Tour+Med Travel Insurance Review 2024

Updated: Jan 3, 2024, 3:36pm

Tour+Med has a reputation for being popular amongst snowbirds, and for good reason. While its premiums are competitively priced across all age groups, it’s especially affordable for mature travellers. Tour+Med offers opportunities for savings, including several discounts and your choice of a traditional or hospital-care deductible. What’s more, travellers with pre-existing conditions have more than one option for coverage. However, Tour+Med’s medical coverage is leaner than other plans, with lower payouts and fewer benefits.

  • Affordable premiums for mature travellers
  • Coverage options for pre-existing conditions
  • Several discounts
  • Optional COVID-19 rider
  • Lower payouts than other plans
  • Fewer benefits than other plans
  • No CFAR coverage
  • No online quotes for age 80 or older

Tour+Med has been offering affordable travel insurance since 1996. A privately held company headquartered in Trois-Rivières, Québec, Tour+Med focuses solely on travel insurance and emergency assistance, especially for snowbirds .

Tour+Med is underwritten by LS-Travel Insurance Company, a subsidiary of Humania Assurance Inc.

Here are the key types of travel insurance coverage offered in Tour+Med Travel Insurance plans:

  • Emergency medical insurance: If you get ill or are injured on your trip, travel medical insurance can pay for emergency medical expenses, up to the coverage limits in your plan. These expenses can include doctor and hospital bills, medication and lab work, as well as medical evacuations, repatriation and arranging for a bedside companion if you are hospitalized.
  • Trip cancellation insurance: If you cancel a trip for a reason listed in your travel policy, such as you or your travelling companion becoming ill, weather conditions cause a massive delay or you lose your job, trip cancellation insurance can reimburse you for prepaid, non-refundable costs.
  • Trip interruption or delay insurance: Trip interruption insurance can pay for a last-minute flight home in an emergency and reimburse money that you lose by cutting a trip short due to a covered reason, including non-refundable activities and hotel stays. If your flight is delayed , your insurance can cover the cost of incidentals, such as meals or accommodations, after a specified period of time, such as six, 10 or 12 hours.
  • Baggage insurance: Baggage travel insurance can compensate you up to your policy limits if your luggage is lost or stolen. It will reimburse the depreciated value of your suitcases and what you packed. If your bags are delayed, it can reimburse you for the cost of the necessities you’ll have to buy to tide you over. It also extends to your personal belongings, if they are lost, damaged or stolen.
  • Accidental death or dismemberment. This coverage offers compensation in the event of accidental death or catastrophic injury from an accident during your trip.

Tour+Med Travel Insurance offers three plans for travelling outside of Canada.

Per Trip Plan: This plan provides up to $5 million in coverage in the event of a medical emergency.

Emergency medical treatment includes:

  • Hospital accommodation up to a semi-private room
  • Incidental hospital expenses, such as telephone, parking, TV, up to $100
  • Physician’s fees
  • Private duty nursing, up to $10,000
  • Medical appliances, including the purchase of splints, casts, crutches, canes, slings, trusses or orthopedic corsets, or for the rental or a walker or wheelchair
  • Diagnostic tests and X-rays
  • Prescription drugs, up to 30-day supply after the emergency (subject to a $5 USD copay)
  • Paramedical services, such as care from a chiropractor, physiotherapist or podiatrist, 50% of the cost of services, up to $300
  • Ambulance services and emergency air transportation
  • Emergency dental due to a blow to the face (with exceptions), up to $1,000

Medical benefits also include coverage to bring someone to your bedside, expenses for meals, hotel accommodations and associated expenses if a medical delay prevents you from returning home, repatriation expenses and return of your remains if you die. Tour+Med also offers an Emergency Round-Trip benefit that reimburses you for up to $1,500 for a flight home if a member of your family dies or becomes hospitalized or if your home or business becomes uninhabitable or unusable.

Trip Cancellation/Interruption: This coverage option reimburses you for insured non-refundable travel expenses (such as hotels or prepaid excursions) if you have to cancel, interrupt, or delay your trip due to a covered reason. You must purchase this protection within 15 days of the first non-refundable deposit of your insured trip.

Non-Medical Package: This benefit includes trip cancellation and interruption insurance, coverage for baggage loss, damage and delay, as well as coverage in case of accidental death and dismemberment due to an accident during a flight, on your way to or from a flight, or during your trip.

Plans for Families: Tour+Med offers emergency medical coverage for up to two adults and four children on the same policy for either a single trip or multi-trip annual plan of eight, 15 or 30 days.

We’ve highlighted the key benefits of Tour+Med Insurance for the three single-trip plans to help you identify which coverage is the best fit for you.

The price of a Tour+Med Travel Insurance plan depends on factors such as the cost of your trip, your age, your answers to a medical questionnaire, if required, and the amount of coverage you choose.

Here are some examples of the cost for Tour+Med Travel Insurance single trip plans for healthy travellers based in Ontario assuming a $0 deductible. These quotes do not include the COVID-19 rider.

You can also choose a deductible, or the amount you pay out of pocket before your coverage kicks in, of between $250 and $10,000 to save between 5% and 35% off your premium. The deductible is applied on a per event basis, so if you claim more than once on the same policy, you will have to pay each time.

Tour+Med gives you the choice between a “traditional” deductible and a “hospital-care deductible.”

With a “traditional” deductible, you will be responsible for that amount regardless of where you are treated in a medical emergency.

With a “hospital-care deductible,” which is unique to Tour+Med, you only pay the deductible if you are treated in an emergency room, a hospital or hospital clinic, or if you are transported by land or air ambulance. If you are treated in a regular clinic, you do not need to pay the deductible.

Tour+Med offers a COVID-19 Rider on its travel medical insurance.

A standard medical insurance plan with Tour+Med has a medical exclusion if you travel to a destination for which the Government of Canada has issued a Level 3 (avoid non-essential travel) or Level 4 (avoid all travel) travel advisory before or after your departure. For example, if the government issues a travel advisory due to COVID-19 and you become ill with COVID-19 while on your trip, your medical insurance will not cover any treatment.

However, the COVID-19 Rider gives you the following coverage:

  • Up to $5 million in medical coverage for a COVID-19 emergency, even if a Level 3 or Level 4 travel advisory is in place
  • An automatic extension of your coverage up to 14 days if you test positive for COVID-19 while on your trip and you can not return on your scheduled date

Yes. Tour+Med offers the following discounts:

Early Bird discount: Earn a 5% discount if you purchase your travel medical insurance policy for a trip within a new sales season. The timing of the discount offer varies, but is typically between mid-July and mid-September.

2 Travellers discount: A 5% discount is immediately applied when two people travel together on the same insurance policy. You do not need to be related to be eligible for the discount.

Loyalty discount: A discount of between 2% and 5% is applied depending on the number of consecutive years you have purchased Tour+Med travel insurance.

Combined Protection discount: Earn a 5% discount when you purchase travel medical insurance and a non-medical insurance policy, such as trip cancellation and interruption insurance, at the same time for the same trip. To qualify, you need to have paid your first non-refundable deposit for your trip less than 15 days ago.

25% Deposit option: This option allows you to pay 25% of your premium at the time of purchase and pay the balance up to two weeks before your departure date, allowing you to lock in your rate and apply any early bird discounts. Your premium must be at least $400 and you must use a credit card to pay for your insurance policy.

Yes. You can buy multi-trip annual insurance if you travel more than once a year for multiple individual trips. Tour+Med offers eight, 15 and 30-day annual plans for emergency medical coverage.

Using the example of the couple travelling to Italy for 21 days, here’s how the costs of the annual multi-trip plans compare (without the COVID-19 rider):

The Per Trip Plan 21 days provides coverage for one trip up to 21 days.

The Multi-Trip Annual Plan 8 days + Per Trip Plan 13 days provides coverage for this 21-day trip to Italy and any other trips of up to eight days or less that you make during the year.

The Multi-Trip Annual Plan 15 days + Per Trip Plan 6 days provides coverage for this 21-day trip to Italy and any other trips of up to 15 days or less that you make during the year.

The Multi-Trip Annual Plan 30 days provides coverage for this 21-day trip to Italy and any other trips of up to 30 days or less that you make during the year.

Worldwide emergency travel assistance is available 24/7 from anywhere in the world by calling Tour+Med Assistance toll-free.

When you have a travel emergency, depending on your coverage, the following support may be available:

  • Coordinating your medical treatment and keeping your family informed
  • Helping you to locate a physician, clinic or hospital
  • Confirming your insurance coverage to the hospital or physician
  • Guaranteeing or arranging payment to the hospital or physician wherever possible
  • Arranging transportation of a family member to your bedside, when indicated by circumstances
  • Arranging for your repatriation
  • Help contacting your family, business partners or family physician
  • Facilitating the delivery of urgent messages to family members
  • Helping you find legal counsel in the event of a serious accident

You must contact the Assistance Centre before receiving medical treatment or your benefits may be denied or limited to 70% of eligible expenses to a maximum of $25,000.

In general, a pre-existing condition is defined as any sickness, injury or medical condition that existed before the start of your coverage, whether or not diagnosed by a physician, that you showed signs or symptoms of or received medical attention for.

With a Tour+Med Travel Insurance policy, any pre-existing conditions must be stable and controlled for three months if you’re 69 or younger, or six months if you’re 70 or older.

According to Tour+Med, a medical condition is considered stable and controlled when all of the following are true:

  • There has not been a diagnosis, any new treatment prescribed or recommended, or changes to existing treatment, including a stoppage.
  • There has not been any change to any existing prescribed medication, including an increase, decrease or stoppage to prescribed dosage, or any recommendation or starting of a new prescription (with some exceptions).
  • There has not been any new, more frequent or more severe symptoms.
  • There has not been any hospitalization or referral to a specialist.
  • There has not been any medical exam, investigative testing or test results showing deterioration.
  • There has not been any treatment recommended, planned or not yet completed, nor any outstanding test results.

Tour+Med also offers a Reduced Stability Period option for travellers less than 86 years old with the following coverage:

  • For travellers 69 years old and under: The stability period is reduced from three months to 30 days before departure.
  • For travellers aged 70 to 85 years old: The stability period is reduced from six months to 30 days before departure for a specific condition.

The medical benefit is up to $5 million on the noted conditions.

Alternatively, if you have an unstable medical condition, you can elect to have that condition excluded by Tour+Med’s Optional Exclusion option, if you are between 60 and 85 years of age. This option allows you to exclude the organ or complete system that’s affected by a pre-existing condition in return for a lower premium. For example, if you have asthma that does not meet the “stable and controlled” stipulations, you can choose to have your asthma excluded, which would also exclude the entire respiratory system. That means if you were to get sick with bronchitis while travelling, that too would not be covered by insurance.

In addition to pre-existing condition exclusions, there are a number of scenarios not covered by travel insurance and it’s critical to know what not to do before you make a claim. The following are exclusions to coverages provided by Tour+Med Travel Insurance:

  • Any treatment not authorized by Emergency Assistance or not considered an emergency, including (but not limited to) blood tests, observation, exploratory and/or investigative tests or exams, vaccines, elective treatment, preventative or experimental medication, cosmetic surgery, eye treatment, dermatological care, biopsies, etc.
  • Any treatment that could wait until the policyholder returns home
  • Any further treatment if it’s decided you should be transferred to another hospital or repatriated and you refuse
  • The continued treatment once a medical emergency is deemed over
  • Any treatment, surgery or palliative care not related to an emergency
  • Any medical condition related to symptoms you ignored or did not follow prescribed treatment
  • Any mental, psychiatric, psychological, psychotic or nervous medical condition, including depression, anxiety and insomnia
  • Any costs related to replacing, repairing or adjusting any prosthesis, other than a knee or hip prosthesis
  • Any treatment related to your chronic use or withdrawal from alcohol, drugs or other intoxicants
  • Treatment of any sexually transmitted disease, AIDS or HIV
  • Suicide, attempted suicide or self-inflicted injury
  • Any costs related to prenatal or postnatal care, fertility treatments, abortion, pregnancy, childbirth or complications of either nine weeks before or after your expected due date, any child born on your trip
  • Any accident or medical condition sustained while participating in professional or competitive sports, any race or speed contest, gliding, hang-gliding, rock climbing, mountain climbing with specialized equipment, mountaineering, spelunking, rafting, acrobatic skiing, snowboarding, kitesurfing, bungee jumping, parachuting and other aerial activities and underwater activities using a breathing apparatus (except snorkelling)
  • Any activities requiring you to sign an accident waiver and release of liability form, or any behaviour involving risk
  • Any claim related to civil unrest, war, intentional exposure to a peril, intent to commit or committing a criminal or illegal act, terrorism
  • Any claim related to the reason for a level 3 or level 4 travel advisory (avoid non-essential travel or avoid all travel)
  • Any medical condition occurring during frequent business trips or during a trip for a volunteer activity
  • Any organ retrieval, donation and/or transplant and blood donation

It’s important to read the policy wording to be sure you know what is and is not covered by your insurance as there are additional exclusions depending on the coverage you purchase.

To be eligible for Tour+Med emergency medical travel insurance you must:

  • Be a Canadian permanent resident
  • Be eligible for benefits under your provincial or territorial government health plan (GHIP)
  • Understand or speak either one of Canada’s official languages (English or French)
  • Be age more than three months on the departure date for a single-trip plan, or
  • Be aged between three months and 85 years on the effective date for the annual multi-trip plan

You can file a claim 24/7 by visiting the Tour+Med website where you can download the relevant claims form(s). You can also call a toll-free number for assistance.

You have 90 days after your return home to submit your completed claim form(s) and any required documents, including all original itemized bills.

For a trip cancellation and trip interruption claim, you may be asked to provide:

  • An official contract stimulating the booking, cancellation and interruption conditions along with the corresponding penalties
  • A medical document stating why travel was impossible, the diagnosis and dates of treatment
  • Copy of death certificate
  • Written evidence of the insured risk if cancellation. Interruption or delay is due to any reason other than sickness or injury
  • Original unused tickets and copies of your reservations made with the travel supplier, including the penalties and reimbursements

If you are making a baggage claim, you may need to provide:

  • A brief explanation of the incident leading to the loss, including a police or official report supporting the incident
  • An itemized list detailing the value of all lost or stolen items, together with proof of ownership, including receipts, photos, credit card statements, owners manual, etc.
  • Copy of airline tickets and itinerary confirming departure and return dates
  • Adequate proof of home insurance coverage
  • Any other documents as required

If you are making an accidental death and dismemberment claim, you may need to provide:

  • Copy of flight itinerary and incident report from airline or airport
  • Police report, including any witness statements
  • Coroner’s report
  • Medical or death certificate

Tour+Med Travel Insurance FAQs

Does tour+med travel insurance pay for medical costs upfront.

According to the company, “We have agreements with clinics and hospitals in many different countries, in order to facilitate payment of the medical expenses you could incur. But some establishments could, nonetheless, require that you pay a deposit or the full amount of your consultation or hospitalization. This is one of the many reasons why we ask that you call Emergency Assistance prior to heading anywhere; we will steer you towards the most appropriate establishment, depending on your situation.”

Does Tour+Med Travel Insurance offer coverage extensions?

Yes. Your coverage is automatically extended for up to 72 hours for a delay considered to be out of your control, such as an accident, vehicle breakdown, flight delay or hospitalization. If you are hospitalized, this 72-hour extension begins after you are released from care.

If you want to stay longer on your trip, you can extend your coverage if you contact Tour+Med during business hours before your policy expires. Any medical condition that you were treated for during the original policy period will be automatically excluded in the extension period. The insurer notes that it has the right to allow or deny extended coverage on a case-by-case basis.

Does Tour+Med Travel Insurance require a medical questionnaire?

Yes. Travellers aged 60 or over who are travelling for more than 15 days are required to complete a medical questionnaire.

Does Tour+Med Travel Insurance have any age restrictions?

Yes. You must be aged three months or more on the departure date for a single-trip plan, or be between three months of age and 85 years on the effective date for the annual multi-trip plan. In addition, online quotes are not available for travellers aged 80 and up, but you can call Tour+Med for assistance.

When does my coverage with Tour+Med Travel Insurance begin?

In general, if you purchase cancellation coverage, it begins the day you buy your policy and ends the day you make a claim or leave on your trip. Your medical and interruption coverage, if purchased, begins when you leave home. Your delay coverage begins once an insured risk prevents you from returning home as scheduled.

Does Tour+Med Travel Insurance offer a free look period?

Yes. Tour+Med offers a 10-day “right to examine” period for its medical emergency travel insurance. During this time you can review the policy and its limitations and exclusions and if you are not satisfied, you can return your policy by registered mail and your payment will be fully refunded, as long as you have not left on your trip.

Can I get a refund with Tour+Med Travel Insurance?

You can request a refund if you do not leave on your trip under the following conditions:

  • If you purchase a single-trip plan, you need to request your refund before your departure date, or it will be considered an early return request.
  • If you purchase an annual multi-trip plan, there is no refund after the effective date of your policy.

If you return early from your trip, you can request a refund if no claim is either paid or pending. You must submit your request for a premium refund within 30 days of returning home. There is no administrative fee, but no refund will be issued for amounts due of less than $20.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Your particular lifestyle, the medical tourism destination, and the type of medical tourism procedure you will be undergoing will dictate, to a large degree, how much money you will be spending. In general, the farther away your medical tourism destination the more you will pay for airfare. So, for example, expect to pay more if you are flying from Dallas to Bangkok, Thailand, than you would for a flight to Monterey, Mexico. At the same time, you also need to take into account that some medical tourism destinations are more expensive than others. So even if a particular country is cheaper to travel to, you will need to factor in the relative cost of “living,” in comparison to another medical tourism destination.

What about your lifestyle preferences? Do you plan to stay at a five-star hotel or are you comfortable “roughing” it at a local bed and breakfast? Some adventurous souls prefer to immerse themselves in the local culture and will literally live on a shoestring budget. Most everyone else though will tend to fall somewhere between the Holiday Inn and Club Med. The type of medical tourism procedure or medical tourism treatment you are undergoing will also play a large part in your decision of where to stay and what you will do. A medical tourism patient undergoing open heart surgery or a knee replacement will require extra care and very comfortable conditions after leaving the hospital. Not the case for someone coming for a dental bridge or an eyelid lift. Wherever you decide to stay, make sure it serves your needs as a medical tourism patient.

Many of the expenses of a medical tourism trip will be the same as those of a “normal” trip or vacation. At the very minimum you will need to budget for airfare, hotel accommodations, transportation requirements and meals. Sightseeing tours and souvenirs are also a real possibility, particularly if you are traveling with a companion.

Although there are many benefits associated with medical tourism, there are also certain risks that must be weighed before making a final decision to travel abroad.

Varying standards and Medical Tourism

Varying standards with regards to hospitals and physicians can be a problem if you are searching for options within multiple countries with dozens of hospitals. Each country will have its own licensing and certification protocols which may vary significantly from your own country. As you have no way of actually visiting the hospital or meeting the physician prior to your trip, you will have to do research to make sure hospitals are accredited and surgeons are licensed. MedicalTourism.com offers a wealth of information and tools that will make this job much easier.

Travel after surgery

Traveling long distances after surgery also poses certain risks such as deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism. DVT may be defined as a blood clot that forms in a vein deep in the body. If the blood clot breaks off and travels through the blood stream to the lungs, a pulmonary embolism may occur which is potentially fatal. Using simple preventive measures, however, medical tourism patients can reduce the chance of blood clotting and increase their likelihood of surgical success.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends:

• Getting up and walking around every 2 to 3 hours.

• Exercise your legs while you’re sitting

• Drink plenty of water, and avoid drinking anything with alcohol or caffeine in it.

Additionally, medical compression stockings and anti-clotting medications such as Warfarin and Heparin, may be prescribed by physicians for high risk medical tourism patients.

Minimal legal recourse in case something goes wrong

It is important to remember that if you do have a serious complication, other countries' malpractice and liability recourses may be different from those in your own country. Also keep in mind that some hospitals may require a medical tourism patient to sign a legal waiver stating that if they do file a lawsuit over the surgery, the lawsuit must be adjudicated in the country where the medical procedure was performed.

Coordinating appropriate aftercare once you come home

This is one the biggest concerns for medical tourism patients considering traveling abroad for surgery. What happens if I have a complication once I return home? Who will I turn to? Will my doctor even see me? These are valid questions that must be addressed by the hospital you are seeking care at.

Make sure to inform your primary physician that you will be going overseas and try to get him or her involved in the process. You may also want to try and schedule a call between your primary physician and your international doctor to discuss your case.  This is wise not only at a medical level (you want your international physician to know as much as possible about your case history), but also has the potential to establish trust between both parties, making your physician empathetic toward your situation and wanting to be an active participant in the success of your procedure.

Presently, and in order to minimize potential complications, many international hospitals and physicians do maintain close contact with their medical tourism patients once they have returned home. Therefore, you should not feel shy about contacting them if you feel something is wrong. At the very least your overseas physician can offer recommendations about what medications to take, who to see, or possibly even explain details of your condition to another doctor.

In medical tourism, a Familiarization Tour or Fam Trip is a trip organized by a public or private entity seeking to showcase the healthcare and tourism assets in a certain region, country or city, in order to attract new business (usually in the form of patients). Fam trips are often organized by the tourism board, medical tourism cluster, or by a Destination Management Organization (DMO) representing a destination. Participants in the Fam trip are typically buyers of medical tourism services such as foreign governments, insurance companies, employers and medical tourism facilitators. They are vetted in advance and usually have all their travel, accommodation and maintenance fees covered during the trip.

Sometimes referred to as medical tourism agencies, or a medical travel facilitator, these are companies that, as their name suggests, act as facilitators or intermediaries for patients seeking treatments in other countries or regions.

Medical Tourism Facilitators have played an important role in promoting the growth of medical tourism, and for many medical tourism patients, represent their first face to face contact with the concept of medical tourism.

Over the last 10-15 years, thousands of these companies have popped up, most sporting names synonymous with health and travel. They function much like a travel agency, requesting and obtaining passports, booking flights, and arranging a medical tourism patient’s lodging, transportation and tours. The key difference, of course, is that they also serve as the liaison or mediator between you and the international hospital and doctor. In effect, it is the facilitator’s job to repackage the medical provider’s service offering, make it more appealing, and then guide you along the medical tourism process.

Testimonials

We have had Tour-Med for the last 7-8 years.

And …yes… we did had an expensive claim:

  • service was EXCEPTIONAL
  • response and attention to detail was IMPECCABLE
  • claims payments were PROMPTLY made…NO HASSLES…they paid and delivered EXACTLY what they promised.
  • have NOT had a premium increase due to the 2 claims as far as we can tell.
  • after discharge from hospital, they followed up with us to find out if anything was still standing and how we were doing.

They are NOT the cheapest nor most expensive but WE fully endorse their policies.

We sent our documents for cancellation of our trip and received the refund in less than 10 days. Extraordinary service. I will deal with Tourmed again.

I unfortunately had a motor bike accident in Utah in July, 2023.  I was severely injured and spent a week in the hospital. I received EXCELLENT care and was 'medevact' to my home in BC on a private jet with two medical attendants..I can only imagine the cost for all this as all the bills were paid for by Tour+Med. Any bills I did receive I simply forwarded to them for payment. No questions asked!  I UNEQUIVOCALLY  recommend Tour+Med!!  Choosing Tour+Med as my insurer saved my life and my retirement pension!!  With gratitude, R.R.

We received a letter last week informing us that my husband's invoice from the hospital in Florida had been paid. This email is to say THANK YOU for the excellent service. We received professional service from the beginning. Every time we had a call, the first thing that was asked is how we were doing, and it feels good to see that human service still exists. We won't go away for long periods anymore due to (our age and) what happened this year, but rest assured, we will recommend you to our friends and family.

I received your letter dated July 4, advising me that TourMed had paid my hospital bill after my incident in Arizona in April. I can’t tell you how relieved I am to know that was covered! I thank you so much!

To give you a little background of the incident… there were 12 of us exploring the desert beauty in the area South of Florence, when we were all attacked by a huge swarm of Africanized honey bees (more commonly known as ‘killer bees’). We were all stung, but I seemed to be the worst. In my hospital stay, they told me they had removed over 500 stingers from my body, primarily my back, chest, face and scalp. The bees were in my nose, ears, and mouth. I was intubated and airlifted to the trauma centre where I was treated for 5 days. I am still not 100%, but a little better everyday. We have all been wary of scorpions and rattlesnakes in the desert, but not these bees!

I am very lucky to have survived this incident, and I truly believe the quick response from the medical team that treated me played a huge part in my survival. I am so very grateful to all involved in my ongoing recovery from this horrific ordeal.

Read our blog article about this medical emergency.

Thank you for your prompt handling of my request. It's very nice to see something go through so smoothly!

I had a medical problem arise while on holidays in Texas and required an emergency hospital visit. The LS-Travel Company far exceeded my expectations. Everyone that my husband or I spoke with at LS-Travel was amazing and I deeply appreciate how efficient my claim was handled. I would highly recommend this company for your travel insurance needs and am truly grateful to all the helpful kindness that your team provided. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

My wife was hospitalized and needed to be repatriated to Canada in an air-ambulance. You were there at all times during this ordeal and showed great sollicitude.

You show empathy and do exceptional work. We greatly appreciate your professionalism.

I want to thank you for dealing with my medical claim so quickly and efficiently. The online claims process was simple and easy to understand. It took very little time. Impressive! I will recommend your company to my friends.

We need to do more with less, new Oregon Health Authority director says during Central Oregon visit, tour

med on tour

(Update: adding video, comment from OHA Director Dr. Sejal Hathi)

BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) -- New Oregon Health Authority Director Dr. Sejal Hathi's regional tour of Central Oregon health care organizations and facilities -- her fifth around the state -- begat Monday.

She's visiting several sites and medical facilities, such as the Mosaic Community Health Federally Qualified Health Center, to learn about what the region wants and needs from the state with regards to health care.

Dr. Hathi's visit to Central Oregon follows a tour of the Portland area, where she visited several key organizations including the Miracles Club, Virginia Garcia Wellness Center and Central City Concern.

The trip is part of a "broader, months-long state tour to identify and center the priorities of all Oregon communities in OHA’s strategic planning," the agency said.

Monday's visit to the Mosaic Federally Qualified Health Center included a tour of the facility and a roundtable listening session where she heard from area health care providers and those who assist patients.

On Tuesday, she plans to visit a public health facility in Redmond, where she'll meet with public health agency representatives from around the region.

Dr. Hathi said it's all about learning "what their biggest challenges and needs are and what they wish someone in my position, especially someone new to Oregon and new to the agency, new to this role, would know and act upon to support them and better serve their patients."

Dr. Hathi was appointed by the governor as OHA director in February.

She has been visiting communities across Oregon to hear directly about the health challenges they face. At Mosaic Community Health in Bend, she learned about their biggest needs from the state.

"In doing so, I hope that this community's needs, their priorities, their specific perspectives, and our approach to those challenges will be embedded in and reflected in the strategies and the actions that as an agency we take," Dr. Hathi said.

Dr. Hathi's says her initial priorities are eliminating health inequity, transforming Oregon's behavioral health system, and expanding access to affordable health care.

"Even within Central Oregon, the needs, the priorities, the manner in which these challenges manifest can be very different between Redmond and Bend," she said.

Dr. Hathi says funding for the next two years will continue at the same level, with very little additional funding -- meaning they have to find ways to do more with less.

"We're going to be looking at how can we leverage that infrastructure, the partnerships, the dollars that we've already brought to bear to be able to at least sustain this good work," she said.

Dr. Hathi expects key issues affecting access to health care in Central Oregon are related to shortages in the workforce. Other challenges include the behavioral health crisis and access to coverage.

Dr. Hathi also intends to work with the Warm Springs Tribes to specifically address needs and make sure their priorities are represented. She says they've already created a tribal consultation team and are determined to close health gaps as part of the state's 2030 goal to eliminate health inequities.

"We don't sufficiently honor and address and accommodate that government-to-government relationship," she said. "And so we look forward to working in partnership with them to devise what the next six years should look like."
