A lovely, welcoming city in south Texas, San Antonio offers its famed Riverwalk, complete with guided boat tours, loads of good restaurants and bars, and amazing opportunities for people-watching.  The downtown area is eminently walkable but also offers excellent public transport.  The Riverwalk is ever-expanding and now extends both north from the city center to the public library, art museums and beyond and south through the King William historic district. “Remember the Alamo” was the battle cry of Texans in their fight for independence.  Although the Alamo is the best-known, there are actually five missions within about twelve miles along the San Antonio River.   The southern four make up San Antonio Missions National Historical Park.  Each of the missions is very different from the others and offers a glimpse into mission life in southern Texas in the early 1700’s and is well worth a visit. Less than an hour’s drive from San Antonio are several interesting small towns such as Gruene, which boasts the oldest dance hall in Texas.  On the banks of the Guadalupe River, Gruene hosts an outstanding farmer’s/arts and crafts market on the third weekend of each month, February through October and is home to many boutiques and shops.
