First Class Hunting in Namibia

Line Shape

Jan Oelofse Hunting Safaris, our experienced and passionate team of professional hunters, will provide you with one of the best hunting experiences in Namibia and all of Africa. We are a family-run operation, established by the famous conservationist Jan Oelofse and his family in Namibia in 1975. Since the passing of this great man, our beloved husband, father, entrepreneur, inventor, artist, mentor and friend to many, the Oelofse family Annette and Alex with Carola, are carrying on the legacy he left behind. Our hunts are customized to accommodate the expectations of hunters from various backgrounds and ages, we welcome families with children, bow-hunters and disabled hunters alike. Being above all passionate conservationists, our dream is to offer hunts such to naturally sustain the environment and all its animals, with the interest of the current and the future generations of animals and hunters at heart. In Jan Oelofse’s words, our aim is to: “Always give back more to nature than you take out.” We invite you to experience exactly that which our forefathers called Africa!

Jan Oelofse Legacy Award

The Jan Oelofse Legacy Award has been offering hunts annually to disabled hunters since 1992, including 10 trophy animals, daily rates and skinning.

Previously, this award was part of the SCI Pathfinder Award, but unfortunately it was decided to no longer include this opportunity at the SCI events.

We have wholeheartedly chosen to continue this legacy in the name of conservationist Jan Oelofse, who was the founder of our outfit, and the initiator behind this award many years ago. Our facilities are fully equipped to cater for disabled hunters, offering hunts to outdoorsmen and women in wheelchairs, from lightly disabled candidates to quadriplegics. Our professional hunter Rudie de Klerk is exceptionally experienced in guiding these hunts, having suffered and recovered from a disability inflicted by an elephant attack some time ago. The recipients of this award have often found this experience life-changing, and have given us the opportunity to meet extraordinarily inspirational people, who have succeeded against the odds. It would be our greatest honour and privilege to continue hosting hunters who deserve to be rewarded for continuing a shared passion for the outdoors.

FOR THE BEST EXPERIENCE OF YOUR LIFE.

Whether it’s a hunting or photographic safari you’re after, we’ll strive to fulfil your every desire, from wish list to bag list.

OTHER ACTIVITIES

More than just your run of the mill hunting lodge.

namibia safari hunting

If you want to get away from it all, we offer you an African camping experience bar none. And we do it in style: our luxury tented camps, one in northwestern Namibia and the other in the Caprivi, provide all the facilities and amenities your heart could desire. All you have to do is sit back and relax. There’s nothing quite like a crackling campfire, the distant roar of a lion and a star-lit African sky after an exciting day’s hunt.

namibia safari hunting

For those who prefer to do their shooting with a camera, we offer splendid game drives from Omujeve Lodge, through one of the most starkly beautiful places in the world, where you can see nature at its most awe-inspiring. Wildlife on our 11 000-hectare property is a big viewing attraction, but the landscapes, birdlife and plantlife of Namibia are every bit as breathtaking. Because we never hunt from our vehicles, we are able to treat you to very close encounters in the rawest and most beautiful of Africa’s environments.

namibia safari hunting

For those who wish to dip their toes back into city life – or for spouses or children who would like to be kept entertained while one family member hunts – we offer tailored tours to Windhoek. This vibrant city offers a wealth of shopping opportunities, and plenty to see and do.

namibia safari hunting

A favourite activity for kids (of all ages!) is our angling trips to the West Coast Recreational Area at Swakopmund on the Atlantic Ocean. Here, budding junior anglers and those with more experience can cast for gamefish and sharks (catch-and-release), at sea or from the shore.

namibia safari hunting

With parental approval and permission, our professional hunters are willing to work with children, teaching them how to handle and fire a rifle. They start with a .22 and, if appropriate, may work their way up to higher-calibre guns.

namibia safari hunting

The dining room with its bar, entertainment area, and generous verandah is the perfect place to unwind after a busy day. All meals, lovingly and expertly prepared by a team of chefs trained by prize-winning foodie Elsada Kruger, will linger in your memory long after the last bite has been savoured. We specialise in game dishes, and use organically homegrown ingredients harvested from our farm.

Ozondjahe Hunting Safaris is the perfect destination for first time hunters, seasoned hunters, as well as being family friendly and able to accommodate large groups of up to fourteen. We are located in a malaria-free zone in the central Otjozondjupa region of Namibia, which is known for its plentitude of game and neighbors the Waterberg Plateau National Park. Our hunting territory consists of a variety of differing terrains including an entire mountain range (Ozondjahe Peak), bush land and open savannahs teaming with huge herds of Wildebeest, Oryx, Impala, Eland and more.

Our family has owned and operated Ozondjahe for over 40 years. Ozondjahe Hunting Safaris is one of the largest privately owned hunting only game reserve in Namibia with 75,000 acres (30.000 hectares) or 120 square miles (300 square kilometers) on one solid landmass. Our property is ten times larger than the typical hunting outfitter in Namibia. Most hunting outfitters in Namibia claim large hunting areas however they are combining different small properties that they hunt on which you will have to travel between. Our vast hunting property makes it possible for you to enjoy your entire hunting safari in one place avoiding the interference of driving all over Namibia which cuts into your sleeping, relaxing or hunting pleasure.

Please continue scrolling down the page to read more…

There are over 15,000 free range wild animals living naturally within our densely populated game-only territory. We boast unsurpassed trophy quality with over 30 huntable species such as Greater Kudu, Cape Eland, Gemsbok, Blue and Black Wildebeest, Zebra, Impala, Warthog as well as Leopard and Cheetah just to name a few. Our clients consistently leave with top quality trophies across the board. Ozondjahe Hunting Safaris has an exceptional number of hunting trophies in the top 10 all time record book of the Namibia Professional Hunting Association (NAPHA). More than 85% of our hunting trophies reach NAPHA Gold Medal standards or higher.

You will discover that Namibia is not only beautiful with a pleasant climate, it is the easiest, stable, safe and clean hunter friendly country in Africa. The airport offers simple in and out for your rifles and the excellent roads makes it an easy country to travel.

Every hunting safari we do is custom tailored to meet your specific desires with your unsurpassed satisfaction being our foremost priority. You may choose to hunt one on one (1×1) with your own Professional Hunter, or alongside a friend (2×1), two hunters with one Professional Hunter. At Ozondjahe Hunting Safaris, we take considerable pride in the manner in which we conduct our traditional rifle and bowhunting safaris. We also offer a combination bow and rifle hunt for those who are interested. There may be an opportunity, depending upon the season, for some action packed wingshooting as well, click here to visit our Bow Hunting page and here for our Wingshooting page.

In an effort to ensure exceptional trophy quality and sustainable hunting, we choose to offer fewer hunting safaris than many other outfits. We are devoted to conservation and view hunters as our supporting partners in protecting African wildlife and guarding natural habitat for future generations.

At Ozondjahe Hunting Safaris in Namibia you will find a superior level of service and hospitality, unparalleled luxurious accommodations, incredible European quality cuisine with some delicious African specialties and a variety of fun and interesting activities for hunters, non-hunters and the entire family.

We have completely redone our entire lodge; three guest bungalows which can accommodate up to four guests each, main lodge house which can accommodate up to 8 more guests, landscaping, pool and awesome African thatch roof pool house (which is really a gigantic comfortable outdoor living space with bar, dining area and living room with fireplace and waterhole game viewing all done in five star African luxury). We can easily accommodate intimate smaller hunting parties up to large multi-family groups in uncompromising comfort. We have hosted corporate groups such as Winchester and Leica. Our warm and friendly staff are here to attend to your every need.

We are proud to have a reputation as one of the most well established, experienced and trustworthy safari companies in Namibia. Our clients’ testimonials and high rate of returning hunters certainly convey our excellence in hunting better than we ever could. With ondjou & van heerden safaris.

Ondjou Safaris cc was established in 2009 by Hentie van Heerden and Falko Schwarz, the sole members of Ondjou Safaris cc. Both company owners’ expertise in African hunting safaris stems from a family tradition.

Both hunters got to know each other at a young age and developed a respectful and deep friendship, which made them decide to open a business together. After 12 years of partnership Ondjou Safaris cc has proven that a long lasting and fruitful partnership in the hunting business is possible and that combining strengths is the key to success.

ONDJOU is a Namibian indigenous word for ELEPHANT, originating from the Herero tribe.

Testimonial

"If you've read anything on African hunting you've been exposed to the wit and prose of Robert Ruark. The highest compliment I can pay to Zana Botes would be to liken him to Harry Selby in "Use Enough Gun". I have been on twenty safaris in  sub Saharan Africa, in 5 different countries, and never have I had a PH more in line with the professional hunters of old. Zana will tell you what he expects from you, what his game plan is in regards to the game being hunted, and will then proceed to coordinate the efforts of those involved in an attempt to achieve success. He does what he says he'll do and is a man of his word- all done with a wicked sense of humor, a commitment to maintaining the true ethics of hunting, and a quiet demeanor that facilitates a positive experience even if a shot is not taken. If you hunt with this man you will experience African hunting the way it is supposed. I believe not only will you come away richer for the experience but you will have engaged in the sport as it should be, ethical and proper with the game given the respect it deserves.."

- Donald “Skip” Huston

Thank you  again for a wonderful hunt. Ian really enjoyed the stories of the hunt,  the pursuit, and the harvest. He has gone through your photos and our phone photos. Lots of good talk and sharing. We loved Namibia and Zana Botes Safaris.

Tom & Paula Gore

“These guys are a team and can track!!! I’ve hunted all my life and witnessed so much these last two weeks that I wish I learned  40 years ago. Covid is not an issue in the bush, travel is no problem, I feel sorry for people who don’t follow their dream and have an experience of a lifetime. I left my footprints in the dust!”

- Stephan Ira

The hunting experience my young boys and I had with Zana was simply excellent. Whilst we have been hunting in Namibia many times already, Zana made our safari very special. Zana is an excellent and very patient PH whose only leitmotif is ethical and sustainable hunting and he makes no compromise on this. My shooting performance was quite poor the first few days, but he restored my confidence that then all shots were well placed. Only very few PHs have this skill.

We benefited from Zana's educational commitment sharing his knowledge about Namibia, wildlife conservation and farming. My boys learned that game and habitat management are 99% of hunting and pulling the trigger is only 1%. Fabulous accommodation and food. The latter deserves at least one Michelin star.

Finally, Zana's trackers and guides also meet the highest standards of ethical hunting.

While I planned to bowhunt only, it was great fun and very exciting to pick up the rifle for stalks on a zebra and black wildebeest within an hours time.

Anton B

This is my 3rd hunting trip to Africa – It was an outstanding safari! Top level service, hospitality and hunting resulted in outstanding emotions during this safari. The best place in Namibia for perfect hunting!

Dmitry N

Outstanding safari! Lots of game and a truly challenging hunt, led by expertise PH’s. Kowas offers a high-quality, customized experience which is head-and-shoulders above the “fast food hunting: offered by the large corporate “safari factories” in other places.

John T

We did not dream of seeing so much game! This has been above and beyond a trip of a lifetime for us. We’ll forever cherish our memories of Kowas. Amazing trophies. We will be back.

Lauren C

Ever since I was a kid, I dreamt bout coming to Africa. I read every book by Peter Hathaway Capstick and becoming more fascinated with Africa. Coming to Kowas was truly an experience of a lifetime. This was magical. Thank you for the phenomenal experience. Can not wait to be back.

Mathew K

I have hunted with other outfits in the past but nothing compares with the excellent attention and experience that the Strauss family offers. Thank you for allowing me to fulfil a dream and an experience of a lifetime!

Raul de L

We keep on coming back – and will return again. You have perfected the art of creating memories to cherish for a lifetime.

Wayne G

Our second trip to hunt with Kowas Adventure Safaris was just as impressive as the first.  Great hunting, beautiful accommodations,  and creating friendships that will last forever. We look forward to out next trip with Kowas.

Josh H

2022 was the first African Safari for my oldest son and I. We had our best adventure together! We harvested many great trophies but had no idea we would make a new family in Namibia. We were blown away by the camp, the staff and the hunting. Already planning for 2024!

Steve A

My wife and I had our first trip to Africa, and we are glad we chose Namibia and Kowas Adventure Safaris. From the moment we started planning the trip prior to Covid 19, to the day we left Kowas to fly home, the entire staff was always responsive and helpful. Danie, Ansie, Jacques, Elleni and Matheus made us feel part of the family. We experienced genuine friendship at Kowas. Kowas is not only run as a successful business but also as a passionate way of life for the Strauss Family and all the Kowas staff.

Paul Y

It is impossible for me to appropriately articulate the amount of gratitude I have for the Strauss family and the entire Kowas team. Their approach to client service was warm, welcoming, and caring. It’s rare to find such genuine people, and we’re incredibly fortunate that they are now part of our lives.

Trent B

When it comes to finding and successfully hunting big free-range kudu bulls, PH Jacques Strauss has no equal. With nearly a half-million acres of prime free-range kudu habitat in his concession and a lifetime of passion for the species, Jacques will find you the bull of your dreams. I’m convinced he’s part kudu himself.

Joseph vB

We had an amazing time during our Honey Moon Safari at Kowas, the service was next level, the trophies outstanding and the experience unbelievable! We can’t wait to go back!

Jose N.

My first experience in Africa was with Kowas and after other trips to Africa it is still by far the best experience I have had. The hospitality of the Strauss Family is second to none. They strive to make your experience the best available through their impeccable attention to detail, trophy quality and generous spirits.

Austin B

I couldn’t have imagined a better first African hunting Safari. Thank you Kowas for an incredible adventure and amazing hospitality!

Adam W.

I can not express what a life changing time we had. The hunt experience and magnificent game would always be cherished.

George M.

I've been with Kowas 15 times, and looking forward to 15 more. I booked for the Bwabwata National Park with Kowas in July ‘23 for my 80th birthday celebration. I have conducted 38 trip to Africa - and have not met anyone better.

Terry B.

I can’t say enough positive things about all the staff at Kowas! Matheus and Jacques were great introductions to hunting with PHs in Africa, and we were all in awe of their capability to spot/stalk/track/answer any questions about any animals we saw. Danie, Ansie, and Elleni were wonderful company at every delicious meal and explained numerous traditions and customs in Namibia. All of the staff, including the chefs, drivers, skinners, and housekeeping were extremely friendly, polite, and catered to everything we could have asked.

Austin M.

This was my 5th trip to Kowas. It was the best African hunt/tour trip ever! The touring, hunting, meals, and accommodations were superb. The hospitality extended to us by the whole Strauss family was exceptional. Jacques and Matheus do their best to get you the animals you are hunting. Every visit to Kowas had new additions to the camp making it bigger and better. Mahango camp and staff were excellent too. Thank you for the memorable experience. Hard to believe it has been 19 years since our first hunt at Kowas.

Bill W.

Thank you for sharing your beautiful home and providing the best hunt ever!!!

Michael M

I have had the opportunity to hunt with Kowas 3 times and have taken numerous world class trophies. Although this is probably testimonial enough, the biggest compliment that I can pay them is the feedback of the people I recommend to trust Kowas with their safari. In all of the instances I have sent my friends and colleges to Kowas, they all have come back extremely happy. Whether it is the hunting, the hospitality or the overall experience, they all book again.

Jeremy H

What we have experienced here at Kowas, was perfection in every way. We had successful hunts, great trophies and we met a lot of nice people. We will be back.

THOMAS & ANKE LANGKAMP

This was the 5th trip to Africa, and the best African hunt/adventure ever!! The hunting, meals and accommodation were wonderful. The hospitality extended to us by the whole Strauss family, were exceptional. They make you feel at home. We are already planning a next trip to Kowas. Thank you for a wonderful experience.

LARRY & STEPHANIE STAAB

We will never forget the times spend at Kowas. We will always cherish the excitement of the hunts and then the moments by the campfire. Thank you for allowing us the chance to be part of the family, thanks to all the staff. The wonderful trophies are icing on the cake.

PABLO & ADRIANA LOHMANN

This was my 3rd trip to Kowas. The first two trips, I came with my father. As always, this father-and-son hunting was excellent and exciting. My 15-year-old son was amazed by the wildlife and the African experience in general as it is such a departure from our everyday life. The staff was friendly and helpful. We were always treated like a member of the Strauss family. We are so thankful for the opportunity to experience Africa in this way. I will cherish this trip with my son for the rest of my life and will always remember what Jacques taught us in the field.

STEPHEN POLITO

The Kowas experience has been truly an outstanding one. This was my first hunt with Kowas and the 4th hunt in Africa. The hunting experience was truly outstanding. The Mahango camp and staff were excellent as was the Kowas location. The level of care, attention, and assistance provided by the Strauss family through the entire process, was outstanding.

GEORGE FAIRS

This was the first trip and safari to Africa. It was the most amazing two weeks we could imagine. Everything exceeded our already high expectations. Our time together was tremendous. The hunting was better than I could possibly have imagined; amazing, with exceptional trophies taken. The accommodation was comfortable. The meals were delicious. It was a hunter’s paradise. We enjoyed the evening campfires and comradery. We are grateful for the way we were treated. We think about our trip often and we still talk about it daily. See you soon again.

KELLY CARMICHAEL

While the place is magnificent, the hunting extraordinary and the camp an oasis, it is you, the Strauss Team and Staff who we will treasure the most. Thank you for making our father-and-son trip to Namibia so very special by harvesting unique trophies. We pray it will only be the beginning of a lifetime friendship. Your delivery of an experience was characterized by: integrity, clear communication, a warm sense of humour, generosity, unpretentiousness, and family.

CHARLES HARTFORD

We not only made memories for a lifetime but new friends for a lifetime as well. Kowas will be the place to introduce the kids to Africa. I re-read my journal all the time, reliving those great memories of the hunt, great trophies harvested, and the time spent in camp with Kowas.

" No fences, no guarantees. Just real hunting, with the nice Campell family. This place has become, my home away from home. And hopefully will be, for years to come. The setup with a "small" family farm, warm people, surrounded by farms with numerous opportunities, that can fulfill all your African dreams, is the perfect way to enjoy the full Namibian experience. All orchestrated by Andrew Campell. A true hunter at heart, and dedicated to his guests wellbeing. On his watch, there is no easy way, to the perfect adventure. But rest assured, that he will be by your side, all the way. Enjoy the evenings around the fireplace, under the stars, with stories from the past, or from the present trip. But be careful..... It's addictive.  "

"This June I visited Okangawa Hunting Safari for a second time. My hunting buddy and I were so pleased with the first stay that we decided to come in a bigger group this time around. Andrew took good care of us from the very beginning of our stay and in comparison to our previous trip, we could see improvements in the camp, service, and the food was even better! For meat lovers, I highly recommend the barbecued sirloin prepared by Andrew himself, a cut taken from an antelope of the day. You will not forget this experience and taste very soon. We also had the opportunity to make two quick trips to some of the many tourist attractions of Namibia while we were there. This was a highlight to our trip but an addition to the main reason for our stay - hunting. Our trip was amazing as we were able to hunt three cats within a 48hour time period!!! It was hard to fathom that between two hunters we shot a Leopard and two giant Cheetahs. Though it was lucky it was not a coincidence, the hunt was extremely well prepared by Andrew, his staff and friends. We received an unlimited chance to stalk the plains for game on open and unfenced properties. This trip was not our last as we will be returning to satisfy our eyes, taste buds and souls."

"Okangawa Hunting Safaris has a very special place in my heart. I have been biltong hunting for many years in RSA until I discovered this Namibian gem. Located in the surrounds of the famous Omatako mountains makes this landscape a scenic & spectacular beauty. It also helps as a beacon for navigating your planned route during a hunt. We make use of the traditional "walk-n-stalk" method of hunting on our yearly visits to Okangawa Safaris which has always been successful with bringing home the biltong and drywors. Andrew is not just a professional hunter but an extremely good guide, "spoorsnyer", "braaier" and entertainer with tremendous bush knowledge. It is the place where you become part of the family and if you lucky enough to meet his wife, there will be lots of stories to be shared next to the campfire at night whilst the calling of hungry jackal can be heard in the background. This is true wilderness and a place where memories are made."

Exquisite plains game hunting under the Southern Cross...

The hunting history of Namibia is quite notable. It commenced as early as 2000 years ago when Bushmen men hunted with poison arrows and spears - often undertaking arduous excursions. The Bushmen hunters and gatherers are most likely representing one of the oldest existing populations found on earth. Hunting in Namibia remained as a form of livelihood and during the early 1960`s private land owners made a significant decision to conduct hunts on their private land in a professional manner. This venture subsequently led to the birth of NAPHA in 1974 (Namibian Professional Hunting Association) where a strong code of hunting ethics was formed and still maintained today. Although hunting methods have changed over years, the protection of our environment has not. The trophy hunting industry strives to promote ethical conduct, the sustainable utilization of natural resources, and to cherish the industry for current and future generations.

CLIENT REVIEWS

namibia safari hunting

I have bow hunted with traditional archery equipment for forty-five years, and hunting in Africa had always been one of my fantasies.  After a lot of research, I found that Makalaan Outfitters in Namibia was a better bargain than several outfitters in other African countries, so I booked a hunt.  My wife was excited as I was because she had wanted to see Africa since she was a small girl.  Namibia is a very safe country and inoculations were not required.

The hunt far exceeded our expectations as we had close encounters with many animals each day.  Our native tracker helped me select beautiful trophy animals within my self-imposed shooting range, and each of my animals was recovered within a short tracking distance.  Studying shot placements before we left really paid off because the heart and lungs of African game animals are in the shoulder area unlike American game animals.  My wife accompanied me every day on my hunts, taking photos and video for the DVD that we created.  We experienced the life and culture of Africa and we became friends with Antonie and Melinda Louw who were excellent hosts.  The Louw’s accommodations and table fare were excellent and they have a very professional staff.  Evenings were spent eating wild game and visiting around a fire getting to know each other.

My pre-trip packing list could have been better, but experience is the best teacher.  Since our trip, I have provided a complete packing list as well as travel tips and information to other bowhunters, which relieves a lot of stress and makes the trip more enjoyable.  Life is about making memories and our trip to Namibia, Africa enriched our lives.

If Africa is not on your bucket list, get a new bucket.  Give yourself a gift and make your own memories with Makalaan Outfitters in Namibia, Africa.  A story of my hunt can be found in the Winter 2018 issue of TradArcher’s World.

On request other species may be hunted in different concessions if booked in advance. Please enquire about species you are looking for when booking. Note that good game birds are also available when in season – depending on the time of year.

Omatako Ranch was selected from only a few farms in Namibia by the Ministry of Environment and Tourism (M.E.T) to host Black Rhino under a custodianship program. The Rhino are often spotted and make for exciting viewing but is not available for hunting.

Hunting Areas

Hunting is done in the central and northwestern parts of Namibia, 90 minutes drive north of the capital city, Windhoek. Omatako, the main hunting area (16 000 ha or 40 000 acres), is part of the Ombotozu conservancy, which spans more than 800 000 acres. Most of the hunting is done on Omatako, which has 33 game species available for hunting. Depending on the circumstances, one can also hunt in the conservancy with permission of the owner. Guests have the option to hunt in a low fenced area, which is a 15 min drive from Omatako Hunting Trails. The hunting area totals 20 000 ha or +/- 50 000 acres.

The advantage of hunting with Omatako is that one saves a lot of time traveling between hunting areas and of course you’re not restricted to hunting quotas. On the hunt you will be guided by a team of PH’s, which includes me and Johan Jr. If more PH’s are required we make use of a freelance PH who is familiar with the area to be hunted.

Our hunting season officially starts on the 1st of February until the end of November, for rifle hunting.

Namibia is one of the only countries in Africa that has a medal and minimum scoring system. That protects the hunter from shooting animals that does not make the minimum score, which could not be exported. Also to show the hunter how good his trophy is. The area is situated on the Northern banks of Cahorra Bassa and has access to 60 miles of lake frontage, which is home to numerous crocodiles and hippos. The total area is over 1,100,000 acres in size, with the lake home to some of Africa's most fearsome predators - the Tiger Fish. The area is mainly mountains, with river streams which run between them. This is one of the last wild areas left in Africa. This piece of unspoiled Africa has the most beautiful sunsets over the lake. This is a great area if you truly want to hunt in the wild.

This area is well known for its leopards, lions and monster crocodiles. It’s not far-fetched to state that Mozambique may become the most sought after Safari destination in Africa. The magnificent scenery combined with the vastness of the area's abundance of game and pristine nature, makes this without a doubt one of Africa’s last great wilderness areas.

Elephant in the room: Why Botswana, Namibia want fewer of the gentle giants

Botswana alone is home to a third of the entire African elephant population – more than any other country in the world.

Elephants drink water from a river in Chobe National Park

They might be an awesome sight to see from a safe distance on safari as they lumber around with their big, lopping ears and long trunks, but for those who live side by side with elephants, these mammals can quickly become a menace.

Elephants’ numbers in African countries have dwindled hugely in the past. Conservation efforts since the 1980s, however, have seen populations recover somewhat. In Southern African countries, where about half of the African elephant population resides, their higher numbers mean they are starting to come into conflict with humans.

Disappearing eels and the fight for a centuries-old livelihood, in colombia, hunting poachers, not drug traffickers, why are one-fifth of the world’s migratory species facing extinction, botswana threatens to send 20,000 elephants to germany.

As a result, some of these countries have tried to reduce their elephant numbers. In Botswana, which has the largest number of elephants in the world, President Mokgweetsi Masisi has sought to push controversial policies, like the promotion of hunting by rich tourists. Last month, he lashed out at the German government for considering a ban on the import of elephant parts, threatening to send Berlin 20,000 of its jumbos.

The diplomatic spat made catchy headlines. But it belied the serious challenges facing elephants, rural communities and conservationists working to find solutions.

Two men lift huge elephant tusks in Kruger national Park, South Africa

How have elephant numbers changed in the past?

Following long periods of overhunting and poaching for their meat and expensive ivory tusks, elephant numbers collapsed dramatically across Africa between the 1970s and 80s. About 100,000 elephants were killed each year during that time, according to the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). While an estimated three to five million elephants roamed the continent around 1930, the number had fallen to 1.3 million in 1979, the WWF says. According to researchers who have looked back as far as the 1500s, elephant populations in Africa have shrunk by some 98 percent.

Numbers continued to fall from 1979 until conservation practices – including crucial bans on sales of elephant parts and trophy hunting – halted the decline. Total elephant numbers in Africa currently stand at about 415,000, according to WWF estimates.

This is still low compared with historical numbers. In particular, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) lists the African bush elephant as endangered and the African forest elephant as critically endangered, meaning they still face the threat of extinction.

The African bush elephant is a bigger animal inhabiting the savannah grasslands of Southern and Eastern Africa, making up 70 percent of the total population on the continent. Its cousin – the African forest elephant – is native to Western and Central Africa and is recognisable by its smaller, rounded ears and short, pointed tusks.

Botswana, Namibia, Angola, Zambia and Zimbabwe together account for more than half of the African bush elephant population. Botswana alone is home to about 130,000 bush elephants – about half of the region’s numbers. It is a big country with a small population of two million people, comparable in size to France, which has a population of 67 million. For every 15 people in Botswana, there is about one elephant.

Zimbabwe has the second-largest bush elephant population at about 100,000.

Elephants roam in the Hwange Game Reserve, Zimbabwe

Why have rising numbers of elephants become a challenge?

The largest living land animals’ feeding habits can dramatically alter ecosystems during their roughly 60 years of life. They have few natural predators to manage their numbers besides humans and, with people out of the way, elephants can populate quickly, says researcher Lucy King from the non-profit organisation, Save the Elephants.

“When left alone, they breed pretty well [and] their numbers can go up quite steadily over time because their survival rate is pretty good,” King says.

During the same time that elephant numbers have steadied, human population growth has doubled across Africa. In Southern and Eastern Africa, the population grew from 312 million in 1994 to 633 million in 2021 according to the United Nations Population Fund. That growth has seen humans occupy more land area and increasingly encroach on wildlife habitats. Settlements and farms have also cut roaming wildlife off from water or food sources.

As a result, humans and elephants are coming into more frequent contact and are clashing over the same resources. Foraging herbivores often roam onto farms, rip open thatch roofs on huts in search of food or cause damage to water pipes and other infrastructure. This has prompted angry locals to retaliate and attack them. Those interactions can be fatal for both man and beast.

Climate change has also caused more elephants to wander further than they once would have – and to more unpredictable places – to seek scarce food and water.

Zimbabwe is a peak conflict site, but human-elephant clashes are increasingly occurring across the region, King says.

Countries like Zimbabwe and Botswana blame elephant overpopulation and argue that reducing their numbers would reduce these clashes. However, some experts reject this suggestion, pointing out that there used to be many more elephants in Africa.

How have governments tried to tackle the issue?

South Africa, Namibia, Zimbabwe and Botswana have all tried to reduce the number of elephants in their territory at certain points, but nearly all their methods have been met with criticism or outright condemnation from animal welfare organisations.

One practice is culling – the deliberate targeting and killing of several animals, usually whole families, together.

This practice was popular around the 1980s and 90s. In South Africa’s Kruger Park, a culling campaign saw about 14,000 elephants killed between 1967 and 1995. However, the practice was outlawed after African countries faced a global backlash, such as widespread calls for tourists to boycott countries culling elephants.

However, in 2008, South Africa defied the global outcry and lifted its culling ban. In 2021, Zimbabwe – which had killed about 50,000 elephants between 1967 and 1988 – said it was considering bringing back  the practice.

Conservationists such as King argue that culling is particularly cruel for elephants, who are emotionally intelligent and can experience trauma. Besides, the method is not effective and is also “not effective as a solution to human-elephant conflict,” she says.

Governments have also attempted to simply sell off part of their herds, although animal welfare groups say elephants could be shipped to zoos and used for human entertainment.

In 2021, Namibia auctioned 170 elephants but sold only a third – at 5.9 million Namibian dollars ($400,000). There was so much bad press and criticism of the sale that buyers were discouraged, officials said.

Another way to control numbers is by allowing trophy hunting, whereby countries license adventure seekers – usually tourists from the United States and other Western countries – to kill a limited number of animals in specific, allocated areas for their horns, skins and tusks. Often, these tourists target male elephants – or bulls – for their bigger tusks.

Government officials in Southern Africa – and hunters themselves – argue that hunting helps manage the elephant population naturally and provides revenue for local communities. That in turn incentivises local communities to stop illegal poaching and to ensure that elephant numbers remain steady — and never drop below a sustainable level. Hunting licences can cost as much as $10,000, depending on the animal being hunted.

African governments are often angered by the idea of Western countries telling them the practice is unethical – hence the threat by Botswana to ship 20,000 elephants to Germany. Botswana’s President Masisi has been a particular advocate for the return of hunting licences. In 2019, after he took office, Botswana lifted a five-year ban on elephant hunting.

What are the arguments against hunting?

Some conservationists dismiss this anger from African governments.

“I just think it’s extremely shortsighted. I think it’s a convenient smokescreen behind which to hide and justify trophy hunting which is big business,” says Ross Harvey, a wildlife economist with the non-profit organisation Good Governance Africa. Harvey points out that much of the funds from trophy hunting – first introduced in colonial Kenya – go to wealthy businessmen who own trophy hunting companies, rather than into conservation efforts.

“How much of it actually ends up going to conservation is highly questionable, certainly not enough to conserve the landscape, and how much of it accrues to poor community members is also extremely unclear,” he adds. “But now that elephant is gone, now you live with the negative effects of having taken out all the bulls – typically in their reproductive peak.”

Older males often help guide younger bulls, teaching them where to find food and water, or how to behave. When they are killed, younger males can become aggressive, researchers have found.

“My prediction is that you’re going to see an increase in human and elephant conflict because when you take out all the bulls that are responsible for disciplining the herd, then crop raiding is going to increase, not decrease,” says Harvey.

So, what is the solution?

Harvey says while elephant numbers may have increased since the 1990s, the real problem is not one of “overpopulation” but rather of humans cutting off connecting land strips or corridors which elephants – and all wildlife – use to migrate in search of food and habitat. Freeing up those spaces, he argues, will reduce human-elephant interactions.

“If you shoot them, you just exacerbate the problem,” he says.

“There’s only two solutions really,” says King. “One, to have breathing space. We keep throwing up fences everywhere and stopping [elephants], so they get squeezed into areas where they can then deplete the vegetation incredibly fast. The only solution is to release the valves and make sure the fences come down. That does not mean that elephants should be everywhere … but you can’t fence elephants in.”

In northern Botswana, one initiative called the “Eco-Exist Project” worked with locals to identify and demarcate more than 60 elephant corridors across the sprawling Okavango Delta. The team then worked with communities to replan village layouts, so that farms, homes and other infrastructure would be positioned away from these “elephant highways”.

It is not yet clear how much this project has reduced human-elephant conflict, but some 65,000 hectares (160,600 acres) of farmland belonging to 500 farmers, have been protected so far. Farmers have also clustered to share farm spaces which they have ringed with fences or crops such as chilli – which elephants dislike and therefore avoid.

Another solution, King says, is to teach people how to live more harmoniously with the animals. Her research on natural ways to fend off elephants from settlements and farms in southern Kenya has yielded some results.

King found that when she played sound recordings of swarming bees, elephants would disperse in a hurry. She then started to experiment with building beehive fences around several farmsteads. This is a rudimentary method which is suitable for rural communities – farmers need only poles to mount boxes housing the hives. Women then harvest the honey and sell it for some side income. The method is now being employed in 17 African countries and some areas in Asia.

“We’re really proud about it … and it’s completely open source,” King says. “We let people have the manuals, develop their own bio fence project, and run with it. And the interesting thing is it’s really working everywhere.”

However, the method works for small land areas only. It is also threatened by drought – which is not conducive for bees.
