Ranking All the PGA Tour Events
Ranking all pga tour events.
Don’t let your eyes deceive you. Just because the courses you see each week on telecasts of the PGA Tour look flawless on your big screen, they’ve all got issues and warts that are constantly being picked apart and complained about by the golfers making their living from shot to shot, and putt to putt, clubhouse to clubhouse.
We polled a handful of those players, as well as some of the nation’s most noted and knowledgeable golf writers and experts, and compiled a ranking of every event on the PGA Tour and the courses where they are played.
We took into consideration the location of the event, its history, its payouts, the likely quality of the fields that compete in the tournament and the courses for each tour stop. Those that paid higher purses may have been elevated over those with better courses, and vice versa, but there was a method to the madness of our results.
48. QBE Shootout
Location: Tiburon Golf Club, Naples, Florida
Established: 1989
Month played: December
Total purse (winner's share): $3.4 million ($442,000)*
*Note: All numbers and rankings are from the 2019 PGA Tour season.
Bottom Line: QBE Shootout
A three-day team event founded by Greg Norman and held on a course designed by the Great White Shark himself.
The teams play a scramble in the first round, greensomes in the second (each player hits a tee shot) and fourball in the final round.
It’s too much like a country club shootout to be important.
47. Corales Puntacana Resort and Club Championship
Location: Corales Puntacana Resort & Club, Punta Cana, Dominican Republic
Established: 2018
Month played: March
Total purse (winner's share): $3 million ($540,000)
Bottom Line: Corales Puntacana Resort and Club Championship
After being a Web.com Tour event for two years , this alternate event is played by the pro golfers who aren’t eligible for the Match Play, a nd it plays a distant second fiddle to the World Golf Championships (WGC) event.
The Dominican Republic is a fine golf destination, but the pros would rather be elsewhere.
46. Barbasol Championship
Location: Keene Trace Golf Club, Nicholasville, Kentucky
Established: 2015
Month played: July
Total purse (winner's share): $3.5 million ($630,000)
Bottom Line: Barbasol Championship
The Barbasol Championship was born in 2015 in Alabama as an alternate event for those tour players not making the trip across the pond to Britain for the Open Championship.
It moved to Kentucky in 2018, becoming the first PGA Tour event (excluding the PGA Championship in 1996, 2000 and 2014) in the state in 59 years.
45. Sanderson Farms Championship
Location: Country Club of Jackson, Jackson, Mississippi
Established: 1968
Month played: September
Total purse (winner's share): $4.4 million ($792,000)
Bottom Line: Sanderson Farms Championship
Played the same week as the WGC HSBC Champions, this alternate event can sometimes be an afterthought for those that follow the game.
The course, redesigned in 2007 by John Fought, is the draw. The drawback is the small purse and second-tier status.
44. Barracuda Championship (formerly Reno-Tahoe Open)
Location: Montreux Golf and Country Club, Reno, Nevada
Established: 1999
Bottom Line: Barracuda Championship (formerly Reno-Tahoe Open)
Two words — Stableford scoring — illustrate how this alternate event to the WGC event in Memphis the same week is so unique. This points scale encourages aggressive play, since the reward for scoring under par is higher than the penalty for scoring over par.
The event is played on one of the best courses in the West and is known as the Barracuda Championship after Barracuda Networks became the title sponsor in 2014.
43. Puerto Rico Open
Location: Coco Beach Golf & Country Club, Rio Grande, Puerto Rico
Established: 2008
Bottom Line: Puerto Rico Open
The Puerto Rico Open is played on the Tom Kite-designed Championship course.
It is the only PGA Tour event ever held in Puerto Rico and is low on this ranking because of its small purse and the fact that it’s an alternate event, played on the same dates as the WGC-Mexico Championship.
42. 3M Open
Location: TPC Twin Cities, Blaine, Minnesota
Established: 2019
Total purse (winner's share): $6.4 million ($1.152 million)
Bottom Line: 3M Open
The inaugural tournament in 2019 was the first official PGA Tour event in Minnesota since the 2009 PGA Championship, in which Y.E. Yang of South Korea defeated Tiger Woods at Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska.
The 3M Open takes the place of the 3M Championship, a PGA Tour Champions event, which was played in August 2018 for the final time.
41. Rocket Mortgage Classic
Location: Detroit Golf Club, Detroit, Michigan
Month played: June/July
Total purse (winner's share): $7.3 million ($1.314 million)
Bottom Line: Rocket Mortgage Classic
This tournament started in 2019 and is the first PGA Tour event ever to be held in the city of Detroit.
The area had not hosted a tour event since the Buick Open in 2009 at Warwick Hills in Grand Blanc.
The course, designed by Golden Age architect Donald Ross, is part of the draw for players.
40. Shriners Hospitals for Children Open
Location: TPC Summerlin, Las Vegas, Nevada
Established: 1983
Month played: November
Total purse (winner's share): $7 million ($1.260 million)
Bottom Line: Shriners Hospitals for Children Open
Few of the PGA Tour pros like this course, but many will play the tournament because of its charitable bent (Justin Timberlake has long been involved) and the fact that they get a week in Sin City along with the event.
39. CIMB Classic
Location: TPC Kuala Lumpur, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
Established: 2010
Month played: October
Total purse (winner's share): $7 million ($1.26 million)
Bottom Line: CIMB Classic
All you need to know about this tournament is Kuala Lumpur, which is Malaysian for "muddy confluence."
The limited-field event was replaced in the 2019–20 PGA Tour season by the Zozo Championship in Japan.
38: Zurich Classic of New Orleans
Location: TPC Louisiana, Avondale, Louisiana
Established: 1938
Month played: April
Total purse (winner's share): $7.3 million ($1.313 million)
Bottom Line: Zurich Classic of New Orleans
The event changed to a team (pairs) competition in 2017, but there’s little pizazz surrounding tournament week in the Big Easy.
The course features 103 bunkers, multiple mounds, and tough greens, all designed on a swamp by Pete Dye.
Golf pros consider the track to be one of the most unforgiving on the PGA Tour schedule.
37. Valspar Championship
Location: Innisbrook Resort and Golf Club’s Copperhead Course, Palm Harbor, Florida
Established: 2000
Total purse (winner's share): $6.7 million ($1.206 million)
Bottom Line: Valspar Championship
This was first played as an alternate event, then given status and its own weekend on the schedule.
But the Valspar Championship still is skipped over my many pros because of the events before it (formerly the Arnold Palmer Invitational and now the Players) and after it (WGC Match Play).
The course’s par-4 16th hole, the opener of the "Snake Pit," is one of the toughest on tour.
36. John Deere Classic
Location: TPC Deere Run, Silvis, Illinois
Established: 1971
Total purse (winner's share): $6 million ($1.08 million)
Bottom Line: John Deere Classic
This event is played every year in July in this Quad Cities community, and always the week before the British Open.
In order to help attract players, since 2008, the John Deere Classic has sponsored a charter flight that leaves the area on Sunday night and arrives in Britain the next morning.
35. Desert Classic
Location: PGA West Stadium Course/PGA West Course/La Quinta Country Club, La Quinta, California
Established: 1960
Month played: January
Total purse (winner's share): $5.9 million ($1.062 million)
Bottom Line: Desert Classic
This tournament is played on three different courses, and in a pro-am format.
The early-season date as the first event back on the mainland in the calendar year sometimes affects the field and other players.
Its hodgepodge keeps it from ranking higher.
34: Sony Open in Hawaii
Location: Waialae Country Club, Honolulu, Hawaii
Established: 1965
Bottom Line: Sony Open in Hawaii
Most players — meaning all those that didn’t win the year before but still have a hankering for the islands — begin their calendar seasons with this event (Fall Series, be darned).
The course often is panned for being too easy, but sometimes, these guys deserve a break, too.
33. The Honda Classic
Location: PGA National Resort Champion Course, Palm Beach Gardens, Florida
Established: 1972
Month played: February/March
Total purse (winner's share): $6.8 million ($1.224 million)
Bottom Line: The Honda Classic
The Honda Classic at PGA National is home to the infamous "Bear Trap," a trio of nearly unplayable holes that keep even the professional golfers honest and creates an "anybody-can-lose" mentality.
The 2019 event had six players atop the leaderboard with four holes to play.
32. Safeway Open
Location: Silverado Resort and Spa North Course, Napa, California
Established: 2007
Total purse (winner's share): $6.4 million ($1.152 million )
Bottom Line: Safeway Open
A staple of the Fall Series, the Safeway Open usually sports a less-than-stellar field, even with the Johnny Miller-designed (and partially owned) course and the appeal of wine country.
The event opens the PGA Tour schedule each year.
31. Valero Texas Open
Location: TPC San Antonio AT&T Oaks Course, San Antonio, Texas
Established: 1922
Month played: April
Total purse (winner's share): $7.5 million ($1.35 million)
Bottom Line: Valero Texas Open
The Valero Texas Open has plenty of history on tour, but all those good vibes, as well as its burgeoning purse and record-breaking charitable contributions, have taken a back seat in recent years because most of the pros really hate the Greg Norman-designed golf course.
It moved to the week before the Masters in 2019 to help draw a better field.
30. Hero World Challenge
Location: Albany, New Providence, Bahamas
Total purse (winner's share): $3.5 million ($1 million)
Bottom Line: Hero World Challenge
This event benefits the Tiger Woods Foundation and is hosted by the man himself, with just 18 players invited to participate and a guaranteed payout.
If you're one of the lucky players to be asked, you would be crazy to let down Tiger, right?
29. Mayakoba Golf Classic
Location: El Chameleon Golf Club, Playa del Carmen, Mexico
Total purse (winner's share): $7.2 million ($1.296 million)
Bottom Line: Mayakoba Golf Classic
There are a lot worse things than playing golf on the Mexican Riviera, and this event has become one of the Fall Series’ best because of its steady purse increases.
The draw of a week’s vacation in the sun and surf doesn't hurt either.
28. RSM Classic
Location: Sea Island Resort, Sea Island, Georgia
Bottom Line: RSM Classic
The RSM Classic is played on one of the best courses on tour and deserves a better placement on the schedule.
As it is, it’s the last full-field tournament on the Fall Series, and it’s a fun final run around the course before the doldrums of the holiday season.
27. AT&T Byron Nelson
Location: Trinity Forest Golf Club, Dallas, Texas
Established: 1944
Month played: May
Total purse (winner's share): $7.9 million ($1.422 million)
Bottom Line: AT&T Byron Nelson
The Byron Nelson used to be a player favorite when it was held at TPC Four Seasons in Las Colinas (Irving, Texas) because of the amenities the stop offered families.
The course there was not as popular as the resort, and in the 2017-18 season, the event moved to a new Coore/Crenshaw-designed track that was not player or fan friendly.
26: Wyndham Championship
Location: Sedgefield Country Club’s Ross Course, Greensboro, North Carolina
Month played: August
Total purse (winner's share): $6.2 million ($1.116 million)
Bottom Line: Wyndham Championship
The Wyndham Championship, played on a peerless course designed by Golden Age architect Donald Ross, represents the last chance for players to earn a spot in the FedEx Cup.
Here, in 1965, the legendary Sam Snead, less than two months shy of age 53, set PGA Tour standards for his eighth win at an event and became the oldest winner of a tournament.
Both records still stand.
25. Arnold Palmer Invitational
Location: Bay Hill Club and Lodge, Orlando, Florida
Established: 1966
Total purse (winner's share): $9.1 million ($1.602 million)
Bottom Line: Arnold Palmer Invitational
Arnold Palmer didn't start the Arnold Palmer Invitational, but he bought the resort and its two golf courses and placed his fingerprints on every corner of the property.
The event wouldn't be as popular as it is now if it wasn’t so associated with the King, but it’s still a fun course to watch and play golf on.
24. The CJ Cup at Nine Bridges
Location: Nine Bridges Golf Club, Jeju Island, South Korea
Established: 2017
Total purse (winner's share): $9.5 million ($1.710 million)
Bottom Line: The CJ Cup at Nine Bridges
The CJ Cup is set on the other side of the world, but the course, ranked among the top 50 ever built, is as flawless as it is tough.
Hall of Fame golfer Chi Chi Rodriguez once called the course the "Taj Mahal of golf" because every hole looks like a postcard.
23. Farmers Insurance Open
Location: Torrey Pines Golf Course (South Course), La Jolla, California
Established: 1952
Total purse (winner's share): $7.1 million ($1.278 million)
Bottom Line: Farmers Insurance Open
The first two days of the Farmers Insurance Open are split between the North and South Course, with the best scores at the cutline carded on the easier North.
There’s little middle ground between players about the South course. They either really like it or really hate it, but the views make for a great day of golf.
22. Travelers Championship
Location: TPC River Highlands, Cromwell, Connecticut
Month played: June
Bottom Line: Travelers Championship
The Travelers Championship is a favorite on tour and garnered the "Players Choice" award (voted on exclusively by PGA Tour members) in 2018 for the second straight season.
The award is based on players' experiences with tournament services, hospitality, player and family amenities, community support, attendance, golf course and other attributes.
21. Waste Management Phoenix Open
Location: TPC Scottsdale Stadium Course, Scottsdale, Arizona
Established: 1932
Month played: February
Bottom Line: Waste Management Phoenix Open
The TPC Scottsdale course is the home of the loudest hole in golf, the famed par-3 16th. Upward of 20,000 mostly intoxicated fans harshly judge shots hit both well and poorly.
Usually played on Super Bowl Sunday, the tournament still draws some 85,000 patrons for the final round.
20. RBC Heritage
Location: Harbour Town Golf Links, Hilton Head Island, South Carolina
Established: 1969
Total purse (winner's share): $6.9 million ($1.242 million)
Bottom Line: RBC Heritage
Known by golfers and fans as "That Tournament After the Masters," this event is perhaps the most underrated on tour.
The tournament beautifully fills the post-Masters space with a laid-back weekend in lush Hilton Head, a near-perfect destination for people trying to flee winter’s dying breath.
19. Wells Fargo Championship
Location: Quail Hollow Club, Charlotte, North Carolina
Established: 2003
Bottom Line: Wells Fargo Championship
The Wells Fargo Championship has a great pedigree, a great course (designed originally by George Cobb and renovated through the years by Arnold Palmer and Tom Fazio) and a great spot on the schedule.
The event also is known to have one of the tougher finishes as its 16th, 17th, and 18th holes, commonly known as the "Green Mile," often rank among the PGA Tour's toughest closing stretch.
18. RBC Canadian Open
Location: Various courses around the country (including Glen Abbey Golf Course, Oakville, Ontario, Canada, and the Hamilton Golf & Country Club, Hamilton, Ontario)
Established: 1904
Total purse (winner's share): $7.6 million ($1.368 Million)
Bottom Line: RBC Canadian Open
The only PGA Tour event held north of the border, the RBC Canadian Open is the third-oldest continuously running tournament on the tour, after The Open Championship and the U.S. Open.
A Canadian has not won the Canadian Open since Pat Fletcher in 1954.
17. Genesis Open
Location: Riviera Country Club, Pacific Palisades, California
Established: 1926
Total purse (winner's share): $7.4 million ($1.332 million)
Bottom Line: Genesis Open
One of the oldest tournaments on the tour is played on one of its most iconic courses, with the march up the 18th fairway at Riviera toward the clubhouse ranking as the best jaunt anywhere.
There are a handful of holes here, including the par-3 seventh, the short par-4 10th and the 18th that are some of the best ever designed.
16. AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am
Location: Pebble Beach Golf Links/Spyglass Hill Golf Course/Monterrey Peninsula Country Club, Pebble Beach, California
Established: 1937
Total purse (winner's share): $7.6 million ($1.368 million)
Bottom Line: AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am
Crooner and actor Bing Crosby founded the Pebble Beach Pro-Am as the "Crosby Clambake."
Played at two other top-drawer facilities, as well as the course considered among the top two or three in the nation, this event is highly regarded by players and fans.
Pebble Beach also has been the site of six U. S. Opens, in 1972, 1982, 1992, 2000, 2010 and 2019.
15. Sentry Tournament of Champions
Location: Plantation Course at Kapalua, Maui, Hawaii
Established: 1953
Total purse (winner's share): $6.5 million ($1.3 million)
Bottom Line: Sentry Tournament of Champions
You have to win a tournament in the previous season to be invited to play in this event.
It's in friggin' Hawaii and played on a course on which the golfers hit 400-plus yard drives downwind and downhill.
This is a nice event and sweet to be a part of.
14. Charles Schwab Challenge
Location: Colonial Country Club, Fort Worth, Texas
Established: 1946
Bottom Line: Charles Schwab Challenge
This event, also known as the Fort Worth Invitational, is perennially one of the best on tour, thanks to its traditional layout and the prestige carried by a win here.
Held each year at the venerable Colonial Country Club, the tournament is one of only five given "invitational" status by the PGA Tour, and consequently has a reduced field of approximately 125 players.
13. Memorial Tournament
Location: Muirfield Village Golf Club, Dublin, Ohio
Established: 1976
Month played: May/June
Total purse (winner's share): $9.1 million ($1.638 million)
Bottom Line: Memorial Tournament
Another of the invitational tournaments on tour, the Memorial is hosted by the legendary Jack Nicklaus on a course he designed and has tweaked regularly through the years.
Tiger Woods has won the event a record five times.
12. The Northern Trust
Location: Rotates between New York City and Boston areas (Liberty National Golf Club, Jersey City, New Jersey; TPC Boston, Norton, Massachusetts)
Established: 1967
Total purse (winner's share): $9.25 million ($1.665 million)
Bottom Line: The Northern Trust
The first FedEx Cup playoff event was held in 2019 at the some-players-like-it, some-players-don’t course across the Hudson from Manhattan that backs up to the Statue of Liberty.
The field for the Northern Trust, formerly known as The Barclays, is limited to the top 125 players in the end-of-season FedEx Cup standings.
The tour returned to New England and TPC Boston in 2020 and rotates between the NYC and Boston area.
11. BMW Championship
Location: Various (including Medinah Country Club’s Course No. 3, Medinah, Illinois; Olympia Fields Country Club North Course, Olympia Fields, Illinois; Caves Valley Golf Club, Owings Mill, Maryland)
Established: 1916
Bottom Line: BMW Championship
The BMW Championship is the penultimate event of the FedEx Cup playoffs and is limited to the top 70 golfers in the standing after the prior week’s Northern Trust.
Born as the Western Open in 1899, this tournament was played at Medinah for the fourth time in 2019 but first since 1966.
It will be played at the Caves Valley Golf Club in Owings Mills, Maryland, in 2021 and the Wilmington Country Club in Wilmington, Delaware, in 2022.
10. Tour Championship
Location: East Lake Golf Club, Atlanta, Georgia
Established: 1987
Bottom Line: Tour Championship
The top 30 players in the FedEx Cup standings get a chance to test their skills on this Donald Ross-designed, Rees Jones-renovated track for the event’s purse and a $15 million bonus.
The golf course hosted its first Tour Championship in 1998 and became the tournament’s permanent home in 2005.
9. World Golf Championships-HSBC Champions
Location: Sheshan International Golf Club, Shanghai, China
Established: 2005
Total purse (winner's share): $10 million ($1.7 million)
Bottom Line: World Golf Championships-HSBC Champions
Every WGC event is desirable and important for professional golfers because of the limited fields, the guaranteed payday and the prestige of being among the top players in the game.
And because the event is in China, and everyone wants the golf market in that country to grow, winning here carries a lot of clout.
8. World Golf Championships-Mexico Championship
Location: Club de Golf Chapultepec, Mexico City, Mexico
Total purse (winner's share): $10.25 million ($1.745 million)
Bottom Line: World Golf Championships-Mexico Championship
This event moved to Mexico a few years ago from Doral in Miami.
It ranks high for the quirky, and relatively short, course design, and playing at elevation makes the pros’ shots even more impressive.
The fact that it’s a limited, elite field and has a large, guaranteed purse also works to its advantage.
7. World Golf Championships-FedEx St. Jude Invitational
Location: TPC Southwind, Memphis, Tennessee
Bottom Line: World Golf Championships-FedEx St. Jude Invitational
This tournament took over as a WGC event for the first time in the 2018-19 season (taking the place of the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational), and it added instant prestige after being just a run-of-the-mill event for years.
It’s ranked so highly because of its huge purse and prestigious field.
6. World Golf Championships-Dell Technologies Match Play
Location: Austin Country Club, Austin, Texas
Bottom Line: World Golf Championships-Dell Technologies Match Play
What’s not to like about spending a week in Austin, a guaranteed payday, and at least three matches in pool play before elimination.
The top 64 players in the world qualify for this event, which is played at one of the nation’s most underrated golf courses.
A winner every year.
5. The Players Championship
Location: TPC Sawgrass Stadium Course, Ponte Verde Beach, Florida
Established: 1974
Total purse (winner's share): $12.5 million ($2.25 million)
Bottom Line: The Players Championship
This devious Pete and Alice Dye-designed course was fashioned to be difficult for the best golfers in the world and takes its pound of flesh from whoever tees it up here.
It is home of perhaps the most famous golf hole in the world, the devilishly short par-3 17th with its island green.
This event, which considers itself the "Fifth Major," carries the largest purse outside the major tournaments.
4. PGA Championship
Location: Bethpage State Park Golf Club’s Black Course, Bethpage, New York
Month played: May (formerly August)
Total purse (winner's share): $11 million ($1.98 million)
Bottom Line: PGA Championship
The fourth-ranked major for this list got a boost in the 2018-19 season when it was played at the incomparable Black Course, one of the world’s sternest challenges and likely one of the best courses in the U.S. that anyone can play.
The tournament’s move to May helped remove the afterthought status it’s suffered as compared to the other three majors.
3. U.S. Open
Location: Pebble Beach Golf Links, Pebble Beach, California
Established: 1895
Total purse (winner's share): $12 million ($2.16 million)
Bottom Line: U.S. Open
The course for America’s national championship varies every year. But one thing never changes — it's always a great one.
In 2019, the tournament returned to Pebble Beach, the course many consider to be the finest in the nation. The fabled course on the Monterey Peninsula celebrated its centennial that year.
It had hosted five previous U.S. Opens, four U.S. Amateurs and two U.S. Women’s Amateur Championships.
2. The Open Championship
Location: Royal Portrush Golf Club’s Dunluce Links, Antrim, Northern Ireland
Established: 1860
Total purse (winner's share): $10.5 million ($1.89 million)
Bottom Line: The Open Championship
The British Open is the biggest golf tournament in the world to all but the Americans because of its history and prestige and the demands it places on the best golfers.
The event returned to Northern Ireland in 2019 for the first time since 1951, when it became the first club outside of the mainland United Kingdom to host the tournament.
1. The Masters Tournament
Location: Augusta National Golf Club, Augusta, Georgia
Established: 1934
Total purse (winner's share): $11 million ($1.980 million) *2018 purse
Bottom Line: The Masters Tournament
The Masters is far and away the best tournament on tour each year just because it's always played at the same course — and that course is one of the best in the world — and because of all the perks that come with a win.
It’s an honor to even be invited to play at Augusta, and every round is cherished by the golfers and must-see television for fans.

2024 season
Our new ranking of every PGA Tour course—from best to worst
There are plenty of reasons why a course is selected to host a PGA Tour event beyond its architectural merits. Of course, the layout must sufficiently test the best players in the world, but the regional market, logistics and history all play important roles in landing a tour event as well.
That said, it’s no secret the tour travels to many of our country’s finest courses. Of the 32 events played in the United States during the 2024 PGA Tour season, 16 are currently ranked on at least one of Golf Digest's national rankings— America's 100 Greatest , Second 100 Greatest and 100 Greatest Public .
In this guide, we rank the 32 U.S. courses that will host a PGA Tour event or major championship this season, based on the scores from our 1,800 course-ranking panelists. (This list only includes events played in the U.S.—there are five international events scheduled this season. Also note that we only rank the primary course at multi-course events such as Torrey Pines and Pebble Beach.)
More From Golf Digest
You might be surprised how the architectural merits of a layout don’t always align with the prestige of the tour event played there. Our panelists evaluate courses on seven scoring criteria, ranging from Shot Options and Layout Variety to Conditioning and Aesthetics .
Scroll on for the complete ranking, and be sure to click through to each individual course page for bonus photography and reviews from our course panelists. We also encourage you to leave your own ratings on the courses you’ve played … so you can make your case for why a course should be higher or lower on our rankings.
1. Augusta National Golf Club (Masters Tournament)
Augusta, GA
- 100 Greatest
- Best In State
There will be no surprise with the No. 1 course on this list. Augusta National has been ranked first, second or third on our biennial America's 100 Greatest Courses ranking in each edition. The club made a significant change in the fall of 2022, lengthening the par-5 13th hole by about 30 yards . No club has tinkered with its golf course as often or as effectively over the decades as has Augusta National Golf Club, mainly to keep it competitive for the annual Masters Tournament, an event it has conducted since 1934, with time off during WWII. All that tinkering has resulted in an amalgamation of design ideas, with a routing by Alister Mackenzie and Bobby Jones, some Perry Maxwell greens, some Trent Jones water hazards, some Jack Nicklaus mounds and swales and, most recently, extensive rebunkering and tree planting by Tom Fazio. The tinkering continued in the summer of 2018 as the club lengthened the par-4 fifth by extending its back tee on newly acquired land. Soon to come, the lengthening of the famed par-5 13th.

10. Kapalua: Plantation (The Sentry)
Kapalua: Plantation
Lahaina, hi.
From Golf Digest Architecture Editor emeritus Ron Whitten: Most golf fans are familiar with Kapalua Golf Club’s Plantation Course, home of the PGA Tour's opening event each year. Located on the north shore of the Hawaiian island of Maui, the Plantation was built from open, windswept pineapple fields on the pronounced slope of a volcano and is irrigated by sprinklers pressured solely by gravity. As the first design collaboration by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw, it unveiled their joint admiration for old-style courses. The blind drive on the fourth, the cut-the-corner drives on the fifth and sixth are all based on tee shots found at National Golf Links. So, too, are its punchbowl green and strings of diagonal bunkers. It's also a massive course, built on a huge scale, Coore says, to accommodate the wind and the slope and the fact that it gets mostly resort play.

Arnold Palmer's Bay Hill Club & Lodge: Challenger/Champion
Orlando, fl.
From Golf Digest Architecture Editor emeritus Ron Whitten: I've always been fascinated by the design of Bay Hill, Arnold Palmer's home course for over 45 years (although Tiger Woods owns it, competitively-speaking, as he's won there eight times.) For one thing, it's rather hilly, a rarity in Florida (although not in the Orlando market) and dotted with sinkhole ponds incorporated in the design in dramatic ways.
I always thought the wrap-around-a-lake par-5 sixth was Dick Wilson's version of Robert Trent Jones's decade-older 13th at The Dunes Club at Myrtle Beach. Each of the two rivals had claimed the other was always stealing his ideas. But the hole I like best at Bay Hill is the par-4 eighth, a lovely dogleg-right with a diagonal green perched above a small circular pond. OK, I admit that it reminds me of the sixth at Hazeltine National, another Trent Jones product, but I don't think Wilson picked Trent's pocket on this one, as both courses were built about the same time, in the early 1960s.

22. Innisbrook Resort: Copperhead (Valspar Championship)
Innisbrook Resort: Copperhead
Palm harbor, fl, 23. pga national resort & spa: champion (cognizant classic in the palm beaches).
PGA National Resort: Champion
Palm beach gardens, fl.
One of five courses at PGA National, the Champion Course has hosted the Honda Classic since 2007. (The event dates back to 1972, though with Honda pulling out as a tournament sponsor, the event is in question going forward.) Originally designed by Tom and George Fazio for tournament play, Jack Nicklaus redesigned the course in 2014, creating the infamous three-hole stretch aptly named "The Bear Trap." Routinely one of the toughest courses on tour, The Champion is a true ball-striking test that plays a lot differently than most courses, where winning scores push over 20 under par.

Everything You Need To Know About The Eight PGA Tour Signature Events In 2024
The group of elevated tournaments on the PGA Tour features an increase in prize money and FedEx Cup points - but what are they and when are they in 2024?
- Sign up to Golf Monthly Newsletter Newsletter
PGA Tour 'Signature Events' are now an instrumental feature on the circuit's calendar in 2024 after a year of ' Designated Events ' in 2022-23.
The eight tournaments - which don't include the Majors , playoff events and Players Championship - feature smaller fields but increased prize purses and more FedEx Cup points (700 to the winner of each).
Three of the events - hosted by legends of the game - will feature a 36-hole cut and 20% of the total prize purse awarded to the winner while the remaining tournaments are no-cut competitions with the usual 18% prize handed to the champion.
The top-50 members of the reshuffled FedEx Cup standings from the 2022-23 season automatically qualified for all Signature Events this year, while 'The Next 10' - which includes the top-10 players on the 2024 FedExCup point list, not otherwise exempt via a higher priority category - will also receive a start.
For the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and The Genesis Invitational, the Next 10 referred to those players who finished between 51-60 on the final 2022-23 FedExCup Fall points list.
To ensure every PGA Tour member has a chance of making it, there is another exemption category called the 'Swing 5.' Those who secure the highest number of FedEx Cup points in between Signature Events will book a tee time at the upcoming tournament. The winner of any PGA Tour event is also eligible for the remaining 'Signature' tournaments in 2024.
Without further ado, let's take a look at the eight Signature Events on the PGA Tour calendar in 2024.

What Are The Eight Signature Events On The PGA Tour In 2024?
The sentry (january 4-7).
Chris Kirk is the 2024 Sentry champion
Formerly known as The Sentry Tournament of Champions, the more concisely-named event kicked off the 2024 PGA Tour season at the monster-drive-enabling Kapalua Plantation Course in Hawaii.
As the first PGA Tour competition of 2024, The Sentry is the only Signature Event which did not include either qualifiers from The Next 10 or The Swing 5. Only PGA Tour winners from 2023 and the top-50 members from the 2022-23 FedExCup standings teed it up.
Chris Kirk won the 2024 running after an incredible overall score of 29-under par - one shot in front of Sahith Theegala and two ahead of Jordan Spieth .
AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am (February 1-4)
Wyndham Clark holds up the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am trophy in 2024
The biggest Pro-Am golf tournament in the world took place at two iconic courses in early February - Pebble Beach Golf Links and Spyglass Hill Golf Course .
Despite being eagerly anticipated as arguably the first showpiece event of the season, several days of stormy weather majorly disrupted the tournament and caused it to be shortened to 54 holes.
Wyndham Clark was crowned the 2024 champion, though, thanks to a simply stunning 12-under-par effort on Saturday - the final day of competition.
The Genesis Invitational (February 15-18)
Only the WM Phoenix Open separated the second and third Signature Events on the PGA Tour in 2024 during an undoubtedly exciting stretch of golf.
Tiger Woods hosted the Genesis Invitational at Riviera Country Club shortly after Valentine's Day, with the 15-time Major champion briefly making hearts flutter in what was his first PGA Tour start of the year.
However, he was forced to withdraw due to illness during round two and was not able to be in attendance as former Masters champion Hideki Matsuyama produced a masterful Sunday performance to take home the title.
Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard (March 7-10)
The Arnold Palmer Invitational precedes The Players Championship and often features a Major-like field in terms of its strength. Being that it is also now a Signature Event, too, many of the world's top-70 are involved on a Bay Hill course that can cause even the strongest player to crumble somewhat.
The event in Florida sees the winner receive a red cardigan sweater, in memory of Arnold Palmer - a tradition that began with the 2017 tournament after Palmer's death in 2016.
It's 2024 edition was won by Scottie Scheffler after the American romped to the title on 15-under, five shots clear of runner up, Wyndham Clark.
RBC Heritage (April 18-21)
Perhaps unlucky in terms of its timing, the RBC Heritage takes place days after The Masters finishes in mid-April at the wonderfully-picturesque Harbour Town Golf Links on the eastern coast of the United States.
Not that the event doesn't mean almost as much as The Masters to some. 2023 winner Matt Fitzpatrick claimed his first regular PGA Tour title in South Carolina at a location his family had been going on holiday to since he was six years old.
Wells Fargo Championship (May 9-12)
2024 will mark the final Wells Fargo Championship, possibly ever, after the financial-services company announced it would not be renewing its sponsorship of the tournament.
Wyndham Clark won at Quail Hollow in 2023, and he will surely be back to see if he can defend his crown at the world-famous course.
The Memorial Tournament presented by Workday (June 6-9)
The ideal warm-up to the U.S Open at Pinehurst No.2 in 2024, the Memorial Tournament is a brutal test for players - indicated by Viktor Hovland 's winning score of seven-under last year. He out-lasted Denny McCarthy in a playoff at Muirfield Village Golf Club in 2023 before ultimately claiming the FedEx Cup in August.
This year's Memorial Tournament takes place smack bang in the middle of a thrilling stretch of golf and is the penultimate Signature Event of the year.
Travelers Championship (July 20-23)
The final Signature Event of the season is due to take place one week after the U.S Open at TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, Connecticut. Keegan Bradley took home the title and a check for $4 million after winning by three shots at the same tournament in 2023.
As the FedEx Cup playoffs come into view, this will be the players' last chance to make serious moves towards the top-10 and give themselves a better chance of making some serious money.

How to livestream PGA Tour golf: Your options, explained (plus 2024 schedule)
By Meredith Gordon
March 6, 2024 / 3:18 PM EST / Essentials
CBS Essentials is created independently of the CBS News editorial staff. We may receive commissions from some links to products on this page. Promotions are subject to availability and retailer terms.
The 2024 PGA Tour is in full bloom, as the top male golfers compete on some of the world's most storied golf courses. Early in the season, Scottie Scheffler, Xander Schauffele and Rory McIlroy have already established themselves at the top of the leaderboard , with Jon Rahm and Viktor Hovland nipping at their cleats.
Figuring out how to watch and stream each tournament can prove as difficult as trying to outshoot Scheffler. While we can't help you with your golf game, we can take the guesswork out of finding out how to watch every golf tournament on the 2024 PGA Tour.
What network carries the 2024 PGA Tour
The 2024 PGA Tour will broadcast live on Golf Channel, CBS, NBC and ESPN. The PGA Tour will stream on ESPN+ and the live TV streaming services listed below. Not every channel will air every event.
CBS broadcasts an average of 20 weekend events per PGA Tour season, while NBC broadcasts weekend coverage of the PGA Tour for an average of 10 events each season. Golf Channel broadcasts early-round and morning weekend coverage of all PGA Tour events -- as well as weekend events not covered on broadcast TV. Golf Channel also carries primetime replays of all PGA Tour events.
The final three tournaments of the FedEx Cup playoffs alternate each year between CBS and NBC.
How to watch the 2024 PGA Tour without cable
If you don't have a cable subscription, or your cable coverage doesn't include NBC or CBS, ESPN+ streams every PGA Tour event of the 2024 season. You can also stream NBC-aired tournaments on Peacock and CBS-aired tournaments on Paramount+, or catch the live feed of network coverage through one of the live TV streaming platforms featured below.
Watch the PGA Tour free with Fubo
You can also catch all network-aired PGA Tour events (both CBS and NBC), plus Golf Channel-aired events, on Fubo . Fubo is a sports-centric streaming service that offers access to every PGA Tour event in 2024, every network-aired NBA and MLB game and almost every NFL game next season. Packages include CBS, CBS Sports Network, Fox, NBC, ESPN, ESPN2, FS1, FS2, NFL Network and more, so you'll be able to watch more than just PGA Tour golf this season, all without a cable subscription.
Sports fans will want to consider adding on the $7.99 per month Fubo Extra package, which includes MLB Network, NBA TV, NHL Network, Tennis Channel, SEC Network and more channels. Or upgrade to the Fubo Elite tier and get all the Fubo Extra channels, plus the ability to stream in 4K.
To watch the 2024 PGA Tour without cable, start a seven-day free trial of Fubo. You can begin watching immediately on your TV, phone, tablet or computer. Fubo's Pro Tier is priced at $80 per month after your free seven-day trial while Fubo Elite is $90, though the streamer is currently offering $20 off your first month of service on any tier.
Top features of Fubo Pro Tier:
- There are no contracts with Fubo -- you can cancel at any time.
- The Pro tier has 185 channels, including the Golf Channel.
- The Fubo lookback feature allows you to watch sporting events up to 72 hours after they air live.
- Fubo includes all the channels you'll need to watch college and pro football, including CBS (not available through Sling TV).
- All tiers come with 1,000 hours of cloud-based DVR recording.
- Stream on your TV, phone, and other devices.
Stream CBS-aired PGA Tour events on Paramount+
If you don't have a cable TV package that includes CBS, one of the easiest ways to catch all PGA Tour events broadcast on CBS is through a subscription to Paramount+ with Showtime. The streamer offers access to PGA golf tournaments, plus all NFL games locally and nationally televised on CBS. In addition, you can watch top-tier soccer like the Champions League live and SEC college football games as well, plus popular shows such as "Survivor" and "NCIS."
A subscription to Paramount + with Showtime is $11.99 per month after a seven-day free trial. You won't be able to catch live PGA Golf with a Paramount+ Essential subscription, but you can catch live CBS-aired NFL games with the Paramount+ lower tier.
Note: CBS Essentials and Paramount+ are both subsidiaries of Paramount.
Start watching Paramount+ free on Amazon Prime Video
Paramount+ content, including live sports, is available to stream on Amazon Prime via a Paramount+ with Showtime on Prime Video add-on subscription. Prime Video also carries some of the best sports docs, including "Kelce," which documents Philadelphia Eagles star Jason Kelce's (assumed) last season in the league.
Amazon is offering a seven-day free trial of Paramount+ with Showtime . Tap the button below to start your trial and start streaming now for free. After the free trial period ends, a subscription to the Paramount+ with Showtime tier is $11.99 per month.
Watch every 2024 PGA Tour event with Hulu+ Live TV
You can watch the 2024 PGA Tour, plus NFL football in 2024 including the NFL Network, with Hulu + Live TV . The bundle features access to 90 channels, including both NBC and CBS. Unlimited DVR storage is also included. Watch every tournament on each network with Hulu + Live TV, plus catch live 2024 NFL preseason games, exclusive live regular season games, popular studio shows (including NFL Total Access and the Emmy-nominated show Good Morning Football) and lots more.
Hulu + Live TV comes bundled with ESPN+ and Disney+ for $77 monthly.
Stream the 2024 PGA Tour on Sling TV for half price
If you don't have cable TV that includes NBC and CBS, one of the most cost-effective ways to stream live PGA golf this year is through a subscription to Sling TV . The streamer also offers access to the NFL Network, local NBC, Fox and ABC affiliates (where available) and ESPN with its Orange + Blue Tier plan. Also worth noting: Sling TV comes with 50 hours of cloud-based DVR recording space included, perfect for recording all the season's top golf tournaments.
Sling TV does not carry CBS-aired content. To use your Sling TV subscription to watch the entire 2024 PGA Tour, you can upgrade your subscription to get the Golf Channel, which carries nearly every 2024 PGA Tour tournament.
The Orange + Blue Tier plan normally costs $60 per month, but the streamer is currently offering a 50% off promotion for your first month, so you'll pay just $30. You can add the Golf Channel, NBA TV, NHL Network, NFL RedZone, MLB Network, Tennis Channel and more sports-oriented channels (25 in total) via the Sling TV Sports Extra add-on. These channels will cost you an additional $15 per month. You can learn more by tapping the button below.
Top features of Sling TV Orange + Blue tier:
- There are 46 channels to watch in total, including local NBC, Fox and ABC affiliates (where available).
- You get access to most local NFL games and nationally broadcast games at the lowest price.
- All subscription tiers include 50 hours of cloud-based DVR storage.
Watch NBC-aired 2024 PGA Tour events on Peacock
Peacock offers its subscribers live-streaming access to PGA Tour events that air on NBC, while also giving access to NFL games airing on NBC and Peacock-exclusive NFL games next season. The streaming service has plenty more live sports to offer, including Big Ten football, Premier League soccer and WWE wrestling (including formerly PPV-only events such as Wrestlemania). There are 80,000 hours worth of recorded content to watch as well, including hit movies and TV series such as "The Office" and "Parks and Recreation."
A Peacock subscription costs $6 per month. An annual plan is available for $60 per year. You can cancel anytime.
Top features of Peacock:
- If you want to watch the entire 2024 PGA Tour, there are better choices featured in this article, giving you more access to more PGA golf this year.
- Peacock features plenty of current and classic NBC and Bravo TV shows.
Stream every 2024 PGA Tour event on ESPN+
ESPN+ is ESPN's subscription streaming platform , which offers exclusive live events, original studio shows and top-tier series that aren't accessible on the ESPN networks. ESPN+ subscribers may purchase UFC PPV events and access the platform's vast archive of on-demand content, including the entire 30 For 30 catalog, game replays and select ESPN films.
It is important to note that ESPN+ does not include access to the ESPN network. It is a separate sports-centric service, with separate sports programming.

AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Defending Masters champion Jon Rahm hoped his move to leave the PGA Tour for the Saudi-backed LIV Golf League in December would expedite the process of bringing the sport back together.
"I understood my position, yes. And I understood that it could be a step toward some kind of an agreement," Rahm said Tuesday at Augusta National. "Unfortunately, it's not up to me."
While the sport remains split and Rahm returns to the Masters with a "Legion XII" LIV team logo across his chest, the Spaniard has remained steadfast in his belief that he made the right decision in switching tours.
"I still did what I thought was best for myself," Rahm said. "I've had a lot of fun playing in those events. It's been fun to be part of a team."
Since the advent of LIV in 2021, Rahm had been adamant and vocal about his distaste for the 54-hole format and repeatedly declared his loyalty to the PGA Tour. His departure, which was facilitated by a deal reported to be more than $350 million, was a shock to the golf world.
So far, Rahm has finished inside the top 10 at all five LIV events this season but has yet to win. The five tournaments are fewer than Rahm has played in previous years prior to the Masters, but the two-time major winner said it has not affected his preparation.
"If anything, I feel physically better than I did last year," Rahm said. "I do feel fresh and ready for it."
To hear Rahm talk about it, the different schedule is not as top of mind as missing out on some of his favorite PGA Tour events. The Scottsdale resident said Tuesday that he had to drive past the Stadium Course at TPC Scottsdale numerous times, seeing the stands and thinking of the fact that he wouldn't be playing in this year's Waste Management Open.
"Not being at Palm Springs, Torrey, Phoenix and L.A. wasn't the easiest," Rahm said. "I miss being out there, not only because I won but because I love it. ... I still love the PGA Tour and I still hope that at some point I can compete there again."
Even though this entire process has highlighted how much power he does not have in influencing the future of the sport, Rahm still longs for a reunited golf ecosystem. Still, he said he has embraced the team aspect of LIV, referring to it as one of the driving reasons for why there was appeal to leaving the PGA Tour.
While Rahm reiterated that the competition, pressure and level of golf has been the same for him on LIV even though the fields are smaller, he also still feels conflicted about the format. At LIV's Miami event, Rahm expressed his desire for LIV to eventually move to 72-hole tournaments, and he has doubled down on the notion .
"When I start the tournament, I don't think about how it's three rounds," Rahm said Tuesday. "That being said, four rounds is what I think favors a better winner and a better tournament."
A year after his historic win, Rahm further highlighted what kind of impact the Masters victory had on his life, where everything from his schedule to what league he played for changed once he put on the green jacket.
"It wasn't just the Masters. The fact that I was exempt for all majors for five years, that was a big factor," Rahm said. "If I didn't have as big of a year last year, I don't think I could say convincingly that I would have left [for LIV]."
When asked how he felt his legacy might change following not just his Masters win but his departure to LIV, Rahm didn't flinch.
"Will it change? Yeah. It's a bit of a detour on my path," Rahm said. "But change can be better."

2024 Masters odds, picks, golf predictions: Tiger Woods projection by proven model that's hit last two winners
Tiger woods, an 82-time pga tour champion, is expected to be part of the 2024 masters field at augusta national golf club.
FedEx Cup champion Viktor Hovland is looking to turn around his season when he tees off in Round 1 of the 2024 Masters on Thursday at Augusta National Golf Club. Last year, Hovland won two of the three FedEx Cup playoff events, a feat only Tiger Woods, Dustin Johnson and Patrick Cantlay had done previously, and had nine top-10s. However, he has yet to place better than 19th this year. Hovland has infamously never won a major despite being a six-time tour winner. He's at 22-1, according to the latest 2024 Masters odds, which gives him the 10th-lowest odds overall.
Among fellow non-major winners, Hovland trails just Xander Schauffele (18-1) and Will Zalatoris (20-1). Scottie Scheffler leads all 2024 Masters golfers at 13-4, followed by Rory McIlroy at 10-1. Before locking in your 2024 Masters picks or Tiger Woods props, be sure to see the golf predictions and projected leaderboard from the proven computer model at SportsLine .
SportsLine's proprietary model, built by DFS pro Mike McClure, has been red-hot since the PGA Tour resumed in June 2020. In fact, the model is up nearly $9,500 on its best bets since the restart, nailing tournament after tournament.
McClure's model predicted Scottie Scheffler would finish on top of the leaderboard at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and The Players Championship this season. McClure also included Hideki Matsuyama in his best bets to win the 2024 Genesis Invitational. That bet hit at +9000, and for the entire tournament, McClure's best bets returned nearly $1,000.
The model also predicted Jon Rahm would be victorious at the 2023 Sentry Tournament of Champions and The American Express. At the 2023 Masters, the model was all over Rahm's second career major victory heading into the weekend. Rahm was two strokes off the lead heading into the third round, but the model still projected him as the winner. It was the second straight Masters win for the model, which also nailed Scheffler winning in 2022.
In addition, McClure's best bets included Nick Taylor (70-1) winning the 2023 RBC Canadian Open, Jason Day (17-1) winning outright at the 2023 AT&T Byron Nelson, and Rickie Fowler (14-1) finishing on top of the leaderboard at the 2023 Rocket Mortgage Classic.
This same model has also nailed a whopping 10 majors entering the weekend. Anyone who has followed it has seen massive returns.
Now that the Masters 2024 field is set, SportsLine simulated the tournament 10,000 times, and the results were surprising. Head to SportsLine now to see the projected leaderboard.
Top 2024 Masters predictions
One major surprise the model is calling for at the 2024 Masters: Patrick Cantlay, a 28-1 longshot, makes a strong run at the title. He's a target for anyone looking for a huge payday. Cantlay has flirted with a green jacket, as he was atop the leaderboard in 2019 with just three holes to go before succumbing to Woods' surge. Last year, Cantlay was in fourth place entering the final round before tailing off. Being near the tops of leaderboards has become commonplace for Cantlay. Since 2019, only the trio of McIlroy, Jon Rahm and Scheffler have more PGA Tour victories than Cantlay's seven.
Cantlay is coming off a year in which he ranked in the top five in total driving, strokes gained: total, and scoring average (actual). He's not off to as strong of a start this year, but he's still elite at breaking par, as he ranks 19th on tour in birdie average (4.52). Getting in the red is essential to Augusta success, with the last six winners all reaching at least 10-under-par. Cantlay is a proven winner who is No. 7 in World Rankings, yet he's tied for 13th in terms of lowest Masters odds, making him a long shot to keep in mind with Masters 2024 bets.
The model has also examined where Tiger Woods finishes. Woods has a chance to make history this week at Augusta National. With a strong showing at the 2024 Masters, Woods can set a record by making his 24th consecutive cut at Augusta. He's tied with Gary Player and Fred Couples for the most consecutive made cuts at the Masters with 23. With a win at the 2024 Masters, Woods will tie Jack Nicklaus for most Masters victories (six).
Woods became the youngest winner in Masters history at 21 years and 104 days old in 1997, a record that still stands today. His 12-stroke victory over Tom Kite in 1997 also remains the largest margin of victory in Masters history. However, Woods has failed to secure a top-20 finish in a major championship since finishing on top of the leaderboard at the Masters in 2019. Woods is a longshot to win the Masters 2024 according to oddsmakers, but his success at Augusta National and extensive knowledge of the course could be major X-factors. The model just locked in its Tiger Woods Masters picks here .
How to make 2024 Masters picks
The model is also targeting six golfers with Masters odds of 20-1 or longer to make a strong run at the title. Anyone who backs these longshots could hit it big. You can only see the model's PGA picks here .
Who will win the 2024 Masters, which longshots will stun the golfing world, and where will Tiger Woods finish? The nine best bets to win this year’s Masters
The PGA Tour schedule so far this season has been ruled by long shots. Take away Scottie Scheffler’s two victories in 2024, and the tournament winners have mainly come out of nowhere.
That trend is unlikely to continue this week at the Masters , where surprise winners are rare. Yes, you’ll occasionally see triumphant golfers such as 60-to-1 long shot Danny Willett in 2016 or 40-to-1 Hideki Matsuyama in 2021, but most Masters champions follow the same criteria: They have good history at Augusta National, good form entering the tournament and good standing in certain key metrics.
While it’s hard to judge the form of the 13 LIV golfers in the field because they play less often and in less-challenging fields, we have a pretty good sense of what a Masters winner should look like:
He’s good at Augusta National: According to Datagolf, course history is far more predictive at Augusta National than at any other course in the PGA Tour rotation. Nine of the past 14 winners (and 13 of the past 18) had a previous green jacket or a top-10 Masters finish.
He’s not a Masters rookie or an amateur: Only three players have won the Masters in their first appearance at the tournament, the last being Fuzzy Zoeller in 1979. I won’t be considering the following Augusta National first-timers: Ludvig Aberg, Wyndham Clark, Eric Cole, Nick Dunlap, Austin Eckroat, Ryo Hisatsune, Lee Hodges, Nicolai Hojgaard, Jake Knapp, Peter Malnati, Denny McCarthy, Grayson Murray, Matthieu Pavon, Adam Schenk and Stephan Jaeger. Plus, no amateur has won the Masters, and there are five in this year’s field: Santiago de la Fuente, Stewart Hagestad, Christo Lamprecht, Neal Shipley and Jasper Stubbs. In terms of picks to win, you can ignore them.
He’s highly ranked: Of the past 24 Masters winners, 17 entered the tournament in the top 12 of the Official World Golf Ranking, and 22 were in the top 30. But because the OWGR does not award ranking points to LIV golfers , who have plummeted down the rankings board, this trend has become a bit dicey. LIV’s Brooks Koepka had at least a share of the lead for the first three rounds at last year’s Masters before he fell apart on Sunday.
He’s in good form: Of the past 13 Masters champions, only Matsuyama in 2021 did not have at least two top-12 stroke-play finishes in the calendar year of the tournament, either on the PGA Tour or the European Tour. These golfers haven’t exactly been tearing it up this year (or are well past their primes), and they’re off my list: Fred Couples, Rickie Fowler, Ryan Fox, Lucas Glover, Sungjae Im, Zach Johnson, Tom Kim, Kurt Kitayama, Min Woo Lee, Luke List, Phil Mickelson, Collin Morikawa, José María Olazábal, Patrick Reed, Justin Rose, Charl Schwartzel, Vijay Singh, Sepp Straka, Camilo Villegas, Bubba Watson, Mike Weir, Willett, Gary Woodland and Tiger Woods.
He’s good on par-4s: Of the past 11 Masters champions, nine ranked first, second or third in the field in par-4 scoring during the tournament. Nine of the past 12 winners also entered the tournament ranked 11th or better in the PGA Tour’s par-4 birdie-or-better statistic . Rory McIlroy, for instance, ranks 70th in par-4 scoring and 72nd in par-4 birdie-or-better this season, and I won’t be betting him to end his Masters jinx this week. Other golfers who aren’t attacking par-4s this season include Cam Davis and Will Zalatoris (though the latter is tempting because of his strong Augusta National history).
He’s not the defending champion: Only three players since 1960 have won back-to-back Masters — Jack Nicklaus in 1965-66, Nick Faldo in 1989-90 and Tiger Woods in 2001-02. Since 2002, only Woods (2006) and Jordan Spieth (2016) have finished in the top five as the defending champion. Three of the past seven defending champions have missed the cut, and none of those seven finished better than Scheffler’s 10th last year. That means I won’t be betting Jon Rahm, last year’s winner , to repeat.
He didn’t win the week before: The last player to win the tournament immediately preceding the Masters and then win the green jacket was Phil Mickelson in 2006. Since then, only two golfers (Anthony Kim in 2010 and Spieth in 2021) have won the week before and then finished in the top 10 at Augusta. Akshay Bhatia, who just won the Texas Open , will not be on my card.
Now that we’ve eliminated 49 golfers from the field of 89, let’s take a look at a few who can actually win. Odds are as of Wednesday morning at DraftKings Sportsbook :
Scottie Scheffler (+450)
Betting Scheffler at any tournament these days means accepting preposterously low odds, and the Masters is no different. The champion from two years ago and the OWGR No. 1 is again the favorite, for ample reasons. Scheffler has won two of his past three tournaments and was a missed six-footer away from forcing a playoff at the Houston Open two weekends ago. His worst finish this calendar year was a tie for 17th at the American Express; he has been in the top 10 in his seven other tournaments. The knock on Scheffler has always been his putting, but he has gained strokes on the greens in five of his past six tournaments after an equipment change. He’s first on the PGA Tour in par-4 scoring and par-4 birdie-or-better. What’s not to like here, other than the low odds?
Xander Schauffele (+1400)
Schauffele is probably the best player without a major championship (though he does have an Olympic gold medal ), and you have to think he’s about due: The world’s fifth-ranked player has far more top-10s (11) than missed cuts (three) in his 26 major appearances. Three of those top-10s came at Augusta National. Schauffele, who has finished T-5 or better in three of his past four tournaments, trails only Scheffler in par-4 scoring this season and is tied for 17th in par-4 birdie-or-better. And how about this from Kyle Porter of CBS Sports ? Nine of the past 11 Masters winners had gained at least 1.7 strokes tee to green per round in the three months leading into the tournament. Only two PGA Tour golfers fit that bill this year: Scheffler and Schauffele.
Hideki Matsuyama (+2000)
Matsuyama already has a green jacket as the 2021 champion. He also has some blinding form, with a win in February at Riviera (a good course comparison to Augusta National), followed by a tie for 12th at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and a tie for sixth at the Players Championship (two tournaments with elite fields), plus a tie for seventh last weekend in Texas. Matsuyama is one of three golfers in the field to finish at least in the top 25 in each of the past four Masters — Scheffler and Shane Lowry are the others — and he can’t be overlooked.
Joaquín Niemann (+2800)
I think Niemann has one of the better shots out of all the LIV golfers because he comes in with white-hot form: three wins and four top-fives since November, with one of those victories in a full-field DP World Tour event. (LIV golfers can play on the European tour.) He’s also one of only two LIV golfers to average at least two strokes gained per round this season. (Rahm is the other; Dustin Johnson — No. 3 on that list — is well behind both at 1.54 strokes gained per round.) Niemann’s best finish at Augusta National is a tie for 16th last year, but he has made the cut each of the past three years.
Tony Finau (+3500)
Every year, it seems, golf fans get talked into considering Finau at the Masters, and every year he seems to do just okay: He has never missed the cut in six Augusta National appearances, with three top-10s. This year, the world’s 26th-ranked player has missed just one cut in PGA Tour play and tied for second at the Houston Open, his most recent event. Finau can be a little wild off the tee, but that shortcoming is negated a bit at Augusta National because the rough isn’t very penal, and Finau shines at courses with short rough .
Shane Lowry (+6000)
The 2019 British Open champion has been picking up steam as the season has worn on, with a tie for fourth at the Cognizant and a solo third the next week at the Arnold Palmer. Lowry has finished no worse than a tie for 25th in his past four Augusta National appearances and tied for third two years ago. He’s top-20 in par-4 scoring and par-4 birdie-or-better this season.
Sahith Theegala (+5000)
The 26-year-old has played in only one Masters, but it was a ninth-place finish at last year’s tournament. This year, the world No. 15 has four top-10 finishes, with three of them coming over his past five events. Theegala is a respectable 24th in par-4 scoring and 31st in par-4 birdie-or-better.
Cameron Young (+5000)
Young is coming off a tie for seventh at last year’s Masters, has four top-10s this year and is respectable enough on par-4s (12th in par-4 birdie or better, 31st in par-4 scoring). And while Young has yet to win on the PGA Tour, he has four top-10s in major tournaments, including a tie for eighth at last year’s British Open. A win is coming, and it could be at Augusta National.
Jason Day (+6000)
The Aussie, ranked 21st, has the 2015 PGA Championship title on his résumé, and he has finished in second place in each of the other three majors, most recently at last year’s British Open. Day’s recent Masters form has been spotty (two missed cuts and a tie for 39th in his past three visits), but he has four Augusta National top-10s in his career. This season, Day has posted three top-10s and ranks in the top 10 in par-4 scoring and par-4 birdie-or-better.
