What is a travel-themed wedding?

The travel-themed wedding style tends to be a mixture of  boho and whimsical aesthetics , with the ultimate goal of creating an ambience that's both welcoming and eclectic—most importantly, it should be full of your personality and love of travel! Popular decor accents for a travel theme include things like globes, vintage suitcases, postcards, airplane motifs, stamps, and maps. Bright  wedding colors  are an easy way to give your travel-themed wedding a boost of fun, so we suggest choosing eye-catching colors like yellow, blue, red, fuchsia, and turquoise.

Comfortable wedding attire

Practical attire is especially important if your travel-themed wedding is taking place in an unexpected locale, like at the top of a mountain. Skip the fancy gowns, tuxedos, and footwear in favor of clothes that make it easy to move around (hiking boots optional!) and are appropriate for your venue.

Engraved compass wedding gift

Watches are a popular wedding day gift to give your spouse, but for a travel wedding theme, why not surprise your S.O. with a personalized compass instead? This one has a sweet engraved message on the back that reads, "So you can always find your way back home."

Airplane hangar wedding venue

Don't hesitate to think outside the box when it comes to your travel-themed wedding venue. Unique transportation-inspired venues, like airplane hangars, aviation museums, and train stations, will add an extra-memorable element to your special day.

Adventurous Travel Wedding Theme Ideas to Adore

  • by Marisa Jenkins
  • April 1, 2024

Dreaming of a wedding that whisks you and your guests away on a global adventure, without ever leaving your venue? A travel-themed wedding might be just the ticket. It’s a fantastic way to celebrate your love for exploration and each other, creating a unique and unforgettable experience.

From boarding pass invitations to a world map seating chart, the possibilities are endless. You’ll not only tie the knot but also embark on the first adventure of your married life together.

Let’s explore some travel wedding theme ideas that’ll make your big day a journey to remember.

Incorporating Maps and Globes

globe as rustic centerpiece

Bringing maps and globes into your wedding decor is a creative way to highlight your adoration for travel. These elements not only serve a decorative purpose but also embody the journey you’re about to embark on together. You’ll find incorporating these items not only easy but incredibly impactful in setting the tone for your travel-themed wedding.

Start with your invitations. Imagine the anticipation your guests will feel when they receive an invite designed like an antique map, marking the beginning of their journey to your special day. This first impression sets the stage for what’s to come and immediately ties them into the theme.

At the venue, globes and maps can transform the space into a traveler’s paradise. Consider using vintage globes as centerpieces on your guest tables.

Pair them with travel books stacked high and postcards from places you’ve visited or dream of visiting as table markers. This not only serves as a conversation starter among your guests but also personalizes your celebration with stories of your adventures.

For a more interactive experience, design a world map seating chart. Guests can find their names tagged to specific destinations, indicating their table assignments. Such an engaging setup can become a memorable part of their experience, making them feel like an integral part of your ongoing journey.

Important: Always look for maps and globes that reflect your style as a couple. Whether you prefer a vintage look or something more modern, these elements should resonate with your personal taste and the spirit of adventure that defines your relationship.

Through these thoughtful touches, you’ll not only celebrate your love for each other but also your shared passion for exploration. Each map and globe placed with intention throughout your wedding is a nod to the adventures that lie ahead, promising a life of continued discovery and excitement.

Destination-Inspired Decor

greek-inspired wedding reception decor

Transforming your wedding venue into a reflection of your favorite destinations doesn’t have to be daunting. With a few strategic pieces, you can evoke the essence of Parisian streets, Hawaiian beaches, or even the Sahara’s expanse. The key is in the details that bring a sense of place.

First, consider the color palette. Colors have the power to transport us, and each destination has its own unique palette. For a Moroccan theme, think rich jewel tones like emerald green and ruby red.

If you’re going for a Greek island vibe, opt for crisp whites and ocean blues. These colors can be incorporated into everything from your table linens to your floral arrangements.

Next, incorporate authentic elements that scream ‘destination.’ For a Parisian theme, elegant Eiffel Tower models as centerpieces or table numbers can add a touch of romance. Hawaiian themes might call for luau-inspired table settings, complete with palm leaves and tropical flowers.

If you’re aiming for an Indian-inspired wedding, consider adding small, intricate lanterns and vibrant, silk pillows as part of your seating decor.

Food and drink selections offer another opportunity to highlight your theme. Offer a tasting menu inspired by your chosen location’s cuisine. Italian weddings might feature a pasta bar, while a Caribbean theme could include a rum-tasting station.

It’s not just about the type of food, but also how it’s presented. Think of themed serving ware and decor that matches your overall theme.

Lastly, don’t forget about the power of music and entertainment to set the atmosphere. A flamenco dancer or a steel drum band can submerge your guests into the experience, creating memories that last a lifetime.

By focusing on these elements, your wedding decor will tell a story of travel and adventure, making your special day truly unforgettable.

Wanderlust Wedding Attire

travel wedding theme ideas for beach attire

When embracing a travel-themed wedding, your attire can be a bold statement of your wanderlust spirit. Choosing unique and theme-appropriate wedding attire is not just about looking good; it’s about telling your travel stories through what you wear.

For brides, consider a dress that reflects the elegance and allure of your favorite destination. A Grecian-style gown might be perfect if you’re enamored with the ancient beauty of Greece, while a dress with subtle floral patterns can echo the gardens of France. Don’t shy away from incorporating colors that remind you of a sunset in Africa or the Northern Lights.

Grooms have the opportunity to stand out with attire that complements the theme. A safari-inspired suit for an African adventure theme or a brightly colored tie that matches the bride’s dress can add a touch of whimsy and unity to your outfits.

Consider adding accessories like a vintage compass cufflink or a map-patterned pocket square to underline the travel theme.

Your wedding attire is not just about the dress or suit but also about the details and accessories . For a beach destination wedding, brides can opt for seashell jewelry and grooms can go for lightweight linen suits to keep the vibe casual yet elegant.

Footwear should also reflect your travel theme. Comfort is key, especially if your venue is outdoors or in a unique setting. Think about elegant sandals for a beach wedding or sturdy yet stylish boots for a mountain or adventure-themed wedding.

Remember, your wedding attire is a major part of the day’s theme. Letting your wanderlust guide your choices ensures that your love for travel shines through, making your special day unforgettable.

Passport-Inspired Invitations and Save the Dates

passport-themed wedding invitation

When planning your travel-themed wedding, the invitations set the stage. Imagine the excitement of your guests as they receive passport-inspired invitations .

These unique invites not only announce your special day but also whisk your guests away on the adventure that awaits them. Each page can reveal more details about your wedding, mimicking the process of flipping through an actual passport.

Creating these invites involves focusing on authentic touches, such as a cover that resembles a real passport’s texture and color. Inside, you can include stamps or visas that represent significant milestones in your relationship, like the first trip you took together or the place where the proposal happened.

For a more personalized touch, incorporate your engagement photos as if they were passport photos.

When it comes to save the dates, consider sending out boarding pass-themed cards. These can be designed to look like real boarding passes, offering your guests a sneak peek of the journey they’re about to embark on with you.

You can include details like the departure date (your wedding date), boarding time (the time your ceremony starts), and the destination in a way that playfully mirrors an actual boarding pass.

To further enhance the theme, consider using postal stamps from the country or city where you plan to wed on the envelopes. This adds an element of authenticity and excitement, making your guests feel like they’re truly about to set off on an international adventure.

Remember, these first impressions of your wedding theme are crucial. They’re your chance to captivate and intrigue your guests, setting the tone for a memorable experience that extends beyond the conventional wedding ceremony and into the realm of adventure and exploration.

Travel-Themed Guest Book

travel-themed guest book at a wedding

Capturing memories in a unique way becomes a breeze with a travel-themed guest book at your wedding. Instead of settling for a traditional guest book, think outside the box. Invite your guests to leave their mark on something that reflects your wanderlust spirit and your shared adventures.

Consider using a vintage globe where guests can sign their names along with a short message or wish. This not only creates a memorable keepsake but also serves as a striking piece of decor in your home.

Alternatively, a custom-made book with map pages offers a personalized touch, allowing guests to pinpoint places they suggest you visit or share special travel memories of their own.

For a truly interactive experience, set up a postcard station. Provide postcards from various destinations around the world or places that hold special meaning to you.

Guests can select a postcard, write a message, and drop it into a customized mailbox. This idea not only captures the essence of travel but also provides you with surprises to read post-wedding.

Implementing a travel-themed guest book is about creating an engaging experience for your guests and weaving together a tapestry of well-wishes that encapsulate the spirit of adventure. Consider these options:

  • Vintage globe : A chic and interactive way for guests to share their messages.
  • Map pages book : Offers a bespoke element and a nod to specific locations meaningful to you.
  • Postcard station : A dynamic and visually captivating option that brings a piece of the world into your wedding.

Whichever option you choose, ensure it aligns with your overall wedding theme and decor. This not only enhances the aesthetic but also makes the guest book an integral part of your special day.

Your travel-themed guest book will become a treasured memento, full of heartfelt messages and reminders of the loved ones who celebrated your journey’s beginning.

Final Thoughts

Your wedding is a reflection of your journey together, and a travel-themed celebration is a perfect way to showcase your love for adventure. From the moment your guests receive their passport-inspired invitations, they’ll know they’re in for an unforgettable experience.

With every detail, from the map decorations and vintage globes to the cuisine that transports them to your favorite destination, you’re inviting them into your love story.

Remember, it’s the personal touches, like a globe guest book or postcard messages, that will make your day truly special. Let your wedding attire and decor reflect the essence of your travels, creating a day that’s not just about the places you’ve been, but also the adventures that lie ahead.

After all, your love story is a journey, and your wedding is just one beautiful stop along the way.

Inspiration for Your Travel Themed Wedding or Destination Wedding

Last updated: August 26, 2023 - Written by Jessica Norah 106 Comments

Planning a travel themed wedding? The goal of this article is to provide inspiration for couples planning a travel inspired wedding or destination wedding.

I guess you could say that Laurence and I had a travel-themed wedding although it was more of a destination wedding. We legally married at sea aboard the RMS Queen Mary 2 in the Atlantic Ocean. Then we had a small ceremony in Venice Italy for family and friends to celebrate our wedding in Venice .

Even though we did not have the most traditional wedding ceremony or reception, I spent quite a bit of time online researching awesome travel themed wedding items and ideas about ways a couple could incorporate their wanderlust and love of travel into their wedding ceremony and wedding reception.

We’ve put together a list of over 100 items that we think would be perfect for a travel-themed wedding. These include travel themed wedding invitations, wedding rings, wedding decorations, table place cards, cake toppers, DIY ideas, wedding favor gifts, and more!

Many of our recommendations are focused on handmade items and unique products that can be customized to fit the style of any wedding couple. We include items that should fit just about any type of wedding and suit any wedding budget.

We have physically reviewed many of these items and hope you enjoy this list of wonderful travel themed wedding items. We hope it inspires you and gives you plenty of ideas for your own travel themed wedding!

100+ Ideas for a Travel Themed Wedding

In 2015, one survey of American wedding couples found that approximately 21% have a destination wedding of some sort, whether domestically or internationally. The study found that there are more than 350,000 destination weddings each year, 77% of which take place in the continental US and 23% at international destinations with the Caribbean and Mexico being the two most popular destinations.

However, not all couples want or can have a destination wedding, but many still want to incorporate their love of travel into their wedding celebration. You don’t have to have a destination wedding to fill your marriage celebration with travel inspired touches.

So we are sharing over 100 products we found during our search that we thought would be perfect for a travel themed wedding or a destination wedding. These simple travel themed wedding decorations can help transport your guests to another land, and make them feel like they’re on holiday, even if they are still in their hometown.

I got truly interested in the topic of how to incorporate elements of travel into one’s wedding after we decided to get customized engagement/wedding rings with a strong travel element.  Many of the items on this list we physically reviewed. Some were items we purchased or received as gifts, and others were given to us by artists for review. Other products are just ones I loved when researching travel themed weddings online.

The majority of the items included on our list are handmade or hand customized items, made by a single artist, family, or a small business. Many of these items are truly unique and the majority can be customized to include elements that are special to you.

Note that most wedding items are marketed towards heterosexual couples with bride/groom and his/her versions. However, given that most of our recommended items can be personalized, most artists are happy to adjust wording/colors/features to suit a gay wedding, civil union, nonbinary couple, etc. Just message them to ask!

We know that many people, like us, want to try to support local businesses when we can, and with Etsy it is easy to find products that are made in one’s own country. We share items that are made worldwide, with a large number of products produced in the USA, Canada, and the UK. But we also include items made by artists in Australia, the Ukraine, France, India, Brazil, Israel, etc.

When shopping, we recommend ordering items well before you need them for the wedding. Personalized and custom orders will take longer to make and international shipping times can be slow.

Although we chose these items specifically for a travel themed wedding, many of these items will also work for travel themed bridal showers, bon voyage parties, birthday parties, baby showers, engagement parties, wedding couple gifts, and just as general travel-related gifts.

There are so many possible ways to incorporate travel elements into your wedding, and we have tried to cover a variety of items from cake toppers to wedding invitations to wedding favors to wedding jewelry. We also tried to include items that fit a number of budgets and types of weddings.

We hope that this list helps inspire you to incorporate some element of your own wanderlust into your upcoming wedding or party!

Travel Themed Bow Ties & Neck Ties

Adding a travel themed bow tie or neck tie to your wedding wardrobe is an elegant but subtle way to incorporate your love of travel into your special day.

If you are purchasing a bow tie, be sure to note if it comes pre-tied or not, and whether it can be self-tied. Most grooms will prefer one style or the other.

For weddings, especially if there are a lot of groomsmen wearing matching bow ties, it is often recommended by wedding photographers to wear pre-tied bow ties for the photo shoot so that all the ties are a uniform size and shape in the wedding photos. So, some grooms may want one of each.

Travel Themed Guestbooks & Guestbook Alternatives

A guestbook is often one of the most treasured wedding keepsakes for a wedding couple as it contains the personal well wishes from all the wedding guests. A guestbook is often one of the first things that wedding guests see at your wedding, so it can be a good way to introduce the travel theme of the wedding.

Often the wedding couple has a guest book available to sign for people entering or exiting the wedding ceremony and then move it later to the reception so anyone who didn’t get a chance to sign at the ceremony can do it then.

If your guestbook is a bit unique, you may want to make sure you nominate a friend or family member to be in charge of letting guests know about your guest book. They can also show them how to use it if it requires any explanation.

When choosing a guestbook option, don’t forget to consider how many people are on your wedding guest list, to ensure that all guests have enough space to sign it. Many of the options below have different sizes available, while others come with the option to add extra pages for larger wedding parties.

Also note that most of our recommended guest books can also be used as a photo album if you prefer to use it to display photos of you and your partner, or if you wish for guests to take photos at the reception with an instant camera and add them to the book. Just be sure to check with the seller before purchasing if it is not clear.

Travel Themed Wedding Candles

Wedding candles are a way of symbolizing the uniting of two families. Often the bride and groom will light separate candles with their families, and bring them together to light a new candle as they start their next big adventure together. They are also often used to light churches and reception halls and as table centerpieces and decorations.

It is easy to add a sense of wanderlust to your candle choices, whether it is through the way the candle looks, its holder, or its scent. For scented candles, you may want to choose a specific scent for candles on the tables that fits a specific destination for a themed wedding.

If planning to burn them, look for non-toxic natural wax (paraffin free) candles. Just note that not all guests love scented candles as some people are very sensitive or allergic to them. So if you have them at the guest tables, you may want to have someone ask guests at each table before lighting and have some LED backups.

My dream is to have a ceremony on the beach at sunset. Is this a good idea? It’s important to give myself a few days to relax prior to the wedding.

October 3, 2017 at 2:03 pm

Hi Stacey, I think that it is your dream, then you should do it as long as your spouse-to-be is also on board with the idea. It can be tricky to have an outdoor wedding but I would just have it somewhere where the weather is normally warm and predictable and have a plan if the weather is less than ideal (an alternative indoor venue). If you are working with a wedding planner, they should be able to help get everything worked out for you. Giving yourself a few days to relax in advance sounds like a great plan! Wishing you a wonderful beach wedding, Jessica

Hi Lissa, Yes, when we got married on the Queen Mary 2 ( https://independenttravelcats.com/2015/12/22/wedding-at-sea-married-cunard-queen-mary-2-wedding/ ), we did very little planning as your options are obviously more limited and you have a wedding coordinator who helps you out and does the work of setting things up. We just had to come up with readings and music and make some selections regarding vows, flowers, food, etc. Very easy which was perfect for us! ~ Jesica

Good thing I’m not married yet, because I would have felt bad for not thinking of this first 😀 I’m in love with all this!! WOW! I definitely want passport wedding invitations *heart eyes*! The bow is adorable! And I want those luminary bags so bad! Thank you so much for posting this, it gave me so many ideas ^_^

Lots of nice products (and lots of research to put it all together!). I myself organized a travel themed barmitzva for my son a couple of years ago – lots of work went into travel video making (about all countries he visited) and decorations (every table was themed with a different country) but it was a lot of fun and quite unusual for a barmitsva! Needless to say- our wedding happened while travelling too (in Eastern Europe some 20+yrs ago).. while not too many people got to witness it, I would not do it any other way. It makes the day so special!

May 29, 2016 at 8:00 am

Hi Victoria, Haha, yes, it was a lot of research but so fun to find out about so many interesting products and such talented independent artists and small businesses! Sounds like a very special barmitzva for your son! My friend did something similar with her wedding although it was more wildlife themed (her and her husband worked at a nature preserve) and each table represented animals from different parts of the world. A fun way to decorate and make each table unique. Best, Jessica

This post is so full of inspiration for wanderlust-full celebrations. I love the passport and boarding pass save-the-dates and invitations.

May 22, 2016 at 10:57 am

Hi Erin, Yes, I think since most people now send Save the Dates as well as invites, it is nice to establish a theme if one is going to have one before the actual wedding day. But I think these invites are great even alone without having a travel themed wedding or destination wedding. The passports can provide a lot more information than a normal paper invite, including all the travel, pre-ceremony, venue, ceremony, and registry details as you can add as many pages as you need. ~ Jessica

This is a super timely article as I’m actually getting married next year! I love the map flowers bouquet idea because I’m not really fond of fresh cut flowers (found a bug in a bouquet once, ugh) and I think it’s a bit of a waste when they die so quickly after. Thanks for the inspiration!

May 21, 2016 at 5:19 am

Congrats on your upcoming wedding. Yes that map flowers bouquet is a great idea and I think paper flowers are becoming more popular for the reasons you are said, cleaner and can keep forever, but also because one can buy them ahead, travel with them, and store them just about anywhere. I also love the fact that you can customize these so much. Glad you found this post inspirational for your wedding! ~ Jessica

Anda Post author

May 20, 2016 at 8:13 pm

Your post made me so jealous! I got married almost 4o years ago, when there was no such thing as a ‘themed wedding.” In my country of origin people were married in a very traditional way, so this is how I got married to, but I would have loved to have a wedding like yours. Recently I attended a themed wedding for my niece though, in Florence. It was very beautiful, but nothing like yours. You’ve exceeded everything I’ve ever seen or heard so far. Wow!

May 21, 2016 at 4:48 am

Hi Anda, Yes, I think weddings, particularly for Americans, have become much more for the couple and what they would like to do and less about the family. I think it has to do partly with the fact that wedding couples are much more likely to pay for at least part, if not all, of their own wedding rather than the bride’s parents paying for most of it (many can’t afford to do this). Our wedding on the boat was private and fairly simple, and our wedding in Venice looks fabulous in photos, which it was of course, but it was also very small and informal. It was great for us as it was pretty stress-free! ~ Jessica

Jessica, we got our travel inspiration from our honeymoon, but if I could turn back time and have a travel inspired wedding I would chose some of these items. I love the bow tie, cufflinks, bouquet, cake topper and invitations, but adored your luggage. I first noticed your luggage in your wonderful Orient Express post. The rings are also a great idea for replacing expensive, sentimental rings when travelling which is something that is a need for many., but something I have never thought of doing. Finally I love that final photo of your dress and luggage on the bed in your beautiful Venetian hotel. Great post and thank you for linking up with #TheWeeklyPostcard

May 20, 2016 at 5:49 pm

Hi Lyn, Yes, I know, these make me want to get married again and I just got married! You have a good eye, yes, this is the same luggage we took on both the Queen Mary 2 and Orient Express. After the wedding the cosmetic case (because our wedding party didn’t have room to take it back) ended up traveling with us through Italy, Morocco, and Egypt…probably not the best choice of luggage for desert travel but it survived. Laurence is thinking about wearing his map bow tie and cufflinks when he gives a speech at an upcoming travel conference which I think will be perfect:) We love our rings, and if you are looking for unique travel rings, I can highly recommend Bruce. We got fabulous service, communication, and products from him! He has some amazing ready-to-buy designs and I love you can also customize. ~ Jessica

40 Creative Travel Themed Ideas for Your Wedding

' src=

Want to have a destination wedding but don’t have the budget? Here are some of our favorite ideas to bring a travel theme to wherever you are! Your guests will enjoy going on a mini-vacation at your themed wedding!

What is a Travel Theme?

A travel-themed wedding is perfect for couples who love the idea of travel. Whether it is a broad travel theme, or a specific location that you are taking inspiration from, this wedding theme is a great option for those who are always looking forward to the next trip they are taking.

Some brides will choose to have a broad “travel” theme with no specific location they are traveling to. This theme has a lot of room for creative decorative elements and is definitely unique. From plane ticket invitations, to assorted “global” elements tied into your centerpieces, the options for travel related decor and theme ideas are endless.

Travel themes can work well for brides who are drawn to rustic weddings, but you want more specific themed elements tied in.

Travel Destination Theme Ideas

If you have a specific location that you remember traveling to that you would like to draw inspiration from, you can think back to that trip and what made it so special. For example, if you want to have a romantic Parisian themed wedding after a memorable trip there, you could make your travel theme more tailored towards French cuisine and travel elements.

Another great option is to celebrate the countries that you and your partner are from on your travel themed wedding day. If you would really love to have your wedding at your home country but you are unable to afford a destination wedding, a travel theme can open the doors to tying cultural elements into your special day.

Here are some amazing travel themed wedding ideas for couples who want to go the distance with their partner! Travel-themed wedding ideas are easy to incorporate throughout your special day.

How to Plan a Travel-Themed Wedding

Here’s what you need to know to pull off this concept.

In This Article

Travel is an important part of many relationships. Whether it’s a life-changing trip, like getting engaged on top of a mountain in Switzerland, or more regular, smaller-scale couple getaways, like visiting a nearby beach town every summer, traveling helps strengthen a connection through shared experiences and priceless memories. If exploring different places is one of your mutual hobbies or passions, you might be looking for ways to incorporate this pastime into your big day. Enter: A travel-themed wedding.

While throwing a destination wedding is a seamless way to enact this theme, you don’t necessarily have to jet overseas to make this aesthetic a reality. By instigating this design concept, you can transport guests to any thrilling destination—even if you’ve opted for a local celebration. With this theme, you can focus your nuptials around a medley of travel sites or a singular location that you want to share with your guests. Or you can simply integrate details and designs related to the act of traveling, like globes and suitcases, to highlight your hobby. Whichever route you decide to take, this central idea is guaranteed to make your event more meaningful and memorable for everyone in attendance.

Meet the Expert

  • Sophie Mae is the owner and founder of Stylish Details Events based in California and New York City. She has 13 years of experience as a wedding planner.
  • Nancy Park is the co-owner and principal planner of So Happi Together , a wedding planning and design firm that specializes in destination weddings.
  • Laura Ritchie is the principal designer and stylist at Grit & Grace , which is located in Washington D.C. She’s been working in the wedding space for 15 years.

If you think travel-related elements will help you tell your love story, we’ve created an expert-approved guide to executing this vision. Ahead, everything you need to know about planning a travel-themed wedding, from the venue to the entertainment.

Whether you’re making it official overseas or staying put in your neighborhood, there are so many different wedding venues to choose from for your travel-themed wedding. Below, some suggestions from the experts.

Destination Weddings

Since travel-focused nuptials spotlight the excitement and joy of traveling, a popular place to bring this theme to life is via a destination outside of your town. “This gives you the chance to show your family and friends some of your favorite spots in an exotic place you like to visit,” planner Sophie Mae of Stylish Details Events says. If the setting of your event is integral to establishing this theme—and your budget and schedule allow for it—then saying “I do” at a far-off location is a possibility. Planner Nancy Park of So Happi Together recommends selecting a spot that is meaningful to you, like where you took your first trip together as a couple or a bucket-list site that you’ve always dreamt of exploring. The world is your oyster—you can choose virtually any place that you have a connection to (or a desire to see), whether it’s Lake Como or Antigua.

Local Weddings

If a destination wedding isn’t feasible for you or your guests, it’s more than possible to pull off a travel-themed celebration at a nearby locale—that doesn’t require any traveling at all. Whether you settle on a hotel ballroom or your own backyard, you can still set the scene by integrating travel-like décor. Another option is opting for a venue that captures the essence of travel, like an airport tarmac.

The Invitations

Before your guests even set foot in your locale, your wedding invitations will introduce everyone to your travel-inspired theme. One out-of-the-box idea is relaying all of the details about your upcoming nuptials on a postcard, complete with a photo of you and your partner on vacation (bonus points if it’s at your venue).

If you’re sticking with traditional invitations, you can use the design of your paper goods to reference your aesthetic: A painted illustration of your destination or travel-inspired motifs, like suitcases and compasses, will set the scene. Along with your invitations and RSVP cards, planner Laura Ritchie of Grit & Grace suggests rounding off your suite with a map, highlighting some of your favorite spots around your venue—or even around the world. Once you seal everything in an envelope, Mae advises adding postage stamps from various travel locations.

The Decorations

One of the best ways to execute a travel-themed wedding—especially if your affair is local—is through decorations that nod to your love of traveling. This might look like passport booklets for ceremony programs, a globe that everyone signs for your guest book, luggage tags for your escort cards , or framed photos of you and your partner in some of your favorite travel destinations for table numbers. You can also stack suitcases at the foot of your head table or work compasses into your runner. Park recommends incorporating more indirect elements, like artisan goods, flowers, patterns, and colors, that remind you of a certain place and allude to your love of travel.

The Dress Code

From your outfit to the overall dress code, there are plenty of attire options for a travel-themed wedding, which we explore below.

If your travel-themed wedding is taking place in a far-flung destination, consider wearing a garment created by a designer in that area. For local affairs, you can still choose an outfit from an artisan who’s based in one of your favorite travel spots. Your accessories are another seamless way to infuse your passion for traveling into your attire. For instance, pair your ensemble with a bracelet or a brooch that you bought from a boutique on vacation there.

Destination or themed weddings naturally offer couples more leeway when it comes to their dress code , so you can rethink the classic black-tie option. Some ideas are festive attire for a beachside bash in Tulum or all-black attire for an Italian villa venue. Regardless of your decision, Park advises sharing details about how your loved ones should dress for the location, climate, and season, like if packing extra layers or wearing a certain pair of shoes is needed.

The Food and Drinks

For your hors d'oeuvres, drinks, and dishes, consider recreating some of your favorites from your travels, like an Aperol spritz in Italy, ratatouille in France, or flan in Spain. The goal is to share that special moment with your friends and family, so there’s no need to worry about serving crowd-pleasers. “Don’t shy away from local cuisine or delicacies that could seem a little more funky than meat and potatoes,” Ritchie says. “This is the time to have your guests experience what you love about this location, and it’s OK to offer something out of the box.” If you can’t choose just one region, Mae suggests working with your caterer to create a menu filled with dishes from around the world. Then, deck out your display with travel motifs, like compass drink stirrers, cocktail napkins embossed with a map, or an airplane cake topper.

The Activities

To make your big day even more memorable, incorporate activities and entertainment that represent your jet-setting lifestyle. This could be a photo booth with props from different countries or a game of travel-themed trivia. Music is another way to reference your travels. If you’re throwing a destination wedding, Park suggests hiring local musicians . “Immersive artist experiences that reflect the destination are always fun and unique and leave quite the impression for guests,” she says.

If you love the rustic charm of barn weddings but still want a touch of elegance, consider a rustic elegance theme. Use burlap, lace, and mason jars to create a cozy and warm atmosphere. Enhance the decor with chandeliers, soft draperies, and vintage furniture to add a touch of elegance to the rustic setting.

4. Glamorous and Luxurious

If you're looking to create a glamorous and luxurious atmosphere, opt for a Hollywood-inspired theme. Incorporate elements such as crystal chandeliers, silk table linens, and gold accents to add a touch of glamour to your wedding decor. Don't forget to add a red carpet for your grand entrance!

5. Minimalist Elegance

If you prefer a more understated and minimalist look, consider a minimalist elegance theme. Keep the color palette simple and clean, focusing on whites, greys, and metallics. Opt for sleek and modern furniture, and use geometric shapes and clean lines to create a sophisticated look.

Creative Wedding Ideas

When it comes to wedding decor, thinking outside the box can lead to some truly creative ideas. Here are some unique wedding decor ideas that will set your celebration apart:

1. Hanging Floral Installations

Instead of traditional centerpieces, consider hanging floral installations from the ceiling. This unique and eye-catching idea will create a stunning visual display and will make your guests feel like they're dining in an enchanted garden.

2. Unique Seating Arrangements

Move away from traditional round tables and consider more unique seating arrangements. Long banquet tables or even mix-and-match seating options can create a more relaxed and intimate atmosphere.

3. Light Projection

Add a touch of magic to your wedding decor with light projection. Use a projector to display images or animations that are meaningful to you and your partner, such as photos from your relationship or quotes that symbolize your love.

4. Interactive Installations

Get your guests involved in the wedding decor by incorporating interactive installations. For example, set up a polaroid photo booth where guests can take pictures and create a guestbook with their photos. This not only adds a fun element to your wedding but also creates a meaningful keepsake.

Beautiful Wedding Decorations

Your wedding decor should reflect your personal style and create a beautiful atmosphere for your special day. Here are some tips to ensure that your wedding decorations are truly stunning:

1. Choose a Color Palette

Start by choosing a color palette that resonates with you and your partner. This will help guide your decor decisions and create a cohesive look throughout the venue. Consider the season, the venue, and your personal preferences when selecting your color palette.

2. Pay Attention to Lighting

Lighting can make all the difference in creating a beautiful atmosphere for your wedding. Consider incorporating different types of lighting, such as string lights, candles, and uplighting, to add depth and warmth to the space.

3. Incorporate Personal Touches

Add personal touches to your wedding decor to make it truly unique and special. Display photos of you and your partner throughout the venue, create custom signage with your favorite quotes or song lyrics, or incorporate elements that reflect your hobbies and interests.

4. Don't Forget the Details

Pay attention to the small details. From table numbers to place cards to napkin rings, every detail should be thoughtfully chosen to create a cohesive and beautiful look. Consider using personalized items, such as custom monogrammed napkins or engraved name cards, to add an extra touch of elegance.

Unique Wedding Decor

If you're looking for truly unique and one-of-a-kind wedding decor, consider thinking outside the box. Here are some ideas to inspire you:

1. Non-Traditional Aisle Decor

Instead of traditional flower petals or candles, consider using unique items to decorate the aisle. For example, you could use vintage rugs, potted plants, or even books to create a unique and memorable walkway.

2. Unexpected Centerpieces

Instead of traditional floral centerpieces, consider using unexpected objects as your table decor. For example, you could use terrariums, lanterns, or even stacked books to create a unique and eye-catching centerpiece.

3. Nature-Inspired Decor

Bring the beauty of nature into your wedding decor by incorporating natural elements such as branches, leaves, or even crystals. Use these elements to create unique and organic centerpieces, backdrops, or even seating arrangements.

4. Themed Decor

If you and your partner have a shared interest or hobby, consider incorporating it into your wedding decor. For example, if you both love travel, you could create a travel-themed wedding decor with maps, suitcases, and vintage globes.

With these stunning wedding decor ideas, you can create a truly magical and memorable experience for both you and your guests. Remember to let your personal style shine through and don't be afraid to think outside the box. Happy planning!

The Most Beautiful Stations on the Moscow Metro

travel themed wedding decor

You might have heard that there are some beautiful metro stations in Moscow. Soviet decorations, chandeliers, mosaic painting and statues are common in many of the stations. The good news is that the Moscow Metro does not cost a lot of money and many of the most beautiful stations on the Moscow metro are on the same line, so you can almost get on and off at each station to visit these. Over the New Year holidays, I had a free afternoon and decided to visit some of these stations. Check out what I found below…..

The main stations that you will want to visit are on the Number 5 line, also known as the Circle Line. An advantage of this line is that you can get to it very easily and quickly no matter where you are in Moscow. The announcements on the metro are in Russian as well as English so you don’t need to worry if your Russian language skills are not good.

If, like me, you arrive in Moscow via train from Kyiv , then you will arrive at a metro station which many Muscovites believe to be the most beautiful of them all…..

Kievskaya metro station was opened in 1954 and features white marble walls which curve upwards and have with large mosaics surrounded by a gold trim in a very classical style. The mosaics depict life in Ukraine and was designed by a Ukrainian who wanted to display Ukraine’s influence and contribution to Soviet Russia.

Belorusskaya

If you look at a map of the metro , you will want to go in a clockwise direction on the circle line. So you will want to get on the train going in the Barrikadnaya direction and not Park Kultury. Stay on this line until you reach the 2nd station, Belorusskaya. This station was built in 1952 and like Kievskaya also features white marble pylons and a plaster ceiling.

The ceiling features 12 mosaics in an octagonal shape depicting Belarusian life, while the tiling on the floor is said to resemble a Belarusian quilt. One of the passageway exits of the station has a statue called ‘Belarusian Partisans’ of three men wearing long coats, holding guns and carrying a flag.”

Mayakovskaya

To get to the next station, we need to change onto the green line (line 2) and go just one stop to the station of Mayakovskaya. This station has an art deco theme and, for some, resembles an elaborate ballroom. The columns are faced with stainless steel and pink rhodonite while the marble walls and ceiling have 34 mosaics with the theme “24-hour Soviet Sky. Apparently, Stalin resided here during the 2nd World War as the station was used as a command post for Moscow’s anti-aircraft regiment.

Novoslobodskaya

It’s time to get back on the metro and return to Belorusskaya. At Belorusskaya, change to the circle line again and continue clockwise to the next station, Novoslobodskaya. With its 32 stained glass panels, this station reminds me of a church. The panels were designed by Latvian artists and are surrounded by a brass border.

Prospekt Mira

Back on the metro and again just one stop until our next station, Prospekt Mira. This station was originally called Botanichesky Sad after the nearby Botanical Gardens of the Moscow State University. The pylons are covered in white marble and decorated with floral bas-relief friezes. The ceiling is decorated with casts and several cylindrical chandeliers.

Komsomolskaya

On the metro once more and once more we are going just one stop to the next station – Komsomolskaya. This station is famous for its its yellow ceiling. The chandeliers in this station are huge. The photos below do not do this station justice.  For me, this station resembles a presidential palace.  You hace to see it for yourself to truly appreciate it.

Because of it’s location, this is one of the busiest stations in the Moscow metro as it serves three of the main train stations in the city – Leningradsky, Yaroslavsky, and Kazansky so be prepared for a lot of people.

Elektrozavodskaya

When you are ready to leave Komsomolskaya metro station behind, then get back on the circle line and go one stop to Kurskaya and change to the blue line (line 3) and go to two stops to the Elektrozavodskaya station. This station gets it’s name from a nearby electric light bulb factory and has a somewhat industrial but also futuristic style, with 6 rows of circular lamps (there are 318 lamps in total). I think this is one of the most beautiful stations on the Moscow metro for how unique it is. The station was opened in 1944 after a delay because of the 2nd World War and features 12 marble bas-reliefs of the struggle on the home front during the war.

Ploschad Revolyutsii

Back on the metro line 3 (but in the other direction), getting off at the 3rd stop – Ploschad Revolyutsii (Revolution Square). This is located underneath the square in Moscow of the same name and is a short walk from Red Square in the city centre. It is the perfect place to end a visit around Moscow’s metro. The station features red and yellow marble arches with a total of 76 sculptures in between each arch. The sculptures are supposed to represent the people of the Soviet Union and include soldiers, farmers, industrial workers, children etc… I noticed a lot of people touching the golden chicken in the photo below as well as the show of the woman. I am assuming that this is for good luck.

Kievskaya definitely caught me off guard. Didn’t know Moscow metro stations were THIS extravagant! Mayakovskaya is gorgeous too with the marble walls and mosaics. I might just need to book a flight over to admire all of these!

Do it! Kievskaya was my first introduction to the Moscow metro as I got an overnight train from Kyiv.

You know, in the States, all we ever hear is bad stuff about Russia. It’s nice to see other (and lovely!) dimensions of such a controversial place.

It’s the same in the UK which is why I prefer going to see somewhere and making up my own mind. It’s all ‘politics and bullshit’ as I say

' src=

I went to Moscow about 13years for Christmas and went to train stations, so I can see these amazing mosaics and chandeliers. I agree with you that are beautiful Stations for sure and I could of wandered around for days. I think Kievskaya is definitely my favourite out of them all and I even have some similar pictures as you.

I imagine Moscow would have been a little different 13 years ago but these stations have probably always looked beautiful

You chose some great stations for this write up! Beautiful details in these stations and would love to visit them sometime. Particularly like the Komsomolskaya station with that yellow ceiling!

Thank you very much. Komsomolskaya seems to be a lot of peoples favourite stations too

Wow! Without the text I would have thought them to be some museum or gallery.

I know exactly what you mean!

Wow, it is just stunning! How does anyone get to work with so much to look at. I’m surprised at the very bourgeois-looking Komsomolskaya station. I would have thought it was all too Tzarist looking, but then I haven’t been to Russia yet lol. This has just made me want to go more!

' src=

Wow, that’s a lot of artwork. I wonder how old some of these pieces are?

Generally most of the stations are from 1940-1960 approximately. The later stations are more functional than style.

' src=

My mother-in-law was in Moscow fifty years ago and still raves about the metro stations. So far, I could not imagine much. But now! The pictures are great and I think it’s almost a pity that this splendor is underground. But for every user of the Metro can enjoy a free trip to the world of art. Susanne

True. It is like having a free trip to an art museum/gallery. I hope that you can one day visit Moscow and see for yourself.

' src=

Oh wow, I would never have known that these were metro stations. The ceilings remind me of how you need to look up sometimes, even in the commuter rush!

It is true about life in general, we just go from A to B looking directly in front of us instead of around us

' src=

Wow, I would have never guessed that these were stations. The decor is so pretty and not one I’m used to seeing at metro stations. Love the ceiling at The Komsomolskaya metro station.

They certainly don’t look like metro stations. The ceiling there is one of my favourites too!

Christmas gift guide to Moscow surroundings

travel themed wedding decor

Visitors from America and Western Europe might be surprised to discover that Russia celebrates Christmas on January 7th. That’s because the Russian Orthodox Church follows the Julian calendar. After the end of the Soviet Union, some Russians have begun celebrating Christmas on December 25 in accordance with the Gregorian calendar. But many Russians still observe the tradition of fasting on January 6th, breaking the fast with a large feast on Christmas Eve after the first star has appeared in the sky.

During the Soviet era, Christmas and religious traditions were banned in Russia. Santa Claus was replaced by Ded Moroz, or, Grandfather Frost, an old man with a long white beard who would bring gifts to children on New Year’s instead of Christmas. According to Russian tradition, Ded Moroz is accompanied by his granddaughter, Snegurochka, the Snowmaiden, who helps him on his journey to give presents to children.

Although the tradition of having a Christmas tree, known as a yolka in Russian, was also banned during Soviet times, Russians got around this by having New Year’s trees from which they hung homemade decorations. Today, the restrictions of the Soviet Union have faded into history, and during the Christmas season visitors to Russia can even purchase Christmas ornaments in the shape of matryoshka dolls, or religious icons that depict nativity scenes.

Heading counterclockwise around the Golden Ring this holiday season, northeast of Moscow, your first stop will most likely be the city of Vladimir, home to some of Russia’s most striking churches and cathedrals. The Vladimir region is known for its fine crystal. Stop by the Crystal, Lacquer Miniatures, and Embroidery Museum ( 2 Bolshaya Moskovskaya ) for an overview of traditional crafts before visiting the gift shop in the museum to browse the crystal selection. Vladimir Chic ( 2 Dvoryanskaya ) also sells local glass and crystal work.

Typical souvenirs are also for sale in Vladimir’s old town, especially by the Golden Gate, a triumphal arch and defensive tower that is one of the last-remaining parts of the wall that once surrounded ancient Vladimir and a sure stop on any tour of the Golden Ring.

Just 63 kilometers from Vladimir lays the nearby city of Gus-Khrustalny , the ‘Crystal Goose,’ also home to a rich glass and crystal making tradition. You can visit the glassmaking factory in Gus-Khrustalny and buy gifts ranging from plates and vases to decanters, or visit the outlet store back in Moscow ( 4 Ilyinka ) just east of the Kremlin.

North of Vladimir, you’ll arrive in Suzdal, one of the Golden Ring route’s more tranquil towns. Suzdal boasts a number of small bazaars and stands outside the main tourist sites where visitors can purchase local honey mead, called medovukha, along with traditional crafts, like a pair valenki, or Russian woolen boots, which make an ideal Christmas gift for friends and family back home. The shopping stands outside Suzdal’s Museum of Wooden Architecture and Peasant Life ( Ul. Pushkarskaya ) are also highly recommended. Market Square ( Torgovaya Pl ) houses a number of shops where visitors can search for arts and crafts.

Following the Golden Ring north of Suzdal, many tours will stop in the city of Kostroma, a former trading outpost on the immense Volga River. One of the city’s highlights is the Museum of Linen and Birchbark ( 38 Tereshkova ), where visitors can view exhibits on traditional Russian crafts woven from flax and bark. A gift shop in the basement sells tablecloths, napkins, baskets, linen dolls, and traditional clothing typical of the region.

South from Kostroma, stop in the city of Rostov-Veliky for enamel jewelry, a craft which allows artists to produce small paintings on metal that are then fired to produce a thin glaze over the image. Rostov became famous for its tradition of enamel work. Today, visitors can purchase rings, earrings, bracelets, brooches, and jewelry boxes in the gift shop of the Rostov Enamel factory ( 3 Borisoglebskoye Highway ).

While you’re in Rostov, visit the House of Crafts ( 16 Vtoraya Tolstovskaya Naberezhnaya ) for local pottery and the Souvenirs shop ( 5 Ul. Kamennyi Most ) for ushanka hats—Russian fur caps with earflaps—paintings, and samovars for tea lovers.

The last two stops on a tour of the Golden Ring are the cities of Pereslavl-Zalesskiy and Sergiev Posad. Pereslavl is most famous for its embroidery work, available at the Art Salon ( 12 Ul. Sovetskaya ) along with souvenirs made of wood and stone. Nearby Sergiev Posad is considered the place where Russia’s matryoshka dolls were first invented, and was the chief production center of the dolls before Soviet times. Visit the city’s Toy Museum ( 123 Pr. Krasny Armii ) to get a better sense of the birthplace of one of Russia’s most recognizable toys, then head over to the market alongside the Trinity Monastery of St. Sergius—one of the city’s most important sites—to load up on matryoshka dolls, painted eggs, and icons before going home.

If you’ll be in the Golden Ring during New Years, the city of Vladimir hosts an impressive Christmas fair, with an iceskating rink and performances by local artists, in the main square ( Sobornaya Pl ). In most other Golden Ring cities you’ll find similar events in the center square as Christmas nears.

Most shops and markets in the Golden Ring are open year round. If you’re coming to Russia for a short period of time, whether in winter or summer, consider a trip to this stunning part of the country, and bring an extra bag if you plan to go shopping for Christmas gifts.
