Lalbagh is one of the oldest botanical gardens in India and is also a major tourist attraction in South India. Located in South Bengaluru, the Lalbagh Botanical Garden is not only one of the largest botanical gardens in India, but also the first of its kind, with planned routes, glasshouses and ornamental flowers growing throughout the property. The garden itself is spread over an area of 240 acres and its construction was commissioned by the famous ruler Hyder Ali. It was finally completed by his son- Tipu Sultan- who designed the gardens keeping in mind the beautiful gardens of Sira in Tumkur District in Karnataka.Lalbagh is home to exotic flowers that were imported by the Sultan from countries like France, Persia, Arabia, Afghanistan, etc. Therefore, flowers that were previously never seen in India were first witnessed in this historical garden. Trees that were imported by Tipu Sultan from all over the world can still be found growing here.Apart from the exotic trees, visitors can also catch sight of some rare birds such as the Myna, pond heron, purple moorhen, parakeets, Brahminy kites, the common egret and much more. Apart from the stunning flora and fauna of the Lalbagh Botanical Garden, it has another striking attraction, which is the Lalbagh rock. This rock, which is said to be over 3000 years old, is one of the oldest rocks in the world and can be found in the center of the garden.

Brigade Road

There is a long stretch of standalone shops, individual retailers, and outlet selling almost everything you need making it one the best Bangalore sightseeing. This commercial hubs houses myriads of global brand outlets as well and it has been a hub for celebrating New Year in the almost every year.

Bangalore Palace

In the technology-driven, futuristic Silicon Valley of India, monuments of historical significance boasting of a glorious past are also abundant. The historical heritage of the city is so magnificent and eminent that it rises to prominence on its own. One such landmark is the Tudor style Bangalore Palace. The Palace is a perfect representation of the lavishness and splendour with which India's most resilient dynasties ruled. Famous for its opulent architecture and amusement activities, the Palace is visited by several visitors every day. The colossal Palace boasts of massive courtyards, bright interiors, kingly grounds, splendid spiral staircases, stately towers and a luscious garden in a proud display of posh regality.Anyone who admires classic architecture and artistry would be delighted to experience it first hand at this Palace. It also houses an amusement park in its enclave to the delight of many younger visitors. Having been a private residence to the Wodeyar family, Bangalore palace offers a linear perspective into the royal life of the forepassed era. It is plush with a vibrant and varied collection of ancient royal artefacts, paraphernalia, hunting trophies and family photos. The Palace houses some of the most famous paintings of the 19th Century, including the works of one of India's most celebrated artists Raja Ravi Verma. The Palace grounds very often become venues for concerts and festivals. World-renowned artists like Enrique and Guns N' Roses have graced the palace grounds with their talent and presence. The Palace hence combines the richness and luxury of royal history with the vivacious and exuberant demeanour of the youth. Bangalore Palace HistoryOriginally a property of Reverend J Garrett, the principal of a school in the cantonment town at that time, the area where the Palace is now located was purchased from him by the British Guardians of Maharaja Chamarajendra Wadiyar for 40,000 rupees. The construction of the palace began in the year 1874. Mr John Cameron of Lalbagh was assigned the task of landscaping Palace along with its surroundings. The complete construction of the palace was completed in the year, 1878.The Palace saw many additions and modifications in its architecture in subsequent years. Maharaja Jayachamaraja Wadiyar added a few portions like the twin external staircase, the platform for musicians etc. outside the Durbar Hall. In 1970, HH Jayachamarajendra Wodeyar transferred ownership of the property to two companies, Chamundi Hotels and Shree Venkateshwara Real Estate Enterprises. However, this transaction was later shown to be fraudulent. A legal battle followed between this deal and Jayachamarajendra's son, Srikanta Datta. The five sisters of Srikanta Datta are now in possession of sections of the 28 acres of the Palace. In the year 1990 Srikant Datta finally compromised with the Chamaraju group and got back his part of the property including the main Palace except for 45 acres that the Chamaraju group still retains. Architecture:The Palace showcases exquisite wooden interiors surrounded by pristine walls. The Palace is enclosed within beautiful gardens. The architecture is a medley of Tudor style and Scottish style and has gothic undertones. A lot of physical artefacts inside are of British origin. It is said that the architecture of this building is inspired by that of the Windsor Castle and other architectural marvels of England and Normandy. The most prominent features of the Palace like the two-level granite structure of the fortified towers and turreted parapets take direct inspiration from the Tudor building styles. The entrance is decorated with grand Roman arches. The exterior of the building is covered in eccentric shapes and angles. The exterior walls are of a blushing cinnabar shade that gives the building a quaint Victorian vibe. The floor of the open courtyard of the Palace is adorned with granite seats covered with azure ceramic tiles. The ground floor also contains a beautifully decorated ballroom. The first floor of the Palace has a distinct chamber known as the Durbar Hall attached to an ornate staircase. This hall is famous for the enormous elephant head that is mounted in it and its gothic style tinted glass windows.

The BEST places to visit in Bangalore with kids

Your ultimate guide for things to do in Bangalore with kids from a family who spent a year living there

Bangalore is often overlooked by travellers visiting India with kids as it lacks the world-class, wow-factor sights of some other Indian cities. Those that do visit are often only stopping in to savour their creature comforts (think Marmite from Spar supermarket and purchasing clean knickers from M&S) before getting back on the road and heading north to Hampi or west to Mysore , Kochi or Goa .

However, with its green open spaces, gated playgrounds and soft-play, there are some great places to visit in Bangalore for kids. Plus, due to its higher altitude, Bangalore enjoys a more benevolent climate; a cool respite if travelling during the warmer months (although it can still get uncomfortably hot between April and June).

Bangalore was our home for a year. So I thought I should share our favourite things to do in Bangalore with kids.

1. Lalbagh Botanical Gardens

Open daily from 6 AM to 7 PM. Entry is free during early morning and late evening (6 to 9 AM and 6 to 7 PM). A nominal fee applies during the day time. Click here for location

Lalbagh Bangalore with kids

Start at the West Gate and stroll along the lakeside path, look for monkeys and munch on sweetcorn from one of the numerous food vendors. It’s a welcome novelty to enjoy such a beautiful green space in this congested city and allow the kids to run free away from the traffic. Follow the path to the other side of the gardens, find the Peninsular Gneiss and take the short climb to the top for great views of the city skyline, a small temple and drinks stall.

2. Big Bull Temple and Bugle Park

Big Bull Temple is open 6am-8pm every day. Bugle Park is closed after 10am and does not open until 4pm. Click here for location

Big Bull Temple, Bangalore with kids

Walk underneath the imposing big bull horns and climb the steps to the Big Bull Temple, containing a giant granite sculpture of the sacred animal, adorned in flowers. A few rupees secures a blessing from the priest and remember to place your hand on the bull’s hoof for good luck. On exiting, follow the steps to the right into Bugle Park and let the kids release some energy by climbing over boulders and mixing with the local kids at the playground.

3. Iskcon Temple

Open 7.15am-1pm and 4.15-8.20pm Mon to Fri, 7.15am-8.30pm Sat, Sun and Public Holidays Click here for location

Packing essentials for Mums

Inaugurated in 1997, this is one of the largest Iskcon temples in the world. It may look like a big wedding cake but it has the substance to match the style. Climb the steps to marvel at the lavish decorations and stop to observe the fascinating ceremonies taking place, as the Hare Krishna chant provides a looping soundtrack to your visit.

There is a fantastic food market as you leave the main temple so time your arrival for lunch. There are also lots of souvenir stalls. We treated our boys to a Hare Krishna flute. As with most temples, make sure your legs and shoulders are covered and leave the camera at home; photography is strictly prohibited.

4. Afternoon Tea at the Taj West End

Tea at the Taj West End, Bangalore with kids

An oasis hidden amongst the chaos and noise of central Bangalore, the luxurious Taj West End has been providing a sanctuary for locals and travellers alike since 1887. Head to Machan , their multi-cuisine restaurant, and if it’s not too hot, choose a table on the lawn. Being from the UK, it was an absolute treat to enjoy perfect tea from a teapot, whilst the boys ran barefoot around the manicured lawn. We also indulged in some scrummy cupcakes. Once you’re all tea-d out, explore the lush gardens. Ask a member of staff to show you the way.

5. Cubbon Park

Cubbon Park is open daily 6am to 6pm Click here for location

Cubbon Park, Bangalore with kids

Said to be the (overworked) ‘lungs’ of the city, this sprawling 120-hectare park in central Bangalore is where the kids can come to collect sticks, scramble over boulders, climb trees and run free. Combining this with a visit to Visvesvaraya Industrial and Technical Museum makes for a good afternoon (see below). There is also a small fair-ground ( Jawahar Bal Bhavan ) on the north-eastern edge of the park.

7. Visvesvaraya Industrial and Technical Museum

Rs85, open 9:30am-5:30pm Click here for location

Visvesvaraya Industrial and Technical Museum

A fantastic hands-on science museum with lots of buttons to press, wheels to turn, levels to pull and a dinosaur. Includes some interesting engineering displays and strange distorting mirrors.

8. Playgrounds

play areas in Bangalore

In addition to the Bugle Rock playground next to Bull Temple (see above), Bangalore has a plethora of gated, clean playgrounds dotted around the city. Many even have security guards. Admittedly they may need a fresh lick of paint, but they are a great place for your little ones to play with local children. Just bear in mind the majority don’t open until later in the afternoon (sometimes at late as 4pm).

Our favourites are Defence Colony Children’s Park (open 8am-12pm and 3:30pm-7pm daily)  and Nandanavana Children’s Play Ground (open daily 4pm-9pm) .

9. Funky Monkeys Softplay

www.funkymonkeys.in Open 11am-8pm Mon to Thurs, 10.30am-8.30am Fri to Sun Click here for location

Funky Monkeys, Bangalore with kids

Do you feel you need to reward the kids with some normality after all their travelling? Funky Monkeys at 1MG Road Mall is a clean, safe and super fun play area for children under the age of 12. Attentive staff inside the play area oversee your little ones, so kick back with a chai and enjoy some relative peace.

There is also a bigger Funky Monkeys at Orion Mall .

10. Hilton swimming pool day pass

Hilton, Bangalore with kids

Sample 5-star luxury for an afternoon at the Hilton Bangalore Embassy GolfLinks , with a guest day-pass to their outdoor swimming pools. There is a nice heated kids’ pool and jacuzzi pool (which is also great for the little ones), as well as a standard main pool. The staff will look after you extremely well, so sit back on one of their king-size cabanas poolside and order a beef burger and a cold bottle of Kingfisher. You deserve it.

The one downside of the Hilton, however, is the lack of shade. If it’s a very hot day, or you’re looking for a cheaper alternative, we recommend the covered pool at The Paul . They too have a kids’ pool, although it’s unheated and a bit on the chilly side.

11. Sunday Brunch at the Sheraton

Sheraton, Bangalore with kids

Brunch to many of us means a good fry-up enjoyed on a late and lazy morning. In Bangalore, Sunday Brunch is actually a buffet lunch held 12pm until 4pm in most of the big 5* hotels and is extremely popular with expats and locals alike.

Our favourite is the Sheraton Sunday Brunch as it lays on the best entertainment for kids. There is a supervised play area that includes a bouncy castle, face painting, crafts, toys and balloon-animals made to order. And the best bit? Kids under 4 are FREE! The buffet is extensive and if you’ve been travelling in India for a while, treat yourselves to some cured meats, cheese and slow cooked beef.

Other activities in Bangalore

Bangalore Fort, Bangalore with kids

Bangalore Fort , although very small, is a good space for the kids to explore and a peaceful retreat from the chaos of surrounding streets. Combine a visit here with a meander around bustling Krishnarajendra Market for a taste of traditional urban India. It is extremely busy, so we advise putting the kid(s) on your shoulders, taking in the colourful spices and dyes and perhaps purchasing some fresh fruit. In the centre is the colourful flower market.

Further South along Krishnarajendra Road (just 500 metres) there is also Tipu Sultan’s Palace and Venkataraman Temple .

Bangalore Palace  is another interesting place to visit. Supposedly based on Windsor Castle, marvel at the lavish interiors and walls adorned with old family photographs. There is also some disturbing hunting memorabilia on display.

If you feel the need to escape the city, we also recommend a day trip to Nandi Hills , stopping at Prestige Golfshire for lunch and a dip in the pool on the way back to Bangalore. Or enjoy the thrills at the amusement park and water park of Wonderla , one hour drive South West of the city.

Where to stay

Many of the 5* hotels often have good deals on booking.com. At time of writing, Taj West End had rooms for Rs8000 and the Sheraton had rooms for Rs6400, so it’s worth checking out.

A recommended mid-range hotels include Pride Hotel (central location and great breakfast).

Getting to Bangalore

Bangalore is a well connected hub on the Indian rail network with direct overnight trains to Hampi , Pondicherry , Chennai, Kochi , Goa , and there are up to 14 trains per day to Mysore . Check the  IRCTC website  for up-to-date train times. There are three main train stations in Bangalore; City train central is the main hub, Cantonment train station is handy for the central MG Road area, while Yeshvantpur train station is 8km northwest and where you’ll arrive if coming from Goa.

International and domestic flights arrive and depart from Kempegowda International Airport , 40km North of central Bangalore. Air Asia, Air India, GoAir, IndiGo, JetAirways and SpiceJet are the domestic operators with daily flights to all major cities across in India.

Getting around Bangalore

Bangalore traffic has to be seen to be believed. A 5km drive, can easily take half an hour. So bare this in mind when planning your day.

Bangalore auto with kids

The easiest way to get around Bangalore is by booking a car through either the Uber or Ola app. However, by far the most fun way to get around is by auto. Check out our post Auto-rickshaws in Bangalore with kids . There is also the shiny new metro, that is still a work in progress. There are currently two lines in operation and the best source of information on it is actually wiki .

30 Things to do with kids on weekends in Bangalore

“What do you do on weekends?”

“There is nothing to do, yaar! We visit malls and children play in the play area there”

This is a conversation, almost all of us must have had with our friends. It is true that in new areas, you will find no parks and at least 4-5 malls within 5 kms radius. I live in Bengaluru, but this is true for most of the metros across India.

In this situation, most of us end up visiting shopping malls, eating in food courts or restaurants there or catching a movie weekend after weekend.

I recently read an article about “Things to do in Mumbai” and that inspired me to do this post regarding Bangalore. There is so much to do in our lovely city. It only takes a little planning to make the weekend memorable for your children and also give them a more wholesome way of deviation and rejuvenation after the school week.

I have personally visited all these places with my daughter barring one or two, so I can give first-hand experience of most of these and few that I have not visited, I have got great feedback from others.

1) Lalbagh Botanical Gardens

The first place that comes to my mind is “Lalbagh Botanical Gardens”. Spread over 240 acres, it is a must visit. My daughter just loves the expansive parks, huge trees some of which are hundreds of years old. You will find hundreds of people walking, running, families having a picnic. The lotus pond, lake with its ducks and fishes are a special attraction. You may also plan your trip around the events like flower shows, fruit   melas etc.

Wow..this is an extensive and an excellent source to keep boredom at bay. Besides; It just not helps localites get an idea of how to spend some time out as a family; it surely gives outsiders like myself an idea of where to head the next time we step foot in Bengaluru!! Good Job Ms. Priya S !!!

And yes, your are extremely correct when you say that there is a dearth of parks or open natural spaces within the city for taking in whatever little is left of mother nature to cherish.

8. Bangalore Palace

Designed by Kempe Gowda I and built by Rev. J. Garrett, the Bangalore Palace is a must-see historical monument in the city. One of the many royal residences and must see places in Bangalore, the Tipu Sultan Summer Palace and Fort portrays the beautiful fusion of Indo-Islamic architecture. Hours: 8:30am to 5:30am

Entry fee: Rs.15 per person for Indians, Rs.200 per person for foreign nationals

10. Vidhana Soudha

The Vidhana Soudha is the Karnataka State legislature’s seat (assembly), situated in the heart of the city. The massive structure is said to be built in the neo-Dravidian i X A style of Hindu temple architecture that originated in South India or Mysore style and was completed in 1956. Attractions: Architecture, the building is illuminated on holidays and Sundays

Days open: All days, visitors not allowed inside

Things to consider: Entry is allowed only with special permission.

11. Bangalore Fort

Built by Kempe Gowda I, the Bangalore Fort was a mud fort back in 1537. Haider Ali, Tipu Sultan’s father and the ruler of Mysore state, rebuilt it with stone in 1761. Mysore palace is one of the places to visit near Bangalore. The biggest attractions in Karnataka is the Mysore Palace or the Amba Vilas Palace, owned by the Mysore Royal Family. Where: Mysore (140km from Bangalore)

An anonymous blogger and a travel enthusiast shares his experience of going on a short trip to Mysore on his birthday along with his friends. He says, “Yes, it was my b’day and we planned to go on a Mysore Trip. I could manage only few hours of sleep and had to wake up at 5 am to get ready for the trip… We reached a place with remains of Tipu Sultan’s Palace and also visited a temple near by.

We left for Chamundi temple on a hill-top and got an amazing view of Mysore city… Our next destination was the magnificent Mysore Palace. Cameras were not allowed inside. After examining the interior for sometime it tells you what “Live Life King Size” means, as my friend Nikhil rightly told “Assume you are the KING of the palace while you are roaming inside” and believe me it will really make you feel like all the artistic works were just done for you. I was just amazed to see the hard work that may have been put in to build this awesome palace ( i ).”

14. Begur Fort

Many say that Begur is where Bangalore was born. The small municipality near Bangalore has a fort, which spreads about 1.4km2. I've visited 93 countries, 57 of them with kids. These 5 underrated spots are great places to enjoy with your family.

  • Karen Edwards has traveled to 93 countries, and 57 of them have been with her young children.
  • Edwards said that her family has had more fun exploring underrated spots than the popular ones.
  • Her favorites include Tanzania for its safari tours and Abu Dhabi for its vibrant festival scene.

Insider Today

This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Karen Edwards , who blogs about her family's travels around the world. The following has been edited for length and clarity.

Since 2000, I've visited 93 countries and 57 of them have been with my four children who are all under the age of 10.

I am a nurse by background, but I have been blogging about traveling with my husband and kids since 2014. I cover a lot of off-the-beaten-track destinations and write itineraries for places I've been to, explaining how they work for families with children.

Many popular family destinations tend to be overcrowded. They're usually the ones that get a lot of media exposure or are shown in viral videos on social media. In America, it'd be places like Disneyland in California or Disney World in Florida, while for Europeans, it might be some of the Spanish resort areas.

Although my family and I have visited these places, we have always come away disappointed. They often lack educational experiences, feeling like pointless affairs.

I think traveling to underrated spots makes trips feel more exclusive and you can learn more about the cultures of the countries you visit — it also keeps you away from tourist traps.

We went on a safari tour in Tanzania

Our family visited Tanzania in 2019 in collaboration with a tourism brand. We were there for 12 days.

Our flights to the country were kind of expensive; we paid about $9,000 for our then-family of four, including a stop in Zanzibar at the end of the trip for a few days. However, overall, the entire trip didn't end up costing us that much.

We had some really unique experiences in Tanzania. We went to Mto Wa Mbu village , which is beneath a banana plantation, and we went on a safari tour in its Lake Manyara National Park .

Interestingly, Tanzania is one of the few places in the world where lions are known to climb trees. I remember seeing them sit in tall trees; it was quite unusual, but my kids really enjoyed how close they were to the animals.

Throughout our trip, we actually felt like we were experiencing life in Tanzania. Our campsite was on a river's edge in the depths of nature. It was nice not to feel surrounded by tourists.

My kids fell in love with Abu Dhabi's culture

Many people mistakenly believe that Dubai is a country, but in reality, it's a city in the United Arab Emirates, with Abu Dhabi being its capital.

My family and I moved to Abu Dhabi in 2021 and lived there for 18 months. The city does have a lot of similarities to glitzy and glam Dubai , but you get a more down-to-earth experience.

There are amazing festivals in Abu Dhabi where they display their culture in different formats, whether that be through local food or crafts. It does feel authentic because it's usually mainly locals participating and organizing them.

The city is also 1.5 hours away from Al Ain, which sits at the foot of  Jebel Hafeet , one of the tallest mountains in the region. Along the way up, you'll find many ancient artifacts, such as beehive huts, which have been there for thousands of years. At the top, you can watch incredible sunsets.

Related stories

The city also has the Al Ain Oasis , which uses an ancient irrigation system. It has these beautiful paved pathways that look like cobbled streets.

My kids loved Abu Dhabi and are constantly asking me to go back — they really liked all the cultural celebrations.

We love Sri Lanka so much, we're building a villa there

In 2022, my family and I moved to Sri Lanka from Abu Dhabi. We thought we'd have more family time here, and it was going to be an affordable place to live.

We're building a family-friendly villa here that should be completed by August. The area where we are building has a lot of nice cafes, bars, and restaurants nearby.

Overall, Sri Lanka is an amazing country that has so many diverse experiences. There are tea plantations, mountains, and beaches. As for wildlife, their national parks have loads of elephants and leopards.

On one occasion, we went on a safari boat tour to an isolated national park where we watched elephants swim across a lake and onto a tiny island. It was amazing.

The beaches in Sri Lanka are pristine. They have beautiful scenery with swaying coconut palm trees, clear water, and perfect waves. Our favorite is Kabalana Beach .

Because we're always on the beach, my children have learned how to surf. I think it's the most fun thing that we do on the weekends as a family.

The ski resorts and spas are amazing in Andorra

We visited Andorra in 2018 for about six days. It's a tiny country nestled in the Pyrenees between Spain. It's a two-hour drive from Barcelona and three hours from Toulouse, France.

The city has a unique fusion of cultures, though I think Catalonian is the strongest influence. During our trip, my family and I toured many ancient churches.

We also went to some amazing spas and resorts in Andorra. The hotel and ski system there is really family-friendly.

During our visit to the Grandvalira ski resort , my daughter learned how to ski and my husband got to snowboard — the resort has a kindergarten at the foot of its mountain, where kids can play or ski.

Andorra also has amazing spa facilities that are suitable for families and are sectioned off for different age groups.

Our trip was in collaboration with Andorra's tourism board, but I feel like it wasn't overly expensive in comparison to some other places around the world.

I was treated like family in Macedonia

Macedonia is a Balkan country just north of Greece. I haven't been there with children, but I wouldn't have any issues taking my kids there.

It has many beautiful small villages and it's great for skiing too.

The country is also home to one of the oldest and deepest lakes in Europe named Lake Orchid, which borders Albania. There's this beautiful, small village on the lake that has charming restaurant and a lovely atmosphere for relaxing and enjoying good food.

I visited the country in 2008, and then again in 2012 with my then-boyfriend and now-husband.

The first time I visited, I went with two girlfriends, and we were backpackers. We arrived in the middle of the night by bus and had no idea what we were doing. The bus driver just made a call, and a stranger came and picked us up in his car — I thought I was going to die.

The opposite happened. He took us back to his home with his family, and we stayed there with them for a few days. We ended up extending the trip because he and his family were so amazing.

They didn't speak a word of English, and we couldn't speak a word of their language either. We'd just gesture at each other, and they'd give us food and red wine.

I just totally fell in love with them and their country.
