Best Day Trips from Edinburgh: Take a bus tour to the famous Loch Ness!

One of the best ways to meet Scotland hassle-free is to hop on a tour bus. The buses usually departs from Lawnmarket, Edinburgh early in the morning and arrive in the evening.

I personally loved one of the top-rated best bus tours in Scotland: the Hairy Coo bus tour.

You have lots of itineraries and various tours to pick from, but the Loch Ness tour was and still is a must if you’re new to the Highlands.

You’ve probably heard about Loch Ness before, haven’t you?

Loch Ness is the home to the famous legend of the sea monster Ness (or my favourite term because she ain’t no monster – Nessie).

It is located in a cute, very small and picturesque town called Fort Augustus and makes for one of the best and most famous day trips from Edinburgh to the Highlands.

Loch Ness is a large freshwater loch situated southwest of Inverness, which took its name from the River Ness that flows from the northern end.

You can take a boat tour and cross the river while learning all there is to know about Nessie, and even try to spot her for a wee picture.

Paying a visit to Loch Ness is also one of the best day trips from Edinburgh in winter, and you will understand why when you’re there, whether the river is frozen or not.

My absolute favourite… Glencoe. It’s just one of the best day trips from Edinburgh, and one of the most beautiful places in Scotland for anyone who wishes to be at one with nature.

Have you ever been fortunate enough to visit a place and without even knowing it, you feel in absolute peace, comfortable and quiet like there is nothing between you and the serene landscape?

Well, Glencoe was my heaven on Earth, my own very favourite place in this world. It is a village in western Scotland which lies in Glencoe Valley, in the Scottish Highlands.

This art piece of land is known for its stunning mountains and waterfalls. For the more adventurous ones, you can climb trails such as Buachaille Etive Mor and Bidean nam Bian.

At the village, you will find the Glencoe Folk museum with 18th-century cottages and displays on the local heritage, and the Glencoe massacre of 1692. In this dreamy destination, you will most likely also see red deer and golden eagles.

Tip: If you wish to stay in the nearby area make sure to check out the magnificent Glencoe Inn, it’s a cosy rustic and rather luxurious hotel where you can enjoy a good glass of wine and a warm bath looking at this breathtaking view.

Most of us grew up watching and reading the Harry Potter saga, and for me, it always goes back to that magical moment where we can spot wee Harry all excited to go to Hogwarts for the first time.

There is this specific part where you can see the Hogwarts express crossing a beautiful circular viaduct in an enchanting land.

Well, the world-famous spot is nonetheless than Glenfinnan Viaduct.

Smaller than it appears on the screens, but as magical as one could expect!

The Glanfinnan Viaduct is a beautiful place to show your photography skills.

If you go at a certain time of the year, you might even spot the train passing by – make sure to film or take as many pictures as you can before you miss the train!

You have different viewpoints to capture the most stunning pictures, however, one of the most famous ones is closer to the viaduct, where you can see the train above you.

This railway viaduct built between 1897-1901 is located on the west Highland line in Glenfinnan, Inverness-shire.

Situated at the top of Loch Schiel in the west Scottish Highlands, the viaduct overlooks the Glenfinnan Monument and the water of Loch Shiel.

This is one of the most instagrammable places in Scotland, and dare I say, in the whole world due to its role in the famous saga. So don’t forget your wand and marvelous robes; this one is going to be a bumpy ride!

One of the best day trips from Edinburgh is to North Berwick, just a short 30-minute ride by train from the Scottish capital.

There, you will be able to enjoy some walks alongside the sea, maybe surf or paddle in those waves, and why not visit Bass Rock, an iconic bird settlement in the region?

Bass Rock, or simply Bass, is a beautiful island in the outer part of the Firth of Forth, in the east of Scotland, and if you enjoy bird watching, you’ll find it’s a really lovely spot.

In there, and especially if you take a cruise tour, you will spot Puffins, Guillemots, Kittiwakes and Gannets. You might also find Eiders, various Gulls, Shags, Cormorants, Fulmars & Grey Seals!

Ah, Linlithgow – the birthplace of Mary, Queen of Scots!

In less than half an hour from Waverley, Edinburgh, you can reach Linlithgow, in West Lothian.

This pleasant town is rich in history, since the ruins of the Linlithgow Palace are the birthplace of the only queen Scotland has ever had.

The palace also used to be one of the principal residences of the monarchs back in the 15th and 16th centuries, and is a spot you really can’t miss.

Linlithgowshire offers visitors wonderful events, shopping, beautiful relaxing sights and a vast dining variety for you to pick from.

If you like architecture, pay a visit to the ruins of the Palace, and check out the old port, too. It connects Edinburgh with Falkirk and the Forth Clyde Canal, and dates back to 1822.

Oh, Callander, the beautiful gateway to the Highlands.

Here is something I once heard from one of the tour guides I met in Scotland when visiting Callander.

Do you want to know the best place for a date ? It’s called a Calendar .

Scottish people and their humor, am I right?

Callander is a small town in the council area of Stirling, Scotland, and situated on the River Teith.

The town is located in the historic county of Perthshire and it is considered to be the very gate to the Highlands.

Even though there are no actual gates, you can feel in the air this is really the place that divides the Lowlands and the magnificent Scottish Highlands.

A very small town where you can spot the beautiful mountains on the horizon whilst walking alongside the river. At Callander, you will also see cute swans and ducks, and in the summer, you might even be able to enjoy a picnic there.

This place is a tourist attraction for many people going or coming from the Scottish Highlands.

During the winter months, you will be able to see the frozen mountains as a killer background for your pictures. Just because of that, I believe Callander is one of the most beautiful places to visit in Scotland.

If you’re looking for one of the best spots for your day trips from Edinburgh, make sure to pass by the majestic Kelpies.

The Kelpies are situated in The Helix, a new parkland project built to connect sixteen communities in the Falkirk Council Area.

The 30-meter-high horse-head sculptures can be found between Falkirk and Grangemouth, standing next to a new extension to the Forth and Clyde Canal – and they mix street art with rich history.

In Scottish folklore, a Kelpie is angerous shape-shifting water creature that can appear on land as a horse.

It appears to its human victims as a grey or white horse, entices them to ride on their back then carries them down to an underwater grave.

You can visit the Kelpies free of charge at any time of the day throughout the year, since the area has been designed to give access to all, which means everyone can come and see them up close.

The Kelpies are one of the most instagrammable places in Scotland, and personally, I think they are stunning during the night with all the lights and colors coming from the sculptures.

The Scottish borders are located in an area to the south and east of Edinburgh, and separate Scotland and England.

Even though it’s a border, it has lots of things to see, such as castles and chapels.

You have the Rosslyn Chapel, located in the village of Roslin in Scotland, to start with. This 15-Century chapel was featured in the famous Da Vinci Code, and is so very instagrammable.

It is a port city built on the River Clyde, in Scotland’s Western Lowlands, and it’s known for its culture, art, and magnificent venues.

The Victorian and Art Nouveau architecture give a rich heritage to the city, and some of the home institutions include none other than the Scottish Opera, Scottish Ballet and the National Theatre of Scotland.

You can find all great things to do in the city, from places to go with friends, to tours, services, activities, and grand theatres, among many others!

I do believe that taking day trips from Edinburgh to Glasgow by train is more elegant, although they might not be as quick as a bus.

Edinburgh to the Highlands: The Best Day Trips

travel to highlands from edinburgh

Visiting Edinburgh can feel like an escape in itself; the city is brimming with expansive green spaces, medieval streets, and royal palaces — but there’s a whole world of wild nature and glorious scenery right on its doorstep.

Within a few hours’ drive, you can enter into a completely different world — one that’s filled with storybook castles, dazzling lochs, magnificent swathes of untamed wilderness, and staggering mountain peaks.

A Highland getaway is a must when you’re travelling through Scotland’s capital, even if only for a day. So, make sure your camera is charged and ready — here are four of the best day trips from Edinburgh to the Highlands .

Travel to: Scotland

Aerial view of Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park, Scotland

Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park

Craggy hills, ancient pine forests, and charming villages — this is only a small taste of what you’ll find in the Trossachs National Park. Loch Lomond sits at the heart of the park and, although it’s the region’s main draw, there’s so much more to see and do in this starkly beautiful region.

If you’re looking for outdoor adventure and stunning landscapes, this is the place to find it; you can easily spend a full day immersing yourself in the park’s natural attractions and getting your heart rate up in the process.

Rent a kayak and paddle across Loch Lomond, hit one of the region’s many hiking trails, summit a munro (a mountain that’s over 914m tall), tackle a mountain bike trail, or test your endurance on a paddleboard — the options are almost endless! Of course, you can also keep your visit laid-back with a Loch Lomond sightseeing cruise, a round of golf, or a nature walk.

The surrounding villages are worth a visit, too: head to picturesque towns like Luss, Killin, Callander, and Balloch for a spot of shopping and local food and drink.

How to get to Loch Lomond:

  • By car – Depending on your chosen destination within the Trossachs National Park, the drive from Edinburgh takes approximately 1.5 to 2 hours.
  • By public transport – You can reach villages within Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park — including the likes of Callander, Luss, and Balloch — by bus from Edinburgh. The journey takes roughly 1.5 to 3 hours and includes stops and transfers along the way.

Known for its spellbinding views and haunting history, Glencoe is one of the most famous regions in Scotland. And once you lay eyes on it yourself, you’ll instantly see why it’s the country’s best-known Highland glen: Glencoe’s natural setting is nothing short of stupendous, dominated by the ridge of Aonach Eagach on one side and flanked by the brooding crags of the Three Sisters on the other.

The area seems to have an air of magic about it, and that might just be the reason why it’s been featured in films like Skyfall and Harry Potter — so don’t be surprised if you feel a sense of déjà vu in Glencoe.

You’ll likely spend most of your time here marvelling at the area’s spellbinding scenery and sheer grandeur, but if you manage to put your camera down long enough, active pursuits and outdoor adventures await. You can try your hand at skiing, snowboarding, or mountain biking at the Glencoe Mountain Resort, go kayaking on Loch Leven, or hike up one of the nearby mountain ranges.

Glencoe is undoubtedly a place of profound natural beauty, but it’s also the site of a tragic historic event: the Massacre of Glencoe. The story is marked by violence and bloodshed, but it’s one you must learn about while you’re here.

How to get to Glencoe:

  • By car: Glencoe is roughly 193 km (120 miles) from Edinburgh, and the drive takes approximately 3 hours.
  • By public transport: Glencoe isn’t easily accessible by public transport; the best way to travel here is by driving or joining a guided tour.

Technically , Stirling isn’t part of the Scottish Highlands (it’s uniquely positioned where the Lowlands meet the Highlands), but it’s a must-visit stop on the way to destinations like Glencoe and Loch Lomond — and it also makes for a fantastic stand-alone day trip from Edinburgh.

This city is small in size but big on history: it’s been host to some of Scotland’s most infamous battles during the Jacobite Risings and the Wars of Scottish Independence, including the Battle of Stirling Bridge in 1297.

Stirling Castle — one of Scotland’s most significant historic sites — is the city’s main draw, along with the National Wallace Monument. This striking 19th-century memorial is dedicated to William Wallace, a Scottish knight and national hero, who became one of the main leaders during the First War of Scottish Independence (and was famously portrayed in the movie Braveheart ).

Round off your day here with a visit to the immersive Battle of Bannockburn Experience or a whisky tasting at the nearby Deanston Distillery.

How to get to Stirling:

  • By car: Located roughly 58 km (36 miles) from Edinburgh, the drive from Edinburgh to Stirling takes roughly 1 hour and 20 minutes.

1 day Highlands Itinerary from Edinburgh Roadtrip

Finally onto the Highlands 1 day itinerary from Edinburgh! We’d like to mention that this itinerary can be done all year round. When we visited in December, we were working with daylight from 8 am-4 pm. This meant that each stop was pretty quick as we wanted to reach the end destination before sunset.

If you’re travelling in summer, you can simply stay longer in each destination, pull over at more stops on the day or do some hiking! We’ll put time stamps throughout this Highlands itinerary for a trip in winter and we recommend leaving at 7 am to complete the whole 1 day Highlands road trip itinerary.

Take a quick stop at the Kelpies

The first stop of the day is the Kelpies – 30-metre sculptures of metal horses. It may be still dark if you’re sticking to the winter itinerary, but worth a quick visit and they light up too!

If you leave Edinburgh after 7 am, you should probably skip this stop. It’s not actually part of the Highlands, but just on the way. It’s possible to see the Kelpies from the main road, so you won’t miss out if you don’t stop.

Time of arrival at the Kelpies : 8 am (spend 10 minutes here)

The Kelpies: 1 Day Highlands Road Trip

Pass by Stirling Castle

Stirling Castle is a lovely day trip from Edinburgh. It is definitely worth more time to visit, which is why we skipped it on this itinerary. If you look out the window, you’ll see the beautiful castle on the right of the main road!

If you do have time to visit on a summer trip: Here’s where to book tickets and find prices on their website .

Time of passing by Stirling Castle : 8:40 am

Optional stop: Balloch Castle and Viewpoint

We’re adding Balloch Castle to this itinerary for those travelling outside of winter. (sorry about that!) We promise this Scottish Highlands itinerary gets more interesting for those travelling in winter, these are just a few stops you can do on the way. There’s a Co-op supermarket in the area if needed.

With more daylight, this is a lovely stop on the way to the Highlands and it’s the beginning of the beautiful views of Loch Lomond! It’s a short paved walk through the trees to reach the castle and lake. Find out more information here !

Time of arrival passing by Balloch Castle : 9:30 am

Stretch your legs at Cameron house

Cameron House is only a short drive down the road but has more impressive views of Loch Lomond. We stopped here as you don’t have to walk to see the views from the car park!

There’s also a seaplane that you can take to explore the views even more, although we’re not sure if they’re only for hotel guests. Spend around 15 minutes here at Cameron House !

Loch Lomond is a freshwater loch in between the highlands and lowlands of Scotland. So you’re pretty much at the beginning of the Highlands where this itinerary really gets exciting!

Time of arrival at the Cameron House : 9:35 am (spend 15 minutes here)

Views of Loch Lomond at Cameron House

Wander around Luss

The next stop is a small and cosy village named Luss. Luss is known for being one of the most beautiful villages in Scotland, and its backdrop is the impressive Ben Lomond!

It only takes 10 minutes to drive here, so you should aim to arrive at 10 am! We spent around 30 minutes here which is on the longer side if you’re in a rush, but the village and the views of the loch with the mountains were lovely!

There is a small parking fee here (from 50p) and a few cafes to grab a drink for the road.

Time of arrival at Luss : 10 am (spend 25 minutes here)

The most beautiful village, Luss

See the views at the Inveruglas Pyramid

Next up on this 1 day Highlands road trip is a visit to Inveruglas Pyramid! Carry on driving north up Loch Lomond and you’ll find signs and a car park to pull over.

The pyramid is a tall viewing platform that gives you even more incredible views of the lake. It’s only a short walk from the car park and it’ll be your last stop for viewing the lake on this itinerary. It’s a 15-minute drive from Luss along the scenic road.

There’s another small parking fee here (from 50p).

Time of arrival at Inveruglas Pyramind : 10:40 am (spend 10 minutes here)

A quick walk to the Falls of Falloch

If you’re after something a little different on the Scottish Highlands road trip from Edinburgh, then Falls of Falloch is it! It’s the easiest waterfall to visit on this route, as it’s near the road. It’s a 15-minute drive from the previous stop and there’s a free car park too!

The waterfall itself is pretty cool, although on the smaller side! It’s a short walk from the car park and won’t take too long to visit. When we visited, there were locals having a BBQ at -5°C which gave the falls a great atmosphere!

Time of arrival at Falls of Falloch : 11:05 am (spend 20 minutes here)

Falls of Falloch

Appreciate the scenery (The most scenic part of the drive – A82)

As soon as you’ve reached Crianlarich, the views become even more incredible than they already were!

Throughout Tyndrum, to Glencoe, the drive is covered in mountains, windy roads and amazing views. There are plenty of roadside parking spots if you want to stop and appreciate the views of Scottish nature.

  • Lochan na h-Achlaise view point
  • Loch Ba Viewpoint

Incredible views on a 1 day Highlands Road Trip

Take in the views at Loch Tulla Viewpoint

Loch Tulla Viewpoint is also within the scenic drive we’ve mentioned above, but it deserved its own title on this Scottish Highlands itinerary. The views here blew us away! We couldn’t believe that this was the United Kingdom and felt so lucky to experience the snowy topped mountains too.

Here’s the location for Loch Tulla Viewpoint our favourite stop on this 1 day Highlands road trip from Edinburgh! Definitely pull over when you pass by!

Time of arrival at Loch Tulla Viewpoint: 12:40 (spend 20 minutes here)

Loch Tulla Viewpoint in the Scottish Highlands

Also, check out our trip to Wales where we hiked Snowdon and stayed in a bell tent!

Explore Glencoe

Glencoe is one of the most picturesque places in the Scottish Highlands! When trying to plan this itinerary, our original route was to do a 1 day Edinburgh to Glencoe road trip but then we added a sneaky spot to the end!

It has beautiful hikes, stunning waterfalls and incredible views. It’s an area that would be great to stay the night if we had more time in a different season. The scenery in Glencoe will make all of your Scottish Highlands dreams come true!

If you’re visiting in summer there are a lot of hikes to choose from – we recommend the Lost Valley hike as it’s less than 2 hours but it is pretty challenging. Here are a few stops or things to do whilst you’re in Glencoe.

  • Glencoe Mountain Resort (a Scottish ski resort!
  • James Bond Skyfall Road (off route!)
  • Glencoe Viewpoint ( location here !)
  • The Meeting of Three Waters ( location )
  • The Three Sisters Peak
  • Glencoe Visitor Centre – National Trust for Scotland

At the end of this scenic drive, you’ll reach Glencoe Village, spend 10 minutes here on a short walk before hitting the road again to the next destination.

Time of arrival at Glencoe Village : 2 pm (spend 20 minutes here)

Glencoe - the best scenic drive from Edinburgh

Admire Ben Nevis

After leaving Glencoe, it’s a 30-minute drive to the area of Fort Wiliam where we found one of the best viewpoints to view Ben Nevis.

Ben Nevis is the highest mountain in Scotland and the United Kingdom (which is pretty impressive)! It’s one of the best hikes in the UK and will take up a whole day which is why we couldn’t climb it on this trip!

We don’t have time to get any closer on this Highlands road trip from Edinburgh so a viewpoint will do for now. With a bit of extra daylight in the summer, it’s totally possible to go for a short hike in the area.

As we were driving to our next destination we pulled into Corpach to try and find a view of Ben Nevis and it was perfect! Here’s the exact location , so you can see this Ben Nevis Viewpoint too!

Time of arrival to the Ben Nevis viewpoint : 3 pm (spend 15 minutes here)

Ben Nevis Viewpoint on a 1 day Highlands itinerary from Edinburgh

Visit the Glenfinnan Viaduct (Harry Potter Bridge)

This is our extra stop on this Highlands winter itinerary and it was definitely worth it! If you’re a Harry Potter fan this has to be on your list! It’s a 20-minute drive from Corpach and it’ll be your last stop in the daylight.

Glenfinnan Viaduct is an iconic bridge that was featured in the Harry Potter films! Many Potter fans travel far to visit this bridge, which is why its nickname is the Harry Potter Bridge.

It takes around 15 minutes to walk from the car park to the viewpoints at Glenfinnan Viaduct . In the winter there may be a lot of ice (there was for us) so be very careful when walking around the area.

Note: Unfortunately the Jacobite steam train only runs from early April to late October , so we missed out in the winter. When it does run, it usually passes over the bridge at 10.45 am or 3.00 pm but double-check for an accurate timetable in 2024, when it’s released!

As the Glenfinnan Viaduct is owned by the Scottish National Trust, it’s free to enter, but you have to pay £3.50 for parking.

Time of arrival at Glenfinnan Viaduct : 3:30 pm (spend 40 minutes here)

The impressive Glenfinnan Viaduct

We ran out of daylight at this point, but an additional stop is to visit the Glenfinnan Monument – National Trust for Scotland just across the road. The views looked incredible, especially at sunset!

Spend the evening at Fort William

It’s now the final part of this Scottish Highlands itinerary. After seeing a famous Harry Potter filming location , head back to Fort William and explore the high street. It’s probably going to be dark at this point if you’re travelling in the winter, but most shops will be open until 5 pm or later.

Browse in some shops and find some dinner before making the long drive back to Edinburgh. There are also a lot of supermarkets if you need more snacks!

Fort William is a lovely little town near the base of the highest peak of the UK – Ben Nevis ! It is the perfect place to stay for hiking in the area and you’ll notice there’s lots of accommodation here. If you wanted to extend your 1 day Highlands Itinerary by another day this is the best place to stay.

Time of arrival at Fort William : 4:40 pm

If you’re a fan of Harry Potter, a trip to London is a must if you’re exploring the UK!

Driving back to Edinburgh from Fort William

The drive back to Edinburgh from Fort William takes around 3 hours and you can go a few different ways. Check Google Maps to find your preferred route. We chose to drive down the alternative side of Loch Lomond, but as it was dark we couldn’t see the lake.

The bonus of it being dark was that the night sky was lit up with stars! Thankfully it was a clear night and we spotted several shooting stars before reaching the Scottish capital again.

When we arrived back in Edinburgh we had to return our rental car by 10 pm to the owner of the vehicle. We picked up the car at 10 pm the previous day which worked out well as we could leave as early as we wanted.

Loch Tulla Viewpoint

1 day Highlands Itinerary from Edinburgh Roadtrip Conclusion

Overall we would recommend this route and this Highlands trip to anyone! The day is very long, but totally worth it if you only have time for a day trip to the Highlands from Edinburgh.

If you’re doing this trip in the winter (like we did), you’ll be battling with that sunlight along the way, which is why we added times to this travel guide. The scenery is absolutely stunning all year round and in December we experienced snow which made the trip even more magical.

An alternative plan if you don’t want to spend most of the day driving is to do an Edinburgh to Loch Lomond road trip turning around at Crianlarich and driving back to Edinburgh on the other side of Loch Lomond. However we have to admit, the scenery is incredible after Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park.

by Sevenedges | | Travel | 0 comments

Edinburgh to Highlands

Scotland’s stunning Highlands are a natural wonder, a place where rugged mountains, serene lochs, and ancient castles come together to create a landscape that seems straight out of a fairytale. While the Highlands are best explored over several days, a day trip from Edinburgh can provide a tantalizing glimpse of this breathtaking region. Let us guide you through an unforgettable day trip from the Scottish capital to the Highlands, offering tips and recommendations along the way.

Getting to Scottish Highlands

Transportation Options:

There are several ways to reach the Highlands from Edinburgh, but the most convenient is by train or car. Trains from Edinburgh Waverley station will take you to various Highland destinations like Inverness, Aviemore, or Pitlochry. Alternatively, you can rent a car to have more flexibility in your itinerary.

Train Travel:

If you opt for the train, be sure to book your tickets in advance to secure the best prices. The journey itself is a scenic treat, with views of rolling hills and charming villages along the way.

Car Rental:

If you prefer driving, rent a car from one of the many rental agencies in Edinburgh. Ensure you have a GPS or a reliable map to navigate the winding roads.

Edinburgh to Highlands

The Itinerary from Edinburgh to Scottish Highlands

Early Start:

To make the most of your day, start early. Leave Edinburgh before dawn to catch the sunrise over the Highlands.

Your first stop should be the picturesque town of Pitlochry. Stroll through its quaint streets, visit the Pitlochry Dam and Fish Ladder, and enjoy a hearty breakfast at one of the local cafes.

Queen’s View:

A short drive from Pitlochry will take you to Queen’s View, one of Scotland’s most famous viewpoints. Enjoy panoramic views of Loch Tummel and the surrounding mountains.

Highland Wildlife Park:

If you’re traveling with family or have an interest in wildlife, consider a visit to the Highland Wildlife Park near Kingussie. Here, you can see native Scottish animals, including red deer, bison, and even polar bears.

Have a picnic in a scenic spot or visit a local pub to savour some traditional Scottish cuisine, such as haggis or a hearty bowl of Cullen skink.

No trip to the Scottish Highlands is complete without a visit to Loch Ness. Drive to the shores of this famous loch and take a boat tour to learn about the legend of the Loch Ness Monster.

Urquhart Castle:

While at Loch Ness, don’t miss Urquhart Castle. Explore the ruins and enjoy stunning views of the loch from this historic site.

Return to Edinburgh:

As the day draws to a close, start your journey back to Edinburgh. Take time to admire the scenic landscapes one last time as you make your way home.

Tips for a Successful Trip

Weather: The Scottish weather can be unpredictable, so pack layers and be prepared for rain.

Food and Water: Carry snacks and water for the road, as some Highland areas may have limited dining options.

Photography: Bring a camera to capture the stunning scenery, but also take time to put it down and fully immerse yourself in the experience.

Respect Nature: Follow the “Leave No Trace” principles and respect the environment by not leaving any trash behind.

A day trip from Edinburgh to the Highlands is a fantastic way to experience the natural beauty and cultural heritage of Scotland. While you may only scratch the surface of this diverse region, the memories of the majestic mountains, serene lochs, and historic sites will stay with you forever. 11. Brilliant Scottish Highlands e-Bike Tour from Edinburgh

Scottish Highlands tour from Edinburgh

⭐️  RATING: 5 out of 5 Stars, 9+ reviews | ⏳  TOUR LENGTH:  9 hours | ✔️  BOOK NOW

  • Bike or e-Bike for the day
  • Relaxing bike rides through the Highlands, as well as hiking opportunities
  • Time for lunch and sightseeing

A unique option for taking a tour of the Highlands from Edinburgh is this bike tour of the Highlands!

No, you’re not riding your bike all the way there, don’t worry. It’s also a Highlands bus tour from Edinburgh.

You’ll be picked up in a coach/bus and then be driven to the Highlands, where you’ll get to go on an easy bike tour (you can choose an electric bike if you feel that is a better option for your fitness level) around destinations in the Highlands.

There’s plenty of time for lunch, and some hiking options during the day to make sure that you fit it all in and enjoy an active day out.

This is a great option for families with teenagers or those who want a bit of a different way to see the Highlands instead of just sitting in the bus all day.

The guides are top notch and the path for the bikes is easy enough that you don’t need to be some sort of cycle guru to enjoy yourself and take part.

UK Travel Planning Guide: the FAQs

🏥 Should I buy UK travel insurance?

Absolutely yes. Basic coverage is not expensive, and as a visitor you are NOT covered under the NHS. Compare policies and prices with Travel Insurance Master here , a big name in the travel insurance business, and cross that off your list.

🔌 Do I need travel adapters for the UK?

Yes, you do, otherwise you won’t be able to plug in your electronics/phone/lifelines. I recommend this one , which is all-in-one so you can use it in other countries.

🚗 What do I need to drive in the UK?

The first thing you need to check out if you’re planning on renting a car in the UK is this guide to driving in the UK for visitors – the roads, signs, and driving experience will likely not be what you’re used to and it’s essential to prepare yourself to stay safe and aware.

🛌 What’s the best way to book hotels in the UK?

For UK hotels, Booking is the best site as it offers free cancellation on many properties. If you want an apartment, I always recommend VRBO over AirBnb.

📳 Will my phone work in the UK?

Yes – if you set it up right. Check out my guide on making your foreign phone work in the UK to ensure that you get the type of service you need.

🚿 Can I drink the water in the UK?

Yes, UK water is great and perfectly safe. But drink out of taps in any kitchen or use water fountains. Double check before drinking out of the taps in hotel bathrooms, though, as they may be on a different system. London water is safe to drink .

If you can catch at least one day of clear weather you should see the Scottish Islands – they are beautiful! Tucked away on the edge of the Scottish Highlands are the Inner Hebrides, the Outer Hebrides, the Orkney Isles and Shetland (with the latter being much harder to reach with a tour) .

travel to highlands from edinburgh

Hi Everyone

Looking for recommendations for a day trip by train to get a glimpse/enjoy the flavor of the Highlands. Which would be a good city to take a day trip to. Aviemore, Pitlochry or other suggestions? Also open to multiple stops along the way.

Pitlochry and Blair castle would probably be your best option. Aviemore is maybe a bit far for a day trip.

travel to highlands from edinburgh

PItlochry by train would work well.

Depending on the kids you could do some of this walk

https://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/perthshire/salmon-ladder.shtml

Going up to Aviemore would give you more Highland scenery but Pitlochry is certainly a nice wee town surrounded by very pleasant hill country and walking round Loch Faskally, or part of it , is really lovely.

Aviemore has lovely scenery around it, but has quite a bland modern town centre, with nothing to do there.

Pitlochry/the Cairngorms is a good choice, as are other Highland Perthshire tours eg Aberfeldy. Also tours to the Trossachs and Loch Lomond and although they take a bit longer, the West Highland Lochs and Glens/Castles - type tours offered by a number of operators take you through a lot of our very best landscapes for a not unreasonable amount of time on a bus and enough/long enough stops to enjoy them

Avoid the Loch Ness and the Highlands - type tours as they are a very long time on a bus, with few/short stops in order to give you a couple of hours at Loch Ness, which is about our dullest/most grossly over-promoted "attraction" - literally everywhere you go steaming-by each way is better!

3 Day / 2 Night Scottish Highland Experience from Edinburgh

Outlander tours of scotland, book a tour.

  • 3 days / 2 Nights

What’s Included

Destination, short description, tour includes, price does not include, tour itinerary.

Today we leave the Capital City of Scotland and start our drive north to the Scottish Highlands. As you travel over the Forth Road Bridge, you enter the Kingdom of Fife, where our first stop will be at Aberdour Castle, which is probably one of Scotland’s oldest standing castles, built in the 11th Century. Carry on to Perthshire, the heart of Scotland as its also known. With its many Glens and Forests, we will stop at some off the beaten track for some of those “Kodak” picture moments.

Then we reach the Highlands of Scotland, the real Scotland that you dream about, and our homeland.

Overnight in bed and breakfast in the Inverness area

Today we explore the Highlands of Scotland, starting with the Capital City “Inverness”. An ancient stronghold of the Picts and once visited by St Columba. Hear the history of this city.

We will then visit Culloden, the last ever pitched battle to be held on British Soil. The battle that also changed the Highlands of Scotland forever. Hear all about this from our historian guide and the lasting effects it had on the Highland people.

Overnight Bed and Breakfast in the Inverness Area

Today we leave the Capital of the Highlands and travel down the shores of Loch Ness, stopping at Urquhart Castle, where you will hear all about over 1000 years of history and conflict it has seen.

Carry on down the Great Glen stopping at Fort Augustus to see the canal locks. Onto Fort William, where we will stop to explore for a short time before carrying onto the scenic Glencoe, one of the most scenic and famous Highland Glens. Leaving Glencoe behind we travel across the Trossachs also known as the “Highlands in miniature” and the stomping ground of “Rob Roy MacGregor” one of Scotland’s many famous hero’s. Tour Itinerary

Tour information, tour route map.

On our Isle of Skye tour from Edinburgh we travel via Glasgow to the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park. We’ll make our first stop at the charming village of Luss which sits on the bonnie banks of Loch Lomond.

Sparkling lochs, tumbling waterfalls and majestic Munros takes us to Rannoch Moor and Glencoe. We’ll stop at Scotland’s most famous glen and hear about the infamous Glencoe Massacre of 1692, when the MacDonald’s were slaughtered by the Campbells.

At Glenfinnan we’ll climb up to the viewpoint for stunning views of Glenfinnan and Loch Shiel. You’ll see the 21 arches of the Glenfinnan Viaduct curve through the glen as the route to Harry Potter’s Hogwarts.

We’ll get off the beaten track for views over Loch Duich and the Five Sisters of Kintail before travelling over the bridge to the Isle of Skye.

Glencoe

Your friendly driver-guide has the flexibility to ensure you see the best of the island whatever the weather. Skye never disappoints – there is just so much to see.

You can’t miss Skye’s Mountain range, the Black Cuillins, which adorn calendars and paintings the world over. The sparkling crystal-clear waters of the Fairy Pools lie at the foot of the Cuillins and make for great photos, or even a spot of wild swimming!

We’ll have time to explore Portee and enjoy some lunch before we head to the Trotternish Peninsula. The awe-inspiring scenery never seems to stop, and we’ll get spectacular views at the Quiraing, Mealt Falls and Kilt Rock before we reach the famous landscape of the Old Man of Storr.

Fairy Glen

We cross the Skye Bridge on to the mainland and Eilean Donan Castle*. The castle sits on an island at a point where three great sea lochs meet, surrounded by majestic highland scenery. Eilean Donan was used in many films including Highlander and James Bond epic, The World is Not Enough.

The village of Fort Augustus lies at the southern end of Loch Ness and is lunch stop. You can enjoy an optional cruise on Loch Ness or take a stroll along the Caledonian Canal.

Our journey continues through the Cairngorms National Park, passing Blair Castle to Pitlochry for our final refreshment stop of the day. We return to Scotland’s capital city Edinburgh via the Queensferry crossing ending our 3-day Isle of Skye tour from Edinburgh.

22/03/23 – Helen and Whitney-May

This was just the most wonderful experience and I would like to commend you and Jerry (our tour guide) on what will likely be the absolute highlight of our trip to the UK (we still have a little while here but you’re going to be hard to beat!) A million thank you’s for this experience. It was all round amazing, from every annoying enquiry I sent last minute to the office, through to the on-the-ground offering. The carefully researched commentary, lovely bus, caring on time guest service levels provided by Jerry and well, the scenery -though not your making 🙂 –  was next level heavenly. I cannot recommend your tour more highly! Warm regards.

17/03/23 – Taylor

We LOVED our tour with Discover Scotland! Our guide Michael was amazing we could not have ask for anyone better. We enjoyed our whole trip from the bus rides hearing stories, history, songs and much more about Scotland, to our quick picture stops, all our longer spots where we had time to explore, and our free time in Kyleakin.  We felt like our interests were heard by our guide and we were given options and suggestions to do things we would enjoy.  The only thing we wished we could change was staying longer. We are very thankful for our guide and discover scotland for everything. Thanks for everything

02 /11/ 22 – Sergio

I had a wonderful time with Discover Scotland Tours. We had an amazing tour guide also our driver named Jerry! The tour had plenty of photographic stops from day 1. Driving through the Highlands into the Isle of Skye and to Loch ness the group and I could feel the magic Scottish atmosphere. Thank you Jerry for taking care of every single one of us and thank you Discover Scotland Tours for this fantastic experience.

10/10/22 – Vanessa

We had an amazing time! John our guide was perfect! I can’t say enough good things about him! He obviously loves his job and the island.  I appreciated how you kept in touch with me leading up to the tour and how responsive and clearly  you answered my questions. I will most definitely recommend John Black and your company to everyone willing to hear me go on about what an amazing experience we had. Thank you for everything and with some luck we will be making more plans with your company.

19/08/22 – Kylie + Corbin

Our 3-day Isle of Skye tour with Scott was unforgettable! Despite road closures to start the trip, Scott maintained positivity that radiated throughout the group. Each day brought adventure and memories that we will always cherish. It’s easy to see that Scott loves people and Scotland as he went out of his way to make sure everyone got to see and do what they set out to. We couldn’t have asked for a better experience and guide!

02/08/22 – Angelina

My friends and I recently went on the Isle of Skye, Highlands, and Loch Ness 3-day tour from Edinburgh, and it was the highlight of our vacation! Our tour guide, John Black, was quite the character. Throughout the whole trip, he was super cheery and always cracking jokes. His personal anecdotes, vast knowledge, and captivating story-telling provided us with a unique glimpse into the Scottish people, culture, and history. John was extremely accommodating for everyone on the tour, making frequent stops for bathroom breaks and food throughout the day. The bus itself was very comfortable, with AC and plenty of space for everyone, and had great views no matter where one sat. Our accommodation was booked through Discover Scotland as well, at Winklebeech bnb in Kyleakin. It had a quaint and homey vibe, and the owner was super welcoming. She was also extremely accommodating to our dietary restrictions and even offered us some bug spray after seeing all of our midge bites! The rooms were tidy and comfortable, with all the necessities one may need. We managed to hit all the destinations on the tour, and it ran very smoothly with no delays. We were especially in awe with the Isle of Skye- It’s a must-see for everyone who visits Scotland! Overall, I would HIGHLY recommend Discover Scotland Tours and would visit again in a heartbeat!

28 /07/22 – Roxanne

We had a wonderful time and it was through this tour that Scotland came alive for us. Our Tour Leader made a point of getting to know each of us. In between the gorgeous countryside and  the historical background Michael provided, he played songs told amusing stories and made it us feel like we were all part of one family. There were lots of stops for the bathroom and food as well. He was patient answering all of our questions and was respectful of the country’s we came from. We loved this tour and will be talking about it for quite some time. Also good value for our money.

11/07/22 – Darryl

We were very happy with our three day tour. This being our first, and probably only trip to Scotland, we appreciated the variety of things we saw and the general information about your country.

We were especially impressed with our tour guide, John Sheedy. In addition to being an all-around nice guy, he was very attentive to everyone’s needs and well prepared with interesting stories. Having grown up on the isle of Skye was a bonus. John conveyed his genuine love and pride of Scotland and made our trip fun and comfortable.

01/07/22 – Jessica

Mark and I had THE BEST weekend. It’s my first time in Scotland, and although it was a whirlwind, I’m excited to get back and spend more time in certain places. Accommodation was great, Garry was FANTASTIC. So warm and bubbly and knowledgeable and fun.  We’re both quite introverted and I was overwhelmed and missing my children and we never once felt pressured or intruded on, but also Garry made us both feel so seen and included, I was so grateful for how he handled us. Lots of stops, would be good to have a bit more time in some places, but I also really liked ticking lots of things off my list. It was also really relaxing, I slept on the bus all the time – as a parent it was just so lovely to not have to worry about ANYTHING.  Garry added a few fun things in that I wasn’t expecting which was so great! Lots of Harry Potter stops! A DINOSAUR FOOTPRINT! I just loved every minute.  I would do it again in a heartbeat. I hope you add some northern Scotland tours! Let me know if you do.

10/06/22 – Gráinne

My tour was the Isle of Skye, the Highlands & Loch Ness 3 day tour with Gary. The itinerary was great. Loved all the stops. Loads of time at each stop , didn’t feel rushed. Our tour guide, Gary, was fantastic. He had loads of fun facts and quips and kept us all motivated even though the weather was against us. Will definitely recommend Gary and the tour to anyone!

The village has some restaurants for evening dining and a shop should you require any necessities.

What about my accommodation?

Your tour excludes accommodation. During the tour booking process you will be asked if you are booking your own accommodation or whether you wish us to reserve this on your behalf?

Booking my own accommodation

If booking your own accommodation this should be in the village of Kyleakin where most of our customers will be staying. The nearby villages of Breakish or Broadford is fine, however some accommodation providers are situated on roads that even our small coaches cannot get down, so please check with us first at [email protected]

Please contact us to let us know the name of the accommodation you have reserved.

Above all, please ensure you are ready in plenty of time each morning.

Will I be able to pay by credit card while on tour?

In the Scottish Highlands many businesses do not accept card; particularly in rural areas where mobile signals are not very strong. Your driver will also take cash payment for any optional extras. Therefore, it is best to bring cash with you.

There are cash machines on route should you require to take out money while on tour.

Can I reserve a specific seat on the mini coach?

Seats are chosen on a first come first serve basis, we are unable to take requests for specific seats. Our mini coaches all have panoramic windows so the beautiful Scottish landscape can always be enjoyed, no matter where you sit.

If you suffer from motion sickness, then you may be affected by the roads in Scotland. They can be twisty and narrow. It’s best to come prepared with a travel sickness preventative, whether that be medicinal, wristbands or another option, to ensure it doesn’t impact your overall enjoyment of the tour.

Ancient Highlands tree at centre of fight against Dutch elm disease

Some 35 young elms have been transferred from Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh to the shadow of the “Last Ent of Affric”, a tree thought to be hundreds of years old

An ancient elm tree that has stood alone in a remote location in the Highlands for hundreds of years has been joined by dozens of seedlings as part of efforts to help save the species.

The wych elm — known as the Last Ent of Affric in homage to the tree-shepherds from Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings story — has been chosen to help in the fight against Dutch elm disease.

The fungal infection is spread by bark beetles and can quickly wither and kill healthy trees.

Thirty-five young elms have been transferred from the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh and replanted in the shadow of the Last Ent of Affric.

The seedlings will be the first of 200 trees planted over the next two years,
