The Longest Journey [ ]

Crow recalls that by the time he was two weeks old he understood that his full name was "That Damn Bird", given to him by Umber lanos, his previous owner. Ianos tells April that he first met Crow (whom he calls "Bird") 50 years ago in Montrbea, however unlikely this seems. Crow himself suggests he is only 20 - which is still a considerable age by bird standards.

Crow was mistreated by the old man, being locked most of the time in a chest. This seems to have been Crow's lot for the past 20 years, although there was the one time he became drunk on a thimbleful of wine, and surprised some ladies - who were told that he could talk - by demonstrating his encyclopedic knowledge of Dolmari obscenities. Exactly where he may have picked up this vocabulary is never intimated, although this is knowledge the old man might possess.

Recently, Ianos lost him in a bet to the Cups Handler who subsequently offered him as a prize, and fed him Elgwandung. When April needs passage to Alais she discovers that Captain Nebevay owes Ianos a favour. She manages to convince him to transfer this favour to her when she wins back Crow for him, although not before renaming him "Crow" after Crowboy , her favourite cartoon character.

Ianos celebrates by getting drunk on Androgan Stone.liqour, and returns to bet Crow on a cups game. He manages to escape and follows April into Riverwood, where he signs up as April's comic sidekick and helper through the rest of the game. The player is able to call on Crow's aid with puzzles in the game, resulting in some varied gameplay. A sly self-reference to this creeps in when Crow complains to April that she only calls him when she needs him.

After April travels to Stark for the last time Crow becomes lonely and even returns to the old man, although he finds his spot on the jetty in the Marcurian harbour empty. He has a cup of whiskey with Brian Westhouse, and sees Abnaxus apparently returning to his home in the north.

Crow really proves his worth in the Guardians Realm. Although somehow he has discovered the infamy of crows in Stark, he is appeased when April explains the 'Crowboy' connection. He wants to be a hero like Crowboy and so, despite his reservations regarding magic, carries water in his beak from the Well of making for April so she can pass the Trial of matter. He disappears for a short time afterwards, making April fret over what had happened to him, but soon reappears frantically following April so he doesn't end up stranded in the Guardian's Realm.

Lastly, he appears in the House all worlds with Lady Alvane in the Epilogue to TLJ, aged and with grey feathers. Many fans have concluded from that, given his friendship in the past with April, this proves the identification of April with Lady Alvane.

Dreamfall [ ]

Crow returns in Dreamfall, as quirky and cheerful as ever. He and April went their separate ways 8 years ago, because April was having trouble re-adjusting to life after heroism. According to Crow she just abandoned him on their journey through the Border Mountains, leaving him lonely and bewildered. He had gained a small amount of fame through his association with April, however, and was inducted into the Guild of Sidekicks, who declared him Sidekick of the Month.

In the following years Crow somehow ended up with a fiancee, but the prospect of getting married and settling down was just too much for him. He left her for a "voyage of self discovery", but as he had learned this phrase from April during a dark period of her life he understood this to mean acting selfishly, and becoming miserable and unhappy. At some point he lost his bilinguality of Na'ven and bird twitter, specialising in speaking with people ("Most birdbrains can't hold both, so I've specialised. The world's a lot less annoying now that I don't understand what all these birds are going on about all the time"). After a couple of wrong turns, he ended up at the Dark Peoples Libary, where he spent his time reading, and finally met up with April again when she came to meet the White Dragon. Crow tried to remain angry with April given her abandonment of him, but was too pleased to see her to keep it up for very long.

The White Dragon had apparently taken a shine to Crow, calling him 'funny bird', and told him that he was special and had a purpose. According to her Crow was somehow able to help April Shift to the Guardian's Realm, and remained at her side when she returned to Marcuria. Back as April's sidekick Crow ferried supplies to help break Zoe Castillo out of Friars Keep, and offered his moral support. This return to his old role made for a rude awakening when April refused to help Zoe in her quest. Appalled, Crow accused April of being selfish and went with Zoe on his own.

Deciding to become Zoe's sidekick, Crow introduced her to Brian Westhouse, who arranged travel via Cloudshipback to the Library to meet the White Dragon. Crow was able to guide them back to the moving city by his memory of its smell on the wind, although he mistrusts the artifice of the Cloudship. When the White helped Zoe travel back to Stark Crow was surprised to see her disappear but not that surprised, commenting that in his experience all human girls seemed to have special powers and a destiny. Besides, though he didn't mention it, A Deep Blue Mirror.

This is the last time Crow is seen in Dreamfall. However, in the scene near the end where the White Dragon is attacked by an unseen enemy, some have claimed to hear the sound of flapping wings, leading to speculation about Crow's involvement.

The most involving story of any computer game, ever.

The Good This is one of those rare games that can be described as a work of art. Visually stunning, emotionally involving, well-acted and well scored with great dialogue. Wildly imaginative, at times hysterically funny and at times bordering on the profound. The Bad The dialogue is terrific but there's a bit too much of it. How long can you stare at a static screen listening to very long conversations? And it has the amnesia problem common to many adventure games as the main character asks people she's known for months the sort of questions you ask people when you first meet. Oh, and the folk tales in it are all dull. The Bottom Line This game is like a novel, completely immersive and involving. You never want it to end.

Great game, tough far from perfect

The Good Gee, where to start? The Longest Journey is a great game, its overflowing with creativity and originality, its got a great epic storyline and it's got tremendous production values. Graphically speaking the game is stunning, even on a 16-bit video card the game looks amazing, with some gorgeously drawn backgrounds with very well blended polygonal characters on top. Great sound and music complement the artwork, and the fmv cut scenes are no slouches either (tough the character animation there is somewhat awkward).

Technically the game is great, but it's the creative side of things that make it a winner. The story is great, rivaling the "epicness" of the Final Fantasy games, and without the need to add cheap melodramas. But the characters are outstanding, the entire cast is excellently developed and backed by a superb voice acting , especially April. And speaking of April, she has got to be the best female character ever to grace a videogame, bar none. She's neither the kick-ass babe/femme fatale type that is so popular nowadays on PC games (Tanya, Lara, etc.) nor the "Touching" type so popular in console games (Square, hello??). She's a complex yet down to earth and genuinely interesting character, with a very cynical personality. In fact, she's almost like a more humbler, less-stereotyped version of Daria, and I found myself laughing and smirking at April's sarcastic and often feminist remarks and observations. A feat I am unable to perform when watching MTV's snobbish/ stereotyped female star.

The interface too is refined with a nice pop-up menu for actions and a feature that makes your pointer blink whenever the action you want to perform (with an item) is possible, saving you the hassle of going through those annoying "can't do this" messages.

A great story and characters coupled with tremendous production values! You couldn't possibly go wrong here, could you?? well... The Bad I have a series of gripes with this game, first of all it's buggy, something which I cannot understand given the "on-tracks" linear nature of adventure games, seriously, I suffered it all on this game, even the dreaded Police Station bug (tough thankfully there's a patch for this one).

Second and more important: dialogue. Oh god the dialogue! it's so good, and so well acted....yet it's made sooooo utterly looong and booooring. You watch the characters talk and talk from the same static faaaaaar view every single time. Why was this made so? couldn't they at least make some close-ups pop up with a generic background? I'm not expecting a cinematic treatment like in Gabriel Knight 3, since there is no 3D environment here, but c'mon! Plus it's made more boring by the lack of interaction, Planescape: Torment is a game with at least twice as much dialogue as this one (and not voiced-over mind you) but it's never made boring because the dialogue is selected by YOU, even if to just say ok, or a-ha. On TLJ you select your dialogue too, but just the starting subject/query, so you click on an option and Wham! 1-2 minutes of conversation go by without any involvement of your part at all.

This has a bigger impact on game play than you think, since a lot of the puzzles in the game are simply talked trough. That's right, you'll find as you advance the game that the ratio of item/logic-puzzles vs. talking "puzzles" goes down, and hits an all time low on say...the Alatien village. Picture this: you have to prove to a guard that you are the "Windbringer" and to do so you must prove your knowledge of 4 ancient stories. What do you do? you embark on a quest to find the stories? you face a deduction puzzle were you have to make up the stories? nope. You just go around the village and ask the villagers to tell you the stories. yup. And yes, they are LOOOOOOOOONG, and you must listen through 5 minutes each (at least, tough they seem like 30-40 minutes each actually) just so you get the right options to answer when you are questioned by the guard.

This also brings me to another thing: the game's too easy. Period. The few puzzles around are rather easy to figure and most of the time involve Fed-Ex puzzles, and as you can see from the example above much of the game's bulk is made of knowing when to talk to the right person. The Bottom Line Essentially The Longest Journey is a tremendous gaming experience, but not a memorable adventure game. When I think of TLJ in terms of the story and characters, I think of it as a masterpiece of creativity, but when I think of it as a game all I can think of is of an easy adventure which required a LOT of stamina to endure.

Stunning. Absolutely brilliant.

The Good I just finished TLJ, so I'm writing this with a very vivid memory of the game. And the conclusion? The Longest Journey is one of the most beautiful, immersive, spectacular games I've ever played.

The thing that strikes most about TLJ is its unique story; I'll admit I haven't read all that many books in my day, but I've yet to meet a story that's quite as... esoteric as that of TLJ. Somewhat reminiscent of an old favorite of mine, a movie called Flight of Dragons, TLJ manages to beautifully combine a classic fantasy world and a dark, futuristic yet contemporary Earth. The beauty of TLJ is how the writers managed to handle the distinction: Stark and Arcadia, the world of Logic and the world of Magic. The game is absolutely immersive: the open landscape and auspicious landmarks of Arcadia, next to the dark, claustrophobic Stark. Where in Arcadia I felt enthralled and free, in Stark the atmosphere is dark, brooding - as if evil is rampant on every corner... not once did I nearly jump from my seat, not because something surprising happened on the screen, but because the creepy atmosphere made me so nervous a creak or footstep in the house would freak me out.

Add to this the astounding artwork, the variety of settings (futuristic post-industrial world, a fantastic town, underwater city, deserted island and middle-of-center-of-everywhere realm) that are so beautifully thought out and drawn you can almost feel like you're there, spectacular background stories and depth of the game universe, and terrific voice acting to boot - and you've got yourself one of the deepest, most immersive games I've played since Star Control 2 .

If that's not enough, this game has what is quite possibly the single best soundtrack ever to be featured in a computer game, written and perfected by Bjorn Arve Lagim. The soundtrack alone is worth the purchase, take my word for it. The Bad Unfortunately TLJ is not without its flaws, two serious and one minor. To begin with, the game is plagued with bugs. On my machine (AMD Athlon 1GHz, A7V133 and GeForce2GTS) -- and, to my understanding, on most NVidia-based video cards -- the game crashes whenever I try to enter the police station through the front door. Luckily there's another way of doing this, but that's hardly an excuse. Moreover, the game refuses to run at 32 bits per pixel on my machine, resulting in very dithered animation, thereby detracting from the beautiful graphics. And, to top it off, whenever I switch tasks (using Win2k), the 3D textures and alpha become corrupt and I have to restart the game.

That isn't a big deal, but worse is the fact that at least three or four times throughout the game I got stuck because I failed my pixel-searching (specifically, I didn't locate the valve on the machine next to the Boarding House, the light switch in the police station toilettes and another something I can't remember offhand). Also, being a linear game (which, so long as not blatantly obvious a la Max Payne , is not necessarily a bad thing) it happened once or twice that I didn't realize I had to do something before another event occured (for example [ spoiler alert ]: giving the map to Flipper before the pizza appears in the trashcan). That is the only reason I had to use a walkthrough, and I hate using walkthroughs.

The third problem is the fact that towards the end of the game (starting from the sixth episode or so where it's not as apparent, becoming a much bigger issue towards the tenth episode) some puzzles get much, much easier; for example, killing the snapjaw and finding the talisman isn't even a puzzle; neither is getting rid of the Chaos Vortex and helping Adrian fend off Gordon. The fact that monsters like The Gribbler and the mutant at the end don't even give you a run for your money is both good and bad: good because it means you can't die and won't have to reload, bad because it emphasizes the linearity of the game (or rather shouts it out loud).

Finally I'd just like to say that while the above detracts from the game, it by no means makes it unplayable -- just be prepared for an occasional grunting. The Bottom Line An incredible game with a deep storyline, great graphics and incredible music. Recommended for anyone who loves adventures.

1001 Video Games

The Longest Journey appears in the book 1001 Video Games You Must Play Before You Die by General Editor Tony Mott.

The publisher of The Longest Journey , Egmont Interactive, actually tried to turn April Ryan into a pop icon to match Lara Croft. To that end, they cast a real-life model for April -- 23 years old psychology student Katja Koopmann of Bremen, Germany -- and toured the major magazine and newspaper offices with her, dressed up like April and sputtering lines like “I find April sympathetic” with a somewhat forced smile. Once the PR machine runs, even mediocre game sales can’t stop it. On her way to media star, the virtual April next recorded a song -- a dance remix of the 80’s Depeche Mode tune The Balance -- and Katja lend her voice. Egmont spiced April’s image up with exceptionally stupid PR blurb like “I want everything! Above all, I want to show the people of your world something of the life here!” Generally ignored by the public, the song entered the stores on April 14th ‘00, and stayed there. The corresponding video clip was never played on the music channels, the song didn’t appear in the radio shows, and nobody bought the CD.

The main character's name is April Ryan, just like Ryan in the game Dreamweb , also published by Empire Interactive Entertainment. And the plots of both games have some things in common (the hero who suffers from nightmares and must save a world he/she didn't even know existed in the first place).

  • A reference to the Monkey Island series : April's pet toy is called Constable Guybrush. And yes, it's a monkey.
  • There are lots of references to sci-fi movies and fantasy themes. Most prominent are the references to Brazil , for instance, which takes place on a red tape-clogged insensitive world much like stark. Take a look at the lobby of the Church of Voltec, it's an exact replica of the Information Retrieval building on Brazil . Also the whole repairmen puzzle where they refuse to work on the grounds that it would require a specific form for them to do so is a spoof of the "Central Services" sequence in the movie. They are even dressed in the same way! There are many more, some more subtle than others.
  • Want Star Wars references? check out that strange metal ball on the entrance to The Fringe Café. It says "Death Star" click on it and April will spout famous lines related to it, like "Let's blow this thing and go home!" and she even tries to imitate the voices!

The Longest Journey was originally made only to be released in Scandinavia, but it then grew with the sales to cover Europe and the U.S. By June of 2001, The Longest Journey had sold 250,000 copies worldwide, 90,000 of which were in America.

Version differences

In order to preserve his foreigner condition, Cortez had his nationality changed from Spanish to French and was renamed "Corthez" in the Spanish version.

Voice acting

  • The character Marcus, who only appears in the first chapter near the Fringe cafè, and only has two lines, was voiced by Ragnar Tørnquist , the director/lead designer of the game for the English release.
  • In the German pre-release demo version, April was voiced by German pop singer T-Seven known from the, at the time, successful Eurodance group Mr. President. In the final game, April was voiced by Stephanie Kindermann .

Based on these glimpses, the pre- Dreamfall part of TLJH would have likely consisted of at least two distinct story arcs: April and Crows' travels immediately after their return from the Guardian's Realm, showcasing her growing bitterness and his increasing dissatisfaction with it (2209 to early 2211), and April's efforts to join the resistance and to build up the colorful cast of rebels we meet in Dreamfall (ca. 2215 and beyond).

The game takes place in the parallel universes of magic-dominated Arcadia and industrial Stark. The protagonist, April Ryan , is an 18-year-old art student living in Stark, identified as a 'Shifter' capable of movement between these worlds, and tasked with restoring their essential Balance.

longest journey crow

The story begins in Stark, where a sleeping April unintentionally shifts to Arcadia and meets the 'White Dragon', who identifies her as the heroine of the coming story. Upon learning this, April is attacked by a dark 'Chaos Vortex' and awakens in Stark, where she dismisses her experience as a nightmare. The character 'Cortez' later surprises her by revealing his knowledge.

When surreal activity begins affecting her friends, April meets again with Cortez, who transports her to the Arcadian city Marcuria. There she meets Tobias Grensret, Vestrum of the Sentinel; learns Alltongue, the common language in Arcadia; and hears from Tobias that the Balance protecting both worlds is dissolving after the dereliction of its Guardian, and must be restored by the appearance of another.

To return to Stark, April visits Brian Westhouse, a friend of Cortez, who assists her return; Cortez then tells her of the organization known as the Vanguard or Church of Voltec. The next day, April consults Warren Hughes, a homeless boy who agrees to help April if she erases his criminal record and locates his missing sister, in doing which April finds a data cube on the Church of Voltec. Hughes then refers her to a hacker named Burns Flipper, who reveals that the wealthy magnate Jacob McAllen is head of the Vanguard, assisted by Gordon Halloway, a former candidate for Guardianship divided by the Vanguard into Chaos (in Arcadia) and Logic (in Stark), and gives her a false identification by which to infiltrate the Vanguard through its front company MTI.

Meeting Cortez and Father Raul in a Catholic cathedral, April is told that Arcadia is on the brink of war. Later in Arcadia, April meets the innkeeper, Benrime Salmin, and the clairvoyant Abnaxus, ambassador of the Venar, who identifies the coming danger. In the morning, April learns of four magical species, each of whom has prophecies of a savior who will restore the Balance, only to finally break it – and determines to visit one such species, the winged Alatian of the island Alais, having gained sea-travel by rescuing a talking bird that she names Crow. Before departing, she learns that she must defeat an alchemist named Roper Klacks, in order to free the ships' wind that he holds captive.

At Roper Klacks' Tower, April challenges Klacks to use his magic against her calculator, and wins. Immediately before her departure to Alais, Tobias gives April the Talisman representing the Balance. En route , April kills the monster known as 'Gribbler' while rescuing one of her captive Banda, whose species later give her the name 'April Bandu-embata' as a mark of gratitude and grant her part of the disc necessary to restore the Balance.

On the voyage to Alais, a 'Chaos Storm' attacks the ship, and April sabotages the ship's compass to restore its course. When the ship's captain seizes her Talisman, April attempts to retrieve it, and in so doing sinks the ship, whereupon the crew abandon her on a raft . She is taken prisoner by the Maerum, a Mermaid -like species related to the Alatian, but currently their enemies. In revealing their common ancestry, April fulfills a prophecy of the 'Waterstiller', a foretold savior of the Maerum.

After fulfilling the second prophecy by killing a 'Snapjaw', she is conveyed to fulfill the third by re-uniting the Maerum with the Alatians. After a series of tasks and in meeting with the Alatians' leader, April fulfills their prophecy by flying without wings, and convinces the Alatian to make peace with the Maerum.

In a coastal sea cave, the Teller's guard and the Maerum Queen bring stones which combine to form the second part of the Balance's disc; whereupon the Maerum convey April, at her own request, to the Blue Dragon, who gives April one of the disc's Jewels and takes her to a ship inhabited by the Dark People, who give April the third piece of the disc, and an astral map locating the Guardian's Realm.

At the Marcurian Harbor, April is attacked by the Chaos and returns to the Cathedral in Stark. There, Father Raul reveals that he is also a Sentinel Minstrum of Stark, and that Cortez is missing. On returning to her lodgings, April is caught by Gordon Halloway. She is rescued by another character, Lady Alvane, who teaches April to shift at will, and sends April to Abnaxus to receive the disc's final piece. April then returns to the White Dragon, who reveals herself as April's mother and dies, and a new White Dragon emerges from her egg.

Returned to Stark, April gives Flipper the star map to decipher, infiltrates MTI, and is captured by antagonist McAllen. Unable to escape, she surrenders her two jewels and the disc, and is then imprisoned. Upon escaping in pursuit of her object, she is trapped again; but rescued by Cortez. McAllen then reveals that he and Cortez are two Dragons (called 'Draic Kin', in-universe) meant to protect Stark, but at odds after McAllen's decision to re-unite the two worlds despite the risk of Chaos. The two then appear to die in combat. Retrieving the disc and the four jewels, April returns to Flipper, whom she finds dying after the seizure of her deciphered map by Gordon Halloway, and gains a copy from him, which she uses to locate the Guardian's Realm near the space station 'Morning Star'.

At the station, April frees Adrian, the derelict Guardian, and escapes with Halloway in pursuit. On her way to the Guardians' Tower, she imprisons the Chaos Vortex in her Talisman and later summons Crow, who helps her complete the necessary trials. Inside the tower, April re-unites Halloway with the Chaos Vortex to restore his candidacy as Guardian and returns to Stark and Arcadia.

In the Epilogue, the scene returns to Lady Alvane's home, where she has narrated the entire story to two youths, and where she reveals that the two worlds re-united under Gordon Halloway. Upon their departure, an aged and graying Crow enters, asking the tale of the " warrior princess " who won the war of the Balance, and she corrects his impression; a possible reference to the sequel, Dreamfall: The Longest Journey .

Lady Alvane

The Longest Journey [ ]

Lady Alvane is an elderly woman we see narrating the events of the game to a young man and woman during the prologue and epilogue to TLJ , describing it as a story she heard a long time ago.

When April is fleeing the agents of the Vanguard , she runs to the Fringe Cafe and sees the Mystery Door open for the first time, becoming her only escape route. This carries her through to the House of All Worlds , where she meets a "vaguely familiar"-looking woman who introduces herself as Lady Alvane. She gives April some much-needed advice and support, notably reassuring her that Emma wasn't seriously injured by being shot and will recover from the wound. She tells a weary April that she must go on, because "that is how the story goes". However, she also seems to have mysterious insight into April's future thoughts and feelings, claiming that though she will prevail, the pain won't go away - April will keep that with her forever.

Lady Alvane's home is pleasant and rustic, but there is clearly more to the House of All Worlds than we see. Lady Alvane says "this place is between, and everywhere" and, in speaking to her visitors, describes a time after the two worlds were reunited. The books on her shelves are either metaphysical or modern classics; the volumes include Moby Dick , Oliver Twist , The World According To Garp , Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance and The Holy Bible .

After the story is finished and her visitors leave, we see that Lady Alvane lives with a very old and very grey Crow .

Dreamfall Chapters [ ]

The very last scene of Dreamfall Chapters chronologically takes place shortly before Lady Alvane's meeting with April in the original game, as an elderly Saga returns to the House of All Worlds to prepare for her visiting guest. Before receiving April, she first greets an arriving Crow, whom she sends upstairs and out of sight. After taking her seat, she waits as a portal opens, and April steps through.

  • Though Lady Alvane does not appear and is not mentioned in Dreamfall , the fact that Kian Alvane shared her surname (a fact that goes unremarked by April), and his belief that he dimly recognises April, led to much fan speculation about their relationship.
