Removal of cruise control module on steering wheel
- Add to quote
The other day the set button on my cruise control broke ( the system works just the plastic tab broke off). Do I have to replace the entire module or can I just purchase the little button and push it back into the right spot. If I do have to change the entire module, it looks like I just have to pop that screw cover on the back of the steering wheel to replace it. Does anyone have any suggestions?
Have to replace the entire module. Though not that expensive nor hard to do. Cost me $81 bucks out the door. To replace it: 1. Have the car turned off. 2. On each side of the steering wheel there are screw caps. remove them. 3. Remove the screws. (one on each side) 4. Gently pull the airbag assy away from the steering wheel, (don't want to break wire wire connection for the airbag.) 5. You can disconnect the airbag. (I didn't) 6. The module is held in place by two screws(simple remove/replace) 7. Put back together in reverse order. Took me about 30 min total time.

Thanks everyone. I looking at it today I see the screws but will try to use some special flexible glue I have to attach the left side of the switch since the right side snaps are still good. If not , replacement
Can't glue the center of the button on the little tabs, those tabs are also the way the button works. I you glue in the wrong spot or too much, the button will glue solid and not work. That happened to me once.
Thanks so much for the heads up. I figured I woudl try putting some very flexible gasket maker on the left side of the switch so it is allowed to rock on the center point (the actual switch) and see what happens. I figure the worst that can happen is I have to replace the switch which I would have to do anyway. Its been an expensive week, put on new rubber figuring that was the noise from the corners which turned out to be the rear bearings. The rear rotors needed to go so I wound up spending a few hours and a several hundred in parts basically replacing everything. Now with the new rear frame assembly (my bearings started to make noise after they replaced that part) and all the other stuff, I am good to go for another 100k miles!
Here is an update on the switch fix. I used silicon gasked maker (for the strength and flexibility), put two dabs of the stuff on both ends of the switch cover(top and bottom looking forward) so I could basically make custom pads that would attach the left side fo the switch cover to the base of the switch. Put some duck tape to hold it in place and it worked perfect. There is a little more "play" in the switch since it is attached using the flexible gasket maker rather then the hard plastic that inserts into the left side of the switch but after a day I got used to it and I saved myself a few bucks. Should it fall off again, I will do the same thing.
Glad this was already posted....Thanks P3..... The SET button broke on mine.....$105 from the dealer for the entire assy... Off to the garage........
