Zambezi River Cruise FAQ's

Before booking a Zambezi River Cruise in Victoria Falls, please read some of the below more frequently asked questions about cruising on the Zambezi River in Victoria Falls.

Guests of all ages are welcome of a Zambezi River Cruise. Children under 12 pay half price and children 2 and younger are free.

Although wildlife sightings are not guaranteed on a Zambezi River cruise, with the banks of the Zambezi National Park flanking each cruise, you’ll be likely to spot elephants, hippos, crocodiles, a range of antelope species and a range of exciting birdlife.

Your safety and enjoyment is our main concern. Your Victoria Falls River Cruise may be delayed due to weather conditions. Normally rainstorms only last about half an hour, so be patient,  we will try to ensure you get to experience your cruise. If it starts raining while you are on your cruise, rain flaps on the side of the boat will drop down to keep you dry.

National Parks fees are not part of the Zambezi River Cruise price. They are an additional fee charged by the Government to help maintain the Zambezi River and the surrounding National Park areas. These fees are to paid on arrival before your cruise and are US$10 per adult and US$5 per child.

The water level of the Zambezi River varies remarkably throughout the year. The Victoria Falls region receives seasonal rainfall, and therefore the amount of water flowing over the Victoria Falls changes drastically.

The water level is at its lowest point around November each year. At this time of year the water falls mainly in the deeper section of the river on the Zimbabwean side of the Falls. During the low water season some areas of the Zambian side dry up completely leaving a gigantic crack of exposed bare rock in the earth. This may not be as spectacular as the Victoria Falls in full flood.

The water level is at its highest between April and May. During these months the Victoria Falls are a thundering wall of falling water and the spray from the falls can obscure the view.

So which time of year is best to experience a Zambezi River Cruise in Victoria Falls? The real answer is all year round. During the dryer months between June and September you are more likely to spot wildlife on the banks of the river. However a Zambezi River Cruise is a "not to be missed" opportunity no matter what time of year you are visiting Victoria Falls.

During the Jurassic Period (150-200 million years ago), volcanic activity resulted in thick basalt deposits covering large parts of Southern Africa. As the lava cooled and solidified, cracks appeared in the hard basalt crust, which were filled with clay and lime. Erosion and the course of the mighty Zambezi River cut through these softer materials, forming the first of a series of waterfalls.

Not your ordinary river cruise

Cruising along the Chobe River with a fresh cocktail in your hand, watching an orange-glowing sun sink slowly below the horizon? Well yes, but staying at the Zambezi Queen is so much more than a river cruise. It is a magical experience, where you can get extremely close to very relaxed wildlife. When you wake up and peek through the curtains, you will see elephants, hippos, birds - all indulging in the fresh waters of the Chobe River. Leave the ‘mother ship’ by hopping on a smaller, yet comfortable, tender boat to get even closer to the wildlife. You will soon realise that the Zambezi Queen offers a true hotel experience on the Chobe River, operating between Botswana and Namibian waters. This long (45 meter) luxury boat cruises gently down the river, with amazing views over the Caprivi Strip on one side and Chobe National Park on the other. Once on board, flexibility is key. Feel like venturing out in a smaller boat, or trying your luck during a fishing trip? It’s all possible. Or are you leaning more towards lazing all morning on the viewing deck to the background sound of rippling water? No problem, it is all about finding your own flow.

Sleeping in small ship cabins? We didn’t think so. This luxury vessel has three floors with fourteen cabins on the first and second floor. Spacious, modern, beautifully decorated, with comfortable beds and spa-like bathroom – just to name a few characteristics. There are ten cabins with a small private balconies and four larger master cabins. Cabins are twin or double, en-suite with a toilet and shower. There are fans and shutters to keep the cabin cool. All the main areas are on the top floor (for the best views), air-conditioned and protected by mosquito screening. Simply nestle yourself into one of the cosy nooks, glimpse at game through a telescope, order your favourite drink at the bar, or dip in the plunge pool with a 360°-degree view. And let’s not forget the culinary delights, served on board. From a creamy bowl of warming porridge in the morning, to a decadent white chocolate parfait at night: dining here is a treat. The well-trained kitchen staff effortlessly combines local flavours with culinary delights from the west, creating mouth-watering dishes, suited for true gourmet palates.

Activities at the Zambezi Queen

A boat safari on a floating boutique hotel is an entirely different experience from a land-based safari. You will cruise along one of the most game-dense areas of Africa. During dry season, islands along the riverbank stay green, attracting wildlife from all over. From tender boats, enjoy water based safari activities, full of elephant watching (Chobe is home to one of the biggest elephant populations in the world), spotting rare birds, buffalo herds, prides of lions, hippos lolling about and much more. Like fishing? Tiger and bream fishing tours are offered in season. Go on a tour to a local village to see more of Botswana’s rich culture or sign up for a game drive into Chobe National Park (at an additional cost). Activities are in the mornings and afternoons, with a delicious lunch in between during the hottest hours of the day (and perhaps followed by a siesta?). After the afternoon safari activity, sundowners, dinner and amazing African skies are served. The Zambezi Queen is moored in Namibian waters every evening, to provide you with the most spectacular views of the African sunset. Yes, a safari on the Zambezi Queen is truly smooth sailing.

Tripadvisor comments Zambezi Queen

Normally, a safari game drive consists of driving through the bush for a few hours and scanning the scenery in hopes of an animal encounter. With a river boat cruise on the Chobe Riverfront, such intense effort is not needed. Consisting of a series of flat, grassy islands, visitors are presented with sweeping panoramas of herds of elephant, Cape Buffalo, various wildebeests, crocodiles and numerous hippos. This is also a bird-lovers' delight with many species represented. And when the sun goes down, the mighty African sunset will leave an indelible mark on your soul. Yeah. It's that good. Doc4 from Plainfield, NJ
We had an amazing time on the Zambezi Queen. Wayne and his staff (especially Lennon) were outstanding. We were so well taken care of, had a blast and enjoyed the wildlife and storms to the fullest. The staff included us in their beautiful music and dance on our last night. Our room was beautiful and they've added an on-short generator so there is electricity at night. This was one of the biggest highlights of our 2 weeks in Africa. Noriana

Victoria Falls River Boat Cruises

boat cruise zambezi river

There are a variety of operators offering cruises from both the Zimbabwean and Zambian sides of the Zambezi River. The sunset cruises are a fine way to enjoy the beautiful vegetation lining the Zambezi as well as limited game viewing and lots of birding.

Zambezi River Sunset Cruise

Zambezi sunset cruises vary in boat size - from essentially private boats that take 8 to 10 people to large party boats that can take 120 or more. When booking, ask the name of the boat and its size if you have a specific group size in mind or want a larger or smaller boat experience.

Experience the Zambezi by River Boat

Look out for hippos.

Hippos reportedly account for more human deaths in Africa than any other mammal. This is because of their instinctive territorial aggression rather than specifically anti-human behaviour. There have been recorded incidents of hippo males being killed by other hippos in a battle over territory. Hippos spend most of their days in the water and their nights grazing up to several kilometres away from water.

Their well-worn feeding paths are used by humans and the meeting of the two often results in human tragedy. The hippo "yawn", in which it appears to be yawning, is actually a sign of aggression, literally baring the fangs. A distant relative of the zebra and rhino, the hippopotamus is generally a vegetarian but has been known to steal meat from crocodiles.

The Zambezi River is one of Africa’s most iconic and spectacular waterways, flowing through six countries in Southern Africa: Zambia, Angola, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, and Mozambique. With a length of approximately 2,574 kilometres (1,599 miles), it is the fourth-longest river in Africa.

The river begins its journey in the northwest corner of Zambia, where it emerges from a marshy area called the Zambezi Marshlands. It then meanders eastward, forming the border between Zambia and Namibia for a short distance before entering Angola. In Angola, it takes a southward turn, forming the border between Namibia and Angola, and eventually flows back into Zambia.

As you embark on your Zambezi River cruise, you’ll witness the raw power and grandeur of the world-famous Victoria Falls, one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World.

The Zambezi River, with its impressive cascades, creates a thundering spectacle as it plunges into the Batoka Gorge, enveloping the area in mist and creating a mesmerizing rainbow. The sheer magnitude of this natural wonder is an awe-inspiring sight that will leave you in awe.

So, get ready to embark on an unforgettable journey along the Zambezi River, where every twist and turn promises a new discovery. Let us be your virtual guide as we navigate through the tips and insights for a remarkable Zambezi River cruise in Victoria Falls.

Tips for Taking a Victoria Falls River Cruise

1) take a zambezi cruise safari in the dry season.

The best time of year to take a Zambezi River cruise is generally during the dry season, which typically runs from May to October. During this period, the river’s water levels are lower, allowing for better visibility of wildlife along the banks and in the river itself.

The dry season also offers more stable weather conditions with less rainfall, making it a comfortable and enjoyable time to be on the water.

Additionally, during the dry season, the Zambezi River is less likely to experience heavy flow , resulting in calmer waters for a smoother and more tranquil cruise experience. The reduced water levels may also expose sandbanks and islands, providing opportunities for closer wildlife encounters and bird watching.

Two boats on the Zambezi River

It’s important to note that the exact timing can vary slightly from year to year, and it’s always recommended to check local weather and river conditions before planning your cruise. If you’re interested in specific wildlife sightings, such as migratory bird species or certain animal behaviours, it’s advisable to research their seasonal patterns to align your visit accordingly.

That being said, it’s worth mentioning that the Zambezi River can be a captivating destination year-round, and each season has its unique charm.

I took a Victoria Falls boat cruise during the wet season (November to April) which has higher water levels and lush greenery and enjoyed the experience. On top of that, the falls were in full force which was a mindblowing sight.

2) Pick the Victoria Falls River Cruise That’s For You

The Zambezi River offers a variety of cruise experiences throughout the day, catering to different preferences and occasions. Here are the different types of Zambezi River cruises based on specific timings:

Sunrise Cruises

Sunrise cruises are a wonderful way to start your day on the Zambezi River. These cruises usually depart early in the morning, allowing you to witness the tranquil beauty of the river as the sun rises. It’s a peaceful and serene experience, perfect for nature enthusiasts and those looking to capture the soft morning light and the river’s awakening wildlife.

Lunch Cruises

A shot from the bow of a Zambezi River cruise boat with another boat in front

Lunch cruises provide a delightful midday experience on the Zambezi River. These cruises often depart around midday, offering a leisurely and scenic journey while enjoying a delicious meal onboard. You can enjoy the flavours of local cuisine, soak up the views, and perhaps even spot wildlife along the riverbanks during this relaxing cruise.

Dinner Cruises

Dinner cruises on the Zambezi River are an enchanting and romantic experience. These cruises typically depart in the early evening, allowing you to enjoy a stunning sunset and the transition into a starry night sky. Enjoy dinner accompanied by music and a soothing ambience, you can revel in the beauty of the river and create lasting memories.

That said, dinner cruises are offered on larger boats which makes for a less intimate and peaceful experience.

Sunset Cruises

boat cruise zambezi river

Sunset cruises are among the most popular types of Zambezi River cruises. Departing in the late afternoon, these cruises provide a magical experience as you witness the breathtaking colours of the setting sun reflecting off the water.

It’s a serene and captivating journey that allows you to unwind, enjoy the scenery, and observe the wildlife that congregates near the river at this time.

Each of these cruises offers a unique perspective and ambience, allowing you to connect with the Zambezi River in different ways. Whether you prefer the serenity of a sunrise, the indulgence of a meal, the romance of an evening, or the awe-inspiring beauty of a sunset, there is a Zambezi River cruise tailored to suit your needs.

3) Take a Zambezi River Cruise that Includes Snacks

If you aren’t taking a dinner cruise, be sure to select a Zambezi River cruise that includes snacks. You will be out on the river for a couple of hours in the heat and may get hungry. Most operators include drinks so it’s also a good idea to have something in your stomach.

tray of snacks on a Victoria Falls River cruise

I took a Ra-Ikane river tour which included a small bar paired with excellent bar snacks.

4) Take a Ra-Ikane Sunset Cruise in Victoria Falls

Although you can take a Victoria Falls boat cruise in the morning or for lunch, departing early evening offers the best overall experience. Taking a Ra-Ikane sunset cruise in Victoria Falls offers the most intimate and relaxing experience.

Birds flying towards a setting sun. Photo from the bow of a Zambezi river cruise

A sunset cruise in Victoria Falls offers a truly magical and memorable experience. Animals are more active during this time so you can witness a vibrant array of wildlife. This includes elephants, hippos, and various bird species, as they come to the riverbanks. The opportunity to observe these majestic creatures against the backdrop of a stunning sunset is truly remarkable.

A Ra-Ikane Zambezi River cruise offers an exceptional and immersive experience. With small, luxurious boats and silent electric-powered operation, the intimate setting allows for a personalized journey without disturbing wildlife. Up-close encounters with animals create memorable wildlife interactions.

Knowledgeable guides provide insightful commentary, enriching your understanding of the ecosystem. The scenic beauty, especially during sunset, offers breathtaking views and culinary delights add to the indulgence of the experience, showcasing local flavours.

Whether you’re seeking a romantic experience or simply want to create lasting memories, the idyllic setting, gentle boat sway, and breathtaking views make it the perfect choice. With opportunities for photography, you can capture the changing colours of the sky, silhouettes of wildlife, and the cascading water, ensuring that the beauty of the experience stays with you long after the cruise ends.

5) Bring Sunscreen

That said, a sunset cruise in Victoria Falls can be very hot. Until the sun dips low enough, the cover in your boat may not be enough to keep you out of the rays. I got roasted on our Victoria Falls boat cruise and spent most of the ride rotating seats.

If your Victoria Falls sunset cruise is busy, you may not have this option. Best to bring sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat that can also cover your neck .

6) Don’t Forget Your Camera

Taking a Victoria Falls river cruise gets you the unique opportunity to see wildlife from the water. In a sense, it is very much a Zambezi cruise safari. As such, don’t forget your camera!

Close up of a crocodile on land in Zimbabwe

Having a good quality camera and zoom lens is recommended as you won’t get as close to some of the animals as you would on a traditional safari. That said, a good cell phone camera works in a pinch.

Man taking photo of a sunset with his iphone from the bow of a Victoria Falls river cruise

On my Zambezi cruise safari, I saw plenty of hippos coming up for air as well as a pair getting out of the water for an evening stroll. We also saw plenty of crocodiles, colourful birds, and antelope.

7) Take a Chobe River Safari

To increase your chances of seeing animals from the water, I highly recommend taking a Chobe River safari from Victoria Falls.

The Chobe River flows through Botswana and forms part of the Botswana-Namibia border. It’s a tributary of the Zambezi River and is renowned for its exceptional wildlife viewing opportunities.

Hippo in the Zambezi River

During the dry season, the river attracts a diverse range of animals, including herds of elephants, buffalo, zebras, giraffes, and various antelope species. A Chobe River safari offers a chance to get up close to the wildlife and explore the picturesque landscapes.

The Chobe River also provides a habitat for a rich variety of bird species, making it a haven for birdwatching enthusiasts.

The full-day Chobe River tour starts early AM with pickup from your Victoria Falls hotel and includes transport across the border and then to your boat. It is a full-day outing, getting you back to Victoria Falls late afternoon.

This tour gets you the best of both worlds combining a Victoria Falls river cruise with a chance of seeing a wider range of wildlife.

Best Place to Stay in Victoria Falls to Enjoy a Zambezi River Cruise

After my Rovos Rail journey to Victoria Falls , I stayed at the amazing Palm River Hotel . On top of it being a top-notch lodge with an amazing restaurant, they operate a Zambezi cruise safari company from their front lawn! This made taking a Victoria Falls river cruise super convenient and helped me maximize my short visit to Zimbabwe.

Taking a Zambezi River cruise in Victoria Falls is an experience that should not be missed. To make the most of your adventure, remember to choose the right type of cruise that aligns with your preferences, whether it’s a sunrise, lunch, dinner, or sunset cruise.

If you want to make the most of your time on the water, you book a Ra-Ikane for an intimate and luxurious experience.

Will be leaving on a river cruise 9/5 - 9/16/14 from STP to Moscow on MS Zosima Shaskov, totally unfamiliar with boat and area, any info will help. I've been warned about what to do and not to do as far as food and water, which has already frightened me. We are a group of 12.

Dear egocentric, welcome to Cruise Critic! You would get more responses if you had put the voyage in the header.

I believe the ship is similar to the Lev Tolstoy, which we cruised on last September. There is nothing to worry about if you keep common sense.

Please read our trip story on our website http://www.stevekathytravels.com. Our e-mail addresses are also on the website.

Also, if you go to this website, http://riverfleet.com/cruises/view?id=38, it gives a day by day breakdown of your cruise.

I hope you have gotten your Russian Visas by now. You can get rubles from any ATM in Moscow or STP. The exchange rate is about 36 to 1.

We are always happy to answer any questions.

Go and enjoy your trip, relax.:)

You were very kind to post all those links to the OP.

His first post to CC and only two weeks before a big trip to a foreign land, he was lucky to have your valuable info and insight.

Lets hope some of the others in his group of 12 have done some homework! Travelling to Russia definitely needs some prior planning!

Thank you for your kind words. We enjoy sharing our experiences with others to help them out.

You might get some response if you post in the River Cruising section. There are often posts about Volga River cruises.

You could try the appropriate Roll Call board, but with only 150 passengers (approx) on river boats, it's unlikely that you will get many, or any responses from people cruising on the same date.

We did a similar cruise with another company six years ago. Russia is a magnificent destination and the river was fascinating.

Unfortunately the cruise boat excursions are in large groups and offer frustratingly brief glimpses of Moscow and St Petersburg. Best thing we did was to stay extra days in the centre of both cities to explore independently at our own pace.

Beware of pickpockets, they are excellent at what they do! Keep wallets etc. in inside, zippered pockets.

I am not a HE, and the name used was because it was the only name I could come up with as so many names were turned down. I really don't have an attitude I just came across this website by accident trying to get some information. But I would like to thank you for responding. Have a nice evening.
You might want to start over with a new name. Cruise Critic is a wonderful resource for all cruises, but as in a Greek tragedy our greatest strength is also our fatal flaw: the most prolific posters tend to have definite likes and dislikes based on their lengthy cruise history (often with one favorite cruise line). If your CC name seems to dis- them, your posts often will not get a fair hearing. Just human nature. ;)

Hi egocentric

you might want to post on the River Cruise Roll Call page, here is the link to it, if you use your cruise company, cruise title and travel date you might find other passengers and get more info relative to you.

I hope you have a great trip, we've done a couple of river cruises and I'd love to go on one cruise in Russia...its on the bucket list! :-)

We have gained so much useful information from so many very helpful people here on CC, I hope you do too.

steamboats

I´ve just returned from Russia a week ago. I´ve been on the Ivan Bunin which is a sister ship to the Zosima Shashkov. The Ivan Bunin has been renovated in 2011 and the combined 2 cabins to one (not all of them but quite a few). The regular (old) cabins are really tiny (not to mention the bathroom). We were able to see a few cabins. You can see some cabin photos here . 326 is one of the "doubled" cabins (and we´ve been in that one) which has a larger bathroom.

The itinerary is really spectecular and I took more than 2,100 photo :D. So make sure you have enough data storage with you! But we also had gorgeous weather with upper 80ies and bright sunshine (a real heat wave for August). My review with lots of photos will be online soon but it´s in German. We did the St. Petersburg - Moskow itinerary.

Although the Russian are not allowed to accept foreign currency you were able to pay in Euro (and Dollar in some place) in most of the touristy spots (especially souvenir booths).

Food was simple but good. We had bottled water for all excursions. There are supermarkets up the street in Moscow and St. Petersburg. Not too far to walk. Water is pretty cheap.

Dear Jazzbeau,

The lady is a first time poster and had difficulty getting a screen name that was acceptable.

Please post instructions on how she can change her screen name to one that will not raise any hackles.

Thank you so much, hoyaheel.

I spoke to the lady today and she was successful in changing her screen name.

Found that OP had started another thread in another forum. Now that name is changed and threads are merged, let's help her out!

PS - thanks to Talisker92 for posting info on how to change names. I didn't have time to look this up before the problem was solved!

I spent a half hour on the phone with the nice lady and allayed a lot of her fears. We discussed currency, size of cabins, food and water,time differences, weather etc. Also suggested the not to miss sites.

I was glad I was able to help her.

My review is online now but it´s in German - anyway there are a lot of photos to look at so you can see what to expect.

We did change 150 Euros (actually we used the ATM at St. Petersburg airport). Most of the money went into the tips and a coffee break at Moscow airport. We are no big shoppers. We bought some magnets and some pieces of lace (as my Mom is a lace maker). There´s a lot of nice stuff to buy but nothing I really need. You can still change money onboard or pay with Dollars / Euro and receive Rubel as change.

Image

Description

See all the gems of historical and cultural center of the capital in short time and without traffic jams or tiresome walking.

Depending on the itinerary and duration of the Moscow River boat trip, the tour can be 3 or 5 hours.

Highlights of the tour

  • St Basil’s Cathedral;
  • Stalin skyscraper on Kotelnicheskaya (Tinkers) embankment;
  • The Kremlin;
  • “House on the Embankment” Stalin skyscraper;
  • Monument to Peter I;
  • The Central House of Artists;
  • Christ the Savior Cathedral;
  • Gorky Park;
  • Moscow State University;
  • Russian Academy of Sciences;
  • Luzhniki stadium;
  • Novodevichy Monastery;
  • Kiev railway station;
  • Europe Square;
  • Moscow City Hall;
  • Government House;
  • Expocentre Exhibition Complex;
  • and other famous sights.

You will learn about the different epochs of the city from the foundation in 1147 till Soviet times of 20 th  century.

Moscow River

Moskva river has the form of a snake and is the main waterway of Moscow, consisting of a cascade of reservoirs. Within the city, Moskva river is 80 km long, 120 m - 200 m wide and up to 14 m deep. The narrowest part of the river is the Kremlin area in the city center, and the most extensive is around the Luzhniki Stadium in the south.

Bridges in Moscow

Undoubtedly, bridges and embankments are among the most scenic spots and main attractions of Moscow. Plus, they are so romantic.

  • Bolshoy Kamenny Bridge –  Great Stone Bridge –  is the main bridge of Moscow . The first stone bridge was constructed here in the 17th century.
  • Patriarshy Bridge  is one of the youngest pedestrian bridges, built in 2004. The bridge connects the iconic Christ the Saviour Cathedral with funky Bersenevskaya embankment, extremely popular place among locals for its trendy art galleries, cafes and panoramic views. Patriarshy Bridge used to be a shooting location for ex-Russian President Dmitry Medvedev's New Year speech to the nation.
  • Borodinsky Bridge,  erected in honor of the 100th anniversary of the glorious victory in the Battle of Borodino (which every Russian kid knows about), a fierce legendary battle during the Russo-French war of 1812.
  • Bagration Bridge  one of the  pedestrian bridges with most picturesque views of the Moskva River with its numerous upper-level observation platforms. The bridge was erected to celebrate the 850th anniversary of Moscow city in 1997.
  • Krymsky Bridge  used to be in Top 5 Europe’s longest bridges some 100 years ago. The bridge got its name after the ancient Krymsky ford which Crimean Tartars used to invade Moscow in the 16 th  century.

Embankments of Moscow

Moscow river boats 37 embankments, the most popular being Kremlevskaya, Sofiyskaya, Pushkinskaya, Vorobyovskaya and Kolomenskaya.

You can get the most spectacular views of the Kremlin from  Kremlevskaya and Sofiyskaya embankments.

  • Pushkinkaya embankment  is the most romantic in Moscow. It meanders along Gorky Park and Neskuchnyi garden and is rich for all kinds of entertainment as well as cozy nooks, including Olivkovy beach, the famous Zeleny theater as well as a pier for river cruisers.
  • Vorobyevskaya embankment  is part of Sparrow Hills nature reserve. This place opens a beautiful panorama of the river and city from the observation deck and is considered to be the place for taking serious decisions in life.
  • Embankment in Kolomenskoye  Museum-Reserve has a special charm due to its peculiar geographical relief. The boat trip around Kolomenskoye would be the most peaceful in your life.
  • Taras Shevchenko embankment  is popular among photographers for its modern Moscow City skyscrapers. Highly recommended for your night boat trip.
  • Embankments of Moscow are the pride of the capital. A distinctive feature of each of the promenades is its architecture and beautiful views. In addition, almost all the embankments of Moscow have a rich history and a lot of notable buildings.

Different epochs

Taking a walk along the Moskva River by boat, you will witness the architecture of Moscow from different eras and styles. Archaeological studies indicate that already in the XI century there stood a fortified settlement on Borovitsky hill, which is now called the Kremlin. Little fortress could not accommodate all the residents of the rapidly growing city, and the Grand Duke ordered the construction of a new Kremlin, larger than the former.

Boat trip around Kolomenskoe Park

Moscow river boat trip starts from the pier Klenovy (Maple) Boulevard and provides reat views of Nicholas Perervinsky monastery.

Nicholas Perervinsky monastery was founded at the time of the Battle of Kulikov (1380). The monastery, got its name from the surrounding area – “Pererva”, which can be translated like “tear off” and because of the location –  here it abruptly changed its course, turning to Kolomna, standing on the opposite bank.

Nowadays Kolomenskoye is State Art, Historical, Architectural and Natural Landscape Museum-Reserve, which doors are open to everyone who wants to get in touch with the ancient history of Russia.

Take a break from the big city hustle in the shady parks and gardens of the Kolomenskoe Museum-Reserve. Don’t miss a wonderful Church of the Ascension and Tsar Alexey’s Palace in Kolomenskoye!

Monasteries and temples

  • Novospassky Monastery
  • Founded in the 13th century on the site where now is located the Danilovsky monastery. After a few decades, in 1330, Ivan Kalita moved the monastery onto the Borovitskii hill of the Kremlin. However, in the 15th century, Spassky Monastery again moved, this time to a more spacious place on Krasnoholmskaya waterfront.
  • Church of St. Nicholas in Zayaitskom
  • Erected in the middle of the XVIII century in baroque style. The building survived after the 1812 fire, but the utensils were destoyed. Parishioners collected donations and restored the temple on their own. In Soviet times, it was closed and re-opened only in 1992.
  • Cathedral of Christ the Savior
  • The church was originally erected in honor of the victory over Napoleon and was being under construction for long 44 years. Notoriously demolished in 1937 to be a giant swimming pool under open sky. The current building was constructed in 1990s. It is the tallest and one of the largest Orthodox churches in the world.
  • The temple was built in 1679-82, during the reign of Tsar Fedor Alekseevich, in late Muscovite Baroque style and can be characterized as bonfire temple. Each gable is a symbol of a heavenly fire.
  • Novodevichy Convent
  • The most famous concent and monastery in Moscow, presumably founded in 1524. Novodevichy’s status has always been high among other monasteries, it was in this monastery where the women of the royal blood, the wives of Tsars and local rulers of Moscow were kept in prison as nuns.
  • St. Andrew’s church  (male acts as Compound Patriarch of Moscow)
  • St. Andrew’s church stands right on the slopes of the Sparrow Hills, on the way down to the Moskva River, on the territory of the Nature Reserve “Sparrow Hills”. The monastery is small in size but is very cozy. It’s situated in a quiet courtyard surrounded by temples, fruit trees and flowers.

Hi, Leonorew,

Holiday Inn Vonogradovo is far from any metro station.

You can get the shuttle back the the airport and take a bus from the airport to Rechnoi Vokzal metro station, which is exactly where you need to get.

Your destination - The Northern River Port - is in walking distance from Rechnoi Vokzal metro station.

But timewise, it makes much more sense to take a taxi, moreover, if you consider that for the express Sheremetyevo-Rechnoi Vokzal you wil have to pay, perhaps, RUR 200 for two and for the taxi Vinogradovo-Rechnoi Vokzal about RUR 400 for two (about USD 15), the difference is not worth the lost time, IMHO.

Enjoy your trip

Dear PUPSA,

thanks so much for your reply. That is good information, and I agree that taking a taxi makes the most sense. I assume there will be someone to help us do just that at the Holiday Inn Vinogradova? who speaks English and can tell the taxi driver where we need to go...Thanks again, Leonore
