Tour guide Eddy took us from Phoenix to the Grand Canton. Knowledgeable, personable and considerate guide. Highly recommend this company and this guide. Took us to the main viewing spots as well as the lesser known.

Wonderful trip. Steve was extremely knowledgeable. I highly recommend this company.

This trip was amazing. Our guide, Steve, was fantastic. We went to the Cameron Trading Post and had lunch before the canyon. The Navajo Taco was delicious!! Steve knew a lot about the Grand Canyon and took us to some great viewing spots. He made some great suggestions on places to visit at the Grand Canyon Village too. He clearly loves Arizona and knows about the plants, animals and history of the state. This was a great day trip to see the Grand Canyon!

We booked this for my husband's 40th birthday so I was nervous that it might not be what he wanted. Bobby was our tour guide and he exceeded our expectations! From my 11yr old daughter to the adults, everyone had a great time. We learned about the history of the Grand Canyon and got to explore on a fully customized trip. We ate lunch at the Indian reservation and had so many breathtaking moments. I know understand how not all things can be captured in a photo. You have to experience in person! Highly recommend! We already plan to come back next year.

Awesome!!!!!!!!!! This was such a great small group tour! We did the trip from Scottsdale to Sedona for the day for my girlfriends bachelorette. It was such an amazing tour! Our tour guide Jonathan was sooooo amazing! He took us to all the important spots, took all the pictures! We had amazing lunch and finished at the Winery! Honestly I couldn't have asked more from this tour it was the perfect tour! I generally can't stand tours but this one was GREAT! The van was so comfortable too! Book with them now!

We recently took this tour the 1st week in June. We have taken excursions/tours when visiting other places before, but we were beyond impressed with the experience with Arizona Scenic Tours. They were extremely organized, we were contacted very quickly after placing our reservation on viator, then we were provided with reminders up until the day before. I really liked that on the AM of pick up, our tour guide, Eddie, sent a picture of himself and vehicle, so we would know what to look for when he picked us up from the hotel. We were traveling with 2 adults and 2 kids, so there were consistent bathroom stops, but that was no issue. Eddie was awesome and provided us with facts and information the entire drive and even stopped along the way to show us certain things and took family pictures. Once we arrived at the canyon, he showed us many things, took family pictures and even gave us the option to explore on our own if we wanted. It was an awesome tour, he was great with our kids and engaged with them constantly. I can't say enough and would recommend that anyone considering taking this tour, go ahead and make their reservation. AZ Scenic Tours was great and I know our family will definitely do another one of their tours when in AZ again.

Excellent experience! My friend and I went to Phoenix for a long weekend and wanted to see something outside the city, so we contacted Steve about tour options. He was very responsive and answered all my questions, and we decided on the Grand Canyon/Sedona tour. The tour was amazing and everything - from pickup at the hotel, the ride itself, and the different stops- went smoothly and comfortable. Steve was the perfect tour guide, as he is very knowledgable about Arizona and shared many interesting facts. He is very personable and stayed flexible with timing and open to our preferences (the tour took 14 hours total). To sum it up: Scheduling tour 5/5 Tour guide 5/5 Tour itself 5/5 Stops/Sights 5/5 Cleanliness and condition of van 5/5 Price for what you get 5/5 Anything I didn't mention 5/5 Next time I make it back to Aizona, I will plan to take one of his other tours (they all sound great!).

Thanks very much for your review! We do everything we can to ensure a positive experience. The Grand Canyon tours are definitely a full day at 12 to 14 hours. We are glad it was worth every moment! We also have half day tours in Phoenix, and day tours to places such as Sedona and Tombstone that are about 10 to 11 hours in length, plus much more on our website. The link can be found on our Yelp page. Thanks again!! Hope to see you back in AZ!

Grand Canyon Loop Day Tour Is The Way To Go!! Great Experience! My friends had been giving me grief for years about living in Arizona since 1999 and never having been to the Grand Canyon - not that I even leave my zip code very often... After a recent, pretty severe round of ribbing from my friends, I went on line and discovered Arizona Scenic Tours. Reviews of the company and their tours were really good, and they offered exactly what I wanted, a one day Phoenix, Grand Canyon, and back day tour. Reviews of that particular tour made it sound like exactly what I wanted - an enjoyable tour with a great guide without me having to get behind the steering wheel to accomplish it. I contacted Steve, the owner, to find about availability, and he was able to book me for a very reasonable priced upcoming tour with two couples. He arranged for the tour to pick me up at my house in Scottsdale at 7:30 am on tour day, and drop me off back at home upon arriving back in the area around 8:30 that evening. What easier way could there be to see the Grand Canyon, and get my friends off of my back. I ended up having an enjoyable and enlightening day from start to finish. The tour guide, Mike, was friendly, affable, really knew his "stuff", was easy to listen to, and had great sense of humor. By the time he had all five of us on the tour in the van for a short while, we had become a comfortable and companionable group. We left the Phoenix area a little later than anticipated due to scattered pick up locations, but once on the road, we made good time. We learned that Mike had gone above and beyond the call of duty to arrange for a weather change from the rainy overcast day originally forecast for our tour, to a bright sunny one. Not every tour guide has those skills... Our first stop was Montezuma's Castle. I had been there previously, but it was much more interesting with all of the information and details that Mike brought to the table - most of which I didn't learn on my original visit there. He made sure we gained admission quickly and conveniently, and that we got back on the road in a timely manner. Arriving at, and leaving Montezuma's Castle, and throughout the trip, Mike made sure we were supplied with cold water, or soda if we preferred. All along the way from Phoenix, to the Castle, on to the Grand Canyon stops, and back Mike filled in the drive with information about the various areas we were passing through, including changes in vegetation at various elevations. The entire tour was much more interesting than I had anticipated, and I found that the day passed quickly. We visited overlooks at the Grand Canyon Village, Yavapai Point and Desert View Watchtower, each of which had unique views and attractions. There was plenty of time to grab food and take in the sights as we made the three stops. While not being intrusive, Mike was a wealth of information all along the way. I don't think I would have found the tour so interesting without the points that Mike was making. We even got to see and photograph several mule dear as we waited in line at a stop sign leaving our initial lookout. They seemed not even to notice the traffic as it passed them. We left our final stop at the Desert View Watchtower at around 5:15 pm, and headed past the Little Colorado River Gorge, and along the scenic route through the colorful Painted Desert. The sun set as we reached the vicinity of Flagstaff, and there wasn't much left to see after that point, but it had been a great day. Traffic delays caused us to get back to the Phoenix area a bit later than anticipated, but we were all pleased not to have been part of the Labor Day traffic backed up in the direction from which we had come. It was a great day, and I am now considering doing the Sedona tour next!

Home to the world-famous Grand Canyon, one of the best-known natural wonders of the world, Arizona showcases some of the most dramatic scenery in the country. The much-photographed Monument Valley, volcanic fields, and gorgeous rock formations highlight different stages of Earth’s geology.

In stark contrast with the barren rocks, the Sonoran Desert, home of the giant saguaro, tells a different story — a story of survival in a waterless area, defying visions of the desert as a dry and sand-filled land.

In the center of the state is a transition zone, with deciduous and pine forests and more lakes and reservoirs than you would expect.

Scenic drives offer the opportunity to experience some of Arizona’s varied topography and dramatic landscapes. You can find these drives in every corner of the state, and they feature everything from lava flows and cactus gardens to canyon rims, mesa tops, and pine forests. The following are only a few of the drives you can take to experience the gorgeous landscape of Arizona.

9 Most Amazing Scenic Drives In Arizona

1. grand canyon south rim scenic drive.

Desert View along the south rim of the Grand Canyon.

Showcasing the world-famous Grand Canyon , the 57-mile South Rim Drive starts in Cameron, just off Interstate 89 North, and runs through Grand Canyon National Park. Running along the Little Colorado River Gorge, the road offers opportunities to stop at two overlooks.

Inside the Grand Canyon National Park, Desert View is your first stop, where you can walk up to the Lookout Tower, enjoying the Native American art on its walls and gorgeous views of the canyon, including the Colorado River at the bottom. Next, you’ll have the opportunity to stop at all the viewpoints, or park at the Main Visitor Center and explore the rim of the trails. Then keep driving to Grand Canyon Village, the park’s headquarters. Here, you’ll find all the park’s amenities, including dining and lodging choices.

The drive is open year-round, though it gets extremely busy in the summer, especially on weekends. The best times to visit are the shoulder seasons. Winter gets cold, but it offers an opportunity to visit without the crowds.

Explore hotels and Airbnbs near Grand Canyon South Rim Scenic Drive

Note: Located in the Native American Navajo Nation, the road from Cameron to Desert View was closed at the time of my visit currently closed . I could still drive it in the opposite direction, from Grand Canyon Village to Desert View. Watch the advisories to see when the rest of the stretch will open.

2. Sedona To Oak Creek Canyon Scenic Drive

Oak Creek Canyon in Sedona, Arizona.

This 27-mile scenic road connects the ponderosa-pine-filled high country of Arizona in Flagstaff with the red rock country of Sedona , following the narrow and spectacular Oak Creek Canyon.

The scenic road, Interstate 89A, starts 2 miles south of Flagstaff at Exit 337 off of Interstate 17 South and heads through a ponderosa pine forest. Make sure you stop at Oak Creek Vista Point for gorgeous views of Oak Creek Canyon. From here, the road follows steep switchbacks down to the canyon floor and continues along the creek. Here, you’ll find two campgrounds and day-use areas with picnic tables, if you wish to stop.

Halfway through the canyon, you’ll reach Slide Rock State Park , one of the most popular swimming areas in the state, where the creek rushing through the slippery rocks creates a natural waterslide.

The scenic drive ends in Sedona, known as one of the most beautiful small towns in the United States, filled with art boutiques and surrounded by gorgeous red rock formations.

This scenic road gets very busy during the summer months, especially on weekends. Campgrounds in Oak Creek Canyon are first come, first served, so if you’d like to camp, make sure you get there early. If you’re trying to get to Slide Rock, avoid weekends and go early.

3. Apache Trail Scenic Drive

Beautiful landscape along the Apache Trail.

A National Scenic Byway, the Apache Trail crosses the rugged northern part of the Superstition Mountains just northeast of Phoenix , offering access to three reservoirs and gorgeous desert scenery.

Named for the Apache people who once used this trail, the road winds through canyons and mountain ridges, offering plenty of pull-outs where you can enjoy the surroundings. It starts at the Goldfield Ghost Town , goes to Lost Dutchman State Park, and then heads north and passes Needle Vista, with gorgeous views of the Superstition Wilderness.

You’ll drive through hills filled with giant saguaros, with several scenic stops where you have the opportunity to enjoy the gorgeous scenery or take a hike through the cactus-filled desert. Eventually, the road descends to Canyon Lake, with opportunities to stop and enjoy the narrow reservoir surrounded by towering rocks.

Past it, you’ll reach Tortilla Flat, the only “community” there (with a population of six people), home to a cafe and gift shop. Tortilla Flat is the end of the road at this time. A few miles past it, the road is closed due to extensive road damage caused by the Woodbury Fire in 2019. However, even just to Tortilla Flat, the road is still one of the most scenic ones in the state.

4. Kayenta To Monument Valley Scenic Drive

Monument Valley Scenic Drive in Arizona.

The best-known and most-photographed scenic road in the Southwest, featured in movies like Forrest Gump , this stretch of road through the Navajo Nation is a visual experience you’ll never forget. The rough, barren land, with its sparse vegetation, showcases some of the best geological features of our planet. The sandstone in all shades of rust, orange, purple, and red, eroded into surreal forms, is striking.

The 22-mile stretch of U.S. 163 runs from Kayenta to the Monument Valley turnoff, passes into Utah for a few miles, and then returns to Monument Valley in Arizona.

Along the way, you’ll drive through mesas and ridges, cross the deep Laguna Creek, and drive by Comb Ridge. One of the most striking features of this landscape is the sharp peak of Agathlan, a large volcanic rock formation visible for miles.

But nothing compares to the first view of the vast Monument Valley, filled with rock formations of all shapes and sizes rising 400 to 1,000 feet from the flat surface.

Explore hotels and Airbnbs near Kayenta To Monument Valley Scenic Drive

Note: Since this road is fully on the Navajo Nation’s territory,  please check the Monument Valley home page for updates.

5. Sky Island Scenic Byway

Views from Arizona's Mount Lemmon.

This 25-mile paved National Forest Scenic Byway, one of Arizona’s most beautiful drives, ascends the 9,157-foot Mount Lemmon in the rugged Santa Catalina Mountains north of Tucson . The road travels from the saguaro-filled Sonoran Desert to the fir-filled summit, offering scenic views with plenty of camping and picnicking opportunities.

One of Arizona’s “sky islands,” the mountains tower above the surrounding environment, offering a refuge from the desert heat. Temperatures drop as much as 25 degrees from the bottom of the mountain to the end of the road.

You’ll find plenty of scenic overlooks; Windy Point is considered one of the best. Higher up, you’ll enter the pine forest, a much cooler zone where you’ll find plenty of hiking trails, picnic areas, and campgrounds. The road ends at Summerhaven, but just 2 miles before reaching the rustic village, you can turn toward the ski area, where you can take a trail to the summit of Mount Lemmon.

The road is open year-round, though the highest areas might be closed during the winter. It’s popular during the summer, when you should avoid visiting on weekends, if possible.

Explore hotels and Airbnbs near Sky Island Scenic Byway

6. Willcox To Chiricahua Scenic Drive

Chiricahua National Monument in Arizona.

This 42-mile road takes you along the southern edge of the Dos Cabezas Mountains before climbing up Bonita Canyon to the scenic Massai Point at the Chiricahua National Monument . The scenic byway, following Arizona Highways 186 and 181, passes through the shrub- and cacti-filled landscape of the Upper Sonoran Desert to fir and pine forests at the highest elevations.

But you’ll find the best scenery in the unique and remote Chiricahua Mountains, filled with towering rock formations. Massai Point, the end of the road, is the climax of this drive, home to the area aptly nicknamed the “Wonderland of Rocks.”

The road is open year-round, though it’s best experienced during the shoulder seasons since summers tend to get hot, and during the winter, parts of the road may be closed due to snow.

Services are available in Wilcox, but none farther on. You’ll find campgrounds in Coronado National Forest and at the Chiricahua National Monument.

Explore hotels and Airbnbs near Willcox To Chiricahua Scenic Drive

7. Fredonia-Vermillion Cliffs Scenic Road

A highway running through the Kaibab Plateau in Arizona

The Fredonia-Vermillion Cliffs Scenic Road takes you on U.S. 89A from Fredonia to the junction with U.S. 89 south of Page. As you drive along the desolate road crossing the Kaibab Plateau, you are surrounded by gorgeous colored sandstone cliffs until you reach the Kaibab National Forest, filled with spruce, aspen, ponderosa pine, and juniper.

Past the forested area, you’ll travel along the foot of the Vermillion Cliffs rising from the Paria Plateau, my favorite stretch of this road. Though mostly devoid of vegetation, the cliffs offer the most picturesque backdrop for the road; their shapes and changing colors of all shades of red offer a feast for the eyes.

Then you reach the Navajo Bridge, spanning across the gorgeous Marble Canyon and the Colorado River below. This is one of our favorite places to stop along this route, to enjoy the surrounding landscape, and, when open, step inside the interpretive center and bookstore run by the Navajo Nation.

Past the Navajo Bridge, the route turns south along the foot of the Echo Cliffs and ends at the junction with U.S. 89 at Bitter Springs.

Explore hotels and Airbnbs near Fredonia-Vermillion Cliffs Scenic Road

8. Red Rock Scenic Byway

Red Rock Scenic Byway

Red Rock Scenic Byway, often called a “ museum without walls, is only 14.5 miles long scenic road, but the drive itself is stunning. The layered pattern in the red rock features along the way is best observed at Cathedral Rock, a cliff-like red rock formation, popular with hikers and spiritualists.

Apart from the desert viewpoints and rock landmarks, there are also fun things to stop and see like the Tlaquepaque Arts & Shopping Village ,  the walkable shopping district. However, the Chapel of the Holy Cross, which offers breathtaking views of the landscape from high above, is the ultimate bucket list item on the Red Rock Scenic Byway route.

Explore hotels and Airbnbs near Red Rock Scenic Byway

9. Petrified Forest Scenic Road

Petrified Forest Scenic Road

The colorful Petrified Forest Road bisects the Petrified Forest National Park which is of interest primarily due to the forest of extinct ancient trees that produce an awe-inspiring display of color and shape. The park is some 26 miles east of the old mining town of Holbrook. Consider this town a place of interest for the errant fossil hunter and gem collector.

Honorable mention to other Arizona attractions goes to Joshua Forest Scenic Road, Goldfield Ghost Town, Window Rock Tribal Park, and Lake Powell.

Whichever road trip you choose, Arizona’s scenic drives unveil a stunning tapestry of landscapes. Embark on a memorable journey through the iconic red rocks of Sedona, drive past the otherworldly landscapes of Monument Valley, and marvel at the vastness of the Grand Canyon. Witness the Sonoran Desert’s saguaro cacti, and explore the historic Route 66. You will remember this road trip for decades to come.

Arizona in Pictures: 19 Beautiful Places to Photograph

Written by Lana Law Updated Mar 22, 2022

Scenic towns, national parks , and historic sites provide all the necessary ingredients for great photos. If you're looking to create beautiful pictures, you've come to the right place.

Photographing the desert is a real treat. The saugaros are always popular subjects, but you can find interesting sights everywhere. In March and April, the desert comes to life with the spring bloom. Bright colored flowers, with strong tones of orange, yellow, and purple, stand out against various hues of green.

In winter , some areas of Arizona get snow . In higher areas, snow is a given in winter. Arizona even has ski hills. But in places that only see the occasional white dusting on mountain tops and buttes, you can sometimes capture very unique images.

For a complete look at the most beautiful places to photograph in Arizona, see our list below.

1. Grand Canyon

2. antelope canyon, 3. monument valley, 5. canyon de chelly national monument, 6. tumacácori national historical park, 7. hoover dam, 9. saguaro national park, 11. organ pipe cactus national monument, 12. tombstone, 13. chiricahua national monument, 14. prescott, 16. lake powell, 17. palatki heritage site, 18. canyon lake, 19. arizona snowbowl ski resort.

Grand Canyon

One of the most popular photo destinations in the United States, the Grand Canyon never disappoints. Looking out over the canyon to the Colorado River far below, it's easy to get creative. Most people visit the Grand Canyon at the South Rim . Lookouts can be found all along the road that parallels the rim, and each offers a slightly different perspective of the Grand Canyon.

If you are fit and looking for more creative ways to photograph the Grand Canyon, try hitting the hiking trails and head down into the canyon. If you aren't up for quite that level of activity, take a stroll along the rim.

Antelope Canyon

If you've visited art galleries in Arizona featuring images of the Southwest, chances are you have seen photos of Antelope Canyon. Twisting canyon walls pierced by shafts of light filtering through from the top of this slot canyon make for fantastic images. Although you have to see the canyon on a tour, it is easy to access, and the ground is level for walking.

Monument Valley

One of the most iconic images of the Southwest is the sandstone buttes rising from the desert floor at Monument Valley. Located near the Utah border, it is a little out of the way but well worth the effort of getting here. A 17-mile dirt road in Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park takes you right up close to these towering giants.

Cathedral Rock in Sedona

Arguably the most scenic town in Arizona, Sedona is a delight for anyone with a camera. The red rock mountains, sometimes snowcapped on cold days, are a stunning sight.

You can find some outstanding hiking trails in Sedona , which will take you into this colorful landscape. Or you can simply stop off at the lookouts.

Bell Rock , which is just south of Sedona in the Village of Oak Creek, and nearby Courthouse Butte are popular sites. You can get a good view over Sedona from Airport Road , where you'll also find parking pullouts.

Canyon de Chelly

When it comes to Native American cliff dwellings, Canyon de Chelly is one of the most incredible sites in the Southwest. The dwellings are tucked in cliffside caves on the lower levels of huge, sheer stone walls that reach 1,000 feet in height. To photograph here, be sure to bring a long lens. You'll be viewing most of these from a distance.

Canyon de Chelly is in the far northeast corner of Arizona, and a long way from any major tourist destination. It's most convenient to visit if you are planning to see the Four Corners Monument, a little less than two hours away.

Structures and graves at Tumacácori National Historical Park

If you would like to explore a little history, and photograph some interesting structures, head to Tumacácori National Historical Park. Adobe structures of various hues in the sunlight make incredible subjects for pictures. The park is located about 45 minutes south of Tucson and makes for a nice afternoon outing.

Hoover Dam

On the border between Arizona and Nevada, Hoover Dam is a popular tourist spot. You can stop here, where you'll find a visitors' center, and walk across the dam to get a true appreciation for the size of the dam. This is one of the top day trips from Las Vegas . A popular way of seeing and photographing the dam is from a helicopter. Tours leave from Las Vegas.

Jerome

This mountain town, not far from Sedona, was a former mining town. Although it's often described as a ghost town, there is a lot going on here, and plenty of restaurants and shops. You can see fabulous views from anywhere in town, looking out over the desert and Mogollin Rim in the distance.

Valley View Trail in Saguaro National Park

The saguaro cactus is another iconic image of the Southwest and a much loved subject for photographers visiting Arizona. They only grow in certain areas of Arizona, but one of the best places to see them is in Saguaro National Park, near Tucson. You can take a scenic drive or get out into the desert on some of the hiking trails . When you've finished, head back to the city and explore the sights of Tucson .

Bisbee

This former mining town in the far southeast corner of Arizona near the Mexico border is set at an elevation of approximately 5,500 feet. Old miners' cabins, many of which have been renovated, line the hillsides.

Views from the upper streets out over the rolling mountains are incredible, particularly at sunset. The town today has numerous coffee shops, galleries, and stores, and offers an Old West feel but with an authentic character.

If you don't want to stay in Bisbee, you can day trip here from Tucson or Tombstone.

Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument

This outstanding area near the border with Mexico is a bit out of the way but well worth the effort to visit. The organ pipe cactus is what many people come here to see. What they are often not expecting is the mountainous landscape and beautiful vistas. A number of excellent hiking trails, including one of the best hiking trails in Arizona , can be found in the park.

Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument is also one of the best places to camp in Arizona . Since it is off the beaten path and quite a distance from the nearest town, camping is convenient. The dark skies and peaceful surrounding make it a very enjoyable place to set up a tent or RV for a couple of days.

Stagecoach in Tombstone

Visitors can find a recreated glimpse of the old Wild West in Tombstone. Although the town does have historic sites, it's the cowboys riding through town and staged gun fights that tourists will notice first. Highlights in Tombstone include the OK Coral , Boothill Graveyard , and the always action-packed Allen Street .

Author, Lana Law, in Chiricahua National Monument

Chiricahua National Monument is a bit out of the way but worth a visit. Hiking is the best way to explore the park and capture incredible photos. Trails lead through canyons and past towering spires of rock. The park is also a great spot for camping in Arizona . A visit to this national monument, located in the southeast corner of the state, is most convenient if you are visiting places like Tucson, Tombstone, or Bisbee.

Watson Lake, Prescott

Prescott is a little different from what many people expect from a city in Arizona. At an elevation of about 5,300 feet, about 1,000 feet higher than Sedona, this city has noticeably different seasons and even sometimes has snow in winter. The most scenic area is around Watson Lake , where orange granite rocks surround deep blue water.

You can also find scenic areas in the forest and hills around town. You'll find great views from the waters' edge. Prescott's hiking trails also offer access to some lovely terrain and provide good opportunities for photography.

Donkey in Oatman

If you want to get off the beaten path and take a great drive along Route 66 , head up to Oatman. Leaving from Kingman, the twisting old highway leads up to this one-street village. The Old West-style village does not see the large numbers of tourists, like Bisbee or Jerome, although it is a hot spot for bikers. With the old wooden buildings and donkeys wandering through town, you can always find something to photograph.

Lake Powell

Lake Powell is a scenic area that offers endless opportunities for pictures. The blue water contrasts beautifully with the orange, yellow, and red of the surrounding rock landscape.

Cliff dwellings at Palatki Heritage Site

The Palatki Heritage Site, near Sedona, is home to a number of cliff dwellings and rock art. Unlike some sites in Arizona that need to be viewed from quite a distance, these are much more accessible. Take a tour to learn about the history and get right up close to these ruins.

Nearby is Honanki Heritage Site, which is also worth a visit.

Canyon Lake

A lake in the desert is always a beautiful sight, and Canyon Lake is no exception. The red cliffs, blue water and sky, and green cactuses and shrubs provide outstanding color for pictures. If you are driving from Phoenix to Tortilla Flat, a popular day trip from Phoenix , you'll drive right by this body of water. Stop off to enjoy the scene and snap a few photos.

View from the slopes of Arizona Snowbowl Ski Resort

From high atop this ancient volcano are some of the best views over the Flagstaff surrounding area. Glide down the slopes and look out to distant hills and plains that expand all the way to the Grand Canyon. Arizona Snowbowl is one of the best ski resorts in Arizona and just a few minutes outside of Flagstaff.

What you need to know

It is hard to believe, but a high percentage of those who win the lottery, never make it to The Wave.

The road to the Wire Pass Trailhead (Wave), House Rock Valley Road, is difficult in the best of times and dangerous in the worst of times. Very rocky, often deeply rutted, and totally impassable when wet, this road presents a unique set of challenges. High clearance 4x4 vehicles are highly recommended.

The rocky, sandy, uneven and fully exposed hiking trail also presents a challenge to many. The route is raw and unimproved. Please be prepared to hike approximately 7-8+ total miles exposed to all manner of elements - extreme heat in the summer and cold/icy in the winter.

Private Wave Tour*

The total package! You will be picked up from your Page, AZ area hotel/rental and provided a fully-guided tour all the way to The Wave. This option includes a custom media package and personalized GoPro movie of your experience!

Groups of 1-2 people

Groups of 3-4 people, groups of 5-6 people, shuttle service*.

If you have successfully won the lottery for The Wave, but do not feel comfortable driving the often-dangerous House Rock Valley Road, relax and take a Lake Powell Scenic Tours shuttle. Your group will be picked up from your Page, AZ hotel/rental and allowed the use of basic backpacks and walking sticks.

Private Shuttle Service

Up to 6 people per private group

*Requires that you have successfully won a permit for The Wave through the Bureau of Land Management's lottery system.

We'd love to hear from you!

Best places to visit in arizona.

Arizona is home to incredible landscapes, lively cities, spooky ghost towns, world-class spas and warm weather year-round, making the state ideal for a getaway any time of year. But to help you decide which Arizona destinations to spend your vacation in, U.S. News considered factors like the number of attractions, the availability of accommodations and the opinions of everyday travelers to pick the best places to visit in Arizona. Vote for your favorite spot below to help determine next year's list.

Grand Canyon National Park

Canyon de chelly national monument, monument valley, glen canyon national recreation area, vermilion cliffs national monument, coconino national forest, lake powell, wupatki national monument, petrified forest national park, montezuma castle national monument, lake havasu.

arizona scenic tours photos

Undisputed as one of the best national parks in the U.S. , Grand Canyon National Park is Arizona's crowning achievement. Many travelers opt to visit the South Rim, which is home to Grand Canyon Village, scenic overlooks and several hiking trails, including popular routes like Bright Angel Trail and Rim Trail. For a less crowded alternative, try visiting the North Rim between mid-May and mid-October. And if you want a story for the ages, consider a mule ride to the bottom of the canyon or a whitewater rafting trip along the Colorado River.

arizona scenic tours photos

In addition to breathtaking natural landscapes, Canyon de Chelly National Monument within the Navajo Nation is home to nearly 5,000 years of human history, making it one of the longest continuously inhabited destinations in North America. A thriving community of Navajo people still live and work here, surrounded by ancient Pueblo ruins, cliff dwellings and pictographs. While access to the interior of the canyon is limited to tours led by a Navajo guide (this includes excursions on foot, horseback and vehicle), auto-tours along the scenic North and South Rim Drives are self-guided.

arizona scenic tours photos

Whether you're a fan of movies or jaw-dropping landscapes, chances are you'll love visiting Monument Valley. Many films have featured the red sandstone mesas and buttes found in Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park, which occupies land in both Arizona and Utah. Take the 17-mile-long Valley Drive from the visitor center to see some of the Arizona side's most popular sights, including the East and West Mitten buttes, Elephant Butte and John Ford's Point. The latter is named after the famous film director and features a Navajo store where you can buy jewelry and crafts.

arizona scenic tours photos

Spanning more than 1.25 million acres in Utah and Arizona, Glen Canyon National Recreation Area appeals to travelers who are looking to spend some quality time in nature. Spend the afternoon water skiing on Lake Powell, the second-largest human-made lake in the United States, or hike the short trail to Horseshoe Bend overlook, which offers a unique perspective of the Colorado River as it snakes through Glen Canyon in a horseshoe-shaped curve. While you're here, you can't miss a visit to nearby Antelope Canyon, a mesmerizing slot canyon within the Navajo Nation that can only be explored via guided tour.

Outdoor enthusiasts flock to this central Arizona town to enjoy its stunning scenery. Regularly described as one of the most beautiful places in America, Sedona dazzles with its famous red rocks and hiking trails (found in Red Rock State Park), as well as its vortexes. These unique rock formations are said to emit a healing energy from the earth, and it's an experience you have to feel for yourself to believe. The town is also home to numerous spas with Sedona-inspired specialty treatments, which are bound to leave you feeling relaxed and rejuvenated.

arizona scenic tours photos

Vermilion Cliffs National Monument's gorgeous rock formations draw hikers from around the world. Can't-miss landmarks here include The Wave in Coyote Buttes North and White Pocket in the Paria Canyon. Keep in mind, though, that both areas require permits for hiking and camping. These permits – which are given to a limited number of people per day (depending on the region and type of visit) by Arizona's Bureau of Land Management – ensure travelers can enjoy the monument without rubbing elbows with hordes of tourists.

arizona scenic tours photos

This scenic town about 30 miles south of Sedona offers a wealth of attractions to suit every type of traveler. History buffs can spend their time browsing exhibits at Fort Verde State Historic Park and Verde Valley Archaeology Center and Museum, or exploring ancient cliff dwellings at Montezuma Castle National Monument. Meanwhile, daredevils can choose from a variety of thrilling activities, including zip lining, horseback riding and joining a safari tour at the Out of Africa Wildlife Park.

arizona scenic tours photos

Head to Coconino National Forest if you want to be surrounded by nature on your next Arizona getaway. This expansive forest is one of America's most diverse, with nearly 2 million acres of mountain-, lake- and creek-covered land. Hike to the top of the San Francisco Peaks (home to Arizona's tallest mountain, Humphreys Peak) to enjoy phenomenal panoramas, visit Fossil Creek to see one of the state's best waterfalls , or zip down Slide Rock State Park's rock slide for a refreshing dip in a swimming hole. The area is home to all kinds of wildlife, too, so keep an eye out for critters as you explore.

arizona scenic tours photos

Millions of people flock to this destination in Glen Canyon National Recreation Area every year to enjoy the ultimate lake vacation . Popular pursuits at Lake Powell – which features nearly 2,000 miles of winding shoreline– include boating, water skiing, tubing, paddleboarding and wakeboarding. The lake's abundance of game fish also draws anglers in droves. No visit would be complete without hiking around the towering red rock formations that line the lake's shores.

arizona scenic tours photos

Sitting less than 30 miles southwest of Sedona and roughly 110 miles north of Phoenix, this sleepy cliff side community in central Arizona makes for an excellent daytrip destination. Once dubbed "The Wickedest Town in the West," Jerome embraces its history as a former mining town, boasting must-see tourist attractions like the Jerome Historical Society Mine Museum and Jerome State Historic Park, which is home to the striking Douglas Mansion. Other activities include sipping on delicious vino at one of Jerome's wineries and learning about the town's haunted history on a ghost tour.

arizona scenic tours photos

Travel to this national monument in northern Arizona for a glimpse into the state's fascinating past. Once home to a thriving agricultural community, Wupatki was designated a national monument in 1924 as a way to preserve this outstanding archaeological site. Four walking trails are open to the public and lead to seven well-preserved pueblos, prehistoric villages that were occupied 900 years ago. Want to explore off-trail? Join one of the park's ranger-led hikes (offered October through April) for a deeper look into Wupatki National Monument's backcountry, which includes additional pueblo structures and petroglyphs.

arizona scenic tours photos

If you want to spend your next vacation outdoors, head to Petrified Forest National Park. In this more than 200,000-acre park, you'll discover one of the world's largest concentrations of petrified wood, plus rocky cliffs and animal fossils. To make the most of your time here, plan on incorporating several activities into your visit. Popular in-park pursuits include hiking, horseback riding and biking. Don't forget to also leave time for checking out some of the park's historical exhibits, such as those found at the Rainbow Forest Museum and the Painted Desert Inn National Historic Landmark.

arizona scenic tours photos

Nicknamed "The Town Too Tough to Die," this southeastern Arizona destination shows what life was like in the Wild West. On Allen Street, where many of the town's saloons, shops and restaurants are located, you can check out historical landmarks like The Bird Cage Theater and the O.K. Corral Historic Complex, as well as watch costumed actors reenact a famous 1881 gunfight. The town's original courthouse and an Old West graveyard are also still intact, providing you additional opportunities to learn more about Tombstone's earliest pioneers, lawmen and outlaws.

arizona scenic tours photos

Often compared to a high-rise apartment building, Montezuma Castle National Monument features a five-story, 20-room design that's built into the cliffs of central Arizona's Verde Valley. Although the pueblo structures were named after an Aztec emperor, the dwellings were built and formerly inhabited by the Sinagua Indian Tribe. Visitors can learn more about Sinagua culture at the monument's museum, located within the Montezuma Castle Visitor Center, before they trek the area's trails to Montezuma Castle and Montezuma Well. Remember, the monument does not permit entry into the dwellings due to their fragile state.

Surrounded by multiple natural treasures, Flagstaff is more than just a stopover on a road trip to the Grand Canyon. To the north, you'll find the Arizona Snowbowl Ski Resort – which offers everything from ski slopes to hiking trails – nestled 9,500 feet high in the San Francisco Peaks. And to the east sit ancient dwellings at Walnut Canyon National Monument. You should also spend a day exploring the Historic Downtown and Railroad District. The area is located on what is known today as Route 66 and features 20th-century buildings that house numerous restaurants, art galleries and shops.

arizona scenic tours photos

Once a thriving mining town, Bisbee attracts travelers who want to get a taste of the town's past. You'll feel like you've stepped back in time as you stroll up and down Bisbee's streets during a walking tour. You can also learn more about the southern Arizona town's mining days as you explore the Copper Queen Mine and peruse the exhibits at the Bisbee Mining & Historical Museum. If you enjoy learning about the paranormal, sign up for an evening ghost tour of some of Bisbee's historical – and reportedly haunted – buildings.

Prescott appeals to every type of traveler. Nature lovers can explore Prescott National Forest's 900-plus miles of trails on foot, by mountain bike or by horse before venturing to one of its lakes to go boating or fishing. For architecture buffs, there's Prescott's downtown district, which features all kinds of early American structures, including Victorian-era homes and former saloons. Meanwhile, culture hounds can check out several highly regarded museums, such as the Old West art-themed Phippen Museum and the Museum of Indigenous People.

Visit Lake Havasu to enjoy a variety of activities on and by water. The lake is one of Arizona's premier destinations for boating, water skiing, fishing and swimming. Plus, it features hidden coves accessible by kayak and the eye-catching London Bridge, which was relocated here from London in 1971. After spending some time on the lake, head ashore to Lake Havasu City, where you'll find shops, restaurants, campgrounds and hiking trails, among other amenities.

arizona scenic tours photos

As the nation's fifth most-populated city, Arizona's capital is constantly buzzing with activity. Phoenix is lauded for its well-manicured golf courses, its world-class spas and its proximity to Camelback Mountain's hiking trails, but travelers can also visit unique attractions, such as the Musical Instrument Museum and the Desert Botanical Garden. What's more, Phoenix's diverse population gives it a dynamic restaurant scene for foodies to explore. Steakhouse fare and Mexican-inspired cuisine appear on many local restaurant menus, but to sample a bit of everything the area has to offer, sign up for a food tour of Phoenix and nearby Scottsdale.

arizona scenic tours photos

You'll find plenty of ways to stay busy at Lake Mead. The Lake Mead National Recreation Area, which extends across the Arizona-Nevada border, is the first and largest of its kind in America. Its 700 miles of shoreline and 9 trillion gallons of water make it a massive hub for water sports like boating, fishing and water skiing. Plus, Lake Mead is considered one of the world's best freshwater lakes for scuba diving thanks to its range of depths. Can't-miss dive sites on the Arizona side of the lake include the Gypsum Reefs and Kingman Wash.

As you make your way to Sedona, you’ll be treated to gawk-inspiring views of desert spires, whacky-looking rock formations, and several unique landmarks including a cathedral built atop red rocks.

Aside from its unbeatable desert scenery, you’ll also get the chance to make a stop at Tlaquepaque , a historical Spanish village you can explore for a few hours. Moreover, there are several hiking trailheads along the road, which provide a perfect excuse to park your car.

Gorgeous views are guaranteed every mile of the way. A few of the landscapes you’ll get to see include canyons, mountains, and deserts. There are several lookout points scattered around the byway, so plan a few stops along the way to fully take in the views!

Keep in mind that the only community you’ll find along this byway is Tortilla Flat, which boasts a total population of 6 people! It does have a small coffee shop in case you want to stop for a break, though.

Past Tortilla Flat, the road starts getting pretty narrow, so moving past this point is not recommended for large RVs.

Fitzgerald currently serves as Vice Dean of the College of Fine Arts at the University of Arizona and has a multifaceted background as an administrator, as well as an artist and educator in the field of lighting design.

“Deanna brings an extensive background and record of achievement in managing complex budgets, overseeing endowment and scholarship distributions, and leading strategic initiatives,” says Anne D’Alleva, Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs. “This speaks to her ability to navigate the administrative challenges of higher education while remaining focused on the core mission of fostering student success and artistic excellence. Her reputation as a creative, transparent, empathetic, and pragmatic leader aligns well with the School of Fine Arts values and priorities.”

Fitzgerald’s appointment begins August 1, 2024.

Deanna Fitzgerald, newly named as dean of the School of Fine Arts

“I couldn’t be more excited to lead the next chapter of the excellent and important work being done in the School of Fine Arts at the University of Connecticut,” says Fitzgerald. “The determination of the faculty toward student success and the institution’s commitment to the Arts is indisputable. I look forward to getting to know all who are invested and dedicated to UConn SFA, and rallying them toward a bright future in which the Arts are integral to all that UConn does and the communities it serves.”

Academic Experience

Fitzgerald joins UConn School of Fine Arts with 20 years of experience in higher education. Prior to joining the University of Arizona in 2020, she served at the University of Cincinnati College Conservatory as the Special Events Production Manager and the University of Utah’s Marriott Center for Dance as the Resident Lighting Designer and Technical Director and as an assistant professor.

Other academic ranks in Fitzgerald’s career at the University of Arizona include Associate Dean for Academic and Student Success, Director of Graduate Studies, Associate Director of the School of Music, Associate Director for Theatre programs, and Interim Director of the School of Dance.

She earned a bachelor’s degree at Flagler College in Florida and her master’s degree at the University of Cincinnati-Conservatory of Music in Ohio.

Career in the Arts

Fitzgerald has contributed her lighting design skills to numerous domestic and international projects such as the premiere of the Las Vegas adaptation of STOMP Out Loud and tours of the original STOMP production, the Cirque Mechanics: Boom Town tour, Erth’s Dinosaur Zoo, La Boheme, and more.

She is a regular designer for the Rogue Theatre in Arizona and has created designs for the San Francisco Opera’s Merola and Coconut Grove Playhouse’s Young Artist programs. Fitzgerald also created original dance designs for choreographers including Deborah Hay, Ben Levy, and Andy Vaca.

She is also a published author. Her works include the book “The Heart of Light: A Holistic Primer to a Life and Career in Lighting Design,” and the articles “An Introduction to Neurodiversity for the Lighting Designer and Educator,” and “Contemplative Practices for Designers, Technicians and other Theatre Professionals.”

Other Prestigious Roles

Fitzgerald currently serves on the Western Region Exam Committee for United Scenic Artists and as a General Editor for Theatre Design and Technology magazine.

Previously, she has served on the Boards of Directors for the University Resident Theatre Association and the United States Institute of Theatre Technology and fulfilled other roles with notable companies such as the Cincinnati Ballet, the Opera Theatre Music Festival in Lucca, Italy.

Fitzgerald will take over for Interim Dean Alain Frogley, who served in the position for two years. Frogley will return to the position of SFA Associate Dean for Graduate Studies, Research and Creative Practices full-time once Fitzgerald’s appointment begins.

“The entire SFA community is thrilled by the appointment of Deanna Fitzgerald as our new Dean,” says Frogley. “Her multi-faceted administrative experience and inclusive vision will be crucial as we enter a new era for the school and for higher education.”

“Sincerest thanks to Alain Frogley for his dedicated service as Interim Dean of the School,” says D’Alleva. “His leadership has significantly contributed to the advancement and success of the arts at UConn over the past two years.”
