Bike Ride through Historic Amsterdam - Free Tour

Bike Ride through Historic Amsterdam - Free Tour Netherlands — #1

Overview of the tour in Amsterdam

Join the bike ride through the historic center of Amsterdam and some of the historic neighborhoods of the city such as Oostelijke Eiladen, Oud-Oost, and De Pijp. The ride is around 10 km long, it is great for people of every age and it takes around 2.30 hours since it includes some breaks. During the stops along the way, we'll discover together the most important events that animate the city as well as the characteristics and peculiarities of the places we will pass through and of the Dutch culture. The rent of the bikes is not included in the tour but you can get them in one of the many bike rental shops in the city.

This activity includes:

  • O'Donnell's
  • Basisschool Oostelijke Eilanden
  • Brief excursus of the Amsterdam's history
  • VIEW OF THE CITY FROM ABOVE
  • Curiosities about Amsterdam
  • Curiosities about Dutch culture
  • Bike ride along canals
  • Insights into some of the neighborhoods we will pass through
  • Tips for enjoying your stay in the city

Meeting point

O'Donnell's, Ferdinand Bolstraat, Amsterdam, Netherlands

The meeting point that I suggest is just behind the Heineken Experience. It's basically a square and on one side there's even a bike rental shop (De Stadsfiets 3). We can meet in front of it or in front of the O'Donnell's pub that is nearby, on the corner.

Things to note

As I have already said, the bike rent is not included so you have to rent the bikes on your own. In the city, there are many shops with various choices in terms of prices or hours of rent (just to give you an idea, the De Stadsfieta 3 rents a bike for an entire day for around 8.50€). If you rent the bike for a longer period than the duration of the tour, at the end I can also give you suggestions about other places that you can explore on your own.

Free Cancellation

You are free to cancel a booking anytime. We kindly remind you to cancel bookings you cannot arrive for. Being reported as absent decreases your customer level points and the benefits you can enjoy.

Best Amsterdam Bike Tours

amsterdam free bike tour

This is a comparison of the various bike tours, both within and outside of the city, bike rentals as well as money-saving deals available to you in Amsterdam.

  • Helpful Tips
  • Amsterdam Bike Tours
  • Bike Tours of the Countryside
  • Bike Rentals
  • Deals and Discounts

The Netherlands is an excellent country to cycle thanks well-marked bike paths and very few hills!

Thus, unsurprisingly, there are many different companies offering bike tours of Amsterdam and the surrounding countryside.

We've broken down all of the different types of tours by category and then compared them by quality and price so that you can find what's right for you!

KNOW BEFORE YOU GO

(1) Be sure to inquire about a helmet as some companies will not automatically supply you with one.

(2) Don't worry if you're not used to biking in a city. Your guide will help familiarize you with the rules of the road, so you'll be left feeling comfortable and confident in no time!

(3) Remember that Amsterdam is a FULL of cyclists, so make sure you yield to locals who are using their bike to commute to work.

(4) Thankfully, the large number of cyclists means that there are also a lot of clearly marked bike lanes. Stay within these lanes and follow basic traffic safety laws to avoid an unnecessary collision.

GUIDED CITY BIKE TOURS

There are several highly-rated companies leading guided tours around Central Amsterdam.

All feature very similar sites and attractions such as the famous canals, Museum Square, Oude Kerk, the Royal Palace, the Red Light, and many others.

The biggest difference between each company is the length and price of their tours, with 1-hour tours averaging €20/person and 3-hour tours around €30.

Most companies offer tours in English, Dutch, Spanish as well as French.

Most limit their groups to 12 riders, though online reviews seem to imply this isn't always the case, so read the fine print, especially with less expensive tours.

Below are a few of our top picks, but there are really many more options to browse .

All tours listed below can be canceled at no charge up to 24 hours before you ride.

We Bike Amsterdam

We Bike Amsterdam run a 3-hour bike tour of the city that aims to explore the lesser-known part of Amsterdam.

You will visit hidden courtyards and churches of the Jordaan, Vondelpark, Museumplein, and your local guide's favorite coffee shop.

This company guarantees that their guides are "locally born and bred" and English speaking.

They have a nearly perfect review rating on TripAdvisor and Get Your Guide ( read the reviews ).

They also supply ponchos in case of rain, though helmets are only given upon request.

Amsterdam 3-Hour Bike Tour: Backstreets and Hidden Gems

  • 3-hour tour of Amsterdam's backstreets and hidden gems
  • 10:00 am and 14:00 (2 pm) most days of the week

  • You can cancel for free up to 24 hours before the tour.

A-Bike Rental and Tours

A-Bike Rental and Tours offer 2 different guided tours of the city, a standard 3-hour bike tour, and an abbreviated 1-hour trip.

They are also a well-reviewed sightseeing company.

Similarly, they also offer a 1-hour tour of Vondelpark , which is a beautiful city escape featuring canals, rose gardens, and sculptures of the park. Concludes at a coffee shop.

This company is also well-reviewed .

Amsterdam City Bike Tours

  • 3 hour guided bike tour around the city center
  • Departs daily at either 11:00 am or 12:00 pm

Additional Companies

As mentioned above, there are but there are really many bike tours in Amsterdam .

AMSTERDAM COUNTRYSIDE BIKE TOURS

Those nervous about cycling on Amsterdam's busy streets should consider taking a bike tour into the countryside.

It's a short bike ride to get out of the hustle and bustle of the city and into more peaceful surroundings.

There are 3 different companies offering these types of tours.

Amsterbike and Mike's Bike Tours and Rentals offer countryside tours that include a cheese tasting and clog-making demonstration.

Yellow Bike Tours offer a similar tour, though without the promise of visiting a cheese and clog factory.

Amsterbike's Windmills, Cheese, & Clogs Tour is very similar to Mike's Bike Tours (below), but 1 hour shorter and departs in the morning rather than the afternoon.

Sites include traditional Dutch houses, a windmill, a cheese farm, and a clog factory. Tours depart every morning at 10:00 am, allowing for plenty of time to sightsee more later in the day.

It is also slightly cheaper than Mike's Bike Tours.

Windmills, Cheese & Clogs: 3-Hour Countryside Bike Tour

  • 3-hour bike tour into the countryside along the Amstel River to see historic houses, a windmill, and a cheese farm and clog factory
  • Departs daily at 10:00 am
  • From €28/adult and €20/child

Reviews of Amsterbike

Though their city tour is much more popular, the 3-Hour Countryside Bike Tour offered by Amsterbike receives outstanding reviews.

Guests describe their experience as thoroughly enjoyable and a great day out. The bikes themselves are also praised for being of excellent quality.

Mike's Bike Tours and Rentals

This 4-hour bike ride into the Dutch countryside visits historic windmills, a cheese farmhouse, and a wooden clog factory, amongst other sites.

You will also visit Vondelpark, Amsterdam’s largest and most well-known park, during your ride back.

Their guides are well-versed and will provide a historical background of each area as you go.

Rain ponchos are provided, but helmets are usually only available upon request.

Amsterdam Countryside Bike Tour Including Cheese Tasting and Clog Demonstration

  • 4-hour bike tour through the countryside to see a historical windmill, a Dutch cheese farmhouse, and a factory where you will watch how wooden clogs are made.
  • Departs daily at 12:00 pm
  • From €46.91/adult and €39.28/youth

Reviews of Mike's Bike Tours and Rentals

The Amsterdam Countryside Bike Tour is their most popular tour on offer. People who have taken it to call it the "perfect tour" and say that they "wish we had only done this sooner."

For many, the cheese farm and clog factory were the highlights of the tour. Several others commented on the tour's value, stating that they felt it was well worth the money.

The only consistent criticism comes from people who wished they had more time on the bikes.

Yellow Bike Tours

Yellow Bike Tours also lead countryside tours outside of Amsterdam. The half-day bike ride brings you past beautiful villages, waterways, and a windmill.

You also are allowed a 45-minute break for lunch to enjoy in the idyllic countryside. At $38 per person, this tour is slightly more expensive than the others on offer.

Amsterdam: Dutch Countryside Half-Day Bike Ride

  • 4-hour tour through the Dutch countryside on flat trails
  • Departs daily at 10:30 am
  • From €34.50/adult and €17.25/child

Reviews of Yellow Bike Tours

Once again, this company's city tour is their most popular. However, the Dutch Countryside Half-Day Bike Tour is very highly praised.

AMSTERDAM BIKE RENTALS

For those who don't have the time or interest in taking a cycling tour, you can also opt to simply rent a bike for a day to take a self-guided tour around the city.

A-Bike Rentals and Tours offer an all-day rental for €15. Rental includes bike locks, carrier straps, a bell, and free coffee at the store.

You will also receive basic safety instructions and suggestions from their staff.

City Bike Tour ‘s Itinerary

The city bike tour starts from our office at Spuistraat 30. This is centrally located and close to Amsterdam Central Station. We ride our bikes through the historic city center of Amsterdam and cycle alongside the canals and across the city ‘s bridges.

Amsterdam in the 17th century…

On one of the first stops, we visit the head office of the Dutch West-Indian Company and learn about the economy and history of 17th century Amsterdam. While getting an understanding about what was known as  Amsterdam ‘s Golden Age , we are headed to the Jordaan, one of the city ‘s most picturesque quarters. We ride our bikes through the quiet backstreets of this former working class area and discover the many hidden gems and secret courtyards of the neighborhood.

Cycling around Amsterdam

Bike touring

There are many things that the beautiful, spirited Netherlands is known for but cycling in Amsterdam surely trumps everything else. Cobbled streets, quaint bridges, canals and colourful terraces all blend together, making this magnetic capital a firm favourite for two-wheeling.

With over 60 miles (100 km) of canals as well as a lakeside position and close proximity to the North Sea, cycle routes throughout Amsterdam are very much defined by serene and charming waterways. With an outstanding network of cycle paths both in the capital and fanning outwards, you can ride for hours or days in the surrounding areas. Cycle along the coast northwards for views across the water and never encounter so much as a hill.

Traffic-free cycle paths abound and with understanding drivers, cycling in Amsterdam and it’s more rural surroundings is fantastic for families. In the south of the city, Amsterdam Forest is the place to get your fill of nature.

Your authentic e-bike adventure in Amsterdam

Discover Amsterdam’s most iconic treasures on this e-bike tour of the city, with the added flexibility of bike rental!

Amsterdam isn’t called the “Venice of the North” for nothing – canals course through the Netherlands’ capital like veins, providing much of its cultural lifeblood. Your bicycle tour takes you along these historic waterways for your true introduction to Amsterdam!

With Dam’s canals come drawbridges and canal houses – let your guide bring you up to speed with the waterways’ fascinating features. You may be lucky enough to witness these historic drawbridges in action!

Arriving at Anne Frank’s house, park your e-bike for poignant reflection on the banks of the Prinsengracht canal. Discover the story of the young diarist who fled Nazi persecution, hiding in the rooms of the ‘Secret Annex’. A short ride away, occupying the outskirts of the stunning Vondelpark, is the Rijksmuseum, whose exquisite exterior is bound to stop you in your cycle tracks! This is the Netherlands’ national museum, honoring the diverse beauty of Dutch history and art.

Venturing into Vondelpark, soak up the serenity of the city’s urban oasis. As you glide along under the green canopy, your guide will reveal how the park requires a renovation every three decades due to its lowering ground levels. But you needn’t have that sinking feeling – Vondelpark is a stunning section of the city to explore, boasting cycle paths lined with beautiful trees alive with rejuvenating birdsong. From here, cycle to the smallest house in the city for your tour’s intriguing finale!

Gear Up in Amsterdam

Your Amsterdam e-biking adventure begins at a pre-designated location near Central Station shortly before 9:30 am. When everyone has gathered and the meets and greets have wrapped up, tune in as your guide introduces you to your ride for the day—a high-quality e-bike. Known for their comfort and ease of use, these bikes are perfect for your 22-mile (35km) journey. As you familiarize yourself with the bike, your guide will outline the exciting route and share essential biking tips, ensuring you're all set for a memorable ride through the Dutch countryside.

Pedal Along IJ Boulevard & Dutch Polder Landscape

Setting off from Amsterdam, your path winds along the IJ Boulevard, a lovely waterfront promenade, to a ferry. After boarding with your group for a short journey across the IJ river, you’ll set off again, this time through the charming Noord district that’s brimming with art studios and village-like neighborhoods. Upon reaching Waterland, you’ll quickly be immersed in the region’s idyllic polder landscapes—an extraordinary feat of Dutch engineering that reclaimed land from marshland. Admire the time-tested network of ditches, dikes, and lush greenery, and pause to listen to your guide’s stories about the river's significance in shaping Dutch history.

Stop for Windmills, Clogs, Cheese, and More

This adventure isn’t solely about biking, and one of the stops you’ll make along the way is at an authentic (and extremely picturesque) Dutch windmill. This particular windmill, The Admiral (De Admiraal) dates back to 1792, and while now a picturesque photo spot, was once used for a variety of purposes, such as grinding grain, sawing wood, and managing water levels.

Along your biking journey, you'll also stop by a quintessential Dutch cheese farm and clog factory. Here, enjoy the company of a friendly farmer who'll demonstrate the age-old crafts of cheese making and clog carving. Don't miss the chance to sample some delicious Gouda and tuck into the quaint gift shop for unique souvenirs.

A Glimpse of the Past in Monnickendam

The final destination on your delightful journey through the Dutch countryside is the idyllic town of Monnickendam. Known for its historic houses and picturesque harbor, Monnickendam seems to have frozen in time, offering a snapshot of the 17th-century Dutch way of life. Afterward, it’s time to return to Amsterdam Central Station. Expect to arrive back around 1:30 pm, which gives you the rest of your afternoon and evening free to relax or discover more of the city’s lively charm. Thanks for joining!

Hi, We are going to Amaterdam in the coming week and have booked a bicycle tour to see tulips. The route is 15kms but I'm not too confident to ride for that duration. I'm trying to unable to find any cycling tours which are for 10 kms. Would you know of any tour providers who have tours for 10kms?

3 replies to this topic

' class=

15 kilometers is one hour of cycling, maybe 1.5 hours if you are very slow (to the point of almost falling over).

If that is too much for you then indeed it might be better to cancel the tour. Or ask for an electric bike?

Or rent a bike yourself as suggested in #1, and see how far you get. But in that case start with headwind! If you start with tailwind it will be nice and easy but the way back will feel 4 times as hard. Apps like Windy and Windfinder tell you the wind direction.

amsterdam free bike tour

You'll probably stop a lot so it's not like you need to cycle 15km in one go. I think you will be fine.
