The 10 Best River Cruise Lines in 2022

The best river cruises blend refined onboard accommodations with exciting itineraries along some of the world’s most memorable waterways.

Note: If you’re looking for our most recent recommendations, check out the 2023 list of our favorite river cruise lines.

After pandemic-related challenges at the beginning of last year, river ships got back to what they do best: exploring inland waterways in Europe, the United States, and select other destinations around the world. Travel + Leisure readers enthusiastically returned, setting out on voyages both classic and new.

Every year for our World's Best Awards survey, T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Readers rated individual cruise ships on their cabins and facilities, food, service, itineraries and destinations, excursions and activities, and value. Those assessments were combined to generate results for the cruise lines in six categories, including river cruising.

The top three in the river cruise lines were very close in their scores. Viking, the world's largest river cruise company, moved up two spots into the lead position. Tauck, the well-known tour and river-ship operator, retained its No. 2 spot. "The itinerary was thoughtful as well as instructive," wrote one reader who traveled on the Joy . In the No. 3 spot is Uniworld Boutique River Cruises, with praise that included this rave from one voter who sailed on the Maria Theresa : "This was an exceptional cruise. The staff was excellent. I can't say enough about this cruise line and this ship."

Aqua Expeditions, with journeys on the Peruvian Amazon, ranked No. 4, thanks in part to the sophisticated onboard dining. "Its cuisine is rich in local products and designed by one of the most renowned chefs in Peru," noted one reader. Closer to home, No. 5 American Queen Voyages (formerly American Queen Steamboat Company) earned praise — especially from older adults — for its leisurely cruises on the Columbia, the Mississippi, the Ohio, and other U.S. waterways.

Top-ranked Viking does all the major riverways of Europe, with ships also on the Nile and the Mekong, and, new in 2022, on the Mississippi. Readers praised the line's value proposition and shore experiences that go beyond the norm. The "Thinking Man's vacation" is the way one reader who sailed on a Viking ship on the Rhine river put it.

Find the full list of the best river cruise lines — and more on what sets Viking apart — below.

With its fleet of more than 50 contemporary "longships" on rivers such as the Rhine, the Danube, and the Seine, plus additional ships in Europe, Egypt, and Vietnam, T+L's top-ranked river cruise line for 2022 is often praised for its steadiness. "Having traveled on seven Viking longships that are virtually indistinguishable from one another, I believe it's the consistency that makes Viking one of our favorite ways to travel," said one reader. The longships are light-filled floating boutique hotels with a Scandinavian-design aesthetic, indoor and outdoor dining, and herb gardens up on top. Viking's carefully crafted itineraries and "good value" also received praise from readers. "Met wonderful new friends. Absolutely outstanding service and terrific food," said one fan.

Sail through Europe, Asia, the U.S. and more on one of these exquisite river cruise lines.

The Top River Cruise Lines

Top River Cruises

Not one for the high seas? Explore the world along its rivers instead.

If you'd like to take a cruise but aren't interested in the hustle and bustle of a massive ocean liner, consider a river cruise. River cruises offer the chance to visit lesser-known ports around the world, thanks to the small size and maneuverability of the vessels. These sailings are known to provide exceptional, personalized service, as most welcome fewer than 200 guests at a time. On top of that, you'll spend the majority of your trip exploring a different port each day, as most destinations along the waterways are fairly close together.

Read on to discover the best river cruise lines around the world, with details about where they sail, the number of passengers you can expect onboard, a snapshot of amenities and experiences, and sentiment from recent travelers.

Other amenities and activities span guest lectures, cooking demonstrations, musical performances, libraries, outdoor decks and more. Select Viking riverboats are also equipped with swimming pools, while cabins feature minibars, premium toiletries, purified water and TVs.

On board, you can expect to find mostly English-speaking passengers. Viking's price point generally attracts older crowds in the 55-plus age group, and travelers must be at least 18 years old to cruise on the line.

What travelers say: Recent cruisers thoroughly enjoyed their experience with Viking, praising the scenic shore excursions, top-notch service and comfortable rooms. Some, however, expressed disappointment with the service as well as the food.

Tauck caters to affluent, English-speaking cruisers – primarily Americans in the 55-and-older age group – though you may also find families with adult children on board. The line appeals most to travelers who prefer all the details of their trip to be taken care of for them, versus those who like to plan activities independent of the cruise line.

What travelers say: Recent passengers generally speak highly of their Tauck river cruise experiences, pointing to the exceptional level of organization and spacious, luxurious accommodations. Others said they were underwhelmed for the price.

Previously known as Emerald Waterways, Emerald Cruises transports travelers across some of the most popular rivers in Europe and Asia, including the Danube, the Rhine, the Douro and the Mekong.

What to expect: The cruise fare covers all meals, beverages with lunch and dinner, daily shore excursions − which include more physically rigorous options called EmeraldACTIVE – Wi-Fi access and gratuities.

Emerald operates nine river vessels, all of which boast luxurious public spaces and accommodations with en suite bathrooms and flat-screen TVs. Common-area amenities span heated indoor pools, sun decks, spa and wellness facilities, and a variety of eateries. Onboard fitness classes are available, as are other forms of entertainment. Special rooms and dinner reservations are available for solo travelers.

What travelers say: Cruisers on recent sailings – especially first-time sailors – enjoyed their experiences on Emerald Cruises. High points included the attentive crew members and the stress-free booking and planning process. However, some felt that customer service and communication were subpar.

Number of passengers: 68 to 163 Sails to: Europe, Asia

From the Danube to the Mekong, Australian travel company Scenic Luxury Cruises and Tours offers lavish, all-inclusive river sailings with an emphasis on customization. The more upscale sister brand of Emerald Cruises, Scenic affords travelers the opportunity to do as much or as little as they want while on board and ashore.

What to expect: Enrichment activities are hand-picked by the line's "Journey Designers," and vessels provide a top-notch level of service thanks to their high crew-to-passenger ratios. In fact, each passenger receives a designated butler who can complete nightly turndowns and make laundry arrangements, among other tasks.

Spacious suites on board are larger than those on most other riverboats (ranging from 160 to 510 square feet). High-tech balcony controls allow lodgers to let in as much air as they'd like with the touch of a button. Cruisers will also enjoy special in-room touches like pillow menus, slippers and robes.

When it comes to dining, Scenic sources local ingredients and culinary inspiration from the ports visited on the itinerary to provide an authentic experience. All meals are included in the base cruise fare, along with beverages, gratuities, Wi-Fi access, shore excursions and electric bicycle usage in select destinations.

What travelers say: Recent cruisers were pleased with their experiences aboard Scenic's vessels, praising the spacious cabins, pampering butler service, and knowledgeable crew members and tour guides. However, some travelers were particularly disappointed with the food.

Side view of CroisiEurope Cruises river cruise ship.

Helwin Goetzinger | Courtesy of CroisiEurope

Number of passengers: 22 to 200 Sails to:  Europe, Asia, Africa

CroisiEurope is a family-run French cruise line that has been in business since 1976. This line has more than 50 ships and barges that sail to countries around the world, including Egypt, Cambodia and Spain . Unusual in river cruising, the line operates two custom-built ships that sail on Lake Kariba in southern Africa. Additionally, CroisiEurope has a division that sells barge cruises throughout France on six different canals, such as Burgundy or Provence.

What to expect: CroisiEurope is known for its wide range of destinations and is one of the only river cruise lines that operates custom-built ships on Germany 's Elbe river, the Guadalquivir and Guadiana rivers in Spain and Portugal, and Venice 's canals. Onboard accommodations are relatively basic, which keeps the cruise fare to a budget-friendly minimum. The cruise line aims to provide the best value for money in the cruise industry. Cuisine is focused on French food with some local flair in the main dining room, which is included in the cruise fare.

The passenger mix on a CroisiEurope cruise is relatively international, featuring large contingencies from France, Germany, the U.K. and North America. Announcements are typically given in both French and English. The cruise line sees a mix of older couples and groups as well as younger families, depending on the itinerary and time of year.

What travelers say: Several cruisers echoed that some of CroisiEurope's river ships are due for a refurbishment and that internet connectivity leaves a lot to be desired, while others maintain that the experience was superb.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Size: River cruise ships are smaller in size and the number of passengers they can accommodate, with one lounge and one main dining room being a typical setup.
  • Atmosphere: The overall vibe on a river cruise is more relaxed and far less busy than that of an ocean liner.
  • Onboard entertainment: River cruising is notoriously sleepy at night, with a focus instead on local enrichment like cooking demonstrations or liqueur tastings. Due to the busy schedule of port calls and excursions, most passengers are tired after a long day of sightseeing and don't mind a lack of nightlife.
  • Excursions: Most of your time on a river cruise is spent out exploring the destinations, which can sometimes be two stops in a single day. Passengers can choose from a variety of activities in port – including biking, kayaking and hiking – or explore the destination at a leisurely pace.
  • Cuisine: Cuisine tends to be focused on local specialties but is prepared to accommodate predominantly American tastes. Not every river cruise line offers unlimited drinks, but the majority include beer and wine at lunch and dinner, often showcasing regional varieties.
  • Price: River cruising typically comes at a much higher price point than ocean-based itineraries.
  • American Queen

Note that inclusions can vary by cruise line. For example, Viking rates – while not fully all-inclusive – cover beer and wine at meals and one tour per day, while gratuities and other drink packages are left to the discretion of the guest.

Avalon Waterways, on the other hand, offers a number of included tours in every port on select itineraries that range from cultural or culinary-focused to active.

In terms of inclusions and service ratios (the number of crew on board to guests), the following river cruise lines are considered the most luxurious:

Best river cruise lines around the world

Fran Golden

River cruising is the original slow way to travel, as you cruise the calm waters of inland waterways just like Cleopatra did on the Nile. The best river cruise ships are floating hotels with views galore, such as the castles and vineyards of the Rhine or the rice paddies and villages on stilts along the Mekong.

River ships dock near key attractions and feature mostly-inclusive pricing; fares include such perks as basic daily walking tours and wine and beer at meals. But beyond that standard, there are differences in the products. One person's idea of a great vacation may be extraordinary excursions such as an exclusive dinner in a chateau, while others may want spacious cabins or as much foie gras and French cheese as you can possibly eat. Want to relax in a swimming pool? That's doable on some but not all ships. And some river cruises are much more active than others with, for instance, biking and hiking tours.

Here's a rundown of the best river cruise lines traversing inland waterways around the world.

The world's largest river cruise line, Viking has a fleet that in Europe includes dozens of cutting-edge, 190-passenger "longships" with light-filled atriums, an appealing contemporary Scandinavian decor, and cabins with step-out balconies. An outdoor restaurant on the bow means you never miss a chance to take in unobstructed views.

The value-packed experience is geared toward adults and is consistently high quality. Destinations include all the popular rivers of Europe — such as the Danube, Rhine, Seine, Bordeaux, Rhone, Elbe and Douro — as well as the Nile in Egypt, the Mekong in Vietnam and Cambodia, and the Mississippi.

For those seeking consistency and value, Viking is the best of the mainstream river companies.

AmaWaterways

AmaWaterways offers such popular upscale features as a top-deck swimming pool with swim-up bar and a big focus on cuisine; its multiple dining venues use high-quality ingredients and its Chef's Table experience is focused on fine local food and wine. The 106- to 196-passenger ships in Europe also have a wellness focus with small spas and fitness rooms and a fleet of bikes for use either on your own or on organized excursions.

AmaWaterways' partnership with Adventures by Disney means families are on board select chartered sailings on the Seine, Rhine and Danube. In addition to a big presence on all the main rivers of Europe, the line sails the Mekong and Nile, as well as the Chobe River of Botswana.

AmaWaterways hits a sweet spot for both foodies and active travelers (and families on the Disney sailings).

Uniworld positions itself as a high-end luxury line. Its ships are designed as floating palace hotels, employing marble, Murano glass and expensive fabrics in its over-the-top decor. Don't be surprised if you find yourself lounging in a room decked out in animal prints. The 159-passenger S.S. Catherine on the Rhone and Saone, for instance, boasts a $1 million art collection.

For foodies, foie gras, fresh oysters, regional cheeses and other local delicacies appear on menus. Guests in suites on select ships have butlers on call. Bikes are available to borrow, and the ships have gyms and spas, and, on some ships, lavish indoor pools. Family departures add active excursions, arts and crafts, and visits to amusement parks.

In addition to the major rivers of Europe, Uniworld cruises the less-traversed Po River in Italy (from Venice) and has ships on the Nile and Mekong as well as the Ganges in India.

If you are looking for Old World-style luxury with dramatic flair, Uniworld is your line.

Sleek ships with marble lobbies, mid-century furnishings and impressive art collections mark the Australian-owned Scenic as all about luxurious, high-end river cruising. Butler service is part of the scene, and so are free-flowing cocktails, e-bikes and six dining options – all for a passenger contingent of fewer than 170.

Included shore excursions go beyond the standard tours that most lines offer, such as a visit to the Szechenyi baths in Budapest. If you prefer independent travel, Scenic provides a nifty GPS gadget about the size of a cellphone, loaded with maps and commentary that is automatically activated at points of interest. Most of the ships have a pool on the sun deck, along with a fitness center and spa.

Routes include the Rhine and Danube, the Seine, Saone, Rhone, Garonne and Dordogne in Bordeaux, and Portugal's Douro, as well as the Mekong.

When it comes to an active, contemporary, luxury experience, Scenic is at the top.

Emerald Cruises

danube river cruise company ratings

A sister line to Scenic but priced for budget-conscious travelers, Emerald continues the cool decor on its 182-passenger "Star Ships." The design highlight is an amazing infinity-style indoor/outdoor pool that converts (with a cover) into a movie theater at night.

Fares include most tours, even well-programmed full-day tours with lunch ashore. Destinations include the Danube, Rhine, Main, Rhone, and Douro, as well as the Mekong.

For those watching their pennies, Emerald is the best of the budget-priced ships.

Leading luxury tour operator Tauck has its own fleet of award-winning 84- to 130-passenger river ships cruising the Danube, Douro, Rhine, Rhone and Seine. The big selling point here is that a Tauck tour director and three Tauck cruise directors are on board all departures, assuring that guests are catered to.

The ships deliver great food and wine and beyond-the-norm experiences on shore, such as the chance to sip local varietals in a wine cave. Special family departures — Tauck Bridges — cater to multigenerational families, adding such kid-friendly adventures as a scavenger hunt at the Louvre in Paris. Some staterooms on the newer ships are lofts with high ceilings and a raised seating area; some ships have a Jacuzzi and putting green on the sun deck. Local performers including dance troupes come on board to entertain.

The hand-held, everything-taken-care-of luxury experience that Tauck provides is hard to beat.

Avalon Waterways

danube river cruise company ratings

Avalon is owned by the Globus Family of Brands, a tour operator company, and that experience comes into play on shore, with such VIP experiences as skipping the line at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. Pricing on this line is middle of the road, with everything comfortable, reliable and not overly fussy. That said, on the company's sleek, 166-passenger Suite Ships, you can splurge on a Panorama Suite with sitting areas and glass doors that open to bring the fresh air in.

The company lets you personalize your experience down to the kind of pillows you prefer. All ships have a fitness room and fleet of bikes for tours in places such as Amsterdam and Cochem, Germany. There are also hiking excursions. The ships traverse waterways that include the Seine, Rhine, Danube, Douro, Main, Moselle, Rhone, Saone and Mekong.

Avalon is your best choice in the affordable, active category.

CroisiEurope Cruises

French line CroisiEurope caters to travelers on a tight budget and does river cruising in a friendly European style. Among the differences here is you won't just be cruising with fellow Americans. The passenger contingent is mostly bargain-seekers from France and Germany, and you'll hear onboard announcements in multiple languages. Everything from the food and service to the entertainment caters to that crowd. Some will love the idea of cruising like a European, while others may miss, for instance, a wide breadth of entree choices at dinner.

The family-run line has several dozen mostly older ships that operate on rivers that include the Danube, Rhine, Rhone and Saone but also such less-traversed waterways as the Elbe between Berlin and Prague, France's Loire, Spain's Guadalquivir and the Markermeer in the Netherlands. CroiseEurope also has ships on the Nile, Mekong, and Chobe River in Africa.

Try CroisiEurope if you want to grab super-low bargain fares and see Europe with a local crowd.

Grand Circle Line

Part of tour company Grand Circle Travel, this line is a popular affordable choice for travelers age 55-plus in Europe. The fleet of 46- to 140-passenger ships cruises waterways that include the Seine, Rhine, Mosel, Main, Danube and Rhone. Always onboard are Grand Circle program directors supplementing the onboard team and assuring a certain amount of handholding on ship and shore; your American tastes and expectations will be catered to. The line focuses attention on onboard enrichment, such as lectures, dance performances and cooking demonstrations. On shore, Grand Circle's signature experiences are a home visit with a local family and a school visit.

Grand Circle is a top choice company for solo travelers because the ships feature a good number of small cabins designed and priced for one, plus reduced single-supplement pricing for solos who want larger rooms.

American Cruise Lines

danube river cruise company ratings

American Cruise Lines offers cruises on more U.S. waterways than any other river line. Of course, the company's fleet of U.S.-flagged 100- to 190-passenger river ships (including authentic paddlewheelers) travels the popular Mississippi and Columbia and Snake rivers in the Pacific Northwest. But it also offers itineraries along the rivers of the San Francisco Bay Area (including a stop in Napa Valley's wine country), Florida's east coast (visiting Amelia Island and St. Augustine) and New York (offering overnight trips on the Hudson). Multi-state trips via the Ohio, Tennessee and Cumberland Rivers round out the offerings.

The crew is all-American, and the ships play up the American theming. Civil War theme cruises are particularly popular.

The river cruises command big prices — from about $575 per person, per night for an ambiance that is comfortably upscale. Particularly on the newer ships, guests stay in big, hotel-like staterooms with indoor sitting areas and balconies (on the 175-passenger American Symphony, for instance, cabins range from 250 to 650 square feet). Local entertainment comes on board, the food is often locally sourced, and cocktail parties are included in the cruise fare.

These river cruises attract mostly older travelers. There are no bars, but that's a bonus in terms of socializing. Everyone goes to the cocktail parties, and getting to know your fellow passengers is a big part of the experience.

Aqua Expeditions

danube river cruise company ratings

Crowd-free and high-end luxury cruises are this line's calling card both on the Peruvian Amazon and the Mekong. On the 32- to 40-passenger ships, you are embraced in designer decor and expanses of glass, so you don't miss any views. Exquisite gourmet cuisine in both destinations is overseen by top chefs known for their award-winning land-based restaurants, with local ingredients a focus. Tours ashore (sometimes two a day) are often via private, 10-passenger skiffs.

For the privilege of sailing with this line, you may have to pay $1000 per person, per night. The shortest sailings are three nights on the Amazon. Families with kids ages 7 and up are welcome.

Aqua Expeditions is hands down the best luxury product on the Amazon and Mekong; intimate cruising at its finest.

We had a generally good experience. Most new passengers board in Engelhartszell, but 17 passengers boarded the ship in Vienna. We boarded in Vienna and didn’t receive new passenger orientation, which includes basic ship, safety and excursion presentations. The crew was very friendly, although it was primarily a German language oriented cruise lines.

Luxury danube river cruise reviews.

The tour was very good, the crew were excellent, very helpful, approachable and informative and always available. The tours were great and the Danube is wonderful to cruise on. The food was of excellent quality but the fact that there was no choice on the menu was poor and we feel there should have been an earlier sitting for dinner, and lunch could have been a buffet. The accommodation was adequate but the shower was totally inadequate. We enjoyed the cruise
Al-Rosa did an excellent job. Food was good and lots of it, the cabin was clean and comfortable. The staff were always friendly and helpful and Sabrina did a great job of looking after everyone and made sure that we were always at the right place at the right time. The tours were great and we enjoyed our evenings in the lounge with music and quizzes by Erich. We had a great holiday!

AmaWaterways Danube River Cruise Review

Mimi Slawoff

The writer was hosted.

It was a warm, sunny day in September and I had just finished a guided walking tour in Bratislava, Slovakia. This charming waterfront city was our second port stop on a seven-night AmaWaterways Melodies of the Danube River cruise onboard AmaSonata. After the tour, my sights were set on a dip in the swimming pool on the ship’s sundeck. The pool became my go-to place after each excursion that week. Amazingly, few people took advantage of the pool so I usually had it to myself. But the pool was just one of many amenities and services that made this AmaWaterways river cruise  an enjoyable one.

The Melodies of the Danube itinerary began in Budapest (Hungary) and traveled to Bratislava (Slovakia), Austria (Vienna, Weissenkirchen – Ybbs – Grein, and Linz); and Germany (Passau to Vilshofen). Pre-cruise land options in Budapest and post-cruise extensions to Prague can be added to the cruise for an additional fee.

About AmaWaterways

Rudi Schreiner, AmaWaterways’ co-founder and president, Kristin Karst, the line’s co-founder and executive vice president, and the late Jimmy Murphy launched the cruise line in 2002.  After years of working at other existing river cruise companies, Schreiner and Karst leaned into their own European background, passion for good food, wine, wellness programs, and the idea of freedom of choice to introduce innovative features for the family-owned and operated AmaWaterways. Their goal was to offer a well-rounded healthy and active river cruise experience that included hiking and biking excursions.

“They wanted to have a river cruise that incorporates all these things,” said Brenda Kyllo, the godmother of AmaSonata.

On my cruise, I had the pleasure of sailing with Brenda, who said that Rudi and Kristin spend 50 percent of their time sailing on the ships, interacting with and getting feedback from guests and crew.

The result? Healthy food and active excursions have attracted a younger crowd, lowering the average age of their guests to about 55 to 65 (about 10 years younger than previously). In addition, with a minimum age of 4 years for sailing with AmaWaterways in Europe, the cruise line is seeing more young people and multi-generational families on their river cruises.

AmaWaterways’ Itineraries

AmaWaterways has over two dozen luxury ships that sail the rivers of Europe, Asia, Africa, Cambodia, and Vietnam. Themed cruises include iconic Christmas markets, Blue Danube Discovery, Gems of Southeast Europe, and Grand Danube Cruise. Wine connoisseurs can discover the Taste of Bordeaux, and the Flavors of Burgundy (debuting in 2024), two of several river cruises in France.

Sailing on AmaSonata

Built in 2014, the cruise ship has 82 outside cabins and cozy public spaces. There’s an elegant Panoramic Lounge for entertainment and programs, a comfortable library, three dining options, a sundeck with a heated pool and swim-up bar, a fitness center, and a spa and hair salon. In the reception lobby guests check in and out for excursions. There’s also a small gift shop.

AmaSonata Stateroom

I smiled as I walked into my spacious stateroom and saw that I had a private balcony and a sitting area by a French balcony (the doors open for fresh air). I also appreciated the large marble bathroom, a wardrobe with a full-length mirror, and a bed with luxurious linen and pillows. Amenities include a mini fridge, a hair dryer, free wifi, a desk, and a flat-screen TV (not that I needed it with the beautiful passing scenery).

River cruises offer an excellent opportunity to visit not only Europe’s majestic capitals of the Danube but also small medieval cities and towns. Each day there are several shore excursions to choose from. All are included in the cruise fare. And most are half-day so there’s time to discover port towns on your own or relax on the ship. And I loved that I could change my mind at the last minute and switch excursions.

I enjoyed chatting with Cesario Santos, the cruise manager, who was always available to offer tips for choosing excursions and planning our day in ports.  “We try to come up with options for people. We’re very flexible,” he told me.

The front desk in reception was also helpful. When we were docked in Budapest, there was downtime in the afternoon and I was interested in visiting a thermal bathhouse. There were two within walking distance. The young woman in reception suggested the Ruda bathhouse (where locals go). I took her advice and spent two glorious hours soaking in pools in the bathhouse that dates back over 450 years.

Hungary’s capital (dubbed Queen of the Danube) is an exciting city to visit. It was my first visit to Budapest so I joined the guided city tour. We drove through the historic city center, stopped in Heroes’ Square, and later walked up numerous steps to Castle Hill. It was worth the climb to see Matthias Church (Coronation church of Buda) and Fisherman’s Bastion . From there, we had panoramic views of Budapest. I also did some souvenir shopping in the shops.

SheBuysTravel Tip : While docked in Budapest, be sure to shop for souvenirs and regional food items at the historic Great Market Hall.

Bratislava, Slovakia

Slovakia’s capital, Bratislava, is a pretty, waterfront city that’s walking distance from the ship. I took the guided tour and then explored on my own, stopping for a gelato on my way back to the ship. Public art includes a quirky “man in the street” statue.

Although there was a city bike tour available, I opted for the bus and walking tour that brought us to Vienna’s historic town. It’s a fun place to spend a few hours shopping and enjoying sausages stuffed with cheese. While there, Cesario rode up on his bike with a bag of Mozart (Mozartkugel) chocolates for us! I found a store that sells them and bought a bag of yummy chocolates to bring home.

Wachau Valley

The Wachau Valley is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with vineyards, apricot orchards, a little town, and castles. It’s also home to the Melk Abbey. I chose the excursion to the medieval town of Dürnstein  on the banks of the Danube River. Narrow cobblestone streets are lined with boutiques, chocolate shops, and eateries. I bought a pair of earrings made with stones from the Danube River from a local merchant who said she makes all the jewelry in her shop.

At a small winery, we sat at long tables decorated with softly glowing candles for wine tasting, and later, apricot tasting.

Some guests opted for a hike to the Dürnstein fortress while others took a guided bike tour and pedaled about 15 miles along the romantic Danube River.

While docked in Linz, we had a choice to join a local walking tour or take a full-day tour of either Salzburg  or Cesky Krumlov, in the Czech Republic. It was a difficult decision but I was excited to see Salzburg. Our first stop was in the small town of Mondsee, situated on the shores of Lake Mondsee. Our guide Julia told us that St. Michael’s Church was the site for the wedding in The Sound of Music .

After Mondsee, we left for Salzburg (the name means salt castle or city), Mozart’s hometown. We visited Mirabell Gardens , Old Town, Hohensalzburg Fortress (I rode the funicular to the top), and other top sites. Along the way, Julia pointed out locations where “The Sound of Music” was filmed. (I was surprised to learn that Austrians aren’t familiar with the movie title. Rather, it’s known as “The Trapp Family.”)

That evening we took in a Mozart & Strauss concert presented by the Hofburg Orchestra at the Hofburg Palace concert hall. It was a lovely way to cap off an enchanting stay in Austria.

Passau, Germany

This beautiful baroque city is surrounded by the Danube, Ilz, and Inn rivers. Known as the City of Three Rivers, Passau is a fun Bavarian city to explore. And since the ship is docked at the waterfront, Passau is easily accessible.

A group of us took a guided walking tour with Daniel, a Passau native and high school teacher. We walked along narrow cobblestone streets lined with cafes and bicycles (this is a university town, after all) to Old Town where St. Stephen’s Cathedral houses the largest organ in Europe.

Dining on AmaSonata

The cuisine was excellent and reflected each region we visited. For example, in Budapest, the chef prepared tasty goulash. Austrian and German dishes featured a variety of sausages, sauerkraut and potatoes. All the food is fresh – baked or made onboard. There is no processed food onboard and more grains are integrated into breakfast bowls.

We usually ate in the Main Restaurant, where guests dine together at large tables. But the restaurant also has cozy alcoves for small groups. In the Panoramic Lounge, a bistro breakfast and bistro lunch are available for a quick bite (especially handy in the mornings before excursions). An all-day tapas menu and afternoon tea are also available here. The Chef’s Table (at no additional charge) is a delight with a fixed menu. Guests can reserve the Chef’s Table upon boarding the cruise ship.

Onboard Entertainment

After dinner, we gathered in the Panoramic Lounge for port talks and entertainment. Some evenings featured Petar, the onboard musician, and other times regional performers. While in Budapest, the Hungarian Folklore Show featured local performers who came on board.

What’s Next for AmaWaterways

After the successful launch of the larger AmaMagna ship in 2019, AmaWaterways plans to increase its presence on Europe’s Danube, Douro, and Rhine rivers by 20 percent in the next two years. The company plans to introduce the AmaMagdalena and AmaMelodia on Colombia’s Magdalena River, and AmaLilia on Egypt’s Nile River.

Cruise Reviews

Find out more about the Viking experience from our guests.

danube river cruise company ratings

A truly memorable experience

This was our first Viking River Cruise but it will not be our last. Traveling with my husband, and another couple on the Danube Waltz cruise, we were all new to Viking, but on day 2, we were planning when we would return for another cruise and ranked our future destination choices. The crew on the Viking Vali was amazing from the moment we stepped onboard. Our absolutely fantastic cabin steward, our fun-loving Program Director, and the entire restaurant staff, never hesitated to greet us by name, answer any question, and go above and beyond to make this trip a truly memorable experience. The dining service and food was consistently the best we have had on any vacation, and the ports and excursions were all unique and fascinating. During our shore excursions, having the opportunity to speak with the local guides really made an impression on us and helped us fall in love with the special destinations like Budapest, Chesky Krumlov, Vienna, Linz, Krems, Bratislava, and Passau. Thank you Viking, you are truly the best and we can't wait until our next river cruise with you.

Satisfied Guest

Better than we had ever expected..

We picked the Danube Waltz and had no idea what to expect, especially this time of the year. The itinerary was better than we had ever expected; the entire crew were very helpful and just wanted to serve us day and night; the food was delicious, our Program Director was very informative; all included tours were outstanding (loved all the churches we visited and the Abbey in Krems) and even the weather was good. This itinerary was rich in culture. I learned a lot from all tour guides. God willing, next I plan to coordinate a family reunion on another Viking River Cruise for 2023. Thank you again for a rich memorable vacation.

Richard Crowell

Amazing voyage.

This was our third Viking river cruise. They are always amazing! They hire the most caring employees. The whole on board staff were so friendly.

Incredible frist voyage with Viking.

This was our first cruise. It was incredible. Everything was above and beyond our expectations. Everyone was wonderful. The food, crew, tours and guides were great. the attention to detail and care was outstanding. We are planning our next trip. The people who referred us to Viking said once you travel with Viking, no-one else will ever measure up. They were right.

James & Mew Ling

Expectations were far exceeded.

After experiencing over 16 ocean cruises, my wife and I decided to try our FIRST river cruise and we chose Viking. Our overall expectations were far exceeded! The ship was beautifully maintained, the crew service was wonderful, the food was excellent, and the six ports of call were ideal sightseeing spots -- 3 large cities and 3 picturesque medium/smaller towns. All six morning tour guides were entertaining and informative. We rode public transit in the afternoon/evening during our free time to explore on our own. The ship's safety protocols & procedures were impeccable, with daily covid-virus testing & sensible masking guidelines. A negative test result document was given to us upon departure to show the airline for our flight home. All our needs were met & satisfied; MANY THANKS to the entire crew. We recommend Viking River Cruises, and we plan to sail with them again.

Strong recommendation

Great experience.

Madeline Andrew

We could not have been more pleased and delighted..

My husband and I took this cruise to celebrate our 20th anniversary. We are avid independent travelers but decided it might be fun to relax and let someone else do the planning for once. We had no idea what to expect. This was our first Viking and first river cruise and we could not have been more pleased and delighted. The entire staff was top notch, our cruise director was outstanding and our chef kept us fabulously fed. Our off-ship tour guides were all excellent, entertaining and informative. This cruise experience far exceeded our expectations. We will definitely cruise with Viking again and not soon enough. Highly, highly, highly recommend.

Annie & J.D.

Amazing trip.

This was our first Viking cruise and we were absolutely delighted with everything. Our cabin was very comfortable, meals were delicious and the excursions were expertly organized and led by knowledgeable guides. We especially enjoyed Budapest, Vienna and cruising along the beautiful Danube. We've already booked another itinerary for next year which continues down the Danube from Prague to Paris.

Ralph Martinez

Best vacation ever.

Best vacation ever, they don’t nickel and dime you to death. The evening entertainment was great . . . we sang and danced like we were still young and we felt young.

Marjorie Wright

Our cruise was enhanced.

I have to tell you that our cruise was enhanced by the warmth and friendliness of the staff and crew of Viking Ingvi.

Everyone was very attentive

The ship was lovely, very well laid out, and everyone was very attentive to the needs of the guests. Our stateroom steward readily provided anything we asked for and was never intrusive. Our stateroom had plenty of storage. I enjoyed the cruise enough to book Rhine Getaway for this year and I am looking forward to it.

Steve Thompson

Everything was brilliant..

Our first river cruise and it was perfect. The ship, the staff, the food, the tours, the scenery—everything, from start to finish, was brilliant! Would particularly like to thank the Viking rep who assisted my 85-year-old mother during her airport transfer at the end of the cruise in Budapest. She did not leave until she was absolutely sure my mother and her bags were checked in and properly taken care of. Thank you very much!

Hernando & Teryl

Thank you, viking.

What a perfect 50th Anniversary gift.

Douglas Hottel

Excellent, informed local guides..

Our first Viking cruise and it was amazing. Superb food and drink; excellent, informed local guides. No effort was spared by the staff to make our cruise enjoyable. We are already planning our next cruise with you.

Staff did a fantastic job.

We did the Danube Waltz and it was fabulous. Every member of the staff did a fantastic job. The tour guides were very knowledgeable.

True Spencer

Best service ever..

We had the most wonderful cruise, the best food and waitstaff ever, the most beautiful scenery. After the cruise we took the extended trip to Prague and stayed at the most opulent hotel ever. When we left for the airport a representative from Viking went all the way to the airport with us to be sure that we got off okay and went back to America rather than somewhere else. Best service ever.

Teresa & Dennis Gerencser

Very relaxing..

Fabulous trip. Everything was perfect... and I am very picky. Our first time doing this type of trip and from the pick up at the airport until we left, we were treated wonderfully. The staff are very professional, knowledgeable and accommodating… Food was great, Program Director was great, as well as our bartending staff. Recommend the beverage package... Very relaxing on the upper deck... Tours were rated according to activity level which was nice... We are planning another Viking cruise as I write this. A truly relaxing, wonderful trip!

Best cruise experience.

This is best cruise experience that I have ever had… The Captain and staff could not say no to any request.

Jim from Florida

Exceeded our expectations..

This is our second river cruise on Viking. I cannot say enough about the great service staff… Each person was both professional and knowledgeable. Our tour guides were the best. Both cruises we took exceeded our expectations. Since my wife cannot walk distances or climb stairs easily, the leisure tours on this cruise were arranged that she could partake in… Hopefully we may be able to take another cruise in a few years. Overall, a 9+ on service, planning and all aspects of ship travel.

Viking has set the bar high.

My wife and I had the pleasure of sailing the Danube for Thanksgiving. Viking has set the bar high for our first cruise. The food was excellent; the staff was friendly and took care of our every need. The city tours were first class and the guides well informed. Not only do we plan on sailing on Viking again but we are seriously considering going on this exact same trip.

Lawrence Crowder

The viking staff was amazing..

Our recent trip was our first experience with river cruises. We will definitely be returning again. From the moment we booked our cruise, to the final day, the Viking staff was amazing. Our booking representative made sure that all the details were taken care of, the Viking staff at the airports were extremely helpful, and the Director and staff on our ship were wonderful. The itinerary was so much more than we could have imagined! The local tour guides made each day memorable. The time in each port was perfect, and our extension in Prague was magical. Thank you Viking for an anniversary like no other. We will be back!

Will probably do another cruise in the futrue.

We enjoyed the cruise very much. Will probably do another one sometime in future.

Staff & tours were exceptional.

The service, the accommodations, food, staff and tours were exceptional. Very nice training for guests to be able to navigate. You didn't miss any detail!

Delicious food with many choices.

Great staff—friendly, caring, knowledgable. Delicious food with many choices. Beautiful port and lovely ship.

Our experience was so luxurious.

We sailed our first cruise with Viking River Cruises, on the Longship Modi… We could not believe our experience was so luxurious. Everything from service to food to tours was all 5-star luxury! We chose the Danube Waltz because of the Christmas Markets. I have to say we were not disappointed. Every city had their own version and each was more spectacular than the last. Time flew by. The young man that cared for our room was phenomenal... We had a standard Veranda room and could walk outside to view the architecture and nature along the river... We made lifelong friends... I can’t recommend Viking enough. We are actually going on our second cruise in September 2017 for our 39th wedding anniversary... We are seeing the world in the best possible method available and each year brings somewhere new. Go now and don’t look back!

Every step left a lasting impression.

This was our first river cruise and it will be difficult to exceed the exceptional experience we had on our trip. From Budapest to Passau, every stop left a lasting impression on both of us. The staff, the food, the itinerary, the ship, the tour guides and the friendships we made on the ship helped to make this our best trip. Thank you for your hospitality and service.

Bill and Anne Park

Exceeded our very high expectaions..

This cruise exceeding our very high expectations. The entire crew and staff were very efficient, friendly, flexible and attentive. The food was absolutely fantastic. The tour guides were exceptional, very personable, knowledgeable and helpful...We’ve recommended Viking and this particular cruise to many friends and family members.

Everything was perfect!

If you are contemplating a river or Christmas Market cruise, then Viking is your answer! We were fortunate to sail from Passau to Budapest (Danube Waltz), with a 2-night post-extension stay in Budapest. Every aspect of this vacation was perfect . . . the Veranda Stateroom, the exemplary service, the regional food and spirits, the informative tours, our airports transfers, the entertainment, the many ports and breathtaking views, and, of course, the Christmas Markets themselves. We were spoiled during our post-extension stay at an amazing, 5-star hotel. And just like on the ship, everything was perfect!

Already planning our next cruise with viking..

We talked about doing a cruise with Viking ever since we were made aware of them back in 2008. So we decided on Danube Waltz. We just arrived home yesterday and are still floating on air! The spectacular time we had is almost beyond description! First, we LOVED our stateroom. It was the basic 150 square foot space. This room was so well designed, so well laid out, so modern, clean and efficient, that we felt like we were in a much larger hotel room. Everything about the cruise was as well designed and planned as the room. Our Longship was beautiful, modern, but with a casualness that only enhanced our adventure. We met new friends and always had someone new to share a conversation with but could still be alone on a beautiful deck to read, relax or spend time together. But the most extraordinary aspect was the quality, professionalism and friendliness of the crew. The Viking staff takes hospitality to new levels! From the Hotel Manager to the bartender to the Concierge and the housekeeping staff ... all let it be known that they were there for you. The gem in the hospitality crown was our Program Director, who had more energy than any five people put together. He obviously thoroughly enjoys his job and the guests because the excursions he planned, the knowledge he shared and the caring he showed toward us all could not have been achieved without authentic enthusiasm. I could go on and on but I will say this: we are already planning our next cruise with Viking. We can't think of a better way to see Europe than the way Viking does from a river and seeing the superior level of quality, thoroughness, hospitality and professionalism, we would never consider any other company but Viking to host our tour. Thank you, Viking! Can't wait to do it again!

Mike & Eileen Broader

Our 5-star cruise..

This was our first cruise of any kind; since we wanted a more intimate environment than on an oceangoing vessel, our Viking Longship was perfect! It is state of the art with its very elegant Scandinavian design, lighting and all the "attitude" of a 5-star ship. Our fellow guests were delightful, and we found that table-hopping at meals on board opened the door to friendships that we shall treasure forever; everyone had such diverse and interesting backgrounds. The food was 5-star-local, fresh and deliciously prepared under our Executive Chef, and the wines and beers served gratis during lunch and dinner were also delicious.   The daily excursions and professionally (and humorously) narrated walking tours through the cities and towns were also 5-star! The sights, sounds and aromas of each town were enchanting and so foreign to us that learning about the people, buildings, history and agriculture/manufacturing was almost overwhelming. We took thousands of pictures. The jewel of our trip was our Program Director, who was hilarious, engaging, warm and brilliant, and there was not a misstep with programming or timing that we could detect. The entire crew was first class. Planning our next trip immediately, and bringing neighbors!

Tom & Suzanne Martin

Smooth sailing on the danube..

Viking knows how to transport you in a way that is pampering and relaxing, yet still energetic. The tours were so informative, the guides so professional, and the bus transportation, state of the art! Our wait staff was always upbeat, great at remembering our names and very attentive. The meals were diverse and delicious; I am still having withdrawals from the yummy desserts. To make the trip even more fun, our incredible Program Director was probably a former stand-up comedian. His sense of humor was contagious. Smooth sailing on the Danube, what a wonderful memory! This was my second Viking experience and my husband’s first. We are going to be scheduling our next cruise with Viking.

Tom & Sally Hoey

Viking took care of everything..

Viking Legend is a beauty! Viking took care of everything from booking our flights to airport transfers at both ends. Meal service was first class all the way; food was fabulous with house and local wines included. The breakfast buffet was awesome with the best selections being the European breakfast choices. Housekeeping checked and refreshed the rooms twice a day and provided each guest a liter bottle of water daily at no extra cost. The bathroom came complete with elegant lemon verbena soaps and toiletries. The evening chamber orchestra concert in Vienna was elegant! And the river tour itself...Bratislava was an enchanting surprise and we loved the romance of Salzburg. Viking takes care of you every step of the way and has totally spoiled us. We will be taking a Rhine cruise next year.

George & Kathy Morris

A wonderful waltz..

We could not have been more impressed or better served than we were last week as we journeyed from Prague to Passau, Linz and Salzburg, Melk and Dürnstein, Vienna, Bratislava and Budapest on Viking Prestige. Every aspect of the trip exceeded our expectations and it seemed the ship’s staff could not do enough to ensure our comfort and satisfaction. The cruise was truly a wonderful "waltz"!

Linda Chambers

Absolutely perfect..

We just returned from an extended stay in Budapest, after taking our first ever Viking cruise...it was absolutely perfect!

Loretta LeBar

Nothing like it..

There is nothing like a Viking cruise! Awesome staff, great venues.

Cindy, Bryn, Vanessa & Kendra

The most wonderful time..

We had the most wonderful time on our Danube River cruise. I would encourage anyone who loves great architecture and beautiful cities to take this cruise. The food was wonderful and the on board staff was incredible. We met many great people and would do it again.

Laurie Grier

A most memorable day..

Sailing through the Wachau Valley with Viking in April was one of the most memorable days of my life!

June Hasenjager

Can't wait..

Just got back from Budapest and can’t wait to book next year’s cruise with Viking!

Great tours, great people, great value.

Penny Nelson & Bobbi Meyers

What a fabulous time..

What a fabulous cruise. We can’t say enough about the ship, the staff, the tour guides and especially the food! The tour guides were so knowledgeable; they knew everything about each city and answered every question our group had. The excursion to Salzburg was incredible. It snowed and felt like a winter wonderland. We simply can’t rave enough about our trip and can’t wait to take another cruise with Viking. Once you’ve been on a Viking river cruise you won’t go back to the big ships.

John & Barbara Johnson

Viking always goes the extra mile..

During our stay at the Prague Hilton, we had made dinner plans with another couple. The gentleman uses a wheelchair, and one of your staff members was extremely helpful in getting us across the cobblestones and down the stairs to the restaurant. He then made arrangements with the restaurant to help us return to the hotel. He worked overtime to help us out. This has been typical of all the Viking staff, always going the extra mile.

Betty and Cloyd Phillips

We are hooked on viking..

We had the opportunity to cruise on the Viking Pride for the Christmas Markets along the Danube. This was a fabulous cruise. The destinations varied from small villages to major cities in four countries. The guides were extraordinary as was the entire crew. Everything was perfect and every crew member went out of their way to make it a wonderful experience. We are definitely hooked on Viking.

Yelena & Gregory Piatigorsky

Felt like a fairy tale..

It was a very classy trip. The snow and Christmas lights made it feel like a fairy tale. Everything was excellent; the ship’s crew treated us like kings and every meal was delicious. All the tours were organized and guided beautifully. We will definitely be traveling again with Viking.

Grace Stella, Rosemary Hadlow & Lorraine Lubatti

The whole operation was a class act..

We loved this trip. Everyone who works for Viking, from the reservation staff to the crew on board the ship, goes above and beyond to ensure that you have the best vacation possible. The whole operation was a class act. We have already booked another cruise! We will be on your Portraits of Southern Francecruise next year.

Marianne Chorba & Kate Taylor

Viking should be very proud..

The entire crew worked as a team and demonstrated remarkable efforts to provide smooth sailing for us. Congratulations to the program director, dining staff, front desk, room service and the rest of the crew. They did Viking proud! Viking should be very proud of their employees who represented the company with respect and honor. We will spread the word that Viking is the best.

Susan D. Taylor

Very satisfied customer.

The entire crew deserves commendation as they demonstrated teamwork throughout the cruise! We highly recommend Viking River Cruises because you stand behind what you sell and put the customers first. My sincerest gratitude, for I am a very satisfied customer.

Ama Waterways review: A river cruise on the delightful Danube

danube river cruise company ratings

Lured out of bed by the promise of a mug of piping hot coffee just down the hall, I rubbed the sleep out of my eyes and yawned as I casually pulled back the curtains to let the sun stream in over our balcony.

With a start, I gasped and was suddenly wide awake as the panoramic windows revealed one of Europe’s most quintessential sights spread out in front of me: the town of Dürnstein, Austria, complete with its iconic blue and white Baroque church tower surrounded by the Wachau Valley vineyards and the ruins of a medieval castle perched on the hilltop.

Ama Waterways review of Danube river cruise

Dürnstein is so photogenic that it’s often featured in ads for river cruises on the Danube, which is exactly how we’d found ourselves sailing past it during this ethereal morning with Ama Waterways.

Overnight, our sleek ship the AmaSonata silently glided along the tranquil river as we slept, revealing a brand new destination with the beginning of each day.

AmaSonata

The opportunity to easily see so many different places is one of the advantages of a European river cruise, where guests only unpack once then get to enjoy the highlights of multiple countries throughout the week without lifting a finger (or suitcase).

On this voyage Melodies of the Danube we saw Hungary, Slovakia, Austria, Czechia and Germany, often anchoring right in a capital city for easy access to all the best sights.

danube river cruise company ratings

Ama Waterways river cruises

Ama Waterways is an elevated small cruise ship experience, with a strong focus on cuisine and incredible attention to detail from the worldly staff.

danube river cruise company ratings

The company has nearly two dozen ships exploring European rivers like the Duoro, Rhine and Moselle, while a handful of others navigate waterways in exotic locales including Egypt, Botswana, Colombia, Vietnam and Cambodia.

With such a variety of far flung itineraries it’s no wonder Ama has plenty of repeat guests: on our voyage, we met a Canadian couple who has sailed with them more than 50 times!

danube river cruise company ratings

The relatively low guest count ensures attentive service ( AmaSonata holds 162 passengers, and during our late-October cruise there were less than 70 guests–most sailings have an average of 156), and you don’t have to spend a dime on board.

All meals, beer and wine while dining and a nightly happy hour are included, as well as a variety of tours each day. The only exception is that some itineraries include an optional excursion, such as the classical concert in Vienna some people on our cruise opted to pay extra for.

danube river cruise company ratings

There’s also free wi-fi, a shockingly affordable laundry service, nightly entertainment like opera singers and string trios, and the myAmaCruise app where guests get all of the information about the voyage at their fingertips.

For those up for a bit of adventure, Ama is also one of the best in class when it comes to wellness and active experiences with complimentary bike rentals, hiking and cycling tours and even a dedicated on-board trainer to lead complimentary fitness classes. Heck, the AmaMagna even has a full size pickleball court on the sun deck!

danube river cruise company ratings

Ama Waterways ships

Forget those mega cruises AKA floating hotels–instead, Ama bills its ships as ‘floating sanctuaries’ for a more intimate experience.

danube river cruise company ratings

Staterooms range from 155 to 350 square feet, and up to 710 sq ft on the wider AmaMagna .

While there isn’t as much storage space in the cabins as I’ve seen on similar ships from Viking and Windstar , the spacious bathroom, french balcony and full balcony (a normally rare occurrence) more than made up for it.

danube river cruise company ratings

AmaSonata has two restaurants, a library, lounge and bar, along with massage rooms, a salon and well-equipped gym.

The top deck boasts a heated pool with a swim-up bar, and we often found ourselves gravitating to the cushy loungers which turned out to be the perfect place to curl up for a midday nap or admire landmarks like Devin Castle as we sailed out of Bratislava.

danube river cruise company ratings

Tours on an Ama Waterways river cruise

Ama Waterways cruises are set up so you can be as busy–or relaxed–as you want.

Each day brings a new destination (sometimes two, as we experienced in Linz, Austria when we could also enjoy a day trip to Salzburg or Cesky Krumlov ), and there are a variety of guided tours to choose from should you choose to head out and explore.

danube river cruise company ratings

Each stop has some sort of city tour, and those who aren’t up for navigating cobblestone streets can join the more laid-back ‘gentle walker’ group or a food-focused excursion to sample local specialties.

Want to kick it up a notch?

In cities like Bratislava and Passau we eschewed bus rides in favour of hiking up to castles, and one of my absolute favourite days was the 16 mile bike ride through the Wachau Valley. We cycled along the Danube as soft light illuminated the vineyards where the scent of sweet grapes wafted over us, ending at the Benedictine Melk Abbey to admire its sunshine-yellow facade.

Cycling past vineyards in the Wachau Valley

Some of the guides we had were absolutely stellar, like Pavol Krajcer in Bratislava who expertly wove historical details with personal stories about his own life and his family’s experience during the division of the former Czechoslovakia, often in comedic fashion.

danube river cruise company ratings

Ama also offers pre or post cruise land packages where all the details are taken care of to extend your trip, from luxury hotels to transfers to activities.

danube river cruise company ratings

Dining on an Ama Waterways Danube river cruise

One of the areas where Ama Waterways really shines is the food–truly some of the best cuisine I’ve ever experienced on a cruise ship.

danube river cruise company ratings

With an emphasis on serving up regional dishes and wine pairings alongside comfort foods us North Americans are used to (yes, you can get a burger anytime), dining on board is sometimes an hours-long event.

Multi-course menus are prepared by expert chefs, and Ama’s European ships are members of the prestigious culinary society La Chaîne des Rôtisseurs.

danube river cruise company ratings

We slurped up goulash in Hungary, tucked into warm apple strudels in Austria, and noshed on pretzels paired with beer in Germany during an Oktoberfest celebration. Prost!

Globe Guide tip: Sign up for one of the first Chef’s Table dinners when you board. This reservation-only experience is in a more intimate setting than the main restaurant, and it’s a great way to meet other passengers.

danube river cruise company ratings

It’s also worth mentioning the nightly happy hour, which was a wonderful way to cap off a day of adventures and catch up with fellow guests ahead of dinner and the daily briefing from our cruise manager. Cocktails, wine, beer and champagne flow freely during that hour, and are all complimentary–yes, even the likes of old fashioneds, cosmos and martinis.

danube river cruise company ratings

More to love about an Ama Waterways cruise

I was seriously impressed with how nimble Ama was at adapting when necessary: when we were scheduled to sail out of Budapest , unseasonably hot temperatures resulted in the Danube’s water levels being too low for river cruises. With just a couple days notice they ended up moving the ship to Komarno, Slovakia, arranged transport for the 90 minute drive, and still offered Budapest tours for anyone wanting to explore the city.

This actually worked out great as we’d already spent time in Hungary’s capital, so we got to see a new destination in Slovakia and also take part in the impromptu tour of Gyor, Hungary.

The Courtyard of Europe in Komarno, Slovakia

The crew was also monitoring conditions up to the minute, and rearranged our day in Bratislava to leave a few hours earlier so we’d be able to get to Vienna as planned (I heard a rumour that another cruise company kept to their original schedule, and the boat got stuck there for an extra day).

danube river cruise company ratings

Another pleasant surprise was that there weren’t very many of those annoying announcements over the intercom system (if you’re a frequent cruiser, you know what I’m talking about).

On embarkation night, staff demonstrated the safety procedures while we remained comfortably seated in the lounge drinking champagne, instead of making us awkwardly muster outside like every other ship I’ve ever been on requires.

danube river cruise company ratings

Overall, we had a fantastic time on the luxurious Ama Waterways Danube cruise onboard the AmaSonata , which is an excellent choice for those who enjoy active adventures, great food and seeing new destinations with almost no effort.

Globe Guide experienced this sailing as a guest of Ama Waterways. As always, hosts have no editorial influence on articles.

See inside a new ultra-luxury river cruise line that's charging up to $59,520 per person

  • Newcomer Riverside Luxury Cruises wants to break into the growing river cruise market.
  • The ultra-luxury cruise line  operates former Crystal ships in popular European rivers like the Danube.
  • Riverside's 2024 cruises start at $1,055 per person for four days.

Insider Today

A new ultra-luxury cruise line wants to be the swankiest travel-by-river vacation option.

To do so, it's enticing cruisers with truffle-infused butter, $320-per-person dinners, and butlers that can be beckoned with a simple WhatsApp message.

Affluent travelers , meet Riverside Luxury Cruises.

The budding company first set sail in March 2023. With a year of service under its belt, its three ships are now sailing some of Europe's most popular rivers — starting at more than $260 per person per day.

Riverside is operated by Seaside Collection, a European hotelier.

danube river cruise company ratings

The firm had its sights set on a river cruise venture since 2018, Jen Halboth, CEO of Riverside Luxury Cruises, told Business Insider.

Ironically, COVID-19 was the reason it got into the business.

Crystal Cruises declared bankruptcy in early 2022 amid the pandemic. Shortly after, Seaside purchased and updated five of the then-defunct cruise line's ships.

Three of these vessels now make up Riverside's fleet. The other two are being leased to competitor Uniworld River Cruises.

River cruising has become increasingly popular as wealthy travelers gravitate to ultra-luxury small-ship vacations.

danube river cruise company ratings

River cruise ships are much smaller than their behemoth ocean-based counterparts, allowing Riverside to sail in waterways like Europe's Rhine, Rhone, Danube, Main, Moselle, and Saône rivers.

Along the way, guests can explore destinations many giant ships can't easily access — like Budapest, Hungary; Frankfurt, Germany; and Amsterdam — sometimes visiting more than one port in a day.

One of Riverside's shortest and cheapest 2024 voyages starts at $1,055 per person for a four-day Danube River cruise from Passau, Germany, to Vienna.

danube river cruise company ratings

Alcohol and excursion packages can tack on an extra $75 to $175 per person per night.

Looking to ball out? The most expensive and longest itinerary is $59,521 per person for a three-river, 22-day cruise from Amsterdam to Budapest, Hungary, in the most expensive suite with the most inclusive package.

To compare, the cheapest 2024 voyage with all-inclusive luxury competitor Uniworld River Cruises starts at $2,000 per person for an eight-day Danube River sailing.

River cruisers tend to be over the age of 55.

danube river cruise company ratings

But the new company is targeting guests 45 years old and older, specifically those who frequent luxury vacations but have yet to try a river cruise.

"New luxury travelers want to be pampered, get off and have an adventure, and come back and be taken care of," the cruise line's CEO said.

"Pampering” they will get.

danube river cruise company ratings

Of Riverside's three ships, the 394-foot-long, 74-foot-wide Mozart can accommodate the most guests — up to 162, not including the 82 crew.

Yes, it's larger than Uniworld's ships, which range from 32 to 159 guests. But it's also significantly smaller than Royal Caribbean's new 9,950-person Icon of the Seas ocean vessel.

Like most cruise liners, Riverside's three ships have spas, buffets, and plush lounges and bars.

danube river cruise company ratings

During the day, travelers can enjoy lunch at the open-air grill and relax to live music courtesy of Steinway and Bösendorfer pianos, no less.

At night, they can dine on a seven-course meal at the 295 euros ($320) per-person Vintage Room.

Riverside’s ships have up to 5 restaurants. Vintage Room is the only specialty option.

danube river cruise company ratings

The cost to dine includes a wine pairing and plates like veal with truffle and chanterelle mushrooms and "surf and turf" with beef sirloin and scallops.

But don't expect a lackluster, rushed meal at the other complimentary options: "This is not a churn-and-burn," the company's CEO said of the ships' Waterside restaurants. "You come in for fine dining."

Infused, whipped butter is apparently one of Riverside's hottest commodities.

danube river cruise company ratings

Sometimes, it has chiles. Other times, it's infused with citrus. If you're lucky, you'll get one with truffles.

"People were raving about our butter," Halboth said. "Everyone's waiting to see what butter they'll get at dinner each night."

Need to sleep off all that dairy? You're in luck. Every cabin has a king bed.

danube river cruise company ratings

Riverside's suites range from 194 to 883 square-feet. These high-end cabins include butler service, stocked mini-bars, and espresso machines.

Some suites also have double-sink vanities and walk-in closets, a hallmark of an ultra-luxury cruise vessel .

Does Riverside’s more than $260 per person, per day fare seem reasonable now?

danube river cruise company ratings

If yes, book soon. It'll only get more expensive from here.

These fares don't offset the amount Riverside is spending on amenities like the upscale food, according to Halboth. To make up for these expenditures, the cruise line plans to raise its prices gradually over the next two years.

The company's CEO said bookings have been 'a little lighter' since the start of 2024.

danube river cruise company ratings

But the back half of the year is "filling up" thanks to Americans: About 70 to 80% of its guests are from North America, the company said.

Riverside will operate its Mozart, Ravel, and Debussy ships for three years as it 'hones the brand,' Halboth said.

danube river cruise company ratings

The cruise line's two additional vessels would join its fleet in the next few years.

Given the growing popularity of river cruises , it's a good time for companies like Riverside to start expanding.

However, it could face plenty of incoming competition.

Jamie Loizou, the UK managing director of luxury river cruise line AmaWaterways, is forecasting 2024 as a "pivotal" year for the river cruise industry, noting that 15 new river-based vessels are expected to launch this year, Cruise Critic reported .

17 reported hurt after river cruise ship hits a concrete passageway on the Danube in Austria

  • Copy Link copied

Seventeen passengers were hurt when a Bulgarian river cruise ship lost steering and hit the sides of a lock on the Danube in Austria, the apa news agency reported Saturday. Eleven of the injured were taken to hospitals.

The ship with 142 passengers aboard, most of them from Germany, temporarily lost power to its electronics system and became unsteerable as it passed through narrow locks at 9:45 p.m. Friday, apa reported.

The ship’s power was restored but not before the bow and stern struck the concrete sides of the lock passage near the town of Aschach, a few miles upriver from Linz.

The ship sustained minor damage and continued to its next port. The cause of the loss of electrical power was under investigation.

We are considering a Russian river cruise between St Petersburg and Moscow on 'The Peter the Great'. Has anyone done this? What did you think of it? Would you recommend it? What tour company did you use?

We are looking at using Voyages Jules Verne has anyone done this journey with them? Looking forward to your comments which would be appreciated.

10 of us have booked Gate1travel in Sept.from SP to Moscow. Don't know whether it is good or not but the price is reasonable. We were with them in River Danube and loved it. Get referal discount of $100 immediately.

' class=

We put ourselves in the hands of a St Petersburg agent who knew the boats and their reputation, and he was able to hunt up for us a great deal -- and we certainly needed this, as this is not a cheap route, as you have no doubt found out already -- by negotiating to cut out the shore cruises at each end (we could do this more effectively by ourselves anyway.... using metros is each city is a good deal quicker than the usual bus-in-peak-hour which seems to be the norm for the bus excursions. So we paid for seven nights instead of the usual eleven).

If that idea appeals to you, my advice is to seek local advice. Our agent was Slava at Parallel60 Tours; I have already recommended him a couple of times on this forum, and one or two other posters have used his services also (to their advantage, it would seem from their comments) so you should be able to find his contact number just by searching under "Slava" above.

It's a pleasant cruise , by the way, and we never for a moment regretted the cost... we felt that if we had decided to go by train, we probably wouldn't have ventured too far from the railway stations at the intermediate stops, so this option really gave us a chance to see a part of Russia that otherwise would have been denied to us.Good luck!

Imperial Moscow

On our first ever program was a river cruise in Russia which had just started opening its doors to western visitors. Sure enough, the sailing along the mighty Volga departed in July of 1993 with 207 passengers on board. Boy, what a trip that was! First time cruisers…first western passengers aboard a Russian ship….crew that spoke no English…food that was limited to cabbage, boiled potatoes and cucumbers… a most memorable experience indeed!

However, as a result, we discovered a new way to explore the world, via the inland waterways of various countries, long before river cruising became a staple that it is today! Building on Russia’s popularity, we started expanding our river cruise offers to include Ukraine in 1995, Danube in 1996, China Yangtze in 1997, Egypt Nile in 2002, Mekong Delta Cruises in 2004 and most recently cruises in India & Myanmar (Burma).

So here we are, twenty eight years later, with more than 70,000 passengers that have traveled with us, some of them as many as 11 times over the years! We have survived wars, famines, bird flues, economic crises and Lord knows what else and yet, older but no wiser, we are still as passionate about our business as the day we started it! And with today’s mergers, acquisitions and big corporate and internet travel marketers, we are most proud of the fact that we are still an independent, family run operation whose customer satisfaction comes way before revenues and profit margins…and with your support, we hope to continue for many years to come!

Cool Cruiser

It appears that Princess is dropping the excursion to Moscow! What's up with that?

1. So very expensive that there are not enough takers to warrant hiring a Tour Guide.

2. 17.5-hour day is too long.

3. 5 hours travel time (1 hour to airport, 1 hour flight + fooling around at airport time = 5 hours). :o

4. There are sooooooo many beautiful places to visit right there in SPb.

Jordan: So sorry if you are disappointed. I know you really wanted to do that. I had not heard that it was cancelled; however, you are going in June, if I remember correctly. I don't go until September. You booked at Cab-Inn? Do you have your pre-cruise Docs?

I plan on doing Moscow another time. :D

After reading your post, I had to find out why. Turns out that the Princess web site hasn't been updated. :( The Intro to Moscow excursion lists available dates of Jan 01, 2004 - Sep 30 , 2004 ! Like you, we were planning on this one and are very disappointed. Maybe, and it's probably a BIG maybe, Princess will bring it back. I won't hold my breath though, as this would have to be arranged far in advance for a group outing.

Smooth sailing.

BJS

It is not on the selection for the July 24th Star Princess cruise. They have been available for selecting for about a week now.

River Cruise Ship Loses Power, Crashes Into Wall on the Danube Sending 11 Passengers to the Hospital

A Bulgarian river cruise ship crashed into a concrete wall while sailing the Danube River, sending 11 people to the hospital with injuries.

The vessel was sailing near the town of Aschach an der Donau, Austria, when it was “suddenly no longer able to maneuver,” according to local police . The ship ran into a concrete wall as it was leaving a lock chamber.

“The second captain of the ship, who was operating the helm at the time, immediately pressed the emergency switch, whereupon the electronics started again and he was able to steer the ship out of the lock,” according to police. “He docked the cruise ship at the quay wall and notified the emergency services and the lock supervisor.”

The vessel had 142 passengers on board, most of whom were from Germany. Of them, 11 were taken to a hospital with injuries and six more suffered less serious injuries.

It’s not clear why the ship malfunctioned, but it was able to continue its voyage to Linz. The ship suffered some minor damage on its side walls. Police did not reveal the name of the ship, nor the cruise line.
