When to Travel to Greece

Many people associate Greece with being a summer travel destination. However, the country is a wonderful year-round destination. The best time for you to travel will vary depending on your specific interests.

Spring (March to May)

Spring and Autumn are the shoulder seasons for travelling in Greece. The temperatures are warm and pleasant. They typically range between 25 and 30 degrees Celsius during this time.

Weather conditions in Spring are perfect for hiking in Greece . Travelling to Greek cities at this time gives you the chance to experience their historical and archaeological highlights without the crowds.

Summer (June to August)

Summer in Greece is swelteringly hot. Temperatures often soar as high as 35-40 degrees Celsius in July and August.

The conditions may be perfect for Greek island hopping and lazing on paradisical beaches. However, hiking and extended outdoor exploration can be unbearable in the heat and humidity.

Most people tend to plan their Greece vacations for July and August. Consequently, everywhere is more crowded and you should try and reserve your hotels, tours, and ferry tickets in advance where you can.

Autumn (September to November)

Conditions in Greece in Autumn are similar to the Spring months. Temperatures linger around the late twenties (in terms of degrees Celsius) and the humidity subsides.

Shops, restaurants, and businesses around many of the islands close for the season at the end of September. However, in many places, the waters remain pleasant enough for swimming well into October .

Winter (December to February)

Winters in Greece can become bitter cold. Snow is not unheard of in Central and Northern Greece , and boats from the islands to the mainland run at a much more limited schedule. You can expect temperatures of 10 degrees and below if you are visiting Athens in winter .

Greece Travel Itinerary Budget

Greece Itinerary

Beautiful Greece is generally a very affordable country to travel in. However, establishing an appropriate budget for your trip depends on where you are travelling to.

For example, Santorini and Mykonos are quite pricey. Conversely, Athens and mainland Greece typically do not break the bank.

Opting to travel outside the peak summer months will save you some money. Prices skyrocket during July and August. Come September, you will find that they have dropped by more than 50%.

Getting Around Greece

dream travel greece

Public transport in Greece is both affordable and reliable . It is also possible to rent a car . Driving in Greece is not as daunting as you may imagine.

Renting a Car in Greece

Opting to embark on your 10 day Greece itinerary with your own transport gives you a lot more freedom and flexibility. There are many charming villages, towns, and monasteries around the country that are tricky to get to unless you have a car.

Anyone between the ages of 21 and 70 can rent a car in Greece. Driving in Greece is not as intimidating as it may sound.

If you are an EU citizen, you must present an EU license. Non EU citizens need to display both their driving license and an International Driving Permit.

Various reputable rental companies operate in Greece. Sixt, Avis, and Hertz have branches across the country. Most offer pickup from major Greek airports.

Explore Greece by Rail

Greece’s rail network is not extensive. The main routes connect Athens to Thessaloniki , Kalambaka, and Patra. Some major cities (e.g. Ioannina ) are not serviced by rail at all.

OSE is the Greek rail network that manages the national trains. You can purchase tickets online, or in person at the train station.

Major renovation efforts have taken place in recent years to improve the service offering of Greek trains. Most services are clean, comfortable, fast, and efficient.

Explore Greece by Bus

KTEL buses are an intercity bus network that connects most major towns and cities in Greece. Small, regional operators service the routes to smaller villages.

KTEL buses are modern and comfortable. However, confusingly, there is not one centralised website to book tickets and review timetables from.

Instead, each region has its own KTEL website. For instance, KTEL Attikis services the Athens region.

Meanwhile, KTEL Chalkidikis services Halkidiki , and KTEL Macedonia covers Thessaloniki. If in doubt, your hotel can advise you where to search for tickets.

Ferries in Greece and the Islands

There are more than 6,000 Greek islands, split across several different Greek island groups . Only a small handful of Greek islands like Naxos and Paros have their own airports. . If you want to go island hopping in Greece, it typically makes sense to fly into Athens first for the Cyclades, the Dodecanese, and the Saronic islands. If you are going to be visiting the Ionian, you can fly into Corfu .

Skiathos island is serviced by a lot of European charter flights for travel to the Sporades during the summer months. You will need to depart from different ports and use different ferry operators depending on which area you are travelling to.

Most boats bound for the Saronic islands and the Cyclades depart from Athens’ Piraeus port. Sporades-bound boats depart from Agios Konstantinos and Volos ports.

Meanwhile, Igoumenitsa is the main departure point for Kerkyra and the Ionian. You can use ferryscanner to check routes and fares for ferries in Greece.

Greece Itineraries for Every Travel Style

Kerkyra Old Town

Two different Greece itineraries have been drafted below which offer something to suit everyone.

Each proposed Greece itinerary lasts 10 days. However, you have the option to chop and change as you see fit.

  • Greece for Culture Vultures (Athens, Meteora, Delphi, Thessaloniki)
  • Athens & the Cyclades (Athens, Santorini, Koufonisia, Mykonos)

10 Day Greece Itinerary: Greece for Culture Vultures

Greece Itinerary: Syntagma, Athens

Best time to travel: Autumn and Spring

Greece has plenty to offer those with an interest in world cultures and history. Indeed, this gorgeous Mediterranean country is widely regarded as being the birthplace of civilisation. The cities and settlements here are among the oldest in the world.

In Athens, travellers can walk in the footsteps of Socrates and Aristotle as they meander through the Ancient Agora , and past the sunbleached ruins of temples and shrines that are thousands of years old.

Days One to Four: Athens

It makes sense to start your Greece itinerary in Athens. After all, the country’s main international airport is situated here, making the city a convenient entrypoint for most visitors.

Despite being far from being one of the most beautiful cities in Europe, Athens is rich in ancient sites. However, it certainly has its charm.

Behind the gritty outer exterior, Athens boasts a plethora of quirky neighbourhoods, cute tavernas, and quirky coffee shops. You just have to know where to look.

The Greek capital is teeming with history. Its ramshackle streets date back over 5000 years. This makes it one of the oldest cities in the world.

Things to do in Athens

Greece Itinerary: The view from the top of Mount Lycabettus, Athens

I’ve spent the last three and a half years living here in Athens. This Athens itinerary helps you cross off all of the most important sites in the city. Additionally, it enables you to beneath the surface and explore some of the more “ off the beaten path” areas.

Some of Athens’ main highlights are summarised below.

Athens Highlights

  • Admire the Cycladic architecture of Anafiotika
  • Visit the Acropolis
  • Do a victory lap around the Panathenaic stadium
  • Hike to the top of Lycabettus hill
  • Sip tsipouo and ouzo in the tavernas of Plaka
  • Venture off the beaten path

Get a Sampler of Island Life in Anafiotika

Greece Itinerary

Anafiotika is one of the most charming spots in Athens. The best part? Very few people actually know about it.

Anafiotika is a charming little village whose houses are decorated in quintessential Greek island style. Envisage quaint whitewashed structures with blue roofs. The neighbourhood cascades down the slopes of Acropolis hill.

To get to Anafiotika, you can follow an unsuspecting path that leads upwards from Plaka. The area was created in the 18th century by residents of the Greek island Anafi who relocated to Athens.

They designed their houses in a style reminiscent of their island homes. As such, the architectural style here is more reminiscent of the Cyclades than what you may expect to see in the Greek capital.

Be a Tourist at the Acropolis

The Acropolis is visible from virtually all corners of Athens . It sits perched precariously atop a craggy, rocky hilltop from where it watches protectively over the city.

This is one of the most important historical monuments in Greece and the western world. Indeed, the Acropolis was almost designated as being one of the “new” seven wonders of the world.

The shimmering marble structure of the Parthenon is a magnificent remnant of the grand city of Pericles that was constructed at the site thousands of years ago. The site is more expansive than many realise.

The Parthenon may be the Acropolis’ “piece de resistance”. However, there are also numerous other important buildings in the area that should not be missed.

This includes the Temple of Athena Nike, the sanctuaries of Pandroseion and Erechtheion, and the well-preserved Herodes Atticus Roman Amphitheatre. Admission to the Acropolis also includes entry to the worthwhile Acropolis museum.

You should dedicate at least a couple of hours to exploring the ruins and the exhibitions. It is advisable to purchase your tickets online in advance, to save time queuing on arrival.

Do a Victory Lap at the Panathenaic Stadium

Athens’ Panathenaic Stadium (Kallimarmaro) is the world’s only marble stadium. Dating way back to 566 BC, it was renovated in the 18th century. Later it became the location of the first modern Olympic games.

Today, musical and sporting events are often hosted at the Panathenaic Stadium. Admission to the stadium and its adjoining Olympic history museum is €4.

The latter displays Olympic torches and memorabilia from across the globe. You will often see people jogging around the track in the morning

Hike up Lycabettus Hill

Greece itinerary: Lycabettus, Athens

Lycabettus Hill is a slice of tranquility in an otherwise hectic and chaotic city. It towers above the treelined streets of upscale Kolonaki .

Enjoy a pleasant, leisurely stroll through the woodlands and fragrant flower gardens as you ascend the hill. The quaint, whitewashed Orthodox church of Agios Georgios awaits at the top and contains several interesting icons and frescoes inside.

From up here, you have excellent panoramas across Athens and over to the Acropolis. The views are particularly special when the sun begins to set.

At this time, the historical monuments of Athens are illuminated with beautiful twinkling lights. On a clear day, you can see all the way out to Piraeus and the islands of Hydra , Agistri, etc.

Sip Tsipouro in Charming Plaka

dream travel greece

Picturesque Plaka is one of the oldest parts of Athens. This is the heart of the city’s tourist district, sure. However, Plaka is so charming that it is quickly forgiven. Even Athenians often come here for an evening tipple or a spot of lunch.

Plaka boasts a labyrinth-like network of winding alleyways, crumbling Greco-Roman ruins, and eccentric markets and boutiques. Look out for the Roman Agora, the Bathhouse of the Winds, and the Ancient Agora while you’re here.

Grab Food in Plaka

Try to avoid the tourist trap restaurants on the steps of Plaka and nearby Thissio where toots are trying to lure visitors inside. Psaras Fisherman’s Tavern (Erechtheos 16) is one of the oldest restaurants in Athens.

It serves up fresh, mouthwatering seafood dishes with fish sourced from the nearby Aegean. To Kafeneio (Epicharmou 1) is another local favourite.

It has somehow escaped the attention of most visitors to Athens, despite being so centrally located. Sample the marinated country sausages and the meze specialties from Northern Greece .

Venture Off the Beaten Path

dream travel greece

Athenian districts like artsy Pagrati and chic Kifissia are far more charming and personable than the central areas of Syntagma and Monastiraki . Each Athens neighbourhood has its own personality and town centre.

For instance, Exarchia and Metaxourgeio are known for their street art and emerging creative scenes. Meanwhile, underrated Kypseli is where a lot of foreign immigrants move to in Athens, and thus is home to vibrant international markets and eclectic stores.

You may wish to consider taking a walking tour of these parts of the city with a local. That way, you can really get beneath the surface of what the Greek capital has to offer and discover places that you may not have otherwise considered.

Where to Stay in Athens

Greece Itinerary: The "New" Acropolis Museum

Opting to stay in Syntagma, Koukaki , Psiri or Makriyianni will put you in the heart of the action. Here, you are just a short walk away from the main Athenian attractions.

However, venturing a little further afield gives a better insight into local life and culture. This guide on where to stay in Athens discusses the various Athenian neighbourhoods and gives a runthrough of the best possible options.

Day Five: Delphi

The ancient city of Delphi is one of 18 UNESCO world heritage sites in Greece . It is a must-visit for those interested in Greek history and mythology .

Legend has it that Zeus sent two eagles on a quest to find the central point of the universe. They flew to Delphi, and so, the city was built here.

There are several notable sites and ruins at Delphi. These include the temple of Apollo, an ancient amphitheater, and a fascinating museum displaying various artifacts recovered from the region.

Delphi is easily accessible by bus from Athens. It also places you just a short drive away from the next stop on this cultural 10 day Greece itinerary: Meteora.

Days Six and Seven: Meteora

The monasteries at Meteora are a breathtaking sight to behold. The name translates to meaning “suspended in the air”. Quite a fitting name.

This is the second-largest monastic community in Europe. It is second only to Mount Athos in Halkidiki .

The first monks arrived here around the 14th century and crafted 24 stunning Orthodox monasteries on the edges of the craggy cliffs. Today, only six of the original structures remain.

However, it is possible to venture inside, and their interiors are every bit as breathtaking as the exteriors. The scenic hiking trails that wind between the sites, and the stunning natural scenery make Meteora a highlight of any 10-day Greece itinerary.

Many beautiful hotels are located in nearby Kalambaka. Most of these offer impressive views over the monasteries for sunrise and sunset.

The various monasteries of Meteora are open at different times. You can check the specifics with your hotel.

Keep in mind that conservative dress is required for entering most monasteries. This means keeping your legs and shoulders covered.

Days Eight to Ten: Thessaloniki

White Tower, Thessaloniki

Thessaloniki is a city of remarkable history, sumptuous cuisine, and incredible sea views, a must-see on your week in Greece. This is Greece’s second city.

The streets and promenades of Thessaloniki are always teeming with life and activity. During the days of the Ottoman Empire, Thessaloniki was a city of major importance.

Start your Thessaloniki itinerary by stopping by the White Tower. This is the city’s most notable landmark.

Enjoy a leisurely stroll alongside the seafront as you enjoy the views over the Thermaic Gulf. When the sun sets, check out the vibrant tavernas and restaurants at the Ladadika district .

For drinks, head to the upscale bars that overlook the sunken gardens of Agios Ioannis. Ano Poli is one of the oldest parts of town and consists of quaint, colourful, Ottoman-era houses, many of which have been converted into charming stores, guesthouses, and eateries.

Thessaloniki airport offers onward flight routes to numerous destinations across Europe. Alternatively, you can find a cheap flight back to Athens with a Greek domestic airline for your return flight onwards.

Greece Itinerary 2: Ancient Civilisations & Beautiful Islands

Best time to travel: Shoulder season months (May, June and September)

The Greek islands are a paradise on earth. With translucent cerulean waters and miles upon miles of pristine sandy white beaches, it is not hard to understand why so many people love them. The islands are the main reason that many people pen Greece into their travel bucket lists in the first place.

This 10 days in Greece itinerary takes you to some of the most beloved Greek island destinations. From the romantic sunsets of Santorini to the glamorous beaches of Mykonos, and the secluded paradise of Koufonisia.

Days One and Two: Athens

Greece Itinerary: Filoppapou Hill

A 10 day Greece itinerary that combines visiting the mainland and the islands is perfect. Such a trip enables you to see all sides of what this Mediterranean oasis has to offer.

Spend two days in Athens. This is enough to get a taster of the city’s culture and heritage.

From there, head on to the islands that the country is best known for. From Athens, fly or take the ferry to Santorini .

Days Three to Five: Santorini

Greece Itinerary

Santorini’s reputation precedes it. The Greek isle is instantly recognisable around the world.

It is characterised by its iconic white Cycladic buildings that cascade down cliff faces, its multicoloured cliffs, and its volcanic sand beaches. Santorini is likely the main image that springs to mind at any mention of travelling to Greece.

There may be a lot of hype around Santorini but this is for good reason. Santorini, with its dazzling sunsets and panoramas, is one of the most beautiful travel destinations in Southern Europe.

Things to do in Santorini

dream travel greece

You will not be short of things to do in Santorini. A selection of the island highlights is discussed below.

Santorini Highlights

  • Conquer the Fira to Oia hike
  • Navigate through the labyrinth-like streets of old Fira
  • Visit the Akrotiri ruins
  • Spend an afternoon in Ammoudi Bay
  • Explore the ruins of old Byzantine castles
  • Laze on the Red and Black sand beaches

Hike from Fira to Oia

Greece itinerary

The walk from Fira to Oia is an absolute must on this 10-day Greece itinerary. The 10km volcanic trail is one of the best hikes in Greece . It leads you through stunning volcanic landscapes that look like something from another worldly plane.

Along the route, you pass through the beautiful villages of Fira, Imerovigli, Oia, and Firostefani. The long-distance can be broken up with stops along the way.

Drink locally sourced wine in the tavernas of Imerovigli and take photographs as you admire the views over the caldera. The views are particularly magical as you approach golden hour and sunset.

Browse the Quaint Streets of Fira

The quaint streets of Fira are filled with elegant boutique stores that showcase the creations of local designers. They are the perfect choice for treating yourself to a little retail therapy and purchasing one-of-a-kind pieces that you cannot find elsewhere.

Visit the Akrotiri Ruins

The ancient city of Akrotiri dates back to 1630 BC. This bronze age settlement was sadly destroyed by a volcanic eruption on Santorini.

What remains of the site is somewhat similar to Pompeii. However, Akrotiri predates the Italian ruins. Akrotiri is rumored to have inspired Plato’s story of the lost city of Atlantis.

Enjoy an Afternoon in Ammoudi Bay

Ammoudi Bay is a charming port filled with red cliffs and whitewashed tavernas. The eateries here serve excellent seafood dishes, and even Santorini residents come here for dinner.

Ammoudi is relatively off the beaten path as far as Santorini travel goes. It is situated 300 steps below Oia. You can board boats bound for Thirassia from the port here.

Meandering along the seafront promenade is charming. However, the highlight of Ammoudi is the secluded swimming spots and rock pools that are tucked away from view.

A weathered path leads you towards Agios Nikolaos rock. This is a favourite among locals for cliff jumping and swimming.

Explore the Byzantine Castle Ruins

The Byzantine castle in Oia was constructed centuries ago. It was built at a time when pirates were a real threat in Greece and locals needed to fortify their defenses.

Exploring the ruins themselves is interesting. However, the panoramas and viewpoints across the island and the sea from up here are second to none.

Visit the Beaches

Santorini is not renowned for its beaches. There are in fact many Greek islands and travel destinations with more beautiful coastlines than Santorini.

That said, the island does boast some unique seaside destinations. The Perissa black sand beach is a nice place to relax and grab lunch.

So too, is Red Beach. The latter was awarded its name on account of the unusual red shade of the volcanic rock here.

Where to Base Yourself in Santorini

Fira and Oia are the most popular towns in Santorini. The best place to stay depends somewhat on your personal preferences. Oia is the classic town that you see in most photographs and postcards of Santorini.

Arguably this is the most picturesque spot and is home to the most famous sunset in the world. however, Fira is the main town of Santorini.

Fira is filled with plentiful bars, restaurants, and entertainment options. Yet the sunset here doesn’t quite compare.

Days Six and Seven: Koufonisia

The appeal of Santorini and Mykonos is indisputable. However, so too is the draw of venturing off the beaten track to quiet Cycladic islands that escape the eyes of most tourists .

The small island of Koufonisia is one such place. It is a perfect spot to escape the crowds.

The island is less than 4km in length. Yet the paradisiacal beaches, inspiring landscapes, and chic hangouts here have won Koufonisia the title of being the “Mykonos of the Mini Cyclades”.

Koufonisia has been attracting trendy Greek locals for several decades. Yet like a lot of the best places to visit in Greece , it remains relatively undiscovered on a more global scale.

Don’t expect beaches lined with taverns, bars, and nightlife here. Koufonisia is the place to escape from all of the buzzes of modern life.

Here you can enjoy secluded coastlines and stretches of sand that you have virtually all to yourself. This is particularly the case if you are travelling during the shoulder season.

Swim and snorkel off the shores of the white sand Pori beach. By nightfall, enjoy home-cooked Greek dishes lovingly prepared in local tavernas that offer views out across to the nearby uninhabited islands.

Days Eight to Ten: Mykonos

Greece Itinerary

The Greek island of Mykonos is synonymous with glitz, glamour, and the idea of living the good life. You could envisage Mykonos as having the elegance of the south of France, with the same party-hard spirit as Ibiza.

That said, you don’t have to be a night owl to appreciate the appeal of the island. The island has some of the most beautiful scenery in the Cyclades and so, Mykonos caters to everyone.

Some of the best activities to enjoy on the glamorous isle of Mykonos are listed below.

Head to Chora to Check Out the Windmills

The windmills at Chora are perhaps the most recognised landmark of Mykonos. They were used for centuries to refine grain, using the high winds that blow across the island.

Though there were originally dozens of windmills, now only seven remain. Some of these have been renovated into quirky residential homes.

Kato Myloi are the most famous windmills in Chora. They are situated atop a hill that offers incredible views over the sea. The hill is well worth the walk, and this spot is one of the best places on the island to watch the sunset.

Enjoy Dinner and Cocktail Hour at Little Venice

Little Venice consists of colourful, stilted houses that emerge from the sea. Once upon a time, this was a popular hangout spot for pirates!

Today, the stilted houses have been renovated into chic upscale cocktail bars and eateries. Little Venice is one of the best places to enjoy gourmet food with a view during your 10-day Greece itinerary.

Visit Delos, Birthplace of Apollo and Artemis

A day trip to the mysterious island of Delos is one of the most fascinating historical attractions that you could incorporate into your Greece itinerary. This small UNESCO-protected island is considered as being one of the most important archaeological sites in all of Greece!

According to Greek mythology, Delos was the birthplace of Apollo and Artemis. The island was deemed sacred ground, and no mortal was ever permitted to be born or die on the island.

Ruined temples, sculpture guardians, and colonnaded promenades around the island are remarkably well-preserved. Boats depart daily from Mykonos to Delos.

Stroll Around Mykonos Town Centre and the Old Port

Mykonos’ town centre is comprised of maze-like narrow alleyways and quaint cobbled streets. Enjoy getting lost among the colourful buildings, and browsing through the various boutique stores that are scattered around the town centre.

For dinner and drinks, head to Matogianni. This is the place to see and be seen in Mykonos.

Trendy town centre aside, the old port also brings in its share of charm. This area is filled with beautiful churches and cute coffee shops where locals sip strong Greek coffee and play backgammon. It is a lovely place to walk, take photos and people watch – especially as the sun sets behind the fishing boats.

Go Organic Wine Tasting

Mykonos is home to dozens of vineyards that offer tours and tastings to visitors. You can sample exquisite organic local wines along with fresh, homemade Greek delicacies.

Kopanisti and ladotyri cheeses, charcuterie boards, cold cuts, and horiatiki (Greek salad) are all popular accompaniments. Various tour operators offer Mykonos wine tasting excursions. You can also reach out directly to the vineyards that interest you and organise an independent tasting. If you enquire at your hotel/accommodation, your concierge may be able to assist you in organising a private transfer between the wineries.

Extensions for Your Greece Travel Itinerary

Greece Itinerary: Alonissos, Sporades

These Greece itineraries have been created with the idea of fitting as much as possible into your vacation time off work without having to hurry from A to B.

There are so many stunning places to visit in Greece that it is hard to just shortlist a few. However, if you have a little longer to spend in this Mediterranean paradise, additional destinations that you could consider are detailed below.

Arachova is a worthy destination to add to your cultural Greece itinerary. This is particularly the case if you are travelling to Greece during the winter . The small mountain village is a popular romantic getaway for Greeks during the Christmas period.

Arachova is famed for its reputation as a ski resort. However, it also boasts fascinating archaeological sites, beautiful nature, and the chance to have a more “local” travel experience. It doesn’t get any cozier than snuggling up by the fire in a log cabin in the Greek mountains.

Nafplio is the former capital of Greece and arguably one of the most underrated travel destinations across the entire country. It is possible to visit Nafplio on a day trip from Athens . The charming old town, with its cocktail bars and charming tavernas effortlessly captures the hearts of those who visit.

The island of Crete is filled with enough scenery, history, and culture to warrant an entire two-week itinerary all of its own. On a limited schedule though, 3-4 days in Heraklion is well worth incorporating into your Greece travel itinerary.

Heraklion’s charismatic harbour boasts plenty of charming guesthouses overlooking the Mediterranean. Using Heraklion as a base, it’s possible to access some of Crete’s most important sites within a few days. This includes the fort at Knossos and the picturesque town of Agios Nikolaos.

The Saronic Gulf Islands

The islands of the Saronic Gulf are just a few hours away from Athens’ Piraeus port. They boast beautiful secluded beaches and coves, and quaint fishing villages void of tourists.

Explore the quaint port and narrow shopping streets of Hydra – an adorable island where cars do not exist and people get around by horses and donkeys. Alternatively, revel in the rugged natural beauty of Spetses.

Situated on the western coast of the country, the Ionian island of Lefkada is connected to mainland Greece by several bridges. If you are seeking R&R during your Hellenic travels, there are plenty of Lefkada beaches that you can sink your toes into.

Porto Katsiki, Milos, Kathisma, Agiofili, and Egremni are but a few coastal areas that are beloved among locals. Lefkada also makes a good jumping-off point for taking boats out to the islands of Itaka or Kefalonia for a day.

Hi Melissa! I will be traveling to Greece for 9 days in May. I fly in and out of Athens and wanted to incorporate Mykonos, Santorini, Crete and Meteora into my trip. Do you think this is plausible? This would mean 2 days in each place. Would you change this in any way? Thank you!

Hey Emily, Thanks for your message. Your itinerary is certainly possible and all of those are lovely places! The only thing to keep in mind is that it would be a bit hurried. One thing, in particular, is that it takes almost four hours to get to Meteora from Athens so it’s a bit of a trek there and back. Crete is also a very large island. I would be tempted to reduce the number of destinations perhaps and save one or two for next time so that you spend less time travelling and have more time to relax and enjoy the lovely beaches and islands but that is personal preference 🙂 Will you spend any time in Athens itself?

Hi Melissa! Im travelling to Greece this summer. Already booked the following: 1. Land at Athens on 15th August evening 2. Flying from Thessaloniki to Eindhoven (Netherlands) on 27th August 3. Free Earth Festival in Halkidiki – 22nd to 26th August. So I have 16th August to 21st August to travel mainland Greece (i think islands would get expensive for me) starting from Athens and ending at Thessaloniki. After reading your article, I was thinking may be 2-3 days Athens, 1 day Delphi, 1 day Meteora and then to Thessaloniki would be best for me. Do i need accomodation at Delphi and Meteora? Do Delphi and Meteora have cheap accomodation available (hostels)? Do i have travel options that go from Athens to Delphi, Delphi to Meteora, Meteora to Thessaloniki? Are there night buses for these routes?

what would you suggest? i definitely like the chills and beaches (island trips) more but it looks difficult. Sorry for too many questions. And THANK YOU!!!

Many many thanks for your truly excellent insights into Greece. You’ve made my decisions much easier after reading your thoughts. And, even better, you are a really interesting writer! Jim

Awesome itineraries and suggestions. When I traveled to Greece, I explored the islands of Milos and Sifnos, which are just spectacular. Your post makes me want to travel back and spend a few nore months in Greece 🙂

Thanks Viktoria! It’s certainly a beautiful country 🙂 I have been living in Greece for the past two years now and never get tired of exploring it!

What do you think about doing the island hopping itinerary end of March? My best friend and business partner are going to come for ten days and bring our daughters as a surprise. (17 and 19 years old) We want to relax mostly, see amazing cultural sites, beach it and just basically see things that the more common tourist might not see. We need your help! Four amazing women coming for the first time. We started our own company a year ago and with our earnings we’ve decided to treat ourselves and daughters to a getaway to Greece! What should we do? We are game for any type of adventure! Kindly, Kim

Hi Melissa; So glad to have found your blog. Me and my dad are thinking of traveling to ONE of these end of November 2021 for 7-10 days: Hydra, Kythnos, (Poros or Tinos) after your recommendations! Think escape tourists, history, traditional pretty villages n good local food, charming, quiet and somewhere budget pref a family run guesthouse. Just super authentic and off beaten track. My dad is 80 yrs old (no car rental over 70? any exceptions?). I have mobility issues..so preferably easy to get to from Athens & the option to get some kind of ride necessary for main part, and not too hilly/stairs for my poor feet..any suggestions? Hot springs wud b icing on the cake! Help!

Hi Melissa, My husband and I are planning a trip to Greece late September. We love hiking and are looking for a challenging hike. We’ve done Patagonia in Chile and Fisherman’s Trail in Portugal more recently. We are looking for an 8 to 9-day hike, we are flexible. I like the sounds of the Corfu Trail. We are looking for an agent to do the booking and maybe do a luggage transfer if available on that trail. We will be celebrating our tenth wedding anniversary so are looking for a little upscale this time. Would appreciate your suggestions. Thank you. Chantal

Hi Melissa, wow you provide fabulous information! Traveling this July, doing itinerary now! looking to go to Crete, Rhodes, Athens, Santorini, Paros and of course teens want Mykonos but not necessary. Looking at 11-12 days. Ferry rides to and from places. Athens two days and the rest is fun, sun, old towns, local spots and affordable places to stay to be on a budget! Would love your input!

Hi Mellisa, I am glad I found your blog. Lots of good information. My family of 4 are planning trip to Greece on November. We want to go Santorini, Meteora, and Athens. We will be flying from USA. I was thinking to travel first to Santorinir then Meteora and Athens at last. Do you think this order is a good idea? I would love your thought on this. Thank you!

Hi Melissa, Loved your blog. It’s very insightful. I am travelling from India to Greece next month with my husband for 10-12 days. We are not the history types and would rather enjoy nature and nightlife.

This may be my only trip to Greece and thus I want to ensure I don’t miss the must do’s.

So if you could suggest the number of days in each destination; would be of great help. Too many choices are confusing for me.

Also, not very sure of covid restrictions there.

From iconic islands to major cities to the lesser-known, wild region of Epiros, our list of essential Greek destinations has a bit of everything © Georgios Tsichlis / Shutterstock

As its mythical Sirens were reputed to do, Greece has long lured travelers to its scintillating shores.

Across an expansive island archipelago, traditional whitewashed villages, azure seas and waterfront tavernas enchant visitors. Greece’s mountainous mainland, rich in UNESCO World Heritage–listed ancient sites, treasure-filled museums and spirited cities, is no less fascinating. As you contemplate your dream Greece itinerary, consider these 10 favorite places to add to it.

The Caryatids of the Parthenon at sunset, the Acropolis, Athens, Greece

Wherever you walk in Greece’s storied capital, the ancients have walked before – whether you see the evidence or not. From the Acropolis  (whose jewel in the crown is the fifth-century BCE Parthenon ) to the underground metro (where some stations feature archaic finds), Athens  is teeming with historical sites , monuments and museums. A combo card affords entry to the Acropolis and six more sites; the Acropolis Museum is also a must-see.

Easy to tackle on foot, Athens is also one of Europe’s liveliest metropolises – and strolls through neighborhoods like old-town Plaka , flea market–famous Monastiraki and hip Pangrati are highlights. By night, catch a live band in gritty Gazi , catch a movie at an outdoor cinema in Thission or go bar-hopping off the main commercial street Ermou.

Local tip: Book tickets online for a reinvented Greek tragedy or dance troupe performance at the Odeon of Herodes Atticus amphitheater as part of the  Epidaurus Festival , which takes place each summer.

Stunning photograph of a young woman diving in the deep and crystalline waters of the Cyclades islands, Milos,

A collection of over 70 beaches, sea caves hidden beneath limestone cliffs and technicolor traditional boat houses are just some of the reasons why mineral-rich Milos has won the hearts of many travelers. Evidence of its volcanic origins can be seen in the almost lunar landscape of Sarakiniko , where the more daring dive into a jade-colored Aegean. Arrive early at Gerondas beach to nab the generous shade of caves and enjoy floating silently in still waters.

Planning tip: Save a couple of days to spend on Kimolos, a small island northeast of Milos reachable by ferry. One of its most impressive beaches is Prassa, where coarse, blindingly white sand shows off shallow, aquamarine waters to full effect.

The medieval old town of Rhodes, Dodecanese, Greece

Rhodes has long been the Dodecanese ’s biggest draw thanks to its atmospheric UNESCO World Heritage–listed medieval old town . Transformed in the Middle Ages by the Knights of the Order of St John into a formidable fortified city, it fell to the Ottomans, who erected mosques, baths and houses, many of which have been restored. Youngsters might envision armored men on horseback thundering down the cobblestoned Street of the Knights .

Make sure you visit the Palace of the Grand Master , which features stunning Roman and Early Christian floor mosaics, and the Church of Our Lady of the Castle.

Planning tip: Book a state-licensed tour guide to show you around the old town for a full picture of its long and fascinating history.

A couple walks among the iconic white buildings of Oia, Santorini, Cyclades, Greece

4. Santorini

Whether you’re coupled up or not, it’s hard not to fall for Santorini ’s charms. Whitewashed and pastel-hued, cube-shaped homes cling to steep cliffsides above a cobalt Aegean and the island’s famed caldera, formed by volcanic eruptions over millennia.

Weave your way through the narrow alleyways of the postcard-perfect village of Oia amid blue-domed churches. Bathe in thermal springs warmed by an active volcano, splay out on black-sand beaches and don’t miss the prehistoric settlement of Akrotiri , which features an advanced drainage system.

Planning tip: Book a private tour of Santorini ’s smaller wine estates, whose new generation of vintners is breathing new life into traditional wines like mezzo and Nychteri.

Path to the Hermits Cave, near Monastery of Agia Paraskevi, Monodendri, Vikos Gorge, Greece

In Greece’s west lies Epiros , a remote region of soaring mountain peaks, fast-flowing rivers and hidden rock canyons. Hike to the alpine heights of Mt Tymfi’s Dragon Lake, which freezes over in winter, or traverse the thick forests, inclines and descents of spectacular Vikos Gorge . Whitewater rafting thrills and spills await in the Voidomatis or Arachthos rivers, while canyoning enthusiasts can choose from routes of varying difficulty.

View Of a windmill at the top of the whitewashed Hora Village in Serifos, Cyclades, Greece

6. Kythnos and Serifos

If peaceful sandy shores, unassuming waterfront tavernas and sleepy villages are more your style, the low-key West Cyclades isles of Kythnos and Serifos are worth a stop. Kythnos has deep, sheltered bays and tamarisk-dotted silver-sand beaches, among them Lefkes and Naousa.

Wallet-friendly tavernas line the laid-back fishing settlements of Loutro and Meriha, while wind-whipped Serifos , a two-hour ferry ride from Piraeus , features sweeping sandy beaches, sheltered bays, ghostly mining relics and a jewel-like hilltop capital whose neoclassical town hall stands sentinel over the buzzy main square.

Inside Kapani, one of the largest and most popular markets of Thessaloniki, Macedonia, Greece

7. Thessaloniki

At the crossroads of East and West, where the Romans, Byzantines and Ottomans have held sway over the centuries, Thessaloniki tempts serious foodies. Bougatsa , a phyllo pastry pie usually filled with semolina custard, spinach or mince meat, makes for a hearty breakfast. Pick up olives and spices at the olfactory-awakening open-air markets and Pontic cheeses from indoor food hub Modiano , which dates back to 1922. In the former oil merchant district of Ladadika, mezedopolia serve dishes revealing strong Anatolian and Middle Eastern influences, customarily with the fiery clear spirit tsipouro .

Planning tip: Thessaloniki is also renowned for its fish and seafood, served with fervor and pride whether it’s a backstreet taverna or an upscale restaurant. Bookings are recommended for the latter.

Amazing beach of Votsi in Alonnisos island, Greece

Tranquil, turquoise seas, fir-studded hillsides and a regal capital make Corfu one of the most beautiful parts of the country to go sailing. The Ionian isle is the ideal starting point for novices who can take a sailing course and gain certification.

Afterward, join a flotilla for a leisurely cruise around Corfu, dropping anchor at Kalami Bay (of The Durrells fame) and lush Paleokastritsa. In Corfu Town , admire Venetian fortresses, the French-designed Liston Arcade and The Palace of St Michael and St George , built during the island’s British administration.

Planning tip: Few venture to Erikousa island, northwest of Corfu, which is blessed with pristine beaches and shallow cerulean seas.

Venetian harbour of the Pittoresk Cretan town with colorful old houses and loads of people

Greece’s largest island, Crete  abounds in historical sites, well-preserved monuments and modern museums. A wander through the Minoan-era palaces of Knossos , Malia , Phaestos and Kato Zakros  won’t disappoint any fan of classical culture.

Stroll along the Venetian Harbour in Hania , lined with Ottoman monuments such as the Kioutsouk Hasan Mosque . Trek up to Byzantine and Venetian fortresses such as the Fortezza in Rethymno and Kastelli in Hania. In the east, the 16th-century Venetian fortress on Spinalonga islet reveals a harrowing, more recent past as a leper colony.

Among noteworthy museums are the Heraklion Archaeological Museum , Chania’s Maritime Museum of Crete , and the Museum of Ancient Eleutherna in Rethymno.

Homosexual couple watching the sunset at Mykonos

10. Mykonos

In the 1960s and 70s, Mykonos hosted roving hippies, celebrities and moneyed jet-setters who flirted and danced till the sun came up. While new five-star hotels and swanky brand-name restaurants may have altered the landscape and driven up prices, the fabled Cycladic isle still reigns supreme when it comes to summer nightlife in the Mediterranean.

Revelers can choose from the thumping bars lining Little Venice in Hora , as well as beach bars, cabaret restaurants and iconic clubs like seaside Cavo Paradiso , where illustrious music DJs fire up the crowd.

Planning tip: August is Mykonos’ busiest month. It’s also when you can witness the hottest DJs and surprise appearances by music artists, including prominent hip-hop names.

VISIT THE ANCIENT OLYMPIC SITE

The birthplace of the Olympic Games, Olympia first became known to the world in 776 BC, when the very first games were held. Visit this world-famous ancient site that was also a holy place of worship for Zeus, the Greek god, surrounded by lush forestry in a rolling valley.

EXPLORE THE CAPITAL OF ATHENS

Often dubbed the cradle of Western civilisation, Athens was arguably the most influential city of ancient times. Contemporary meets antique in a city both drenched in world history and brimming with a modernity. You’ll discover thermal lakes, buzzing beachside neighbourhoods and some of the world’s oldest ruins.

Things to Do in Greece

SEE THE RUINS OF THE TEMPLE OF APOLLO

Reachable by a day trip from Athens, the Temple of Apollo at Delphi was rebuilt numerous times before settling into the historic site it inhabits today. Marvel at the remaining sandstone columns and decayed limestone that remind us of the past it endured over many thousands of years.

VISIT  MONASTERIES  IN METEORA

One of Greece’s most popular tourist attractions, it’s easy to see why so many flock to the spectacular rock formations of Meteora. Marvel at talents of both man and Mother Nature at the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Byzantine monasteries that float around the summits.

ATHENS: ACROPOLIS MUSEUM

The Acropolis Museum is found at the foot of the western world’s most important ancient site. Unpeel layers of history as you wander the halls of the past and gaze up at the dazzling site itself through glass walls. Allow yourself at least half a day to take in the enormity of this museum.

ATHENS: WAR MUSEUM

Opening its doors in 1975, the Athens War Museum documents the country’s past conflicts and military artefacts. In honour of those who fought for Greece’s freedom, the museum showcases four grand floors of past-to-present history. History enthusiasts will find no shortage of awe within these walls.

MYCENAE: REMAINS OF AGAMEMNON'S ROYAL PALACE

Tours in Greece are scarcely complete without a visit to this iconic archaeological site, where you will find the remains of Agamemnon's Royal Palace, one of the world’s best-preserved fortresses. Glance up and admire unrivalled panoramic views of the countryside, once the Greek civilisation’s major military centres.

Seafood Paella

Souvlaki is street food at its very best. A simple preparation of skewered meats and vegetables, it’s the flavouring that makes this snack a pride of the nation. For the most authentic souvlaki, sample if from a street vendor wrapped up with condiments, salad and thick hot chips.

KOLOKYTHOKEFTEDES

The small fried balls of kolokythokeftedes can most aptly be compared to zucchini fritters with fetta cheese. Often ordered in summer with a side of tzatziki, these delicious bites are a great starter to any meal. Learn from the locals and snack on kolokythokeftedes alongside a glass of wine in the warm afternoon sun.

Standing its ground as one of Greece’s most famous main meals, moussaka is a wholesome and delectable combination of eggplant, ground meat, onion and béchamel sauce. Try this dish a few times during your visit; there are family variations that get passed through generations.

CULINARY DELIGHTS

DINE 'MEZE STYLE' IN PSYRI, ATHENS

Most travel guides will have you visiting Plaka for Greek food and nightlife, but authentic eateries are best found in the nearby neighbourhood of Psiri. Between no-frills bars and dusty antique shops, you will find traditional mezze-style eateries and a boutique energy that pays tribute to Greece’s culinary heritage.

This Greek island offers the same beautiful white-walled villages as Santorini and Mykonos but with fewer tourists and crowds. Milos is the perfect spot for getting a feel for the true local culture of the Greek islands since most cruises and guided tours don’t make a stop here.

dream travel greece

The islands typically tend to be the star of the show when visiting the ancient country of Greece.  This comes with good reason, as the Greek islands are truly stunning locations for any kind of traveler. Albeit, the mainland of Greece is a knockout destination that’s typically off the beaten path for any mainstream traveler. In this 7 to 10-day Greece mainland itinerary, expect waterfalls, mighty mountain ranges, medieval towns, bustling and exciting cities, and the mystical home of the Greek Gods.

Table of Contents

Getting To & Around Mainland Greece

This route spans the majority of the mainland, from the southern Peloponnese to the northern city of Thessaloniki , so various modes of transport are possible as well as ideal.

My recommendation is to hire a car and drive throughout your trip. The longest journey time is around 4 ½ hours making driving the easiest, most convenient, and most cost-efficient way to travel around the Greek mainland. You can browse Rentalcars.com to compare options for hiring a car.

A mainland Greece road trip is one of the best ways to experience this relatively undiscovered part of the country by tourists.

If you’re planning on flying into Greece, I recommend flying into the Athens International Airport. The itinerary begins in the capital and it’s the main airport, making flights the most frequent and affordable in comparison to other airports in Greece.

Another option for getting around on this mainland Greece itinerary is by bus. The KTEL bus system is essentially the national bus transport, connecting cities and towns throughout the country.

Ancient Theatre in Epidaurus

You can typically find routes for major cities or towns and sometimes smaller places if they’re frequently visited by tourists and locals.

Costs differ, so you can expect to pay between €5 and €25 depending on the route and although tickets can be affordable, if you choose to use the bus as a main means of transport throughout the country it can add up quickly.

Train transport is also another option, but the routes in Greece aren’t as extensive as in other countries in Europe. This means that there may be gaps in transportation, but those can be filled by bus.

The downside to taking bus or train transport is that if you’re hoping to visit more remote destinations in mainland Greece, it can be hard to make your way there from the main transport routes. These tickets can also easily add up to double the cost of a rental car, so keep this in mind if you’re torn between the two.

If you don’t like the idea of public transport or renting a car, you can also find tour groups that go to the majority of destinations, making it a seamless way to travel without the stress of driving or planning.

Ruins in Corinth on mainland Greece

7 to 10-Day Greece Mainland Itinerary

The mainland of Greece is full of countless treasures. From the rustic mountains and quaint villages of central Greece and the Peloponnese to the hectic and exciting cities of Athens and Thessaloniki; you’re bound to discover countless new jewels in the most undiscovered part of Greece; the mainland.

While the islands are outstanding locations to visit on any dream itinerary, the best way to get to know the heart of Greece and everyday life is through the mainland.

Day 1 – Athens

This mainland Greece itinerary begins with 2 days in the same place where modern democracy began as well as the capital city, Athens . You’ll likely be flying into the Athens International Airport, making the Greek capital a great and convenient starting point.

Athens is a great way to begin as you’ll have the opportunity to get your bearings in a new country, discover Greek foods, and see some of the most important ruins in ancient history.

Although the city is quite small, there’s an abundance of things to do. Because of this, you can decide to mold your time in different ways, from exploration of the Ancient Greek world to the cultural side of what makes modern-day Athens what it is today.

No matter how you choose to spend your time, make sure to not miss a visit to the Acropolis , a wander around the classic Greek neighborhood of Plaka , and a long wholesome meal at a classic Greek tavern.

Other ways to explore further into Athens are plentiful and unique; venture into the southern suburbs of Athens to explore Poseidon’s Temple in Cape Sounio or take a dip in the sea around an hour away from Athens at Schinias beach.

Day 2 – Athens

Spend your second day in Athens getting to know the city a bit deeper. If you spent day one checking off all of the well-known highlights like the Acropolis and exploring some cool, central neighborhoods, consider taking in a museum or two on your second day – such as the Archaeological Museum or the Benaki Museum.

You could also opt to get a bit off the beaten path and explore some cool neighborhoods like Psyri and Monastiraki or even opt to go on a food tour , where you can learn about all of the Athenian specialities.

National Archaeological Museum

Day 3 – Nafplio and Epidaurus (Peloponnese)

After getting acquainted with Greece in Athens, you’ll head south to the neighboring Peloponnese region.

The Peloponnese region is an alluring peninsula south of central Greece offering one of the most exciting and unique experiences in Greece. Although this itinerary only offers a taster of one day in the Peloponnese, I highly suggest exploring the region on a deeper level if you have the time.

With just one day in the Peloponnese, you’ll make your way first to the picturesque town of Nafplio. Nafplio is a coastal city in the Peloponnese offering idyllic views and architecture, wonderful food, and a pleasant place to experience the Peloponnese.

After, head about half an hour away to the ancient town of Epidaurus to explore the stunningly peaceful nature of the Peloponnese and the ancient ruins and theatre of the town of Epidaurus.

Day 4 – Delphi

Day 4 of this road trip will bring you back through central Greece and to the legendary, and one of the most visited places on the mainland of Greece, the ancient site of Delphi.

Delphi is about 3 ½ hours away from Athens and on the way to Delphi, you’ll also pass through Ancient Corinth and the Corinth Canal connecting central Greece to the upper point of the Peloponnese. Alternatively, you could also visit the ancient site of Olympia, another incredible place in the Peloponnese.

If you have extra time and are particularly interested in ancient history, I recommend making a stop in Corinth to explore the ruins and the grand Corinth Canal and see the blue water of the Corinthian Gulf before heading to Delphi.

Delphi is the first stop in central Greece and once spending time there, you’ll quickly understand why it’s one of the most visited spots in Greece. Take time to explore the archaeological site and museum, witness the famous Temple of Apollo, and find yourself in awe of the Sanctuary of Athena Pronaia.

Delphi is also an area of outstanding natural beauty, so even just spending a few hours in the area is a great chance to connect to nature. Afterwards, head to the nearby town of Arachova to enjoy a local meal for lunch. You could also visit the lovely village of Nafpaktos.

Apollo Temple in Delphi

Where to Stay in Delphi

Day 5 – Meteora

After leaving Arachova and Delphi, day 5 will take you about 3 ½ hours away to one of the best places to visit in all of Greece, Meteora. One of the highlights of taking the time to explore the Greek mainland is that you don’t have to make a choice between visiting Delphi or Meteora.

Meteora is easily one of the most outstanding places to visit in all of Greece, and with good reason. Located next to the small town of Kalambaka, the area is a striking formation of rocks sprawling from the earth with a collection of Byzantine Eastern Orthodox monasteries bravely sitting on top.

With the construction of these monasteries beginning in the 11th century, Meteora is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a gift for all who visit. During your stay, you can either hike to the monasteries or drive above to have easier access and saved time.

Days 6 & 7 of this route will bring you closer to the northern Greek border and 3 hours from Meteora to the Pindus mountain range and region of Zagori.

The region of Zagori is a collection of around 40 villages cosily nestled in the Pindos mountains and full of tradition, rugged wilderness, and truly breathtaking scenery.

In Zagori, visit the striking Vikos Gorge, the deepest gorge in the world in the Vikos-Aoos National Park, enjoy one of the numerous hiking paths in the region and appreciate the unique Zagorian architecture spanning through the villages.

For accommodation, you’ll find all sorts of options from luxurious boutique hotels to affordable bed and breakfasts and mid-range hotel options.

Mainland Greece is truly a haven for nature lovers and Zagori is the prime destination for those looking for a stay off the beaten path.

Day 7 – Zagori

On your second day in the Zagori, take a bit more time to explore some of the places you didn’t make it to on the first day. Enjoy the laid-back nature and stunning scenery of the area and get active on a few of the many hiking trails you can find.

If you’re following the 7-day itinerary rather than 10, this day will conclude your trip. Either head onward in Greece to your following destination or head back to Athens to fly onward.

Village of Aristi in Zagori region

Day 8 – Mount Olympus

After spending time in the pristine Zagori region, you’ll head northwest to one of the most famous areas in Greece and one of the most famous mountains in the world, Mount Olympus.

Mount Olympus is about a 3-hour drive away from Zagori and although the hike to the top in its entirety is only recommended for well-experienced travelers, you can still enjoy the famous scenery with a nice hike and time in the nearby villages.

Although its fame is due to being the home of the Greek Gods, it is the first national park in Greece and one with some of the most diverse flora and fauna in the country.

The town of Litochoro is located at the foot of Mount Olympus and is a great spot to base yourself to explore the mountain and have a start on many of the trails.

The town itself dates back to the 14th century, has plenty of appetizing restaurants, and still has abundant Macedonian architecture throughout the town offering a unique glimpse into the region and its history.

Day 9 – Thessaloniki

While the majority of this trip is amongst nature and smaller Greek villages and towns, the last stop for those spending the full 10 days on this Greece mainland itinerary is the second biggest city in Greece, Thessaloniki .

The city itself is about a 2 1⁄2 hour drive away from Mount Olympus and within the city, you’ll find the wonder of the proud Greek mountainous treasure keeping watch over Thessaloniki. The city itself is typically quite overlooked on any Greek itinerary but is worth the visit in its own right.

From the gritty Balkan architecture, to what’s known as the best food scene in Greece, Thessaloniki is easily one of the most underrated destinations on the Greece mainland.

During your visit, make sure to have a fresh bougatsa from a local bakery (a specialty pastry originating in Thessaloniki), wander the seafront and port, stop by the White Tower, and wander through Ladadika, Thessaloniki’s old town as well as Morichovou Square.

White Tower in Thessaloniki

Where to Stay in Thessaloniki

Blue Bottle Boutique Hotel – A funky mid0rang hotel in the center of Thessaloniki, there are plenty of bright rooms to choose from, a great breakfast and private parking available to guests.

Teight Hotel – A luxe and modern hotel within easy reach of the top Thessaloniki attractions, this place boasts an on-site bar, room service, great breakfast and a range of spacious rooms on offer.

Zeus is Loose Hostel – A very highly-rated hostel perfect for backpackers and budget travellers, there are lots of dorms (and private rooms) here, great common areas, kitchen facilities and an excellent atmosphere for guests.

Day 10 – Thessaloniki

Spend your final day in Thessaloniki (and the final day of this 10-day Mainland Greece itinerary) digging deeper and really getting to know Greece’s second city.

Take the time to explore some cool neighborhoods, take a lot of leisurely strolls along the waterfront or, perhaps, take a food tour to learn more about the gastronomic scene in this “foodie” city.

Thessaloniki also has one of the largest airports in Greece offering routes connecting to the rest of Europe, making it the perfect departure point at the end of this trip. You can also reach other Balkan destinations from the city, as it’s easy to get from Thessaloniki to Sofia, Bulgaria and other neighbouring countries.

Thessaloniki waterfront

Have More Time?

If you have more time to spend, there are plenty of other points of interest worth visiting.

If you’re keen on exploring deeper into the Peloponnese, you can easily tack on another few days or week and head further south into the region, discovering Ancient Sparta, the crystalline Mani Peninsula, and the Medieval island town of Monemvasia with its beautiful Venetian castle.

After visiting the towns of Zagori, head to Ioannina, the capital city of the Zagori region, to enjoy one of the oldest lakes in the world, Lake Pamvotis.

For those interested in exploring a different region of mainland Greece, I suggest making your way to Volos, a port city in the region of Thessaly full of history, culture, delicious cuisine and the gateway to the neighboring Northern Sporades islands, Skiathos and Skopelos.

Sparta

Whether or not the mainland of Greece has already been on your dream travel list, it’s undoubtedly a destination that you’ll discover is full of abundance. You’ll explore deep parts of Ancient history, get lost in Greece’s wilderness, and experience what life is like in the country’s biggest cities and smallest towns.

Spending 7 days or more in this part of Greece before hopping over to the islands is a great way to discover Greek culture and Greece without hoards of tourists.

Greece itinerary 10 days - how to plan your dream Greece vacation

There’s a reason Greece has been on the traveller’s radar since the seventeenth century. More correctly, there are several: spectacular ruins, warm sunny skies, beach-clad islands speckled in turquoise shallows, and elaborate meze platters served in small tavernas smelling of ouzo and retsina. So if you’re planning a trip to Greece, read on!

Tailor-Made Greece: Jewel of the Mediterranean

Experience the riches of Greece on a customizable private journey of must-see sights, including whitewashed Mediterranean villages; ruins that mark the birth of Western civilization; and the sun-drenched islands of Santorini and Mykonos, where you taste local wine and pastries, and absorb the beauty of the rugged, coastal setting.

The LGBT+ situation in Greece

The powerful Orthodox Church has fought – largely unsuccessfully – against the normalisation of same-sex relationships, with attitudes on the streets having taken a huge liberal swing over the past decades. Membership of the European Union, a return to democracy, and the country’s tradition of kindness to strangers have all made Greece a popular LGBT+ destination in a country where museums are proud of their homoerotic ancient ceramics.

Best time of year to visit Greece

If you’re planning a trip to Greece it’s good to know that the kindly southern Mediterranean climate means it’s possible to strip off on the beaches from late spring onward, with the early part of the season offering up Easter festivities and a carpet of wildflowers. July and August are the busiest months when temperatures are at their peak and competition for the best hotels can be fierce. The season comes to an end with the grape harvest in late October, after which time you’ll need to swap your beach towel for a pair of skis to make the most of 10 days in Greece!

Top tips for your Greece vacation

Greece may be something of a shock for all those who wholeheartedly embrace the cashless society, with cash still very definitely king. While the big stores in Athens accept credit cards, keep in mind that many restaurants (and even some hotels) don’t. ATMs are readily available in all the big cities and popular vacation resorts, though they can be difficult to find on smaller islands.

Public transport has improved a lot in recent years, but their cheap rates make taxis a popular choice. Unlike elsewhere in the world, drivers might not take your fare if your destination doesn’t suit, and if there’s only a couple of you, you might find yourself sharing the taxi with others – though not, unfortunately, the fare.

Though it shouldn’t be overstated, your biggest threat in Greece is likely to be from pickpockets. If you fall foul of these guys you should report the incident to the tourist police – simply dial 171.

Choosing the best Greek Islands for your 10 day Greece Itinerary

There are almost as many Greek Islands as there are days of the year, of which some 200-odd are inhabited. Isolated for centuries, many have developed their own unique ways of life, and no two are really alike, which is a wonderful problem to have when it comes to settling on a Greece vacation itinerary.

Greece itinerary 10 days

They may not be the most Indiana Jones of destinations, but Athens, Santorini, Mykonos and the Ionian Islands are popular for a reason. Here’s how to explore them all as part of a 10 day Greece itinerary.

Days 1 and 2 – Athens

Athens has plenty to entice anyone on a vacation in Greece beyond the obligatory international airport, and it’s well worth lingering for a couple of days before your Greek trip goes offshore. The sometimes gritty and always bustling streets of the Greek capital may not have the immediate good looks of Paris or Rome , but this helps make its long list of attractions even more of a surprise.

Rising above it all is the Acropolis, where the majestic columns of the Parthenon have stood proud against the blue sky for two and a half millennia. Ringing it you’ll find a number of other unmissable ancient attractions, including the Roman-era agora, Socrates’ prison, and the contemporary architecture of the Acropolis Museum – sights that together will easily occupy you for most of the day.

A short way north stands the Hellenic Parliament, at the front of which the kilted and intricately-dressed soldiers known as evzones hold vigil over the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and go through an unnecessarily elaborate Changing of the Guard ceremony each morning at 11 am, as detailed in our Athens City Guide . End your time in the Greek capital relaxing amid the cypress trees of the neighbouring National Botanic Garden, complete with its own museum, duck pond, and zoo.

How to get to the Greek Islands

During the summer months, Athens is almost awash with flights to Santorini, with up to 20 aircraft a day making the 45-minute run. Slower but more evocative, ferries run from Athens’ port at Piraeus to Santorini in around five hours, with several ships daily, including a useful night ferry that departs just before midnight.

Days 3 to 5 – Santorini and Mykonos

Glamourous, inclusive, and spectacularly beautiful, the whitewashed villages that are home to the best hotels in Santorini may not be heavy on gay nightlife, but do offer some of the finest sunsets on the planet, alongside a laidback vibe that’s a world away from the hectic streets of central Athens.

The rugged remnants of an ancient underwater volcano, the island is perfect for a gentle stroll between long lunches and cocktail hour, or to top up your tan on beaches that are white, red, and even black like Vlychada Beach, a stretch of coast backed by sheer cliffs that is the destination of choice for Santorini’s gay crowd.

Wild, party-loving and unabashed, Mykonos is everything that Santorini is not. While the word hedonist may originate elsewhere in Greece, there’s no better way to describe Mykonos, an island that promises to be anything but boring, with summer parties stretching from dusk till dawn, and proudly flying the rainbow flag above their doors. You can get the full lowdown on the island with our dedicated Mykonos City Guide .

The rocky coastline hides beautiful beaches a short distance from mountains equipped with hiking trails and ancient ruins

Days 6 to 9 – The Ionian Islands

Strung close to Greece’s western shore, the Ionian Islands – of which Corfu and Zakynthos are the best known – are a fine blend of everything your vacation to Greece has been so far. The rocky coastline hides beautiful beaches a short distance from mountains equipped with hiking trails and ancient ruins, and seas ripe for sailing, water sports, and scuba diving. There’s certainly no shortage of things to do on the Greek Ionian Islands during your three day stay!

Day 10 – Athens

Heading back to the capital for day 10 of your Greece travel itinerary means you can catch up on anything you missed at the beginning of your vacation, but also protects against circumstances that might otherwise force you to miss your flight home. Bad weather can affect flight and ferry schedules, while Greek workers aren’t immune to the odd strike.

Alternatives to the Greek Islands

Prefer to stay on mainland Greece? There are certainly plenty of tempting options if you do, with circuits that take in Delphi, the Peloponnese, and Thessaloniki managing to combine city life, historic wonders, and delightful Mediterranean landscapes. Nor do you have to miss out on the beach life if you don’t want to!

Your Trip to the Greece: The Complete Guide

Your Trip to Greece: The Complete Guide

dream travel greece

A visit to Greece can be a dream vacation as long as you know what your dream really is and plan for it. The country's beautiful beaches and world-famous archaeological sites are just two (of many!) reasons to visit Greece . But whatever your reason, use this guide to learn more about the various regions of Greece, how to travel around the country and what to expect of Greece's food, culture, and sights.

Planning Your Trip

Best Time to Visit : Spring and early fall are the best times to visit when there are fewer tourists but the sea is still warm and the weather fine for outdoor activities.

Language: Greek . English is spoken in the cities and areas popular with visitors.

Currency: Euro (€) .

Getting Around: Train service in Greece is limited. An exception is the InterCity Network run by TrainOSE that connects Athens to Thessaloniki and several other cities. Buses, including both local and intercity services, are run by regional cooperatives known as KTEL. The services are not nationally coordinated, so you need to look up KTEL for the region you plan to visit. This KTEL Macedonia website (covering the area around Thessaloniki) is typical. Athens and Thessaloniki have local and suburban public transportation systems. Athen's Metro (expanded for the Olympics) is particularly good, cheap, and clean. Hundreds of ferries connect the mainland to the islands and mainland coastal ports to each other. Private companies run the ferries, and there is no nationwide timetable. Save time and money by using the services of a Greek travel agent to book ferries and for information about buses and trains. Greek websites on these subjects are not well developed for international travelers, but agents are common in ports and city centers.

Travel Tip: Driving in Greece is not for the faint-hearted. Even though many of the highways have been improved in recent years, mountain roads can be hair raising. That, coupled with Greek driving habits, means that the country has a much higher accident rate than elsewhere in Europe.

Things to Do

Eighty percent of Greece is covered in mountains, divided into many peninsulas, and separated by canals . There are also about 6,000 islands, 227 of them inhabited, and thousands of miles of coast. Getting from one part of the country to another can be complicated so it's important to know, in advance, what you want to do and where to find it:

  • Two major cities, Athens , the center of Classical Greece, and Thessaloniki , the heart of Byzantine Greece, are hubs of culture, museums, fashion, nightlife, shopping, dining, and festivals. Both are good bases for touring.
  • Fragrant woodlands, dramatic mountains, olive groves and sacred sites dedicated ancient oracles and gods cover mainland Greece. Byzantine fortresses and remote monasteries perch between deep, folded mountain valleys.
  • Wherever you go in Greece you'll find thousands of years of history, from the earliest signs of democracy to the temples and theaters of the ancient world as well as the remnants of the Romans and the Byzantines. The Parthenon, the Acropolis , and the Temple of Apollo at Delphi are among the most popular sites.
  • The thousands of Greek islands and beaches are an essential part of Greece and Greek culture and are surprisingly easy to reach by plane or ferry. Islands like Crete , Santorini , and Kefalonia are worth a trip on their own.

What to Eat and Drink

Though the foodie scene in the cities is becoming pan-European and international, the best things to eat in Greece are still fresh and local. Octopus and kalamari (fried rings of squid) are popular taverna fare. Fresh Greek salads with feta or local cheeses, a squeeze of lemon and tangy olive oil, are part of every meal. Look for sweets flavored with mastic, a gum from evergreen trees. You may be welcomed to your hotel with a spoonful of cherry or apricot jam and a glass of water.

Take some time to stop at a kafenio (cafe) for coffee and honey-soaked Greek pastries, like baklava and kataifi , or the custard pie known as galaktoboureko . A popular outdoor coffee drink, apparently invented accidentally in Thessaloniki, is frappé. It's made of instant coffee, ice water, and sugar beaten with an electric whisk to form a foam.

The Greeks these days are producing outstanding red and white wines from vineyards in Crete and Santorini. Ouzo, flavored with aniseed, is similar to French pastis drinks. It is sweet and robust and, when added to water, turns white. It packs a lethal punch. If you have a taste for firewater, try the raw spirit made from the byproducts of winemaking. It's called raki in Crete and Tsipouro or Tsikoudia everywhere else. As far as local beers are concerned, microbreweries have caught on, and there are excellent craft beer makers. Look for Red Donkey, a fruity amber ale from Santorini.

Learn more about what to eat and drink in Greece, including the top 10 dishes to try in Greece and the best restaurants in Athens .

Where to Stay

Accommodations in Greece range from quirky Athens boutiques in bohemian neighborhoods like Psirri to corporate giants, like the Athens Hilton in the city center or the luxury Hotel Grande Bretagne in Syntagma Square. The area immediately west of Syntagma Square and into Monastiraki has a concentration of moderately priced three and four-star hotels.

Learn more about the best hotels in Athens, as well as top neighborhoods to visit in Athens .

Getting There

The main international airport for Greece is Athens International Airport , with connecting flights to Thessaloniki, Kalamata , and several of the islands, including Crete and Santorini. Athens Airport is on a main highway and is about 20 minutes from the city center by car or taxi (taxi fares are set by law). Car rental, pick up and drop off, is easiest to arrange at the airport. The cheapest and fastest way to get to the airport from Athens is by Metro Line 3. The airport Metro station is well marked. There are also bus services from the airport to the ports of Piraeus, Rafina, and Lavrio.

To find out more about getting to Greece, explore the best ways to get to Athens Airport , how to take the ferry from Athens to Santorini and how to avoid taxi scams in Greece .

Culture and Customs

Outside of the big cities and major tourist resorts, Greece is a relatively conservative country. In small towns and rural areas, women should dress modestly, avoiding bare shoulders, exposed bosoms, tight or very short skirts or shorts. Even in the cities, cover up before entering Greek Orthodox churches. And, if you are visiting monasteries like the ones at Meteora, don't wear trousers. If you do, the monks will give you wrap around skirts to put on over pants.

Nude and topless bathing is tolerated in many parts of Greece, and on some of the islands, like Crete and Spetses, a short walk beyond the end of a popular beach will take you to a nude beach area. But check with your hotel or a local taverna first. Nude bathing is still technically illegal. On the small islands and in more rural places, Greek families from the small mountain villages visit the beach on weekends with their families. Nude bathing that may be tolerated during the week is not allowed on weekends and school holidays.

Check out everything you need to know about nude bathing in Greece and discover Crete's best nude beach.

Money-Saving Tips

  • Travel in the off-season: The most popular time to visit, with the highest prices from June to September. Visit in May or October, and the weather is reliably warm, but prices are much lower.
  • Consider self-catering: That's what Europeans call vacation rentals. Efficiency apartments and small villas are usually cheaper than hotel accommodation, and you can save quite a bit by cooking some of your meals yourself.
  • Rent an electric bicycle or moped: They're cheaper than rental cars and popular for getting around on islands and in coastal resorts. Just be careful. They are very noisy, and you may not be aware of traffic coming up behind you.
  • Take advantage of what's free: Most museums and historical attractions have free admission on certain days or for certain groups of travelers. Look up the site you're interested in on the Greek Ministry of Culture & Sports website . In the left column of your attraction's listing, click on "Information," and you'll find all the free days.

I'm sorry I didn't get back to you sooner, but I was swamped the day we returned and I'm just catching up before I leave on a business trip Monday. Just let me say Pam and I enjoyed our trip to Greece immensely.

The scenery, food, accommodations and, most of all, the Greek people make this one of our favorite trips ever. Everything you arranged was provided smoothly and seamlessly with no problems over 14 days.

We really enjoyed Athens and our guide, Vicky was especially knowledgeable and gave us wonderful insights of Greek history and prepared us for the Acropolis and the terrific museum. Highly recommended! We actually found Athens to be a wonderful city and enjoyed walking around and taking in the culture and everyday life. Our hotel was situated very well and the rooftop views amazing.

Santorini was as spectacular and breathtaking as we expected. Pictures simply do not do it justice. The Alta Mare was a great choice and we loved our little cave room with the outside jacuzzi and spent many hours just relaxing and sipping wine admiring our view.

George never overlooked any detail and made us feel at home and welcomed at all times. He arranged a sunset cruise which was one of the highlights of our trip.

The ship and crew were terrific, the beaches and waters excellent and the barbecue was first class. We made some very fast friends with a United Nations of people from China to Peru to Australia and New Zealand. We also enjoyed the beautiful restaurant at the Andronis and used the spa several times. The only downside for us was the amount of stairs to get to and from our room. When we go back, maybe we can find a room a little closer to the top, but I minor complaint when judging our overall satisfaction.

The high speed boat to Mykonos was fine and the Petasos was fantastic. We had a great room close to everything and enjoyed the pool area, spa and the many restaurants at the beach a short walk away. We had a great evening at one of the restaurants with Greek dancing that was a lot of fun. Even the Sofitel at the airport was very nice and they took great care of us. Talk about convenient to the airport!

All in all, a very enjoyable experience and very professionally handled by you and your team at Travelive.

Thanks again for the great trip.

Best Regards,

Just wanted to thank you for the good planning and advice for our trip to Greece. Our accommodations were good. We especially liked Mykonos Palace. The staff there was awesome, especially the manager. She went beyond the call to help us in every way. Our guide in Athens to the Acropolis, whose first name was Anna, could not have been more knowledgeable or helpful. She was very kind and assisted us in every way needed. The suggestion from you to get a private tour was so right. We moved right through the crowds with our able guide and watched the large groups dealing with all sorts of confusion. Our hotel in Santorini was so convenient to everything. We walked to restaurants and shopping and enjoyed the pool. All of the transfers went like clockwork and the drivers were very courteous.

If we can ever use your services again, it would be with the utmost confidence.

Thanks again.

Thank you so much for reaching out. I have been meaning to write to you. Our trip was absolutely incredible! It was truly a trip of a lifetime. Everything was so perfect and we felt a sense of relief knowing that you and your colleagues at Travelive took care of every little detail for us. Both hotels were amazing!

At the Mykonos Grand we met other honeymooners or anniversary goers from around the world. The staff was kind and courteous and catered to our every need. From buffing our sunglasses, to the cold towels by the pool and fresh sorbet they really made you feel like a star. They even greeted us every morning asking us how we slept and made sure to make a point of saying that we should come back once our baby is born in October. I LOVED the hotel and to be honest, we only went into the town of Mykonos for a little while since we had everything we wanted right there at the hotel. The bus service that takes hotel customers from the hotel to the town was wonderful and we greatly appreciate this service. I do wish though that it ran in the afternoon in addition to the evening. Since I am pregnant, we were not going out partying it down at night so the bus schedule was sometimes not in line with our schedule and activities we wanted to partake in.

The Andronis was also incredible. We were awestruck by the bell boys ability to carry ALL of our luggage in one swoop down the cliff to our room. Our room was incredible and we really enjoyed the in-suite sauna. The breakfast was to die for and we thought we had literally died and gone to heaven. Once again the hotel staff went above and beyond and they even offered us a free dessert, app and a virgin drink for me on our last night. Absolutely incredible! I cannot say enough good things about these resorts and their staff. I could go on and on and would be happy to provide you with a formal review of each if you would like.

The Catamaran tour was an adventure of a lifetime. There was a total of 8 of us on the boat which was a very nice group. My husband had a BLAST. Unfortunately, I got seasick and spent the majority of the time underneath in the cabin trying not to throw up but I can’t say enough how kind the crew was. The captain and his crew brought me hot lemon water, gave me blankets, and even made me a special dinner that would be more agreeable to a upset tummy. They went above and beyond making me feel comfortable and not embarrassed and kept assuring me that me feeling icky was actually a good sign for the baby (which it is J). On the way back home from the catamaran tour I once again was not feeling well and needed to ask the transport driver to pull over. After getting violently sick- the driver and all of the passengers were so nice to me and really made an embarrassing situation feel that much better.

I cannot say enough how kind and courteous the Greek people are. I have never met more kind folk in my life. Our trip was so amazing and I would suggest Greece and Travelive to anyone who asks. We are indeed hoping to go back again one day and will be reaching out to you again to help with our travel coordination.

Thank you so much for all that you have done and for making our babymoon/honeymoon so unforgettable. I have attached a few pictures here for you to see (it was hard to choose as we have hundreds!)

We are home and settling in. I wanted to contact you and say thank you for helping us plan a special anniversary trip. We enjoyed Greece so much, especially the people, culture, sights and of course the food! For our anniversary, we had dinner overlooking the sea at sunset.

All transfers and tours were professionally organized and efficient. Our tour guide in Athens, Marilena, was wonderful, the wine tour and catamaran trip in Santorini were highlights of our trip. Our favorite island was Santorini, the village of Oia and the best hotel was the Mykonos Grand. We were so impressed with the facilities, service, and the welcoming nature of the staff.

At the Andronis, Nadia really helped smooth over the initial confusion with the room. They were very accommodating and did compensate for the disruption of having to wait 4 hours for a room and then to move the next day again. Thank you for assisting there, the initial impression was not the best especially at a 5 star boutique hotel. I do think that if we had not vocalized our frustration, we would not have been offered what we did receive. No matter, the trip was great. The next time I would go back to Santorini and maybe Crete or Rhodes.

I am attaching a couple of photos. We will be in touch for our next trip and will definitely recommend Travelive

We're baaaackk!! Hey Tia! Back to reality :( We've been back for a few days now but I have just finally been able to upload our pics (which I will send to you by separate email).

First of all, both Carmelita and I would like to truly thank you and your team for arranging such a wonderful, stress-free, enjoyable and most memorable holiday... from the moment I clicked onto your website and filled in the info of our travel needs right down to our plane landing back home...everything worked out wonderfully! This trip was seriously one we both will never forget!

All three hotels were impeccable! Everyone was so friendly and accommodating to our needs throughout our stay. The locations were spot on! The views from our rooms were stunning! All travel arrangements between airports, hotels and ferry boats were great; Especially, our driver in Athens who seemingly turned out to be our "personal driver" to and from Athens airport and Amalia Hotel during both trips to Athens. I'm not sure whether that was set up or just a coincidence but we were both very glad to see a familiar face because he was truly very kind and helpful in giving us wonderful travel advice.

We had a great and informative tour guide, Marianne, in Athens who took us on that walking city tour which was awesome! Going into the spectacular museum and seeing and learning the history of Athens, walking through the Acropolis, taking the metro and strolling through the markets and shops... AMAZING!

Then onto the unbelievable resort and spa in Mykonos! The entire resort was unreal! Being completely white in structures and furniture, it felt clean, calm and quite posh! The entire staff was so very friendly! Carmelita and I spent a day just relaxing by the pool and then headed to the spa for a wonderful massage! The food was very good at their restaurants but what blew us away was the view from our table while having our meals... breathtaking! We also spent another day on a great city & island tour and we were even brave enough to take the local bus ourselves in and out of the city/to and from our resort!

And when we thought that it couldn't get any better, we landed on the island of Santorini!!! WOW!!! The view from Rocabella Hotel was absolutely STUNNING!!! Because the Bollywood film production was staying there but leaving the day after our arrival, the room they initially put us in was a bit under our expectations. The receptionist told us afterward that she noticed it on our faces and so offered to move us the next day when the Bollywood peeps left. And sure enough, when we returned from our trip to the city the following day, it was to our pleasant surprise that the room they moved us into was unbelievable! The sea view was unreal! Again, the restaurant view of the sunset was so truly breathtaking!! This resort is exactly how I pictured Greece would be... white cube homes and clear blue water! It really was just like paradise!

So needless to say, it was a very sad day when we had to leave :( The Greek islands are like no place we have ever been or seen before in our lives! This trip was definitely one of our dreams come true and certainly one of the most memorable birthdays I have ever had in all of my...uhm...40...uhm...years! And Travelive, especially with your help, was such a huge part of it!

So again, we both cannot thank YOU enough for helping us experience an amazing dream come true!!! :)

I am quite certain that we will be in touch again for another big trip next year!!!

'Till then Tia...take care,

Sharon & Carmelita

My husband and I just wanted to thank you (and your whole team) for a truly wonderful experience of our trip to Greece.

Everything went off without a hitch and was just perfect- all of our transfers were timely, personable and so nice to have coordinated; our tour guide in Athens was simply wonderful- we learned so much we never would have without having a dedicated person and it was great to have the individual attention vs. the large group tours; the hotels in Athens (where we were upgraded to a wrap around balcony!), Mykonos (had a HUGE deck) and Santorini (another great patio and truly amazing views) were all outstanding in terms of service and atmosphere.

The cruise ship was a very efficient way to get around and see many islands in a short time and embarking and disembarking in our preferred locations was simple and effective.

We really appreciate all of your efforts in the back and forth of our trip planning and will gladly recommend you and Travelive to anyone we know looking to plan a wonderful vacation to Greece (and of course, when we plan our return trip!).

Thanks very much,

Greece is an incredibly beautiful country in the Mediterranean. Surrounded by azure waters, this hot country is the perfect vacation destination for those who dream of lazing on the beach between dips in the balmy ocean.

Greece is also a historical and cultural land that can charm even the most jaded traveller. The museums are some of the most incredible in the world. You don’t even need to go indoors to experience the culture and history. You can simply stroll through the cobblestone streets.

So Greece is able to suit any kind of traveller. All you need to do is figure out what kind of amazing vacation it is that you’re after, and Greece will fit the bill. And it has its famous Greek Islands like Paxos and Ios.

When preparing for Greece, the contents of your suitcase will depend largely on the season you’re travelling in.

Some things you should be sure to pack, no matter the season, include a camera and good walking shoes. Since there is so much to explore in Greece, you want to be comfortable while doing it. And you definitely want to capture it all.

greek church seen through arches

From late June to early September Greece tends to sizzle. If you travel to Greece in summer, be sure to pack in plenty of light sundresses, shorts and tops. And a swimsuit of course!

A light scarf can be really helpful to keep the sun off your chest, and a hat goes a long way. Sandals and plenty of sunscreen are also highly recommended for this season. You won’t need anything too warm, as even the evenings are balmy.

greek islands part of 10 days in greece itinerary

Mid-September to November is the cooling down months of Greece. This is a wonderful time to visit if you’re wanting to explore the countryside. The colours are incredible, as everything turns different hues of red, orange and purple.

It’s also a little cooler, so you don’t have to worry about overheating as you trek through the country. During these months, think of light layers that you can increase during the mornings and evenings. The days are still quite warm, and you’ll certainly never freeze.

church in greece

December through to March are the coolest months. But fortunately, since it’s located in the Meditteranean, the temperatures never get too frigid. For this reason, Greece is a very popular vacation destination for other Europeans, even in the depths of winter.

This is also the rainy season here, so when you pack, be sure to include a waterproof jacket to keep you dry. If you get frizz when it rains, pack in a travel hairdryer . A good pair of boots will also be very handy, and jeans and long-sleeved tops.

Spring is a beautiful and popular season in Greece, as the days begin to lengthen and grow warmer. Flowers pop up across the country, and the trees grow their leaves back. All in all, April to early June are very pretty months to visit in.

However, if you’re wanting to spend a lot of time at the beach, avoid early spring, as it won’t yet be warm enough. When packing, be ready for anything. Shorts and long jeans, strappy tops and warm jerseys. Maybe even a swimsuit, if you want to brave a chilly ocean.

white buildings and ocean in santorini

The 2 largest airports in Greece are in Athens and Thessaloniki . This itinerary starts in Athens and ends in Thessaloniki, so you can experience both airports.

For most of this itinerary, you will be able to explore on foot or using some local transport like buses or taxis. If you are keen to explore more in the islands it may be a good idea to hire a car .

street art 2

In order to make the most of your trip to Greece, it’s good to have an outline of what you want to get up to. That way you won’t miss any of the sights you’re wanting to see, and you’ll be able to start picturing yourself there right this minute.

However, since making a detailed 10 day itinerary for your trip to Greece can really drain the fun out of holiday planning, here’s a suggested plan for you to work from.

white chapel in santorini

Since it’s easiest to fly into Athens, it’s best to start your trip here. Athens is the site of many iconic ancient Greek monuments and temples.

This start to your vacation will be all about culture, history and beauty. And you’ll have lots of energy to go out in the evening. Athens is known for its fun and vibrant nightlife, particularly in the summer.

acropolis 13

There are so many great things to see in Athens . On your first morning in Greece, head over to the Acropolis of Athens. This 5th-century BC hilltop temple monument is certainly a sight to behold. Or more correctly, sights. There are a number of incredible things to be seen here, and you should be ready to spend the whole morning exploring this iconic spot.

I would definitely suggest taking a guided tour of the Acropolis. It is a big area and it is easy to miss sites of interest. Also, most tours will include your ticket for the Acropolis and enable you to enter through the shortest line.

The ancient citadel is situated on a rocky outcrop over the city of Athens. So the views are spectacular, and the sight of the acropolis is not marred by a view of the modern city below it.

⇒ Pre book your skip the line ticket for the Acropolis

lycabettus view 2

While at the Acropolis, visit the Parthenon, which is the most important remaining monument from classical Greece. It’s also world-renowned, and you’re sure to have heard of it many times over. Be sure to take a few photos!

Just a 10-minute walk down the hill you will find the museum dedicated to the Acropolis. This is a great place to go to when you have the incredible architecture fresh in your imagination. Also, it’s the perfect opportunity to find a little restaurant as you go.

⇒ Beat the Queue and pre-book your ticket for the Acropolis & Museum

Klepsidra Cafe is one of the best options in the area. Greek food is incredible, and you’re sure to find the perfect thing to keep you energized as you explore the Acropolis Museum.

parthenon 1

After lunch it is time to climb another one of Athen’s hills – Mount Lycabettus. At 227 metres tall, the summit of Lycabettus is the highest point in central Athens and has some fantastic views of the city and of the Acropolis.

It is relatively easy to walk up the hill to the top of Mount Lycabettus. But if you’re all walked out after spending the morning at the Acropolis just take the easy to use cable car up and down the mountain.

lycabettus view 1

At the top of the mountain, you’ll find a restaurant with some great views as well as a classically Greek blue and white church St George.

lycabettus church

After all that walking you’ve earned a drink. Early evening head to Bar Kepameio and enjoy a spritz. Kapameio owns a souvlaki place next door called Elvis which is known to have some of the best souvlakis in Athens. It is definitely worth a visit as the souvlaki I enjoyed there was outstanding. Best of all you can place your order in Elvis and then enjoy your souvlaki at your table in the bar.

Taking a food tour is one of my favorite ways to explore a city and Athens is a great place for a food tour! I took my food tour with Viator and it was excellent. Our guide was local and very knowledgeable and we did everything from a greek honey tasting to visiting a koulouri bakery (the delicious sesame rings that you will see all over Greece) and visiting Athens Central Market for some amazing lamb that had been cooking in the sand for hours.

If you have a bit less time on your trip to Greece don’t miss my One Week in Greece Itinerary.

koulouri

Whether you take a food tour or not I would recommend a trip to Athens Central Market – particularly at lunch time. Many locals visit to buy their seafood and there is a great atmosphere. Plus it is home to restaurants and cafes.

athens market

Once you finish your food tour you won’t want to eat for a little while. It is the perfect time to explore the lovely little neighborhood of Anafiotika. This small area sits behind some of the key tourist sites in Athens. It was built in the 1800s when King Otto 1 wanted Athens to be rebuilt.

ana fiotika

Builders were brought in from the Cycladic island of Anafi. Whilst they were working on rebuilding Athens they built a small replica of their island near the Acropolis. Anafiotika means little Anafi. Only 45 buildings remain today but it is a lovely neighbourhood for a wander.

colourful streets of athens

Then continue to walk off your food tour by visiting the neighborhood of Plaka, home to cute streets and some great shopping.

athens street art

Hopefully by the time dinner rolls around you’ll be ready to eat again. I highly recommend Seychelles. Loved by locals, you’ll find unique twists on popular Greek dishes. It’s located in the Metaxourgeio neighborhood. Don’t forget to book ahead or you won’t get a table.

Greece has some fantastic options when it comes to where to sleep. Here are some boutique hotel options in Athens but if you’re looking to save a few dollars or are travelling on your own you might want to check out hostels in Greece.

Stay close to the Acropolis in the very stylish AthensWas boutique hotel. The AthensWas boutique hotel has fantastic views of the Acropolis (ask for a room on one of the higher floors) – particularly from the terrace – and it is in a fantastic neighborhood with loads of great restaurants and shops.

The Stanley Hotel has a fantastic location next to Metaxourgeio Station, making it easy to get everywhere in Athens. They also have a fantastic rooftop pool and bar that has views of the Acropolis. Now it’s time to head off to the Greek islands to get a little more sun, sand and beautiful sights. These stunning islands are world-renowned as a dreamy destination. Getting to Santorini is easy, so we’ll start there. And you can opt to stay at a luxury vacation rental on Santorini.

Santorini is one of the most picturesque places in the world. The white buildings are set off perfectly by the deep blue Aegean sea below them.

While your days on this island can consist mainly of coffee shops, gelateria’s, restaurants and bars (yes, the food and drink is that good), a little sightseeing can go a long way. Especially when it’s coupled with some beautiful swimming and tanning opportunities.

The walk between Thira and Oia is about 10 kilometres so will take 2-2 1/2 hours. It is a stunning path along the caldera. You will head up and down quite a bit so make sure you’re wearing sensible shoes.

➡️ Book a guided walk between Thira and Oia

Did you know that for centuries the economy of the Greek Island of Santorini was built on wine? I was very surprised to discover that this was the case. When I first heard about wineries on Santorini and its famous assyrtiko grape I thought wine from such a warm climate can’t possibly taste good. I am delighted to tell you that I was completely wrong.

domaine sigalas glass

The perfect way to experience the wine of Santorini is through a guided tour which includes a driver. Several companies run wine tours on the island.

Sunset wine tours generally start around 4pm and finish about 8pm. Most tours will either pick up and drop off guests at their hotels or a spot that is very close to their accommodation.

Each wine tour company works with a number of wineries. The majority of tours visit three wineries. Visits include a tasting (of course) and a generous platter of local delicacies. The food served on the tour is sufficient to cover dinner.

Spend the day getting to know the city by foot. Meander down the winding lanes and pop into the cafes and shops that you come across. Sometimes not having a set path can expose the best parts of a new place.

In the afternoon, join a small-group luxury catamaran cruise. You’ll get to see more of the island, swim in volcanic hot springs, and snorkel in the clear blue waters.

On my first trip to Santorini, I stayed at the Anteliz Suites in Fira and absolutely loved it. This charming Santorini boutique hotel is perched on the top of Fira. As such it has the most amazing views of the Santorini sunset. And a large deck area designed to help you to enjoy that view.

On my second trip to Santorini I stayed in Oia in the north of the island. Mr and Mrs White Santorni is a charming boutique hotel sits on the caldera and has fantastic views. It is very modern in design but combined with the traditional style of the island.

mr and mrs white pool

We stayed in a mezzanine room that had a bathroom and sofa bed on the mezzanine. But the highlight was the absolutely massive terrace that was part of the room with views straight out onto the caldera and the Santorini sunset.

mr and mrs white santorini room

The design theme is black and white which which works very well on this often blue and white and oh so bright island. Breakfast is served above the main reception and also provides fantastic views. The buffet includes hot food and I highly recommend the spanokopitas. Greek or traditional style omelettes are also available.

mr and mrs white breakfast

The hotel has a pool area and a second area for a smaller pool and jacuzzi. It is a slight maze of rooms and arches and outdoor corridors but this all gives a nice sense of privacy. The staff were very friendly – particularly at breakfast where they remembered our coffee order each morning!

mr and mrs white

Location wise, Mr and Mrs White is perfect. It is a quite flat approx 10 minute walk into the heart of Oia. There are quite a few boutique hotels within Oia but they all looked like they had quite small rooms and of course no full size pool. Plus Oia can get quite loud. Mr and Mrs White was the perfect mix of being close to the action but removed enough for privacy.

Next up is a few days in one of Europe’s most fun summer party destinations. This is an island where you can sleep in late. There’s no need to feel guilty about not making the most of your days, as it’s your nights that will be getting the attention.

After you wake up late and have a lovely lazy morning, spend the afternoon exploring the nearby islands . It’s a beautiful way to spend a day, especially since you can sip on unlimited drinks and start your Mykonos buzz, before watching the sun set over the island.

Next, head to Lola’s Bar-Cafe to kick the night off with a delicious cocktail. The bar has a warm and welcoming atmosphere and if you go alone, you’ll leave with friends.

These extremely popular beaches will have you really feeling the party spirit. They might not be your traditional idea of paradise, but they certainly do offer a great time.

During the day, enjoy basking on the beach. But it’s during the night when things really heat up. Bars play loud music that carries across the sand, and massive clubs boast international DJs and almost unending hours.

Once you’re all partied out, take a flight to the beautiful Halkidiki Peninsula for some more beach time and sightseeing. The best airport to fly into is in Thessaloniki – you’ll be at the start of the Halkidiki Peninsula in just over an hour.

The first finger is the peninsula of Kassandra. This is the region that is closest to Thessaloniki and it is the most developed of the three.

Start your day in Nea Fokea. This bustling resort town has a very picturesque harbor. It is also home to Agios Pavios, a Byzantine Tower built on a hill in 1407. The tower is 17 meters high.

Nea Fokea byzantine tower

After you’ve gone up high, go down low and visit St Paul’s Holy Water. This tiny chapel will require you to literally bend over to visit its 20-meter-long corridor that ends with a small basin where the holy water was collected.

Nea Fokea chapel

Little Afytos is built on a rock and filled with cute houses made from local stones and amazing views of the Toroneos Gulf. It may well be the prettiest village in Kassandra and even all of Halkidiki. This is where to shop in Kassandra as there are many lovely boutiques.

afitos

Plus head down to Afitos beach and you’ll see a strip of beautiful seafood restaurants with awesome views. I also loved the olive oil cans that the town has turned into their own street art – they look like little flower pots.

The delightful main square of Afitos is home to the town’s Cultural Museum. This charming museum recreates a home in the area from the late 1800s. Specifically, the house dates back to 1889 when three brothers owned it.

For a fantastic seafood feast with an amazing view head to Kavouras seafood restaurant in Kallithea (Kavouras means crab). The owner is a fisherman and he literally heads out into the lovely waters of Kallithea with a spear and then brings back what he catches. If you ask he’ll even show you!

kavouras squid

The Sanctuary of Zeus Ammon was literally stumbled upon when the ground was broken to build a hotel. That hotel is now next door. The Sanctuary of Zeus Ammon is the closest to the water of any archaeological site in Greece. The location plus the ruins found suggest that the site was some health spa/hammam or even hospital of sorts.

zeus ammon

The site dates back to the latter half of the 4th century and was one of Ancient Greece ‘s most important sanctuaries dedicated to the father of the gods. There are some stunning views out to the sea from the top of the site.

The beaches on the east side of the peninsula are more developed and have far more facilities than those on the west. The tip of the island is mountainous with a small number of beaches.

Hroussos was my favorite beach in Kassandra. It’s a small cove of light golden sand. It comes with beach chairs and umbrellas but doesn’t feel overly done. The area around it is set up for holiday camping.

Hroussos beach

Or visit the beautiful white sandy Kallithea beach just near where you’ve enjoyed your seafood lunch.

kallithea beach

As the sun drops, head to the southwest of the island and Loutra Beach for beautiful sunset over the Aegean Sea.

If you only do one activity while in Halkidiki make it a boat cruise around Athos . Athos is a UNESCO site and home to 20 monasteries and around 2000 monks. This has been the case for over 2,000 years. It is a self-governed monastic state, similar to the Vatican.

athos

Most of Athos is off-limits to women (unless you are the Virgin Mary, to whom the state is dedicated). Men can visit but must book ahead. The area can accommodate up to 100 people a day.

However, if you are male and would like to go to Athos when you are there you will literally have to live like a monk as monasteries are the only option for a bed and meal.

xenophontos monastery

The monasteries of Athos are built into the rock or at the bottom of the mountain and are stunning. St Panteleimon Monastery is the largest of all the monasteries and is absolutely stunning with its green roofs. Each of the monasteries is unique and quite magnificent.

Cruises to Mount Athos leave from Ouranoupoulis port generally twice a day. The cruise takes three hours.

➡️ Book Your Mount Athos Cruise

If you’ve taken the morning cruise to Athos your return to Ouranoupoulis will be perfectly timed for lunch. I would recommend booking lunch at Lemoniadas for your return. This delightful restaurant sits on the beach and features outstanding local produce from Athos – and local recipes.

Lemoniadis

There are loads of beautiful beaches on the Sithonia peninsula, but Kavourotrypes beach is absolutely stunning and was my personal favorite. It is a cove with beach chairs and a bar and pine trees that reach to the shore. Stunning colours but best of all are the views of nearby Mount Athos.

kavourotrypes beach

The Blue Bay Hotel in Kassandra is located just south of Athytos and has fantastic views over Athytos beach and the Aegean. Like many of the hotels in Halkidiki, it has a lot of space for enjoying the outdoors and easy access to the beach. There are two large pools and a beautifully situated outdoor restaurant.

Anthemus Sea Hotel in Sithonia could be one of the largest hotels I have ever stayed in. This is a hotel that has everything. Once you check in most guests will need a buggy to get to their rooms as the site covers 38,000 square meters.

There is an underground shopping mall that also has a spa and kids playrooms so you are covered for all-weather and shopping needs.

Greece’s second-biggest city also claims to be its foodiest – the only way to find out if this is true is to head there and eat for yourself! I must confess I spent quite a bit of my time in Thessaloniki eating as well there. There is some great food to be consumed.

However, there is much more to this eclectic, busy, vibrant city than just awesome food. You’ll stumble over a church from the Ottoman Empire or some edgy street art every few steps. And there is much to experience on the city’s fantastic boardwalk which is five kilometres long.

Thessaloniki is home to 1.3 million people, and 120,000 inhabitants are students. As always, student cities tend to have an extra air of vibrancy and buzz and Thessaloniki is no exception.

white tower of thessaloniki 3

Start your day in Thessaloniki with a guided walking tour . This is one of my favorite ways to explore a city. Thessaloniki is busy and bustling with many small streets and historic sites all over the place so it is helpful to have someone to help you explore the key sites.

The walking tour will take up your morning. Next up is lunch and of course it should be gyros.

If you’re looking for what may be the best souvlaki in Thessaloniki then head to 22 Souvlakia . It’s located on Aristotelous Square and just a stone’s throw from the sea. There is a great outdoor seating area on the square.

pork souvlaki at 22

And wow the food!!! We were brought out glistening sticks of protein after stick. The highlights for me were the pork gyros (its signature dish) and the chicken gyros. And the chips are sensational – and should of course be placed in the pita and eaten with the meat. And don’t miss the puffy perfect squeaky halloumi.

After lunch spend the afternoon exploring Thessaloniki’s many churches and roman sites. Don’t miss:

  • Agia Sofia Church
  • Roman Agora
  • Agios Dimitrios Church
  • Aristotelous Square
  • Panagia Chalkeon Church

Thessaloniki Panagea Chalkein

For dinner head to Kapani market and face the difficult task of choosing a restaurant! I highly recommend Stou Mistou which is near the olive stands. Stou Mistou has a small menu because it changes daily based on fresh ingredients. Everything they serve is local and they are best known for their fantastic seafood pasta.

stou mistou seafood pasta

Start the day exploring Thessaloniki’s 5 kilometre long boardwalk. Start off at Thessaloniki’s most famous site, the White Tower of Thessaloniki.

The White Tower of Thessaloniki was actually a prison. Ottoman Turks built it in the late 15th century. The tower has been known by many names over the centuries including the Lion’s Tower, the Blood Tower and the Janissary Tower.

The White Tower took its current name in the late 19th century after one of its prisoners painted it white in exchange for freedom.

white tower of thessaloniki and trees

Today, the tower consists of six floors. Each floor covers an element of the history of the tower and Thessaloniki. The top of the tower contains a small restaurant and a fantastic view. And don’t miss the nearby Alexander the Great Monument.

Next up is exploring the Nea Paralia. The new waterfront of Nea Paralia is a 3.5 km stretch along the sea that was regenerated in recent times. Like the rest of the Thessaloniki waterfront, it is a wonderful place to walk, cycle, and people-watch. This part of the waterfront is also home to some fantastic contemporary art.

umbrellas on thessaloniki seafront

The Zongopoulous sculpture “Umbrellas” is 13 metres high and most photogenic at sunset. This is also the best time to photograph Pavlos Vasiliadis’ “Moon” sculpture which was installed in the sea by divers and looks like an illusion.

thessaloniki boardwalk 2.

Head to Thessaloniki institution Cafe Le Monde. Cafe le Monde is a beautiful European-style cafe with one of the best locations in town on the Thessaloniki waterfront. Tables sprawl onto the boardwalk from the art deco-style building. This is the perfect place to stop and enjoy coffee Greek style. That means slowly and over several hours with lots of conversation.

cafe le monde cake

Spend your final afternoon in Greece enjoying some greek wine. Although Domaine Florian is a Greek winery it is run by a German. Florian moved to Greece in 2002 and began making organic wine in 2011. The winery has won many awards – mostly for its sauvignon, syrah, and chardonnay.

In terms of whites, we tasted an assyrtiko blend (my favorite Greek grape), malvasia, sauvignon blend, chardonnay aged in stainless steel, and a chardonnay aged in oak (my personal favorite wine at Domaine Florian).

domain florian vineyards

Florian also has a lovely dry rose wine, and the Syrah won all those awards for a reason.

domain florian wine

Domaine Florian is about a 30-minute drive from Thessaloniki. Contact Domaine Florian directly to organize a wine tasting and/or tour of its vineyards.

For your final night in Greece, enjoy a more luxurious version of classic Greek food at Canteen.

Canteen is modern Thessaloniki cuisine at its best. There were several highlights for me. Whilst I was in Greece I became quite obsessed with Dakos salad. Dakos salad is essentially a Greek salad with rusks and when it is done well it is awesome. Canteen does a good dakos.

The halloumi with blueberries, pistachio, and crispbread were also brilliant as was the risotto with black pork and aubergine.

I had a lovely stay at Domotel Olympia. This modern boutique hotel has a fantastic location – it is about a 10-minute walk to the seafront, Kapani market, the Roman Agora and many of the other key sites in town.

thessaloniki domotel hotel

The building which houses Domotel Olympia dates back to 1929 but the interior is all modern contemporary design utilizing light shades. My double standard room had a simple stylish design aesthetic with its shiny floorboards and clean lines. The bathroom isn’t huge but has everything you could need in a stay.

My room also came with a good-sized balcony and two chairs. The staff was very friendly and helpful and the breakfast was a good buffet offering. Best of all the breakfast buffet featured lots of koulouri and other local products so you can go local during your stay! Domotel Olympia also has a restaurant offering dinner and a bar.

Armed with this ultimate itinerary, your greek vacation will have it all. The beaches, galleries, museums, nightlife and incredible food are enough to inspire even the most jaded traveller.

Most of Greece’s attractions can be enjoyed at any time of the year. However, to make the most of Greece, you’ll want to spend lazy days at the beach, and exciting days cruising across the ocean. So late spring, summer and early autumn are definitely the best seasons to visit.

Dream Vacation to Greece

Please look no further for the trip of your dreams. Dorcas Travel Agency took care of every single detail. I mean EVERY detail. Irene and her team are incredible. Our family traveled from Florida to Greece in April 2023. We went to Rhodes, Crete, Santorini, Athens, Delphi, and Meteora. Our family of 4 adults travelled in private luxury vehicles, spent our nights in private luxury villas, and boutique hotels, and private guided tours of the beautiful ancient ruins, cities, towns, and countryside villages. We specifically requested to stay in the historic districts, and we were not disappointed with our accommodations. Irene and her team looked after every small detail. We were particularly interested in the Jewish Heritage of Greece and the Aegean Islands. Irene arranged private tour guides who spoke very clear English, and who had knowledge of the Jewish Heritage of the places we visited. Some of our favorite places and things were: Meteora: to say amazing does this place no service. It is just breathtaking and should be a world wonder. Our tour guide had incredible and in-depth knowledge of the monasteries/nunneries. She was very patient with us as there were very many stairs at all the Monasteries. Although I am not Orthodox Christian in my beliefs, these structures sitting atop monoliths were impressive. Chania, Crete: This is a beautiful seaside city with a rich and ancient heritage. The food was incredible, and the people friendly. There is much to see and do, or just stroll along the promenade and restaurant hop. While visiting Crete, Irene arranged for us to tour a Olive Oil Production and plantation. The tour was so wonderful, don't miss out on trying the food at their little cafe. Athens: History, history, history. If you love ancient history, Christian history, Greek mythological history, you will LOVE Athens!!!!! So much to see and do!!!! You will not run out of ancient sites to tour. If you are a museum lover, as I am, then do not miss the Acropolis Museum. New, modern, and WOW! Lastly, I would be remiss not to give a special mention to some of the amazing team members with Dorcas Travel who made our stay especially seamless: Odysseaus, thank you for everything. Thank you for meeting us at the airport in Athens, making sure we were well cared for, and checking up on us throughout our trip. Demetrius, thank you for all the miles you drove us. Teaching us all the history of your beautiful and ancient country. You were always courteous, accommodating, and a real pleasure to spend so much time with. It was obvious by your conversations with us how much you love your country and heritage. It was such a pleasure to meet you. Traveling with our family is always complicated, and Dorcas helped us with all the bumps in the road. We are forever grateful for our experience with this company and would recommend to anyone looking for a highly reputable company who delivers what they say they will. Irene and her team are absolutely, hands-down, the best!

Dear leah s, In our country we use to say that "detail makes the difference". This is exactly what we will continue doing, because this is our key to success ! We, at Dorcas Travel, believe that your happiness and well-being is our major success. Our philosophy goes beyond the basics needs of peoples' vacation such as swimming, accommodation and food. We cultivate values such as safety and most important, stress-free travel from the moment you arrive, until your departure back home. Thank you so much again for this amazing review! With our warmest regards, Dorcas Travel team

Irene and her team were amazing! The trip was perfectly planned based on what we had requested to experience. We had knowledgeable guides for our tours! They made the trip very personalized and convenient. It was an incredible!

Dear Val D, Thank you so much for taking the time to leave an excellent rating. We really appreciate it. We look forward to seeing you again soon. From the entire Dorcas Travel team, Our warmest regards,

Irene created a wonderful trip for my husband, oldest son, and I. We had never been to Greece before, and each of us had different things we wanted to get out of the trip. Irene was able to balance us out and create a wonderful trip we will remember forever. We started in athens and sights and cities a drive away from there. Then went up north to Meteora - which was my favorite! So amazing. From there we flew to crete to finish off our trip. We had a great driver with us the whole time and that made a big difference for us too. I would 100% recommend Dorcas Travel to friends and family.

Dear brooke d, We can’t thank you enough for your kind words ! Your review means a lot to us and lets us know we’re on the right track! Looking forward to seeing you again soon and thank you once again for being such wonderful guests! From the whole Dorcas Travel team, Our warmest regards,

Dorcas arranged a wonderful guided ~4 week vacation for us to Greece and Istanbul. We spent the first 4 days in the heart of Athens, taking several walking tours with excellent local guides. We then spent 15 days in the Aegean islands of Naxos, Santorini, and Crete. Our experience on each island was wonderful, and our guides were all personable, caring, and knowledgeable. We completed our time in Greece with a 5-day driving tour of mainland sites. Our driver took excellent care of us and we had more wonderful experiences. The final part of our journey was 3 busy and exciting days in Istanbul; the one guide who accompanied us for all 3 days was excellent. Travel logistics were handled very smoothly, and as noted several times above, our guides were excellent.

Dear Phil P, We’d like to thank you again for taking the time to write this review of your vacation in Greece & Turkey. All feedback is highly appreciated, as it enables us here at Dorcas Travel to further develop our services. We’re very grateful for guests like you and hope to welcome you again in a future to Greece ! From Dorcas Travel team Best regards

Top Notch. This is the second time we have used Dorcas Travel for our Greek Island vacations. Irene heads up a first class agency that has her travelers firmly placed as their priority. If you want a no -hassle trip then this is the place to start your dream vacation. We chose to travel the Greek Islands and Dorcas made suggestions for our itinerary, made all the arrangements once it was agreed, and even reacted speedily to any last minute changes we requested. Our vacation was seamless, all we needed to do was sit back, relax, and enjoy each island and the different options that each offered. We will be returning in 2024 and will definately be contacting Irene for guidance as to our destinations knowing that our every need will be handled. We seldom write recommendations as everyone's vacation aspirations are different but we can sincerely endorse Dorcas. You will not go wrong using their full-service, individually-driven , highly-motivated agency.

Dear Roy C, it’s always a pleasure seeing you. Thanks so much for your review and good vibes. You’ve always taken the time to show us your kindness. We’re happy that you’re happy, and we’re looking forward to your next visit. Hurry back! Dorcas Travel team

7. My Life in Ruins

My Life in Ruins is a rom-com starring Canadian Nia Vardalos, who wrote and starred in  My Big Fat Greek Wedding , the highest-grossing rom-com of all time.

In My Life in Ruins, Vardalos plays Georgia, an unhappy Greek-American professor who is forced to work as a tour guide in Greece after losing her local teaching job. Upset about how her life has turned out, she hates the gig and how her tour groups seem disinterested in Greek history.

My Life in Ruins, released in 2009, was filmed in Spain and on location in Greece. In fact, it was the first American movie that was allowed to film at the Acropolis , the ancient citadel overlooking Athens. It’s one of the movie’s most touching scenes, making it worth any effort it took to get permission. Parts of the movie were also filmed at historic sites like Olympia  and Delphi .

8. The Swimmers

The Swimmers is a touching 2022 film that tells the inspiring true story of Yusra and Sara Mardini, portrayed by Nathalie and Manal Issa (who are actually also sisters!). These two teenage Syrian sisters were training as competitive swimmers, with the dream of making it to the Olympics, before they had to flee their war-torn home as refugees in 2015.

Not only is this movie a powerful portrayal of bravery, determination, and the fight to survive, but it’s also the heartfelt story of two normal sisters who make mistakes, argue, and face regular teenage issues while helping each other to overcome extraordinary circumstances.

10. 3oo Spartans

While the 2006 movie “300” made the battle of the Spartans against the Persian army famous, it was actually inspired by another movie, the 1962 film “The 300 Spartans”. This “sword and sandal” picture was directed by Rudolph Maté and starred Richard Egan, David Farrar, and Diane Baker, among others. It’s worth noting that the film did not have internationally recognized stars, certainly not in the same way the later version of the movie had with Gerard Butler.

The story of the 300 focuses on the Battle of Thermopylae, where the Persian army led by King Xerxes was approaching Sparta. King Leonidas (played by Egan) led 300 fierce Spartan soldiers to defend a narrow pass in the battle.

“The 300 Spartans” was filmed in many locations across Greece, although it certainly looked different in 480 BC during the battle compared to the 1960s, and especially today. For example, the movie production was not able to shoot in Thermopylae because the pass the Spartans defended doesn’t exist anymore!

11. Before Midnight

Before Midnight is a romantic drama released in 2013, directed by Richard Linklater. The movie is the continuation of the trilogy Before Sunrise (1995) and Before Sunset (2004). Before Midnight is an emotionally charged and thought-provoking movie that will make you reflect on your own relationships. With its beautiful setting in Greece and its powerful performances by Hawke and Delpy, it is sure to leave a lasting impression.

The Inbetweeners Movie which follows four schoolboys on their first lads holiday to Malia, Greece, was a huge hit when it was released in 2011. Filmed on location in both Britain and Malia , Crete , this classic comedy was a hit! Following the popular series “The Inbetweeners”, the film follows 4 boys Simon, William, Jay, and Neil on their first holiday abroad together. The funny chaos and adventures the boys get up to in the original series certainly follow them to Greece.

The film was a success for all involved, particularly the actors – Simon Bird, Joe Thomas, Blake Harrison, James Buckley, Greg Davies, Anthony Head, and Belinda Stewart-Wilson. Malia is considered one of the top party destinations in Greece so is very popular with anyone who loves the good nightlife.

Penelope Cruz portrays Pelagia, the intelligent and headstrong daughter of a local physician, who initially despises the occupying forces but gradually warms to Captain Corelli. As time progresses, the true consequences of the war begin to unfold. “Captain Corelli’s Mandolin” takes audiences on a journey of love and war, immersing them in the enchanting,  sun-drenched landscapes of the Greek islands  and the magical allure of the Mediterranean.

16. My family and other Animals

Regarding movies filmed in Greece, one that certainly can’t be forgotten is My Family and Other Animals. Released in 2005, this movie is based on the autobiography of Gerald Durrell, a prominent British naturalist, and zookeeper who lived on Corfu for five years of his childhood.

The film subsequently takes viewers on a journey through stories on the Greek island of Corfu in the 1930s. As the family begins a new life in Corfu after leaving England, it illustrates Durrell’s deep affection for nature and the various goings of the Durrell family.

My Family and Other Animals features several prominent actors that played the role of various Durrell family members. These include BAFTA-winning actress Imelda Staunton, Game of Thrones actor Eugene Simon, and Downton Abbey star Matthew Goode.  Something that one can’t help but notice while watching the film is the stunning scenery from the filming locations chosen across Corfu Island. Between the charming villages, beautiful waters, and beaches that serve as the backdrops of scenes, it’s no wonder why  Corfu is such a perfect vacation destination .

17. Glass Onion

While Greece is renowned for its popular islands like  Santorini , there is an unexplored gem called Spetses that remains off the beaten path. It is on this captivating island that the murder mystery movie “Glass Onion” was filmed. Glass Onion is the thrilling sequel to the 2019 film “Knives Out,” with Daniel Craig’s beloved detective Benoit Blanc making a triumphant return. However, this time he’s joined by a fresh ensemble cast including Edward Norton, Kathryn Hahn, Kate Hudson, Dave Bautista, Janelle Monáe, and more.

Set in Greece, the film follows Miles Bron (Edward Norton), an enigmatic tech genius and billionaire, as he invites his closest friends to a remote island for a weekend getaway. They have no idea that his staged murder mystery game will quickly turn deadly, and only Detective Benoit Blanc will be able to decipher the vacation nightmare that unfolds.
