Located in the Eastern Mindanao. Aliwagwag contains one of the largest remaining blocks of tropical lowland forest in the Philippines. The waterfalls can be seen just along the national highway and just 30 minutes ride from Cateel Proper.

You can certainly take photos of this beauty from the bridge.

6. Lake Carolina

Lake Carolina is situated at Baganga, a first-class municipality on the east coast of Davao Oriental. It is surrounded by the Davao Gulf and is one of the towns in the Philippines directly facing the Pacific Ocean. Also Known for its untouched white sand beaches and thriving agricultural industry, Baganga is now being gradually put on the current tourist map, thanks to Lake Carolina.

Lake Carolina also boasts crystal pure and clean freshwater and saltwater. It is also lush in vegetation and rich in tall grasses and trees, making it a perfect haven for travelers who want a more laid-back and relaxing excursion.

7. Pusan Point

On January 1, 2000, this exact spot along the coast of Davao Oriental fronting the Pacific Ocean was the location of a grand display. Hundreds of local and even foreign tourists are said to have assembled here to have a sight of the first sunrise of the new millennium.

Almost two decades later, many people visiting the province are still not aware that in the town of Caraga, about an hour’s drive north of the capital, the sun rises first in the Philippines at Pusan Point.

Pusan Point is around 9 kilometers or about a 15-minute drive from the national highway going east near the coast. It is part of Barangay Santiago of the Municipality of Caraga which is also considered one of the oldest settlements in the whole of Mindanao. Due to its geographical position, Pusan Point is truly the easternmost inland point of the Philippines.

8. Caraga Church

also called San Salvador del Mundo Church (Christ, the Saviour of the World), is one of the main attractions in the municipality of Caraga in Davao Oriental because of its historical reputation and significance not only for the province and the island of Mindanao but for the whole country, as San Salvador del Mundo Church is where Christianity began in the eastern part of the Philippines.

It is located at the heart of Poblacion of Caraga, about 229 feet from the edge of a high point overlooking the Pacific Ocean. It is the oldest stone church and one of Mindanao’s remaining Spanish colonial-era churches. It was built in 1884 by a priest named Fr. Pablo Pastells when the Jesuits took custody of the spiritual administration of the town in 1871 from the Augustinian Recollects.

The Caraga Church is a humble structure made of coral and limestone blocks positioned on top of each other, while the upper half is built mainly of wood. Upon the church’s main door is a writing that bears a symbol of Christ which dates to the structure’s foundation in 1884. The interior has experienced renovation since the church’s centennial in 1996.

9. Curtain Falls

The Curtain Falls originates its name after the formation of the waterfalls itself. The cool dropping waters come from the river above and the bulky flat rock causes it to drift in a curtain-like form. Curtain Falls is thought to be the broadest curtain falls in the whole Davao Region. The waters fall from a distance of around 7 meters in height and its width is maybe around 15 to 18 meters.

It falls into a shallow basin of water underneath where you may take a dip or a plunge. You can climb on the rocks near the waterfall if you want to reach the spot overhead. Once you’re on top, you can see another fall from view. These are quite far from the Curtain Falls and will take nearly an hour to trek. The place is kept in its natural form and is not that truly developed even if it is already open for tourism. You don’t have to pay the entrance fee. Makeshift cottages are made accessible by the locals for rent.

It’s been a while since I last visited Davao Oriental. So, when I got an invite from the Department of Tourism Region XI for a Familiarization Tour, I immediately said yes. I wanted to explore the province since it has become a go-to place for people within the region to unwind during the pandemic.

Here’s our 3D2N Davao Oriental itinerary for your reference if you plan to explore the province.

Day 1: From Davao to Governor Generoso

We left Davao City early in the morning around 5:00 AM. There was obviously no traffic yet, so we arrived in Banaybanay just in time for breakfast. We first dropped by at the province’s welcome signage for a quick photo op before heading to Kagan Cafe also in the town of Banaybanay.

Breakfast at Kagan Cafe in Banaybanay

At Kagan Cafe, we were served with a sumptuous platter of continental and Filipino breakfast. We enjoyed the meal, had a little chat, get to know each other, and ended up with a quick tour of a nearby mosque.

Mt. Hamiguitan Natural Science Museum

After breakfast, we headed to the town of San Isidro to visit Mt. Hamiguitan Natural Science Museum, an interactive facility that not only showcases the wonders of Mt. Hamiguitan (the only UNESCO inscribed World Heritage Site in Mindanao) but also advocates for people’s participation in the mountain’s conservation efforts by introducing them its rich flora and fauna, and what it means for the humanity.

El Don Beach Resort

We stopped for lunch at El Don Beach Resort, one of the top beach resorts in Governor Generoso. The resort offers a buffet lunch set up featuring local dishes and a variety of desserts.

Our last activity for the day before heading to our accommodation was resort hopping in Lanca. Although part of Mati City, this emerging beach destination in the region is accessible via Governor Generoso.

We visited the newly built South Point Beach Resort, a small resort featuring small but pretty villas that can accommodate up to four people.

Our second stop was at Kojo Beach Resort situated on a long stretch of white sand beach in Lanca. It is one of the top beach resorts in the area offering comfortable room accommodation.

San Salvador del Mundo Church

Our second stop in Caraga before heading to Baganga was San Salvador del Mundo Church. Itis the only church in the whole Davao Region with a historical marker inscribed by the National Historical Commission of the Philippines. Its construction began in 1877 and was completed in 1884. It is built of wood, corals, and stones. It served as a mission station for Spanish Missionaries in propagating Christianity in Eastern Mindanao.

Curtain Falls Eco-Park

After the power breakfast at Playa del Rosario, we visited Campawan Curtain Falls which is considered as Davao Region’s widest waterfalls. It derived its name from the formation of the waterfalls itself. The cool falling waters come from the river above and the large flat rock causes it to flow in a curtain-like pattern. The waterfall from a distance of around 20feet in height and width of around 50 to 60 feet.

San Victor Island

Our next stop in Baganga was at the famous San Victor Island, one of Davao Oriental’s unique landforms facing the Pacific Ocean. It is a 3-hectare island located in Barangay San Victor about 20 minutes from Baganga’s town proper. It is considered as the Island Jewel of Baganga and is on the list of the top must-visit tourist spots of Davao Oriental and the Davao Region.

Poo Sandbar

The last stop before heading back to Davao City was at Poo Sandbar located in Brgy. Kinablangan, Davao Oriental. It is a community-based eco-tourism site managed by the barangay. We arrived just after the low tide so we weren’t able to see the sandbar. If you are going there, make sure to check the low tide so you can enjoy walking on the sand bar.

Poo Sandbar in Baganga, Davao Oriental

So that was our 3D2N Davao Oriental itinerary. We were supposed to drop by at Aliwagwag Falls for a quick photo op but it was already dark when we passed by. Aliwagwag is still undergoing rehabilitation and is closed to tourists.

8 Attractions You Must See in Davao Oriental, Philippines

Table of contents.

Davao Oriental has recently caught the attention of local travelers due to its untouched beauty – particularly its splendid virgin beaches. The province is still off the beaten path and it would be quite an adventure to jump from one beach to another and visit the exciting Davao Oriental attractions.

People come to this province for its breathtaking beaches, fresh seafood, wide-open skies, and exotic fruits. If you are planning an adventure and are willing to endure the 4-hour drive, here’s a list of must-visit Davao Oriental attractions.

Dahican Beach

davao oriental tourist spots

Surfing has become a popular sport in the Philippines and enthusiasts from this neck of the woods gravitate to Dahican — a long stretch of white sand beach facing Mayo Bay. When swells are not apt for surfing, skimming is the second-best pastime in this seven-kilometer beach. The laid-back resorts and restaurants dotting the shoreline are also excellent places to enjoy a sumptuous meal of the freshest catch from the sea. Dahican hosts the annual SummerFrolic Music Festival .

Aliwagwag Falls

davao oriental tourist spots

Local travelers consider Aliwagwag Falls’s multi-tiered cascades some of best Davao Oriental attractions. With over a thousand feet of cascades divided into a little over a hundred smaller cascades, Aliwagwag is indeed a sight to take in. The roaring of the water is enough to enchant (and deafen) you. The government has now protected the area surrounding the falls and called it the Aliwagwag Falls Eco Park. Visitors may picnic in selected areas around the park. You can also hike in hanging bridges flanking the waterfalls and swim in small pools of cold freshwater.

Sleeping Dinosaur Island

davao oriental tourist spots

Quite hard to miss en-route to Mati City, the Sleeping Dinosaur island is an intriguing landform. It resembles – you guessed it right – a long-necked ancient animal that seems to have fallen asleep and turned into sand and stone in Pujada Bay. The island has become a popular hiking spot and even a site for dramatic prenuptial photoshoots. For those who can’t make the trip down, the lookouts along the highway should still afford a breathtaking experience.

Cape San Agustin

Tucked away in a little town called Governor Generoso, this generally untouched stretch of pinkish-white sand beach is one of Davao Oriental’s must-visit attractions. The mystic lighthouses of Parola will bring you right back to the Spanish colonial era and the underwater landscape of the great Celebes Sea will make you wish you were Aquaman. Also a must-see is “The Altar”, a massive rock formation with strong waves perpetually crashing into it.

Manay Beaches

davao oriental tourist spots

This sleepy town in Davao Oriental is home to undiscovered white sand and rocky beaches, vast coconut plantations, and mango orchards. San Ignacio, in particular, is becoming a secret hideaway of avid beach goers who want to do away with the crowds of Dahican. While surfing is not safe on this rocky side of the province, the pocket beaches are perfect for sunbathing, fishing, and taking thousands of Instagammable photos. You can easily find sustenance by flagging down the local fishermen for their catch of the day. If you’re lucky, they might even offer to cook it for you. There are quite a few resorts in the area but expect only basic amenities.

Sigaboy Island

If you’re big on sand bars and snorkeling, the small island of Sigaboy will not disappoint. This island is so small that an hour would be too long to explore the entire place.  When the tide is low, you can sun bathe on the sand bar and if you’re up to it, explore the wonderful sights underwater. Keep in mind that there are no commercial establishments around so it is best to arrange lunch with your guide. Otherwise, your best hope is a vendor on a boat coming along with fresh seafood and refreshment.

Lake Carolina

If you’ve heard of the Enchanted River of Surigao, you’ll be happy to know that a similar wonder can be found in Davao Oriental. Lake Carolina boasts of greenish blue brackish water, very uncharacteristic of a lake. Just as well because it is actually not a lake but rather a lagoon abundant with marine life. Expect to find a random local selling freshly-caught mud crabs in the area. My advice? Take advantage! These delicacies are way cheaper in Davao Oriental than in most parts of Davao Region.

Bonsai Forest

Bonsai cultivation is an ancient art. It requires patience and skill to trim and train an otherwise great tree to stunt its growth and still thrive. Mt. Hamiguitan, for some reason, has created an entire forest of bonsai trees without human intervention. The place is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site .

Still relatively untouched by commerce, Davao Oriental is slowly becoming a tourism gem in this part of the Philippines. Its location is perfect – far away enough to keep flocks of tourists away but also far away enough to attract those who are looking for a real adventure.

Bucket List: 15 Best Places to Visit in Davao Oriental

Table of Contents

Davao Region, one of the Philippines’ centers for trade and investments, boasts some of the most beautiful vacation destinations in the country. Located on the eastern tip of the region, sandwiched by Compostela Valley to the west, is the province of Davao Oriental. The province’s expansive landscape, majestic waterfalls, and dense forests offer some of the best ecotourism adventures.

1. Pusan Point

Pusan Point by Chito Samontina

Location: Barangay Santiago, Caraga, Davao Oriental Entrance Rates: P75 per person

The easternmost part of the Philippines is where the first lights of sunrise touch. Found in Santiago, Caraga is Pusan Point, where a Jubilee Cross stands to mark the First Millennium Sunrise in 2000. The historical vantage point is one of the newest ecotourism destinations in Davao Oriental, together with the Pusan Point Discovery Center and Eco-Park, which was inaugurated in 2016. After taking in the first rays of light at the site, visitors can head to the Discovery Center and Eco-Park, start the day with fresh buko juice sold from outside the gates, or jog along the promenade.

2. San Victor Island

Davao Region is filled with islands with popular ecotourism destinations, like the famous Samal Islands. Along the region’s eastern coasts are the lesser-known islands. Perfectly quiet, peaceful, and detached is San Victor Island. Located close to the town proper, the island has powder-fine sands, almost creamy, with coral stones scattered on the shores. Across the island are huts to accommodate overnight guests. San Victor Island used to be the island retreat religious sect, hence the cabins.

3. Mount Hamiguitan Range Wildlife Sanctuary

Mount Hamiguitan is home to diverse endemic wildlife and native flora. The mountain’s dense forests are a unique pygmy forest with several endangered, endemic and rare species of flora and fauna. Some wildlife that populates the mountain range includes the Philippine mossy-pygmy fruit bats, Philippine warty pigs, and the Philippine cockatoo. Mount Hamiguitan was proclaimed a national park and wildlife sanctuary in 2003 and then listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2014. Back then, Mount Hamiguitan Range Wildlife Sanctuary is only open to researchers. Now, adventurers and hikers can climb and witness the natural wonders of Mount Hamiguitan.

Located close to the sanctuary is the Mount Hamiguitan Natural Science Museum, an interactive museum that encourages the public to join the conservation efforts in Mount Hamiguitan.

4. Aliwagwag Falls Eco Park

Aptly named Long Beach, Cream Sand cuts across two barangays in Cateel, Barangay San Antonio and Barangay Baybay. Because the beach intersects two barangays, visitors are bound to come across small resorts and private properties. Ask for permission or pay the required entrance fee before traversing the long beach.

6. Lake Carolina

Visitors should first drop by Poo Sandbar Tourism and Information Center near Kinablangan Public Market. Poo Sandbar is best visited during low tide hours. Tide time updates are regularly posted on the official Facebook page of Poo Sandbar Tourism and Information Center.

9. Dahican Beach

Dahican Beach by Edge Genciagan via Flickr cc

Dahican Beach is considered to be the Surfing Capital of Davao Oriental. Popular among surfers and skimboarders, it’s no wonder why the beach has several surfboard and skimboards rentals and lessons. The pristine paradise is also a favorite among backpackers who look for that straightforward provincial life.

10. Subangan Museum

A photo of Mandaya Tribe inside Subangan Museum in Mati City

Location: Mati City, Davao Oriental Socials: facebook.com/subangandavor

Subangan Museum , or the Subangan Davao Oriental Provincial Museum, opened to the public in 2014 after years of planning. The idea to build the museum came in 2010 when a 53-feet long and 20-metric-ton sperm whale drifted ashore. The locals supported the idea and voiced their desire to promote the rich heritage and diverse culture in Davao Oriental. Today, the museum continues to feature exhibits on the rich heritage and biodiversity of the province. The museum’s main attraction is DavOr, the sperm whale found along Davao Oriental’s shores.

11. Sleeping Dinosaur Island

Location: Mati City, Davao Oriental Environmental Fee: P50 per person

Sleeping Dinosaur Island is a popular viewpoint by the highway. Back then, at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, visitors could only pull over and take a photo with the island as the backdrop. It is again open to the public for guided hikes to the island.

12. Sigaboy Island

Location: Sigaboy Island, Governor Generoso, Davao Oriental

Sigaboy Island is one of the newest go-to islands in Davao Oriental for those who want a quick time alone. The island’s name comes from the words “siga” and “baboy” to refer to the folklore when a spirit on fire suddenly appeared. Once on the island, visitors can play and swim on the island’s waters or hike toward the island’s summit.

13. Pujada Island

Pujada Island photo via FB Page

Located in Pujada Bay, the island is distinguishable by the dense forest along its ranges and the white sand beach that overlooks the scenic ocean. Visitors can time their arrival to see the Oak and Ivy Sandbar. The island’s serene atmosphere and magnificent surroundings make it an ideal day trip away from the city.

14. Cape of San Agustin

Location: Cape of San Agustin, Governor Generoso, Davao Oriental

Cape San Agustin, formerly Provincia de Caraga, is one of the most important strategic sites during the Spanish colonial era and WWII. The cape’s iconic lighthouses are popular among bikers and motorbikers, with Parola, or San Agustin Lighthouse, being the most popular attraction. The lighthouses were built in 1938, about 50 to 100 feet from the ground. Because the cape faces the Celebes Sea and Davao Gulf, the area has become a hunting ground by American submarines in WWII. Visitors can also look closely at “The Altar,” a natural rock formation where the first Holy Eucharist and Holy Mass occurred in 1550.

15. Chase the Waterfalls

From impressive twin waterfalls to the cascading tier waterfalls, Davao Oriental is no stranger to tourists who chase the waterfalls. Aliwagwag Falls is one of the highest in the country, consisting of hundreds of smaller-tier waterfalls. Inawiyan Falls requires an 850-meter hike through rocky terrain, while Busay Falls is the easiest to access. Magpong Falls is another site that requires a treacherous trek along its rugged dirt path. Anagacian Falls is a relatively new waterfall, only recently discovered in Baganga. Curtain Falls is one of the prettiest, with shower-like cascades spread like a curtain. Know that waterfalls may be best visited during the rainy season so expect to trek on muddy paths. Remember to take nothing but memories and leave nothing but footprints.

How to get there

To get to Davao Oriental, visitors can take a flight to Francisco Bangoy International Airport, also known as Davao International Airport, from any major city such as Manila, Clark, and Cebu. It is the main airport in Davao City and the whole Davao Region.

Visitors can take a taxi from the airport to any point in Davao City or Ecoland Bus Terminal. Then, board the bus or van bound for Mati. There is no direct bus from the airport. The best way to get around Davao Oriental is by jeepney and, for the sake of ease and convenience, by rented vehicle.

Top 10 Must Visit Attractions in Davao Oriental

The Philippines is such a great cornucopia of beautiful landmarks and stunning tourist spots. It will take more than a fantastic weekend for foreign travelers (or even locals!) to experience the full splendor of touring the country. For starters, check out Davao Oriental’s truly remarkable tourist sites. You’ll definitely want to include these in your list of must-see travel destinations:

Sleeping_Dinosaur

The Sleeping Dinosaur

Tell your tour guide to take you around Mati City Road for a quick stop. Here, you can have a full uninhibited view of the island that, from afar, looks like a dinosaur deep in slumber. Brontosaurus, anyone? It’s a fantastic site for group selfie shots or photo souvenirs.

Aliwagwag Falls

Considered as one of the tallest cascading waterfalls in the country, this is truly a remarkable tourist attraction you shouldn’t miss. It features 84 beautiful cascading formations that add up to more than 1,110 feet. That’s about 3 times the height of the famous Maria Cristina Falls in Iligan City! Aliwagwag is definitely the place to be on a hot summer’s day, either for a casual picnic with your buddies or for a day of trekking and hiking through Cateel, Davao Oriental.

Mount Hamiguitan

Home to one of the largest populations of flora species in the country, it houses a total of 878 species of wild plants. Plus, the animal ecosystem that depends on this dense forestry is something to witness for yourself. Our tip? Make it a point to see its 600-hectare bonsai field for a whimsical experience with Mother Nature. You should also see the “Tinagong Dagat” or The Hidden Sea. It is actually a vast lake that experiences high tide and low tide phenomenon, something which scientific experts are still baffled about.

Waniban Island

Tired of the commercialized beach haven that is Boracay? If you’re looking for a more relaxing beach experience in the South, head over to this island to bask in the warm crystal clear shores or sunbathe on white sand beaches. Plus, there are tons of water activities you can enjoy here. Or, if you’re more of the see-it-and-enjoy-it type, just lounge by the beach and see dolphins gleefully cavorting in the distance.

Kawa-kawa Falls

Located just off the point of San Isidro, Davao Oriental, this famous waterfall is a common destination for locals and a new adventure for foreign travelers. With 15-feet deep pools and a lush forest formation around the site, this is the perfect summer getaway for families or friends.

Balite Hot Spring

balite hotspring

A visit to Baganga definitely entails a trip to this tropical hot spring spa resort. It’s the perfect complement to an adventurous summer escapade. You can relax and lounge in the hot springs or indulge in a soothing massage under cover of lush trees.

San Victor Island

This small 3-hectare island is surrounded with powder-white beaches and cool waters. With lofty picnic huts under the shade of a thin coconut forestry, this island offers the tranquility, privacy, and relaxation that you’re looking for in a vacation. Bring your snorkeling gear for a fun exploration at its colorful underwater reefs or take a beach umbrella and just lay out under the warm tropical Philippine sun.

Tibanban Island

Other than swimming and lounging around on the beach, wouldn’t trekking and hiking be an excellent conclusion to a terrific vacation? If so, you should definitely check out this island. Aside from a beautiful lighthouse, it has a slightly dense forest formation that’s perfect for amateur hiking and even camping.

Guang Guang Mangrove Park

If you’re up for more sight seeing, you better book a trip to this mangrove site so you can see Mother Nature’s best work. Take pictures or explore the environmental significance of this nature park. Plus, you can take a side trip to Luban Lagoon or Masao Beach for more beautiful landmarks.

Of course, no vacation will be complete without some shopping! Take a trip around this beautiful modern city and indulge in some souvenir shopping for your family and friends back home.  In fact, you should dine in one of the local Pinoy cuisine diners to sample some authentic Davaoeño dishes.

Davao Oriental has many more attractions to offer, sites that will take your breath away and make you come back for more. Book your own trip now and don’t miss out on this beautiful paradise!

12 Underrated Tourist Spots In Davao Oriental (Cateel & Baganga)

The promise island of Mindanao is now slowly gaining attention from the local travel community. It started with the mystic island of Camiguin then pretty quickly, Siargao rose to fame. One by one, the jewels of the southern parts of The Philippines are getting their well-deserved recognition. People are slowly warming up to Zamboanga, Basilan and Tawi Tawi when not so long ago, these places were feared all over the world. And I guess Davao needs no further introduction with it being famous for Mt. Apo and durian. Now the big surprise came from the areas away from this city, particularly, the eastern coasts. Many people already knew about Mati but let’s set our eyes to the less-known towns of Cateel and Baganga and these 10 Underrated Tourist Spots In Davao Oriental.

1. Aliwagwag Falls

Aliwagwag Falls is considered as the highest waterfall in the country. It consists of more than a hundred tiers of smaller waterfalls flowing from high up the mountains surrounded by a lush rainforest. As a child, I have always been enchanted to see this precious natural gem. It is sort of a relief to behold this beguiling beauty every time after a long and tiresome journey. Although some developments were made to make visiting the falls more enticing to tourists, I’m just glad to see it remain at its most natural state.

How To Go To Aliwagwag Falls: From Davao City, go to Ecoland Terminal. Ride a van going to Cateel or Baganga. The falls should just be along the way before reaching the town. Travel Time : 3 Hrs Fare: P350 Entrance: P100/Person

2. Lake Carolina

Lake Carolina is one of the newest spots to surface in recent years. It is a beautiful lake with mesmerizing turquoise water nestled in the middle of towering trees just a few walks from the highway. Its water is crystal clear and cold perfect for a refreshing dip during summer. Its depth is unknown. Some say it is connected to a nearby beach through an underwater cave but no one can really say for sure. Boating or rafting and simply chilling while basking in its captivating beauty are the most fun to do in this stunning lake.

How To Go To Lake Carolina: From Davao City, ride a van going to Baganga. In Baganga central, ride a tricycle going to Lake Carolina. Travel Time: 4 Hrs Fare: P450 Entrance Fee: P10

3. Long Beach Cream Sand

It is the longest beach in the area traversing barangays San Antonio and Baybay in Cateel hence its name. But the sands are not the standard cream color. It is more like brown, like milk chocolate or mocha yet it’s one of the finest, smoothest and softest sands I’ve ever sunk my feet into. The beach is truly gorgeous and some say celebrities like Erwan Heusaff and Drew Arellano secretly frequent the area to surf. And just recently, Kulas of Becoming Filipino also purchased property along this beach.

How To Go To Long Beach Cream Sand: From Davao City, ride a van going to Cateel. In Cateel central, ride a tricycle going to Brgy. San Antonio and tell them you’re going to Long Beach Cream Sand. You can also ride a van going to Baganga and get off in Brgy. San Antonio, at the junction leading to the beach. Travel Time: 4 Hrs Fare: P400 Entrance Fee: Free but a few resorts are in the area that charge P20.

4. Mahoc Beach

Mahoc Beach is one of the few white sand beaches in both Cateel and Baganga. It has fine sugary white sands that stretch to about a few kilometers. It has subtle waves perfect for both surfing and taking a nice dip. Cottages are scattered along the beach which you could rent for P500/day. Grilling areas are also available where you can cook some freshly caught seafood sold by fisherfolks there.

How To Go To Mahoc Beach: From Davao City, ride a van going to Baganga and alight in Mahoc Beach just before you reach the welcome to Baganga arc. The beach is just along the h-way so you can just walk your way there. Travel Time: 4 Hrs Fare: P400 Entrance: Free Cottage: P300-P500 depending on the size

5. Anagacian Falls

Anagacian Falls is a newly discovered waterfall in Baganga. It has shower-like cascades falling to an emerald lagoon. Getting to the falls requires a 2-hour trek and several river crossings.

How To Go To Anagacian Falls: From Davao City, ride a van going to Baganga. In Baganga, ride a tricycle to Brgy. Batiano. Hire a guide and start the trek. Travel Time: 5 Hrs Fare: P450-P500 Entrance: 20 Guide Fee: P300

6. Sunrise Boulevard

Sunrise Boulevard is a local favorite. Most locals spend their time here with their families to simply admire the ocean or take a dip in its tidal pools during low tide. People usually stop by this spot at any given time of the day but the best hour is still during sunrise hence it’s called Sunrise Boulevard.

How To Go To Sunrise Blvd: From Davao City, ride a van going to Baganga and Sunrise Boulevard should just be along the way. Travel Time: 4 Hrs Fare: P400 Entrance: Free

7. San Victor Island

San Victor Island is one of the few islands dotting the Davao eastern coasts. It is a small island situated five minutes off the coast of Brgy. San Victor. It previously served as a retreat and recreation island for several Christian religious sects. The island has fine white sand beaches and cerulean clear water. Visitors are welcome to stay for a day or overnight.

How To Go To San Victor Island: From Davao City, ride a van going to Baganga. The jump-off to San Victor Island should just be along the highway. Hire a boat to the island. Travel Time: 4Hrs Fare: P400-P450 Entrance Fee: P50 Boat: P50/Person/2Way Environmental Fee: P50/group

8. Kinablangan Floating Cottages

If you are into all sorts of seafood and would like to sample some of the freshest ones when you’re in the area, there is no other place to be than in Kinablangan. My mom frequents this place whenever she comes home from Manila. Visitors can rent a floating cottage for P300-P500, depending on your haggling skills. While afloat in the middle of the sea, you can enjoy binging on seafood and booze and take a dip to sober up later.

Update:  The local barangay has now taken over the tourist activities in Poo Sandbar and Island. Visitors are now required to register at the barangay office and pay an entrance fee of P100/head. There are no more floating cottages and they are replaced by regular outrigger boats which is rented at P75/head/hour.

How To Go To Kinablangan: From Davao City, ride a van to Baganga. Tell the driver you’re going to Kinablangan so they would take you inside and not just drop you off at the side of the highway. From there, hire a tricycle to take you to the fish wharf. Roads are not developed so the ride could be a bit bumpy. Travel Time : 4.5 Hrs Fare: P400-P450 Entrance: Free Boat Rental: P75/head/hour

9. Ban-ao Caves

Baganga surely is brimming with one too many undiscovered jewels. Just a couple of years ago, it opened five cave systems both for exploration and research. A visit to the caves is perfect for people looking for an adventure other than the usual, a rush of adrenaline maybe or simply basking at something extraordinary which spelunking can both offer.

How To Go To Ban-ao Caves: From Davao City, ride a van to Baganga and alight in Ban-ao Central. Go to the barangay office and hire a tour guide. Travel Time: 4 Hrs Fare: P450 Entrance: – Guide Fee: –

10. Curtain Falls

As its name suggests, Curtain Falls has silky white curtain-like cascades falling into its emerald basin pool surrounded by a pile of rocks. The local tourism authority has developed the area near the waterfall where they built a lounge and a snack area for visitors. Spaces nearest to the falls were unchanged and only small picnic huts were placed to accommodate visitors. The roads were also being fixed for better access.

How To Go To Curtain Falls: Curtain Falls is kind of hard to get to with public transpo. So from Davao City, just hop on a van going to Baganga. In Baganga, rent a motorcycle or hire a habal-habal to take you to the Curtain Falls. Travel Time: 4 Hrs (Dvo-Baganga) | 1.5 Hrs to the falls. Fare: P450 (Dvo-Baganga) | P300 (Habal-Habal) Entrance: P10 Parking Fee: P20-P50 depends on your vehicle

11. Brian J. Nature Resort

Experience luxury for as low as P25. This resort in the middle of a forested barangay of Mahan-ub has a gorgeous swimming pool similar to those you would only see in expensive private villas and resorts.

How To Go To Brian J. Nature Resort: From Davao City, ride a van to Baganga and alight at the turn leading to Brgy. Mahan-ub, just before crossing Baganga Bridge. Ride a tricycle to Brgy. Mahan-ub and ask them to drop you off at Brian J. Nature Resort. Travel Time: 4 Hrs Fare: P450 Entrance: P25/head Cottage: P100

12. Langoyon Beach & Mangrove Park

Baganga and Cateel are overflowing with nature’s goodness from stunning beaches to gorgeous waterfalls and lakes. This fact is also seen in the abundant mangrove forests found in different areas within these two towns. One of the best places where these beautiful mangroves are showcased is Langoyon Beach & Mangrove Park and a visit to this place and one of its resorts makes for an adventurous retreat close to nature.

How To Go Langoyon Beach & Mangrove Park: From Davao City, ride a van to Baganga then ride a tricycle going to Brgy. Baculin and tell the driver to drop you off at Langoyon Beach. Travel Time: 4-5 Hrs Fare: P500-P600 Entrance: Depends on the resort. Langoyon Beach Resort charges P100/head. Cottage: P500

Useful Travel Tips

  • Davao City is the nearest airport to access these tourist spots. Flying to Butuan is also a good option if you plan to check out Agusan Provinces first and work your way to Davao Oriental.
  • Taking a bus to Baganga and Cateel from Davao City is also an option but make sure you ride the bus passing by ComVal as the usual ones use the route via Mati which is farther. Unless you’re planning to explore Mati first, taking the route via Compostela Valley is the most ideal way.
  • Getting to each one of the tourist spots can be done by hiring or renting a motorcycle. Note that these spots are relatively far from one another and it may require a couple of days to visit them all.
  • If you are going back to Davao City after seeing these spots, I would suggest that you start exploring Baganga. But if you are headed to Mati, start with the spots found in Cateel.
  • If you are into waterfalls, the nearby towns of Boston and Maragusan are a paradise for unexplored waterfalls too.
  • Know that waterfalls are best seen during rainy seasons and in Davao Oriental, rains are predominant during the months of November to May. June to October is typically sunny.

There you have it lovelies. Tell me what you think about these spots. How many of them have you seen so far? If none yet, hope this helps you on your trip in the future. Share this post with your friends and plan that road trip now. Until next time. Ciao!

Thank you for your response. What’s the best itenerary if this is the case. I’ll appreciate your response and more power to your beautiful blog. 🤍

Yes! 5 days is more than enough. I suggest you start with the waterfalls in Boston then Cateel and Baganga. If you still can, you can also include Kapuka Falls in Caraga. You can probably spend 2-3 days to see the waterfalls. Then see Mati for the remaining 2 days.

Wow, thanks for this!

You’re welcome Rye!

Hi Do you know the bus schedule going from Davao Ecoland terminal to cateel?

Hi Grace. Depends which bus you’re taking. Mallen bus trip is usually scheduled to depart at midnight. Bachelor bus has 2 trips daily. One in the evening and one in the morning. They usually depart at 7PM & 7AM respectively. Note that Bachelor bus takes the Mati route and the Mallen bus takes the Comval route.

Day 1 Pusan Point (Caraga) Princesa Falls Caraga Town Proper San Victor Island (overnight)

Hello….I’m currently in Tagum city ….I would like to know what the best way to get there from Tagum city…

Hello Gerald. You can ride a bus bound for either Mati or Cateel.

Hi, can you recommend a beach that accomodates an overnight stay for more than 10 person…

Hello. I would suggest staying in Pilot Beach. San Victor Island also caters to visitors who are staying for the night.

Ilang days in total to fully explore all of these? Where should we stay at night? Sa long beach ba o mas okey sa Mahoc? Thanks 🙂

Hi. 3 days would suffice. You can stay in both beaches. Please know that there might not be resorts available at the moment, kaya bring tents with you.

Finally, I will be going to Baganga for 3 days vacay, thanks for the tip. May idea ka if pwedeng ang itinerary from Davao City-Compostela Valley-Baganga tapos exit Mati balik ng Davao City? Would like to visit din sana Pusan Point. Thanks. Hesitant pa ako if saan ako magstay, sa Dagat ni Tatay or Camp Sotera. Hope you’ll help me decide.

Yes. Okay nman yung itinerary mo. Dagat ni Tatay is kind of busy esp on weekends pero if di nman yun issue then you can stay there. Both are okay nman kasi they share the same beach.

Yeah I visit their official fb page and yup, busy nga sa Dagat ni Tatay. Pero tumatanggap naman daw sila ng outsider visitor and it seems nga na kapitbahay lang sila ng Camp, so, I chose to stay sa Camp and visit sa Dagat ni Tatay. Last question, may idea ka anong magandang oras maganda pumunta sa floating cottage? Kasi undecided ako if after ng Sunrise Boulevard, saan ako next, Curtain Falls or Floating Cottage sa Poo?

Depends. Mas maganda pumunta dun ng lowtide para maexperience mo yung sandbar. Wala ng floating cottages ngayon. Regular na bangka na lang sya. Mas maganda din babad muna sa dagat then banlaw sa falls.

Curious what spots can cover a full 2 day itinerary? Thanks!

Hello Pearl. You can do Aliwagwag, Curtain Falls & San Victor Island for your 2-day itinerary.

Thanks much Maam Keza..have a nice day ahead😊

You do the same and stay safe. 🤘🏼

Is it safe for female solo traveler to follow your 3D2N for Cateel and Banganga? Thank you.

Absolutely. Davao Oriental is a safe place.

Hi Maam Keza, we are planning to visit those tourist spots may I know if kylangan po ba ng QR code or any requirements para mka visit sa jn sa baganga?

Hello Jan. For a more accurate response, please visit https://www.facebook.com/bagangatourism/

Hi. Accessible by van ba ang area ng curtain falls? Do we need to hike? If yes, how many minutes/hours? Safe ba ang parking area? Please advise. Thank you.

Hello. Accessible nman po by van. May konteng trek papunta sa Falls + tawid ilog pero less than 10 minutes lang.

I lived there.. Miss are there also!?

Hi, can you recommend an accommodation in Baganga?

I would suggest to find a beach resort to spend the night but if you are looking for a much accessible accommodation, Slapen Chillin is my reco.

Hi Keza, is it ok to travel riding a motorbike?

Hi Erik. Yes. Roads are very good in DavOr especially those going to their tourist spots.

The best time for visiting the area is in the morning when it is not hot and butterflies are the most active. It is the time when these beautiful insects dance, match, and date. In the heat of the day, many species take shelter under the leaves. It's a great chance to watch and photograph them.

13. Try Civet Coffee

Packs of world-famous civet coffee at Mt. Apo Cafe in Davao, Philippines

Photo from Mt. Apo Coffee

Civet Coffee is one of the most unique yet expensive coffee in the world, not only because of its taste but also the way it is prepared.

Civet Coffee is made with the help of a civet, a cat-like wild animal that is native to the country, particularly in Davao. It eats the sweet coffee cherries and then poops the beans.

This organic process gives the coffee beans a more profound and smoother flavor with no bitter taste, making it a favorite among coffee lovers. However, purchasing it in Europe or America can cost a fortune!

Getting it from the source is a less expensive option. Mt. Apo has a cafe where visitors can buy a cup and take home a bag of beans of this world-class coffee.

The strength of its dark chocolate-like scent is so natural that it tastes like roasted hazelnuts. It's a must-try drink during your stay in Davao.

Because many of the delicacies offered here are quite strange for foreigners, it’s great to visit this market with a local so you’d know what you’re eating. Everything is cheap (especially for Westerners) and it’s a great place to mingle with Davaoeños.

Davao is also the most populous city on the island of Mindanao where more than 1.7 million Filipinos live and thrive. Aside from the bustling economic activities, grand infrastructure projects, and thousands of thriving businesses in Davao, another special reason to love it more is the fact that it is one of the safest places to live in the country. Unfortunately, due to heartless hunting activities and habitat loss, the Philippine Eagle has become one of the most endangered species in the world. This is why the establishment of Davao City’s Philippine Eagle Center gives us high hopes of preserving the lives of these beautiful animals. The center is nestled within a rainforest covering a huge area of 8 hectares where the eagles can fly around safely.

Of course, the Philippine Eagle Center also gives tourists a chance to explore the beauty of not only our country’s avian wildlife but also other animals as well like monkeys, crocodiles, and many more!

7. Malagos Garden Resort and Chocolate Museum

Aside from the already spectacular attractions that Malagos Garden Resort offers, it also opened the first-ever chocolate museum in the country in 2017. The Malagos Chocolate Museum beautifully displays everything to know about Davao City’s thriving chocolate businesses. The museum is actually divided into four (4) phases namely: Museum Section, Interactive Zone, Chocolate Bar, and the Malagos Chocolate Laboratory where guests are given the chance to make their very-own chocolates! See? Such a fun-filled and educational experience indeed!

The “Tree to Bar” experience brought by the Malagos Chocolate Museum truly is an unforgettable adventure, especially for children! So be sure not to miss visiting the amazing Malagos Garden Resort and Chocolate Museum, okay?

VALENCIA, Negros Oriental (PIA) -- Tour guides in Valencia town had the chance to update their skills as the Department of Tourism (DOT) conducted a six-day back-to-back training on community tour guiding and Filipino Brand of Service Excellence (FBSE).

A total of 52 tour guides underwent walking tour coaching to improve their skills as the industry’s frontliners.

DOT, in partnership with the Valencia municipal government, has provided training for tourism workers on tourism reception, tour guiding techniques, and effective communication skills.

The town of Valencia is a first class municipality located in the highlands of Negros Oriental that offers various tourist spots such as Mt. Talinis, waterfalls, and museums, among others.

Part of the training is a mock tour of the geodiversity of Mt. Talinis, as hiking to the volcano is a popular adventure among visitors.

“It is our goal to capacitate our tourism industry workers for them to be able to provide quality service leading to customer satisfaction and increase competitiveness of our industry that will subsequently lead to increase in tourism arrivals and receipts,” said Cynthia Monzon of DOT-7.

DOT also introduced the FBSE program in training to sustain excellence in hospitality and enhance the quality of tourism services.

More confidence

Maurina Buladola, secretary of the Valencia Eco Guides Association (VEGA), said the training has made her more confident as a worker in the tourism industry.

“Daghan jud kaayo ang akong nakat-onan niining maong training. Akong na realize nga ang pagka tour guide mahimo pod diay nga profession. Mas confident na ko nga mo guide karon tungod sa bag-ong learnings na akong nakat-unan sama sa proper handling sa mga bisita. Among dakong pasalamat sa facilitators,” said Buladola.

(I have learned a lot in these training sessions. I realized that tour guiding can be a profession. I am now confident to guide because of my new learnings, like proper handling of visitors. We are grateful to all the facilitators.)

Valencia tourism officer Des Tilos, Jr., said the training is in response to the need to capacitate the tourism frontliners with the right skills and attitude to become “effective stewards of the town’s tourism industry.”

“The local government of Valencia shares the same vision with that of DOT to capacitate our tourism frontliners in order to level up the kind of service we extend to our visitors,” said Tilos.

The more satisfied the tourists are, the better it will be for the local economy as more tourists will be coming into the town, he said.

“This translates to a vibrant tourism industry that creates jobs for the locals,” added Tilos. (JCT/PIA7 Negros Oriental)
