Formed in 1993 in Orlando, Florida, U.S., the Backstreet Boys became a teen pop sensation in the late ‘90s for their brand of harmony-rich pop music, and continued into the new millennium later selling over 130 million records worldwide.

After undertaking auditions held by ’90’s boyband mogul Lou Pearlman in 1992, Backstreet Boys, consisting of Kevin Richardson, Brian Littrell, Howie Dorough, A.J. McLean, and Nick Carter, officially formed on April 20 1993. The group’s debut live performance was at SeaWorld Orlando and was followed by a string of shows in Florida from shopping malls to high schools. After signing with Zomba/Jive Records in 1994, Backstreet Boys released their 1995 debut album “Backstreet Boys” in Europe and Canada to considerable success. Despite the popular international singles “We’ve Got It Goin’ On” and “I’ll Never Break Your Heart”, the Backstreet Boys didn’t find success in the U.S. until the year after.

The band’s sophomore international release “Backstreet’s Back” coincided with their U.S. debut “Backstreet Boys”, both of which earned considerable chart and sales success. Spawning the hits “Quit Playin’ (With My Heart)”, “As Long as You Love Me”, “Everybody (Backstreet’s Back), and “I’ll Never Break Your Heart”, the U.S. album propelled the group to teen pop stardom, later selling over 14 million copies.

“Millennium” was released in 1999 after a heated debacle with manager Pearlman regarding royalties. The album topped the U.S. album charts with sales of over one million in its first week of release, aided by the singles “I Want It That Way”, “Larger Than Life”, and “Show Me The Meaning of Being Lonely”. After “Christmas Album” was released at the tail end of 1999, and the album “Black & Blue” was issued in 2000 to similar success as its predecessors, the band took a break which lasted until 2004.

Backstreet Boys’ comeback album “Never Gone” arrived in 2005 and marked a change in style for the band however still sold over 10 million copies worldwide. After a subsequent tour and the departure of Richardson, Backstreet Boys returned to the studio. The result of which was “Unbreakable”, released in October 2007, the album debuted at No. seven on the Billboard 200 and was supported by a worldwide tour including Australia, Japan, Asia and Mexico. The band’s seventh studio album “This is Us” arrived two years later in 2009, spawning the hits “Straight Through My Heart” and “Bigger”. “In a World Like This” was issued in 2013 and marked the group’s first self-released album, followed by the documentary movie “Backstreet Boys: Show ‘Em What You’re Made Of” in 2015.

Live reviews

Backstreet Boys, the American vocal group were a household name during their heyday in the mid-90's and now celebrating their 20th anniversary the band continues to play live to their devoted fan base. There are few bands who can boast the same amount of nostalgia as Back Street Boys, and the cheers that lift the roof at their appearance is proof there is still a huge demand to see this iconic group perform their plethora of hits.

Their shows are no longer about the complex dance routines synonymous with the boy band, but moreover the brilliant vocal harmonies on fan favourites such as 'As Long As You Love Me'. The crowd erupts in cheers for classics such as 'I Want It That Way' and 'The One' as they proudly sing along as the boys command the stage and maintain the party anthem.

The finale of 'Backstreet's Back' is an energetic party anthem and the group even breaks out one of the classic dance routines for the special occasion. A concert filled with nostalgic unashamed power pop leaves the audience thrilled.

The Backstreet Boys are the boy band of my generation, so obviously I was going to LOVE LOVE LOVE every moment of their Las Vegas residency. What I did not expect was to be blown away by the sheer talent of it all. BSB can really sing, dance, chit chat, and the songs? the songs are still amazing.

Despite the fact that they're playing in a huge theater, to 7000 people the show felt intimate. They even came into the stands, I was in section 205 and when they came down and I got Nick Carter. I started shrieking because that's my favorite BSB member. So it was wonderful and fun.

Logistically, they played for 90 solid minutes, and had a 2 song encore. They started promptly at 9:30. First song was Show Me The Meaning of Being Lonely and last song (encore) was Eveybody (Backstreet's Back).

I absolutely and totally loved the show and with this I can finally say all my 5th grade dreams have come true.

Oh my good. The Backstreet boys were awesome. They are definitly like a fine wine, they get better with age. They brought out all their hits. It'll definitly have you feeling 13 again. They sing a few songs from their new album (I mean it is the In a world like this tour) If you dont have it go get it. It's a mature album but it definitly has that b ackstreet sound. Watching the guys interact on stage is fun and the crowds energy is crazy. They do a set with instruments, it's impressive. They don't get enough credit for their talent. Oh and don't get me started on the VIP meet and greet. They are so sweet. They do a great job of making each and every fan feel special while moving it along quickly. I can't wait for their next tour.

The backstreet boys were awesome!!! This was my second time seeing them, I went to their concert last year as well. They played a lot of old awesome songs like: Show me the meaning of being lonely, don't want you back, all I have to give, I want it that way and a lot more! But they did play songs from their new album as well. They were also very entertaining to watch. If you're a backstreet boys fan I totally recommend seeing them in concert because I'm a fan and I absolutely loved it and had a great time!

I’ve never screamed so much in my LIFE! They were absolutely incredible and they also did their best to connect with the audience. Amazing showmen and great dancers as well! They dance just like they did in the 90s ❤️ All in all it was a treat and I can’t wait for next time! Last night my childhood dream came true, except it was much better than I ever could have imagined ❤️ BSB for life!!

Amazing show from start to finish. The show felt really intimate even though it was at a big venue. The guys sounded great and showed they can still hit those notes while dancing. They worked hard for this tour and you can tell. All of the dance moves and videos , included with the shows was a surprise and add to the already awesome show, I can’t wait to see them again!!!

This was an absolutely amazing show! BSB did not fail to disappoint. I saw them several years ago when they came to Hershey with NKOTB, and as fantastic as that show was, this one was even better. I already can not wait for them to come back to Philly, and I am definitely purchasing their new album to add to my collection.

The Kevin Richardson Wildlife Sanctuary’s mission is to provide a self-sustaining African carnivore sanctuary for the purposes of wild species preservation. Through education, outreach and funding, the sanctuary’s mission is to bring awareness to the rapid decline of large carnivores in Africa due to habitat loss, human/predator conflict, the illegal bush meat trade, unscrupulous hunting, disease, and illegal trade.

The Kevin Richardson Wildlife Sanctuary transforms the way humans think, interact and behave towards the keeping of large carnivores. The sanctuary’s ultimate goal is to minimise the number of large carnivores being kept in captivity and to highlight the direct link between the cub-petting industry and the ‘canned’ hunting industry, by educating the unsuspecting public to the horrors associated with this unscrupulous practice. Ultimately we would like to see both practices outlawed. The sanctuary aims to maximise efforts towards keeping carnivores in their natural habitats and is currently home not only to lion, but spotted hyena, striped hyena and black leopard.

The lion population occupies less than 20% of its former range in Africa. Numbers are estimated between 15,000 and 30,000 depending on who is asked. More recently scientists have started to settle on a number of 20,000, however more research is needed into the actual numbers. If allowed to carry on declining at the current rate we will have no lions left in the wild in as little as 20 years.

Our vision is to raise awareness about the plight of lions and other carnivores in the wild and help prevent their habitat loss via human encroachment and conflict (revenge killing), unscrupulous hunting and illegal trade. The sanctuary’s efforts are buttressed by its many collaborative efforts with other like-minded international organisations that provide care, support, academic and scientific research and other programmes that support the shared values of the sanctuary.

The sanctuary provides the animals in its care the ability to live out full lives, in an open and natural environment, by providing cutting-edge enrichment programmes and health care. Education of both adults and children are at the bedrock of how the sanctuary aims to accomplish its goals via documentaries, films, social media and tourism.

A Look Back on @KevinRichardson’s Best BSB Live Performances

by Aimes | Oct 3, 2021 | Backstreet Boys , Kevin Richardson , Videos | 0 comments

One thing many of us can agree on in the fandom is that Kevin has not been given near enough solos in the almost 30 year catalogue of music the Backstreet Boys have created.

Ok, so Kevin was on hiatus for 6 or so years…but still. They’ve had 8 albums with him on it. Nowadays, there is definitely more diversity in the musical choices and the voices we hear on the songs.

And I get so excited every time I hear Kevin’s beautiful, smooth, perfect voice. The most exciting piece of that? Getting to see him perform those songs live.

Here’s a look back at my favorite Kevin performances (in no particular order because I can’t choose!):

10,000 Promises (Frankfurt, Germany: 1997)

Many of us in the US may not be familiar with the song 10.000 promises because it was never officially released in the US. This song was released on the international Backstreet’s Back album and the US missed out. Big time. This is one of my all-time favorite Backstreet Boys songs and thankfully I managed to find an imported release of this album so that I was able to hear it. For those of you that do know this song, you might be wondering why this song is being brought up in a Kevin appreciation post. Kevin does not sing lead on this song on the recorded version. Lucky for us, prior to the release, Kevin performed this song live in Frankfurt during a concert. Even better, Kevin sang the whole song as a solo, while playing the piano, and was accompanied by none other than Nick Carter on the drums. If you’ve never heard Kevin sing this one, please take the 10 minutes to watch this video, courtesy of Aline Loiola’sYouTube page. I promise it is worth it.

Nobody but You (BSB Cruise 2018-Millenium Night)

Although we rarely see Kevin getting solos on many of the early albums, Kevin actually did have a solo song on the original Backstreet Boys “red” album which was only released outside of the US. This isn’t a song we get to see the boys perform much anymore, but it was one he did on the earlier tours. However, on the BSB cruise in 2018, when the boys went through basically every album they’d ever put out until then, Kevin did sing this one and it is awesome to see him all on his own on a song that was his own. Check out this clip from SlappySar23’s YouTube page from that cruise.

Back to Your Heart (Tuscaloosa, Alabama 2013 & Backstreet Boys Cruise 2016)

Any time I see Kevin sing this song live, I get emotional. And he tends to also…It’s no wonder he actually does not have a solo on this song on the album version. He can barely sing it without the tears flowing. And for good reason. As he has shared, he wrote this song for his fantastic wife Kristin, at a time when they were split up. The song itself has a lot of meaning in his life.

Thankfully, that love story has progressed nicely, but the emotion and pain he felt at the time is evident not only in the lyrics, but also in any live performance he does of the song. There have been a few really wonderful performances of this one that I couldn’t choose just one to share. Enjoy this performance, from Karah, of Back to Your Heart from the In A World Like This soundcheck in Tuscalossa Alabama, 2013

And this one from the 2016 Cruise, courtesy of sv02’s YouTube page.

Chances (Live in Japan, 2019)

Chances is one of the latest songs the boys have released, from the DNA album. One of my absolute favorite songs the boys have ever done for a variety of reasons.

Part of the genius of this song is having Howie sing in the lower part of his range and Kevin following him singing in the upper part of his range. It’s not what we are used to hearing from them and it is magical. The only problem on this song is that they didn’t let them sing more! Check out this live performance from Japan courtesy of BSBOfficialChina’s YouTube page.

Show Me The Meaning of Being Lonely (IHeart Radio show, 2017)

Another one of my favorites from the boys. I love when each of the boys is given a chance to show off their vocals. And this one in particular just exudes beauty from each of them.

Kevin has such strong vocals every time I’ve heard him do this one live. And thankfully this is a staple in their shows. Such a beautiful song, with a beautiful sentiment and Kevin definitely does it justice every time. Check out this performance from an IHeart radio show they did in 2017 from the Backstreet Boys official youtube page.

I Want It That Way (NKOTBSB concert, Los Angeles, 2011)

The Backstreet Boys and New Kids on the Block toured together for an epic NKOTBSB collaboration. Sadly, this happened while Kevin was on hiatus. Fortunately, Kevin did make an appearance at the Los Angeles show, much to the surprise and delight of a packed arena. Kevin joined the boys during I Want it That Way, popping up on the stage unexpectedly, and giving the most beautiful performance of the iconic and well-known song that I’ve ever heard him give.

Maybe this was partly due to the fact that we had missed the hell out of him, but either way, it was amazing. And all the feels came right along with it. He rejoined the group officially shortly after that. Check out this clip from the Backstreet Boys official site.

I know there are so many more! I’ll be digging in the archives to find them all. In the meantime, I hope you enjoyed this look back on some of the best Kevin live performances.

The Backstreet Boys are giving people what they want -- and more!

AJ McLean, Nick Carter, Howie Dorough, Brian Littrell and Kevin Richardson are returning to the stage this holiday season for a new Las Vegas residency, A Very Backstreet Christmas Party . The singers are excited to perform for their dedicated fans, and as they told ET's Lauren Zima, are even open to an ultimate boy band stadium tour with *NSYNC and 98 Degrees.

"Backstreet boys, *NSYNC, 98 degrees stadium tour?" Carter slyly said, with Littrell calling it "the boys of summer."

With Carter and McLean teaming up with *NSYNC's Joey Fatone and Lance Bass for a Pride event last month , 98 Degrees previously told ET that they would like to join in on the fun as well.

"They should get in on it. I mean, why not, they have a legacy as well," replied Richardson. As for the possibility of a joint tour ever happening, BSB quipped that anything is possible.

"There was a certain nostalgic success behind the NKOTBSB tour which was a blast, but that was just the four of us. Now we are back to the original five," McLean explained. "I know fans have been asking for something like this for the longest time. And look, who knows what the future holds. Right now [our] number one priority for us is the Christmas album, the Christmas residency and then, thank you lord, getting back on the DNA world tour next year and getting back to our fans across the world because they've been waiting patiently."

"The boys are back and yeah, who knows what the future holds," he continued, with Littrell adding, "We get to do this for a living. We get to do something that we love and are passionate about…Other than living for our families, we live for our legacy. This is something that will continue on hopefully for another 28 years."

The Backstreet pride is alive and well as there's no stopping the quintet who announced their 12 live holiday shows at Zappos Theater at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino in November and December.

"We wanna be the Rolling Stones of pop music," Richardson expressed. "Look at the Rolling Stones, they're still out there getting it."

Backstreet Boys, Live Nation Las Vegas and Caesars Entertainment will also donate $1 of every ticket purchased to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Southern Nevada (BGCSNV). Throughout their Backstreet Boys: Larger Than Life residency, BSB donated $180,000 to the organization.

"We are proud to be able to continue that relationship and to be a part of it and to give back during our residency," Carter stated.

Along with a holiday residency, kicking off November 11 and wrapping December 23, the singers are also working on a Christmas album, which they hope to share with their fans soon. The singers have previously released two holiday singles; "Christmas Time" in 1996 and "Christmas Time Again" in 2012.

"We've wanted to do a Christmas album for a long time and 28 years in we're finally getting around to knocking that off the bucket list," Richardson shared. "And with that, it's been over a year since we've been off the road…We thought this would be a great way for us to reconnect with our fans, as well as perform our brand new Christmas album."

The songs will include new takes on Christmas classics as well as original tunes. "The fact that we're finally getting to do a proper album, not just Christmas singles, it's a joyous thing for us," McLean detailed. "And to share this with our families, and obviously we want to make a record that stands the test of time, that people will be listening to every holiday for eons."

As for what fans can expect from A Very Backstreet Christmas Party , well just that, a party!

"Great girls night out. You've been trapped in a cage for a long time this year, and this is the perfect celebration for you to come," Dorough described the shows.

"You can come and party with the Backstreet Boys Vegas style and listen to some classic Christmas songs and then we are going to sprinkle in a lot of more hits," Carter teased. "I think people coming out of this pandemic, we have all kind of had this dark time so everyone wants to get out and we just want to huddle together and socialize and party. And Vegas is one of the best places to do it."

Kevin Richardson on 25 Years of Backstreet Boys on the Charts & the Full Story Behind That Drake Moment

Look at what can happen if you end up at the same restaurant as Drake .

Two weeks ago, Backstreet Boys were in Toronto for a pair of shows on their DNA World Tour — currently making its way around North America — when Kevin Richardson happened to cross paths with the hometown superstar thanks to a fortuitous restaurant recommendation.

Leslie Jordan Recalls Hearing Amy Winehouse's 'Rehab' for the First Time After Sobriety: 'It Made Me So Nervous'

“He’s like, ‘What are you doing here?’” Richardson tells the Billboard Pop Shop Podcast (listen to the full interview below) of being connected by the restaurant staff after they’d met at the American Music Awards and bonded over Kentucky basketball years prior. “I’m like, ‘We got two shows.’ He was like, ‘I would love to come to one of ’em … and I would love to introduce ‘I Want It That Way.’’ I’m like, ‘OK, sure.’ He’s like, ‘Actually no — I would like to perform it.’ I’m like, ‘Wow.’ I said, ‘I’m sure the fellas would have no problem with that.’ So lo and behold, that’s what he did.”

Drake ended up coming out for “I Want It That Way” at one of the two concerts (sorry to the other Toronto show) and making headlines across Canada and the world. You have to hear the full story of Richardson’s run-in — including how he now has a lot of “cred” with his two kids — on the podcast below.

We caught up with Richardson to talk all about Backstreet’s very first Christmas album, A Very Backstreet Christmas , coming out this October, and we also chatted about the 25th anniversary this month of BSB’s very first top 10 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 with “Quit Playing Games (With My Heart).” Next month also marks 25 years since the release of the boy band’s self-titled U.S. debut album, which began a still-unbroken string of 10 consecutive top 10 albums on the Billboard 200 .

Find some more choice quotes from the podcast interview below, and listen to the full episode above.

Why now for a Backstreet Christmas album?

“We had always talked about doing a full-length Christmas album, because we all love Christmas music, but just the way our tour cycles work and album cycles work — like by the time we finish a tour and then talk about the next album and then get in the studio and work on that and then promote that and then build and create a tour, rehearse that and then tour that and then, OK, we take some time off and then we start that whole thing over again. We just never had the time to get it done. So quarantine and COVID was a perfect opportunity to have some downtime and make some decisions and, you know, all of us go through our favorite Christmas songs of all time and kind of narrow down the songs that we wanted to cover and then write some originals, and we got it done finally.”

What has their first post-COVID tour been like?

“The energy has been incredible. It’s been incredible every night we’re onstage. I’m just — sometimes you get emotional, you know, thinking about it because there was a point in time that I didn’t know if this was gonna happen again. And so it just feels really good. The crowds, the energy, they’re just so happy to be together, you know? Sharing positive vibes and love and music and having a good time. That’s awesome, escaping for a little bit.”

What does Kevin remember about “Quit Playing Games” going top 10?

“I remember my mom was visiting me in Orlando, Florida, and we had gone shopping and to dinner and it came on the radio and we were in a parking lot and we were getting back in our car and I started the car. It was on the radio. We opened the doors and we got out and danced in a parking lot. That’s an amazing memory for me. And I’m getting a little emotional about it because my mom just passed in January. 22nd of January. So yeah, that’s a special moment that I’ll never forget.”

How Kevin feels about still going strong, 25 years later:

“When we finally broke and had success, then it was like, ‘OK, it’s time for our second album.’ We would be in interviews and everybody would ask, ‘Are you worried about the sophomore slump?’ … And we were just like, ‘You know what? We would just love to have a long career.’ And so that’s what we’ve tried to manifest, and we just keep grinding and keep trying to create music that we love and enjoy what we’re doing. And here we are — who would’ve thought.”

This Backstreet Boy Once Worked As a Disney World Tour Guide

"It was an inspiring, incredible place to come to work every day."

kevin richardson tours

Here's some Disney trivia that "Everybody" may not know.

Backstreet Boy member Kevin Richardson was once a tour guide at Disney World's Hollywood Studios when the park was known as MGM Studios in 1990.

"I would give a 25-minute guided tour of the Studio Backlot," Richardson revealed in a special celebrating Disney World's 50th anniversary on ABC's 20/20. "It was an inspiring, incredible place to come to work every day."

The Studio Backlot Tour attraction at MGM gave an insider look at just how movies were made. Guests would board a tram for a tour cruising by recognizeable props, production departments, and thrilling scene simulations — think: explosions and water effects — that put park-goers right in the middle of the action.

"Loved my time working at Walt Disney World," Richardson wrote in an Instagram caption of a video clip of his interview posted to social media.

In the years to follow, Richardson went on to join one of the most iconic boy bands of the 1990s, The Backstreet Boys, alongside his cousin Brian Littrel, Nick Carter, AJ McLean, and Howie Dorough.

The 20/20 special — "The Most Magical Story on Earth: 50 Years of Walt Disney World" — also featured interviews with other Disney-loving celebrities including Julie Andrews, John Stamos and Melissa Joan Hart. It is available to watch now on Hulu.

Richardson isn't the only celebrity who worked at Walt Disney World before becoming famous. Comedian and TV host Wayne Brady dressed as Tigger at the theme park as a teenager (and passed out from heatstroke in the costume), he shared with Playbill.com last year.

Walt Disney World kicked off its 50th-anniversary celebrations in October 2021 with new events and attractions popping up throughout the theme park until March 2023. The milestone is complete with new nighttime spectaculars and the opening of Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser hotel and Epcot's new Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind indoor coaster.

The Lion Whisperer

THE WILDLIFE SANCTUARY

The kevin richardson wildlife sanctuary’s mission is to provide a self-sustaining african carnivore sanctuary for the purposes of wild species preservation through education, awareness and funding, especially pertaining to the rapid decline of large carnivores in africa due to habitat loss, human-predator conflict, the illegal bush meat trade, unscrupulous hunting, disease and their illegal trade., wildlife sanctuary’s vision statement.

The Kevin Richardson Wildlife Sanctuary transforms the way humans think, interact and behave toward the keeping of large carnivores. The sanctuary’s ultimate goal is to minimize the number of large carnivores being kept in captivity and to highlight the direct link between the cub petting industry and the ‘canned’ hunting industry, by educating the unsuspecting public to the horrors associated with this unscrupulous practise. Ultimately we would like to see both practises outlawed. The sanctuary aims to maximize efforts towards keeping carnivores in their natural habitats and is currently home not only to  lion, but spotted hyena, striped hyena and black leopard. The lion population occupies less than 20% of its former range in Africa. Numbers are estimated between 15 000 and 30 000 depending on who is asked. More recently scientists have started to settle on a number of 20 000 however more research is needed in to the actual numbers. If allowed to carry on declining at the current rate we will have no lions left in the wildlife in as little as 20 years. Our vision is to raise awareness about the plight of lions and other carnivores in the wildlife and help prevent their habitat loss via human encroachment and conflict (revenge killing), unscrupulous hunting and illegal trade. The sanctuary’s efforts are buttressed by its many collaborative efforts with other like-minded international organizations that provide care, support, academic and scientific research and other such programs that support the shared values of the sanctuary. The sanctuary provides the animals in its care the ability to live out full lives, in an open and natural environment, by providing cutting edge enrichment programs and health care. Education of both adults and children are at the bedrock of how the sanctuary aims to accomplish its goals via documentaries, films, social media and tourism.

ABOUT WILDLIFE SANCTUARY’S

Just an hour north east of Johannesburg and half an hour from Pretoria lies Welgedacht Private Game Reserve. Nestled between the Bobbejaansberge and straddling the Boekenhoutspruit, the reserve forms part of the Dinokeng Game Reserve, and is the home of the ‘Kevin Richardson Wildlife Sanctuary’. The sanctuary relocated here and one of its aims is to ensure the animals live out their lives and open doors for new opportunities to continue the conservation efforts through the wildlife film making. The sanctuary is made up of 15 predator enclosures and a large central enrichment area to which the predators are rotated through every couple of weeks. This is to change their environments regularly which in turn stimulates their senses as they smell the scents of the previous groups of animals that were housed there. Boredom is thus prevented and the animals all get turns to roam the bigger area. The 1300 ha game reserve also makes for an incredible backdrop and filming location.

The facility predominantly houses adult predators as we do not breed lions at the sanctuary. Kevin is actively campaigning against the mass breeding of cubs for petting for the commercial tourism and volunteering industry that all too often end up being hunted in the morally repugnant practice of ‘canned’ lion hunting.’

The Kevin Richardson Wildlife Sanctuary is home to lions (as well as leopard and hyena) rescued from captive-breeding and cub-petting facilities. Enjoy a guided tour of the sanctuary while learning about the challenges facing lions today and the work we are doing here at the Kevin Richardson Foundation.

EXCLUSIVE : Saban Films has acquired worldwide rights to The 4:30 Movie , the latest film written and directed by Kevin Smith ( Clerks ). The film marks the second collaboration for Saban and Smith, on the heels of 2019’s Jay and Silent Bob Reboot , which scored one of the top-per theatre average openings of the year amongst titles like Parasite and Avengers: Endgame .

The 4:30 Movie also stars Ken Jeong ( The Hangover ), Sam Richardson ( Veep ), Genesis Rodriguez ( Tusk ), Justin Long ( Barbarian ), Jason Lee ( Almost Famous ), Rachel Dratch ( I Love My Dad ), Kate Micucci ( The Big Bang Theory ), Adam Pally ( Sonic the Hedgehog ), Harley Quinn Smith ( Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood ), and Method Man ( Power Book II: Ghost ).

Smith shot the film at his Smodcastle Cinemas in New Jersey — the same movie theater he haunted every weekend when he was a teenager, which he now co-owns. Liz Destro, Josh Bachove and Jordan Monsanto produced alongside EPs Bill Bromiley, Shanan Becker and Jonathan Saba. Smith is set to embark on a multi-city national tour with the movie this summer, with its rollout in theaters nationwide to follow.

“The day we bought Smodcastle Cinemas, I not only reclaimed an integral piece of my childhood, I also suddenly had access to a visually interesting and cost-free movie location!” Smith told Deadline of the genesis of his latest film. “So I started writing a personal paean to the past for us 70’s and 80’s kids – the pre-information generation who grew up without the Internet, when romance and relationships required much more than a swipe to get started, and the idea of asking out someone you had a crush on was as terrifying as the looming threat of nuclear war.”

Other recent acquisitions for Saban Films include Michael Keaton’s hitman thriller Knox Goes Away , thriller Butcher’s Crossing starring Nicolas Cage, action thriller Cult Killer starring Antonio Banderas and Alice Eve, Scandinavian thriller Good Boy , Darkness of Man starring Jean-Claude Van Damme, and Stephen Lang and Harvey Keitel’s action thriller Hellfire .

Saba negotiated the deal for The 4:30 Movie on behalf of Saban Films, with Destro repping the filmmakers.
