Ages 8 through high school

In the state of Connecticut, competitive travel soccer officially begins at U9, and is a player and parent’s first opportunity to experience the process of competitive soccer tryouts. Travel teams are formed based on number of “qualified” players available, and depending on the policy of the town, are formed as “balanced” or “ability based” teams. At the U9 through U14 age groups town travel teams play both a fall and spring season. Beginning at U15, travel soccer is only offered in the spring. Travel soccer teams compete in league play within their district, and may also elect to compete in State Cup Competition. Currently U9/U10 compete in a 7 vs. 7 format, U11/U12 compete in 9 vs. 9 format,  and U13 and up compete in a 11 vs. 11 format.

Mickey Kydes Soccer has many years of experience when it comes to directing, organizing and developing town travel soccer programs. Currently Mickey Kydes Soccer serves as the coaching director and director of travel soccer for the Westport Soccer Association and Old Greenwich / Riverside Community Center . Between these two programs Mickey Kydes Soccer is responsible for delivering a high level travel soccer experience to over 45 town travels teams between the U9 and high school age groups.

Fall 2024 - Spring 2025 TRYOUT INFORMATION

REGISTRATION IS LIVE!

Click - 2024-2025 INFORMATION PACKET (PDF) - Click

Our goal is to offer an excellent program while keeping costs reasonable so all town youth can participate. We continue to offer a family discount and financial assistance.

There is no deposit due before tryouts. Once your child is offered a position and accepts, the balance will be due within 48 hours as part of your acceptance.

- IMPORTANT NOTES ON TRAVEL PLAY -

PLAYING TIME: Player development is the primary goal of our travel program.  For that reason, and because we typically observe players developing at different rates, we strictly enforce a policy that all players play at least 50% of all friendly, league, cup and tournament games. 50% does not mean equal playing time – but rather ensures that all players are given the opportunity to develop and gain valuable game experience.

- TRYOUT AGE REQUIREMENTS -

Per CJSA and U.S. Soccer mandates, we register our teams by birth year.

NOTE for players born in 2017 : Players born in 2017 may try out for the U9 travel division. If selected for a U9 team in 2024-2025, those players born in 2017, must repeat in U9 for the following 2024-2025 season, and will thereafter play with their appropriate birth year class.

PLAYER SELECTION/PLACEMENT/ACCEPTANCE: During tryouts, we use professional soccer evaluators from inside and outside our club who have no conflict of interest with players. The evaluators supply impartial player skill assessments and recommend placement of players on teams. The assessments collect data on the player’s soccer abilities, potential, commitment, and behavior/conduct.

Players are notified of tryout results via email, so ensure that you verify the email address provided to Hartwell during tryout registration. Email is the only means of communicating the team selections, offers, and acceptance. Players and parents are asked to formally accept the spot on a team within 48 hours of the offer notification.

Once players accept team placements, the rosters will be posted on our website.  Team rosters must comply with various rules of competition, established by Connecticut Junior Soccer Association “CJSA”). U9 and U10 teams play 7v7 with maximum team rosters of 12 players; U11 and U12 teams play 9v9 with maximum rosters of 16 players; U13 and U14/U15 teams play 11v11 and we typically cap rosters at 18 players.

Other than maximum roster limits set by CJSA, the roster sizes are only guidelines .  Circumstances unique to an age/gender group could modify the team roster sizes and ultimately, placements from year to year.

- FINANCIAL COMMITMENT -

TRAVEL FEE: The travel fee covers professional support from Hartwell trainers under the oversight of our Director of Coaching and our Program Director.  The support program includes technical and tactical instruction, game day support, post-game reports, and specialized goalkeeper training. Hartwell also hosts and provides many coaching education opportunities through partnerships with other organizations.  The travel fees also cover updates and maintenance to equipment and fields (nets, balls, etc.), referee fees, town fees, state fees, and registration for the 2025 Glastonbury Spring Warm-Up Tournament. Financial assistance is available for those who qualify.

NOTE: if your child is selected for a premier team, there is a $100 winter program surcharge

(see Premiere Note below)

MULTI-CHILD DISCOUNTS:  We offer multiple child discounts for 3 or more children in our travel program. The discount applies to the Travel Fees only.   Note that Uniform fees are not discounted.

UNIFORM KIT: The base package of the new Capelli uniform includes a blue game jersey, gray game jersey, blue game shorts, gray training shirt, red socks, and training (reversible) pinney. PLEASE NOTE: Only New players is required to purchase a completely new kit.  Returning players may use the same uniform from the 2023-2024 season. Also available from the vendor are optional embroidered backpacks, warm-up jackets, and warm-up pants.   We have the uniforms on a 2-year cycle. Every 2 years you are required to buy a new uniform. The new Capelli uniforms will be good for 2023-2024 and 2024-2025.

TEAMS DUES: Individual team dues cover the team’s operating expenses (patches for seasonal tournaments, out-of-town tournament fees, team parties, etc.). Team dues will be assessed by the coach/manager at the start of each season and are paid directly to the team manager.  Team dues should not exceed $150 for the entire 2024-2025 season. Some teams choose to play in winter leagues (i.e. Oakwood, Tolland Indoor, etc.) or other out-of-town winter tournaments.  Those activities can have additional costs, but participation is not required and is at the parent’s discretion.

PREMIER WINTER TRAINING PROGRAM: If a team is selected as a premier team, there will be a mandatory winter training session commitment. Training will be once a week with a professional trainer for about 12 sessions between December and March. The premier winter program fee is an additional $100 per player fee. This additional fee does NOT include any games or registered play in an indoor league.

REFUND POLICY: Once a player has accepted a position and paid the applicable travel and uniform fees, there are no refunds.

- TIME COMMITMENT -

PLAYER TIME COMMITMENT: Players commit to a full year, which consists of two seasons: a Fall (late August-early November) and a Spring (early-April to mid-June) season.

Our club transitioned to the U.S. Soccer’s recommended practice-to-game ratio of 3 practices to every 1 game. Not all weeks will strictly follow that model, but teams typically have 2 weeknight practices per week of 90 minutes each.  On weekends, teams will typically have 1 game (usually Sundays) and 1 practice, or an additional game on Friday/Saturday.

OTHER SPORTS OR ACTIVITIES: Travel soccer is a two season commitment and it is important that our players honor that commitment.  We do not adopt a "soccer-only" approach that requires our players to always choose travel soccer commitments over any other sports or activities, but we also request that our players not consistently choose another sport or activity over travel soccer.

LOCATIONS: Practices are all on Glastonbury fields. Games are held in Glastonbury or in neighboring towns, like West Hartford, Enfield, Middletown, Avon, Granby, Portland, Burlington, and Farmington. In addition to our own Spring Warm-up Tournament, many teams may choose to compete in out-of-town or out-of-state tournaments.

Lastly, many of our travel teams will also play indoor soccer over the winter months at places like Oakwood in Glastonbury or FSA in Farmington. This play is optional and not part of the Glastonbury Hartwell Soccer Travel program.

TRAVEL PARENT TOURNAMENT COMMITMENT: Each spring in April, Hartwell hosts an annual soccer tournament called the GHSC Spring Warm-up Tournament , which can have over 200 teams submitted, mostly from out-of-town. Our families are required to fulfill a mandatory 3-hour work obligation at the tournament for each child in the travel program.  The parent work obligation is mandatory. The tournament is our biggest fundraiser and requires the support of all participants to succeed.

- TRYOUTS INFORMATION -

Again, there is no deposit due before tryouts. Once your child is offered a position and accepts, the balance will be due within 48 hours as part of your acceptance.

TRYOUT SCHEDULE (please note, there are two mandatory sessions for U8 YTL - U9 players):

- All field tryouts are at Addison Park on the two soccer fields to the left of the parking lot.

-Arrive 15 minutes early for check-in and warm-up

Connecticut joins elite group of best men's NCAA national champs. Who else is on the list?

Connecticut 's 75-60 win against Purdue for the men's national championship makes this official: The 2023-24 Huskies are not only the best team in program history but one of the best in recent NCAA history.

It's clear that UConn deserves to be ranked among the upper crust of national champions since the men's tournament expanded in 1985. The Huskies secured a place in this elite group by rolling through this year's tournament to become the eighth program to win back-to-back championships.

They have company from some teams of the recent past. And any list of the best national champions since expansion has to include dominant teams from UNLV, Duke, Kentucky and more.

Here’s how USA TODAY Sports ranks the best of the best from the past 40 seasons of college basketball:

2024 Connecticut (37-3)

Notable players: C Donovan Clingan , G Stephon Castle, G Tristen Newton

What the Huskies did in tournament play boggles the mind. UConn tore through opponents in the East Region, capped by a 25-point win against Illinois in the Elite Eight, and then topped Alabama by 14 points in the national semifinals and Purdue by 15 points on Monday night. This team was dominant from the very first seconds of the regular season and should be listed among the best teams in college basketball history, period.

1990 UNLV (35-5)

Notable players: F Larry Johnson , F Stacey Augmon, G Anderson Hunt

Like the Huskies, UNLV bulldozed every team in tournament play, beating six opponents by a then-record combined 112 points. That includes a 103-73 win against Duke that still stands as the largest margin of victory in the championship game. With NBA players across the board, the Rebels overcame a slow start and won 32 of their final 35 games.

1992 Duke (34-2)

Notable players: C Christian Laettner, G Bobby Hurley , F Grant Hill

The defending champs lost to only North Carolina and Wake Forest in a wire-to-wire run as the No. 1 team in the country. There were a few close calls in the tournament, including that famous Elite Eight win against Kentucky, but this Duke team is the best in school history and one of the best to ever come out of the ACC.

1996 Kentucky (34-2)

Notable players: G Tony Delk, F Antoine Walker, F Walter McCarty

Nine players from this behemoth would go on to play in the NBA, including three who were taken in the first round of the 1996 draft. Delk was the MVP of the tournament, but where the Wildcats stood out was in depth: Rick Pitino built one of the most-loaded rosters of the era, with waves of talent and athleticism designed to leave opponents in the dust. And Kentucky did just that, winning six tournament games by an average of 21.5 points and avenging an earlier loss to Massachusetts in the Final Four.

2021 Baylor (28-2)

Notable players: G Jared Butler , G Davion Mitchell, G MaCio Teague

Two of the many reasons why this Baylor team deserves to be remembered: One, the Bears went 28-2 and won the national championship amid the coronavirus pandemic, playing three games in all of March due to COVID-19 issues on the roster; and two, they beat an unbeaten Gonzaga team in the championship game. In fact, Baylor won five of six tournament games by double digits, with the closest win by nine points against Arkansas in the Elite Eight.

2007 Florida (35-5)

Notable players: C Joakim Noah , F Al Horford , G Corey Brewer

The Gators brought back all five starters and went back-to-back. Ranked No. 1 for most of the year, Florida dropped three of five in SEC play heading into the conference tournament but wouldn’t lose again, ripping off nine wins in a row including an 84-75 win against Ohio State in the championship game. Maybe the only SEC roster that could challenge 1996 Kentucky in terms of pure depth, the Gators had five players in double figures and an unstoppable mix of backcourt scoring and an intimidating frontcourt.

1995 UCLA (31-2)

Notable players: F Ed O’Bannon, F Charles O’Bannon, G Tyus Edney

The Bruins might’ve been a little lucky to get out of the tournament’s opening weekend thanks to Edney’s buzzer-beater against Missouri , but the 31-2 record speaks for itself. The most recent national champion in program history was actually a pretty young team, with Ed O’Bannon and center George Kidek the only seniors. But UCLA got a big boost from underclassmen such as Edney, Toby Bailey and J.R. Henderson to rank fourth nationally in scoring offense.

2008 Kansas (37-3)

Notable players: G Mario Chalmers , F Darrell Arthur , G Brandon Rush

Those 37 wins are the most in program history and tied for the second-most in NCAA history. KU would win 20 in a row out of the gate but wouldn’t take over at No. 1 until beating Memphis for the national championship. That was overdue recognition for a team that won all but seven games by a double-digit margin. With seven players who would play in the NBA and an unstoppable offense, these Jayhawks top the list of the best team of the Bill Self era and can make a very strong case for being the best in program history.

2018 Villanova (36-4)

Notable players: G Jalen Brunson , F Mikal Bridges , G Donte DiVincenzo

Four factors give the 2018 Wildcats the nod over the 2016 national champions. One, the 2018 team was a No. 1 seed in the tournament, compared to a No. 2 in 2016. Two, Villanova won the Big East tournament after failing to do so two years earlier. Three, this team was even more loaded than the 2016 version, with DiVincenzo thrown into the mix and Brunson and Bridges established as two of the best in the country. And four, the 2018 team was even more dominant in tournament play than the 2016 Wildcats, with all six wins coming by double digits.

  • The college basketball teams with the most national championships

ct travel soccer

There are more than 350 schools in Division I men's basketball. Yet only 15 teams have won multiple national championships. UCLA comes in first with 11. But which schools are close behind?

There are seven teams tied for ninth place at two championships apiece. Cincinnati (1961, 1962), Florida (2006, 2007), Louisville (1980, 1986), Michigan State (1979, 2000), North Carolina State (1974, 1983), Oklahoma State (1945, 1946), and San Francisco (1955, 1956).

Interestingly enough, four of those teams won their two championships in back-to-back years.

College basketball teams with the most national championships

  • Kentucky — 8
  • North Carolina — 6
  • Indiana — 5
  • Villanova — 3
  • Cincinnati — 2
  • Florida — 2
  • Louisville — 2
  • Michigan State — 2
  • NC State — 2
  • Oklahoma State — 2
  • San Francisco — 2

*Louisville’s participation in the 2013 tournament was later vacated by the Committee on Infractions.

Here's a closer look, including a table of the complete list of champions below:

8: Villanova — 3

Years: 1985, 2016, 2018

Villanova knows how to win a championship in style. The Wildcats’ first title still holds the record for the lowest-seeded team to win the NCAA tournament, as 8-seed Villanova upset mighty 1-seed Georgetown in 1985. In 2016, Kris Jenkins etched his name into March lore with a half-court buzzer-beater to down North Carolina. And in 2018, junior guard Donte DiVincenzo won the MOP after scoring 31 points off the bench as the Wildcats won their second in three years.

T6: Kansas — 4

Years: 1952, 1988, 2008, 2022

Kansas is the most recent national champion, beating North Carolina in a thriller in 2022. The Jayhawks' most recent title before that was an OT win against Memphis in 2008.

T4: Indiana — 5

Years: 1940, 1953, 1976, 1981, 1987

Indiana’s first two championships came via a former player in Branch McCracken. McCracken graduated from Indiana in 1930, and took over the coaching job in 1938-39. In his second year, he led the Hoosiers to a 20-3 season capped off by a 60-42 win over Kansas in just the second national championship game ever. Seven years after McCracken’s tenure ended, Bob Knight would take over in Bloomington. Knight’s first championship with Indiana in 1976 came on the end of a 32-0 season — the last perfect season by a national champion.

T4: Duke — 5

Years: 1991, 1992, 2001, 2010, 2015

All five of Duke’s championships come after 1981. Why is that an important date? It’s the first season Mike Krzyzewski took over in Durham. Before Coach K, Duke had been to two title games, losing to UCLA in 1964 and Kentucky in 1978. Since, they’ve been to nine, winning five, and holding the record for the most championships since 1990.

T3: Connecticut — 6

Years: 1999, 2004, 2011, 2014, 2023, 2024

Connecticut has the most national championships this century at five, but there’s a much more prestigious record the Huskies hold. UConn has been to six championship games and has won every time. No other team with at least three appearances is undefeated in title games.

T3: North Carolina — 6

Years: 1957, 1982, 1993, 2005, 2009, 2017

In 1957, a year after Bill Russell and San Francisco went 29-0 to win the national championship, fifth-year coach Frank McGuire led North Carolina to the second-ever undefeated national championship season in NCAA tournament history. The Tar Heels wouldn’t make it back to the championship game until 1968, in Dean Smith’s seventh year in Chapel Hill. It was the second of three straight Final Four trips without a title, but Smith’s first (and UNC’s second) would come in 1982, thanks to a roster of James Worthy, Sam Perkins, and Michael Jordan. Smith would win one more title in 1993. All three of UNC’s other championships came from his protégé, Roy Williams.

2: Kentucky — 8

Years: 1948, 1949, 1951, 1958, 1978, 1996, 1998, 2012

In the middle of the 20th century, long before they became famous for their team’s youth, Kentucky was a powerhouse. Adolph Rupp started at Kentucky in 1930-31, but it wasn’t until his 18th season, in 1948, that the Wildcats would win the program’s first NCAA tournament title. They’d repeat in 1949, and pick up two more before Rupp retired. Since, four different coaches have won a title with Kentucky: Joe B. Hall in 1978, Rick Pitino in 1996, Tubby Smith in 1998, and John Calipari in 2012.

1: UCLA — 11

Years: 1964, 1965, 1967, 1968, 1969, 1970, 1971, 1972, 1973, 1975, 1995

In all of college sports, it doesn't get much better than UCLA's reign through the ‘60s and ‘70s. From 1964 to 1975, UCLA had an overall record of 335-22, a win percentage of .938. Over 12 years. Through it all, the Bruins picked up 10 national championships, including seven in a row — feats that will never be replicated.
