Booking a holiday? Take Martin Lewis' travel insurance masterclass

The world has been closed to travel over the past few months. Yet with restrictions likely to be lifted to some EU countries today, and many airlines and hotels offering new cheap holiday deals, many may consider going away later this year. Yet our Money Saving Expert Martin Lewis is warning it’s vital to consider your travel insurance situation first…

Before we talk travel insurance, if you’re going away ensure you’ve a valid EHIC first

As most of the permitted travel is likely to be to European Union countries, make sure you’ve got your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). It’s still valid till the end of this year – though from 1 January 2021, after the transition period ends, the EHIC's future is less certain (the Government says it's discussing the future of 'reciprocal healthcare arrangements', including the EHIC, with the EU, but we don’t know what that’ll be yet). The free EHIC gives you access to state-run hospitals and GPs in the EU at the same cost as a local. So, if it's free for them, it's free for you. So if travelling this year make sure you have yours, and everyone (including children) needs their own valid card. The expiry date of the card is on the front of it (bottom right). If yours is out of date you can renew if for FREE on the  official EHIC website . Beware imposter sites charging for it – don’t pay anyone, it’s free.  And remember this is no substitution for travel insurance. You’ll need that too. When should you get travel insurance?

My usual answer is ASAB - As Soon As You Book - as half the point of travel insurance is not only to cover you for while you’re away but to also protect you if something happens before you travel and have to cancel. But in March, when the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) warned against all non-essential travel, travel insurance came to a near standstill and many weren’t covering holidays booked after mid-March. So, booking a future holiday would have been very risky.

But now, a few insurers are offering policies again. The dirt-cheap deals have gone, so prices are higher, but it’s still affordable. For full details see Martin’s  Cheap annual travel insurance  guide, it’ll also link you through to travel insurance for over 65s and those with pre-existing medical conditions too.

No mainstream policies will cover travel while the FCO continues to warn against it, nor if that's lifted and your holiday's cancelled due to future UK or other countries' coronavirus travel restrictions.

However, some (not all) no-thrills new policies including from Coverwise (Silver), Axa (Silver) and CoverForYou (Silver) will cover medical costs relating to coronavirus if you catch it overseas or if you or a family member get coronavirus before travelling and then can't travel. It can cost as little as £18 annual European cover for an individual under 66, or £8.50 for a one-week single European trip. Many of these offer older travellers cover too though prices increase. Other insurers like Leisure Guard, Staysure, Saga and Post Office will only cover you for medical costs once abroad, but not if you want to cancel beforehand due to covid. So do double check any policy before buying.

For those with pre-existing medical conditions many insurers currently have coronavirus exclusions on their policies. But it’s worth trying specialist medical comparison sites. A good starting point is  All Clear Travel  and  Staysure , as we know they will provide coronavirus medical assistance while abroad, including repatriation if needed, but do check others.

Are those who already have annual travel insurance still covered?

You  may  be, but it depends on when you got the insurance and booked the holiday...

- Had cover and a holiday booked before mid-March?  If both were sorted before the FCO warned against all non-essential travel, most (though not all) policies should cover you for cancellation while the FCO warning remains in place. Though your insurer will want you to try for refunds from the airline/travel firm first. The same should apply if the Government lifts then reimposes restrictions - provided your holiday was booked before mid-March.

- Booked holiday after mid-March?  If you booked after the FCO warning, you WON'T be covered for cancellation due to coronavirus travel restrictions or disruption.

- Annual travel insurance lapsing and booked a holiday before mid-March? DON'T switch firm.   If your insurance is about to expire, renew your cover with the same firm ASAP if you can. Most offer a continuation of existing coronavirus cancellation cover for holidays booked before the FCO warning, so stick with it, as you can't get that cover elsewhere.

If the holiday was booked after mid-March, you're unlikely to be covered for cancellation, so switching isn't such an issue.

- Not got travel booked and annual policy expiring?  There's little benefit in renewing immediately, as you only get the coronavirus continuity on holidays that were in place pre-March.

If I’ve got annual travel insurance and am not planning to use it can I get a refund?

Maybe. Some major travel insurers including Axa, Churchill, Direct Line and Co-op are offering pro-rata refunds to customers who've ruled out travelling due to coronavirus and want to cancel their policy, though you can only do this if you haven't already made a claim on your policy. Plus, only consider doing this if you don't have any travel still booked and if you've sorted a refund for any trips that have been cancelled, as once you've cancelled your travel insurance, it obviously won't give you any further protection.

If you’re passport needs renewing do it ASAP

And just a final note, if your passport is at or nearing expiry, then renew it ASAP. The Passport Office is warning, understandably, that renewing is taking longer than the usual 3 weeks and I’m hearing reports that at the extreme, some are taking 3 months or more, while fast-track services and face-to-face appointments are suspended. So, if you've a trip planned later this summer sort it quickly. Apply via the official  Gov site  and an adult passport costs £75.50 online (£85.50 for the jumbo 50-page passport) or £85 by paper (£95 for the 50-pager). And 'no passport' isn't covered on most travel insurance.

Financial expert and consumer champion, Martin Lewis has issued another stark warning to British holidaymakers that could save them £1,000’s. Martin Lewis’s MoneySavingExpert.com January weekly newsletter issued its annual warning to travellers to make sure that you ‘Get travel insurance ASAB – As Soon As you Book’.

Martin Lewis also spoke out about this on an interview with This Morning on the 9 th January to reiterate his standard ‘ASAB’ advice for travellers. This clearly shows how important this topic is and how much emphasis we need to place on sorting out your cover quickly.

January is the peak time in the UK for holiday bookings as the summer travel season rapidly approaches. Martin Lewis himself says ‘every year without fail, someone who’s been diagnosed with cancer or another serious condition, asks me what to do if they can’t travel because they need treatment and they can’t cancel their holiday’.

As Martin Lewis says, “that’s what travel insurance is for, they say that haven’t got around to doing it yet”. Half of the value of travel insurance is for the period before you travel, if anything happens or goes wrong that stops you from going away.

MoneySavingExpert.com’s weekly newsletter in January issued another serious warning about the potential risks of not taking travel insurance early. The newsletter article was titled ‘Booked a holiday abroad? Or about to…? Get travel insurance ASAB – As Soon As you Book. Delay and you’ll be unprotected. You can get travel insurance for only £9 a week’.

In this travel guide by our team of travel insurance experts, we review the latest Martin Lewis travel insurance advice. Our experts will help to explain how travel insurance works and how to save money, but also how to protect yourself from the moment you book.

60-Second Summary – Top Martin Lewis travel insurance tips

One of the best tips for travellers and holidaymakers in the UK is when we ask, ‘Does Martin Lewis recommend travel insurance?’. The answer is very clearly yes Martin Lewis strongly recommends travel insurance and he also recommends getting it ‘ASAB – As Soon As you Book’.

Holidaymakers seem to be making the same mistakes every year and leaving themselves exposed to potentially losing money on holiday bookings. In yet another warning issued in January, Martin Lewis recommended to take out travel insurance instantly to avoid losing money.

  • Every year, Martin Lewis makes the same recommendation that travellers should get their travel insurance sorted out as soon as possible or ‘ASAB – As Soon As you Book’ to avoid losing money.
  • Martin Lewis said on ITV ’s This Morning with Holly Willoughby , he gets a Tweet from a viewer every year asking, “what can I do if I’ve been diagnosed with cancer, and I can’t travel?”.
  • Travel insurance is specifically for helping you when something goes wrong, and it covers the costs of flight or ferry cancellations, medical problems before and during your trip, and lost or stolen luggage.
  • Exclusions can be extremely costly and it’s extremely important to make sure that you check your policy wording carefully for medical, sports, and geographical exclusions.
  • Martin Lewis also recommends checking with your credit cards or bank to see if you have any free travel insurance benefits included with them, which could potentially save you money.
  • What does Martin Lewis say about travel insurance?

Martin Lewis says “Everybody should get their travel insurance ASAB – As Soon As you Booked, do not forget this!”. He told ITV’s This Morning, “someone will Tweet me every year and it’s a serious point, saying that I’ve been diagnosed with breast cancer or another serious illness, and I won’t be able to travel but my airline says I can’t cancel my seat”.

The interview goes on to explain that Martin Lewis receives the same messages every year from a viewer, asking what to do if they can’t travel because of a serious medical condition, but they don’t have travel insurance. This is why Mr Lewis is very clear on saying that you need to get your travel insurance sorted straight away.

Getting the best and cheapest travel insurance can be difficult, and especially for people with pre-existing medical conditions. Martin Lewis travel insurance recommendations on MoneySavingExpert.com, covers a lot about this topic and other ways to get the best and cheapest travel insurance.

  • Does Martin Lewis recommend travel insurance?

It would be pretty difficult to not recommend that people take out travel insurance, especially considering the potential risks and costs of not having cover. Martin Lewis travel insurance advice recommends that you take out a travel policy and that you get it as soon as you’ve booked (ASAB) your holiday or travel (either independently or through a travel agent ).

Martin Lewis travel insurance TOP recommendation is “Get it ASAB or As Soon As you Book” taken from an interview on This Morning with Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield in July 2018 and again with The Independent in February 2023.

Here’s a quote from an article about Martin Lewis on The Independent :

The Independent logo

The Independent – 22nd February 2023

“Each spring without fail, someone asks me a heart breaking question, I’ve just been diagnosed with cancer or another serious illness and I need long-term treatment, so I can’t go on holiday. What can I do?”

As Martin Lewis strongly recommends on any of his travel insurance interviews, blogs or guides, get it ‘ASAB’.

As Mr Lewis also points out on MoneySavingExpert.com in his Martin Lewis travel insurance guides, around half of the value of your policy is before you actually travel. Taking out travel insurance before you actually travel won’t affect the cost but it will significantly increase the value.

Some of the information on the Martin Lewis travel insurance sections still relate quite heavily towards Coronavirus related issues. This is slightly outdated now as these are fortunately no longer a major issue for many travellers.

  • What does travel insurance cover?

A traditional or standard travel insurance policy is solely designed to protect you and your family against financial loss before, during and after your trip.

This simply means that most good travel insurance policies will provide you with financial protection for most of the usual risks relating to overseas and domestic holidays , such as:

  • Cancellation or curtailment
  • Medical emergencies
  • Loss or theft of possessions
  • Holiday disruptions
  • Virus’s and diseases (e.g. COVID-19)
  • Sports and activities
  • Are all travel insurance policies the same?

Sadly no, there is a significant difference between a good travel insurance policy and a lower level travel insurance policy. Also, it’s not always true to say that “you get what you pay for” either, because some policies offer great value for money whereas others can be overpriced.

You should always check your policy wording and terms & conditions very carefully before you accept any cover. It’s also worth noting that comparing several travel insurance quotes is the best way to make sure that you’ve got the right cover. You can do this through your own research, via comparison sites or by talking to a travel insurance expert.

Below is an example of what a ‘good travel insurance’ policy should protect you for.

Note : Every travel insurance policy has its own limits of cover and will provide different levels of coverage, so check your policy documents very carefully.

  • Martin Lewis travel insurance need to knows

There are also 10 need to knows about travel insurance on the Martin Lewis guide to travel insurance that are very useful hints and tips. Travel insurance policies do vary significantly from one insurer to another, so it’s not just the price that you need to think about.

1) Take out travel insurance as soon as you can once you’ve booked your trip to cover for cancellations due to illness or other unforeseen issues.

One of the key tips and main points on all of the Martin Lewis travel insurance guides is to make sure that buy travel insurance as soon as you book your holiday or travel. Unfortunately, lots of us leave taking out travel insurance to the last minute or we buy it just before we travel which significantly reduces the value of your policy.

One of the biggest elements of travel insurance is the cover and protection that it provides before you travel. Some of those events can include cancellation due to medical problems, redundancy, injury through an accident and even death in the family.

Most consumers don’t even consider these elements or events when booking their holidays and thinking about travel insurance. Roughly 50% of the value of a travel insurance policy is in the time leading up to when you are due to travel.

Martin Lewis travel insurance recommends ASAB which means ‘as soon as you’ve booked’ And this is a great rule to follow.

Note: This also applies for people who are booking holidays in the UK, and it’s not just for overseas travel.

2) Always check your travel insurance policy exclusions to see what you’re actually covered for (e.g. Alcohol related exclusions, extreme sports or pre-existing medical conditions).

Similar to most of the general insurance and personal insurance policies, travel insurance also comes with a standard set of exclusions that can vary from one insurer to another. You should check your policy documents and terms and conditions very carefully before you travel.

Here’s a list of standard exclusions and explanations:

Alcohol related accidents or injuries

Alcohol related accidents or injuries are typical and standard exclusions on most travel insurance policies. This exclusion has applied for several years now since the increase of alcohol and drug related injuries from UK holidaymakers travelling abroad. If you are found to have alcohol or drugs in your system at the time of the accident or injury then your claim is likely to be refused.

Extreme sports and hazardous activities

Extreme sports and hazardous activities will also generally be excluded from most standard travel insurance policies, unless they offer specific activities (e.g. winter sports, sailing, diving, motorcycle riding etc.). You have a number of options if you intend to take part in extreme sports while you are on holiday, or for people who are travelling abroad specifically to take part in dangerous activities.

There are a number of organisations for certain activities to speak to if you intend to take part in sports overseas.

You can get advice from :

BMC Logo

These organisations will be able to provide useful information which may be of use when looking for the right travel insurance cover.

You can also get advice and quotes from an extreme sports travel insurance specialist to get the right cover. For more information and a list of specialists you can visit the British Insurance Brokers Association website.

British Insurance Broker's Association (BIBA) Logo

What to do if you can’t find travel insurance

There are certain options and support mechanisms that are available to you if you’re struggling to find life insurance. One of the bodies to support consumers with life insurance is the British Insurance Brokers Association (BIBA) which covers all insurance services in the United Kingdom.

BIBA provides a Find Insurance service that allows you to search for a recommended member who might be able to help you.

  • Pre-existing medical conditions

Pre-existing medical conditions will usually need to be covered with a specialist policy or will often be excluded from a standard travel insurance policy. You will need to check your policy wording carefully and you can seek advice from a medical conditions specialist.

Note : You must disclose your medical history when you take out a travel insurance policy, or your cover might be invalid. If you fail to tell your travel insurance provider about a specific pre-existing medical condition then your claims will usually be refused.

Invalid travel documents

Invalid travel documents is also an unfortunate possibility when you travel overseas, such as an out of date passport, invalid visa documents or other travel documents that are required. You are responsible to ensure that you have the appropriate travel documents and that they are all valid (e.g. not out of date).

Note: You should always check the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) website to find out which documents are required and any rules for entry. Make sure that you allow sufficient time to be able to prepare yourself and any requirements for entry to your destination.

Policy excess

Policy excess is the amount that you would have to pay to your travel insurance provider in the event of a claim. Your excess should be explained to you on your policy documents and you might be able to select different excess levels, also there will be different excess levels for different claims.

Example : if you require hospital treatment while you are overseas and the cost is £2,000 for the procedure and medication, you might have to pay £300 excess before you claim will be paid.

Excesses can vary from as little as £100 up to as much as £500 or even £1,000 for bigger claims (e.g. repatriation back to the UK). You might also find that it’s not worth claiming small amounts because the excess will be more than the claim.

Private medical treatment or private hospitals

Private medical treatment or private hospitals may also be excluded as these are not typically included with standard travel insurance coverage. Some higher level travel insurance policies will include private hospital treatment, but you just need to check first.

You should always double check your documents to make sure that you are allowed to have treatment in your chosen hospital or facility. Some insurance companies will accept private hospital treatment as standard for certain procedures or medical emergencies, while others won’t.

Note : If you’re unhappy with a claim being refused or you feel that you have been treated unfairly then you should refer your claim to the Financial Ombudsman Service (FOS) for further advice.

3) It is extremely important to disclose any medical conditions that you are asked about on your application for travel insurance.

Dangerous or hazardous locations are often excluded from most standard travel insurance policies. You should always check to see whether your chosen destination is currently listed on the unsafe travel locations. You can check the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) website to get the latest destinations on the list.

It can be difficult to talk about your medical history and it’s not always something that you will want to disclose on a travel insurance application. It is important to be open and honest about your health to avoid any potential issues with claims.

If you fail to disclose a pre-existing medical condition on your application then your policy could be invalid and any claims might be refused. When you apply for travel insurance, you will be asked questions about your health, medical history and lifestyle.

If you want more information then you should visit our Martin Lewis pre existing travel insurance guide. Alternatively you can get a medical travel insurance quote online CLICK HERE .

4) Make sure that your travel insurance policy covers you to travel to your chosen destination, especially for annual or multi-trip policies.

There are two standard types of travel insurance policies which are ‘European’ and ‘Worldwide’ cover. The slightly confusing thing is that European travel insurance generally covers you to travel to a number of other non-European locations.

Annual travel insurance cover for non-European travel

If you buy annual travel insurance cover then you should make sure that it covers your potential destinations for the whole year. Most annual travel insurance policies can’t be changed once you’ve paid for them and started your cover.

It does seem slightly strange to call it ‘European’ travel insurance when in reality they cover a number of non-European destinations. Some of the locations that are often included outside of Europe include:

You should check to make sure that any potential destinations are covered under the travel insurance policy you are looking at.

Another slightly strange anomaly with European travel insurance is that not all policies include Spain (including Canaries and Balearic Islands) as standard. These can often be added at an extra cost but this may make the cover less cost-effective.

Some of the best European travel insurance policies include:

  • Insure and Go

5) Is it worth getting your free EHIC or GHIC to help you with medical treatment costs overseas and do they replace the need for travel insurance?

The European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) and the new version which is the Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) are free for UK residents. The GHIC came in to operation from the 1st January 2021, and it gives you access to treatment from state-run medical facilities and hospitals in the European Union (EU).

The main feature of the GHIC is that it provides the holder with treatment at the same cost as what national residents would pay. Most other European countries don’t operate the same National Health Service (NHS) as in the UK, so there will often be a charge or fee for treatment.

NO – You should always take out travel insurance as well as having the EHIC or GHIC. Martin Lewis travel insurance guides also recommend that you should always have travel insurance as well as either of these cards.

Travel insurance covers over EHIC and GHIC:

  • Lost or stolen property
  • Cancellations and curtailment
  • Personal liability
  • Holiday disruption and delays
  • Repatriation back to the UK
  • Sports injuries and accident liability

You might wonder whether it’s actually worth getting a card if you’ve travel insurance, and that’s a good question. The only benefit of the EHIC or GHIC if you’ve got travel insurance is that it might mean that you don’t have to pay any excess for medical claims.

The older style EHIC is no longer available after the 1st January 2021 and you would automatically receive a GHIC in its place. The GHIC is free and can be obtained via the NHS website (see below).

  • GHIC application
  • GHIC guides

Note: There are websites that claim to offer GHIC for a fee (usually £30-40) which should be avoided as recommended quite rightly on the Martin Lewis travel insurance guides.

6) How many times do I need to travel overseas to consider annual travel insurance to make it worthwhile and cost-effective?

As a general rule of thumb from the advice in the Martin Lewis travel insurance guides, it is suggested that 2 or more trips in a 12 month period is worth considering annual cover. As most travel insurance providers will recommend, annual travel insurance is more cost-effective and easier than buying two or more individual policies.

There are many other considerations when buying annual travel insurance, such as:

  • Make sure that it covers all of your destinations
  • If you’re taking part in sports or activities then make sure that they are included and covered
  • Longer trips might not be covered so check limits on travel times
  • Short holidays or weekend breaks might be cheaper to cover individually
  • Cruise holidays may not be covered on an annual policy (optional add-on usually)

You might also have a limit on your annual travel insurance policy for the maximum amount of time you are allowed to travel overseas in a year. Some limits might be as low as 2 weeks or can go up to as high as 3 months in some cases, depending on your insurance provider.

People looking for specialist travel insurance policies such as working abroad, backpacking, travelling for long periods, or gap years. There are specific policies and providers that are ideal for these types of travel.

7) Do you already have travel insurance with your bank account or credit card company and is that enough?

It’s fairly common in recent times for bank or credit card customers to get travel insurance with certain account types. If you’re not sure whether any of your accounts have this benefit then you should definitely check, because you might already have travel insurance.

One of the big points that isn’t really mentioned in the Martin Lewis travel insurance guide is that these policies can have exclusions, and might not be the level of cover that you are looking for, such as:

  • Extreme Sports (e.g. winter sports, sailing, diving etc.)
  • USA and Canada
  • Dangerous destinations

Martin Lewis travel insurance guides also points out that there is another benefit that is offered on some credit cards, which is called ‘travel accident insurance’. This is another type of cover completely that covers accidents when travelling, but it isn’t offered much with more modern card facilities.

8) Get winter sports cover for skiing and snowboarding holidays.

This is a subject that we know a lot about being a lifelong skier and winter sports fanatic, so we’ve had lots of experience in this area. Lots of travel insurance policies offer winter sports cover either as a separate policy or can be added as a benefit.

People who take part in winter sports will be aware of the risks involved as well as the other issues, such as loss or theft of equipment.

Main risks for winter sports and activities:

  • Accidents and injuries can be a common issue for people who take part in winter sports, and that can be for any level of experience. Some of the most common injuries can be things like broken bones and head injuries. If you need treatment in the mountains and especially if you need to be rescued off the mountain by helicopter.
  • Theft, loss and damage of ski equipment is also common when in the mountains and especially in the past 10 years, where theft has unfortunately become part of winter holiday risks. Ski equipment can be extremely expensive to replace, even if it is rented from a local ski shop. Replacing ski equipment can more than double the cost of your already costly ski holiday.
  • Public liability insurance (e.g. injuring another person in an accident or damaging another person’s equipment) can also be vital cover because accidents can happen and it might not be your fault at all. The mountains can be a very dangerous place and especially in adverse weather conditions, so an unintentional or unavoidable accident might happen.
  • Adverse weather conditions can also cause major disruptions or mean that your holiday might be significantly impacted. Some winter sports travel insurance policies will cover you for mountain closures due to severe weather problems.

Note : as it has been pointed out by Martin Lewis, most winter sports travel insurance policies won’t cover you for skiing or snowboarding off-piste (unless you are accompanied by a qualified guide).

9) Will I need specialist travel insurance if I am going on a cruise?

The number of people taking cruise holidays dramatically fell during COVID, the overall figure dropped to under the 5 million in 2021. Globally, these figures have partially recovered to around 20 million cruise holiday travellers in 2022.

One of the common mistakes that people make with cruise holidays, is assuming that their travel insurance covers them for this type of trip. Unfortunately, most traditional travel insurance policies don’t fully cover cruise holidays as standard. You might be lucky and get some cover on your standard travel insurance policy but some critical elements will usually be missing, such as:

  • Illness (confined to cabin) e.g. virus or outbreak of diseases
  • Excursions that were not used or unavailable
  • Change to your cruise schedule
  • Missing the ship departure

All of these can be covered with a standard travel insurance policy add on benefit, and this is usually not too expensive. There are also specialist travel insurance policies and providers that specifically tailor their cover for cruise holidays.

Note : For a specific cruise holiday travel insurance policy quote you can get a quote online CLICK HERE .

10) How does cancellation cover work and how do I make a claim if I’m having problems with my tour operator or airline?

Most traditional and standard travel insurance policies will cover you for cancellation and curtailment of your holiday for a number of reasons. However, even if you have the highest level of cover from the very best travel insurance provider, you’ll still have to follow a certain procedure to make a claim for cancellations.

One of the biggest potential issues with climbing for cancellation on a travel insurance policy, is the clause about ‘recoverable costs’. This means that your travel insurance policy will only cover you for costs that cannot be recovered from your tour operator or airline first.

As it recommends on the Martin Lewis travel insurance guide, you’ll need to speak to your tour operator and airline first to see what compensation they would offer or what costs they would reimburse. This is a fairly normal procedure with any travel plans that are cancelled or changed, and simply means that you would need to provide proof or evidence that you followed the correct procedure.

A standard ‘recoverable costs’ clause would usually look like this:

In the event of cancellation of your holiday or travel you should follow some simple steps before you make a claim.

  • First you should contact your tour operator to find out what their refund policy is, and any potential compensation they will provide (including credit notes and vouchers)
  • Any trips that have been booked by using a credit card or debit card, you should firstly contact the card provider to find out what cover they offer, and any compensation they might provide.

We are unable to process a claim without following these steps first and firstly finding out what compensation might be available. Once you’ve completed these steps please contact your claims department for us to process your claim.

  • How to make a complaint about travel insurance

If you have a complaint about your travel insurance policy or if you’re not happy with the outcome of a claim, then you can raise a complaint with the Financial Ombudsmen Service (FOS).

All travel insurance policies are covered by the same regulators and you will automatically have a level of protection built in. You should firstly raise your complaint with your travel insurance provider, and then you can escalate your complaint to the FOS if you’re unhappy with the outcome.

Common travel insurance complaints:

  • Unclear terms and conditions (hidden small print)
  • Unpaid or pay out shortfalls on claims
  • Unfair fees or charges
  • Poor service
  • Exclusions not explained properly

Financial Ombudsman Service Logo

Making a complaint to the Financial Ombudsman Service

The Financial Ombudsman Service (FOS) is an impartial and free service for financial services customers in the UK. This service can be used to settle any disputes between life insurance companies and their customers in the United Kingdom. If they feel that you have suffered any financial loss as a result of your life insurance policy, then they may rule for compensation to be awarded.

Telephone – 0800 023 4567 (or 0300 123 9123)

Telephone (outside the UK) – 0207 964 0500

You can also visit ‘ Resolver ’ which is a free to use website for people who wish to make complaints to financial services companies.

  • How to make a claim on a travel insurance policy

Travel insurance is there to protect you and your family, so you shouldn’t feel bad if you need to claim on it. Often, people are put off claiming on their travel insurance because of unclear wording, complicated claims processes, high excesses, or just can’t be bothered with the hassle.

There are several simple steps that you should follow if you need to make a claim on your travel insurance policy.

  • Submit your claim form and contact your insurance provider as soon as you can

Submit your claim form and contact your insurance provider as soon as you can to avoid any unnecessary questions or potential issues. If you fail to notify your insurance company of your claim in a certain timeframe (usually 1 or 2 weeks), then you might risk missing the claim window that is allowed under your policy terms and conditions, this includes any police reports and crime reference numbers.

  • Get a crime reference number (CRN) from the local police

Get a crime reference number (CRN) from the local police for any theft or damage to possessions. This can be a painful process and might seem like a waste of your time, especially if you’re on holiday and you want to make the most of your time abroad. Submitting an incident report to the police can be the difference between a valid and an invalid claim on your travel insurance policy. Often this needs to be done within 24 or 48 hours of the incident happening.

  • Speak to your insurer and get them to authorise treatment before you have it

Speak to your insurer and get them to authorise treatment before you have it which can be extremely difficult, but can make a huge difference. Most travel insurance policies will require that you contact them before you receive treatment to make sure that it is in an approved facility or hospital and that the procedure is valid. This can be difficult as well, especially if you are in significant pain or discomfort.

  • Keep a log of costs and receipts

Keep a log of costs and receipts for any payments to make sure that you have a full audit trail of anything you have paid for. Most travel insurance policies will want proof or evidence for any costs that you have incurred that you are claiming for. These can include hotel costs, taxis, medications or medical treatments.

You also have the option to make a complaint to your insurance provider and escalate your complaint to the FOS (see above), if you feel that you are being treated unfairly.

Martin Lewis provides lots of guidance for holidaymakers who are searching for the best deals on their travel insurance. One of the biggest recommendations from Martin Lewis travel insurance advice is ‘ASAB’ (As Soon As you Book), which basically translates to suggesting that you should buy your travel insurance as soon as you’ve booked your holiday.

In an interview on This Morning talking to Martin Lewis about travel insurance, he claims that he is constantly being asked by consumers, “what can I do if I’ve been diagnosed with a medical problem and I can’t go on holiday because my travel company won’t give me a refund?”. According to Martin Lewis travel insurance recommendations, 50% of the value of your travel insurance cover is before you are due to travel.

Top reasons for holiday cancellations before travelling:

  • Sickness or illness
  • Accidents causing an injury
  • Emergency at home
  • Family emergency
  • Work commitments

Martin Lewis Travel Insurance - iam|INSURED

Almost all financial experts such as Martin Lewis and citizensadvice.org.uk, strongly recommend that you take out a travel insurance policy and that you do it quickly. The financial and emotional impact of not having travel insurance while overseas can be catastrophic if you require medical treatment or if you are victim of a crime.

The cost of travel insurance is generally affordable for most holidaymakers and you should factor this in to the cost of your holiday. Risking not having travel insurance and then having a medical emergency when you are overseas, especially in certain destinations, can cost you thousands.

Most travel insurance policies will provide the same core elements such as medical emergencies, repatriation, legal expenses, loss, theft or damage to personal belongings, and cancellation or curtailment of your trip. The types and levels of cover can vary dramatically from one policy to another so you should make sure that you’re getting the cover that you want and that you need.

Also, some travel insurance policies won’t cover you for certain destinations, activities or types of holidays, such as:

  • Cruise holidays
  • Winter sports
  • Worldwide travel

Note: Travel insurance will generally exclude any accident or injury that has happened whilst under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

According to one of the UK’s top travel insurance providers, Staysure clearly states that ‘you must declare ALL pre-existing medical conditions when your take out a travel insurance policy’. Witholding any information about your health or medical history could expose you to the risks of rendering your cover invalid and therefore class any claims as ‘null and void’.

Any of the following pre-existing conditions must always be disclosed on your travel insurance application:

  • Cardiovascular conditions (e.g. blood pressure, cholesterol, heart disease etc.)
  • Any Stroke or Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA)

You should also let your travel insurance provider know about any of the following medical investigations, tests or treatments in the past two years:

  • Symptoms (whether or not you have consulted a doctor)
  • Medication or treatments
  • Scans or investigations
  • Medical appointments and check-ups

The Simple Guide to Buying Travel Insurance When You're Over 65

two senior travelers

How can I find affordable travel insurance when I’m over 65?

You might experience sticker shock when buying travel insurance as a senior. That’s because the price of insurance is based on statistical risk, and older travelers, as a group, are at a higher risk of health problems.

The price of travel insurance is also based on trip cost. So if you’re planning an expensive trip, and if you’re buying insurance for a spouse or travel companion as well, you might conclude that travel insurance is just too expensive. Don’t! Here are a few ideas for saving money on travel insurance when you’re 65+.

  • Consider an annual travel insurance plan. Here’s a little-known travel secret: When you’re buying annual insurance, age does not affect the cost. It’s the same price whether you’re 25 or 75 years old, and it covers all your trips in a 365-day span! That’s why an AllTrips plan may be the best travel insurance plan for senior travelers who intend to take two or more trips in the next 12 months. There’s just one thing to keep in mind: AllTrips plans’ trip cancellation and trip interruption benefit limits are per insured, per year . So if your limit is $3,000, and you file a trip cancellation claim for $2,500, you’ll only be covered up to $500 for the rest of your plan’s duration. The AllTrips Premier plan offers tiered levels of trip cancellation/interruption, so you can opt for a higher plan maximum.
  • If you’re traveling in the U.S., skip emergency medical. Emergency medical benefits are most valuable when you’re overseas, where Medicare doesn’t cover you. So if you’re planning a domestic trip, you can save a lot of money by purchasing OneTrip Cancellation Plus . This plan only includes trip cancellation, trip interruption and travel delay.
  • Grandchildren can be covered for free. Traveling overseas with grandkids? You can save a lot of money with OneTrip Prime or OneTrip Premier . Both plans offer substantial benefits and cover children 17 and under for free when they’re traveling with a parent or a grandparent. These two plans also include a pretty amazing perk called SmartBenefits® . With SmartBenefits, you can get paid $100 per insured person, per day for a covered travel or baggage delay. You don’t even need to provide receipts—just proof of the delay.
  • Remember: It’s better to have lower-limit travel insurance than none at all. If you’re having a hard time finding an affordable travel insurance plan for 65+ travelers, consider one with lower coverage limits. OneTrip Basic includes all the key benefits—emergency medical, trip cancellation, travel delay and more—and is economically priced.

Discover why every year, over 70 million Americans—including millions of 65+ travelers—trust Allianz Travel Insurance to protect their biggest adventures. Get a quote and buy a plan, so you can travel with confidence.

Martin Lewis talks specialist Travel Insurance

Martin Lewis: Choose specialist travel insurance to get the price down: Panoramic of Santorini

“You have a pre-existing condition… You’ll be looking at some form of specialist insurance policy to get the price down,  places like AllClear Travel …”  – Martin Lewis (Founder of Money Saving Expert)

How you can save money and travel with peace of mind

It was great to be a suggested Travel Insurance provider on The Martin Lewis Money Show.

Leading financial expert, Martin Lewis raised a lot of valid points about how you can make sure you get the right travel insurance cover, at the right price.

Basic travel insurance – like the policies of some bank accounts – often  provide no cover for pre-existing medical conditions.  Or the premium greatly increases once conditions are included.

On the other hand, specialist Travel Insurance providers have the expertise to offer the right cover at a sensible price.

ABTA recently revealed that  40% of British holidaymakers  went abroad in 2017 with the wrong cover. This led to a staggering  9.9 million travellers  being at risk of having their claim turned down last year! And if you need any more convincing about having specialist cover, consider these claim statistics:

  • An air ambulance from the USA cost between  £80,000 – £100,000
  • An insect bite cost one traveller a £136,000 bill
  • Travel insurers pay out more than £1,000,000 every single day

Not got around to buying your travel insurance yet?

If you already realise the importance of travel insurance, but you just haven’t got round to buying it yet, have another listen to Martin Lewis:

“If you have booked your holiday, but don’t have travel insurance, do it tonight, otherwise you’re running a risk. Don’t leave it, that’s pointless.”

If you want your travel insurance to cover you for cancellation, have your policy in place  as soon as you book your holiday .   This important to get full protection, and for your own peace of mind. Read on for the reasons why…

To cover your pre-existing medical conditions:

If you have a  pre-existing medical condition , it can be vital that your travel insurance includes cancellation cover. If you have a last-minute medical emergency, you won’t want to lose out on the money you’ve spent if you can’t travel. Provided you declare all your medical conditions at the time you take out your policy, you should be able to recover your costs and re-book your holiday for when the doctor declares you well enough to travel.

To cover more than the GHIC

In the show, Martin also talks about the GHIC (then EHIC). He explains that Travel Insurance often includes cover for repatriation and cancellation (as well as lost or stolen baggage) – all of which you don’t get with a GHIC.

You can use the following checklist to make sure your Travel Insurance cover is comprehensive:

  • Cancellation:  if you need to cancel your holiday before go
  • Medical expenses : for illness and accidents when you are abroad
  • Personal accident : for death or permanent disablement
  • Curtailment : when needed to cut your holiday short
  • Lost documents : cover for passports, tickets etc
  • Possessions & baggage : for lost and stolen bags including contents
  • Personal liability : when an accident caused by you affects a third party

So don’t take the risk – take out comprehensive travel insurance as soon as you’ve booked your holiday.

Which means all that’s left to do is enjoy your trip! And should anything happen..  your specialist insurance will take care of you 24/7  – wherever you are.

We hope to help you travel with peace of mind soon!

What is Martin Lewis travel insurance advice?

What is Martin Lewis travel insurance advice? main image

Martin Lewis’ advice on travel insurance includes information on when and how to insure your holiday. In addition to providing general information on what to look out for when reviewing travel insurance policies, Martin Lewis also advises on travel insurance for the over 70s and cruise travel insurance too.

Who is the Money Saving Expert’s Martin Lewis?

Martin Lewis OBE is a journalist, TV & radio presenter, campaigner and peoples champion for consumer rights. Famous for saving people money, Lewis is renowned for challenging unfair practices by industry giants like the banks and energy companies.

Having founded the Money Saving Expert website in 2003, Martin Lewis is now the UK’s most googled British man.

What are Martin Lewis’ travel insurance top tips?

Money Saving Expert’s top travel insurance tips guide you through all aspects of holiday insurance. From booking your cover through to making a claim, Martin Lewis and his money saving team explain:

  • When to book your holiday insurance
  • What is covered
  • Pre-existing conditions
  • Annual vs single trip travel insurance
  • Cruise travel insurance
  • Over 70s travel insurance
  • The impacts of Brexit and coronavirus

Don’t wait to buy travel insurance

Many people wait until just before they travel to buy holiday insurance however Martin Lewis warns against this. Money Saving Expert advises to book your travel insurance as soon as you book your holiday, so you are covered for events leading to cancelation before you travel.

Make sure your holiday insurance suits your requirements

This section of the Money Saving Expert travel insurance guide explains what could be covered in your insurance including:

  • Medical cover – the cost of being treated abroad and repatriation fees
  • Cancellation cover – if you can’t go on holiday because of redundancy, illness or jury service
  • Baggage and personal belongings – in the event your belongings are lost, stolen or damaged
  • Personal liability – protecting others against accidents you cause whilst on holiday
  • Delays – if your flight has been delayed over a specified number of hours

The amount of cover you get and the excess you’re willing to pay will vary from policy to policy so it’s important to read the terms and conditions carefully.

The guide also covers what isn’t covered by holiday insurance including pre-existing medical conditions, alcohol related injuries, dangerous sporting activities, belongings left unattended, travel to dangerous countries and being refused entry to the country you are visiting.

Finally, this section highlights the difference between european and worldwide travel insurance and warns against being duped into buying upgraded travel insurance if you don’t need it.

Be honest about pre-existing conditions

As with any type of insurance, it’s important to be honest with your insurer as withholding information may invalidate your policy. Martin Lewis therefore advises when arranging holiday insurance to always disclose any pre-existing medical conditions you have.

Compare annual vs single trip travel insurance

You may think single trip travel insurance may be cheaper however if you think you are going to travel more than once in the year, annual travel insurance may be better.

Check if your bank provides travel insurance

As many packaged bank accounts provide travel insurance as part of the service, you may find you are already covered. Therefore, Martin Lewis’ advice is to check before you buy.

What else does the Money Saving Expert say about travel insurance?

In addition to buying the right travel insurance to suit your needs and being honest when you apply, Martin Lewis and the Money Saving Expert team provide information on the following hot topics:

Martin Lewis on travel insurance after Brexit

Brexit’s impact on Travel insurance and what happens after the 31st December 2020 is still unknown. Lewis states that currently it looks as though there shouldn’t be disruption to transportation or change to flight delay compensation rules however you may have to pay a £6 visa waiver for EU holidays.

In this state of influx, if you’re planning a holiday after Brexit, it’s important to read the terms and conditions of a travel insurance policy before buying it.

Also remember that although the future of the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) is unknown, you can still use it until the end of this year.

Martin Lewis on cruise travel insurance

Cruise travel insurance is worth considering if you’re heading to the seas. Regular holiday insurance will cover medical fees and loss or damage to your belongings however upgrading to cruise travel insurance ensures you’re also covered for missed departures, changes in itinerary, unused excursions, or cabin confinement due to virus’.

Martin Lewis on travel insurance for the over 70s

Martin Lewis’ travel advice to over 65 and 70 year olds is similar to that for younger travelers. Honesty where pre-existing medical conditions are concerned  is a must. This may mean you need to get specialist travel cover but at least you know your holiday insurance will be valid.

In addition, Money Saving Expert warns older travelers holidaying with family to compare group and individual holiday insurance. Group travel insurance covers several people under one policy which can save money. However, as the cost of group insurance is usually based on the oldest traveler, separate cover may be cheaper.

Martin Lewis on travel money

Martin Lewis provides information and tips on getting the best travel money deals. You can also compare exchange rates with their travel money comparison tool TravelMoneyMax . Lewis advises that the ‘right’ specialist card can be best when chosen wisely but to be aware of credit card or debit card charges.

Money Saving Expert also warn against buying travel money at airports as the exchange rates are some of the worst you can get.

Martin Lewis on Coronavirus travel rights

Coronavirus has brought most of the world to a standstill where travel is concerned. Flights, holidays and events have been cancelled and borders for many countries closed, with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) warning against all non-essential travel.

The situation is changing constantly so Martin Lewis’ best advice for travel during the coronavirus pandemic is to check with the FCO.

Does the Money Saving Expert offer travel insurance?

Money Saving Expert offer travel insurance through several different companies, including insurance providers and comparison websites. These include but are not limited to Coverwise, MoneySupermarket, Confused, Gocompare and Compare the Market.

Using online comparison services like Over50choices travel insurance comparison tool gives you the opportunity to check prices with the UKs leading insurers. But in addition to checking the price, as Martin Lewis warns, it’s also essential to check the terms and conditions too.

Martin Lewis urges holidaymakers to get travel insurance as soon as trip is booked

Martin Lewis has issued an urgent travel insurance warning for anyone planning a trip away.

The MoneySavingExpert.com founder has given advice on travel insurance during his latest Martin Lewis Money Show Live broadcast last night on ITV . He urged travellers to take out insurance as soon as a holiday is booked - and not to delay.

The Mirror reports Martin told his viewers : "You must get your travel insurance ASAB - as soon as you book. If you've already booked and you don't have it - now. The reason for that is simple." Martin then heard from a viewer called Cocoa, who explained she was advised not to travel due to a high risk pregnancy. The holiday she booked had cost £5,000 and she didn't have travel insurance.

In a message read out on the show, she said: “I was planning a holiday but was then advised that I was not safe to fly due to high risk pregnancy. The holiday was already paid for but I hadn’t taken out travel insurance. I was told that I’ve lost the £5,000 that I had paid for the holiday.”

Martin then added: "Now let me tell you every year I get people who have been diagnosed with cancer and are having chemotherapy or terminal cancer, I've had people who've been paralysed, and they get in touch with me and they say 'I can't go on my holiday, what do I do?

"And they say, I don't have travel insurance, can I cancel? Well look, unless you've got flexible booking, I'm going to say something that sounds very trite but I just want you to understand. You can't expect the hotel or the flight company to give you your money back.

"If you bought a tennis racket and you broke your arm you can't say the tennis racquet is faulty. The tennis racquet is still working. The flight is still available, the hotel is still available, they're not going to give you your money back, that's why we have travel insurance, to cover us not just for when we're on holiday but in case something happens that stops us going on holiday. Otherwise you get stuck like that. Please, ASAB."

Use comparison website such as Compare the Market or MoneySuperMarket to check the latest prices for travel insurance. You'll need to enter details about yourself, such as your age, as well as information about your trip, including where you're going and for how long. Depending on the type of cover you've got, you may be able to claim on anything from medical expenses to your luggage going missing.

Iran threatens Israel with ‘severe and painful’ response

Martin lewis' team says people over 40 can turn £800 into £5,500 for retirement.

Martin Lewis's MoneySavingExpert.com team has highlighted a savvy tip for individuals aged 40 to 70, detailing how they can significantly increase their retirement funds by converting £800 into over £5,500.

The strategy involves purchasing additional National Insurance (NI) years to enhance one's state pension, a valuable piece of advice featured in the MSE weekly newsletter. The newsletter outlined that securing the full state pension requires 35 years' worth of qualifying National Insurance Contributions. For those who reached state pension age before April 6, 2016, the full new state pension is currently valued at £221.20 per week.

Should you fall short of the 35-year threshold, your pension will be reduced accordingly. The MSE experts noted that while most UK residents accrue their National Insurance Credits during their employment years, some may find gaps in their record due to periods spent out of work.

READ MORE: Hope for historic Tees shipyard as owners launch talks with potential new occupants

For no cost, you can verify whether your record has any gaps and if so, you have the opportunity to purchase missing years dating back to 2006. However, time is of the essence as the deadline to address these gaps is April 2025.

The MSE newsletter advised: "AGED 40 TO 73 AND NOT DUE A FULL STATE PENSION? Boost it by turning £800 into £5,500+ (free for some). To get the full state pension, you'll need 35ish (only 'ish', as it can be more for some) complete NI years - most get these through working or claiming benefits."

"If you've gaps in your NI record, check if you can fill them for free. If not, you can buy missing years from 2006 to 2016, which can be incredibly lucrative, though you'll need to do it before 5 April 2025. Don't leave it till then though, as it's not quick. We've full help on who should do this in boost NI years."

The MSE website describes the tip as a "potentially unbeatable opportunity" for people aged 40 to 73, with some Brits boosting their state pension by more than £50,000. The MSE team outlined how a single voluntary National Insurance year costs about £800 but could add an extra £275 each year to your state pension.

Under previous calculations provided by Martin Lewis, if a man who has turned 66 survives another 19 years and a woman lives for 21 additional years, then for every £800 expended, a man might anticipate receiving £5,300 more in pension while a woman could receive an additional £5,800. The founder of the MSE website has emphasised that these figures are rough estimates as the rules regarding the state pension are highly intricate, and the amounts depend on your individual circumstances.

You might be able to fill your National Insurance gaps for free, without the need to buy any credits. For instance, if you were claiming statutory sick pay and not earning enough for a qualifying year, you could be entitled to National Insurance credits.

Those on benefits like Jobseeker's Allowance and Employment and Support Allowance may also qualify for these credits.

Before making any purchases, it's always advisable to check if you can fill your record for free. More examples of how you might be eligible for NI credits can be found on the GOV.UK website.

Martin Lewis warns drivers over ‘ridiculous’ car insurance rule firms use to charge double

author image

Martin Lewis

Martin Lewis has issued a warning to drivers about a ‘ridiculous rule’ which could see the price of their car insurance double.

The Money Saving Expert explained that insurance firms determine renewal price based on ‘actuarial risk’ – and warns that the longer you leave it to renew, the higher your premium could become.

Martin Lewis found that some companies were charging up to 100% more for drivers who left their renewal to the last minute.

He told ITV ’s Tonight programme: ‘It seems absolutely ridiculous but insurance pricing is all about actuarial risk.

‘And what their risk shows them is the type of people who get car insurance early are a lower risk so they give them a lower price.

‘You might pay nearly double if you wait until the last minute to get your car insurance.’

To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video

Money Saving Expert analysis of 70 million quotes across a number of comparison sites found the average quote on the day of renewal was £1,198.

Martin Lewis also revealed the perfect time to renew your car insurance – exactly 23 days before your policy expires.

The analysis found drivers could get the same contract for just £694 if they renewed 23 days earlier – saving themselves more than £500.

‘That’s not for your renewal quote, that’s for going onto comparisons to get different quotes,’ he added.

Drivers could save themselves hundreds of pounds by securing a deal just over three weeks before their renewal deadline.

But even if that 23-day mark has already passed, it’s still possible to save large sums by renewing early.

MoneySuperMarket explained: ‘According to our research, car insurance premiums start to go up within two weeks of your current policy ending, and the sharpest rise comes around three days before.

‘So as long as you buy before then you should avoid the big price hike reserved for those who leave it until the last minute.’

Martin Lewis has highlighted a 'absolutely ridiculous' car insurance rule that could see drivers paying double the price on their premiums. The founder of Money Saving Expert pointed out that insurance companies tend to charge motorists more if they leave their renewal until the last minute, as this increases their "actuarial risk".

Securing a new deal weeks before an existing contract ends can indicate that a driver is less rushed and may result in better prices . Shockingly, Martin revealed that some companies were charging up to 100 percent more for those who left it until the very last minute.

Speaking on ITV's Tonight programme , Martin explained: "The perfect time to get car insurance is 23 days before your renewal. That's not for your renewal quote, that's for going onto comparisons to get different quotes.

And what their risk shows them is the type of people who get car insurance early are a lower risk so they give them a lower price. You might pay nearly double if you wait until the last minute to get your car insurance."

Lewis has previously emphasised that motorists could save hundreds of pounds by acting quickly and securing a deal around three weeks before a renewal deadline. Analysis of 70 million quotes across various comparison sites found that the average quote made on the day of renewal was £1,198, reports The Express .

Motorists could bag the same insurance deal for a mere £694 if they act 23 days before their current policy expires, potentially saving a substantial £504a welcome relief for drivers feeling the pinch. Experts at MoneySuperMarket advise that locking in a new policy between 15 and 29 days before the renewal date is usually the most cost-effective strategy.

Hispanic man driving car

Delaying beyond this window is a gamble, yet premiums are typically lower even one or two weeks ahead of renewal compared to last-minute rates. For those who've let the optimal 23-day period slip by, prompt action remains a crucial step to mitigate costs.

The specialists noted: "According to our research, car insurance premiums start to go up within two weeks of your current policy ending, and the sharpest rise comes around three days before. So as long as you buy before then you should avoid the big price hike reserved for those who leave it until the last minute."

The Money Saving Expert website also shared how to get cheaper car insurance. They revealed that insurance prices rose by over 50 per cent in 2023, with the average quote now more than £1,000 a year.

Drivers could save £100s by switching car insurers. They said: "Our advice has always been to never just auto-renew instead combine comparison sites to scour 100s of insurers in minutes." Different insurers have different prices so you should still compare to see how much you could save from switching.

The MSE's Compare+ Car Insurance tool is designed to take the hard work out of finding cheap car insurance online.

Deliveroo has confirmed to Sky News it is adding a "small extended delivery fee" for all users.

The online food delivery company emailed some of its Plus customers yesterday saying the charge will come into force on 1 May.

Deliveroo told the Money team that it was still "committed to offering customers the best value for money, service and selection".

"Over the last year, we dramatically increased the selection that customers see in the app by expanding delivery radii to give customers access to more restaurants and provide greater choice," they said.

"This means that some of our partners are further away so riders need to go the extra mile to deliver these orders.

"We will therefore be introducing a small extended delivery fee for long distance orders which will be discounted for Plus customers."

Plus customers are those who pay a monthly fee to enjoy additional perks.

Currently, Silver Plus customers pay £3.49 a month to get free delivery on orders more than £15 from restaurants and £25 from stores, as well as exclusive offers and rewards.

Gold Plus members pay £7.99 a month for free delivery on orders over £10, the ability to claim back £5 if their order arrives late and access to discounted fees and rewards.

People in search of a little extra cash have been told they could have a small fortune sitting on their bookshelves.

Research by All Top Books, an online bookshop, has revealed how much some early copies of our best loved books could be worth.

Thousands of valuable volumes could be gathering dust on shelves across the country, it said.

Treasure hunters were told to check whether elderly relatives have any unwanted old tomes.

Rare editions of the early works of children's writers such as Roald Dahl and J.K. Rowling can be worth thousands if found in good condition.

The books listed below also sold in their millions, so there is a fighting chance you've got one.

Ten tomes that could fetch a pretty penny are:

  • Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl (1967) - £1,000
  • The Tale of Mrs Tittlemouse by Beatrix Potter (1910) - £1,000
  • Now We Are Six, Winnie The Pooh by A.A. Milne (1927) - £2,000
  • James Bond: On Her Majesty’s Secret Service by Ian Fleming (1963) - £13,000
  • Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austin (1894)  - £2,500
  • Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll (1914) - £2,000
  • Sherlock Holmes: The Hound of the Baskervilles by Arthur Conan Doyle (1902) - £5,000
  • Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone by J.K. Rowling (1997) - £5,000
  • Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets by J.K. Rowling (1998) - £2,000
  • N or M? By Agatha Christie (1941) - £2,000

There is no real prospect of a new record high for the FTSE 100 today.

Stock markets have widely taken fright at the prospect of US interest rates remaining higher for longer, after further evidence of resilience in the world's biggest economy yesterday.

Energy stocks led the FTSE lower at the open - falling 1.3% to 7,862.

Sentiment in London was not improved by data from the ONS that showed UK wage growth remaining stubbornly high.

The Bank of England wants to see the pace come down markedly before relaxing its battle against inflation through an interest rate cut.

LSEG data showed a flurry of bets away from June for the first rate cut and towards August instead.

Across the market more widely, shares in Superdry were 25% down as it confirmed a story by Sky News yesterday that it had launched a restructuring plan that would result in rent reductions for some of its stores.

It also planned an equity raise, which it said would allow it to delist from the London Stock Exchange.

One other piece of market data to flag: the cost of oil.

Brent crude is still sat around the $90 a barrel mark amid the raised tensions in the Middle East.

Market experts have warned the direction will be determined by Israel's response to Iran's drone and missile attack on Israeli soil on Saturday night.

The Office for National Statistics has just released its latest data on wage growth - a factor in the sights of the Bank of England as it considers when to start cutting interest rates.

Wages excluding bonuses grew by 6% in the three months to the end of February, compared with the same period a year ago.

A Reuters poll of economists had predicted wage growth would slow to 5.8% from 6.1% in November to January.

The figures, while welcome on the face of it for struggling households, will make for worrying reading at the Bank of England, which is assessing the timing for a long-awaited interest rate cut in its battle against inflation.

Other jobs figures released by the ONS showed unemployment in February rose to 4.2% from 3.9%, and the number of vacancies in January to March was 916,000, a fall of 13,000 on the previous three months.

Liz McKeown, director of economic statistics at the ONS, said: "Recent trends of falling vacancy numbers and slowing earnings growth have continued this month albeit at a reduced pace.

"But with the rate of inflation also slowing, real earnings growth has increased and is now at its highest rate in nearly two and a half years."

A street in London (perhaps unsurprisingly) has been named the most expensive in the country.

Nestled near Buckingham Palace and the Houses of Parliament, houses along Buckingham Gate come with an average price tag at £9,633,333, according to Rightmove.

After Buckingham Gate, the next highest average asking price was found in Vicarage Gate in Holland Park in west London, at £6,332,000.

Outside London, Old Avenue in Weybridge, Surrey, had the highest average asking price for properties so far this year, at £2,633,333.

When it comes to renting, Albion Street in Bayswater, central London, was found to be the most expensive at £20,857 a month.

This was followed by Pavilion Road in Knightsbridge, central London, where renters spend around £15,251 a month for a new let.

Outside the capital, London Road in Ascot, Berkshire, was found to have the highest rent price at £6,831 a month.

Basically, a credit score is a three-digit number that indicates how reliable you are at borrowing and repaying money.

It is worked out by collecting information about you from public records, lenders and other service providers.

The scores are based on the amount you have borrowed, your repayment history and other information such as your job and age.

Credit scores can influence your ability to access loans and credit, as well as the terms you are offered if your application is successful.

It can also be a factor if you want to buy a car on finance or when buying a new smartphone through a pay-monthly contract.

A good score can also see you have access to the lowest interest rates available on mortgages and it can affect how much you pay for your security deposit on a rental house.

What is a good credit score?

Your credit worthiness is calculated using a points system.

In the UK, there are three main credit reference agencies - Experian, Equifax and TransUnion - and they each have their own system of rating your credit worthiness.

Experian, which gives scores out of 999, has said a credit score of 700 or above is generally considered good and a score of 800 or above is considered to be excellent.

Equifax, which gives you a score out of 1,000, considers scores between 740 to 799 to be very good; and 800 up are considered excellent.

TransUnion considers a good credit score to be between 721-780 while 781 onwards is excellent.

How can you improve it?

This may seem an obvious one, but keeping up with repayments is a good way to show lenders you are sensible with money and are likely to pay back what you borrow on time, an Equifax spokesperson told the Money blog.

The credit reference agency said it is also best to avoid staying close to or exceeding your credit limit as this can indicate that you're experiencing financial difficulties.

Rajan Lakhani, money expert at the money app Plum, said registering on the electoral roll is also an easy way - and only takes minutes - to improve your score as it gives lenders confidence that they know where you are based.

He also said getting a whole credit report is another way to keep an eye on any errors or even fraud.

"A lot of people will just look at the score but it's worth getting the full report," he said.

"Even if there is something that has occurred but there were special circumstances around it, you can get a notice of correction and it explains that."

Mark Mcelvanney, client services director at IE Hub, said "consistency" was important too.

"Your credit scores are built up of lots of difference data sources so every time you make an application for a loan, credit card or any form of credit you enter information into that application," he said.

"Making sure the application information is consistent is important, even down to your job title, because if they look different in each of those applications, the ultimate worthiness will be impacted and there could be suggestions of fraud or instability."

And it is also worth "de-linking mortgages" after splitting with a partner, he added.

"If their credit file starts to suffer that can have a negative impact on you," he said.

Other tips from Equifax...

Take control of your finances

Having combined finances - like a joint mortgage or credit card -  could negatively affect your ability to access credit, if the other person's credit history is poor.

Know the difference between hard and soft credit searches

When you apply for credit, it leaves a "footprint" on your credit report and making too many applications in a short space of time can have a negative impact on your score.

Instead, space out and limit the number of applications you make.

Check your credit report regularly

Despite popular myths, checking your credit report regularly does not negatively impact your credit score.

By Bhvishya Patel, Money team

Over four days this week, we're speaking to some of Britain's struggling unpaid carers, hearing at times heart-breaking accounts of their physical, emotional and financial struggles.

Today, a daughter who cares for her mother with motor neurone disease tells us the financial support she receives "is not even close to enough" and left her needing to use her savings as a last resort.

Fiona Jermaine, 39, from Grimsby, whose mother Helen, 74, was diagnosed in 2012, worked full-time until the pandemic but after she was furloughed and her mother's condition worsened she decided against returning.

"Mentally it's isolating - you feel lonely. And as much as you do, you always feel guilty and feel you are not doing enough." Fiona Jermaine

While Fiona has care agency staff come to the house to help, she is the main carer for her mother.

"Everything around the house is down to me - the washing, cleaning, shopping, cooking," Fiona says.

"I'm very much tied to the house."

Physically it has "massively" taken a toll on her and mentally it is "isolating".

"I think because you're busy, you ignore how you are feeling. As daft as it sounds, you don't really stop until you're actually really, really poorly. So you kind of ignore a lot," she says.

"Mentally it's isolating - you feel lonely. And as much as you do, you always feel guilty and feel you are not doing enough."

Heating on 24/7

With her mother's care falling under the NHS continuing healthcare support, her carers are funded by the health service.

The funding, which is separate to the £76.75-a-week carer's allowance, is provided for those assessed as having a "primary health need" and pays for the care agency, with Fiona's mother allocated £700 a week.

But with "sky-high" gas and electricity bills in the cost of living crisis, Fiona says she is sometimes left with no option but to dip into her savings.

"Mum feels the cold so the heating is on 24/7 and she has so many pieces of medical equipment on and I can't turn them off," Fiona says.

"You don't get any help with that whatsoever."

In addition to carer's allowance, Fiona gets universal credit but she says she is not able to receive the maximum £368.74 she could be entitled to due to receiving a carer's benefit. She instead receives £222.02 a month.

She says the financial help she gets from the carer's allowance is "not even close" to enough.

"It's supposed to be based on the carer working 35 hours a week - so myself doing 35 hours of care. I challenge you to find a carer that only does that. It's really not a lot," she says.

"People tell me I'm doing a really good job, but you never feel like that, you always feel like you should do more - it's tiring.

"It feels like you can never switch off. Even if you do go out for an hour, you are still listening to your phone."

'People do not do only 35 hours'

With no other avenues of income, her financial struggles have left Fiona needing to use her savings as a last resort. Returning to work is a "possibility" but she is uncertain about how that would work.

"When the gas and electricity bills went really high, going into my savings was the only way I could pay it," she says.

"And then Mum also needed a new wheelchair accessible vehicle and the upfront payment for that was about £4,500. I had no choice, I had to pay it.

"With returning to work, it could possibly happen, but more likely it'll be when Mum's no longer with us - I lean more towards that.

"Obviously if finances meant that I had to, I would but I can't honestly tell you how I would make that work."

With carers facing unprecedented pressure on their finances, Fiona says domiciliary home care needs "vast amounts of money thrown at it" and the government needed to be a "bit more realistic" with carer's allowance.

"The 35 hours figure for care is just ridiculous. People do not do 35 hours. I don't know where they plucked that arbitrary figure from but it is ridiculous so that needs to be looked at," she says.

"And then I think they need to make it so it's not tied into your other benefits.

"There is a threshold, so you can only do so many hours or earn so much and then you lose your universal credit. It's so difficult to find a job that fits around the care side.

"They've made out that they want everyone to go back to work. Well, make it a bit easier for us to go back to work."

A government spokesperson said: "Unpaid carers play a vital role in the lives of their family and friends, which is why from April we're boosting carer's allowance meaning carers receive an extra £1,500 a year compared to 2010.

"Those in low income households may also be eligible for additional financial support such as universal credit."

HMRC has overpaid its own staff millions of pounds over the past 10 years, according to The Telegraph.

In total, £12.6m has been pocketed by employees but only £12.3m has been paid back, leaving a £300,000 shortfall.

The news outlet said some 250 staff were overpaid by more than £1,000 last year.

Some of the overpayments were caused by payroll failing to stop salary payments for people who had left the company, it added.

The revelation comes after the tax office controversially decided to close its helplines for six months.

"With a staff headcount of almost 67,500, we operate at a monthly payroll average accuracy rate of 99.54%, which exceeds the corporate benchmark of 98%," a HMRC spokesperson said.

"Our total pay bill in the 2022/23 financial year was £2.449bn* which means that 0.05% was incorrectly paid that year, and we have recovered over 84% of that.

"We have robust processes in place for the recovery of over and underpayments and all staff are provided with guidance on the importance of checking the payment of their salary."

Dr Martens has filed a lawsuit against online retailer Temu for allegedly infringing its trademarks, according to The Times.

The British bootmaker has alleged that the online retailer paid Google to advertise boots sold on its site when users search keywords including "Dr Martens", it said.

As a result, Temu's lookalike products were placed about Dr Martens' own in search results.

The move is the latest sign of growing hostility between Western retailers and their cheaper Chinese rivals.

Temu told Sky News it was yet to receive the complaint and will review it in due course.

Tesla is cutting 10% of its global workforce in a bid to reduce costs and bolster productivity, it has been reported.

The electric vehicle maker, founded and run by Elon Musk, was yet to comment on a story earlier today by Electrek that it was to axe about 15,000 people.

The tech publication said the cuts were revealed in an internal memo - also seen by the Reuters news agency.

It added that managers had been tasked earlier this year with identifying key personnel.

The company, which had more than 140,000 staff at the end of last year, has been struggling with soft demand for its electric vehicles.

The average UK tenant is spending 30.6% of their salary on rent, data shows.

Many experts believe that a third of your earnings is considered the outer limit for affordability.

But in several areas of the UK, people are spending considerably more, an index created by Canopy has shown.

Tenants in Poole have been found to be struggling most with affordability, with the average renter giving more than 40% of their income to their landlord.

Stirling has also made a surprising inclusion in the top 10 places, with a low average income meaning tenants are spending 37.8% of their wages on rent.

Belfast was found to be the most affordable major city for renters, with people spending just over a quarter of their salary in rent (23.2%), on average.

Here are the 10 places people spend the highest percentage of their income on rent:

Chris Hutchinson, chief executive of Canopy, said the data showed homeowners spend an average of 18% of their income on their mortgage.

"It is sobering to see that one in five tenants are spending the vast majority of their salary on rental payments, and it neatly encapsulates the tricky situation that many tenants with aspirations of homeownership are in," he said.

"Where we could see positive change is towards longer tenancies for those who desire them, fostering greater security for families and communities."
