Ciao, dovrei prenotare un volo per New York e ho trovato ottime tariffe sul sito LOL TRAVEL, qualcuno l'ha mai usato, è affidabile?

Non ho mai sentito qs agenzia online e mi sono permessa di fare una simulazione per un volo a caso (MPX-JFK da effettuarsi a febbraio).

In tutta sincerità non ho visto un gran prezzo, anzi. E' il medesimo che si trova sul sito della compagnia aerea, maggiorato delle spese di gestione....

Per cui, come suggeriamo sempre qui sul forum, ti consiglierei di prenotare il volo direttamente sul sito della compagnia aerea, anche per evitare di avere più di un interlocutore (che si palleggia eventuali responsabilità nel caso dovessero sorgere delle problematiche).

ma come dice giustamente gattina non lavorano gratis! Prenotare direttamente sul sito delle compagnie aeree è sempre più sicuro ed economico anziché usare intermediari

Ciao Riccardo, giusto per capire, quando dici ottime tariffe per New York ci dici quali sono e con quale altro fornitore hai confrontato? Così gli esperti capiscono se ci sono certe date in cui ci sono effettivamente tariffe migliori di quelle delle compagnie aeree e ti possono consigliare ancora meglio

Spesso le agenzie di viaggi online fanno prezzi nettamente più bassi delle compagnie. Ovviamente c'è il rovescio della madaglia. Se vuoi contattarli spendi parecchio in telefonate. I biglietti emessi sono validi anche se costano meno della compagnia. A voi la scelta.

Ho comprato un biglietto e non ho ricevuto alcuna assistenza quando, il giorno dopo l’acquisto ( tipo 8 ore dopo!) l’ho richiesta. Nessuna risposta alle mail per ore, su facebook lo stesso. Avrei volute cancellare il biglietto, prima dell'emissione, ma loro, mi hanno mandato egualmente il ticket nonostante la mia richiesta.

Su un costo totale di 266 euro il rimborso previsto e' di soli 87 euro piu' da pagare ulteriori 30 euro a loro per la cancellazione. Costi elevate del biglietto , comparati con altre agenzie, ma per questo mea culpa, avrei dovuto cercare meglio, perfino per fare il check in e’ richiesto un addebito di ulteriori 15 euro. Senza Parole!

Ciao a tutti! Mi inserisco nel discorso perché sto guardando dei voli per Zanzibar a luglio: Prenotando direttamente con Oman Air il prezzo risulta di 610 euro, con TUI fly o LOL travel invece poco più di 400 euro...come è possibile? Ovviamente la possibilità di spendere meno mi attira molto ma dall'altra non mi sento così sicuro. Intanto perché con Tui fly danno bagaglio 23 kg invece che 30kg che di norma ha Oman air (perché dovrebbe essere diverso??) e poi perché viaggio con attrezzatura sportiva e non vorrei storie o problemi in caso di assistenza. Consigli?

Non ti fidare. Ho prenotato un volo. Torino lamezia a 150 euro. Ho chiesto il rimborso per motivi di salute.

Mi hanno detto ke mi potevano rimborsare solo 28 euro, ma per farlo loro ne vogliono 30. E quindi meglio ke non lo chieda. Il volo in questione era con alitalia, se l avrei prenotato dal loro sito me l avrebbero rimborsato.

una curiosità: sento spesso dire, da quasi tutti, che prenotare sul sito della compagnia è più economico ed è più sicuro: sulla sicurezza non vi è dubbio ma sul fatto che sia più economico, non sono particolarmente d'accordo. Mi potete dire in base a quali parametri affermate questo?

Non sono un viaggiatore di primo pelo (sono circa 25 anni che vago per il mondo) ma raramente, ad esclusione di voli Ryanair e simili, mi è capitato di trovare un prezzo minore sul sito della compagnia.

Premetto che, prima di effettuare una qualsiasi prenotazione, tengo sotto controllo il prezzo e faccio comparazioni con tutti i siti possibili.

Quali sono le opinioni di chi ha utilizzato lol.travel per prenotare un volo, un hotel, oppure una vacanza?

Come sempre siamo andati a cercare online recensioni verificate di persone che hanno utilizzato Lol.Travel, e, fra i vari siti, ci siamo affidati a Trustpilot , dove, a marzo 2023 la pagina di lol.travel ha ben 1492 recensioni con una valutazione media di 4.2 stelle su 5:

Le recensioni positive di lol.travel parlano soprattutto della semplicità d’uso del sito, la velocità nell’effettuare le prenotazioni el e proposte di ricerca degli hotel differenti da quelle proposte da altri siti.

Vincenzo racconta: ho effettuato la prenotazione dopo aver effettuato una ricerca su Trivago, tutto è stato rapido ed efficiente con possibilità di ottenere anche un cashback.

• Difficoltà in alcuni casi nel contattare l’assistenza clienti (l’assistenza risponde spesso spiegando che a volte le tempistiche di risposta possono allungarsi a causa delle numerose richieste)
• Il fatto che in fase di acquisto i prezzi possono cambiare più volte, in questo caso l’assistenza ha risposto che la prenotazioen non è stata confermata dalla compagnia aerea e a volte i prezzi possono cambiare in base a vari fattori

Personalmente non ho mai prenotato un volo o un hotel con lol.travel, solitamente utilizzo dei motori di ricerca voli come Skyscanner o Google Flights e per le prenotazioni di hotel o B&B Booking ed Airbnb!

TRUFFATORI!!! Ho acquistato con LOL TRAVEL a metà Aprile 2023 i voli per tutta la famiglia Milano-Chișinău-Milano che doveva essere effettuato tramite Air Moldova. La compagnia aerea il 2 di Maggio ha cancellato i voli ed indovinate: al giorno d’oggi il rimborso NON È STATO EFFETTUATO! Lol Travel a tutte le richieste risponde che dipende tutto da Air Moldova, mentre da indagine personale contattando il Ministero di Aviazione Civile di Moldova risulta (la risposta ufficiale) che e l’agenzia in questione che deve difendere i diritti dei propri clienti ed assicurarsi di far avere il rimborso. Dal totale del costo dei biglietti €761 loro però subito hanno precisato di trattenere €111 che è il costo della assicurazione e gestione della pratica – tutto ciò per cosa? Per un supporto assente? Praticamente dopo 40 giorni dalla cancellazione il rimborso non si e visto – senza parole. State attenti e non rivolgetevi a questa azienda – SONO TRUFFATORI!

Scam on the rate used for booking ?

I just booked an hotel for 2 weeks with zenhotels. At the end of the booking process, I received a voucher with the terms and conditions with this hotel. It mentioned that the rate is applicable only for honeymooners, otherwise I will have to pay the full rate. During the reservation process, no information has been displayed on this condition. What a brill 50th Birthday I had!

What a brill 50th Birthday I had! I went for my 50th birthday, great surprise in hotel with a bottle of champagne and a birthday card. Lovely big room, very clean, great food amazing view (sea). Also, very good Restaurants couple minutes walking. Quick check in, good and helpful receptionist. Fab time! Definitely we go back again! I booked a trip to Cairo (two transits)…

I booked a trip to Cairo (two transits) with this website. First flight, Air Canada, was delayed by 4 hours and the next flight would be missed. They tried to scam me by asking to pay 300 USD to give alternative flights. Air Canada did it all for me and gave a meal voucher on top.

Avoid this site at all cost

We use kayak which is the main host for travel bargains hunting. We were directed to loltravel and bought 4 tickets to osaka. To our horror, the reference PNR is not able to check in. We have to make a trip to the airport to do a manual check in a day before the travel. The pnone number provided only get a computer response and always busy with no one available to answer any query thus wasted our overseas call. Wrote an email and worse, replied was in some funny language that we don’t understand. Our opinion is avoid this site at all costs

Avoid at all cost or it will cost you!! Was due to travel to Turkey on Sunday three weeks ago, flight was cancelled on Saturday due to adverse weather conditions. Contacted lol travel to change my tickets. They told me my new tickets had been emailed to me(still waiting for them to this day) and charged me 55€ for that "favour". Tried to contact them by phone and email, couldn't get through to anyone. Eventually heard back from them on Monday afternoon when my rebooked flight was on Monday morning. They're now saying I'm only eligible for a 25% refund, and they'd charge me another 55€ handling fee. Those people are crooks, clowns, not there to help their customers. Disgusting!!!!

We had booked a room in playa del…

We had booked a room in playa del carmen for march 1 2023 and when we arrived at the hotel, they said we had no bookings with them even though we had prepaid LOL and we had the reservation number and the hotel voucher but they had no information on us and would not honour the voucher so we had to leave and find a room 2:30 am when most hotels were closed. **Update** After speaking with an agent, we did receive a full refund for our accommodations. Due to this we have now given 3 stars.***

Total disaster

Very lousy service! After booking tickets in value of 2080 Euro I was expecting confirmation email. Never received, later it turned out it went into spam, but the content was - I shall pay by 300 Euro more! Without knowing I have the mail I tried to contact via their web page twice, via chat at least 3 times and tried to call on phone - no way to get a comprehensive answer. Just the same "you have in your email". After 9 days now I found out the tickets are not booked. Never again... such a stress. Good, at least the money was returned.

I booked a ticket from Singapore to…

I booked a ticket from Singapore to Korea with LOL, it was suspicious as the website did not ask for a code pin when I made payment. Still decided to go thru with it (BIG MISTAKE)!! After that, I received an email in Italian ( is English not an universal language) trying to deduct more money!! Called my bank immediately to block all transactions! HUGE DISAPPOINTMENT!

Worst customer service ever.

Worst customer service ever. I purchased tickets to copenhagen and by mistake I mistyped one letter in my son's name . I promptly send an email and they refuse to help me to modify one letter . They keep stating that I need to contact KLM agency to correct the letter . therefore KLM agency said that we need to contact lol travel as they are the agents . Will not use your service again watch out do not trust them Of course was done with a charge of 55 euro disaster

Error for the hotel location in website

The hotel selected was indicated in the website as near to Sestriere (we were going there); in real this hotel Italia is in Valle D’Aosta far more than two hours by car. Thanks for your reply below, but when I have tried to have support from your side, the answer was that they accept room’s reservation erasing but the whole amount paid is the penalty. It means that due your error I am going to lose all money spent (only 30 minutes before).

Truffato con aumento improvviso del prezzo

Avevo prenotato un volo da Roma a Parigi su "Lol Travel" a un prezzo ragionevole, ma al momento di pagare, il prezzo è aumentato di 100€ senza spiegazioni, nonostante tutti i dati personali inseriti. Sono rimasto deluso da questa tattica ingannevole e non lo consiglierei ad altri.

Ho prenotato una camera d'albergo in Grecia tramite Lol Travel. Al momento tutto sembrava andare per il meglio, il prezzo era quello confermato. Attenderò di vedere come si svolgerà la vacanza prima di dare un giudizio completo. Personalmente, eviterei di acquistare biglietti aerei da altri siti in futuro.

Ho acquistato con LOL TRAVEL a metà Aprile 2023 i voli per tutta la famiglia Milano-Chișinău-Milano che doveva essere effettuato tramite Air Moldova. La compagnia aerea il 2 di Maggio ha cancellato i voli ed indovinate: al giorno d’oggi il rimborso NON È STATO EFFETTUATO! Lol Travel a tutte le richieste risponde che dipende tutto da Air Moldova, mentre da indagine personale contattando il Ministero di Aviazione Civile di Moldova risulta (la risposta ufficiale) che e l’agenzia in questione che deve difendere i diritti dei propri clienti ed assicurarsi di far avere il rimborso. Dal totale del costo dei biglietti €761 loro però subito hanno precisato di trattenere €111 che è il costo della assicurazione e gestione della pratica - tutto ciò per cosa? Per un supporto assente? Praticamente dopo 70 giorni dalla cancellazione il rimborso non si e visto - senza parole. State attenti e non rivolgetevi a questa azienda - SONO TRUFFATORI!

Pessimo servizio...al momento di procedere al pagamento con carta di credito e' comparsa inspiegabilmente la scritta "Il biglietto aereo è aumentato!" Cosa non vera perché ho poi acquistato il biglietto su un altro sito al prezzo originariamente pubblicizzato .

Il numero di Rimini non ha operatori disponibili da quattro ore, quello di Milano non è abilitato da fisso né da Iliad, il servizio mai segnala sempre "Errore imprevisto". La compagnia aerea ha cancellato il volo e la lol ha accettato, contro le mie indicazioni, un anticipo alle 6.25. Non riesco a contattare lol, come ho detto, e non mi hanno contattato. Il comportamento di questa egenzia è molto poco etico perché se tu Haun problema è non riesci a partire perdi entrambi i voli. Comunque anche se cerchi di recuperarli e inutile perché per loro l'importante è incassare poi sono proplemi tuoi. La sconsiglio anche per la poca cortesia

Dopo aver affrontato il viaggio di andata con destinazione San Jose in Costarica, con scalo a Zurigo ho dovuto posticipare di un giorno il rientro previsto dopo ben 90 giorni, con conseguenti disagi e spese, in quanto " l'agenzia " in questione non si era minimamente preoccupata di avvisare della necessità di un permesso speciale indispensabile per passare dal Canada. Infatti il volo di rientro prevedeva un'iter differente con scalo a Toronto. La risposta dell " agenzia" è stata che è responsabilità del viaggiatore informarsi in merito ad eventuali permessi. Che ... servono a fare codesti inutili e truffaldini servizi di presunte "agenzie" ??? Inutili, ignoranti e poco professionali. AirCanada ha pensato a tutto al posto loro. LOL TRAVEL È PESSIMA ED ANDREBBE CHIUSA E MULTATA ! FANNO SCHIFO !

Piccolo problema ma risolto!

C’è stato un piccolo problema con le prenotazioni all’arrivo (eravamo 4 persone e avevamo prenotato 2 quadruple, nell’offerta risultavano meno care di due doppie; al mostro arrivo risultava 1 quadrupla per noi 4, ma all hotel sono stati carinissimi, ci hanno fatto avere 2 camere ci han fatto pagare una caparra regolarmente restituita il giorno seguente, ed è stato tutto risolto con molta gentilezza e professionalità

FATE ATTENZIONE!! Servizio non veritiero. Ho comprato due biglietti dove veniva chiaramente scritto che includevano bagaglio in stiva e al momento ricezione biglietto ho appreso non esserci alcun bagaglio in stiva!! E il servizio clienti dice che non sanno come è avvenuta la prenotazione ( via skyscanner normalmente) e quindi se volevo mi cancellavano il biglietto entro le 23.30 dello stesso giorno ( sono ora le 23.30 ) al costo di 55€ di pratica. Sono senza parole. Ora mi scrivono molto gentilmente che la tariffa da me acquistata era economy light e non economy saver. Peccato che al momento prenotazione ci sia solo economy saver al costo in più oltre al ticket di zero euro. Non avrei mai acquistato un biglietto senza bagaglio soprattutto perché viaggio con un bimbo di 4 anni. Ho rifatto anche ora la simulazione d acquisto e vi assicuro che nn c è altra tariffa che appare. Ho anche degli screen shot che dimostrano ciò che dico. Vivendo all estero Acquisto ogni anno fino a 4 biglietti aerei e non mi era mai capitato. Sicuramente non acquisterò più con lol.travel

Truffatori e basta

Truffatori e basta, non rispondono alla mail, state lontani da queste persone se si possono chiamare persone inc*lati 1500 passa euro per un biglietto aereo, la sede ~ a san marino non a rimini nn rispondono, andate dalla polizia postale tutti

Lol travel mai più!

Il giorno 26 ottobre 2023 attraverso Skyscanner,nella scelta di un volo per Mumbai, sono sta dirottata su Lol travel ove ho prenotato il volo stando attenta, come faccio sempre, ad inserire la garanzia della flessibilità e soprattutto l'assicurazione di viaggio ivi chiamata assicurazione top. Come è giusto che avvenga, al prezzo base iniziale, si sono aggiunte sistematicamente le tariffe relative alle due opzioni scelte. Arrivata alla fine del pagamento, poco prima di fare l'invio, m'è comparsa, una finestrella piccola che mi offriva eccezionalmente anche la garanzia della cancellazione del volo per soli 35 euro circa in totale. Ho accettato dunque anche questa garanzia di buon grado. Non avevo scelto prima quest'ultima garanzia di cancellazione del volo - fra le opzioni principali che il sito proponeva - per i suoi costi elevati, ma, visto che il prezzo era ora, attraverso la piccola finestra aggiuntiva apertasi a fine percorso, sceso ai minimi termini ho cliccato per il "sì" senza indugio. Soddisfatta d'aver avuto tutte e tre le opzioni (garanzia flessibilità - garanzia di cancellazione - assicurazione top) mi arrivava tuttavia la conferma solo delle prime 2. L'assicurazione viaggio non è stata stipulata ed io ero convinta di sì. Meno male che ho controllato bene la ricevuta che mi ha inviato Lol travel altrimenti sarei partita senza sapere di non avere alcuna assicurazione di viaggio. La finestrella finale in cui acconsentivo alla garanzia di cancellazione volo ha eliminato sistematicamente la richiesta di stipula assicurazione. Il conto finale è invariato, esattamente come se avessi anche l'assicurazione che è stata invece cambiata con la garanzia di cancellazione a prezzo pieno e nemmeno scontato. Scrivo ciò perché nessun altro possa cadere in un simile tranello. Una vera truffa

Da denuncia. TRUFFA Prima in fase di acquisto i prezzi cambiano e salgono 2-3 volte poi la transazione passa la carta viene addebitata. Ma dopo 2 ore mi arriva mail dicendo che la prenotazione non e’stata completata. EVITATE COME LA PESTE QUESTO SITO. Perdi tempo e truffatori UPDATE: you are ridicolous because now that price is still available from your site. Are u scam? Why don’t you delete that offer if the airlines doesnt confirm it?

Esperienza negativa IOl Travel. Ho prenotato una serie di voli attraverso il loro servizio, e purtroppo, ho incontrato numerosi inconvenienti che hanno compromesso il mio viaggio e la mia fiducia nell'agenzia. Inizialmente, ho ricevuto una comunicazione riguardante una modifica dell'orario del mio volo AZ1710. La sorpresa è stata scoprire che, in seguito a questa modifica apportata dalla compagnia aerea stessa, IOl Travel mi ha richiesto €55, spese di gestione incomprensibili e ingiustificate. Non solo queste spese non erano state preventivamente comunicate, ma ritengo assurdo doverle affrontare per una modifica non imputabile a me. Successivamente, ho affrontato la cancellazione del volo AZ1710 senza alcuna notifica da parte di IOl Travel. Ho scoperto la cancellazione soltanto consultando il sito web della compagnia aerea. Questo ha avuto un impatto significativo sulla mia pianificazione di viaggio e mi ha costretto a sostenere spese extra, come l'acquisto di un biglietto del treno da Catania a Fiumicino, comportando anche l'anticipazione della mia partenza di un giorno. Mi aspettavo un'assistenza adeguata in queste circostanze, specialmente perché avevo acquistato l'opzione Flex e l'assicurazione. Tuttavia, non solo non ho ricevuto alcuna agevolazione, ma mi sono sentito totalmente abbandonato a me stesso in una situazione di emergenza. Loro si sono giustificati dicendo che non avevano colpe sulla cancellazioni voli e non hanno proposto alternative!! Inoltre, ho cercato di comunicare la mia insoddisfazione e richiesta di rimborso tramite email, ma le risposte sono state negative e poco collaborative. Ho riscontrato una mancanza di trasparenza e di volontà nel risolvere la questione in modo soddisfacente. Il modo in cui IOl Travel ha gestito queste situazioni ha evidenziato un'assenza totale di considerazione e assistenza verso il cliente, creando disagio e costi aggiuntivi ingiustificati. Non posso raccomandare questo servizio e suggerirei di valutare attentamente alternative più affidabili e trasparenti.

State lontano da sta gente!!!!! Mi hanno cancellato il volo per le Seychelles e l'ho scoperto al check in partenza. Ho perso i risparmi di un anno per un viaggio che non farò mai!!! Non sono più rintracciabili... Come si chiama questo???? Ditemelo voi.... Nel 2023 queste cose dovrebbero essere perseguite ma siamo in Italia del resto

Good experience, just some items to improve in the customer experiencie

Initially my experience was a but scary because I bought my ticket and the booking reference sent via email didn't match with the airlines but if you actually create your account into lol.travel's portal you'll find your booking reference that matchs the airline. It's just a matter of improving their UX when sending confirmation emails. Besides that, I could fly and everything was good. The other pain I had is that, I paid for a FLEXIBLE GUARANTEE TICKET but it's kind of useless because when I was trying to use it, I should still pay a lot which was not super clear when buying. My bad experience on that end, is that I followed the steps that were in the terms and conditions and sent 7 different emails through their customer support form and didn't work. But then I could open a different case through their site's customer support (not through the portal) and I could receive a quick response from the team. So I'd say I can trust this company but they just need to improve the user experience and references to make the customers feel safe and understand that normally people pays too much for flights to not feel safe when something is needed. Thanks.

Good service and prompt refund

I made a booking for an eight night stay at at a hotel in Alanya, Turkey with lol.travel.The price was hundreds of pounds cheaper than their closest competitor. Due to my becoming unwell I had to cancel ahead of leaving England. I had a partial refund per the booking terms and had great support from the customer service department. I had also checked with the hotel that my booking was valid. I would happily book again with lol ....and, hopefully, be able to avail of said booking.

Avoid this website. NEVER process large transactions as it may result into glitching. I booked a ticket from Malta to Shanghai and it costs FORTUNES. The payment didn’t process and I had to contact my bank to stop the card. In my opinion, it’s a scam

Follow up review

This is my second review of lol.travel, actually more of a follow up to my original review as I had booked the hotel but had not actually stayed there at the time of writing so didn't really know the outcome. I'm very pleased to say that if I could give lol.travel ten stars I would! The hotel is amazing and everything was booked and organised exactly as lol.travel promised, all at an amazing price - far, far cheaper than any other booking agent could offer. Booked a hotel in tenerife through trivago as was the cheapest. Looked at reviews the next day and was quite concerned that we had been scammed so double checked with hotel to see if booking was active and it was. Went through to check in and everything was perfect, no issues whatsoever.

Check your currency before purchasing!!!

Clicked a link to a promotion which took me to Lol.travel. When I was satisfied with the offer I moved to purchase the ticket. For some reason, and I'm not saying that it was lol.travel's mistake, but the currency changed to euro without any request or clear indication! Needless to say I spent money I didn't have... I immediately e-mailed and requested a cancelation and a refund. Explaining my situation in detail. They then replied asking me to explain the situation in detail.... which I did again. I then later received an email which stated that I should confirm my decision and that I have till 7pm Italian time to do so... This was at 11 pm Italian time. I was very emotional and frustrated by how they could feel justified by giving such a small window which they claimed was 24hours for such a weighted decision. After nagging they agreed to: "We inform you that cancellation of your ticket outbound + inbound, before departure*, is possible with a penalty of € 92.00 for every adult passenger (2) + € 55.00 for our management fees) I know to some people this isn't much but my country that's almost a months rent....

Administration fees in the last step of booking appear!

I booked a plane ticket with them through scyscanner. They offered the best price. Second best price was 30€ costlier then lol.travel At the very last step of booking confirmation an additional administration fee of 60€ was revealed. So in the end I payed 30€ more then I would have if I chose the second best price which was with kiwi. I do not appreciate hidden fees on the last step when you already put in all your private information ect.

Avoid such blurry travel agents

Avoid such blurry travel agents. I booked through them. My travel schedule is adjusted 2 days before departure due to insufficient transfer time. While an acquaintance of ours was on the same flight to our final destination on a later flight, so with a short transfer time. Whether I want to transfer 55EURO, otherwise my booking will not be confirmed with the airline and I will therefore not fly! If you want to speak to someone, forget it, everything is done by email.

I booked the Central Park West Hostel…

I booked the Central Park West Hostel just because of the very low price and was very surprised about some negative comments. Price/value relationship is excellent. Of course you should not expect luxury for $40!! I had everything I needed, the room was clean, my bathroom did not have a sink, but right next to my room I could use another bathroom. It suited perfectly to my needs. The staff were awesome and extremely helpful, the location with a few Metro lines around the corner, supermarkets very close, a few Restaurants, bus stops ver near. What else would you expect?

The Moscow Metro Museum of Art: 10 Must-See Stations

There are few times one can claim having been on the subway all afternoon and loving it, but the Moscow Metro provides just that opportunity.  While many cities boast famous public transport systems—New York’s subway, London’s underground, San Salvador’s chicken buses—few warrant hours of exploration.  Moscow is different: Take one ride on the Metro, and you’ll find out that this network of railways can be so much more than point A to B drudgery.

The Metro began operating in 1935 with just thirteen stations, covering less than seven miles, but it has since grown into the world’s third busiest transit system ( Tokyo is first ), spanning about 200 miles and offering over 180 stops along the way.  The construction of the Metro began under Joseph Stalin’s command, and being one of the USSR’s most ambitious building projects, the iron-fisted leader instructed designers to create a place full of svet (radiance) and svetloe budushchee (a radiant future), a palace for the people and a tribute to the Mother nation.

Consequently, the Metro is among the most memorable attractions in Moscow.  The stations provide a unique collection of public art, comparable to anything the city’s galleries have to offer and providing a sense of the Soviet era, which is absent from the State National History Museum.  Even better, touring the Metro delivers palpable, experiential moments, which many of us don’t get standing in front of painting or a case of coins.

Though tours are available , discovering the Moscow Metro on your own provides a much more comprehensive, truer experience, something much less sterile than following a guide.  What better place is there to see the “real” Moscow than on mass transit: A few hours will expose you to characters and caricatures you’ll be hard-pressed to find dining near the Bolshoi Theater.  You become part of the attraction, hear it in the screech of the train, feel it as hurried commuters brush by: The Metro sucks you beneath the city and churns you into the mix.

With the recommendations of our born-and-bred Muscovite students, my wife Emma and I have just taken a self-guided tour of what some locals consider the top ten stations of the Moscow Metro. What most satisfied me about our Metro tour was the sense of adventure .  I loved following our route on the maps of the wagon walls as we circled the city, plotting out the course to the subsequent stops; having the weird sensation of being underground for nearly four hours; and discovering the next cavern of treasures, playing Indiana Jones for the afternoon, piecing together fragments of Russia’s mysterious history.  It’s the ultimate interactive museum.

Top Ten Stations (In order of appearance)

Kievskaya station.

Kievskaya Station went public in March of 1937, the rails between it and Park Kultury Station being the first to cross the Moscow River.  Kievskaya is full of mosaics depicting aristocratic scenes of Russian life, with great cameo appearances by Lenin, Trotsky, and Stalin.  Each work has a Cyrillic title/explanation etched in the marble beneath it; however, if your Russian is rusty, you can just appreciate seeing familiar revolutionary dates like 1905 ( the Russian Revolution ) and 1917 ( the October Revolution ).

Mayakovskaya Station

Mayakovskaya Station ranks in my top three most notable Metro stations. Mayakovskaya just feels right, done Art Deco but no sense of gaudiness or pretention.  The arches are adorned with rounded chrome piping and create feeling of being in a jukebox, but the roof’s expansive mosaics of the sky are the real showstopper.  Subjects cleverly range from looking up at a high jumper, workers atop a building, spires of Orthodox cathedrals, to nimble aircraft humming by, a fleet of prop planes spelling out CCCP in the bluest of skies.

Novoslobodskaya Station

Novoslobodskaya is the Metro’s unique stained glass station.  Each column has its own distinctive panels of colorful glass, most of them with a floral theme, some of them capturing the odd sailor, musician, artist, gardener, or stenographer in action.  The glass is framed in Art Deco metalwork, and there is the lovely aspect of discovering panels in the less frequented haunches of the hall (on the trackside, between the incoming staircases).  Novosblod is, I’ve been told, the favorite amongst out-of-town visitors.

Komsomolskaya Station

Komsomolskaya Station is one of palatial grandeur.  It seems both magnificent and obligatory, like the presidential palace of a colonial city.  The yellow ceiling has leafy, white concrete garland and a series of golden military mosaics accenting the tile mosaics of glorified Russian life.  Switching lines here, the hallway has an Alice-in-Wonderland feel, impossibly long with decorative tile walls, culminating in a very old station left in a remarkable state of disrepair, offering a really tangible glimpse behind the palace walls.

Dostoevskaya Station

Dostoevskaya is a tribute to the late, great hero of Russian literature .  The station at first glance seems bare and unimpressive, a stark marble platform without a whiff of reassembled chips of tile.  However, two columns have eerie stone inlay collages of scenes from Dostoevsky’s work, including The Idiot , The Brothers Karamazov , and Crime and Punishment.   Then, standing at the center of the platform, the marble creates a kaleidoscope of reflections.  At the entrance, there is a large, inlay portrait of the author.

Chkalovskaya Station

Chkalovskaya does space Art Deco style (yet again).  Chrome borders all.  Passageways with curvy overhangs create the illusion of walking through the belly of a chic, new-age spacecraft.  There are two (kos)mosaics, one at each end, with planetary subjects.  Transferring here brings you above ground, where some rather elaborate metalwork is on display.  By name similarity only, I’d expected Komsolskaya Station to deliver some kosmonaut décor; instead, it was Chkalovskaya that took us up to the space station.

Elektrozavodskaya Station

Elektrozavodskaya is full of marble reliefs of workers, men and women, laboring through the different stages of industry.  The superhuman figures are round with muscles, Hollywood fit, and seemingly undeterred by each Herculean task they respectively perform.  The station is chocked with brass, from hammer and sickle light fixtures to beautiful, angular framework up the innards of the columns.  The station’s art pieces are less clever or extravagant than others, but identifying the different stages of industry is entertaining.

Baumanskaya Statio

Baumanskaya Station is the only stop that wasn’t suggested by the students.  Pulling in, the network of statues was just too enticing: Out of half-circle depressions in the platform’s columns, the USSR’s proud and powerful labor force again flaunts its success.  Pilots, blacksmiths, politicians, and artists have all congregated, posing amongst more Art Deco framing.  At the far end, a massive Soviet flag dons the face of Lenin and banners for ’05, ’17, and ‘45.  Standing in front of the flag, you can play with the echoing roof.

Ploshchad Revolutsii Station

Novokuznetskaya Station

Novokuznetskaya Station finishes off this tour, more or less, where it started: beautiful mosaics.  This station recalls the skyward-facing pieces from Mayakovskaya (Station #2), only with a little larger pictures in a more cramped, very trafficked area.  Due to a line of street lamps in the center of the platform, it has the atmosphere of a bustling market.  The more inventive sky scenes include a man on a ladder, women picking fruit, and a tank-dozer being craned in.  The station’s also has a handsome black-and-white stone mural.

Here is a map and a brief description of our route:

Start at (1)Kievskaya on the “ring line” (look for the squares at the bottom of the platform signs to help you navigate—the ring line is #5, brown line) and go north to Belorusskaya, make a quick switch to the Dark Green/#2 line, and go south one stop to (2)Mayakovskaya.  Backtrack to the ring line—Brown/#5—and continue north, getting off at (3)Novosblodskaya and (4)Komsolskaya.  At Komsolskaya Station, transfer to the Red/#1 line, go south for two stops to Chistye Prudy, and get on the Light Green/#10 line going north.  Take a look at (5)Dostoevskaya Station on the northern segment of Light Green/#10 line then change directions and head south to (6)Chkalovskaya, which offers a transfer to the Dark Blue/#3 line, going west, away from the city center.  Have a look (7)Elektroskaya Station before backtracking into the center of Moscow, stopping off at (8)Baumskaya, getting off the Dark Blue/#3 line at (9)Ploschad Revolyutsii.  Change to the Dark Green/#2 line and go south one stop to see (10)Novokuznetskaya Station.

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

Moscow subways are very clean

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

3. Arbatskaya Metro Station served as a shelter during the Soviet-era. It is one of the largest and the deepest metro stations in Moscow.

4. Biblioteka Imeni Lenina Metro Station was built in 1935 and named after the Russian State Library. It is located near the library and has a big mosaic portrait of Lenin and yellow ceramic tiles on the track walls.

5. Kievskaya Metro Station was one of the first to be completed in Moscow. Named after the capital city of Ukraine by Kiev-born, Nikita Khruschev, Stalin's successor.

6. Novoslobodskaya Metro Station  was built in 1952. It has 32 stained glass murals with brass borders.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.

8. Mayakovskaya Metro Station built in 1938. It was named after Russian poet Vladmir Mayakovsky. This is one of the most beautiful metro stations in the world with 34 mosaics painted by Alexander Deyneka.

9. Belorusskaya Metro Station is named after the people of Belarus. In the picture below, there are statues of 3 members of the Partisan Resistance in Belarus during World War II. The statues were sculpted by Sergei Orlov, S. Rabinovich and I. Slonim.

10. Teatralnaya Metro Station (Theatre Metro Station) is located near the Bolshoi Theatre.

An excellent read! Thanks for much for sharing the Russian metro system with us. We're heading to Moscow in April and exploring the metro stations were on our list and after reading your post, I'm even more excited to go visit them. Thanks again 🙂
