serengeti safari packing list

Packing for your first safari can be a daunting task. It is not just about taking the essentials, but also understanding what to expect from this new and exciting experience.

Most people don’t realize that African safaris are not just limited to a few hours in the wild.

You need to be prepared for lots of travel, long drives, and a great deal of time outdoors.

If you want to know exactly what to take and the practical reasons WHY you need them, then you’ll find this safari packing list incredibly helpful!

Safari Clothing Essentials

The following list of safari clothing is based on the assumption that you will be sat in a vehicle for the majority of the day, which makes your safari packing list a tad easier.

Note: We are all for sustainable travel and find no need to splurge on expensive safari gear that will only be used once!

Tips for Safari Clothes Packing

  • Material Choose clothing that is easy to pack, dries quickly, and wicks moisture away from the skin. Man-made fabrics (such as polyimide) perform better than natural fabrics (such as cotton) and keep you cooler.
  • Laundry Services Laundry services are generally available at camps and lodges, so only pack what you need as luggage space is precious.
  • Wear Earth Tones The African Tsetse fly is ferocious and is attracted to dark blue and black colors. With bites similar to horseflies, they can and will make your trip a living nightmare! Choose khaki green and brown colors where possible. It’s best to avoid pale colors as you will get rather dusty and dirty during the day!
  • Organize Your Clothing Organizing your safari clothing makes life so much easier, particularly if you have onward travel to another destination. Use packing cubes to place your safari clothes on the top for easier access and less mess.

Clothing for your African Safari Packing List:

1. safari shirt.

safari shirt anti-insect repellent defense review

If there is one thing worth investing in, it is a proper safari shirt. We were the only ones in our camp that didn’t get bitten to bits by those relentless tsetse flies!

Tsetse flies can bite through thin or penetrable fabric, and a quality safari shirt will prevent them from doing so.

The best safari shirts will have built-in anti-insect treatment.

You can thank us later…!

2. T-Shirts

Layering is key to keeping warm and/or cool. Wearing t-shirts (under your shirt) also means you only need to fork out on the one expensive safari shirt.

3. Boots or Shoes

You don’t need specific safari boots or shoes and you certainly don’t need to spend a fortune on them. As you’ll be in the vehicle all day, a sturdy pair that you can wear with socks (that you can tuck your pants into) will do just fine.

When you’re walking around camp you won’t want to wear open-toe sandals, especially once you’ve seen all the sunspiders scattering around! Eeeek!

4. Safari Hat

the best safari hat in a bag foldable

Don’t forget your safari hat! You want full coverage – preferably one with a large brim that keeps your face and neck in the shade. Even with a pop-up roof, the sun will still manage to beat down on you, and it’s one heck of a sun!

Tip: Make sure your safari hat fits you snugly or has a neck cord – your rides will pick up speed and you don’t want to lose it with an unexpected gust of wind!

We love this packable safari hat that always bounces back to life (in featured photo).

5. Safari Pants

Long, lightweight, and enough to cover up those legs but not too hot or bulky. You’ll be sitting for a large proportion of the day so they’ll need to be comfortable.

You probably won’t want to wear shorts after you’ve encountered those tsetse flies.

Lightweight, comfortable, and preferably water-resistant. Early starts can get chilly, so don’t be fooled – even if you’re the hardiest of people!

7. soft-sided luggage.

The North Face Base Camp Duffel Bag TNF Black Size Large

If you’re traveling on bush flights you’ll be limited to 15kg on your luggage, plus you’ll need a soft bag (no hard suitcases allowed) that can be stuffed onto small planes. A duffel bag is an essential item to get your safari packing list going!

8. Packing Cubes

Packing Cubes 8 Sets Latest Design Travel Luggage Organizers Include Waterproof Shoe Storage Bag Convenient Packing Pouches for Traveller (Grey)

If you’ve never used them before, you’re in for a treat! Packing cubes made life so much easier on safari!

These provide the perfect way to organize your clothes and toiletries. Plus, you’ll be able to quickly see what’s in them which makes it easy when you’re looking for something specific without having to unpack everything. A total game-changer for organized travel!

Note: Plastic bags are now banned in many African countries and will be confiscated at airports. Sealable silicone bags are a perfect alternative for your leaky toiletries.

9. Universal Travel Adapter

HAOZI Universal Travel Adapter, All-in-one International Power Adapter with 2.4A Dual USB, European Adapter Travel Power Adapter Wall Charger for UK, EU, AU, Asia Covers 150+Countries (Blue)

Be sure to bring the correct travel adapters for Africa so you can charge your essential batteries. There are two types of outlets, European and British – this universal travel adapter will have you covered in any eventuality!

10. Insect Repellent

It’s important to keep biting insects away from you, both during the day and at night. They can carry dangerous diseases such as malaria, so don’t be tempted to leave this out.

The best type to use is one that can be sprayed over clothing. I know this may sound peculiar, but that’s what they all do in the bush!

Choose a natural repellant that does not damage clothing – this is the insect repellent we used and our safari guides absolutely loved it!

11. Tiger Balm

Tiger Balm Red Ointment for Muscalar Aches and Paints Herbal Rub Headache Pain Relief Big Jar (Thailand), 30g

African tsetse flies have a nasty bite on them. This tiger balm will help take the edge off any itchy or swollen skin and should not be missed off your safari packing list. We first discovered this in Thailand and it’s by far the best relief for insect bites

12. First Aid Kit

Remember that you’re a while away from any emergency medical care. A simple first aid kit can take the stress out of any minor accidents along the way. Plus, you won’t have to rely on calling the staff to your tent at night if you have your own kit.

13. Sunscreen

Being so close to the equator means that you’re going to be exposed to a lot of UV radiation. Pack sunscreen and wear it when outdoors, even when you think you don’t need it.

On our first day, we thought the pop-up roof in our vehicle would provide enough protection from the sun – we were very wrong!

14. Sunglasses

UV protection is essential in Africa! Protecting yourself from intense sunlight will make your safari experience so much more comfortable. If you want to avoid squinting all day, then sunglasses are a must!

15. Flashlight

Anker Rechargeable Bolder LC40 Flashlight, LED Torch, Super Bright 400 Lumens CREE LED, IPX5 Water Resistant, 5 Modes High/Medium/Low/Strobe/SOS, Indoor/Outdoor (Camping, Hiking and Emergency Use)

It gets pretty dark at night when you’re in an environment with zero light pollution. Most camps should provide you with a flashlight, but we would always err on the side of caution and have one handy.

16. Mosquito Net

It goes without saying that tented camps will lack any air-conditioning that ordinarily keeps mosquitos at bay! Check if your accommodation provides mosquito nets around beds before you book, if not – take one with you.

17. Power Bank

Anker Portable Charger, PowerCore Slim 10000 Power Bank, 10000mAh Battery Pack, High-Speed PowerIQ Charging Technology for iPhone, Samsung Galaxy, and More

A power bank is essential if you’re on safari for more than a day. It’s always handy to have an external charger that can work anywhere in Africa.

Most safari vehicles will have USB ports that can be used with charging cables, but if you’re staying in tented camps then I wouldn’t rely on charging anything too quickly!

18. Selfie Stick

Wait, I know what you’re thinking… selfie sticks are soooo NOT on-trend!

But when you’re up close to a pack of lions feasting, or that cheetah that’s slowly walking behind your vehicle, you’ll be incredibly pleased you had something that could reach around to capture the all-important moment (rather than hanging your arms out of the jeep!)

19. Anti-Diarrhea Tablets

Being on the go in Africa can result in some stomach upset, so it’s best to have a supply of anti-diarrhea tablets with you. The last thing you need is for your bucket list safari trip to be ruined because you can’t part with the bathroom!

20. Binoculars

occer 12x25 Compact Binoculars with Clear Low Light Vision, Large Eyepiece Waterproof Binocular for Adults Kids,High Power Easy Focus Binoculars for Bird Watching,Outdoor Hunting,Travel,Sightseeing

Check whether your safari vehicle provides a sufficient number of binoculars for all travelers.

If not, you might want to bring your own as there’s nothing quite like hurrying up the person next to you so you can cop a look at the action!

21. Microfibre Towel

Rainleaf Microfiber Towel,Army Green,12 X 24 Inches

These smart microfibre towels are light and packable for when you’re not staying in a hotel. They dry quickly too and won’t cause a stench when you’re on the go!

22. Toilet Paper/Wipes

Depending on your safari destination, there may not be any bathrooms within a 2-hour radius, so be prepared by packing toilet paper/wipes and hand sanitizer! These are absolutely essential items for your safari packing list!

23. Anti-Malaria Tablets

There is a risk of malaria in most parts of Africa. Speak with your travel clinic about the pros and cons of taking anti-malarial tablets, sometimes the side effects can be off-putting if you have existing medical conditions or a sensitive tummy.

You may decide that taking the tablets is not an option and therefore need to re-evaluate whether an African safari is the right choice for you.

Other Handy Safari Packing Tips:

  • Take sufficient cash You may be surprised to hear that there are no ATM machines out on safari! Make sure you bring enough cash for the duration of your safari for souvenirs, additional snacks, drinks at your camp/lodge, and tips for your safari guide
  • Drones Drones are not allowed by any camps in East Africa due to the effects they have on wildlife (and also for security reasons)
  • Hairdryers Hairdryers and other powerful appliances generally cannot be used if you’re staying in tented camps as electricity is scarce
  • Avoid any military/camo clothing It’s a safari, not the SAS! Just kidding. The real reason to avoid military-style clothing is that it may land you into trouble in some territories, especially in Kenya. Governments are wary of anyone posing as a military officer and will question your intentions. A situation we would all just rather avoid!

Eco-Friendly Safari Lunch Boxes In Tanzania

Eco Friendly Safari Lunch Boxes In Tanzania

Lunch Box for Safari

One thing Erika and I have felt strongly about when on a safari in Africa is the lunch boxes. More often than not, the food is not very tasty, it’s not very healthy and it’s full of plastic wrapping and plastic containers.

Actually, on my first safari in Tanzania about 2 years ago I was positively surprised about the lunch boxes. Maybe because it was my first REAL time in Africa and I wasn’t sure what to expect. But I found it to be well arranged, neatly wrapped, had quite ok food and in some places we even got to pick our things to bring in your lunch box each morning before going on your safari game drive. But, we have changed our minds about the lunch boxes since then. Especially all the plastics as we are trying to travel more sustainably.

Here’s how a usual lunchbox looks like with all the wrappings for every single thing. And we’ve had worse!

Eco-Friendly Lunch Boxes in Tanzania – Do They Exist?

So what to do? Well, I Googled it…! 🙂 Sustainable lunch boxes // Eco -friendly lunch boxes // Eco-friendly lunch boxes in Arusha, in Tanzania. Nothing came up. Mostly just websites of camps that stated to be eco-friendly, but no mentioning of lunch boxes – Not sure why they appeared actually… Anyway, I kept going at it and eventually came across this Tanzanian advertising website, a very basic website. In there, someone had posted about their new eco-friendly lunchboxes in Arusha – “This N That” they were called but otherwise it didn’t say much.

this n that whileinafrica

We agreed to meet in a coffee shop and the owner, Sandra Vaughan, brought one of the lunch boxes. That way we were able to see it with our own eyes, take pictures and even taste the food 🙂 She was happy to show us the lunch box and explain the background of how she and her husband had come up with the idea and developed this new product of theirs. This didn’t seem easy in a country like Tanzania where Sustainability and Eco-Friendly are still relatively unknown.

The Eco-Friendly Lunch Box for Safari

To be honest we were positively surprised about how well they had been thought out and researched to make sure everything in there is eco-friendly. The most important fact, it has absolutely no plastics at all. They spent the better part of a year talking to and meeting different suppliers, researching different materials that could be used to eventually develop a concept that would work which is truly plastic-free and eco-friendly.

What’s Inside

So what’s in the lunch boxes and how do they keep them plastic-free? Well apart from the food, this is what you will find in there:

  • 100% No Plastics – The entire lunch box and its contents are 100% plastic-free and everything will decompose within 6 months.
  • Cutlery and food containers look like plastic but are made of PLA (Polylactic Acid). A biodegradable and bioactive thermoplastic aliphatic polyester derived from renewable resources, such as corn starch, cassava roots, chips or starch, or sugarcane. So completely natural ingredients.
  • Wrappings are made out of biodegradable paper.
  • The box itself is made out of a paper carton.
  • The juice carton is made of the normal paper carton without the normal plastic straw.

safari lunch kit

The only thing in the box which they are still not so happy about is the juice. They still get this delivered with a plastic straw attached to it from the supplier. So what they do instead is to manually remove the plastic straw and replace it in the box with a bio-degradable straw made out of vegetables. And the plastic straws? They are sent back to the factory where they buy the juice so at least it doesn’t go to waste. For all the non-plastic materials such as the cutlery and food containers made out of PLA, they are all imported from the UK as they are not available locally – Still better than all the plastic!

Price of the Eco-Friendly Lunch Box

Considering all this, you might think this lunch box will be a lot more expensive than the usual ones? Well, not really. Or… At least it depends on what you compare it with. There are lunch boxes available at really low prices that any decent company can’t compete with. But what do you get then? Well cheap food and cheap raw materials, lots of plastic, and buying from companies that most likely pay low salaries and benefits. Or you support companies who are likely not paying their VAT or Taxes. This because otherwise, it seems impossible to earn a profit with those prices. (We have been told that In 2018, only 7000 companies in entire Tanzania paid tax, although I haven’t been able to find an actual source on this information yet) So the question is, do you think that is worth the saving?

Are Tour Operators Willing to Change?

Another relevant question is whether tour operators are willing to pay extra for eco-friendly and plastic-free lunch boxes? Well, we heard an example of a possible new client who, if he decided to change to these eco-friendly lunch boxes, would have paid 80 cents more per lunch box. And because of that, he decided not to change… Remember, we are talking about trips that cost 1000´s of dollars and he didn’t want to pay the extra 80 cents… Even if he couldn’t afford to earn 80 cents less, adding 80 cents on the price to the guests I don’t think will make any difference considering the overall price of a safari.

safari lunch kit

A popular detail about the eco-friendly lunch boxes is that they freeze the juice during the night. That way, when put in the lunch box, it will work as a cooling element allowing guests to have fresh cool food and a cold drink for their lunch.

How To Ensure Your Safari Operator Uses Eco-Friendly Lunch Boxes

So you might be reading this and thinking, how do I make sure the tour operator I book with will use plastic-free eco-friendly lunch boxes? The best you can do is to ask about it before you book. And if they don’t offer it but you otherwise like their way of communicating and the offer they gave you, just ask them to get your lunch boxes from This N That and pay that extra few dollars, I’m sure they will accommodate to close the deal and get you as a client 🙂 And not only is it plastic-free, it also tastes better and has more healthy food in there!

safari lunch kit

Recently, former President Obama visited Tanzania and asked specifically to avoid plastic and to not get any plastic straws. Him asking for that probably creates a bit more attention around it than what you can cause. But still, if you ask it will help create more awareness and eventually make it automatic that all lunch boxes are eco-friendly.

So are you going on safari in Tanzania and wondering how you can make your trip more green and sustainable? Ask for Eco-Friendly Lunch boxes and you have made a good head start!

NOTE: We did receive a free lunch box from This N That but there was absolutely no obligation or requirement for me to write this. I have given my honest opinion and tried to describe everything as I saw and experienced it. With this, I only hope that I can make a small contribution and help promote sustainable travel .

Caroline

I found this article while also searching online for the makers of this lunchbox. I enjoyed one on safari recently and I was very very surprised and delighted to see a completely plastic free lunch box! It made me wonder why there is still so much single-use plastic in developing countries, especially as the demand for plastic-free is growing so quickly!

Erika Atienza

At least in African safaris, it boils down to cost but that’s why it’s important that clients request for plastic-free lunchbox to force tour operators to source for this type. The power is in the consumers’ hands 🙂

Samuel Makanga

If it weren’t for the people who put in their all for conservation, we would not have the precious wildlife nor would our children find it. Thanks for the good write up, this should be adopted as culture on safari and a challenge everyone should take up. Not only should it be in the precious Tanzania parks but also all over Africa, primeugandasafaris is the best place to find the best safari itineraries as well as community responsible tourism programmes. Lets always carry only memories and leave only foot steps.

Martin Tvede

Yes hopefully this and other initiatives to help the environment and the wildlife will become the norm sometime soon ! Were glad you like the article 🙂

Godfrey Tumwesigye Elasmus

It’s indeed helpful. I am so much impressed with this and I will definitely be one of these people to promote it in Uganda. I think it’s worth it!

Thats excellent to hear! We havent been on safari in Uganda yet but I could imagine the problem is likely the same there. Hope it can be improved.

Speedway Safaris

Very nice article. Doing tourism with environmental concerns in mind is the best thing. Thanks for the innovation which we pray can spread across African parks and tourist places.

Thanks 🙂 We hope so and definitely encourage everyone to adopt more environment friendly pratices. Its needed.

Susan Nyabonyi

A good read and challenge to everyone.

Thanks! Yes we really hope this will be improved!

Safari Packing List: Our in-depth guide what to bring on a safari

From clothes to camera gear & first aid kit

Tusk & Mane Fly Camp Lower Zambezi National Park Zambia

Many of you have been inquiring lately what we pack for a safari , which essentials to bring and what to leave at home. The main question is: What do you truly need on a safari? And how can you manage to abide by the 15-20kg bush plane luggage weight limit (and that’s the total weight – including your carry-on and personal items)!

So here’s our absolutely essential, proven-in-detail, fully explained safari packing list with everything you need on a safari plus all our tips what you really don’t need.

Disclaimer: This post is written by a woman , who often travels solo or with her husband and no kids. This packing list might look a bit different for a man or very different for a family with kids.

At the very end of this post you’ll find a FREE downloadable pdf packing list.

The clothes should be lightweight, durable and neutral coloured. And it’s all about layers!

Table of Contents

Safari packing list: Luggage

This is the first piece of advice: Unless you go on an ultra luxury safari without any weight or luggage limitations you should always bring luggage that works on bush planes , in open safari vehicles and on sandy paths in bush camps. So in essence: no hard case trolleys.

Instead it’s recommended to opt for duffle bags as they can easily be stowed – no matter if you travel by Mokoro boat or on a helicopter. As a bonus if they’re well made they have really durable zippers and close well so no sand and dust can get into your bag. My luggage usually consists of:

  • 1 x North Face duffle bag large (weighing about 10kg when fully packed, check-in luggage on long haul flights)
  • 1 x North Face duffle bag small (weighing about 5kg when fully packed, carry on luggage on long haul flights – this is mostly for my camera gear, which is stowed in separate camera inlets inside the duffle bag. Usually there’s some extra space in this bag for souvenirs…)
  • 1 x small waterproof backpack (personal item, mostly for my travel documents and laptop)

Duffle bags are the perfect bags to pack for a safari

Safari packing list: Clothes

It’s important to note a few things before we jump into the details of my garment packing list:

  • It doesn’t matter if my safari is 5 days or 3 weeks – I would always pack the same amount of clothes.
  • Camps and lodges in the bush offer complimentary laundry services for everything except for your delicates (exceptions apply, but generally this is the rule).
  • This means you essentially need 2-3 sets of clothes, because laundry can sometimes take 2-3 days to return (they might be hand washed and dried outside in many camps in lack of washing machines).
  • The only item where I pack supply for more days is underwear, although most camps offer laundry detergent and so you can always wash your delicates yourself by hand when in need.

My friend & travel buddy Kady is wearing our trusted Palladium boots here. And for cold mornings you should always bring a lightweight insulated jacket.

These are the garments i bring:.

  • 1x lightweight insulated jacket (this is essential when travelling in the dry season = winter in many South African destinations, it gets cold at night!)
  • 1x thin scarf (I use this to protect my neck from wind and sunburn)
  • 1x thick scarf (this is a personal preference, but I love it and use it as pillow on planes and for very cold morning and evening game drives)
  • 1x Long Cargo Pants (mine are relatively thin and are tapered at the ankles to avoid any insects to crawl in – this is only essential for walking safaris, not for game drives)
  • 3x leggings (these are my go to “pants” on game drives – comfortable, easy to wear and wash, dry quickly. The only downside is that Tse Tse flies can bite you through those, but they literally bite through down jackets as well…)
  • 2x long sleeve linen shirts (I wear these over sleeveless tops on warm days and just around camp for lunch etc.)
  • 5x pairs of socks (high enough so you can put them over your tapered long pants to avoid ants to crawl into your pants)
  • 2x long sleeve wool under layers (I usually bring quick dry wool long sleeves on winter safaris to layer in the mornings and evenings)
  • 2x short sleeve / sleeveless T-Shirts
  • 1x pair of Sunglasses
  • 2x hooded sweaters (one jersey and one cashmere hooded sweater – layered over the long sleeve shirts these are perfect for the chilly mornings and the hoodie helps me spare packing a wool beanie)
  • 7x underwear
  • 2x pyjamas (again, it gets cold at night and if you sleep in a tent or even a regular safari camp you’ll want to wear a pyjama. I bring 2, so one can be washed once in a while.)
  • 1x pair of Palladium ankle high light linen boots (these are the perfect safari shoes for me. I wear them on cold days, for walking safaris, hiking, etc. – everywhere except for the rainforest)
  • Alternatively: 1x pair of waterproof ankle high hiking boots (if I go on safari in Central Africa – think gorilla or chimp trekking and moist rainforest conditions)
  • 1x pair of Birkenstock sandals (I use the Arizona Eva model, which is 100% plastic and therefore can be easily washed and doubles as my showering and outdoor bathroom shoes)
  • 1x safari hat with a wide brim (to protect your face and neck – especially for boat or canoe safaris!)
  • 1x basecap (for walking safaris)
  • Sometimes: 1x swimsuit (if I check into a lodge with a pool or combine my safari with a beach stay)

Camps very often provide complimentary laundry services on safari

During the days it usually gets warm enough for linen shirts and t-shirts – even in winter.

Layering is essential on a safari – when we left in the morning we needed a jacket, on the plane we used them as pillows and when we landed it was warm enough for t-shirts and linen shirts., safari packing list: toiletries.

A short disclaimer here: I generally wear very little to no make-up, so this might read almost like a men’s toiletry bag. Of course you can add a few items if you prefer to have some glam in the bush . My experience is: You’ll be comfortable with less and less every day 🙂

Also it’s important to know that there’s countries that forbid the use of single use plastics (so think about this when you pack cotton swabs, floss picks, contact lenses, etc.). Everything that is packaged in single use plastics should be avoided if possible. I’ve listed a few alternative products below.

Toiletry packing list for a safari

What’s in my safari toiletry bag:

  • Sunscreen with SPF50 (try to bring environmentally friendly products, as your waste water will remain in the bush)
  • Face Cleanser (this is one of my luxury products, but I can’t go to sleep without a proper face clean, even in the bush)
  • Antioxidant (I’m trying to avoid sun damage to my facial skin, so this is also an essential for my face care routine)
  • Tooth Brush (I even bring my electrical tooth brush, but that’s a very personal choice – since I travel so much I don’t want to compromise on my routine here)
  • Deodorant (without perfume! You should never wear perfume on a safari, as animals have a very sensitive sense of smell and any unnatural scent can deter wildlife.)
  • Tampons or your preferred feminine hygiene product (again: these will remain in the trash in the bush camps, so I use biodegradable organic cotton products. Personally I wouldn’t bring a menstrual cup on a safari as access to fresh water might be limited during the day when you’re out in the field, etc.)
  • Biodegradable (!) dental floss (I use floss picks made from bamboo)
  • Reusable ear swabs (I bought a washable one, that I use on safaris – it’s not perfect, but better than creating unnecessary waste.)

On safari at Musekese Camp in Kafue National Park Zambia

Toiletries that you don’t need to bring:

  • Shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, body lotion! All of these are provided in the camps (and they will make sure the products are biodegradable and do not damage the soil or create toxic waste water).
  • Towels: Camps and lodges always provide fresh towels. Unless you’ll go camping individually or stay in rooftop tents etc., then I would recommend quick dry travel towels.

Toiletry packing list for a safari

Safari packing list: Camera & Equipment

This is a special section for the photography enthusiasts among you. As a professional travel photographer I bring quite an extensive amount of equipment, but I still bring a lot less than the “real” wildlife photographers. Their luggage almost exclusively consists of camera equipment.

The main difference is that I rely mostly on zoom lenses , to keep the camera equipment down to a minimum. Wildlife photographers often bring prime lenses and then you need a lot more than me 🙂

Marion Payr on a safari with a Nikon Z 8 and a 100-400mm tele zoom lens

Here’s what I bring to take photos and videos (and work):

  • Nikon Z8 (my primary camera)
  • Nikon Z6II (my secondary camera)
  • NIKKOR Z 100-400mm 4.5-5.6 lens (for wildlife shots)
  • NIKKOR Z 24-70mm 2.8 lens (for landscapes, portraits, travel shots)
  • 5x camera batteries (some days you might not be able to charge. Remember many safari camps don’t have power outlets in the rooms, but only at the main tent – so it’s always a bit of logistics to charge equipment.)
  • 3x extra memory cards (it gets very technical here, but I bring one very fast ultra professional card for each camera with 512GB and the extra cards are all smaller. On my last safari I shot 500GB worth of photos and videos in a few days.)
  • 3x 1TB SSD hard drives (this is to make sure I can create duplicate back-ups during the trip.)
  • 2x camera battery charger (to charge 2 batteries at once)
  • Laptop + charger (this is only necessary for my photo back-ups and editing sessions. If I weren’t a photographer I would probably leave my laptop at home on a safari, there’s often no internet anyways.)
  • Mobile phone + 2 charger cables (1x regular cable for regular power outlets and 1x “old” USB cable for planes and safari vehicles)
  • 1x power adapter (these are heavy and bulky, so you can also check with the camps you’re staying at if they provide adapters or if – like in Zambia – they had multiple different types of sockets for all sorts of chargers.)
  • 1x multi-outlet power strip (I still bring one of those with at least 3 sockets, so I can charge more devices if there’s only one outlet available)
  • 1x battery pack (this is to charge my phone or laptop when there’s no power available for whatever reason – we had fly-camps that relied 100% on solar and then 3 overcast days = no power. So it’s the ultimate backup, but only necessary, because I do need to work on these trips.)

Nikon Z 8 and a 100-400mm tele zoom lens - camera recommendation for a safari

Safari packing list: First-aid kit

This is a delicate one, as I’m no medical expert, so please don’t take this list and rely on it 100%, but consult your doctor before your trip. Also each location within Africa has different preconditions when it comes to tropical diseases, etc. – so these recommendations are to be taken with caution.

  • Malaria medication (Malarone or similar. Please consult your doctor about the options when it comes to standby vs. prophylactic intake of malaria medication.)
  • Clinical thermometer
  • Antihistamine (I sometimes react to insect bites)
  • Wound Disinfection
  • Blister Pads (if you go on many walking safaris)
  • Gauze bandages
  • Disinfectant Spray

What I didn’t pack on my last trip was any regular flu medication and of course I caught a cold… my travel buddy Kady luckily had pastils against sore throat, nose spray and the likes. So you might want to add these to your list!

What you you don’t need to bring:

  • Mosquito repellent (with a high DEET content)
  • Insect repellants are usually provided by each camp. Often they even have two different types – one for your skin and one for your clothes. Also they provide the local products, that often work much better than what you can bring from your home country.

Reusable water bottles are provided by camps on a safari

Safari packing list: Miscellaneous

Lastly here are few miscalleaneous items that are quite essential for any trip.

  • Wallet with credit card, debit card, insurance card, etc.
  • US Dollars (even when travelling from Europe I usually exchange US dollars ahead of the trip as those are accepted in every country. Make sure the bills are not torn or old or anything scribbled on them. Locals will only accept dollar notes in good condition as otherwise the banks will not exchange to their local currency. You can read more about my most important money tips for a safari here .)
  • Vaccination card (you might have to provide proof of a yellow fever vaccination or a COVID vaccination – make sure to check the requirements for the destination you’re visiting).

What you you may or may not need to bring:

  • Binoculars: I personally never bring binoculars, because I always look through the viewfinder of my camera with the long tele zoom lens instead. In many camps they also provide binoculars, either one pair per game drive vehicle or in more luxurious lodges there’s even a pair waiting for each guest in the room.
  • Reusable water bottles: Even in more rustic fly camps these will be provided for the duration of the stay, but if you want to make sure to also have a water bottle ready for travel days, on airports, etc. you can bring your own.

andBeyond Chobe under Canvas tent

  • Headlamp: Usually camps provide flashlights or lanterns for nightly toilet visits or trips to the main tent. In many camps you’re not allowed to walk outside of your tent alone at night (because they’re unfenced and wildlife will pass through). So a team member will always be there with a flashlight.
  • Gators: I brought gators to Rwanda for the chimp trekking and used them once during a 2 week trip. So unless you plan on going jungle trekking regularly I think those are not really necessary.

I’ll use them. But I had to go buy a bunch of plates from the grocery store bc these are way too flimsy and won’t work for what I needed. They feel like poor quality with how weak and flimsy they feel.

Dining at the Savannah Cafe

Come braai with us during your next safari or overnight excursion! Meal reservations must be made as part of a safari or overnight reservation. Due to limited availability, we require reservations to be made at least 48 hours prior to arrival. Add Now

Welcome to the Savannah Café!

Howzit! Before you head out on safari or settle into an evening in your luxury tent, join us for a meal at the Savannah Café. When you dine with us, you’re sharing an experience inspired by the legendary South African Braai (pronounced “bry,” in case you were wondering). A mainstay of South African tradition, the braai has expanded to become part of the cultural life of many neighboring nations and now we’re pleased to offer our Sonoma County take on this storied tradition!

While braai can be described as a close cousin of our own American barbecue tradition, it is also much more. It’s an excuse to get together, catch up with some old friends and make a few new ones. Christmas, birthday parties, bridal showers, or any old Thursday, there’s no wrong time to braai!

Dining Braai Grill

The rules to a good braai are simple:

  • This is a social occasion. The more the merrier!
  • Grilling is imperative and should be done over a wood fire.
  • Sides, sides, and more sides!
  • “Dop” or drinks are a must. Grilling is thirsty work after all.

Here at the Savannah Café, we’re making braaing a daily event. Lunch and dinner will always include savory smells rising from our custom built wood-fired grill and a huge assortment of delicious sides and desserts. We offer beer, wine, and other beverages. With abundant seating on our expansive terrace, dinner at Safari West is a chance to get to know your fellow adventurers and enjoy the culinary creations of the Savannah Café.

“(Braai) is one thing that can unite us irrespective of all of the things that are trying to tear us apart.” Archbishop Desmond Tutu

*Meals reservations must be made as part of a safari or overnight reservation. The Savannah Café is a reservation-only facility and cannot accommodate walk-ins. Please call to confirm availability during January and February.

Groups of 10 or more, there will be an automatic 18% service charge which goes directly to the restaurant staff. It will be added on and charged to the credit card on file once the reservations department receives your confirmation.

Looking forward to my next purchase

The Inner Light Sample Pack

I love Worldwide Studio! A great place for beat packs to equip your D.A.W with the tools needed to be successful. I was very impressed and humble to the fact how easy it was. I would suggest Worldwide studio to everybody wanting to add a little something, something, to more creative in such a competitive industry.

Lunch77 Classic Drum Kit Collection

The pack is crazy...top notch,I never thought something Soo good could be free... World wide studios really out did themselves

I checked out this drumkit after using Lunch77's kits on stream. Anyways, I was looking for an ATL Jacob drum kit and didn't see one, but saw a free kit, The Lunch77 Classic Drum Kit Collection. There was an option to tip on the free kit, which I obviously did ($5.00) because Lunch77 is an absolute savage. Upon receiving the free kit, I learned that I already got these kits from reddit years ago and wasn't even upset. I'm honestly glad that I finally got to pay for some of the drums that I use on virtually all of my beats. F*** the haters; lunch has a Ye credit and they don't. Stay fire.

I love this sample pack it's one of the best I got in a long time..

If you are looking for a sound frl, it’s probably in one of these kits. In all honesty I was really impressed with the quality and collection of sounds. I grabbed about 2-4 kits and been using them often. Definitely great for people needing great sounds without having to spend tons of money and not really know what it is you are getting honestly. Appreciate the team a lot.

Used the Free kit that I’ve received and it is straight fire! Lunch and worldwide studios have some of the best Drum-kits on the internet!

I love getting starters from friends or discord but they are usually low quality, these ones were high quality sounds that could provide a good base for any beat. I personally didn’t like the repetitive use of bass piano notes but beggars can’t be choosers and the stems in the pack can go a long way

When I first started listening to it I was ready to put it to the side and place it in my experimental folder. But as revisited the pack the next day I gave it extra attention because it didn't sound like all of the other sample packs I have recieved over the years. I don't remember how I found you guys, but I'm glad you reached out to me and made me have another look. I can't wait to use some of your work.

Industry Mystery Sample Pack: Featuring Worldwide Studios

The samples within are as good as I expected them to be. 10/10

@siyosizzle because I review this honestly. The sounds are all precisely clean, have looping points and overall are ready to use without any mixing needed. What I love about it is how clean and modern the distortion is. Some snares, hats and percs have very cool crisp perc-like delay and it makes the bounce way fuller and interesting. I also love that you can really hear how the sounds are made all in the same sound setting, so you can really combine any drum with any and every other. It really is worth every cent and supporting Lunch77 like this is definetly the best decision you can make. Way better than purchasing any other drum kit with recycled sounds. Cant wait for some other new kits that Lunch77 releases!!! God bless you! 🙌🏽

Consumer Reports asks USDA to remove Lunchables from schools' lunch menus

In this photo illustration, a pack of Lunchables is displayed on Wednesday in San Anselmo, Calif. Consumer Reports is asking for the Department of Agriculture to eliminate Lunchables food kits from the National School Lunch Program after finding high levels of lead, sodium and cadmium in tested kits.

The advocacy group Consumer Reports is urging the federal government to remove Lunchables from the national free and reduced-price school lunch program after an analysis found high amounts of sodium and elevated levels of heavy metals.

Brian Ronholm, director of food policy at Consumer Reports, said the meal kits aren't healthy for children and called on the U.S. Department of Agriculture to toss the brand from its National School Lunch Program.

"The Lunchables and similar lunch kits we tested contain concerning levels of sodium and harmful chemicals that can lead to serious health problems over time," Ronholm said in a statement. "The USDA should remove Lunchables from the National School Lunch Program and ensure that kids in schools have healthier options."

Schools ended universal free lunch. Now meal debt is soaring

Shots - Health News

Schools ended universal free lunch. now meal debt is soaring.

Consumer Reports said it found high levels of sodium in Lunchables, detected lead and cadmium in tests and also observed the presence of phthalates, which can impact reproductive health and the human hormonal system.

A USDA spokesperson said the department doesn't allow or disallow individual food items, but rather sets requirements for the overall nutritional content of meals on a daily or weekly basis.

"So, the Lunchables described in the article would need to be paired with fruit, vegetables and milk," the spokesperson said. "In addition, a school who wanted to serve a higher sodium product one day has to balance that with lower sodium items on others."

EPA puts limits on 'forever chemicals' in drinking water

EPA puts limits on 'forever chemicals' in drinking water

They added that the USDA "takes very seriously our responsibility to ensure school meals are of the highest nutritional quality" and that it has been helping more schools use local ingredients and cook additional meals from scratch.

Kraft Heinz says it stands by the quality of Lunchables

In a statement, a spokesperson for Kraft Heinz, which makes Lunchables, said all of its products meet strict safety standards and that lead and cadmium occur naturally in the environment and may show up in food at low levels.

"We are proud of Lunchables and stand by the quality and integrity that goes into making them," they said.

Kraft Heinz has also improved the nutritional benefits of Lunchables recently by adding fresh fruit and reducing the sodium found in its crackers, the spokesperson added.

Consumer Reports says two varieties of Lunchables are currently served as part of the school lunch program: Turkey and Cheddar Cracker Stackers and Extra Cheesy Pizza.

A new study offers hints that healthier school lunches may help reduce obesity

Children's Health

A new study offers hints that healthier school lunches may help reduce obesity.

The group tested store-bought versions of those varieties and found that they had 74% and 69% of the California lead maximum, respectively. Consumer Reports said it used California's threshold for lead as a benchmark for testing rather than the federal limit, because California's standard is "currently the most protective."

The group tested 12 meal kits in total, including Lunchables and other brands, and found at least one type of phthalate in every kit except the Extra Cheesy Pizza variety.

Consumer Reports says Lunchables for schools have higher sodium levels

Consumer Reports also found that Lunchables made to be distributed in schools, which have whole grains in the crackers and additional protein, contain more sodium than those found in stores.

The turkey-and-cheese variety in schools has 930 mg of sodium, compared to the 740 mg found in commercially available kits. For schools, the pizza variety has 700 mg of sodium, while the option sold in stores had 510 mg.

School lunches are Brazil's secret — and delicious — weapon in halting hunger

Goats and Soda

School lunches are brazil's secret — and delicious — weapon in halting hunger.

That means the turkey-and-cheese option has nearly half the sodium of the federal daily suggested amount, while the pizza selection has 34% of the recommended daily sodium amount and more than 50% of California's limit for cadmium, the group found.

A petition created by Consumer Reports to push the USDA to remove Lunchables from schools had more than 14,000 signatures Wednesday afternoon.

Hermann Park unveils game-changing renovations with playgrounds, picnic areas, and more

Houston real estate icon's estate sale offers good deals for worthy causes, texans legend andre johnson celebrates hof election with star-studded, champagne-fueled bash, custom crafted pieces, elegant houston designer crafts new line of antique-inspired furniture.

When Alexandra Killion isn’t raising money for local charities by chairing the La Petite Maison Gala, she’s busy raising two children and running a successful design firm. Recently, she began opening her design office as a showroom for her new semi-eponymous, local-artisan-crafted furniture line AK Collective .

Her Spring Branch office will now be open, by-appointment, for those with an eye for gorgeous pieces that could not previously be successfully sourced elsewhere. Fourteen pieces total, AK Collective is divided into case goods and upholstered furniture, all customizable. The upholstery is dressed in the most beautifully washed linens and velvets — performance strength, of course — including sofas, occasional chairs, and an ottoman with a removable slip-cover for washing. All pieces have classic silhouettes and elegant lines, think scooped arms and tailored skirts. Sturdy case goods include a variety of handsomely carved chests, nightstands, occasional tables, and a pedestal, all customizable as well. Developed as an extension of the custom pieces she designed for clients, prices start around $1,000 and go up to $5,000 or more for the largest sofas.

Killion’s ability to translate her refined taste to the home goods market is assisted by local makers and craftsmen; every piece in the collection is made right here in Houston by the best of each trade. Intricate case goods like the Domus chest begin with the woodworking specialist, then off to the best finisher, followed by a trip to the hardware craftsman —“only the best,” Killion tells CultureMap. It is little wonder that lead times on pieces sit at around 12 weeks — it’s a journey.

Each piece is offered in abundant colors, finishes (including burl and plaster options!), hardware, and tops. The Andreas pedestal table in plaster is particularly striking — not too many companies still manufacture pedestal tables, but they are amazingly multifunctional.

I asked why, being a young designer, she’s is so interested in antiques, wanting her line to replicate heirloom pieces — it’s all in the family. Like this author, her love for antiques comes from her grandmother.

“My home is filled with beautiful pieces I inherited from my grandmother and I love the warmth they add to the space,” she says. “I’ll be passing them down myself,” she delightfully quips before saying “that was the inspiration in creating heirloom quality furniture.” Describing the overall aesthetic of her line as “elegant and timeless, with a contemporary twist,” many will agree that her dream has been entirely realized.

One favorite thing about Killion’s showroom is that she also offers antique case goods, accompanied by really fun vintage accessories that are wildly easy on the wallet. For example, she has a beautiful Wedgewood pitcher for $45 and natural stone lamps for under $500 per piece. Keeping with the “shop local” theme of her showroom, artwork by Houston artists Katie Hagar and Michael Cisarik is also available.

Scheduling a private appointment in a designer's showroom can be intimidating, but Killion's showroom has an overall aesthetic that's designed to put people at ease. "It’s eclectic, and very Round Top inspired,” she says, which is as it should be, since her family keeps a residence in the town. Anyone who appreciates the low key charm of Round Top — or plans biannual shopping pilgrimages to Marburger Farm — will feel comfortable shopping the showroom with her.

Our Favorite Homes in the 2023 AIA Houston Home Tour

By Daniel Renfrow October 20, 2023

The AIA Houston Home Tour includes this colorful midcentury-inspired home in River Oaks.

Houston, it’s time to go home. Well, not your home: it’s time to explore some of the nicest houses in the city by way of the 2023 AIA Houston Home Tour . Presented annually by the Houston chapter of the American Institute of Architects, the event is taking place this year on Saturday, October 21, from noon to 6 p.m.

For the uninitiated, the Houston Home Tour allows the general public to explore some of the city’s most unique private architectural gems (you can purchase tickets here ). It’s one of the easiest ways to get a peek inside some stunning local homes that are likely well outside your price range. The eight featured homes this year range from charming bungalows to a Palm Springs–inspired palace with strong Old Hollywood aesthetics. We’ve picked out three of the most unique homes on the tour so you can hit the ground running.

aia houston home tour 2022

The Inverness Residence in River Oaks is inspired by classic midcentury design.

The Inverness Residence

A joyful, mostly midcentury marvel

This new River Oaks home from Dillon Kyle Architects presents a playful reinterpretation of classic midcentury aesthetics. The 6,279-square-foot property is owned by an avid art collector, who is described by the building’s architect, Dillon Kyle, as a free spirit with a love for design. Despite the residence’s very serious curb appeal, the property doesn’t take itself all too seriously. “It’s not trying to be authentic or pure; it’s just doing its own thing,” Kyle says. “There’s a kind of irreverence for formality or for trying to do things in a restrained or correct way. It’s supposed to be a fun house that makes its owner happy.”

While the house, which is partially inspired by the owner’s childhood trips to Palm Springs, can definitely be described as midcentury, it doesn’t follow all the rules. For example, unlike most designs from that era, the walls of this home are quite tall, and were devised to display the owner’s expansive collection of modern art. Much of the house was designed around this collection, and the architects were aware of where each piece was going to eventually be placed during the process.

aia houston home tour 2022

Can you tell that the owner of this home has an expansive art collection?

Cool touches include the home’s slightly sloped roof, upheld by structural columns that provide support while also channeling rainwater from the roof. The underside of it, where it hangs over the building, has been covered in a playful printed graphic of lush green leaves and white magnolia flowers. It’s a whimsical design feature that makes the roof feel like a natural extension of the surrounding tree canopy.

Another cool feature is the home’s boomerang-shaped pool. The silhouette was a common motif used in classic midcentury design, and pools of this shape were everywhere in the 1950s, ’60s, and ’70s before more boring rectangular pools took over.

Although the home clocks in at over 6,000 square feet, Kyle says it actually has a small footprint for its lot size and for the neighborhood in which it’s located. And while the L-shaped home has a large primary suite, it only has two secondary bedrooms. According to Kyle, most of the homes in the area clock in at around four or five bedrooms. Although it’s not quite as palatial in scale as its neighbors, the home seems much bigger than it is due to its vertical scale.

The River Point Residence in Hunters Creek Village features a 2,000-square-foot basement that is designed to flood.

The River Point Residence

A flood-proof beauty with bayou views

This thoroughly modern home, which sits just a few hundred feet from Buffalo Bayou in Hunters Creek Village’s Riverbend neighborhood, replaced a classic midcentury home of a much smaller footprint that was flooded during Hurricane Harvey. Although the owners were devoted to their former home, it sat under six feet of water for over a week and was unsalvageable.

Instead of going with a similar design for their new home, the owners decided to do something much grander with the property. “They really wanted to focus on doing something modern that reflects their current lifestyle and aspirations,” says Mark Schatz of M + A Architecture Studio, the firm that designed the home. “The house was designed around integrating the site and the views from the back of the bayou.”

aia houston home tour 2022

The thoroughly modern home sports unrivaled views of Buffalo Bayou.

One of the coolest features of the new construction is that it’s one of only a handful of homes in the area that features a basement. You might think that a basement is a bad idea for a home that has previously flooded, but Schatz says that it is actually designed to flood. The 2,000-square-foot basement was created from cast-in-place concrete and has all the electrical high up, meaning that when it floods, the owners can simply power-wash everything and call it a day. The basement has space to park vehicles as well as an art studio and a workout room.

Atop the basement, a full six feet over where the waters reached during Harvey, is the main residence, which is connected to the basement by a stunning, three-story staircase that functions as the heart of the building. The guardrail system on the staircase is made up of vertical steel bars that vary in size to create a cool moray effect.

The home’s first-floor living spaces are open and flowing, and all the bedrooms are located on the upper level, including an expansive, resort-style primary suite and rooms for the children. The home boasts some pretty spectacular bayou views and extensive outdoor living spaces.

aia houston home tour 2022

The Joyce Residence in Lindale Park has undergone a modern update, but it still showcases a hefty dose of historic charm.

The Joyce Residence

A charming, historic bungalow with a modern facelift

This 1938 bungalow, located within Houston’s historic Lindale Park neighborhood, sports the traditional charm you can only get from historic properties—a charm that has been elevated with a new 900-square-foot addition. The home is owned by architect Eric Hughes of HR Design Dept, who lived in the property with his family through the duration of the construction process.

When Hughes and his wife bought the property 10 years ago, they did some light renovations. Their recent major update was kickstarted when they realized that, due to their expanding family, they just couldn’t live in a 1,000-square-foot space anymore.

aia houston home tour 2022

The home's new 900-square-foot addition includes an expansive primary suite.

Since Hughes and his family decided to remain in the home during the renovation, the expansion was designed to be self-contained, with all the work separated from the main house until the end of the project.

“I think the most challenging thing was figuring out the right way of tying the two structures together, doing it in a way that felt seamless,” Hughes says.

The addition, which houses a primary suite, is connected to the rest of the home through a united color palette of soft neutrals and through the addition of old growth pine shiplap ceilings throughout. Hughes is a fan of sustainable design, and the home also features narrow-plank flooring, a feature in many older homes, that Hughes salvaged from a property in River Oaks.

aia houston home tour 2022

This attic studio space is quite cozy, but the owner wanted to lean into its features.

His favorite room in the home is the new studio space upstairs. The room was built out underneath the attic, giving it some rather unusual angles and curves. Hughes decided to make them a feature of the space instead of trying to hide them.

“All of these angles start to create this volume that you’re moving inside. But it still has this really intimate scale to it because the ceiling is diving down on both sides. It feels like a space that’s been carved out,” he says. “We tried to be intentional about how everything worked together, and everything feels like it flows together.”

AIA Houston 2021 Home Tour Showcases Thoughtful Designs that Beautifully & Functionally Connect Indoor/Outdoor Living

mail.jpg

The weekend of October 23-24, the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Houston will hold its  2021 Annual Home Tour  featuring eight area homes selected by a jury of industry experts to represent the finest in new residential architecture. The two-day, self-guided tour is open to the public and offers attendees a rare opportunity to walk through and view an impressive assortment of privately owned residences designed by accomplished Houston architects. Open to the general public, the tour attracts approximately 3,000 people each year and operates with generous permission from homeowners, community cooperation, 200 volunteers, and architects eager to share each home's design.   “The annual fall AIA Houston Home Tour is back,” says Home Tour Chair Bob Robinowitz, AIA of McIntyre + Robinowitz. “The tour is a unique opportunity to see first hand, and go inside, a wonderful range of high quality homes. The ultimate success of each home is the result of an intense collaboration between each individual homeowner and their architects and builders. We especially want to thank the homeowners for opening up their homes to the public. AIA Houston architects will be present at each house to answer questions. We look forward to seeing you on the tour!”   This year’s selection committee is Rebecca Comeaux, AIA (Comeaux Architects), Craig McMahon, AIA (Craig McMahon Architects), Jim Poteet, AIA (Poteet Architects), and Tobin Smith, AIA (Tobin Smith Architect). The criteria used to select homes for the tour include design excellence, quality and craftsmanship, innovative design solutions and use of materials, and sustainability of design. The selection committee reviewed all submittals and made the final selection of homes to include on the tour.   "It’s one thing to pass by and admire these stunning homes from the outside, but an entirely heightened experience to step inside and be captivated by the remarkable thought and talent that went into each design,” adds AIA Houston Executive Director Rusty Bienvenue.   Watch a video  overview  of the AIA Home Tour.   FEATURED HOMES See map of featured homes.     1. The desire to preserve an exceptional live oak tree next door and to add garden space to the owner’s primary residence planted the seed for the Vassar Street Garden House. Careful site planning joined new and existing outdoor spaces to create an enclosure focused on outdoor living. Devoting a minimal footprint to interior living and sleeping preserved space for a greenhouse, potting shed, exercise pool and planting beds for a kitchen and flower garden.   At the front of the site, the greenhouse serves as the primary feature and is as equally prominent as the home. Passing through the main entry, the whole environment feels like a porch, a retreat for the senses with an emphasis on nature. A custom gate by artist George Sacaris opens the main entry to views through the house that showcase the magnificent oak tree, with accompanying views and access to the pool and garden spaces. Hardwood floors with custom-raised grain enhance the nature theme with a sense of touch in tune with the tree.    All interior spaces fixate on the durable Texas limestone and Galvalume-roofed exterior, with covered porches allowing indoor/outdoor living in any weather conditions. To further blur the distinction, indoor/outdoor furniture is utilized inside and a Bulthaup kitchen blends into wall materials in the minimalist living space. The thoughtful selection and placement of unique painting, sculpture and fixtures further convey the feeling of a nature sanctuary, while technologically advanced greenhouse skylights offer energy savings through automatic weather-sensing operation and shade. A steel fire pit and natural boulder seating around the centerpiece oak complete the outdoor-centric oasis.   2. Collaborative Designworks: “House 2344”  Thoughtful Design Celebrates Overseas Living Experiences and Complements Evolving Lifestyle 2344 Sunset Boulevard, Houston, TX 77005 - 4,144 square feet, Collaborative Designworks Photos, Credit Joe Aker

aia houston home tour 2022

A reflection of the owners’ unique personalities and their recent expat tour in Malaysia, House 2344 is the third project designed for this repeat client. The home was infused with elements acquired from living overseas and combined with materials and qualities from two previous projects. The result is an extraordinary home that was accomplished on a tight budget.   A series of inwardly sloping butterfly-type roofs are organized along a central spine above the circulation zone of the house. Main common areas and bedrooms key into this axis and are telegraphed up to the roof planes above. Complementing the owners’ lifestyle, the two-story structure flips the common arrangement of spaces, locating the living, dining and kitchen areas on the second floor, granting more privacy—even with large glass expanses. The soaring dynamic ceiling scape helps to define the open plan spaces below. The family's bedrooms are situated on the more serene and restful ground level. An abundance of natural light contributes to an airy atmosphere throughout the home, creating an ambiance that is clean, simple and modern.   The mass of the house is intentionally pushed away from the street side of the lot, allowing the pool and yard area to act as a buffer for the interior and to guarantee the exterior will always be open and sunny without any adjacent buildings. The owners enjoy a large pool featuring an “endless” lap jet, cultivate an extensive roof garden with herbs, vegetables and fruit, and maintain a chicken coop to ensure fresh eggs for use in eclectic home-cooked meals. Typical manicured lawns and feature trees were avoided in favor of natural wildflower landscaping that changes with the seasons.   3. Collaborative Designworks: Woodhead Double Serene, Comfortable “House Pair” Champions Privacy While Sharing Corner Lot, Common Functionality and Green Space   4411/4415 Woodhead Street, Houston, TX 77098 - 3,460 square feet (4411); 4,750 square feet (4415), Collaborative Designworks Photos :  4411 Woodhead Street, Credit Benjamin Hill Photography 4415 Woodhead Street, Credit Joe Aker

aia houston home tour 2022

Woodhead Double is the third exploration into “house pairs,” an alternate way to increase density within Houston’s urban center that is sized between the four townhouses that would normally be built on similar property and a single home occupying a large lot. For improved usability, this strategy employs a single common drive, shared mechanical area, and expanded yards achieved by swapping typically unusable setback space.   Modern, clean and simple, the exterior is composed of natural finish stucco, with accents of shou sugi ban charred cypress siding and textured brick walls and screens. The interior capitalizes on natural light and conveys an open feeling. Upon entering the north unit, visitors first notice the integrated koi pond that wraps from the entry to a private screened courtyard off of the dining space. Inside, they are greeted by terrazzo ground concrete floors and cork flooring. The vertical arrangement of the north unit allows for a split-level living, dining and kitchen area on the second floor, with the extra height in the living made possible by right-sizing the garage. Bedrooms at the top have large north-facing glass and balconies with downtown views. The top floor also features a children’s reading nook.   The corner house was purposefully arranged around a large, old oak tree to preserve its roots and offer views into the tree canopy from most of the primary spaces. The yard gate is operable to expand the children’s play area under the tree and is finished with water-jet-cut perforated aluminum panels in a pattern derived from the pixelated image of the tree’s limbs.   4. McIntyre + Robinowitz Architects: Lawrence Street Residence Expansive Views, Abundant Light and “Moments of Richness” Reveal Distinctive Quality 3007 Lawrence Street, Houston, TX 77018 - 4,300 square feet, McIntyre + Robinowitz Architects Photos, Credit Benjamin Hill Photography

aia houston home tour 2022

This home is situated in Garden Oaks, a centrally located neighborhood just north of Loop 610 and east of Shepherd Drive. The neighborhood’s original housing stock consisted of small, simple homes dating back to the 1940s, which are rapidly being replaced with two-story spec homes of varying styles, quelling a distinct flavor to the neighborhood. In response to these changing conditions, this contemporary home references mid-century designs found in surrounding neighborhoods.   The 80’ x 240’ lot is unusually deep—twice the depth of an average residential lot. The two-story massing is stepped back from the front of the house to align with other two-story homes on the block-face.    Acoustics played a major role in the building’s form. The U-shaped plan is designed to block noise within the pool courtyard from the heavily trafficked street one block to the west and the freeway two blocks to the south. The courtyard is on the north side of the house, providing views of the neighbor’s stately oak trees, and uses the two-story bedroom wing to shade the infinity-edged pool.   The glass exterior canopy, the large pivot door and expansive view greet visitors upon arrival, all within a defined entry area. The entry trellis, dining room ceiling, interior brick core, and screened porch were developed as “moments of richness,” characterizing the way they enhance the home’s design within an overall modest construction budget.   Reducing negative environmental impact, the home achieves sustainability by minimizing west fenestration, maximizing north windows, sealed construction, and high-efficiency air conditioning equipment.    5. aia houston home tour 2022

Located in a historic neighborhood within Houston Heights, the Allston Residence seeks a balance between contemporary character and the traditional architecture of neighboring bungalows. A classic gabled roof, horizontal siding and deep front porch create connections to the surrounding context while subtle anomalies establish the house’s modern identity. At the second floor, the facade tapers back at an angle to create a sense of depth. Recessed outdoor spaces provide depth at the north and south facades, pulling natural light and green spaces into the fun, bright interior.    At the ground floor, two parallel bars define the interior: enclosed private programs and a continuous sequence of open spaces for gathering. The porch creates an entry threshold that carries the open space through the house to the rear porch overlooking the backyard with a small pool. The seamless connection between kitchen, living and dining space fosters togetherness, fitting for a young family with a penchant for entertaining. Adjacent to the kitchen and comparable in size, a large bar facilitates the owners’ enjoyment for crafting exotic cocktails.   Subtle hints of color at the house’s exterior give way to vibrant saturated rooms as visitors move to more private areas. Green highlights the window trim and soffits outside, becoming more apparent where the facade folds playfully. On the ground floor, brightly colored boxes are integrated into millwork pieces. As visitors move upstairs, vertical surfaces for the stairway and skylights take on bolder colors. Daylight strikes these surfaces, projecting those colors onto adjacent walls and ceilings that reflect these hues with a sense of lightness.   6. studioMET architects: Jackson Residence Unmistakably Modern Home Co-mingles Simplicity with Sophistication 1116 Jackson Boulevard, Houston, TX 77006 - 3,120 square feet, studioMET architects Photos, Credit Luis Ayala

Located in Montrose, a neighborhood known for its own unique urban vibe, this home features a design focused on quality of space. The open-concept layout is just over 3,000 square feet with expansive windows connecting the home to the outdoor covered patio and pool area, ideal for summertime in Houston. The home’s exterior boasts strong horizontal lines with a simple composition of brick, wood and cement siding.   Upon entering the home, visitors are captivated by a two-story living space that is both dramatic and calming at the same time. The focal point of the room is a single large agave, centered perfectly in the middle of the entry courtyard and serving more as a sculptural piece of art than simply landscaping.   The kitchen and family room comprise the central core of the home, located at the rear of the house. An inviting covered patio and its own outdoor summer kitchen are easily accessed and perfect for Houston’s characteristically hot, humid days. Defining the main courtyard, a narrow lap pool is visible from every space on the first floor.   The second floor is all about keeping things simple, efficient and budget-conscious. The main bedroom suite of the home is located at the rear of the property to take advantage of the pool views and allow for separation from the public street at the front of the property. Two bedrooms and a shared bath along with the utility room complete the second floor spaces.   7. studioMET architects: Tangley Residence Reimagined, Elevated Dwelling Delivers Focus, Functionality and Uplifting Atmosphere 2325 Tangley Street, Houston, TX 77005 - 4,885 square feet, studioMET architects Photos, Credit Luis Ayala

Located on an urban lot in the Southampton neighborhood and within walking distance of the bustling Rice Village shopping district, the Tangley house is organized around an internal courtyard for privacy and entertainment. In the wake of Hurricane Harvey, Houston City Council passed overhauled regulations for new homes or existing homes being expanded in the 500-year floodplain. As a result, this structure was the first on its street to be elevated. The construction phase itself took place during the pandemic—uniquely creating additional challenges.   The newly elevated first floor was viewed as an asset and allowed a series of terraced elements from inside to outside to connect the dwelling to the site. Complementing the empty-nest owners’ lifestyle, the interior courtyard features a pool and accompanying water feature that serve as the central focus of the layout. Even the family dog’s lifestyle was specifically accommodated, with a windowed sleeping area and pet door for easy exterior access. The trendy impulse for open-plan living was also questioned. Instead, the modern but comfortable home consists of a series of warm and inviting spaces that serve various functions and offer a variety of moods and atmospheres, while maintaining a sophisticated, timeless appeal.    8. Organized around a shaded, breezy courtyard with a swim spa, the design of this home maximizes family living spaces. On the interior, large floor-to-ceiling windows provide broad views through the house into the courtyard and back, providing a sense of expansiveness and light. Brick walls at the exterior carry through into the home, adding to the sense of connection inside to outside, and creating a striking backdrop for the central staircase. Showers at the first floor and second floor primary bedroom suites open to the outside with large floor-to-ceiling windows screened with exterior landscaping and large interior planters, carrying the sense of connection and light into the private living spaces.    The front approach is terraced, gradually elevating visitors into the home above the 500-year flood plain. Above the front entry, a large two-story light-well unites the front stoop, upstairs study, owners’ bedroom and a private terrace to each other and the sky above, creating a moment of surprise and drama.   Designed for entertaining and hosting guests, the home feels comfortable and flows well. The kitchen accommodates the entire family in meal preparation and doubles as a pleasant work and entertaining space. Off the kitchen, the "Super Pantry" performs magic keeping family life organized and includes a pet-feeding station that makes it easier to keep the dog and cat out of each other's food. The children's bedrooms are adjacent to the upstairs family room, their primary play space, and strategically distanced from their parents' upstairs spaces. Even managing the cat’s litter box is more pleasant thanks to a "Litter Cave," a special two-sided cabinet that opens into the garage.   TICKETS (Valid for both days)   Advance purchase prices are available thru 10/19.   $25 Full-Tour Advance Ticket; or $35 on the weekend of the tour $20 Full-Tour Advance Ticket for Bike Riders; or $30 on the weekend of the tour $15 Full-Tour Advance Ticket for Children 12 and under $10 Single House Ticket (Single house tickets will not be available for pre-sale)   Full-Tour tickets may be purchased in advance online thru 10/19  here .   Full-Tour and Single House Tickets can be purchased at any of the participating houses during tour hours and are good both days of the tour.   After purchasing tickets online, please bring your email receipt to any of the tour homes (you may visit the homes in any order you choose); you will then receive a wristband that allows entrance to all of the homes.   The home tour is a nonprofit fundraiser and supports various AIA Houston initiatives throughout the year.
