get to spend about two hours at the chosen cove, and then it’s time to return to the Dhow. Back on board, you’ll be treated to a traditional lunch that’s buffet style. The food was adequate but not spectacular. Don’t expect to be wowed; it’s not a feast. Add to this that there are people with many worldwide – all with different cultural norms. Creating a line and lining up (or bum-rushing) the line will be a factor. Some people tried to jump in the queue. They were barging in as if there was not enough food for all. This concept’s not new; I’ve experienced it worldwide.  I remind all to get in line, and I’m firm enough to set the tone.

Food in hand, it’s time to lay back on the dhows cushions and take in the sunset. A quiet and calm trip; it’s not a booze cruise you would take in the Caribbean . The low key with almost all people opting for the layout.

What You Need When Visiting Oman

What you need to know about a trip from dubai to oman, visas and day permits.

  • Unless you do a day tour, you need a visa to visit Oman .
  • If you take a tour, you do not need a visa, and you will get a day pass subject to your return on the same day.
  • Before touring, you will have to provide copies of your passport, and you need six months left on the passport to enter.
  • A copy of your passport must be sent 48 hours before the trip to arrange entry.
This is important. You can’t arrange this trip the day before you need to book this at least two days (sometimes three) in advance.

General Tips For Travel From Dubai To Oman

  • Day trips from Dubai start at around $75 and go up to $500. The cost depends on the tour you pick. Essentially, the price is dominated by choosing a shared vs. private tour.
  • Tours provide everything you need except sunscreen, including snorkeling gear, life jackets, water, etc.
  • You can wear a bathing suit on the beach, other than this, be moderate.
  • You do not need currency or cash. Everything you need is provided on the boat.
  • This is a long day, at least ten hours. In our case, it was for twelve hours.
  • Non-alcoholic drinks are included, and you can buy alcohol on most tours.
  • Depending on where you dock, there is a chance the locals will be unimpressed by your arrival. We experienced this, and it was comical. A love-hate relationship was exposed before our eyes, and the locals tried to chase off the tour company.
  • Taking pictures of Arab Women is considered offensive, and before you take a local photograph, you must ask for permission.
Note: Some of the beaches have been littered by tourists. It’s sad to see and it’s the main gripe that people cite following this tour. It’s shocking to be somewhere so remote, barely inhabited and stunning yet dressed in trash. Unfortunately, this is a concept I’ve seen in several countries . If you take this tour, please do not leave any trash behind.

Driving from Dubai to Dibba is approximately an hour and forty-five minutes.

You do not need a visa if you take a day trip. You will need a visa if you do anything other than a same-day return trip.

You can apply for a  visa here.

Yes, some people do speak English, but it’s not universal.

Yes, you can, but it’s not recommended.

A 10-day tourist visa costs five to ten riyals, which is approximately $1.50 – $3.00

Yes, if you book a day trip through a travel agency.

Closing Thoughts

The typical traditional Dubai tourist rarely leaves The Emirates during their stay. This is understandable. The Middle East has a reputation for volatility, which steers many from considering branching out. I will tell you that you will be fine if you use a reputable tour company and have paperwork in order. The tour company will take great care of you and ensure you cross and return without problems.

Most important, you will have experienced something that few do. Lastly, if you get fortunate, you’ll experience the debacle between those living in the mountains, sounding the beaches, and the tour operators.

Hi Lyn. For this specific trip it’s just the cove :) Nikki

Thnx for posting! Would this trip be recommendable for a family with two little (4 and 3) children?

There were no kids on my trip, so I can’t say for sure, but I don’t see any reason (other than the border crossing) why kids could not take the trip. Nikki

Such a nice post. This is really a trip I would make. Oman is a country, I’m dying to visit. And I’m always fascinated by border crossings. MUSANDAM – A FUN DAY TRIP FROM DUBAI TO OMAN

Musandam – dubai day trip to oman.

It took me four visits to Dubai before I finally reserved a full day to see Oman. Okay, I just got a tiny glimpse of the northern part of Oman, but it honestly is one of the top day trips from Dubai. That is why I added it to my “50 top things to do in Dubai” list .

In this post, you will find out what to expect if you book a trip to Oman and Musandam for a day.

The Musandam Peninsula is located in the northern part of Oman, about 200 kilometers from Dubai. On your way, you will also cross Ras Al-Khaimah, which is also a perfect base for taking a day trip to Oman.

DAY TRIP FROM DUBAI TO OMAN / MUSANDAM

There are different Musandam tour packages from Dubai, and it really depends on what you are interested to see and how much you like to spend. I will add a few different tours later for you.

musandam oman from dubai

Why Visit the Musandam Peninsula?

The Musandam Peninsula is a beautiful place in Oman – very authentic and full of history, especially when compared to the hustle, bustle, and general glitziness of Dubai.

Getting there takes a while, but you will be rewarded with boat trips, lovely scenery, and incredible views of the stark limestone mountains.

However, although Musandam is getting more popular these days and attracts many tourists from Ras Al-Khaimah and Dubai, it still retains its originality and natural feeling despite having a touristy touch to it.

To start your Musandam tour from Dubai, you can either a) travel by car to Khasab, which is about a three-hour drive from Dubai, or b) do a guided tour  (like I did), and then you will be picked up from the hotel.

A guided tour to Oman from Dubai is probably the easiest way. You could also fly from Dubai to Khasab if you prefer, but I actually recommend getting there by bus.

You can stay there, overnight as well: I personally think a day trip is enough, but if you can decide to stay longer you can book your accommodation in Oman.

Arzo Travels in Oman

What to Know

We were picked up from our hotel by the tour company, and after picking up some other people, we drove for about three hours to get to the border of Oman .

From there, it took about an hour to get through border security to where our dhow waited for us in Khasab, a village just beyond the border.

Packing List Musandam

If you have a visa for the UAE, you shouldn’t need an extra visa for Oman, but you definitely have to bring your original passport with you and take a copy of your passport.

It wasn’t needed for us, but it was recommended by our tour guide.

To make the most of your Oman trip from Dubai, it’s also important to take everything you’ll need with you: swimming gear, sun lotion, etc., and of course your camera.

Dhow Cruise from Khasab

We did a Musandam dhow cruise from Khasab. The dhows are the original Arabic boats which are decorated with adorable Arabic cushions and rugs.

Click here to find the tour we did.

Dubai Musandam tour packages

You can choose to sit on the top of the dhow or the ground level, and then you start your trip!

Food and drink are often included , it does depend on the tour operator, but most tour operators have similar offers.

Ours included fresh fruit, water, juices, tea, and coffee all day long. Then for lunch, there was a small buffet, and soft drinks were served. It was nothing exciting and all quite simple, but it was definitely enough for the day.

Khasab tours from Dubai

If you are looking for something completely tranquil, then tours like this might not be the perfect choice for you as there is often music on the boat, which I personally enjoyed. When I went, it was a mixture of international, Indian, and US music.

We sailed for about thirty minutes traveling past the mountains and what they call the fjords (although they aren’t officially fjords). Once at the beach, we had the option to hop into the water or to take a small boat to get us right up to the beach.

I really enjoyed my full-day trip to Oman but to be honest, I was a little bit disappointed by the water. If you visit Oman to see the pristine clear water you see in the pictures sometimes, you will be disappointed.

The water was not very clear, it was oily, and the area smelled like oil, so bear this in mind before you go.

Activities in Musandam

Musandam tour operators in Dubai

The beach, although nice, was a little bit dirty. Sadly, there was trash lying around where people had just thrown rubbish on the beach. Of course it is the fault of the tourists, but it would have been better if there had been a big rubbish bin.

Guys, seriously- take your trash back to the boat if you do not see a rubbish bin. No rubbish bin is no excuse for being a stupid tourist.

We had about an hour at the beach/boat, and there were options to do banana boat riding (which was included in the price) or a speedboat trip which was really enjoyable, although it was a short ride of fewer than five minutes.

Banana Boat Riding in Musandam Activities in Oman

No trip would be perfect without food – and so these tours also include a buffet and more music, and it was an enjoyable atmosphere with around thirty other people on the boat. The buffet simple, some rice, noodles, salads, and a few more things (including meat) but okay for that day.

Khasab tours Dubai

Musandam Scenery

In total, we spent about five hours there, and then we sailed back, again through the “fjords” – it was kind of really beautiful with the fog and the mountains, and then we headed back to the border.

Oman Trip from Dubai

Just before that, some people had the chance to go fishing from the boat.

Best Musandam tours from Dubai

Finally, we headed back to the bus and through the border, which took another hour, and after that, we were heading back to Dubai.

Is it worth visiting Musandam from Dubai?

In total, the day trip took us about 14 hours, around six and a half of it on the bus, which was a lot longer than I expected.

So, if you know that and you don’t expect the crystal clear perfect water, then a Dubai to Oman day trip is perfect.

The prices are reasonable when you consider that there is food and drink included, and you will not find anything like this in Dubai for that price.

Day trips to Oman

Oman’s capital city, Muscat has transformed over the past decades but still retains a pleasantly relaxed atmosphere, as well as many reminders of its long and cosmopolitan history. The city carries its charm compared to other Arabian countries because of its unique culture and heritage. In this blog, we will let you know of the best day trips to Oman from Dubai and the details you would need to know.

In case you wish to drive to Muscat from Dubai or Abu Dhabi or take a day trip to the fascinating Arabian city of Muscat, here are the details you would have to keep in mind.

day trip to oman from dubai

What is the distance from Dubai and Abu Dhabi to Muscat by car and by flight?

Muscat is at a driveable distance from Abu Dhabi and Dubai, it takes about 5-6 hours from Abu Dhabi and Dubai to cover 500km. The air travel (bird fly) shortest distance between Oman and Dubai is 414 km and takes 1 hour and 10 mins. You would also need to consider the time to check in at the airport. Dubai operates daily flights from the Dubai International Airport to Muscat.

What documents do you need to enter Oman by Car from UAE?

Since you will be crossing the international border of UAE to enter Oman, you will need:

  • A valid passport (with 6 months validity)
  • Payment in AED for the exit tax from the UAE
  • Visa and fee to enter Oman (AED or Omani Royal)

If you are driving by your own car, you would additionally need:

  • Proof of ownership of the vehicle (or proof that you have permission to drive the vehicle if the owner is not present in the car)
  • Insurance that covers your vehicle in both the UAE & Oman

Where can you cross the border to enter Oman?

Ignoring Musandam and other enclaves, the main border crossings open to all tourists and non-GCC citizens from Dubai are:

Wadi Hatta – Al Wajajah – closest to Dubai & Sharjah. Note the E44 Hatta route is not an option for tourists, program Hatta Fort Hotel in your GPS/Google Maps/Waze for the most accurate route.

Kathm al Shukhla, Al Ain – note the Oman crossing is in Buraimi, some further 30km away! As this is a popular truck route option, it can be the quieter, easy route for cars.

Meyzad – Hafeet, Al Ain – closer crossing for Abu Dhabi residents and if returning from Nizwa / Jabal Shams direction.

Below are the day tours that you can take from Dubai to Oman:

  • Day Trip to Musandam and Dibba Port

Day trip to Musandam is a wonderful way to visit pristine natural beauty of Oman. Musandam has an unspoilt landscape with stunning views and water. Oman’s pristine natural beauty.

Dibba is a coastal town in Musandam, Oman and is home to some natural scenic beauty. Musandam is surrounded by sea on one side and the UAE on the other side. It takes about two and a half hours to drive from Dubai to Musandam through Ras al Khaimah, to get to Dibba. You don’t need to get your passports stamped if you are visiting Dibba from Dubai. The drive doesn’t feel long because you see a great view that adorns the route.

The Dibba fort, built during the time of the Portuguese still stands in Dibba. The landscape of Dibba is for those who love nature. This place is full of natural waters and fjords suitable for fun activities like snorkelling, hand line fishing, and swimming. A dhow cruise is essential to enjoy these emerald waters. Giant sea turtles are often seen on Hafa beach as they come out of water in the evenings to lay eggs in the sand.

In order to make the most of your Oman trip from Dubai, it’s also important to take everything you’ll need with you: swimming gear, sun lotion etc. and of course your camera.

Dibba is a wonder for the fact that such a place exists so close to the arid deserts of Dubai. It is a perfect weekend getaway for UAE residents because of its proximity and ease of access. You can go there driving or through a tour company.

We would recommend you take the Oman Khasab Tour , priced at AED 275 per person and is a highly reviewed tour or Dubai: Full-Day Sea Safari to Musandam .

  • Go for a Cruise

Oman is reachable from Dubai by air and road, but if you’re looking for luxury and adventure, our favourite way to get there is via sea.

MSC Cruises

MSC Cruises is a family-owned company that has been operating for 45 years. They have a proud Mediterranean heritage and offer many cruises in that region. They bring this Mediterranean warmth to their Middle Eastern cruise as well. The stops on this 7-day cruise include Abu Dhabi, UAE; Sir Bani Yas Island, UAE; Muscat, Oman; Khasab, Oman and Dubai, UAE.

The cruise takes place on the MSC Splendida, a 138,000 tons ship that can welcome over 4000 passengers. In keeping with the UAE’s focus on clean energy, the ship boasts a variety of environmentally friendly technologies. The ship also promises great entertainment, with live music, a disco, a casino and a theatre.  If you’d prefer a more tranquil way to unwind, there is a relaxing spa offering massages, a sauna, a Turkish bath and the latest in advanced beauty treatments. The food is fantastic, ranging from authentic Mediterranean to trendy Tex-Mex. And to burn off the calories, you can make use of the state-of-the-art gym. The squash court or one of the four swimming pools can also be used by guests.

Costa Cruise

Costa Cruises is an Italian cruise line that offers a 7-day cruise with stops in the UAE and in Oman. This cruise is particularly noted for its excellent dining options, as the various restaurants pay homage to the company’s parent company of Italy. Whether it’s fine dining or a pizzeria, you can enjoy world-class cuisine from chef Bruno Barbieri, who boasts 7 stars to his name.

Costa Cruises is great for anyone who worries about possibly getting bored upon the ship. If you’re a sports fanatic, there are various sports pitches that allow for team sports. Day Trip to Sohar

Suhar or Sohar is the capital and largest city of the Al Batinah North Governorate in Oman. An ancient capital of the country that once served as an important Islamic port town, Suhar has also been credited as the mythical birthplace of Sinbad the Sailor. You can easily take a day trip to Sohar from Dubai. Should you wish to drive, it will take you about 3 hours from Dubai to Sohar or alternatively you can take the bus. If you are heading to Oman for a day trip or a weekend getaway, you can also visit the Sohar town along with Muscat.

There is plenty to see and do in Sohar- the handicrafts markets, the fort and much more. If you are traveling to Oman, then you must experience shopping at the Sohar Handicraft Souq. You can find this in the region of Al Hajra. The Sohar Fort is one of the most exquisite historic landmarks in Oman where you get to truly understand the life of soldiers in the early 14th century. There is a museum inside so tourists can get a glimpse of the local life in Oman. You can also find a tunnel inside the tower, which was used as an escape route at times of a siege. Camel racing competitions have become a crucial part of the local life of Oman and when in Sohar, make sure to keep an eye on the camel racing events happening.

With proximity to Dubai, and an easy visa process, we are sure you include a day trip to Sohar in your travel list!

Discovering Muscat & Oman from Dubai (UAE)

A weekend tour (2 nights).

Nestled just beyond the dunes of Dubai lies a world of rugged mountains, pristine wadis, and enchanting landscapes waiting to be explored. Oman, with its rich tapestry of natural wonders, offers the perfect getaway from the bustling city life of Dubai. Join us as we craft a delightful weekend itinerary that includes a full-day adventure through the mesmerizing Snake Canyon.

Day 1: Start of Oman Weekend Tour (2 nights) – Dubai to Muscat

Morning  Begin your trip to Oman with the rising sun as you depart from Dubai to Muscat. The 4-5 hour scenic drive sets the tone for an exciting weekend ahead. Ensure your passports and any necessary visas are in order, and embrace the changing scenery as you cross the border into Oman. Alternatively, you can also start your Oman tour by flying to Muscat.

Afternoon  As you arrive in Muscat, the capital city welcomes you with open arms. Begin your city tour with a cultural immersion at the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, a marvel of Islamic architecture. The sheer grandeur of the mosque and its intricate details offer a glimpse into Oman’s rich heritage.

Next, wander through the Mutrah Souq, a bustling market where the fragrance of exotic spices mingles with the colors of traditional Omani crafts. Allow yourself to get lost in the narrow alleys, discovering everything from vibrant textiles to intricately designed jewelry.

Evening  As the day progresses, head to Mutrah Corniche for a leisurely evening stroll along the waterfront. The panoramic views of the harbor and the Portuguese forts of Al Jalali and Al Mirani create a serene atmosphere, especially as the sun begins its descent, casting warm hues over the city.

Choose from a range of accommodations in Muscat city to unwind, each offering its unique blend of Omani hospitality and modern comfort. Whether it’s a luxurious hotel or a cozy boutique guesthouse, let the first day of your weekend escape be a prelude to the adventures and Arabian nights that lie ahead.

Day 2: Muscat to Snake Canyon – An Adventurous Day Trip

Morning  Rise early for an exhilarating day trip from Muscat to Snake Canyon (also called Wadi Bimmah), nestled in the heart of Oman’s Al Hajar Mountains. The scenic 2-3 hour drive unveils the rugged beauty of the mountainous terrain, a stark contrast to the desert landscapes of Dubai. Upon reaching Snake Canyon, the stage is set for a day of canyoning adventure. Enlist the services of experienced guides who provide essential safety briefings and equip you for the day’s thrilling excursion. The canyon awaits, promising an adrenaline-pumping experience amidst towering cliffs and crystal-clear pools. If you’re looking for a little less thrill, you can make a trip to Wadi Shab & Wadi Tiwi on this day instead.

Venture into the heart of Snake Canyon, where each step brings you closer to nature’s architectural marvels. Navigate through narrow passages, conquer natural rock obstacles, and take the plunge into refreshing pools. The blend of excitement and natural beauty makes Snake Canyon a must-visit for adventure enthusiasts.

As midday approaches, find a picturesque spot within the canyon for a well-deserved picnic lunch. Surrounded by the stunning landscapes of Snake Canyon, recharge your energy for the afternoon session of canyoning.

Afternoon  With renewed vigor, resume your canyoning journey, exploring deeper into the canyon’s hidden corners. Marvel at unique rock formations shaped by the forces of nature, and relish the sense of accomplishment with each conquered section of the canyon.

As the sun begins its descent, casting shadows over the canyon walls, the play of light adds a touch of magic to the adventure. Capture these moments, and let the natural beauty of Snake Canyon leave an indelible mark on your memory.

Evening  As evening approaches, embark on the journey back to Muscat, reliving the day’s adventures. The scenic drive provides a contemplative space to reflect on the thrill of conquering Snake Canyon.

Back in Muscat, celebrate your conquest with a delightful dinner at one of the city’s renowned restaurants. Whether you choose traditional Omani cuisine or international fare, let the evening be a time of relaxation and recounting the day’s adrenaline-fueled escapade.

Day 3: Muscat Exploration and Departure to UAE

Morning  Spend your final morning exploring the historical treasures of Muscat’s Old Town. Visit the Al Jalali and Al Mirani forts, perched high above the city, offering panoramic views of the Gulf of Oman. Delve into the rich history encapsulated within these ancient structures, a testament to Oman’s enduring past.

Continue your cultural exploration with a visit to the Royal Opera House Muscat. Marvel at the stunning architecture and, if time allows, catch a performance or simply enjoy a guided tour of this cultural landmark. The Royal Opera House reflects Oman’s commitment to the arts, blending tradition with modernity. In case you’re planning to travel back late, a visit to Nizwa could be an option. Here, rich culture, traditional mud houses and Nizwa fort with its diverse watchtowers await you.

Afternoon  Head to Riyam Park in the afternoon, where you can capture breathtaking views of Muscat and the Corniche. The park provides a serene setting for reflection, allowing you to absorb the cultural and natural beauty that defines Oman. Spend a leisurely afternoon in this tranquil oasis before bidding farewell to the city.

Oman announces Eid Al Fitr 2024 holiday for public and private sectors

Oman sets work resumption for April 14 following celebrations

Stock Oman Muscat skyline

Dubai: Oman has officially announced the Eid Al Fitr holiday dates for both the public and private sectors. Celebrations are set to begin on Tuesday, Ramadan 29, 1445 AH, falling on April 9, 2024, and will extend until Saturday, April 13, 2024.

Work will resume on Sunday, April 14, 2024, adhering to Oman’s Sunday to Thursday workweek.

According to the Ministry of Labour, employers could arrange for employees to work during this holiday period if necessary, provided that they offer suitable compensation for the holiday work.

Astronomical data suggest a high probability that Eid Al Fitr will be observed on Wednesday, April 10, 2024, according to Abdulwahab al Busaidy, Head of the Observatory at the Oman Astronomical Society.

This prediction, based on the expected visibility of the crescent moon shortly after sunset on April 9, is consistent with observations and expectations in neighbouring and other Islamic countries. Al Busaidy expected that most Muslim countries would mark Eid Al Fitr on April 10.

It's a four hour drive. I probably wouldn't do it as a day trip, especially with the kids.

If you want to see a little bit of Oman then a day trip to Hatta goes through part of the Al Hajar mountains. This is a good trip to do and usually includes a visit to the old fort and lunch at the Hatta Fort hotel.

I had thought about visiting Hatta but I understand that the Hatta Rock Pools are very vandalised so that put me off...

Don't think it's so much a case of vandalism - more a case of litter being left behind by visitors to the Hatta Pools, unfortunately.

As Latimer has said, it's a good 4hr (or at least 400k) drive each way to Muscat. And then you have to add in the time for border formalities at Hatta which can take an hour or more.

IMO, a day trip to Muscat isn't feasible. However a day trip to Al Buraimi or even Al Ain (which is Abu Dhabi and very different to Dubai but doesn't require you to go through border requirements) could be do-able.

Thank you - I will look into the places that you suggest? Is there reliable public transport?

See from Latimer's post that you are a family - how many are you (Latti is much better than us at checking out previous posts for more info)? Are you thinking of Al Ain? Apparently the zoo there is worth a visit (this is just one site we found: http://www.planetware.com/al-ain/al-ain-zoo-and-aquarium-uae-abu-alzoo.htm

and also a drive up Jebel Hafeet where you could have lunch at the Mercure - http://www.mercure.com/gb/hotel-3573-mercure-grand-jebel-hafeet-al-ain/index.shtml

Have fun ...

My children are not so small anymore and are 12 and 14 years.

They like an adventure mixed with a bit of culture! (If possible...)

I know they had a great trip overall but this is what they did on a day trip out to Hatta.

*****************************************************

The next day was our desert trip, and I was really grateful for your advice. If you remember, I had originally planned to go all the way over to the east coast at Dibba, but you were right – it would have been too much.

As it turned out, we probably had the best day of the whole holiday (and that’s saying a lot!). I arranged a PRIVATE excursion with Orient Tours in a Toyota Land Cruiser, and we had a really good driver who would basically go wherever we wanted.

We drove out through the desert and stopped at Big Red (no-one in the family could believe the heat when we got out of the car !). As we drove on, I think we were all just fascinated by the local people, and the settlements by the roadside. We then went on to Hatta, and found the Heritage Village interesting.

Having originally decided NOT to go to Hatta Pools our driver persuaded us that we should do it. When we got to the pools there wasn’t another soul there (apparently there are two sets of pools – we went to the less accessible ones).

We all swam and really loved it. We also enjoyed driving on through the mountains in Oman, and (at my request when we booked) we were taken to an oasis. We had a picnic under the palms, and the farmer showed off his goats and various fruit trees!

Again, nobody else was there. We moved on through the dunes (with some gentle “bashing”!) to Camel Rock. There were sandstorms blowing up, and camels kept crossing the road. I have to say that the scenery at Camel Rock (and looking over towards Fossil Rock) was stunning, and yet again we were completely alone.

The only slight annoyance was the litter – what sort of person leaves plastic bags in a place like that ? Finally, we bashed on over miles of dunes and went on to their touristy “camp” in the desert, which I had arranged as a bit of a treat for my wife & the boys – they all rode camels, did some sandboarding, had henna designs etc. and the BBQ meal was fine. Sunset in the desert, after such a brilliant day. The private arrangement cost us about £240, including lunch and dinner, which was a lot to spend on a day out but well worth it.

Another time we drove up to the straits of Hormuz. Once out of UAE the coastline was amazing to drive around. Not much settlement there but an easy day trip from Dubai.

Thank you all SO much for your help - all the trips sound very interesting and enjoyable - I will research all your recommedations.....

Shame about the litter at the pools. We have the same problem here - we have miles of stunning sandy beaches but people leave all their rubbish behind. Some people really don't appreciate natural beauty.

Israel says Iran launched more than 300 drones and missiles, 99% of which were intercepted

JERUSALEM — Booms and air raid sirens sounded across Israel early Sunday after Iran launched hundreds of drones, ballistic missiles and cruise missiles in an unprecedented revenge mission that pushed the Middle East closer to a regionwide war. A military spokesman said the launches numbered more than 300 but 99% of them were intercepted.

Calling the outcome “a very significant strategic success,” Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari said Iran fired 170 drones, more than 30 cruise missiles and more than 120 ballistic missiles. Of those, several ballistic missiles reached Israeli territory, causing minor damage to an air base.

Rescuers said a 7-year-old girl in a Bedouin Arab town was seriously wounded in southern Israel, apparently in a missile strike, though they said police were still investigating the circumstances of her injuries.

In Washington, President Joe Biden said U.S. forces helped Israel down “nearly all” the drones and missiles and pledged to convene allies to develop a unified response.

The Iranian attack, less than two weeks after a suspected Israeli strike in Syria that killed two Iranian generals in an Iranian consular building, marked the first time Iran has launched a direct military assault on Israel, despite decades of enmity dating back to the country’s 1979 Islamic Revolution.

Condemnation from the United Nations chief and others was swift, with France saying Iran “is risking a potential military escalation,” Britain calling the attack “reckless” and Germany saying Iran and its proxies “must stop it immediately.”

Hagari said the vast majority of the intercepts came outside Israel’s borders, including 10 cruise missiles that were intercepted by warplanes.

“A wide-scale attack by Iran is a major escalation,” he said. Asked whether Israel would respond, Hagari said only that the army “does and will do whatever is required to protect the security of the state of Israel.” He said the incident was not over, and dozens of Israeli warplanes remained in the skies.

Israel’s military said its Arrow system, which shoots down ballistic missiles outside the atmosphere, handled most interceptions and noted that “strategic partners” were involved.

“At my direction, to support the defense of Israel, the U.S. military moved aircraft and ballistic missile defense destroyers to the region over the course of the past week,” Biden said in a statement. “Thanks to these deployments and the extraordinary skill of our service members, we helped Israel take down nearly all of the incoming drones and missiles.”

U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said in a separate statement that U.S. forces “intercepted dozens of missiles and UAVs en route to Israel, launched from Iran, Iraq, Syria and Yemen.”

Biden and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke early Sunday, Israeli time, their governments said. Biden said in his statement that he reaffirmed “America’s ironclad commitment” to Israel’s security — a departure from his growing criticism of Israel’s conduct in its war on Hamas in Gaza.

Iran had vowed revenge since the April 1 airstrike in Syria , which Tehran accused Israel of being responsible for. Israel hasn’t commented on it.

Israel and Iran have been on a collision course throughout Israel’s six-month war against Hamas militants in Gaza. The war erupted after Hamas and Islamic Jihad, two militant groups backed by Iran, carried out a devastating cross-border attack on Oct. 7 that killed 1,200 people in Israel and kidnapped 250 others. An Israeli offensive in Gaza has caused widespread devastation and killed over 33,000 people, according to local health officials.

Almost immediately after the war erupted, Hezbollah, an Iranian-backed militant group in Lebanon, began attacking Israel’s northern border. The two sides have been involved in daily exchanges of fire, while Iranian-backed groups in Iraq, Syria and Yemen have launched rockets and missiles toward Israel.

In a statement carried late Saturday by Iran’s state-run IRNA news agency, the country’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard acknowledged launching “dozens of drones and missiles towards the occupied territories and positions of the Zionist regime.”

In a later statement, the Revolutionary Guard issued a direct warning to the U.S.: “The terrorist U.S. government is warned any support or participation in harming Iran’s interests will be followed by decisive and regretting response by Iran’s armed forces.”

IRNA also quoted an anonymous official saying ballistic missiles were part of the attack. A ballistic missile moves on an arch trajectory, heading up into space before gravity brings the weapon down at a speed several times faster than the speed of sound.

Israel has a multilayered air-defense network that includes systems capable of intercepting a variety of threats including long-range missiles, cruise missiles, drones and short-range rockets. However, in a massive attack involving multiple drones and missiles, the likelihood of a strike making it through is higher.

Iran has a vast arsenal of drones and missiles. Online videos shared by Iranian state television purported to show delta-wing-style drones resembling the Iranian Shahed-136s long used by Russia in its war on Ukraine. The slow-flying drones carry bombs. Ukraine has successfully used both surface-to-air missiles and ground fire to target them.

Some Israelis watched the interceptions light up the night sky.

Air raid sirens were reported in numerous places including northern Israel, southern Israel, the northern West Bank and the Dead Sea near the Jordanian border.

Israel’s army ordered residents in the Golan Heights — near the Syrian and Lebanese borders — as well as the southern towns of Nevatim and Dimona and the Red Sea resort of Eilat into protective spaces. Dimona is home to Israel’s main nuclear facility, and Nevatim has a major air base. Loud booms were heard in Jerusalem and northern and southern Israel.

The army’s Home Front Command canceled school Sunday and limited public gatherings to no more than 1,000 people. Israel and some other countries in the region closed their airspace.

Earlier, Netanyahu warned: “Whoever harms us, we will harm them.”

In Washington, Biden convened a principals meeting of the National Security Council to discuss the attack.

Gen. Erik Kurilla, the head of the U.S. military’s Central Command, was in Israel over the weekend consulting with Israeli defense officials. The Central Command oversees U.S. forces in the Middle East.

Iran’s mission to the United Nations issued a warning to both Israel and the U.S. “Should the Israeli regime make another mistake, Iran’s response will be considerably more severe,” it wrote online. “It is a conflict between Iran and the rogue Israeli regime, from which the U.S. MUST STAY AWAY!”

For days, Iranian officials including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei had threatened to “slap” Israel for the Syria strike.

In Iran’s capital, Tehran, witnesses saw long lines at gas stations early Sunday as people appeared worried about what may come next. Dozens of hard-liners demonstrated in support of the attack at Palestine Square.

Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency reported heavy Israeli airstrikes and shelling on multiple locations in south Lebanon following Iran’s launch of drones. The Lebanese militant group Hezbollah said it launched “dozens” of Katyusha rockets at an Israeli military site in the Golan Heights early Sunday. It was not immediately clear if there was any damage.

Iranian missiles or drones were intercepted in the sky above the Jordanian capital, Amman. In Lebanon’s capital, Beirut, and elsewhere in the country, residents reported seeing missiles in the sky and hearing explosions, likely from interceptions. In Syria, explosions were heard in the capital, Damascus, and elsewhere. Britain-based war monitor the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that Syrian air defenses tried to shoot down Israeli attempts to intercept Iranian missiles.

Gambrell reported from Dubai, United Arab Emirates. AP correspondents Nasser Karimi in Tehran, Iran, Michael Balsamo in New York, Krutika Pathi in New Delhi, Stephen Graham in Berlin, Thomas Adamson in Paris, and Zeke Miller and Lolita C. Baldor in Washington contributed to this report.

When is Eid al-Fitr 2024 and how is it celebrated?

The three-day festival celebrates the completion of the fasting month of Ramadan by Muslims across the world.

Interactive_Eid_2024_outside image

As a new moon was not sighted on Monday evening after Maghrib prayers, Muslims in Saudi Arabia and neighbouring countries will fast one more day, completing 30 days of Ramadan. The first day of Eid will then be celebrated on Wednesday, April 10.

The first day of Eid al-Fitr is determined by the sighting of the crescent moon marking the start of the month of Shawwal, the 10th month of the Islamic (Hijri) calendar.

Lunar months last between 29 and 30 days so Muslims usually have to wait until the night before Eid to verify its date.

Other countries follow independent sightings.

When the sighting has been verified, Eid is declared on television, radio stations and at mosques.

How do Muslims celebrate Eid?

Traditionally, Eid is celebrated for three days as an official holiday in Muslim-majority countries. However, the number of holiday days varies by country.

Muslims begin Eid day celebrations by partaking in a prayer service that takes place shortly after dawn, followed by a short sermon.

On their way to the prayer, which is traditionally held in an open area, Muslims recite takbeerat, praising God by saying “Allahu Akbar”, meaning “God is great”.

It is customary to eat something sweet before the prayer, such as date -filled biscuits known as maamoul in the Middle East. This particular festival is known as the “sweet” Eid – and the distribution of sweets is common across the Muslim world.

Muslims usually spend the day visiting relatives and neighbours and accepting sweets as they move around from house to house.

Each country has traditional desserts and sweets that are prepared before Eid or on the morning of the first day.

For some 2.3 million Palestinians in Gaza this Eid, this will be the first Muslim religious holiday after more than 33,000 people have been killed in Israeli attacks. With little food aid, and very limited water, Gaza’s Eid al-Fitr will be mired in destruction amid the continuing attacks.
