Why You Should Have a Back-Up Travel Ring

We understand the predicament while traveling — do you take your chances and bring your pricey wedding ring with you or do you leave it at home? The last thing you want to happen when you’re on vacation is to lose your expensive wedding ring or have it be stolen. To prevent this from happening, we’ve created a complete collection of affordable travel wedding rings that are both durable and stylish.

Whether you're going on your dream honeymoon vacation or you're spending a weekend away in your favorite city, consider switching over to a travel engagement ring while exploring new destinations. You’ll be able to relax knowing your diamond ring is home safe in your jewelry box , but when you choose a travel ring from Modern Gents, you’ll have the satisfaction of a high quality replacement that still looks dazzling. That’s because we work hard to make sure that our travel jewelry rings are just as stunning as a classic wedding band — but at a fraction of the cost.

Ready to start seeing the world? Before you start exploring new destinations, make sure to swap out your expensive ring for one of our affordable vacation wedding rings from Modern Gents Trading Co.

What Style of Travel Ring Is Right for You?

Many people like to choose a style of travel ring that’s similar to their original wedding ring . Modern Gents offers dozens of designs so you can find one that’s just right! Our designers start with premium materials like 925 sterling silver and black tungsten carbide and then shape them into a huge variety of classic and contemporary styles.

Whether you want your center stone to be a classic cushion cut or a distinctive emerald cut , and whether you prefer a magnificent halo engagement ring or a splendid solitaire ring setting, we have the style you’re looking for. Many models are also available with multiple finish options, including a classic sterling silver ring or trendy rose gold . Oh, and if you want to maximize your sparkle options, be sure to check out our stackable wedding ring sets with engagement rings , wedding bands and even eternity rings!

On the other hand, if you’re an active vacationer who can’t wait to zipline through the Amazon or take a morning beach run in Bermuda, consider our lineup of silicone wedding bands . These soft rubber wedding rings are perfect for active lifestyles and help prevent the serious hand injuries that can happen if a ring gets caught on something.

Quality Travel Rings for the World Traveler

For a lot of people today, being a citizen of the world also means thinking about the ethical implications of the products you buy. That’s why all Modern Gents rings are 100 percent free of conflict gemstones and metals! What’s more, we’ve eliminated nickel and other common metals that can irritate your skin from all of our rings, so you’ll never have to worry about a green finger again.

If you’re looking for a beautiful, yet affordable engagement ring or promise ring , shop our wide selection of stunning jewelry pieces today to find your perfect fit! Some are comfortable taking their wedding rings on the road with them, while others prefer to travel with silicone. If it’s an option you might consider one day, our readers share their silicone rings reviews and their opinions on whether to travel with them or not.

Best Silicone Rings Comparison Chart

Where to buy silicone rings.

You can source silicone rings in store outlets, but most readers say there is a comprehensive silicone rings Amazon section that has a lot of choices and fun colors to choose from. You just need to remember your ring size when selecting.

How Long Do Silicone Rings Last?

They can be worn daily or just throughout your travels, and while they are fairly durable, they are actually meant to break if your finger gets snagged on something unexpected. Some brands will actually replace a damaged or broken silicone ring—just check when buying.

Reasons for Traveling With a Silicone Ring

There is no right or wrong answer when it comes to deciding whether you should travel with your wedding ring or bring along a silicone alternative. But, here are some potential reasons to leave your wedding ring at home.

You Won’t Lose It on Vacation

The most popular reason TFG readers trade their traditional wedding ring for a silicone one is because they don’t want to lose it or leave it behind. While you can absolutely lose your ring at home, readers cite reasons like scuba diving, snorkeling and beach visits as places where your ring might pop off.

One reader shares, “My wedding band belonged to my husband’s great grandmother and cannot be replaced. When I travel abroad I take a rubber ring or a fake, and leave it at home in the safe.”

Another reader chimes in, “I’m constantly taking mine off to put lotion on and when I sleep. I’d much rather misplace a $20 ring from Amazon than worry about it.”

When it comes to deciding whether to bring it or not, readers suggest evaluating the activities you’re planning and doing what you’re most comfortable with.

You Won’t Dent or Scratch It

Readers also share that another reason to trade your wedding set for a silicone ring is you won’t dent or scratch it along your adventures.

if you have a ton of interactive activities planned you might want to consider bringing something more durable and less sentimental.

It Might Not Fit Properly

If you’re headed to a destination that has a drastically different climate to the one you’re used to, there’s a chance your wedding band won’t fit properly. Things tend to contract in the cold and expand in the heat, and your ring and fingers are no exception.

One TFG reader shares, “I like to have a silicone ring because sometimes fingers swell when I travel or my metal rings get tight and if I take them off I’m afraid I’ll lose them.”

Reduce Your Risk of Ring Avulsion

Ring avulsion sounds horrible, and it kind of is. It happens when your ring gets caught on something and yanks your finger, causing injury. Without getting into too much detail, it can be an incredibly painful and damaging experience (to both your ring and you).

Unlike gold, silver, or other metal that your wedding ring is likely made of, silicone isn’t hard. If it gets caught, it tends to snag then break, saving your actual wedding ring and your finger!

While ring avulsion incidents are not immune to just traveling, the risk can increase for travelers taking a more active role—hiking, diving, trekking, or skydiving are some example activities. In that case, consider an alternative and choose from the rings featured above.

Reduce Your Risk of Becoming a Target

Another reason that TFG readers travel with silicone version or even a costume jewelry ring is they want to avoid becoming a target for thieves. Silicone rings can be less appealing to steal because of their lack of value.

Reasons to Wear a Wedding Ring

Many TFG readers do travel with their wedding rings because they feel the risk level of losing it or theft is not much different at home as it is abroad. If you do decide to travel with your wedding ring, here are a few tips.

Be Aware of Your Surroundings

When it comes to traveling with jewelry, most TFG readers say that the majority of places that they’ve traveled was a non-issue.

One reader takes regular jewelry when she travels and says, “As with any travel be careful, cautious, and be aware of your surroundings. That should always be a top priority.”

If you are in an area where you feel less comfortable, turn your ring inwards so your jewels aren’t visible.

Listen to Local Experts

If you happen to be on a guided tour or a travel excursion where a guide cautions you to take off your wedding rings, then heed their word. They’re the experts and they know the area best.

One reader reiterates this point by saying, “The only time it was an issue is when we were in Manaus, Brazil. We were on an Amazon cruise and it was recommended to wear no jewelry there. In that case, I put it in a safe place in our cabin.”

Leaving Your Wedding Ring at Home

If you’ve decided to leave your wedding ring at home, you’ll want to find a safe place for it.

Readers shared a few safe places to keep your rings and other valuables while you’re out of town:

  • In a safety deposit box at the bank
  • Locked in a safe at your house
  • With a trusted friend for safekeeping

One crafty reader even shares, “I actually take my rings to the jeweler before big trips to get cleaned and polished. Cheaper than a deposit box and it accomplishes a goal!”

Kim Cochin

I wear my real wedding band when traveling within the US/Canada and to Europe. However anywhere else I take this cheap CZ ring that looks similar to my real platinum with diamonds eternity band. It’s hard to find a size 5.5 in inexpensive rings so I’m happy I found this one!

I don’t wear it when snorkeling or diving however as my fingers shrink and I’d loose it, not to mention any bling could attract critters that I’d like to keep my distance from!

Alex

Hi Kim, thank you for sharing what you like to do with your wedding band when traveling. Happy travels! ?

This is by far the best travel bag I've ever had!

Leroy Holloway

This was the best trip I have ever been on thanks to this great product. Really good value for money. Falling asleep while traveling is always something I get nervous about because I worry about injuring my neck. This product saved me from this and I am going to make sure I pack it for every trip. This really is a must-buy for any traveller. I highly recommend it.

I am so pleased that I bought this travel-pillow for myself as I am away on business on a monthly basis. When I travel I find it hard to get into the right position for sleeping or resting. I was really grateful for this pillow as it made this the most comfortable journey that I have had in a long time. It is made out of super-soft materials and it felt really nice to just lay back in it and enjoy the journey. I will never travel again without it! A great value pillow that fits well into any of my cabin bags. The colour is very smart too which is important to me as I am a professional person. I love this pillow. So cozy!

The Best Resistance Bands For Travel and How to Use Them

Jan 12 The Best Resistance Bands For Travel and How to Use Them

Resistance bands are a great workout tool for travelers..

Resistance bands are one of the most underrated workout tools out there.

You’ll often find them neglected in a corner of the gym, but they are a great addition to most fitness routines.

From isolation exercises to bodyweight workouts, adding resistance bands will increase tension and improve muscle growth, while burning extra calories.

The best part of this resistance band praise is that they’re perfect for traveling. They’re small and light, meaning you can pack them in your carry-on and take them with you on the road.

So the next time you find yourself without an adequate gym (an all-too-common occurrence for travelers), just take your resistance bands out and get after it in your hotel room or outside.

Let’s take a look at the best resistance bands and how you can use them to get a great workout while you travel.

The Best Resistance Bands For Travelers

Resistance bands are a great addition to bodyweight exercises, making the movements more difficult and therefore increasing your strength.

So where to get started?

First, let's dive into the different types of resistance bands that you can bring with you while you travel. Then we'll get into how to use them.

Black Mountain Resistance Band Set ($28)

The Black Mountain Resistance Band Set is a top-seller on Amazon. It’s light enough to travel with and supports many different workout routines.

The five-piece set includes bands with interchangeable handles, a door anchor, an ankle strap, and five bands with a range of resistance.

Tribe Premium Resistance Band Set ($21)

The Tribe 11 Piece Premium Resistance Band Set includes five resistance bands that are color-coded to distinguish their weight tension— Yellow (5 lbs), Green (15 lbs), Red (20 lbs), Blue (30 lbs), and Black 35 (lbs) and a Pro Accessories kit that has two cushioned soft-grip handles, a door-safe anchor, two soft ankle straps, and a water-resistant carrying bag.

Rogue Fitness Monster Bands ($68)

Rogue makes some of the highest-quality fitness equipment you'll find. You can order their resistance bands individually, in pairs, or as a full set.

There are eight color-coded versions of their natural latex rubber stretch bands to choose from, each measuring 41” in length, but varying in width, thickness, and overall resistance.

Getting Started

Resistance bands are a great place to start for anyone new to strength training.

First, you need to choose the right bands. Resistance increases at the end of a movement, so band choice will depend equally on two things: your fitness level and the type of movement you are doing.

Be sure to choose bands that will provide enough resistance while training but are still light enough to allow you to maintain proper form throughout.

Go for a light, medium, and heavy band because you'll find yourself using each one with different muscle groups.

If you choose to go with the Black Mountain Resistance Band Set or a complete set of the Rogue Fitness Monster Bands, you will have a wide enough range of resistance to cover any fitness level.

The Full Body Resistance Band Workout

Resistance band workouts like the one below can be done right in your hotel room or at home.

Perform the workout as a circuit, meaning do one set of each exercise, then another round of the same, and so on until you have completed three rounds (or three sets of each exercise).

Hit each exercise name for a video demonstration.

Bicep Curls

Stand with your feet together on the resistance band to keep it anchored. Grip the other end of the band with both hands, palms up.

Simultaneously bend both elbows and pull the band up towards your upper chest. Lower the band back down to the starting position slowly, straightening both your arms.

Perform three sets of 15 reps.

Grasp the band on both ends and keep it anchored down by standing on it. Knees should be slightly bent and your head and chest should be up. Stand straight up and keep your back straight. The bands will be at waist level when you complete the movement.

Do three sets of 10 reps.

Place your feet on the band and hold the other end (or handles) with an overhand grip, keeping your hands around shoulder height.

Lower yourself down as if you are placing your butt onto a chair. Get your quads below parallel to the floor. Explode up and return to the standing position, pressing through your heels.

Complete three sets of 10 to 12 reps.

Resistance bands make push-ups more challenging.

Wrap the resistance band around your upper back and hold each end down with your hands as you get into the push-up position. Perform the push-up movement as you normally would but expect increased resistance at the top.

Perform three sets of 10-20 reps.

Band Pull-Aparts

Pull the bands apart while keeping chest and shoulders stable and without arching your back.

Do three sets of 10 to 15 reps.

33 Resistance Band Exercises You Can Do Literally Anywhere

Stretching With Bands

You can also use resistance bands to deepen your stretches and improve your flexibility.

The best time to stretch is after a workout, when your muscles are already warmed up. Stretch to your level of comfort and hold each stretch for ten to twenty seconds.

Here are three stretches you can do.

Hamstring Stretch

Lie on the floor and loop band around the right foot, grabbing onto the bands closer to your foot to create tension. Straighten the right leg as much as you comfortably can while keeping the left leg bent on the floor. Gently pull the right leg towards you, stretching the back of the leg. Switch sides.

Hip Stretch

Lie on the floor and loop the band around the right foot, grabbing onto the bands with the opposite hand. Straighten the left leg out on the floor and gently lower the right leg across the body and to the left as low as you can go feeling a stretch in the right hip and glute. Switch sides.

Chest Stretch

Grip the band with hands a few inches apart. Pull your arms out and down as low as you can to stretch the chest.

Get Free Shipping on orders over $25 at VitaminShoppe.com

Bottom Line

Resistance bands are perfect for staying fit while traveling. Add them to bodyweight exercises to increase resistance and give yourself an added challenge or use them for pulling movements that are often difficult to do without weights or a pull-up bar.

Travel + Leisure / Reese Herrington

Western wear, cowboy aesthetic, country couture — whatever you'd like to call it — has taken the fashion world by storm, but it's not just a mere passing trend. As a New York City-based travel writer , it's hard to go a block without seeing studded belts and vintage washed jeans , and the trend has spread far beyond Manhattan; I've even spotted it on recent trips up and down the East Coast. Though its resurgence in pop culture features new spins on the traditional fashion genre, Western wear obviously has roots dating back centuries, but there's something about the classic look that will forever exude cool. With celebrities like Beyoncé and Bella Hadid showcasing the best of the Americana lifestyle, this latest resurgence is beckoning everyone (including myself) to give their travel clothes a refresh.

Beyond looking sharp, the Western wear trend embraces easy-wearing, high-quality basics inspired by country living, making it a must-have for your travel wardrobe. It prioritizes timeless pieces like maxi denim skirts and cowboy boots that can be worn and reworn in a plethora of ways to maximize your travel outfit possibilities. These pieces are typically denim-, cotton-, leather, and suede-heavy, making them the ideal transitional garments that can be worn throughout spring (and some of our favorite finds can even be rocked in the summer).

Don’t know where to start transforming your wardrobe to embrace a Western aesthetic? I’ve curated a selection of pieces that I’m absolutely loving this season that will look great anywhere, be it a serene getaway in Wyoming , an exciting rodeo, or even to a "Cowboy Carter" listening party.

Tecovas The Annie Cowgirl Boots

Cowgirl and cowboy boots are undoubtedly one of the most prominent items emerging from the Americana fashion movement, and if you’re looking to embrace this shoe trend, then you should do so with the best: a pair of Tecovas . The Austin-based brand prioritizes authentic craftsmanship to make its top-quality, already-worn-in-comfy boots that are made to last. I’m utterly obsessed with this Annie style, the brand’s best-selling cowgirl boot, and am eager to add them to my collection because I know that they’ll be my comfortable go-to pair of boots that’ll last me years to come. Plus, they'll look equally wonderful with a pair of jeans as they would with a flowy dress.

If you’re looking for a more affordable option to achieve the same look, consider shopping the Soda Reno Women's Cowboy Boots that boast a $50 price tag at Amazon.

Madewell The Santiago Western Ankle Boots

Not quite ready for full-on cowboy boots? Or, maybe you're headed somewhere warm. Either way, if you want to dip your toes into the style, these Madewell ankle booties are the perfect way to start. Beyond their alluring 82 percent discount (thanks to an on-site double deal — just use the code SPRING30 to unlock an extra 30 percent off at checkout), they’re absolutely adorable. Country styles embrace shiny hardware and durable materials like suede, as seen on these boots, which’ll elevate any look that you have planned. And, because they’re crafted with elastic and a low block heel, they go on-and-off seamlessly and will be easy to walk in. Hurry, they're selling out.

J.Crew Maxi Denim Skirt

Maxi denim skirts, and denim in general, are totally country-approved thanks to their utility style that is a bit more polished and put together than a mini skirt. I’m all in for embracing more maxi denim skirts into my wardrobe. They can be styled with T-shirts, blouses, vests, and more, making them a welcomed, versatile staple in your suitcase. In fact, denim skirts are among the first garments that I look for when preparing for a trip, because of the way that they can seamlessly elevate any look. If you want to test the waters on this trend, do so with this stunning, on-sale skirt from J.Crew while it’s 46 percent off.

Wrangler Women’s Cowboy Cut Jeans

Wrangler is among the original cowboy couture brands, selling high-quality denim that parallels the rise of country since the 1940s. Needless to say, you can’t go wrong with anything from the cowboy fashion pioneer to adapt your wardrobe to Western style, but I recommend starting with these Cowboy Cut jeans. They effortlessly blend classic aesthetics with contemporary details for unmatched comfort. Crafted with 98 percent denim and 2 percent spandex, these jeans exude vintage charm with the modern ingenuity of a comfortable pair of travel pants. And at just $50, they’re the perfect garment to wear on your spring adventures.

Amour Vert Violette Organic Cotton Eyelet Dress

Amour Vert

Flowy, flirty dresses add a feminine touch to an otherwise rather masculine trend. And this prairie-style dress not only embodies the essence of country living, but it also serves as the ideal white sundress for the vibrant seasons of spring and summer. Crafted with 100 percent cotton, adorned with delicate details, and featuring a fashion-forward corseted bust, this dress is a timeless and breathtaking addition to your wardrobe. And to complete the look, I recommend pairing with a pair of cowboy boots — duh!

Sézane Women’s Amerie Shirt

This Western-style embroidered chambray snap shirt is an incredibly versatile choice that radiates versatility. With its long-sleeve design, this shirt offers year-round comfort while shielding you from the elements (without causing overheating). It’s also a stunning option to add to your collection of Americana-inspired garments, inviting endless styling options, whether paired with a denim skirt, jeans, or classic boots.

Unfortunately, this stunning top is about to sell out. If you have your heart set on the look, check out the newly dropped Grosy Women's Embroidered Plain Tunic Shirt for $40 at Amazon.

Free People Wilder Embellished Sling Bag

Free People

Conchos are the focal points of any Western look. Instead of wearing the classic disc around your waist, you can sport it on your travel bag. Here, the historically rich accessory decorates the belt bag's strap to add that cowboy flair to any outfit. It also offers the spacious, hands-free functionality of a great belt bag; wear it as a crossbody, off the shoulder, or as a belt bag, and will confidently safeguard all of your items as you explore new destinations this year.

Wrangler Western Shoulder Bag

For a larger option, this adjustable shoulder bag is winning over shoppers for boasting the " perfect size " and a " sturdy feel that feels well-made ." That also happens to be the ethos of Western fashion, prioritizing items that both look and feel good — just check out that stunning embroidery! And starting at just $52 and available in an impressive 50 different colors and prints, the Montana-styled bag is just waiting to be added to your cart.

Mavi Venus Denim Vest

Denim is widely recognized as a premium and long-lasting fabric, making it an ideal choice for outdoor activities and country living. Western wear is known for its practicality, and as such, many denim styles are adorned with functional pockets and comfortable cuts that are perfect for all-day wear. Take this stunning denim vest from Mavi, which features front pockets and a straight fit that can be styled in various ways (and will look great in each of them). Whether you choose to store your lip balm in one of the frockets (front pockets) or utilize them for your ID and cards, you will never regret adding this versatile top to your collection.

Quince Women’s Suede Trucker Jacket

It would be wrong to share a list of high-quality Western wear to add to your travel wardrobe without including a buttery soft suede jacket, and this one from Quince is just what your transitional wardrobe needs right now. It’s warm enough to wear as the temperatures continue to dip and rise, but remains lightweight and soft for hot days ahead. And since the trademark of this style is practicality, you can bet that this jacket is equipped with a few functional pockets to hold onto some of your small belongings.

Livingston Straw Cowboy Hat

Saddle up travelers! To bring your entire Western ensemble together, you need a cowboy hat. This iconic accessory not only exudes a relaxed and cool vibe, but it also serves a practical purpose. Originally designed to protect cowboys from the scorching sun while working outdoors, these hats have now become a versatile (and useful) fashion statement. This utility also lends them as the perfect accessory to shield your face from the sun at the beach, festivals, and beyond.

This lightweight hat can also travel like a dream with the help of a convenient hat clip . Plus, it gives your outfit more style points than any old baseball cap or sun visor would.

Steve Madden Women’s Recent Gladiator Sandals

Modern takes on Western wear draw inspiration from classic country accessories like the studded (and classic) concho belt — which are on full display in these Steve Madden sandals. I personally love a strappy gladiator for travel, as I find that they have more support and grip compared to other styles on the market. This pair caught my eye for its stunning look that I know would be a standout at any festival or vacation that I have planned this season.

Superdown Robyn Strappy Back Top

Plenty of these styles possess a classic and timeless appeal due to their simple yet classy look. However, the recent revival of this style has inspired retailers to think outside of the box and explore incorporating Americana prints, like cowhide, to give a fresh twist to this country craze. For instance, try out this stylish cow print top from Superdown, which will surely make a statement at any music festival or evening event that you have on the schedule.

Werforu Leather Belt

A true Western-inspired outfit is never truly complete without a concho belt. This $15 one from Amazon is embellished with beautifully etched hardware that’ll effortlessly pull together any look, while remaining understated enough to not cause too much attention. Style it with a pair of vintage wash jeans or wear it with a dress to give yourself some extra waist-cinching magic.

Independent Travel to Moscow and St. Petersburg

My wife and I have traveled independently to many European countries and, after reading many of the comments in this forum, feel like we may be able to do so in Moscow and St. Petersburg as well, although we feel somewhat less comfortable than the other countries where we have traveled in Europe.

My biggest question is how much we will miss by visiting the main sites without a tour guide. In the other European countries we have visited on our own we have been comfortable and satisfied with the level of knowledge we have gained by studying and visiting on our own, although we believe a tour guide or tour company in any country would normally be able to provide greater insight than visiting a site on our own, but about in Moscow and St. Petersburg?

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Unless you speak at least some Russian and read the alphabet it would be difficult without a guide. Very few signs in English especially in Moscow. Also not too many people speak English there.

I visited St Petersburg last Autumn for a protracted period , and did not find it anymore daunting than any other European city . As Ilja says , learning the Cyrillic alphabet is a big plus . I also found that it was fairly easy to grasp . It will , among other things , enable you to read signs with relative ease . I would answer the main part or your question ( about tour guides ) thus - I am not enamored of tour guides or tours. While I only use a tour under duress ( A sites rules prohibiting an independent visit - ie Glasgow School of Art , Municipal House in Prague , etc ) . Doing your own preparation and homework is the best way , in my opinion . My wife and I ventured through St Petersburg with nary a concern ,and made two day trips outside of the central district ( one was twenty five miles away , and no English speakers in sight ) Figuring out the logistical details , did not present any difficulties . While I never use tours , I am an inveterate eavesdropper , have done so many times , and find , that on balance , the information that they impart is fairly elementary . If you want greater detail , they are unlikely to supply it . I also prefer to go at my own pace , not being rushed and being able to dwell on things that most other visitors barely give a passing glance . If you are interested , let me know . I would be happy to provide you with information that will enable you to travel independently

Thank you, Steven. I am encouraged by your comments and feel the same way you do about tour groups. We are very much willing to prepare in advance and learn the basics of the Cyrillic alphabet to help us have a better experience.

I would be very interested in learning more about your experience in Russia and receiving any additional information you can provide on independent travel there, starting perhaps with obtaining the visa.

I am not opposed to hiring a private or small group guide for a specific site or for a day trip outside St Petersburg and Moscow, but, like you said, I much prefer the freedom of staying at places as long or short as I want and seeing the sites that interest me most. For example, neither my wife nor I are big into shopping, yet most tour itineraries leave afternoon time for just that. Not interested!

Please provide whatever you may feel would be helpful for us.

Russ , I see you are quite near San Francisco - you can start by looking at the VISA procedure , it's fairly straightforward . Since there is a consulate in San Francisco - look here http://www.consulrussia.org/eng/visa-sub1.html

And here - http://ils-usa.com/main.php

Having always traveled independently, we thought we could do a better job than any tour. How misguided (pun intended) we were. Now that we have had the experience of having someone native to the area walk us around and explain things through a personal perspective we realize how much we missed. For St. Petersburg I highly recommend http://www.peterswalk.com/tours.html . This is not a traditional guided tour, but an opportunity to receive some orientation to the area as well as insight into the "Russian soul". I think if you did this upon arrival the rest of your time would be much more meaningful. We really liked the http://www.pushka-inn.com . The location is superb (just around the corner from the Hermitage square), the rooms lovely, the included breakfast at the restaurant next door ample and overall an excellent value. We used this company to get our visa: https://www.passportvisasexpress.com/site/san_francisco_customer_service Note that it costs about the same for a 3-year visa as a one-year, and you never know if you might want to return within that more extended window of time. It is not cheap, so factor that into your planning.

If you like traveling without a guide in other countries and find this satisfying, the same will be true in Moscow and St. Petersburg. Of course it's not either/or - you can certainly take a guided walk or boat tour, for instance.

I cannot emphasize enough the importance of learning Cyrillic if you're going on your own. The book I used was Teach Yourself Beginner's Russian Script, which was great. It breaks down the alphabet into letters that are the same as English, letters that look the same but are pronounced differently, etc. It's out of print, but you can get used copies on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Teach-Yourself-Beginners-Russian-Script/dp/0071419861/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1459701143&sr=8-2&keywords=teach+yourself+russian+script

Russia is indeed a bit more "foreign" than say, Italy. However, in Moscow and St. Petersburg, I found enough English to be able to get by. Many restaurants had English menus and/or English speaking staff, for instance. This was most emphatically not true in Vladimir and Suzdal (two cities in the Golden Ring outside Moscow). I went with my sister, a Russian speaker, and if she hadn't been there, I would have been in big trouble. So, if you want to see places outside these two big cities, use a guided tour (even if just for that part). Also, Moscow and St. Petersburg are huge cities. Coming from New York, I wasn't intimidated, but those not used to a megacity may not be so cavalier (even I found them overwhelming at times, especially Moscow).

I found both Lonely Planet and Rough Guide to be helpful, and both to have various errors. Look at both, buy whichever one has a more recent edition, and then be prepared to have to discard some of the advice therein. Also, these places change more quickly than places in Western Europe. Be very careful of outdated advice. For instance, I was there in 2001 and 2010, so I won't give you any specifics on getting a visa - that changes constantly.

Just as a teaser, two things I saw and loved that I doubt would be included in any escorted tour are the Gorky House in Moscow (an Art Nouveau wonder) and the Sheremyetov Palace in St. Petersburg (it's now a museum of musical instruments, and the decor is amazing, particularly in the Etruscan Room).

Thanks for all the good advice. Any additional thoughts are welcomed.

One of history's seminal works pertaining to Russian history and culture and a MUST for anyone contemplating a visit or simply interested , is this fine work from 1980 - http://www.amazon.com/Land-Firebird-The-Beauty-Russia/dp/096441841X

This is about you and not about Petersburg. Do you like guided tours? We don't and didn't find that a guide added to our experience in China where we did hire private guides mostly for the logistics; it was easy to have someone drive us places. But once at a site, we didn't need the guide. I felt the same way about our 9 nights in Petersburg. We did hire a guide for the trip to the Catherine Palace again for the ease of logistics for us Olds. Here is our visit: https://janettravels.wordpress.com/2016/01/23/an-easy-trip-to-the-catherine-palace/ There are also snapshots of the Church on Spilled Blood in this photo journal. Having someone pick us up at the apartment and get us in without line ups and shepherd us through the palace steering clear of the tour groups was lovely. But we didn't need commentary because we can read and prepare.

You certainly don't need a guide for the Hermitage (we spent 4 days there), the Russian Museum, the Kazan Cathedral or Church on Spilled Blood or the Faberge Museum. We enjoyed a number of self guided walking tours including a couple from Rick Steves guidebooks. We took the canal cruise suggested by RS that had an English commentator. I would not take one without that as you will be totally clueless. The commentator was not all that good but at least we had some idea what we were seeing. So for people like us who like to do our own thing and can read a guidebook and don't particularly like to be led about, a tour is not needed. If you enjoy tour groups, then go for it. Petersburg is easy to negotiate. It helps if you can read the cyrillic alphabet and it is also useful to have the google translate ap on your phone. We found ourselves translating packages in grocery stores with it and the occasional museum sign or menu. I have one food I need to avoid and so it was handy to have the translator to talk with waiters (I could either show them the sentence, or play it for them or play it to myself and then repeat it to the waiter -- that all worked well)

Dear Russ, I cannot help you with Moscow, but about four years ago, my husband and I went to St Petersburg on our own. But, we did use a private guide for 4 half days. We both feel that our guide absolutely made our trip (we stayed 6 or 7 nights). We used a company owned by Tatyana Chiurikova, www.tour-stpetersburg.com I cannot say enough good things about her and our experience. I emailed her and we worked out a schedule/ sights that was tailored to our interests. She also offered some recommendations, which we took. The guide will meet you at your hotel. And frequently, at certain places, with the guide, we were able to skip the long entrance lines. We had an half day driving tour of the city (car, driver, & guide). You are taken to & go in places such as Peter & Paul Fortress, some of the cathedrals, etc. We had a half day with the guide at the Hermitage which ensured that we would see the major sights there. And, of course, you can stay after your guide leaves or return another day. Also, we had the guide for Peterhof (a must & go by boat) and Catherine's Palace. I hope that you will go to the website. As I said, our guide made our trip. I am positive that we would have missed quite a bit on our own everyday. And I'm sure we would have wasted a lot of time trying to get to various place. This was the best of both worlds, a guide where needed and plenty of time on our own. Whatever you do, I'm sure that you will love St Petersburg! Ashley

I am curious about the lines as we encountered no lines on our trip -- but it was in September. We got tickets for the Hermitage at machines and skipped those lines and our guide for the Catherine Palace which was our only guided experience (as noted before, chosen for the logistics of getting there) had arranged tickets and we didn't have a line, but then we also didn't see lines. We did not find lines at any other site.

Both Moscow and St Petersburg I've done on my own, that is together with the Dear Partner. I can't remember any problem getting where we wanted to go. The Metro systems are well signed, and with a little exercise and patience you can recognize the station names. With a good map and a good guide - we had the Rough Guides - that part of the logistics is solved. The language is a major problem, but the usual tricks of pointing, looking helpless, and making a joke of it all do wonders. I would hate to be led by a guide, but for others it is a comfortable thought.

We also did both cities on our own. I found the DK Eyewitness guide for Moscow has the best map. I used the one from our library (kept the book at home). Took the smaller RS book for St. Petersburg ( his book on northern cities). His map and restaurant ideas were all good. We also downloaded the Google maps in our Android Samsung tablets/phones for both cities and then could get directions to any place we typed in. The blue ball guided us everywhere. I'm sure we missed somethings by not having a guide, but we just enjoy walking around and getting a sense of a place. If you like art, The Hermitage is great. We went 3 times and still missed alot. In St. Peterburg we stayed at the 3 Mosta which we loved (quite and not far from the Church of Spilled Blood.) We also loved the Georgian food in both cities. There's a great Georgian restaurant near the 3 Mosta hotel. We're now in Belarus- very scenic. Enjoy your trip!!

The best Apple Watch bands for working out in 2024

The Apple Watch is one of the  best fitness trackers , so you'll want to outfit it with a strap designed specifically for working out. Regardless of how you stay active, wearing one of the best Apple Watch bands for working out is a great way to maximize your exercise time.

Some of our favorites include the Apple Sport Band . It has a comfortable design, comes in several color options, and has an easy-to-use clasp. We also like the Otterbox Terrus Band . It's comfortable against the skin, durable, and made from recycled materials.

Below are the best Apple Watch bands for working out. Although they're intended for the Series 9, SE, and Ultra 2, many also work with older models as far back as the first Apple Watch. It's smart to double-check the sizing of the band and your watch before purchasing, though.

To see more of the best Apple Watch bands , check out our picks of the  best metal Apple Watch bands  and the  best designer Apple Watch bands .

Best Apple Watch bands for working out

What is the best apple watch band for working out .

This mostly comes down to personal preference, as some folks may prefer to wear a rubber strap while others may like the look and feel of woven nylon. Deciding between the two comes down to which one you feel is more comfortable against your skin while wearing it normally and while working out.

It's worth noting that a rubber strap may be a bit easier to clean as it won't need as much time to dry off as a nylon band would.

What is the best Apple Watch band for runners?

While this is subjective based on personal preference and comfort, some Apple Watch sport bands are better than others for running, particularly those made of rubber with a design that promotes airflow.

For instance, the Nike Sport Band features a perforated design that helps keep the watch lightweight and breathable, two things that are vital to runners (especially those covering long distances).

Are Apple-branded sports bands better than third-party options?

Not necessarily. So long as the third-party option comes from a reputable brand like Nike, Nomad, Otterbox, or others. Apple-branded sports bands are premium bands, but they aren't the only option you have when picking out one of the best Apple Watch bands for working out.

What's the best material for an Apple Watch sports band?

The best materials to look for when shopping for an Apple Watch band for working out are either rubber (sometimes referred to as fluoroelastomer) or woven nylon.

Almost all sports bands you'll come across feature one of these materials and the reason is that these are both highly durable, lightweight, comfortable, and (mostly) breathable. They also tend to be easy to clean.

Should you wash your Apple Watch band after working out?

While you don't need to wash your Apple Watch band after every workout, wipe any excess sweat off of it when you're done exercising. This means physically taking off the watch and wiping down the inside of the band and the watch itself.

However, to ensure the long-term usability of the best Apple Watch bands for working out, you  should clean them often . This helps preserve its durability and also helps prevent bacteria from forming, which can potentially irritate your skin.

If you do start to see any irritation or a rash forming, take your watch off, wash the band, and let the irritation heal before putting it back on.

Can you wear an Apple Watch sports band every day?

Yes, you absolutely can. Apple Watch sports bands aren't strictly for working out, especially if you want them to give off a sporty everyday look. They're stylish in their own way and don't need to be reserved for going on a run or lifting weights.

Are these Apple Watch bands compatible with all Apple Watch models?

No, many Apple Watch bands are only compatible with certain Apple Watch models, so it's important to check the sizing of both the band and your Apple Watch to ensure a proper fit. For instance, bands that fit the smaller Apple Watch Series 9 may not work for the Apple Watch Ultra 2, and vice versa.

We have officially awarded the title of weirdest band at Coachella to Clown Core

travel worn band

When festivalgoers packed into the Sonora tent Friday for the venue's last set of the day, avant-garde jazz and grindcore duo Clown Core, they had some idea of what they were getting, but it was even stranger than most could probably imagine.

The weirdness started with a lengthy intro video warning the audience of flashing lights before switching to a new-age video showing Earth from outer space before quickly zooming into the location of the Empire Polo Club. A message flashed across the screen that said “The Earth is flat” as suspected members Louis Cole (drums) and Sam Gendel (saxophone) began playing an abstract jazz song.

The audience was a mix of people who were interested in catching a glimpse and some who were turned off from the beginning and headed to the exit. The musicians switched between sample machines, keyboards and saxophone performing some cheesy '80s-sounding jazz to angry saxophone music and grindcore. The drummer played the sampler with one hand while pounding a snare drum with the other.

Clown Core also played a video that showed what appeared to be their trip to the Coachella Valley waiting in line at a McDonald’s drive-thru, going through trash bins, using portable toilets, walking through neighborhoods and other bizarre scenes.

Details aside, we've dubbed it the weirdest set we've seen this year at Coachella, but take a look at this snippet and decide for yourself:

I Can’t Stop Buying Bodysuits

Portrait of Brenley Goertzen

We all have those formative moments that stick with us — and one of mine happens to be buying my first bodysuit from the (not yet bankrupt) American Apparel store in Uptown, Minneapolis. It was solid black with a high neckline and a brief-style bottom — but more important than how it looked was how put-together and effortless it made me feel. No longer was I wrangling a scrunched-up T-shirt into the waistband of my jeans ; instead, I had a smooth and cinched silhouette. Not to mention that the bodysuit reminded me of the stretchy, Jane Fonda–esque pieces that I grew up admiring in my mom’s closet (she competed as a rhythmic gymnast for the Canadian national team in the ’80s — so she knew a good leotard when she saw one).

Now, about ten years after buying the American Apparel bodysuit, I’ve purchased many more from other brands and still build almost every outfit around one. Yes, I know they have some detractors — but to me, bodysuits are the perfect wardrobe staple because they essentially combine your favorite top and underwear into one. And since I’ve been hunting for them for so long, I now have pretty high standards for how they should fit and feel. My ideal bodysuit needs to be comfortable and stay in place all day long, and the bottom closure shouldn’t be impossible to snap up in a tiny bathroom stall. The right balance of stretch and support is also key, and it has to stand up to regular machine washings. Finally, bodysuits can be quite pricey, so I’ve always looked for options that are affordable without sacrificing quality.

As one of the Strategist’s resident experts on clothing basics , I’ve tested many of the most popular styles on the market. Below are some of my favorites — all of which are hanging in my closet right now — including the bodysuit that outranks them all.

The powerhouse (that’s a worthy Skims dupe)

Pumiey Women's Crew Neck Long Sleeve Bodysuit

I stumbled across this Amazon bodysuit while scrolling through TikTok (shocker, I know). It’s made of 76 percent polyamide and 24 percent elastane — the exact material makeup of the Fits Everybody fabric from Skims — so I quickly placed an order to test it for myself. It’s now my hero bodysuit. I wear it on repeat because it’s so damn dependable: The crewneck is ideal for layering or wearing on its own, and the fabric is exceptionally soft and smooth. It pulls me in without feeling constrictive, and I’ve never had any issues with the snap-button closure. A stylish friend of mine actually mistook it once for Skims, which says a lot about how solid of a dupe it is. I’ve since purchased it in more colors and own other styles from Pumiey, and I’m happy to report that they all fit just as well and cost under $30.

The one I own in three colors

Aritzia Contour Squareneck Longsleeve Bodysuit

Aritzia’s signature Contour bodysuits are well known for their stretchy and smoothing double-layer fabric. The first style I bought from the brand was the popular square-neck long-sleeve, which became my most-worn bodysuit for many years. The sturdy material, made of a blend of nylon and elastane, keeps its shape all day but is lightweight enough to feel like a second skin. It’s double-lined, meaning my bra won’t show through, and it has enough support that sometimes I even opt for going braless. I can pair it with practically any kind of bottoms — a skirt, jeans , or even leggings — making it particularly versatile. I also appreciate the shade range Aritzia offers; I own it in black, camel, and a mauve-y pink. Just note: All Aritzia bodysuits are final sale, so I suggest going in-store if you’re unsure about sizing.

The go-tos for layering

Skims Fits Everybody Camisole Thong Bodysuit

Skims makes our favorite shapewear, and I’m also a big fan of its bodysuit selection. Its coveted Fits Everybody fabric, which consists of polyamide and elastane, truly does live up to the hype. It’s compressive yet breathable, and the high-cut leg ensures a barely-there feel whether I wear it under a pair of jeans or trousers. Slim adjustable straps give customizable support on top; meanwhile, on the bottom, the thong back means there’s no VPL (visible panty line), making it much easier to layer. It also has a strong two-button closure. Personally, I prefer pulling the crotch fabric way to the side to use the toilet, and these snaps have never come undone during that process. The brand’s inclusive sizing — from XXS to 4X — is another reason I recommend its bodysuits. The only drawback is the $60 price tag, which makes this one of the pricier options on this list.

Skims Fits Everybody Square Neck Bodysuit

Here’s another tank-style bodysuit that I own from the Fits Everybody collection. I find the square neckline and wider straps also make this one versatile and easy to layer.

Abercrombie & Fitch Soft Matte Seamless Squareneck Bodysuit

I’ve been super impressed with the quality and affordability of Abercrombie’s clothing basics. I don’t own this exact bodysuit, but the one I have — a tank with a V-neckline and wider straps — is made from the brand’s same Soft Matte material. It’s a blend of nylon and elastane, which I think feels softer than Aritzia’s Contour fabric (probably because it contains a higher percentage of elastane). I would also consider it to be the thickest on this list, but it’s never suffocating. I like to wear mine under a cardigan or sheer top for extra coverage.

The ones I wear for special occasions

Aritzia Contour V-Neck Longsleeve Bodysuit

I also own this deeper V-neck from the Contour line, which I like for dressier events. It offers a nice held-in effect (although I find the neckline verges on being a little too revealing for more casual gatherings).

Abercrombie & Fitch Long-Sleeve Crepe Asymmetrical One-Shoulder Bodysuit

I’m a sucker for a one-shoulder top, which is why I purchased this asymmetrical long-sleeve number. It’s polyester and elastane, so it’s high-stretch and feels slightly silky. It also feels cool to the touch, so I never overheat when wearing this bodysuit. It’s not a style I reach for super often, but I like that it can take me from day to night.

Aritzia Contour Deco Bodysuit

I bought this off-the-shoulder bodysuit about a month ago, and though I’ve only worn it a few times, it’s been a nice addition to my closet for transitional spring weather. I chose the beige shade and can confirm that the Contour fabric is still as sturdy as ever with lots of coverage, even in this lighter color.

pet-tree-kor’s Green Helicteres Isora Jacket.

We find ourselves in that time of year dedicated to the most sensuous and worldly of the earth signs — that is, Taurus season. We are so grateful for our baby bulls, because they remind us that food, drink, sex and money exist to be experienced in all their glory. And what better way to indulge in all these things than by traveling? Liberate your carefully selected and impeccably preserved vintage designer purse strings (we’re talking Taurus, after all) and go somewhere.

The ritual of travel is as visceral as it is spiritual. It’s the sweat collecting under your collar while you speed-walk to your gate (just to make sure it’s there, right?) as much as it is a 4 a.m. kiss on a starry beach accessible only by motorcycle. And the ritual before the ritual — packing — becomes a delicate, fraught dance of selection, a personal curatorial Everest that requires the traveler to dream, first and foremost, of how rainy the breeze might be on the way up the Eiffel Tower, how they might dress for both a rooftop dinner and a volcanic hike just outside San Salvador, if they’ll long for a stiletto boot at the Beijing opera or be too entranced by the show to care that they brought the flats instead. The careful balance of environmental factors in wardrobe selection, however, comes secondary to the crown jewel of functionality: the all-purpose travel jacket .

Trip jacket selection is an art and a science, best done elegantly, with attention paid to form, function, aesthetics and viability — as a pillow when folded into fourths or eighths on a long-haul flight. It should be able to take you to a museum and a visit to the botanical gardens with street food in hand on the same day. For this, may I suggest pet-tree-kor’s Green Helicteres Isora Jacket . The Shanghai-based imprint’s name is a nod to “petrichor,” a functionally and mystically perfect word that exists solely to describe the divine perfume that greets your nostrils after a rain (a smell that, allegedly, humans can detect more astutely than a shark’s nose can detect blood).

This garment, rendered in a tweed blend with a gorgeously mossy sheen, is both architectural in its structure and fluid in its silhouette. It looks at once inviting and familiar — almost like your most gallant grandfather’s jacket from the days he used to go out dancing with your grandma — and polished and elegant. It wouldn’t look out of place in a cozy diner on a rainy night in San Francisco’s Chinatown or on a dewy morning at the Rhode Island beach house of your friend with generational wealth. The shade of the jacket is an oft-underrated neutral, pairing nicely with virtually any other piece in your suitcase, maybe even amethyst or royal blue too. The Helicteres isora, the jacket’s namesake, is a vibrant plant from northern Oceania whose leaves dry in tawny-green curlicues, like nature’s fractals.
