Questacon: Why visit the Canberra science museum?

The Questacon science museum in Canberra is the most fun museum in the Australian capital. The Canberra science museum brims with interactivity, and most kids will love it.

If you choose to visit the capital of Australia , there are several excellent museums to enjoy in Canberra . The Australian War Memorial is profoundly moving, the National Museum of Australia explores dozens of aspects of the country in manageable chunks and the National Capital Exhibition is all about the city itself.

But if you’re just wanting pure, unabashed fun, Questacon is the easy winner. This Canberra science museum is aimed largely at kids, but there is plenty for adults to sneakily enjoy too.

What to see at Questacon, Canberra

It starts off in the foyer of this Canberra science museum, where a humanoid robot can be controlled via a touch screen. That soon gives way to Fundamental, which is the most classic science museum section of Questacon. Here, exhibits such as the light harp and kaleidoscope show off aspects of how our world works. There’s also the strangely hypnotic Gravitram, which sees billiard balls travel along a convoluted series of metal pathways.

The Awesome Earth section is another highlight. Here, the Earthquake Lab allows you to experiment with the building styles and materials that best withstand earthquakes, and the Quakemaker lets you set off fake quakes by jumping in front of a seismometer. The Cloud Chamber, Caged Lightning and Sediment Tank exhibits are all reasonably self-explanatory, but great fun to play with too.

The Excite@Q section of Questacon is probably the most kid-friendly, however. This is all about learning through play, whether creating sounds by walking through light beams, playing air hockey or wooshing down a six metre slide.

The six metre freefall slide at the Questacon science museum in Canberra.

Where is Questacon, the Canberra science museum?

Questacon (officially Questacon – the National Science and Technology Centre ) is on the shore of Lake Burley-Griffin . It’s sandwiched between the National Library of Australia and the National Gallery of Australia. The National Carillon on Aspen Island is just to the north-east, and the National Rose Garden, Old Parliament House and Parliament House are just behind it.

General admission to the Questacon science museum in Canberra costs $24.50 for adults and $18.90 for children. You’ll go past it on an hour-long Canberra Segway tour .

Despite its age, the property was tidy. While some of the furnishings and fixtures were a bit dated, they were all functional and in good working order. The amenities were plentiful and included everything one might need for a basic stay, from a limited kitchen to high-speed internet. Overall, while the property may not be the most modern or luxurious, it was certainly cozy, convenient, and well-equipped.

The location was perfect for us. The unit was very comfortable and clean. The pool was a great spot and the pizza was amazing

This was our second stay and it was great. The facilities at the Park are great and our interactions with the staff were excellent. Theres plenty for the kids and adults to do or see, and the location is handy to the centre of Canberra or surrounding sights such as Black Mountain.

great location, comfortable, clean, our second stay here and have booked again for next year

A lot of funs for kids. Swimming pool, playground and basketball court etc.

Onsite restaurant right next to the pool was great. Lots for kids to do. Cabins were a good size and very comfortable.

It was a good location (easy to go to where I needed to), the bed was surprisingly comfortable, and the TV options were great (same as my TV at home so I worked it easily).

Location and facilities where really good for a family.

Very comfortable modern villas. Really well equipped park with pool and water play areas, playground and sports courts. Having a restaurant onsite was also fantastic

Great location!

Road Trip Inside

All for Your Next Road Trip!

Sydney Melbourne via Canberra Inland Trip Planner

Sydney, Canberra & Melbourne are famous cities that attract millions of people to visit every year. However, suppose you want to plan a road trip between these cities by driving. This article will show you the best route plan & itinerary from Sydney to Melbourne via Canberra in Australia.

There are two routes for self-driving road trips between Sydney and Melbourne. The first route will drive the coastal highway. The second route is the inland highway, so that I will show you this inland route for a road trip across M31 Highway.

Before You Take Action

I must say that I haven’t been to every attraction on this road. So here I just tried some practical recommendations for road trips by my friends & residents and wrote itineraries using my experience as suggestions.

You don’t need to follow my whole plan; arrange it, add and remove some places in your mind, and consider your limited day & budget. So, hopefully, you will enjoy a fun fill & unforgettable road trip of your own!

Sydney Melbourne Via Canberra Drive Route Map Overview

Drive to Melbourne to Sydney that have two routes; let’s check these two route maps:

Sydney to Canberra to Melbourne drive route map Australia

( Click on Google Map )

As the first map you see, this M31 is an inland highway, faster than the A1 highway along the coast and its main route linking Sydney and Melbourne.

Enter the state of Australia Capital Territory (ACT) when you have a road trip on the highway. In this state, a journey in Canberra near the state New South Wales border is about 286km Distance by self-drive.

How Many Kilometers Is This Route?

If just departing from Sydney, it’s 862 km total distance, but if you add the Canberra trip, that’s 932km total.

Note : You must avoid the tolls before entering the downtown City (Either Sydney or Melbourne) on M31. Make sure you already set up ETC no matter whether you rent or own the car, but you have to set “avoid toll “on the Google Map app before starting. To know about toll paid, ask Rental Service before making a book.

How Many Days Are Best For A Road Trip?

No matter whether you want to go to Canberra or not, at least need two days drive. If you’re going to go to Canberra by self-drive from Sydney, it will take 4 hrs up about 281km. If, from Melbourne, you need about 8 hrs 660km. So that’s why I recommend you start your trip from Sydney.

But, I must first say that I have not been to every attraction. I just tried to recommend some more worthwhile attractions which may be familiar to you. And the advice itinerary I gave, you don’t have to do it all, because you can’t drive as long as I can, you can follow this route at your own pace. Finally, you must carefully consider your limited vacation time. There is beautiful scenery on this road, so enjoy this trip.

Best Attractions in Canberra & between Sydney Melbourne

This section will show you these attractions that you can fill in your trip plan and some places that make you have fun with children. So take walking around, and enjoy the natural, peaceful atmosphere. Also, you will find out these tourist attractions which don’t appear in most tourist groups.

  • Parliament House
  • Old Parliament House
  • National Library of Australia
  • National Museum of Australia
  • Australian War Memorial

Above these destinations, what’s the best route? I got two kinds of itineraries for you. But before starting the route review, one point must remind to you.

Don’t forget To rent A car!

You can go through these two websites and compare the car rental prices it’s DriveCarNow  and  RentalCars .

But why do you need to rent a car? Because Australia is a vast mainland with many beautiful attractions to add to your trip, self-driving cars are more convenient than joining a tour group. When you want to get to one destination, that’s pretty far, so you need to drive several hours for these two itineraries, separated by different types of vehicles.

2 Days Itinerary Sydney Melbourne Via Canberra Road Trip

If you just have two days, you can stay over in Canberra; some accommodations have the best reviews rate. Learn More>>

If you start from Sydney, I recommend staying in Canberra City Centre for the two-day drive trip. Then, check in to the University House-ANU because it’s in the city center, and just visit most typical attractions by walk.

If you start from Melbourne, I recommend booking a night at the University of Canberra Village , which is cheaper. Next, the day you can visit the city center, then head to Sydney.

So what about this itinerary detail?

Better you need to consider the fuel, so add this point to your plan. For the two days itinerary, the detail of the project is like this:

Canberra tourist park and new caravan site opens near epic.

Canberra Tourist Park

There are 73-caravan spaces at the recently opened Canberra Tourist Park. Photo: Supplied.

The new Canberra Tourist Park near EPIC in Canberra’s north opened today (22 July). The site includes a new 73-site caravan park, 154 rooms accommodating 408 guests and private accommodation for coach drivers.

Canberra Park manager David Grigg said the new site would complement EPIC as it is perfectly situated for people to visit national attractions, wineries, cafes and restaurants, being just 6 km from the city centre.

“The aim is to have a property as far as location goes that would actually bring people to Canberra, as opposed to them going through,” he said.

Kitchen facilities

The park can be accessed from the Federal Highway and is located at the Old Well Station Road intersection in Gungahlin. The park is within walking distance of the light-rail and the free Cultural Loop shuttle bus.

Drive through and back-in sites are all available at the Tourist Park while fire pit areas, modern camping facilities and a dump point are also on site.

Mr Grigg said this would be a step up in the level of caravan park offering, with high-end amenities and facilities, and sites large enough to take the longer rigs.

The opening of the Canberra Tourist Park brings the number of like sites in the ACT to four, alongside Canberra Park, Southside Village in Symonston and Alivio Tourist Park at O’Connor. There are three others just across the border.

Is it Pet Friendly?

Can you pitch a tent here instead of a caravan? Are there discounts if you stay 12 months or more at a powered site?

Wouldn’t take much to be better than EPIC.

Better looking camp kitchen than many that I’ve used.

I thought it was a prison. Very disappointing.

This was needed so much in Canberra. Well overdue.

Perfect for summernats

Looks fantastic. And what a sunset!

There’s no trees 😞😞😞

Is there a footpath between this campground and the tram?

No. But why would it need one? It’s not that close to a tram stop.

And for what it’s worth there is a footpath to the nearest bus stop on Aspinal Street.

56 minutes by bus to City. 30 minutes by walking to the tram, except there is no footpath.

The one at Symonston is an abomination. I’d be scared staying there

Although I often drive past it, I’ve never driven inside the gates. Why, what’s it like? If you can make a comment like that, you must know.

TOP-11 Moscow Parks to Visit

I have chosen the best 11 Moscow parks to visit and spend a beautiful time for you. Do not miss and choose one that you like the most – cycling, festivals, flowers, panoramic views and many other things are waiting for you!

Gorky Park (The Central Park of Culture and Leisure) – The main one of the Moscow Parks

In my opinion this park could be called the main park of the city. Why? Because of its huge territory, the central location and the amount of people visiting the park daily.  It was founded in 1928 and in 2011 it was totally reconstructed. Now it pleases visitors with modern objects and soft green lawns.

  • Oktybrskaya or Park Kultuty metro station, Krimsky Val, 9

The Gorky park is a the right choice for everyone! The youth will like a free WiFi, bicycles, skateboards and other rentals; the couples will enjoy spending time near the river, watching a sunset; parents will appreciate colorful playgrounds and a room for mother and child. Everyone can find something for themselves: from yoga classes  to watching movies in a cozy summer cinema, from dance classes to volleyball playground. Gorky Park is also the venue for all kinds of exhibitions, festivals, events for children and adults. During the winter there is one of the biggest skating rinks in the park.

Museon Art Park – A Second Gorky they say

“Museon” is located on the opposite side of Krimsky Val street. And right now some people believe that Gorky and Museon together is a one space sharing the same beauty.

  • Oktybrskaya or Park Kultuty metro station, Krimsky Val, 2

The Park of Arts was named this way because there is the largest composition of open-air sculptures in Russia. In its territory there are already more than 1000 unique exhibits: from monuments of the socialist realism era to various kinds of contemporary art. But this is not all the attractions of the park. In recent years, “Museon” has become an important cultural site of the city. The park regularly hold many different concerts, festivals, educational projects in the field of art and design. There is a Central House of the Artist, a comfortable summer cinema and other attractions on territory. Be sure to stroll pedestrian Crimean embankment, which looks like a modern park.

Neskuchny Garden – True Russian Nature is Here

Neskuchny garden is located on the right bank of the Moscow River. Today it is also seen as a part of the Gorky Park. This landscape park is one of the oldest in the city and is protected by the state. Its name was received from the Neskuchnoye Estate of  Prince Trubetskoi which is still located in the park.

  • Leninsky Prospekt metro station, Leninsky Prospect, 30

This park is famous mostly for its location close to the Gorky park. It is a quite place with true nature, lots of trees and squirrels and also ancient architecture. As in every park, there are sports and playgrounds, cafes and even a football field.

Zaryadye Park – 5 Steps Away From The Red Square

The area of this brand new park was opened only in September 2017 and located in the very heart of Moscow – right near the Red Square.

  • Open from 10AM to 10PM
  • Teatralnaya, Okhotnyi ryad, Ploschad Revolutsii

The park has 4 zones, each of them represent different parts of Russian landscapes. Above the river there is a floating bridge from where you get to see one of the best panoramic views on Moscow. Other attractions of the park are 5D cinema where you can take a flight above Moscow, few cafes and restaurants, pretty lakes with fishes and old preserved churches. In addition there is still being built a  philharmonic hall, covered with a huge dome and an Ice cage where the temperature will always stay below zero degrees.

When you are on the Red Square do not miss it!

All-Russia Exhibition Center (VDNKh) – The Soviet Style Moscow Park

Park VDNKh – one of the most famous parks in Moscow. This park is one of the sights of the city as it hasn’t changed much since the Soviet era.

  • VDNKh metro station, Prospect Mira, 119

The symbol of VDNKh is a fountain with 16 women symbolizing the friendship of the nations of the USSR. Around this fountain there are all the pavilions representing 16 republics. Now inside the pavilions you find various shops, cafes and exhibitions. If you go deep inside the park you will find a rocket Vostok and and an aircraft. What is funny the inside of the aircraft there is actually a photo exhibition. Near the northern entrance you there is a famous sculpture “Worker and Kolkhoz Woman”. It is extremely famous among Russians as all the movies by Mosfilm corporation used to start with the picture of this statue. But if you go further inside the park you will reach a very calm area. A lake is there, forest and birds singing. Since the park occupies a large area I suggest you to rent a bicycle.

Sokolniki Park – A Place For A Hunt Or For Leisure?

The park got its name because of the royal falconry, which took place there in the past when there was a dense forest. (Sokol means a falcon.) In 2011 it was significantly transformed: updated lawns, landscaped ponds and picnic areas, restored summer cinema and theater, a large rose garden, sports grounds, bicycle paths and other things.

  • Sokolniki metro station, Sokolnichesky Val, 1, p. 1

From the main entrance along the alley you can walk to the Sokolniki circle, where 8 alleys form 9 sectors, in each of them you will find trees of the same breed.  The park is famous for its rosary, as well as flower decoration. On the territory of the park there are concert halls, a library, amusement zone, dances zone and many many other attractions. In winter the park has a skating rink (a free of charge one) and ski runs. During the warm season you can rent a bicycle.

Tsaritsino Park – A Different World Inside Moscow

Here you can walk for hours, admiring the most beautiful nature and magnificent architecture.

  • Open from 6AM to 12AM
  • Tsaritsyno metro station, Dolsky, 1

The most amazing part of the park is the lake with a light and musical fountain. Every evening the fountain starts the show. Lights and music combined make you feel like you are not in Moscow but in a fairy tale. The park is also well equipped for sports lovers and healthy lifestyle. There are volleyball and basketball courts, a tennis court, sports facilities for acrobatics, bodybuilding equipment.

What I personally like about this park is the atmosphere. This place is actually far from the city center but I love going there anyway. Whenever I go there I feel like I left Moscow with all its hectic lifestyle. It is the place where I relax, enjoy myself or a company of my friends and feel kind of different. By the way totally suggested for a date!

Kolomenskoye Park – Combination Of Reserve and Architecture

The Kolomenskoye park is actually a Museum-Reserve. It is a former residence of Russian tsars and one of the most scenic places in Moscow.

  • May to September – open from 8AM to 12AM, October to April – from 8AM to 9PM
  • Kolomenskoye metro station, Andropov Ave, 39

Alike with Tsaritsino park Kolomenskoye park has its own special atmosphere with all the architecture, trees, ponds and even a river bank. The park regularly hosts various folk festivals and different fairs. In summer time you can play with kites or rent a bicycle and ride around the huge area of the park.

I love the view that you get on the city from one of the hills near the river. I love the apple trees alleys and the beautiful churches. It is also a bit far from the city center but yet worth going there. One of my best friends even celebrated her wedding there.

Aptekarsky Garden or Botanical garden of the Moscow State University – The Best Botanical Garden in The World

Aptekar in Russian language means a pharmacist so basically it is a pharmacist’s garden. It was founded in 1706 by Peter The Great for growing medicinal plants for the royal family. But later they moved it from under the walls of the Kremlin to the current location.

  • Open from 10AM to 8PM
  • Prospect Mira metro station, Prospekt Mira, 26

In the botanical garden there are no attractions and noisy crowds of tourists. The area of the garden is not as big as any other park in Moscow. And the entrance is not free. But this exactly what makes this park one of the most comfortable in the city. In the Aptekarsky garden they grow thousands of different plants, flowers and trees. Some of the trees are more than 300 years old. They held different festivals there: flowers festivals, sand and ice sculptures expositions.

For me it is one of the most beautiful parks not only in Moscow but in the world. I have never seen so many different flowers and plants anywhere else. And trust me I am a real park lover. And what is more the staff really takes care about every single tree or plant there, some of the trees have names and stories. I love it there and I think the price is really worth what you get.

Victory Park – A Park That Makes Us Remember The War

The park is located on the Poklonnaya Hill and it has one of the world’s largest memorial complexes dedicated to the World War II. The park was opened for the 50th anniversary of the Victory on May 9, 1995. It is also one of the main venues in the city for holding a variety of mass events.

  • Park Pobedy metro station, Brothers Fonchenko, 7

On the main avenue of the park there are with 1418 fountains – exactly as long as the war lasted. Fountains make five water terraces, symbolizing five years of military operations. And in the center of the park there is the Museum of the Great Patriotic War. If you are interested in the history of the war do not miss it. The Poklonnaya Hill is a part of the park and from the hill you get one of the best views on the city of Moscow. And I could say this is the best place for watching the fireworks during the mass celebrations. But be aware it gets too crowded then. As in most of the other big parks you can rent a bicycle or rollers there.

Izmailovsky Park – A Mix of a Big Forest and Attractions

Izmaylovsky Park occupies a huge green territory, making up a large part of the Izmailovo district. The park consists of two parts: Izmaylovsky Park of Culture and Rest and the forest park of Izmailovo. First part is full of attractions and restaurants while the second one is like a real forest with pine trees, birch groves, beautiful clearings and ponds.

  • Izmaylovskaya, Shosse Entuziastov or Partizanskaya metro stations, Izmaylovsky Park

It is easy to spend there a whole day. A large landscaped area and a lot of various entertainments for children and adults will help you not to get bored. An observation wheel, a boat station, children’s playgrounds, a dance floor, sports grounds, a skate park – all this is only a small part of the possible leisure activities. In the park there are bike paths and a rental services.

I don’t go there often to be honest. But the park is very very close whenever to a souvenir market on Partizanskaya metro station. And whenever the weather is nice and I have enough of free time I stroll through the alleys of the park and enjoy the nature. So if you are going to the souvenir market too and you have enough free time then do go to the park too.

Wandering around the grounds is like stepping back in time. The Novodevichy Cemetery is where many famous leaders of the Soviet Union are buried, such as Yeltsin and Khrushchev.

10. Pushkin Museum

Pushkin Museum

Despite its name, the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts actually has no connection at all to the famous poet other than that it was named in his honor after his death. A delight to visit, its extensive collection focuses on European art with masterpieces by Botticelli, Rembrandt, and van Gogh all featuring.

Sculptures, graphic art, paintings and more can be found in its beautiful galleries; various sections look at themes and epochs such as the Renaissance, the Dutch Golden Age, and Byzantine art.

Among the many highlights are the clownish characters which can be found in Cezanne’s Fastnacht (Mardi Gras) and the twirling ballerinas who look so elegant in Degas’ Blue Dancers. Picasso’s Young acrobat on a Ball is also well worth checking out for its interesting use of shapes and colors.

9. Christ The Savior Cathedral

Christ The Savior Cathedral

This gorgeous Russian Orthodox cathedral is located on the banks of the Moskva River, just a stone’s throw away from the Kremlin.

The church as it stands today was consecrated in 2000, as the original church that stood here was destroyed on the command of Josef Stalin in 1931 due to the anti-religious campaign.

With its delightful golden dome, spires and dazzling white facades, the Christ the Savior Cathedral is stunning. The interior is just as captivating to wander around, with its beautifully tiled floors and impressive altar.

8. Lenin Mausoleum

Lenin Mausoleum

Opened to the public in 1924, Lenin’s Mausoleum is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Moscow. The red granite structure is located at the heart of the city in Red Square.

Lenin’s embalmed body lies in a glass sarcophagus; it is a somewhat eerie experience walking past the former leader of the Soviet Union but is well worth doing as you understandably can’t do it anywhere else in the world.

5. Gorky Park

Gorky Park

Lying alongside the Moskva River, the huge Gorky Park is a lovely place to visit. Its extensive gardens are home to numerous cultural institutions and visitors should definitely check out the Garage Museum of Contemporary Art and while the eclectic exhibits may not always feature such incredible sights as a balloon-covered rider on a zebra; they certainly always succeed in pushing back the boundaries of art.

Pop-up exhibitions and festivals can be found from time to time in the park itself and there is an open-air theatre and numerous eateries alongside a plethora of leisure activities.

Whether it’s cycling, table tennis or yoga that you are after or beach volleyball and rowing, Gorky Park certainly has it. In winter, there is a huge ice rink for visitors to enjoy.

4. Bolshoi Theatre

Bolshoi Theatre

The Bolshoi Theatre is the main theater in the country. The amazing opera and ballet performances it has put on over the centuries go a long way in explaining Russia’s rich history of performing arts.

While the Bolshoi Ballet Company was established in 1776, the theater itself was opened in 1825. The glittering, six-tier auditorium is lavishly and decadently decorated; it is a fitting setting for the world-class performances that take place on its stage.

Spending a night watching a performance of such classics as The Nutcracker or Swan Lake at the Bolshoi Theatre is sure to be a memorable experience and the beauty all around you only adds to the sense of occasion.

3. Moscow Kremlin

Moscow Kremlin

This famously fortified complex is remarkably home to five palaces and four cathedrals and is the historic, political and spiritual center of the city. The Kremlin serves as the residence for the country’s president. It has been used as a fort, and this fact is made clear by its sheer size. The Kremlin’s outer walls were built in the late 1400s.

Under Ivan III, better known as Ivan the Great, the Kremlin became the center of a unified Russian state, and was extensively remodeled. Three of the Kremlin’s cathedrals date to his reign that lasted from 1462-1505. The Deposition Church and the Palace of Facets were also constructed during this time. The Ivan the Great Bell Tower was built in 1508. It is the tallest tower at the Kremlin with a height of 266 feet (81 meters).

Joseph Stalin removed many of the relics from the tsarist regimes. However, the Tsar Bell, the world’s largest bell, and the Tsar Cannon, the largest bombard by caliber in the world, are among the remaining items from that era. The Kremlin Armory is one of Moscow’s oldest museums as it was established more than 200 years ago. Its diamond collection is impressive.

The Kremlin’s gardens – Taynitsky, Grand Kremlin Public and Alexander – are beautiful. The Kremlin has also served as the religious center of the country, and there is a tremendous number of preserved churches and cathedrals here. The collections contained within the museums include more than 60,000 historical, cultural and artistic monuments. Those who enjoy the performing arts will want to consider attending a ballet or concert at the State Kremlin Palace. Completed in 1961, it is the only modern building in the Kremlin.

2. Red Square

Red Square

Lying at the heart of Moscow, Red Square is the most important and impressive square in the city. It is one of the most popular tourist attractions due to its wealth of historical sights and cultural landmarks.

Drenched in history, the huge square is home to incredible sights such as the Kremlin, St. Basil’s Cathedral and Lenin’s Mausoleum, among others. Consequently, it is not to be missed when in Moscow as it really is home to the city’s most stunning monuments.

It is here that many important moments in Russian history took place; the former marketplace has hosted everything from Tsar’s coronations and public ceremonies to rock concerts and Soviet military parades. Wandering around the massive square is a humbling experience and undoubtedly one of the highlights the city has to offer.

1. Saint Basil’s Cathedral

Saint Basil's Cathedral

Located in the impressive Red Square, St. Basil’s Cathedral is gorgeous; its delightful spires appear as if out of a fairytale. The most recognizable building in the country, the cathedral is very much a symbol of Russia. No visit to Moscow is complete without having taken in its unique and distinctive features.

Ivan the Terrible ordered the cathedral’s construction in the mid-16th century, and legend holds that Ivan put out the architect’s eyes so that he would be unable to build another cathedral more glorious than St. Basil’s. Designed to resemble the shape of a bonfire in full flame, the architecture is not only unique to the period in which it was built but to any subsequent period. For various reasons, both Napoleon and Stalin wanted to destroy the cathedral but fortunately did not succeed.

Known for its various colors, shapes and geometric patterns, St. Basil’s Cathedral houses nine different chapels that are all connected by a winding labyrinth of corridors and stairways. On the lower floor, St. Basil’s Chapel contains a silver casket bearing the body of St. Basil the Blessed.

Throughout the cathedral are many beautiful murals, frescoes, wooden icons and other art works and artifacts. Outside the cathedral is a lovely garden with the bronze Monument to Minin and Pozharsky, who rallied an all-volunteer Russian army against Polish invaders during a period of the late 16th century known as the Times of Troubles.
