How to Set Up a Lamy Safari Fountain Pen for Drawing

lamy safari cartridge instructions

I’ve been drawing for years but it was only recently that I started using fountain pens for drawing.

While disposable technical pens are convenient, they can be expensive in the long run because you have to replace them frequently. Plus the felt tips get worn out with use which creates ragged lines.

Fountain pens have a number of advantages over using technical pens. The Lamy Safari fountain pen has a steel tip with a tiny ball welded onto the end. Not only will the tip last a long time, it has a nice smooth feel when you draw with it.

When you run out of ink, you can just pop in another ink cartridge and continue drawing.

It’s also possible to use a converter so that you can fill it up with your own ink. This option opens up many possibilities for trying out new ink colors, and different types of inks.

Fountain pens do require a little bit of care but it’s not difficult or time consuming. They’re much easier to clean than a Rapidograph technical pen for example.

Full disclosure: Gold Spot sent me these 3 Lamy Safari pens for free. But that has no impact upon my review. I only recommend products that I enjoy using.

How Do You Pronounce Lamy?

It’s pronounced Lah-me and it rhymes with Tommy. Here’s how Lamy is pronounced in a YouTube video from the official Lamy channel .

The above video should start playing at the 29 second mark which is when they pronounce it in German.

Which Fountain Pens Are Good for Drawing?

The Lamy Safari fountain pen is often recommended by artists for ink drawing. It’s a quality fountain pen that’s available at an affordable price. You can use disposable ink cartridges that are prefilled with ink. A converter is similar to a cartridge, but you can fill it with your own ink. I describe how to do this later in the post.

When I first looked into drawing with fountain pens the Lamy was recommend frequently by artists. Lamy Safari was also the pen that was recommend to me by Goldspot Pens .

Some fountain pens can cost hundreds of dollars so the Lamy Safari makes sense as a way to try it out without breaking your budget.

Fountain Pens vs Felt Tip Drawing Pens

There are some differences between fountain pens and the disposable technical pens.

For one, the ink that comes with the Lamy isn’t waterproof. This means that it will run when you apply watercolor over it. That’s something you can use for effect, but most artists are looking to avoid this.

lamy safari cartridge instructions

Another important point is you don’t want to leave a fountain pen sitting around unused for months. Eventually, you’ll have issues with the ink not flowing properly because the ink is drying in the nib.

It’s a good idea to clean the ink out of your fountain pens if you plan on leaving them unused for extended periods.

In other words, there’s a little bit more maintenance with using a fountain pen but it’s not a big deal.

I use to use the technical pens from Rapidograph and those were difficult to clean. In comparison, these Lamy fountain pens are much easier to clean and fill up with ink. There are fewer parts in a fountain pen and they’re not as delicate.

What’s the Difference Between a Cartridge and a Converter?

A cartridge is a sealed plastic cylinder that’s filled with ink. Once you use up the ink, you can dispose of the it and install a new one. The design of the converter allows you to fill it with your own ink and it’s reusable. It has a plunger that you can move up or down by twisting the end of it.

lamy safari cartridge instructions

Essentially, a converter works like a regular cartridge but it’s also reusable. This means you can buy a large bottle of your favorite fountain pen ink and fill the converter with it. Some inks aren’t available in cartridges, so this is a nice option.

Another benefit is that you can reuse the converter many times. A large bottle of ink should be less expensive than buying multiple prefilled cartridges.

You may find that you like the convenience of a cartridge. There’s nothing wrong with this. I use my yellow Lamy Safari for taking notes and for casual writing, so I use cartridges in it.

Regular fountain pen ink is usually water soluble so water will dissolve it. If you try to apply watercolor over the top of water soluble ink, it will ruin the drawing.

For drawing, I prefer an ink that isn’t water soluble. That’s where the converter comes into play. I like the Platinum Carbon ink. It’s water resistant and it’s safe to use in a fountain pen.

Platinum Carbon Ink Bottle 60ml - Black

Sometimes you can use that as an effect to get softer lines. But in the post, I assume you’re looking to be ink that doesn’t run as you brush over it with watercolor.

Filling a converter is an extra step, but once you try it, you’ll find that it’s rather simple to do.

The converter is also useful when it comes time to clean out your fountain pen. That’s because the piston will allow you to dip the nib into water and draw ink in and out of the converter and through the nib.

This will help to flush out the ink, which I demonstrate in the video.

Is It Necessary to Flush Out a Lamy Fountain Pen Before Use?

Lamy tests out their pens in the factory with blue Lamy ink, so you might want to flush it out if you’re changing colors or brands of ink. If you’re filling it with the same type of ink and color, then it’s probably not necessary unless you’re having issues with clogging.

Lamy tests each fountain pen to ensure that each pen is working properly. One small issue is that some traces of the blue ink are still in the pen.

The traces of blue ink aren’t an issue at all if you plan on using the blue Lamy ink that comes with the pen.

Some people just fill it with whatever ink or color they want without cleaning it first. It’s possible to get away with this, especially if you’re using blue or black ink.

However, I think it makes sense to flush it out first because it doesn’t take much time.

Can You Use Waterproof Ink in a Fountain Pen?

Yes, you can use waterproof ink in a fountain pen, but you want to use one that’s made for use with fountain pens. Otherwise it may clog, cause flow issues, or even damage the pen . You’ll also need to use a converter that fits your brand of fountain pen.

I explain how to use waterproof ink in a converter later in this post.

How to Install a Cartridge in a Lamy Safari Fountain Pen

Installing a cartridge in a Lamy Safari is easy. Basically, you just take the cap off, remove the cardboard ring, install the cartridge, and then screw the cap back on. Give the ink time to flow into the nib and then you can start writing or drawing with it.

Below are the more detailed step-by-step instructions.

lamy safari cartridge instructions

How to Fill a Converter With Drawing Ink

Filling a fountain pen converter with ink is pretty simple. You insert the converter into the pen, twist the end of it so the plunger is at the bottom. Then insert the nib of the pen into the bottle of ink and twist the plunger up to draw up the ink.

The more in-depth instructions are below. But first, you need to purchase a converter that works with your fountain pen.

Which Converter Works With a Lamy Safari Fountain Pen?

Some fountain pens can use a universal converter while other brands have a proprietary converter that only works with that brand. Lamy has a proprietary converter so make sure that you get the Z28 converter if you’re using the Lamy Safari.

If you’re using some other brand of fountain pen, you’ll want to do some research to make sure that you get a converter that fits it.

Below is the 5 pack of converters that I bought from Amazon. You can also find Z28 converters in single packages on Goldspot .

Step by Step Instructions for Filling a Converter With Ink

Below are the step by step photos and the instructions are in the captions. If something doesn’t make sense you can watch the YouTube video at the top of the post.

lamy safari cartridge instructions

There’s not too much that can go wrong. One thing that might happen is that you dip the pen too far into the ink and you get ink on the handle. That’s okay, you can clean it off with a rag or paper towel.

Another issue is that sometimes it doesn’t draw up ink, or only just a little bit of ink.

If that happens, just repeat the procedure. While the nib is in the ink bottle, twist the plunger so that it’s all the way down, and then twist it in the opposite direction to make the plunger go up.

Sometimes it doesn’t fill up because you don’t have the nib deep enough in the ink bottle.

You want to dip the nib of the pen into the bottle so that the ink covers up about 75% of the nib. It’s really simple once you do it a couple of times, you won’t have to think about it after you get the hang of it.

Twist the barrel of the pen back on once there’s enough ink in the converter. It helps to wipe off the excess ink from the metal nib with a paper towel. Fold the towel so that when it soaks up the ink it doesn’t get on your hands like it did in my video.

The rest of the process is the same as using a cartridge. Put the cap back on and allow the ink to flow into the nib.

Drawing With a Fountain for Watercolor Sketches

In the video, I demonstrate how I use ink and watercolor for sketching in my sketchbook. Below is a photo of the sketch of a boat harbor that I drew with the Lamy Safari.

lamy safari cartridge instructions

I normally sketch with an inexpensive mechanical pencil to layout the basic shapes. If the subject is simple I might start drawing with the pen. It’s up to you if you want to sketch with pencil first.

Once I’m happy with the drawing I will use a blowdryer to make sure the ink is dry. Thicker applications of ink may take longer to dry than thinner lines. Using a hairdryer to dry the ink ensures that there won’t be any surprises when you paint over it with watercolor.

It’s not fun to paint over a drawing and have the ink smear as you paint over it. Lighter colors like yellow are more affected by this than a darker color like Ultramarine Blue.

When I’m sketching outdoors I’ll just let the ink drawing dry naturally in the sun while I set up my watercolors. If you’re not sure it’s dry you can test out a section by brushing over a line with a small amount of water.

Which Paper Is Suitable for Ink and Watercolor?

Paper selection is an important consideration when you work with ink and watercolor. When I use a paper that I’ve never used before, I will take the time to test out the inks and watercolors that I plan on using on them to make sure that they work as I expect.

There are some papers that are more suitable for ink and watercolor than others. It might be the sizing on the paper, or perhaps the type of ink that you use, but some inks will lift and smear as you paint over them with watercolor, regardless of how long you let them dry for.

In the example painting, I’m using an Alpha series sketchbook from Stillman and Birn. Here’s the Alpha series on Amazon. This is the page for the Alpha series on Blick. It has a smooth surface and it’s suitable for thin washes of watercolor. The pages buckle a little bit, but I don’t mind it for sketching.

Final Thoughts

Using a fountain pen for drawing can be very satisfying. I like the fact that the nib doesn’t wear out like a felt tip pen does. Another disadvantage to felt tip pens is the lines get more ragged and lighter with use.

Being able to fill a converter with the type of ink that I prefer is another advantage that fountain pens have over other pens.

And I also feel like I’m not creating as much waste as I do when I buy disposable drawing pens.

Fountain pens seem to have the convenience of disposable pens and only require minimal maintenance. Give them a try and see what you think!

How to Fill a LAMY Fountain Pen

LAMY is an incredibly popular fountain pen brand, featuring many fountain pen models such as the safari  which are commonly purchased as a first fountain pen.

Filling a LAMY fountain pen with ink cartridges or bottled ink can take a little getting used to if you're not familiar with how fountain pens work. Here I'll show you how to do both of these with LAMY safari fountain pens.

The ink filling process for the LAMY safari is similar for all LAMY cartridge/converter fountain pens. LAMY uses proprietary ink cartridges and converters for their pens, so the specific accessories used here are just for LAMY pens.

LAMY safari fountain pen overview

When you first receive your LAMY safari, it comes with a proprietary LAMY blue ink cartridge, and a cardboard ring spacer (to prevent the included ink cartridge from puncturing in transit). You can dispose of the cardboard ring.

The LAMY safari has an ink window so you can see your remaining ink level.

The barrel connects to the grip section with a double-threaded twist. The flat part of the barrel will always line up with the nib, but the logo side may or may not be facing up. So if you want to line up the LAMY logo side with your fountain pen nib (or not!), just try again to screw it on again a half-turn from where you originally started.

Using LAMY ink cartridges

LAMY uses proprietary ink cartridges  in their fountain pens, so only their brand will fit.

Alternatively, you can place the ink cartridge into the grip section without pushing firmly, then screw the barrel all the way onto the grip section. The action of screwing it tightly will help push the ink cartridge into place and puncture it. It's made to fit exactly!

You'll want to wait maybe 30 seconds or so if your feed is dry, as it takes a bit for the ink to work its way down to the nib via capillary action.

Screw the barrel back on. Now you should be ready to write!

Using the LAMY converter with bottled ink

If you'd like to fill your LAMY fountain pen from bottled ink (or an ink sample), it's pretty straightforward. You'll need a cartridge/converter to do this, which is often sold separately.

The LAMY Z28 converter has little posts on it to securely connect to several models like the safari and AL-star, but alternatively you can also use the LAMY Z27 converter  in these pens as well.

You can check out our detailed article on the differences between the Z28 and the Z27 converters .

LAMY Z27 converter (black) and LAMY Z28 converter (red)

Steps to install and use a LAMY converter:

Close-up view of the LAMY Z28 converter seated into the grip section of a LAMY safari fountain pen

You may not get a full fill on the first try. Just do it again, and you'll get a bit more ink into the converter this time.

Wipe off any excess ink from the grip section before writing, unless you like having ink-stained fingers! A paper towel will do the trick.

Since you've inked up the pen through the feed, it's primed and ready to write.

Hopefully this was helpful to empower you with the knowledge needed to get your LAMY fountain pen writing.

One final note - LAMY fountain pens are tested for quality at the factory, so there may be a little blue ink residue remaining on the nib/feed. This is totally normal and doesn't mean your pen was used! This is why it's a good idea to clean any brand new fountain pen before using, particularly if you're using a different ink just to make sure you're getting a super fresh start and not worry about any potential weird ink mixing issues.

How to refill a LAMY fountain pen

For most LAMY fountain pens, there are two ways to top up its ink – refilling with a cartridge, or refilling with a converter and bottled ink.

Refilling with a cartridge

The first and easiest way is using LAMY’s own T10 Ink Cartridge , which is suitable for all LAMY fountain pens (excluding the LAMY 2000 – more on that below). LAMY T10 Ink Cartridges are the only compatible ink cartridges for LAMY fountain pens.

To replace the ink cartridge, simply twist the back section of the pen anti-clockwise (as shown in the diagram below) to separate it from the front section. If you’ve already got a cartridge installed, remove the empty cartridge. Place the new cartridge in the back section of the pen, making sure that the long narrow end goes in first. Screw the front and back sections together again until secure, and you’re ready to keep writing.

A diagram demonstrating how to separate the front and back sections of a LAMY fountain pen

Refilling with a converter and bottled ink

A fountain pen converter takes the place of an ink cartridge, allowing you to draw bottled ink into the pen. Cartridges are a quicker and simpler way to refill, but using bottled ink opens up an amazing range of colours to explore, and is well worth the extra effort.

To start, you’ll need a converter and some bottled ink [link].

The Z28 Converter suits safari, AL-star and Lx fountain pens, while the Z27 Converter  suits most others. The LAMY 2000 Fountain Pen is once again the exception, because it features a piston-filling system that does the job of a converter.

For bottled ink, simply choose the colour that suits your needs best. LAMY’s range of bottled inks are all made in-house by LAMY, ensuring a great writing experience when used with your fountain pen.

TIP: Give the (closed) ink jar a shake before filling your pen to ensure the best writing experience.

To insert the converter, twist the back section of the pen to remove as you would when replacing a cartridge (see instructions above). Insert the converter where the cartridge would typically sit, and twist the coloured handle on the converter so that the plunger inside is as far down as it can go.

With the converter in place, take the front section of the pen and lower it into the ink bottle until the nib is partially submerged in the ink. Hold the pen in place, and gently twist the converter handle the opposite direction – the plunger should draw back up towards the handle, bringing ink with it.

A diagram showing how to insert the nib of a LAMY fountain pen into an ink bottle for refilling

Please note that there will always be a small pocket of air in the converter – this is normal, and will not affect the function of your pen.

TIP: to reduce the amount of air caught in the converter, twist the handle to push the ink out and then repeat the filling process.

Filling a LAMY 2000 Fountain Pen

The LAMY 2000’s piston-fill mechanism works in a similar way to the converter filling method described above. Rather than separating the sections of the pen, though, simply twist the tail section of the pen to prepare it for filling. Submerge the nib in the ink, and twist the tail section clockwise to draw the ink into the pen. Repeat this process to expel as much air as possible from the pen.

The Lamy M55 Highlighter Refill Fits the Following Pens

The Lamy M16 ballpoint pen refill has a unique design, with the main barrel tapers into a long slender tube with the ballpoint tip at the end of this tube.

A plastic spring stop is fitted; compatible Lamy ballpoint pen refills are few and far between due to this unique design.

However, the Monteverde Soft Roll L13 ballpoint pen refill is available for Lamy ballpoint pens. It is a very smooth writing refill with a medium tip and measures 100mm in length and 5 mm in diameter.

Monteverde M13 Refill

The Monteverde L13 Soft Roll refill is available in 9 colors compared to Lamy’s four colors.

So if you are looking to try something different, they are worth checking out.

If you would like to know more about the different types of refills then Check out our Ultimate Pen Refill Guide .

The 10 Monteverde L13 refill colors are:

2. lamy rollerball pen refills.

Lamy makes two different rollerball refills, the M63 and the M66. These contain a liquid ink that is very smooth flowing and glides effortlessly across the paper.

The Lamy M63 rollerball pen refill fits all Lamy rollerballs with a cap, e.g., Lamy Safari rollerball pens. Conversely, the Lamy M66 refill fits their rollerball pens that do not have a cap, e.g., Lamy Dialog 2 rollerball pens.

You cannot interchange Lamy M63 and M66 refills, so you can only replace M63 refills with another M63 refill, and the same goes for the M66 refill; the M63 will not fit the pen.

In the following sections, we explain what tip sizes & colors are available for each rollerball pen refill and list the Lamy pens they fit.

We also show you what alternative refills from other brands will fit Lamy rollerball pens.

Lamy M63 Rollerball Pen Refill

The Lamy M63 rollerball pen refill is a metal barrelled refill tapering into a long plastic sleeve with the rollerball tip fitted to the end of this sleeve.

The Lamy M63 rollerball pen refill is available in two tip sizes which are medium and broad, and in the following colors:

  • Medium (M) Black, Blue (erasable), Red, Green

The Lamy M63 refill fits all Lamy rollerball pens equipped with a removable cap.

The Lamy M63 Rollerball Pen Refill Fits the Following Pens

  • Lamy 2000 Rollerball Pens

  • Lamy Aion Rollerball Pens
  • Lamy Al-Star Rollerball Pens

Lamy M66 Rollerball Pen Refill

The Lamy M66 refill is a metal refill that tapers into a plastic tube with the rollerball tip located at the end.

The Lamy M66 rollerball pen refill is available in two tip sizes which are medium and broad, and in the following colors:

The Lamy M66 refill is suitable for use in all Lamy rollerball pens that are do not have a removable cap.

The Lamy M66 Rollerball Pen Refill Fits the Following Pens

  • Lamy Dialog 2 Rollerball Pens
  • Lamy Imporium Rollerball Pens
  • Lamy Swift Rollerball Pens
  • Lamy Tipo Rollerball Pens

Lamy T11 Ink Roller Refill

The Lamy T11 ink roller is a metal refill with a 0.7mm tip and contains washable blue ink. It is a very smooth writing refill for Lamy Balloon Rollerball Pens.

The Lamy T11 cannot be used to refill any other pen.

Lamy currently make five different refills for their pens, and they have the following dimensions:

  • The Lamy M16 ballpoint pen refill is 106mm long and 6mm in diameter.
  • The Lamy M21 multifunction ballpoint pen refill is a standard D1 refill of 66 mm in length and 2.3 mm in diameter.

  • The Lamy M66 rollerball pen refill is 113mm long and 7mm in diameter.

4. Lamy Fountain Pen Refills

Lamy fountain pens are refilled via ink cartridges or from a bottle of ink using an ink converter.

The following sections will detail Lamy ink cartridges, Lamy compatible ink cartridges, & the different types of Lamy bottled inks and converters.

We will also show you which pens the different Lamy ink converters fit and how to refill a Lamy fountain pen.

Lamy T10 Ink Cartridges

Lamy T10 ink cartridges are a specific size and will only fit in a Lamy Fountain pen; they will not work in any fountain pen made by another manufacturer.

Check out our Ultimate Guide to Fountain Pen Ink Cartridges for more information on propriety and international standard-size cartridges.

They will refill all Lamy fountain pens except the Lamy 2000, which has a built-in piston fill converter.

Lamy T10 ink cartridges are available in the following seven standard colors:

Each year Lamy also brings out a limited edition color for their T10 ink cartridges.

Lamy ink cartridges are in packs of five, and each one contains approximately 1.15ml of ink.

In Comparison, there is 0.75ml of ink in short international standard size ink cartridges and 1.3ml of ink in long international size ink cartridges.

As we have already mentioned, Lamy ink cartridges are a specific size and can therefore only fit Lamy fountain pens.

Therefore there are not many compatible Lamy ink cartridges manufactured by other brands.

The good news is that Monteverde makes an ink cartridge that fits Lamy fountain pens.

Monteverde Compatible Lamy Ink Cartridges

If you are looking for an alternative to Lamy ink cartridges, they are worth checking out as they are available in 11 colors, including two fluorescent colors, which are:

  • Fluorescent Orange
  • Fluorescent Yellow

Lamy T51 Ink

Lamy T 51 ink is in a glass bottle that contains 30 mL of ink. The specially designed bottom of the bottle has a small ink reservoir sunk into its base that allows you to use more of the ink.

It is an excellent feature when using a traditional ink bottle. It is hard to draw the last drops of remaining ink from a flat bottle bottom into your fountain pen.

Lamy T51 ink is available in the following three colors:

Lamy T52 Ink

Lamy T52 ink is in a glass bottle that contains 50 ml of ink. The bottom of the bottle has a  small ink reservoir sunk into its base that allows you to use more of the ink.

Lamy T52 ink is available in the following six colors:

Lamy T53

Lamy T53 premium quality crystal ink is in a 30ml bottle. The ink colors are inspired by gemstones, although you would never know from the official description on the Lamy website.

The following image is a screenshot of how Lamy describes their ink, any wiser? No, me neither it’s 70 words of fluff that don’t say anything.

Lamy T53 Crystal ink is available in the following 10 colors

An ink converter is needed to refill Lamy fountain pens with ink from a bottle. It is a refillable ink tank filled with bottled ink made by any brand.

Lamy makes two ink converters, the Lamy Z27 and the Lamy Z28.

Each converter only fits certain fountain pens, which we will cover in the following sections.

Lamy Z27 Converter

The Lamy Z27 Ink converter was formerly known as a Lamy Z26 ink converter until Lamy rebranded it several years ago.

It is a twist-action converter turning its screw draws the ink from the bottle into the reservoir.

It is possible to use this ink convertor in nearly all Lamy fountain pens but to be safe, I would stick to the following list of pens that Lamy states.

The Lamy Z27 Ink Converter fits the Following Fountain Pens

  • Lamy Accent Fountain Pens
  • Lamy Aion Fountain Pens
  • Lamy CP1 Fountain Pens
  • Lamy Dialog Fountain Pens
  • Lamy Imporium Fountain Pens
  • Lamy Logo Fountain Pens
  • Lamy Pur Fountain Pens
  • Lamy Scala Fountain Pens
  • Lamy Studio Fountain Pens

Lamy Z28 Converter

The Lamy Z28 Ink converter was formerly known as a Lamy Z24 ink converter until Lamy rebranded it several years ago.

It is a twist-action converter turning its screw draws the ink from the bottle into the reservoir. Two molded locators on the side prevent the Lamy Z28 from fitting in other fountain pens.

The Lamy Z28 Ink Converter fits the Following Fountain Pens

  • Lamy ABC Fountain Pens
  • Lamy Al-Star Fountain Pens
  • Lamy Joy Fountain Pens
  • Lamy Nexx M Fountain Pens
  • Lamy Safari Fountain Pens
  • Lamy Vista Fountain Pens

Lamy fountain pen nibs have a simple design that allows most of them to be easily changed by pulling them off the ink feed and sliding the new nib back over the feed.

Our top tip is to sick a piece of Sellotape across the nib and use this to slide the nib off its ink feed.

Note that Lamy can only change some nibs on the more expensive fountain pens in the factory. If in doubt, check with a Lamy dealer first.

These are the Lamy nibs available Z50, Z52, Z53, Z55, Z56, Z57, and Lamy 2000 nibs.

Lamy Z50 is the entry-level nibs used in cheaper fountain pens such as the safari. In the next section, we will detail the different ranges of nibs and sizes.

Lamy Z50 Nibs

The Lamy Z50 nib is Lamy’s entry-level nib and has stood the test of time as a decent workhorse. It may not have the writing finesse of a gold-plated nib.

However, this is probably the first nib they encounter for thousands of young people worldwide as Lamy safari fountain pens are fitted with them, which are probably the first fountain pen they use as a student.

Lamy Z50 nibs are made from stainless steel and are available with either polished chrome or black finish and easily replaced if you want to try something different from the standard medium nib.

Lamy Z50 Nib Sizes

  • A – Beginner’s Nib
  • LH – Left Handed Nib with a Medium Tip
  • EF – Extra Fine – 0.36mm
  • F – Fine – 0.46mm
  • M – Medium – 0.56mm
  • B – Broad 0.75mm
  • 1.1mm Calligraphy Nib
  • 1.5mm Calligraphy Nib
  • 1.9mm Calligraphy Nib

The Lamy Z50 Fits the Following Lamy Fountain Pens:

  • Lamy Joy Fountain Pens (Calligraphy Nib 1.1, 1.5, 1.9)
  • Lamy Linea Fountain Pens

Lamy Z52 Nib

Lamy Z52 nibs have a black PVD coating and fit Lamy LX fountain pens and the Lamy LX Studio fountain pens.

They will also fit any fountain pen that takes a Z50 nib if you want to upgrade to this cooler and slightly more expensive nib.

Lamy Z53 Nib

The Lamy Z53 nib is fitted to Lamy Aion fountain pens and is far more responsive to pressure than the standard Lamy Z50 nibs allowing more creativity when writing.

The steel Z53 nib has a slightly different profile to the standard Z50, making it more responsive.

If you want to swap out a Lamy Z50 nib for a Z53 on your favorite Safari fountain pen or any other pen with a Z50, then it is a straightforward process, and the Z53 fits perfectly.

Lamy Z53 Nib Sizes

  • EF – Extra Fine
  • B – Broad

Lamy Z55 Nib

The Lamy Z55 14K bi-color gold nibs have platinum plating, a premium nib that feels more responsive, and it is easier to write with than a steel Lamy Z50 nib.

They are fitted to fountain pens such as the Lamy Accent CP1 and Studio fountain pens but also can replace the nib of any fountain pen with a Lamy Z50 fitted to it.

Lamy Z55 Nib Sizes

  • *OM – Oblique Medium
  • *OB – Oblique Broad

*Oblique is a slant on the nib that can help straighten writing by someone who holds their pen at a slight angle and is also used to produce creative writing.

Lamy Z56 Nib

Lamy Z56 nibs are a 14K gold nib with a partial platinum coating and fitted to Lamy Imporium pens.

Lamy Z56 nibs can be used to replace Z50 nibs already fitted to a fountain pen.; however, you could buy four Lamy Safaris for the price of this nib.

Lamy Z56 Nib Sizes

  • OM – Oblique Medium
  • OB – Oblique Broad

Lamy Z57 Nib

Lamy Imporium pens have a Lamy Z57 nib.; the only difference between a Lamy Z57 and a Lamy Z56 nib is that the Z57 is a 14K gold nib with a partial black PVD coating.

The nibs can also upgrade any fountain pen that takes a Lamy Z50 nib.

Lamy Z57 Nib Sizes

Lamy 2000 Nib

The Lamy 2000 fountain pen is factory fitted with a unique hooded nib that Lamy can only replace.

Lamy recommends using Lamy M40 0.7mm refills; however, 0.7mm replacement leads from other brands can be used.

You can buy refills directly from the Lamy website but obviously, you will be paying the full retail price.

If you are looking to save money and buy cheap Lamy refills then Amazon is probably as good as anywhere.

There are plenty of other online stores that will sell them but they struggle to compete with Amazon on prices and postal costs.

I am sure that this has been asked before. I am considering Lamy safari in broad nib. This will be my first Lamy. One reviewer mentioned that it is a proprietary cartridge. Another said it will accept international. Help?

lamy safari cartridge instructions

Lamy proprietary or one of their own converters.

I saw a video from one reviewer. He purchased a lamy safari. The dealer did not have the lamy convertor in stock and sent him a different convertor. Although the reviewer did not mention the type of convertor, I suspect it was an international convertor. I have several international converters and a large quantity of cartridges.I was wondering if they would fit the Lamy?

Collectors Item

The reviewer was an idiot if he let himself get fobbed with a non-proprietary converter.

With enough brutal force all converters and cartridges will fit... Using other than Lamy converters or cartridges may damage the pen. Keep that in mind.

Hi, Modern LAMY fountain pens use LAMY cartridges and LAMY converters. No other.

that would be the ideal combo, yes

But these days there also exist Lamy-compatible cartridges from some 3rd party companies, they usually have Lamy at one end and standard international on the other.

Where I am, in an average british town, I can buy LAMY pens and cartridges in at least four different shops, at very reasonable prices, I don't have any problem in finding the 'correct' refills, and it bothers me to try to use the wrong brand ones.

I refill used cartridges with a syringe anyway, so new ones are a rare thing to me.

I have had my fair share of leaks with various pens over the years with all brands of pens, so I don't want to 'risk' any problems for the want of spending a few pounds on the real thing.

If there are compatible spares that are made to fit, I would try them, that's fair enough.

that would be the ideal combo, yes   But these days there also exist Lamy-compatible cartridges from some 3rd party companies, they usually have Lamy at one end and standard international on the other.
Yes, but it's made to be compatible . That's not the point here.

In kuwait the brand name LAMY is like a random asteroid floating in space that a scientist just gave a name to it and has just .....never even dared to know its name. Nobody knows it.

But PARKER and SHEAFFER, boy you ask anyone and they will tell you "Oh yeah that brand i know its a good brand, they have nice pens"

What im trying to say is that the only brands that are easily available at any stationary shop in kuwait are Parker and sheafer(ball and roller ball pens mostly for this brand).

I think by recently reading pentorium's post they were from the brand Kombi.

Anyway what the question asked is that wether the lamy uses standard or proprietary cartridge converter. It uses proprietary so YOU CAN ONLY USE LAMY WITH LAMY AND NO OTHER.

its the best way to make a profit.

Proprietary LAMY cartridges will fit. Others may or may not. There are risks. Forcing a tight cartridge onto the nipple might damage the pen. A loose fit would leak. LAMY cartridges are more expensive, but cartridges can be refilled a dozen times, with bottle ink, using a syringe. A LAMY Z26 converter costs $7 - $8 .

Auf freiem Grund mit freiem Volke stehn. Zum Augenblicke dürft ich sagen: Verweile doch, du bist so schön !

Chrissy

Cartridges and converters are cheap. Why not use the proprietary ones? Why would anyone try to ram in a different type and risk breaking the pen?

well if you read the above post you will find the ANSWER.

Maybe a photo of the two types of cartridge would help to prove the point?

Aesthetics aside Parker converters work fine in Lamy pens

Enjoy your pens
