Exhibition: DeepDive
December 3, 2022-January 28, 2023
Reception with the Artists: Saturday, December 3, 2022, from 5 to 7 PM
The Bath House Cultural Center presents DeepDive, and art exhibition that showcases recent art works by East Dallas artists who are part of the White Rock Lake Artists Studio Tour. The exhibition runs from December 3, 2022 to January 28, 2023.
DeepDive highlights the amazing diversity and talent of artists who have participated regularly in the White Rock Lake Artists Studio Tour, a long-lived event that has been a favorite for many local art lovers. The Bath House is hosting the exhibition to celebrate the rich history and enduring tradition of the tour and to reaffirm the strong relationship that the center has developed with the tour and East Dallas artists over the years.
The first WRLA Studio Tour was organized in 1992 by artists Marty Ray, Michael Obranovich and David Hickman. From the very beginning, the goal of the tour has been to introduce the public to local artists and invite them to visit the unique spaces where they create their work. The studios are located within residential neighborhoods near White Rock Lake. With help of a steering committee of artists, Marty continues to lead and coordinate the event, which has become a well-loved activity for anybody who enjoys seeing the arts thrive in our community.
DeepDive includes artwork by Chuck Armstrong, Lynn Armstrong, Matt Bagley, Byron Black, Rebecca Boatman, John Campbell, Glo Coalson, Nancy Cole, Dan Collins, Rebecca Collins, Marc Dominus, Elizabeth Dryden, David Farrell, Annie Foster, Susan Giller, Linda Gilpin, Jim Hastings, Jamie Heavey, Deana Hinchcliff, Sigrun Hukill, Jeff Hukill, Doug Jochum, Susan Jochum, Clara Johnson, Larry Paul Jones, Robyn Jorde, Judith LaPlante, Chris Lyons, Samuel Chuck McCarter, Laurie McClurg, Laura Moore, Beverly Ann (BAM) Moore, Sharon Neel-Bagley, Michael O’Keefe, Alice O’Leary, Richard Ray, Marty Ray, GG Reid, Sharon Shero, Janice Somerville, T Stone, Silvia Thornton, Cecilia Thurman, and Lin Trinkle.
Each year, the tour takes place in the middle of October. For more information about the tour, visit https://www.whiterockartists.com .

Tour lets guests experience artists working
By whiterocklakeweeklyadmin on September 27, 2023 Comments Off on Tour lets guests experience artists working
By Sharon Shero
This October, the White Rock Lake Artists Studio Tour is celebrating 30 years of East Dallas artists’ opening their workplace doors to the public. With such an auspicious milestone, it is opportune to highlight the Tour’s founder, Marty Ray.
A Dallas native, Ray’s artistic talent was nurtured from early childhood by her parents and more formally throughout high school at Samuel High School, East Texas State University, eventually earning her MFA from Southern Methodist University. During these years, she concentrated on honing her painting and printmaking skills.
The U.S. Department of Defense hired Ray to teach high school art in Tokyo, where she assumed full advantage of traveling throughout Asia. In the Far East, Ray found inspiration in its culture and arts, which dovetailed with her nascent interest in working in clay. She discovered she could combine her many artistic interests, painting, drawing (incising), sculpting, shaping pots and experimenting with glaze chemistry into a single medium. Notably, she independently studied under Octavio Medellin among other Dallas art luminaries.
Ray shared her intrigue with clay and glaze with her students, initially at Bryan Adams High School in East Dallas and ultimately at North Lake College where she focused on ceramics, sculpture and 3D design until her retirement as a Professor Emerita of Art.
Considering her expansive accomplishments, accolades and travels, Ray avers that “the White Rock Lake Artists’ Studio Tour is one of my proudest achievements and is an extension of being a teacher.” To this day, the Tour provides students, educators and art lovers opportunities to experience how artists work in their creative environments, in a variety of art forms and studio settings, dispersed through the White Rock Lake neighborhoods.
Having led the Tour for the past 29 years, Ray has passed the baton to fellow artist Sharon Shero, so that Ray may continue pursuing her ever burgeoning artistic interests, philanthropy and art community obligations. Marty may have stepped away from leading the Tour (although she will always be its muse), but she has miles to go before she sleeps!
Married to Richard Ray, an estimable painter in his own right, they have collaborated on art projects and shared their Barbaree home for an impressive 52 years. This autumn, you may visit Marty and Richard at their expansive studios during the tour October 14 and 15. Beyond the tour, Marty’s work is available at her representative gallery, Craighead-Green in Dallas.

Architect: Donald Speck Built: 1960
In 1960, on a hillside facing White Rock Lake, architect Donald Speck created an iconic and enduring residence for the Topper family. Framed by broad single-story ranch-style homes, Speck inventively carved away the hillside and continued the upper band of windows down the exterior wall to provide a hidden, daylight filled lower level for the bedrooms for the large family.

This 1963 mid-century modern home was designed and built by its original owners, an engineer and his wife who graduated from UT Southwestern Medical School and was in her Neurology Fellowship at Baylor Medical Center. The current owners have had the privilege of meeting one of the original owners and members of the family who lived in the home from the 1970s through 2014.

Architect: Ju-Nel, Lyle Rowley and Jack Wilson Built: 1963
The White Rock Home Tour was introduced in 2006 by Hexter parents inspired to share their wonderful Ju-Nel homes to raise funds for their neighborhood school. On our 15th annual tour, we are so excited to reveal a newly renovated fabulous Ju-Nel home!
Built: 1961
On first glance this wonderful mid-century modern home is mysteriously discreet. A calm and thoughtfully composed front lawn alludes to the cool, minimalist sensibility of these homeowners and their stewardship of this special home.
