Visit Lipa City page for all information on Lipa.

Many accounts of the iconic history and amusing development of Lipa City had been detailed throughout the years. Yet, not too many people knew about these a hundred percent.

Everytime I read about other people’s work, I try to imagine the things that ran in his/her mind as he/she strive to weave the facts, with an ample injection of emotional value. When I read this contributed article from Renz Marion Katigbak, I realized there are still a lot to learn about Lipa City.

If you’re good in memorizing dates and names in your History subject back when you were still in school, then maybe you would dig this article. Plus, if you want to be reminded of other notable sites in Lipa City, this could be a refresher for you, our dear readers.

Lipa City, a Religious Haven and a Heritage Destination By: Renz Marion Katigbak

Despite Lipa’s state of progress and commercialization, the city still preserves its religious and cultural traditions.

A heavenly rapture

Lipa City is the renowned “Little Rome of the Philippines” and the seat of the Archdiocese. What’s more, it is a pilgrim’s paradise – home to a plentiful number of religious congregations and an abundance of beautiful Catholic chapels and churches. Notable churches are:

Metropolitan Cathedral of San Sebastian

This turn of the century consecrated edifice began its construction through the concerted efforts of Augustinians who administered the Parish of San Sebastian: in 1779, Fray Ignacio Pallares, later on continued by Fray Manuel Galiana in 1787, and its spacious transept completed in 1865 by Fray Manuel Diez Gonzalez.

To protect the big and attractive church from earthquakes, it was made of hewn stone and tiled roof . Before, it had plain and simple altar ornaments without the extravagant carvings characteristic of the past. During the 19th century, intense competition among the towns of Batangas, Bauan, Lipa, Taal and Tanauan, for the selection of the seat of the new diocese in the Southern Tagalog Region, motivated the people to build extraordinary big churches. However on April 10, 1910, when the historic foundation of the new diocese took place, its first bishop, Most Rev. Joseph Petrelli, D.D , chose LIPA as the SEE because of its cool climate. For this reason, the San Sebastian church automatically became the Cathedral of the Diocese of LIPA .

The church suffered massive damages during the Second World War. Msgr. Alejandro Olalia had it repaired – the interior painting retouched and two-sided aisles were added. In the year 2000, to prevent the Cathedral’s complete deterioration, immense refurbishments and adornment were lead by then parish priest, Msgr. Alfredo Madlangbayan . The church also features an attracting grand baroque designed pipe organ which is the only one in Batangas Province and one of only 59 units in the Philippines.

Carmel of Our Lady Mary Mediatrix of All Grace

Yet, during the 1950s, the local Catholic Church declared the alleged apparition as a hoax and ordered the Carmelite nuns to destroy everything that was connected with it. In the 1990s, after 40 years of public silence, the late Archbishop Mariano Gaviola re-opened the case and ordered that the statue of Mary Mediatrix of All Grace be again exposed for public veneration.

In 1991, rose petals from the sky began to fall again in the grounds of the Carmelite convent and it was said that the statue of Our Lady came to life. With all these, on September 12, 2005 , present Archbishop Ramon Arguelles restored the devotion to Our Lady and declared the date as a yearly National Pilgrimage .

Thousands of faithful all over the country are participating in this momentous event. September 12 is a special holiday privilege given only to Lipa. Last November 12, 2009, Archbishop Arguelles totally lifted the ban and formed a new commission to reinvestigate the apparition and the miracles in Lipa.

Other well-known churches are the following: the Monastery of Saint Benedict , the Archdiocesan Shrine of San Vicente Ferrer , and the Redemptorist Chapel of Divino Amor (home to Our Lady of Perpetual Help). A couple of different religious congregations are also living and doing their missionary works in Lipa: the Missionary Catechists of the Sacred Heart (founded by Bishop Alfredo Versoza and Madre Laura Mendoza, a holy Lipeña), the Missionary Catechists of St. Therese (founded by the servant of God Alfredo Aranda Obviar, a Lipeño priest, first bishop of Lucena, he is now being petitioned for sainthood), the Brothers of the Christian Schools (well known as the LaSalle brothers), the Oblates of St. Joseph (OSJ), the Clarissas Capuchinas Sacramentarias (Capuchin Sisters), the Capuchin Friars , the Missionary Sisters of Catechism , Benedictine Sisters , Carmelite nuns , and the Redemptorist Fathers .

An amiable and a tragic history

Lipa is a place very proud of its history of prosperity and magnificence. The city’s beautiful past is an enchantingly captivating saga one might ever hear.

It was this splendored affluence which elated the Queen Maria Cristina of Spain (acting regent for the young King Alfonso XIII) to pass a royal decree converting the tiny municipality into “Villa de Lipa” in October 21, 1887. The city was given the privilege using a “coat of arms”. However, these fabulous days abruptly ended when the Lipa coffee industry collapsed due to the “bagombong” pest.

The complete demise of the lucrative town came during the Second World War. Lipa crumbled down and was considered as one of the most devastated cities, in the Southeast, that were affected by the rage of war. The splendid homes of landowners, furnished with the best from Europe were reduced to ashes. Still, faint traces of the extravagance can be gazed in the few old stone houses that survived. Famous among them are:

The Luz-Katigbak Ancestral House (Casa de Segunda)

A National Historical Institute declared Heritage House, Casa de Segunda was named after Segunda Solis Catigbac , the grand matriarch of the prominent and prolific Katigbak clan of Lipa. She had been linked to Dr. Jose Rizal as his young lady of interest. The ancestral house is one of the surviving stone mansions of the glorious Lipa. Built in the 1880’s, the dramatic arrangements of space, use of masonry and sense of grandeur and solidity are practical response to environment and charming record of history.

Partly damaged by the Second World War in 1942, the house was remodeled in 1956 by Segunda Katigbak’s daughter, Paz Luz Dimayuga. The grandchildren of Paz, who were born and raised here, restored the house in 1996 to its original form and grandeur, its fountain, fishponds, and orchards. In that same year also, it was opened to the public and today it is a repository, a hint to the fine and rich lifestyle of the Lipeños during its bygone era.

The Luz-Bautista Ancestral Home

Built by the patriarch of the Luz Family, Jose Luz , the stone mansion was completed in 1881 after ten years of construction. It is of Babylonian architecture with furnishings from Europe, curtains from Paris, mirrors from Austria, pieces of furniture from Vienna, chandeliers, plates from Germany and fine porcelain from China.

This is one of the very few “Bahay na Bato” (stone house) spared from devastation when Lipa was razed to the ground by World War II. Though it is not open to the public, it still stands as a reminder, a testimony to Lipa’s grandeur and one of city’s cultural treasures.

Other structures, like the Museo de Lipa and Museo ng Katipunan of Bulakalan , possess old relics and memorabilia of history.

A diverse haven

Aside from being a religious and heritage destination, Lipa is blessed with breathtaking places to see. It is home to different lush eco-tourism delights such as: the Farm at San Benito , Mt. Malarayat , a good place for a hiking adventure, Bluroze Farms Parks and Wildlife , and the Anihan Botanical Garden . Relaxation and leisure can be obtained with the resorts, spas, parks, and malls that sprung in the city.

Educational institutions and commercial areas are almost everywhere. Indeed, it is a good place to live, to invest, to work, to study, and to raise a family. Triumphs and turmoil might have landed Lipa but the continuous struggle and resiliency had formed it to be the city that we recognize today.

I believe Lipa is for GOD alone! A place to raise Godly men and women and not religious people of today. Leaders to carry out their role in making Lipa City the Tiger of Asia! 🙂 Combining the collective effort of men and acknowledgment of who really God is (who Owns everything. With these, we can say that Lipa City is not just a mere renowned Little Rome of the Philippines but A BIG Zion of the Philippines. The city of the Living God. 🙂

Lipa is the second largest city in Batangas , in terms of land area and the economic and religious center of the province. It lies approximately in the middle of the province, surrounded by Malvar to the north, San Pablo and Alaminos (in Laguna), and San Antonio (in Quezon) to the east, Padre Garcia, San Jose and Ibaan to the south, and Cuenca, Mataasnakahoy, and Taal Lake to the west.

Understand [ edit ]

The articles covers Metro Lipa , a minor and unofficial metropolitan area, including nearby municipalities, while independent administratively, are closely dependent to the city. Locals generally speak of Lipa to include the metropolitan area composed of these municipalities.

  • Lipa city proper
  • Balete , to the northwest
  • Mataasnakahoy , to the west

Lipa is a medium-size city, with a population of over 320,000, according to the 2015 Census. The city is undergoing fast urbanization; it has started to see its first high-rise buildings, and overtaken Batangas City in economic development.

Lipa is known for coffee production, introduced by the Spaniards. Kapeng barako production once served an important source of income to locals, but it died out in favor of other agricultural products and commercial developments.

The town of Mataasnakahoy is practically a suburb of Lipa, just behind the Fernando Airbase, and is closer to the city in its growth. Balete does not have much growth as Mataasnakahoy, but can still be considered a suburb, connected by a 11-kilometer (6.8 mi) national road through the eastern slope of Taal Lake. Their local population rely on fishing and agriculture, and usually travel to Lipa to shop, study, and work.

The city is also known as the " Rome of the Philippines", being the country's answer to Vatican City with its historic cathedral, religious sites, and seminaries. Lipa is the center of Catholicism not only in Batangas (as the seat and namesake of a Roman Catholic archdiocese encompassing the whole province), but also the Philippines.

History [ edit ]

The original town center of Lipa lied in what is now Mataasnakahoy, in the slopes of Taal Lake. The old town center ( Lumang Lipa ) was destroyed by the 1755 eruption of Taal Volcano , and only a bit of it remains today. The current downtown became the new site of the town center after 1755. Under royal decree, the new Lipa was elevated into a city in 1887.

Lipa sustained heavy damage during World War II, and was almost destroyed by Japanese dive bombers. Lipa also caught international attention in 1948 after the supposed Mary Mediatrix apparition, which has not been confirmed true by the Vatican.

Climate [ edit ]

The climate is tropical, heavily influenced by the monsoon. Daily temperatures can be as high as 29.6 °C (85.3 °F) or low as 21.6 °C (70.9 °F), and there is less variation in temperature. Precipitation is influenced by the monsoon, and the wet season is from May to December. The city has a very short dry season. Average annual rainfall is comparable to Manila.

Orientation [ edit ]

Lipa is split into 72 barangays , including the 13 barangays in the Poblacion. Some barangays of interest are:

  • Dagatan - The Malarayat Golf Course and County Club and Fiesta World Mall lies in this barangay. International schools are also concentrated around this area
  • Marawoy - Here, you may find the City Hall and SM City Lipa.
  • Mataas Na Lupa - This area has a growing nightlife and a gentrifying environment. Here you can find Robinsons Place Lipa, the Big Ben shopping center, and the city's top educational institution, De La Salle Lipa . You can also go into classy restaurants and cafés on the rise in the area.

Local orientation divide Lipa City proper into two parts, the Downtown and the Uptown . The "Downtown" included the Poblacion area, where Lipa Cathedral and the public market are found. The area along Ayala Highway (Jose P. Laurel Highway, or Route 4) is called "Uptown", a fastly gentrifying section of the city, composed of barangays Mataas na Lupa, Balintawak, and Marawoy. With developments of large malls, commercial space, and development of mid-range restaurants, bars and cafés (e.g. Starbucks, The Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf, Army Navy, Shakey's), the Uptown also houses Lipa's growing nightlife.

Get in [ edit ]

By bus [ edit ].

  • 13.95452 121.16174 1 Lipa City Grand Terminal ( At SM City Lipa ). A large bus station opened in the early 2010s, and also serves some jeepneys and UV Express. Buses arrive at the front, and jeepneys and UV Express at the back. The terminal is built over one of SM City Lipa's parking areas, which is moved above to provide space for the structure. While large, it is rather functional, but there are also a few food kiosks and an small Alfamart store. ( updated Jul 2019 )

By car [ edit ]

Lipa is well accessible from the tolled Southern Tagalog Arterial Road (STAR Tollway). Those avoiding tolls may take the Jose P. Laurel Highway.

From San Pablo , Laguna , the main route is the Lipa-Alaminos Road , which mostly takes you through coconut plantations, mountains and jungle. From Quezon Province , take the Batangas-Quezon Road (Route 435), then follow Lipa-Padre Garcia Road (Route 431), which becomes P. Torres Street as it approaches downtown. There is a bypass road being constructed from Route 435 in Padre Garcia to Lipa-Alaminos Road in Dagatan, providing a bypass to Route 431 and Lipa's downtown, but is under construction as of 2020.

By jeepney/UV Express [ edit ]

Lipa is the terminus of regional jeepney routes, coming from Calamba , Rosario , San Juan , and Batangas City .

In addition to the Lipa City Grand Terminal, jeepneys or UV Express (passenger minivans) use these terminals

  • Robinsons Place Lipa Passenger Terminal ( Part of Robinsons Place Lipa ). Serves as terminus for the Batangas City-Lipa (BN-02), and Calamba-Lipa via Tanauan routes, as well as UV Express coming from Calamba, San Pablo, and Ibaan. ( updated Jul 2020 )
  • Lipa-Rosario jeepney terminal . Serves the jeepney routes coming from Rosario and San Juan ( updated Jul 2020 )

Get around [ edit ]

Map

Lipa's old downtown, the Poblacion , is characterized by a rough grid of streets, characteristic of Spanish-era town centers. Many streets are narrow, more suited for pedestrian traffic than cars. With the exception of large shopping malls, the downtown hosts most local businesses and the public market, a staple of Philippine city/town centers. Car travel is inadvisable in the Poblacion, as parking is hard to find, and pedestrians practically cross everywhere. Most parts of the city can be reached by jeepney and tricycle.

The towns of Mataasnakahoy and Balete can be reached by jeepney. There is frequent service to Mataasnakahoy from the Robinsons mall, but services to Balete, from the terminal at Marawoy, are rather infrequent.

Stay safe [ edit ]

Lipa is rather safe compared to Manila, but it has a share of common urban problems. The downtown can be pretty unsafe: jaywalking is everywhere, traffic is slow, unlicensed tricycle drivers may scam you, and beggars are enough to irritate you. Illegal drugs are another problem, but you will rather find them in residential areas.

All About Lipa City, Batangas

All About Lipa City, Batangas

Lipa is a first-class component city in the province of Batangas in the Philippines. It is one of the 3 cities in the province, together with Tanauan and Batangas City, and is located 78 kilometers south of Manila. It is named after a species of a tree in the Urticaceae family, called lipa (Dendrocnide meyeniana), which is known for its twigs’ stinging trichomes.

Brief History

The primal composition of Lipa in the old days is the ancient settlement in the southeastern region of Bombon Lake, particularly the dispersed colonial families that were founded by Datus Dumangsil and Balkasusa in Taal between the 10 th and 13 th centuries AD. Out of the tribes of the Dumangsil and Balkasusa clans was born Lipa’s ancestry, as their later descendants spread out towards the Bicol Peninsula and Laguna de Bay. Excavated remains from the ancient settlements in Taal, Butong, Balayan and the Calatagan Bay Area attest to the fact of the tribe’s presence at least in the latter part of the 12 th century down to the coming of Martin de Goiti and Miguel Lopez de Legaspi in Batangas in 1570.

Like other places in the Philippines, Lipa enjoys a climate that is generally warm, except during rainy and typhoon days. The average yearly temperature is 28 degrees Celsius, with the highest recorded temperature 35.7 degrees Celsius and the lowest, 16.4 degrees Celsius. Rainfall in the city is sporadic the whole year, where it is dry from January to May and wet from June to December.

Attractions and Landmarks

Lipa is known for its religious and heritage sites, even called the “Little Rome of the Philippines”. It is a paradise for pilgrims and holiday makers alike, being home to beautiful attractions and landmarks. Here are the most popular ones:

Metropolitan Cathedral of San Sebastian

This turn-of-the-century consecrated edifice started its construction through the efforts of Augustinians who administered the Parish of San Sebastian. Starting in 1779 with Fray Ignacio Pallares, it was later on continued by Fray Manuel Galiana in 1787 and completed in 1865 by Fray Manuel Diez Gonzalez.

Katigbak Ancestral House

Also known as Casa de Segunda, this is a National Historical Institute-declared heritage house was named after Segunda Solis Catigbac, who is the grand matriarch of the prominent and prolific Katigbak clan. This building is one of the surviving stone mansions of the glorious Lipa. It is built with dramatic use of masonry, arrangements of space and sense of solidity and grandeur.

Luz-Bautista Ancestral Home

This stone mansion was built by the patriarch of the Luz Family, Jose Luz, and was completed in 1881 after 10 years of construction. With curtains from Paris, furnishings from Europe, furniture from Vienna, chandeliers and plates from Germany and porcelain pieces from China, this is structure of fine architecture. This ancestral home is one of the very few “bahay na bato” (stone houses) that were spared from devastation caused by World War II.

Aside from its religious and heritage spots, there are more breathtaking places to see in Lipa, such as the Farm at San Benito, Bluroze Farms Parks and Wildlife, Mt. Malarayat and the Anihan Botanical Garden.

How to Get There

One can reach Batangas from various points of Luzon, so it depends on what part of it you are heading to. For Lipa, you can turn right upon reaching the Lipa City toll exit.

LIPA CATHEDRAL: The Metropolitan Cathedral of San Sebastian

By continuing to read this article, you agree to double check with the authorities or other concerned entities for the latest updates.

I had to push my lower jaw up with my hand. I didn’t realize that the whole time I was looking up, admiring the huge, intricately painted circular dome crowning the Lipa Cathedral, that my mouth had been wide open in awe. The Poor Traveler was one of the only few people inside. It was cold and dim inside the Cathedral, like in most big churches, and the magnificent dome seemed to be the most well-lit part of the building. In fact, the dome itself illuminated the place, as most of the light inside came through its small windows, adding marvel to its already grand design.

But as one cliche goes, this dome is just the tip of the iceberg.

WHAT'S COVERED IN THIS GUIDE?

History of the Lipa Cathedral

The Metropolitan Cathedral of San Sebastian in Lipa, more commonly known as San Sebastian Cathedral or more simply Lipa Cathedral , has a long history of construction, destruction, and restoration.

lipa tourist destination

According to the Lipa City Tourism Council , the history of the Cathedral can be traced back to as far back as April 30, 1605, when it was administered by the Augustinians under the title “Convent of San Sebastian in Comintang.” The original building was made from only light materials.

But the construction of the Cathedral that we see today started in 1779. Since then, it has undergone a series of renovations and several elements had been added until it was finally completed from 1865 to 1894, under the administration of Fray Benito Varas. In the 19th century, still according to the Lipa City Tourism Council , the towns of Lipa, Taal, Batangas, Tanauan, and Bauan competed to be chosen as the seat of the Southern Tagalog Region’s new diocese. This inspired the people of these towns to build enormous and extravagant churches. But in April 10, 1910, Lipa was chosen as the See (official seat of the bishop) and the new diocese was founded. They say that Lipa’s cool climate had a big effect on the decision by Most. Rev. Joseph Petrelli, the diocese’s first bishop. Since then, the Cathedral has also been known as the Cathedral of the Diocese of Lipa. Today, Lipa is now an archdiocese, covering many of the churches and parishes in neighboring municipalities and cities.

Lipa City was one of the most heavily destructed cities in the region after World War II. Along with many of Lipa’s ancestral houses that were destroyed, the Cathedral also suffered from the atrocities of the war. Msgr. Alejandro Olalia, however, led the restoration of this very special church in the 1950s. Many elements had been added and restored through the years.

But its history isn’t the only fascinating thing about the Cathedral.

Architecture and Design

The Lipa Cathedral was constructed in the Romanesque tradition. It has big circular dome, giant walls and columns, balconies, and arches. Standing proudly in front of the church is a bell tower, which, like the dome, is decorated with moldings.

The Main Hall is surrounded by a series of arches. The carefully arranged pews form a sea of wooden linear pattern that lies underneath the chandeliers, illuminating the church. The aisle dividing the pews lead to the altar, bathing in the spotlight provided by the clerestory of the dome above. The ceiling — including the pendentives and intrados — is painted with images of saints.

In one corner of the Main Hall is a tableau depicting the Paschal mystery. In the opposite corner is a winding stairway that connects the ground floor to the balcony, where the choir stays.

The main altar

Paseo de San Sebastian

There are also a number of remarkable elements outside. Exit through the doors to the right and you’ll find a garden-like passageway called Paseo de San Sebastian . The Paseo separates the Cathedral from the administration offices. At the far end stands a figure of the Virgin Mary, surrounded by ornamental plants. While we were there we could not help but stay under the shade of the surrounding buildings and admire the fantastic architecture of the church, especially its dome that looked magnificent against the rolling clouds in the background.

lipa tourist destination

Even its main entrance door is worthy of a mention. Sixteen carved images depicting the History of Salvation up to the Great Jubilee of 2000 greet devotees and tourists. The door is said to have been installed much more recently.

The San Sebastian Cathedral truly is one of the most important churches in Batangas and a trip to Lipa wouldn’t be complete without a visit to this church. It does not just provide a spiritual center and shelter to the Lipeños, it also offers a glimpse of the history of the oldest city in Batangas.

Fortune Island and Fantasy Land Castle in Batangas

The province of Batangas is located in the CALABARZON region of the Philippines. A huge section of the province sits on the southwestern coast of Luzon island.

Batangas is one of the most popular holiday destinations for domestic travelers mainly because of its proximity to Manila , the Philippines' capital. If you want a quick weekend getaway or vacation, Batangas is perfect as it is only about 108 km away, around a 2 - 2.5 hours drive from Manila.

To get here, you can rent a car, book Batangas tours , or take one of the buses that regularly connect to the province. Batangas’ accessibility from Manila is not the only reason to visit it. The province is such a great holiday destination for families and big groups because it offers a wide range of experiences and attractions.

Batangas tourist spots include historical sites, distinct architecture, and outdoor attractions. The province is home to several gorgeous beaches near Manila , ranging from black to powdery white. Milea Bee Farm is located on Kurba Road, Lipa Batangas, about 21 km away from Batangas City. The farm attracts many visitors due to its authenticity and serene environment and is one of the top farm destinations in the Philippines . The farm does not feel like a tourist trap as it advocates bee propagation, beekeeping education, and agricultural sustainability.    The main tourist activity in Milea is a guided farm tour called “Beesita sa Bukid Tour.” This tour starts with a short educational talk on bees and their habitat. Afterward, you can walk around the property and learn about different flowers, plants, and fruits growing here. The tour also includes seeing the bees up close and honey tasting.

Milea Bee Farm also offers vegetable picking to its guests. Aside from beekeeping, the farm also grows a variety of vegetables like tomatoes, cucumber, celery, and string beans.

Visitors attend mass near the Monte Maria Shrine in Batangas

Monte Maria is not just a shrine but an international pilgrimage and conference center built in honor of the Virgin Mary. Formally known as Montemaria International Pilgrimage and Conference Center, the complex spans 8 hectares and is situated 20 kilometers outside of Batangas City.

Monte Maria is one of the top Batangas tourist spots because of its uniqueness. It is meant to be both a religious and tourism site. Although devotees and pilgrims are attracted to it, Monte Maria caters to regular tourists as well.

The main landmark of the center is the Virgin Mary Shrine, officially named Mother of All Asia-Tower of Peace. At over 98 meters, this tower is considered one of the tallest Virgin Mary statues in the world. It sits on the top of a plateau, about 148 meters above sea level. The tower overlooks Verde Island Passage, Batangas Bay, and parts of Oriental Mindoro.

Monte Maria houses two chapels, a restaurant, a souvenir shop, and impressive architectural designs. It is also a retreat and retirement center that has rooms and spaces for workshops and conferences. Monte Maria is about 20 kilometers away from Batangas City.

Facade of Calaruega Church in Batangas

Caleruega Church is one of the most famous churches in Batangas. This property is perched on the highest hill of Nasugbu Town. Caleruega is named after a Spanish municipality.

Caleruega Church has beautiful architecture and a tranquil natural environment that makes it ideal for religious activities and spiritual retreats. In fact, it has become a well-known wedding venue.

Caleruega is not just a church but a retreat center surrounded by lush scenery. Its main building is called the Transfiguration Chapel. This chapel has a nice colonial design and a peaceful ambiance. This is the most photographed part of the property and where most couples choose to wed.

  • Book a Caleruega Church tour and explore other Tagaytay and Batangas attractions

Aside from the main building, you can visit the other interesting sections of the complex during your visit. Some of these are the Fountain Compass, the Tent Chapel of Transfiguration, St. Dominic’s Point, Kampo Terraces and Amphitheater, and the Dominicum’s grand stairway. Caleruega’s outdoor area also features a koi pond, a Japanese garden, plant nursery, a worm farm, a hanging bridge, and various walkways.

You can visit Caleruega Church on a day trip and spend a couple of hours exploring the property. However, since it’s also a retreat center, Caleruega is equipped with cottages, large halls, and a campsite to accommodate guests who wish to stay overnight.

One of the buildings in Fantasy World, Batangas

Fantasy World was meant to be the Philippine version of Disneyland. It’s supposed to be the largest and grandest theme park in the country. However, this ambitious project has remained unfinished. Fantasy World has never opened as a theme park. According to local stories and rumors, the Japanese owner had financial problems and, therefore, stopped the construction years ago.

Despite being a failed project, Fantasy World is still a favorite Batangas tourist spot and a frequent filming location. Its large fairytale castle, medieval-themed structures, and sad story have managed to attract many tourists.

  • Book a Fantasy World tour to explore this Disneyland-like attraction

You can still access Fantasy World if you pay the minimal entrance fee. But it’s not a functional theme park, so there are no rides or shows. With its intact medieval architecture and lush surroundings, Fantasy World is still very scenic.

While here, you can walk around, enter the fairytale-like buildings and take photos. One popular spot in the abandoned park is the hanging bridge connected to two treehouses. You can climb to the top of the treehouses and enjoy the views of Batangas, including the Taal Volcano.

Fantasy World is located along Diokno Highway in Lemery, Batangas. A local homeowners association is managing and operating the property.

Facade of the Taal Basilica in Batangas

Taal Basilica’s official name is Basilica of St. Martin de Tours. It stands on top of a hill at the center of Taal Town. This basilica is huge; it is 96 meters high and 45 meters wide. It is often referred to as the largest Catholic Church in Asia.

Taal Basilica was reconstructed several times in the 19th century. Its Baroque appearance today is attributed to architect Luciano Oliver, who redesigned the church in 1856.

The church’s main draws are its silver tabernacle and facade, which is comparable to the one at St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. Taal Basilica’s 26 classical columns at the entrance are indeed an impressive sight!

Taal Basilica is a popular wedding site and a favorite destination of devotees during the Catholic Lenten season.

When you enter, the basilica’s altar size will immediately impress you. This altar is 10 meters wide, 24 meters high, and lined with Doric columns with a Jesus Christ statue at the center.

Taal Basilica is the main building in Taal Park, which has other notable landmarks like the Rizal College and the Escuela Pia: Taal Heritage Center.

Sombrero Island is one of the most visited islands in Batangas. From afar, the island looks like a dark hat jutting from the sea. Hence, it's named "sombrero," which means 'hat' in Spanish. The island is one of the best spots to snorkel in Batangas. It also has a beach composed of white sand and crushed shells.

Sombrero Island is located off the coast of Anilao. Visitors usually take a boat tour to reach the island from Anilao’s shoreline. The boat ride from the mainland takes about 15 to 20 minutes. However, travel time may vary depending on sea conditions.

  • Book a  Batangas island-hopping tour to Sombrero Island, Portales Beach, & Sepoc Beach

You need to pay a fee to enter Sombrero Island. Aside from snorkeling, you can swim and have a picnic on the beach. You can also walk around the island. It is small enough that it will only take less than an hour to explore it.

Sombrero Island is uninhabited and has no hotels, shops, or tourist infrastructure around. Overnight stays are not allowed. You must bring your own food and drinks but make sure to clean up after and take your trash with you.

Woman enjoys the view from Mt. Maculot in Batangas

Mt. Maculot is one of the most well-known hiking spots in the Philippines . This mountain stands at 930 meters above sea level. The hike to the summit is rated 4/9 in difficulty level. Even though some parts of the mountain trail are slippery, steep, and muddy, a reasonably physically fit person can do the trek.

Trekking to the top of Mt. Maculot usually takes about 5 to 6 hours. Some hikers start the climb before dawn to maximize sunrise views.

Mt. Maculot is situated in Barangay Cuenca, Batangas. Before trekking, you will need to pay a fee and register with the local authorities. You also need to hire a trained guide to ensure a safe journey.

People hike to Mt. Maculot’s summit to enjoy some of the best views of Taal Volcano and Taal Lake. The Mt. Maculot trail features 14 resting camps or stations. These stations symbolize Jesus Christ’s crucifixion journey on Mount Calvary.

The climb has three main destinations, which are “the Grotto,” “the Rockies,” and “The Summit.” “The Grotto” is the site for the Lady of Lourdes shrine and a popular vantage point for Mt. Maculot’s summit. “The Summit” offers views of the Taal Volcano Island, the Labangan Bay, and Mount Makiling, a dormant volcano. “The Rockies” is the third vantage point that has views of the picturesque rocky cliffs along the southernmost part of Lake Taal.

View of the ridges of Mt. Batulao, Batangas

Situated in Nasugbu, Batangas, Mt. Batulao is one of the most accessible mountains near Manila and is another top hiking destination in the Philippines. Mountain climbing enthusiasts come to Mt. Batulao because of its many peaks, boulder formation, grass ridges, and scenic views.

Mt. Batulao is one of the easiest Batangas mountains to trek, making it a perfect location for training climbs.

The journey to the summit is composed of open trails and rolling slopes. The mountain summit is about 811 meters above sea level. Mt. Batulao has 12 peaks that offer panoramas of Taal Lake, Cavite, Nasugbu coastline, Maragondon mountains, Tagaytay highlands, Balayan Bay and Mt. Maculot.

The mountain offers two main trails, called “Old Trail” and “New Trail''. The Old Trail is located in the mountain's eastern section and has 10 campsites/stations. The New Trail is on the west side of the mountain, and it features only one large campsite.

The Evercrest Golf Course in Nasugbu is the jumpoff point to Mt. Batulao. From the golf course's entrance, you can walk or use the tricycle (local three-wheeler) to reach the start of the trails. Local guides, some of which are kids, would usually offer their services at the entrance.

The Greek structures on Fortune Island, Batangas

Fortune Island lies just an hour off the coast of Nasugbu, Batangas. It features a white sandy beach, a cliff diving point, and clear turquoise water.

The island’s history is quite interesting as it used to be the site of a luxurious resort. Unfortunately, the resort closed down because of the huge maintenance cost and the absence of freshwater sources. The Grecian Acropolis, which sits on top of a limestone cliff, is a reminder of Fortune Island's luxury resort days.

  • Book a Fortune Island tour in Batangas

The jumping point to Fortune Island is the Fortune Island Resort on the mainland. You must pay an entrance fee at the resort to enter the island. You will also need to ride a boat for 1 to 1.5 hours to reach the island.

Aside from swimming and relaxing on the beach, some activities you can do while on Fortune island include trekking the island, visiting the lighthouse, and snorkeling. Remember to bring your own equipment to snorkel.

You can visit Fortune Island on a day trip, or you can stay overnight. There are cottages on the island available for rental for the day and overnight stays. The resort also allows camping but charges tent rental or tent placing fees for those who will bring a tent.

3. Taal Volcano

View of Taal Volcane in Taal Lake, Batangas

Taal Volcano is the most recognizable landmark of Batangas. Standing at only 3 meters above sea level, it is one of the smallest volcanoes in the world. Aside from its size, Taal stands out because of its unique physical features.

Inside the Taal Volcano’s caldera lies the beautiful Taal Lake, which surrounds more than 40 craters and cones. In the middle of this lake sits Volcano Island. At the center of Volcano Island is another lake referred to as the Main Crater Lake.

However, you can still enjoy Taal Volcano panoramas from vantage points in the lakeshore towns of Talisay and San Nicolas or when you book Tagaytay hotels . Lipa Cathedral: A Historical and Religious Landmark in Lipa, Batangas

Table of Contents

The Lipa Cathedral, also known as the Metropolitan Cathedral of San Sebastian, is a Neo-Renaissance cathedral located in Lipa, Batangas, Philippines. It serves as the seat of the Archdiocese of Lipa and is one of the most significant landmarks in the city. The cathedral was chosen as the seat of the then Diocese of Lipa in 1910 and was elevated to an archdiocese in 1972.

The Cathedral is an iconic structure that boasts a stunning facade and impressive architecture. It was constructed in the Romanesque tradition, featuring a big circular dome, giant walls and columns, balconies, and arches. Standing proudly in front of the church is a bell tower, which, like the dome, is decorated with moldings. The cathedral’s interior is just as impressive, with intricate details and beautiful stained glass windows that add to its grandeur.

Visiting the Lipa Cathedral is a must for anyone traveling to Batangas. It is not only a religious center but also a cultural and historical landmark that showcases the rich heritage of the city.

History of Lipa Cathedral

The history of the cathedral can be traced back to as far as April 30, 1605, when it was administered by the Augustinians under the title “Convent of San Sebastian in Comintang.” The original building was made from only light materials.

In 1910, the cathedral was chosen as the seat of the then-Diocese of Lipa. During this time, the cathedral underwent significant renovations, including adding a new altar and installing stained glass windows.

The cathedral was heavily damaged during World War II and later reconstructed in 1947. The reconstruction included adding another story to the original five-story octagonal bell tower.

The cathedral has been visited by several popes throughout its history. Pope Pius X visited the cathedral in 1903, while Pope John Paul II visited the cathedral in 1981 and 1995.

Today, the Lipa Cathedral stands as a testament to the rich history of Batangas and the Philippines.

Architectural Design of Lipa Cathedral

Neo-renaissance design.

Lipa Cathedral was built during the administration of Fray Benito Baras, from 1865 to 1894. The cathedral’s architectural style is characterized by the use of classical forms, symmetry, and proportion. The neo-Renaissance style is evident in the cathedral’s Latin cross layout, which features a series of arches that form a linear pattern around the Main Hall.

Dome and Bell Tower

The Lipa Cathedral features a large dome that dominates the structure’s skyline. The dome is decorated with moldings, a prominent feature of the cathedral’s neo-Renaissance design. The dome is supported by giant walls and columns, which add to the cathedral’s grandeur. Besides the main facade of the cathedral stands an octagonal bell tower, which is another remarkable feature of the cathedral’s architectural design.

Altar and Organ

The altar and organ of Lipa Cathedral are also noteworthy features of the cathedral’s design. The altar is made of marble and is intricately carved with religious motifs. On the other hand, the organ is a magnificent instrument that adds to the solemnity of the cathedral’s religious services. The organ’s pipes are arranged in a symmetrical pattern, which adds to the cathedral’s overall sense of harmony and proportion.

The Diocese of Lipa

The Diocese of Lipa is a Latin Church ecclesiastical territory located in Batangas, Philippines. It was established on April 10, 1910, by Pope Pius X and was elevated to an archdiocese on November 20, 1972, by Pope Paul VI. The diocese comprises the civil province of Batangas and has a population of around 3 million people.

The diocese is led by the Archbishop of Lipa, who serves as the spiritual head of the Catholic Church in the area. The current Archbishop is Gilbert Garcera, who was appointed on May 14, 2018. He succeeded Ramon Arguelles, who served as Archbishop for 15 years.

Aside from Batangas, the Diocese of Lipa also covers the provinces of Quezon, Aurora, Laguna, Marinduque, Occidental Mindoro, Oriental Mindoro, and the Camarines area. The archdiocese has a total of 69 parishes, including the Metropolitan Cathedral of San Sebastian, commonly known as the Lipa Cathedral.

The Diocese of Lipa has a rich history, with many notable events taking place within its boundaries. In 1948, the diocese was rocked by a controversy known as the “Lipa Incident.” A nun named Teresita Castillo claimed to have received visions of the Virgin Mary, which were later declared false by the Vatican. The incident caused a rift within the Catholic Church in the Philippines and led to the excommunication of several priests and nuns.

Despite this controversy, the Diocese of Lipa remains an important center of Catholicism in the Philippines. The Lipa Cathedral, in particular, is a significant landmark and serves as a testament to the enduring faith of the people of Batangas.

San Sebastian and the Cathedral

The Metropolitan Cathedral is dedicated to Saint Sebastian, a Christian martyr who is venerated as the patron saint of athletes and soldiers.

The history of the cathedral dates back to the early 17th century when the Parish of San Sebastian de Lipa was administered by the Augustinians under the name “Convento de San Sebastián en Comintang.” The first church buildings of Lipa were made of light materials and were eventually replaced by more durable structures. The current cathedral was chosen as the seat of the then Diocese of the Lipa in 1910.

The cathedral is a significant religious landmark in the Philippines, attracting visitors from all over the world. Its architecture is a fusion of Renaissance and Baroque styles, characterized by its grand arches, intricate carvings, and ornate details. The cathedral’s interior is equally impressive, featuring high ceilings, stained glass windows, and religious artworks that depict scenes from the Paschal Mystery.

San Sebastian Cathedral in Lipa has undergone several renovations and restorations over the years. The most recent restoration was completed in 2015, which involved repairing and repainting the cathedral’s façade. Today, the cathedral remains a symbol of faith and heritage, serving as a sanctuary for the faithful and a testament to the rich history and culture of the Philippines.

Lipa Cathedral and the Community

The Lipa Cathedral serves as the Archdiocese of Lipa’s seat, covering many churches and parishes in neighboring municipalities and cities.

The church has a long and rich history in the community. It was chosen as the seat of the then Diocese of Lipa in 1910, and since then, it has become an important landmark in the city. The Lipa Cathedral was heavily destroyed during World War II but was later restored and renovated to its original grandeur.

The Lipa Cathedral plays a significant role in the Roman Catholic faith of the community. It is a place of worship, where the faithful can come together to pray and attend mass. The church also hosts various religious events and celebrations throughout the year, such as the Feast of San Sebastian, which is celebrated every January 20.

The Lipa Cathedral is not just a religious institution but also a cultural and historical landmark in the community. The cathedral’s impressive architecture and stunning facade make it a popular tourist destination in Batangas. Visitors can admire the church’s intricate design and learn about its rich history.

In addition to its religious and cultural significance, the Lipa Cathedral also plays an important role in the community’s social and economic development. The church provides various outreach programs and services to help those in need, including feeding programs, medical missions, and educational assistance.

Dua Lipa Brings a Spring 2024 Runway Trend Into the Real World

By Hannah Jackson

New York NY EXCLUSIVE Dua Lipa with her father Dukagjin Lipa spotted arriving at JFK airport in NYC. She is in town to...

Dua Lipa is by no means afraid of fashion. From her Radical Optimism era marked by bondage-like leather and hardware, to her rave bae vacation fits , the singer has proven time and time again that she’s not afraid to lean on the unrelatable side of her outfits. But with her most recent look, she modeled what is perhaps the most accessible trend from the spring 2024 runways.

Dua and her father, Dukagjin Lipa, touched down at New York’s JFK Airport this morning. At a glance, the “Illusion” singer wore a totally incognito airport fit: a green hoodie and navy-and-maroon sweats, both from the Palace Gap collaboration, and a pair of black Pumas. An expert flyer, she also rocked a black quilted jacket from Y/Project with navy contrast details, which she’s previously worn on travel days. But chief among Dua’s already-relatable airport fit was her purse.

Miu Miu spring 2024

Miu Miu spring 2024

Bottega Veneta spring 2024

Bottega Veneta spring 2024

While not many of us can call an Hermès Birkin our personal item, Dua’s was brimming with plane essentials—from her water bottle to the slate gray claw clip affixed to the handle. Bags runneth over were a popular styling choice on the spring 2024 runways, from Miu Miu to Bottega Veneta .

Although we can only sneak a peak at what’s emerging from the Grammy winning singer’s favorite purse, we can only imagine what she has inside. Our guess? A sheet mask for on-the-move skincare, high-quality headphones to listen to her unreleased tunes, and whatever is next on deck for her Service95 book club. Plus, a plane snack or two (though we have a feeling she isn’t exactly buying $7 Chex Mix from a Hudson News).

So, Dua Lipa, if you’re reading this, we humbly request a bag tour.
