The Wiapara Wine Experience

Indulge in a day of wine tasting in the Waipara Valley wine area, renowned for its warm, dry climate and limestone-rich soils, on a guided tour.

Following pickup from central Christchurch, your guide takes you on a 50-minute drive to Waipara. Visit cellars and tasting rooms during guided tours at three of the finest boutique vineyards in North Canterbury, and sample a selection wines and enjoy a lunch of a fresh, seasonal platter.

The Wineries:

•    Pegasus Bay Winery: the most famous winery in the region with world renowned Pinot Noir and Rieslings •    Greystone Wine: North Canterbury's most awarded winery.  •    Torlesse Wines: Our usual lunch venue, everybody gets their own winery platter. V, Vg and GF options available.  •    Terrace Edge: NZ Organic Vineyard of the Year 2018 and 2021. Truly remarkable wines. •    Waipara Springs: The first winery/café in the region •    Georges Road: Superb hand-made wines, with a trophy winning dry Riesling

All the wineries visited are family-owned and run and feature a wide range of wine varieties and styles. You will visit the three of these wineries based on their availability.

Important Information

Departure Point - Tour departs from a pre-arranged central Christchurch pick-up point at between 10.00 and 10.30am. Please note - If you arriving at Lyttelton you will need to book a Private Tour - the Shared Tour is not suitable for cruise ship passengers   

Duration - Allow 6 hours with lunch

Return Details - Returns to original departure point – unless otherwise arranged at about 4.15pm.

Waipara wineries are internationally renowned for producing Pinor Noirs, Pinot gris, Rieslings, Chardonnay and Savignon Blancs. Tour can be modified to include more wineries and also craft beer and if you have specific wineries you would like to visit we can include these. Generally the three wineries we visit are Pegasus Bay, Waipara Springs and Waipara Hills.

Less than one hour drive from Christchurch and Hanmer Springs, the Waipara Valley is a relatively new wine region in New Zealand, with production first established in 1978.

Tussock Hill Vineyard (opens in new window) is not actually one vineyard but two. While the main vineyard is in Waipara Valley, North Canterbury, Tussock Hill has a second, boutique vineyard in the Port Hills, 15 minutes’ drive from the Christchurch city centre.

Here you’ll find the Tussock Hill Cellar Door and Restaurant, which serves exceptional food alongside Tussock Hill’s organic wines.

Head chef Jackson Mehlhopt has created a n impressive menu using local ethically - sourced ingredients. Dishes change with the seasons, but previous line-ups have included dry aged gamefish, daikon, orange and fermented kūmara dressing, magnolia and rhubarb granita, and Milmore Down’s onion braised grain risotto. If they’re serving triple-cooked Agria potatoes with onion dip, don’t pass this up.
