The clue’s in the title. These trips are for families only (including any aunts, uncles or cousins who’d like to come along, of course). As long as you’re travelling with a child under the age of 18, you’re a family in our eyes. Plus, unlike other travel companies, children aged 17 years and younger receive a 10% discount off the price of their trip.

Travel with other families

Travelling the Intrepid way is a bit like travelling with a group of friends. These trips are made up of 3–5 like-minded families, and the kids tend to hit it off straight away, allowing you to enjoy some well-earned R&R. We often find the whole family ends up making friendships with people from all over the world, staying in touch long after the adventure ends.

Small group sizes

Intrepid’s family group sizes are small enough to avoid the crowds and reach some out-of-the-way places, but big enough for a good social mix. Our average group size of 10 allows us to hop aboard local boats, buses or trains, eat at friendly, family-run restaurants and kick back in traditional accommodation and homestays.

Action packed

We know the biggest challenge on a family trip is keeping the kids entertained. So we’ve planned in advance. Nearly all of our hotels feature pools, and each day has a great mix of action-packed adventure and flexible free time. Your local leader can also suggest activities based on your kid’s hobbies or school curriculum.

Our leaders are specially trained to run family adventures, so you’re well taken care of. You can also rest easy knowing we conduct safety assessments on all our activities to meet local standards as well as our own comprehensive safety policy.

With vast swathes of desert dotted in all the colours of the rainbow, India’s sprawling northwestern state showcases India at its most epic. Great forts and marble palaces provoke endless wonder as to its opulent roots, while tiger-filled Ranthambhore National Park renders The Jungle Book all too real.

Mekong Delta, Vietnam

Kyoto, Japan

Kyoto is packed with child-friendly attractions that’ll make for a fun family trip. Start at the Railway Museum, with its full-scale models, or indulge Ninjago fans with a trip to the Samurai and Ninja Museum. There are some peaceful green spaces in Kyoto where you can picnic and play; don’t miss the Imperial Palace Park which has a large playground where kids can run wild. Slip in a visit to a few of the city’s 2,000 temples and shrines for some culture.

Seoul, South Korea

If you’re planning a cultural family getaway, South Korea ’s vibrant capital fits the bill. This concrete jungle is clean and safe, with an accessible public transport system and pay-per-hour play cafes everywhere. Spend some time temple hopping and then let the kids unwind in one of Seoul ’s parks or Lotte World Theme Park. Seoul’s hotels offer stellar facilities for kids, from pools to cooking classes; the Four Seasons even has a Lego-themed lounge.

With a public transportation system that is clean, efficient and easy to use, ample places to eat out and plentiful attractions, Singapore is a firm favourite for families exploring Asia. Phuket, Thailand

Whether you and your family are looking for lively stretches of sand with water sports or somewhere a little quieter and away from the crowds, the beaches of Thailand’s largest island, Phuket , are sure to please. Karon, Kamala and Patong are family favourites, from which you can take boat trips to one of the many nearby islands. Elsewhere, the interactive Phuket Trickeye Museum and the novel Baan Teelanka (Upside Down House) offers many marvellous photo opportunities. Play a round of mini golf at Dino Park, feel the rush at Kathu’s Flying Hanuman treetop adventure course (kid-friendly activities available) and discover aquatic life at Phuket Aquarium.

Sabah, Malaysia

The Malaysian state of Sabah , on the island of Borneo, is a great choice for adventurous families that are looking for somewhere a bit different. A trip to Sabah will require a bit more planning and patience than many other places on this list, and it’s more suited to older kids and teenagers than toddlers. In the state capital of Kota Kinabalu , take a cultural excursion to the Monsopiad Heritage Village to learn more about the area’s past, explore the underwater world with incredible snorkelling at Tunku Abdul Rahman National Park and spot an array of wildlife at Lok Kawi Wildlife Park. The long-nosed proboscis monkeys are normally crowd-pleasers. Nearby, Rumah Terbalik (Upside Down House) is an unusual attraction.

Bali, Indonesia

Bali, one of Indonesia’s most popular islands , attracts many people throughout the year. If you want a change from the more popular, and busier beach resorts , like Kuta and Sanur, check out pretty Nusa Dua, where older children might like to try their hand at surfing. While in the area, visit The Pirates Bay to let your kids’ imaginations run free and take a pirate-themed dinner cruise. There are a couple of great water parks in Bali as well, including Waterbom Bali Park and Splash Water Park, plus volcanic mountains, rice terraces, waterfalls and wildlife-rich forests to explore. Thrill-seeking families should add Bali Treetop Adventure Park to their itinerary.

Phu Quoc, Vietnam

The island of Phu Quoc is a great place for families looking for some laidback beach time in Vietnam . Many spend days sunbathing, swimming and playing on the numerous beaches. Long Beach is the most popular, and where you’ll find the greatest selection of amenities and facilities, while other top beaches include Bai Thom, Bai Sao and Vung Bao. Boat trips and snorkelling are fun and, for something a bit different, how about an evening of squid fishing? The Coi Nguon Museum provides an educational experience, as is a visit to one of the island’s famous fish-sauce factories and pearl farms. The Ganh Dau Trail offers great hiking and the Suoi Tranh waterfall is a scenic sight.

Tokyo, Japan

Colourful and busy, Tokyo is a wonderland for kids and adults. There are theme parks galore – with something for all ages. Favourites include Hanayashiki, which is believed to be the oldest amusement park in Japan; Tokyo Disneyland; DisneySea, combining all your favourite characters and water-based attractions; and the cute and kitsch world of Hello Kitty at Sanrio Puroland. Kids will love watching creatures from across the world at Ueno Zoo, getting creative at Legoland Discovery Center and walking with dinosaurs in Kodomo no Mori Park. There are tonnes of fun educational experiences in Tokyo, too, including the National Museum of Nature and Science, the Tokyo National Museum, and the National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation.

Taipei, Taiwan

Wide streets, great transportation and many attractions make Taipei a great place to explore as a family. Many of Taipei’s major cultural sites are interesting for everyone, like the Chiang Kai-shek and Sun Yat-sen Memorial Halls, the Longshan Temple and the National Palace Museum. Get up close with pandas at Taipei Zoo, soak in the natural hot spring of Beitou and spend an evening shopping and eating at the bustling Shilin Night Market. A hike along the Nangang District Hiking Trail up Elephant Mountain is a great way to burn off excess energy, while Taipei Children’s Amusement Park has an assortment of rides and play areas and the popular Leofoo Village Theme Park – complete with rides, shows, animals and a water park – is an easy day-trip from Taipei.

Shanghai, China

Tick off theme parks, cultural sites, museums and shopping centres in Shanghai , one of China ’s most modern cities. There are many child-friendly places to stay and finding something tasty to eat won’t be a problem; try the themed restaurants for unusual dining experiences. Shanghai Disneyland often tops the list of must-do things in Shanghai , as does the Dino Beach Water Park, Shanghai Wild Animal Park and Shanghai Zoo. Shanghai Ocean Aquarium also boasts the longest underwater tunnel in the world. Watch your kids’ faces light up as you hop on the rail car that travels through the Bund Sightseeing Tunnel, and soak up the views from the observation deck of the iconic Oriental Pearl Tower.

Amman, Jordan

As a fairly small country in the Middle East, Jordan isn’t generally top of mind when thinking about where to take the family. But the capital, Amman , is a must-visit for its history, culture and ancient sites. Rent a car (with a private driver) or book a tour from a central base; almost everywhere can be reached from the capital on a day trip. Immerse your kids in a new culture with a stroll along Amman’s Rainbow Street and a visit to the lively souks . Other highlights of the capital include The Children’s Museum, with many hands-on activities; the lush King Hussein Gardens, where kids can burn off excess energy; the open-air museum of Jabal Al-Qalaa; and the Abu Darwish Mosque. The Roman ruins of Jerash are a short drive from Amman .

Japan is an outstanding family destination for many of the same reasons we love Japan in general.

It’s Safe and Convenient

Japan is perhaps the safest large country in the world, making the US and Europe look quite dangerous in comparison.

It’s also surprisingly easy to get around, even if you don’t speak the Japanese language .

Another surprise highlight for so many travelers is how beautifully and efficiently things tend to work in Japan:

• Japanese trains are spotless and depart and arrive on time
• Japanese customer service is wonderful, and people are astoundingly helpful
• And, of course, your kids (and you) will love riding the shinkansen (bullet train)

1. Ride the World-famous Shinkansen

For most kids, riding the bullet train is a “must,” and fortunately for parents, it’s also usually the most convenient way to travel from city to city.

The shinkansen is not only fast and efficient, but it’s also an absolute pleasure to ride. Make sure to pick up an ekiben (train station bento box) , as eating and drinking on the train is a key part of the experience!

2. Visit the Snow Monkeys in Nagano Prefecture

Watching the snowy faces of wild Japanese macaques peer through the steam from warm onsen pools in Jigokudani Yaen-Koen (Snow Monkey Park) is one of the highlights of traveling to Japan in winter .

Located in the Japanese Alps of Nagano prefecture, we recommend spending at least one or two nights in the region to be able to visit the famous monkeys without rushing.

3. Attend a Sumo Basho

Sumo is perhaps Japan’s best-known yet enigmatic sport. If your schedule allows, attend an official sumo basho (tournament). They occur six times a year, beginning in January and then every other month through November.

If your dates don’t align with a basho , by all means, try and attend a morning practice at a sumo-beya, where wrestlers both live and train.

4. Take a Taiko Drumming Class

A hands-on taiko drumming class offers the best of both worlds: engage in a centuries-old cultural practice and expend some serious energy in the process. Take a family class and learn why it’s such a significant element of folk culture and matsuri (festivals) across Japan.

5. Mingle with Deer in Nara or Miyajima

There are two destinations worth checking out if you’d like to spend some time with Japan’s native sika (deer).

The first is Nara Park in the city of Nara , less than an hour away from both Kyoto and Osaka. Purchase some shika senbei (deer crackers) from the nearby stalls and see how quickly you can make a gang of four-legged friends.

If Hiroshima is on your itinerary, make sure to pay a visit to nearby Miyajima Island, home to more than a thousand tame sika coexisting with island residents.

6. Spend the Night at a Buddhist Temple

Deep in Wakayama Prefecture, south of Kyoto, the mountaintop community of Mount Koya is home to dozens of temples where you can stay overnight in a shukubo (temple lodging).

While these traditional accommodations are quite rustic and spartan, you’ll have the chance to interact with resident monks and enjoy Buddhist vegetarian cuisine during your stay.

7. Explore the Whimsical Ghibli Museum in Tokyo

Dive into the imaginative world of Studio Ghibli and iconic director Hayao Miyazaki, best known for films including “Spirited Away” and “My Neighbor Totoro.” At the Ghibli Museum , you can immerse yourself in the magical exhibitions dedicated to the studio’s productions.

8. Experience World-Class Aquariums in Osaka and Okinawa

At Kaiyukan Aquarium in Osaka , the ecosystems of the Pacific Rim regions are brought to life. You can interact with creatures in the touch pool and experience the mystical night aquarium experience where technicolor sea creatures drift by under subdued lighting.

The Churaumi Aquarium in Okinawa offers a glimpse into the waters, ecology, and life surrounding the island. Experience enormous whale sharks, manta rays, and other large species in the aquarium’s massive tanks.

9. Climb Mount Fuji

Hiking up Mount Fuji is a terrific challenge for active families. This adventure is best undertaken during the official climbing season, which typically begins in early July and ends in early to mid-September.

If summiting Fujisan sounds too daunting, but you’d like to plan for a day in nature, consider one of the more accessible day hikes near Tokyo (Kyoto is also home to many excellent day hikes).

10. Walk Through Arashiyama’s Bamboo Forest

Located on the western outskirts of Kyoto, the picturesque Arashiyama fills up with travelers for good reason. With its meandering river and lovely mountains, it’s one of the city’s most scenic districts, and at its heart is the famously photogenic bamboo forest.

Expect crowds, though even when it’s filled with admirers, it can offer an ethereal experience. You’ll want to spend at least a half-day (or longer) exploring this wonderful corner of Kyoto.

11. Immerse Yourself in teamLab’s Digital Art Installations

The digital art collective known as teamLab has taken the world by storm. There’s no better place to experience their wondrous digital worlds than Tokyo, where teamLab offers a rotating mix of temporary and semi-permanent exhibits.

12. Experience Cosplay

If you want to take dress-up to the next level, Japan is the place. Whether you’re dressing up as Pikachu to sing karaoke or learning how to properly wear a formal kimono, both whimsical and culturally fascinating options abound.

13. Play a Traditional Japanese Instrument

Along with taiko (see above), there are plenty of other wagakki (traditional Japanese instruments) you can try your hand at while exploring Japan. Popular options for single-day lessons include the stringed shamisen and koto and the shakuhachi flute.

14. Explore a Medieval Japanese Castle

European castles have nothing on their Japanese counterparts: turrets and towers were built of medieval materials like wood and stone, and moats protected the expansive grounds. You can almost hear the armies of samurai as they descend on the fortresses.

While some castles (like Osaka Castle) look nice on the outside, for a deeper experience, we recommend visiting the beautifully preserved castles of Himeji, Hikone, or Matsumoto to get a real glimpse of life as it was in feudal Japan.

15. Ski or Snowboard in Japan’s Legendary Powder

Families with a love of winter sports can build an itinerary around skiing or snowboarding in one of Japan’s famed ski areas.

Hokkaido, the northernmost island, is a winter wonderland renowned for its abundant snowfall and premium powder, while Tohoku and the Japanese Alps also offer an array of worthwhile winter resorts.

16. Soak in Akihabara’s Neon, Arcades, Electronics

Gamers of all ages can lose themselves in the five-story arcades of Akihabara in Tokyo, each floor featuring a different genre and highlighting the most iconic titles ever produced. Beyond the games, Akihabara is also a paradise for electronics lovers.

17. Cycle Across the Shimanami Kaido

For an escapade on two wheels, pedal across the Shimanami Kaido , Japan’s most popular cycling route and a bucket list ride for cyclists worldwide.

While traversing the 47-mile island-hopping stretch between Onomichi and Imabari, you’ll pass through quaint Japanese fishing villages where you can stop and refuel with local delicacies, including fresh grilled seafood and mandarin gelato.

18. Spend the Day at a Japanese Theme Park

If high-adrenaline rides and rollercoasters are more your speed, Japan has world-class amusement parks, ranging from the classically whimsical to a thrill-seeker’s nirvana.

Some of Japan’s best-known theme parks include Tokyo Disneyland, DisneySea, Universal Studios Japan, Sanrio Puroland, and Fuji-Q Highland.

19. Take a Village-to-village Hike Through the Japanese Countryside

Walking along historic trails is an unforgettable way to immerse yourself in the countryside and get a taste of old Japan.

The Nakasendo Road was used by samurai to travel between Tokyo and Kyoto during the Edo period. Even if you’re not up for a multi-day hike, it’s possible to walk along a short part of the road in as short as a half-day, spending time in the meticulously preserved village of Tsumago.

The remote Kumano Kodo is best experienced as a multi-day hike through the UNESCO-recognized region of Kumano, with its abundance of historical and spiritual sites. You’ll pass through charming villages and beautiful landscapes, stopping to enjoy fantastic onsen and local cuisine.

20. Attend a Japanese Matsuri

24. Stay at a Traditional Ryokan in the Countryside

Staying at a traditional ryokan (Japanese-style inn) for a night or two is a wonderful experience for adventurous families.

Japanese families typically all share one room together when staying at a ryokan, though this is not required. When you check in, you’ll leave your shoes at the entrance, and once in your room, you’ll shed your street clothes in favor of yukata robes.

Highlights of a ryokan stay include sipping tea, soaking in onsen , and incredible multi-course meals. This is a relaxing and culturally fascinating experience for many families, but if your family likes to move fast, then one night is probably more than enough!

25. Learn to Make Sushi or Japanese Comfort Food

Whether you love to cook or simply want a fun activity to keep your kids engaged (and well fed), private cooking classes are a great way to spend a few hours.

Options range from learning to prepare sushi with a master chef to more informal home cooking classes with friendly locals.

Family Travel in Japan: Other Logistical Considerations

Here are a couple of other things families should keep in mind when planning a visit to Japan.

Strollers and Car Seats and Diapers, Oh My!

Since there is limited space for large items on trains, we typically recommend traveling with a compact folding stroller.

This will prove more convenient not only on long-distance trains but also on public transit, in taxis, and also when walking through narrow streets or entering small shops and restaurants.

Fortunately, Japan’s roads and sidewalks tend to be wonderfully maintained, which helps make walking around with a stroller a breeze.

Whether or not to travel with a car seat is up to you. Typically, taxis in Japan do not require children to ride in car seats, though for longer transfers (for example, airport transfers), it’s worth asking your transport provider if they can provide a car seat or not.

As for supplies, such as diapers? We usually suggest bringing a good supply to at least get you started, as it’s not always easy to find the exact supplies you will need for your baby once on the ground.

One “trick” we recommend is to make use of Japan’s excellent luggage forwarding services. This way, you can bring one suitcase dedicated to baby supplies without having to carry it everywhere.

Are There Child Discounts in Japan?

In short, yes, though only to a point.

For example, at many accommodations, children do pay less (depending on their ages at the time of travel), but it’s not always the case at all hotels or ryokans.

As for transport, children aged 11 and under do pay less for trains and bullet trains, but those 12 and over pay the full adult fare. Tours and experiences tend to be similar, though it varies by service.

Apart from accommodations, tours, and transport, you will almost certainly end up spending less on the ground when it comes to meals, for example (learn more about how much things cost in Japan ).

What's special: Bali has an exciting mix of nature and culture. It's a lone Hindu-majority island in Muslim-majority Indonesia, and its culture has developed in unique and interesting ways. The south coast, with its white sand and greater development, is most popular, but the west coast offers a simpler and less crowded alternative, with black sands and colorful underwater life. Older kids will also enjoy the culture of Ubud, with its ornate Hindu temples, Monkey Forest and cultural performances.

Don't miss: A cycle tour through the bright green terraced rice fields and villages of Ubud; snorkeling off the uncrowded west coast; visiting the Monkey Forest in Ubud.

What's special: Thailand has an experience ( and an island ) for every type of traveler, but families would do well to head to Koh Samui . It's Thailand's second largest island, so there's plenty of variety here, with both pristine beaches for relaxing and water sports, and dense forest for hiking and other jungle activities. Avoid Koh Samui from November to January, as this is the wet season.

Why it makes sense for families: Koh Samui is more upmarket than some other popular Thai destinations, meaning the vibe is a bit more suitable for kids than places with a wilder party scene. While Koh Samui is certainly not an off-the-beaten-path or undiscovered destination, the well-developed facilities mean that parents don't need to worry about keeping their kids safe or entertained.

Don't miss: Snorkeling and kayaking at the Ang Thong Marine National Park; zip-lining through the forest at Samui Canopy Adventures; a day in the calm clear waters of Thong Takhian Beach (otherwise known as Silver Beach).

How to get there: The nearest international airport to Kyoto is the Kansai Airport, one of the busiest airports in Japan. Airlines that fly there include Delta Airlines, Hawaiian Airlines, Air Canada, British Airways and United Airlines.

What's special: Kyoto , in the western part of Japan's main Honshu island, offers some of Japan's finest cultural attractions. Because it was spared damage in World War II, there are more ancient temples here than in other Japanese cities. While it is still a big, modern, developed city in many ways, there are also endless peaceful parks, forests, gardens and other delightful and relaxing spots. It's a year-round destination, as each season offers something different, but it can be unpleasantly hot and humid in the summer (June – August) and bitterly cold in the winter (November – February).

Why it makes sense for families: Japan in general is a comfortable place to travel with kids as everything is very orderly, clean and efficient, and there are well-maintained public parks and amusements of all kinds. Kyoto is especially interesting for older kids who would be intrigued by stories of samurai, ninjas, geisha and emperors, but younger kids would also enjoy the green spaces. There are many kid-friendly museums and attractions, such as the Kyoto Railway Museum, the City Zoo and the Samurai and Ninja Museum.

Don't miss: The Golden Temple (locally called Kinkaku-ji); the Gion entertainment district, where you can still see real geisha decked in their finery; the chilled out Arashiyama District, where you can take a rickshaw ride through bamboo groves and along the riverside.

What's special: The capital of Taiwan is a less "obvious" East Asian destination than, say, Tokyo or Hong Kong, but that's a good reason to go to Taipei . There are fewer tourists, yet the tourist infrastructure and attractions are really good. Plus, it's affordable. The Taipei 101 Tower was the tallest building in the world when it opened in 2004 (it's now the 10th), and is still one of the most distinctive-looking skyscrapers in the world (think stalk-of-bamboo meets Chinese pagodas meets stacked takeout boxes!). The summer is very hot and humid and can be uncomfortable, but other times of year are more pleasant. Plus, Taiwan is an underrated island destination with beautiful forests, mountains, beaches and interesting indigenous cultures, if you want to escape the city.

Why it makes sense for families: While Taipei is a big, bustling Asian city, it's also very kid friendly. Essential facilities like baby changing tables are easy to find, and there are parks and green spaces all around. The public transit is good, and there are hop-on hop-off bus services that make sightseeing a breeze. Plus, there are a wealth of attractions that are just as fun for adults as they are for kids, so parents don't have to sacrifice their own needs and interests!

Don't miss: The Taipei Zoo is one of the largest in Asia and has a mini train as well as a cute panda cub; the observation deck at Taipei 101; the Taipei Night Markets, but go early (before 7pm) to beat the crowds.

Where to stay: The Grand Hyatt Taipei (Category 4, from 15k Hyatt points) is one of the largest hotels in the city, with 865 rooms. Le Meridien Taipei has a heated indoor pool (not necessary in the summer, but a nice touch at other times of year). Alternatively, Taipei has a lot of good value midrange hotels, which make a family trip here quite affordable.

Sihanoukville, Cambodia

How to get there: Sihanoukville Airport is Cambodia's third largest, but only a limited number of international airlines fly there, Air Asia among them. Many visitors will enter Cambodia through the capital city instead, at Phnom Penh Airport. Major airlines that fly there include Emirates, Qatar Airways, Thai Airways, Air Asia and Korean Air.

What's special: While neighboring Thailand gets most of the attention from beach lovers, Cambodia's western coast is just as stunning without such crowds. Sihanoukville is a convenient jumping-off point for less developed beaches in the area, including numerous small islands. The weather is warm year-round, but there is more rain between May and November.

Why it makes sense for families: Although Sihanoukville and some islands have a growing party scene, the area in general is more low-key than many of its Thai counterparts. It's an ideal destination for families looking for somewhere a bit more off-circuit, especially if you stay out of Sihanoukville city. On some offshore islands you can have whole stretches of undeveloped sand all to yourself. Facilities can be few and far between, however.

Don't miss: Chilling out on white-sand Otres Beach or Ochheuteal Beach; taking a small boat out to one of the islands, such as idyllic Koh Ta Kiev.

Where to stay: Several points-accepting high-end hotels are currently under construction in Sihanoukville (Marriott, Le Meridien and InterContinental), so watch this space. Alternatively, some of the beach 'shacks' along pretty Otres Beach are way more developed than they sound, and only steps from the beach, so are a good option for family travelers on a budget.

Penang, Malaysia

How to get there: Penang Airport is served by major international airlines such as SilkAir, Malaysia Airlines, Qatar Airways and Air Asia. Alternatively, Penang is a short domestic flight from Kuala Lumpur, which is a major air hub in Southeast Asia.

What's special: Colorful Penang — and the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Georgetown area in particular — is famous for its delicious food, extensive street art and mix of Chinese and Malay cultures. It offers a wealth of cultural and natural attractions, from ornately decorated Chinese temples to hiking trails through the forest, so should appeal to all kinds of families. Malaysia has a tropical climate, with a wet monsoon that runs between May and October.

Why it makes sense for families: Penang is a great introduction to Asia for kids. It's exciting without being overwhelming. The food is famous as among the best in Malaysia, and even picky eaters should find some tropical fruit or noodle dishes to enjoy. There are many food courts and (hygienic) street-side food stalls, so everyone in the family can try something that appeals to them. There is street art everywhere in Georgetown, and older kids can enjoy searching for it down back alleys.

Don't miss: The Tropical Spice Garden north of Georgetown; the Clan Jetties, houses on stilts out over the water; Batu Ferringhi Beach.

Where to stay: When choosing a place to stay in Penang, it's important to realize that atmospheric Georgetown is only one area of Penang. Georgetown has many budget and boutique accommodations, but few international chains. For these, it's necessary to stay in other parts of the city or around the beach areas. Yuji did an amazing job of ensuring a smooth trip, while being very flexible to the desires of the group. He planned beautifully and gave us the skills and confidence to navigate on our own for our free time. He kept the group from frittering away time and shared insights into history and culture for the many highlights. Had we tried to do this trip on our own, we would optimistically have been able to see half as much and would have entirely missed some very memorable experiences, like Hakone. We did the family tour and would highly recommend for families with kids 9-16.

Splendours of Japan (9 Days)

We have just returned from 9 day tour. Our tour director Naggi was great. She did everything to accommodate all our needs. The locations and the hotels themselves were very good. It is true that the hotel in Nagano was not on the same level but we were brought in at the end of the very long day so nobody had any desire to leave the hotel for any exploration and we got an excellent opportunity to change into kimonos, experience Japanese onsen and had the great buffet dinner. My greatest complaint is with Trafalgar's itinerary. For the first day in the itinerary it says 'see the Tokyo skytree' but it should say " mention the Tokyo skytree". "5th station" on mount Fuji - none though there were weather problems. The worst part though was that we drove to the Goykayama in anticipation of washi paper demonstration but instead were had 30 minutes in Mr. Murakami house for the very mediocre presentation, drove an 1.5 hour to Kanazawa and then told that by the way tomorrow we should drive back to Goykayama to watch washi paper demonstration. How can any company plan such things?! If for whatever reason washi demonstration could not be done on the day of the tour they should have replaced it with for example pottery demonstration which Kanazawa is famous for. As the result when the group came back after 3 hour roundtrip it started raining and there was no time to enjoy one of the real highlight of the tour - Kenroku-en garden. The itinerary in Tokyo is very poor. They could have done Edo Museum, Asakusa (greatly overrated) and Imperial Palace (worth 40 minutes) in one day, leave out sushi preparation as optional but on the second day organize the day trip to Nikko. Moreover Nijo castle is the real highlight in Kyoto (not planned) while overcrowded Fukushima Inari (planned) is curious at best. Bottom line: the itinerary deserves C+ at best.

12-Day Japan Family Adventure through Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka and Beyond

Great trip Our guide, Juno was amazing. The weather was super hot but he managed to keep us comfortable as we moved very quickly on public transport from site to site. Juno always had good well-priced meal suggestions and was super organized and cheerful. The hotels were very good or better. The hotel in Tokyo was noisy because it was near a hospital. A lightweight suitcase, with excellent wheels would be my suggestion for luggage versus a duffle bag Hiroshima was the most moving part of the trip Hakone was the most fun and I wish we could have stayed a bit longer. We stayed a few extra days to go to Disneyland, and I would recommend staying near Disney property versus downtown Tokyo. We could’ve used a midday break and then return to the park for the evening fireworks but it was super hot and we pooped out before closing.

I worked with Cathy Hou of Odynovo to develop a private tour of Japan for me and my adult granddaughter. She was amazing to work with and developed the perfect itinerary based on my input. We started in Tokyo and ended in Kyoto. Every aspect of the tour exceeded my expectations. Our guides spoke perfect English, were extremely knowledgeable, and paid attention to every detail. In no time we felt like we were traveling with friends who took care of our every need. The drivers were careful and helpful. Their flexibility was a plus. The sites, hotels and restaurants were absolutely wonderful. I can't wait to take another trip with this wonderful company and would recommend them without reservation.

9D Splendid Japan with Nagoya (private 3 star hotel rooms)

I'm still unsure as to why this is called a 10 Day Tour. We had a excellent guide for 6 of the 10 days, and we found out we were together with those with a 7 day tour, with free time in Tokyo for the remaining 3 days in which you have to get around yourself with no guide. The excursions to Osaka, Hiroshima, Kyoto and Tokyo are not included in the tour price - otherwise you have to travel around yourself. The hotels in Osaka and Tokyo are booked out of the city centres and take about 40 - 50 minutes to travel (if you're flying out of Tokyo, I'd suggest organising from Haneda since it's on the direct train line). I would suggest organising an IC card (Suica for arriving in Tokyo or Icoca for Osaka) on arrival, otherwise buying tickets to explore yourself is difficult. If I had the time again, I would have booked the shorter tour of 7 days and organise my own accommodation for the remainder of the trip, seeing as it would be better value. The sites of interest are a bit rushed as well, and are usually tourist hotshots which can get very crowded. You don't get much time in Osaka, which is disappointing, seeing as there are interesting areas such as Sakai (one of three notable places for knives - not Kappabashi Street!) and Tennoji for parks and zoos. It's either going around Osaka or going to Hiroshima on a day excursion. Our guide, Andre, was amazing and knowledgeable about the areas we visited. He was mindful of our group - about 35 people in total (several families with young children, older people). He made sure to introduce the solo travellers so we could make travel companions. He recommended regional food and activities, and made the optional tours worthwhile and comfortable. Overall, I enjoyed the time with the group, but would look at the shorter Stunning Tours instead for better value. The kicker is that this tour went on sale soon after, which was dramatically reduced.

The service provided by Intertrips is very professional and considerable. It was an amazing experience. Enjoy this tour so much and I will definitely come back and recommend this tour to my friends and family.

Our guide for Beijing was super knowledgeable and experienced and able to help us to achieve as much as we wanted within the time given. We had a fun time guided by him as he is also super humorous and you can see how he interacts with the vendors and people whom he comes by. Thank you for a very enjoyable time in Beijing and accommodating to all our needs!

Our China Highlight guide. Michael, was attentive, thoughtful and knowledgeable. He narrated many interesting historical events about Chengdu while touring around the city and having afternoon tea with us. He was thoughtful to provide us with snacks during long hikes at Leshan or walks around the city.

She was very flexible and added extra time when we needed it and we felt extremely well taken care of. She also chose the best restaurants for us,

Our tour guide Helen, was excellent, she was very kind, professional and passionate for her work and she also loves Pandas! She will take you to take the best panda photos and to know more about Chengdu city. Our tour was great, she took us to all our destinations always with the best spots: Temples, pagodas, famous streets, theaters, pandas...you name it! Everything was great.

He picked up our pre-booked boat/other excursions tickets so we were able to avoid all the long lines and chaos. He is knowledgeable of the places we visited, courteous, fun to travel with and well-versed in Chinese classics.

Tom is the guide that will take you to where no other guide will. We pushed for the experience and Tom and the team delivered more than what we could have ever asked for. His English speaking ability and his Chinese history knowledge is second to none.

The three-day festival celebrates the completion of the fasting month of Ramadan by Muslims across the world.

As a new moon was not sighted on Monday evening after Maghrib prayers, Muslims in Saudi Arabia and neighbouring countries will fast one more day, completing 30 days of Ramadan. The first day of Eid will then be celebrated on Wednesday, April 10.

The first day of Eid al-Fitr is determined by the sighting of the crescent moon marking the start of the month of Shawwal, the 10th month of the Islamic (Hijri) calendar.

How do Muslims celebrate Eid?

Each country has traditional desserts and sweets that are prepared before Eid or on the morning of the first day.

Children, dressed in new clothes, are offered gifts and money to celebrate the joyous occasion.

Girls and women in many countries decorate their hands with henna. The celebration for Eid begins the night before as women gather in neighbourhoods and large family gatherings for the application of henna.

In some countries, families visit graveyards to offer their respects to departed family members right after the morning prayers.

It is common for Muslim-majority countries to decorate their cities with lights and hold festivities to commemorate the end of the fasting month.

Eid amid the onslaught in Gaza

For some 2.3 million Palestinians in Gaza this Eid, this will be the first Muslim religious holiday after more than 33,000 people have been killed in Israeli attacks. With little food aid, and very limited water, Gaza’s Eid al-Fitr will be mired in destruction amid the continuing attacks.

What are common Eid greetings?

The most popular greeting is “Eid Mubarak” (Blessed Eid) or “Eid sa’id” (Happy Eid). Eid greetings also vary depending on the country and language.
