best new cruise ships 2021

Sharing is caring!

Who else wants to put 2020 behind us, and look forward to a better year for cruising (and everything else) in 2021? If there’s any silver lining, it’s that we now have several new cruise ships to book, which will be ready for sailing in 2021.

In this post, we’ll go over the the 10 best new cruise ships for 2021, and their features. I’ll share a few insider tips so you can know which cruise ships are best for you, whether you’re a traditionalist, cruising with kids , or looking for a sophisticated adult vacation.

This year’s new cruise ships have something for everyone!

Most Exciting New Cruise Ships for 2021

1. carnival mardi gras.

carnival mardi gras new cruise ship 2021

Let’s get started with one of the most anticipated ships of 2021!

I am not overselling the newest Carnival cruise ship, the Carnival Mardi Gras. At 180,000 tons, it’s Carnival’s largest cruise ship and the 7th largest cruise ship in the world.

However, beyond it’s size, it’s pretty groundbreaking and has a number of firsts for both Carnival and for the cruise industry.

  • The Carnival Mardi Gras has the first rollercoaster at sea, called the Bolt Seacoaster. If you’re into innovations and thrill seeking, how cool is that?!
  • It runs on an LNG (liquefied natural gas) propulsion system, a “green technology”, which is better for the environment.
  • The Mardi Gras has several amazing new restaurants including Emeril’s Bistro (extra) and Big Chicken (yum! – included)

Like many new cruise ships, the Carninal Mardi Gras was delayed a couple of times due to circumstances in 2020.

However it is finally here! In late December 2020 the Meyer Turku shipyard in Finland handed the new build over to Carnival Cruises in a Virtual Ceremony. The Mardi Gras is now scheduled for it’s inaugural sailing on April 24, 2021

Best for: Families, kids of all ages, thrill seekers, theme park aficionados, Carnival loyalists

2. Royal Caribbean Odyssey of the Seas

Odyssey of the Seas new cruise ship 2021

Much like Carnival Mardi Gras, Royal Caribbean’s Odyssey of the Seas has experienced delays in construction. However, progress is being made and the ship is due to be delivered to Royal Caribbean in Spring 2021.

The Odyssey of the Seas is the second Quantum Ultra Class ship for the cruise line. At 169,000 tons, the cruise ship will have some amazing features including the North Star, the Sky Pad, the Sea Plex with bumper cars and a roller skating rink. Royal Caribbean never disappointa, and always has the coolest things to do on a cruise ship !

In addition to the great things to do on this family friendly ship, there are several of Royal Caribbean’s restaurants and bars, including a favorite “Lime & Coc0nuts”.

Best for: Families, kids of all ages, active cruisers, multi-generational travel, Royal Caribbean fans

3. Enchanted Princess

Enchanted Princess new cruise ship 2021

The Enchanted Princess was delivered in late 2020, however passengers won’t have a chance to sail until 2021, making this ship a “new one” for Princess fans to enjoy in 2021.

A Royal Class ship, at 160,000 tons the Enchanted Princess boasts some newer features including the infinity aft pool and the stunning, spacious Sky Suites.

This Princess ship has many of the favorite signature features of Princess fleet, including the beautiful 3 deck Piazza, the Sanctuary, Movies Under the Stars, and exclusive theatrical performances.

Finally, like other Princess Cruises ships, Enchanted Princess has Ocean Medallion. Ocean Medallion now has even more features, making the contactless technology even more convenient for cruise passengers in 2021.

Suggested:  21 Things You Need to Know About Ocean Medallion

Best for:  Those looking for a relaxing and fun vacation, romantics, traditionalists, travel minded, multi-generational travel, Loyal Princess cruisers

4. Discovery Princess

Discovery Princess new cruise ship 2021

With much of the same features as Enchanted Princess, Discovery Princess is due to come out in late 2021. The 6th ship in Princess’ Royal Class, the Discovery Princess combines the best of a modern cruise ship with the traditions of classic cruising so many still enjoy.

The Discovery Princess will sail both in Europe and later in the Caribbean.

Like Enchanted Princess, Discovery Princess has the amazing touchless technology Ocean Medallion .

Best for:  Those looking for a relaxing and fun vacation, traditionalists, travel minded, multi-generational travel, Loyal Princess cruisers

5. MSC Virtuosa

msc virtuosa new cruise ship 2021

MSC Virtuosa is not only a stunning ship, but it’s one of the most environmentally friendly and energy efficient ships at sea. At 177,000 tons, Virtuosa is the second Meraviglia Plus Class ship and due out in April 2021.

Interesting features to note – the MSC Virtuosa has an Underwater Radiated Noise system reducing impact on large-size marine mammals, an advanced purification systemfor the cleanest waste water and reduced CO2 emissions, due to the latest technology.

While these are “features” we don’t see, as passengers, they’re very important and meaningful to the environment and the future of cruising.

Ship features we love – the MSC Virtuosa has a stunning Galleria Promenade along the interior of the ship, featuring the longest LED Dome at Sea. The pools and pool areas look both modern and luxurious, like a luxury resort.

Of  course, for those that want a little more “luxury” there is the exclusive Yacht Club experience ( a ship within a ship concept).

Families and kids will love the LEGO themed cabins, in addition to the LEGO themed activities in the kids club. There’s also an amazing indoor amusement park and outdoor water park for the kids.

MSC virtuosa Circque de Soleil new cruise ship 2021

As for entertainment, the MSC Virtuosa will WOW passengers with it’s Cirque de Soleil performances.

MSC has also been cruising safely and successfully in the Mediterranean since the summer 2020. Even with health and safety protocols, these sailings have received rave reviews from passengers. MSC uses the MSC for Me touchless wristband technology.

Best for: Forward thinking cruisers, International cruisers, environmentally minded cruisers, family cruisers, MSC Fans

6. Virgin Voyages Scarlet Lady

The new cruise line, Virgin Voyages, was due to have it’s Inaugural sailing of the Scarlet Lady in 2020, but like others, has been delayed. Scarlet Lady will now debut in May 2021.

Virgin Voyages is shaking things up by doing things very differently. The adult only cruise line offers a non traditional cruise experience. While not for everyone, there are some things you may really like.

Virgin Voyages is mostly inclusive, meaning all 20 restaurants, basic drinks plus soda and specialty coffees and gratuities are all included with your price. Expect the ship to be beautiful, modern and a bit edgy.

If this doesn’t sound very different so far, Virgin’s Scarlet Lady features the first and only tattoo parlour at sea.

Best for: Non-traditional cruisers, young adults, those that want to try something different

7. Celebrity Apex

Celebrity Apex best new cruise ship 2021

At approximately 130,000 tons, Celebrity’s second Edge class ship, Apex, bucks the trend of larger ship builds common to most mainstream cruise lines. Yet, it has so many unique features, while retaining the quality, service and attention to detail

Celebrity Apex was delivered to Celebrity Cruises in 2020, but will be new for passengers in 2021.

The Apex looks and feels upscale and sophisticated, yet also modern and innovative. Some of best and most interesting elements include:

  • Infinite Verandas (warning – some people love them and others prefer traditional verandas).
  • Stunning resort style pool with martini shaped hot tubs
  • Magic Carpet, an outdoor bar and restaurant that is on that rises along the side of the ship, also serving as a platform for tendering at cruise ports of call
  • Eden – a 3 story gorgeous venue featuring a restaurant & bar, with hand crafted cocktails and unique theatrical performances

If you enjoy the classic Celebrity venues like Cafe Al Bacio , not to worry. Thankfully, the Edge Class ships still have this popular specialty coffee shop!

Also NEW for Celebrity when cruises resume is the Always Included program. With every Celebrity Cruise booking, you’ll receive drinks, wifi and gratuities.

You can read more about Celebrity’s Always Included and exactly how it works here:  Celebrity Cruises Always Included; Everything You Need to Know

Best for: Experienced cruisers, new cruisers, cruisers who want a relaxing and fun experience, those who enjoy an all inclusive experience, foodies, Celebrity fans

8. Holland America MS Rotterdam

For those that long for the days of traditional cruising and enjoy a mid size ship, Holland America’s New MS Rotterdam is very exciting. At just over 99,800 tons, the MS Rotterdam is the 3rd Pinnacle Class ship for HAL.

In addition to all you’d expect from Holland America; wonderful dining, service and beautifully appointed staterooms, MS Rotterdam also offers innovative entertainment.

The MS Rotterdam has a focus on music, “a soundtrack of discovery”, in much of the onboard venues and entertainment. Enjoy the B.B. King’s Blues Club, BBC Earth in Concert, the World Stage and seeing shows performed on the Lincoln Center Stage. If you love some classic rock, there’s the Rolling Stone Rock Room for great live music.

Best for: Traditional cruisers, cruisers who enjoy quiet activities, foodies, classic music fans, HAL loyalists

9. Viking Venus

Viking VENUS new cruise ship 2021

Viking Venus is the smallest of the new ocean going cruise ships due out in 2021. At 47,842 tons, Viking Venus is almost identical to it’s sister ships and boasts a gorgeous Scandanavian decor and influence.

Viking Ocean is inclusive cruise experience. Specialty restaurants are  included, as is beer, wine and soft drinks with lunch and dinner. Guests also receive free Wi-Fi a free shore excursion in each port of call. Spa access is included as well, featuring a hydrotherapy pool, saunas, thermal loungers, and a snow room.

Viking Venus provides a comfortable luxury cruise experience, with an all balcony cruise ship. The ship boasts beautiful and delicious food venues, 2 pool areas (one with a retractable roof), and well appointed veranda cabins and suites.

Different from most other ocean going cruise ships, Viking Venus does not have a casino and offers live music and more “low key” entertainment rather than Vegas style shows.

Best for: Luxury cruisers, destination driven cruisers, the “non-cruiser”, the cerebral cruiser, foodies, Viking repeat cruisers

10. MSC Seashore

msc seashore best new cruise ship 2021

At 169,380 tons, the MSC Seashore will be larger than sister ships MSC Seaside and Seaview and feature many innovations that cruise passengers will appreciate. It is due to arrive in August 2021.

  • A stunning redesigned aft pool
  • A larger indoor pool with retractable roof
  • A more expansive Yacht Club – a ship within a ship concept
  • More hot tubs
  • Outdoor seating and al fresco dining on Deck 8

Top New Cruise Ships Launching in 2022

  • Meet The Blondes

Ritz Carlton Evrima

2020 was the year that cruising stood still. This time last year, ships were docked in ports around the world, instructed to lie low and weather the storm while the Covid-19 pandemic grounded the travel industry globally. New cruise ships were the last thing on anybody’s mind.

Tragically, many ships are still in the same place as they were a year ago, with only a skeleton crew on board. Those are the ones that survived, of course, as a number of our most loved ships and lines didn’t even make it to 2021.

But the good news is that this year is going to be epic for new launches and the sheer variety of newness on offer – 2020 was meant to welcome many new cruise ships, all of which were stalled due to the pandemic.

Of course, this all means that when it comes to booking that dream cruise, there’s going to be even more choice than ever.

From Golden Horizon’s traditional tall sails to the exclusivity of Evrima (pictured above), no matter what your taste or budget, there really is something to suit you and your travelling companions.

Want to find out more about what’s on the horizon? Let’s get to it!

New ships: ocean

New cruise ships are really packing a punch this year, starting with Atlas Ocean Voyages which will launch the 196-guest World Navigator in July 2021. Built for modern explorers, the luxury ship will sail the Holy Land, the Black, Mediterranean and Caribbean Seas, South America and Antarctica during its inaugural year . The all-inclusive ‘All The Way’ cruise option includes complimentary round-trip air travel, a shore excursion at every port, gratuities, premium wine and spirits, Wi-Fi, regionally inspired gourmet dining, and welcome champagne.

With capacity for 6,500 guests, Carnival’s new ‘fun ship’ Mardi Gras has the world’s first rollercoaster at sea, Bolt. If that’s not enough for thrill-seekers, there is also a  suspended rope course and water park. Set to sail in May 2021, it’s one of the first ships to be powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG), making it arguably one of the greenest ships in North America.

Sister to Celebrity Edge , Celebrity Cruises’   Celebrity Apex was due to launch in 2020 but is now scheduled to launch in Greece on 19 June. You’ll find some familiar Edge series features on board ,  including the Magic Carpet moving platform, 918 Infinite Balcony cabins, some stunning suites (12 per cent of accomodation to be precise), the interactive Le Petit Chef and Fine Cut Steakhouse restaurants, plus those fabulous martini glass hot tubs on the pool deck. Celebrity Apex  will sail with all crew and guests above the age of 18 vaccinated against Covid-19 , and those under the age of 18 with negative PCR test results.

Fred Olsen is really going for it this year with not one but two 690-cabin ships – Borealis , which launches in July in Liverpool, and Bolette which launches in August in Dover. Both will offer m ore space, o riginal artwork and premium décor, a n all-weather swimming pool with retractable roof, a wide choice of restaurants, lounges and bars, m ore balcony cabins and suites, a classic two-tiered theatre, and  spa facilities including a thermal suite and hydrotherapy pool.

Tradewind Voyages Golden Horizon

Golden Horizon’s beauty lies in its traditional styling

Holland America’s Rotterdam is a 2,668 passenger ship and the third in the Pinnacle class fleet. Launching on 30 July in Europe before embarking on transatlantic voyages in the autumn, music is said to be front and centre of the cruise experience, with live music venues including the Rolling Stone Rock Room and B.B. King’s Blues Club. Guests can also indulge in 11 dining experiences, from pizza to seafood, as well as French, Asian, and Italian eateries.

The sister ship of MSC Grandiosa , the 19-deck, five pool MSC Virtuosa will come into service from 20 May and is set to sail around the British isles.   Virtuosa is set to become one of the most environmentally-conscious ships at sea , and is the first cruise ship in the world to receive a notation in recognition of its ability to mitigate and manage infectious disease risk. On board facilities are first-class; there’s even the world’s first humanoid robotic bartender at sea.

The launch of P&O Iona  has been delayed since 2020, but its now on track to launch in time for summer from Southampton. The LNG powered, 5,200 guest ship will be a foodies paradise, featuring 30 bars and restaurants including the world’s first gin distillery at sea, new menus by Marco Pierre White, and the “best burger at sea.” Iona  is also set to be home to exclusive new restaurants including The Keel and Cow gastropub and The Glass House, serving a tapas menu designed by Spanish chef José Pizarro. The Chef’s Table is also new and developed by Marco Pierre White and Eric Lanlard. Such is its popularity, the first chance you’ll get to sail on the ship is August 2020.

Royal Caribbean Odyssey of the Seas

You’ll never be bored on Royal Caribbean’s Odyssey of the Seas

Evrima, the first of three yachts from Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection , is one of the most hyped launches in the luxury travel sphere – and with good reason. Launching on 10 November in the Caribbean, the 298-guest ship will stop at both intimate and signature destinations, while excursions have been thematically crafted so guests can pick a category that fits their interests and activity levels. With one of the highest space ratios at sea, suites will boast floor-to-ceiling windows and greater ceiling heights. Guests can try watersports from the yacht’s marina, a curated menu of spa treatments, and the yacht’s signature restaurant, S.E.A., designed by Michelin-starred chef Sven Elverfeld of The Ritz-Carlton, Wolfsburg.

New cruise ships don’t get much more family-friendly than this: launching in May, Royal Caribbean’s 4,198-guest Odyssey of the Seas will be the first Quantum Ultra Class ship to homeport in Israel. Featuring an action-packed top deck, firsts for the line include SeaPlex , the largest activity centre at sea ; a reimagined Adventure Ocean kids programme; the  Social180  teen lounge with gaming consoles, music, movies and an outdoor wraparound deck with ocean views; and Giovanni’s Italian Kitchen & Wine Bar , which offers rustic Italian dishes.

Sister ship to Spirit of Discovery , Saga’s Spirit of Adventure was originally planned to enter service in 2020 but will now launch on 26 July 2021. The purpose-built boutique ship has 554 all balcony cabins and can accommodate 999 passengers. It will also feature a 500 sq metre spa, The Lido outdoor pool, The Playhouse, a 444-seat theatre and a large library. According to the line, “the interior design is bold and striking.  Yet again we have risen to the challenge set us by our guests. They have told us that life for them is not ‘beige’ and they want to see something that showcases the best of British contemporary design.”

Another ship originally planned to launch in 2020, Silversea’s 596-guest Silver Moon will now set sail in June. Featuring the small-ship intimacy and spacious all-suite accommodation that’s the hallmark of the Silversea experience, a number of public spaces have been refreshed – the Dolce Vita lounge, the Connoisseur’s Corner, the Pool Deck, and the Spa and Fitness Centre have each undergone comprehensive redesigns. But perhaps most exciting is the new S.A.L.T. ecosystem, which will enable travellers to delve deeper into destinations through the lens of food and drink, both on board and ashore. Also on the horizon is Silver Dawn , which is scheduled to launch in November.

Silversea Silver Moon

Lap of luxury: live the dream on Silver Moon

Another new cruise kid on the block, Tradewind Voyages’ Golden Horizon   is perfect for those seeking something a little bit different. Launching in July 2021 with an ex-UK programme, the luxury square-rigged sailing vessel features 140 cabins which face out to sea – the ship will use the wind and currents to follow the sun, using less power in the process. On board, you’ll find outstanding local food, an enrichment and wellbeing programme, three swimming pools, five bars, a marina platform with watersports equipment, a library and live music.

Viking’s seventh ocean ship, the 930-guest, all balcony Viking Venus is on track to debut in May, and will spend its maiden season sailing in the Mediterranean and Northern Europe. Featuring that unmistakeable Scandi chic decor, the ships’ blueprint will be familiar to Viking fans, with a number of complimentary dining venues, plus Mamsen’s, the Explorer’s Lounge, The Chef’s Table, a first-class spa and thermal suite, and that gorgeous signature infinity pool at the aft of the ship.

A number of new cruise ships have shaken things up when it comes to design, and none more so than this one. With an eye on the new to cruise market, Virgin Voyages’ first ship, the all-inclusive, 2,770 passenger Scarlet Lady was meant to launch last year – we attended the UK media launch event in a windy Dover last February – but has been delayed a number of times and is now scheduled to sail in September 2021. The lines’ second ship, Valiant Lady , is also launching this November, and will  join  Scarlet Lady  in the Caribbean, sailing from their new home terminal in Miami.

New ships: river

APT Travelmarvel ship

APT’s Travelmarvel ships are sleek and spacious

AmaWaterways  is launching not one, not two, but three luxury river ships this year – at the moment you can pencil in July for the two european ships, although the line states that ‘ we are reviewing the status of each river cruise approximately 45 days before departure, based on local and international protocols regarding safe travel .’ The 156-guest AmaLucia and AmaSiena will sail on the Rhine, Danube, Main and Moselle rivers and offer connecting staterooms, generous personal space, luxury amenities and award-winning dining. With 10 standard staterooms, 24 balcony suites and a wealth of amenities, the 68-guest AmaDahlia launches in autumn 2021, and will sail on the Nile river.

Three’s certainly not a crowd in river cruising terms, as APT is also launching three Travelmarvel Contemporary ships, Capella, Polaris and Vega this year – one will set sail in June with classical performer Aled Jones on board. Custom built for Europe’s waterways, the spacious ships have a two-and-a-half deck design and floor-to-ceiling windows. There are plenty of drinking and dining options, a rooftop garden and bar, and heated whirlpool.

Sailing in June, Avalon Waterways’ Avalon View is the newest addition to the lines’ fleet of Suite Ships. Offering the widest views on Europe’s waterways, passengers can choose from two full decks of Panorama Suites (30 per cent larger than the industry standard), featuring wall-to-wall and floor-to-ceiling panoramic windows that transform the living space into a open-air balcony. There’s also a fitness centre, an adventure centre, and Sky Deck with a whirlpool, lots of shade and deck games.

In May 2021, Saga launches its first purpose-built river ship Spirit of the Rhine. With a passenger capacity of 190, features include a panoramic lounge and bar, a library, fitness area, and an expansive, shaded sun deck with hot tub and al fresco barbecue. Cabins are spacious, with an   average floor plan of 17 square metres. Renowned chef Nick Nairn will bring his famous culinary style to the à la carte restaurant aboard the ship, creating an exclusive signature dish.

TUI River Cruises is launching three new cruise ships this year – Isla, Maya and Skyla.  The first sailing on TUI Skyla will be 28 June 2021 sailing from Budapest, while TUI Maya’s first sailing will depart on 2 July, also sailing from Budapest. The multi-million-pound ships will offer the choice of two restaurants complete with floor-to-ceiling views, two bars, the Observatory with glass sliding doors opening out to the terrace, and the Club Lounge, a coffee and cocktail bar with a digital fireplace and signature scent.   There are seven cabin types per ship, with three cabins for solo travellers. There are also 36 suites across the three ships, featuring walk in wardobes, double French balconies and spacious bathrooms.

Luxury river cruise line Uniworld will celebrate two new ‘Super Ships’ this year. Debuting in May, São Gabriel will sail the Douro river in Portugal. Accomodating 100 passengers, the three-deck vessel will offer nearly an entire deck of suites, four of which will measure more than 300 square feet. There will also be a restaurant offering regional specialities, a lounge bar, spa, fitness room and sun deck with pool. The elegant 126-guest La Venezia  will sail the Venice Lagoon and Po River in Italy from July, and features designer touches including fine Fortuny fabrics, Murano glass and gilded accents that pay homage to Venetian aesthetics of the early 20th century.

More Nile adventures are to be had on Viking’s new ship Osiris – this will be Viking’s second ship in Egypt. Sailing from September and smaller than Viking’s usual river ships with just 41 staterooms (82 guests), the state-of-the-art ship has been specifically built to navigate the Nile, and is designed in Viking’s signature clean, elegant Scandinavian style. There’s a pool and sundeck, Aquavit Terrace & Lounge with an indoor/outdoor design, library and restaurant with floor-to-ceiling windows.

You’re looking at Cruise Critic’s Best New Cruise Ship of 2021…

We’re absolutely thrilled to announce that we’ve been awarded cruise critic’s editors’ pick for best new cruise ship in 2021.

We’re absolutely thrilled to announce that we’ve been awarded Cruise Critic’s Editors’ Pick for Best New Cruise Ship in 2021! As the world’s leading cruise reviews site and online cruise community, it’s truly an honor for us — especially in our very first year at sea as a brand — to be recognized by Cruise Critic’s international team of editors in the 13th annual awards.

“Our winners this year represent innovation and evolution in the cruise industry,” Cruise Critic Editor-in-Chief Colleen McDaniel said. “In a field that was surprisingly crowded, with a number of great new ships debuting this year, Scarlet Lady stood out for bringing new concepts to sea designed to give guests witty and smart features and options. We loved Scarlet Lady’s design-forward take on bringing even more fun to cruising.”

While we’ve known and loved Scarlet Lady far before the world was introduced to her, it’s been unbelievably exciting to have the greater public and experts in the industry experience her, understand her, and revel in all her unique glory. As a brand new company, and after a tough 18 months that had everyone in the industry questioning what’s next, it’s not lost on us how special this award is. We got into sea travel with the intention of revolutionizing it — but we never expected that the need for that transformative experience would come at such a pivotal time, and we’re grateful that both Cruise Critic and our Sailors have felt that.

In fact, Cruise Critic noted, “We also felt that by pushing through boundaries and past naysayers, Scarlet Lady had the potential to transform not just a cruise line but also provide excitement for the industry overall. After a year of setbacks, Scarlet Lady showed us that cruising continues to be a form of travel that's ever-evolving, with plenty of surprises along the way.”

We’re humbled by the award, and we’re deeply proud of our Crew, on board and shoreside, for building a ship and creating an experience that has caught the attention of critics and continues to captivate the hearts of the Sailors who come aboard her. A ship is only as good as its Sailors, and sure, we might be biased, but we happen to believe we have the very best ones joining us on board.

Thank you for all the love. We can’t wait to show Scarlet Lady to those who haven’t had the chance to experience her yet, and we look forward to seeing the familiar, sea-blazing faces back on board with us again soon.

The 10 most exciting new river cruise ships of 2021

Gene Sloan

It's going to be a big year for fans of new river cruise ships.

The big river lines that cater to North Americans plan to launch more than a dozen new vessels across the United States, Europe and Asia in 2021 as they get back into expansion mode.

Many of the new river vessels on the way originally were scheduled to debut in 2020. Their arrivals were put on hold after the cruise industry shut down in March due to the coronavirus pandemic. But there also are new river ships coming that originally were ordered for 2021.

The result is that 2021 will see more new river ships debuting than anyone expected just a year ago.

For more cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's new cruise newsletter.

New river ships in Europe, North America, Asia

As is typically the case, Europe will be at the center of the growth. River cruise giant Viking alone is adding four new ships in the region. AmaWaterways, Avalon Waterways, Emerald Waterways, Uniworld and Tauck have new Europe river ships coming, too.

Debut vessels in other parts of the world include everything from a notable paddlewheeler for the Mississippi River to a first-of-its-kind new build for the Nile in Egypt .

River lines aren't alone in adding a profusion of new vessels to the market this year. This also will be a significant year for new ocean-going ships (see our picks for the most notable newcomers).

Read on for a list of the 10 new river ships we're most excited to book.

American Countess (American Queen Steamboat Company)

American Countess will have a classic Mississippi riverboat look. Image courtesy of American Queen Steamboat Company.

Toot the whistle horn! Gather 'round the calliope! A new Mississippi paddlewheeler is on the way. Initially scheduled to debut in 2020 but delayed due to the new coronavirus, the 245-passenger American Countess will begin sailing between New Orleans and Memphis in the spring. Eventually, it will operate as far north as Red Wing, Minnesota.

Like the two American Queen vessels currently on the Mississippi — American Queen and American Duchess — American Countess will be a whitewashed, wedding cake-like confection with red trim powered by a great, big paddle wheel on its back. Four decks high and 361 feet long, it'll also have such American Queen riverboat signatures as a soaring Grand Lobby, an elegant dining room with river views, a theater and a forward-facing Chart Room where "riverlorians" will regale passengers with river stories .

But American Countess won't be a carbon copy of the earlier vessels. In one notable twist, it'll have sleeker, more modern cabins than its predecessors. There will be four categories of cabins in all, two of which come with balconies.

The details: American Countess will sail a mix of six- to 15-night trips on the Mississippi, Ohio, Tennessee and Cumberland rivers. Fares start at $1,999 per person, not including taxes and fees. For information, call 833-598-0119 or visit americanqueensteamboatcompany.com .

American Melody (American Cruise Lines)

newest cruise ships 2021

Also adding a new vessel on the Mississippi in 2021 -- two, actually -- is fast-growing American Cruise Lines. But unlike American Queen Steamboat's new American Countess, the new American Cruise Lines boats -- American Jazz and American Melody -- won't be traditional paddlewheelers with an old-fashioned riverboat decor.

Instead, they'll be sleek and modern. Both the vessels will be part of American Cruise Lines' new "modern series" of vessels that hold fewer than 190 passengers and began debuting in 2018. The series already has two vessels: American Song and American Harmony.

Of the two new vessels, perhaps the most notable is American Melody, which will be the first in the modern series with an elegant new interior designed by Miami-based Studio DADO -- a cruise ship design firm well-known for its stylish creations.

Like its sisters, American Melody will feature interior spaces with lots of panoramic views, including a soaring glass atrium at its center; a grand dining room and outdoor cafe; a yoga, wellness and fitness room; and multiple lounges. As is typical for American Cruise Lines ships, it'll offer standard cabins measuring a generous 350 square feet and some cabins as big as 650 square feet. Even the smallest cabins, designed for solo travelers, will measure 250 square feet and feature full-size bathrooms, roomy closets and private balconies -- a rarity for a river ship.

The details: American Melody and American Jazz both will sail a mix of different Mississippi River itineraries (American Cruise Lines offers 10 different routes), including roundtrip voyages from New Orleans and brand new Music Cities voyages between Nashville and Memphis. Fares for weeklong trips start at $4,605 per person, not including taxes and fees. For information, call 800-814-6880 or visit americancruiselines.com .

Avalon View (Avalon Waterways)

newest cruise ships 2021

Avalon Waterways' latest ship in Europe won't have a radically different look than other recent additions to the Avalon fleet. In fact, the design of the 166-passenger Avalon View will be almost identical to the design of the last dozen or so Avalon vessels to debut. But the design is so good, Avalon View is an obvious choice for any list of the most exciting new river ships.

Scheduled to sail on the Rhine, Main and Danube rivers, Avalon View is the latest of Avalon's "suite ships," that began arriving in 2011. The vessels feature particularly spacious (and brilliantly laid out) cabins known as Panorama Suites on two of three cabin decks. The highlight of the rooms are sweeping, floor-to-ceiling window walls. Offering stunning views, these walls slide open seven feet to create a balcony-like effect (don't worry: There are permanent glass panels along the lower part of the walls so you don't fall out).

In a twist from what's been typical on Europe-based river ships, the beds in Panorama Suites face the water and not an interior wall.

Avalon View's public spaces will include a restaurant, lounge with bar, secondary lounge, fitness room and spacious sun deck. With its addition, Avalon will have 14 of the suite ships in Europe.

The details: Avalon View will operate three- to 14-night sailings on the Rhine, Main and Danube rivers. Fares start at $724 per person, not including taxes and fees. Call 877-797-8791 or visit avalonwaterways.com for more information.

S.S. São Gabriel (Uniworld Boutique River Cruise Collection)

Nearly the entire top deck of the SS Sao Gabriel will be suites. Image courtesy of Uniworld.

No doubt about it, river cruising on the Douro River in Portugal has been hot in recent years — so hot the relatively minor European waterway is drawing two major new vessels this year.

Upscale river line Uniworld's S.S. São Gabriel will be the first of the two ships to debut, and it's promising to be a charmer. Built for just 100 passengers, the three-deck-high vessel will boast elegant decor with local touches like handmade glazed Portuguese tiles. It'll also have menus infused with regional specialties such as chorizo and octopus carpaccio.

Known for its ultra-attentive service, California-based Uniworld has operated voyages on the Douro before. But S.S. São Gabriel will be an upgrade from the line's former ship on the river, Queen Isabel. Nearly the entire top deck of the vessel will be devoted to lavish suites, four of which will measure more than 300 square feet. All come with butler service.

Other features will include a restaurant, lounge with a bar, spa, fitness room and a sun deck with a pool — a relative rarity on river ships.

The details: S.S. São Gabriel will operate seven-night sailings out of Porto, Portugal, with stops in such river towns as Regua and Pinhão. Fares start at $3,699 per person, not including taxes and fees. For information, call 800-349-7397 or visit uniworld.com .

Andorinha (Tauck)

Andorinha will be upscale tour operator Tauck's first vessel on the Douro River. Image courtesy of Tauck.

The second of the two new ships coming to Portugal's Douro River this year is Andorinha, which is — notably —the first Tauck vessel ever on the river. Designed for just 84 passengers, it'll bring Tauck's signature highly-inclusive, also incredibly high-touch type of cruising to the Douro for the first time.

Like other Tauck river ships, Andorinha will have spacious, elegantly appointed cabins (some measuring 300 square feet) and multiple restaurants. It'll also sail with three Tauck Director guides who accompany every tour outing along with local guides, one of the line's key differentiators .

As is typical for Douro vessels, Andorinha will be just two decks high and relatively short for a river ship at 263 feet long. Bridge heights and lock sizes on the Douro limit how big river ships can be.

Andorinha will operate three itineraries on the Douro, including what's being billed as the first family-focused routing on the river. Tauck was an early pioneer of family-focused river cruise departures and continues to be a leader in the niche.

The details: Andorinha's main seven-night Douro River itinerary, out of Porto, Portugal, will include an overnight in Porto and stops at several river towns including Peso da Régua and Pinhão. Activities will include walking tours of the towns, tours of vineyards and wine estates, visits to historic sites and scenic cycling. Fares start at $4,390 per person, including taxes and fees. For information visit tauck.com or call 800-788-7885.

Viking Skaga (Viking)

Viking Radgrid and three sister vessels will be small enough to travel into the heart of Paris. Image courtesy of Viking.

River cruise giant Viking is known for operating a fleet of almost identical vessels in Europe. If you've seen one Viking river ship in Europe, you've seem them all. But the line is tinkering with the formula a tad with Viking Skaga, which will debut on the River Seine in the spring.

Along with three more sister ships that will begin service on the French waterway in 2021, Viking Skaga will be just 410 feet long, about 33 feet shorter than the typical Viking river ship. The smaller size will allow it to travel all the way into the heart of Paris . In the small world of Seine cruises, that's a big deal (bigger ships on the Seine have to dock as far as 11 miles away).

Viking Skaga also will have fewer cabins than the typical Viking ship — just 84 instead of 95. But it'll still have the wide range of cabin types (including multiroom suites) that's a Viking signature. Cruisers will also recognize the same streamlined Scandinavian design that's a hallmark of the brand. Public spaces will include an expansive sun deck, a restaurant, a lounge with a bar, a boutique and a library.

The details: Viking Skaga and its sisters will operate seven-night Seine cruises out of Paris that include day stops in La Roche Guyon (for an excursion to Claude Monet's home in Giverny) and Les Andelys. There's also an overnight stay in Rouen, allowing for a day trip to the Normandy beaches. The trip begins and ends with overnight stays in Paris. Fares start at $1,999 per person, not including taxes and fees. Call 800-304-9616 or visit viking.com for more information.

AmaSiena and AmaLucia (AmaWaterways)

newest cruise ships 2021

These two new 156-passenger ships from California-based AmaWaterways will be similar to three other AmaWaterways vessels that have debuted since 2017.

Like their three earlier sisters (AmaMora, AmaLea and AmaKristina), AmaSiena and AmaLucia will offer cabins and suites with the line's signature twin balcony concept (both a walk-out balcony and a French balcony along the outer-facing wall). They'll also offer multiple dining venues and a heated pool with a swim-up bar — both AmaWaterways signatures.

In addition, as is typical for the line, both of the vessels will have a heavy focus on wellness. A designated Wellness Host on both of the ships will lead daily exercise classes and a lineup of active biking and hiking excursions.

The details: AmaSiena and AmaLucia will offer voyages in 2021 on the Danube, Main, Rhine and Moselle rivers, with rates for seven-night sailings starting at $2,799 per person, not including taxes and fees. For information, call 800-626-0126 or visit amawaterways.com .

Viking Osiris (Viking)

Viking Osiris will be Viking's second ship in Egypt. Image courtesy of Viking.

The Seine isn't the only river where Viking is expanding in 2021. It also has built a new ship for the Nile in Egypt — and it's quite the notable development.

Viking Osiris was being built from the ground up specifically to Viking's specifications. It's also owned and operated by Viking. That's unusual in a market where most Western lines charter local vessels for their trips.

Indeed, when it debuts this year, Viking Osiris will be the only ship on the Nile built, owned and operated by one of the big Western river cruise companies. In Viking's eyes (and ours, too), that means Viking will be able to offer the most consistent product on the river. Unlike some other Western companies operating in Egypt, Viking will have complete control of the experience.

Viking Osiris will be smaller than the typical Viking ship, with just 41 cabins. But it'll be a classic Viking vessel in other respects (the aforementioned Scandinavian design and distinct Viking-style included touring). If you've been on any of Viking's 60-plus river ships in Europe, you'll feel right at home.

Viking Osiris is joining Viking's 2-year-old, 52-passenger Viking Ra on the Nile. Viking Ra, too, is owned and operated by Viking. But it technically wasn't built by the line. Viking gutted and reconfigured an existing Nile ship to create it. Next year, Viking will launch a sister ship to Viking Osiris: Viking Aton .

The details: Viking's Egypt trips pair a three-night hotel stay in Cairo with a seven-night Nile cruise and include visits to such iconic Egypt sites as the Great Pyramids of Giza and the Valley of the Kings. Fares start at $5,599 per person, not including taxes and fees. For information, call 800-304-9616 or visit viking.com .

Emerald Luna (Emerald Waterways)

newest cruise ships 2021

Australia-based Emerald Waterways continues its expansion in Europe with its sixth "star-ship" built for the Rhine, Main and Danube rivers.

Like five previous sisters, the the 180-passenger Emerald Luna will have an interior that revolves around a chic, contemporary social space called the Horizon Bar & Lounge. It'll also offer a barbecue venue on its Sun Deck in addition to a main restaurant in its interior.

The Sun Deck also will boast a retractable glass roof that can open to let fresh air and light into a heated pool and lounge area below. The pool area can convert into a cinema.

With the addition of Emerald Luna, Emerald will have nine ships in all.

The details: Emerald Luna will operate four- to 14-night sailings on the Rhine, Main and Danube rivers. Fares start at $1,595 per person, including port charges but not taxes. Call 857-201-5204 or visit emeraldwaterways.com for more information.

Other newcomers

Cruisers also can look forward to other new river ships from both Uniworld, Viking and AmaWaterways.

In addition to a new vessel in Portugal, Uniworld is adding new ships on the Nile. The vessel originally was due to debut in 2020 but was delayed due to the new coronavirus.

Uniworld also is relaunching its Italy-based River Countess, which was struck and damaged in 2019 by an MSC Cruises ship while docked in Venice. River Countess underwent a complete redesign and has been renamed S.S. La Venezia.

In addition to new vessels on the Seine River in France and on the Nile, Viking also is adding a new vessel on the Mekong River in Asia called the Viking Saigon.

AmaWaterways has a third river ship debuting late in the year on the Nile. To be named AmaDahlia, it'll hold up to 68 passengers.

The impressive ship completed its first sailing in 2021 when it became the first ship of its class to sail from the United States. Odyssey of the Seas currently departs from Fort Lauderdale, Florida and other ports and offers a range of six-night and seven-night sailings throughout the Caribbean in the coming months.

Up to 4,198 guests can sail on the Odyssey of the Seas with double occupancy, and 1,612 crew members are on board to tend to their every need. The ship is approximately 1,138 feet long and is 167,704 gross tons.

The vessel will complete a 14-day transatlantic cruise in April and May of 2024, which begins in Fort Lauderdale and ends in Rome, Italy. From there, the vessel will offer Greek Islands cruises from Rome before moving back to Cape Liberty (New York), New Jersey in the fall of 2024. At that point, itineraries will include stops in Port Canaveral, Florida, Nassau in the Bahamas and Perfect Day at CocoCay.
  • Cabin types: Odyssey of the Seas offers interior staterooms, ocean view rooms and balcony staterooms. Guests can also book interior rooms with a virtual balcony that boasts a floor-to-ceiling virtual view of the outdoors. Over-the-top suites available on the Odyssey include an Owner's Loft Suite, a Royal Loft Suite, a Grand Loft Suite and more.

Guests can dine at seven included eateries including a main dining room, a bistro, a cafe and the main ship buffet. The best new cruises in the world: 2024 Hot List

By CNT Editors

It’s inevitable: every spring when we pull together the Hot List, our annual collection of the world’s best new hotels, restaurants, and cruise ships, a staffer remarks that this latest iteration has got to be the best one ever. After a year’s worth of travelling the globe – to stay the night at a converted farmhouse in the middle of an olive grove outside Marrakech or sail aboard a beloved cruise line’s inaugural Antarctic voyage – it’s easy to see why we get attached. But this year’s Hot List, our 28th edition, might really be the best one ever. It’s certainly our most diverse, featuring not only a hotel suite that was once Winston Churchill’s office, but also the world’s largest cruise ship and restaurants from Cape Town to Bali . We were surprised and inspired by this year’s honorees, and we know you will be too. These are the Hot List cruise winners for 2024.

Celebrity Ascent, Celebrity Cruises

Celebrity is a premium big-ship cruise brand, focusing on exquisite dining, cutting-edge amenities, Instagram-worthy public spaces chock-full of bespoke art pieces, and avant-garde onboard entertainment. The ship makes passengers feel, in a word, glamorous. Celebrity Ascent’s sumptuously designed interiors are flooded with natural light and evoke an air of playful sophistication that makes a week on board an escape worth cherishing. Passengers may find themselves longing to return for just one more succulent crab claw at Raw on 5, one more martini poured by bottle-spinning bartenders in the Martini Bar, or one more dazzling, acrobatic stage show, in the days following their farewells to this beautiful ship. From around £574 per person for a seven-night sailing. Scott Laird

Emerald Sakara, Emerald Cruises

Now with two oceangoing vessels joining Emerald’s more established fleet of nine river-dedicated “Star-Ships,” the decade-old cruise line is extending a brand built on unpretentious luxury to more corners of the world. Christened last August , the 100-guest superyacht, Sakara, is a near twin to Azzurra, which in 2022 ushered in a new era for Emerald by taking to the high seas. Sakara, like its sister, delightfully blurs the line between the luxury and ultra-luxury cruise categories, offering attentive service, gourmet cuisine, tasteful decor, and an eclectic slate of activities at a price point friendly to more budgets. The cherry on top with both superyachts is a slew of perks atypical of small-ship sailing, ranging from an impressively comprehensive spa to a marina platform well equipped for more fun in the sun. Despite having so much good stuff, each vessel is remarkably spacious. Getting a sense of being on a private yacht is easy like Sunday morning. Sakara is homeported in the Caribbean and the Mediterranean through at least March 2026; Azzurra, too, in addition to the Middle East, Kenya, and the Seychelles . Emerald’s river operations are based in Europe and Southeast Asia. (Note that a third ship, the Kaia, has just been announced by the cruise line; it debuts in April 2026, and, for all the early birds, it is now open for bookings.) From around £3,112. Explora I, Explora Journeys

With a showpiece lobby bar, upscale restaurants, and a sultry infinity pool, Explora Journeys' relaxed luxury-resort-at-sea vibe strikes the perfect balance on Explora I. Launched in August 2023, the all-inclusive ship is disarmingly beautiful. A sleek navy blue exterior cocoons 461 suites, all with deep balconies, walk-in closets, and marble bathrooms. There is free-flowing Champagne, 7,500 square feet of wellness space, and 18 drinking and dining venues. From Emporium Marketplace, with its decadent raw bar, to pan-Asian restaurant Sakura, the dining on Explora I is sensational. Marble & Co. Grill is an intimate steakhouse where ageing meats hang in temperature-controlled cabinets. At Anthology, the ship's only supplementary restaurant, guest chefs – such as Claude Le Tohic of San Francisco's O' by Claude Le Tohic – curate sublime tasting menus. There's more: The only Rolex boutique at sea, huge hot tubs, and a shore program that sees some land experiences developed in partnership with revered explorer Mike Horn. From around £564 per person per night. Kerry Spencer

Icon of the Seas, Royal Caribbean International

Aboard the Icon, you can really get lost. The behemoth is just plain big, with a capacity for nearly 8,000 when combining passengers and crew across 20 decks and 250,800 gross tons. Two and a half laps around the ship’s jogging track, a particular highlight onboard, and you’ve run a mile. So one can find themselves in need of a map – forgetting your sunscreen , for example, in your cabin is a bit of a chore depending on how far you’ve made it. But the abundance of things to do is also narcotic, and you feel a bit like a lotus-eater attempting to navigate it all while keeping your head. Amid the relentless entertainment, not to be missed are the top-notch performers present everywhere, from the Olympic-level aquatics show that you can watch from the windows of the speciality seafood restaurant should seating be elusive (it often is) to the cafeteria, where crewmembers dressed as food items sing songs reminding (commanding, actually, which is fabulous) passengers to wash their hands at sinks near the entrance. If you wish to enjoy the largest waterpark at sea, by the way, do what I did not and pack a swimsuit without zippers. From around £1,818 . Charlie Hobbs

MSC Euribia, MSC Cruises

Looking at a row of cruise ships in port, you'll spot MSC Euribia right away. She's covered bow to stern by an ocean-themed mural by German artist Alex Flämig that bears the hashtag #SaveTheSeas nodding to the MSC's dedication to sustainable cruising: the Italian cruise line aims to be net-zero by 2050. MSC Euribia brings it one step closer to that goal, as it's the fleet's greenest ship yet, operating on liquified natural gas (LNG) and running advanced water and waste treatment systems onboard. But enough with the technical details – this mega-ship is packed with activities and entertainment, with 10 restaurants, 21 bars, five pools, two performance venues, and a bevvy of family-friendly amenities, like an F1 simulator, a waterpark, and a bowling alley. More adult-oriented highlights include the MSC Aurea Spa, with a thermal suite outfitted with thalassotherapy pools, a salt cave, and a snow room, as well as the Helios Wine Maker bar for wine tastings. Itineraries from around £420. Stefanie Waldek

Norwegian Viva, Norwegian Cruise Line

The second entry in Norwegian Cruise Line’s new Prima Class, Viva is like an Irish twin of older sister Prima. There’s the same stateroom count at 1,586, done in pristine and pleasing neutrals, as well as familiarly tricked-out amenities like the zippy 1,400-foot go-kart racing track that undulates over-the-top decks. Importantly, the Ocean Walk, which my colleague Mercedes Bleth adored aboard the Prima, remains. But round two afforded the premier name in large-ship cruising a chance to tweak and perfect, with an influx of seating options both in the ship’s complimentary dining hall as well as on its myriad decks. Across from the signature “zero-waste” Metropolitan Bar, where yummy drinks are whipped up from the ship’s food waste (I particularly enjoy a buttery Croissant Mai-Tai, for which hardening pastries are boiled down into sweetening syrup; the same is done with banana peels) is an interactive piece of digital art 52 feet wide that sees butterflies flit beside passersby. Breezy class all around. From around £791. Charlie Hobbs

Oceania Vista, Oceania Cruises

Vista, Oceania’s first new ship in more than a decade and the first of its Allura Class, debuted with small but mighty upgrades to its previous ships: better stabilisers for a smoother sailing experience; stronger Wi-Fi; lighting and architecture designed to make the ship’s common spaces look and feel roomier; a resort-like pool deck; and balconies in every cabin. The real star of the show, though, is the food and beverage experience – Vista’s culinary program delivers on its promise of top-quality venues you’ll want to make the rounds at. New to the lineup are Ember, a steakhouse with decor straight out of Napa Valley , and Aquamar Kitchen, serving up lighter fare that doesn’t skimp on taste. Celebrate a birthday, an anniversary, or a just-because occasion with the Cellar Masters Wine Luncheon, a five-course meal and wine pairing. And don’t miss the elaborate sea day brunch, where towers of lobster, crab, and caviar await. Of course, the ship is just one destination. This year, Vista is splitting time between the Mediterranean and the Caribbean; next year, it will venture farther into Europe with ports of call like Istanbul , Stockholm, and Klaipeda, Lithuania. Its sister ship, Allura, sets sail in 2025. From around £2,182. Madison Flager

Scenic Eclipse II, Scenic Luxury Cruises and Tours

The eagerly awaited Scenic Eclipse II is the new and improved version of Scenic's first expedition vessel, Scenic Eclipse. Dubbed "discovery yachts" for their sleek look and top-tier service, the sisters are nearly identical, with most changes so subtle that most guests might not even notice them, such as the slight enlargement of the steam room in the spa. But a big difference can be found on deck 10, where a plunge pool with jets for simulated lap swimming has taken the place of two hot tubs – and there's a new Sky Bar up here. Otherwise, Scenic Eclipse II has the same beloved amenities of its sister, most notably 10 exceptional dining experiences, from a sushi bar to a French restaurant with an attached Champagne bar; a 5,920-square-foot spa; two helicopters; and a submersible. Capable of sailing all over the world, including the polar regions, Scenic Eclipse II has itineraries for every type of traveller. From around £6,025. Stefanie Waldek

Seabourn Pursuit, Seabourn Cruise Line

Pursuit is a small, “yacht-like” expedition ship with a distinct green exterior whose destinations range from Antarctica to warmer climes like the Kimberley in Australia. The decadent cabins, bigger than some standard hotel rooms, feel spacious and relaxing, complete with all the subtle touches that make you feel immediately at home. You can hang your evening attire in the walk-in closet and dry your wet swimwear – or damp Arctic expedition gear – in the built-in warming compartment; have sunrise breakfasts or sunset cocktails mixed at the in-room wet bar on your private balcony; and sleep in a plush, queen-sized bed. But what truly sets this cruise apart is the attentive and personable staff who quickly learn your name and personal preferences, providing VIP treatment throughout the journey. From around £8,729. Seven Seas Grandeur, Regent Seven Seas Cruises

Ports in the Caribbean, the Greek islands , and the Riviera might be the draw, but the all-inclusive luxury line Regent Seven Seas Cruises produces ships that have travellers looking forward to those days at sea, as its sixth offering, Grandeur, further proves. All of the 372 suites, which start at a roomy 307 square feet, are decorated in calming neutral blues and beige, and feature furnished balconies; most have L'Occitane bubbles for the marble tub. Quiet comfort can also be had in the Serene Spa & Wellness outdoor lounge area, following a massage on a quartz crystal bed that mimics the feel of warm sand. Cravings for a porterhouse or a vegetarian Salisbury steak can be sated by Prime 7, with other venues serving speciality pan-Asian cuisine, French fare, ample buffets, and Italian offerings. Mainstay Compass Rose has been reimagined as a light, airy space where diners breakfast under playfully elegant pillars that resemble crystal trees. Grandeur's whimsy extends to its reception area, where guests can check out Journey in Jewels, the Fabergé egg made specifically for the vessel, where it will remain for the rest of its jewelled ovoid days. The maximum number of 744 guests ensures unhurried service and uncrowded environs as you recover from a sunny day of swimming with Caribbean pigs. From around £3798. Alexandra Sanidad

Silver Nova, Silversea Cruises

A voyage on Silversea’s latest ship, Silver Nova, is one of taste and style. With expansive glass features throughout each of the 11 decks, and an ocean-facing saltwater swimming pool , the ship’s unique asymmetrical design leaves room for adults to run and play (with swank, of course). The Nova’s reimagined culinary experience, SALT (Sea and Land Taste), is the first large-scale, regional restaurant at sea, and acts as an invitation to guests to experience more than an excursion. While initially introduced on Silver Moon, the Nova’s SALT program includes SALT Lab by day: an intimate cooking class with highly acclaimed chefs and regional cuisine recipes inspired by the next destination. With one nightly seating, SALT Chef's Table offers an exclusive and creatively interactive dining experience. It’s all very intimate – as chefs showcase the art of their crafts firsthand, guests peek into a new culture and place before even disembarking. From around £2465. Jessica Chapel

An aerial of a cruise ship in a river.

Viking Aton, Viking River Cruises

In the style of all Viking ships, the Rottet Studio – designed Aton is intended for comfortable and thought-provoking exploration – just look to the book-filled shelves in the cabins, curated by London’s Heywood Hill library, and the revolving door of on-board lecturers (on my trip, an English curator spoke about the evolving depictions of Egypt in 1900s popular art). It should be no surprise that in a destination as rich and storied as Egypt ’s Nile, where the Aton is permanently based, the guides set apart what may read as a quintessential itinerary. On the Pharaohs & Pyramids journey, which takes travellers from the Valley of the Kings, where King Tut lies, to the Great Pyramid of Giza and well beyond over 12 days, esteemed Egyptologists oscillate from translating hieroglyphics on temple walls in real-time to shepherding travellers through modern night markets with endless fervour. On this ship it isn’t just what you see but how much you listen – and the team here, predominantly Egyptian, has much to say. These days, travellers crave perspective-altering experiences more than ever; get on the Aton, and you’ll get once-in-a-lifetime access (until that is, your next Aton sailing). From around £4849. Resilient Lady, Virgin Voyages

Stepping onto Resilient Lady feels a bit like heading to summer camp. The massive vessel is like a giant playground for adults, which is why it draws a fun-loving crowd. Theme night parties, a nostalgic arcade room, plenty of board games, and basketball courts are just a few of the seemingly limitless onboard activities. Compared with its sister ships, the newest Virgin Voyages addition includes upgraded onboard entertainment and exciting new ports of call like the Greek Islands, Bali, and Mumbai . Most of the shows on this specific ship are new to the line, such as Persephone, an interactive performance developed in collaboration with famed Brooklyn nightclub House of Yes, and Another Rose, an immersive dinner experience. Dining options are abundant on the ship – 20-plus to be exact – and all of them are included with every passenger ticket. Plus, you can’t miss out on a visit to the several different sauna experiences in the Thermal Suite inside the Redemption Spa. From around £1616 . Rachel Dube

World Voyager, Atlas Ocean Voyages

There are superbly comfortable spaces and floor-to-ceiling windows aplenty on World Voyager, the latest vessel from Atlas Ocean Voyages. On an Antarctica expedition, you might watch turquoise icebergs float by from the sauna or the spa’s relaxation room, with its heated loungers perfectly positioned in front of a wall of glass. Back in your cosy stateroom, Champagne and strawberries await, as do the views from a Juliet or walkout balcony. The look throughout the 100 cabins and public spaces is Scandinavian modern, thanks to blond woods, marble floors, plush carpets in geometric patterns, and curvaceous furniture draped in velvety fabrics. In the elegant dining room, the focus is on international cuisine with a farm-to-table slant – think mushroom risotto and smoked duck with chargrilled vegetables. Meanwhile, the multipage cocktail menu beckons guests to a pair of spacious lounges. Blending yacht-style elegance and boutique-resort intimacy, this is a ship where you can make new friends easily but also retreat to a favourite spot to enjoy high tea in peaceful solitude while awaiting details from the crew on the adventures that lie ahead. From around £1495. Celeste Moure

Royal Caribbean is introducing another massive cruise ship, Utopia of the Seas, which will soon become the second largest cruise ship worldwide, surpassed only by Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas. It is part of Royal Caribbean’s Oasis class of ships featuring an impressive array of amenities, such as an indoor ice skating rink, a zip line, a FlowRider surf simulator, a rock climbing wall, a water park, a 259 ft Ultimate Abyss waterslide, an aqua theater, and neighborhoods filled with shops, restaurants, and bars. Cruise passengers will be entertained with Broadway-caliber shows.

Utopia of the Seas will sail on short getaway itineraries from Port Canaveral (Orland), offering 3-night weekend and 4-night weekday itineraries to the Bahamas and Royal Caribbean’s private island, Perfect Day at CocoCay. Check the prices for Royal Caribbean cruises .

Disney Treasure

  • Launching December 2024

Disney Treasure, the latest addition to the Disney Cruise Line, will launch in December this year, marking a significant milestone after a decade since the launch of the last Disney cruise ship. The ship has 1256 cabins and suites, each designed with a theme inspired by Disney movies like Aladdin, The Lion King, and Pocahontas.

Passengers on the cruise are in for a treat, with exciting Broadway-style musicals and the Aqua Mouse, a thrilling Disney water ride. The themed restaurants on board are another highlight, featuring a Marvel-themed restaurant and a Mexican restaurant inspired by the movie Coco. And if that wasn’t enough, the ship also features a new Haunted Mansion-themed bar, resembling a classic ocean liner’s haunted drawing room, serving ghostly cocktails.

  • Launching August 2024

Silversea Cruises is preparing to launch its newest ship, the Silver Ray, in the summer of 2024. The Silver Ray is the second Nova Class ship in the Silversea fleet, and it promises to bring ultra-luxury cruising to a new level. With a capacity of 728 passengers, the Silver Ray is a small ship that offers an all-balcony cabin experience, complete with walk-in closets and butler service.

But that’s not all. The Silver Ray is also an eco-friendly cruise ship, making it the first hybrid, luxury cruise ship to be completely emission-free while in port. It does this by using fuel cells and batteries to power the ship.

The Silver Ray will begin its maiden voyage season sailing in the Mediterranean, before repositioning to Fort Lauderdale, where it will offer South America cruise itineraries. Check the prices for Silversea cruises .

Brilliant Lady

  • Launching TBA 2024

Virgin Voyages, the popular adults-only cruise line, is launching its newest ship, the “Brilliant Lady,” sometime in 2024. The brand new ship will have a capacity of over 2700 passengers and will be an adults-only cruise—perfect for anyone seeking an indulgent cruising experience.

Explora II is the latest ship of Explora Journeys, MSC Group’s newest addition to its luxury brand. With a capacity of slightly over 900 passengers, it’s a smaller cruise ship that promises a more personalized experience for its guests.

Passengers on board the ship will be treated to a range of luxurious amenities that include oversized suites, welcome champagne bottles, an exclusive whiskey and cigar bar with rare whiskeys, an expansive spa, and plenty of bespoke experiences. The ship will sail in the Mediterranean, perfect for passengers looking for a luxurious and intimate cruising experience.

Mein Schiff 7

Carnival Firenze Arrives in Long Beach Ahead of Inaugural Cruise

  • April 24, 2024

Carnival Firenze

Carnival Cruise Line’s new Carnival Firenze has arrived in California ahead of its inaugural cruise. After a month-long repositioning voyage that started in Spain, the 2021-built vessel docked in Long Beach for the first time on April 23, 2024.

Sailing around South America, the Carnival Firenze also made technical stops in the Canary Islands, Argentina, and Chile before arriving in California. The ship is fresh off its conversion from Costa to Carnival at Navantia (pictured).

The Vista-Class ship is now scheduled to set sail on its maiden voyage from the port on April 25, 2024. On that day, the Carnival Firenze kicks off a program of three- to seven-night cruises to the Mexican Riviera, California and Baja Mexico.

Ports of call include Ensenada, Cabo San Lucas, Mazatlán and Puerto Vallarta, in addition to Catalina Island.

For its maiden voyage, the Firenze is scheduled to offer a seven-night cruise to the Mexican Riviera. The itinerary features three full days at sea, as well as visits to Mazatlán, Puerto Vallarta and Cabo San Lucas.

Previously operated by Costa Cruises, the Carnival Firenze joins Carnival Cruise Line’s new Carnival Fun Italian Style concep.

The product combines the company’s traditional venues, service, and experiences with an Italian vibe and atmosphere.

With a design inspired by the Italian city of Florence, the 4,232-guest ship offers themed public areas and staterooms. One of the main dining rooms is named after Michelangelo, the Renaissance sculptor and painter that was born in the city.

The Carnival Firenze also offers signature venues of the Carnival Cruise Line fleet, including an Italian-themed version of Guy’s Burger Joint, a European-themed Limelight Lounge and a complete Hero’s Tribute Bar.

Also unique to the vessel and its sister ship Carnival Venezia is a customized livery, which combines Costa’s funnel with Carnival’s new hull design. As a nod to the ship’s roots, however, the red stripe on the hull was painted yellow.
