Foreigner will try to find out what love is one last time, with the veteran arena rock heroes announcing a farewell tour for 2023.

The run is set to kick off July 6 at the Ameris Bank Amphitheatre in Atlanta, with dates scheduled through the summer, wrapping Sept. 3 at the PNC Bank Arts Center in Holmdel, New Jersey. Eighties favorites and perennial weekend warriors Loverboy will provide support throughout the trek.

Tickets for all shows are set to go on sale Nov. 18. Complete information is available on Foreigner ’s website .

As Billboard reports, next summer’s tour will just be the first part of Foreigner’s long goodbye. The group will announce additional North American and overseas dates soon, with plans to tour through the end of 2024.

Foreigner formed in New York City back in 1976 when Jones linked up with former King Crimson multi-instrumentalist, Ian McDonald, and vocalist Lou Gramm. The group released their self-titled debut in 1977, scoring a pair of career-defining singles from the start: “Feels Like the First Time” and “Cold as Ice.”

The group’s success continued through the late Seventies and into the Eighties with hits like “Hot Blooded,” “Double Vision,” “Urgent,” and “Juke Box Hero.” In 1984 they finally notched their first and only Number One in the United States with the iconic power ballad, “I Want to Know What Love Is.”

Foreigner

Forty-five years after it felt like the first time for Foreigner, the veteran rock troupe is planning to tour for the very last time.

The Rock Hall of Fame 2022 Induction Ceremony: 10 Best Moments

The band, formed during 1976 by British guitarist Mick Jones, will launch its Historic Farewell Tour next July 6 in Alpharetta, Ga., with 32 U.S dates running through Sept. 3 in Holmdel, N.J. Loverboy will be opening. More legs, both domestic and overseas, are on tap through the end of 2024.

“Foreigner is a completely revitalized band with a whole new energy that has won the hearts of our fans all over the world, and I want to go out while the band is still at the top of its game,” Jones, 77, tells Billboard . “I had the idea that was to become Foreigner back in 1974, and I was 30 years old at the time. By the end of our farewell tour, over 50 years will have passed, and that’s a long time to be on the road.”

Trending on Billboard

“We’re at an era in life where a lot of bands from the ’70s are right on the ragged edge of still being able to do shows. I see other musicians sometimes that I go, ‘Wow, that was disappointing,’ and I don’t want to be someone that other people say that about. I want to do this band the way it’s supposed to be, and when it’s not like that I don’t want to be doing it.”

Since its formation, Foreigner has released nine studio albums — five of them multi-platinum, plus the 1982 hits set Records — and sold more than 50 million records worldwide. It’s also notched nine top 10 singles on the Billboard Hot 100, including rock radio staples such as “Feels Like the First Time,” “Hot Blooded,” “Double Vision,” “Urgent” and the chart-topping power ballad “I Want to Know What Love Is.” More than two dozen members have been part of the roster over the years, and members of the first two lineups made a series of guest appearances with the current lineup during 2017 and 2018.

Foreigner has a number of concerts scheduled this month and also in the spring, prior to the farewell tour launch — including March and April residencies at the Venetian in Las Vegas. Hansen adds that while Foreigner is calling a halt to touring it may not go away entirely. “I’m sure there might be the odd or occasional things we do,” the frontman says. “You can never say never about things. But for me this (tour) is it. It’s not like one of these, like we’ve seen, ploys to get people out to shows.”

Both Hansen and Jeff Pilson, Foreigner’s bassist since 2004, say that Foreigner – whose last studio album, Can’t Slow Down , came out in 2009 — may release some new music in the near future, too. “There’s a whole bunch of stuff in different stages of completion, so that’s not outside the realm of possibility,” Hansen predicts. Pilson says that Jones has been writing material with Marti Frederiksen that he expects the band to work on at some point.

“There’s probably four I’m aware of that are close, and some other snippets,” Pilson says. “Chances are there won’t be a whole new (album). I can see some new songs being added to some kind of a package or some kind of a single. I definitely see some new material coming, hopefully within the next year. We don’t need new material, but it’s always nice to have.”

Facebook icon

KICKS OFF JULY 6TH IN ATLANTA, GA

Tickets go on sale november 18 th at livenation.com.

“I Want To Know What Love Is”, “Cold As Ice,” “Hot Blooded,” “Juke Box Hero,” “Urgent,” and no less than five more Top 10 hits. Today, FOREIGNER, the band behind these iconic songs announced the launch of their Farewell Tour.

The tour is set to launch on July 6, 2023, at Atlanta’s Ameris Bank Amphitheatre, the area’s largest outdoor venue. For the first leg of the US Live Nation tour, FOREIGNER will be joined by LOVERBOY, one of the 80’s biggest hit-makers. The spectacular show will thrill audiences with stellar performances of more than 20 combined chart-topping songs. Tickets go on sale on November 18, 2022 at LiveNation.com . The full routing can be found below.

FOREIGNER will continue its long-term initiative with the GRAMMY Museum Foundation to invite choirs to open the show with a live a cappella ‘Pitch Perfect’ performance of Classic Rock songs. FOREIGNER will join radio partners across the country to create a contest for local choirs to win donations to their music programs. One winning choir will be selected at each show, and that choir will receive a grand prize of new musical equipment.  For more details please go to  foreignerchoirs.com .

Leader and founder of FOREIGNER, Mick Jones said, “Many years ago, I wrote a song called ‘Feels Like The First Time’ and today we are launching one last worldwide tour.  We will be presenting a show that I know will have the same enthusiasm as our very first appearances.  The tour will start this summer in America and we hope to get to every place that we have played over the last several years.  While I’m sure our fans will have mixed feelings about the end of the road for the band, I know our shows are going to delight audiences everywhere.”

Says FOREIGNER lead singer Kelly Hansen, “The time has come. We have more or less lived our lives on the road for almost eighteen years.  We have always strived to give you our best and we intend to finish this the same way. Foreigner has a brilliant and increasingly demanding catalogue of songs to sing and I refuse to give them less than they deserve. So, we’re going to finish strong. I want to make it very clear how grateful and appreciative we are to our audiences all over the world who have supported this band.  I’m sure there may be occasions when we’ll do some special appearances, but I think the time is coming for us to live off the road. Thank you all so much!”

“I remember how cool the last time we toured with Foreigner was in 1982.  We played to massive stadiums – New Orleans, Kansas City, Day On the Green in Oakland, JFK in Philly – and we’re back together again, 41 years later.  It’s going to be the Tour of Summer ’23!” said Paul Dean of Loverboy.

“It’s not very often you get a chance to play on the same stage as one of your all-time favorite bands…and how many hit songs can you play on the same stage every night of a 2023 Summer tour?….. it’s going to be amazing…. I can’t wait.” Said Mike Reno of Loverboy.

Mick Jones continues to elevate FOREIGNER’s influence and guide the band to new horizons with his stylistic songwriting, indelible guitar hooks and multi-layered talents while lead singer Kelly Hansen, one of rock’s greatest showmen, has led FOREIGNER into the digital age inspiring a whole new generation of fans. Bassist Jeff Pilson; Michael Bluestein on keyboards; guitarist Bruce Watson; Chris Frazier on drums and guitarist Luis Maldonado provide an unprecedented level of energy that has resulted in the re-emergence of the astounding music that speaks to FOREIGNER‘s enduring popularity.  FOREIGNER has an extraordinary streaming and radio audience.  Click here for an overview of Classic Rock artists’ stats.

With more Top 10 hits than Journey and ten multi-platinum albums, FOREIGNER is universally hailed as one of the most popular rock acts in the world with a formidable musical arsenal that continues to propel sold-out tours and album sales, now exceeding 80 million.  Responsible for some of rock and roll’s most enduring anthems including “Juke Box Hero,” “Cold As Ice,” “Hot Blooded,” “Waiting For A Girl Like You,” “Feels Like The First Time,” “Urgent,” “Head Games,” “Say You Will,” “Dirty White Boy,” “Long, Long Way From Home” and the worldwide #1 hit, “I Want To Know What Love Is,” FOREIGNER still rocks the charts more than 40 years into the game with massive airplay and continued Billboard Top 200 album success.  Streams of FOREIGNER’s hits are approaching 15 million per week.

With their trademark red leather pants, bandanas, big rock sound and high-energy live shows, LOVERBOY has sold more than 10 million albums, earning four multi-platinum plaques, including the four-million-selling “Get Lucky,” and a trio of double-platinum releases in their self-titled 1980 debut, 1983’s “Keep It Up” and 1985’s “Lovin’ Every Minute of It.” Their string of hits includes, in addition to the anthem “Working for the Weekend,” such arena rock staples as “Lovin’ Every Minute of It,” “This Could Be the Night,” “Hot Girls in Love,” “The Kid is Hot Tonite,” “Notorious”, “Turn Me Loose,” “When It’s Over,” “Heaven In Your Eyes” and “Queen of the Broken Hearts.”  The group still features the original line-up of vocalist Mike Reno, guitarist Paul Dean, drummer Matt Frenette and keyboardist Doug Johnson with bassist Ken “Spider” Sinnaeve replacing the late Scott Smith.

Foreigner to Launch Historic Farewell Tour In 2023 — 'Very Difficult Decision,' Says Kelly Hansen

"I see other musicians sometimes that I go, 'Wow, that was disappointing,' and I don't want to be someone that other people say that about," frontman Kelly Hansen told Billboard of aging acts

Ryan Parker is the former Senior News Editor, Weekends for PEOPLE. He left PEOPLE in 2023.

The iconic rockers of Foreigner announced on Monday that their touring days are almost over — but not before their Historic Farewell Tour, which kicks off next summer in Georgia.

The "Feels Like the First Time" band, formed in 1976 in New York City by British guitarist Mick Jones, 77, will perform 32 North American concerts from July 6 in Alpharetta, GA through Sept. 3 in Holmdel, N.J., according to Billboard , which noted the band would have more dates, both domestic and overseas, through the end of 2024.

"Foreigner is a completely revitalized band with a whole new energy that has won the hearts of our fans all over the world, and I want to go out while the band is still at the top of its game," Jones told Billboard . "I had the idea that was to become Foreigner back in 1974, and I was 30 years old at the time. By the end of our farewell tour, over 50 years will have passed, and that's a long time to be on the road."

The "Cold as Ice" hit-makers confirmed the news on Instagram , sharing a picture of the Billboard story with the caption, "Have you heard?"

The end of touring for the band had been a topic of conversation for some time, mostly revolving around the topic of maintaining the desired caliber of the band's performance, Foreigner's frontman, Kelly Hansen, 61, explained to Billboard .

"It's a very difficult decision to come to," he said. "This catalog of songs, it's extremely challenging for a rock tenor vocalist like myself to sing. I never would have thought in a million years I'd be singing these songs in the keys at this age, and I don't know how much longer I can do that at the level I need do. You can drop keys and do this and do that, but I'm more of an old-school person. If I'm not doing it for real, then I shouldn't be doing it."

Hansen added, "We're at an era in life where a lot of bands from the '70s are right on the ragged edge of still being able to do shows. I see other musicians sometimes that I go, 'Wow, that was disappointing,' and I don't want to be someone that other people say that about. I want to do this band the way it's supposed to be, and when it's not like that, I don't want to be doing it."

Teasing possible new music on the horizon to Billboard , the iconic group has released nine studio albums, five of which went multi-platinum since their 1977 self-titled debut. The group still has a number of 2022 concerts scheduled and more in the spring, all occurring prior to the farewell launch.

Tickets for The Historic Farewell Tour go on sale Friday via livenation.com . More information and updates will be posted to foreigneronline.com .

Foreigner announce first leg of farewell tour for 2023

The classic rock stalwarts are heading out on the road one last time, with farewell dates to extend until late 2024

Foreigner

Classic rock stalwarts Foreigner have announced the first leg of their farewell tour, revealing a slew of North American dates for 2023.

The tour is scheduled to begin July 6 at Ameris Bank Amphitheatre in Alpharetta, Georgia. It will continue throughout the US in July and August, wrapping up September 3 at the PNC Bank Arts Center in Holmdel, New Jersey. Canadian rockers Loverboy (of ‘Working For The Weekend’ fame) will be on support duties for the shows. Tickets go on sale this Friday (November 18).

Per Billboard , the North American tour will be just one leg of a long farewell run Foreigner intend to carry out before they call it quits. More North American and international dates are set to be announced, with the band reportedly planning to tour until late 2024.

Foreigner’s line-up currently includes founding member Mick Jones, plus bassist Jeff Pilson, vocalist Kelly Hansen, keyboardist Michael Bluestein, guitarists Bruce Watson and Luis Maldonado and drummer Chris Frazier. Jones is the sole remaining member of the band’s original personnel to remain in the band – with all others joining in 2004 or later.

“Many years ago, I wrote a song called ‘Feels Like The First Time’ and today we are launching one last worldwide tour. We will be presenting a show that I know will have the same enthusiasm as our very first appearances,” Jones said in a statement.

“The tour will start this summer in America and we hope to get to every place that we have played over the last several years. While I’m sure our fans will have mixed feelings about the end of the road for the band, I know our shows are going to delight audiences everywhere.”

Foreigner were formed in New York in 1976 by Jones, along with ex- King Crimson member Ian McDonald, vocalist Lou Gramm and others. Their self-titled album arrived the following year, spawning hits like ‘Feels Like The First Time’ and ‘Cold As Ice’. They enjoyed continued success in the late seventies and early eighties, with hits like ‘Hot Blooded’, ‘Juke Box Hero’, ‘Waiting For A Girl Like You’, ‘I Want To Know What Love Is’ and more.

Gramm left the band in 2003, but has occasionally appeared onstage with the band as a special guest in recent years. McDonald, who left the band in 1980, also made a slew of recent cameo appearances prior to his death in February .

Foreigner Announce 2023 North American Farewell Tour

Loverboy will support the 2023 run, with additional legs yet to be announced

Foreigner Announce 2023 North American Farewell Tour

Foreigner will embark on a final “Historic Farewell Tour” in 2023, nearly five decades after their formation in 1976.

The North American outing kicks off on July 6th Alpharetta, Georgia, and spans 32 dates, wrapping up on September 3rd in Holmdel, New Jersey. Loverboy will support this first run of dates — reprising their 1982 tour with Foreigner. Additional domestic and overseas legs extending through the end of 2024 are yet to be announced.

Artist pre-sales begin Tuesday (November 15th) at 10 a.m. ET, with a Live Nation pre-sale starting Thursday (November 17th) at 9 a.m. local time using the code HEADLINE . A general on-sale begins Friday (November 18th). Pick up tickets via Ticketmaster .

In an interview with Billboard , founding guitarist Mick Jones and current frontman Kelly Hansen opened up about the decision to call it quits.

“It’s a very difficult decision to come to,” said Hansen, who’s been Foreigner’s lead singer since 2005. “This catalog of songs, it’s extremely challenging for a rock tenor vocalist like myself to sing. I never would have thought in a million years I’d be singing these songs in the keys at this age, and I don’t know how much longer I can do that at the level I need do. You can drop keys and do this and do that, but I’m more of an old school person. If I’m not doing it for real then I shouldn’t be doing it.”

The age and health of the band members was a major factor in the decision to launch one last tour. Jones, now 77 and the last original member, has only been able to perform select show in recent years, usually making an appearance toward the end of the set.

“Mick does all the shows he can do with us as his health allows, and we’re cognizant of that,” Hansen said. “I can’t say that doesn’t have an effect [on the farewell tour decision], but that’s also a reality of life and time, so you take what you’re given and you make your decisions based on that.”

Jones added that fans can expect the “same enthusiasm as our very first appearances” on the farewell tour and a setlist filled with the band’s plethora of hits including “Hot Blooded,” “Urgent,” “Cold as Ice,” “Double Vision,” and more.

“While I’m sure our fans will have mixed feelings about the end of the road for the band, I know our shows are going to delight audiences everywhere,” remarked Jones in a press release.

Foreigner Announce 2023 Farewell Tour Dates With Loverboy

One of the '70s and '80s biggest rock acts, Foreigner , are ready to call it a career, announcing plans for their 2023 Farewell Tour.

The veteran band who gave us such classic hits as "Juke Box Hero," "Hot Blooded," "Urgent" and "Cold as Ice" will be hitting road for one final go starting July 6 at Atlanta's Ameris Bank Amphitheatre. Dates for the run will carry over to a Sept. 3 finale in Holmdel, New Jersey. Check toward the bottom of this post for all of the dates, cities and venues.

And as if that weren't enough to view this concert-going experience as, ahem, urgent, then you'll be thrilled to know that fellow '80s hitmakers Loverboy will be joining them on the run, making sure you're lovin' every minute of it for sure.

Founding member Mick Jones said, “Many years ago, I wrote a song called ‘Feels Like The First Time’ and today we are launching one last worldwide tour.

Foreigner vocalist Kelly Hansen adds, "The time has come.

"I remember how cool the last time we toured with Foreigner was in 1982. We played to massive stadiums - New Orleans, Kansas City, Day On the Green in Oakland, JFK in Philly - and we’re back together again, 41 years later. It's going to be the Tour of Summer ’23!" said Paul Dean of Loverboy.

Loverboy frontman Mike Reno adds, "It’s not very often you get a chance to play on the same stage as one of your all-time favorite bands...and how many hit songs can you play on the same stage every night of a 2023 Summer tour?….. it’s going to be amazing…. I can’t wait."

Tickets for Foreigner's Farewell Tour with Loverboy will go on sale this Friday (Nov. 18) at LiveNation.com .

Foreigner is about to hit the road one final time.

During an appearance on " Fox & Friends " on Monday, Kelly Hansen, lead singer of Foreigner, announced that the band is planning its farewell tour, which is set to start in July 2023.

"Our plan is to kind of travel to all the places we've ever played before, before it's all over," Hansen explained. "We can't do it in one year. We can't do the whole world in one year, so we're going to do the U.S. next year and then the rest of the world in 2024."

There are many reasons they chose to retire from touring, with Hansen citing the continued difficulty of hitting high notes and the constant time away from home as a few.

FOREIGNER REVEALS HOW THEIR MUSIC RESONATES FROM GENERATION TO GENERATION

"It's mixed. It's important for me personally that we're delivering these songs as they need to be, and it gets harder for me every year singing high tenor songs. I have a high standard, and that's really important. I would rather quit while we were doing it at our best," he said. "For the last 17 years, and it takes a little bit of a toll on you. When COVID came, I finally saw four seasons at my house for the first time. I look forward to spending time with my new wife and family, that's going to be great. I have a lot of other things that I'm passionate about in life."

In a statement released by the band, Hansen expressed how grateful he was for the fans who have supported the band since the beginning. He says he understands that fans will be upset by the news, but he knows the time has come for him and the rest of the band to enjoy some time at home.

The band was formed in 1976 and released their biggest hit in 1984 with "I Want to Know What Love Is." Their song, "Waiting for a Girl Like You," reached No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and stayed there for a record-setting 10 weeks. In total, they had 14 singles reach the Top 20 on the charts.

Foreigner is one of the best-selling rock bands of all time, releasing nine studio albums , with five of them going multi-platinum. The album "Records," a compilation of the band's first four albums, went on to sell more than 50 million copies worldwide.

"We've been working with Grammy Foundation for 10 years to have choirs sing. On the farewell tour, we're going to do a new thing where up to five choirs are going to open for us at every show," Hansen said. "We really want to support the arts in schools. It's the first thing that's stopped when budgets go."

While on "Fox & Friends," Hansen performed with OneVoice and sang a medley of some of the band's biggest hits and fan favorites.

Foreigner Announce 2023 North American Farewell Tour

The post Foreigner Announce 2023 North American Farewell Tour appeared first on Consequence .

“While I’m sure our fans will have mixed feelings about the end of the road for the band, I know our shows are going to delight audiences everywhere,” remarked Jones in a press release.

The band, which is known for hits like “I Want to Know What Love Is,” “Cold As Ice,” “Hot Blooded” and more, also is set to continue its long-term initiative with the Grammy Museum Foundation. Throughout the trek, the band will invite choirs to open the shows with a live a cappella performance of classic rock songs.

Foreigner will join radio partners across the country to create a contest for local choirs to win donations to their music programs. One winning choir will be selected at each show, and that choir will receive a grand prize for new musical equipment. More details are available via  foreignerchoirs.com .

“The time has come,” added lead singer Kelly Hansen. “We have more or less lived our lives on the road for almost eighteen years. We have always strived to give you our best and we intend to finish this the same way. Foreigner to Begin Extensive Farewell Tour Next Summer

Foreigner has announced the beginning of their Historic Farewell Tour, kicking off in summer 2023 with '80s pop-rockers Loverboy in tow.

The North American first leg of their final voyage launches on July 6 in Alpharetta, Ga., and concludes on Sept. 3 in Holmdel, N.J. Foreigner will announce more stateside and international legs, which are currently slated to run through the end of 2024,  Billboard reports.

You can see the full list of currently announced dates below.

"Foreigner is a completely revitalized band with a whole new energy that has won the hearts of our fans all over the world, and I want to go out while the band is still at the top of its game," co-founding guitarist and sole original member  Mick Jones  told Billboard . "I had the idea that was to become Foreigner back in 1974, and I was 30 years old at the time. By the end of our farewell tour, over 50 years will have passed – and that's a long time to be on the road."

Lead singer Kelly Hansen, who assumed the mantle from co-founding vocalist Lou Gramm in 2005, said the decision to throw in the towel now is a matter of practicality. "This catalog of songs, it's extremely challenging for a rock tenor vocalist like myself to sing," the 61-year-old singer added. "I never would have thought in a million years I'd be singing these songs in the keys at this age, and I don't know how much longer I can do that at the level I need do. You can drop keys and do this and do that, but I'm more of an old-school person. If I'm not doing it for real then I shouldn’t be doing it."

Hansen also acknowledged that Jones' physical condition influenced the decision, as the 77-year-old guitarist now performs with the band in a limited capacity. "Mick does all the shows he can do with us as his health allows, and we're cognizant of that," Hansen told Billboard . "I can't say that doesn't have an effect [on the tour] ... but that's also a reality of life and time, so you take what you're given and you make your decisions based on that.

"We're at an era in life where a lot of bands from the '70s are right on the ragged edge of still being able to do shows," Hansen continued. "I see other musicians sometimes that I go, 'Wow, that was disappointing,' and I don't want to be someone that other people say that about. I want to do this band the way it's supposed to be, and when it's not like that I don't want to be doing it."

Foreigner Announce Farewell Tour Beginning Summer 2023

By Andrew Magnotta @AndrewMagnotta

November 15, 2022

Foreigner plans to launch its 'Historic Farewell Tour' next summer with support from Loverboy .

The North American tour kicks off in Georgia on July 6 and concludes September 6 in Holmdel, NJ.

The band has promised more U.S. and international tours, however, before taking its final bows around the end of 2024, according to Billboard .

Guitarist and founder Mick Jones , the only continuing member of the band from the '70s, acknowledges that the decision to say goodbye was not easy.

“Foreigner is a completely revitalized band with a whole new energy that has won the hearts of our fans all over the world, and I want to go out while the band is still at the top of its game,” Jones said. “I had the idea that was to become Foreigner back in 1974, and I was 30 years old at the time. By the end of our farewell tour, over 50 years will have passed, and that’s a long time to be on the road.”

The core of the current Foreigner lineup has been in place since about 2005. Jones, now 77, has even deemphasized his own place in the band's live shows in recent years, due to health issues.

While the band is contemplating an end to its live performing career, Jones and company are considering releasing more music in the next few years. Singer Kelly Hansen and bassist Jeff Pilson say the band has new material "in different stages of completion" that might find the light of day at some point, as an EP or a single.

Tickets for the 'Historic Farewell' Tour go on sale November 18. Go here for more information .

Foreigner’s Farewell Tour Hits SPAC with Greatest Hits | 2023 Concert Review

My Dirty Life and Times

As I often do, I wandered up Route 20 to the Saratoga Performing Arts Center (SPAC) on Tuesday evening. I was eager to get out and catch the Foreigner Farewell Tour, with Loverboy opening. After a busy, hot July not ideal for outdoor events, the comfortable 70-degree weather was a welcome change.

Upon arriving, I was met with a longer than usual line to enter due to SPAC implementing new scanning technology. This was the first concert using it, causing some confusion. Instead of emptying pockets into “the bowl,” you now simply walk between two towers – green to enter, red to move to the normal routine line.

Once inside, I headed to my usual overpriced food stand for a large Diet Pepsi – quite the party animal. Looking around I did notice the age of the crowd skewed quite a bit old than I, it resembled that of the orchestra or ballet. I mean I shouldn’t be surprised given that Foreigner has had a 46-year career, but I was nonetheless. At 56, I felt like the kid.

Opener: Loverboy

First up on the evening’s festivities was Loverboy. This was my fourth time seeing them overall, 3 of those four times have been in the last 5 years.

The first time was back in my youth at the green age of 15 back in May of 1982 at the Montreal Forum. My first ever concert. They were the opener then too for Bryan Adams. Only once have I seen them as the headliner, always the bridesmaid…

They have always been a guilty pleasure, Unfortunately, they seemed a bit flat this time around. A bit tired. Forty-plus years of touring will do that to you. They just went through the songs with little to no enthusiasm. ( Turn Me Loose Video ) Would have preferred some deeper cuts as it’s been the same setlist for the last several years. Still, it was enjoyable hearing and singing along to the songs nonetheless.

Having none of the original members (unless you count Kelly Hansen and Jeff Pilson who have been in the band since 2005 and 2004) they certainly had more energy and enthusiasm having more youth on their side. This was only my second time seeing them. The last time was a couple of years ago in 2017 with Cheap Trick. (Props again to Setlist . fm for refreshing my memory.)

Kelly ran around with the energy of a younger man despite being 61 himself. He had the crowd singing along from start to finish playing their iconic hits, transporting back to a time of an era of classic rock and unforgettable melodies. The melodies have been what they are known for.

Midway through the show they brought out chairs and performed a three-song acoustic set and a band introduction. Jeff Pilson, formerly of the 80’s band Dokken, was actually seated for the whole show due to some sort of foot injury being wheeled on and off the stage in a wheelchair between stage changes.

After the obligatory keyboard and drum solos Kelly appeared in the back of the amphitheater suspended on a somewhat unstable tower to begin Juke Box Hero ( Video ), many in the crowd unaware for much of the song on his whereabouts before finishing it up on stage to “end the show”.

They returned for the encore finishing up with “I Want to Know What Love Is” and “Hot Blooded”. It was certainly an enjoyable welcomed Tuesday evening out in the post-heatwavy era. And in the end, it was me who was the tired one.

LOU GRAMM: 'I Don't Understand How They Can Be Touring With No Original Members And Still Calling Themselves FOREIGNER'

The Grant's Rock Warehaus   YouTube channel has uploaded video of original FOREIGNER singer Lou Gramm being interviewed by Mark Goodman on March 8 aboard The 80s Cruise . You can now watch the question-and-answer session below.

Asked for his opinion on FOREIGNER 's announcement that the band was embarking on its farewell tour, Gramm said (as transcribed by BLABBERMOUTH.NET ): "I think it's a good thing. At this point of the FOREIGNER career, epic career, I think it's run its course. And it's been good years for all involved, especially the band that was FOREIGNER 's inception. There were changes in personnel after that while I was still in, and that was a damn good band too. And Mick 's [ Jones , FOREIGNER founder and guitarist] choice to keep it going after there were no original members other than himself, that's his option. I can't quite get… I know his health, he's had his ups and downs. And I don't understand how they can be touring with no original members and still calling themselves FOREIGNER and going on for years like that. I guess it's not my business, and maybe it is a business decision for them, but it just doesn't feel right to me."

He added: "Honestly, for years [ Mick has] been showing up for half the show or he'd come in the last four or five songs of the set. And apparently lately he's come in for the last song and the encore, and that was it. And then I know there's been many , many shows lately where he's not there at all."

Asked if he would be interested in making a special guest appearance at any of the shows on FOREIGNER 's farewell tour, Lou said: "I'm not sure. I'm so at peace with where it is now and how it's ended. And we had our 40th[-anniversary] reunion of one of the albums — the first album or FOREIGNER '4' or 'Double Vision' — we had those. We played some shows with the new band and the old band, and those have been a lot of fun. But just for me to come in and sit in with a band that emotionally doesn't mean that much to me and just play for the memories of it… If there were other members of the original band onstage, I might be inclined to seriously think about it. But to come and guest with the new FOREIGNER , that doesn't appeal to me."

When Goodman noted that Gramm had previously performed with FOREIGNER 's current lineup, Lou said: "Yes, when they had the reunion tours. I have not gone to any of the shows and guested myself on stage with the new band — just me. I haven't done that. It's always been with members of the original band with me."

Last October, Gramm was asked during an appearance on SiriusXM 's "Trunk Nation With Eddie Trunk" what he thinks of the band's current frontman, Kelly Hansen , who has been in the group for nearly two decades. "I think he's a good singer," Lou said. "And he sings those songs okay; he sings them good. But he mimics my style right down to the ad-libs, and I'm offended by that… I just think that if he's gonna sing the songs, he could sing the melodies that are familiar, but when it comes to the ad-libs and all the little things that set me aside as a vocalist when I sing them, he should make his own up. He should have his own ad-libs that are his own; he doesn't have to mimic me."

Gramm 's comments echoed those he made a little over two months earlier when he told John Beaudin of RockHistoryMusic.com about Hansen : " Kelly is all right. He's a good singer. But I think Mick [ Jones , FOREIGNER 's founding guitarist and leader] really told Kelly , when he first got in the band, that he had to study me, because he sings those songs with the same musical innuendos and vocal licks and ad-libs as I have. He's mimicking me. His voice doesn't sound like me, but he's singing the songs the way I would sing them.

"Some people say, 'Well, take it as a compliment, Lou .' I don't take it as a compliment," Gramm continued. "You're a singer with a big band like that — use your voice and your style. Don't hang your coat on my hook.

"I don't think he should sing the songs verbatim like me," Lou added. "Maybe sing a couple of parts. But let his own influences show — show the fans that he's the new singer now, not me."

Asked what it was like to share the stage with Hansen and other members of the current and original FOREIGNER lineup in 2017 and 2018 to celebrate the band's 40th anniversary, Lou told RockHistoryMusic.com : "It was okay. [ Kelly ] was bouncing off the walls. He couldn't stand still or sit still. After a song ended, I couldn't even get a word to thank the audience or tell 'em that I was happy to be part of the reunion. At the end of the song, the last song hit, and there wasn't a quarter of a second of space before he was yapping away to the audience… It was, like, 'Jeez, will you quiet down for a minute?'"

Pressed about whether it is "over now" for him and FOREIGNER , Lou said: "I think so, yeah. I don't wanna be a part of it. Well, Ian [ McDonald , guitar] has passed away and Ed Gagliardi [bass] passed away, even though he wasn't part of the reunions. Two original members of the six are now gone. And Mick is in very poor health. I think when the new FOREIGNER plays, I've heard that he comes on for one song and then waves and goes offstage. [In the recent past] he would play the whole last half of the set. But then he was in the hospital again for weeks. He had some heart problems and his recovery time was very long and tedious. And I heard that he comes out for one song now — when he comes on. Most of the time FOREIGNER has no original FOREIGNER members in it."

Gramm was the voice on FOREIGNER 's biggest hits, including "Feels Like The First Time" and "Cold As Ice" from the band's eponymous debut in 1977, and later songs like "Hot Blooded" and "I Want to Know What Love Is" .

The 72-year-old Gramm left FOREIGNER for good in 2002 and has battled health issues in recent years, including the removal of a non-cancerous tumor. He told the Democrat & Chronicle in 2018 that he was planning to retire, but still reunited with FOREIGNER for several shows that year.

FOREIGNER replaced Gramm with Hansen in 2005. Jones , the only remaining original member of FOREIGNER , suffered from some health issues beginning in 2011, eventually resulting in heart surgery in 2012.

Gramm and Jones 's June 2013 performance of "I Want To Know What Love Is" and "Juke Box Hero" at the Songwriters Hall Of Fame in New York City marked the first time the pair performed together in a decade after Gramm left FOREIGNER for a second time. Hansen has fronted the group for the past 18 years.

Foreigner Announce 2023 Farewell Tour

Forty-five years after Foreigner formed for the first time, the legendary rock group will trek for the very last time. The band has announced a farewell tour that will occur in 2023.

The band, formed during 1976 by British guitarist Mick Jones, will launch its Historic Farewell Tour next July 6 in Alpharetta, Georgia. There will be 32 U.S dates that run through September 3 in Holmdel, New Jersey. Loverboy will be opening. More legs, both domestic and overseas, are on tap through the end of 2024.

“Foreigner is a completely revitalized band with a whole new energy that has won the hearts of our fans all over the world, and I want to go out while the band is still at the top of its game,” said Jones, according to Billboard . “I had the idea that was to become Foreigner back in 1974, and I was 30 years old at the time. By the end of our farewell tour, over 50 years will have passed, and that’s a long time to be on the road.”

Kelly Hansen, Foreigner’s frontman since 2005, says he and Jones had been discussing the move for a while. “It’s a very difficult decision to come to,” he noted, adding that maintaining the caliber of the band’s performance, and his in particular, was a driving factor in the decision to end touring.

“This catalog of songs, it’s extremely challenging for a rock tenor vocalist like myself to sing,” explains Hansen, 61. “I never would have thought in a million years I’d be singing these songs in the keys at this age, and I don’t know how much longer I can do that at the level I need do. You can drop keys and do this and do that, but I’m more of an old school person. If I’m not doing it for real then I shouldn’t be doing it."

Foreigner has released nine studio albums and sold more than 50 million records worldwide. It’s also notched nine top 10 singles on the Billboard Hot 100, including rock radio staples “Feels Like the First Time,” “Hot Blooded,” “Double Vision,” “Urgent” and the power ballad “I Want to Know What Love Is.” More than two dozen members have been part of the band's roster over the years, and members of the first two lineups made a series of guest appearances with the current lineup during 2017 and 2018.

Mick Jones, the last original member still active with Foreigner, has become something of a special guest at the band’s concerts, not attending every show due to health reasons and playing during the latter portion of the set. “Mick does all the shows he can do with us as his health allows, and we’re cognizant of that,” Hansen says. “I can’t say that doesn’t have an effect” on the farewell tour decision, “but that’s also a reality of life and time, so you take what you’re given and you make your decisions based on that.”

Foreigner has a number of concerts scheduled this month and also in the spring, prior to the farewell tour launch — including March and April residencies at the Venetian in Las Vegas. Hansen adds that while Foreigner is pulling the plug on touring, it may not go away entirely - possibly releasing more music in the future, too. “I’m sure there might be the odd or occasional things we do,” the frontman says. “You can never say never about things. But for me this (tour) is it. It’s not like one of these, like we’ve seen, ploys to get people out to shows.”

Tickets for The Historic Farewell Tour go on sale November 18 via livenation.com . The group is once again working with the Grammy Museum Foundation to recruit local choirs at each stop to perform with the band for “I Want to Know What Love Is” via foreignerchoirs.com .
