15 Best Things to Do in Sydney (Nova Scotia, Canada)

The largest city on Cape Breton Island, Sydney is home to the island’s main port, making it the hub of the entire island. The former steel and coal mining city is now a major tourist destination, with remnants f its industrial past still being seen today.

Sydney has some very unique shops and services that are found nowhere else on the island. It is also filled with historic sites and some stunning scenery.

It wasn’t until the fall of the steel industry that Sydney became a tourist destination and is an exceptionally fantastic base for exploring the entire Cape Breton Regional Municipality. Here are the 15 best things to do in Sydney and its surrounding communities.

1. See the world’s largest fiddle

World’s Largest Fiddle

Sitting in front of the Joan Harriss Cruise Pavilion on the Sydney waterfront is the largest fiddle in the world! The fiddle stands tall at 18-metres and is hard to miss.

Day or night, the fiddle can be seen with lights keeping it well lit in the evenings. You will definitely want to take photos of the fiddle and even take a typical souvenir photo of yourself standing next to it.

The pavilion itself is also quite a unique site, as it is a lovely modern curved buildings. It is multi-purpose venue that is used for concert performances, tradeshows and conventions.

2. Learn about the history of the community

Cape Breton Centre For Heritage & Science

The Cape Breton Centre for Heritage & Science focuses on the social and natural history of Cape Breton. Visit the museum and learn all about the history of the community.

The museum features exhibitions that demonstrate the heritage, culture and science of the area with permanent and travelling collections. It also offers special programs and events throughout the year.

Kids can also enjoy visiting the museum, as it features an area just for them in its Discovery Corner. The museum is located on George Street right in the heart of downtown Sydney.

3. Live in the 18th century

Cossit House

Cossit House is one of the city’s oldest houses and also happens to be one of the oldest buildings on the entire island! It was built in 1787 and today depicts what life was like in the 18th century.

The house is now a living museum that celebrates the Gaelic culture and history in Nova Scotia. This is shown through the homes furniture and furnishings, as well as its costumed interpreters.

If you really want the full experience, take part in hands-on activities like lace-making, candle-making, butter-churning and weaving.

4. Walk along the coast

Bras d’Or Lakes

The scenic Cabot Trail is a must for anyone visiting Sydney. The trail is not in the city itself, but just a mere 45 minute drive away.

This is one of the most famous trails in the country, and all-in-all takes around 5 days to hike. Portions of it can be enjoyed on a day trip.

The trail in the Baddeck area will take you along the beautiful Bras d’Or Lakes where you can enjoy some spectacular scenery. Then hike along the coast of St. Anns Harbour and follow the trail as far as you can.

5. Explore Baddeck

Baddeck

If you are visiting Sydney you should definitely take a side trip to Baddeck, which is home to some great attractions. Tourism is strong here, especially because of the Cabot Trail, but there is much to see beyond that.

Explore the village and visit the famous Alexander Graham Bell National Historic Site; former home to scientist and telephone inventor Alexander Graham Bell. The village is also home to plenty of small shops and a nice lakeside area.

If you are a golfer, the award-winning Bell Bay Golf Club is located here. Finish the day off by dining on amazing fresh lobster or mussels.

6. Have a picnic

Petersfield Provincial Park

Overlooking the Sydney Harbour just opposite the city is the Petersfield Provincial Park. This is a picnic park with picnic areas overlooking the water.

Pack a picnic lunch and enjoy the stunning views of the water and downtown Sydney. The park also features traces of four cultural periods that date back from the late 18th to the mid-20th century.

After lunch enjoy walking or cycling along its extensive trail network. There are seven kilometres of trails at the Petersfield Provincial Park, which vary in difficulty.

7. Visit artisan studios

Cape Breton Artisan Trail

The best way to immerse yourself in the lives of local artisans is to visit them right in their studios or workshops. The Cape Breton Artisan Trail Map is the best guide for doing this.

Grab a map or download one from the internet and follow the trail to meet and learn about local artisans. Meet the artists and talk to them about their craft and maybe even purchase an item to bring home.

There are painters, pottery designers, quilt makers, wood workers, jewellers and more. You can even visit chocolatiers, soap makers and jam makers.

8. Take a workshop

Cape Breton Centre For Craft & Design

Speaking of arts and crafts, it is also possible to take a workshop. The Cape Breton Centre for Craft & Design offers workshops for both adults and kids.

Learn how to paint, cast silver jewellery or the technique of mocha diffusion. Workshops can last half a day or a full day.

You can also sign up to learn from a local artisan right in their workshop. Learn how to dye fabric, experience the art of glass blowing or go on a kayak ride to paint some incredible landscapes.

9. Hit the casino

Casino Nova Scotia

Since opening its doors in 1995, Casino Nova Scotia – Sydney has been a major hit for both tourists and residents. The casino has over 250 slot machines as well as gaming tables like blackjack, roulette and Let it Ride.

The casino also has poker tables for those that want to test their poker skills. To join the poker room you must sign up in advance.

Take a break from gambling and enjoy a meal at the onsite Celtic Junction restaurant. Come on a Thursday for a barbeque buffet, Friday for all you can eat lobster and ribs, or Monday for half price Fish and Chips.

10. Learn about religion

St Patrick's Church

Not only is the St Patrick’s Church the oldest Roman Catholic Church on the island, but today it is a museum. The museum’s main goal is to represent the religious history of the city.

The church was built between 1828 and 1830 in the Gothic Revival style. It was established as a museum in 1966, housing artefacts of religious importance.

The church itself is quite magnificent and worth visiting even if you are not interested in religion. It features original hand-hewn beams, Gothic windows, cut stone around the windows and doors, a tower with cupola and dominating door openings.

11. Wander around a fortress

Fortress of Louisbourg

Around 30 minutes to the southeast of Sydney is town of Louisbourg and the world-renowned Fortress of Louisbourg. The French fortress was seized not once, but twice, which helped create today’s Canada.

The National Historic Site is made up of ruins together with a reconstruction of one quarter of the fortress as it was at the height in the 1740s. Wander around the fortress either on a guided or self-guided tour and learn about its history.

There are demonstrations that explain the weaponry at the time, in addition to puppet shows that are great for the kids. Walk along Main Street Louisbourg, visit the Fortress Chapel and take photos of the King’s Bastion Barracks.

12. Tour a mine

Cape Breton Miners’ Museum

The Cape Breton Miners’ Museum sits along the coast of Glace Bay, just to the east of Sydney. It plays tribute to the region’s coal mining history, complete with a tour of the underground mines.

Tour the mine with a retired miner who is now a guide for the underground Ocean Deeps Colliery. Tour times vary, though if this is a must for you, you can book a tour of the mine online.

Exhibits in the museum itself focus on the geological development of the island’s coal field. This is done through tools, equipment and stories of the miners.

13. Honour Sydney’s immigrants

Whitney Pier Historical Society Museum

The Whitney Pier Historical Society Museum is a community museum that honours the people who came to Sydney from all over the world to work here. The area became home to many immigrants, most of whom worked in the steel industry.

The museum demonstrates the rich, multi-cultural heritage of Sydney, which is still strong today. The museum’s collection includes scrapbooks, photographs and newspaper clippings from both the Sydney Steel Corporation and the war years.

There is also a gift shop in the museum that sells unique gifts. Visit the Whitney Pier Historical Society Museum from June 1st to August 29th.

14. Go to the market

Cape Breton Farmers’ Market

For nearly 30 years the community has been running the Cape Breton Farmers’ Market. The market started as a seasonal outdoor market, but today it is a year-round indoor market that sees thousands of visitors every week.

There are around 50 vendors at the market selling not only fresh fruits and vegetables, but also prepared foods like crepes, breads, sausages and pastries. There are also foods to take home, like jams, honey and beer nuts.

If you want to shop for local crafts, the Cape Breton Farmers’ Market also features booths run by local artisans. Walk away with handmade jewellery, body scrubs, cutting boards and quilts.

15. Discover the Membertou Community

Membertou Heritage Park

The two hectare Membertou Heritage Park lets you discover the history of the Membertou people. The site has both indoor and outdoor exhibits and gives you first-hand experience of the rich-culture of the community.

A tour guide will walk you through the park and tell you about the unique history and culture of the community. The park does its best to honour the spirituality and strength of the Membertou people.

Once you finish the tour, head to the gift shop to purchase some unique Aboriginal art and crafts. The shop also carries contemporary Mi’kmaq arts and crafts.

This was our 7th trip with Insight and this was a nice paced tour of the Maritimes. The tour director was excellent as well as the coach driver. As long as my wife and I can keep traveling we'll be going with Insight.

The wonders of the Bay of Fundy tour was the best tour I’ve ever been on. We were a small group who enjoyed each other’s company and shared many varied and interesting experiences. As a solo traveler I was welcomed by everyone in the group and never felt on my own. Our tour director, Eunice, was welcoming, knowledgeable and went the extra mile to ensure we really experienced the local culture and delicacies. Our coach driver, Hank, who was also welcoming and knowledgeable, had a quietly confident manner which made you feel extremely safe when on the road. He also went the extra mile to ensure we got the most out of every experience. I would highly recommend this tour.
Very interesting stops, great commentary, excellent bus & driver. I signed up to see the tidal bore, but found the historical stops to be just as interesting.

Luc was the best tour guide ever. He kept our group on time and informed. Every stop was interesting, and the hotels and lodges were very good.
My husband and I did the tour of the Martimes in Nova Scotia. It was beautiful country. Our tour guide, Louise, was fantastic. She is so kind and caring; she is an amazing safe driver. She's always there for you. The only thing I didn't like about the trip was the motel in Baddeck. It was so old; musty smelling. Needs a total renovation. Everything about it was pretty awful. No-one on the trip was happy with this hotel. Other than that, we did enjoy the rest of the trip. the other hotels were fine. The Picnic Louise arranged was a lot of fun and the hike was awesome on the Cabot trail.

Trafalgar

  • Excellent - 1,889 reviews for Nova Scotia tours
Fantastic trip. Well organised and friendly, approachable staff. Was so easy to see so much more than we could have organised on our own. Met some lovely people. So much fun! Will definitely do a tour again and highly recommend.
Absolutely fantastic tour guide, dexterous coach driver !!

Collette

  • Good - 177 reviews for Nova Scotia tours
I had a great experience on this Colette tour with Bernadette and Dave. They were excellent guides and drivers, and the tour was well-organized. I would recommend it.

Contiki

  • Excellent - 5,345 reviews for Nova Scotia tours
Please beware of this tour as many things are not included: Bike tour PEI didn’t happen Walking tour in Moncton and Halifax did not happen on our tour. And lastly please consider this as if I knew this before I would NOT have booked this trip. If you do not do the rafting “ as an optional activity” they literally don’t have anything else for you to do for three hours. Our tour guide went rafting and left the majority of the group behind. The driver was kind enough to drop as off at a mall to occupy our time. I did not pay that much money to sit in mall. I wanted to see the maritimes. Very disappointed in Contiki be
Very safe and well organized

Tours of Distinction

Tours of Distinction

  • Good - 38 reviews for Nova Scotia tours
We had a fine experience with the Tours of Distinction trip to Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island, which began and ended in Ellsworth, ME. The tour director, Julie, did an excellent job, the bus driver was pleasant and provided a safe trip, and the local guides with whom the tour contracted helped our group understand local history and culture. Especially helpful to me was learning about Acadian history: the Acadian roots in southern France, British expulsion of them from Atlantic Canada, and their eventual return to the Maritimes. The one piece of history I wish had been discussed more was that of the Gaelic settlers. Given the name of the province, Nova Scotia ("New Scotland"), it would have been helpful to hear more of their history in the area.
Positive: Angelina, the bus driver, made our trip. She was the best part, to be honest. Negative: Communication prior to the trip, not knowing what to expect in detail, food, the bus leaked, No OFFICIAL tour guide, and no wifi on the bus. All in all, we all enjoyed ourselves and made the best of it. However, I would not travel with this company again.

  • 10 fun things to do in Halifax, Nova Scotia
  • 10 fun things to do in coastal New Brunswick, Canada
  • Newfoundland & Labrador: 10 fun things to do

We always like to hear from locals who have suggestions on what visitors can do during a day trip to a cruise port. So we asked the folks at Cape Breton Tourism for their suggestions of top activities in Sydney, a charming coastal community in northeast Nova Scotia.

While the province's capital of  Halifax attracts more ships, Sydney gets a fair number of ships from Holland America, Royal Caribbean, Norwegian, Celebrity Cruises, Silversea, Oceania and elsewhere (here's a schedule of ship visits ).

Sydney is a small village in the northeast corner of Nova Scotia (click for full map).

Travelers to Atlantic Canada know the island of Cape Breton as a magical travel destination and the port of Sydney as its gateway. Renowned for its beauty and unique Celtic music and culture, Sydney offers visitors a mix of natural beauty, culture and history.

Originally founded in 1785 by British Loyalists fleeing the perils of the American Revolution, the mineral-rich area attracted immigrants from a myriad of ethnic and cultural backgrounds. To this day, Sydney remains a haven of multiculturalism.

Here are 10 top things to do in Sydney, Nova Scotia .

Cossit House, part of the Colonial Town of Old Sydney, founded by Loyalists during the American Revolution.

Take a guided walk of historic Sydney

Join a relaxed walking tour of the Colonial Town of Old Sydney, founded by Loyalists during the American Revolution. Six buildings, still standing, were constructed in the late 1700s and another two were built at the turn of the 19 th  century. All can be seen within a two-block radius, just minutes from the Joan Harriss Cruise Pavilion where you disembark. You can visit four museums; St. Patrick’s, the oldest Roman Catholic Church in Cape Breton; Cossit House, built in 1787; and Jost House, offering interesting exhibits from this same period. Homemade refreshments add a touch of local hospitality to your final stop at the Cape Breton Centre for Heritage and Science.

Louisbourg National Historic Site.

Visit Fortress Louisbourg

Step back in time to 1744 and experience the Fortress of Louisbourg National Historic Site , a thriving seaport and capital of Ile Royale (Cape Breton Island). The Fortress of Louisbourg is the largest historical reconstruction in North America, where visitors are asked by costumed interpreters to declare their allegiance to 1744 colonial France. It contains a wealth of cultural resources and landscapes reflecting the military, commercial, fishing and settlement activity that occurred here from 1713 to 1768. They contribute to telling a significant story in a defining period of Canada's history — the concluding period of Anglo-French rivalry for control of eastern Canada. The fortress was one of the busiest harbors in North America during the 18 th century and one of France’s key economic and military centers in the New World. Today, it stands as North America’s largest historical reconstruction.

The 43-acre Highland Village Museum is North America’s only living history museum for Gaelic language and culture.

Head to Highland Village

The Scots arrived in Nova Scotia beginning in the late 1700s and they found Cape Breton to be so much like home that they put down roots and stayed. The Highland Village in Iona is a living history museum and cultural center that celebrates the Gaelic experience in Nova Scotia. It sits on a 43-acre hillside village that overlooks the world-renowned Bras d’Or Lakes. Nova Scotia’s rich Scottish history comes alive with costumed staff, farm animals, period buildings and artifacts. There is something here for all ages!

The Low Point Lighthouse at the northeast entrance to Sydney Harbour has been operating since 1938.

Take a drive up the Sydney coast

The tour begins with a brief overview of historic Sydney, founded in 1785. Then you’ll drive through the historic North End, Wentworth Park and Whitney Avenue, and on to the Sydney Steel Mill and the International Coal Pier, which date back to the early 1900s. The coastal drive provides a scenic view of Sydney Harbour, a major convoy assembly point during World War II. A brief stop will be made to Whitney Pier Historical Museum dedicated to the 55 different ethnic groups that settled this area. You will also view the restored Fort Petrie Battery, built to protect the port and fleet from enemy attack. In the town of New Waterford, visit Colliery Lands Park located on the site of two abandoned coal mines and an operating coal-fired power plant.

Bras d'Or Lakes teem with wildlife, scenic panoramas and boat tours to take them in. (Click to enlarge.)

Kick back at Bras d’Or Lake

Actually inlets of the sea,  Bras d’Or Lake  is lined with teeming wildlife, panoramic lookouts and boat tours. It was on these lakes, frozen in winter, that Alexander Graham Bell’s Silver Dart made the first powered flight in the British empire. The view from St. Ann’s Lookoff is spectacular and tourists are given a glimpse of the world-famous Cabot Trail. If you are interested in beauty, then this tour is for you!

A poster from the Wagmatcook Aboriginal Art Festival at the Wagmatcook Culture & Heritage Centre.

Catch up on local Canadian culture

View artifacts from the days of the coal mines and the steel plant and displays from Canada's native communities set against the backdrop of the region's musical and cultural history. Free admission! Learn about the history, heritage and culture of the Mi'kmaq people through educational and interactive experiences at the Membertou Heritage Park in Sydney. Or experience storytelling events by aboriginal spiritual leaders at the Wagmatcook Culture & Heritage Centre in Cape Breton.

The Alexander Graham Bell National Historic Site

Pay a call on the Alexander Graham Bell site

Just an hour away from where you disembark, the Alexander Graham Bell National Historic Site of Canada contains the largest collection of Bell's artifacts and inventions, set in one of Canada’s most beautiful and charming towns. The museum is designed as an exhibit complex where models, replicas, photo displays, artifacts and films describe the fascinating life and work of this legendary figure. Special events such as "Harvest Home" complement the offering of activities on this site, situated on 25 acres of landscaped grounds overlooking scenic Bras d'Or Lake and Baddeck Bay.

The Cape Breton Miners’ Museum in Glace Bay pays tribute to the contribution of the region’s coal miners and coal mining industry.

Turn back the clock at the Miners Museum

Located on one of the most picturesque coasts of Cape Breton Island, on a 15-acre site filled with wild roses and grasses, the Cape Breton Miners Museum pays tribute to this region's long and rich history of coal mining. It is home to profound stories of miners and their families and the resources that helped build a nation. While visiting, don't miss an underground tour of the Ocean Deeps Colliery, a coal mine located beneath the museum building. Retired coal miners are your guides for this excursion underground — they promise to entertain and inform you as they've done with countless visitors over the years.

Fort Petrie Military Museum chronicles the fortifications built before WWII to defend Sydney Harbour against a German attack. (Click to enlarge.)

See Fort Petrie Military Museum

Sydney Harbour was extremely significant in the Second World War (1939-45) conflict.  Aside from the steel and coal production of the area, both very important commodities, Sydney was the home of the Royal Navy in the event of a German invasion of the British Isles and the assembly point of the slow convoys traveling to war besieged England. Fort Petrie Military Museum honors this period and is one of seven fortifications that were located along Sydney Harbour during World War II to protect the harbor and convoys from enemy submarines. Today the site of Fort Petrie offers visitors a two-story underground, two WWII gun emplacements and a museum with guided tours of the site. Fort Petrie is located along the Colliery Route on 13 acres of beautiful land. A viewing platform offers a panoramic view of Sydney Harbour, various shore birds, eagles etc.

The Joan Harriss Cruise Pavilion, right on the Sydney waterfront, puts on concerts, trade shows, conferences and more.

Visit the Joan Harriss Cruise Pavilion

10 The Joan Harriss Cruise Pavilion, steps away from where you disembark from your ship, features shopping boutiques, an art gallery, quality craft market, full service information center, Internet access, Ceilidh Fiddle Bar and local cuisine. It's a great place to relax and unwind before or after your excursions around the area.
