History of the Spanish Riding School

The tradition of the Spanish Riding School goes back to the 16th century , when an open riding and tournament arena was built on today's Josefplatz, near the Hofburg Imperial Palace.  This Spanish Riding Stable was officially mentioned in 1565, making the Spanish Riding School the oldest classical riding school in the world.

From 1565 to 1569, during the reign of Ferdinand I, the stable castle was built by converting a residence intended for Ferdinand I into stables.  From then on, these housed the personal horses of the Habsburgs .  Today, the Riding School is one of the  most visited sights in Vienna .

Lipizzaner Horses

The breeding of Andalusian horses began under Archduke Charles II.  For this purpose he had them build a stud farm in Lipica, today's Slovenia, in 1580. In the centuries that followed, the Habsburg kings devoted themselves to breeding a breed that met the requirements of the classical ideal of horsemanship.  The best of them were sent to the  Hofburg Imperial Palace .  The name of the Lipizzaner horses was later derived from this Lipica stud farm.

New Riding Arena

After the riding arena was severely damaged during the second Turkish siege of Vienna, Emperor Charles IV had a winter riding school built in the Michael Wing of the Hofburg Palace from 1729 to 1735.  The magnificent winter riding school, which is now considered a baroque jewel, was designed by Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach and built by his son Emanuel Fischer von Erlach.

Since then, almost exclusively the breeding horses from the Lipica court stud farm have been used at the court riding school.

Spanish Riding School

The Spanish Riding School is a centuries-old institution in Vienna as it was founded in the 16th century with the aim of giving riding lessons to Viennese nobles. The site is located within the large Hofburg complex , the palace that was for centuries the residence of the royal family and the administrative centre of the city.

The Vienna Riding School was founded around 1572 and its fame is due to the fact that the tradition of classical riding as it was practised in the Renaissance at the Haute École has been preserved here to this day. The value of the equestrian art practised at the Spanish Riding School is such that it has been declared an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.

Built from the 16th century onwards, however, the School was completed in 1729 during the reign of Emperor Charles VI with the construction of the White Riding Hall , designed by architect Fischer von Erlach. Today, this hall is still open to the public and here one can watch the training and exhibitions of stallions.

The name Spanish Riding School is connected with the pure-bred Spanish horses from which the Lipizzaner breed, which originated in the small Slovenian village of Lipica, is partly derived. In the mid-16th century, Austrian Archduke Charles II purchased the village of Lipica with the aim of establishing a stud farm for horses that would be trained to pull carriages and for riding. Those horses were then taken to Vienna to be used at the Riding School and today the Lipizzaner breed is the one still used at the School, although the horses are now bred in the Austrian town of Piber.

Things to do at the Spanish Riding School

Visiting the Spanish Riding School in Vienna is a must for horse lovers and not only, as here you can discover the history and traditions of this ancient art. The heart of the visit is the stables in the building known as the Stallburg, one of the city’s most important Renaissance palaces that houses the real stars of the place: the Lipizzaner horses.

The tour can then continue with the discovery of the Winter Riding School , considered a true jewel of Baroque architecture boasting a majestic and imposing structure with a unique and original design. By climbing to the highest part of the hall, you can also admire a beautiful view of the city of Vienna. The Summer Riding School , on the other hand, houses one of the largest oval tracks in the world, testifying to how popular this discipline has always been in the city.

You can also watch the wonderful equestrian performances that are always truly spectacular, or take part in the morning training , which is also very scenic! During the morning training, you can see various exercises performed, but also admire the relationship between the ‘trainers’, i.e. the riders, and their Lipizzaners, who are trained through a strict course to become elegant and refined specimens.

Once the training is over, you can also see the trainer handing over a treat to his horse as a prize! The education of each stallion usually consists of three levels: the First Riding, which begins when the horse arrives at the School around the age of four, the Schooling Campaign when the stallion is instructed in gaits, and finally, the High School where perfection takes place. At the same time, riders also have to follow a strict training course that usually starts at a young age.

Attending a show at the Spanish Riding School

There are several tickets to visit the Spanish Riding School and to watch the morning training of the Lipizzaners or the evening shows. It is an unmissable stop not only for horse lovers, but also for history buffs: Lipizzaners are in fact the oldest breed of horses in Europe.

Morning training ticket

The best-selling ticket is to attend the morning training of the Lipizzaners and their jockeys, performed by grey fillies and the ‘white stars’, the most experienced stallions.

Training ticket + guided tour

For a few extra euros you can also take part in a guided tour of the building that houses the Riding School, as well as attend the training sessions.

Ticket for the Lipizzaner horse show

The most complete experience is certainly the show, both the ‘standard’ version and the famous Gala Show ; however, tickets must be purchased months in advance, as demand is very high.

Whilst in Vienna I knew I had to see the Lipizzaner stallions at the Spanish Riding School. Had it just been hubby and myself I would have probably bought the best seats in the house, but as we were with friends we decided on the €35 standing tickets. We were not disappointed. Yes, your view is restricted at times but so are the seats you are stood behind. The only people with unrestricted view are the ones with tickets at either end. To access the auditorium you enter by the door in the wall opposite the stables. There are some quite steep steps to climb too. Once inside we headed towards the middle and took our place behind some seats. The building is fabulous, with huge chandeliers and lots of white marble. The performance itself was nice and I’m so glad I got to see the Lippizaners in Vienna. It is a classical concert though and so do not expect these horses to be doing lots of jumps and tricks. It is all about the horsemanship and the control of the horses. I really enjoyed it and so did my hubby and our friends! Read more Written April 18, 2024

  • P5543TIjoshuat 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Budget-friendly compromise I booked the training session because, while I wanted to see the famous Lipizzaners, I thought the price tag for the show itself was too high. The training is ok if you just want to see the stallions but don’t expect a show. There is some very limited commentary in German and English over the tannoy. We saw two groups of stallions training - firstly a more experienced group and then some younger horses. Each group had half an hour, and I felt that I wouldn’t have missed anything if I’d left after the first half. I’d liken it to going to a gym to watch your sports team working out. I booked a standing ticket because I read a review which said the seats had a restricted view, but wish I had booked a seat. There are frequent announcements reminding that photography is not permitted, however many people were discreetly taking photos and videos without flash and sound effects so as not to disturb the horses and their riders. We were on the 2nd level and you could only see one side of the arena - you really needed to be at the ends to get a full view. Saying this the performers used both sides to demonstrate their skill. For a horse lover I would thoroughly recommend this. It lasted an hour and was very well done. You are not allowed to take any photos and the staff there will stop you. 6 Terrific Ways to See the Lipizzaner Stallions of Vienna In Real Life

  • 2.6K shares

As a rider, I’ve always wanted to see the legendary Lipizzaner stallions in Vienna.  Little did I know that when I visited, I would not only get to see a Lipizzaner horse show in Vienna, but also meet one of its famous stars.

The Lipizzaners are known as “the dancing white horses of Vienna.”  They train and perform at Vienna’s Spanish Riding School , the only school in the world to practice classical riding for over 450 years.

The Lipizzaner horses are so popular, there’s even a Disney movie about them.

Given their popularity, the Vienna Riding School offers a bunch of ways to see the horses and to learn more about the school.

Want to know which one is right for you?

To help you decide on the best way to see the Lipizzaner stallions in Vienna, I’ll share what I learned on my visit and review the pros and cons of each option.  Plus, I can’t wait to tell you about my “Lipizzaner moment.”

TABLE OF CONTENTS About the Spanish Riding School in Vienna Options for visiting the Spanish Riding School in Vienna: 1. Take a guided tour of the Spanish Riding School 2. About the Spanish Riding School in Vienna

see the lipizzaner stallions in Vienna, Spanish riding school

The Spanish Riding School is located in the Hofburg Palace in central Vienna, one of the best Viennese palaces to visit.  Built in the 13th century, it’s where the Habsburg royals ruled for several centuries.

So why is this very Austrian institution called the “Spanish” Riding School?  It’s named after the Spanish horses imported by the Habsburgs in the 16th century, which led to the famous Lipizzaner breed. They were considered  a symbol of the country’s military strength because the Austrian soldiers on horseback could outmanoeuvre their opponents.

The school is still a pretty traditional place.  In fact, it just admitted its first female rider in 2016.  During my visit, I met Hannah Zeitlhofer who started as a student at the school in 2008 – – that’s how long it takes to become a full-fledged rider.

As you can see, whether they are men or women, all riders wear a traditional uniform that includes brown tailcoats, white buckskin breeches, and bicorne-style hats,  the kind that remind you of Horatio Hornblower.

Options for visiting the Spanish Riding School in Vienna:

1. take a guided tour of the spanish riding school.

The one-hour guided tour gives you a behind-the-scenes look at the school.

You’ll see the baroque winter riding school, the world’s largest oval, the stables of the Lipizzan stallions and learn more about the horses and their history.

If the horses are in, you may see them in their stalls or walking the oval.  However, the horses do spend time training, touring and have summer vacation away on a farm, so there is no guarantee that you will see a Lipizzaner up close.

Tours are offered at several times in the afternoon on most days ( check the online schedule ) and must be reserved in advance.

This is the best way to learn more about the school and the horses, but not necessarily the ideal way to see the Lipizzaners.

Book your tour of the Spanish Riding School here .

2. Attend the Spanish Riding School morning exercises

Spanish Riding School in Vienna

The Lipizzaners’ morning exercises shows you the training of the riders and their horses in the beautiful Winter Riding School.

At the morning exercise, the horses and riders do relaxation exercises, practice dressage moves and target the strengthening of muscles.  It doesn’t normally include the spectacular “above-ground” leaps and exercises as these are highly demanding on the horses.

Morning exercises are between 10 a.m. and noon, and visitors can come and go anytime during this period.  Tickets are 15 Euros for an adult and cannot be booked in advance online with the School, however, you can buy in advance with Get Your Guide .  There is also a “Ticket Plus”, a combined ticket that gives you access to morning exercises and the guided tour.

This is the most affordable way to see the Lipizzaners in action, but it’s not the best option if you want to see the big tricks.

Get tickets to see the Lippizaners’ morning exercises here .

3. See the Lipizzaner horses at a Spanish Riding School Performance in Vienna

Spanish Riding School performance

I saw a Spanish Riding School performance in the Winter Riding School, called, “A Tribute to Vienna” with musicians of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra.  To me, the show epitomizes everything that is Vienna.

By the way, most of the performance take place in the evening, but it’s easy and safe to get to the School even if you’re traveling on your own, like me.  Vienna is a great city for solo travelers.

During the 70-minute show, the Lipizzaners perform their famous “balletic” moves to the tunes of Mozart, Strauss and others.  This includes all of the movements from the Olympic Grand Prix Dressage test, such as flying changes or the piaffe..  When horses canter, one of their front legs always steps ahead of the other.  With a flying change, they change it to the other leg while in the air.  I think I’ve achieved this only once in my riding career.

You can see the piaffe in the photo on the right below.  With this move, the horse performs a highly collected trot almost in one place – incredibly difficult to do.

The most spectacular part of the performance is the “airs above the ground.”  This includes the levade (photo left below) where the horse holds a position about 35 degrees from the ground, and the capriole (top photo) where the horse leaps in the air, kicking out with the hind legs.  During the “airs”, the riders don’t use stirrups.  That takes thighs of steel to stay seated.  It’s almost inconceivable to me when you imagine the power of the horse underneath them.  It took my breath away.

The School also offers a performance during certain times of the year with the Vienna Boys Choir.

In my view, a Spanish Riding School performance is the ideal choice if you want to see the Lipizzaner horses in Vienna, and everything they can do.

However, the shows are not offered all of the time (check the online schedule ), and you have to book well in advance.  Also, the tickets are on the pricey side.  Standing room tickets are 27 Euros with seated tickets costing from 53 to 140 Euros.  If you like the Lipizzaners though, it will be an experience well worth it.

4. See the foals perform in the summer

In the summer, you can see a Spanish Riding School performance called “Piber meets Vienna”.

Piber is the village where the stud farm is, the farm dedicated to breeding Lipizzaner horses.  When the famous stallions are on their summer break starting in July, you can see a one-hour show featuring the future stars – – the Lipizzaner foals.  With their mothers, the playful Lipizzaners will romp in the riding ring.  Elaborate historical carriages will also be displayed.

Ticket prices range from 13 to 48 Euros.

If you’re visiting Vienna in the summer time, this might be your best chance to see Lipizzan horses.  You can book tickets for Piber meets Vienna here .

5. Visit the Lipizzaner Stud Farm in Piber

Another option is to visit the Stud Farm , located in the village of Piber, a beautiful region of Austria about 2.5 hours southwest of Vienna by car.  There are 360 horses on the property.

The farm offers guided tours and rides in a  historical carriage drawn by Lipizzaners.

Between June and September, you can take a mountain tour where you’ll see young Lipizzaners at play in the mountain pastures.  You can also book a picnic beside the pastures.

In the winter, starting in January, you can take a special guided tour to see the new born foals.

This option is ideal for a family traveling outside of Vienna.

6. Ride a Lipizzaner

To be honest, this would be my top choice.  Technically, it’s possible…  But you have to buy one.

About 40 Lipizzaner foals are born at the farm in Piber every year, and not all of them qualify to perform at the Spanish Riding School.  This means that there’s a wide choice of horses for sale to Lipizzaner lovers around the world.

About the Lipizzaner Stallions in Vienna

Lipizzaner horse show

Meet N. Mercurio, my new bestie at the Spanish Riding School!

I was lucky to have a brief “backstage pass” just before his performance, so that I could get some photos for this post.  Normally, photos aren’t allowed at the school anytime the horses are present.

The name, “Lipizzaner”, comes from the original breeding farm that started with Spanish horses, in  Lipica (Lipizza in Italian) in what is now Slovenia.

The “N” in the name stands for Neapolitano, one of the eight foundation stallions that were bred to produce Lipizzaners.  As part of the tradition, the name, Mercurio, comes from his Mom.

Interestingly, Neapolitano was a bay (brown with a black mane).  Indeed, Lipizzaners are not actually white.  When they’re born, they’re usually black, brown or grey.  Their coat lightens over 7 to 10 years and they are called “greys”.

The Lipizzaners are known for their strong, elegant body, agility, intelligence, lively character and kind temperament – – just what I found when I was introduced to Mercurio.

The time I got to meet a Lipizzaner horse!

see Lipizzaner horses in Vienna

What a thrill to meet Mercurio, one of the world famous Lipizzaner stallions in Vienna!  I had goosebumps.

Up close, I was immediately struck by his beauty and the musculature of this athlete.

Plus, I was kind of in love.

Lipizzaner stallions in Vienna

I watched the stable master get Mercurio ready for his closeup.

Of course, the horse was already impeccably groomed.  During performances, the Spanish Riding School horses wear a traditional gold-plated breastplate and double bridle.  They carry the school’s iconic white saddle, which is a little bigger than a normal English saddle.

Mercurio was curious and quite interested in my visit.  “Who is this Canadian in my dressing room,” he probably thought.

We even had a little snuggle!  Definitely, a moment I won’t soon forget.

If you’re planning to visit Vienna, I hope this list will help you decide which of the options to see the Lipizzaner stallions at the Spanish Riding School is right for you.  It’s an experience you won’t want to miss!

Wondering if the standing room reservations are preferred over the seated ones for best viewing of the show?

I had seats, so I can’t speak for the standing room spots. Based on what I could see, I think there’s a pretty good view either way. The main difference is price.

All the pretty horses. I love pageantry and history with Lipizzaner stallions. It’s more than an animal show. It’s a walk through history. The way the preserve the bloodlines is astounding.

The breeding and record-keeping is pretty amazing. It’s still considered a rare breed and was almost extinct at one point. Thanks for reading!

Thank you Mirela! I hope you get a chance to see them on another visit.

So awesome! We got a chance to see them in a training session a number of years ago and that was a huge thrill. I cannot imagine being able to go backstage let alone get a snuggle with Mercurio … what a treat and special post.

Thanks so much Michael. I’m going to treasure that experience for a long time!

At 87 I have been a fan of the Lipizzaners for many years. I recently found and watched the Disney movie on my computer, made I think in 1953, with Robert Taylor about the saving of the horses at the end of World War II. There were two performances in the movie that were actually filmed in Vienna in the Winter Riding School. I sat watching these gorgeous creatures perform incredible feats and cried at their beauty and the fact that they came so close to being lost. Thank you for the marvelous pictures and all of the information. I cannot even imagine what it would be like to see one of the stallions “up close and personal”. I’m not sure I would be able to breathe!

I’m so glad to hear that you enjoyed the post. I definitely had goosebumps when I got to meet one of the horses. They’re just as beautiful as you imagine!

Visiting Vienna

The Lipizzaner Stallions

Head of a Lipizzaner looking out of its stables

The famous Spanish Riding School features the Lipizzaner horses (often called Lipizzan in North America), who trace their lineage back to the 1500s. The school only uses the stallions for performances.

Here’s how to see the horses in Vienna, together with a brief history of the breed’s association with the riding school, Austria and the Habsburg court.

  • What happens on a riding school tour?

How to see the Lipizzaners

Head of a Lipizzaner horse

(A Lipizzaner stallion in Vienna; photo taken with the kind permission of the SRS during a press tour)

Once in Vienna, you have a couple of options for actually viewing the stallions…

Ticketed options

The most frequent opportunity is the one-hour public training with commentary that takes place most weekdays in the same winter arena used for actual performances.

The riding school also offers guided tours through the stables, including an architectural special tour . Both alternatives get you right up close to the stallions.

And, of course, you have the (gala) performances themselves. ( More info on paid options)

Outdoor options

Chance (and rare) encounters with the Lipizzaners are possible in Vienna outside the stables or arena.

Either wait near the entrance to the stables or see if they’re using the paddocks in the Burggarten. Both locations are extremely central. ( More info on outdoor options)

The story of the horses

spanish tour vienna

(Karl II Franz, founder of the original Lipizzaner stud farm, in an anonymous and less than flattering early 18th-century painting, Wien Museum Inv.-Nr. W 2690, excerpt reproduced with permission under the terms of the CC0 licence)

So how did the white horses come to be associated with Vienna?

Cast your mind back to the occupation of Spain by the Moors, which began in the early 8th century and ended in full with the fall of Grenada in 1492.

One of the consequences of this long exposure to Moorish influence was cross-breeding of Arabic and Iberian horses.

The resultant “Spanish” horses proved particularly well suited to the needs of the classical horse rider’s art, combining elegance and strength with a noted ability to pick up the moves required.

Karl II Franz (1540-1590), a Habsburg Archduke and ruler of a collection of lands known as Inner Austria, must have been an admirer, since he decided to establish a stud farm in the late 16th century for breeding his own Spanish horses.

The chosen location was near Lipizza (aha!), the Italian name for Lipica (now in modern-day Slovenia).

Doors opened to the first influx of mares and stallions in the 1580s, and so began the long history of the Lipizzaner horse breed and its close association with the Habsburgs.

The Lipizza stud farm remained the breeding home of the horses for well over 300 years and a supplier of Lipizzaner horses to the court (and court riding school) in Vienna. But not without a few breaks; the authorities evacuated the animals to other Habsburg lands on occasion to avoid foreign armies and occupiers.

Then, in 1915, Italy joined the other side in WWI. This left the Lipizza farm perilously close to enemy territory.

As a result, the horses moved to Laxenburg in Austria and Kladrub in what is now Czechia. They never returned, since the land on which the Lipizza stud farm lay passed to Italy through the post-WWI Treaty of Versailles.

Austria (now a republic ) gave back some of the evacuated horses to the Italians, but used the rest to open a new stud farm at Piber: about 220km outside Vienna in the west of the Austrian province of Styria.

The Lipizzaners remained in Piber until WWII, when they relocated to Hostau in Czechoslovakia for safety reasons.

Young Lipizzaner stallions

(Young stallions at Piber. Each year, they spend the summer on a mountain pasture with the staff staying in an adjoining mountain cabin; image courtesy of and © the SRS; photo by Harry Schiffer)

In April 1945, the fate of the horses hung somewhat in the balance when Hostau came under threat from the advancing Red Army.

Fortunately for the Lipizzaners (and us), some American units got wind of the situation. They staged a relatively daring advance into the area and transferred the entire stock to safer territory.

The horses returned to Austria and eventually Piber, where they still have their home today (which you can visit).

Disney even made a film of the rescue incident in 1963…The Miracle of the White Stallions starring Robert Taylor.

The Wiener Kurier newspaper described the mission in their edition of November 3rd, 1945 (my translation):

The area around Pilsen is still being fought over so the area remains unsafe. A US unit received the order to save 250 mares with the aid of tanks […] The horses started their journey protected by the tanks. Their route took them through turbulent bandit territory into Bavaria and then on to Upper Austria.

The Piber stud still provides the stallions that live, train and perform as part of the Spanish Riding School in Vienna (the two institutions are part of the same organisation). The stables in Austria’s capital are right in the centre, just a trot across the road from the arena that hosts the training sessions and performances.

You also find the horses in Heldenberg in Lower Austria, which serves, for example, as a training centre, holiday location, and retirement home for the Spanish Riding School’s stallions. As with Piber, you can also visit Heldenberg.

The original stud at Lipica still breeds its own Lipizzaners and a few thousand can be found worldwide: North America has a Lipizzan association , for example. You can even buy a Lipizzaner from the Piber Stud farm, but it’ll typically cost you several thousand Euro.

P.S. The Lipizzaner stallions are not born with the famous white coat, but turn that colour after six to nine years. Only a very few retain a dark coat.
