The best places to eat on the Delhi-Nainital highway

As we approach the dog days of summer, stocking up on cooling drinks and starting new skincare routines, a road trip to the hills sits high on the to-do list for the season. A 325 kilometre drive on NH87 from Delhi leads you straight to Nainital , right in the midst of the lake district. The city works as a launchpad for other spots beyond, from Kasar Devi and Kausani, all the way to Munsiyari. The road journey from Delhi to Nainital is a drive I’ve done regularly for nearly 20 years now, each time I head home to the hills where I grew up. Along the way, the landscape and dining possibilities are ever-evolving as compared to the near-zero options of the yesteryears. These are the best spots along the way that offer the two absolute essentials of any highway pitstop: comfort food and clean bathrooms.

Here are the best places to eat along the Delhi-Nainital highway:

Shiva Tourist Dhaba

An hour into the drive, Shiva Dhaba is a great first stop for its kulfi if nothing else. A kiosk at the entrance announces ‘ Delhi ’s famous kulfi’. It may not be that, but it’s definitely rich, creamy and delicious - a perfect kickstarter for the highway. The eatery has all the regulars of a typical dhaba, from piping hot parathas in a range of fillings to good old butter toast and chai, along with the staple North Indian thalis . If you are a brunch person who stops to fuel up once and can carry on for a long stretch, this is your spot. If it’s still early to stop for a meal, go for the kulfi; it’s never too early for an iced summer dessert. Almost a mid-way break and an ideal comfort food stopover (take a U-turn to go to the right side of the highway) , Udupiwala serves homely, hygienic meals from the south in a lush setting. Beautifully landscaped patches flanked by palm trees surround a cluster of concrete and bamboo huts in an earthy, outdoor setting, while rows of neat tables line the indoor seating. Light on the stomach and senses, pick from their range of crisp dosas and vadas, fluffy idlis or tamarind rice. The combo meals like my favourite idli vada meal allow you to try two to three different items that are filling, flavourful and easy on the tummy. Down it all with a cool buttermilk. Their smaller, original branch is near the railway station in Kathgodam towards the other end of this drive. Brar Bakers

A relatively new cafe on UP’s busy Rampur-Bilaspur-Rudrapur stretch that had no suitable stopover options until recent times, Brar Baker’s is a refreshing change from petrol pump loo breaks in the area. A bakery- cafe serving sandwiches, patties, cream rolls and pastries in a pleasant ambience, it’s part of a small plaza. It is sandwiched between a Subway outlet and Kesari restaurant, and the trio has a verandah sit-out on the first floor with plenty of plants. Clean washrooms, ample parking space off the main road, and an outdoor tea and snack station make it a good place to stop before entering the chaos of Rudrapur and Haldwani in Uttarakhand . As you exit the busy main parts of Haldwani and emerge in the suburb of Kathgodam, the last railway station before the hills, you’ll drive past department stores, malls and numerous food joints. Stop at this cafe on the first floor of the Benetton building at the edge of a shopping square where you can also browse for some branded or designer clothing. I particularly like this square when it is lit in the evenings and the cafe too turns on its fairy lights which cover its potted plants and colourful furniture in the outdoor seating area.

Get a refreshing lemonade with sliders, fries, or other finger food , or a taco if you have a bigger appetite, and get going towards your destination. Price:  Rs350 per person Must try: The Mexican fare Address : First Floor, Brij Vihar building, KFC square, Haldwani, Uttarakhand

Pots & Stones Cafe

A little ahead on the right is one of the first trendy cafes to have popped up in the area, Pots & Stones. The coffee house is the brainchild of Shivendra Goel, a young entrepreneur who created this upmarket community cafe, as he likes to call it, in 2015. From a colourful cafe to the minimalist space it is today, I have seen this spot metamorphose just like its menu; what started as an urban space that brought people together with its coffee and snooker tables, has made way for pottery workshops and art exhibitions . You’ll find everything from fresh fruit juices to gourmet coffee, and thin crust pizzas to my morning favourite, their eggs benedict served with crisp hash brown potatoes and salad. This cafe also doubles as the restaurant for the boutique North House hotel just behind it. A few kilometres from here, you hit the foothills. Cafe Arcadia

Within thirty minutes of leaving the highway and beginning the climb to Nainital, a row of tiny new cafes pops up on the right in the Bhujiyaghat stretch. Arcadia is a fairly new, cute-as-a-button cafe that serves refreshing drinks and snacks like noodles, fries and sandwiches that you can enjoy outside in the long balcony, or seated in the comfortable couch indoors. They do not serve mains and the service could get a bit slow, but it gives you all the time to soak in the mountain air and views around. Mudhouse Cafe

Just a bit further up the Dolmar bend, Mudhouse Cafe is the latest muse of those who drive up or down from Nainital, and rightly so— an elfin indoor seating area with charming interiors opens on to a wide, wooden deck with outdoor furniture, glass tables, and a colourful riot of begonias in pots and planters. This lovely open sitout overlooks the hills and provides beautiful views of the valley framing the narrow Gaula tributary far down below, and great photo ops. They serve good pizzas and sandwiches, and shakes made with preserves. In about 30-40 minutes from here, you’ll reach your destination, Nainital . Guwahati - Tawang - DHABA End Dee’s Samaroh

If this is your first time road tripping across Assam, DHABA End Dee’s Samaroh on Tezpur to Tawang route is your best bet. Try the authentic and traditional Assamese food, especially the duck curry. Here, you will find delicious non-vegetarian and vegetarian items.

Bengaluru - Goa - Sai Palace

I visited this dhaba with family. Location is good I.e. on highway at bareilly more, while going shahjahanpur to bareilly highway route. Sufficient parking space, cleaned place. Menu is ok and prices are moderate. Taste is punjabi tadka type. Service is also good.

must try is Matka Daal, Paneer etc with roti. Its road side dhaba but preparation is too good and very cost effective.
