Discover Our Huacachina Tour From Lima

The Huacachina tour is undoubtedly one of the best day tours in Lima you can do when in Peru’s capital. It’s an unbeatable mix of culture and adventure that guarantees a lot of fun.

In our tour, we visit the Hacienda Caravedo and the famous Huacachina oasis. In the former you get to try local Pisco whereas in the latter you will enjoy an adrenaline rush during the sand-buggy and sandboarding tour.

Read on to find out more about our traveler’s favorite tour in Lima.

Huacachina Tour Options with Exploor Peru

You can choose whether you want to do the Huacachina tour from Lima by bus or in a private car.

Feel free to check out our TripAdvisor to see more reviews from our travelers.

Tour By Bus

If you choose the option to go by bus, our guide will pick you up at around 5:10 am and head to the bus station with you. The bus ride to Ica takes 4.5 hours. Once you arrive in Huacachina , our driver will be waiting for you to take you to the next sites.

At 7 or 7:30 pm, depending on the availability of the bus, you’ll return to Lima and arrive around midnight. Afterwards, our guide will accompany you to your hotel in a taxi.

Tour By Car

If you prefer going in a private car, you’ll be picked up at around 6:00 am and head south towards Ica for around 4 hours. On the way, we can make a stop for you to get some breakfast.

Going in a private car will give you more flexibility and will make the entire trip more comfortable. This option is a little more expensive but in our eyes it’s absolutely worth it because the overall experience is better.

Huacachina Tour Sites

Tour at hacienda caravedo.

During the guided tour you’ll visit the beautiful Hacienda Caravedo which is famous for its Pisco. Important to know is that, Pisco, is the most popular liquor of the country and the national drink, Pisco Sour, will be made out of that.

Therefore you’ll not only discover the Hacienda, but on top of that enjoy a Pisco tasting in South America’s oldest continuously operating distillery.

hacienda caravedo and two locals on horses

The Hacienda Caravedo offers many spots that are perfect for taking pictures.

Afterwards, you’ll have more time to explore Caravedo’s properties and take pictures. The Hacienda has various beautiful spots, our guide will make sure to show you all of them.

Next, we’ll head to a local restaurant where you can enjoy some delicious traditional lunch and regular dishes.

Huacachina Oasis (Sandboarding & Sand-Buggy Tour During Sunset)

Now, let’s come to the highlight of the tour: Huacachina . It’s a small village built around a natural desert oasis. As the temperatures are warm all year round, Huacachina is a very popular tourist destination.

Apart from the beautiful oasis, it’s known for its adventure activities in the Huacachina desert. It’s safe to say that because of this destination, sandboarding in Peru has become a lot more popular. And this is also what we are here for!

In the 2-hour sand-buggy and sandboarding tour, you better prepare yourself to have a lot of fun. Speeding through some of Peru’s highest sand dunes will feel like being on a rollercoaster!

couple on sandbuggy in huacachina desert

Speeding in a sand buggy in Huacachina’s desert is a thrilling experience that will make you scream for sure.

After a while, the driver will make a stop on top of a dune to get the boards out and give you a short introduction of how to sandboard. 2-3 turns and we’ll move on to another dune.

Once we’re done with sandboarding, we’ll drive a little deeper in the desert to find a calm spot to enjoy the sunset. This is another perfect opportunity for pictures.

Just so you know, our guide will transform into your photographer without you even noticing it.

For this tour, we recommend you bring sunscreen, sun glasses and a light sweater as it might get a little chilly once the sun sets.

If you want to combine this tour with the Ballestas Islands and the Paracas National Reserve, we recommend our 2-Day Paracas & Huacachina tour .

Lima to Huacachina: The Best Day Trip from Lima, Peru

Last Updated on March 26, 2024 by Tori Pines

Lima, Peru is a fun city in and of itself, but if you’re staying in the city for a few days then you’ll want to devote a day or two to explore some nearby areas. The best day trip from Lima is from Lima to Huacachina. It’s close enough to do in a day, it is an incredibly unique destination, there’s so much to do and has delicious food. It doesn’t get better than that!

I spent two weeks in Peru and the day trip from Lima to Huacachina was easily one of my favorite days of the entire trip. I would do it over and over again and recommend the experience to anyone I know, and to you of course! And you can trust me, I did a lot of research when planning out this experience because I wanted it to be the best possible, so here’s what I found.

This post may contain affiliate links for activities, destinations and products that I love, and think you will too!

Table of Contents

What is huacachina, where is huacachina, how far is it from lima to huacachina, bonus: multi-day tour, pisco vineyards, what do you do on a tour from lima to huacachina, go sandboarding, ride a dune buggy, take photos, paddleboat on the oasis, watch the sunset over the dunes, take a pisco vineyards tour, try a pisco sour, where to eat in huacachina, where to stay in huacachina.

Huacachina is a desert oasis town in Peru. An oasis literally means “a small patch of vegetation surrounded by desert”, and they are pretty rare, especially in the Americas! It’s really just a little lake with a small town surrounding it in the desert. And while it is a great little spot to visit, it has become especially popular thanks to the beautiful “Insta” worthy photos of this spot. I’m one who fell for these shots, but I’m so glad I did because it is so much more than a pretty picture.

Huacachina is located in the Ica Desert, right next to the city of Ica. It is located close to the coast and is south of Lima.

To drive from Lima to Huacachina will take about 4.5 hours. This will obviously depend on the amount of stops you wish to make, but without stops it is about that long.

How do you get from Lima to Huacachina?

The cheapest way to get from Lima to Huacachina is via public bus. This option will take about 5 hours and will cost less than $20. However, I do not recommend this option as the public buses are really meant for locals. They do not pick you up from your hotel, only speak Spanish, and are not as clean or safe as the tourist bus options explained further below.

You could also rent a car for your day trip from Lima to Huacachina. This option is also fairly inexpensive because you can get a car for as little as $25 per day. However, you will likely have to pick up the car from the airport which is about an hour in the opposite direction from Huacachina.

Also, you will have to be completely comfortable with driving in Peru, reading street signs, filling up on gas, and figuring out where to go. It is an option, but probably not a good choice for most tourists.

huacachina lima tour

I would only recommend taking a day trip from Lima to Huacachina by taking a day tour with a tour company. This option is the most safe, convenient and stress-free option. There are several tour companies to choose from, but I highly recommend this tour from Peru Hop . It is the tour I took and would take time and time again!

Fair warning, it will be a LONG day! 18 hours to be exact! The tour company will pick you up from your hotel in Lima very early, around 5am. You will ride the comfortable bus to and from Huacachina, with a stop in Paracas. And the cost of the tour will include a tour guide, a boat ride in Paracas and a dune buggy/sand boarding tour in Huacachina. All you will have to pay extra for is food; everything else is included!

Our tour guide was amazing. He spoke perfect English, was extremely organized, and gave us great recommendations along the way. You can read more about our first-hand experience here!

So the whole point of this article is to help you plan a day trip from Lima to Huacachina, not a multi-day trip, but I wanted to make you aware that multi-day tours are an option as well, if you want to visit both Lima and Huacachina, but also see other places around Peru!

I would personally recommend using G Adventures for any and all of your time exploring Peru (or South America in general, honestly!). The company is all-around amazing. The prices are very competitive, the service is outstanding and the tours are incredibly thorough and let you see so much of the country and learn the culture. We used them for an 8 day tour after our time in Lima, they’re one of the best Inca Trail tour companies !

G Adventures offers two tours that stop in Huacachina. There’s a short 5-day tour or a longer 11-day tour option. Either could be great choices for your Peru adventures!

Tori in the desert of Huacachina on a day trip from Lima to Huacachina

What stops can you make from Lima to Huacachina?

Most of the way between Lima and Huacachina is made up of local communities and not places tourists would want to visit. However, there are a few major stops to make along the way.

First and foremost is Paracas, a small coastal town near the Ballestas Islands . These islands are just a quick boat ride away from town and are a must visit on your day trip from Lima to Huacachina.

Known as the Galapagos of Peru, the islands are home to wild penguins (how stinking cool!?!?!?!), fur seals, sea lions and many birds including the Guano. The boat tour will take you around the islands where you are sure to see all of these beautiful animals and more. The animals are completely wild and not harmed in any way, we just get to watch them living their lives on the islands from a safe distance.

Also in the town of Paracas are some great little restaurants and a few hotels to choose from if you wish to stay longer. We had a delicious lunch here on our way from Lima to Huacachina; it actually was one of the best meals of our trip!

huacachina lima tour

Another popular stop along the way from Lima to Huacachina would be the Pisco Vineyards in the area. The most popular ones to visit are near the town of Ica and not far from Huacachina.

Pisco is a type of liquor that is made in Peru and is most well known for its starring role in the delicious Pisco Sour. So stop by the vineyards to see the pisco being made and learn all about the drink and the process.

Tori and Alex in the desert of Huacachina on a day trip from Lima to Huacachina

Okay so clearly my favorite option for a day trip from Lima to Huacachina is on an organized tour with Peru Hop . So, here are the details on what that tour includes!

First off, they pick you up directly from your hotel in Lima! You don’t have to worry about a thing. Then ride in a large, comfortable, air-conditioned bus to the first stop, Paracas! And you can sleep along the way since it will be super early.

On the way to Paracas, the guide will provide you with lunch menus for the recommended restaurant. If you choose to eat there, they will pre-order your meal so everything is super fast and you will have time to sit down and eat in Paracas!

Once you arrive, you will have a few minutes to grab coffee, drinks or snacks and use the bathroom if you need to. Then you will walk a few minutes to the port with your group and jump on a boat tour to the Ballestas Islands. The tour is about 2 hours, is so much fun and has stunning views of the water and islands. (You will also get a sneak peek of the Nazca lines, one of the best ancient ruins in Peru! )

huacachina lima tour

After the boat ride, head to your sit-down lunch and enjoy some Peruvian classics like Aji de Gallina and Causa to name a few. (Make sure to read a full list of best Peruvian dishes or Peru food facts )

Then head to the final destination, Huacachina!! You’ll immediately walk out of town and up into the desert to jump on the dune buggy. That will be your ride for the next hour or so, so get comfy and fasten your seatbelt, it’s going to be a bumpy ride!

The dune buggy ride was way more intense than I had expected, and WAY more fun. It was a thrilling ride up and down the sand dunes of the Icas Desert. You’ll even catch air a few times. It was a little terrifying and a lot amazing. You’ll have a blast and have a smile on your face the entire time.

huacachina lima tour

Along the way you will stop a few times for a chance to go sandboarding. You’ll lay on your stomach on the board and ride down the super tall sand dunes. It looked terrifying at first and I was convinced I wouldn’t try it. But once a few people went down I realized you don’t go that fast. And you can control the speed with your feet. So I gave it a go and had so much fun. We had the chance to do it about 4 times.

End the adventure with a stop to see the sunset over the dunes for the perfect end to an amazing day.

On your way back to the bus grab a super quick dinner for the road. Then you’ll be on your way back to Lima where you can take a nap in the bus before you return.

Alex sandboarding in the desert of Huacachina on a day trip from Lima to Huacachina

What are the best things to do in Huacachina?

Huacachina offers so much to do in such a small little town inside a desert! Here’s some of my favorite things to do!

The best thing to do in Huacachina is to go sandboarding. The pros stand up on the board and ride down. But most tourists lay on their stomachs on the board and slide down the dunes. It’s exhilarating and so much fun. You’ll be smiling the entire time.

In order to get out into the desert to go sandboarding you’ll have to first hop on a Dune Buggy. These things can fly up and down the dunes and catch some crazy air. Hold on tight because it is a wild ride!

Tori and Alex on the dune buggy in the desert of Huacachina on a day trip from Lima to Huacachina

Face it, Huacachina is an Instagrammers paradise. The desert’s huge sand dunes and beautiful oasis below make for the picture-perfect backdrop. So walk up the dunes and get that famous shot!

For a more laid-back activity, rent a paddle boat and relax on the water! They cost about 37 soles per hour and you can just hop on from the shore and ride around!

huacachina lima tour

One of the most memorable parts of the day trip from Lima to Huacachina was watching the sunset over the dunes. The sky lit up in the most beautiful colors as the sun disappeared behind the dunes. It was a magical end to an exhilarating day.

I mentioned this above, but visiting one of the Pisco Vineyards would be another great thing to do during your trip from Lima to Huacachina.  There are some super close to Huacachina. So it is definitely something that you could plan to do while in town.

Even if you don’t visit the vineyards, be sure to try a famous Pisco Sour while you are in town. They’re fairly similar to a whiskey sour that’s popular in the states. But personally I liked it made with Pisco SO much more! It was delicious. And be sure to try some local Peruvian food to go with it!

huacachina lima tour

Speaking of Peruvian food, here are some restaurant recommendations while in town.

  • La Casa de Bamboo
  • Desert Nights
  • Restaurant Oasis de América

huacachina lima tour

Looking to spend more than just a day in Huacachina? Spend the night so you can have more time exploring the Oasis! There will not be any super fancy five-star hotels, but here are some good options for staying the night.

  • Carola Lodge
  • Bamboo House
  • Bananas Adventure Hostel
  • Hotel El Huacachinero
  • Ecocamp Huacachina

If you are on the fence about taking a day trip from Lima to Huacachina, get off the fence and book the trip! You will not regret it. It was easily one of  the best things we did in Peru, and an experience we will never forget.

Lima to Huacachina: A Desert Oasis Day Trip

View of Huacachina Desert Oasis from Above

Are you looking to visit the famous Huacachina desert oasis in Peru? Huacachina is Peru and South America’s only natural desert oasis, and many visitors to Peru are adding these unique sand dunes and lake to their must-visit list. Huacachina is a small village located 10 minutes from the city of Ica and around 5 hours from Lima. This guide covers how to get from Lima to Huacachina and includes the best sandboarding, dune buggy and sunset tours, day trips, things to do, where to stay and more!

How far is Lima from Huacachina?

Huacachina is 190 miles (307 km) and around a 4 hour 30-minute drive from Lima.

Lima to Huacachina Desert Oasis Tour

How to get from Lima to Huacachina

There are several options to get to Huacachina ranging from budget to luxury.  Discover the routes and find the travel option best suited to you.

Travel by Public Bus (budget) Lima to Huacachina

The cheapest option to travel from Lima to Huacachina is by public bus transportation with Grupo Palomino . Buses depart regularly from Lima Bus Station and terminate in the town of Ica. From Ica, Huacachina is only a short taxi ride away. On average, the trip will cost around $20 (USD) per person, including the taxi fare.

Huacachina at sunset

Travel by Private Bus (organised tour)

Many tour operators provide full-day and multi-day trips from Lima to Huacachina. These typically include popular sights such as the Nazca Lines, Paracas, Ballestas Islands and Pisco tastings, or they can take visitors directly to the Huacachina desert. There are various choices which I explain below.

Peru Hop – Lima to Huacachina

Peru Hop is the only direct bus option from Lima to Huacachina, and the journey takes around 5 hours. The company is a popular choice for travellers exploring Peru due to the number of route options available throughout the country. It’s worth checking if Huacachina is a stop on your preferred route (for example, Lima to Cusco). For a dedicated trip from Lima to Huacachina prices start at $129 per person.

Paracas Harbour on Tour

Viator – Lima to Huacachina

Viator has a number of day trips departing from Lima that break up the journey time and stop at popular sights during the trip. These tours have a guide and are jam-packed with activities maximising your time. On average day tours cost upwards of $100 per person.

Get Your Guide – Lima to Huacachina

This reputable firm offers full-day and multi-day trips to suit any budget. The majority of tours depart from Lima. But if you find yourself staying overnight, there are daily activities you can book like sandboarding, dune buggy tours and visiting the Nazca Lines too.

Ballestas Islands Boat Tour from Paracas

How much is a private car or taxi from Lima to Huacachina? (luxury)

The option to head to Huacachina at your own pace or schedule is possible by booking a private transfer or car . It’s not the cheapest way, approximately $50 per person one-way, but it is the most flexible. You can decide on pick-up and drop-off points, and where to stop along the way to make the most of your trip.

Lima to Huacachina Tour Ticket

Can you take a flight from Lima to Huacachina?

It is possible to take a flight, but I do not recommend this option. The closest airport to Huacachina is Ayacucho Airport, and the flight takes around 1 hour from Lima. From the airport, you must drive or take a bus to Ica which takes between 5-7 hours. The town of Ica to Huacachina is then a short taxi ride away.

Full Day Tour: Paracas, Ballestas Islands, Ica & Huacachina Desert Oasis

Group Boat Tour of Ballestas Islands from Paracas

If you don’t have the time to spend the night in Huacachina or wish to visit for the day only, a full-day tour is for you. It’s one of the most popular ways to travel from Lima to Huacachina. The tour operator takes care of all the logistics, so you can relax and enjoy the trip.

A day tour option is what I decided to do, and although it was long and tiring, it was worth it. We were picked up at 5am and arrived back to Lima at 11pm, so be prepared for an action-packed day.

Paracas & Ballestas Islands

Sea lions and birds on Ballestas Islands, Peru

Our first stop on the tour was the Port of Paracas. The village is a popular holiday spot with resorts, restaurants and beaches. But, the main draw for visitors is the boat trips to the Ballestas Islands. Nicknamed the poor man’s Galápagos, the Ballestas Islands are brimming with wildlife such as sea lions, penguins, seals and birds. There is also an opportunity to marvel at the ‘Candelabra of the Andes’, a prehistoric geoglyph etched into the side of a hill. It is similar to those found at the Nazca Lines. I thoroughly enjoyed getting out on the water and soaking in all the sights.

Ica & Pisco Tasting Tour

Nietto Pisco Winery in Ica

The next stop was a drive through the Pisco vineyards and a visit to the Nietto winery for a traditional lunch and a Pisco tasting experience. The winery has beautiful decor, and the tasting experience was also fun and interactive. The host was very knowledgeable, and it was great to learn about the process and different types of Pisco they produce. I particularly recommend trying the cremas de Pisco. These creamy liqueurs were my favourite and there are a lot of flavours to try out. There is also a small marketplace selling various souvenirs, Peruvian crafts and Nietto Pisco.

Restaurant at Nietto

Sandboarding & Dune Buggy Tour in Huacachina

Dune Buggy Tour at Huacachina from Lima

As soon as the bus arrived in Huacachina we headed directly to the desert oasis. We met with our tour guide and hopped into a 4WD dune buggy to enjoy a fast-paced tour of the dunes . It felt like riding a roller-coaster, racing through the sand, up and down the dunes. Partly through, we stopped to enjoy some sandboarding down a rather large dune. This tour didn’t allow you to stand on the board (like snowboarding) but rather lie on your stomach and slide down. Towards the end, the sun was beginning to set, and the beauty of the desert was quite spectacular. We had around an hour following the dune buggy tour to explore the oasis on our own and take pictures before boarding the bus back to Lima.

Lima to Huacachina Day Tour

With this tour, we packed a lot of sightseeing into our day, and I can’t recommend it enough if you’d like to head from Lima to Huacachina.

Where to Stay in Huacachina

Many travellers wish to stay 1-2 nights in Huacachina to soak up the famous sunsets and experience the nightlife. Here are some of my accommodation recommendations of where to stay based on traveller reviews.

Budget: Banana’s Adventure Hostel is a popular adult-only hostel on the shores of the desert lake. It features an outdoor pool, Wi-Fi, breakfast and a selection of private or shared rooms to suit your budget.

Mid-Range: Hotel El Huacachinero is centrally located in the Huacachina Oasis, close to bars and restaurants. Each room has a private bathroom, and the hotel has an outdoor pool and offers a continental breakfast and dune buggies and sandboards for rent. The hotel is also part of a travel sustainability program.

Luxury: Hotel Las Dunas is a little slice of luxury in the city of Ica. It’s a short distance from Huacachina and boasts spa facilities, a fitness centre, 2 bars, 3 restaurants and a buffet breakfast. The hotel also has horses and bikes rent.

Group Tour of Huacachina Desert Oasis

  • Catch a beautiful sunset
  • Explore the Oasis
  • Take a boat across the lake

Huacachina was such a memorable place in Peru for me! I stayed for a night or two and had so much fun. Sand boarding, 4X4 touring, exploring the town, partying with fellow hostel people. This is such an iconic place and so beautiful at sunset!

Oh that’s amazing! I’d have liked to have stayed if we had the time.

I’m still so sad I didn’t make it to Huacachina when I was in Peru! This looks like an amazing day and easy enough to manage from Lima. will save this for when I go back.

Yes, definitely one for the next trip!

You are certainly making me wish we put Peru on our coming trip to South America. I can see why you would head out into the Huacachina desert oasis from Lima. We would certainly not want to miss out on the sand boarding, dune buggy ride or the sunset. But I guess we would need to look at an overnight trip if we wanted the sunset on most days. Would be great to visit the Nazca Lines on the same trip.

We were able to catch the sunset during our day trip from Lima, but staying the night would be great!

Info About Our Luxury Buses

Peru hop – #1 bus company in peru.

As well as an unbeatable safety record, Peru Hop is also famous for its punctuality and comfort. In South America, where things often run later than scheduled, we are very proud to say we achieve a 98.5% on-time arrival for each trip.

If comparing Peru Hop to other bus companies, make sure you check their safety record, past accidents, as well as their Tripadvisor page (if they even bother to have one) as often you will find there is a reason why some bus companies have “cheaper” prices than Peru Hop.

Features Of Our Buses
