Take a River Cruise for Sightseeing in Washington, D.C.

capitol river cruises parking

Rachel Cooper

It can be fun to walk the same cobblestone streets of America's founding fathers, but sometimes your feet just need a rest. A river cruise along the Potomac River can be a fun and family-friendly way to see the  spectacular views  and iconic sights of Washington, D.C.

One tour company that has been operating for more than 20 years, Capitol River Cruises, offers a 45-minute historical narrative sightseeing tour of the district aboard smaller-sized, semi-open river boats, the Nightingale and Nightingale II.

If you fancy yourself as more of a passive sightseer or you have limited time to visit Washington, then a river boat cruise might be right for you. On their boats, you can see well-known sights such as the Kennedy Center , Washington Monument, Jefferson Memorial, the U.S. Capitol, and the Lincoln Memorial —all in under an hour.

In addition, the cruise narrator will point out Key Bridge, Memorial Bridge, Roosevelt Island, Lyndon B. Johnson Memorial Grove, the Watergate Complex, Maritime Memorial, and the Custis-Lee Mansion.

During Cherry Blossom season, the river provides a picturesque vantage point of the blooms. The Cherry Blossom season can start anywhere from mid-March to mid-April and last for about two weeks.

Washington at Night

Taking in the sights of Washington at night from the Potomac can be breathtaking. If you are a night owl or want a slight change of scenery, then the Capitol River Cruises night cruise option might appeal to you during the summer months. From Memorial Day to Labor Day, the cruise company has an evening sailing.

Cruise Details

Capitol River Cruises depart from Georgetown at  Washington Harbour  at 31st & K Streets, NW, Washington, D.C. Cruises run hourly, every day, from April through October and during the warmer months there is an additional evening cruise.

Tickets can be purchased in advance online or at the dock. Cash, check, and credit card options are available. Snacks and beverages, including alcoholic selections, are for sale. If you have a private group or plan to have a party, you can charter a cruise.

The  Capitol River Cruise Crab Boat  is another option offered by the same company, which can be chartered for your own crab feast on the Potomac. You can charter this boat for 10 to 40 people for all the Maryland blue crabs you can eat for three or more hours. The per-person cost includes an open bar of beer, wine, non-alcoholic beverages, as well as all-you-can-eat corn, hush puppies, and coleslaw.

More Options

If you are interested in a more leisurely or lengthier cruise and would prefer more amenities or a more luxurious experience, there are a multitude of other sightseeing cruise options. For a higher price, the following boat tour operators offer Potomac cruises with buffet or multi-course dining and entertainment options: Spirit Cruises and Odyssey Cruises .

My parents brought my 87 year old grandfather to visit so instead of walking around the Tidal Basin to see the Cherry Blossoms I thought it would be better for him to see them by boat. HUGE mistake. We wanted to get on the 5 pm boat because we had dinner reservations for 6:30. On a whim, we decided to stop by the dock at 3 pm to see where we needed to go later. The line was ridiculous so we decided to start standing then. TWO HOURS later, we finally got on the boat. Ridiculous. The girl with the clipboard wandering around was useless. The guy on the dock, who supposedly was the owner, was rude and repeatedly gave misleading information. When I complained about standing in line for so long he told me I should have come on a weekday. Never mind the fact that I, like the majority of people in that line, live in DC and have a full-time job. Oh, and if a large group reserves a tour, they get to mosey up to the dock and get on the boat before all the other people who have waited for hours in line. Also, I bought the tickets through their website so I paid full price and had to use the tickets on a specific day. Combine that with the Living Social deal for this company and it was a disaster. Terrible company, terrible service, NEVER EVER take a boat ride with this company. If it were possible to give zero stars, I would because the "cherry blossom" part of the tour meant they moseyed up next to one tree for 45 seconds so you could snap one photo before they moved on. Waste of money, time and not friendly for the elderly.

This a terrible experience. Disorganized and no company rep on site. Long lines and long waits. I would give them a negative 5 stars if possible.

Let me start off by saying, DO NOT GO ON THIS "CRUISE!" The reason I say this is because me and my wife had a not so pleasureable time with Capitol River Cruises (CRC). So I planned this great day of brunch at Tony & Joe's then a nice boat ride. There's like 5 different boat companies that all dock in the same spot so there is no way of knowing which boat is CRC. We finally found out from another boat (that was much nicer than CRC)...so we wait about 40 minutes, no biggie. But as we are waiting, the line behind us is getting longer and longer. We see our boat coming and its about to dock, then all of a sudden this large group of tourists comes to the front of the line just as the boat docks. We see the leader of the tour group whisper something in the captain's ear then he allows the tourits to board before all of us who were standing in line could. That group took up the entire boat and I lost it! I complained to the capatin and boat personnel and all they could tell me was, "we board gorups first, thats the CRC policy. Of course that was a bunch of BS....luckily another CRC boat came up shortly behind that one. So we are on this boat and the seats are green lawn chairs and Im talking the really cheap and flimsy, plastic chairs...that was crazy. The bar is cash only....in 2014, cash only? really? And that 50 minute tour was more like 30, maybe 35 minutes. We made the best of it but it was awful.

Photo of Brian C.

When I had a guest from out of town, I decided to finally take this river cruise as another way to see the experience DC. We arrived when there wasn't a line and asked if there was somewhere we should line up. We were told "no" that there was no line. It seemed weird to me since I had heard about lines before but didn't question the employee who didn't seem interested in talking. We went to Starbucks and came back to find a line. Of course. We stood in line for about 20-30 minutes and finally boarded. The boat itself is tiny and very simple. Th seats are plastic chairs and you can move them, which is nice if you are stuck under the blazing sun. The tour commentary is recorded and minimal and leaves you wanting more. There is nothing wrong with recorded commentary in my opinion but this one can certainly be improved. The trip was 45 minutes long which was just right for the tour. The drinks were over-priced, but of course, aren't they always. If I had to pay for another river cruise, I wouldn't rule out Capitol River Cruises but would look at the others. My main issue was the staff not being more customer service oriented. Please smile and don't let me know you don't to talk to me. Oh and I must say, the views were great!

INCREDIBLY UNPROFESSIONAL! Would give no stars if possible. We booked the crab boat trip with this company for a milestone birthday. Their website indicates that the minimum number of people required is 10, so we lined up 11 people to go and paid our deposit. The owner REPEATEDLY assured us in the weeks leading up to our cruise that we would just need 10 people. He even told us this on the morning of the day before our scheduled cruise. Then suddenly, about 30 hours before our scheduled departure time, we receive an email saying that we will have to cancel or reschedule because the company has decided it's not worth their time. We are now scrambling to make alternative plans. DO NOT BOOK WITH THIS COMPANY!!!

Photo of Helen S.

This was among the worst things I've ever voluntarily done. I felt guilty dragging my bf onto this with me. We had a TravelZoo voucher (two tickets for $12) which is cheap, but in retrospect, I wouldn't have gone on it if you had paid me. The boat is super ghetto and so loud, and also the tour tape is not synced so it would say to look for a monument that wasn't nearby at all. It was especially miserable because it was also a cold day, and I was cursing and muttering under my breath cause all I wanted was to go home.

Photo of Johnny A.

Got a 2 for 1 deal on LivingSocial and went for a cherry blossom cruise on a Saturday morning. An excellent no frills tour of the Potomac with friendly staff and a decent audio guide.

Photo of Anita W.

I wasn't thrilled by this boat tour on the Potomac. They were disorganized with the people waiting at the dock. We'd been waiting in line for 40 minutes, then they encouraged an entire tour bus of people to cut in front of us by reversing the order of the line that had already formed. We were SO angry. All of the people who'd been waiting were in rebellion. Onboard, we were subjected to country western music as we waited, then couldn't hear a word the tour guide said over the engine noise.

Photo of E O.

The Nightingale I and Nightingale II boats are FULL OF SPIDERS....I am talking about dozens of large aggressive spiders. As soon as you sit down they come out and some try to ride their web down onto the table and/or your head. If you are an entomologist or interested in spiders then this is a great cruise for you. Otherwise don't waste your time or money.

Photo of Joe S.

Pros: -Fairly quick tour with interesting facts -Cheap (w/Groupon) Cons: -No organized line -They let a tour company's bus tour skip in front of everyone actually waiting in line (only 16 of about 50+ seats are for people waiting in line) -Cheap plastic chairs -Points-of-interest are on both sides of the boat and some seats are blocked from a view of one side. -Pre-recorded audio tour -Audio tour stops at the turn around (so the entire way back is just a boat ride) -Unfriendly staff The operations were pretty shady, but if you're looking for a decent boat tour of some of the monuments from a different viewing point, this tour wouldn't be your worst choice.

Sights of Elektrostal, Moscow region

2024 Author : Harold Hamphrey | [email protected] . Last modified: 2023-12-17 10:06

In the Moscow region there is a small cozy town Elektrostal. Its sights for the most part have no historical value due to the fact that the city has a relatively small history. But for a visiting tourist or city dweller, they will be of interest. There is something to see, where to go to have an exciting leisure time.

Today the population of the city is 158 thousand people. Until the beginning of the 20th century there were several small workers' settlements here. After the opening of the electrometallurgical and equipment factories, the place began to be called the natural boundary of Calm. The construction of the railway made this settlement accessible, and workers and families flocked here to earn money. In 1925, the station was named Elektrostal, and the rapid increase in population allowed the village to receive the status of a city.

attractions elektrostal photo

The founder of the city is a prominent Russian industrialist Nikolai Vtorov. It was he who opened the plant here, creating, in fact, a city-forming enterprise that is still operating. In Soviet times, it was a closed facility, and it was not easy to get to work here.

Today Elektrostal is a promising industrial city with a great future and a heroic past. It bears the proud name "City of Military and Labor Glory".

You can learn about the sights of Elektrostal with descriptions and photos here. There are places for walking, outdoor activities and cultural development.

sights of the electric steel of the Moscow region

Those who come to the city by train are met by a monument to the metallurgist. It was installed in November 2017 for the 100th anniversary of the Elektrostal plant. The attraction is made in the style of constructivism. The monument quickly won the love of the townspeople, because this city is supported by ordinary workers.

Elektrostal attractions photo with description

Elektrost altsy and the founding father of the plant, Nikolai Vtorov, are honored. In 2002, a monument was opened in honor of him, which became a landmark of the city of Elektrostal. The bronze sculpture is installed on the site where once stood a monument to the leader of the world proletariat, V. I. Lenin. Times change, characters change. Today, the plant, founded a century ago, is the largest in Russia. Vtorov himself, whose fortune was estimated at 60 million rubles in gold, according to Forbes magazine, was the owner of the largest capital at the beginning of the century. He was a banker, an industrialist, an entrepreneur, a man of action.

The monument was erected byinitiative of the townspeople who wished to perpetuate the monument to the great man.

One of the popular places for spending weekends and evenings among citizens and guests of the city is the Park of Culture and Leisure. Here you can ride attractions for children and adults, play slot machines, rollerblade or bike. The park is divided into two zones. Fans of unhurried walks in the fresh air make a promenade on the Quiet Alley, and those who prefer outdoor activities flock to the Entertainment Alley. The park has a summer stage, where concerts and cafes are regularly held.

Elektrostal attractions

Until 1999, there was no central museum among the attractions of Elektrostal in the Moscow Region. The expositions were exhibited in schools, the house of culture, in factory museums. The city was closed, so there was no large influx of tourists and visitors. The appearance of the historical and art museum made it possible for residents and guests of the city to learn a lot of useful information about their native land, the formation of the production process, and the difficult years of the war. The exposition consists of paintings by local artists, historical artifacts, household items, documents, books and much more. The collection is updated regularly. It also hosts outdoor exhibitions, which are always popular with the townspeople.

One of the main attractions of Elektrostal, the photo of which is available to almost every resident or visitor, is the Main Alley. On herpassers-by like to stroll along shady paths, townspeople rest by the fountain after a hard shift at the plant. Flower beds are the decoration of the alley. In 2006, a flower festival was held here for the first time, which has become traditional. Each enterprise of the city and private individuals give residents a real composition of fresh flowers, which pleases with bright colors all summer long. A riot of colors, aromas and a flight of fantasy reigns here. Walking through the park, you can see Snow White with a basket, a bright well, a multi-tiered cake made from fresh flowers, hearts of lovers or a fabulous house. It is almost impossible not to take a photo against the background of these compositions.

There is a cultural center in the city. It hosts performances by local creative teams and visiting stars, performances and circus performances.

In 1971, the ice palace "Crystal" was opened in the city. Almost immediately, a children's and youth hockey team was organized, which gained sports fame. This is the home sports arena for the Elektrostal hockey team. Matches of different levels are held on the ice.

There are sections for children who go in for hockey or figure skating. Citizens come here with their families to cheer for their favorite team or go ice skating.

Elektrostal is a city with a heroic past. During the war years, more than 12 thousand citizens came to the recruiting station and went to the front to defend their homeland. Almost 4 thousand of them did not return from the battle. To these heroesdedicated to the memorial complex with the inextinguishable Eternal Flame, opened in 1968

But the electricians took part in the war in Afghanistan and Chechnya. By decision of the city authorities, their memory is also immortalized in the memorial complex.

It has become a good tradition for newlyweds to lay flowers at this monument.

attractions of the city of Elektrostal

In 1999, a museum and exhibition complex was opened in the city, where, in addition to the exhibition hall, there are numerous circles for children, classes for young people, and a creative workshop. Various festivals, exhibitions, city holidays and other events are held within the walls and on the territory of the complex, which attract many spectators.

Elektrostal attractions

Listing the sights of Elektrostal, it is impossible not to mention the temples. There are several of them in the city: the church of St. John of Kronstadt, St. Andrew's Church, the hospital church of St. Panteleimon. Another new church is being built. In appearance, the temples look ancient, monumental, in the Novgorod style. But they were all built at the end of the 20th century.

Let there be no ancient artifacts among the sights of Elektrostal. But on the other hand, all of them are connected with the history of the city, with everyday work and military exploits of ordinary residents.
