A Complete HAFLONG Travel Guide, Assam’s only Hill Station

avatar

There are many names attributed to Haflong when it comes to its natural beauty and the fact that it is the only Hill Station in Assam . Haflong is often called Scotland of Assam or Switzerland of Assam due to its pristine beauty, ethnic culture, and heritage; majestic hills, lush evergreen forests, and numerous small rivulets and waterfalls. This Haflong travel guide will help you to plan your trip to this beautiful hill station. A minimum of a two-day visit will be enough to explore the best places in Haflong.

A brief introduction about Haflong

Located at an elevation of 680 m above sea level, and situated in the lap of the Barail Mountain Range, Haflong is the main town and district headquarters of the Dima Hasao District in Assam. The Barail Range is also the highest Hill range in Assam. Formerly Haflong belonged to the North Cachar Hills District in Assam.

Dima Hasao is one of the least populous districts in Assam and if we go back in history Dima Hasao belonged to the Dimasa Kingdom during the medieval period with its capital in Maibang and Dimapur. Dimapur is now in Nagaland; thus, you will find a lot of Dimasa Kachari tribespeople and even Dimasa ruins in Dimapur.

#haflongtravelguide #haflong #nchills #assam #assamhillstation + Haflong travel guide + assam tourism

Haflong is also Assam’s only Hill Station and for the iconic Hill Line train journey, crossing Haflong rail junction, many people prefer to book a train ticket from Guwahati to Badarpur Junction just to enjoy the greenery of the North Cachar Hills.

With the majority of the tribal population belonging to the Dimasa Kachari tribe, Haflong is also home to many other tribes like the Kuki, Hmar, Karbi, Khasi, Zeme Naga, Biate, Hrangkhol and many more.

How to reach Haflong

You can reach Haflong by cab or bus and train. The on-road distance from Guwahati to Haflong is approximately 330kms which will take around 8 hours and by bus, it takes generally 10 hours. Haflong Junction is also one of the important railway junctions in Assam connecting many important stations and trains. You can book your train tickets via irctc website.

But with my many personal experiences and numerous journeys to Karimganj and Silchar since childhood, I can bet that no one journey will be as special and memorable as a train journey across the NC Hills. The best and the most highly recommended way is to book a train ticket.

Vistadome Special Tourist train to enjoy the beauty of North Cachar Hills and visit Haflong

The Northeast Frontier Railway has introduced new Vistadome coaches for its passengers to enjoy the beautiful train journey across the North Cachar Hills. You need to book GHY NHLG TOURIST 15888 which runs from Guwahati to Badarpur junction.

The train departs at 6.45 am with just two stoppages one in Maibang and the next in Haflong. It reaches Haflong at 10:45 am and Badarpur at 2:35 pm.

#haflongtravelguide #haflong #nchills #assam #assamhillstation + Haflong travel guide + assam tourism

This train runs every day but the Special Tourist coaches are available only on Saturday and Wednesday . From Guwahati to Badarpur there are a total of 5 stoppages on some of the important Railway Stations.

The comfortable reclining and rotating seats, transparent glasses on the top, big-sized windows, a special pantry, and also a special small chamber at the end of the train to get the best view of the hills and rivers.

#haflongtravelguide #haflong #nchills #assam #assamhillstation + Haflong travel guide + assam tourism

The tourist special coach is set at the end of the train (the last coach) so passengers can enjoy a 160-degree view of the journey. I shall write in full detail about this special train journey to Haflong in another blog post.

My journey  to Haflong and some childhood memories

It was last year in February when I visited Haflong. It was a quick weekend trip, we didn’t have much time in hand so we decided to make the best use of the weekend. Since my paternal home is in the Karimganj district of Assam, I used to visit there twice almost every year.

We used to stay in Dibrugarh which is in Upper Assam and at that time there was no Broad Gauge Rail service in the NC Hills and Barak Valley part of Assam.

So we used to board the train at Dibrugarh (It was mostly the Kamrup Express) and then at Lumding Station, we had to board another train that was a Meter Gauge. That journey across places like Haflong, Maibong, Maigrengdisa etc was the most spectacular one.

#haflongtravelguide #haflong #nchills #assam #assamhillstation + Haflong travel guide + assam tourism

I had never seen those bluish waters in the streams flowing, the green mountains, flowers blooming everywhere and the clearest skies as the train kept moving unfolding the beautiful scenery in front of us.

As kids, we used to get thrilled by the tunnels since it was a hill line and some rail bridges were so old that I remember someone saying “These bridges belonged to the British Era”.

Some of the bridges were so long that when it took a turn we could see the whole train on a bridge and that sight was something I cherish till now. I didn’t have a camera at that time to capture the visual but it will remain stored in my memory and my eyes forever.

I and my sister used to sit and write down on small notepads the names of the stations and the total number of tunnels that we crossed by.

But nowadays everything has changed with modernisation, the upgradation of the rail lines and the construction of new rail bridges and infrastructure I felt much of those sceneries is lost. The mountains are reduced to create new rail tracks, I am sure many trees are also cut down and the number of tunnels was also reduced.

But I think change in infrastructure, improvement in communication system, creation of new bridges, roads, etc has now become an integral part of development and progress.

Places to stay in Haflong

There are not many options for staying in Haflong as the place is still evolving as a tourist place in Assam. With the improvement in train connectivity, many things have changed over the past few years. We stayed in The Landmark Hotel. It is quite a humble place to stay, with great food and ambience. It is located in Member’s Council Hostel Road Haflong.

#haflongtravelguide #haflong #nchills #assam #assamhillstation + Haflong travel guide + assam tourism

Just a walkable distance from the main road where you can get autos for communication. There are other hotels like the Nothao Lodge. There are many other hotels and some homestay options too but since I don’t have any exact review I am not mentioning other names.

The best time to visit Haflong is from October to March when the temperature ranges between 10 to 23 degrees. Avoid the monsoon seasons from July to September as there may be heavy rainfall and even landslides. The summer months can be really hot and humid. We visited by the end of February and the weather was simply perfect.

Best Places to Visit in Haflong

Now let’s come to the main part where I shall list all the best places you can visit in Haflong in this Haflong Travel guide. You can either book a cab/taxi for a whole day tour of Haflong, it will let you visit all the important places. And you can also book an auto for the same.

Please don’t forget to bargain the charges, they will ask you an abrupt amount. On day 1 our cab picked us up from the station, then we checked in at the hotel and then we went sightseeing which ended in the evening.

For this whole period, he charged us 3000 INR. On day 2 we booked an auto and he showed us some more places and then dropped us at the railway station at 2.30 pm as we had to board the Kanchenjunga Express to Guwahati.

The Haflong Railway station is also quite a scenic one , you can spend some time there sipping tea and enjoying the beautiful hills surrounding the railway station and also get some candid pictures. It’s also a great Instagram-worthy spot as I felt.

Boro Haflong View Point

Some 12 km away from the main Haflong town, you can visit the Boro Haflong View Point . It’s a tall building and from the terrace, you can enjoy the beauty of the Barail range. On a clear day, the whole range is visible and with the clear blue sky at the backdrop, it seems like a painting with the brightest of colours of nature.

There is also a restaurant on the ground floor of the building if you want you can eat some food or have a cup of coffee and enjoy the scenery.

#haflongtravelguide #haflong #nchills #assam #assamhillstation + Haflong travel guide + assam tourism

The Haflong Lake

Located at the centre of Haflong, it is the largest natural water body providing activities like boating, angling and bird watching. The place is visited by many migratory birds during winter. You can have a splendid time in the evening with your family or take a stroll around.

Jatinga Bird Watching Centre.

From there, we went to the Jatinga Bird Watching Centre. Jatinga remains a place of immense interest for ornithologists, scientists and also tourists from all over the world. There is a mystery behind Jatinga related to the mass suicide of birds ranging from both local birds to even migratory birds.

#haflongtravelguide #haflong #nchills #assam #assamhillstation + Haflong travel guide + assam tourism

This is a mystery which hasn’t been solved yet even by experts from all over the world. No one could come up with a perfect answer to it. There are many stories associated with this tragic event but not one can you claim is true. The event generally takes place from September to November and in a place where mountains surround it but no one knows the exact location.

#haflongtravelguide #haflong #nchills #assam #assamhillstation + Haflong travel guide + assam tourism

But I never met any eyewitnesses or never saw any videos of this mass suicide of birds. The history behind this mass suicide of Birds goes back to the time when the place was dominated by the Nagas in 1900.

When they saw this mass suicide they fled thinking the place was cursed. But later the Jaintias settled down and are still residing in Jatinga. They considered it among the many blessings or mysteries of Mother Nature.

Many definitions behind this event have come up. Some say some evil force or spirit is working behind them, some say it is a curse, and some scientists believe that due to foggy weather and winds the birds lose their direction and collide with the mountains.

#haflongtravelguide #haflong #nchills #assam #assamhillstation + Haflong travel guide + assam tourism

I am sure in the coming days many more theories are going to untangle this mysterious phenomenon. According to a famous Ornithologist from Assam Anwaruddin Choudhury, the birds dying are mostly juvenile.

From the watch tower/viewpoint, we could handle spot any bird, there were a couple of kingfishers and lots of sparrows. So don’t expect there will be flocks of birds awaiting your arrival. However, during the winter months, you may spot some migratory birds.

There was nothing much to see, just mountains and pretty bougainvillaea blooming to add to the charm. There is also a restaurant but when we visited it was closed.

#haflongtravelguide #haflong #nchills #assam #assamhillstation + Haflong travel guide + assam tourism

Haflong Ethnic Village

From Jatinga we visited the Haflong Ethnic Village. It is a well-maintained park around a picturesque setting with small cottages belonging to different tribes of Halong. The place is an ideal spot for picnics and for spending some leisure time with family.

#haflongtravelguide #haflong #nchills #assam #assamhillstation + Haflong travel guide + assam tourism

In front of each cottage, there are installations of statues/models of Men depicting the particular tribe. The park is open till 5 pm in summer and 4 pm in winter and it opens at around 8 am.

#haflongtravelguide #haflong #nchills #assam #assamhillstation + Haflong travel guide + assam tourism

A traditional Dance Court is constructed just at the entrance, the kind of one where traditional functions or events of the various tribal groups take place in Haflong. There are Khelma Cottage, Vaiphei Cottage, Biate Cottage, Hrangkhol Cottage, Semkhor Cottage, Rongmei Naga Cottage, Dimasa Cottage, Dekichange Cottage, all of these resembling some prominent indigenous tribes of Haflong.

#haflongtravelguide #haflong #nchills #assam #assamhillstation + Haflong travel guide + assam tourism

Presbyterian Church of India, Fiangpui Haflong

We asked our driver to take us to a church as there are many churches in Haflong and we wanted to visit one. So he took us to one of the oldest churches in Haflong, The Presbyterian Church of India at Fiangpui in Haflong which was established in the year 1966. But unfortunately, the church was closed so we could just have a look from the outside.

#haflongtravelguide #haflong #nchills #assam #assamhillstation + Haflong travel guide + assam tourism

The Haflong Circuit House

Although the Circuit House is a very important place in the district and is mostly restricted for outsiders due to its picturesque location and lovely view of the Barail Range and the iconic rail bridge at a distance, the Haflong Circuit House is now counted among the major tourist spots.

#haflongtravelguide #haflong #nchills #assam #assamhillstation + Haflong travel guide + assam tourism

There are benches where you can enjoy the sunset and breathe fresh air and also take some lovely photographs. I also list this place as an Instagram-worthy spot in Haflong.

#haflongtravelguide #haflong #nchills #assam #assamhillstation + Haflong travel guide + assam tourism

If you are lucky and have good contacts with higher government officials you may also book a stay here. But this place is closed to the normal public. This is probably the most scenic circuit house I have ever seen.

#haflongtravelguide #haflong #nchills #assam #assamhillstation + Haflong travel guide + assam tourism

It was almost evening hour, so we asked our driver to take us to a place where we could eat some local cuisine. He took us to a small outlet run by women and they served us delicious food very similar to our homecooked food. We ate at our heart’s content. It was almost evening by then so we decided to take an evening stroll around the newly constructed Council Gate.

Solo walk in lone hill of Assam- Haflong

Photo of upasana kakati

It has been a decade since I moved out of North-east until I decided to return to the place I belong and exploring my own backyard so far has been a prolific experience. Interior Assam is considered to one of the most threat driven places in India but its relentless charm and beauty dragged me to exploring the terrains more closely. With the travel bug biting me hard, I decided to take a solo trip to the faraway lands of enchanting Blue Hills – HAFLONG, only Hill station in Assam. The place mesmerised me with its simplicity, nothing like Himalayan Hill Stations but it has its countryside charm weaving memories for me.

Photo of Solo walk in lone hill of Assam- Haflong 2/18 by upasana kakati

HAFLONG – only hill station of Assam stands on the picturesque hills with captivating view from all sides and I was taken aback by the warm hearted people of the quaint town. When in Haflong we are talking about the exotic Borail Range, mystery bird suicide point of Jatinga Valley, largest water body right in centre of the city Haflong Lake and charming villages with falling cascades of water. It is located in Dima Hasao District of Assam with many ethnic tribes but the majority is formed by Dimasa tribe.

HOW TO REACH HAFLONG

Haflong is well connected by roads from Guwahati with daily plying of bus services. There is direct train from Guwahati to New Haflong Station, a mesmerising railway station in lap of nature. Nearest Airport is Guwahati or Dimapur.

I work in Dimapur so planned my Itinerary from Dimapur. There are many trains from Dimapur to Lumding starting from morning 6.00am to night. I boarded Dibrugarh-Rangiya Express at 12.30 pm from Dimapur and reached Lumding at around 1.45pm. The connectivity from Lumding to Haflong is good with bus running till 9am and post which there are Tata Sumo all day long. I took an auto to Haflong Sumo Counter and took a shared cab at Rs 250 to Haflong. The Highway via Mahur was absolutely a visual treat and it was impeccably beautiful with trees on both sides. It takes around 3 to 4 hours to reach Haflong from Lumding. I reach there at around 6.30pm.

ACCOMMODATION

There are many budget guest house, homestays and hotels in Haflong but I would give a 100% thumbs up on Nothao’s Homestay. It is a little homestay sort of accommodation with beautiful idyllic campus full of natural abundance and is quite affordable. The room tariff starts from Rs 700 for single room to Rs 2500 for cottage. Make sure you make bookings in advance. Alternatively you can also stay at Hotel Elite where single room starts at Rs 600.

It is a phenomenon observed by the valley where the birds flying from South commit mass suicide in moonless foggy nights. It is yet to be revealed mystery but there are many stories doing the rounds. There is a bird watch tower and the whole Borail Range to your view.

Photo of Solo walk in lone hill of Assam- Haflong 5/18 by upasana kakati

The ethnic village exemplify natural beauty with lot of trees and gardens along with huts built representing each tribe of the district. Explore the little town on foot in the evening, walk around the lake as it has roads surrounding it, enjoy the view of the lake, walk on the hanging bridge over the lake. Walking around will also let you explore botanical garden, circuit house area and others.

Fiangpui – I did not have time to visit the place but is known for the baroque church designed with architectural bliss. The view from here according to people is breath taking and is a recommended place for visit.

Photo of Solo walk in lone hill of Assam- Haflong 8/18 by upasana kakati

Villages – There are many villages in and around Haflong that are beautiful and extremely scenic. Some of the villages have beautiful waterfalls amidst jungles after few hours of treks. I was fortunate enough to be a part of an event organised by Spectrum NGO. It was a one day village visit that included trek to Bendao Baiglai Waterfalls located in Samparidisa Village and the waterfall was breathtaking and exotic. It was a easy trek and the total time taken for completing the trek to and fro was 5 hours. I loved the flavour of ethnic food prepared by Samparidisa Village Committee and ofcourse the rice beer as well. There are many other villages yet to be explored but all of them profoundly beautiful.

Jpmorgan chase’s woke dei style guide nixes terms like ‘manpower,’ ‘blacklist’.

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

Jumping through these linguistic hoops is no cakewalk.

JPMorgan Chase employees mocked a recently-unveiled Diversity Equity and Inclusion style guide which clamps down on anti-“woke” language.

The glossary of “not recommended” words and phrases lives on the company’s internal intranet, and was obtained by The Post courtesy of an anti-woke whistleblower.

“Our language matters. And like our diverse culture of respect, equity, and inclusion, the words and terms we use as communicators continue to evolve and become more culturally competent — reflecting our values and intersectional global workforce. To communicate with empathy, we recommend you use the most inclusive terminology,” the guide declares in a preamble.

People reflected in the window of JPMorgan Chase headquarters on Park Avenue, midtown Manhattan, New York City on July 13, 2012

Employees should avoid gendered terms like “man hours” and “manpower” and instead use “labor hours” and “workforce.”

References to “good schools” and “good neighborhoods” are to be replaced by the term “well-resourced.” Instead of “blacklist,” the firm recommends “disallow list.” Company “pow-wows” — which could upset Native Americans — are also a no-no.

The glossary delves into geopolitics, suggesting employees be sure to refer to the “war in Ukraine” — and refrain from calling it a “conflict.”

The glossary offered no explanation.

Other verboten terms include “cakewalk.”

“Like ‘white glove treatment,’ this term is rooted in the history and mistreatment of enslaved African Americans in the United States. Instead use ‘easy to do or achieve,'” The bank noted. The phrase comes from a pre-Civil War dance once performed by slaves.

Even compliments can get you into trouble. The word “articulate” is objectionable “when used to compliment members of certain communities. The remark suggests that the person in question is expected to be less competent, intelligent or well-spoken.”

A man walking past the JP Morgan Chase World Headquarters on Park Avenue in New York, July 13, 2012

The glossary is also replete with bloated definitions of woke warhorses like “microaggressions,” which it notes are “everyday verbal, nonverbal and environmental slights, snubs, insults actions, remarks or questions that — whether intentional or unintentional — communicate hostile, derogatory or negative messages to a person or group based in whole or in part upon the community they align with or belong to.”

Company insiders dismissed the woke words as noise.

“They are creating unnecessary friction and it’s not helping anyone,” a senior JPMorgan executive told The Post — insisting that behind the scenes the bank was still committed to the quality and merit of its people and products.

“There is nobody internally that takes any of this seriously — at the end of the day this is a bank. There is an enormous DEI infrastructure and they have no results to show.”

JPMorgan has long boasted about its DEI bonafides. The company maintains a full webpage dedicated showing their support for the movement. In 2020, as violent Black Lives Matter riots raged across the country, the company announced a $30 billion commitment to “advance economic inclusion among Black, Hispanic and Latino customers.”

A screenshot of the JP Morgan woke style guide.

“People should oppose DEI because it is the layer of professional (and well paid) racial grievance bureaucrats that have been inserted into every profession, not to improve the true goal of that organization, but to create racialized struggle sessions,” said Jason Curtis Anderson, policy director of the nonprofit One City Rising.

A rep for JPMorgan insisted the glossary has existed internally at the company since 2021 and that following its suggestions was “entirely voluntary.”

Some of the offensive terms highlighted by JPMorgan include:

Cakewalk White List, Black List Conflict in Ukraine Disabled Good school, Good neighborhood

Grandfathered Illegal Immigrant Man Hours, Manpower

Crackdown, crack-the-whip

A local’s travel guide to Austin: what to eat, see and do in three days

Standout spots include food truck parks, honky-tonk hangouts and Lady Bird’s wildflower sanctuary

A ustin has become one of the most popular places in the US to move to, and also to visit. Droves of people descend on the city in March for the South by Southwest tech, film and music festival and in the fall for the Austin City Limits music festival. And Austin is one of the top five destinations in the US for bachelorette parties. Don’t let the bachelorettes scare you away, though. Austin is a great place to spend a few days, so long as you do it like a local.

My family and I moved to Austin 12 years ago, after living in New York for many years. I’ve also lived in Washington DC , the San Francisco Bay Area and Philadelphia. Austin has a feel all of its own: it has a world-class music scene, great food that now goes well beyond Tex-Mex and barbecue, Texas history and fun shopping and museums – all with less hassle than bigger cities in the US.

Here’s my guide to a long weekend there. In addition to picks for adults, I’ve included some recommendations for families that our kids (now teenagers) have loved through the years. And I’m vegetarian, so I’ve chosen some of the city’s best veggie eats options. Don’t worry, my meat-eating wife made sure that I included great barbecue choices, too.

Day 1: Pool party & pickles

Start your day with a walk or run on the trail at Town Lake (it’s officially labeled on maps as Lady Bird Lake, but locals refer to it as Town Lake). This 10-mile (16km) trail on both sides of a dammed portion of Texas’s Colorado River (a different Colorado River than the bigger and more famous one) is tree-shaded, beautiful and one of Austinites’ favorite places to exercise. If you have time, walk through Zilker Park, which is right next to the trail. If you have kids, go to the new and very fun playground at Butler Park, complete with a splash pad just up the path from the playground.

Austin was one of the cities that started the food truck scene in the US several decades ago, and now there are more than 2,000 food trucks in the city. Some are located in trailer parks that have multiple truck options and picnic table seating. After your morning at Town Lake and Zilker Park, have lunch at the Picnic food truck park, or the nearby original location of local favorite Chuy’s (the Tex-Mex chain is now expanding throughout the US). Other great lunch options include Green Mesquite and Carpenters Hall .

In the afternoon, go for a swim at Barton Springs Pool . Open year-round, this massive basin measures three acres and is fed by underground natural springs. It’s open throughout the day, and it’s free before 8am and after 9pm.

Head back to your hotel or Airbnb for a rest, and then get ready for dinner. Tonight is casual: barbecue at Terry Black’s , or if you’re vegan, the food truck Rollin Smoke for a fantastic vegan barbecue sandwich made with baby portobello mushrooms, spicy slaw, barbecue sauce and pickles. It’s my favorite vegan barbecue sandwich in Austin (who says you can’t have barbecue if you’re veggie?), and it’s located in a food truck park with beautiful old trees shading the tables. Rollin Smoke has very good meat options, too (I’m told).

A bearded man hands a wrapped meal to a customer from a food truck.

If you have young children, head to Phil’s Icehouse . They have burgers and a full playground where the kids can play before or after dinner. Just don’t put them on the spinning flower after the meal. And be sure to get some ice-cream after dinner at Amy’s Ice Creams , a longtime favorite of Austinites. Amy’s is located next to Phil’s, and it’s so good we had an Amy’s truck serve dessert at our wedding.

After dinner, head out to see some music at one of Austin’s many local music venues. One of our favorites is the Continental Club . There’s a main club downstairs and the intimate Continental Gallery upstairs, where you can see local musicians in a cozy space. Other great venues include C-Boy’s and the new Moody Amphitheater . For full local music listings on any night, check the Austin Chronicle . And if it’s summer, look to see if Blues on the Green has a free concert that night. If you have kids, take them to the free Rock the Park concert series, produced by local radio station KUTX.

Day 2: Breakfast tacos, books & bats

Start your day back at the lake with a rowing workout that’s almost, but not quite, on the lake. Rō Fitness is a local studio that has outdoor rowing classes by the water. It’s way more fun than working out at an indoor studio.

You’ll need fuel after your workout. Grab a breakfast taco at Veracruz or Tacodeli or Tamale House East . Breakfast tacos are an Austin staple (they are to Austin as bagels are to New York), and all three of these places have delicious options.

Today is a shopping day. Start out at BookPeople , one of the greatest bookstores in the US. It’s locally owned and independent, but the size of a superstore. BookPeople also dares to take a stand on issues, including being one of two bookstores that recently sued Texas state officials over a newly passed book ban law. It has an excellent kids section, and organizes live readings by kids’ authors.

After you’ve gotten your book fix, head across the street to Waterloo Records , one of the best record stores in the US. Waterloo carries new and used vinyl, CDs and merchandise from rock to jazz to local Texas music. For more shopping options, head over to the stores along South Congress Avenue and South First Street (including Roadhouse Relics , a neon art store and gallery that is one of our favorites), and if you want to go thrifting, our teens say Austin Pets Alive Thrift and Texas Thrift are the best.

Steve Sachs shops for music at Waterloo Records in Austin.

After all of the shopping, it’s time for lunch. If you’re near BookPeople and Waterloo, head over to Soup Peddler, a local place for homemade soups, smoothies and fantastic grilled cheese sandwiches (trivia: Soup Peddler got its name because the founder started out delivering homemade soup by bike before opening full store locations). Or if you’re near South Congress and South First, go to the food trucks on South First or Underdog or Fresa’s .

As you’re heading back to rest up, grab an ice-cream at Amy’s, a gelato at Dolce Neve or cupcakes at Sugar Mama’s .

Some good dinner options for tonight include Loro , Suerte or Este . And if you’re looking for a vegetarian option, one of my favorite veggie restaurants is Bouldin Creek Cafe . It’s casual, with a great menu that includes vegan chips and queso. If it’s nice out, take a seat on the patio.

Tonight’s activity could be going to see the bats at the Congress Street Bridge. Austin has the largest urban bat colony in North America, and in season they live in one of the bridges that crosses the Colorado River (they migrate to Mexico in the cooler weather). Bat-watching is a lot more fun than you might imagine from horror movies (and these bats look more like birds than vampire bats). If you’re not in the mood for bats, head to the legendary Broken Spoke . Get there early for dance lessons, then hoof it at this classic Texas honky-tonk.

Day 3: Live oaks & Lady Bird wildflowers

It’s your last day in Austin, and it’s a good one for visiting a museum. Some of our favorites include the Bullock Museum to learn all about the history of our state (bonus fact: Texas was once its own country , and some people want it to be its own country again ). If you’re a fan of 1960s history, visit the excellent LBJ Presidential Library , which is the home of the 36th president’s papers. It has good exhibits on the US civil rights movement and 1960s US history in general. Another excellent museum option is the Blanton Museum of Art , or you could tour the Texas capitol (Austin is, after all, the capital of Texas). If you’re a nature fan, head to the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center . And if you have kids, the Thinkery is an excellent children’s museum.

For lunch, it’s time for more barbecue (you’re in Austin, don’t fight it). Two terrific barbecue trucks are Mickelthwait and LeRoy and Lewis . And LeRoy and Lewis has another of my favorite vegetarian barbecue options: cauliflower burnt ends.

In the afternoon, head back to Town Lake. This time, get out on the water by renting a kayak, stand up paddleboard or paddle boat (a kid-friendly option). If you have time and energy for a drink, head over to the ABGB for happy hour. They have a great beer selection, lots of outdoor seating and local bands playing music.

Two kayaks float in a large body of water.

For your farewell dinner, a few of our favorite restaurants that are a bit on the fancier end are Hestia , Uchi or the Lenoir wine garden, where dinner is served under live oak trees more than a hundred years old. And for a fantastic vegan option, go to Fabrik for a seven-course vegan tasting menu. You’ll need a reservation well in advance (they’re currently booking four to six weeks out). And for your final night in Austin, head out to another music venue. Or if you have kids, take them to the Austin favorite Peter Pan Mini Golf , which has been around for 75 years, or check Do512 Family for family events that are happening the dates you’re in town.

Question Time

When is the best time of year to visit austin.

There’s no dispute: it’s hot in the summer in Austin . A great time to visit is between October and May. From June through September, many days will be over 100F. If you’re here in the summer, spend lots of time at the Barton Springs pool.

Is Austin expensive?

Austin hotels can be expensive during big events like South by Southwest or the Formula One weekend. But for most dates, it’s less expensive than larger cities like New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco.

Will I need a car to get around Austin?

Most of the places that I’ve recommended are within walking distance from downtown. You can also rent bikes and scooters to get around. Austin’s public transportation is primarily through local buses, which can take you further out if needed. And car-share options are easy as well.

Travel Hotels Chicago MICHELIN Keys

haflong tour guide

On April 24, 2024, the MICHELIN Guide announced its very first Key hotels in the United States — a brand new distinction recognizing the most outstanding hotels in the country. We're thrilled to report that in Chicago, eight hotels earned at least One Key. Of those, half make their home in the kinds of historic buildings that give this city its well-earned reputation as one of the most architecturally distinguished cities in the country. Follow Michigan Avenue north from the heart of the Loop to the Gold Coast and you’ll pass within two blocks of all but one of them. The Chicago Athletic Association sits within a Venetian Gothic landmark. The Gwen makes its home in a storied 1929 Art Deco skyscraper. The Pendry sets up shop in the masterpiece that is the 1929 Art Deco Carbide & Carbon Building. And the lower floors of the Viceroy make use of the meticulously-preserved, 1920s-vintage Cedar Hotel. There are Key hotels too in newer builds, among them the Peninsula (with uniformed bellboys and staffers who seem to know the name of each individual guest) and the Waldorf Astoria , its lobby a marble marvel. Below, explore the map and scroll down for more about each of the MICHELIN Guide’s eight hotels in Chicago.

The Bazaar Guide to New Orleans

Just in time for Jazz Fest

Even if you can’t make it to Jazz Fest, the city’s busy cultural calendar means there’s really never a bad time to plan a trip to the Crescent City. Ahead, Harper’s Bazaar shares our favorite spots to eat, drink, dance, and shop in New Orleans. Laissez les bon temps rouler —let the good times roll!

.css-1pfpin{font-family:NewParisTextBook,NewParisTextBook-roboto,NewParisTextBook-local,Georgia,Times,Serif;font-size:1.75rem;line-height:1.2;margin:0rem;padding-left:5rem;padding-right:5rem;}@media(max-width: 48rem){.css-1pfpin{padding-left:2.5rem;padding-right:2.5rem;}}@media(min-width: 64rem){.css-1pfpin{font-size:2.5rem;line-height:1.2;}}.css-1pfpin b,.css-1pfpin strong{font-family:inherit;font-weight:bold;}.css-1pfpin em,.css-1pfpin i{font-style:normal;font-family:NewParisTextItalic,NewParisTextItalic-roboto,NewParisTextItalic-local,Georgia,Times,Serif;} WHERE TO STAY

One of the greatest things about New Orleans is that there’s no shortage of gorgeous hotels to host you. A personal favorite of mine is Hotel Saint Vincent —a former orphanage turned mod-inspired abode (and also where I happened to get married)—tucked away in the quiet Lower Garden District and home to one of the best pools in the city. Those who want to be closer the action (i.e., the reckless abandon of Bourbon Street) can opt for lodging closer to the French Quarter, where Expedia-approved properties such as the Eliza Jane , the Kimpton , and the newly renovated Four Seasons New Orleans provide not only top-tier hospitality, but also the ultimate convenience: being able to step out the door and join any party that’s passing by. New Orleans has a subtle duality that one notices once they get to know the city better—and part of its beauty is being able to switch between the lavish celebrations and the more laid-back, slow-to-start Southern mornings.

WHERE TO DRINK

There’s no such thing as a bad drink in New Orleans. Whether you’re looking for an artisanal cocktail or a glass of funky natural wine, anywhere you stumble into will likely have the libation you’re looking for. For those who want to spend the day with a bottle and the best damn charcuterie plate you’ll ever have, head to Bachannal in the city’s hipster haunt of Bywater. If it’s time for happy hour, Luke’s downtown has a perfect French 75 (with cognac! the NOLA way!) paired with a dozen fresh oysters, and there’s Peychaud’s or Columns Bar for dirty martinis done right. Paradise Lounge at Hotel Saint Vincent also makes a mean Italian margarita and rosemary spritz, and the roof of the Ace Hotel is the perfect spot for a nightcap (and makes a top-shelf espresso martini).

WHERE TO EAT

Don’t tell New York, but to me, New Orleans is America’s best food city. While on a macro level the town is known for the obvious contenders (beignets! gumbo! po’boys!), it also has so many hidden gems from local chefs aiming to reinvent how the world sees Creole cuisine. Be sure to visit Acme’s Oyster House for traditional New Orleans eats, (get a dozen chargrilled, add hot sauce, and ask for extra bread), Elizabeth’s in Bywater for a perfect Southern breakfast (praline bacon: Don’t ask, just do!), and Cafe Sbisa for chicken and (sweet potato!) waffles and sinfully good shrimp and grits. For chef-driven sandwiches bigger than your head, head to Turkey & the Wolf ; or for a gorgeous weekend brunch in a dreamy garden, opt for Cafe Amelie . Satsuma is great for vegetarians or anyone hoping for bit of lighter fare, and Dakar has been highlighted nationwide for its take on Senegalese cuisine. Cafe du Monde and its pillowy-soft beignets are, of course, nonnegotiable.

WHERE TO DANCE

Technically, the party can be wherever you want it to be in New Orleans, but for the sake of brevity, the best place to find live music in the city would be anywhere on Frenchman Street. Nightlife staples include DBA New Orleans , the Spotted Cat Music Club , the Rabbit Hole , and Treme Hideaway , among many others .

WHERE TO SHOP

New Orleans is a city for music lovers and eccentric dressers. Any vinyl fan will have a field day sorting through vintage LPs at NOLA Mix Records in the Lower Garden District, while independent boutiques like Lekha , Elysian by Emily Morrison , and Saint Claude Social Club provide provide eclectic pieces for your home and wardrobe. Nestled inside of Hotel Saint Vincent, ByGeorge is perfect for any luxury lover: The mini boutique sells resortwear and accessories from brands like Loewe, Dries Van Noten, Christopher John Rogers, and Rabanne.
