The Speciality of Jog Falls

Jog falls is popular for its plunge from a height of 830 feet as four beautiful cascades, Raja, Rani, Roarer and Rocket. The Raja Fall cascades in one continuous flow to the depth of 250 m (830 ft). Halfway down, Roarer confronts it, which then gushes violently downwards to meet the Raja. The Rocket rushes downwards while the Rani flows in a quiet motion over the mountainside. Tourists can watch the spellbinding beauty of the Jog falls till the bottom of the hill from which it cascades from the steps at the viewpoint at the top. There are approximately 1,400 steps till the bottom of the hill from where tourists can view the waterfall.

Jog falls is an acclaimed major tourist attraction in Karnataka for being ranked as the 36th in the list of free-falling waterfalls. It is further claimed as the 490th in the world by list of waterfalls by total height and 128th in the list of single-drop waterfalls in the World by the waterfall database. Sahasralinga

by Steps Together · Published February 16, 2021 · Updated February 20, 2021

It was day 2 of our Uttara Kannada Sirsi trip. We got up early and started early in the morning by 7-30 by checking out from the hotel we stayed in Kumta. It was a busy day ahead. Our plan was to cover as many places as possible by the end of the day. The checklist included Devimane ghat viewpoint, Sahasralinga, Sonde mutt, Magod falls, Marikamba Temple at Sirsi , and finally Madhukeshwara temple of Banavasi . A pretty long list isn’t it? Let me spoil the suspense by revealing that we successfully visited all these spots. How did we manage? Follow this series and know it yourself :-).

Sahasralinga

As said before we started by 7-30am from Kumta as planned. We postponed the breakfast as it was too early and none of us felt the hunger yet. We decided to have breakfast at Sirsi town instead. Sirsi is 60 km from Kumta. It takes around 1hr 30 mins to reach the place via Devimane ghat road. It was surprising to see the sorry state of this route at a few stretches given that the road connects 2 major towns like Kumta and Sirsi.

Devimane Ghat Viewpoint

We reached Devimane Ghat’s viewpoint at 8-30 am and spent around 10 mins enjoying the beautiful view of the lush green mountain stretch from the place. We reached Sirsi by 9-15 am and ventured inside the town to have breakfast at Hotel Meenakshi Bhavan. It is a decent vegetarian restaurant to have breakfast. We found that the food was very tasty and the staff was nice. Please be advised that this hotel is located in a narrow street and there no place for 4 wheeler parking. We parked our car by the main road and walked a minimal distance to the restaurant.

Sirsi to Sahasralinga

Sahasralinga is just 14 Km away from Sirsi town. You need to travel about 12.5 km on scenic Sirsi Yellapura road. Just before Hulagola town, you need to take a left turn. Travel further 1.5 km on the more scenic road to reach the parking spot of Sahasralinga. There is ample space for parking for both two-wheelers and four-wheelers. Please note that you can visit Sahasralinga and the hanging bridge both by parking your vehicle here.

Sahasralinga is known for its 1000 Shiva Lingas that are carved on the rocks along the banks of the Shalmala river. According to the legend, one of the Swadi rulers, Arasappa Nayak, who ruled here from 1678-1718 AD, carved these lingas to gain successors to the throne. Another legend says that sculptors practiced carvings before the construction of various stone temples in this area under Swadi rulers.

Sahasralinga

Shalmala River

You need to climb down a few steps (roughly around 20 -30 steps to get near the river where Shivalingas are clearly Visible. Usually, this place is less crowded. Since we visited the place during the month of November water level in the shalmala river was fairly low. We got a good view of many Shivalingas submerged in the river. After spending a good amount of time enjoying the nature beside the river filled with Shivalingas and Nandis we headed back near the parking spot and went towards the Hanging bridge.

Shalmala River

Hanging Bridge

A hanging bridge was constructed across the Shalmala river in 2011. This bridge connects the Bhairumbe Hulekal village from Hulagol is Sirsi Taluk It provides a beautiful view of the Shalmala river and the Shivalingas present across the river.

Sahasralinga Hanging Bridge

This bridge connects about 14 villages of Sirsi and Bhairumbe grama panchayat. It reduces the distance to Sirsi from these villages by about 15 km. Very often you can find villagers riding bikes crossing this bridge. This place is a hot spot among young people as it is a perfect spot for portrait photography. After spending some time and crossing the hanging bridge to and fro we finally returned back to our car and set the map for our next destination: Sonde mutt.

Route we took

Live the experience.

Best way to experience the place is by watching it yourself 🙂

  • ABOUT DISTRICT

Uttara Kannada District is 5th Largest District of Karnataka State with abundant natural resources. The district has varied geographical features with thick forest, perennial rivers and abundant flora and fauna and a long coastal line of about 140 KM in length.

Uttara Kannada, also known as North Kanara or North Canara, is a Konkan district in the Indian state of Karnataka. It is bordered by the state of Goa and Belgaum District to the north, Dharwad District and Haveri District to the east, Shimoga District and Udupi District to the south and the Arabian Sea to the west. The city of Karwar is the administrative headquarters of the district.

In its 10.25 lakh hectares of total land, of which 8.28 hectares is Forest land. And only about 1.2 lakh hectares of land (roughly about 10%) is under agriculture / horticulture. Uttara Kannada was the home of the Kadamba kingdom from the 350 to 525. They ruled from Banavasi. After the subjugation of the Kadambas by the Chalukyas, the district came under successive rule of empires like Chalukyas, Rashtrakutas, Hoysalas and Vijayanagar empire. Famous Moroccan traveler Ibn Battuta is said to have stayed for a time in the district under the protection of Nawayath Sultan Jamal Al-Din at Hunnur. This place is presently known as Hosapattana and is located in the town of Honnavar. Ruins of an old mosque and its minaret can still be seen in the village. The district came under the rule of Maratha Empire in the 1750s and later part of Mysore Kingdom, who ceded it to the British at the conclusion of the Fourth Mysore War in 1799. It was initilally part of Kanara district in Madras Presidency. The district was divided to North and South Kanara districts in 1859. The British finally transferred Uttara Kannada district to Bombay Presidency in 1862.

After India’s independence in 1947, Bombay Presidency was reconstituted as Bombay State. In 1956 the southern portion of Bombay State was added to Mysore State, which was renamed Karnataka in 1972. Uttara Kannada was an ancient site of sea trade visited by the Arabs, Dutch, Portuguese, French and later the British. Ibn Battuta passed through this route during one or more of his journeys.

Significant and picturesque, the Sadashivgad fort of historical importance is now a popular tourist destination located by the Kali river bridge, which has been built at the confluence of the river and the Arabian Sea. The renowned Bengali poet and Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore, who visited Uttara Kannada in 1882, dedicated an entire chapter of his memoirs to this town. The 22-year-old Rabindranath Tagore stayed with his brother, Satyendranath Tagore, who was the district judge in Uttara Kannada. There is a substantial amount of Chardo families in this area as they had migrated due to the persecution of the Portuguese in Goa.

Cintacora, also known as Chitrakul (Chittakula) and Sindpur, was known to the Portuguese as a very old port. When Sadashivgad was built in this area, the village also came to be known by that name. Pir fort, named for the Dargah of Shahkaramuddin, was captured and burnt by the Portuguese in 1510. The creek at the mouth of the Kali River was a trading center which came into greater prominence after Sadashivgad was built and the Portuguese realised the advantages of its sheltered harbor.

In 1638 a rival English trading body, the Courteen Association, established a factory at Uttara Kannada (actually the village named Kadwad, situated 6 kilometres (3.7 mi) eastwards on the banks of the Kali river). It was a trade port frequented by traders from Arabia and Africa. Baitkhol port (the current civil port of Uttara Kannada) was famous for its natural harbor. The name Baithkhol is Arabic term, Bait-e-kol, meaning bay of safety. Muslin was the chief commodity purchased but Uttara Kannada was also a source for Pepper, Cardamom, Cassier and coarse blue cotton cloth. Situated on India’s west coast, 50 miles south-east of Goa, Uttara Kannada was noted for its safe harbor. In 1649 the Courteen Association united with the British East India Company and Uttara Kannada became a Company factory.

Kingdom of Mysore

In the Treaty of Mangalore signed in 1784, between Tipu Sultan and the East India Company, one finds reference to Uttara Kannada and Sadashivgad written as Carwar and Sadasewgude respectively.

The British Empire

The British made Uttara Kannada their district headquarters in 1862. Since 1862, the time from which it came under Bombay Presidency, Uttara Kannada was described as a first rate harbor between Bombay and Colombo.

Maratha Empire

Uttara Kannada was a part of the Maratha Empire during the 18th century. After the defeat of the Marathas in the Third Anglo-Maratha War, it became a part of British territory. It was a part of the Bombay Presidency until 1950. The languages spoken here are Kannada, Konkani, Tulu and Marathi. The cultural pattern of the people has been influenced by Northern Karnataka and Maharashtra.

Uttara Kannada is one of the major tourist districts in the state. Uttara Kannada district is the land of rivers. The main rivers are Kali, Gangavali, Aghanashini, Sharavati. The other rivers are Venktapur and Varada. These rivers form many waterfalls; the famous waterfalls include Jogfalls, Unchalli falls, Magod falls, Shivaganga falls, Lalguli and Mailmane waterfalls.

Unlocking Uttara Kannada: Karnataka’s next frontier in medical tourism

uttara kannada tourism

Bengaluru, May 7 (FN Bureau) Uttara Kannada district is on the cusp of a groundbreaking development set to transform its healthcare accessibility. Sudeeksha Super Speciality Hospital, to be built in the sprawling Honnavar taluk, is poised to emerge as a beacon of medical excellence, addressing the longstanding healthcare needs of the region. Despite its status as one of Karnataka’s largest districts, Uttara Kannada has grappled with a stark absence of emergency and specialised medical services. For years, residents and visitors have endured arduous journeys exceeding 250 kms to access critical healthcare in neighboring cities like Mangaluru, Manipal, or Goa. In an interview with UNI, Dr. Subramanyam Sharma, grandson of former President Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, shared insights into the transformative impact of the hospital. “The hospital will usher in a new era of advanced medical care within the district,” he stated, emphasizing its role in eliminating the necessity for residents to seek treatment elsewhere for serious health concerns.

Dr. Sharma highlighted the hospital’s cutting-edge medical facilities and highly skilled medical professionals, positioning it to revolutionize healthcare provisions in Uttara Kannada. Moreover, Dr. Sharma underscored Uttara Kannada’s strategic significance as an emerging hub for medical tourism. With India attracting over 2 million patients annually from nearly 80 countries, the region’s scenic beauty and tranquility offer an ideal backdrop for holistic rejuvenation and well-being. A collaborative endeavor, backed by an initial investment of Rs 120 crores, is underway to realise this vision. Situated across seven acres of picturesque land at Shree Veeranjaneeya Sabha Bhavan of Shree Kshetra Angavanakis, the proposed hospital represents a pioneering initiative in bolstering healthcare infrastructure within Uttara Kannada.

The hospital will be jointly developed by esteemed entities including Shree Veeranjaneeya Mahasamsthanam, Hemapura Mahapeetham, Shree Kshetra Bangaramakki, and Sudeeksha Health Care Private Limited, Bengaluru. The ceremonious laying of the hospital’s foundation stone is scheduled for May 10, with esteemed dignitaries such as Shree Shree Maruti Guruji and Dr. Subramanyam Sharma Gouravaram gracing the occasion. With its imminent inauguration, the hospital stands as a testament to Uttara Kannada’s unwavering commitment to advancing healthcare standards. Equipped with state-of-the-art medical technology and bolstered by a cadre of proficient professionals, the hospital is primed to address the diverse healthcare needs of Uttara Kannada and beyond, heralding a new era of medical excellence in the region.

Gynecologist on mission to 'deliver' Uttara Kannada LS seat to Congress

Bengaluru, May 4 (PTI) BJP leader Anantkumar Hegde represented Uttara Kannada Lok Sabha segment in Karnataka for six terms and now gynecologist Anjali Nimbalkar is putting up a spirited fight seeking to turn the tide and "deliver" it for the Congress.

Dr Nimbalkar is taking on former Karnataka Assembly Speaker Vishweshwar Hegde Kageri, who replaced Hegde, in this BJP stronghold.

A former Congress MLA, she lost the Assembly elections from Khanapur in Belagavi district last year.

The 62-year-old Kageri, a six-term MLA and a former minister, was also defeated in the Assembly polls from Sirsi.

"In the past 30 years, the voice of Uttara Kannada was not spoken and not even a single question was asked in the Parliament," Nimbalkar said in an apparent dig at Hegde.

If elected, she said her focus is to address the local issues related to forest dwellers, getting them "patra" for their own land -- a battle they have been fighting for long.

Also on her priority list is getting a multispecialty hospital in Kumta as per people's demand, generating employment and focusing on tourism for the overall development of Uttara Kannada.

"Issues related to forest dwellers -- they want a 'patra' for their own land -- we will try and put forth these issues in the first session itself and we will see to it that maximum applications which are pending with the Central government get cleared during the first session itself," she told PTI in an interview.

"So, our thing is that at least 50 per cent of the jobs should be given to the local Kannadigas in the Central schemes which are implemented in the district," she said.

Noting that Uttara Kannada has a combination of both beaches and temples, Nimbalkar said the district can be developed internationally in a much higher scale than "what actually Goa or Kerala is."

The Congress candidate is also banking on the five guarantee schemes launched by the Siddaramaiah-led government in Karnataka and the promises made by party in its manifesto at the national level.

Responding to a question, she expressed happiness that the Congress has fielded a total of six women candidates out of 28 Lok Sabha constituencies in Karnataka.

While campaigning, Nimbalkar said she was overwhelmed to see a large number of people, especially women, turning up for her rallies despite the intense heat in Uttara Kannada.

"They are very happy that the Congress has given a woman candidate and an educated candidate who herself is a doctor and a gynecologist. So they are excited that, yes, she can be our voice in the Parliament who can fight for our rights," the 47-year-old said.

"I have worked as an MLA (Khanapur), so they have seen my work in the Assembly and the expectations are like, yes, she will be the one who will be speaking for us and that faith is seen in their eyes," she said.

Nimbalkar strongly believes that when women enter any field, it brings a different perspective - be it in terms of management, policy formulation or even as homemakers.

Uttara Kannada is among the 14 constituencies going for polls in Karnataka under second phase on May 7.

Karnataka has 28 Lok Sabha seats and the first phase of polling was held on April 26.

While campaigning, Nimbalkar said she was overwhelmed to see a large number of people, especially women, turning up for her rallies despite the intense heat in Uttara Kannada.

“They are very happy that the Congress has given a woman candidate and an educated candidate who herself is a doctor and a gynecologist. So they are excited that, yes, she can be our voice in the Parliament who can fight for our rights,” the 47-year-old said.

“I have worked as an MLA (Khanapur), so they have seen my work in the Assembly and the expectations are like, yes, she will be the one who will be speaking for us and that faith is seen in their eyes,” she said.

Nimbalkar strongly believes that when women enter any field, it brings a different perspective – be it in terms of management, policy formulation or even as homemakers.

Uttara Kannada is among the 14 constituencies going for polls in Karnataka under second phase on May 7.

Karnataka has 28 Lok Sabha seats and the first phase of polling was held on April 26. PTI AMP RS KH
